The Portland Museum of Art, designed by I.M. Pei, is a renowned institution featuring an extensive collection of over 18,000 artworks dating from the 18th century to the present day. The museum boasts specific collections dedicated to American and European art, including paintings by iconic artists such as Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth, and Edward Hopper. Visitors can also explore contemporary art exhibitions showcasing works by celebrated artists like Alex Katz and Maine-based artist Aaron T Stephan.
Love this museum. Absolutely gorgeous collection of art pieces spread throughout several indoor galleries. Easy to navigate. Staff are friendly and very knowledgeable. There’s a nearby parking garage about 10 minutes walking distance from this museum. We arrived when museum opened at 10:00 and went through entire museum in about 1.5 to 2 hours. Highly recommend this gem! This museum is very clean and well-maintained. There are public restrooms here as well as a store and cafe. Prices are reasonable; we paid $20 per adult.

A nice place to spend a morning or afternoon in the city. Super cool exhibits along with a historic home. The building itself is quite stunning as well! Could easily spend 1-2 hours here. They have discounts for students, youth, and seniors!

I really enjoyed the Portland Museum of Art. It’s a manageable size, which makes it perfect for a casual visit without getting museum fatigue. The first floor has some real gems, including an impressive Whistler and a few stunning works by Sargent. There are also a few Monets that kind of sneak up on you with how peaceful and luminous they are. The whole space feels welcoming, thoughtfully arranged, and not too crowded. It’s a great little cultural break if you’re spending time in Portland.

This museum is in the heart of beautiful downtown Portland Maine. Great adventures short walk through the city to get there. The staff is just wonderful and very informative. Fabulous works of art. 1 of My favorite was the marble statue of our 18th president Ulysses S Grant. It's a must see for all art lovers. I'm looking forward to going back.
Melissa C — Google review
A classic modern build US art museum, architecturally pleasant and well thought out. Cafe and shop. Not cheap to enter. Art is mainly contemporary or modern. None of it great but little is poor. Some I would call folk art. Much of it is interesting. All labelling is achingly woke, and certainly not objective, as befits Portland's status. Beware of large quantities of street sleepers in the area throughout the day. The locals just pretend they are not there since it conflicts with their perception of the place as a liberal heaven.
Mike S — Google review
The real deal- I had a rainy afternoon before a flight, and finally decided to check this museum out, I had passed by several times before. It's surprisingly well-curated, small enough if you wanted to linger over every display in the place you could, but also something you could enjoy in an hour without feeling like you skipped too much. The surprise for me was that museums in smaller cities can be hit or miss, but this one is easily on par with big city collections (just on a small scale). There's public spaces to linger, a variety of art including some loaned masterworks, fun gallery designs that separate the people moving through so it doesn't feel crowded. Regional artists and themes are also well represented. The museum was founded in the late 1800s, so it's not a newcomer- adding to the pedigree is an affiliated art school, and for us visitors, that also means a cool cafe culture in the immediate area- be sure to get your caffeine fix in the area.

We visited on a late Saturday afternoon in mid-June 2025. We arrived with only about 2 hrs before the museum closed. Parking was a bit tricky but we found street parking about a block away. We were prepared to use our NARM (North American Reciprocal Museum) Membership discount which included 2 free adults and kids under 21 are free. BUT It was the Pride Portland Open House. Free Admission All Day 10-6PM. There had a bunch of decorations inside and outside. They had free candies and other merch too. It was cool and very rainbow. When you walk in there was a security guard and a info table to the left. The museum gift shop was just further back on the left. The gift shop was a fairly large size and had some really cool items for sale. The layout was a little confusing but I've been to way more complicated art museums. This one was actually a little bigger than I thought. We started on the main floor we entered in and went all the way to the back of the museum. There were a number of themed rooms back here. I did get scolded by a staff member about taking photos in a section that didn't allow photos. To be fair the no photography signs were TINY and a little symbol on the info plaques for those pieces. I did complain that no one would see that. They told me it was because those pieces were on loan to the museum and with specific instructions that they are not to be photographed as it would decrease their value. Sounds dumb to me but I'm not the owner. There is a large outdoor sculpture area but you have to enter it from the outside of the museum. The front desk lady said we could walk outside afterwards to visit it but that came to bite us in the butt because with 15 mins before closing we decided to head outside to see it and the gate was locked. We went back inside and the lady said oh, the staff must've locked it up early. Sorry... big eye roll... Anyways we went upstairs and there were 3 floors up and a basement I well I think. The other floors were great with art of all type. There were a ton of very colorful pieces which I thought was very fitting for pride month. There are some awesome sculptures on the top floor included what the kids dubbed "seal torpedo". Also the diamond stag like Harry Potter's Patronus. We did take the elevator up and then the stairs back down which were hilarious as there were tons of birds and seagulls hanging from the ceiling and there was a giant window covered in bird poop. I don't know if that was on purpose or not. All the way in the basement there is a small cafe shop. There was no one there and we were not sure if they were open or not. The bathrooms and water fountains are also in the basement. There weren't very many people in the museum honestly. We only saw 5 or 6 groups the ENTIRE time. Overall it was a great visit and we'd definitely visit again. Especially if the price is FREE. It was nice to have the museum mostly to ourselves. Most the other ones we visited on our road trip was SUPER packed. We sort of saw everything in those 2 hrs we were there (minus the outside sculptures) and had time to shop the gift shop. We did run through pretty quickly. I think 3 hrs would've been perfect and we have 3 kids. One of which is ADHD and we survived.
David L — Google review
If you have 2 hrs to spare, why not stroll through the halls of this museum of art. My favorite painting is one of tattered boats overcoming the elements in the aftermath of the storm. I don't understand the contemporary arts but I guess I don't have the eyes for them.

Victoria Mansion, also known as the Morse-Libby House or Morse-Libby Mansion, is a stunning 19th-century Italian villa-style home located in downtown Portland. Built in 1860 as a summer retreat for a wealthy hotelier, it was designed by architect Henry Austin and boasts an asymmetrical structure with a four-story tower, overhanging eaves, inviting verandas, and ornate windows.
Absolutely go see this gem! Lovingly restored and kept, the workmanship is incredible. The decor is lavish. The docents were all so knowledgeable and friendly; and shared so much interesting information that really brought our visit over the top. We spent about an hour here. Be sure to ask about the restoration of the smoking room; specifically the fabrics. It’s an amazing story.

Nice little historical home in Portland. House was been renovated when we arrived so the front was largely in construction. The inside was well maintained and the docents were very knowledgeable and friendly. It is walkable from most of the hotels downtown and by the harbor which was good as there was only street parking. There is a nice little gift shop as well. 2 friendly mainecoons prowl the ground.

Must do a tour! An eye opening view into the rich history of a home built by true craftsmanship and finished by artists. Each wall is hand painted with exquisitely detail. House is completely furnished with all furnishings original to the house - not the era - original to the home when built. With the price of admission to see the home as well as the furnishings. A very knowledgeable volunteer staff provides in depth information on each room and explains the history of the families which owned it and artistry of the build. Home was built in two years!

This was a lovely mansion located close to the Old Port. It's standouts were the ceilings and glass inserts on the doors and windows. Its an hour guided tour. The docent was very informative and friendly. We toured the first two floors. The mansion was well kept. It was fun and interesting.

When searching for things to do in Portland, we came across this. It is definitely worth a visit, as it is a Victorian mansion that you can view almost all of. All of the workers were very knowledgeable and friendly, and it was really neat to be able to see the main floor and the upstairs. The third floor was closed due to fire codes, but we saw a lot more than what you usually get to when you see an old house.
Jeff — Google review
I took a guided one-hour tour in September 2025 -- Our group was small and the wait short. The mansion is exquisitely decorated with detailed wall paintings and ornate, elaborate, well-preserved fixtures and original furnishings. Our docent -- Tom or John(?) -- was extremely well-versed and absolutely delightful in how he shared small details. At the start he stood on a small raised cement slab near the curb in front of the house and explained that the slab he was standing on was purposely placed there in the 1800's to make it easier to climb up into the carriages back in the day. True story! As we walked in front of the carriage house, he said if we listened closely enough we might be able to hear the faint clip clop of horse's hooves which passed back and forth over this very spot pulling carriages daily. I could almost hear it! Very enjoyable tour and an hour well-spent. Highly recommended if you find yourself in Portland.
Kathy G — Google review
Fantastic experience with a guided tour. Victorian Maine is encapsulated in this mansion where you can learn about the families who lived here and see some beautiful woodwork, plaster work and Victorian housewares and furnishings. The gift shop is well-curated with whimsical gifts. A show stopper is seeing Roofie, one of the loveable mascots 🐈 They are renovating the exterior but it does not affect the tour inside. Small wait in the gift shop for the guided tour to begin, but not a big deal.

We loved visiting this authentic estate. Very unique house and history. Our young tour guy was very knowledgeable and answered almost all of our questions.

The Portland Observatory, built in 1807 by Captain Lemuel Moody, is the only remaining wooden maritime signal tower in the U.S. It served as a vital communication tower for ships approaching the Portland docks. The 86-foot-tall building provided shipowners with advance warning of their ships' arrival using a powerful telescope. Visitors can take seasonal tours to learn about its historical significance and enjoy panoramic views of the harbor and even New Hampshire's White Mountains on clear days.
360 views of Portland and the surprise was learning about the man who built and ran it and the relationship to Portland's maritime industry; both fascinating and fun. The staff are helpful! The lady at the top was full of insights that I appreciated and made the experience more wonderful.

If you're interested in local history, I can't recommend stopping here enough! Group tours are capped at 10 people, running every 30 minutes and last about 45 minutes. I recommend double-checking the website or calling in advance to make sure about times when they have guided tours versus not. Additionally the observatory is not handicap accessible. Our docent was very knowledgeable and had done these tours for 7 years. The views from the top are also amazing! Highly recommend!

Very nice tour! Our guide was very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor! Thank you for a pleasant experience ❤️ Amazing views and history!!! FYI There is a fire house next door (just beyond the huge doors) you will find a restroom in case that's needed before or after your tour. Your welcome 😊 .

A unique and important landmark in the history of Portland, ME. We took the 30 minute guided tour up the observatory. The guide provided excellent info on the history, function and operation of the observatory as well as info on Portland's maritime history. A great first stop/orientation to Portland. We had no wait for our tour. Very enjoyable and informative.

Very interesting historical place. Worth the cost to find out about this building. Didn't have time to take the tour, but do want to come back to take it to get more info.
Michael S — Google review
Lovely visit to the Portland Observatory. We had intended on a self-tour but were told that self tours would start at 4:30pm…and that before that time, you would have to take a toured guide up the tower. As there was a scheduled guide about to start soon…we opted to take the guided tour. At that time (mid-week in late August around 12pm) there were only four of us on that tour. Our tour guide, an older woman, was wonderful. As we ascended the tower during the 45-minute tour, we stopped off at each floor and she explained a bit about the tower and its history. Lots of interesting facts! We made it to the top to take in some amazing views of the area. Tours are $10 for adults, $5 for ages 6-16 and free for those 5 and under. The stairs (there are about 100) throughout the tower are spiral-ish…so be careful of your foot placement on the narrowed parts of each step while ascending and descending. Street parking signs can be a bit tricky in the area reading “…no parking on the 1st/2nd/3rd/4th ___day of the month…” Be sure to properly read those signs and park accordingly.
Jemlnlx — Google review
I'm from out of town and this is a must-do activity. Highly recommend doing a tour with the docent. They give a great explanation of the history and structure of the tower and you stop at each of the 7 floors so you have time to catch your breath! Also the views from the top are awesome!! It's $10 per adult, $8 for seniors, $5 for residents.

The Maine Historical Society and the Wadsworth-Longfellow House offer a glimpse into the history of Maine. The house, once home to poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, is filled with estate furnishings and features a charming garden for visitors to explore. Meanwhile, the Maine Historical Society Museum showcases changing exhibitions and programs that span over five centuries of Maine life. With original exhibits featuring art, artifacts, and documents from their extensive collections, visitors can vividly experience Maine's rich history.
Been walking by this place just about every day for two months and every time I walk by, I say one of these days I've GOT to go in. History is cool and Maine History is Super Cool. I've heard nothing but good things about the Maine Historical Society and I'm a big fan of Longfellow's work, going next week and plan on doing a FULL review after I tour both locations.
Douglas G — Google review
The Maine Historical Society Museum in Portland offers a quirky and engaging experience—perfect for a quick escape from the rain. The current exhibits include Best Friends: Mainers and Their Pets, Maine’s Untold Vegetarian History, and Notorious: Maine Crime in the Public Eye, 1690–1940. While you won’t come away with a deep understanding of Portland’s history, the museum’s charm lies in its offbeat, thoughtfully curated displays. It’s a fun, low-key stop for anyone interested in Maine’s more unexpected historical threads. Overall, it’s a brief but enjoyable visit that highlights some of the state’s lesser-known stories.
Michael B — Google review
Had a wonderful conversation with an employee who stopped by the mural we were painting around the corner. He shared a lot of knowledge about the imagery we chose to feature in the piece. Little did we know Longfellow’s house was right around the corner! Thank you!!
Greetings T — Google review
Fun experience. My initial reaction was that the museum felt small and like it would test my patience as there was a lot of reading placards vs "stuff" to look at. Boy was I in for a pleasant surprise. The information was gripping. I found myself looking forward to the next story. I left thinking I learned an awful lot and had a nice base if I wanted to pursue further on my own. Tour of the Wadsworth Longfellow house was also a fun adventure. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly and encouraged a thoughtful experience. It was a little cramped with 10 participants but not horribly so. I definitely recommend.
Melissa H — Google review
We really enjoyed our visit. It is a gorgeous place. Kudos to the staff who put their hilarious spin on the "do not touch" signs! I pretty much went on a treasure hunt, looking for one in each room! Our guide was wonderful, too.
Natosha M — Google review
The two main Wadsworth-Longfellow houses (this and the house in Boston) are unusual in the sheer volume of original artifacts. What distinguishes this house is the rather professorial mien of the guides. Taken in total, it is easy to gain a deeper appreciation for America's most popular poet during the 19th century.
Jason M — Google review
We like to visit a historical society whenever we get a chance because we like learning about the community's history. There's a great food exhibit in the gallery that was really interesting and informative. You can even turn into a Portland Italian sandwich which is obviously for kids, but naturally I couldn't resist. You can also visit the Wadsworth-Longfellow House next door.
Melinda G — Google review
We wanted to visit a museum in Portland that is focused on local history and this was the only one that fit the bill. It was small but quite interesting. It gave us a glimpse of Maine’s past and present through two exhibitions. The first, called “Trade Banners and the Crafts That Built Maine” presented the various trade associations from the mid-1800s, whose collective output was vital to the state’s economy. The second, called “Spark! Maine ART Stories”, showcased the work of contemporary local artists and what Maine means to them. The museum has a nice gift shop offering coffee table books and souvenirs. We stayed for an hour.

Specialty Museums
The International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland is a small but fascinating attraction dedicated to the study of legendary creatures such as Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and mermaids. It's a unique place that appeals to both believers and skeptics alike. The museum features specimens, models, artistic impressions, documents, and personal accounts related to these mysterious animals. While adults may approach with skepticism, kids will be captivated by the collection of photos and life-size replicas of these spooky creatures.
There is a lot going on in this museum. If you like monsters, cryptids, mythical creatures, legends etc I would say its worth it. I am not necessarily a believer in many of these things but am very interested in them as well folklore and this place was a joy to explore. Bigfoot, mermaids, Jersey Devil, aliens, mothman, they are all here! It's two floors has statues, toys, artifacts, and recreations of stuff. It's actually pretty well-organized chaos once you get used to it, every cabinet area has a different cryptid with a card description of the creature. My wife and I actually really liked the old fashion 'cabinet of curiosities' feel of the place. I love that they allow photos (no videos) since there is so much to read a look at you might miss something. It's a really fun museum with a different flavor than most other museums.
Tim W — Google review
You could spend a couple days here if you really wanted to take in all the information. We did a "quick" look and read some of the info and it took us about 1.5 hours. The museum is well laid out, displays are easy to see, and I'm sure anyone could find something of interest here. If you're looking for definitive proof that one of these elusive entities exists, this is not the place. Loren Coleman, the founder, was a scientist and in an effort to prove or disprove a theory, he scrutinized evidence presented. (I found the mummified mermaid very interesting!) The museum had a lot more to offer than just bits of suspiciously found data and sensationalized testimony.
BL — Google review
What a fun museum! Super interesting to learn about different creatures from around the country and the world. The information accompanying everything was the perfect amount to inform but not overwhelm. You can see the care that was used to create this museum in each exhibit. Super cool and would definitely recommend! Could Easily spend over an hour here.
Hailey — Google review
Good for kids in that it might get them interested about biology and zoology, but less a museum and more someone's collection of memorabilia and curiosities. A proper exhibition of a subject like Bigfoot or one of the many unexplained creatures could go a long way to elevating the experience.
Jeffrey G — Google review
We had gone to the Mothman museum in Point Pleasant WV. And we're underwhelmed. So we were hesitant on visiting this museum. We are so glad we visited it. A lot of info, foot print casts, and science fiction movie references. We were here almost a hour and loved it.

The International Cryptozoology Museum is a memorable museum located in Portland, Maine. It is home to a large collection of mysterious objects. It is easy to locate the museum from the parking lot, all you have to do is spot the statue of Bigfoot. Once you’re inside the museum you can wander through several rooms spread over two stories. The museum has all sorts of displays about different “animals” or “monsters” from all around the world. The largest and most memorable displays are of Bigfoot. The casts of Bigfoot’s footprints are definitely interesting. There is also an interesting display on the coelacanth. The coelacanth is a fish which was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1938. Other catchy displays include the Mothman, Loch Ness Monster, New Jersey Devil, and Mermaids. The time you spend in here varies. If you’re interested in it, you could be here for hours, if you’re not, then an hour or less. The gift shop is full of books about cryptozoology, and some of the books are written and autographed by the founder of the museum. It’s definitely an interesting and memorable museum.
Ryan M — Google review
Well now. We came here to see and hear all about big foot, and you'll see a lot of disjointed information about him. I feel as though this place has stuff thrown together about big foot and a few other legends. I will say some of the stuff is rather interesting, but it definitely did not pique my interest in a way where I want to come back. There is also this strange odor while you walk through the museum that isn't pleasant at all. I was personally relieved when we got outside to fresh air. The gentleman at the front was very friendly however. The kids liked it, I think. Overall, a huge collection of Bigfoot related items, but it doesn't offer much else. Expect the whole experience to be self guided.

The Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine is a vibrant and interactive destination for families in Bangor. The museum features seven permanent exhibits that cover a wide range of subjects, including nature, geography, literature, music, art, science, and anatomy. Visitors can explore Maine's ecosystem along a 20-foot waterway in the Nature Trails exhibit or immerse themselves in the world of music at Sounds Abound.
Lovely little place! Staff is always super friendly and there is enough to do for a few hours with kids of all ages. If you’re going to go more than a couple times a year, I highly recommend the membership! 👶🏼: It’s great for all ages but babies and toddlers specifically will love the second floor. There is a soft play area & on the third floor, a light room and water play area! 🅿️: is a PITA. If you get there early enough or go on a not busy day, it’s fine BUT most days, the parking lot is pretty full in front. However, there is plenty of parking behind/close by. Parking is extra $$ though. I think it’s like $2/hr or something. It’s way easier with the Passport app. They will ticket you if you don’t pay! 🛝: There is a nice little outdoor playground with benches, a sand pit, slides, and climbing structure.

This children’s museum offers a ray of make believe, fun crafts and ways to get energy out. They have area for kids under the age of 8 and an area the lighthouse which is for 2yo and younger (meant for non crawlers). They have a small aquarium and huge water table area. Great place to go to in the winter. Downfalls, kids get soaked at the water table area even with apron on. Bring a change of clothes. The space is very tight so when busy no strollers can fit and you are on top of one another. Wish there was more space as it’s defiantly tight inside. Another downfall is you must pay to park. Communal area to put jackets and bags but no lockers. Very easy to steal belongings. Also no food or drink allowed so makes it difficult for the bottle kiddos.

Great place to bring your young ones to enjoy many different areas of play. Outside play area with sand, jungle gym, and music. Inside so much to explore! Water play area, interactive learning, and theater. They are all about STEM! And it is amazing! Check out their website for more information. They have an elevator and stairs. They have picnic tables outside near the outdoor play area. Many benches to sit on for parents to relax as they watch their children. Restrooms on each floor.

Really love the top floor where kids can interact with different elements, air, light, and water. The light exhibit is especially fun and includes a giant camera obscura. The staff in the fish area are really friendly and knowledgeable. They're always engage my kids in conversations about fish and the environment. We've seen shows there too and the staff are very patient and accommodating of my kids, who are in constant motion. They introduced a gift shop this year and that has been challenging. It's unavoidable on the way out and has ruined otherwise lovely visits

If you’ve got the money, this place will keep your kid busy for literally HOURS. We took our 1 year old and he loved the light play, water play, air play, and the fish tanks. It was too expensive for us to afford, but we happened to have a free ticket.

An incredible experience. Made for hands on learning and imaginative play! My child could have stayed there all day and never got bored because there were so many activities and opportunities to be creative. A great place for multi aged children too. The baby area was conveniently next to the imaginative play area for toddlers and kids. Be sure to check out the arts and crafts section too!

Brought our grandchildren here on a lazy Sunday. Thinking we were going to spend $20 per person (which would have been well worth it) we only spent $4. It was "Dollar Day". The museum provided some snacks and juice for the kids. They had a story reading in a movie theater setting with a big screen. The kids loved it!!. After the reading they went to town just playing and interacting with other children. They especially liked the water activities, dress play, the light room, and hours of entertainment with each floor. Great place for safe and family fun!!

We had a great time with our 2 and 4 year old, spending about 2 hours at the museum. Plenty of activities for the kids. They especially liked the dress up activities like fireman and doctor. The water play was super engaging and fun as well! We ended watching a theater show about making chowder. They had each kid in the audience participate in making the chowder. Thank you for the great experience!

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, located at Cumberland Avenue and Congress Streets, is a prominent architectural landmark in Portland. Designed by renowned architect P. C. Keeley in the Gothic Revival Style, it stands as the spiritual center for the Diocese of Maine. The cathedral's impressive size and intricate design are a testament to its 1860s construction. Visitors can admire its grandeur and detailed windows while strolling through the grounds.
Beautiful older church. Could use a little TLC on the outside, but the inside is gorgeous.

The Cathedral is a towering structure in Portland. The Cathedral was build in the 1860s and serves as an example of Gothic Revival. You can develop an appreciation for the sheer size of the building during a walk on the grounds. Note the many windows, which I found to be interesting.

The staff and clergy there is very friendly and don’t shy away from extremely curious people like myself, it’s a beautiful building, they keep us safe even though Bayside is dangerous, I’m excited to become Catholic. I like that there’s a lot of parking, which is very rare in Portland. I also love that they have a microphone so it’s easier to hear. I wish they had cushions on the pews for people with back issues like myself but I understand it’s expensive.

The dome theater provides an immersive setting for traditional stargazing shows as well as thrilling adventures that transport viewers to distant planets and beyond.
I loved this so much. I brought my 10 month old for something to do. Barely did research and knew what we were in for. I’m excited to go back next week now. I loved the retro feel personally. I know some have written about it being old but that was appealing to me. John was awesome and super knowledgeable. We honestly had the best time.

Had an awesome time, went to see The Cowboy Astronomer. Staff was very friendly, and informitive. We showed up abit before our reserved show time, and got to talk with the host for a bit. Even started a little eariler because there wasn't a show before us. Kids had a blast, and you can't take your family out to the movies for $85. They also have some very well done art in the lobby area as well.

My kids had a stellar experience at the planetarium educational seminar! They were thrilled from start to finish. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and engaging, making complex space concepts easy to understand for all ages. 🌌🔭 The interactive exhibits and hands-on activities had my children captivated and eager to learn more about the stars and planets. 🌠🪐 They especially loved the stunning visuals in the dome theater – they said it felt like we were actually traveling through space! A big shoutout to John for creating such an inspiring and educational environment. My kids are already asking when we can go back! 🚀🪐🌌

Friendly staff, fun show for the kids. I didn’t know what to expect and thought there would be more exhibits there, which was fine.

The dinosaur film that was shown when we went was old and corny. The latter portion of the show about stars was more entertaining. Best to check ahead the sked of showings so you can time your arrival. The guides were very friendly and helpful.

The staff deserve 5 stars. The staff were super friendly and supportive. Everything else was 😳 yikes. The planetarium is located in the basement on the campus of USM. The show we watched was a spooky weird low quality laser show. The rest of the planetarium is a smelly hallway with some posters and a telescope.

Brewery
Food & Drink
Allagash Brewing Company, established in 1995, is a prominent fixture in Portland's craft beer scene, celebrated for its Belgian-inspired beers. The brewery's flagship offering, Allagash White, is a renowned witbier brewed with coriander and orange peel that boasts a refreshing and intricate flavor profile. Embracing quality and innovation, Allagash presents an array of brews including the robust Tripel and the bourbon-barrel-aged Curieux.
Unfortunately, we didn’t make it for a dine-in experience but we did stop in the following day to grab a few canned beers and items from their shop. Their shop has a great selection of beers including limited-edition varieties you can’t get in most stores. They also have other souvenirs such as shirts, glasses, mugs, bottle openers and other items. Great environment and space overall…lots of open space with tables and chairs throughout. There is a Bite Into Maine food truck in the front which is a great option. All staff we encountered during our short time there were great…friendly and helpful.

Great brewery! Loved the variety of brews and the food truck options. Service was exceptional and the atmosphere was fun and clean. Good selection of swag and carry out beer products. Prices are reasonable as well. Had a great visit for sure. We'll be back!

Lots of seating! I liked that some of the seating was shaded or covered and some benches had fans. They had a great lobster food truck. Good beers with a selection that isn't available nationwide. I was happy to see cider & cocktail options since I don't drink beer. It was very cool to see they pay their workers well and the tips are donated towards charity.

Allagash Brewing is an absolute must-visit if you’re anywhere near Portland! The vibe here is fantastic — the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the variety of beers was both impressive and delicious. We tried a few different pours and loved every single one. The food truck on-site was a huge bonus. We grabbed lobster rolls, and they were so good that we actually made a second trip back during our short stay just to enjoy them again alongside some more Allagash brews. Between the atmosphere, the outstanding beer selection, and the amazing food, this quickly became one of the highlights of our visit to Portland. If you’re a beer lover (or just someone who appreciates great food and a good time), you’ll love it here!

We loved our tour with Deliah! She was so friendly and excited to share about Allagash and the people who make it what it is. The campus is beautiful and beers are delicious. Lots of on-site only options to try. Everyone who worked there was lovely. Dog friendly patio, with the bar outside so no issues getting drinks.

Pretty cool tasting room. Wish they more food options than just the food truck. Lobster rolls were great. Nice to see a variety of beers.

I feel a little bad giving this rating but we visited on a rainy day and there is no indoor seating and no heaters on in the outdoor seating. We were here once before in 2016 when it was much smaller and genuine. Understood all breweries need to keep expanding to compete but for me this was one of the first old school breweries and was surprised that it became so commercial. On a positive note. Beers were still great and everyone was friendly and helpful.

I really enjoyed the trip on the bay lines! Didn't expect it to be so cheap (under $25) for 3 hours of looking around. Make sure you read the map and the history of each item as you pass it. That was really neat touch. I actually liked being down below as no one was down there, the windows were open and the sun wasn't beating down on you. It also has tables incase you wanna eat dinner.

This turned out to be a great way for us to enjoy a ferry ride around multiple islands in the Portland, Maine area. There are multiple options for Ferry rides. Our choice was for multiple islands hopper ferry that goes to islands, drop passengers and pick them on the way back. It helped that the weather was perfect and sun was about to set. Just loved it. Very low cost for this no frills/luxury ride.

We took the mail boat tour (3pm, late October) and it was a highlight of our time in Portland. This is an absolute must for anyone travelling through. It's pretty cheap, you bring along any food/drinks you'd like, and then just sit back and relax awhile. We brought snacks and some spiked ice teas, sat up on the bow, and had a great time. The sun was setting by the time we were on our way back and it was just perfect. Dress warmer than you think you need to if you're going to sit outside (at least in October). The captain gave some fun notes about the places as we stopped but the ride back was mostly silent and just delightfully peaceful.

Great ride. Just be prepared for the parking to be tough to find and pricey. Plan appropriately as most lots are full on summer weekends. Also tickets are not day and time specific so first come first serve. Never had a problem but be aware
Sherri V — Google review
We took the mail ferry out for a nice ride in the sea. It's takes about 2 hours?? You just ride and look at the beautiful scenery. It stops multiple islands. You could get off I suppose. We just stayed on the ferry and enjoyed the sunshine!
Cindy C — Google review
This was the 2nd time we've used this line for a scenic ride to the outer islands. It lasted about 1.5 hours with some narrating by the crew along the way, and it provides a chance to get a glimpse of those areas for future reference. I do remember one island has golf cart rentals and small roads available to tour around the island, which sounds great. The boat itself was easy on and off, and also wheelchair accessable. The cost of our senior ticket was around $16, which we felt was money well spent. If you found this review helpful, please tap the thumbs up to let me know. Thanks!

The mailboat ride was great! $21 per adult for approximately 2 hours. Relaxing and learned a lot about the islands and watched their mail and supplies get dropped off. We bought the tickets at the dock, and loaded at Gate 3. You can bring your kiddos and pups with you too!

Ball field home to the Portland Sea Dogs, with seating for 7,000+, plus a lighthouse.
We took in a Portland Sea Dogs game last evening at Hadlock Field. A Red Sox AA affiliate, young stars hoping to make it big. Beautiful ball park, family friendly atmosphere with all kinds of fun for kids between innings. The game was well played with some great hits and stellar defense. Great family entertainment for not a lot of money. Parking is somewhat difficult but manageable. You’re going to have a blast!
Glenn N — Google review
First time to see the Sea Dogs. Pretty good overall experience. Be advised though, the parking situation for a game is tricky. There is no parking lot or garage. It's all residential parking. Got to the game late and it was a headache. This stadium is very outdated and old. Not a lot to see here. The crowd was very into the game and the fan base seemed enthusiastic. Unfortunately they lost this one.
Brian D — Google review
Had a great night at a game here! I thought they did great managing the crowd entering the stadium. They had a lot of activities that were entertaining, pretty decent food, and of course the Sea Dogs. Workers were kind and prompt. Loves the fireworks show and I plan to be back!
Caitlin T — Google review
Hadlock Field is a wonderful minor league ballpark in Portland, Maine. The stadium is home to the Double A Portland Sea Dogs of the Eastern League. Many parts of the stadium, including the left-field “Green Monster” wall are designed to emulate Fenway Park. Capacity for the stadium is 7,368. Most of the seats in the stadium provide good sightlines to the field. Some seats have partially obstructed views or limited vision. These seats include some of those along third base and left-field. Others along the first base line also have limited vision. The seats in right-field behind the homerun wall are fantastic, but some parts of the field can be a little hard to see. In some ways, the quirks of the seats add to the charm of the field and stadium. There are two team merchandise stores in the park. Both are well stocked with team merchandise. Concessions in the park include the standard ballpark foods like hotdogs, popcorn, pizza, and burgers. The Sea Dogs Biscuit, which is two chocolate chip cookies with vanilla ice cream in between is a popular choice here. Portland has many craft breweries and many of the most well known brands are served here as well. The team puts together many entertainment activities between innings. The team has a large video board which is easy to see from around the stadium. When the Sea Dogs hit a home run a lighthouse pops up in center-field and shoots fireworks. Nothing says “Maine” quite like that! Parking may be one of the only negatives with this park. There are spaces around the stadium, but the stadium does not have a dedicated lot. If you’re new to the stadium, arrive early and try to find a lot near the stadium. City parking lots are a good option. There is fun to be had by all here. A Sea Dogs game is entertaining. Hadlock Field is a great minor league ballpark!

Love this place and very odd and random thing that I actually really like is the fact that finally in the atleast womans bathroom im assuming mens also is the sinks and paper towel dispensers actually make sense for once literally the only public bathroom that I've ever been in and people don't risk slipping and falling because the paper towel dispensers are right where the sinks are to wash your hands. also the whole place is all around great and very well kept and clean along with every single employee I've met. Even the younger cashiers I've noticed all around great attitudes not playing with there phones and actually look like they enjoy their jobs

The Maine Jewish Museum in Portland, Maine offers a fascinating insight into the history and culture of the state's Jewish community. The museum is housed in a beautiful building that also functions as a synagogue. Visitors can explore various art exhibits featuring works by both Jewish and non-Jewish artists, some of which are available for purchase. The museum provides information about the contributions of Jewish immigrants to Portland's heritage and also highlights significant historical events such as the Holocaust.
Wonderful docents and artists, sharing information about the museum, it's history, and about the synagogue and art within. There is also a tribute to many Jewish people held in captivity by Hamas from the October 7, 2023 attack. A wonderful place to visit. I am on a cruise and I was too late to get onto any of the tourist bus trips and it's a good thing that I was! I just walked around and happened upon this museum...a gem that I would have otherwise missed. I recommend very highly.

This place is so incredible, so special. Over 100 year old, still active Synagogue turned into a Jewish Museum. Totally restored. Rabbi Gary Berenson who grew up in the Synagogue is now the rabbi there. It’s worth a visit and worth hearing his story. Loved the Maine Jewish Hall of Fame and the beautiful art exhibits. Attended a Kosher and Israeli wine tasting. Love the events they curate.

Worth visiting for multiple reasons. For starters, it’s an art gallery, with interesting rotating exhibits. It’s also an exquisite synagogue, and be sure to check out the balcony with a Holocaust memorial consisting of several photographs of survivors and their stories. Free admission — but we gladly donated.

What a pleasant surprise. This was a visit suggested by a local due to their art exhibits and collection. We were amazed at the collection and the thought provoking stories behind the artists. This is a beautiful building with friendly people to offer guidance on your visit. this is a trip worth your time.

What a great place. This is a working synagogue but also has an art gallery incorporated into the community portion of the temple. The artwork, displayed by several artists, Jewish and otherwise, was beautiful and accessible in price. I bought a small piece and waiting for shipment at the end of the showing. I was greeted by Nancy who is a lively, friendly, spirited factotum of the synagogue who also presented an enthusiastic description of the artwork and artists on display. This was a accompanied by a history of the Jewish community in Portland as well as her own familial experiences. The structure of the building is quite interesting and the small area reserved for a daily quorum as well as the larger more formal weekly gatherings was easily accessible and quite picturesque. Donations are recommended but not mandatory although given the quality of the environment it is not too much to ask for individuals to provide patronage of even a nominal amount. All in all a real hidden gem in the city of Portland.

The State Theatre is an incredible venue for live music! I went on Wednesday for a Cameron Whitcomb concert, and the experience was top-notch. The theater has a perfect mix of historic charm and modern sound quality. Intimate enough to feel close to the artist but spacious enough for an energetic crowd. I'm sitting, waiting for my first show (Hocus Pocus!) at this theater. It's absolutely stunning; it's every bit as beautiful as Broadway, NYC theaters. It's clean spacious. We got through check in and security in a flash. What really sets this apart from any other theater I've attended is the people. Everyone is friendly, kind, and helpful. I don't know if it's a regular offering, but the Little Lad's popcorn is crazy good! As a disabled person with a service dog, I've run into issues now and then. Not here! No one asked inappropriate questions or gave me weird looks (IYKYK). I was treated like a regular person. Plus, when I asked if we could go out for a potty break at intermission, the response was "absolutely". I'm already searching for the next show I'll see here. The State Theater is truly a gem.
Laurel C — Google review
This is a decent theatre with nice artistry and architecture, but obviously needs some updates to the bathrooms and seating. My biggest gripe about this venue is the sound quality. I've been to several shows here and the sound always suffers from muddy bass frequencies and obnoxiously loud kick drums that just kill all sound definition and ruins the entire experience. It doesn't matter where you sit or stand in the theater the sound is not enjoyable.
Luke S — Google review
Loved the show at Maine State Theatre. I stepped outside for one minute while the event was still going. Fans were still inside getting autographs and people were moving out at their own pace, which is still part of the event. Somehow that was enough for your bouncer to refuse re-entry, wristband and all, as if basic judgment didn’t apply. Who turns away a paying guest while the venue is still clearing out and fans are engaging with the performers? The music had ended, but the experience clearly wasn’t over. If the goal was to sour an otherwise great night, consider it accomplished. Owners-you may want to review how your door staff handles situations that require common sense.

The Umbrella Cover Museum is a quirky and colorful museum in Portland, featuring a collection of over 1,300 umbrella covers from more than 60 countries. She also provides insights into the history of the umbrella covers and even has an adult-themed room for mature audiences. Visitors appreciate Nancy's knowledge about each cover and her dedication to ensuring a great experience for everyone.
Yes. You're right. "A museum for umbrella covers? How absurd!" BUT this was a highlight of my trip to Peaks Island. The real star here is Nancy 3, the custodian of this collection! The point of her museum is to find wonder in the mundane and celebrate it. However, Nancy 3 is all but mundane. She's a big personality on a little island. Be prepared to participate in her presentation and you'll be rewarded with prizes. She takes you through the history of how and why her museum came to be, she's got games to play, and even a performance at the end where she sings and plays her accordion. You'll be subjected to a little Liberal ideology along the way but don't sweat it, Conservatives, it's Maine after all ... what else would you expect? If you go to Peaks Island and you don't go here, you'll miss one of the Island's real treasures. Don't make that mistake. Stop in!

This was my top experience during my vacation to Maine! The most unique and charming museum I have seen. It’s the people like Nancy 3 that make the world a special place. It’s a quick stop in for free, however I couldn’t help but make a small donation after I met her. I don’t want to spoil all of the fun, but the stop comes with a little tour and a song. Please go check this place out, you won’t regret it!
Brittany G — Google review
The only reason I'm giving this five stars is how ridiculous this place is. But in a good way. I've only been here once but it was the funniest experience I've ever had. The owner makes covers for umbrellas and sings and dances for her customers. It's a museum full of umbrellas and singing and dancing. She talks about making all the umbrellas and history on them. She has a rated r room as well only for adults that contain umbrellas that are adult themed. It obviously has taken her several years on the hundreds she has. It's a fun place to check out on the island. There's no fee but you can donate towards the museum. The building is kinda crowded and small but it's clean. She's only open during summer hours. It's definitely a fun and uplifting place. Google says it's located in Portland but it's an island off of Portland. To get to Peaks Island you have to take a ferry. You can take your car but there's a fee. Peaks Island is a small but busy island during summer season, it's a mini version of Portland. It's a nice getaway from mainland with several other shops and destinations. Overall, 5 stars. Super fun place. Thank You! ❤️

We came to Peak's Island just for this museum, and it did NOT disappoint! Nancy 3 Hoffman was a wonderful tour guide, and her passion about umbrella covers was contagious! I would recommend this museum to anyone visiting Peak's Island or the Portland area.

What a gem! While waiting for our golf cart to be ready next door we stepped into this wonderful world. Nancy, the owner and founder showed us around and played her accordion for us also! The kids were engaged, and it was a fun stop during our day on Peaks Island. You must stop by!

This museum—and the tour provided by the curator/collector—are marvelous fun! Seriously: it’s worth taking the ferry out to Peaks Island just to visit this wonderful place. I’ve been to nearly every tourist site in and around Portland, and this one was the most fun.

Quaint and quirky. After you get off the ferry and hit the main street, this place is just a little room. There's no entry fee, donations welcome. Guinness record holder, though, for most umbrella covers. The lady who runs the place puts on a fun show for kids. Adults should not miss the x-rated bathroom closet with rude umbrella covers and covers from around the world. A quick pit stop that will just take a few minutes. And we're totally donating all of our umbrella covers.

One of the coolest things I’ve ever seen! Although we didn’t meet the owner, a young man explained the collection, read with us, and even played trivia. We stumbled upon this place during our bike ride, and it turned out to be a wonderful surprise!

The Tate House Museum is a circa-1755 clapboard home of a British naval officer, showcasing period furnishings and offering guided tours. It provides an immersive experience into the lifestyle of the 1700s. Visitors can explore the historic setting and learn about how people lived during that era from knowledgeable and friendly tour guides. The museum offers a unique glimpse into the past, making it an enjoyable experience for history enthusiasts.
Very informative tour guide. I learned some local history that I had never heard in my years of living in this area.

Staff was very nice and knowledgeable. Tour was interesting. Incredible to be able able to see such an old house up close and learn of its history.
Mary S — Google review
I cannot rate the tour because, as with much of what we have tried to see on this trip, it's closed for the season. I can however say that the shop attendant was extremely helpful, informative, and went above and beyond to help us find things to do and see while in Maine. Solely based on her friendliness and kind spirit I'd say check out the tour when it's up and going again.

The house was cute and the tour guides very informative. Of course it was look don't touch but you could go through the rooms and look and the decor and wood work up close not just be stuck behind a rope 15 foot away like a lot of museums. It was nice.

I had a wonderful tour of the house while visiting Portland. My tour guide was so knowledgeable and answered all my questions as we walked through. Beautiful rooms and yard, and the office across the street is also worth checking out. Absolutely lovely staff.

Fantastic local history site! We got a tour of the grounds and a history lesson about the home/neighborhood and Portland. Made our visit extra memorable.

If you have an interest in how folks may have lived in the 1700's then strolling through the Tate House and listening to educated, friendly tour guides will be an enjoyable experience. We did a beer tour this evening, learned the importance of an Alewife, enjoyed a cold beverage in the backyard and watched Herons perch in their tree for an evening sleep.

East End Beach is a picturesque waterfront park with a sandy beach, walking trail, and boat launch. It's a pet-friendly destination where dogs can play in the waves and sand while you soak in stunning ocean views. Families can enjoy picnics on the grassy hillside, fly kites, or play frisbee. The area also offers a playground for children, basketball and tennis courts nearby. Visitors can rent kayaks or take tours along the waterfront and enjoy activities like paddleboarding.
Dog friendly beach in Portland! We love coming to this beach whenever we visit Portland to walk our dog. It’s a nice walk from Old Portland and dogs can be off leash. Note that dogs are only allowed early morning and after 5pm (or 4?) though between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Stella L — Google review
I did not attend the beach but did go to the area to the northwest with the boat launch and Rocky area. The boat launch looks to be in very good condition and an easy place to launch a boat. Minimal parking right close but there is a trailer parking place close. The dock looks to be fairly large once you do launch your boat you should be good. 1 hour parking for cars right beside it also.
Musclecarlvr — Google review
Small beach 🏖️ with many amenities. Public restrooms, boat ⛵ launch, kayak, canoe 🛶 and paddle board rentals and duck 🦆 boat access. You can visit via the Eastern Promenade Trail or by vehicle. The beach is a mixture of sand and rocks but you should be able to enter the surf without water shoes.
Stephen P — Google review
The reviews online said dogs were allowed, but it's more complicated than that: according to the sign posted when we went, dogs were NOT allowed on the beach from 9-5 between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Apparently they are allowed other times? The beach itself is small, part sandy and part rocky. Fairly clean. Water is cold, as you'd expect. Shallow water and low waves make it good for wading.
Lindsey I — Google review
Great beach. Dog friendly. There are kayak rental and tours, a great running/multipurpose trail that runs along the waterfront. There is a small train that drives along the shore line. Great parking and accessibility.

June 2023 - with so much rain this Spring, we had to get out and walk on the rare occasion of a nice evening. Even with a heavy haze the views are still spectacular. We enjoy sitting and watching the dogs play after 5 PM. BEACH? No, don't come looking for a huge stretch of sandy beach and swimming. It's a small beach area. People come here for the views, the trail, the activities (kayak, boarding, train ride, food trucks). If you're looking for a beach to lounge on all day, head for Old Orchard Beach or Willard Beach or any of the options nearby. 2021 - Each time I walk or ride the Eastern Prom trail and visit East End Beach, I am reminded why so many people come to visit Maine.

What a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the sea. There is something for everyone whether you want to watch the sail boats, walk the beach and surrounding area or want to take your dog for a walk. There are nearby hills which make the views even better. You will find plenty of room to space out.

Fort Gorges is a 19th-century military fort located on Hog Island in Casco Bay, accessible only by boat. The construction of the fort began in 1858 and was equipped with 26 cannons, but it was never completed due to budget cuts. Despite being obsolete, it offers a unique historical experience and great photo opportunities. Tours to the island are available via water taxi or kayak, providing a close view of its massive structure.
You can only get to the island by tour, water taxi, or private kayak / boat, so plan accordingly. Can be explored at your own risk, but no camping allowed. But the place is open and free to explore, but beware, the inside is only partially maintained with no staff onsite. No electricity or facilities in the fort either. I went via the Kayak tour from Portland Paddle, highly recommend!

Fort Gorges is a very fascinating historical landmark to visit. We toured the fort on a sea kayaking trip with Portland Paddle and our guide Alonzo was very knowledgeable in his information and facts about the fort. We spotted some seals and ospreys on our journey as well. It's definitely worth checking out if you're interested in history and urban exploring.

Did a 2.4 mile paddle from the public dock and it's a paddle with a strong wind and current with heavy boat traffic. Was fun and a surprising challenge. Be careful and check the tide chart and wind conditions if kayaking out. Also watch for fog.
David W — Google review
We kayaked out to Fort Gorges on a beautiful day and had a picnic and explored. We left from Eastern Promenade and it took about 20 minutes to paddle out to the fort. I know many people see this beautiful fort in Casco Bay and wonder what's on the inside. Don't be afraid to hop in kayak on a nice day and see it for yourself. Bring a flashlight and some comfortable shoes. The Fort is maintained but there are some obstacles which will need to be avoided.
James S — Google review
Such a amazing spot! There are no bathrooms which was kind of expected. It is very hard to get to by boat. I would recommend renting a kayak to go across. It certainly brings you back into time. Being able to climb the stairs to the highest point of the fort is very nice as well. A lot of dark areas to explore so be sure to bring a flashlight! Also stay hydrated! Bring a water and maybe some food to enjoy your little adventure around the fort!

Portland Stage is a nonprofit professional theater in Portland, Maine, offering a diverse range of productions from fall through spring. As the state's largest professional theater company, it presents seven mainstage shows annually along with new and experimental works and various events. Additionally, the historic building housing the theater features a 100+ seat auditorium and offers Airbnb listings to support its efforts. The venue is within walking distance of excellent restaurants, making it an ideal spot for a classic date night.
I took my girls to "Play Me A Story" on a Saturday morning, and they had a blast. I wish we had something like this closer to us. We will definitely be back when we come to visit Portland again.

An amazing find in Portland! This is a charming little theater that echoes a gracious elegant past life. The grand staircase to second floor evokes old Hollywood memories and leads you to the second floor entrance. Very comfortable seats and great viewing experience. I attended several shows, all very professionally staged and performed. This is really a welcome addition to Portland. Parking as expected can be a crap shoot. There is a pricey open lot adjacent, as well as a poorly maintained garage structure nearby. Street is possible depending on time of day. Try arriving early and driving around before making your decision.
Rich S — Google review
Saw "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe" this weekend and the acting wasn't nothing short of masterful. Spectacular performance led by lead Thursday Farrar as Marge was stirring, compelling, and emotional. Her counterpart played college professor convincingly and together they successfully built the crescendo of emotion this play deserved. Highly recommend.

Never disappoints. Eleanor was another excellent show. And with the new sippy cups you can take your wine into the theater We have attended since the days Portland Stage was in the parking garage near Monument Square. Still great!

I attended the play Madeleines on Sunday. Such an amazing theater experience in every way! Definitely worth seeing before it moves on to other cities. An added bonus was being able to have a conversation with the folks who worked together to bring this to Portland Stage. I love this theater!
Mary M — Google review
My wife and I just watched Darker Skis, Brighter Stars and with one exception, LOVED it. We both felt the acting was one of the best we have ever seen at Portland Stage. The dialog is SUPER TIGHT and just so very well performed. For the stage crew, the lighting and set design was top-notch and very creative. I even thought the nice touch with the stage hand having a backpack was totally over the top. That one exception—and it’s really huge, is that the play did NOT need to have 3 out of the 6 scenes have woke themes. ONE scene, perhaps with the girl not knowing her feelings, would have been PLENTY (and that would have been 17% of the scenes—far more than the TRUE numbers of our population) but the other scenes simply were’t needed. The two girls might have played out very well if the skittish girl had been a boy instead. As for the two guys—there are SO MANY OTHER themes that could have been used here and it would have been brilliant. So sad Portland Stage had to play it out the way they did.

The Sweetgrass Winery & Distillery Old Port Tasting Room and Shop is a charming brick-lined space where visitors can sample and purchase locally produced wines and spirits. Located in Maine, the establishment prides itself on crafting high-quality products using local fruits and grains. Guests can enjoy a tasting experience for just $5, which includes four samples of items such as dessert wines, gin, and rum.
Make sure you check the hours and go and see Courtney for a tasting. Be sure to try the maple smash, blueberry smash, and the sangria. I have been going to this place and been a fan of Sweet Grass in Union, Maine for 14 years. I love every single product they make. I love thatCourtney understood me and my tastes and what I would like. I luuuv this place.

Everything tasted a bit juicy, but for a sampling of 5 at $10 I really didn’t have too much to complain, expect for the fact that they served the gin with “plain” tonic water from a plastic bottle that’s almost done. Wanted to support local business, so also got a bottle to go, which is when the nightmare began. The cork was too poorly manufactured it broke midway when I tried to open it. The wine was filled with bits of the cork because of that, which was not very fun to drink. Then when l looked at the bottom piece remained in the bottle, it somehow seems grayish and moldy. Not a wine expert but I’ve never seen this and didn’t want to risk it. Ended up dumping the whole bottle.

Had a great time visiting Sweetgrass and doing a tasting here. I am not a gin person, but I was really impressed and ended up buying a bottle! I would absolutely recommend checking this place out of you enjoy tastings -- and they have beers, wines, gin, and rum to sample! Pro Tip: If you do the testing, you get to keep the cup as a cheap souvenir.

This cute quaint tasting room explores a great selection of gins, wines and a whiskey. The bartender was excellent and knowledgeable and the spirits were great! We just wondered in to the tasting room one day and all left with a bottle we bought. The cranberry Gin is great in cocktails! I highly recommend trying this place!

I went here with a couple friends, but couldn't do a tasting due to an upset stomach. The lady working the counter brought me a glass of elderberry bitters to soothe my stomach. When people go above and beyond to be nice, it really makes an impression. The rhubarb liqueur was particularly good according to my friends. Tastings are also only five dollars, plus a complimentary glass.

The cider was a bit dry but the blueberry and cranberry smash was so good if your like something on the sweet side.
Anna L — Google review
Planned this stop for our family visit to Portland. The tasting room is cute, very small, and the price is unbeatable ($5 for 4 tastings). The wines I tried were pretty good, though all the offerings are very niche (wines all infused with various fruits; no classics such as Chardonnay or a plain Cabernet Sauvignon, etc). Was pretty disappointed with the interaction, or rather lack thereof, with the staff. She just stood there silently between tastings, not offering any information about the wines except a basic description while physically pouring them. I even asked a couple questions to stimulate the conversation but was met with minimal response. It made the tasting awkward, especially considering we were the only ones there at the time. So much so that we did the tasting, grabbed a bottle of our favorite, and left, within about 15 minutes. Maybe just an off day for her? Definitely not what I would expect from a wine tasting, especially such a highly rated one.

Went for Disney on Ice, was a great show. We didn't get the best seats in the house, but was still fun to watch. Kids loved it! Of course be prepared to spend money, $8 pizza slices, $40 Disney Princess wands that light up. Worth every penny for the experience!

Everything's great, the goalie is good. The coach still doesn't understand what to do with the team. The coach doesn't let the team shoot at goal. That's why the shots are so bad.

Cross Insurance Arena is a nice cozy venue for hockey games. Most seats in the arena have excellent sight lines to the ice. The seats are comfortable and have a nice amount of legroom. Crowd capacity for hockey games is about 6,700. Both ends of the rink also have ice level lounges that add some premium seating options. There are suite level seats on the corners of the arena. The videoboard is easy to see from all points in the arena. Wherever you sit you’re never very far away from the action. The food and beverage choices in the arena are very good. If you’re a craft beer enthusiast you will love this place. Well known craft beers such as Shipyard, Allagash, and Lone Pine are offered here. There is nothing out of the ordinary with food options, just standard stadium fare. Still, it is pretty good. The concourse areas leading to the seats are decent size, but could be wider in some areas. The arena is located in downtown Portland and is close to other attractions such as the Portland Art Museum and Victoria Mansion. There is a parking garage next to the arena. It is possible to park on the streets as well. For a mid-sized city Portland offers a lot to do. Add going to a Maine Mariners game at the Cross Insurance Arena as one of many interesting things to do in Portland.

Saw Trivium here. Show was great. Sound in a smaller venue for this type of event was a bit muddy, but to be expected because the whole place acts like an echochamber. Lots of security. Lots of floor/mosh space. Clean restrooms. Easy to access drinks. Lots of paid parking options close by.

We visited for a Mariners game and very much enjoyed the visit. Parking at the Spring Street garage made for easy access to the arena. We had a little ticketing issue which the arena handled promptly and professionally. Overall the arena was clean and there were good options for food and drink.

Greatest place to see a show, concert, or a hockey game in Maine. With the newest renovations they minimized the poor seating locations. It really is a great place to see an event. Just checked out another event here, and they had one of the biggest turn outs in Mariner history! Very cool to be a part of it!

Came to see Death Cab for Cutie and Postal Service Friday night. It is a smaller venue but they put on a great show! The bottom area that they use for hockey games was open to GA & was standing but allowed you to be right in the action. There were several spots for drinks, bathrooms, and merch on the main level. Also several openings and exits, lots of security, and a handful of cops posted around. The music was pretty loud as one would expect but you could feel the vibrations on the arena floor (where we were). There are also seats that are further away that may have been a less intense experience. On the floor you also have to pour your drinks into plastic cups instead of keeping them in the cans which I thought was super weird! Bathrooms are a little dated as well but clean and stocked. There is also close street parking, and multiple garage parking. We parked at Spring St parking literally right next to the venue and paid $15 for the entire time we were there (6-11pm), pretty good deal! We really enjoyed our time at the concert and enjoyed this little venue!

I used to come here all the time to see 🙈 concerts when this used to be the Portland Cumberland County Civic Center. I've seen AC⚡DC to ZZTop. It was a good place to go for concerts. Now it is a great 👍 place to see Cirque Du Soleil'! Have your ticket 🎫 ready and you will have to empty your pockets at security. I found my seat 🪑 with the help of an usher. I had a great view of the stage! Cirque Du Soleil' "Cortico" was amazing 🤩 and brilliant! A combination of acting, live music 🎶, drama, humor, acrobatics, gymnastics, juggling, dancing, trapeze and high wire performances! There was even audience participation when a performer with balloons glided over the audience! The sound level 🎚️ was good 👍! I was also nervous watching wire performances without a net. Sorry Van Hager, I watched them at a "Monsters of Rock" show, Cirque Du Soleil' Cortico is truly "Live Without A Net 🥅" ! My friend Author Itis was glad for the intermission because the seat 🪑 was slightly uncomfortable. Being able to find a spot to stretch helped. There is a 2 hours maximum for parking 🅿️ on the street. You will need more time for the show. I highly recommend seeing Cirque Du Soleil' and I am seeing other events at this arena!

Evergreen Cemetery in Portland, established in 1854 and inspired by Mount Auburn in Cambridge, MA, offers picturesque wooded trails for walkers. This sprawling cemetery extends into a preserved wetland and boasts several miles of intersecting shady dirt paths once used as carriage trails. Rural cemeteries gained popularity in the 19th century and served as inspiration for today's urban parks. Visitors should exercise caution when exploring the cemetery due to delicate gravestones dating back to the 1800s.
Great Location for Bird Watching! Dogs are NOT allowed off leash. I've been visiting this Cemetery for years now. The grounds keepers are very nice and look out for the visitors. The staff in the office are always nice and professional. In the Spring this place is loaded with many types of Warblers. During Spring through Fall this beautiful Victorian Cemetery is home to many types of Migratory Birds. Owls, Herons, Egrets, Hawks, Crows, many types of Ducks and song birds. Many small mammals live there as well. The grounds are always well kept and groomed. There are many tiers of this Cemetery and the rolling grassy hills have everything from simple graves all the way up to mausoleums. The winding narrow roads are fascinatingly inviting to the pond. You can see a wingless, headless angel. (there has to be a story there) and many ancient old growth trees. I love this place!

One of the most beautiful cemeteries in the state of Maine. Well kept grounds and a peaceful walk. On a side note - I did see a ghost there in my youth, just outside the church, as I was on my walk out of the cemetery. Not that anyone would believe me without some proof, but I saw what I saw.

Beautiful cemetery and very well taken care of. There are ponds in the back with ducks and geese as well as turtles. There are plenty of squirrels, different kinds of birds, and other wildlife. Geary Brewing Co. is a legendary Maine brewery, being the state's oldest since its establishment in 1983. Despite its small size, it offers a reliable and enjoyable experience with eight rotating taps and free daily tours at 3 p.m. The renovated brewery hosts live bands on weekends and has gained popularity for its flavorful brews like Geary's Pale Ale.
We recently visited the brewery tasting room on a girls trip to Portland after finding it on Groupon and would definitely recommend everyone add it to their itinerary! Paul was extremely informative, helpful, and lovely to chat with. We had a great experience doing the tasting flights! I’m currently not able to drink alcohol and they had a wide variety of non-alcoholic options that he enthusiastically accommodated me with - they even have a subsidiary company that specializes in non-alcoholic options.

If you find yourself in Portland, Maine, a stop at Geary Brewing Co. is an absolute must. What makes this brewery special isn't just the quality of their beer—though that alone would be worth the trip—it's the legacy you're stepping into when you walk through their doors. As Maine's very first craft brewery, founded in 1983, Geary's holds a unique place in New England brewing history. They were crafting authentic British-style ales before "craft beer" was even a household term, pioneering a movement that would eventually transform the entire region into the beer destination it is today. But history aside, what really made my visit memorable was the staff. From the moment I arrived, their knowledge and enthusiasm were immediately apparent. They weren't just pouring beer—they were passionate about sharing the story behind each offering. Whether discussing the traditional brewing methods that have remained largely unchanged since the beginning, or explaining the nuances between their various ales, every interaction felt genuine and informative. I had the pleasure of sampling their full range, and each beer showcased the craftsmanship that's kept Geary's thriving for over four decades. Their flagship Pale Ale remains a testament to their commitment to quality over trends, while their other offerings demonstrate both respect for tradition and a willingness to explore within their style. What struck me most was the balance between pride in their pioneering status and their down-to-earth approachability. The staff made the tasting experience both educational and enjoyable, answering questions with patience and clearly taking pride in what they're serving. If you're a beer enthusiast, a history buff, or simply someone who appreciates excellent craft beer served by people who genuinely care, Geary Brewing Co. deserves a spot on your Maine itinerary. You're not just visiting a brewery—you're experiencing a piece of craft beer history, kept alive by people who respect where they came from while continuing to brew exceptional beer. Highly recommended!
Michael C — Google review
This was a small tasting room compared to most other breweries I’ve visited in the past. However, this is where size really doesn’t matter as it boils down to the potency and flavor of their brews. I have never heard of them previously (also did not even know they were the first NE craft brewery) but noticed patrons walking in and out from the other side of the street. I asked a local friend that I was with and he simply told me to go get a flight in, which I did not hesitate in the least to do. Definitely was worth checking out when in the area. There were a bunch of locals hanging out in there with various brews in their hands. They were obviously proud of the place and welcomed me in as I ordered two flights to taste most of what they had to offer. $20 to taste 8 brews with lovely locals to chat with? Absolutely worth it. Good stuff. Definitely stop by if you’re traveling through.

My son and I stopped here while traveling through Portland. Not only did we get to taste some excellent beers, but we were treated with such kindness. My son had a lot of questions about the brewing process and they went above and beyond in sharing their knowledge and expertise. It was the highlight of his trip!

We had a fantastic time getting a tour of their beer making process! Emmett, our tour guide, was excellent. We sampled a flight of four beers, all of which had not been released to the stores yet. I'll definitely go back!

What can you say?? It's New England's first craft brewery, opened a few months before that MA patriot one. :D They keep it simple with a quaint tasting room, plenty of seating outside in great weather, very comfortable and still fantastic brews!! Definitely recommend!

It was like stepping back in time for my friend & I! Lots of antiques on display. We were free to go upstairs & in the different rooms. The staff on duty was knowledge & friendly and the view from the back porch was breathtaking! Wish I had of had more time to look around but due to wanting to catch the ferry back to mainland we cut the visit short. If you are ex military & enjoy history you will really enjoy this little gem of a find!

Deciding on a venue for your wedding is no small task. From the first contact with the 5th Maine, it was nothing but smooth sailing. Gail and her entire team made the planning, logistics, and execution of our vision absolutely seamless. Extremely affordable, wonderfully accessible facilities, and oh my god THE VIEW! Being Portland residents, and both born and raised in Maine, this was the quintessential Maine Coast wedding venue we could only have dreamed of. Filled with history, it is the absolute perfect place for you to celebrate your nuptials, or enjoy the wonderful museum on your day trip to Peaks. The gardens are perfectly manicured, and believe it or not, we didn’t pay extra for the monarch butterflies filling the garden during our ceremony. If I could give this place, and all it’s staff 100 stars, I would! Thanks again for making our day PERFECT.

Parks
Quarry Run Dog Park is an expansive and secure dog park with a spacious fenced area, including a smaller enclosed section for training purposes. It offers a pleasant mix of wooded areas and open play zones on elevated terrain. Visitors should be mindful of the occasional parking difficulties on busy days, as well as potholes along the dirt road leading to the park. The entrance is equipped with double gates to ensure dogs' safety.
Interesting park. It's a very large wooded and hilly space with trails around and through. Poop bags and trash at the entrance, but no water. Given the space and the terrain, this park is probably not well suited if your dog does not have good recall.
Kindred W — Google review
This is the most unique dog park I’ve ever been to and wish there were more places like this! It’s a large fenced in area with hiking trails! What better way to see how your dog behaves off leash!
Ruth P — Google review
Fun off leash dog park. Fully fenced. Easy to follow trails, clean with plenty of rest spots for pups and their people. Separate fenced in area for the littler pups Bring your own water . Poop bags available at site
Arleen Q — Google review
I take my puppy here a few times a week. There are usually plenty of other dogs for her to play with. It's got a lot of room to run and most people are responsible and clean up after their dogs though some do not so always lookout. There are even bowls laying around just bring water. I bring her own bowl but if you forget or don't want to there are some. My only complaint and it's a BIG on. Is that there are many gaps in the fencing where your dog can definitely get out. I've seen it happen. I keep a good eye on mine at all times and she never goes far from me but definitely they need to go through and add fencing in the areas that are lacking and fix some of the wire fencing that doesn't work for some dogs. If they did that then this would be 5 stars.
Audrey B — Google review
We had a great time here at the dog park today! It was nice to be able to go on a small hike in a fenced area. There was also an open area where we could play fetch. We were mostly alone during the time we were there. The other dogs and people we encountered were friendly! What a great place for Portland dog owners!
Isabel T — Google review
Beautiful dog park! Fenced in woods with lots of areas for pups to run and explore. Was there in the middle of the week in the morning and there were other puppy friends for my dog to play with. Some areas that are shaded have stayed a bit icy. Pack in your own water.
Meghan D — Google review
Amazing place! Really big dog park with trails and plenty of space. This is one of the most unique parks I've been to and will definitely be back. The fenced in area gives plenty of room to run and interactions between dogs and their owners was very positive. This is not your typical park with flat ground. It is hilly with plenty of trees and vegetation to give a dynamic feel depending on the area you choose to roam. A word of caution: my dog cleared the low fence in one jump so keep an eye out if there are incoming or outgoing dogs.
Nick F — Google review
Greta dog park with woods and clearings for your dog to play. Careful though because there are no waste bags. And you need to carry out your own trash. That said, couldn’t ask for a better space

Port City Music Hall is a cozy and contemporary club that showcases a variety of popular touring bands. The atmosphere is intimate, allowing for close proximity to the performers who may even interact with fans on the floor. Upon entering, there is a spacious bar, and if standing isn't your preference, there's also a reserved seating area available (reservation recommended). Whether you're waiting for your favorite band or taking a chance on something new, this venue offers an excellent setting for live shows.
Such a great venue for live shows - it feels more intimate and close. The cocktails are great, but beers will run you about 7$ per - local brews, though. Pool table downstairs, in and out privileges if you get a wristband. Coming from LA, it’s so nice to be able to be this close to the stage!
Will A — Google review
I've enjoyed all the shows I've seen here, it's small and pretty intimate at 500 max, which is great. VIP IS worth it if you have any interest in sitting at ANY point during the show. I also like the bartenders I've dealt with there, and the door folk are friendly and efficient without being unnecessarily intrusive when they're doing their safety check.
V K — Google review
Great venue for a music show. I photographed a hip hop and a jazz fusion show there on a Saturday. The lighting for photography can be improved, but it's not terrible. The beer on tap is solid too if you're a craft beer fan.
Benjamin M — Google review
Port City is a great, intimate venue. Bands on stage are nearly close enough to touch and it's not uncommon for them to step off the stage and join fans on the floor. There is a large bar as you walk in and a reserved seating area off to the side if you aren't in the mood to stand (reserve ahead). Wait for one of your favorites to come to town or take a chance on a new band.

The John Ford Statue stands proudly at a bustling intersection known as Gorham's Corner, paying homage to the legendary film director who hailed from Portland. This impressive 10-foot sculpture captures Ford in a director's chair, gazing towards his childhood home on Munjoy Hill. Surrounding the statue are marble posts that highlight significant milestones in his illustrious career, while plaques detailing his most celebrated films like 'Stagecoach' and 'The Grapes of Wrath' encircle its base.
Nice corner statue of one of the all-time movie makers! It turns out that John Ford great up and graduated from Portland High School. He went on to make some of the greatest movies of all time. Plaques for each of his films have been placed in a circle around the base of the statue. His statue itself depicts him in his directors chair.

There is a cool statue of John Ford in Portland, his home state. Brief descriptions of his movies and accomplishments border the statue.

Public Art and statues provide a city like Portland something to add to the community fabric. This is a statue dedicated to John Ford. It is located a little ways from the central port tourist area but interesting to learn something about the film maker/ director. It is easy to miss the statue since it is not large.
Perks A — Google review
Hollywood film director John Ford was born and raised in the greater Portland area. The statue is situated near the location of his father's store in the old Irish neighborhood of Portland. The statue shows him in a director's chair, looking east toward his childhood home on Munjoy Hill. The statue is surrounded by marble posts that commemorate important achievements in his life. The statue is located at the corner of Danforth and Pleasant streets. There are no actual crosswalks across either street, so be careful. This five way intersection is busy at rush hour and on weekends.

Beautiful wooded trail system right in the heart of Portland. Unfortunately, Jewel falls was a disappointment due to the fact that there hadn't been rain in about a month. Can't wait to go back to see it when it's in its full glory.

Casual little hike right inside Portland. Easy hike, very few hills to maneuver. Unfortunately, when you park and enter, you see homeless encampments and trash. Jewell Falls is fairly close to the lot. I would look for other hikes next time we're visiting Portland.
Steven G — Google review
Not a bad trail but I don't like that dogs are freely running around and owners don't warn you if they will jump on you or not!!! Almost had an altercation with someone because they let their dog run around and it was a big dog not a small tiny dog so it was kind of frightening to the little kids and other people!! It is a nice trail butt people there have no respect

Nice lil hike in portland area. It’s an easy one to do. Great for beginners, walking or biking. The falls in the middle are a great attraction and nice lil surprise for kids. It can be a relaxing hike. Just the falls and back takes about an hour or less. There’s some flaura and fauna to explore. Also you can find mushrooms, squirrels and chipmunks. There’s also some benches to sit and catch a breather. Downside is that no restroom nearby and also there’s quite a few bugs so get a bugspray. Enjoy this lil hike

Great shady loop (we went on the pink trail) with a little bit of hills and tree roots, but fairly easy. Dog friendly. Just be careful of the poison ivy at the start of the trail in the sunny areas. Free parking, but a small lot at the entrance.

Definitely an old favorite... Beautiful views through the marsh... Lots of greats little loops. Jewel falls is a must see. A beautiful piece of woods you'd be surprised to find tucked in Portland. However trails can be quite busy especially in summer months and the falls end is often quite busy

While on a recent trip to Maine my wife and I were looking for a short hike to break up the drive. Fore River Sanctuary was a great pick with lots of trails and lots to see. We happened to go after it had been raining for the last two day so the trails were a little muddy. The trails were well maintained and still very passable. If we were in the area I would definitely like to explore more.

The Portland Fire Museum offers a fascinating journey through the history of the city's fire department, showcasing vintage equipment, badges, and photos. It's a family-friendly destination where kids can engage with historical fire department equipment and even meet Santa during the holidays. The museum features retired firefighters sharing captivating stories about the job's history and displays various artifacts such as old fire engines, dispatch equipment, and books of hydrant locators.

We can’t say enough great things about the Portland Fire Museum! Such an amazing collection of artifacts and history packed into the building! Mike and Dana gave us a personalized tour and provided so much information. We are the family of a former Portland Fire Chief and they pulled out all of their archives from his time with the department. We saw many photos of my great grandfather that we had never seen before. They are so knowledgeable and were doting on our children so they had a great time, too. We were talking about our visit for hours afterwards! Go visit if you have the chance!

Great for the kids and the family. We love going here to see Santa with the little ones during the holidays. Everyone is super friendly. You can see historical fire department equipment while at the same time play with different holiday toys. The Santa here is the best and great with kids. It's a cute park, a couple ball fields, tennis courts, and a young child playground. We were here for the 10 mile race my boyfriend was running. It's a good location to set up an event like that. However, I felt there could be more benches, and his two kiddos and my kiddo, were disappointed that being such a large park, they did not have a playground for upper elementary/lower middle School kids. It left not much to be done having not brought kites thinking a park this size would have a more accommodating playground. Other than that, cute park for a picnic, event, or such.

The last time I was at the Good Theater it was located in downtown Portland ME, parking was not easy. In the new location there is plenty of parking and the lobby of the venue is very welcoming as are the folks that work/volunteer there. This is truly a professional theater that is worth visiting repeatedly!

We were visiting friends that attend this new location theater from S. Portland. we are from Phoenix, AZ. Their new location has plenty of onsite parking. The theater is small and set up of chairs not a bad view anywhere. You are very close to the stage. We attended an early show with Lillius Allen and her pianist Mathis Pickard Wednesday, September 17, 2025. Fabulous show Terrific singer who won a Broadway Tony award for The Life. Her pianist was super talented and received several standing ovations for three solo numbers. Need to get your tickets ahead of the shows. Generally sold out. Brian Allen the originator of this event meets and greets everyone in the lobby after the shows. Impressive. Great person to chat with. Quality show with known experience and acting/singing perform here. Highly recommend this local theater program. You will not be disappointed.

Stopped in for an experience in Maine and was pretty disappointed. The three of us that were there each got a flight and none of us liked any of the wines or the cider. The wines were very sweet and the cider was very over carbonated. We didn't finish them even though we felt bad as the service was great. The server wasn't as knowledgeable as I felt like she should have been but was kind.

May not be for everyone but as things opened up we just had to stop and taste their wares to pass sometime. Jessica (I believe) was very accommodating and welcoming. Lyric Music Theater, located in a charming old church, is known for its community productions of classic musicals and plays. The theater mainly stages musicals and also hosts special events. They offer engaging programming with ASL interpreters available at least once per show and have accessibility aids like a lift for those who need mobility assistance. The talented performers deliver wonderful performances, with great views of the stage from every seat and just the right sound level.
I have seen several shows at Lyric and they have always done a fantastic job! The actors will exceed your expectations every time and the sets are always beautifully crafted. The theater is quaint yet charming, and no matter where you sit, every seat is a good seat. The staff is very welcoming and helpful! The theater does have a parking lot, but for sold out shows you may have a difficult time finding parking on the street. Arrive early and carpool if you can! All in all, I always recommend this local theater!

Great space for community theater! The only reason it does not get five stars is the theater seating. Seats are not offset from the row in front. And be an easy fix.

Lyric always impresses with its shows. The programming is always engaging and they have ASL interpreters available at least once per show. The theater itself has a lift for those who need mobility help, though it was malfunctioning a bit when I was there last. (It was usable but I had to ask someone to hold the upper door closed so it would function correctly. If a disabled person cannot operate an accessibility aid on their own then it renders the aid ineffectual.) Overall a great experience. Would definitely recommend.

I can always count on a wonderful performance. The performers are talented and well prepared for the rolls. Everyone works hard and are engaged with their rolls and/or jobs. They love what they do and it shows! No matter where one sits there is a great view of the stage and the sound level is always just right. The people who help with tickets and the ushers go out of their way to make guests feel welcome and are happy to assist with special accommodations or whatever is needed. Customer service is first rate. During my last visit I arrived at the last minute due to a traffic accident and I was given an usher who led me to a great seat and was told "oh we will just figure out your ticket at intermission, just go in and enjoy!"

Post Office Park is a charming urban oasis located in the Old Port area of Portland. Situated on Exchange Street, it offers a peaceful retreat with shaded benches and frequent live performances by local buskers. Visitors can enjoy people-watching while sipping coffee from nearby bakeries or simply take in the serene atmosphere during their lunch break. The park's lush trees provide ample shade, making it an ideal spot to relax amidst the city's hustle and bustle.

Portland sure has a lot of parks and public squares and there is something unique located at each of them. The Japanese post office box caught my attention. Of course being painted red helps. anthonydiabasephotography, at the formerly profitable Twitter now known as X, wrote that the mailbox was a gift 🎁 from the city 🏙️ of Shinagawa, Japan 🗾 in 1989 to symbolize the link between Portland and Shinagawa. I have been interested in Japanese culture since I was a kid. Even everyday items seem to have a sense of style that catches my eye 👁️. This park or city square connects to Tommy's Park me

A nice but small selection of art. It’s a fun place to walk through if you are in the area or trying to kill time. All of the art is very expensive.
Anna B — Google review
We recently bought 2 oil paintings from this gallery and spent over $3000. Since we live in California, we asked that they be shipped, which the gallery agreed to do. About a week before we were to receive the paintings, UPS called us and told us we needed to pay them $100 for shipping. If we had been told initially by the gallery that would cost an additional $100, we probably would have paid it willingly to get the paintings. But to have this cost tacked on well after the purchase (about 3 weeks later) seemed very unnecessary, and a sign of poor customer service, especially considering how much we spent there. Needless to say, we will not be a returning customer.

Tommy's park is a tiny green space in Portland's Old Port district. It is nicely completed by the identically sized Post Office Park right across Exchange Street. A nice little square in the center of the city. Fun fact, there is an identical twin to this memorial in Washington DC, located in the Disctrict Wharf on Market Pier. It was preserved to remain there by Maine Senator Susan Collins.
John T — Google review
I agree with my fellow Google reviewer that it is more of a city 🏙️ square. The statue, named "Maine Lobsterman", was made in 1939 by Victor Kahill for the New York World's Fair. According to the city's website, Lobsterman Park is composed of .2 acres of cobblestones with trees for shade and benches for sitting. It was a pleasant find while exploring downtown Portland. It is a good dedication to an important part of Maine's commerce and industry. Do not be surprised to see a few homeless people there on the benches.

Nature preserve
Located in a peaceful Portland neighborhood, the Presumpscot River Preserve is a popular destination for leisurely walks along the river banks, offering views of Presumpscot Falls and opportunities for fishing. The 2.5-mile trail begins at Overset Road and descends into a ravine towards the river and the 48-acre nature preserve. The trail provides scenic views of the river and leads to Falmouth, making it ideal for activities like tubing.
A great, easy hiking trail with beautiful, diverse views of the river and the woods. Reachable by transit via the 9a and b routes. Steps and bare soil trails likely inaccessible for those with wheeled mobility devices.
A.J. — Google review
Great hike along the Presumpscot River. Plenty of photo opportunities. The only downside is the folks who let their dogs run free and don't recall them when other people approach.
Doug G — Google review
The Presumpscot River Preserve is one of those hidden gems that makes you forget you’re only minutes from downtown Portland. The moment you step onto the trail, the noise of the city fades into the background and you’re surrounded by tall pines, mossy paths, and the calming rush of the river. The preserve offers a mix of easy to moderate trails that loop along the Presumpscot River, with a few spots that open up to beautiful views and even a small waterfall. It’s a great spot for a casual hike, a trail run, or just a walk with your dog (and yes, you’ll meet plenty of dogs along the way). The terrain varies — some sections are smooth and easy, while others get rooty or a bit steep, especially near the riverbanks. Good footwear definitely helps. In the spring and summer, the place feels lush and vibrant, while fall brings that perfect Maine foliage vibe that makes you want to sit on a rock and just stare at the colors. Parking can be a little tight on Overset Road, so it’s smart to come early or later in the day. The trails are well-marked, but bringing a map or using a hiking app isn’t a bad idea for first-timers. Overall, the Presumpscot River Preserve hits that sweet spot between accessibility and adventure. It’s close enough for a quick nature break but big enough to feel like an escape. Whether you’re hiking, biking, or just looking for a peaceful walk by the water, this preserve delivers every time.
Peter R — Google review
Great trails. Very clean. I I was disappointed for the number of loose dogs my dog and I encountered, BUT it's not posted that they must be leashed. I had just hoped strange dogs wouldn't run up on us. Im not a local, so I didn't get the significance of Tuesday parking.
Sara R — Google review
Easy, well marked, and well maintained trails. Short, moderately steep initial section down to the river bank, then the trail splits to the falls on the right and along the placid river to the left. Falls section is relatively short while the river bank section is a longer hike.

Dan M — Google review
Very interesting street, park and business/commercial section. The square was named after the former Mayor of Portland Frederic E. Boothby, who served as mayor from 1901-1904. The cobblestone street, which is open to vehicles, reminds me of a small street in Norwich, England that used to have cobblestones and was used in an episode of Monty Python. The cobblestones are at the end of Fore Street and take on a circular pattern at the Silver Street intersection. Watching an SUV with a Vermont license plate 🍽️ and the driver sticking his head out the window while watching the road was interesting. The little park in the center of the square ⬜ is a good place to sit 🪑 and enjoy a cup of coffee ☕. The watering trough was dedicated to Adelaide, Frederic Boothby's wife, for her philanthropy. Boothby Square ⬛ has its own Wikipedia page 📄. Exploring the square added to my enjoyment of exploring the city 🏙️🌆 of Portland.

Love this beautiful, warm, and welcoming house of worship that I look forward to attending Eucharist when I am lucky enough to be visiting Portland, Maine.

Beautiful interior, spacious acoustics for the E.M. Skinner organ and choir, and either end adorned with something special - a carved reredos at the altar and the chapel-in-the-round at the narthex.

We attend a dinner here once a month run by a group called SAGE, and the church has always gone out of their way to make sure we have everything to use at our hands. Space is really great as well. I've also attended a friends wedding here and the church really made everyone feel very comfortable.

Nice liturgy. All are welcome. Good music. Welcoming congregation. Sound system needs a little tweaking for hard of hearing.

Thank you St Luke’s for such an incredible space to have our Bach Virtuosi festival! Perfect place to play!

Historical landmark
In the heart of downtown Portland, you'll come across the Charles Q. Clapp House, a striking example of Greek Revival architecture. Built in 1832 by Charles Quincy Clapp, a prominent figure in Maine's history, this yellow house with white columns stands next to the Portland Art Museum. Originally designed and owned by Clapp himself, it is now recognized as a high-style representation of its architectural style.
Built in 1832, the Charles Q Clapp house is a high-style example of Greek Revival architecture. Charles Quincy Clapp was a real estate developer, railroad builder and the eldest son of Maine's first millionaire, Asa G Clapp. Charles Q Clapp designed the house himself along with many other buildings in the city. He lived there only 4 years or so before selling it and moving back into the McLellan house next door which he had owned since 1820. The house was owned by the Portland Society of Art as well as the Maine College of Art before being purchased by the Portland Museum of Art. The house is currently not open to the public.

In the downtown Portland area you will find the Charles Q. Class house. It is next door to the Portland Art Museum. The yellow home has white columns and was believed to have been build in 1872. I found the building to be interesting architecturally and believe it is an example of Greek Revival.

Historical place museum
The McLellan House is an antiquated building of great historical significance, serving as a museum that showcases the rich heritage of yesteryears. This establishment holds immense historical value and offers visitors a glimpse into the past. It houses a vast collection of artifacts, antiques, and memorabilia from different eras, providing an immersive experience for all who visit. The museum's architecture reflects the grandeur of bygone times and represents an important landmark in preserving our collective history.
Part of the Portland Museum 🖼️ of Arts, the house reminds me of the Warner House in Portsmouth, NH, just without the Pablo Picasso pottery. I liked the history that was on display along with the artwork and period furniture, dishes and cutlery. Not all of the house 🏠 was open but I found it interesting
