The food is delicious, the staff are so friendly and the view is astonishing. We were fortunate enough to have a beach front view that felt like you were looking at a postcard! Our waitress Elizabeth was a breath of fresh air that added so much to our experience. We arrived without a booking, not realising the place is usually booked well in advance. The view alone is breathtaking, a perfect spring day in Queensland, right on the water. Even though they were full, the team kindly managed to arrange a small table for us. I started with a beautiful Japanese style lager which set the tone perfectly. Then came the crispy battered oyster with ginger caramel and lumaboshi jellyfish, absolutely phenomenal in texture and flavour, easily one of the best oyster experiences I have had. Lunch was the famous Moreton Bay Bug Roll with mayonnaise, sriracha, gem lettuce and a soft brioche bun. They call it a snack, but it is a moment. The balance of flavours is unreal, and now I understand why this dish has such a reputation. The atmosphere, the view, the food, everything was on another level. The service was exceptional. The wait staff were super friendly and even though it was clearly a busy day, they still took the time to chat briefly, explain the dishes and guide us through our choices with genuine passion. This is one of those rare times where five stars just does not feel like enough. If you are visiting the Gold Coast, or like me have lived here for years and somehow have not tried it yet, do yourself a favour. If you appreciate good food and memorable experiences, Rick Shores is an absolute must. Well done to the entire team. You truly have something special here.

I really enjoy the curry dishes as they are always super tasty, with an extra kick to the spicy dish karaage curry dish. I ordered the salmon toro bowl this time. We had a booking for 8 people to celebrate my son’s birthday. He was excited to go out with his friends and family for a special night. We called ahead to book the table, confirmed the timing, and even pre-ordered the kids’ meals and entrées over the phone to make things easier for the restaurant. Everything was planned for a smooth, enjoyable evening. The moment we arrived, things started going downhill. Two staff members were casually sitting outside, and it was clear from their expressions that they were not thrilled to see us. The welcome was cold, and we were made to feel like an inconvenience. As soon as we were handed the menu, within just 2 minutes, one staff member came out and pressed us to order quickly because "the chef wanted to leave." Before we could even process that, another staff member came out moments later and again insisted we order immediately, this time saying both the staff and the chef wanted to leave. I was able to smell Krish several stores down, completely dominating the Thai, Chinese & Mexican restaurants. I decided to check it out and confirm my suspicions, but I was dead wrong. We ordered Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala, Garlic Naan, White rice & Saffron rice. Atmosphere 3/5 Interestingly, I am quite happy with the venue. The chairs were ok, the tables were ok, there was no decoration or interesting lights. There was a really good fan, however. But, that’s all I want from a place like this. A hidden gem I can selfishly enjoy without the whole world knowing about. They do deserve a much better venue situated in a much busier environment. Service 3/5 As we were being seated, the front of house assistant talked minimally and quite softly. I felt intrusive in his own world. The waiter that served us for the rest of the night was speedy & punctual. He helped when needed to and no more. The lack of positive energy or happiness wasn’t the best but absolutely everything dissolved around me and stopped mattering the moment we started eating. Although we were the only ones there, our whole order took less than 15 minutes to arrive and it was all fresh. Accessibility 5/5 Super easy to find, located on the ground floor with wheelchair access. The whole process of entering & leaving was intuitive and simple. Enough seating to encourage larger groups. We were sat at our table at 4.35pm and given menus. We noticed in large letters on the back of the menu HAPPY HOUR 12PM-5PM. The waitress who was the Manager then agreed to give us the drinks at happy hour prices. To our surprise while on a visit to the toilet the 12pm-5pm daily Happy hour was advertised on the back of the toilet doors and home page of their website, same details as the Menus! On the lacklustre food, the Onyx Beef skewers were tough and chewy - seemed like sirloin and not marble beef and not worth $19 for two skewers. The Prawn & Scallop skewers, the prawns were frozen, tiny and the scallop was non-existent. The Asian greens had no taste, not even garlic so we drowned them in soy sauce. The food is expensive for what it is. To top it off there were cockroaches 🪳 crawling on the wall of our table and the back of our booth. The Manager agreed to discount the bill $19 for the black onyx skewers which was some consolation. We had visitors from Sydney and they were blown away by the quality and the prices. In the current market, small businesses are vying for customer loyalty to stay afloat. It seemed like the Manager didn’t really care if we were there or not which was disappointing. The most hilarious part of the night was as we were paying the bill we found a flyer on the table that said ‘Receive a free Butterscotch schnapps shot’ if you give us a 5 star review. ‼️😂

Well the first red flag was according to Kin’s Instagram and AI phone system, they open at 4:30pm. So we waited on the park bench outside until 4:30 to arrive at 4:35 to a closed door and waited outside, only to be completely ignored by staff until 4:50pm, when we were finally let in and told they actually don’t open until 5 and I questioned the phone system and Instagram and was told these must be have been updated. If the security cameras were check they would know this is accurate. We even heard the manager speak to the staff member about how they were supposed to open at 4:30. A little clarity—or even a simple acknowledgment—would’ve gone a long way. Once seated, the food was unfortunately no better. The miso soup was cold and mostly made up of tofu and seaweed, with barely any broth. The waitress also confirmed they had forgotten to turn the burner on to heat the soup and it was a mistake. She took these and returned them hot. The sashimi tasted fishy and didn’t seem fresh, yes we finished this as it’s not uncommon for fish to taste different and also for what we thought was a prime restaurant and only up to our second meal felt safe to continue eating and considering we would have to pay for it. The soy sauce bottles were empty. The bao buns arrived cold and stiff—definitely not the warm, fluffy texture you'd expect. Once again yes we ate these as they weren’t bad enough to presume we would get sick but just not fresh. Still hoping things might improve, we moved on to the beef robata skewers—only to find them raw, cold, and bloody in the middle. We were never asked for a preference of cooking but I still don’t believe if steak is cold in the middle this is how it was supposed to be served. At that point, we had to leave. I politely let the waitress know we wouldn’t be continuing with the remaining three dishes we had ordered. To her credit, she was lovely and completely understanding—honestly, the only redeeming part of our visit was her customer service. I am shocked this restaurant has presumed we wanted a free meal. We were visiting the area and often treat ourselves to $300+ dinners and have never received a “free” meal nor had the reason to complain. Japanese and Asian fusion is our absolute favourite and I take offence to there response presuming we are these type of people. Anyway that just shows the type of people they are for responding that way on a public review. We’ve paid similar (or even less) prices elsewhere for way better food. I can’t help but feel the five-star reviews might be swayed by the “free butterscotch schnapps for a 5-star review” sign on each table. As tempting as that might be for some, I’ll pass—and give my honest opinion instead. They must buy them or reviewers have pretty low standards. We went because the reviews seemed pretty good but the experience certainly wasn’t. We arrived at peak dinner time on a Saturday night and the place was three quarters empty. The staff were rude and miserable. We were treated like we were an inconvenience to their job. The restaurant is extremely outdated along with half the patrons who looked like they have been eating there since the furniture was new. A few box window air conditioners seem to struggle to make the place feel air conditioned at all. We had the buffet which seemed like an ok deal. The food was bland and tasteless, the kind of rubbish you would get in a food court in a shopping centre. You are given a plate and that plate is to be reused to go back to the buffet till you’re finished. I had 1 plate and that was enough for me, I was still hungry but the food was that bad. All of the group started with upset stomach as soon as we got home and it hasn’t stopped all night. Beware if your call for take away because your not getting fresh cooked food, your getting the stuff from the buffet as the staff were filling take away containers all night from buffet. The food was top rate, but the place is very small downstairs and tables small for the amount of food dishes and drinks we had coming so felt like we were playing tetris all night as dishes came out. Reading previous reviews there seems to be a few issues with Uber and customer service. We found this place originally through Uber eats and had no issues, however I now order directly through their website or via phone (as it’s cheaper and more money goes to these small businesses). I come here occasionally as I am conveniently down the road but I would travel past any Chinese place just to come here instead. My most recent time I came in 15min it’s to close time (9:30pm) and I was not expecting such a positive welcoming attitude. The food is not only high quality and delicious, they load those containers packed so generously. You get more than your money’s worth!
