Specialty Museums
The Museum of Cultures of Oaxaca, Santo Domingo is a cultural center located in a 17th-century convent. It houses archaeological artifacts, ancient books, Spanish colonial artifacts, and artwork. The museum offers exhibits spanning various time periods such as ancient history, the Middle Ages, BC era, and prehistoric times. Visitors can also explore maritime history exhibitions and traditional wear and handicraft works. The central courtyard with a fountain provides an impressive backdrop for photos.
It was such a wow moment walking into the space; the exterior walls keep this beautiful place so hidden! We came here on a Sunday in June, it just so happens to be not busy. The downside is they don’t allow strollers so if you are bringing your baby, leave the stroller at home😫. They have more new exhibitions as well as a lot of artefacts. There are so many rooms to explore and the architecture speaks for itself. You can also go upstairs to get a wonderful view of the square 🤩
Maria G — Google review
Wow, the museum itself does a great job telling local history from the first civilizations up to the modern era. However, the grounds are stunning. The building itself has been beautifully restored and is adjacent to a lovely garden. I would consider this a can’t-miss if visiting Oaxaca.
Darren G — Google review
A MUST GO! The price was $100 MXN, you are able to pay with cash or card, it will take a few hours to see the place, but you have restrooms and places where you can sit, all the salon have all the info that you’ll need to understand about what they are talking about, be patient, the staff is really friendly to give you instructions and to help you. Please be respectful and enjoy this awesome museum.
Any B — Google review
The museum is housed in the former Convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán in Oaxaca de Juárez. It features 14 permanent exhibition halls and a number of thematic rooms, presenting over 10,000 years of history of the state of Oaxaca—from the earliest pre-Hispanic settlements and cultural florescence, through the Spanish conquest and colonial period, to modern day indigenous communal life. Highlights include the treasure from Tomb 7 at Monte Albán (gold, turquoise, coral), and displays on crafts, ethnography and contemporary indigenous culture. The building is architectural masterpiece of the viceregal era and forms part of a larger cultural complex that includes the ethnobotanical garden and a historic library.

Get inside!!! I might also turn into Christian if I see this 400 years ago. This is most beautiful Church I’ve seen during my 1-month stay in Mexico. They had the best history kept alive and the story in Oaxaca Valley was truly inspiring!
Strayn W — Google review
A beautiful museum built within church grounds, it offers a detailed history of Oaxaca during the prehispanic, colonial and early 20th century times. There's a cover charge of $100 pesos however, Mexican citizens are allowed to enter at no cost, much show a valid voter ID or passport.
JL ( — Google review
Musem is good to visit and spend 1-2 hour of exploring exibits. First floor offers some ceramic and wood art from local people and I think they change it from time to time. Second floor offers exibits from history, sadly there is no english translation under each exibit. Good thing price is 100 pessos per person. They charge extra 64 pessos if you have professional camera (they consider gopro as professional device). Architecture of this colonial building is fantastic, views are spectacular so you can enjoy here for several hours if you are not in hurry. Fountain in the middle is working and nice to see water splashing.
Hrvoje P — Google review
Beautiful architecture, detailed exhibits and beautiful vistas to the surrounding city and mountains. We got hungry halfway through but ended up staying for another 45 minutes because there were that many good exhibits.

Gardens
Jardín Etnobotánico de Oaxaca, also known as Oaxaca Ethnological Gardens, is a meticulously curated space that showcases the rich diversity of local plant life in Oaxaca. Designed by artist Francisco Toledo and opened in 1998, this garden spans over 2.3 hectares and features hundreds of native plant species representing the flora of Oaxaca State.
The Jardín Etnobotánico de Oaxaca is a beautiful and tranquil garden that offers a unique glimpse into the region's rich botanical and cultural heritage. Established to showcase the diverse native plants and their traditional uses by indigenous communities, the garden serves as both a botanical and ethnobotanical educational space. There was no entrance fee, which makes it an excellent value, though please note that there are no guided tours available at the moment—I'm not sure if this is a recent change. We spent about 30 minutes exploring the gardens, and it was a very enjoyable experience. The scenery is stunning, and considering it’s free, it’s definitely worth the time. Parking nearby was convenient as well. Overall, a lovely spot to relax, learn about Oaxaca’s indigenous flora, and appreciate nature.
Justin V — Google review
Not the traditional botanical garden experience - few labeled plants, wasn’t able to access most of the garden. Tours leave every 30 minutes, but mainly go to the Mexican fence post cactus area with Opuntia, give no interpretation and then run you out. Maybe it was an off day/season, but I definitely wouldn’t come here if your desire is to learn the plants of Oaxaca unless you set up a more formal botanical tour some how. Seems little active research going on as well
Damon T — Google review
Only a small part of the garden is open for visit, but the view is good. Follow the time that a guide is assigned, you may be able to discover a little bit of this garden which takes around 20 minutes. The tour only serves in Spanish.
SH W — Google review
Pretty space to walk around. It’s FREE! :) We did a 30min guided tour and unfortunately they didn’t let us stay to take photos long enough, felt very rushed. So if possible I’d recommend to walk around on your own (I dont know if they allow that though). The tour starts every 30 mins and is limited to around 30 people. If you dont want to wait in line until they let the next group in I recommend getting 10-15 mins earlier and get in line. :)
Darya — Google review
Very pretty gardens in the middle of the city. They don’t allow self-guided tours, so make sure to arrive 30 mintues before the tour time as capacity is limited. My tour did not have a ticket price, nor did the guide explain any of the plants. We had plenty of time (almost too much time) to wander and take pictures.
Chris B — Google review
Excellente! Heart of Travel knows so well how to guide travelers to the beat hands on experiences, comida, mezcal, and of course the heart of Oaxaca - the generous, proud, and gentle people. Ask for Diego as your guide and you will have only good memories, the best education and the most fun. I plan to return at least once a year.
Ronda N — Google review
The garden is beautiful - what a pity that it’s not properly run. The hours at the fence aren’t followed through and the personnel is not very helpful. They ‘take you’ around but don’t explain anything about the different plant species or whatsoever. It would be better if they ask a small entry fee and run the place properly with a guide in both spanish and english that enjoys telling people about the beautiful garden :)
Letizia T — Google review
Free entry to a beautifully curated garden. Access only on specific days and hours. I was especially interested in this site, because on the roof of the nearby monastery a key scene of the 1983 movie "Under Fire" has been filmed (however, I couldn´t confirm this during the visit).

Zócalo Oaxaca, also known as Plaza de la Constitucion de Oaxaca, is a bustling public square at the historical center of downtown Oaxaca. Surrounded by historic buildings and vibrant cafes, it's a prime spot for people-watching and picking up souvenirs. The square is shaded by leafy trees, providing a relaxing place to cool off in the shade.
We visited the park on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The busiest day was Sunday. There was live music playing. And, many families gathered to enjoy the music. There are also several restaurants and vendors on the grounds. Also, there were a few parades that ended in the square... lively performances with beautiful costumes!
Erica R — Google review
A great place to spend some time. There are many shops around, great places to eat and things to explore. I also really enjoyed the live music, the dancing, and the vibrant colors.
Lindsay B — Google review
Amazing town. Beautiful, colorful, friendly, great restaurants, street vendors throughout the day with all kinds of snacks, food, and treats. We got to witness live music almost every day, and ambience was relaxing yet exciting. Very safe place to walk all round the area at any time of the day.

There are two parks next to each other. Walk around, it's safe. Take Alcalá street to Templo Santo Domingo. Lots of shops and places to eat.

Park
El Llano park, situated northwest of the Santo Domingo complex in Oaxaca, features a spacious leafy garden with walking paths and beautiful flower beds. The park boasts tall palm trees and a monument dedicated to a former Mexican president. A popular spot for locals to enjoy the green space, visitors can find numerous food vendors selling snacks and various toys/balloons. Outdoor activities such as inline skating courses and judo classes are also available for enthusiasts.
Really cool place to go and chill for a little bit. Lots of shade and places to sit. There are some places to grab food and sit I. The park and enjoy. The park is clean; no trash. I did not see any bathroom around. Enjoy!
Laura R — Google review
A neighborhood park that offers spaces for large group gathering, playground for the kids and pets, greenery for everyone to enjoy.
Sharon L — Google review
Nice park, busy during the evening. We were there on a Friday evening, quite busy and nice atmosphere. A little more green would be nice, like a field of grass.
Sebas R — Google review
If you’re looking for a place to chill and relax, this family park fits perfectly. There are lots of trees, wide paths, several fountains as well as food and beverage carts. You can rent electric cars for kids, or just watch people stroll, jog, skate, pedal and dance. Clearly it’s popular with the locals.
Tonyyy — Google review
El Llano Park is favored by local families. I sat on a foldable wooden bench purchased for comfort on Av Benito Juarez at the El Llano Park. I was told to get there early, around 2:30 pm to grab the best view of the Guelaguetza Parade. A stranger, Karla sat near me with an umbrella. I heard her say that her cell phone lacked energy. I offered to take the photos and send them to her, but I needed her umbrella protection. My phone was stored in a waterproof bag with a strap crossed around my shoulder. WhatsApp allowed me to easily communicate by text and send her the photos. Vhuntermassage LLC

Hit it 👍🏿! A park that is used by lots of locals and has some amazing eats. A little further away from the crowds makes the food better price and a little less busy. I would suggest doing a lap and seeing what you like. Most of the places that have the longer lines definitely point out the best options.
Olivier H — Google review
My favourite park in the city of Oaxaca. Visited in October 2021, park is very clean and safe. Perfect place to go for families on the weekend. Inline skating courses, judo classes, lots of food sellers and toy/ballon sellers.
B. R — Google review
Basically Oaxaca City’s Central Park… surprisingly in need of repair especially the children’s playgrounds with dangerous and outdated swings and slides. This park is a great and popular destination that needs attention by the local government since it is seen by many tourists and represents Oaxaca in many ways.

Jardín Conzatti is a charming green space in Oaxaca, dedicated to a renowned botanist. It's an ideal spot for families to spend quality time together, offering ample opportunities for relaxation and outdoor activities. The park features pleasant green areas, leafy trees, and inviting water ponds, providing a soothing environment for leisurely walks and peaceful moments. With plenty of seating options and vendors selling cooling treats, it's a great place to unwind and enjoy the fresh air.
Great not busy public garden-park within walking distance of Oaxaca's Zocalo. Find a shady bench to people watch, read a local newspaper, enjoy street food or restaurants around the garden, or nearby Cosecha market. Dog friendly.
Rob B — Google review
A small, quiet park a block from Parque El Llano. There’s a fountain in the center. It’s a great place to grab a torta and sit and have lunch. Get a torta on the south east corner at La Hormiga.

This a nice little park. Lots of shade and places to sit. I attended a ceremony celebrating the 75th anniversary of the park today. The park is surrounded by nice restaurants.

Finding the great, frequently spaced parks is a joy. Metal benches are plentiful, but move in and out of shade depending on time of day. More crowded on weekends but fun to people/dog watch!
Rob-Bob C — Google review
I love this little park, it's a lot smaller than the Llano Park close by, so it is more peaceful. It also has a lot more trees than its neighboring park, which really helps when looking for shade to escape from the brutal afternoon sun.

Jardín San Francisco is a charming and compact garden in Oaxaca, overlooked by a colonial-era church. It offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy beautiful scenery, with shady trees, extended paths, and water ponds. The park provides plenty of seating for relaxation and taking in the tranquil atmosphere. While it's a lovely place to visit, visitors should be cautious as there are vendors and money transactions happening in the area.
When I was in a tough situation with a lawsuit about a mistake a doctor made, Keith Landrum and the Landrum Law Firm really helped me out. They know so much about laws related to medicine and worked really hard for me. Because of them, we ended up with a good result that I couldn't have gotten by myself. I am forever thankful for their help.
Amasias V — Google review
For a very small park it's a nice bustling little place to watch the locals go about life. With the hospital near by there seems to be a lot of people on lunch breaks or relaxing. The neighbouring street has all the best street food options we could find in the city for day time hours and this park offers a shady area to enjoy the flavors.

Park
Parque Ciudad de las Canteras is a great option for those looking to park and sleep in their vehicle without the hustle and bustle of downtown. The entrance on Calle Ignacio Perez is well-lit and guarded day and night, providing a safe environment. Divided into three areas, the park offers a quiet atmosphere for relaxation. Interestingly, it sits on old stone quarries that once supplied stone for building the city, adding to its historical significance.
This is a wonderful park. It has many amenities for all types of people. It’s a great place to relax and take a reprieve from the city. It’s also a great place for kids with a park and other spaces designed for them. Many places in the park are in a state of disrepair and are off limits. I hope the city invests more in this place as it’s very special. There are many different plants to explore and a lake filled with fish. The topography is magical. The buildings here are of a unique architectural design and are worth exploring. Spend an afternoon here! Afterwards check out one of the many eateries on its periphery in the surrounding neighbourhoods. Well done Oaxaca, beautiful!

I had high hopes for this park, I was hoping for a bit of blue in a bit of green space. It appeared to me to be run down and virtually deserted. We did however go during a normal working day in January. We walked here from Oaxaca centre and soon the tourist space gave way to more commercial roads. I wouldn’t recommend the park based on my experience. Hopefully it’ll receive some attention and have the walkways and fences repaired soon.
Ben R — Google review
Take a taxi if your in centro. The walk isnt nice. Very little shade as well. But nice if its not to hot whwn you go as the kids can run around and there are turtles and fish to feed

Always is clean, restroom are free and clean. The park is amazing ...Gym, aerobics area, picknick tables . Love this park
Gaby G — Google review
Like others have posted, construction is going on but now the area is open for walking. I ignored some other "do not enter" signage along the walking paths, separating the new from old areas. I really liked the older areas, imaging what is was like. Posting a few pictures from the older areas. This would be a great place to walk with a dog.
Jason A — Google review
I found this place on the map and decided to walk to it for a look. At first it seemed a little weird but in context I found it to be great. It is an old Quarry site then just a waste running through it. The late 80s saw the creation of a public area and now displays many terraces, stage areas, and artifical pounds. Such a nice use of space and worth having a look if in the area. During the day it is hot a dry with very few people but after it cools off it becomes a more lively family area. It appears a huge construction has forced the closure of half the park which seems a shame but maybe reopen once completed?

The park is perfect for nature enthusiasts with young children who may not be able to venture into the mountains.
Best places I think when I lived in Oaxaca, very clean, quiet, great design advanced country level little park, also have lots of facilities. I went to there every day when I lived there for about half month. I will miss the park

Good to take kids. Not suitable for running. The track is up and down and left to right all the time full of rocks perfect for tripping.

This place is convenient if you are in the San Felipe area and want to exercise. The road leading to it and the 700m track inside are hilly, so it can be challenging. But you can run around the baseball field, which is flat. There is a playground, and a basketball court.

When you're down in the valley among the mezcal distilleries, agave, maguey and cacti, one tends to lose sight that you're surrounded by lush mountains and subalpine forests. This is a beautiful place to disconnect from the city. Whether a good hike, a meditation or finding a duende, this is a cool place to explore. Trails are well marked, maintained well, not much loose rock and no scrambling. Medium level of difficulty more or less. It's neat to see pines and oaks nestling up next to agave plants. I went on a Saturday and saw only 2 other groups on the trail. Lots of birds for birding fans. Sendero La Coronilla will take you up the mountain, deep into the valley. It's a 5km loop.

Really fun trail. Beautiful trees, some lizards, and great views of the city below. The hike takes a couple of hours and involves some elevation gain. 20 pesos per person entry fee. L

For only 20 pesos you get a secure hike through a beautiful valley of a nature reserve with great spots to rest or hike. If your lucky, you might see a Puma

Look very nice from outside. Sadly it's closed due covid.
Elisabeth N — Google review
Very nice 'off the beaten track' place to take a hike. (I wonder who uses all these zip-lines) Fantastic views of the valleys. Nice, nice, very nice. 😎🖒 Note: I'm still here as I type. Two bars on my cell phone. The trail continues....🏃

Hierve el Agua is an ancient geological site that boasts towering rock formations resembling waterfalls, as well as natural pools and springs. Visitors are encouraged to bring their bathing suits in order to take a refreshing dip in the saltwater springs. A comfortable private transport is provided, along with delicious Oaxacan coffee for the two-hour journey to reach this unique destination.
What a fascinating natural phenomenon. And it looks recent, which is even stranger. I bet it looks different in 20 years. The water is not warm, but not cold. Room temp. I didn't swim, but I did take off my shoes and walk around. Be careful it is slippery. And there are NO fences. Nothing to prevent you from falling off. There are 2 main features to see, and you have to walk to the other side to see back. Definitely worth it, though not an easy hike. It has bathrooms and change rooms, plus a bunch of food and souvenir vendors up top. The walk down and back up is not that easy, especially if you go ALL the way down to the bottom of the formation. But if you are in the area, I highly recommend checking it out.
Laurin J — Google review
Nice water fall and natural springs inviting for the water. We spent half a day there, went for a little hike, jumped into the natural swimming pools and had a quick bite there. We tried also for the first time coconut with chilly, good memory… If you go for a hike make sure you bring sufficient water and sun protection. The hike goes up and down there is little shade, relatively step and it‘s helpful to wear good shoes.
Thomas F — Google review
Petrified waterfalls. Several of them as a matter of fact. Quite bizarre and frankly beautiful. Also some pools people frequently swim in. Not that warm. Lots of space to roam around to get different vantage points. Be careful as it can be a little slick in spots and there are few railings. Some designated trails to walk along, too. Look for the occasional agave plant. All of this nestled in a mountain range.
Duncan M — Google review
The vistas presented before you are truly breathtaking and a marvel to behold. Taking the time to appreciate the scenery will create lasting memories for you. Encountering one of the 2 Patricia waterfalls in the world. I highly recommend taking a tour, which offers a convenient and informative way to explore the remarkable sights. Doing so can enhance your overall experience, ensuring you don't miss any of the hidden gems. Ultimately, experiencing these views is an unforgettable experience.
Mary — Google review
It was pretty tough to get to by car but the view was amazing. The water was actually colder than I thought something like 19 degrees. Also hiking around the area was really cool.
Physio F — Google review
It's not as spectacular as Pamukkale in Turkey, but the view is still nice. The hike is a little steep in some sections but easy to go in general.
SH W — Google review
A very worthy destination. These bubbling waters are seen here and in only one other place in the world. Take a little hike down to the waters and enjoy a bustling bazaar above. We arrived early and it was not too busy.
Howard O — Google review
Bring swimsuit, cash and sun screen. If you want to go down and do the hiking, definitely closed shoes are recommended, hike the mountain with a guide so you get info and he makes also great pictures

Jardín Labastida is a charming small park in Oaxaca, lined with trees providing shade from the sun. On its north side, there are various restaurants and coffee shops offering a pleasant view. The park hosts street food vendors, an art fair on weekends, and native crafts vendors. It's a popular spot for tourists to relax and enjoy the work of local artists and craftsmen.
A lovely weekend art market here. It’s only on Friday-Sunday though, so don’t make the same mistake I did and assume it’s there multiple days and totally miss out on buying some nice art 😭
Fumi — Google review
LOTS of trees and It is a nice quiet park. My friend and I took pictures on my film camera there. We rode our tandem bike all around in it and we didn't fall in the tight turns, so I would recommend to ride bikes in it. The little people who live there are nice and they said hello when I was posing for a picture.
Anders B — Google review
A small park that spans exactly one block in length and about a quarter of a block in width. It is lined with trees that offer a nice respite from the Oaxacan sun and the north side of the park has several restaurants and coffee shops where one can relax and have a meal with a nice view. The park is home to street food vendors and an art fair that takes place on the weekends. There are also vendors of native crafts. A pleasant little spot to take a rest.
