However when we arrived we found the grass area by the house was filled with caravans as it seems travellers have been set up there for a while. We visited to see the Rebel Curators' GRIOT interventions in the Bristol People gallery, in between checking out of our hotel and catching the train home. The team member we spoke to at the reception desk was extremely helpful, answering our questions and advising on what else to see as well as recommending the café for our lunch. Bristol People is a well thought out gallery, combining traditional displays about local history with a newer display about Bristol's radical history, including the Bristol Bus Boycott and the Colston statue. The GRIOT interventions form part of the display about Bristol's part in the enslavement of African people and use graphics to point out content that is offensive and harmful for people of Black African and Caribbean heritage and to suggest different ways of presenting the story of the slave trade. It's a really powerful display and I hope it influences future redisplay of this part of the gallery, or becomes more than a time limited intervention. Tried some of the roast lamb with chorizo and again same for this plate, poor flavouring and lack of absolutely everything you want from a plate of food. And don’t get me started on Mac and cheese…. Was this frozen? Certainly don’t feel made fresh, cheese? No chance… flavour… no chance… this is actually worse mac and cheese I’ve ever tried. Can’t even bring myself to describe then poor levels of it… just avoid it. Overall the dishes were plated with style and certainly looked the part, but that’s as far as it goes when comes to it. Lack of seasoning throughout showed, chefs clearly not tasting their products and serving more style than substance here. Such a shame as this was a birthday visit and expected a lot more from such a beautiful restaurant. Best thing here were the olives and that says everything…. Overall I will score this visit 5/10 overall. Really need to up their game here or could be up against. Let’s hope there is change here sooner rather than later.
