It was quiet, so we got a table without a reservation. The staff were very nice and took our order promptly. We both had the surf and turf which was great however what let it down is that my partners steak was overcooked to well done as opposed to medium rare which is what he ordered. They were happy to take it back and we were also given two complimentary shots. Unfortunately when the food came back we found that the lobster which was perfectly cooked came back rubbery from being re-heated. This was disappointing considering the surf and turf came to £85 each and they had also forgotten to season the fries the second time. Warmly greeted on arraival and shown to our table, which also seemed to show off the tardis like nature of the place, seemings bigger than the outside would suggest. A good range of ales as well as low to no options. The sunday menu is pretty much geared towards a traditional Sunday Lunch. Orders were taken and starters delivered within a reasonable time, the staff were attentive and the time between starters and mains pretty much bang on. The portions were generous, but not excessively so. I do have to mention the quality of the meat, excellently prepared and with a wonderful, thick, tasty gravy to pour over it and into the Yorkshire, top draw. The Old Thatch was busy, buzzing, but not to the point you would struggle with conversation. The question of do you want desert met with a smile. The location is beautiful, very cosy pub, dogs are welcome and we had a nice table in the corner for more comfort and peace. The food was really good, our friends were impressed about the burgers and the pies. Fish and chips was also fantastic. Prices as average pubs in the area. It was a great 'social' dish & was perfect with the chips! however, we did order extra, 'unlimited' was offered; but sadly they took ages to arrive (a fryer issue!?) and we ended up eating them after we finished the fish! The wine list was good, & without starters, a shared main & no desert, the bill came to just over £100, which wasn't bad for the size & quality of the Bass! Some of the other low reviews here point to many of the issues a chain restaurant suffers from - constantly changing serving staff and chefs. With all that said, the head server and Toni-Jay were amazing with us on our two visits. While I have seen some reviews point to the quality of food, as a seasoned reviewer I thought it was to a very good standard overall. The fish was daily and very fresh. The different starters, like the vegetable tempura, were done very well, with decent quality olives for example, and bread. The sides like beans and slaw with great, as well as rhe compound butters. I also thought their lager was tasty. The decor is very pleasing in here and the fake shipping forecast audible in the rest rooms was amusing. The owners of the chain have to get to grips with the food-speed issue and I was surprised to find it was a chain after our first visit. However, the wait for quality food was worth it overall. Many people will not come back locally if these issues persist on slow-speed of food, and on both occasions the wait for food was 40 minutes per course. Because there is a high-turnover of tourists in the summer, though, I suspect it will be able to manage this situation. This is a must-book place I would say if you are going to eat here in tourist season as it was very busy.

On entering it seems like just a normal local's pub, which it is in a way. But it is much more than that. For a start, it has the best selection of real ales and ciders I have ever seen. The location is ideal, just a short walk to the beach and the vibrant nightlife. On-site parking was a bonus, and the spa facilities were excellent. The hotel was perfect for what we needed, the superior double room was as shown in the pictures with plenty of space including for a travel cot provided free by the hotel. As if this was not enough the next morning Sunday during breakfast both coffee machines stopped working, there was again, the 1 active waiter, was not able to sort this , she was very apologetic, it didn't look like there was anyone in charge.We did tell them that we would not come back again, when we checked out. Honestly, I would not recommend, this place is tired, as stated before we have stayed at the otherwise the lodge which was great, but the hotel......needs a bit of work.
