Paid $15 cover pp, then another $5 for the second act. The acoustics were quite good - not too loud as to deafen, but enough to hear every note. McMurtry (folk singer) was really great - this was a performance by himself - he will appear in the main venue the following week with a band. I enjoyed his clear diction, and from there, appreciated the lyrics and the music itself. The lyrics mostly conveyed disaffection, cynicism, lost love or loneliness. It had an awesome vibe on Sunday 80’s night, it reminded me of a scene right out of the show “True Blood”. The dance floor was inviting and the music had us on our feet most of the night. My partner had pre-planned to take me here, from having past fun experiences. We watched a group of 5 people experience the same treatment from her when we were leaving and they were coming. They decided not to go because of her. Even today an after talking about our fun experience last night we mentioned if we hadn’t pre-planned to go she would have steered us away, that’s not good for business. Other than her attitude, we loved our time and plan to bring a friend who we know would love it! The original music videos playing behind the stage is amazing to watch when dancing. We saw people requesting songs with the dj writing them down and that was really cool! Check this place out it’s an experience and a step back into the 80’s!!

Elephant Room is a fantastic jazzy escape right on Congress Ave that is one of the greatest examples of Austin’s true love for music. The setting is very intimate with low lighting throughout and a lot of tables aligning the path down to the stage. We were able to snag a table pretty close up but we would recommend getting there early as the place was decently full for a Thursday night (also to beat their cover that begins at 8; cover amount depends on the day of week). The service is friendly and quick with ordering and getting drinks. Obviously with any jazz bar, the music is the main show and the band was great. They performed a few different styles of jazz and it all sounded fantastic with funny little skits in between their sets. It’s very easy to see why Elephant Room is a go to for many music lovers in the city. I will warn however that the drinks were not great. With a limited cocktail menu we went with familiar favorites of ours and none of us were very impressed with what we received. The Manhattan was very strong, even for a bourbon centric cocktail. The espresso martini was just alright but not as good as many other places. And lastly, the jazz juice just wasn’t as sweet and flavorful as other traditional rum punches. They do have a decent wine and beer selection so maybe stick to those. You can’t go wrong with great music and that’s exactly what Elephant Room provides. It's a total gem!! Very old school feel, lots of history to see in all of the photos. Definitely not a modern place if that's what youre looking for, but that's what gives it it's charm! Small dance floor so people are constantly running into people, but there's nowhere to grow, so it is what it is, and everyone does just fine. The floor is concrete which is good because it's all even and provides a good dancing surface. I don't feel that there's enough room on the dance floor for some of the people doing tricks and dips with a leg in the air, but that's just me. I was waiting for someone to get a boot to the face/head. One thing I disliked was the people standing around blocking the view if you were sitting at a table like we were. I was watching everyone dance and a group of people came and stood right in front of me. I would definitely come again though and look forward to doing so. I would go super early next time though because parking was very difficult due to being such a small land footprint. Hard because I know there isnt much anyone can do about it, so just go early and enjoy a taste of Texas!!! 😁

There is limited seating so if you need to sit, plan to arrive right when they open. The bar is enormous with lots of choices for alcohol but they add 20% to all tabs. On one hand, Antone's is a classic, an historic venue at the heart of Austin blues. It's an intimate venue to see some big names, with a decent size stage and good sound. Tickets are cheap and the staff is friendly. It SHOULD be highly rated. But it's also the only venue I've been to in this town in which the crowd continues to talk during performances. Not just in the bar area, but right up to the stage. Often loud enough that the band can hear them while they're playing. I've seen bands get their energy drained by it. Fans, and sadly, bands, have to ask people to be quiet during the show. Easily 80% of the shows I've seen at Antone's this happens. Even during the headliner people paid to see. I don't know why it happens here so often or why I've only seen it happen here. As a big fan of live music, it damn near ruins the experience. I've actually apologized on behalf of my city to traveling musicians I know after their shows. C'mon Austin, do better.

Since then they have pivoted to more of a bar scene, with an inside bar, needed that for the Texas heat, and night time with concerts and stages. I missed all the nice plants, paintings and coffee shop vibe back in the day. The place still serves good food, get the empanadas, very friendly staff and still good coffee.
