Modern art museum
Mu.ZEE is a contemporary museum in Oostende, Belgium that showcases Belgian artwork from 1850 to the present. It houses a visual arts library and focuses on 19th- and 20th-century Belgian art, featuring works by renowned artists such as James Ensor, Leon Spilliaert, Constant Permeke, Luc Tuymans, Jan Fabre, Rene Magritte, Paul Delvaux, Karel Appel and Panamarenko.
A very calm and enjoyable experience that allows for a relaxed viewing of mostly Belgian modern and contemporary art, with a large collection of Léon Spilliaert and James Ensor works. It is a short walk - through the Leopoldpark - from the city’s center.
Nikos P — Google review
Lovely James Ensor collection. Also enjoyed the contemporary and modernism rooms. Tickets were 15€ which include an extensive audio guide
Wim V — Google review
Museum dedicated to Belgian art well worth the visit, definitely as a Belgian. There was a wonderful exhibition on Anna Boch while I was there. In a few months there will be a James Ensor exhibition I am sure will be a must-visit!
Charlotte — Google review
It's one of these museums where the previous exhibition has already finished, and you only see its catalogues in the museum shop, and the next exhibition is not there yet. I'm not sure I understood the logic of the permanent exhibition (spanning years from late 19th cent to mid-20th). A couple of paintings and applied art are quite good. The small exhibition on Raoul De Kayser is definitely worth a detour. A special thanks goes to the museum staff, who are extra nice and helpful.
Anastasia A — Google review
Very nice exhibition and nice story, yet the audio guide can’t be made more quiet, also the system with how you play the next thing is very weird and annoying
Alexander T — Google review
Good museum with some nice collections spread out over multiple spatious levels. Well organized and easy to reach. Fully equipped as you can expect from a museum this size (lockers, audio guides, reservation system etc). and with a bistro and shop. Extra points for the very helpfull staff!
Joris V — Google review
This building used to be the shop and headquarters of a cooperative organisation of Ostend. It now houses a museum for contemporary art and a collection of modernistic paintings. Very spacious building is an excellent alternative when weather suggest indoor activities. Audioguides available also for kids.
Bart E — Google review
Actually small museum despite its building size. A bit pricey for a what you get: small hall with local sea paintings and several experimental art works. If you have a lazy walking on Oostende promenade and soul ask for art and has extra 12 euros per person — take a shot. Otherwise pass free.

Mercator is a restored former training ship that was first launched in 1932 and now serves as a floating maritime museum. The three-masted sailing ship has a rich history, having been designed by polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache and serving various roles such as a sail training vessel, scientific expedition vessel, international ambassador for Belgium, and even briefly as HMS Mercator in the British Royal Navy during WWII.
Lovely experience, convenient visit and very many details to study. Plenty of explanations provided and there are several interactive screens which render the museum interesting for visitors of all ages. More areas than we had expected can be visited and see up close. We really enjoyed our visit. Note should be taken that tickets can only be paid for by card. No cash payments are accepted at the ticket office.

Delightful experience, informative and lively exhibition. The adventures of cadets are brought personally close to the visitor.
Áron P — Google review
You can walk inside the ship 💙the route is really well made. It’s easy to imagine life at sea and feel the real spirit of old voyages.⚓️
Liliia P — Google review
Great experience and a lovely ship. Really enjoyed the walk through the ship and the very well written guide.
Daniel T — Google review
Very educational. You can visualise the life of the crew on board the ship. (For cadets and officers) The tour explained the history of the ship and its last mission as well. It takes about 45 minutes to get around with reading all the info as well.

Very nice Museum!!
Bartlomiej K — Google review
Reasonable place, interesting for history buffs. for a short stay. Pass the entire ship between floors. and see the places where they slept and ate. and all the accessories they used. The ship's travel history. Entrance costs €7 per person. Worth going in only if there is nothing else to do. Not too interesting.
G — Google review
A lovely floating museum that you can visit quickly when in Oostende. I actually expected more but it seems even a huge ship could be small at a certain point. You can get inside the ship and learn about life on board. There are different cabins like the pharmacy, doctor, kitchen? Operation room... etc. I loved walking around but would have appreciated it of they could do an English translation or English guide somehow. I wanted to read what was being said there but eventually couldn't. The officer in charge of the tours is really nice and sweet. He offered to take some pictures of me since I visited alone and then was happy to recommend some other restaurants to have a nice meal later on.

Fort Napoleon is a restored 19th-century fortress located in the dunes east of the harbor. Built in 1811 as a defense against a potential seaborne attack, it served various military purposes throughout history. Today, visitors can enjoy audio tours and dine at the chic bistro/restaurant with a sun terrace on-site. The fort is part of an area that also includes art museums, galleries, and remnants of German dune defense institutions from World Wars I and II.
Excellent sight with many interactive activities for visitors of all ages, with many historic and interesting details provided over the audio guide. The terrace atop the building was also a nice stop, with a nice selection of beverages and warm colourful blankets available for capricious weather moments. The route planned for the visit also allows young ones to put their energy to good use (tunnels, stairs, wood obstacles etc.) if they choose to do so.
Lia R — Google review
I visited the restaurant but not the museum. The food was great with the price we paid. Nice vibes and friendly staffs.
Joy B — Google review
Over rated and overpriced. 11€ a ticket was an absolute rip off. Most of the area is a child’s education centre, we also couldn’t visit the top as there was a corporate event on. This place definitely feels like a tourist trap that is milking whatever is left.
Luke — Google review
Don’t eat in restaurant!! Snail in salad not the escargot kind but, the bad hygiene kind. For your health en safety don’t eat…. Also sour cheese croquettes, staff doesn’t care about problems they just say sorry and tell you they can’t do anything about it. Also the museum seems like a rip off. Just avoid at al cost!!!
Lukas L — Google review
Excellent exhibition venue, with bar and terrace.
Chris W — Google review
Former fort built under Napoleon now hosting a museum and a restaurant. A fort full of history to visit with an audio guide (available at least in Dutch, French and English)... But not much concrete to see, lots of white walls. A little disappointing for the price of entry... 9€ per adult. The acoustics can be disturbing if there are a lot of people, I imagine. The rooftop is worth seeing.
Chloé T — Google review
I enjoy visiting this military museum and waking around with friends. Educational entertainment for children inside and outside, bar for parents, easy access with public transport.
Albina P — Google review
Nice place to visit if you have never visited a fort before. Good audio tour - local language is a nice touch for Dutch speaking people. Also an option to have a drink in the local bar.

The Royal Galleries of Ostend, also known as Koninklijke Gaanderijen, are a stunning neoclassical arcade situated along the seafront promenade of Ostend. This architectural marvel was constructed between 1902 and 1906 and spans approximately 381 meters with a colonnade featuring 343 paired Tuscan columns.
Every one is so laid back and helpful and nothing is to much trouble for them. Plus it is a beautiful city

It needs some repair/ cleaning, too bad for such a cool piece in an otherwise mostly tasteless city (architecture wise it feels at least, from an outsider perspective)

The Ensor Museum is the former home of the renowned Belgian painter and printmaker, James Ensor. Located in Ostend, this museum offers a glimpse into the life of the artist with period artifacts and exhibits showcasing his work. Ensor's art mainly focused on religious subjects, and visitors can explore haunting dolls and grim paintings within his house.
The house is filled with reproductions of Ensor’s work that evoke in some rooms the artists everyday life. Many pictures, installations and music serve to recreate the atmosphere of Ensor’s time. A small exhibition space showcases some of his original works. You have to book a time slot to enter the house or receive a booking at the entrance.
Nikos P — Google review
The house tour was very well organized. I wouldn't say the same for the "museum" part: no one explained which route to take and that we had limited time to see the exhibition (as the museum closes at 6pm) this ruined the overall experience in my opinion. Majinbu really likes Ensor though, so I hope changes will be made for the better.
Majinbu S — Google review
It was such nice museum experience. As a foreigner, I didn’t know anything about James Ensor when I visited here, but audios were quite helpful. Ensor’s work was a bit unsettling and eerie to me, especially when I see the ground floor full of taxidermy, real skulls. Overall we enjoyed our visit 😍
Vasila T — Google review
I love how closely this museum and the house is connected to both the history of Oostende as the international art scene in the 1920’s. James Ensor is still a big name in the art world today, something we should be very proud of as Belgians. The museum is beautiful and it’s great they were able to maintain the Ensor house as well as they did.
Charlotte — Google review
I enjoyed my visit to this museum very much. The staff were very polite and professional and explained everything I need to know before I start the tour. There is an English audio guide for free included in your ticket as they are considerate that not everyone speaks same language. There are 3 floors but when I visited, they were renovating the 3rd one and we only visited the 1st and 2nd floor and I felt like I have missed something. Keep you ticket as you can claim a discount for the art meusum until end of yhe summer. Would love to come back for a visit tomorrow to bring friends to this place.
Amal T — Google review
This is a wonderful interactive expo of Ensor's life in Oostende, a peak to his house, family and work. The audio guide is included in the price and it's very informative. Even though this is not a real museum with original paintings of Ensor, it's very much worth a visit!
Riikka — Google review
Ensor - a highly creative man with a social mission. This museum provides a good insight into his personal living. Recommended!

Located in Ostende, Belgium, Leopoldpark is a charming and serene park that is a popular attraction for tourists. Neat and tidy park. Nice to visit when in the area. On the little island you will often find a small exhibition. Check the city calendar as they sometimes do concerts there as well. All in all very pleasant to walk through and not too busy. Area is clean as well.

Duarte M — Google review
We always look for large parks, and this one is for us pretty small. Even though its nice to be below some trees and on the grass and away from the highly poppulated shopping disteict and beach.
Sayantan D — Google review
Lovely little park. Unfortunately works were being done on the bridges so couldn't use. The restaurant there is lovely with great service.

Nice parc to walk around and enjoy the weather. A few romantic spot with bridges, a kiosk, statues. Benches all around. Nicely equipped, sports spots, places for kids, and apparently a mini golf. Main entrance with a floral clock. Well maintained. Close to the beach and to the Indigo Zeeparking. Lack of bins maybe.

Beautiful public park in Ostend. It extends on an open large area with a beautiful lake and panoramic views in each part. Green over the year.
Nagham R — Google review
The Eggevoorde Estate had dominated the Maelbeek valley in Brussels since the Middle Ages, but portions had been sold off in the following centuries. In 1851, a portion was sold off in exchange for shares in the Zoological and Horticultural Society, and the area became what is today Leopold Park. The park was intended to be a home for scientific and leisure activities. Horticultural gardens and a zoo were created along with a community hall, a reading room, and a café-restaurant. However, the zoo was poorly managed and the management company went bankrupt in 1876. The horticultural gardens on the other hand were quite successfully managed by Jean Jules Linden, and they became a commercial and scientific success story until 1898, when they were sold. The City of Brussels bought the old zoological gardens and converted them into a public recreational park containing a variety of diversions, including the current Museum of Natural Sciences. The 1927 Solvay Conference in Brussels was the fifth world physics conference. In 1884, Ernest Solvay and Paul Héger, professors at the Université Libre de Bruxelles began a project to create an expanded university campus in the park. Several of the university's new institutes were created in the park, and stand to this day, including the original site of the Solvay Institute of Sociology, as well as its sister institution, the Solvay Institute of Physiology, which was completed in 1894. It was in that building that the famous Fifth Solvay Conference on Physics and on Chemistry took place in October 1927. During the following years, a campus for the Solvay School of Commerce was established but construction of additional buildings was soon curtailed for fear of encroachment on the park and its fragile wildlife. In 1930, the Lycée Émile Jacqmain secondary school moved into the former Institute of Physiology. These buildings have remained to this day but only one still belongs to Solvay (and houses the Solvay Conference).

Maria Hendrikapark, also known as t Bosje, is a 45-hectare public park in Oostende, Belgium. It features two playgrounds, ponds, and trails for visitors to enjoy. The park was created between 1888 and 1892 at the request of King Leopold II. It offers a serene environment with man-made lakes and wooded areas connected by foot and cycle paths.
A perfect park. for walks for recreation picnic. Although in winter there is not much beyond that, but still a recommended place. In the summer the place is active and bustling and there are more attractions. There are many paths to walk and the park area is very large.

A very nice park with little lakes and playgrounds. Most of the ways are sealed so you can even go there after rain but you should avoid the unsealed ones then. They're muddy and slippery. There are a lot of benches to sit on and enjoy the views. The park also has some sculptures but not with english inscriptions. Unfortunately there are no toilets nearby.

Relaxing, well-kept park for strolling and featuring a playgarden, boats and mini-golf. This park is about 45 hectares (111 acres) and is situated only about 2 to 3 kilometers outside the city center. There is free car parking but in peak season it can be full. Especially in spring and summertime this park attracts a lot of visitors without feeling like a distraction to the quiet green atmosphere. Besides strolling you can have a drink and a meal at "Koninginnehof" which is the main catering hub. Next to "Koninginnehof", you'll find a play garden for kids, you can rent a boat or play mini-golf. If you're looking for more peace and quiet, visit the mirror lake or choose one of the many walking paths around the different man-made lakes. The name derives from the wife of King Leopold II: Maria.

The Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, located in Ostend, is a magnificent Gothic-style church with twin spires and intricate stained-glass windows. Despite being consecrated in 1908, the church gives off an ancient vibe with its neo-Gothic interior. It replaced the original Church of St Peter after it was destroyed by fire in 1896.
This church is magnificent and I’ve been fortunate enough to catch the organ recitals when I was visiting, added to the grandeur of the cathedral. The multiple stained glass windows that cast colored light through out are impressive.

Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskerk is one of the most striking and admired monuments in Ostend. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Rotary Club Oostende Ter Streep, he commissioned a bronze model of the church. The project was called "Voelkerk" because it gives the visually impaired the opportunity to create an image of a neo-Gothic church. The model was placed on a pedestal in front of the church. On the front is a Braille inscription with a description of the church and a poem by the Ostendian poet Astrid Dewancker. The project was realized in cooperation with the city of Ostend and thanks to the contribution of many generous sponsors. It has become an astonishing exhibit, extraordinary craftsmanship and an absolute attraction for the "Oostende Cultural City of Flanders 2010". Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskerk (Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul), the main church of Ostend, Belgium, is a Roman Catholic Neo-Gothic church. It is built on the ashes of a previous church that occupied the site. King Leopold II enthusiastically supported a plan to build a new and more magnificent church. Construction started in 1899 and was completed and consecrated by Bishop Waffelaert on August 31, 1908. Its stained glass windows were destroyed during the two Warld Wars and were replaced by windows by Michiel Martens. The church is 70 meters long and 30 meters wide. Its spires are 72 meters high.
LUKAS W — Google review
A very pretty neogothic church, which looks so quaint and lightweight. Inspired by the Cologne cathedral and neogothic Votivkirche in Vienna, this one definitely has some character of its own. The lovely stained glass windows (modern, by a local Michel Martens) add so much color and brightness.

We enjoyed a show of The Analogues, performing The Beatles' White Album. Being seated near the stage and close to the performers gave an extra vibe to experience. Comfortable seating and temperature. I recommend this venue.
Bart T — Google review
Splendid example of '50s architecture and a lovely venue. The main hall is great and there is a massive bar area behind it. So why not 5 stars. You need to leave your coat (in mid-winter anyway) and there is a huge queue at the end. You pay to leave your coat. We left 2, or were given 3 when we asked for them back. I hope someone got their coat back.... Small thing, but a surprise to me. The seat numbers are in pairs. One side of the hall is all odd numbers and the other side is all even. I visited last week,March 6th. The spectacle was amazing!!! Can't take pictures or videos. There is no own parking, so you have to walk 15 minutes to the place. The only inconvenience is that is too far, almost 3 hours by car one way. Should be somewhere in the middle of the country.

Jumpsquare Oostende (formerly known as Hangtime) is a vibrant indoor trampoline park spanning 1,000 square meters. It features an array of attractions including trampolines, a ball bath, and an engaging play area for young children. The facility also houses a delightful coffee bar. Additionally, visitors can enjoy various extras such as basketball hoops, dodgeball trampolines, and foam pits.
It was a really fun day in Jumpsquare. They offer several activities like basketball, airbags where you can jump from a tower or my favourite computer games with a big variety of play modes which is really entertaining. The trampolines actual looked new and the music was great. As an adult it’s still fun to go on a not so busy day and sport. Afterwards you can also enjoy some food and drink at the restaurant.

My kids absolutely loved the park! There’s plenty of space for everyone, and the equipment is in perfect condition. I also really enjoyed relaxing on their beautiful terrace. The highlight: the outstanding customer service – super attentive, caring, and genuinely friendly to all visitors. 100% recommended!

This is one of the best indoor parks we’ve visited! My kids and I had such a great time. The entire place is very clean and well-maintained, and the activities are perfect for children of all ages. It’s also excellent value for money—you really get a lot for the price. Highly recommend

After we had a lot of fun here last year and were very satisfied, we can no longer recommend Jumpsquare after the change of operator (previously Hangtime). We were wondering why it was so empty in the hall. Parents now have to pay the full entrance fee even if they just want to watch the children. The staff were visibly embarrassed to have to send us out of the hall, even though I was only standing in the locker area (entrance area). In addition, the music is too loud, the rubbish bin's are full to the brim and the toilets are dirty (at 12 noon). 1 star for the friendliness of the staff, but that's no reason for us to come back. Meanwhile a sad place.

I would highly recommend this place! First of all it offers a great opportunity for the kids to get rid of some energy, and it‘s also a place where parents can sit and enjoy food and a large variety of alcoholfree beverages and beers at reasonable prices. But the thing that really warmed my heart today ist the lovely team. Thank you very much for your extraordinary kindness

We visited jump oostende today with a family of 4 (including 2 young children). Everyone had a great time and the young man working there helped us with everything we needed(as we were foreign and it was our first visit to the park). Really good experience, would recommend
Maggi — Google review
Even for those who do not go for the trampolines, the place is worth visiting for the cafeteria. There’s a huge free playground where you can keep your kids busy (it’s mostly a family place) and have drinks in their nice saloon. They also have a very big beautiful terrace. Prices are average and the Ginger Lemonade is delicious.

I told them I'd follow the route via the chatbot, but they told me that wasn't possible. The chatbot didn't tell us the streets, but the route on the chatbot was the same as the route on the map. We followed the walk with the map on the chatbot, but with old graffiti, and certainly not the 2021 graffiti. The information we got from the chatbot didn't match the artwork we saw on the walls. It was a real shame that we walked all afternoon in the rain only to finally see old artwork. Really, it was poorly organized again. Mommy's Bastards is a trendy restaurant and bar offering a diverse selection of wines with unique names like 'Hipster', 'Mustache', and 'Daddy's favorite wine' from Spain, Italy, and the United States. They also feature popular beers such as Kerel beer alongside regional brews. The menu boasts an extensive range of options including shareable snacks and top-notch burgers. Visitors praise the atmospheric setting, excellent service, and local beer and cocktail choices.
We had had a drink outside this bar / restaurant earlier in the day and enjoyed the atmosphere so decided to try a bite to eat in the evening. What a treat, the menu was very varied and I was worried that with such a range of choices, the quality might not be there. We ordered nachos, wedges, burger and chicken tikka masala, like I said the menu was huge and varied. All the food was superb, full of flavour and large portions, in fact the nachos were by far the best we have ever had out. Curry was full of flavour and the "small plate' came with naan bread rather than rice which prefer. Again the 'NewYork' burger was great with a really peppery sauce, all excellent for the money! The restaurant is far bigger inside than you might expect and felt clean and spacious, even though it was mostly full. It's in a side street between the harbour and the main town, we'll worth a visit.

This is not your fast food quality hamburger but a luxuriously, savoury and delicious burger as mommy used to make them! Starting with an excellent cocktail from the extensive menu, with a good glass of wine and ending with a good coffee. What else? Add a friendly service in an original decor and relaxed ambiance. That will do nicely indeed.

Great food, nice restaurant, friendly staff. Overall we really enjoyed our stay. Our table on the 2nd floor was very nice and especially the outside seating area looked very nice. Many different options on the menu and the combination of shared dishes and mains is fantastic and makes ordering fun. We really enjoyed our shared dishes and the burger was also delicious. The shared dishes are a little overpriced tho for the amount of food you get. A small portion of Nachos with Guacamole for 7 euros (i think) is not really justified. However, the general experience was nice and the food very enjoyable. Would recommend if in Oostende

(Translated by Google) We are absolutely thrilled. We came from Germany to go on holiday to the beach but sometimes we need a change. Our children didn't want to leave because they had so much fun. Even though a different language was spoken there, our son was able to quickly make friends with other children. Value for money is incredible. We need something like this in Germany too, where parents can come in for free. We can recommend this indoor playground to everyone and will definitely come back while we are still there. Unfortunately, there are two points of criticism that we noticed on our second visit. Firstly, the same amount of dirt was there the next day as the day before. A round with the vacuum cleaner would have been urgently needed and secondly, the door to the toilet is permanently open. A bit impractical for very small children because they can go in at any time.

[october 2023] I offer you 5 stars because my first time in this bar was magical, a timeless and intercontinental meeting place, even unique in its genre, a place where DJs mix on vinyl and where people like to dance like I do. have rarely seen in Europe! Quality beers, even rare, can be found in local bars (my favorite Saint Bernardus apt 12 of course, but in moderation). A big thank you to the big boss for his hospitality and his good manners and good humor. Ps :When the bosses are not there, the little ones gain power! or it was a most distressing extra. Atlantikwall Raversyde is an open-air museum located on the protected Provincial Domain of Raversijde, featuring a coastal complex of German WWI & WWII bunkers, tunnels, and observation posts. The site offers an atmospheric walk through trenches and tunnels, exploring the impact of the two world wars on the area. With sixty well-preserved structures connected by open and underground passages, it stands as one of Europe's best-preserved remnants of the Atlantic Wall.
Must visit with children who are interested in learning history. We were hoping to finish visiting this place in couple of hours. But once we were there realised how much there is to see and learn. Beautifully managed historical place. As we started our tour the person who gave us our map was fantastic at explaining how to go about the place. We ended up spending a whole day at this site.

An incredible, well-preserved piece of history and a truly memorable experience. The tour lasts over three hours, walking through bunkers, tunnels, and open-air remains while learning about World War history. It’s fascinating to stand inside structures built so many decades ago — even before our great-great-great-grandparents were born! At the start, they give you an audio guide device that vibrates and pops up information whenever you reach a landmark;I loved that feature. The site is very well-organized, and everything is clearly explained. It’s also amazing to stand by the sea during the tour and imagine what it must have been like back then. I definitely recommend packing some snacks and lots of water or drinks, because it’s a long walk and you’ll be tired by the end. Wear comfortable shoes (open or closed), as there’s quite a bit of walking involved. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the Belgian coast and interested in history.

All we knew about WW1 and WW2 was from history books and some movies. Being here , we understood more about them. We spent about 3 hours inside, and afterwards we took a walk on the beach. Very cheap entry tickets and a lot to see.

staff was very friendly and welcoming. It took us 3+ hours to finish the tour so make sure to come early! A multimedia guide is incl. in the ticket price and at important stops are more information available for you to read.

Came here in Oostende for holidays, and I was met with this amazing WW1/WW2 Museum. I decided to visit it with my friends and family since I love to learn everything related to WW1 and WW2, and I was not disappointed. The entry is relatively cheap for so much you can explore. We got told that a visit would take 2 hours, but we ended up exploring it for about 3 hours! You’re given a map with a route that follows a certain route. It leads you to explore the WW1 route first and then the WW2 route. You’re also given a device (a sort of phone) which is probably the most useful thing i’ve seen in a museum so far. It offers various things: - Audios: In the WW2 route, there are numbers marked on some doors where you can listen to information about that certain part -Location based information: It has some sort of tracker where, when you pass a certain area, it pops up images, maps, small videos and more information about that certain area. Furthermore, the organisation, preservation and info boards are very good. It makes reading, as well as learning, much more enjoyable. There are some areas in bunkers/underground routes, where you’re met with realistic war sounds, such as airplanes flying, bombs exploding and gunshots that give you that eerie experience of what soldiers had to endure day by day. Finally, there are some TVs with small videos that explain certain events (How people survived during bombings, how the germans used their fortifications to defend the coast, how they used math to calculate the distance of the enemy’s ship, etc..) Overall, it was a pleasant experience. As someone who loves everything about WW1/WW2, this museum is absolutely amazing and well explained. Totally recommend to take a moment to visit it and learn what the Belgian coast had to endure, as well as what happened in WW1/WW2 in general. Fantastic, will come here one day with more friends and family again!

Fantastic open air museum about the German fortifications along the Atlantic coast in Word Wars I and II. The exihibition is extremely well done, with replicas and original pieces that not only show the military aspects of the fortifications but also the everyday life of both soldiers and local citizens. We went with two kids (7 and 10) and despite the gloomy topics, the exhibition is also suited for kids, with a map and a quiz for kids to explore the area. Highly recommended!

Catastrophe!!! Trams are overcrowded and the frequency is too low. Very often you can't get on the tram at all!!! The vehicles themselves are uncomfortable and there is little space in them. I don't understand why, when replacing the tram fleet, it was not decided to use longer vehicles, since the tram stops can handle trams that are several meters longer. This is an unacceptable situation for me.

Seafood restaurant
La Moulinière Oostende is a seafood restaurant in Ostend with a wide selection of mussels. The food is good and the service is friendly. The place can be quite busy during peak season, so reservations are advisable.
Lovely kaas croquettes as a starter. Great taste. Good cheese. Very crispy. The restaurant offers 40 different Kind of mussels. We have had mushroom, cream with garlic and one with roquefort. Both have been sooooo good. OMG. Great taste. Very fresh and a very big portion. If you Love mussels, it's a must do in Oostende. The restaurant itself is plain, clean but with nice artworks at the walls which fits to the sea and area. The service was okay but not very friendly. We have had the feeling that they do not love their jobs so much. This is a minus point.
Emely E — Google review
The mussels were fresh and delicious, but unfortunately no bread was served alongside. The portion of fries was also quite small for four adults, and we left still feeling hungry. Overall, it was good, but it definitely could have been better.
A S — Google review
Unbelievably disappointing experience There were three of us having lunch here, and from the start, it was frustrating. We were pressured to order three main dishes because, for some reason, they don’t allow ordering just a starter—even if you’re not hungry enough for a full meal. After a few minutes of discussion, they reluctantly accepted our order, but by then we were already considering leaving. The food itself was overpriced and came in very small portions. I honestly don’t understand where the positive reviews are coming from. The mussels were nothing special at all. To add to the disappointment, when it was time to pay, they only accepted cash or payment via a special app that you can’t download unless you have a Belgian bank account. It felt like stepping back into the 20th century. On top of that, the staff were unfriendly. Overall, I would avoid this place.
Alexander D — Google review
The mussels were fresh and delicious, but the waiter’s attitude was very unpleasant. We were a group of six adults and six children and ordered eight pots of mussels. However, perhaps due to a language misunderstanding, we were served two extra pots. When we explained that we hadn’t ordered that many, the waiter ignored us, insisted that they had checked, and forced us to take the extra dishes. In the end, we had no choice but to accept them, as the waiter just dropped them off and walked away. It made us feel cheated, and although the food was tasty, the experience was far from enjoyable.
Kenny K — Google review
I would give a 4,3 The plates were abolutely delicious. There were a few issues with the mossels (some dirt) and the waiters were sometimes very close to being disrespectful. The main waitress was amazing, the taste was amazing and I recommend the mossels !
Laura D — Google review
Loved the food and the service was spectacular. They also have a toy corner to keep kids entertained. We never enjoyed a meal so much because kids were happy and we could eat in peace haha Mussels were great and the paired wine, stunning!
Chiara C — Google review
This is a place which I definitely DO NOT recommend. Firstly the waiter tried to forced us to order main dish for each person, as two starters, one main and drinks are not enough for this place. This “requirement” is even written in the menu, which is totally strange. Then we managed to agree with her that we can stick to our initial order, and we got the food, which is quite average, and the portions of starters are small for the prices they have.and finally when it came to a point to pay the bill, we discovered to you can only pay cash!! or with some local Belgian app. And all of those happened with a waiter being obviously not happy to have us there (no sorry or whatsoever). So it isn’t worth visiting at all.

Ice cream shop
Gelato Maxzim is a popular spot in Oostende known for serving delicious Italian-style ice cream. The traditional gelato, perfected by Maxzim who learned from Sicilian Roberto Jacobi, attracts long lines on warm days. Visitors praise the wide variety of flavors and friendly staff. Some recommend trying the stratticella and coffee while others suggest indulging in the lovely and smooth ice cream with waffle cones.
Tremendous ice cream. I don't usually give 5* We tried passionfruit, mango, raspberry, hazelnut and pistachio, all top notch.
Peter S — Google review
"I'll start with the most important part: the ice cream here is amazing. Seriously, I've had about ten different flavors and they've all been a hit. The quality and taste are truly top-notch, and that's what makes this a difficult review to write. The reason for the low rating is the poor customer service. On my most recent visit, I made a simple request for a mix of two flavors. The person serving me, though very polite, immediately dismissed the idea as 'impossible.' This lack of a 'can-do' attitude was disappointing. It's a shame to see such a great product held back by an unaccommodating approach. If they can work on their customer service, this place would easily be a five-star shop."
Mohamed S — Google review

This intimate wine-bistro is designed to reflect the owner's passion for food and wine. The menu options are simple (fish or meat), seasonal, well priced, and expertly executed - making it perfect for an intimate evening out. The atmosphere is cozy, romantic, and perfect for a special occasion. Finally, the desserts were delicious but we were only able to enjoy them for a brief period due to our schedule constraints.

Great brasserie inside the old postal building, very nice setting. Reservations are recommended as it can get crowded. The menu is varied and service is good. A great stop when visiting Oostende as it is near the busiest areas.
Joris V — Google review
Retro post-office of the 50s revamped into a Culture Center. Dating from the '50s, architecture by Gaston Eysselinck and designed to be used as a post office until 1999. In 2001 the city of Ostend acquired the building and from 2012 it serves as a Cultural Center. The building offers several performance spaces used for the performing arts, literature and expositions. The main event is the annual 'Theater aan Zee' (Theater at Sea festival) in July, in which this building becomes the main hub for several performances from noon till late in the evening. 'Theater at Sea' involves many locations, not only restricted to this building. The Cultural Center is quite impressive and especially the panorama bar on top offers a grand view of the city. The only caveat is: the menu of the Cultural Café is totally overpriced, so avoid. At the time I visited they charged 19,20 EUR for fish sticks with mashed potatoes (see my photo of the menu) which is ridiculous. Although the philosophy may be culture should be accessible to everybody, this ain't the case if you want to have a bite at the Cultural Café. If you have two kids who simply want to eat fish sticks with mashed potatoes it will cost you nearly 40 EUR (see photo of menu prices).

First of all, no wifi, if they had i would post that review when i was there, and moreover mobile data doesn’t work inside too. We ordered only nachos and one small pizza. Nachos, with “guacamole” and “sour cream” probably was below supermarket nachos. Guacamole didn’t even taste like one and sour cream was just philadelhia cheese. My fiance ate it, but i didn’t like it. Small pizza brought my memories about school canteen, where they had these pizzas. Very meh. Oostends Historisch Museum De Plate, also known as the City Museum Ostend, is a local history museum situated in a late 18th century royal residence that once served as the summer home of King Leopold and Queen Louise-Marie. The museum offers an insightful overview of Ostend's traditions, history, and economic development. Visitors can explore the death room of Queen Louise-Marie and view exhibits on ferry ships and items from the hotelier school.
It's not a "grand museum" but a sacred place devoted to local history. To some it won't be interesting in this way, but I found the Oostende Compagnie history fascinating. Cash only, but it's just 5eur for adults.

Nice little museum on Oostendes history and the first queen of Belgium who died in this building. 3-5 euro entrance - depending on age. Don’t miss to take the stairs up on the very top level to where they carried the sick queen so she could breath ocean air. Now you only see construction sites

Cosy museum that can use an upgrade. Housed in one of former queen Louise-Marie of Belgium which lived here until her death. Part of the museum is dedicated to the life of the royal family and you can go upstairs to the belvedere where the queen reposed with the view over the sea (now blocked with other buildings.) The other part of the museum tells the hard life of the fishermen. Entry is low (only 4€) and is justified if you want to take shelter for an hour or so from the rain.

The Kroegske ('t) Scheer is a small, colourful café in Ostend with great drink prices and an amazing atmosphere. The staff are very friendly, and the surroundings are interesting and fun.
Very nice place that is worth a visit in Oostende! It's a cafe, it really a place to eat. I'm not sure you can even get food here? There's lots of details in the house and decoration! Service is also very friendly, and prices for the beers are very decent. I appreciate such places a lot. Definitely will come back.

A gem of a place. When we were there the place was closed we sat down in the court yard, one of the guys said you should try -the owner was there and said no problem served us a beer I didn’t know that was delicious. We had a great time the ambience was lovely warm and welcoming

This is a bar. A very small and quircky bar. With an atmosphere/ history you can taste. A few locals who think they own the place notwithstanding a great place to have a drink . And oh yeah, the bar is runned by Gandalf's slightly but not by much younger nephew.. so speak up when ordering.

This place is the place to be if you're an artist or when you love art. Iwein and Renée started this place 50 years ago. Without 't Kroegske, there wouldn' t be a tree at the center of the Paulusplein and the Paulusfeesten would never have existed. Needless to say that this place is part of Ostend's rich history.

The Strand Ostende in the city is a popular beach with shops, cafes, and restaurants. The beach has sand sculptures during the summer.

The beach offers a charming atmosphere. Water is very clean. It was not crowded in the morning whereas crowd became to gather in the noon.
Shubham M — Google review
Beautiful, clean, long beach. The problem is with wind(40-50 kmph speed at the time when we visited). It is so heavy that the sand flies and hits us hard. We cant even open our eyes. Luckily following a rain we were able to go to the beach and play in the water. The location is perfect for old people as well as kids. The place is designed in such a way that we don't need to go to sand to enjoy the beach. There are many seats and photo points. Less crowded. Lots of Hotels nearby. Must visit.
Renjith M — Google review
A beautiful and huge beach. There are lita of restaurant on the side of it. White sand and amazing sunset view. You can walk along the beach and if lucky there is a place at the end of the beach where seals come and sit to relax during a sunny day.
Navneet J — Google review
Great beach, professional life guards who take the job seriously. Not a lot of trash fortunately. The playground (pirate boat) more south is also a lot of fun, recommended to visit with younger kids.
Marcel P — Google review
The beach itself is beautiful, long and broad and Sandy. But there are very few facilities, e.g. 1 shower in 100 meters, same with bathrooms. Also only a few bars directly at the beach. What is however even worse, is the wind. The beach is very windy and there is no place to hide. Some sunbeds with some fabric to protect from the wind are offered, but they are very far from the sea... Similarly Also some small "houses" are offered to lease, but Also far from the sea. And a warning to those who have never Been - Ostende is not a picturesque town - it was destroyed in WW II and rebuild in a very poor taste - the new buildings facing the sea are mostly Concrete and simply ugly. If you want a nice scenery on your beach, find some place else.
Tereza “ — Google review
Beautiful view specially in the evening when it’s not crowded, many restaurants and shops exists around.
Watch R — Google review
I love this beach, it's not that crowded and very clean. It's super nice to walk by during the evening. I have so much fun playing nearby while the sun sets at end of the sea by the horizon. Loved the view. Buy the water was freaking cold. Near by you can find the stature of the fishermen and the random red cubes that I still don't understand what they actually stand for. Hahha. It's super close to the center, however, the food from the kiosks by the sea are very expensive. There is a little fish marker nearby but I haven't tried anything from there.

IJslandvaarder Amandine is a remarkable testament to Ostend's rich maritime heritage. This historic vessel, which intriguingly appears to float in the middle of a street surrounded by ocean water, offers visitors an immersive experience into the past. The museum surrounding Amandine is both informative and interactive, making it a delightful stop for anyone interested in maritime history. Although it operates on a cash-only basis, it's definitely worth seeking out an ATM for this unique experience.

Beaufort Beeldenpark: Rock Strangers - Arne Quinze is a thought-provoking sculpture collection that challenges the uniformity of urban design. The Rock Strangers inject vibrant colors into an otherwise neutral environment, offering a striking contrast. Despite initial mixed opinions, many have come to appreciate and even love the sculptures, finding them to be a source of inspiration and beauty. Situated by the sea, these huge and stunning installations provide picturesque photo opportunities, especially during sunrise and sunset.

Dansende golven is a unique and decorative structure located near the beach, offering a captivating sight of the sea. Depending on the weather, it takes on different appearances, resembling either dancing waves or a tree. The spacious area allows visitors to fully appreciate its beauty. Overall, it's a beautiful and intriguing attraction to explore.
(Translated by Google) You can recognize the silhouette of people and waves in the image. There is a male and female wave. It symbolizes, as it were, a meeting between the waves, the sea and the dynamics. And no, it does not represent a tree as many people think. The artwork is by the Belgian sculptor Patrick Steen who mainly works with metal.

(Translated by Google) "Waves of wonder: a dance along the sea wall of Ostend" On the sea wall of Ostend, where the waves intertwine, A monument appears, a divine dance. A man and woman, in eternal embrace, Their rhythmic unity, a timeless grace. Under the azure, by the murmuring sea, A masterpiece born, visible to everyone. A dance of waves, a lovers ballet, Whispers of Keats in the salt spray. Oh, wanderer, pause a moment on this coastal shore, Where art and nature are increasingly intertwined. Staring at the waves that wander forever, See the rusty shapes in this formed foam. A sweet surprise for the first admirers, A choir of visions under the open sky. A tree, waves, fish, hands intertwined, A dance of elements, rustily defined. A story unfolds in every look, Of trees, of couples, of a dance of waves. Hands that linger, fingers intertwine, A ballet of a man and a woman, a love so sweet. Steen's creation, a story yet untold, A dialogue of forms, a mystery to behold. There is beauty in diversity, An art discourse under an endless sky. So let the waves sing and the wind talk, While the monument of Ostend submerges whispering. A ballet of symbols, a dance of the sea, On the canvas of Zeedijk, for eternity. The Monument of Leopold II stands as a controversial symbol in Belgium, reflecting the country's complex history. Erected in the 1930s, it has sparked debates due to Leopold II's brutal colonial rule in Congo. The plaque acknowledges his atrocities but lacks detailed information. Despite its dark legacy, the monument is a popular spot for visitors to take selfies and enjoy leisurely activities like strolling along the beach or grabbing coffee at nearby restaurants.
At the very end of the beach, this monument is one of a favorite spot to get selfies and we can walk along the beach, get a coffee in nearest resto and having a good times.. 👍
Nuh L — Google review
The equestrian statue of Leopold II is quite controversial. The right-hand section of its base is called "Tribute to the fishing population of Ostend". But the left-hand section, entitled "The thanks of the Congolese to Leopold II for their liberation from Arab slavery", is causing a stir: it depicts "grateful Congolese" worshipping their hero. With what Leopold II had done in the Congo, he would now undoubtedly be accused in the international court of crimes against humanity. But in the 19th century you could get away with it because you were a monarch. Famous images of colonialism are those of children and adults with their hands cut off if they did not want to cooperate, among other things, on rubber plantations. This reign of terror brought in a lot of profits. And with these profits, Leopold II built this neighborhood. Since 1981, the equestrian statue has been protected as a monument. In 2004, someone cut off the hand of one of the figures in the Congolese sculpture group in protest against Leopold II's regime in the Congo. In general, due to Leopold II's colonial regime, the monument is the subject of ongoing controversy and has been vandalized several times. The buildings are architecturally beautiful, but...

Jakub F — Google review
Entrance is free but you can not ascend to the balcony of the statue itself (the entrance is on private property of the former Royal Villa, now a revalidation home). Although the square is an impressive central place and entrygate to the seaside boulevard, the statue has been a constant source of controversy due to the personal involvement of King Leopold II in the colonialism of Congo in Africa. Keen observers may see there is actually a hand missing on one of the statues below the King. It has been sawn of by a local activist group, this is a referral to the former practice of severe capital punishment (the cutting of hands) in Congo.

Well every country has terrible leaders who are idolised and in the case of Belgium its king leopold 2td. The existance of this monument is in itself a reflection of how far mankind has progressed - or not - since it was built in the 1930s. The plaque aludes to his atrocities but not in a great deal of detail so best Google it.

The iconic statue of King Baudoin is a cultural landmark that captivates visitors with its representation of the monarch appearing diminutive in stature. The artwork stands as an emblematic symbol, attracting attention through its aesthetic appeal and historical value. Its portrayal of King Baudoin's smallness imparts a unique perspective on power and authority, prompting observers to contemplate deeper meanings within the piece.

Made of bronze, it shows the king standing, facing the North Sea, in a dignified and sober attitude that almost seems to give him the impetus of a stroll among the passersby. Erected after his death, it movingly embodies the deep attachment of the Belgians to this king, respected for his moral integrity and sense of duty. It is considered one of the biggest attractions in Oostende with well-organized concert events featuring top acts.
Especially the Italian employees are very friendly, my first visit was positive impression, I will visit continuously 🤌🏻

Especially the large concerthall / auditorium which has a capacity of 2.000 seats and excellent acoustics is worth visiting. Besides there's a smaller banquet / ballroom / restaurant-bar and a casino. The building was several times renovated: the architecture is an example of modernism style. In the evening the building is an eyecatcher nicely illuminated for photography.

It's really beautiful a lot of Events!!!

Though far from an awful looking building, it's still a shadow compared to the original Kursaal. They really should have rebuilt it in its glory after WW2. But a lot of Ostend's Belle Epoque was replaced with modernism. Very saddening.

Everything under one roof! Very similar prices to what is available in the UK. However paint prices tend to be higher. Very helpful staff, most speak English. I really can't praise this branch highly enough, they have helped us out of a few problems. Highly recommended.

The staff we spoke to were lovely and very helpful. We were able to find what we needed quickly and easily.

Large supermarket aimed at locals shopping and tourists buying to take home. Good selection of everything but nothing special of anything. Full of people aimlessly wandering about with big trollies. Not the best shopping experience
Gill C — Google review
