Nestled in the picturesque neighborhood of Xochimilco in Oaxaca City, Chepiche Cafe offers a tranquil and inviting garden setting, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely breakfast. The cafe's menu features a variety of local favorites such as enfrijoladas, chilaquiles, fresh fruit bowls, pancakes, and hearty egg dishes made with seasonal ingredients from nearby farms.
What a gem this place is! I had breakfast here three days in a row, throughout my stay in Oaxaca. The food is fantastic and beautifully presented, the staff are lovely, and the atmosphere on the patio is great. Will miss this!

July262025 2nd visit she ordered eggs Benedict/bacon that comes with potatoes and saavocado. Benny was really good my criticism is it was delivered only warm so I think it sat for a bit beofre service, the potatoes we COLD and tasted of 3 days old refrigerator storage whichcwas a huge disappointment as I was starving for some nice crisp breakfast potatoes. He ordered torta ahogada sandwich wasn't just warm not hot, flavors were good. We will try again to see what happens. Note to server: please deliver the food HOT! Note to kitchen staff: please crisp the potatoes on griddle or in a skillet. Stale potatoes 😔 Lovely place! We walked from La Cascada walked East on Genaro Vasquez street. There is zero signage from this direction and after speaking someone from the restaurant we were told they are not allowed signage per the city. Bummer because this place ROCKS! . We visited on father's day they were not that busy about 10 tables sat. Our order was taken quickly and drinks arrived right away. He ordered cappuccino and I had orange juice. He ordered huevos rancheros and I ordered French toast. We really enjoyed our food. Our server was amazing and I forgot to note his name. Only complaint we ordered eggs over medium and they came sunny side up but the whites were fully cooked. The place is very clean including the restrooms.

We had breakfast here last week and ohh my it was FABULOUS. The food was delicious, the service was excellent and the atmosphere was perfect. The food was delivered quickly, it was hot and fresh. Highly recommend. Very reasonably priced. ❤️ You can follow our journey around Mexico on YouTube or facebook, gracias 😊✌🏼👇🏼👇🏼 2 Gringos On The Gulf

Great quick service! Amazing portions, flavor and presentation!

We visited Chepiche Cafe during our stay in Oaxaca. We heard great things about this spot. Although the food was good, the service was a bit slow. Went during brunch time where they offer mainly sandwiches and salads. Although breakfast is served till 2:00 p.m. we were hoping to try some of the bigger dishes that are not available until dinner. They focus on using fresh and local ingredients from local vendors. Even though it's beautiful to sit outside, there are lots of trees with nuts that attracts squirrels out and they constantly drop Nutshells and leaves down to your food.

Unexpected delightful dining experience. Beautiful courtyard to enjoy a peaceful meal with family, friends, or just yourself. The service was friendly and fast. The food was delicious. Don't overlook this gem. Make sure to go and enjoy all there is to offer at this sweet neighborhood cafe.

Hands down the best breakfast spot in Oaxaca. It was so good we came here multiple times to try different items. They have really good coffee and freshly squeezed juices. A beautiful outdoor seating area and courtyard. Their pancakes were amazing as well as their pastries like their warm banana bread. Everything was delicious and highly recommend coming here. We loved it here! ❤️

Excellent food and service in a beautiful, shady courtyard. Exceeded expectations…there are so many wonderful places in Oaxaca, but we liked this one so much we went back for another meal. Highly recommended!

Sagrado Filemón I Pan y Café is a newly opened establishment in Oaxaca, offering a unique destination for coffee enthusiasts. Founded by David Garcia and head roaster Valeria Pantoja, it focuses on showcasing Oaxacan coffees sourced from local producers. The café's interior features painted tiles leading to the espresso bar and an inviting rooftop space.
One of my favourite food + coffee spots in town! There is a little rooftop area that’s quite relaxing which we loved (requires going up some narrow stairs but we somehow managed with a baby and stroller🤣). Their Mocha was absolutely incredible, so rich and creamy! Their staff are genuine and nice. Their Chicken & Waffles and Barbacoa Sandwich were soooo delicious! We’ll definitely be back :)
Maria G — Google review
Excellent breakfast spot. I tried the French toast and it was amazing. Unlike anything I've ever had before. The pan was excellent as well and they had a great selection of beverages (coffee, beer, cold brew drinks).
Tamara H — Google review
Sagrado Filemón ranks among the top three breakfast / brunch experiences of my life. It’s a quaint, relaxed rooftop. We ordered the pan cacao (flakey bread pastry with a coffee cream and topped with cacao nibs), the guava cream filled pastry, the breakfast pizza topped with eggs, the arroz con leche with fruit, and the savory churro breakfast sandwich - for two people. We were stuffed for the rest of the day, but not one regret. Order anything - you can’t go wrong.
Sareena R — Google review
Still exploring all the cafes but this is the best coffee I’ve found in Oaxaca as of writing this review. Didn’t get to try the food but they do offer a solid selection of food options. Service was okay. Seating is limited. You can work here although the WiFi was not working when we were there.
Ambrose — Google review
I came here specifically for their guava cold brew since it sounded so delicious to me, I’m a sucker for everything guava. It’s definitely a strong cold brew with a tart flavor, you couldn’t go wrong with it. Strong yet sweet. The vibes were so beautiful and whoever chose the playlist for this cafe ,keep doing it :D. Such a romantic playlist

If you're in Oaxaca, you can't miss this restaurant. I had one of the best brunches I've ever had in my life at Sagrado Filemon. I got the Panqueques Salados and my fiance got the Pizzayuno. The gravy on the pancakes was mind-blowing. To drink, I got the Ayer at the staff's recommendation and was not disappointed. It was extremely refreshing and unexpected. My fiance got the Guave Brew, which was also delicious. We sat on the patio which was a lovely experience.

This a great place to have breakfast in Oaxaca, not super touristy, great service, delicious food. They honor the traditional ingredients and elevate them in a cool and delicious way! Definitely a must when visiting Oaxaca ;)

Really yummy brunch spot in centro Oaxaca, close to Santo Domingo church. Food looked great The bread is one of the best I’ve tried, real soft and caused no bloating. I got the huevos with salsa and a matcha latte 💗

Itanoní is a vibrant cantina in Oaxaca, known for its regional tortilla dishes made with corn, guava, and chocolate. The restaurant offers an authentic experience that captures the true essence of Oaxacan cuisine. It's a favorite spot among locals for its reverence for native Mexican corn and the various ways it's prepared into dishes like tetelas and tascalate.
Delicious traditional Oaxacan food, great vibes. SC Approved.
Sean C — Google review
Worth the hype, a gorgeous interior and deserving of the Michelin. A bit pricey and the chicharron was too fatty, but definitely should make your list.
Aric Q — Google review
The food is good and delicious but 🚨$291.00 Mexican pesos the price a jug of lemon water with mint!! Don't be abusive. ‼️‼️‼️
Pauline L — Google review
Excellent restaurant serving traditional Oaxacan food. Known for their use of different & preparations of corn. I had a classic memelita with queso de Chiapas (kinda funky & good strong flavor) as well as a quesadilla with pork fat & epazote. Both delicious. Cash only. Recommended!
Brian F — Google review
I went for breakfast early in the morning when they’re not busy, and the service was friendly and fast. The outdoor space is lovely but the seat by the open kitchen gives you a close view of the making process which is very cool. I enjoyed their specialty tetelas and the Oaxaca specialty memelitas. Also try their cacao drinks!
Ina L — Google review
It's a bit far away from downtown but it's worth a walk or a short taxi trip. They have nice memelitas, tetelas and tostadas. All cooked in the traditional way. Prices are above average. Drinks are quite expensive (beer and sodas)
Nikko — Google review
Fantastic food. The restaurant is listed in the Michelin list of best restaurants in Oaxaca. The owner or staff will describe the dish and its origins. Excellent choice for breakfast lunch or dinner.
Frank O — Google review
This place is fantastic. You can watch them preparing the mass in full view and then preparing and cooking everything. Portions are small and affordable enough to try lots of things and share with the people you're with. You can absolutely tell a difference with the quality and freshness of the tortillas.

Marito & Moglie Café stands out as a visually appealing specialty coffee shop in Oaxaca City. Founded by Aurora Tostado and Stafano De Bellis in 2019, this café on Avenida Miguel Hidalgo offers a selection of Oaxacan-produced coffee from regions reaching as high as 1850 meters above sea level.
One of the best brunch spots in town. It’s down to earth and doesn’t try to be high brow. The space is beautiful with a courtyard that provides an escape from the bustle while being just around the corner. Service is excellent. Friendly faces and short wait times. Coffee is delicious and none of the orders have missed. We’ve made this our daily breakfast spot in the city. The banquettes are made with fresh bread and unbelievably tasty ingredients. Granola is flavorful and the shakshuka is great as well!
Michael Y — Google review
We adore this little cafe. Seems like a coffee and pastry stop if you just walk by but it opens up to a small dining room and even larger courtyard dining. We go every time we’re at n Centro Oaxaca. Which is now three times. Fresh squeezed juice. Cappuccino. Breakfast menu items for lots of palates. We tried our first Shakshouka. - Amazing. Shakshouka is a Maghrebi dish of eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, olive oil, peppers, onion, and garlic, commonly spiced with cumin, paprika, and cayenne pepper.
Megan T — Google review
First things first, the handbrew/filtrado coffee is absolutely delicious. I’d recommend the sierra norte for its rich, chocolatey notes, and I’d like to thank the friendly and knowledgeable server for making the recommendation. I stopped by twice for two equally delicious breakfasts: one with shakshuka, and the other with avocado toast. The beautiful whitewashed courtyard is surrounded by trees and bougainvillea, and made me feel like I was really on vacation. The only thing you might want to note is that the WiFi signal isn’t as strong outside, however there is a dining room indoors as well.
Alice L — Google review
I absolutely loved the courtyard area – it's such a relaxing spot, with vibrant colors and beautiful plants that create a peaceful atmosphere. It's perfect for enjoying a light breakfast or getting some studying done. The banana bread and croissants were both a 10/10, and the matcha was excellent as well. The service was attentive and friendly, making the experience even better. Highly recommend!

Best breakfast place in Oaxaca! Great coffee, tea and matcha. Every single dish is devine. You can’t go wrong here.
Clara S — Google review
Coolest place, coolest vibes, coolest food, coolest cafe. I loved how there were pillows/cushions on the benches we were sitting at, and the whole local-vibe of the cafe was really awesome. The artwork and furniture and just ugh everything. There was outdoor and indoor seating, half of us were outside and the other half inside. The waitress that was serving us was really sweet and adorable whenever she was trying to figure out who ordered what. I ordered the iced strawberry matcha latte and the toast de huevos revueltos, which were both AMAZING!! I wasn't expecting to like them as much as I did! My friend got the avocado toast hot chocolate oaxaqueño, which were also pretty dang good. Overall, can't express how much you should try this place out!

Criollo is a popular casual eatery in Oaxaca City, known for its locally sourced ingredients and outdoor seating. It is part of an exclusive selection of restaurants representing the best of Oaxacan cuisine, from traditional roots to innovative interpretations. The restaurant is led by renowned chefs Enrique Olvera and Luis Arellano, offering refined dishes in a beautifully designed space with a relaxed, open-air vibe.
Magical. What a treat of a restaurant in Oaxaca. This tasting menu venue has unbelievable service, a gorgeous venue with an open sky in center, unbelievable service, and wow the food was incredible. I don’t know how this place is not Michelin. And we did a tasting menu with alcohol pairing and the total was under $150/person, to me that’s less than half the price of a similar tasting menu without the alcohol! The food was truly incredible, the dinner lasted 2.5 hours, the beverage liquor pairing wasn’t just wine, it was beer cocktails truly a fun dinner. I couldn’t recommend Criollo enough. If you come to Oaxaca this is the most visit restaurant.
Sean L — Google review
Fantastic tasting menu with unique and local flavors and large portions. I was very pleased with this restaurant - the courtyard is cute and cozy and the server was helpful and friendly. My favorites were the soft shell crab taco, sea bass, and salad with salmon roe. I was also able to easily modify the tasting menu to be pescetarian friendly.
Chris B — Google review
We enjoyed dining here very much! We first came here on a tour with Omar and then came back for lunch. The setting is gorgeous in the middle of a garden. You have chickens running around under your feet and it’s quite endearing while we were here. One of the staff lit up some leaves and walked the smoking leaves all through the restaurant in a ceremonial manner. We only had a couple of dishes for lunch but they were delicious and had great portions.
Nicky J — Google review
The food is a mix of creativity, native flavours and innovation. You are in for a treat when it comes to the drinks and food. The 6 course meal begins very strong with some of the most amazing apatizers I've ever had. Everything is thoughtfully put together and arrives fresh and warm. The only disappointment of this meal was the workers serving it. They aren't excited about the ingredients, they seem rehersed when talking about the complexity of each dish. It's a shame to have a kitchen work so hard on this incredible meal, and have very dry personalities precenting it. The staff was just not friendly at all. You feel like you are intruding by being there. At one point we poked our heads to check out the amazing bar. We were given uncomfortable looks. This would have been a good opportunity for someone to invite us over to the bar on a different occasion or explained more of the concept. We went when the restaurant was quiet and had only a few other tables. They had a lot of staff standing around. I think that with an incredible menu you need to have people who are also passionate about precenting it to you.
Azucena K — Google review
10/10 - this place is great! on the pricier side but in my opinion totally worth it if you’re looking for a delicious oaxacan upscale meal! we went to pujol a week prior and almost thought this was better. each course was a delight, perfectly timed and they were very accommodating of dietary restrictions.
Vivian S — Google review
Fantastic original gourmet food, gorgeous location, great staff. Was a little more expensive but totally worth it. I had the egg taco- inside was an over easy egg- delicious.

Thank you for an amazing morning. Breakfast followed by a cooking class, that went through till early afternoon. Exceptional experience, great taste sensations. Our chefs were so engaging with our whole group across different ages. A must do. Thank you to the team and Jesus for the experience
Andrew P — Google review
Beautiful Interiors, HORRIFIC HYGIENE The biggest disappointment of our Oaxaca trip. We booked brunch, but on arrival were told only expensive set menus were available. After showing our booking, they reluctantly provided the regular menu. I ordered a local slow-cooked meat dish that took ages to arrive, and when I made a first bite, I ended up with a long thick black hair in my mouth. I am blonde with short hair so there was no doubt about the nature of that hair. The waiters were in a bit of a shock and dish was replaced, but there was no apology or acknowledgment from management for such a serious hygiene issue. Beautiful interiors, but overall unacceptable service and standards. I do not recommend this place.

Restaurant
Memelas Doña Vale is a renowned food stall located in the Central de Abastos, Oaxaca City's largest food market. Valentina Hernandez, also known as Doña Vale, has been serving her signature memelas for over 30 years. These traditional Oaxacan street foods are made from corn dough and topped with black beans, cheese, and salsa.
Memelas Doña Vale lives up to its reputation with absolutely delicious memelas at an incredible value. The flavors are authentic, and it’s no surprise this spot is so popular. There was a long line when I went on the weekend, but it moved relatively quickly, and the wait was worth it. One thing to note, as others have mentioned, is to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings while you’re there. If you’re in Oaxaca, this is a must-visit spot for a truly local experience!
Abdullah — Google review
Epic. Truly. Some places are overrated. This place is about tradition and consistency. The most incredible experience! Especially having the queen, Dona Vale herself sit and have breakfast at our table. A truly unforgettable experience. On top we ran into @mario.come.oaxaca for breakfast. Magical.
Richard P — Google review
Outstanding Breakfast for Us For The Second Consecutive Year at Doña Vale. We Just Had To Come Back and She and Her Small Staff Did NOT Disappoint. Tried the pork tacos first to change it up but the Mermelas both with Morita Salsa (sauce) and the Tomato Salsa Were Off The Scale Good. The Hot Chocolate with Water is To Die For.
John E — Google review
Came here to say I tried it. These weren’t the best memelas I had but overall good. The tortillas are made fresh and sure tasted like it. The meat was cooked well and the sauce and salsas were good. I like the atmosphere the most of the hustle and bustle of the market. I was the only tourist the day I went say it was nice talking to locals and hearing the opinions about the food and what to order. I think the price is a bit steep for memelas but again, she was featured on Netflix and always has a line of people waiting to try her food.
Lauren C — Google review
Doña Vale is an absolute Oaxacan street-food treasure! Their memeles are nothing short of phenomenal, each bite delivers rich, earthy flavor with just the right balance of masa, queso, and savory toppings. These traditional Oaxacan treats are elevated to perfection, with house-made dough that’s light yet satisfying and toppings that pop with freshness and authenticity. The setup channels street-food energy with warmth and authenticity, and the team is friendly, welcoming, and passionate about sharing Oaxaca’s culinary heritage. Whether you go for the classic memel with beans and cheese, or try one of their creative specials, each one is crafted with care and bursting with flavor. For a genuine, unforgettable taste of Oaxacan street cuisine, memelas done right! Doña Vale Netflix Street Food is a must-stop. Exceptional quality and flavor in every bite!

Really tasty simple street food tacos! Would recommend trying the memelas with the salsa de morita, it does have a kick to it if you don’t like spice try the tomato salsa instead

Featured on a Netflix "Street Food" Episode. This was in an open air market deep in a Oaxacan neighborhood. 20 minute walk from Centro. As usual, this deep I was only gringo I saw the whole time there. My kind of place. 1) Chocolate de Aqua. 2) Memelas with Huevos, Morita sauce & tomato sauce with Habanero & Serranos. * Making of the chocolate water. * Full house with a line waiting.

A gem in the heart of a historic neighborhood! We were hungry on New Years Day and were so happy this breakfast place was open. The space felt so quaint, and the food was great. We had the lunch sandwiches and a cortado. The service quick even though they were so packed with patrons.

One of my favorite cafés - such a relaxing space, and I love that they sell spices and oil in the front. I have to recommend the rol de queso con frutos rojos. I took my mom when she was in town, and they offered us warm fresh pastries along with our breakfast :)

We came in around 8.30 AM, tired from our overnight bus journey. The food and hospitality here totally revived us. Get the Oaxacan hot chocolate with hot water (not milk), the panqué de plátano, the enfrijolada for a wholesome breakfast. The ingredients are so fresh, you can taste them in every bite. A baker from the kitchen walked out to show us the fresh baked goods. Delightful!

An absolute hidden gem! We were so glad to have found this cafe tucked away in a small street away from the hustling streets. The coffee are all locally sourced in Oaxaca and breads are made in house! They pride themselves for all organic ingredients. The pastries were divine, especially the Guava pie. This turned out to be the go to spot for our morning fixes. The owner's aunt Sandra was extremely hospitable and assisted us with our trip planning.

Nestled within the stunning Casa Antioneta, a former colonial palace turned boutique hotel in Oaxaca, Muss Café is a charming spot known for its beauty and ambiance. It has become popular among digital nomads who appreciate the coffee, food, and co-working space in the inner courtyard. The café also offers a plant-filled rooftop terrace with breathtaking city views and excellent cocktails. With its intimate setting featuring smooth wood and an extensive brew bar, Muss Café provides a unique experience for enjoying coffee.
Absolutely loved it here!! A friend and I were trying to find a place to find to sit down and study, and this cafe was absolutely perfect for that! The baristas were so so sweet and friendly, and gave us the WiFi for the cafe so we could study. I ordered a matcha latte and my friend ordered a jamaica(?) drink. They were both amazing! I was enamored with the matcha. Would so highly recommend this place!

This is tucked within a very unique hotel. Both first floor and the third floor rooftop are a places of exquisite atmosphere and one could spend the whole day there just relaxing. Food was great too!

We had a brunch there, really enjoyed it! The food was amazing, coffee and matcha as well. They’ve got quite a few vegetarian options. They also have a very cute courtyard, unfortunately all tables there were reserved or occupied. But the cafe itself is also lovely so we didn’t mind.

A lovely and professional coffee shop!!! As a tourist and coffee lover hanging around Mexico, I tried some cafe in CDMX, Purto Escondido and Oaxaca, this one is the best for now☺️Ninana is so cute!! She brewed geisha and honey bourbon for us, the former one is perfect with incredibly good price… I wanna buy one bag to brew at home myself but sadly knew they only have a few left🥹Mar provided good service too! She serve sparkling water with the coffee, it made coffee more tasty I think. So thoughtful. I’ll definitely come back next time and recommend to all my friends visiting Oaxaca.❤️

I was craving healthy vegetarian food that wasn’t too heavy. Got myself a hummus on toast with grilled mushrooms and guacamole and salad. With gorgeous open air seating that’s also quiet, this place is a real find. Staff are lovely too - happiness is ❤️

Hidden gem in Oaxaca A great spot for coffee and pastries, tucked inside the courtyard of a beautiful hotel. The setting is peaceful and charming — perfect for a break, especially if you’re visiting the museum next door.

Spent a sunny afternoon at Café Muss playing backgammon on the rooftop and couldn’t have asked for a nicer spot. Beautiful views, relaxed vibe, not too busy. Mar and Lily were especially lovely and made us feel really welcome. Perfect place to hang out in Oaxaca.

It’s attached to a hotel so has a more international crowd. The food reflects that. They have local things but if you want to take a break from that, things like bacon egg and cheese on an English muffin hit the spot. The servers are so nice. Great coffee according to my wife but I’m an iced tea guy, and it can be hard to find, they have it here. Came to Muss Cafe practically every day.

Pan:Am is a renowned bakery and coffee shop in Oaxaca, offering a relaxed atmosphere and a covered terrace. Their menu features housemade artisanal bread, pastries, waffles, egg scrambles, omelettes, chilaquiles, and Mexican classics like huevos salseados. The bakery prides itself on baking fresh bread and pastries on-site using local farm eggs and veggies. Visitors rave about their hot horchata with cinnamon and chocolate de leche.

We really enjoyed the Chilaquiles de Leña. We came back here twice. The vibe/atmosphere is super chilled and relaxed. There’s no WiFi. But tbh it’s fine for a breakfast spot - it’s not the kind of place to cowork with a laptop or take a video meeting from.

It's a good food service! Their food is really delicious, I would go again. The place is clean, not too noisy, definitely

Incredible food and they open early, breakfast is fantastic. The Enchiladas Suizas and Farmhouse Omelette are both delicious; everything that came out to the tables nearby looked equally exceptional. Big portions. Don’t leave without adding a side of Guacamole and a Chocolate de Agua. If you’re traveling with kids, this place is very family friendly in every way — waffles with Agave syrup, fresh seasonal fruit, omelettes which can be adjusted for kids’ palette, fresh juices. Beautiful place, relaxed vibe, really delicious food. Highly recommend visiting this place at the start of your Oaxaca trip as you may want to return for many more breakfasts! NB: bring cash, they don’t accept cards every day.

PAN:AM is a Must for breakfast in Oaxaca city. The bread is baked flawlessly. So delicious. The menu is excellent. The chilaquiles were a little crunchy how I like them and saucy. My cappuccino was delicious. No complaints about the service. Just be sure to get there early as they get really busy. Excellent place to start your day.
Daniela B — Google review
I recently dined at PAN:AM and, unfortunately, my experience was far from enjoyable. The service was extremely disappointing from start to finish. We had to wait far too long for our food, and even more frustratingly, to settle our bill. When our coffees finally arrived, they were cold, and the servers didn’t seem concerned or willing to make it right. The staff lacked friendliness and weren’t accommodating when we expressed our dissatisfaction. It felt like we were an inconvenience rather than welcomed customers. While the restaurant’s ambiance may have been inviting, the overall service left much to be desired. I won’t be returning anytime soon, and I would hesitate to recommend PAN:AM to others.

Really don't know why this place is so highly reviewed. It's nothing special. My americano was way too bitter--I actually couldn't drink it. I ordered a Croque Madame which was pretty awful. The menu seems like over priced junk food. I would recommend eating at the many markets instead of this place. I'm sad I wasted a good meal in Oaxaca!

Mercado 20 de Noviembre is a bustling traditional covered market in Oaxaca City, Mexico. It offers a wide variety of goods, including fresh produce, baked goods, and local street foods. Adjacent to the market are stalls selling artisanal products such as hand-crafted huaraches and elaborately embroidered blouses. The market is known for its diverse offerings and indigenous influence, with vendors speaking a variety of languages including Spanish.
Definitely a must go as tourist! In the centre of the city so very accessible The market is clean and well kept. Has different sections from food to clothes to souvenir to restaurants. Also had amazing dinner

Pretty packed market! Lots of amazing things to browse and purchase. I found the food stalls to be quite pushy in sales and will always be in your face! Just continue walking if you have this issue. Lots of tasty treats and don’t be afraid to ask for a try of something! Loved the spicy crickets personally.

A must-visit food market in Oaxaca — loud, chaotic, and full of amazing grilled meats. The famous “smoke hall” is packed with vendors grilling tasajo, cecina, and chorizo right in front of you. Everything smells incredible and tastes even better. Ordering a small plate of grilled cactus on the side is a fun local touch. Be prepared: it’s very crowded and seating is limited. Some vendors may guide you to a table but then require you to order drinks from them — a bit of a tourist trap. We were pushed into buying beverages we didn’t want. Something to watch out for.

Great Market - Perfect for Exploring Shops and Restaurants I had a fantastic time exploring this lively market! Pan:am Abasolo is a charming bakery and cafe located in a traditional Oaxacan house with vibrant walls and a lovely courtyard patio. It has gained recognition for its freshly-baked bread, pastries, and good coffee. The menu offers unique twists on traditional Mexican breakfast dishes, such as incorporating nopales in their huevos divorciados. With locations near Santo Domingo Church and in the city's northeast, both spots provide a delightful morning ambiance.
Came here for breakfast, food was great, a bit pricey for others restaurants with the same items. They do say they make everything from scratch and it’s organic. I can’t complain the food was delicious!

The food is average, nothing special, we returned the two cappuccinos, they both were weak, water down coffee, chillaquiles de la abuela were ok, the machaca was nothing special, we were still hungry, also ordered the chicken pesto sandwich also average, and the ham n cheese croissant ( the sandwiches had mexican names on the menu, but i have the ingredients right) we didn't finish the ham n cheese croissant, tasted like gas station sandwich to be honest. The bathrooms are small and lack of ventilation, prices were average for that part of town. Service wasn't the best, they looked overwhelmed.

Adi F — Google review
I had this restaurant on my list for brunch and finally made it after 5 weeks in Oaxaca, but sadly it was one of the worst meals I had. I first ordered the jugo verde, which should have had both orange and apple juice in but clearly didn’t include either meaning it had no flavour / substance - it was just green water. They allowed me to change it for another type of juice, which was a little better but still pretty unexciting and also quite small. I then ordered the Manchaca con huevo and explained that I have an allergy to diary so requested no cheese, butter etc, which was acknowledged, but it still came out with cheese sprinkled over the refried beans and so had to go back. It was obvious the kitchen then simply removed the beans and some of the egg and sent the same dish back with new beans, by which point it was only luke warm and the plate also had a large fingerprint smeared across the side. The scrambled egg was very dry and didn’t have much flavour and the tortillas were similarly dry and very chewy so the meal was extremely boring overall, even with the addition of salsa picante. The patio area is also very dark due to all the umbrellas meaning there are only one or two tables it’s possible to work at. It’s a shame but I definitely can’t recommend eating here.
NW — Google review
Cute little breakfast spot with charming shaded courtyard. Service was good. Food and coffee was okay. Vainilla Concha was also very good as well. We ordered the Chilaquiles Abuela with an add in of eggs and chorizo on the side. The serving size was a little small, flavor was okay, eggs were overcooked, and chorizo was oversalted. The cappacinno was way overfrothed and the foam was like soapy bubbles instead of foam. Overall, still a great place to stop in for breakfast if you’re in the area but I would not go out of the way to come here. They did also have reliable wifi and allowed us to work from our laptops which we greatly appreciated.
Ambrose — Google review
Cute place, good food. If you want to pay with card they’ll bring you to a different location. Waiters kind of ignored us (maybe busy?) but all in all loved the food. Horchata was delicious! Carrot cake was amazing (had dried cranberries!) and waffles were tender.

Loved the place!! Worth i I t. Hot horchata is very good. Actually everything was good. We ordered waffles, Benedict, sandwich, quiche, various breads, croissants. We were working when we went there, they were really nice to find us a table with power plug next to it even though it was very busy. I would go again and again!!

Cute place! We went for breakfast/brunch and we had a table right away, we went a bit late. Off the bat, they advised us that they only accept cash which was a huge negative. The variety of brunch was okay and service was very slow. Food was okay, I ordered an egg sandwich, the sandwich was very greasy, however, there was a good food presentation. I really did not like that they only accepted cash when I visited. The service was not great as they were not nice. However, the restaurant was clean and prices were okay for the area. I would go somewhere else for better breakfast, better service, and a card terminal.

Cabuche is a cozy spot that feels more like someone's living room than a restaurant. The chef has mastered the art of creating a red posole broth that bursts with chili flavor without overwhelming heat. Their menu offers loving interpretations of classic Mexican street food and market favorites, with the vegetarian pozole being a standout dish. Instead of using meat, they incorporate mushrooms and various vegetables to create their red, white, and green varieties of pozole.
We had the Burrito con Pollo and the Enchiladas con Mole, and they were absolutely delicious. The mole might even be the best we've tasted in Oaxaca! The restaurant might not have the most modern or aesthetically striking appearance from the outside, but don’t let that fool you. The quality of the food is outstanding, with authentic local flavors that truly impressed us. At around $10 per dish, it’s also very affordable. The waitresses were also very friendly and attentive. One thing to note is that you can only pay with cash, but there’s an ATM conveniently located right across the street, so this isn’t a problem. Overall, this restaurant should have a rating of at least 4.5/5. If you’re looking for authentic Oaxacan food with great service, this spot is a must-try!
Jan-Paul K — Google review
My meal was delicious and healthy. I got a glass of the orange water and a corral burrito, which came with a beautiful and fresh side salad. The main dining room has big doors that open onto the street, so there’s a lot of natural light and people watching. This place only takes cash, as you’ll see from the various signs on the walls and on the menu.
Alice L — Google review
Lovely little restaurant. My second time here in 2024, last time I had the pozole and this time my wife and I shared the bartered shrimp tacos and black mole enmolada with plantain, and everything was 10/10. The agua tamarindo was also really good. The batter on the shrimp was light and tasty, not greasy. The black mole was decadent. The thinner tortillas here add an elevated feel to an authentic local experience.
Nabil W — Google review
Great food, service and atmosphere at a very good price. After eating at many highly rated restaurants, I was very happy with the quality and variety of food at Cabuche. The green pozole with pork was super flavorful, the birria quesadillas were delicious and the tajaso huaracha was my favorite. They have indoor and out door seating and the restaurant is clean. Definitely recommend this place.
JMQZ — Google review
Fantastic food, we enjoyed the pozole, fresh salad with grapefruit, radishes and more! We also got a Birria taco for later! Excellent for the family with small and big sizes of salads and pozoles. We will be back. Service was great as well, dinner with two negro Morelos under 400 pesos, a real deal yummy.

Great restaurant! The shrimp taco was huge with 4 meaty shrimps for 70 pesos. The salads were tasty and fresh. Juice was good too for like 35 pesos. Clean bathroom and great service. Came to eat twice during our trip. Honestly better than many of the "fine dining" restaurants we've eaten at Oaxaca
Ryan A — Google review
Authentic flavors, attentive service, good portions, competitive prices. Different lunch specials during the week. The outdoor dining area is nice, garden-like with its pomegranate tree and numerous plants. Wifi is available. We returned a few days later for breakfast and wow! The chilaquiles with salsa are stupendous, lots of flavor but very mild. The huitlacoche omelet was very good too. Love the coffee too. Most breakfasts are a little under $10 USD including fruit or juice and coffee.
R J — Google review
The food was fresh and tasty with a twist on local flavors. The Huaraches were good but not as distinctive as you can get with street vendors. The location is in a quieter chic part of the city and the space was pretty spacious. The grapefruit salad was the best thing we ate though. It was very refreshing and the most unique thing we ate in the city.

This mexican restaurant Casa Oaxaca Reforma is a great place to go for delicious food and excellent customer service. It's also a great place to celebrate from a birthday to a romantic dinner.
I booked the table for two at Sun 17:30 but it closed at 6 pm, I was surprised that we can still get in. The starter is amazing, hand-made and fresh salsa that you can adjust the level of spice! The waiter is super nice and he even tried to learn mandarin to wish us have a good meal! We have ordered local dishes made with mole. The beef ribs and turkey with different kind of mole that you can taste different style of Mexican cuisines. We enjoyed a lot, highly recommend it.

We ordered chille en nogada and chicken black mole and an artesan beer. Chile en nogada was good and filling, but it lacked a bit of flavor. Chicken black mole was ok, but I had better from other restaurants. It came with 2 small fried platain. The home made salsa was nice, but it lacked flavor as well. The servers meant well, but took away our plates before we could finished it. Overall, it was dissapointing for an upscale Michellin restaurant. The heart of Michellin restaurant is the gastronomic creativity and the sensationalim of the flavor. We expected more, but walked away dissapointed. We won't be going back.

OUTSTANDING!! My wife and I were only doing Michelin Star mentioned restaurants while in Oaxaca for the first time ( except for a great food tour we did at a HUGE local market). Casa Oaxaca did an amazing job from start to finish. The service was impeccable. Our waiter, who made salsa at the table, noted that we had different likes in our heat level on our salsa. After making the first salsa, he went away, on his own, and made a separate one that had more heat. So appreciated!! We did four appetizers because we wanted to try so much. Each did not disappoint. You just can’t get food like this at such a reasonable prices. Oh, the live music downstairs was top quality. So good!
Gary S — Google review
If you’re looking for a great spot to enjoy Oaxacan food without the hustle and bustle of the city center, Casa Oaxaca Reforma is a solid choice. It’s a bit further out, which means it’s quieter, and you can usually find a table without much waiting. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the food is delicious — generous portions and traditional Oaxacan dishes, including a really good mole. Prices are definitely on the higher side, but that’s pretty much expected for a restaurant of this brand. Still, if you explore a bit, you can find other spots in Oaxaca with similar quality for less. That said, if you’re after a mid-to-high-end meal and prefer to avoid the crowds downtown, this is a great place to stop.

Can’t fault a single part of my evening at Casa Oaxaca Reforma. From the incredibly attentive, personable and welcoming staff (thank you, Willie) to the incredible food and superb wine. Staff were keen to recommend the correct dishes to order to not waste anything and offer expertise. A great experience, and having read some of the other seemingly negative reviews I cannot seem to place how or why they have come about. Would highly recommend.

The table side salsa…amazing! Pork Belly Guacamole…delicious! Atmosphere and staff were excellent! Best meal of my 8 days in Oaxaca!
Rachel B — Google review
I found the overall experience at this restaurant to be mixed. While the food was decent with quality ingredients, the prices were notably high, affecting the value for money. The ambiance was beautiful, and the service was excellent, yet there was a sense that it caters more to those seeking a status-driven dining experience rather than exceptional cuisine.
Denny C — Google review
First of all I thought I was going to Casa Oaxaca but I ended up at Casa Oaxaca Reforma. I never got to go to casa Oaxaca but I'm sure the difference is huge. Castle Oaxaca Reforma was quite a disappointment. I ordered two soups for my daughters and both of them were not even room temperature. I was really surprised because at the price point everything should be spot on and the soup should not be cold. I did not return it because my daughters were hungry but even they 7 and 9 mentioned that it was not hot. We ordered a couple of entrees to share. One of them was beef ribs and the other one was some pork dish. Neither of them were hot. The beef ribs consisted of one rib which seemed like it was cooked a long time ago a thrown together salad and some room temperature roasted potatoes. The pork dish was worse. It consisted of some knuckle or bone with very little meat on it. The same thrown together salad as the beef rib and no potato. This was truly a disappointing and expensive experience. The best part of the evening were the cocktails. I got to admit the cocktails were delicious. I had one with mezcal and passion fruit that blew me away. Also the table side salsa preparation was nice but the south side itself was nothing to write home about. I definitely won't be going here again. They really need to step up their game as far as food preparation and the temperature in which it is served

I personally loved everything about this place! The setting, the food, the ambience, etc.! My friends and I came here for a quick and chill dinner, and we were actually the only ones in there at the time, which might've been cause for worry about food poisoning, but no worries we were totally fine! It might've just been because nobody else had been craving mediterranean food in Oaxaca at the time, who knows. The atmosphere was super neat, and the decorations made me feel like I'd stepped into a different country altogether. I ordered the falafel sandwich? with a side of couscous? or some type of quinoa salad (my goodness I need to educate myself on the actual names of these dishes) and I tried some of my friend's falafel bowl. Both were amazing in my opinion! I'm just a big mediterranean food lover, I'm not picky. I also ordered some chai, which was little more earthy than I like but ah well. At least the kombucha my friend ordered was good. Staff were super chill and very kind, we tipped them a little more than we'd anticipated but ah well I think they deserve it. Overall awesome place if you're craving some mediterranean food.

El Morocco delivers with exceptional food, service & value! ¡Gracias Alejandra!

Surprisingly good! I was a bit sceptical of having Moroccan food in Oaxaca, glad I went in. The upstair area deco kind of cliche but kind of sets the mood. Dishes are well served and quite delicious. My only suggestion goes to the tea section, got the mint tea, they should extract the leaves before serving otherwise it gets to concentrated and bitter.

I had a bagel on both occasions which was delicious. The was well cooked, the manchego was gooey and melted, and the bacon was salty and crispy. Wifi was fast, so I could sit here and work without issues. Staff are kind, and service was good.

Fonda Florecita is a classic market food stall located in La Merced market, offering a variety of traditional Mexican dishes that have been local favorites for over 50 years. The stall provides an array of must-try options, including salsa de queso, quesadillas with zucchini flowers, and atole de chocolate. It is known for serving classic Oaxacan fare such as enfrijoladas, enmoladas, and memelas.
Florecita offers beautiful food and an amazing TELATE. This is the place to eat if you want the real Oaxacan experience!

A fun atmosphere and restaurant in La Merced market. Seating is at large tables in a quiet part of the market away from the busy vendors. The food was a good value and delicious. Service was fast and friendly and we had a good time. We had an enchilada, empanada and an open faced taco with fungus corn. All were excellent.
JMQZ — Google review
Located in Mercado de Merced which is quieter and less touristy than Mercado November 28. Food here was excellent and prices were lower as well.
Kevin Z — Google review
Got the enmolitas with mole coloradito, basically just tortillas stacked on top of each other covered with mole plus fresh cheese (not quesillo aka Oaxacan cheese). Mole was watered down, flavor was decent, tortillas were fine.

Sorry I don't speak Spanish, the review will be in English. Great place in a very 'local' market a bit outside Oaxaca center. The food is delicious and the staff is very nice. It is really nice stop for breakfast or lunch during the visit of this market. Easy with children.

Authentic traditional. Inside a Mercado. Locals there only. We had 2 cervesas, 2 empanadas, 1 caldo de pollo for $300 mxn

We enjoyed the corn and vegetable soup and chilaquilles with egg! The market was quiet at the time so we could simply focus on the food! The soup came with a lovely cheesy taco, but overall there could have been more seasoning to all the dishes and more flavour.

I have mixed feelings about this place. It was highly recommended so maybe my expectations were high, but it was a very mediocre chilaquiles with a pretty blah chorizo. I don't know. I wouldn't go back.

Pan con Madre is a renowned artisanal bakery in Oaxaca that introduced sourdough bread to the city. The aroma of freshly baked bread wafts through the air, drawing you into a bustling bakery where bakers work on various breads and pastries. Unique flavors like cardamom spirals, cheese and fig paste buns, dulce de leche rolls, and fresh focaccia are among their offerings.
Really lovely cafe with a beautiful outside space perfect for a relaxing breakfast. The apple strudel was absolutely phenomenal and also at a decent price. Servers were very kind and attentive, would definitely recommend if you are in Oaxaca. Strawberry and Rosemary water was also very nice.

This was a wonderful spot. Even though we had saved loads of restaurants before we visited Oaxaca, we had missed this one. But what a lovely treat it was to find. Lovely courtyard at the back, and yummy pastries and sandwiches. Our favourite was the prosciutto and apple sandwich - we ended up coming here a couple of times for it. Good coffee too!
Harriet R — Google review
Great cold brew, excellent pastries. The sandwich was good, but was small/didn’t have much filling. The guava and cheese pastry blew our minds and was our favorite. The service was great. Cute courtyard.
Carolyn B — Google review
Very cool cafe in Oaxaca city - the pastry I had was decent but didn’t blow my mind. I did really like the coffee though - had quite a unique taste to it. If I went back I’d try the focaccia as that seems to be what they’re known for!
Sophie B — Google review
Incredible handmade pastries - they were making them in the kitchen as we ordered. The lamination of the pastries was perfection, the flat white was the correct volume (European style) and the little courtyard with seating was lovely and atmospheric. We are definitely returning tomorrow!

One of the more decent bakeries I've tried in Mexico. Yummy pastries and cakes. The cold brew with ice was also a welcome relief in the scorching heat. Courtyard was a relaxing place to spend a bit of time chatting with my friends. Paid 564 pesos for the cakes/pastries pictured and 4 iced drinks.
Hf1187 — Google review
Great pastries but very indifferent service. During our afternoon visit, there was still a good variety of pastries available. We ordered three to share, but the staff seemed indifferent and gave off the vibe that they didn’t want to be there. The cashier assumed we wanted the pastries for takeaway without asking, and when I mentioned we wanted to eat them there, the reaction wasn’t the friendliest, which was a real bummer considering how delicious the pastries were. The small chairs were quite uncomfortable, but they served their purpose while we enjoyed our pastries. It’s unfortunate that the service didn’t match the quality of the pastries, as it could have made for a much more enjoyable experience.
Alberto R — Google review
The focaccia here is delicious. My friend was in town visiting and we tried all three types and were blown away, but we especially loved the one with caramelized onion. Their veggie pizza is great - thin crust, flavorful sauce. Incredible bakery overall.

Nestled in the eastern part of Centro, Onnno Lonchería is a casual spot offering delectable sandwiches, salads, and American breakfast favorites like french toast and yogurt parfaits. Originally a grab-and-go sandwich shop, it has evolved into a place for connection and conversation. The owners draw from their culinary background in Chiapas and experience in various locations to create a menu that puts a fresh spin on traditional Mexican lunch dishes.
Super cute cafe with excellent food. I had a breakfast sandwich with eggs, cheese bacon and arugula on a fantastic bun. Plus a very tasty latte. All at a great price. Staff spoke English (which was helpful since my Spanish is only toddler-level). Will definitely return.

By far one of the best spots in Oaxaca. The bakery on Calle Morelos is great too. Would recommend the ham sandwich at the bakery. Huge fan of the maple latte too. The remodel of the restauraunt took my by surprise but it is so unique.

I've been obsessed with this restaurant for a while, from the perfect pastries to the great food and drinks, they excel at everything that they do. My favorite salad used to be the caesar until they took it off the menu but I got to try their ensalada de la casa which became my favorite and honestly it's one of the best salads I've had! Their burger and their sandwiches are really good too, but their pastries are on another level. They make a delicious banana bread that's my mom's favorite and I lovee their lemon and blueberry cake. Came back after the remodel and still love it! The service is always lovely and so is the place.

I was in Oaxaca for a total of 3 days and my partner and I came to Onnno once a day. This place was a 10/10 for everything, the vibe, the food, the drinks, the service. It also had the best chili oil that they offer when you order food! The pictures should speak for themselves. The guava pastry is a limited time item and it was the best fruit flavored pastry I’ve ever had and I live in NYC. Super spacious and vibe-y spot and very tourist friendly as their employees speak perfect English. The bbq pork sandwich is a must try, it’s so flavorful and the taste is so unique!

There’s a waitlist for a table on a Sunday morning. The mini lemon + blueberry cake (only on Sundays, 80 pesos) was not mini at all, it was pretty decently sized. The crust was a little tough, the cake wasn’t very moist upon you reach the blueberry jam core. The chai latte was not bad. The chicken sandwich was huge, buttery, cheesy and sinfully delicious. Chicken thighs were perfectly grilled and marinated. Portions were on the bigger side.

Good spot to grab some pastries. I got there about 1.5 hours after they opened and there was still a bunch of pastries left. They were out of one (I’m guessing their most popular) but I still had plenty of options to choose from. I got a galleta and one of the cinnamon buns. The galleta was good, I wish it didn’t have all the peanut butter and strawberries on top and was just plain. The cinnamon buns was my favorite of the two. I recommend coming here within the first 2 hours they open if you want a wide selection. The communal table was full when I arrived so I took mine to go. Cost for the pastries was 88…not too bad.

The place itself is really nice, not big but cute. They also give you water while you wait for your order. The staff is really lovely, they gave us a list whit advices where to have good meal around the city. Definitely a great place to go for breakfast and good atmosphere.

The rhubard danish has to be the most beautiful pastry I have had in my life, and it was very good as well. They seem to be decorating all the pastries "for here", so if you don't want cream, flower powder, or what not added, you need to say in advance. I thought the additions tasted good, were a nice touch and added to the experience. We also had the cardamom bun: it was good, but not as good as the rhubarb danish. I recommend trying the hot chocolate with water: it's traditional and thick enough without milk. There is wifi if you need it, the code is available on the table inside.

Taco restaurant
Tacos Del Carmen has been a beloved spot since 1977, serving up a variety of tacos, quesadillas, and memelas. The friendly staff behind the comal are known for their delicious agua de jamaica (hibiscus water) to complement the flavorful offerings. One of their standout specialties is the Tacos de flor de calabaza (squash blossom tacos), which feature fresh, vegetarian-friendly ingredients wrapped in freshly made corn tortillas.
So good we went back for more the next day. It's a bit of chaos, but just trust the process. Tacos are approx 28$ (pesos) each and the salsas are good and spicy. They're best known for the Chile relleno taco - it's a must.
Anastasia H — Google review
The hype is legit, mi amigos. This is one time where the emperor DOES have a new suit--and only the special can appreciate it. I ate here before I knew they were featured in the Netflix series, so my mind being blown was wholly due to the amazing food. Let's start with the fact that the sweet abuelas make all their tortillas from scratch. Rolling, kneading, everything ground and processed the way nature intended. So chewy, so corny, so perfect. Then there's the tacos themselves. In runner-up, we have the delicious Flor de Calabaza (y Champiñón) con Quesillo, probably the most perfect veg taco ever created. Tied with that is the Chile Relleno, bursting with capsaicin and flavor. And if I hadn't returned to the same stall that same evening, I would already have been satisfied. But I did come back for their evening menu, and that's when I had the greatest taco I'll probably ever had on this earth: Empanada de Amarillo con Pollo. Picture the fluffiest tortilla you've ever had enclosing the most savory, umami salsa amarillo you can imagine. Add to that juicy--and I cannot emphasize enough, JUICY--strips of chicken. And top it all with the greatest herb Americans have never heard of: hoja santa (holy herb). I could write sonnets about how much I love hoja santa, but then this review would be a tome. Let's just say that the combination of their amarillo, pollo and hoja santa is the stuff of dreams--delicious, savory, lip-smacking dreams. I loved this taco so much, I went back for it again before leaving Oaxaca--and found to my delight that it's one of the items they offer during the day AND night. I think I ate about 5 in total. You don't want to know how often I fantasize about this taco now that I'm state-side. Pretty sure it would make the holy herb feel much less holy.
Josephine L — Google review
I ordered the chorizo & quesillo taco, chile relleno taco and flor de calabaza quesadilla. The salsas have good flavor and are spicy, the food was just ok. Nothing extraordinary just a good spot to catch a quick breakfast. We went twice and it seemed busy but they served quickly.
Denise E — Google review
Empanadas with the yellow stew and shredded chicken was yummy. The drinks could be colder as it was a scorching day (maybe ask for the bottles at the bottom of the ice box!). We paid 300 pesos in total for 4 empanadas and 3 drinks. Very limited seating so be prepared to perch in the corner and scoff your taco!

Amazing rolled tacos (tacos placeros) filled with beans, quesillos and other fillings of choice. My fav filling was chile relleno. The ladies roast the rolled tacos on comal to give the tortilla crispy texture. My husband’s favourite was salsa de chicarron. Memelas with quesillos are also a treat. You know the place is good because there are so many locals waiting for their food. We went back twice.
Juyoon S — Google review
Super popular with tourists, thankfully not too many people the day I came. I got chile relleno and mushroom tacos, could've done with more flavor for the mushroom. Also got an empanada with amarillo (yellow mole) with chicken - SUPER tasty flavor, really enjoyed that. The sauce is also quite liquidy. Everything made on the spot so it's hot, and there are three salsas you can add at your leisure. 30MXN each per taco, 60 MXN for the empanada.
Andrea W — Google review
We heard a lot about this place and happy to try. We ordered several tacos, but a man who charges the order said no more tacos, tlayudas only. We were happy to try that also, however we noticed that two tlayudas was already cooked and waiting. In the mean time they were cooking tacos too! We got our food, people who came after us they got theirs tacos. Tlayudas that we got very dry and has no flavor. It was a huge disappointment. And there is a serious hygiene problem too. I am not expecting a super clean place but what we saw was not ok.

Las Quince Letras Restaurante is a renowned dining spot in Oaxaca, Mexico, known for its traditional Oaxacan cuisine and mezcal cocktails. It is part of an exclusive selection of restaurants representing the best of Oaxacan gastronomy. The restaurant offers hearty breakfast and brunch options featuring local ingredients like chilaquiles, enfrijoladas, tamales, enmoladas, and enchiladas prepared in the Oaxacan style.
I loooooved the guava mousse desert, amaaazing. Super awesome mezcalitas. The 3 mole mix is superb. The tacos are more like tlayudas for me, and not my favourite, but I’d definitely go back for the amaaazing mole and guava mousse! The mousse is caramel and has mezcal as well. It got a Michelin star so, you know, they obviously have high standards.
John A — Google review
Las Quince Letras Our restaurant experience in Mexico City left us nervous but Oaxacas food scene has revived my faith! Our guide for the day actually recommend this location for something that represented Oaxaca food on a high end scale. The restaurant was beautiful, the staff fluent in Spanish/English and very attentive. We got the Oaxacan plate 9.1/10 the meats on this dish were well marinated and the flavour lingered in your mouth! Red mole enchilada was my favourite part as it was just packed with flavour, and the stuffed chile was out of this world. We had to get the indigenous mole trio of course! 8.2/10 Big fan of the mole rojo, was seasoned beautifully and I could eat it all day. Other moles weren’t my cup of tea but you’re never gonna like everything and that’s okay. Definitely worth the price.
Spencer F — Google review
First off service was excellent, our waiter was friendly and attentive. The ambiance was also nice for a rooftop dinner at night, so kudos to them for nailing that part. But it pains me to say the food was a letdown and my family found their food underwhelming as well. I personally got a fish dish (I know Oaxaca isn't exactly known for their seafood but after eating so much meat throughout my stay, I wanted something on the lighter side) and while the sauce was okay, it couldn't mask how overcooked the fish was. My family all got different types of mole dishes and said it was their least favorite mole they've tried on this whole trip and some of their proteins were tough and chewy. None of the moles really stood out and were on the bland side. Also the desserts we ordered felt very basic and unremarkable. I did like the Chile de agua a la vinegreta, a cold, refreshing small dish with a good balance of acidity, spice, and savoryness. The Octopus I tried was decent as well. Hopefully it was just an off night for the kitchen staff, but I wouldn't recommend this place based on the food.

Wow! On my first night visiting Oaxaca, I was meandering and just was looking at my maps to see some restaurants— to be quite honest I missed the one I was looking for but happy to report I stumbled upon this restaurant instead. Please forgive me, I cannot remember his full name, but my waiter, whose name started with an E, was absolutely amazing. He encouraged me and helped me with my Spanish, but quickly stepped in with English if I was struggling. He was kind and attentive, and made many wonderful suggestions! Also— i was very chilly and he offered me a shawl. My meal was absolutely fantastic. I cannot remember the name of the soup— but it was brothy, full Of cilantro, corn, onion and tortilla. Absolutely amazing, I could eat this every day forever. The guacamole that was served with my entree was some of the best I’ve ever tasted! My cocktail was delicious, and entertaining— cinnamon was burnt tableside for some aromatics. I really enjoyed this meal, and the service was outstanding. Gracias!
Allison K — Google review
I went at a slightly off hour so the restaurant was only 40% full. Originally they let me choose my table in the pretty courtyard area but shortly after I sat they asked me to move tables because they wanted to sweep that area. Uggggh, ok... I moved but then realized they'd shoved me in a dark corner by a very busy service door. After they were done sweeping I insisted on moving back to my original table. Awkward and annoying but let's move on to the food. I ordered the trio of moles and each came with a different protein. The pork (mole coloradito) and chicken (mole negro) were horribly dry and tough. Just because your covering something in sauce doesn't mean it's ok to cook proteins that badly. Even the flavor of those 2 moles was pretty lackluster compared to the others I've tried during my month-long stay in Oaxaca. When I mentioned the dry meat to the waiter he tried to mansplain to me that that's just how it is when cooking pure proteins. Nope. The 3rd mole, almenda with beef was pretty good though and the meat was tender. Especially at this price, I would not recommend this restaurant.
Amanda N — Google review
The trio mole was spectacular! Do reserve a table beforehand or else be prepared to wait a few hours to get a table. Service is slow - roughly 40 minutes after being seated until the dishes arrive. Yet, worth the wait!
Kanyanat P — Google review
Very nice atmosphere and well kept and clean place . The staff were friendly and polite. I loved the grasshopper wrapped in cheese as an appetizer. The main plates however were all disappointing. The dark mole was extremely thick and rich. Too much to enjoy that. The other two mole plates were ok. My grilled fish had very nice tomato sauce, the banana as part of the plate surprised me positively. However the actual fish didn't taste much and it was a bit too grilled for me. The beef and pork mixed plate had extremely juicy and tender carne de res, but the rest was average. The tongue plate in caper sauce was good. It was a nice dinner, however to have been awarded by Michelin team (NOT STARRED) I was expecting more. Prices were 500 each.

Excellent food, real change from Mexican corn based meals! Great quality meat, burgers are small but very good and priced accordingly. Quick service and very fairly priced. Only slight downside is it isn’t very easy to know what beers are on tap at the (seemingly linked) brewery…I would want a description, ABV etc…

AMAZING food. Would recommend. The hot cocoa here is very well done with such a rich flavor. The eggs here are PERFECTLY done and they are not too hard and not undercooked so that it identifies as a piece of slime as I've found in some other places... this place makes you feel right at home but with better food.

Amazing burgers, very tasty. They are quite small, but for a fair price. You can try different variations to make you full. I especially loved the blue cheese option, but the bacon in the bacon burger was excellent. I also tried the craft beer and it was delicious as well. A little pricey, but worth it. The staff was friendly and the service was fast, even though the place was full. The interior is interesting, not exactly my cup of tea though. I am staying in sick and thought I’d order a bunch of stuff to feel good.. I’m from New York City and this place in some items are more expensive for size/quality, which is insane given they’re not paying close to the amount of rent as they do. The croissant w ham and cheese was old… the ginger shots had basically no ginger and just expensive shots of OJ…. the mix fruit w yogurt although having a good variety of fruit came with about 1.5 oz of yogurt and 5 chia seeds, no kidding. The only thing that was comparable to NYC priced and not more expensive… was the OJ and açai(which is about 13 usd$ as well).. coffee too if it wasn’t half split out… I can’t believe I spent 900mx for what I got. I get trying to make a few extra on tourists, but this felt like total robbery. The only place I felt this way in my 11 days here.

There are a lot of things on the menu that should be gluten free, but they aren't and I don't know why. Why do the salads contain gluten? Why does literally everything contain gluten even though it looks safe? We were only able to choose from 3 or so of the menu items and none of them sounded good to us. I got the pizza verde and it was not good, although my mom thought her meal was fine. We also tried to get one of the gluten free desserts and they were out of it. The absolutely best coffee shop in Oaxaca. Very friendly staff. A beautiful and tranquil spot to sit outside and enjoy delicious coffee and very yummy food. I love this place!

Had amazing food, very quick and good service from the nicest people. The head chef/owner came out to have a chat with us and was very welcoming and polite. We will definitively visit again!

The food and drinks are really good, there‘s a big variety of breakfast, brunch and lunch options at reasonable prices. But most of all: the family that runs it is so heartwarming, helping and friendly that you wanna get adopted right away!

My family and I went here twice for breakfast during our stay in Oaxaca and it was amazing! The food was delicious, presentation was gorgeous (see pictures), and the staff was helpful and patient with our slow Spanish. The coffee, tea, and chocolate drinks were great as well. Prices were extremely reasonable, especially compared to what we're used to in the United States, and there was a nice variety of foods, from more traditional Mexican to breakfast foods that you could find anywhere. This was such a cute place to have a meal or even just some drinks, and was a nice way to support the local economy. I would definitely recommend it - no complaints!

One of my favorite places I tried in Oaxaca. The menu is really varied, which sometimes makes me wary but everything my wife and I tried during our three breakfast visits were perfect and made with so much care and pride. The owner is very welcoming and talented.

This cafe is amazing, I ate here every day I was in Oaxaca. The food was delicious, and plated beautifully. They have lots of options for typical Oaxacan food, I especially enjoyed the cricket salsa and the salsa macha. Great coffee and pastries too! The warmth and friendliness of the staff and owner made me feel at home. Do yourself a favor and eat here when you are in Oaxaca, especially for breakfast!

Kiyo Café is a trendy spot in Oaxaca that's perfect for remote work or a leisurely brunch. The café offers a limited but delicious menu, featuring items like vegan mushroom toast and overnight oats. Visitors rave about the beet hummus and golden milk latte with oat milk. In addition to great coffee, the café also sells handmade crafts and clothes. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about their coffee beans, which results in delicate, fruity, and complex brews.
My absolute favorite coffee shop in the city! Not only did it have the best latte imo in the town the staff is so friendly especially Tania, the food is delicious, the pastries are great, the vibes are superb, I worked for a few hours there some days, they are outlets. High recommend!!!

Amazing service! Staff are super friendly and helpful (especially with my broken Spanish)! We’ve been in Oaxaca for 4 days and have been here every morning! Food and drinks are consistently a 10/10 for us and we recommend for anyone visiting Oaxaca to come here! Amazing outdoor seating
Hannah E — Google review
SO CUTE! This café is definitely on the trendy (and yes, slightly gentrified) side, but it’s such a lovely spot to relax. There’s a small boutique at the entrance with beautifully curated items — the prices are definitely high, but it’s still fun to browse while waiting for your coffee. I ordered a flat white and it was perfect! Smooth, strong, and beautifully balanced. I really appreciated that they offered soy milk, which can be hard to find in Oaxaca — more cafés need to take note! The backyard area is an absolute gem — peaceful, lush, and full of natural light. It feels like a little oasis tucked away from the busy streets. I also tried the cookie, which was the perfect texture: soft in the center with a slight crisp on the edges. If you’re looking for a calm, stylish café in Oaxaca with great coffee and good vibes, this place is a must-visit! Tip: grab a copy of the map they have in the store - it highlights some great local businesses.

Very much a vibe! Outstanding pastries, friendly service and awesome cold brew. The chilaquiles were 10/10. There is plenty of seating if you need to get some work done or just catch up with a friend. I picked up a bag of coffee beans to take home with me, which tasted great. The courtyard is really pretty, but the water fountain attracts a lot of mosquitoes.

This place is awesome. Seriously. We went to many cafes in Oaxaca and this was a true standout. The staff were kind and passionate, and the food was unbelievable. Don't get me started about how good their coffee was. Step away from the main streets in Oaxaca and come here.

This place is very beautiful and a little off the beaten path. It’s great to take a break or study (which I saw some patrons doing). Great trinkets to take home or even clothing. I ordered a golden milk latte and didn’t love it. Turmeric is tough to break down so it doesn’t clump and stick to the throat but I wanted to try it because this was the drink that wasn’t offered in other cafes I had visited during my time there. Glad I visited and ordered something but I wouldn’t return if in the area.

This café offers cozy and trendy vibes. The food is okay. The coffee MANZANITO BREW with a smooth cream on the top is quite nice. Some pastries also look good and attractive.

Very cute, trendy café with a relaxing atmosphere — a great place to take a break while exploring the city. The coffee is decent, not exceptional, but the cozy interior and the convenience (including free restrooms) make it a solid stop during your walk around Oaxaca.

Coquina Hua Xha is a small, family-run restaurant in Oaxaca known for its intimate and cozy atmosphere. Run by the delightful husband and wife team, Sarita and Antonio, this charming spot offers a unique take on traditional Mexican cuisine. The open-style kitchen allows guests to watch Sarita work her magic while Antonio greets and serves customers. Despite the small size of the restaurant, it stands out among the best breakfast spots in Oaxaca.
So good! It's small, but the food is amazing. Friendly service too. The quesadillas were delicious. You can have 1 for a snack or 2 to make it a meal. The green sauce is to die for! Also had the banana milkshake and pineapple tepache too.

Very cozy and authentic place! The black mole and iced chocolate are must-try’s. Highly recommend this little family-owned restaurant.
Maibrit H — Google review
It is a small family-run restaurant. I visited here twice during my stay in Oaxaca and had Tlayuda, Mole and Tostada. It took a little to serve after the order. However, if you taste Tlayuda and Tostada which are crisp and good smell tortilla, and the complex aroma of Mole, you will know that it was a necessary time Overall, the food is both simple and complex, and I feel the taste of the chef. It is probably supported by careful preparation. Payment is in cash only, menu is in Spanish but the staff support your order. The staff has a soft and gentle atmosphere, so please enjoy the wonderful food.
Ken N — Google review
In a small unassuming three table, family run restaurant is some of the best mole negro over chicken I've ever had in Oaxaca. It's subtle spicy warm heat that builds as you eat it. It's rich and complex, savory with sweet notes of chocolate, the sesame seeds add a little pops of nuttiness. It was served with a warm tortilla and a side of soft fluffy rice that soaked up the mole. We had the memela with champiñones and the empanada amarilla for appetizers, both great starters. Then ordered the tlayuda with beef and chapulines. It was warm and crispy, with thin sliced tomato, quesillo, and avocado. The chapulines, for me, were reminiscent of dried scallops with briny umami. The tepache rimmed with chili/salt was delicious! Lightly fermented and available in 4 flavors - we tried the tuna(cactus pear) and Pineapple. I highly recommend eating here if you find yourself in Oaxaca!!

Café Brújula is a popular coffee spot with several locations in Oaxaca. They are known for their fantastic espresso made from a Victoria Arduino hand-pull machine, as well as delicious pastries including handmade chocolate, cookies, and carrot cake. While some customers found the service to be very good and the coffee excellent, others mentioned that the employees were not particularly friendly.
Nestled in the Centro District of Oaxaca, right across from the stunning Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, Café Brújula is a true gem for coffee lovers and travelers alike. From the moment you step inside, you're welcomed by the café’s charming aesthetic—pink walls, beautifully designed black-and-white tile floors (featuring their logo!), and the irresistible aroma of freshly brewed espresso and baked goods. The baristas at Café Brújula were incredibly kind and patient, even as I fumbled through my very limited Spanish. Their warmth made the experience even more enjoyable. I ordered a Dirty Chai paired with a Limón Galleta, while my friend opted for their Chocolate and Pistachio Croissant—both of which were absolutely delicious. We grabbed a high-top table and enjoyed our drinks while looking out over the bustling main square. The combination of great coffee, excellent pastries, and the vibrant atmosphere of Oaxaca made for a perfect café experience. If you find yourself in Centro Oaxaca, I highly recommend stopping by Café Brújula—it’s the perfect spot to relax, recharge, and soak in the city’s charm.

I ordered 4 mango smoothies over a course of a 10 day trip and the first smoothie I had was delicious, thick, icy frozen. After that first one they were all like mango milk, not icy or frozen. So for that the consistency was not good. The cafe has a great atmosphere and the staff are quite friendly.
JP W — Google review
Edit - adding the 5th star because the barista was nice and courteous. Great great coffee. They actually have a fantastic espresso machine - Victoria Arduino - hand pull. And what an espresso! The pastries are also muy delicioso. They have handmade chocolate, cookies, and carrot cake that flew off the shelves. My only gripe would be that the employees were not really cool. I mean, they were helpful and it’s not their job to spread kindness, but in all my travels I love the cafes where the people will chat. But no real big deal. The drinks and pastries were divine. And the location is perfect.

Great little spot with a laid-back vibe and a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. I’ve enjoyed my coffee both in-house and to-go—definitely satisfying. The staff has always been friendly in my experience, despite a few salty reviews claiming otherwise. One reviewer was apparently shocked that you have to order at the counter—hilarious. Either they’ve never been to a café before or were expecting table service at a coffee shop. Wild times.

The colonial building housing the restaurant features beautiful decor and spacious seating, making it an excellent choice for senior travelers seeking a comfortable dining experience.
Absolutely stunning restaurant—easily our favourite so far on our Mexico trip. It has a true fine dining feel, with exceptional service (special thanks to Jose!), and a beautiful setting with a warm, elegant ambiance. The food was outstanding. We shared the Traditional Oaxacan Platter for two, which was packed with flavour—the tamales were the standout. For dessert, the six Artisan Oaxacan Sorbets were the perfect, refreshing way to end an unforgettable meal. We will for sure come again.

We were pleased to find ourselves downtown, enjoying the ambiance. The service provided was truly excellent, and we appreciated the attentive staff. Upon entering, we were greeted by the sound of live music and the sight of lush plants. It's certainly an enjoyable experience, especially since the staff is fluent in English. I would recommend making a reservation for convenience.

The food here was SO good! We stopped in a little after 5:30pm after an afternoon of wandering the beautiful Jalalatco neighborhood, absolutely famished. People kept stopping in front of the restaurant and taking photos, and we walked up and saw that it was because of the absolutely gorgeous Día de Muertos ofrenda. The interior of the restaurant was just lovely. We ordered our food immediately -- water, because it was a pretty warm day and we were getting dehydrated, as well as the 32 Ingredients Black Mole and the Almendrado Mole. Some bread was brought out for us. The little rolls with a creamy buttery soft cheese baked onto the top under the thin crust were my favorite. So good. The moles were lovely! My almond mole with roasted chicken had a mild, nearly imperceptible spice-- perfect for me. I wished the chicken had been boneless because it was hard to find all the little bones in there while it was swimming in mole. My partner's black mole was outstanding! I wished that was what I ordered, even though I enjoyed my meal too! It was a lovely meal, though service was a little spotty. They were running around and very busy. For the price, I had hoped for a tiny bit more attention, but it was within an acceptable limit. Definitely try this place, just be ready to wait a long while. :)
Danielle K — Google review
I had my first taste of Oaxaca’s iconic black mole, mole negro, at Catedral, and it was nothing short of extraordinary. As a solo traveler, I was welcomed with warmth and genuine hospitality by my server, Johnny, whose enthusiasm for sharing his favorite recommendations and the rich history of Oaxaca made me feel not just like a guest, but like a friend. The atmosphere is enchanting—romantic yet intimate—where even dining alone felt like a deliberate act of self-love. The rooftop opens up into a breathtaking atrium, the deep red walls radiating emotion, and the scents and flavors lingering in every bite. Each dish was a sensory journey, and the mole was a revelation—rich, complex, and deeply memorable. A surprising highlight? How they elevated a simple Topo Chico—served with fresh lemon and a salted rim, turning it into a refreshingly decadent treat. It’s the little touches that made this experience feel so special, like a gift from the city itself. I’d return in a heartbeat, and I’m forever grateful that a local pointed me in this direction. If you’re in Oaxaca, Catedral is a must—come hungry, leave with a full heart.
Kymberly F — Google review
The restaurant had a nice atmosphere and the food was great. I tried the chile en nogada, which was delicious. I also tried "nido de chapulines" which wasn't my thing, not because the they were grasshoppers, but because the sour seasoning made them kinda overwhelming, but as I later found out that's kind of how season them over there. The prices were reasonable, but my only complaint is that the brazilian lemonade was too expensive for what it was, especially for a mocktail. 190 pesos was too much for a relatively small lemonade frappe. There was a guy with a guitar playing some classic hits, which really added to the atmosphere. Overall, it was a pleasant experience.

Perfecto. Lovely little shop with all the various implements to make your favorite style, including Aeropress, Chemex and more. There only a few places to sit, so it would be hard to justify taking their limited space for more than half an hour or so, but in the meantime they hustle for anything you might want. The restaurant is a modest setting like being in someone’s home for dinner, very cozy and we were lucky enough to sit by the window getting a great view. The staff were very friendly and very patient with us while we spoke broken Spanish. (Thank you!!) Finally, the food!! It was so good! One of the most authentic restaurants in Oaxaca! It’s so good that even locals were expecting us to have eaten there when we spoke with them! The menu even included traditional items like Chicatanus, which is seasonal (June-July) but a little tricker to find (at least it was for us) for those more adventurous!

Went here to try manchamental and chichilo (both very hard to find), and it was incredible! The chichilo was duely somber, hearty, and mostly simple in flavor, with only very subtle complexity, and the vegitables and dough pieces complimented the tone of the dish brilliantly - enjoyable but not so pleasurable as to be inappropriate for a mourning family. The manchamantel was very lively, fruity, rich, bright, fun, and fairly spicy for a mole. And again, the other items in the dish complimented the mole brilliantly. The manchamantel is now my favorite of the 8 moles of Oaxaca, and the Chichilo is my significant other's favorite. The food was absolutely amazing, but do bear in mind, you will likely be waiting a while for your food. In my opinion though, it is well worth the wait! The decor is also fairly plain.

Absolutely loved our meal here! One of the best in Oaxaca and that's even comparing it to much fancier places with more accolades. Food tasted home made and the ambiance is casual, so the food took a while to come out, but worth it if you have time! Loved the Sopa de Conde and Mole Negro!

Extremely good moles! Ordered the 5 sampler. Look at other reviews for types. Best traditional mole I’ve had yet! Big recommendation to come here. The combo also comes with drinks which is nice. It’s quite pricy though - see my menu photo. The 5 mole combo with rice and 2 beverages is 650MX. Worth it though!

A quiet and sweet restaurant with some of the best moles I’ve ever had. The mole testing menu is a must try! My favorites were Coloradito, negro and rojo. The crema de chipolines is amazing. I loved the champurrado, the drink that I got which is a mix of corn and chocolate.

This is a great place for breakfast in Oaxaca Centro. Service is fast, efficient and personal. We came once and when we went back a few days later, the waiter not only recognized us and greeted us but he also remember details about our food options. So, service is exceptional. I had "huevos al gusto" which were pretty great. They came with a black bean refrito and a tortilla with red sauce. The red sauce was not great. The rest was pretty good. We didn't order chocolate but watched the waiter preparing it for the table next to ours. Next time we go (before leaving Oaxaca), we'll have that chocolate. Noise level is discreet and prices are very affordable.

Omar was our delightful and extremely professional server. He knows the menu and did not miss a thing providing above and beyond excellent service. We dined at 915am for breakfast each ordering vegetarian omelets, he orderAmericano coffee and I ordered a cappuccino. The omelet was extremely healthy with a nicely diced mix of Mexican summer squash, potatoes, & carrots that lacked seasoning! Plated beautifully and when adding salsa, which was pretty salty, helped the omelets! It is a pricier place. My only complaint is that the coffees should not be half the price of the meal. No included refills on the Americano (a black cup of coffee) was a bummer for him.

Nice ambiance with live music. Our waitress didn’t speak a word of English which is ox but she didn’t try to help us understand repeating the same words over and over very quickly. Even with our broken Spanish we usually are able to make it works. Not with Nactali. She was board and pushy when we didn’t go fast enough to order drinks or food. It was really too bad. The food was just ok but the red house wine was good. I would not recommend this restaurant as it is kind a pricy to have an ok food and a bad service.

Café Nuevo Mundo is an independent coffee roaster in Oaxaca City, renowned for its top-notch espresso. The café has two locations and is popular among coffee enthusiasts. While they excel in sweet drinks like frappuccinos, their traditional coffee options such as lattes and cold brews are not the best. In addition to great coffee, they offer a hearty breakfast at a good price. The cozy venue provides a welcoming atmosphere with attentive service and delicious food.
Great options for a light lunch at this cheery cafe. Our server didn’t smile or welcome us, but food arrived hot and as ordered. :) The chicken sandwich is tasty with fresh vegetables and tender and flavorful chicken. An updated take on beans-on-toast can’t be beat—a great option for vegetarians. Try the tejate drink—sweet and refreshing!

Good place to chill with English menus and friendly staff. Unfortunately my eggs were rather overcooked but my friends enjoyed their eggs with tiny grasshoppers! They have a good selection of fruity teas which I enjoyed.

Stopped by this place at the recommendation of my airbnb host- very happy we did. The food was absolutely delicious! The venue is hidden amongst a row of colorful buildings and is very inviting- the only downside is the inside is sort of small/cozy & there's no terrace seating. It's very clean inside, and the servers were very attentive- everything we ordered came quickly and was very delicious. They have wifi on site too, so you can sit and work if you need to. Definitely make this a stop on your food tour, you won't be disappointed.

They are just across from our apartment. What a fortune! Their coffee (espresso and cappuccino) is excellent, as well as their empenadas de mole, and cornices. We loved the huevos Zapotecos and the huevos Motuleños. Highly recommend!

This little cafe serves a hearty breakfast at a good price. The coffee was very good and so was the chocolate. The servers are very nice and helpful. We sat and hung out after our meal because I work remotely and had to get some things done prior to exploring the town and they were very nice about it. I would recommend this cafe to anyone looking for both a traditional American eggs, bacon, and toast as well as Mexican breakfast items. We are heading back tomorrow for round two.

I ordered the burrito breakfast and tejate. Both were good - I was a little surprised with the taste of tejate as I didn't really know what it was and what to expect but for me it was one of those drinks you appreciate more the more you drink it. I was pleased with the experience in general, the place was clean and had good service + wifi. The only thing is the setup is a little weird in my opinion and so it's not the best atmosphere.

Recommended to me by a few locals and it was truly good. Service was a tad slow as so many guests but was worth the wait. Also nice location - 5 minutes to zocalo and 2 minutes to museums.
Molly W — Google review
Clean, very attentive good service. However that’s kind of where it stops being above average. Ordered the Jamón Serrano baguette, limonada natural and a brownie to go. While the read was fresh it was chewy which while not great for the Serrano it was everything else that buried any hint of the barely there in quantity Jamón Serrano. The Tomato was oversized but again fresh, same for the red onion and lettuce. There also was simply a lopsided portion of cheese to Jamón Serrano ratio that caused this to fail. The chopped fried potatoes were heavy on the salt as well. Then come the brownie- it’s a cake like brownie which we’ve all had at some point but it was very dry and only came with a white dusting on top which made things worse. Something moist to top would be a much better choice for this block of cake. It’s too bad I seem to remote this place in a better light two years ago.

Have been here a few times. Really good option for sea food. The specials are delicious as well as the cocteles. Prices are in line with other similar restaurants. The inside is a big patio with a cover for the sun. Rain may be uncomfortable as we have to move to another table while we were dining. Our waiter was resourceful. We may be go back again.

Only went for margaritas but this place specializes in fresh seafood (which I love but it was too early for dinner) and has a large chimea-shaped clay oven with fire where they bake/cook alot of the seafood. Magical tranquil & relaxed atmosphere. Servers said it gets busy at night.

Exceptional. Sunday lunch. Not crowded at all. Cool tree canopy while 89F outside. Excellent personalized service (Tomas). The food is eclectic with no fuss (I tried the cockroaches of the sea) Not cheap but worth it. Only negative is that it is far from the center (a blessing?)

Great spot for drinks with an amazing view. Cocktails were delicious (pina and cilantro). Ordered the beef tacos as an appetiser and were also amazing. Full menu was a bit westernised for us so we went elsewhere for an authentic dinner, but highly recommended here for a drink & snack! Service friendly but slow as has been consistent across Mexico!

Great place. Great view. Great food. This place has great views all around. Lots of activity down below on the streets, Mountain Views all around. Great cocktails. The only thing I didn’t like was an “old fashion” drink I ordered. Maybe just not their strength but other than that, plenty of seating with a view.

Excellent experience—excellent meal and fantastic rooftop view. The mezcalines (mezcal cocktails) are creative and tasty, the salad with shrimp and coconut dressing and the arrachera (skirt steak) with hoja santa (herbal leaf) pesto were outstanding. Cafe Los Cuiles is a charming coffeehouse located in Plaza los Virgenes at the heart of Oaxaca. It's known for its colorful artworks and courtyard seating where Spanish classes are held three times a week. Visitors can enjoy a 30 peso latte while taking in the lively atmosphere.
I’ve eaten here three times over the last two weeks and the food quality and service has been great each time. I had their vegetable omelette for breakfast and it was quite good and reasonably priced. The other two times I had salads and a tostada. Also reasonably priced, visually appealing and tasty. The courtyard setting with water fountain is another reason to visit. One of my favorite places to eat in Oaxaca!

The rooftop setting adds to the charm of enjoying traditional Mexican cuisine such as the flavorful chiles en nogada topped with pomegranate seeds.
We loved our meal here. I had the veggie chilli relleno and it was so delicious. Almost Moroccan in flavour with cinnamon/fruits inside. Wrapped in egg and fried (looks like batter but more like eggy bread). Very different to the usual Mexican flavours. Yum!

4.7 for food 4.9 for service and atmosphere. The food was delicious and high quality, the service always excellent and the prices are reasonable. They have a lunch special for $145 pesos that includes a drink, first course and main course. I had the chicken soup that was incredibly flavorful and full of chicken and vegetables. The main courses are chicken or pork mole, or grilled skirt steak. The juice was papaya and lemon. We were very happy with our experience. There is a nice terrace on the roof and opens in the afternoon.

Wow! Super cute artsy place with comprehensive breakfast menu. The tacos dorados with mushrooms and pumpkin flower topped with guac were beyond delicious and my husband's huevos rancheros were solid! The beans are vegetarian here which always makes us happy. Luis, our server, was attentive and friendly. We will definitely return.

This place was quite lovely. I really appreciated all the artesanal decorations and furniture they had in here, it was entertaining to look at the masks on the wall and guess the prices of them. Only downside was that there's only one restroom, and almost everyone from our group needed to go at the end so it just became a line, hehe. The service was very easy to work with and one of the waiters remembered exactly what I ordered, despite the fact that he was serving a group of 13! So I thought that was very impressive. I ordered huevos rancheros with verde sauce and a horchata--I really liked the horchata! The huevos rancheros was pretty decent, I just sometimes forget that I'm not a fan of drenched eggs and tortilla, but otherwise it was good.

Very good chile nogada and tlayucas. Also hot choco con leche is very good. Good place to enjoy breakfast and lunch.
L. L — Google review
I had a chile enogado here about 9 years ago and it was excellent-- I rated it 5. I have used it as a measure for years. Not so for my visit a few days ago. The chile enogado wasn't terrible. It was big, but the quality was mediocre. The enogado sauce was silky and good, but the pork relleno was lack lustre and low on flavor. The ingredients (fruit, nut, etc.) that I loved last time were sadly missing. It came with rice or plain spaghetti. Meh. The salad was huge and fresh, but not especially tasty. A few months ago, I came for a menu of the day. Plenty of food and it was attractive, but it lacked quality/flavor. Sadly, I rank el Tío Güero mediocre (not bad, just not good) and I won't be returning even though I live within walking distance and love the name...
Jay G — Google review
Very good food. I had the mole manchamantelas, and it was quite flavorful. At one point, a kitchen staff was walking by and noticed me wiping my shirt, and he quoted the name of the mole which made me laugh. Service was really good. It has a very relaxed atmosphere. Tortillas seemed like they had been made in-house.

My partner and l went to Cafe Alex today for brunch/ lunch. Most menu items were 130-140 pesos. Coffee was offered, and a basket of rolls (assorted) were brought to the table. Once we ordered, juice was brought. The food was alright, but not fantastic. The potatoes that came on my partners plate were particularly awful (tasted like they were leftover from the night before, hard and lukewarm at best.) We probably won’t return. It seemed a bit pricey, but the breads, juice and coffee included in the price was a real bonus, making it feel worth the cost.

Every place is Oaxaca was good besides this one. My boyfriend and I were very hungry and this place had many open tables, so we decided to try. The service was very good, the waiter was nice and polite. But the food was horrible. Any street food is so much better. We got this pizza and soup. The soup was okay, but barely had any flavor. But this pizza has to be one of the worst pizzas we have ever had. The dough wasn’t thoroughly cooked, the cheese was very cheap and I don’t think we have to say anything about the sausages, you can see in the photo how they look… Maybe they have other dishes that are better but you should get pizza somewhere else

The rooftop ambiance was really nice. Service was great as well. Sadly the food, was a little basic. For instance the parrilla had sausage with nice flavor. The chapulín was tasty as well. However my parties other meals, three cheese pasta, and steak were very much lacking. The pasta had no flavor, and the steak was raw and had to be sent back. We were really impressed with this place! I had made reservations at a different restaurant also in Centro for my fiance's birthday. We get to th restaurant to find out not only did they not have our reservation, but the kitchen was closed that night. Sooo... I see the reviews for La Azotea and we chose to have dinner there. We were quickly sat by the edge of the patio and had a wonderful view of the church. We ordered drinks: a mojito and a pasíon mezcalera. The mojito was okay, but the passion fruit drink was really good. I ordered the pulpo y risotto al funghi. Ohmigosh it was absolutely delicious! And a huge portion!! Definitely recommend. My fiance ordered the filet mignon. It was two good sized portions of a filet wrapped in some sort of pork (almost like bacon wrapped, but it wasn't bacon) on a bed of mashed potatoes. This was also a huge portion and the meat was cooked to perfection (between rare and medium rare). It was so good that he wanted to have it again the next night. It was my fiance's birthday and they brought him a nice dessert and the saxophone player from the band played for him. They made it so special! We also witnessed fireworks and a parade right from the terrace. Between the food, the excellent service, and the view, It was such a perfect evening!

If you're looking for a delightful culinary experience during your stay at the local hostel, Sabor Antiguo is a must-visit. This charming eatery specializes in traditional handmade dishes that truly capture the essence of local flavors. While service can be a tad slow at peak times due to its two dining areas, the wait is often worth it as you savor their delicious offerings.
We've had several events at this restaurant, and the food is consistently cooked with fresh, local produce. Their meat, poultry, pork, and cheese all come from local farmers' markets. What truly makes this place special is their adherence to ancient, traditional recipes. They cook nearly everything from scratch, closely supervised by the owner and founder, Mrs. Jacqueline. Your taste buds will certainly bear witness to this! It's not a fancy spot, but it's a great place to taste original Oaxacan food.

My place to visit during my stays at the local hostel. Visited area in 2018 and came back again twice on my recent visit. Food is all hand made traditional way, but service is a bit slow depending on the time since there are 2 dinning areas. Cost is right compared to Nov 20 market for under 150 to 200 pesos depending on mea.Overall a place to try if around.

At first I was a bit frustrated about the wait time BUT when I got my food I realized it was worth the wait. A whole new take on chilaquiles. Amazing!!

Café Arabia is a popular spot in Oaxaca known for its wonderful atmosphere and proximity to a park. While it may not stand out among the many cafes in the area, it is a good solid choice, especially for breakfast. The cafe opens early and offers tasty food, making it a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Although some have criticized its tortillas, the overall dining experience seems to be enjoyable.
I love this spot for breakfast, they’re open early and it always tasty.

Service is terrible, they took so long to attend us when there were only 2 other people in the restaurant. Would not recommend the food at all, just melted cheese on bread with little meat. Overpriced as hell, double the price for better food you can get in the city. 2/10 would not recommend to anyone.
Tublet — Google review
Absolutely horrible. I used to come every few months. They had the best lemon meringue pie. It was wonderful. Now it is horrible. Crust is soggy Graham cracker. Filling has no taste of lemon. Made with lechero ( condensed milk). Meringue was horrible. Too bad. They had great lemon meringue pie. NO MORE!!!

The best espresso in Oaxaca! The fruit plate is beautiful and delicious. The seating is very comfortable. There is no need to go anywhere else.
Ian R — Google review
Don't judge a restaurant by its tortillas. Well, maybe if they're incredibly good tortillas it could be a safe bet, but if they're the machine-made cardboard flapjacks that work better than a serviette for de-saucing one's beard, you might be mistaken if you think the rest of the food will be lackluster. Tonight at Café Arabia i ordered two dishes and a tea, and was delighted with all of it, even asking for a second helping of the aforesaid culinary travesty when the sauce proved too much for my napkin. (I'm impervious to chagrin so i will tell you that in fact i actually ate both tuppers of tortillas, banal though these were. In my ravening i had to pay particular attention so as not to consume the plastic, nor the serviette, so little did the flavour of that victual recommend itself.) Savory Crepes with Mushrooms, Gouda, and a Cilantro glaze: These were slightly thicker than the crepes my family made on the direction of a french acquaintance, much darker due to some whole wheat flour, and just as loaded with all the right sort of detritus one would expect. Yellow sweet bell peppers figured prominently alongside the title ingredients. The gouda i was skeptical about--not because i detected anything awry--but because i've seen the processed 'cheese product' version not far from the real deal Gouda in the chic mega grocery chain here. And i'm too much of a hillbilly to honestly dislike the salty, creamy umami of the imposter, so i cannot say which it was at Arabia. The cheese in the Cheese in Red Sauce dish was unusually tasty. ...Granted my list of cheeses i don't like includes only one cheese out of the thousand i've tried. Be that as it may, the cheese had a fairly intense aroma, which is a difficult accomplishment when one is swimming in tomato sauce. I hear that's what people do to quench the stench after Pooch has been skunked, so this curd instantly gained my respect. No bland white stuff with added salt -- no no! Now about that sauce. If i had to guess i would say they use canned tomatoes. I thought i detected that taste canned tomatoes give, but we've been through this already about my palate; don't trust it. The more compelling evidence is the deep red colour, which i doubted could be the result of using the fresh (greenhouse-grown) tomatoes commonly available around here in November. Perhaps a real food critic should investigate my claims and wild speculations. If they're not picky about tortillas, they'll probably enjoy the experience. The service was superb. Nearly a full house and the young men were all moving smartly, bringing everything out so quickly i half expected the table top to melt. And the tea. What a selection! I chose a Rooibos chai. As the description said it was only (very) lightly spiced, so in a flash i was neatly transported back to South Africa, without even having to suffer the indignity of the human cattle chute in an airport.

Trigo Verde Sucursal Trujano is a small plant-based eatery in Oaxaca that also houses a health food store. This restaurant offers affordable meals, priced at $60-100 pesos or less. While the menu does not explicitly indicate vegan options, patrons can inquire before placing their orders. The food is both delectable and reasonably priced, making it an attractive choice for vegetarians and vegans alike.
This place is a hidden gem in Oaxaca where finding vegetarian meals is very difficult. The atmosphere is very cool, the menu is spectacular with lots of vegan and vegetarian choices, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The prices are amazing, especially when you taste the delicious food. This place is highly recommended by myself and my husband. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will return again soon on this trip.

This place is amazing! Recommended by the hostel I am volunteering at, I'm so happy I found it! I tried almost everything from the menu and I think I might become a vegetarian hehe. My absolute favorite is Baguette, it's mouthwatering and the bread is delicious which is a rare find in Mexico in general. I recommend this place with all my heart ❤️🌿🫶
Aleksandr V — Google review
They have many interesting food choices, it was difficult to choose what to order! The menu is completely vegetarian, with many vegan option and more than can be adapted to be vegan. Prices are affordable and they also have a cheap daily menu. I got a tlayuda and a smoothie and they were great! The staff is very friendly and attentive. The area is not the best, it’s fine during the day but probably I wouldn’t go waking in the evening.
Chiara — Google review
The food was delicious! Everything is vegetarian and most of it vegan or available as vegan option. The staff is super welcoming and friendly. Best fruit juice I had in a long time (pineapple, strawberry, banana and ginger - so yummy). I will definitely eat there again!
Monique S — Google review
Very tasty and cheap vegetarian restaurant. Visited one lunch time and had the set menu but the vegan option. As a veggie place they are aware of what vegan means (no cheese/dairy or egg contrary to what some omnivorous places think) so were able to adapt the menu for me. Unfortunately this meant I couldn’t have the dessert but it still worked out a bargain for a decently filling lunch ($65). Would recommend stopping in for lunch if you’re in Oaxaca!

Amazing restaurant with exceptional variety vegetarian food. Ticks all the boxes with excellent quality, presentation, freshness, taste and fair price. Visited the place two days in a row and Trigo Verde still packs quite a punch up it's sleeve. Been in Mexico for almost a month thus far; and this has been among the best finds as far as vegetarian restaurants and overall restaurants are concerned. A big thumps up! 5 stars for a reason!

Brisas Del Mar is a local-owned restaurant with a long-standing reputation, offering an extensive menu and fair prices. It's recommended for breakfast or early lunch due to its amazing ocean view, but dinner service is also available. The cafe serves house cinnamon-infused coffee and delicious dishes like green chilaquiles with scrambled eggs and molletes. However, it's suggested to avoid visiting later in the day due to the sun exposure.

STUNNING VIEWS!! I came here early in the morning one day and had the most amazing enchiladas oaxaqueños with a piña agua fresca, great start to the day with a view of the ocean 🤩🌊

This is one of my forever recommendations. This place is owned by locals, it's been on business for a very long time. The view is amazing. I do recommend it for breakfast or early lunch, you might want to avoid it later because of the sun. They start really early in the morning and they also have dinner service. They have a very extense variety of dishes and they keep the prices fair. Don't miss this amazing spot.

Gorgeous way to start the day! Kind, quick service and lovely view of the ocean. We loved the Cafe de Olla (house cinnamon infused coffee). We got the green chilaquiles with scrambled eggs-great flavor and generous portion (could have easily shared). We also tried the molletes-not bad but we’ve had better while in Mexico. Would definitely come again next trip. *jf coming from Zicatela beach, it’s also a nice little hike up a large flight of stairs to get your morning workout in! 😬

Located near Parque el Llano, Okasa is a fantastic lunch spot with a diverse menu that includes delicious vegan options such as soup, fried vegetables, rice, and beans. This popular eatery attracts locals for its outstanding offerings and vibrant atmosphere. The fresh juices and delectable Mexican dishes are particularly noteworthy, accompanied by an array of delightful fruits. The attentive waiter adds to the enjoyable dining experience. Unlike many establishments in Mexico, Okasa manages to maintain appropriate background music levels.
I come to Oaxaca often, and when I do my family and I always stop by Okasa. They have great food and service. Love their waffles! Their sparking lemonade is one of the best. On top of the great food their prices are economical.

Amazing place to eat when visiting Oaxaca! This place was suggested by our guide, but we all loved it so much we visited again the next day! Service is friendly and prompt. The food choices vary greatly, including a local speciality of crickets. The meals are well-priced and very large - breakfast will definitely keep you going until late afternoon. I recommend the waffles or spinach omelette.

A pretty local and traditional kitchen in north central Oaxaca. They don’t have a menu, they just serve a couple of options for different meals throughout the day. My friend and I chose the chicken meal. They gave us horchata and consommé to begin, both of which were very nice and not overly sweet or seasoned. The chicken has a sauce with pineapple, which was interesting. I liked it more than my friend. The salad was delicious! Also, they served a habanero salsa that was perfectly balanced. And this two-course meal for two only cost us 185 MXN (~$10.20 USD)! It’s definitely a good place to have a low-key lunch or dinner that doesn’t break the bank.

We had a perfect brunch. The place was packed with locals, for good reason. The fresh juices, the yummy Mexican dishes, the fruit that just shows up... Everything was amazing. The waiter was very kind too. Music was not too loud, which is a rarity in Mexico!

The restaurant EtnoFood specializes in Zapotec cuisine and mostly offers vegan dishes.
Great vegan food and helpful and friendly staff. We had guacamole, sweet potato sandwich and roasted squash dish with hummus, which was something different and I enjoyed it very much! For drinks I loved the hibiscus foam. They also have nice desserts and hot chocolate of the region. 10/10 would recommend this place and will be coming back :)

food was tasty, but a little bland/plain in my humble opinion. just mole mushrooms ok the bread for the sandwich… i ended up putting the Macha, vinegar potatoes, and Salad that i ordered on it and then it was an interesting experience. i asked to sub corn tortillas for the bread n they couldnt (?) the staff seemed pretty indifferent to me.. the arugula greens were yellowing n swimming in oil…. again. all tasty but i felt it was lacking the concept of ‘food lab’ like touch. prices were decent for quality and portions… definitely cheaper places to eat but you pay for an alternative experience here.

We had a cooking workshop with Etnofood, had the best time! It’s a very nice way to learn about the local culture and the cuisine. First we visited a local market to buy some fresh food and vegetables. After that with the guidance of our friendly host we made several dishes (including mole, salsas, quesadillas) and had an amazing dinner in the end. Loved the whole experience!

Excellent salsa making class with Brian and Wendy - we learned so much on the market tour and about the salsa-making process. We made 5 different salsas with recipes to take home, and had a feast of quesadillas, tuna juice and chapulines to eat with the salsa we made. They made us feel so welcome, definitely recommend this class on your trip to Oaxaca!

An unforgettable culinary experience! As a vegan of several years, visiting this vegan restaurant in Oaxaca was a delightful surprise that exceeded all my expectations. From the moment I walked in, I was captivated by the continuous and warm beauty of the place. The ambiance is simply charming, creating a cozy environment that invites you to relax and savor the food. The kindness of the people working there further enhances the experience. Juan, our server, was exquisite in his attention. I don't know who he is, but he clearly loves what he does, and his passion is reflected in every detail, from his recommendations to his willingness to explain each dish. In addition to offering an exceptional gastronomic experience, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this vegan restaurant is also a social project. It's inspiring to see how such a wonderful place not only cares about providing delicious vegan food but also positively contributes to the community. As for the food, I tried several dishes, but the chocolates and mezcals stood out especially. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was a work of art in itself. The creativity in combining ingredients and the quality of the products used truly showcased the chef's skill and the restaurant's commitment to offering the best. I highly recommend to all food lovers, vegans or not, to visit this place when in Oaxaca. Not only will you enjoy a unique culinary experience, but you will also contribute to a social project worth supporting. This restaurant has left a lasting impression on me, and I'm confident that anyone who visits will also be enchanted. A culinary gem in the heart of Oaxaca!

Unfortunately, we were not impressed. We‘re vegans and always looking for tasty options, but were quite disappointed in the tasteless food and small portions served. The drinks were delicious, but the food was just really not good - as if they didn‘t believe in vegan + healthy + packed with taste. We‘re quite sad about this since it looks like a cool place and project we‘d love to support, and the staff was also lovely.

Our mole cooking class with Victor was amazing! I loved how we got to go with him to the market, select ingredients and received so much information about each ingredient and historical context. Throughout the class he also did a great job engaging each participant and has us work together in a way that felt communal and not awkward when you meet new people/strangers. The class flowed so smoothly and casually that it felt like we were cooking at home in his own kitchen. I've taken many cooking classes before and they sometimes can feel rigid with instruction on how to cook "properly" but Victor created such a warm environment with instructions that allowed all of us to prep and cook in ways we felt comfortable with.

Casa Blasón is a haven for coffee enthusiasts, offering a selection of seven different roasts that allow connoisseurs to savor the nuanced flavors of Mexican coffee. The beans are carefully sourced from the three major coffee-producing states in Mexico: Veracruz, Chiapas, and Oaxaca.
Excellent coffee at unbeatable prices, truly the lowest I’ve seen in this town. Good quality for the price!

Overall, I think this is the best cafe in Oaxaca. Nowhere else compares in terms of price and quantity. Yes, the coffee is not as unique or as powerful as other places, such as Kiyo, but for the price and for the comfort of the place, Casa Blasón is the winner. Sometimes the music is a bit too loud and annoying, but that would be my only complaint. PS It also has a great map of all the coffee growing regions on the wall.
