Portland Head Light is a historic lighthouse that has been in operation since 1791 and now serves as a navigation museum. It is located on the rocky and picturesque coastline within Ft. Williams Park. Visitors can enjoy scenic views of the surrounding area and explore the lighthouse's rich history. Additionally, nearby attractions such as Two Lights State Park offer further opportunities for exploration and enjoyment.
We really enjoyed visiting Portland Head Light, even though it was quite busy when we went. The lighthouse is absolutely stunning — one of the most photographed in the U.S. — and it’s easy to see why. The view over the rocky coastline is just breathtaking. The walking paths around Fort Williams Park are great for exploring and give you plenty of chances to enjoy the landscape and ocean views. There are picnic areas, a small museum in the keeper’s house, and even a couple of food trucks nearby for a quick bite. It’s a place you can easily spend a few hours just walking, taking photos, and soaking in the scenery. Definitely worth the visit if you’re in the Portland area!

The view is just breathtaking. Such a picture perfect place. We got some amazing pictures. Lots of place around for the kids to play. Paid parking We visited first week of October. Make sure to go around sunset and you get amazing photos when the light hits the water.

I visited the Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth on a beautiful Friday evening, and it truly lived up to its reputation as one of Maine’s most breathtaking landmarks. The panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean with waves crashing against the rugged cliffs was absolutely stunning, a perfect spot for photos, quiet reflection, or simply taking in the coastal beauty. Parking was very reasonable at $6 for 2 hours, and there was plenty of space when I arrived. The park closes sharply at 5 PM, so it’s best to plan your visit earlier in the afternoon if you want enough time to explore and enjoy the scenery. Despite being a popular attraction, it wasn’t crowded during my visit, which made it even more peaceful. The historical significance of this lighthouse adds so much character. Built in 1791, it’s the oldest lighthouse in Maine, and you can feel that sense of heritage as you walk around the surrounding Fort Williams Park. The nearby museum gives a quick but insightful peek into its past, from guiding early ships to serving as a symbol of maritime resilience. Overall, Portland Head Light is a must-visit serene, scenic, and rich with history. I walked away feeling both relaxed and inspired, watching the sunset cast a golden glow across the lighthouse and the sea.

Such a wonderful lighthouse with BEAUTIFUL views. There is a small museum with admission only being a couple dollars per person and it is very worth it. So much history there, it’s fascinating. The trails were maintained and plenty of parking. Several food and coffee trucks scattered throughout the grounds as well.
Achlee B — Google review
Beautiful views! Parking is plenty, but the light house area is quite a walk from parking - BUT this little spot in the world is so beautiful!! There are food trucks in several areas in this park - we tried the blueberry pie ice cream and the black raspberry ice cream truck near the light house and it was AMAZING! There is a small fee for parking, but the parking meters are easily accessible. There are porta-potties near the parking area.
Tracey C — Google review
I don’t even know where to start — Portland Head Light did not disappoint! The scenery was absolutely amazing. My husband, our toddler, and I wandered around for a few hours just taking in the views and snapping tons of photos. Our little one was thrilled watching all the boats out in the bay. It was so fun to see everyone enjoying the beauty of this place. If you’re in the area, take the time to go check it out, it’s 100% worth it!

This is a lovely light House outside of Portland in Cape Elizabeth. If you have a car you can drive there and pay for parking. There is a public bus that will take you half way but you will have to walk 45 minutes the rest of the way. Your best bet would be Uber or Lyft. Its not much going ($15) but double the price ($41) returning. It takes about 15 minutes. Reception is very bad there also so it'll take a while for a signal. You may want to reserve an Uber back. It's worth it for the views. There is also a cliff walk and Fort Williams. The Lighthouse museum is $2 located in the Lighthouse keeper's house. They also have a short tour conducted by a park ranger at 11:00am. They have three food trucks located in the park. It should take about 4-5 hours.

Beautiful lighthouse! The wind was really strong and chilly here even on a sunny day in the second week of October. You can walk along the coastal trail to see various views of the lighthouse.

The Portland Museum of Art, designed by I.M. Pei, is a renowned institution featuring an extensive collection of over 18,000 artworks dating from the 18th century to the present day. The museum boasts specific collections dedicated to American and European art, including paintings by iconic artists such as Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth, and Edward Hopper. Visitors can also explore contemporary art exhibitions showcasing works by celebrated artists like Alex Katz and Maine-based artist Aaron T Stephan.
Love this museum. Absolutely gorgeous collection of art pieces spread throughout several indoor galleries. Easy to navigate. Staff are friendly and very knowledgeable. There’s a nearby parking garage about 10 minutes walking distance from this museum. We arrived when museum opened at 10:00 and went through entire museum in about 1.5 to 2 hours. Highly recommend this gem! This museum is very clean and well-maintained. There are public restrooms here as well as a store and cafe. Prices are reasonable; we paid $20 per adult.

A nice place to spend a morning or afternoon in the city. Super cool exhibits along with a historic home. The building itself is quite stunning as well! Could easily spend 1-2 hours here. They have discounts for students, youth, and seniors!

I really enjoyed the Portland Museum of Art. It’s a manageable size, which makes it perfect for a casual visit without getting museum fatigue. The first floor has some real gems, including an impressive Whistler and a few stunning works by Sargent. There are also a few Monets that kind of sneak up on you with how peaceful and luminous they are. The whole space feels welcoming, thoughtfully arranged, and not too crowded. It’s a great little cultural break if you’re spending time in Portland.

This museum is in the heart of beautiful downtown Portland Maine. Great adventures short walk through the city to get there. The staff is just wonderful and very informative. Fabulous works of art. 1 of My favorite was the marble statue of our 18th president Ulysses S Grant. It's a must see for all art lovers. I'm looking forward to going back.

A classic modern build US art museum, architecturally pleasant and well thought out. Cafe and shop. Not cheap to enter. Art is mainly contemporary or modern. None of it great but little is poor. Some I would call folk art. Much of it is interesting. All labelling is achingly woke, and certainly not objective, as befits Portland's status. Beware of large quantities of street sleepers in the area throughout the day. The locals just pretend they are not there since it conflicts with their perception of the place as a liberal heaven.
Mike S — Google review
The real deal- I had a rainy afternoon before a flight, and finally decided to check this museum out, I had passed by several times before. It's surprisingly well-curated, small enough if you wanted to linger over every display in the place you could, but also something you could enjoy in an hour without feeling like you skipped too much. The surprise for me was that museums in smaller cities can be hit or miss, but this one is easily on par with big city collections (just on a small scale). There's public spaces to linger, a variety of art including some loaned masterworks, fun gallery designs that separate the people moving through so it doesn't feel crowded. Regional artists and themes are also well represented. The museum was founded in the late 1800s, so it's not a newcomer- adding to the pedigree is an affiliated art school, and for us visitors, that also means a cool cafe culture in the immediate area- be sure to get your caffeine fix in the area.

We visited on a late Saturday afternoon in mid-June 2025. We arrived with only about 2 hrs before the museum closed. Parking was a bit tricky but we found street parking about a block away. We were prepared to use our NARM (North American Reciprocal Museum) Membership discount which included 2 free adults and kids under 21 are free. BUT It was the Pride Portland Open House. Free Admission All Day 10-6PM. There had a bunch of decorations inside and outside. They had free candies and other merch too. It was cool and very rainbow. When you walk in there was a security guard and a info table to the left. The museum gift shop was just further back on the left. The gift shop was a fairly large size and had some really cool items for sale. The layout was a little confusing but I've been to way more complicated art museums. This one was actually a little bigger than I thought. We started on the main floor we entered in and went all the way to the back of the museum. There were a number of themed rooms back here. I did get scolded by a staff member about taking photos in a section that didn't allow photos. To be fair the no photography signs were TINY and a little symbol on the info plaques for those pieces. I did complain that no one would see that. They told me it was because those pieces were on loan to the museum and with specific instructions that they are not to be photographed as it would decrease their value. Sounds dumb to me but I'm not the owner. There is a large outdoor sculpture area but you have to enter it from the outside of the museum. The front desk lady said we could walk outside afterwards to visit it but that came to bite us in the butt because with 15 mins before closing we decided to head outside to see it and the gate was locked. We went back inside and the lady said oh, the staff must've locked it up early. Sorry... big eye roll... Anyways we went upstairs and there were 3 floors up and a basement I well I think. The other floors were great with art of all type. There were a ton of very colorful pieces which I thought was very fitting for pride month. There are some awesome sculptures on the top floor included what the kids dubbed "seal torpedo". Also the diamond stag like Harry Potter's Patronus. We did take the elevator up and then the stairs back down which were hilarious as there were tons of birds and seagulls hanging from the ceiling and there was a giant window covered in bird poop. I don't know if that was on purpose or not. All the way in the basement there is a small cafe shop. There was no one there and we were not sure if they were open or not. The bathrooms and water fountains are also in the basement. There weren't very many people in the museum honestly. We only saw 5 or 6 groups the ENTIRE time. Overall it was a great visit and we'd definitely visit again. Especially if the price is FREE. It was nice to have the museum mostly to ourselves. Most the other ones we visited on our road trip was SUPER packed. We sort of saw everything in those 2 hrs we were there (minus the outside sculptures) and had time to shop the gift shop. We did run through pretty quickly. I think 3 hrs would've been perfect and we have 3 kids. One of which is ADHD and we survived.
David L — Google review
If you have 2 hrs to spare, why not stroll through the halls of this museum of art. My favorite painting is one of tattered boats overcoming the elements in the aftermath of the storm. I don't understand the contemporary arts but I guess I don't have the eyes for them.

Park
Bug Light Park, also known as Portland Breakwater Light, is a charming 9-acre green space offering stunning views of the harbor and city skyline. The park features a quaint lighthouse dating back to 1875, affectionately nicknamed Bug Light due to its small size. Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks along the Greenbelt Walkway, a 5.6-mile path that leads to the park and extends further into Knightville.
Bug Light Park is a true hidden gem in South Portland. The view from the park is absolutely spectacular, especially the stunning skyline of Portland across the bay. It's a peaceful and scenic spot where you can enjoy the fresh ocean breeze and watch the boats go by. The park is very well maintained — the grass is neatly trimmed, the walking paths are clear, and the entire area feels safe and clean. There’s plenty of parking available, even on a busy Sunday, which makes it very convenient. It’s also a great place for families and pet owners. There are wide open spaces where children can run around or play, and dogs are welcome as well. It’s the kind of park where you could easily spend a quiet afternoon reading, picnicking, or just enjoying the view. The only downside is that I didn’t see any public restrooms, which could be inconvenient if you plan to stay for a while. Still, that’s a small issue compared to everything the park offers. Overall, Bug Light Park is a must-visit for anyone coming to the Portland area who wants beautiful views, fresh air, and a peaceful atmosphere. Highly recommended!

Bug Light Park We stopped by this park area to view the Lighthouse. This park is very clean and laid out nicely. Lots of area to enjoy the scenery overlooking the bay and take a break you’re your hectic lives. You can fly kits, fish or hike the park. There are benches and even a history panel with lots of history about this areas ship building in WW2. The lighthouse is easy to walk out to and it’s in great shape for being built in 1875. We just enjoyed the day in this park and were glad we went there. There is plenty of room for parking your car. I must give this Lighthouse and park a 5 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Follow Me On FB For More Reviews & Fun Gulf Coast Terry

We started our road bike ride from here. This lighthouse is very different, it is smaller, but the City of Portland makes for a dramatic backdrop, more so if there isn't a cruise ship parked in between. Our ride loop took us south to Prouts Neck, over to Two Lights, up to the Portland Head Light, then to the Spring Point lighthouse and back over to Bug Light - super cool loop.

Lots of people walking around and taking pictures. There is a lot of space for blankets for picnics and picnic benches. We saw some people grab lobsters and eat them there. Fisherman were getting on their boats, kids were playing, dogs were running... Just a great area with chill happy vibes.

Victoria Mansion, also known as the Morse-Libby House or Morse-Libby Mansion, is a stunning 19th-century Italian villa-style home located in downtown Portland. Built in 1860 as a summer retreat for a wealthy hotelier, it was designed by architect Henry Austin and boasts an asymmetrical structure with a four-story tower, overhanging eaves, inviting verandas, and ornate windows.
Absolutely go see this gem! Lovingly restored and kept, the workmanship is incredible. The decor is lavish. The docents were all so knowledgeable and friendly; and shared so much interesting information that really brought our visit over the top. We spent about an hour here. Be sure to ask about the restoration of the smoking room; specifically the fabrics. It’s an amazing story.
Ann G — Google review
Nice little historical home in Portland. House was been renovated when we arrived so the front was largely in construction. The inside was well maintained and the docents were very knowledgeable and friendly. It is walkable from most of the hotels downtown and by the harbor which was good as there was only street parking. There is a nice little gift shop as well. 2 friendly mainecoons prowl the ground.
Michael S — Google review
Must do a tour! An eye opening view into the rich history of a home built by true craftsmanship and finished by artists. Each wall is hand painted with exquisitely detail. House is completely furnished with all furnishings original to the house - not the era - original to the home when built. With the price of admission to see the home as well as the furnishings. A very knowledgeable volunteer staff provides in depth information on each room and explains the history of the families which owned it and artistry of the build. Home was built in two years!

This was a lovely mansion located close to the Old Port. It's standouts were the ceilings and glass inserts on the doors and windows. Its an hour guided tour. The docent was very informative and friendly. We toured the first two floors. The mansion was well kept. It was fun and interesting.

Victoria Mansion blew me away with its incredible Italianate design and rich details. The soaring tower, intricate woodwork, and stained-glass skylight are just breathtaking. Inside, nearly everything is original—furnishings, artwork, and even the heating system! Our guide, Tom, was fantastic—knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about the mansion’s history. He really brought each room to life. If you're into historic architecture or interior design, this place is a must-see. Truly inspiring.
Sai B — Google review
When searching for things to do in Portland, we came across this. It is definitely worth a visit, as it is a Victorian mansion that you can view almost all of. All of the workers were very knowledgeable and friendly, and it was really neat to be able to see the main floor and the upstairs. The third floor was closed due to fire codes, but we saw a lot more than what you usually get to when you see an old house.
Jeff — Google review
Fantastic experience with a guided tour. Victorian Maine is encapsulated in this mansion where you can learn about the families who lived here and see some beautiful woodwork, plaster work and Victorian housewares and furnishings. The gift shop is well-curated with whimsical gifts. A show stopper is seeing Roofie, one of the loveable mascots 🐈 They are renovating the exterior but it does not affect the tour inside. Small wait in the gift shop for the guided tour to begin, but not a big deal.

The Portland Observatory, built in 1807 by Captain Lemuel Moody, is the only remaining wooden maritime signal tower in the U.S. It served as a vital communication tower for ships approaching the Portland docks. The 86-foot-tall building provided shipowners with advance warning of their ships' arrival using a powerful telescope. Visitors can take seasonal tours to learn about its historical significance and enjoy panoramic views of the harbor and even New Hampshire's White Mountains on clear days.
History is important! Highly recommend visiting and hearing about the signal house. It's neat to hear what they had to do back then. It's not a lighthouse, it served a completely different purpose. The tours are guided during the day, and self-guided after 430pm. There is a family discount. 2 parents, up to 4 kids is $30.

360 views of Portland and the surprise was learning about the man who built and ran it and the relationship to Portland's maritime industry; both fascinating and fun. The staff are helpful! The lady at the top was full of insights that I appreciated and made the experience more wonderful.

If you're interested in local history, I can't recommend stopping here enough! Group tours are capped at 10 people, running every 30 minutes and last about 45 minutes. I recommend double-checking the website or calling in advance to make sure about times when they have guided tours versus not. Additionally the observatory is not handicap accessible. Our docent was very knowledgeable and had done these tours for 7 years. The views from the top are also amazing! Highly recommend!

Very nice tour! Our guide was very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor! Thank you for a pleasant experience ❤️ Amazing views and history!!! FYI There is a fire house next door (just beyond the huge doors) you will find a restroom in case that's needed before or after your tour. Your welcome 😊 .

A unique and important landmark in the history of Portland, ME. We took the 30 minute guided tour up the observatory. The guide provided excellent info on the history, function and operation of the observatory as well as info on Portland's maritime history. A great first stop/orientation to Portland. We had no wait for our tour. Very enjoyable and informative.

Very interesting historical place. Worth the cost to find out about this building. Didn't have time to take the tour, but do want to come back to take it to get more info.
Michael S — Google review
Lovely visit to the Portland Observatory. We had intended on a self-tour but were told that self tours would start at 4:30pm…and that before that time, you would have to take a toured guide up the tower. As there was a scheduled guide about to start soon…we opted to take the guided tour. At that time (mid-week in late August around 12pm) there were only four of us on that tour. Our tour guide, an older woman, was wonderful. As we ascended the tower during the 45-minute tour, we stopped off at each floor and she explained a bit about the tower and its history. Lots of interesting facts! We made it to the top to take in some amazing views of the area. Tours are $10 for adults, $5 for ages 6-16 and free for those 5 and under. The stairs (there are about 100) throughout the tower are spiral-ish…so be careful of your foot placement on the narrowed parts of each step while ascending and descending. Street parking signs can be a bit tricky in the area reading “…no parking on the 1st/2nd/3rd/4th ___day of the month…” Be sure to properly read those signs and park accordingly.
Jemlnlx — Google review
I'm from out of town and this is a must-do activity. Highly recommend doing a tour with the docent. They give a great explanation of the history and structure of the tower and you stop at each of the 7 floors so you have time to catch your breath! Also the views from the top are awesome!! It's $10 per adult, $8 for seniors, $5 for residents.

Lighthouses
Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse is a historic caisson-style lighthouse that was built in 1897 on a rocky breakwater. It is open year-round and offers a unique experience as the only caisson-style lighthouse in America that you can walk to, connected to land via a breakwater on the campus of Southern Maine Community College.
This was a fun find! The parking is a little confusing since it’s on a college. There’s a nice beach to play on and you can walk out to the lighthouse if you are able to jump across some rocks. It was a little tricky with a one year old but I managed to do it. They offer tours on certain days of the week but my daughter was too small for it. There was a volunteer out there answering questions. There’s a small gift shop as well. This was a nice hidden gem.
Chelsea R — Google review
A bit challenging finding parking as this area is shared with the Southern Maine Community College. Many of the lots nearby are designated for “student” or “faculty” parking. There is a small lot near the Lighthouse Circle but there are only a few spots there. We were able to park on Benjamin Pickett Street which is a short 5-10 minute walk to the lighthouse area. There is a bit of a walk out onto the lighthouse area…lots of large but stable rocks but be mindful of your foot placement as there are some larger gaps in the rocks throughout. Once you are there though, there are some lovely views of the lighthouse and waterfront. People were there relaxing and some even fishing while on the rocks. Free to park and walk the lighthouse and nearby Fort Preble in my experience.
Jemlnlx — Google review
Beautiful setting, on campus grounds. Tough rocky walk if you want to go to it. There is a small friendly gift shop and occasional tours. Parking is a little hard during tkitties. The old fort remains are fenced off, not accessible. No real rest rooms only portable ootties.
Bob R — Google review
Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse was one of the most beautiful stops on our trip. The walk out to the lighthouse along the granite breakwater is stunning — especially on a clear day when the ocean sparkles and you can feel that crisp Maine breeze. It’s not a difficult walk, but you do need to watch your step on the rocks, which only adds to the charm of the adventure. Once you reach the lighthouse, the view of the harbor and surrounding coastline is breathtaking. Built in the late 1890s, this historic “sparkplug” lighthouse once guided countless ships safely into Portland Harbor. Standing there at the end of the breakwater, it’s easy to imagine what it must have been like over a century ago when keepers tended the light through rough seas and cold winters. Today, it’s beautifully preserved and offers a quiet moment to soak in both the scenery and the history. It’s the perfect spot for anyone who loves lighthouses, coastal walks, or a little piece of New England magic.

Another very cool lighthouse close to Portland, we found this on a bicycle ride. Very pretty with Peak's Island as a backdrop. You can see several old forts from here. There is a long causeway that leads out to the actual lighthouse and you can get good views from several vantage points. Probably crowded during the season, but we were here in October and on bikes, you're not fighting for parking. There aren't any tickets required to my knowledge.

Pretty magical lighthouse. You can walk out to it. You can walk around it. There are a lot of spider webs which is pretty cool if you like. Spider webs. You can even view it at night time. There is a gift shop on the coast if interested. It is a great morning walk with coffee. Enjoy the view in the sunrise and the beauty

While visiting Portland, I wanted to see Portland Head Lighthouse but noticed Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse was not far away. Definitely worth the visit if you can find parking, which may be difficult on some days since it’s shared with the local community college. You’ll need to be careful walking the rocky path out to the light, but it’s worth it. This is one of only a few lights in Maine that offer tours. The tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable explaining the history and function of the light, going through each level from the kitchen to the light keeper’s quarters to the assistant’s quarters to the beacon. Fun to ring the bell at the end of the tour. Be sure to visit if you’re in the area!

Fun lighthouse at the end of a breakwater. It takes a few minutes to make it out there, it's not a paved path by any means but the rocks are pretty flat and easy to walk across. Parking can be tough; we were about to have to park several blocks away before we lucked into a visitor spot in the university lot.

The International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland is a small but fascinating attraction dedicated to the study of legendary creatures such as Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and mermaids. It's a unique place that appeals to both believers and skeptics alike. The museum features specimens, models, artistic impressions, documents, and personal accounts related to these mysterious animals. While adults may approach with skepticism, kids will be captivated by the collection of photos and life-size replicas of these spooky creatures.
There is a lot going on in this museum. If you like monsters, cryptids, mythical creatures, legends etc I would say its worth it. I am not necessarily a believer in many of these things but am very interested in them as well folklore and this place was a joy to explore. Bigfoot, mermaids, Jersey Devil, aliens, mothman, they are all here! It's two floors has statues, toys, artifacts, and recreations of stuff. It's actually pretty well-organized chaos once you get used to it, every cabinet area has a different cryptid with a card description of the creature. My wife and I actually really liked the old fashion 'cabinet of curiosities' feel of the place. I love that they allow photos (no videos) since there is so much to read a look at you might miss something. It's a really fun museum with a different flavor than most other museums.
Tim W — Google review
You could spend a couple days here if you really wanted to take in all the information. We did a "quick" look and read some of the info and it took us about 1.5 hours. The museum is well laid out, displays are easy to see, and I'm sure anyone could find something of interest here. If you're looking for definitive proof that one of these elusive entities exists, this is not the place. Loren Coleman, the founder, was a scientist and in an effort to prove or disprove a theory, he scrutinized evidence presented. (I found the mummified mermaid very interesting!) The museum had a lot more to offer than just bits of suspiciously found data and sensationalized testimony.

What a fun museum! Super interesting to learn about different creatures from around the country and the world. The information accompanying everything was the perfect amount to inform but not overwhelm. You can see the care that was used to create this museum in each exhibit. Super cool and would definitely recommend! Could Easily spend over an hour here.
Hailey — Google review
Good for kids in that it might get them interested about biology and zoology, but less a museum and more someone's collection of memorabilia and curiosities. A proper exhibition of a subject like Bigfoot or one of the many unexplained creatures could go a long way to elevating the experience.

We had gone to the Mothman museum in Point Pleasant WV. And we're underwhelmed. So we were hesitant on visiting this museum. We are so glad we visited it. A lot of info, foot print casts, and science fiction movie references. We were here almost a hour and loved it.

Absolutely loved it! Been wanting to come see it for over 15 years. We literally drove from Alabama over 23 hours. Well worth it

The International Cryptozoology Museum is a memorable museum located in Portland, Maine. It is home to a large collection of mysterious objects. It is easy to locate the museum from the parking lot, all you have to do is spot the statue of Bigfoot. Once you’re inside the museum you can wander through several rooms spread over two stories. The museum has all sorts of displays about different “animals” or “monsters” from all around the world. The largest and most memorable displays are of Bigfoot. The casts of Bigfoot’s footprints are definitely interesting. There is also an interesting display on the coelacanth. The coelacanth is a fish which was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1938. Other catchy displays include the Mothman, Loch Ness Monster, New Jersey Devil, and Mermaids. The time you spend in here varies. If you’re interested in it, you could be here for hours, if you’re not, then an hour or less. The gift shop is full of books about cryptozoology, and some of the books are written and autographed by the founder of the museum. It’s definitely an interesting and memorable museum.
Ryan M — Google review
Well now. We came here to see and hear all about big foot, and you'll see a lot of disjointed information about him. I feel as though this place has stuff thrown together about big foot and a few other legends. I will say some of the stuff is rather interesting, but it definitely did not pique my interest in a way where I want to come back. There is also this strange odor while you walk through the museum that isn't pleasant at all. I was personally relieved when we got outside to fresh air. The gentleman at the front was very friendly however. The kids liked it, I think. Overall, a huge collection of Bigfoot related items, but it doesn't offer much else. Expect the whole experience to be self guided.

Mad Horse Theatre Company has been captivating audiences for over 30 years with its exceptional and thought-provoking performances. As a non-profit organization, they curate edgy and innovative plays that leave viewers pondering their hidden depths long after the curtains close. Located in South Portland, Maine, this fantastic performing arts theatre offers an intimate experience with professional actors and contributes to the vibrancy of the local art scene.
What a great theater! They did a magnificent performance of “Quills”. It is a small, intimate theater. The staging was well done and the actors were great despite one of the coldest nights in 50 years. The show must go on, and it did. Their pricing policy is donate after the show. If you didn’t like it nothing lost. I highly recommend this wonderful Art House.

This is what live theater is all about. Great space. Easy parking. Fun shows with talented cast members.

Gone to two shows now, loved every minute. The cookies at the concession stand are fresh baked and so good. They make sure you're prepared for the show with reminders of how long it is and to use the bathroom before the show, ear plugs if it's loud, etc. Will definitely go again.

Mad Horse is a fantastic place to enjoy theatre in Maine. Not only do they put on great shows, they give so much back to the community that you feel like you're watching the improvement of Maine theatre happen around you. Their small warehouse black box feels cramped at first, but show after show I am amazed at seeing what they can do and how they can morph their space. The three-sided audience keeps you in the atmosphere of the play while also allowing you to simultaneously experience art with a total stranger. Pay what you can tickets offered for every show, and fantastic student discounts, make Mad Horse the place to be for theatre in Maine whenever their shows come around.

Fantastic little theater with an excellent cast. The plays the company selects are unique off-the-beaten-path narratives, inducing critical thinking and self reflection. The small size of the theater ensures an intimate experience with the actors on stage. A must see!

Every time I go to a Mad Horse show, I walk out feeling impressed. They choose plays that are thought provoking, deeply engaging, and unique. The talented actors are able to make it work each and every time. I'm so glad we have theater like this in South Portland, Maine and I try to make as many shows a season as I can!

We have counted on MHT for provocative and insightful productions. While the last play we saw was not our favorite, we acknowledge the artistry and skill of the show. The intimate space and pay-what-you-feel pricing make it a very personal and connected experience.

This was my first experience at a true theater. So my option should be limited. We had a great time watching Love Sucks, the interaction with the crowd was spot on. Scratch Baking Co is a charming bakery in South Portland, known for its artisanal breads, bagels, and pastries. The shop gained local fame for its award-winning bagels that have attracted a devoted following. Customers flock to the cozy shop to savor the pillowy, crispy-crusted bagels available in various flavors, all handcrafted with care.
I came into the shop knowing I wanted a salt bagel and to then find MAINE SEA SALT bagels was quite the delight. We arrived around 9:45am and they were sold out of their everything bagels (had plain, sesame, and sea salt left). So get there decently early if you want to make sure you get your pick of the litter. Cream cheeses were also available in the cooler but we got some at the grocery store to not break the bank

Great bagels! My favorite is the Asiago and Montreal Spice bagel. The line can be very long but usually moves fast. Rotating bagels and pastry’s. The scones are great as well. The coffee can be dairy heavy at times but overall a great spot for breakfast and bakery treats!

Bagels are absolutely uniquely flavored and chewy; some of, if not THE, best bagels I've ever had. We travel to Maine for summer vacation and Scratch Baking Co. bagels are our first stop, every time. We spend the rest of the year thinking about them. Their cinnamon rolls are made with pastry-type dough and are also amazing (pictured, half eaten). My son had to get back in line for seconds after falling in love with their pizza biscuits. Heads up - prepare to wait in line even on weekday mornings, which begins and wraps the corner before they even open. They do run out of items as the morning goes on.
Ranette C — Google review
The best fresh sourdough bagels around. Did you know that fresh sourdough isn't meant to be toasted? They're so deliciously perfect anyway that they don't need to be toasted. Crusty outside with soft insides. I moved away for a few years but it was one of my bestie's birthday so of course I had to make the drive back and surprise her with birthday morning bagels. I got there at 7:30am on a Wednesday and they had already sold out of both everything and sesame bagels. Ended up grabbing sea salt, plain, and cinnamon raisin. Sea salt will always have my heart. Their cream cheese is so delightfully whipped, don't forget to grab some from the cooler!
Diana L — Google review
Scratch Baking is my favorite breakfast spot in Portland! On my recent trip to the South Portland area I went here three out of five days I was in town. The bagels and pastries are top notch. The grab and go service is fantastic and even when there is a line the staff works hard to make everyone’s experience fast and smooth. Although the atmosphere is a bit different from your traditional breakfast spot, once you get the hang of it this will be your new go to stop.
Olivia S — Google review
I highly recommend this place! Coffee was very flavorful and smooth. Bagels were the perfect texture. I got the savory scone. I am a big fan of scones. This was one of, if not the best, scone I've had. The cherry on top were the employees. Everyone was so kind and friendly. It seems like everyone enjoys working there.
Stephanie — Google review
I was recommended to come here by a friend last year and when I tell you I’ve been thinking about it since I came back to visit… I really have. I’m a native New Yorker (so our bagels are famous) but they don’t compare! Probably the best bagels I’ve ever had, the staff is super friendly also. Get here early because they are always busy and rightfully so!
Lauren M — Google review
I was told the cinnamon rolls here were worth crawling through the snow for. Unfortunately they were sold out by 830am when we arrived. Scone was delicious. Coffee cake was good. Line was out the door when we arrived so clearly a popular place. Line moved fast. Nestled into a nice neighborhood. I would love to be able to walk to this bakery from my house!

The Maine Historical Society and the Wadsworth-Longfellow House offer a glimpse into the history of Maine. The house, once home to poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, is filled with estate furnishings and features a charming garden for visitors to explore. Meanwhile, the Maine Historical Society Museum showcases changing exhibitions and programs that span over five centuries of Maine life. With original exhibits featuring art, artifacts, and documents from their extensive collections, visitors can vividly experience Maine's rich history.
Been walking by this place just about every day for two months and every time I walk by, I say one of these days I've GOT to go in. History is cool and Maine History is Super Cool. I've heard nothing but good things about the Maine Historical Society and I'm a big fan of Longfellow's work, going next week and plan on doing a FULL review after I tour both locations.

The Maine Historical Society Museum in Portland offers a quirky and engaging experience—perfect for a quick escape from the rain. The current exhibits include Best Friends: Mainers and Their Pets, Maine’s Untold Vegetarian History, and Notorious: Maine Crime in the Public Eye, 1690–1940. While you won’t come away with a deep understanding of Portland’s history, the museum’s charm lies in its offbeat, thoughtfully curated displays. It’s a fun, low-key stop for anyone interested in Maine’s more unexpected historical threads. Overall, it’s a brief but enjoyable visit that highlights some of the state’s lesser-known stories.
Michael B — Google review
Had a wonderful conversation with an employee who stopped by the mural we were painting around the corner. He shared a lot of knowledge about the imagery we chose to feature in the piece. Little did we know Longfellow’s house was right around the corner! Thank you!!

Fun experience. My initial reaction was that the museum felt small and like it would test my patience as there was a lot of reading placards vs "stuff" to look at. Boy was I in for a pleasant surprise. The information was gripping. I found myself looking forward to the next story. I left thinking I learned an awful lot and had a nice base if I wanted to pursue further on my own. Tour of the Wadsworth Longfellow house was also a fun adventure. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly and encouraged a thoughtful experience. It was a little cramped with 10 participants but not horribly so. I definitely recommend.

We really enjoyed our visit. It is a gorgeous place. Kudos to the staff who put their hilarious spin on the "do not touch" signs! I pretty much went on a treasure hunt, looking for one in each room! Our guide was wonderful, too.
Natosha M — Google review
The two main Wadsworth-Longfellow houses (this and the house in Boston) are unusual in the sheer volume of original artifacts. What distinguishes this house is the rather professorial mien of the guides. Taken in total, it is easy to gain a deeper appreciation for America's most popular poet during the 19th century.
Jason M — Google review
We like to visit a historical society whenever we get a chance because we like learning about the community's history. There's a great food exhibit in the gallery that was really interesting and informative. You can even turn into a Portland Italian sandwich which is obviously for kids, but naturally I couldn't resist. You can also visit the Wadsworth-Longfellow House next door.

We wanted to visit a museum in Portland that is focused on local history and this was the only one that fit the bill. It was small but quite interesting. It gave us a glimpse of Maine’s past and present through two exhibitions. The first, called “Trade Banners and the Crafts That Built Maine” presented the various trade associations from the mid-1800s, whose collective output was vital to the state’s economy. The second, called “Spark! Maine ART Stories”, showcased the work of contemporary local artists and what Maine means to them. The museum has a nice gift shop offering coffee table books and souvenirs. We stayed for an hour.

The Maine Mall is the ultimate shopping destination in Maine, offering a wide range of over 100 chain stores, a food court, and even a bowling alley. As the largest shopping mall in the state and second-largest in northern New England, it provides a one-stop shopping experience for all your needs. From electronics to clothing, home goods to fitness gear, this retail center has it all.
It's a massive shopping mall in South Portland which has some good brands like Macy, Best Buy, H&M, Lululemon, Vans, Apple Store and Old Navy etc. I went there for the first time to buy some clothes. Prices are on the lower side with a lot of discounts for Christmas. It was crowded and people go out and shop for Christmas. I went to a few shops as I didn't have time and I want to explore other shops and the food court next time.

Pretty big mall in Portland Maine, had lots of fun stores, my personal favourite were hot topic and box lunch. Especially box lunch. But they had some cool places, only thing that made it less enjoyable was people trying to sell me things walking the halls. I understand you have to try to sell your product, however baiting me to buy your product or attempting to use products on me then get me to pay for them was kind of annoying. However it is what it is. They also have an arcade inside as well. I definitely will visit again if I’m in the area

The Maine Mall is a great one-stop shopping destination in South Portland. It’s clean, well-maintained, and has a good mix of stores from big national brands like Macy’s and Apple to smaller local shops. There’s plenty of parking and the layout makes it easy to get around. The food court has lots of options, and there are several good restaurants nearby if you want to grab a full meal. It’s also a nice place to walk around during the colder months since it’s spacious and bright inside. Overall, a reliable and convenient place to shop, browse, or just kill some time on a rainy Maine day!

We stop into The Maine Mall pretty regularly — sometimes for work errands, sometimes to grab food in between jobs, and occasionally just to walk around and reset during a long day. It’s clean, convenient, and has a good mix of stores for whatever we need. We especially love the food court — it’s quick, has plenty of variety, and gives our crew a chance to sit down, recharge, and keep moving. It’s one of the few places where we can knock out a few things at once, whether it’s grabbing supplies or picking up something last-minute. It’s a solid local spot that makes our busy days a little easier. — S.B. Taylor Transport

I love this beach. Even when there is alot of people there is still enough room for every one. The only reason this isn't a 5 for me is because the beach is open until 9 but the bathroom is closed the min the lifeguard leaves. This isn't ideal for when we have kids. If they don't want to leave the bathrooms open then maybe a port a poty would be nice. Instead of us having to leave completely

When in Portland, a must-do activity is the Lucky Catch Cruises. Embark on an exciting journey in Casco Bay and witness firsthand how lobstermen catch your dinner. The experience includes setting and pulling up a lobster trap, as well as learning about the area's history from the captain. Onboard experts like Greg and Caroline provide insights into lobster fishing while allowing guests to participate in various activities, including holding a live lobster.
Our tour was absolutely fantastic! The guide was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing not only the ins and outs of lobstering but also fascinating insights into the history of Maine and the various islands we passed along the way. The crew made sure everyone felt included and had a chance to participate in each activity, which made the experience even more special. I’ll definitely be recommending this to family and friends visiting Maine! 🦞

This is our first time to visit Main, so of course we wanted to experience catching lobster! We signed up with Lucky Catch, but 2 people took our spot on the boat and it left without us. That evening the captain called us and explained the mix up and offered us a lobster outing the next day and refunded our expense. I was very happy with the customer service. So we went the next day and had so much fun! We learned about lobsters, some history of the area and participated in setting and hauling in the traps. Our cruise didn't catch any lobsters of size, but they did have them available at a special boat price and deal with Portland Lobster Company to cook them for us. Don't miss this experience! Thank you Captain Peter and Suzanne!!!!

This was an absolutely fantastic tour! We loved every minute of it and learned so much about lobsters — from their life cycle and habits to how they’re caught. It was such a hands-on experience getting to bait the traps, toss them into the water, and then see what came up! The tour guides were incredibly knowledgeable and engaging — one of them was even a former teacher, and you could tell by how well they explained everything and made it fun for everyone. At the end of the tour, we were able to buy lobsters we caught and then carry them to a local restaurant that steamed them and provided side dishes for a small fee. They were delicious! Highly recommend this tour for anyone looking for a fun, educational, and truly authentic coastal experience!

HIGHLY recommend booking their lobster cruise! It was the highlight of our entire trip out to Maine! We learned so much about the lobstering process and got to be part of all of it! Plus, we were able to buy lobsters off the boat and take them to a local restaurant where they cooked them for us!

We had a phenomenal experience, catching lobsters, crabs, & a baby sculpin. Learned so much about the catching & release process. We were extremely lucky to have seen seals 🦭 & sea birds as well. Our guides were knowledgeable about the forts we passed as well. We got hands on experience with baiting, releasing crates & banding their claws.

This was by far my groups favorite thing we did on our trip. The weather was rainy but we still had so much fun. We walked away with knowledge of lobsters, a huge smile on our faces and soaking wet shoes. We had so much fun. The staff is amazing and make the experience what it is. We got to help bait traps, push traps back in the water, band lobsters and hold them. What a fun experience. We highly recommend this to anyone, rain or shine!!

We had a great time on our lobstering excursion with Lucky Catch Cruises. Captain Brian and Greg were very knowledgeable on the geography and wildlife in the area. They also were very friendly and professional. We got pull traps up, bait traps, and hold live lobsters. The hands on learning experience was memorable. On the way to the traps we saw light houses and seals. The staff made sure everyone on the boat was included in the excursion without pressuring anyone. I highly recommend joining Lucky Catch Cruises for a trip on the water if you are in Portland.

Lucky Catch Lobstering Cruise was an amazing experience! This was our first time in Maine. When you think of Maine, you also think LOBSTER! So after some research we found this. We had my grandmother who is in her 70s and two small children, and everyone had a blast! The captain and guide were very friendly, informative, and interactive. We felt safe the entire time, caught some lobster, saw all the sights, and had learned a lot about lobsters and other sea life. It was 10/10 experience and recommend!

There’s something magical about Portland’s Commercial Street and Wharf Street at night. The cobblestone paths, bathed in the warm glow of string lights, make you feel like you’ve stepped into another era. Music drifts softly from tucked-away cafes, mingling with the scent of fresh espresso and the occasional note of cannabis from quirky little spots like Higher Grounds. It’s the kind of place where you wander without a plan—pausing for creamy gelato, lingering over a glass of wine, or settling into a corner to watch the world pass by. The brick buildings hold the city’s maritime history, the flowers spill color over wrought-iron railings, and every bend reveals a cozy nook. Commercial Street and Wharf Street aren’t just places—they’re a vibe. A little romantic, a little bohemian, and absolutely perfect for a night of slow strolling, easy conversation, and making memories you’ll want to relive again and again.

Plenty of options for eating and souvenir shopping. We were expecting a more scenic experience of an actual port .. our bad on that. Basically it's walking up the street and down the street. So we were a little disappointed.

A great area to explore, shop, dine, enjoy with family and friends. Right across from the harbor, views are gorgeous. The alleyway behind commercial street is lined with great little spots to eat or grab a drink.

The Eastern Promenade in Portland is a waterfront park and promenade designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, offering stunning views of Casco Bay. This 68-acre Munjoy Hill park features a 2-mile paved trail that connects to other scenic trails. It includes playgrounds, sports fields, picnic areas, and off-leash dog locales. The area is known for its accessibility and as a hub of activity in the city center.

A great spot to walk around while enjoying views from the bay, and it’s very dog friendly which is a big bonus. There are often times food trucks parked, with a good selection of cuisines. There’s basketball courts and a playground for kids, truly something for everyone.

I love seeing the cruises parked nearby as i walk by and jog to get some fresh air! Theres never any trash but there is a little bit of a pothole problem and cracks in some locations but it feels rustic.

This place is so beautiful. There are a lot of benches and also children playground and tennis courts. It's located in nicer part of Portland. Sitting on the grass and looking at the sea with friends, family or even alone would be relaxing. This place is clean, scenic and lively. I would come back here again.

Great place, always draws a big crowd. Even today when the wind was biting cold. One can just imagine the history that has played at this location over the decades past. A fort, a lighthouse, several islands, an old bean factory all visible. Not mention the awe of the ocean. I’m going to keep this review going with repeat visits in the future.

The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad, located in Portland, offers a unique and charming coastal train ride with stunning ocean views. The museum features a collection of restored steam and diesel locomotives that once operated on the two-foot gauge railway across the state. Visitors can enjoy informative commentary from docents while taking in the historical significance of this unusual railway system.
We had a delightful family outing at the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad and Museum last Sunday with my niece, her husband, and their three young children. Our experience started well at the gift shop, which offered a fun selection of souvenirs and drinks perfect for our upcoming ride (though perhaps the term "museum" is a bit generous, as it seemed limited to a single case of artifacts). The train conductor was absolutely charming, fully embracing an "old-timey" vibe that added to the fun for everyone. The ride itself is perfectly suited for little ones – just long enough to hold their attention, but not so long that they get restless. While the kids loved taking in the views of the beautiful Maine coastline from the windows, the adults truly appreciated the historical insights and information shared over the loudspeaker. The halfway stop was a pleasant bonus, allowing us all to stretch our legs and enjoy seeing boats out on the ocean. We wholeheartedly recommend the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad and Museum for anyone seeking a unique and enjoyable experience, especially if you're traveling with small children. It's a charming step back in time along the Maine coast!

Unique ride on one of the few remaining narrow Guage railroads! The ride takes about 45 minutes with narration about local spots you are passing, and the history of the narrow Guage railroad! It was a good time and we bought tickets at the station for our ride 10 minutes later.

An excellent trip on this railroad! Easy to book online in advance ( or you can book in the shop on the day ) very close to the cruise terminal. You can chose to sit in first class or standard. Both are lovely! Great views! Try and sit on the right side of the train for gorgeous bay views. If you buy first class online, head into the shop for your drink and snack. We had a whoopie cake, delicious! A short ride along the bay, beautiful views. Would be great for any train loving kids or big kids! A visit takes about an hour.
Lois C — Google review
It's short but fun for cruise boaters who haven't got the stamina for long walks. You get to see the shore line and hear the history of the trains. Plus the staff were super helpful and accommodating for mobility challenged people.
Mary S — Google review
Round trip, it's a 40 minute ride. The cost is fairly inexpensive. Check out their website. Can add snacks and water for pretty cheap. Restrooms here. Along with a gift shop and snacks. My only reason for four stars is it's just so short. But my kids enjoyed it.
Slim S — Google review
We wanted to tour the area and see the train, perhaps go for a ride, yet we could not find nearby parking. Found what I first thought was an open space but it was for taxis only. The cruise terminal was very busy with people everywhere. Wife is mobility challenged so no way we could park blocks away and then walk back to it. Looked like a fun excursion and maybe on another trip to the area we can revisit.

Lovely little place! Staff is always super friendly and there is enough to do for a few hours with kids of all ages. If you’re going to go more than a couple times a year, I highly recommend the membership! 👶🏼: It’s great for all ages but babies and toddlers specifically will love the second floor. There is a soft play area & on the third floor, a light room and water play area! 🅿️: is a PITA. If you get there early enough or go on a not busy day, it’s fine BUT most days, the parking lot is pretty full in front. However, there is plenty of parking behind/close by. Parking is extra $$ though. I think it’s like $2/hr or something. It’s way easier with the Passport app. They will ticket you if you don’t pay! 🛝: There is a nice little outdoor playground with benches, a sand pit, slides, and climbing structure.
Erica V — Google review
This children’s museum offers a ray of make believe, fun crafts and ways to get energy out. They have area for kids under the age of 8 and an area the lighthouse which is for 2yo and younger (meant for non crawlers). They have a small aquarium and huge water table area. Great place to go to in the winter. Downfalls, kids get soaked at the water table area even with apron on. Bring a change of clothes. The space is very tight so when busy no strollers can fit and you are on top of one another. Wish there was more space as it’s defiantly tight inside. Another downfall is you must pay to park. Communal area to put jackets and bags but no lockers. Very easy to steal belongings. Also no food or drink allowed so makes it difficult for the bottle kiddos.

Great place to bring your young ones to enjoy many different areas of play. Outside play area with sand, jungle gym, and music. Inside so much to explore! Water play area, interactive learning, and theater. They are all about STEM! And it is amazing! Check out their website for more information. They have an elevator and stairs. They have picnic tables outside near the outdoor play area. Many benches to sit on for parents to relax as they watch their children. Restrooms on each floor.

Really love the top floor where kids can interact with different elements, air, light, and water. The light exhibit is especially fun and includes a giant camera obscura. The staff in the fish area are really friendly and knowledgeable. They're always engage my kids in conversations about fish and the environment. We've seen shows there too and the staff are very patient and accommodating of my kids, who are in constant motion. They introduced a gift shop this year and that has been challenging. It's unavoidable on the way out and has ruined otherwise lovely visits

If you’ve got the money, this place will keep your kid busy for literally HOURS. We took our 1 year old and he loved the light play, water play, air play, and the fish tanks. It was too expensive for us to afford, but we happened to have a free ticket.

An incredible experience. Made for hands on learning and imaginative play! My child could have stayed there all day and never got bored because there were so many activities and opportunities to be creative. A great place for multi aged children too. The baby area was conveniently next to the imaginative play area for toddlers and kids. Be sure to check out the arts and crafts section too!

Brought our grandchildren here on a lazy Sunday. Thinking we were going to spend $20 per person (which would have been well worth it) we only spent $4. It was "Dollar Day". The museum provided some snacks and juice for the kids. They had a story reading in a movie theater setting with a big screen. The kids loved it!!. After the reading they went to town just playing and interacting with other children. They especially liked the water activities, dress play, the light room, and hours of entertainment with each floor. Great place for safe and family fun!!
Jennifer F — Google review
We had a great time with our 2 and 4 year old, spending about 2 hours at the museum. Plenty of activities for the kids. They especially liked the dress up activities like fireman and doctor. The water play was super engaging and fun as well! We ended watching a theater show about making chowder. They had each kid in the audience participate in making the chowder. Thank you for the great experience!

Peaks Island, located in Casco Bay, offers a relaxed and charming atmosphere with various activities to enjoy. The 720-acre island is home to a small population of around 1,000 residents, which swells to 3,000 during the summer months. Visitors can take a short 15-minute ferry ride from Portland to reach the island. Once there, they can explore the area by renting bikes or kayaks and visit museums and historic sites.
Fun place for a few hours adventure. We took the ferry over and were able to rent a golf cart to drive around the island twice in 2 hour rental. (Try to book ahead) Lots of options for food. Can also rent bikes to get around island. To save money there is a grocery store to buy food and drinks for cheaper than restaurants.

Excellent day Trip. My husband and I escaped Southern NH for the weekend and made our way to Peaks Island ( sept 12 ) it was a gorgeous day so let me tell you it was still very busy even after the summer season wind down. The island is beautiful clean and offers a few shops some Trails a few restaurants and overall a nice day out. The ferry is $14 per adult ( round Trip) we rented a golf cart on the island to scoot us around.

To get to Peak Island, go to Casco Bay Pier. There you will buy your tickets to and back. It's about $7.50 for an adult round trip. Senior citizens are free. It's about a 15-minute ferry. The ferry is pretty smooth rides. Once you arrive at Peak Island. I would recommend renting a bicycle to bike the island. The island is not that big. Pretty do it in an hour. Go to this place called Brad's Recycle Bike Shop. It's about 2 bucks for 1 to 2 hours rental. It's well worth it. Right now, he doesn't have credit card payments. So we filled out the form and dropped the money. It's an honor system. Don't rent a golf cart. 100 bucks for 2 hrs. I feel that riding a bicycle, you get to enjoy it more. The east side of the island is much better with the ocean view. Definitely bring sunblock, water, and some snacks. The public bathroom is next Brad Recycle Bike shop. Peak Island is worth a day trip.

The ferry ride was exhilarating and I was blessed to catch it during sunset on the way back. Small little island easy to explore in an hour or so depending on whether you rent a golf cart or choose to walk. My first time touching the waters of the Atlantic.

The Portland Farmers' Market is a seasonal market located at Monument Square, offering a variety of locally grown fruits, vegetables, and plants from Maine. While technically open year-round, most vendors are present from April to Thanksgiving. The market provides an opportunity for visitors to experience the local seasonal offerings amidst the urban setting of downtown Portland. This charming city on the coast of Maine boasts stunning ocean views, historic architecture, and a vibrant culture with a rich history dating back to the 17th century.
I go here anytime I can convince myself to wake up before 2pm on a Saturday. You get to know the vendors. There's always music and tons of dogs. I went today even though I didn't want to buy anything, just because it's so lovely. Beautiful fruits and veggies, but also meats, dairy, mushrooms, flowers, bread, crafts. One of my favorite Portland thingies!

Island Dog Brewing is a perfect spot to quench your thirst with a cold beer on a hot summer day. It offers a fantastic variety of beers, including unique options like the Unit 15 saison with delightful citrus hints and the St. Hubbins gose featuring plum flavors. The brewery is also dog-friendly both indoors and outdoors, making it an ideal place to relax with your furry friend.
I tried 16 breweries this weekend, in and around Portland. This was the best. If you aren't a fan of IPAs... come here. The saison, Unit 15, had delicious hints of citris. I'm taking home a growler to RI. The best saison ever. The St. Hubbins gose, (i still don't know what a gose is) was the best 'gosh' ive had all weekend with Plum flavors. Don't even get me started on the Pineapple. Do i need to explain that?! The 3 buoy Brown stout was a light stout. Not my favorite go-to if you're craving a thick stout. But if you are looking for that 'stout' flavor without the heaviness, this is your go-to!! A beer called blue... i am taking home. Its a wheat, purplish beer. Sweet. Crisp. Smells like blueberries. When I walk out liking five beers, this is a must try. Order some Otto pizza while you are here. They deliver!

I always stayed away from temples of worship and cemeteries but have been drawn to the beauty and peace while traveling. I was amazed to see people just hanging out and exercising in the cemetery. There are a lot of old head stones that are eligible and decaying. If you're in the South Portland area during Memorial Day or Veterans Day visit Calvary Cemetery. Family are buried here at Calvary cemetery in South Portland and I have to tell you visiting the cemetery today 5–24–24 disgusting and disrespectful. This looks like a hayfield we honor veterans in the deceased on Memorial Day like this. I don’t care if they’re shorthanded or not find the resources to make this cemetery look proper. This cemetery has never looked so bad since Danny Nee has left the cemetery, I have spoken to over 15 people today at this cemetery that feel the same way that I do. This is absolutely a disaster in the cemetery. Both new and old Calvary whoever takes care of this cemetery should absolutely be ashamed of the way that the cemetery looks and there are resources out there if you want to take advantage of them there is the county jail. There is the Maine state prison in Windham that offer prisoners work release and bring a supervisor out to watch them put a weed whacker in their hand or mower this is absolutely, horrendously disrespectful and awful to look at the Portland diocese should be absolutely ashamed of the way that this cemetery looks, I see family of loved ones not bringing only flowers to their loved ones grave but bringing a weed whacker to make it look presentable in honor them. This is absolutely unexpected acceptable when you are charging $5000 or more for a lot to bury a loved one you should have the resources to take care of it. You should be ashamed of yourself.

My entire family are buried at Calvary. I put flowers in the ground every year at my parent's headstone and baskets with evergreens at Christmas for my parents and grandparents, G Grandparents and GG grandparents. Yesterday, I planted Impatients at my parents and potted Pogonias at my GG and G grandfather's monument. The winter baskets were still at the monuments. In the past, cemetery personnel removed them by May 1st. I was never back in the area in time to remove them myself by May 1st as I have been spending the winter seasons in Florida since 1998. Today, I stopped by to water the plants again as I was in the area. The glass really needs to be mowed. One of the nearby sources of water isn't working. Why? It didn't work last year either! I understand that the cemetery is looking for help. I sure hope they are able to find and hire help because the overall condition of the cemetery is appalling. I visit Ocean View in Wells, Riverside Cemetery in CE, and Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco. These cemeteries are ALWAYS well maintained and in pristine condition. The condition at old Calvary is shameful and sad! I was forced to give this review 1 Star in order to Post this comment. Calvery does not deserve even 1 Star.

I travel for work and walking through old cemetery's is something I enjoy. I believe this is probably one of the most fascinating cemetery's I've had the pleasure to walk through. And thank you to the maintenance guy, I'm sorry I didn't get his name but he gave me a little history of the cemetery and some places to check out thank you again.

Live music venue
Thompson's Point is a versatile riverside venue that offers a blend of nature and culture. It features an open-air entertainment space on the Fore River, surrounded by three acres of picnic-ready lawn. During summer, it collaborates with the State Theatre of Portland to host major concerts and Makers Market events, while in winter, it transforms into an ice skating rink. The venue also hosts festivals and provides a variety of concessions including food trucks.
One of my most favorite places to see a show in all the land! The venue appeals to all the senses! Glorious music for the ears to fill your soul; beautiful surroundings, lights and sunsets for the eyes; all the coastal smells; tasty food truck awesomeness for your mouth and sweet outdoor air on your skin.

I couldn't have enjoyed this place more! Staff is super friendly, there's plenty of space for everyone! I'd like the interesting setup of general admission "floor" then an area to put down chairs and blankets and then another standing area. Tons of tasty food trucks, lots of beverages. And oh yeah, spectacular sunsets right behind you!
Ben G — Google review
The venue is very pretty and was clean and fun. Parking was pricey but if you can walk a good distance there are spots in the neighborhood. The drinks are ridiculously overpriced though.

Unique venue with major local vibes, food trucks, decent folks, and splendid views in walking distance from comfortable lodging options. Check out the Thursday/Friday sunset events that are free to the public or pop in for a concert. P.S. Thank you, Flaming Lips!

Always such a great experience at Thompson's point! I've been there a couple times and it was easy to find, everyone is always so helpful. Parking is quite a bit pricey at the venue. So I've heard that there are some spots you can park for a lot cheaper elsewhere, the MD eyecare medical group was about 20$ to park vs 60$ cash only at Thompson's at least for the flaming lips show, the King Gizz show I believe was cheaper for parking. Definitely recommend checking alternate parking otherwise, the venue is amazing, the vendors are always incredible! The lemonade is perfect 😻 it was such an uplifting scent and delicious!

Poutinefest was good this year. Need better signage for the bathrooms and for available beverages at the bar. The event space itself is great and a great location.

Great venue! Definitely recommend a concert at this spot! Food trucks all along the perimeter and plenty of space. Get ready for a bit of a battle to leave in your car from the parking lots
Nicholas D — Google review
My favorite outdoor concert venue by far. I love that you are allowed to bring in a low sitting chair &/or blanket. There are designated areas for standing & sitting with ample re-filling stations for water bottles. Always a good vibe & always feel safe. They always have excellent choices for food trucks, but you don't have to break the bank because you can bring your own food if you want. I don't drink, but they also have a huge section to purchase drinks as well. They have the options for parking on location, but there are areas (if you don't mind walking a bit) that are free. Plus the tickets for the shows are typically very reasonable if bought early. All good things in my opinion. 🩷

The Casco Bay Ferry to Peak’s Island was a delightful experience. We went during the off-peak so we were able to drive on board with no issues. The car ferry in April holds 20 cars so it is necessary to be mindful of the time when trying to make this trek. The staff are super courteous and have treats available for your furry friends. If you decide to park your car, everyone including pets with need a ticket. Driving all human passengers in the car will need a ticket.

Nature enthusiasts may even catch sight of nesting Peregrine falcons under the bridge.
Beautiful views of Casco Bay and the ocean. Interesting historical information about the park and Thomas Knight, as well as a cobblestone street with an old railroad track. The Casco Bay Bridge passes above.

Fewest random needles of any greater-Portland park! Good views, and it’s fun to get an up-close look at the ships coming through the drawbridge. The park is at its best when the floating dock is attached to the pier, which should hopefully be back in 2026.

Spring Point Shoreway is a picturesque mile-long waterfront stroll that takes you through the Southern Maine Community College campus, past historic Fort Preble, and by the charming Spring Point Ledge Light. The shoreway also leads to Willard Beach, a small yet popular public beach. This serene spot offers scenic views of sandy beaches and is frequented by cyclists and joggers seeking a peaceful escape from city life. Limited parking is available, but visitors can find treasures along this shoreline.
There is limited parking here but if you wander over from the Fort Preble or Willard Beach area you can find some good treasures on this small shoreline. I loved it! There are bathrooms and be respectful because the college has functions here as well from time to time and it can get crowded. Plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the views.

Duckfat is a charming European-style sandwich shop and cafe located in the Old Port. The eatery is renowned for its specialty duck-fat Belgian fries and delectable milkshakes. The hand-cut fries are fried to perfection in duck fat, creating a delightful greasy indulgence that has become the restaurant's signature dish.
This place is the talk of the town. Especially for people who are visiting Portland for a few days or so, you must visit this place. They don't take reservations. The food here hits the sweet spot for me. One of the best fries I have had. And I would recommend getting their flight of sauces along with the fries. Even the ketchup they serve with it is elevated with truffle oil. We ordered a cream of tomato soup, a wild blueberry milkshake and a brisket sandwich as well. Absolutely loved the soup. The milkshake was thick but felt very light on the stomach. And the sandwich was decent. It's a small cozy place with indoor and outdoor dining. The staff here is very friendly, polite and you will always see them smiling.
Rohit W — Google review
About five years ago, we visited Duckfat for the first time. To be honest, I don’t quite remember which sandwiches we ate or which beers we drank. What we do remember, though, are the fries. The Belgian-style fries were magical—delectable, crunchy, and unforgettable. We even brought home T-shirts and told anyone who would listen about this fantastic spot in Portland, insisting they had to try the fries. Fast forward to today. This time, my memory is much clearer about the food we ate, the service we received, and the exact beers we enjoyed. And then there were the fries. They weren’t bad—worse, they were ordinary. No different from fries you’d get at any place serving burgers. They were common, underwhelming, and about as far from crunchy as could be. We weren’t angry, and they certainly weren’t terrible, but they also weren’t what we had come to expect based on our first visit. The service was still excellent, and the food and beer were great. But the fries—the item they’re so proud of—felt like just a shadow of their former glory.
Carlos M — Google review
Fantastic food at Duckfat. Even with a large group, they seated us after about a 30-minute wait, and the service was warm and friendly. I started with the Roots, Barks, & Sticks drink — it’s a craft root beer, but honestly, I wasn’t a fan. It tasted pretty weak, so if you’re expecting a bold root beer, this isn’t it. I got the Oaxacan-style House Smoked Brisket sandwich and really enjoyed it. It’s a unique mix of flavors, and adding avocado made it taste even fresher. The Belgian frites with the flight of five sauces are a must — my favorites were the Thai chili mayo and garlic aioli sauces. I also got the mocha milkshake. TIP: ask for a side of the cookies from the cookies & cream shake to mix in. It takes it from an 8 to a 10. I also tried the cookies and cream, salted caramel, and blueberry buttermilk milkshakes — all were delicious, but the mocha and cookies and cream were my favorites. I tried the donut holes and they were insanely good!

Outstanding restaurant that’s worth waiting for. We waited an hour in the middle of the afternoon but it was worth every moment. Everything is phenomenal! We had the frites 🍟 with sauce flight, lobster roll, brisket, grilled cheese sandwiches. 🦞 Also, had the tomato soup, Caesar, and blueberry and coffee milkshakes. 🍨 They also have a modest sized, but eclectic and delicious beer menu. 🍺 Our server was also fantastic! I wish I remembered her name, but everybody seemed super friendly. Wonderful, outdoor dining area, too Not cheap but can’t wait to go back!

PSA: THEY DO NOT DO TAKE OUT. They have another outlet not too far away, be sure to go there if you intend to do takeout. Outstanding poutine, amazing vanilla milkshake with REAL vanilla. Super flavourful and aromatic. Highly recommended

Cozy little place. Place was slammed but the staff were amazingly friendly. Poutine and cubano were melt in your mouth. Washed down with a shake that wasn’t heavy but perfectly tasty. Don’t pass this place up if you’ve got the chance.
Christopher T — Google review
Everything we had was so delightful. The server was engaging and welcoming. The birch beer is tasty and do not leave without trying a milkshake. We started off with the fries, which is our one regret about our dining experience, we only got a small, should have ordered a large. The Thai chili dipping sauce was good, little bit of a kick. The fries are so crispy and delicious on their own you dont need a dipping sauce, but it's just another way they find to add flavor in to the meal. My husband had a Caesar salad, which again, who knew a salad could have that much flavor. I had the Cubano sandwich and it had a depth a flavor that I cannot adequately put into words. We rounded out our late lunch date with milkshakes! Zero complaints, everything was full of flavor, and each dish was perfection.

Bring in the DUCK! Duckfat is awesome! 😋 🍟 🦆 our friends took us here on our way north because they remembered it being so delicious and it didn’t disappoint! A recent review mentions some fried being soggy… I have to admit some of our batch was… and I’m not sure if that’s intended or not and what to expect from “Belgian Style Fries” 😅 the only way I can associate it and relate is if you ever had boardwalk fries down the shore, where they par cook and fry the potatoes and sometimes the oils just cold enough it doesn’t crisp up but not too old were the grease seeps in… it’s like that. But either way we devoured our basket and weren’t just hungry! They were great! 🤤 and well seasoned! (Some crispy too so maybe we were hustling unlucky; or maybe that’s how it’s served!) we had a nice server who was attentive and the food runner was great too. We really appreciated their attentiveness to a food allergy we had in our group. You don’t always see that level of seriousness which we truly appreciated! Sauces were great! We also enjoyed some duck 🤤 which was cooked to perfection. I had a sandwich with the tomatillo and it blew me away. For my first time in Portland I’m glad we waited to try this place. Our friends knew their stuff and they too were happy it was good as they remember! We sat outside which was also nice. You could tell they really cared about their service and their place. I recommend trying the old style root beer! Oh and the donut holes! 🤤 you can’t miss those! Absolutely divine! Perfectly fried outside with the hot steaming pillowy inside! 10/10. Coffee was great too! I love they also are openly inclusive! There’s love and food for everyone! You won’t be disappointed if you go to Duckfat and it’s worth the wait!

Seafood restaurant
Eventide Oyster Co. is a bustling seafood joint in Portland, Maine, known for its raw bar, lobster rolls, and creative New England dishes. Co-owned by Andrew Taylor, Arlin Smith, and Mike Wiley, this restaurant has made a significant impact on the local dining scene since its opening in 2012. The establishment pays homage to traditional American oyster bars with a selection of 14 varieties available on the half-shell.
The food was excellent. Great quality ingredients and flavors were very enjoyable. Restaurant was small with not a lot of seating. Wife and I got sat at the window on a make shift bar top. No big deal but would have been a nicer experience at a regular table. My wife really enjoyed her oysters and the Halibut Crudo was rockin'. I enjoyed the Crudo more than the bao bun lobster roll.
Khek D — Google review
I ordered takeout, so I only experienced front of house service from the hostess. The restaurant was very busy, but my online order was ready at the time it said it would be. I was really impressed with how tasty everything was even after the short 5 minute drive back to my hotel. My only complaint was how small the roll was, however, the fish sandwich was incredible. I would definitely recommend anyone to go here.
Joshua K — Google review
If you’re a fan of fresh seafood and relaxed coastal vibes, this restaurant is an absolute must-visit. The oyster selection alone is worth the trip—freshly shucked and beautifully presented. Each one tastes like a clean, briny kiss of the ocean. But the true standout is their brown butter lobster roll, which might just be the best I’ve ever had. The atmosphere is equally inviting, with both indoor and outdoor seating that cater to any mood—cozy and intimate inside, breezy and low key on the patio. Their beer selection is also impressive, with local brews on draft and a thoughtful list of bottled options. Whether you’re coming for a casual lunch or a leisurely dinner, this spot delivers a flawless seafood experience every time.

I visit Eventide every time I come to Portland to visit family. Truly, the brown butter lobster roll is the best lobster roll I've ever had and surprisingly, it's at a great price. The amount of meat on the roll is substantial and honestly it ruins my other lobster roll experiences elsewhere because I always compare it to this one. It's that good. I just wish it was a little larger! The restaurant itself is on the small side compared to what I'm used to in Dallas, but is comparable to other restaurants in Portland for sure. The decor is coastal chic, service is always outstanding, and it keeps me coming back. My first visit was during Covid and we sat outside in the dead of winter but they went to great lengths to create a warm and cozy dining experience - so here I am, visiting for the 3rd time. I've also had the oysters and some cocktails, but I just keep going back to the lobster roll. It's a must.

Decided to enjoy lunch here after reading Amanda Wanders blog about best lobster rolls in Portland, Maine. Party of 2, we arrived right before there was a wait for lunch 11:25. Cody our server was attentive, knowledgeable and efficient. We ordered 1 doz. oysters which Cody selected as he said, “working up the coast of Maine”. Loved the shaved horseradish recommendation along with mignonette which was delicious. I’m from MD and horseradish ice is never an option. An upgrade from cocktail sauce for sure. Lobster roll is was small in size. Totally fine with that and delicious. I asked Cody what he liked and the Bigeye Tuna Crudo is what he suggested. Excellent! To compliment the meal I enjoyed a Bloody Mary. Homemade mix which was fresh and tasty. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a casual, lively, & fun place that has great food & service.

The scallop waffle was amazing - we considered going back just for this during our trip! Very cool experience waiting at the bar in front of the oysters. They helped us distinguish the differences between oysters and their flavors. The brown butter lobster roll was my favorite one we had in Portland, I just wished it was a little bigger. Overall, would definitely recommend.

The food is mouth watering. Please get the brown butter lobster roll you won’t regret it! The clam chowder was amazing and unlike any other I’ve had. Fort Williams Park, situated in Cape Elizabeth just off Route 77, is a town-operated state park offering free access with some paid parking. The park features stunning views of the rocky shoreline and the iconic Portland Head Light. Visitors can explore the remnants of the late-19th-century artillery base, including WWII bunkers and gun emplacements. The park also provides ample picnic areas and panoramic vistas.
My friends and I were so excited to see some Maine things and because of the weather it was pretty impossible to happen. We actually ended up calling a lift and her driver took us to this place as a surprise and we were so excited that we were able to see this place. It was so beautiful and definitely a good place to go to if you want to see some real Maine nature. I would definitely say check this place. It'll take lots of pictures. You can do family photos here. You can do visiting photos here. There's so much to do in this big part. It is huge! They did also have a ice cream place but it was closed probably because it was like 40° and then they also had a lobster roll place. But we didn't go check that out. But at least there is some spots there that you can have snacks and lunch.

This was my first time visiting this park and Portland Head Light! Had a great time walking around and photographing the lighthouse through the smoke and fog on a beautiful 80° morning. Also enjoyed a great Caprese Sandwich and a Maine Blueberry Soda from the Bite Into Maine Food Cart! I was very okay with the $6 parking fee for the minimum 2 hours. Downtown parking was $20 more for the same two hours or $25 for all day parking where available.

Wonderful spot to spend some time, go for a walk, admire the ocean views, and of course visit Portland Head Light. The park is pretty big and I wish we had time to explore more of it, especially the coastal cliff walk and the fort itself. Portland Head Light is a must-see though. Minus one star for forcing everyone out of the park before sunset was over, it was literally one of the most incredible sunsets we've seen and the ranger kicked everyone out before we could really enjoy it and see how the light was hitting the lighthouse. Be careful because the ranger let people linger a little bit but then he really started confronting people.

We came to this park specifically to see the lighthouse, but we parked in a lot near an old mansion and Fort, and walked around. The views were beautiful and it was a nice walk. We then drove up to the parking lot, close to the lighthouse and enjoyed walking around and getting as many different angles of pictures as we could. You do have to pay for parking, but it is not pricey. This is definitely a must visit if you are in the Portland area.

Very well maintained park in Cape Elizabeth, ME with a beautiful rocky coastline and an iconic Maine lighthouse. The views are outstanding. The city park is fairly large, beautifully landscaped and maintained by the town of Cape Elizabeth. Be prepared to walk up and down hills (wear good walking shoes). The park gets very crowded on weekends and parking can be hard to find. There is a fee for parking that you need to pay at a kiosk. The park is dog friendly so bring fido! Be sure to bring water for your pup in the hot weather, and for yourself. Toilets consist of porta potties (ick) but at least they are there!

We visited on a Saturday afternoon in mid-June 2025. Finding parking was a little rough. There were a number of extra spots on grass and in the Fort William Parade Grounds field with sun and no shade. But if you wanted a decent spot closer to water or on more compact surface it was difficult to find. We did find a great spot up on hill by the public bathroom (porta johns). It was a great spot because there is a pavilion right up top that's great for picnicking. We started by visiting the Portland Head Light. We just walked down straight across the field. There is actually a great photo spot right before the steps as you walk down. We noticed a number of people stopped here to take a photo. Because you're so high up, there are no other people in your shot. The actual light house was nice. There is a small museum underneath it but there was a cost to go in. $2/ adult and $1/child. The sign specifically says NO TOWER TOURS, NO FOOD OR DRINK, NO RESTROOMS. We decided on the time that we had here that it wasn't worth it to pay to go in. There is also a small giftshop in an adjacent building. It was about the size of a large shed or small garage. It was also very crowded in and outside of there near the light house. As you walk further away there is less and less people which was nice. We decided to do the Cliff Walk towards the North Viewpoint because we wanted to also explore the abandoned bunker and Goddard Mansion. There are multiple stops heading north on the cliff walk that you can turn around and get a great photo of the headlight. Only issue we had was that it was mid-day and the sun lighting was harsh on the photos. Best to come earlier in the morning and later in the afternoon/evening. We hoped to also explore the Fort Williams Mine Casement but from up above trying to hike down, there was a ton of erosion and we were not sure if we went down, we could get back up. We knew there was possibly another entrance below but to get there from the rocks would've taken a significant portion of our limited time at the park. So we went as far as we could safely and decided to turn around. There were a couple of small signs that pointed out the structure. If you weren't specifically looking for it, you'd easily miss it. We arrived at the Abandoned Fort William Bunker with maybe 2 other groups there. We did climb up on the right side and explored all the way around. The kids really enjoyed it and you can get some cool pictures on top of the bunker. The kids also did the dark tunnel underneath. They said it was very dark and mostly trash and some graffiti in there. We explored here for maybe 20 mins. Lastly we hiked to the Goddard Mansion. The lighting was perfect through the trees. We entered from the back side coming from the Abandoned Fort Williams Bunker. There are trails back here and it looked so cool with the light. We took a number of photos and most people didn't really care it looked like and hiked on the paved asphalt trail to the other side. The mansion interior is fenced off but it was still really cool. I think we timed it just right for photos here. Also there weren't very many people interested in it. Looks like most wanted to see the bunker and then headed back. Overall this was a great afternoon we spent at Fort Williams Park. There were many other things here that we wanted to explore and hike but we only had about 2 hrs. If we were in Portland again we would totally put this on the top of our list to return. However we came in mid-June. I would be a little scared of the crowds later in the summer like July.

An iconic Maine site and a must see when passing through Portland, ME. Portland Head light situated on the rocky Maine coast is stunning. Additionally, the park features open space, picnic areas and walking trails along the coast. The one downside of the visit was the large crowd and significant traffic. We went on a beautiful Saturday in October and so did many others. We had to slowly cruise the parking lots for 20 minutes before a parking spot opened up. The visit was worth this minor inconvenience, but if possible you should try to visit during less crowded times.

The Maine Military Museum & Learning Center, located in Peary Terrace, South Portland, is a modest yet impressive museum that showcases American wartime artifacts from the Revolutionary to Vietnam War. The museum offers an intimate look at cool wartime memorabilia such as uniforms, POW artifacts, and photos. Visitors can also hear firsthand accounts of active-duty veterans who generously share their experiences. The collection includes war-worn uniforms, aviator helmets, and patches that are kept in mint condition by dedicated curators.
A truly phenomenal experience at Maine Military Museum, you get to see up close of donated items that were once used by the now veterans. The owner is very nice and explains us around. They accept donations and great books available to purchase for great price. Thank you!

Excellent museum! Completely packed with history and amazing artifacts. They also have tables of various books and DVDs for sale at a low price. Lee is the owner and he did a fantastic job with setting up scenes with mannequins. A must visit. Lee is a great guy also. This museum deserves to have more visitors!

An amazing experience with 2 of my son's. Going to go back when my other son gets back in town. Lee was an awesome host and full of so much knowledge. I recommend this place to anyone who knew or knows someone that is in the military or is just a regular history buff. I promise you this place will not disappoint. They are open every day, except Mondays, from 11-5 and it is free. I suggest you go the earliest you can because there is a ton of information to digest, absolutely thankful to Mr. Lee for preserving history and making it available to others. Much appreciated and my family thanks you for your service. See you again real soon!!! ❤️🤗❤️🤗

We followed a very modest sign advertising a book sale and ended up at this museum. It was incredible with rooms and rooms of authentic and unusual items from the revolutionary war all the way up through the 2000s. The owner has a lot of interesting stories and was very pleasant and welcoming. It’s clear this museum is a passion project and he has put so much care and thought into his collection. So glad we stumbled upon this place. They also have tons of books, military patches and pins, hats, and movies for sale for a low price.

Wow. Plan for a lengthy visit. Very comprehensive. Covers all wars. Dedication POW exhibit. You will be impressed.
Orin R — Google review
You walk into the first room which looks like a banquet hall with the military items displayed on the wall. Then you realize there are more rooms, especially the main display room with oodles and oodles of cool stuff. The best experience is to hang with either Lee, the owner, or one of his friends as they will walk you around telling firsthand stories and stories of various exhibit donors. The collection of items is phenomenal, but being exposed to men with these stories makes this one of the best. If you can, go on a Saturday and you may get lucky to meet one of few remaining WWII vets visiting. He lives nearby and comes often. And he has items on display. Definitely the type of museum worth visiting multiple times.

Great museum well worth it! Tons of history. Guided tours are available.

I loved this place! If anyone is interested in History, this place is a must-seen considered! The veterans, who own the museum, were gentle and talkative about historical topics referring the US military history and US-Albania relationship. Thank you for your time. Visitors have been impressed by various performances, including 'We Will Rock You,' 'Guys and Dolls,' and 'Cabaret.' The venue is praised for its safety measures, with vaccine cards checked at the door and patrons masked throughout the performance.
Portland Players is an amazing local community theater in the heart of South Portland near Mill Creek. The shows they put on are top notch and feature some of the best local talent in music, dancing and acting!

Love this place , but the air conditioning was blowing at us with a Gail force. Went out front to ask if they could turn it down and was immediately told they needed to keep it cool for the actors on stage, which I get, but there has to be a way to make the experience enjoyable for everyone. Second time this has happened. I think you can do better. Sincerely...

What a great little theater. Staff is great and all the actors hit their marks. Can't wait to see what they do next. Kathryn Kellogg a regular has the skills to up the experience of any show she is in. From the Fosse hands you hardly ever see in a local production to tap dancing. She has an Austrian trained projection voice and a beautiful face equals a real stand out.

My first experience of The Portland Players theatre (and community theatre) was in 1986. The Players put on a memorable production of "Children of a Lesser God" (before the movie came out!) that has kept me coming back over the years.

My wife and I saw We Will Rock You on 8/13. We were both so impressed with the presentation!!! The performers and band were all top notch local talent! It was cool for us because we saw the Vegas presentation on our honeymoon in 2004, so it brought back a lot of memories. Thanks Portland Players. We can't wait to come back soon.

Fort Allen Park is a 10-acre urban park with a rich historical background, offering stunning water views of Casco Bay and Fort Gorges. Originally built as a fort during the Revolution in 1775, it now provides seating areas, a gazebo, and various historical monuments. Visitors can enjoy walking trails, picnics, and summer concerts at the bandstand.
A fantastic place to walk, picnic, fly a kite, and/or enjoy the bay. A lot of warm weekends have food trucks and this is the only dog friendly beach in the area. There's a mini train that you can ride on for a ticket fee. Plenty of parking and a view no matter where you are. Like history? Read all the plaques. Great info!

Nature & Parks
The Bug Light lighthouse is modeled after a Greek monument and boasts stunning harbor views. Adjacent to a picturesque park, it offers an ideal location to enjoy nature's beauty while watching yachts and boats pass by. Although currently non-operational, visitors can still walk around the lighthouse and learn about its history through the surrounding fence. Ample parking is available with several benches for relaxation and reflection.

Summit Adventures is an excellent destination for families with children. This amusement center offers a wide array of activities and entertainment suitable for kids. It provides a fantastic place to spend quality time together as a family, with attractions such as thrilling rides, engaging games, and challenging obstacle courses. Kids can immerse themselves in the excitement of this amusement center while parents can relax knowing their children are safe and having fun.
Note: they have moved to their new location in the old Chuck E. Cheese building. Our group went here yesterday (Sunday) for the first time. We had a larger group - about 10 people, all different ages. We all had a great time. The staff were super friendly, and the wait to get onto each attraction was minimal to none. Each activity provided a different thrill/experience. Even the toddlers in our group were on cloud nine. Probably my favorite attraction was the lazer tag. SO much fun for adults and children to do together. Also loved the bumper cars - worth noting that when you bump into each other, you don't get flung everywhere (which is SO awesome!!). A special thank you to the gentleman that saw our group and gave us extra tokens. He *may* have been the owner, we were not sure. We'd gone to Summit as something to remember a loved one that passed away nearly a year ago - he had always wanted to go there with his young children but never made it. We will be back for sure!

Hinckley Park is a dog-friendly park with separate areas for large and small dogs, providing a safe space for them to play and socialize. The park features ponds, footpaths, and bridges built by a local grandfather, adding sentimental value. It's also suitable for snowshoeing in the winter. The 1.3-mile loop around two ponds offers scenic views and opportunities for fishing.
Great trail walking area. Lots of wildlife around the ponds if you enjoy birding, this is a spot for you. Awesome for kids as they have an educational story path. Community gardens in the area.

Wonderful place to walk in the city i think it's a dog park but all dogs I saw were well behaved. 2 nice ponds there 1 is a kids pond for fishing and is stocked annually with brook trout. A nice refuge in the city feels like walk in the woods.

Great local park offering a 1.3 mile loop which surrounds two ponds. Dogs welcome, people tolerated. The trail is well played out offering alot for everyone. I've only seen in winter months but it appears a community garden is on site as well.

I love this park. It is awesome that you can actually have your dog off leash. It's much bigger than one would think, there's tons of footpaths to walk. My grandfather actually built all of the bridges found there, so it has sentimental value, too. It's a great spot to snowshoe in the winter, as well!

Amazing off leash dog park. There are two pond areas and a large field for the dogs to run around. The trails are fairly short around the pond but extend up the hill. The community that attends are very friendly and responsible dog owners. Overall one of my favorite places to take my dog in the area.

It's a great spot! At the end of a street in a quiet neighborhood, it's got 2 cool playground sets, looks like 1 is for the younger tikes, plus a swing set. It also has a baseball/tee ball area, that's fenced in. There's shady spots & a trash bin! Great family, kid friendly fun!

Ian L — Google review
Nice park, well maintained, my 4-yr liked it, but I could see it to be boring for older kids (4-5th grade and above). You will need shoes that can get muddy because the drainage is poor. Also, you will need bug spray for the same reason. However, if you go prepared, the younger ones will love it.
Kathi H — Google review
The playground is suitable for younger children. My 9 year old got bored quickly. There are lots of sticks to play with & acorns to gather. It gets rather muddy in the spring. There is a covered picnic table area as well.
