The Virginia State Capitol, a grand colonial-style structure built in 1785, is the oldest legislative body in the nation. Designed by Thomas Jefferson and influenced by the Roman Maison Carre in Nimes, France, it remains Virginia's seat of government. The interior features a unique marble statue of George Washington modeled from life. Situated atop Shockoe Hill, it offers stunning views of Richmond and its surroundings. Additionally, the nearby 51.
We had an awesome tour of the capitol given by Sasha. She was very informative. So much history she gave us. The tour was over an hour so please allow time. She told us about the old city hall next door which has been renovated recently. We did. You’re only allowed to tour the first floor which was beautiful. The grounds of the capitol are also beautiful.

We were recently in Richmond and had to add the state capital to our list of places that we wanted to stop and visit. We weren't sure if we could enter or tour, but we tried. We found the security guards to be extremely friendly and helpful. It was a wonderful experience, and we were able to go on a self-tour since we were limited with time. We were told we could join other timed tours, which was great. At many places we visit, we have to wait for the tour, but at the capital, we were free to go ahead at our pace. Loved it!

This historic site offers a captivating glimpse into the past. The complimentary tour provided an enriching experience. The knowledgeable guide demonstrated exceptional expertise and answered all inquiries with enthusiasm. The hour-long tour was highly informative and provided valuable insights into the Capitol’s rich history. The visitor center entrance to the Capitol houses a gift shop that offers a selection of snacks for those seeking a quick repast. Throughout the tour, there are designated stops where visitors can pause to immerse themselves in the captivating history of the Capitol. All in all, it's a must visit for any history buffs in the area.

Reception and security were all very welcoming, pleasant, and engaging. I walked in to the tour & information office at a very quiet time but they were willing to provide a 1-on-1 guided experience which was awesome. I had the pleasure of touring with Mr. JC Bussard. He is a wonderful custodian of history and was great to interact with and ask questions throughout. As a plus there is no charge to the public. Score!

Beautiful park! The locals seem to use it as a place to “touch grass” during their work days as there were mostly business dressed people walking around staring at trees (we went on a Monday). It’s very well kept and there’s a ton of shade if you go when it’s hot out(it usually hot out). Not much to do but it’s a nice place to see.

A very beautiful & Historical building. Free entry . They have tours and a very dedicated officer explained us full history related to this monument. State capitol is Very well maintained building in heart of Richmond city.

Sasha took us on a 2pm tour on a Saturday and was so informative and kind! I learned about the capitol’s history, the revolutionary war, and Virginia state legislature. It was a really interesting fun free thing to do on an afternoon in Richmond. Perfect rainy day activity.

It was amazing to walk these hollow grounds FREE to the public. The capitals architect was amazing. The statues and the other buildings on the ground were beautiful and the historic artifacts inside statues paintings monuments were amazing. Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is a year-round destination featuring over 50 acres of themed gardens, dining options, and a classical domed conservatory. The garden offers a variety of attractions including a cherry tree walk, rose garden, children's area, and educational programs for all levels of gardening enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy events such as the Virginia Daffodil Society Show, spring and fall plant sales, and a holiday light spectacular in December.
This was a great place!! So much to see, I will definitely be going back!!! Bring water, the vending machine had a hard time taking cards, which is all they took!!! They were on the opposite side of the park!! The walk ways are very easy to walk on, very well maintained.
Karen C — Google review
The gardens are beautiful. I was very impressed by the size of the gardens as well as how well everything was labeled. There were also interesting art pieces displayed throughout. While I do not have children, there were lots of play areas and even a little water sections that would be perfect for children. Be prepared to walk a lot as there is a lot gardens to see. My only complaint would be that the butterfly conservatory was completely closed but it was the same price. I feel like that is a bug part of the experience so if it is not opened, they should adjust the admission price.
Margaret F — Google review
What a gem! Had the lovely opportunity to visit the gardens and discover they were hosting a concert the next day — so fun! Incredible section for children and families. Pond is a great spot for taking some Time to see what’s swimming around. Quite a bit of construction at the moment, which didn’t interfere with the enjoyment of the gardens.

We had our Elopement Ceremony at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden on 5/5/25, and it was truly amazing! The entire setting was like a dream. The gardens were bursting with vibrant flowers in full bloom, creating the most beautiful and romantic backdrop for our vows. Everywhere we turned, there were gorgeous spots perfect for photos, which made capturing our special day so easy and memorable. The staff at Lewis Ginter were incredibly helpful, kind, and professional from start to finish. They answered all our questions promptly, helped us plan the details of our ceremony, and made sure everything went smoothly on the big day. We felt so well taken care of, and it allowed us to fully relax and enjoy the moment. I absolutely loved having our wedding here and can’t recommend this venue enough to anyone looking for a stunning, peaceful, and unforgettable place to say “I do.” Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden made our elopement everything we dreamed it would be!

August 2025 Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is beautifully maintained, with a nice variety of flowers, plants, and walking paths. It’s a relaxing place to spend an hour or two, and there are plenty of benches and shaded spots to just sit and take in the scenery. The themed gardens and water features add a nice touch, and everything feels thoughtfully designed. KID FRIENDLY! The Children’s Garden is a hit — with a splash area, play spaces, and sand box. It’s a great stop if you’re in the Richmond area and want to enjoy some fresh air and nature.

The botanical garden in Richmond is a must-visit! It’s incredibly spacious—you can easily spend several hours exploring. There’s a beautiful variety of plants, including lots of dragonflies fluttering around and a stunning collection of roses. The grounds are peaceful and well-maintained, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. They also have a large café and a great gift shop with plenty of unique items. If you're visiting Richmond, this is definitely one of the top attractions to check out!
Alice R — Google review
It was a lovely garden, with benches along the way to pause throughout the journey, and there was a treehouse for kids. The paths were quiet and the wind chimes added to a peaceful vibe. For people allergic to bees, the rose section was a bit overwhelming. We were a bit bothered by the noise of the construction taking place in one area of the garden when we visited (April) and I also didn’t like that the maps were only provided for members. However, the gift shop was larger than expected and full of a variety of beautiful items, and the beauty of the space brought joy to my day.

Took my mom here for her birthday as part of a Richmond trip. It rained for the first few minutes of our trip but once the rain stopped, the grounds were so pretty. I particularly enjoyed some of the shaded walking paths with streams and huge bonsai!

Cemetery
Sights & Landmarks
Hollywood Cemetery, known as one of America's premier garden cemeteries, is a picturesque resting place for many historic figures. Established in 1847, it was designed in the pastoral style to resemble a pleasant park rather than traditional graveyards. The cemetery offers dramatic scenic overlooks of the city skyline and the James River rapids. It is the final resting place for notable figures such as presidents James Monroe and John Tyler.
This is one of the most beautiful and historical cemeteries in the country. It is a great place to visit and reflect upon our short time here on this earth. People today do not talk or even think about death and their own mortality. A person has a much better perspective on life if they do. I would highly recommend visiting this special cemetery and appreciate the beautiful mausoleums and tombstones throughout the hillside.
Jenny B — Google review
This beautiful cemetery offers ample parking, with additional street parking available nearby. Enter through the cemetery gates, go down the hill, and the parking lot is to the right. The best view of the park can be found near Monroe’s mausoleum. The cherry blossoms here are stunning. The park is quiet, peaceful, and perfect for walking.
Kaitlin W — Google review
Peaceful walk… Hollywood Cemetery is a nice spot to walk. The cemetery is big and hilly, offering great views of the James River, downtown Richmond, and a calm environment for exploring its historic grounds. There are different sections to admire the monuments and gravestones, and enjoy the scenic beauty of the surrounding landscape.
Debashri M — Google review
Beautiful cemetery that has many historical figures and interesting items to see. It was peaceful and quiet. You can easily drive through and follow the blue line on the road as a self guided tour. There are parking areas on the drive or just pull off to road side if you see something interesting. The overview of the river Beautiful.
Mike S — Google review
Absolutely breathtaking. Very peaceful to walk through and spend time admiring centuries of craftsmanship, masonry, and ancestry. Sits overlooking the James River rapids with beautiful trees across the property and the city skyline in the periphery. Lucked out and had 3 whitetail deer stroll alongside me plus a tattered Monarch land on the mausoleum of President Monroe. A beautifully preserved venue that is both humbling and unexpectedly inspiring. I’d consider this a must-see in the Richmond area! There is a lot to explore if you want to walk. Quite a few graded hills so wear comfortable clothes and bring water, a light snack.
Christie M — Google review
This place is rich in history and beauty. An active cemetery and resting place of Soldiers, two presidents, and many loved ones with a few well knowns sprinkled throughout. Overlooks the James River,

My husband does Way mlMarking which is an activity which is kind of tied into geocaching. It's locating interesting places. Cemeteries have lots of interesting historical places to waymark. So I've seen a lot of cemeteries. This is one of the top three cemeteries I've ever been to. It is absolutely beautiful. There are so many old trees and interesting structures and memorials. I love the fact there's no plastic flowers or decorations. We met the gentleman who gives the chores and spent time sharing the history of the cemetery with my husband and it really made the visit all that more interesting. We'll be going back soon and next time we plan on taking the tour. It's well worth the visit, even if you're not sure you're into cemeteries. It's just a beautiful place.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is a highly respected art museum situated in Richmond, Virginia. With an extensive collection of artwork from around the world, the VMFA strives to educate and enrich the lives of its patrons through various programming and outreach initiatives.
What a beautiful museum! Everyone in our group loved it. The collections are thoughtfully curated, with a great mix of religious, cultural, and ethnic art. So many of the pieces have detailed background info that really adds depth to the experience — you walk away feeling inspired. The space is super clean and well-maintained. No clutter anywhere, and even the restrooms were spotless and smelled fresh (which isn’t always a given — so bonus points for that!). It was honestly a fantastic visit from start to finish. I’d absolutely come back again, and if anyone ever asks me what to check out in this area, this museum will be at the top of my list.
Wei S — Google review
If you live near Washington, D.C. and have already explored all the Smithsonian museums, and you're looking to venture a bit farther, this place is worth the trip. It’s not huge, but it offers a thoughtfully curated collection — and best of all, it’s open year-round and completely free. The surrounding scenery is also beautiful, making it a perfect getaway for those who want a peaceful break from the everyday hustle. The current Frida Kahlo exhibition didn’t quite meet my expectations, as it features more writing than artwork, but it’s still worth a visit. This is a museum where you can enjoy the playfulness of surrealism and discover the hidden modernity within ancient art.
SJ — Google review
There are a lot of great works of art! More Egyptian items than I have seen other places. That was very neat to see. The Faberge eggs were very interesting. I really enjoyed the section with the black walls and the lighting on the paintings. That really made them pop! We also enjoyed the giant paintings!

I visited the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and absolutely loved it! The Frida Kahlo exhibition was incredible, so inspiring and beautifully curated. The museum itself is spacious and elegant, with a great atmosphere for art lovers. I really enjoyed spending time there, and I’d love to go back to explore more of their collections!

My son and I went today. It was an incredible experience in no small part because of the wonderful people who work there. I am bad at jotting names down to remember them for reviews but.. the lady on the first floor from Texas was kind and directed us to some amazing art. The gentileman on the second floor with the nice mustache was helpful. And Mary in the cafe showed us compassion and gentilness in a very embarassing moment. Thank you VMFA y'all rock and your space is amazing. All the love from your new Texas friends we're already plotting our next visit!

I had a fabulous time at the Frida exhibit back in October. It was amazing. I got to see pictures I've never seen before. I have seen a Frida exhibit before. This was My first time at the Virginia museum. It was amazing. It's a beautiful museum. The sculpture outside. I really enjoyed it. I didn't get a chance to see the rest of the museum because I spent most of my time looking at the Frida stuff and buying books and looking at all the stuff to buy.
Lesa M — Google review
This is an exceptional museum! The permanent exhibits have plenty to offer and the ticketed temporary exhibits are always worth the price. The sculpture garden is a great place to relax, too. I’m excited to see what the expansion brings in the coming years!

The White House of the Confederacy, built in 1818, served as the executive residence of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his family from 1861 to 1865. Restored to its wartime appearance, the house is now furnished with period furniture and offers guided tours showcasing its historical significance. Visitors can explore interpretive exhibits that provide insight into the tumultuous Civil War era while admiring the elegant Rococo-Revival furniture and experiencing the ambiance of social gatherings hosted by Varina Davis.
Cool and neat o tour. Some stuff is still original mirrors and some wall figurines. The dining room story is heartbreaking. For aferican Americans it's not what you think it is. I overheard some in an elevator and they were bashing it but they had so much history of each slave and who spied and who escaped to Hampton roads. Take the tour it is interesting.
John K — Google review
This was literally the worst stop on our entire trip in 2025, and we went to 50 different locations during our vacation. First off, parking was horrid! It did state on the website that you can park in the parking deck of the hospital. Once we found the entrance to the parking garage, we then had to walk down two blocks to the museum. Fortunately, we walked around the back to find where you go in to buy a ticket. We were told the first tour was canceled and we had to wait an hour for the next one. At that time, there were two people at the counter (please remember this detail). The staff at the counter informed us that we could walk a few blocks to visit the capital if we wanted, and then return for the tour. We chose to just wait around since my wife is still recovering from her chemo treatments, I am not in the greatest of health, and it was almost 95 degrees outside, and we just drove in from Williamsburg and didn't even check into our hotel yet. We were not sure if we could keep up the pace walking and be back in time for the next tour. We paid for the tour and walked around the grounds a little bit, taking some B-roll video and pictures, and just sat in the courtyard waiting for the tour. At first we were the only ones there. As it got closer to tour time, more and more people showed up. When the tour started, there were literally 21 people on our tour, and the tour guide (one of the people that was hanging at the counter, by the way) said they normally limit the tours to 15-18 people. Needless to say, we were cramped. As the tour went on, the guide was mostly focused on people not touching anything, staying on the carpets, and not leaning on the wally. It was so cramped we could hardly see anything or even hear the guide. It was a truly dreadful experience. We were there once; that was enough. Oh... we did obtain a stamped paper from the museum to use as parking validation. I presented it to the attendant at the parking garage, and he basically yelled at us and said we were supposed to go into the hospital to take care of the parking cost. Nice of the museum to mention that little bit of information, as I am sure that happens to everyone. We had a much better time walking around the old Hollywood Cemetery.

I was concerned they would be sympathetic to the Confederates, but I found the tour pretty straightforward. No Confederate flags or anything. I particularly enjoyed hearing about the slaves who escaped and sold out the Davises. I understand some won't feel comfortable here, but ultimately, they lost. So why not learn some more about why the U.S. is the way it is? (Or gloat, which is also fair.)
Anya — Google review
The place where Jefferson Davis, the only president of the confederation dwelt during the war of secession. The guide was excellent. And we could have a more intimate understanding of the life of the leader of the confederation.

An excellent tour that opened a window onto Jefferson Davis’s life. A great tour by Rob, who has deep knowledge of the period, and made the house come alive.

Omg this place is amazing! The site is ofcourse wondrous, but ANDY is such a pro. She was SUPER funny, but very professional, knowledgeable, accommodating. Dont come to Richmond without stopping in!

Great tour. Costs $15, $12 for students. The tour itself is about half an hour to 45 minutes, and the tours leave every 45 minutes. The building itself is pretty small.

Thoroughly enjoyed our trip through the history of the Confederacy with Charlie. He was not only very knowledgeable, but was extremely funny and made the tour fun. I expected a kind of boring monologue, but received witty humor. Thank you Charlie for making it fun for my wife and I!

The American Civil War Museum- Historic Tredegar provides a comprehensive exploration of the Civil War from three distinct perspectives: Union, Confederate, and African-American. Situated at the historic Tredegar Iron Works, which played a significant role in supplying iron to the Confederacy, this museum offers immersive exhibits and original artifacts that vividly depict one of America's most defining conflicts. Visitors can engage with interactive displays to gain insights into the war's impact on both the nation and individuals who experienced it firsthand.
Went as a chaperone on my daughters field trip and enjoyed all the exhibits and the activities they did for the children. It was rainy and they found other activities inside so we didn't have to be out walking in the rain. All the kids seemed to enjoy it, and it was very informative. I've lived in the area my whole 40 years and this was my first time going, had I known how interesting it was I would have come sooner! Thanks for having us!

A great place to learn about American history. The staff at the museum were very friendly and shared a lot of fascinating stories, including the history of the building itself. If you’re visiting Richmond, this is definitely a must-see. If you’re driving, you get three hours of free parking while visiting the museum.

Artifact filled museum with many rare items and personal effects primarily from confederate soldiers. Impressive collection of period weapons. Has an introductory movie that gives a good background to the conditions that caused the war. Very well laid out with various media, and presents a generally balanced narrative. Located in an iconic location in an old steel mill and weapons factory.

A gem, a must see! The area is simply beautiful with much to see and to experience! A well curated history museum with an educational mission that’s organized and arranged chronologically. The exhibits are historically accurate, and cultivated a deeper understanding of social and economic struggles and successes. We arrived late into the area and thought we’d have to miss out but discovered that had a special event that evening. “Wine Down Wednesday” entry, free beverage of choice, w bar, free appetizers, and a wonderful group of musicians completing the thoughtful aesthetics and the overall sensory experience. The museum also provides a complementary Audi tour which I highly recommend to add more depth and richness to exhibits. The event was akin to a Charity Event where I would have expected to pay for to attend. This after hours, small group experience was the same cost as their regular admission and parking was free. I highly recommend you to 1) add this museum to your “must see” list 2)follow them on social media and look for future events 3) If a scavenger hunt is offered, do it, if you don’t want the opportunity to win the gift bag, you will learn a some fun facts 4) check nearby concert calendar to plan for parking 5) If I was local I would explore their membership options. They offer benefits including free admission, discounts on events, and more. I would attend every event! Great job! What a wonderful, memorable and educational experience!

While the artifacts and replicated firearms at the entrance are interesting, the rest of the Museum is an enormous disappointment. Early into the walk through even an average Historian can tell this is not a museum at all, but is a political site likely funded by a Woke activist to justify an unnecessary war that killed 650,000 Americans.. The museum goes out of its way to incorrectly present this divisive war and it's cause, and to condemn all of the southland and it's white people; while it whitewashes the horrendous war crimes of Grant and Sherman. While It briefly mentions that civilian occupied Vicksburg was surrounded and bombarded by Grant, for 43 days, it fails to mention that thousands of Southern women, children and elderly civilians were intentionally killed under his command, as was his war policy, as was also done by Sherman and other Union Officers. It briefly mentions the Missouri massacres ordered by Union Command, of southern civilians including women and children, whom wouldn't sign allegiance to the Union. It denies the real taxation issues, and lack of representation that brought the south into the war. This is a "Fake" museum.

There is so much history packed into this great old building. There are two stories, with elevators, and either floors have incredible displays. They have incorporated some testimonials as well as some short films throughout the museum. It's a lot of reading so young children may have a hard time staying engaged.

This museum was great, very well maintained, and very detailed. You also get a chance to take a look at a short movie summarizing the American Civil War for free (after entry). If you are a history fanatic, the best part that might catch your attention is the details regarding Lincoln's time including his rise and end, i.e., assassination. Very detailed historical documents (actual + authentic duplicates) are well reserved regarding Lincoln's time. Loved it.

The Science Museum of Virginia is a top destination for science enthusiasts, featuring interactive exhibits and live demonstrations. Housed in the historic Broad Street Station, the museum offers hands-on experiences exploring topics such as space, human biology, and environmental science. The museum's location in a neoclassical building adds to its charm, with permanent and rotating exhibitions covering a wide range of scientific subjects.
My family visited the Science Museum of Virginia on a Thursday mainly to see the dinosaur exhibit, and it exceeded our expectations! I’m a 52-year-old woman and I was completely in awe! The detail and scale of the dinosaurs were incredible. My husband and teenage daughter were equally impressed. The exhibit was immersive, educational, and beautifully done. The museum overall is clean, well-organized, and full of hands-on experiences for all ages. It wasn’t overly crowded, which made for a relaxed and enjoyable visit. Very easy parking, too! Highly recommend!

The best science museum we’ve went to so far! Many interactive activities, musical, art, educational, physical exercise, mind opening and many more. Specific activities geared towards younger kids and others towards teens. As a parent I enjoyed myself a lot, too. Clean, friendly staff and well organized. Paid extra for the dome movie/show and the dinosaur exhibit. Both worth the extra money. Be sure to look at the daily schedule so you can get the best out of your visit. You can easily spend 3 hours there and even more if you have very curious children. Buy tickets in advance so you get discounts if you are adding exhibits or the dome. Highly recommend!

My husband and I recently got married at the museum. It was only the second venue we looked at, but we were so confident about it we booked it on the spot! He was excited by the SR-71 and the trains out back, and I loved the beautiful architecture. The Special Events Team, especially Shannon, sealed the deal for us. They were very responsive and professional and they entertained our bold ideas. Guests were able to enjoy the interactive Speed exhibit during cocktail hour, we were able to have portraits taken all over the venue, a robot drew our initials and an outline of the SR-71, and we were able to customize the space by removing the center pendulum and adding additional lighting. Our special day was truly one of a kind! During the wedding, Shannon made sure everything ran smoothly. I saw her assisting the lighting crew, the caterers, and the planners, as well as her staff. I could not recommend this team and venue enough!

The Science Museum of Virginia was such an amazing experience for our whole family. Right now, they have the dinosaur exhibit, and my kids were in awe. My son couldn’t stop staring at the dinosaurs, and my daughter loved reading about the different species. The rest of the museum is just as exciting there are interactive exhibits on speed, light, and so many hands-on activities that kept the kids entertained for hours. The LightPlace for kids 5 and under was perfect, and they had a blast climbing and exploring there. I thought the Forge was such a cool idea where you can actually bring your own supplies and use their equipment. Between the insect and reptile exhibits, live bees, and other science displays, there was so much to see and do. We actually left for lunch and came back later in the day because there was just that much to explore. It’s definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

Loved this museum. This is the first science museum we've been to where everyone enjoyed themselves. There's things for all ages, we especially the music activity in the Boost exhibit and the ultimate dinosaurs. It wasnt overly crowded and the prices are very reasonable. Only wish the snack bar had more offerings but that was by no means a show stopper. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Loved it! we will go back!

A recent trip to the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond was an absolute delight, offering a captivating blend of education and entertainment that truly impressed me. From the moment we stepped inside, the vibrant atmosphere and engaging exhibits promised a memorable experience, and it certainly delivered. One of the undeniable highlights was the dinosaur exhibit. It's not just a static display; these incredible prehistoric creatures are brought to life through impressive animatronics, showcasing their movements in a way that's both realistic and awe-inspiring. Watching the "dinosaurs moving the dolmen" – a fascinating reference to their potential interaction with ancient structures or simply their powerful presence – was a particular standout, sparking wonder in visitors of all ages. Be prepared for an active visit, though! The museum is expansive, with multiple floors and a vast array of exhibits to explore. Comfortable shoes are an absolute must as you'll be doing a lot of walking to take it all in. Every step is worth it, however, as each turn brings new discoveries and interactive displays. Mid-visit, the concession area was a welcome find. It offered a nice variety of options, from quick snacks to more substantial fare, all served efficiently and with a friendly smile. It was the perfect spot to refuel and recharge before diving back into the scientific wonders. Finally, the parking situation was remarkably convenient. There's ample dedicated parking available on-site, making arrival and departure stress-free – a significant bonus for any popular attraction. Overall, the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond is a fantastic destination for families, science enthusiasts, and anyone looking for an enriching and enjoyable day out. With its dynamic dinosaur displays, vast exhibits, pleasant concessions, and easy parking, it's a place we'd highly recommend and look forward to visiting again.

It’s a great place to visit but some stuff needs to be worked on like labs doesn’t look like lab, it’s literally a part of zoo. And forge department need some deep changes. This is very great building and I think it should be used to its full potential.

The Virginia Museum of History and Culture is a large, well-maintained museum with a diverse collection of artifacts from all over Virginia. The permanent exhibits are well-done and provide an excellent overview of the history of the state. Additionally, rotating exhibits are always fresh and entertaining. The museum also houses a research library with access to many rare books and manuscripts.
I'm a Virginia native, born and bred, and I had never visited the VMHC before. I was intrigued to take a look at its Unbound exhibit on freed slaves in the state early on and how people of color had to navigate those conditions. I always love reading about families who took their present condition, endured, and in many cases, created free and wealthy families of color. These stories continue to inspire my own legacy building in freedom for my family. #VeryInspirational #WellCurated

I felt like the tickets were very overpriced for the special exhibition. The LEGO stuff was definitely cool to see but way too pricey. The museum‘s regular displays are a bit random. You have historical items and then stuff like a lady’s pants from a few years ago cuz she was photographed protesting anti-abortion laws. Really? Those pants deserve to be in a museum?

My first visit to the Virginia Museum of History & Culture was inspired by the exhibit entitled “Un/Bound: Free Black Virginians, 1619-1865.” As stated on the website, this “traveling” exhibit explores the lives of free Black Virginians from the arrival of the first captive Africans in 1619 to the abolition of slavery in 1865. I discovered how Virginia’s people of color achieved their freedom and persevered within a legal system that recognized them as free but not equal. ✊🏽 Of course, I understood that this exhibit, based on the title, would not be like strolling through Central Park on a beautiful Spring or Fall day 🍂🌷, but realizing that most of my adult life has been influenced by how they experienced life daily was painstakingly difficult to digest. Being a person of color, my experience was bittersweet. ❤️ It was heartwarming to learn that there were hundreds of free Africans living in Virginia long before the abolition of slavery; but heartbreaking to read about the inequality and injustice they endured. 😢 Anyways, I spent approximately two hours strolling through powerful objects and reading first-person and narrated accounts of Virginia’s history. 📖 My hope in God is strengthened by His love, grace and mercy that flows through my heart, which has also helped to shape the course of my life. 🙏🏽

✨I’m a Fan Girl of the VMHC✨ As a PhD in history, I had the incredible opportunity to spend two weeks at the VMHC on a short term fellowship. The VMHC truly exceeded my expectations. The staff is wonderful, effortlessly setting me up at a reading table with all my documents. Everything needed for my research was at my fingertips—rich sources that became the core of my dissertation. Their deep knowledge of the collections is inspiring. ✨The reading room is lovely and so comfortable, making it a place where you could easily spend all day. Unlike other places, this one invites you to stay, as if saying, “Can I get a pillow and a cup of tea? I’ll be just fine here.” It’s the best library I’ve ever worked in. ✨I explored the rest of the museum and found wonderfully curated exhibits, including Julia Child’s display during my visit. ✨The café offers fantastic food—definitely not the usual skip-it experience. I enjoyed a latte or cappuccino every morning, often savoring lunch and dessert there. I’m truly a fan! ✨The gift shop is equally charming, with thoughtfully selected items. I still cherish my sweater and pins. ✨Parking is easy and accessible, as are all entryways and museum navigation for those using wheelchairs. If you’re in the area, take your time to explore every inch of this remarkable place. In my experience, it ranks among the best in the country, and I’ve visited many libraries, archives, and special collections. The friendly and helpful staff makes it a truly inspiring environment!

Went in to see the Julia Child exhibit. It was wonderful. I'd like to get back and see the rest as I was pretty late due to traffic. However, when they say they are turning the lights out on you they are not playing. You cannot exit back out of the front of the building. It goes out to the side. Keep that in mind depending on where you park. I didn't realize it was right near the art museum too. Not far from food, markets and fun!

Nestled in the heart of Richmond, the Virginia Holocaust Museum stands as a poignant tribute to the resilience and stories of Holocaust survivors. This free museum offers visitors an immersive experience that delves into one of history's darkest chapters while emphasizing the importance of remembrance. Among its powerful exhibits is a reconstructed cattle car, symbolizing the harrowing journey faced by countless Jews during World War II, alongside an insightful Nuremberg Courtroom exhibit that recounts the trials held for Nazi war criminals.
This museum is worth the visit. Everyone should take the time to understand this story. The museum is very very well done. You leave with this time on your mind. These were people reduced to nothing. The inhumanity which created those events is beyond evil.

This was my first time here to this museum, I am a big history nerd when it comes to these things. Learning about the Holicost and what they went through is very important and sad at the same time. What they went through back then is nothing to forget. Especially when our current president doesn't think it happened. I had a really great time.

The Virginia Holocaust Museum is a must-visit destination for those seeking a profound understanding of the devastating consequences that fanaticism can unleash. The museum's exhibits powerfully convey the tragic realities of the Holocaust, offering a haunting glimpse into the depths of human suffering and the importance of remembrance. Through thoughtfully curated displays and educational resources, the museum fosters empathy, encourages critical reflection, and underscores the imperative of preventing such atrocities from happening again. Historic St. John's Church, a 1741 Episcopal church in Richmond, Virginia, holds great significance in American history. It was here on March 23, 1775, that Patrick Henry delivered his famous "Give me liberty or give me death!" speech during the Second Virginia Convention, persuading them to arm a Virginia militia. The church also hosted the Second Virginia Convention attended by Thomas Jefferson and other key figures in the American Revolution a year before the Declaration of Independence was drafted.
It's a beautiful church with wonderful history. Visited this place for the 5th time. The historical theater only played in the prime summer time. Watched it twice, which is a must see. We enjoy the guided tour every time. Very cute gift shop. Stuffs are extremely helpful and friendly.

We found out this location was close to where we were staying . It is one of those types of stops; you don't realize how close you are until you start looking around deeper at places nearby. We had to add the stop to our list before we left Richmond. We got to the church when they were opening up for the day. The gentleman that was there was apologizing for being so late to open up (but it was only 5 minutes). We talked to him about the freeway traffic we would hit when we left. He asked us if we wanted to take a tour of the church. We had already read all the placards and said we had to go. The church offers a shortened tour that allows visitors to go inside for a brief period to see the interior and take pictures. We opted for that and had an extremely pleasant experience. The docent was friendly and answered all our questions, even though we didn't take the full tour. She let us take as many photos and videos as we wanted, and we weren't rushed. Loved it. We are so glad that we stopped here, and we want to thank the staff for treating us with the respect and consideration of a customer and traveling tourist. We wish we could give a sixth star. We highly recommend you stop at this location if you find yourself in Richmond. We commend the individuals working on the morning of June 28, 2025, for their outstanding performance. We appreciate the efforts of the gentleman at the gift shop and the woman who guided us into the church. Thank you! We will have a video and blog post coming out about this location sometime in January as we are extremely backed up on our media being posted live.

The reenactment is absolutely amazing!! All the actors had put so much passion and effort into their roles. From the moment it began, we were transported back to 1775. This place was really beautiful. The church was very unique. I believe it was the first church built in the new world or something like that. The cemetery surrounding it was very old. I found Edgar Allan Poe's mothers grave. The inside of the church was very unique. I loved all the little boxes that you sat in. We were too late for the actual tour but they did just let us come in to take a couple pictures look around and the lady was awesome to even share some information with us.

Richmond National Battlefield Park spans 3,000 acres of historic battlefields, preserving ironworks, gun positions, and a Confederate army hospital. As the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War, Richmond was a key target for Union forces. The park delves into major campaigns such as the Peninsula Campaign and Overland Campaign of 1864. Visitors can explore walking trails that lead to original fortifications and battlegrounds where soldiers fought in close proximity.
What a beautiful hidden National Park in the city of Richmond. There's also a small, well-appointed museum that's free to visit along with a brief movie theater with the most comfortable chairs. The gift shop and Rangers are also in this building. You can get your national parks passes here. I was thankful for a handicap lift that was easy to use on the side of the older building. It's really convenient and accessible.

If I had a nickel for every stop sign leading up to this park from the northwest, I'd probably have about twenty five nickels. Mathematics aside, this site includes a sweeping overlook of Richmond. Nestled just south of the main walkways, the Richmond National Battlefield Park has more than enough historical merit to warrant a trip or two.

It was an interesting stop on our way home. The visitor center offers so much information about the area and has several artifacts from the battle. The battlefield had a few cannons and trails you can walk at your own pace.

This park was awesome to visit but heads up, definitely need a car if you have kiddos because it stretches over such a massive area between Richmond and Cold Harbor. The only unfortunate part of this massive park was all the trash people leave around the small areas of interest which is no ding on the NPS - just wish we had more respect.

It was really nice, quiet garden to walk, hang out place. You can picnic or just lay down and take nap! I went here with my husband. We walk to the down to see Japanese garden and Italian garden. We saw a lot of squirrels and deers. It was amazing. I love nature and i like the way they take care of this place except bamboos. Please, take good care of those bamboos! Bamboos symbolize very good fortune. The park/garden was not dog friendly unfortunately. That is why I gave only 3 stars just because bamboos (one of my favorite plant) and I couldn’t bring my well behave dog. I would still recommend this place, family friendly, stuff were friendly. Years ago I attended a wedding at the Italian Gardens and it was a beautiful ceremony. The Italian Gardens are right behind the historic mansion. In front of the mansion is a grouping of the most amazing trees that my children loved having a picnic under. Maymont has benches set up under these trees. The fact that admission is free to all of the grounds and the farm area is amazing and quite the gift to Richmond. I hope people appreciate how unique and special this is. Agecroft Hall & Gardens is a stunning Tudor mansion and estate located in Richmond, Virginia. Originally built in the late 15th century in Lancashire, England, it was disassembled and reassembled at its present site in the 1920s. Visitors can take tours of the lavish manor house and explore its picturesque gardens. The estate also hosts various events including The Richmond Shakespeare Festival, offering performances in the courtyard of the authentic 16th-century manor home.
We spent several hours inside and out of this impressive transplanted Tudor mansion. Very impressive wood work and craftsmanship in the mansion. Lots of little details brought to life by the staging of some rooms. I found the attached kitchen to be the most interesting. Small little hidden stairways so that the staff could move throughout the house. Pull chains and bells located in interesting areas. The massive library was also very interesting. Containing lots of period books that you would find in a well established estate. The grounds were also very well maintained and have lots of impressive trees. I was impressed with several very large magnolia trees. The herb garden smelled wonderful. Overall this was a highlight for the day.

Calling all mansion and garden tour enthusiasts! What a wonderful gem in Richmond where you can see classic Tudor Style and beautiful gardens. We toured at opening on a Sunday and were greeted by super friendly staff who exuded passion for the home. Small fee to tour the home and the the gardens are free. Also, military service members are free which was 5 stars right away. You can spend an hour or an entire afternoon here with a self guided tour of the gardens and house. The staff gave a brief but very informative introduction to the home and then allowed you to explore on your own with tour guides stationed throughout different rooms. A small but great gift shop filled with treasures. We look forward to returning in the Spring to see the tulips, per one of the guides recommendations. Easy to find, plenty of parking, if you’re visiting in the summer like we did, the house is air conditioning which gives a nice break from exploring the grounds.

Went here on Mother's Day and had a fantastic time exploring the gardens and home. The Tudor mansion was beautiful and well preserved. The craftsmanship and history is amazing to learn about and see. The gardens were small and delightful, many plants to enjoy that you wouldn't really see elsewhere. The manicured grounds are open and inviting; they encourage you to bring your lawn chairs or blankets and have a picnic! There are some trails which we did not explore yet, (due to my broken leg), but I look forward to coming back to see where they lead!

The words to describe Agecroft Hall and Gardens won't do them justice, but I'll try in grand hope that others will carve out time to visit and experience these gems in Richmond, VA. I attended a 3-day TUDORCON conference there in early October. The Agecroft home is literally a transplant to America from England in the early 1900s. Think of TUDOR style, including the amazing wavy leaded windows. The interior has been put together to represent the period and for those who study this history, get ready to be wowed. DO the tours of the house and gardens, and if timing is right, go to an event there! We had lutist Ronn McFarlane playing period music, seated outdoors in the early evening. Fabulous! ENJOY!

I haven’t been inside the museum because we came here for the Shakespeare play but I will need to visit again for a tour. How amazing it is to see a huge Tudor era mansion in the US! Seeing a Shakespeare play in this setting was really cool. We enjoyed ourselves greatly. But the play was 3 hours long and the bleacher seats were super outdated and the last hour was not the best because of that. They added a lot to the play, which can be expected but it still felt to be too long. Still really glad I went, but important to keep in mind if you plan on coming.

Great tour. Went for Richmond Concert Band and worth going for a great setting and venue. Band was great. Wine available and excellent. Would not recommend the ice cream truck as I could not score a 5 due to only three flavors available to what is on their menu and very soft and melting when served. A total difference from the high level of the rest of the event.

Old City Hall, a Victorian Gothic marvel, is an ornate building that stands out with its intricate details and soaring 59-meter clock tower. It offers a dramatic contrast to the surrounding buildings with its bright colors and pointed arches. The building's interior is just as ornate as its exterior, resembling a castle from a romance novel. Visitors can explore the first floor of this architectural gem, which boasts high Victorian Gothic design by architect Elijah E. Meyers.
The architecture of the building is that of a stone castle and aesthetically the looks are very appealing. Went on Christmas Day and we were the only ones in the area … overall experience was very good.

I visited Virginia’s Old City Hall on a Sunday morning, so the building was closed, but even from the outside it is an absolute gem. Its High Victorian Gothic style, with ornate granite details and a striking clock tower, makes it one of Richmond’s most unique pieces of architecture. Just admiring the intricate stonework and dramatic design is worth the stop. It’s conveniently located right next to Capitol Square, so you can easily combine it with a visit to the Virginia State Capitol and the other historic monuments in the area. Even if you can’t get inside, the exterior alone is a reminder of Richmond’s rich history and architectural heritage. I’ll definitely return on a weekday to see the famous interior atrium.
Jaime L — Google review
You cannot pass by this architectural marvel without taking a peek inside. Visitors are only allowed to tour the first floor but any enthusiast can spend least 20 minutes exploring the design intricacies. This Gothic Victorian was brought to life by Detroit-based architect Elijah E. Myers and without exaggeration it is in a league of its own. The building currently houses City Hall & other big hitters so be respectful and also be aware that there is a security checkpoint at entry. I was so excited to explore that I almost bypassed getting a Visitor Badge. The security and staff had a great sense of humor about it and were very friendly. No cost. A quick walk from the State Capitol and the Library of Virginia. In my opinion, Old City Hall is a must see!

An ornate building from the outside and just as ornate on the inside. You are only able to view the 1st floor. Allow just 30 minutes maximum, which includes a security check, so don't forget to take ID. Entry is free.

Outstanding architecture, and only a short walk from the Capital building and grounds. It's worth circumnavigating the building and observing the fine architectural detail and style. Unfortunately we could not gain entry as the building was gong through a total restoration. It's worth a short visit.

Nestled in the historic Shockoe Bottom neighborhood of Richmond, The Poe Museum is a must-visit for fans of Edgar Allan Poe. This charming museum resides in the Old Stone House, which proudly holds the title of the oldest residential building in the city. Established in 1922, it showcases an impressive collection of artifacts related to Poe's life and work, including manuscripts, letters, and photographs—making it home to the largest assortment of memorabilia dedicated to this iconic American writer.
We were visiting Richmond briefly and decided to pay The Poe Museum a visit. I knew about Poe from the many popular references but the visit allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of Poe as the person behind his works, his tormented personal life and how he wrote so many masterpieces in his short life. It’s interesting that Poe’s formative years were spent in Richmond, and the museum does a wonderful job of chronicling his time in Richmond, and how the place shaped his thoughts and in turn his work. The museum is neatly organized with separate sections for Poe’s family, relatives, his work, relationships, personal items, manuscripts and so much more. The museum is housed in the Old Stone House, believed to be the oldest remaining original residential structure in Richmond (built mid-1700s). Even though Poe never lived in the Old Stone house, I couldn’t help but feel the presence of Poe in there, and not just because of the two cats(who are quite social and approachable). The Poe Museum seeks to preserve and present the life, writings, and enduring mystique of Edgar Allan Poe—especially his connection to Richmond—and to contextualize them within early 19th-century Richmond life, and it does it quite brilliantly. I was intrigued to see the personal items of Poe such as a lock of his hair, waistcoat, walking stick(and other items) preserved, doing an honor to his memory. I didn’t know that there were many theories surrounding Poe’s death. The museum explains those theories wonderfully, which is a treasure if you’re a nerd like me. The museum’s layout spans multiple connected buildings, each with thematic focus (life, death, legacy) and supplemented by changing exhibits. The gift store has a sizeable collection of symbolic “Poe-y”things(ranging from T-shirts to cups and much more). The museum offers self-guided tours, audio guides, and occasional guided tours. I highly recommend visiting this great Virginia landmark and educating yourself on the wonderfully tormented soul that Poe was. Allow yourself 1-2 hours to explore the museum. A dedicated parking lot is available here, and you can also park on the street. Entry charges were 12 dollars per person when we visited in September 2025.

Superb museum experience. As we entered the shop/entrance, we were immediately greeted by helpful and friendly staff. The museum tour is very interesting and had a lot of Poe artifacts. To save time, we decided to listen to the audio tour later. To get through the three main houses, see the courtyard and shop, was about an hour. Even without listening to the tour, we learned a ton from reading to info plaques. The property is stunning. And the cats were a bonus (they were so cute and friendly). The shop is very well curated with cool Poe gifts. Visiting this museum reignited my love of Edgar’s writings. Looking forward to rereading his stories. If you are a Poe fan, this is a must visit. If you aren’t a fan, you will be. "All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.”

I avoided coming here for years because it just looked small and frankly it isn't talked about much. But Poe is a native to Richmond and it is in the oldest still-standing home in Richmond so I took my daughter. We had a blast! Only $10 per adult/ $5 for 7-17yr loss. We spent almost an hour there. Exhibits were cool and it was quite an ode to mid-18th century Richmond. Definitely worth the stop!

If you have any interest in Edgar Allen Poe, this is a must-visit! The museum is comprised of several buildings surrounding a serene interior courtyard which display a fairly astounding number of personal artifacts belonging to Poe, his sister, his wife and other family members. There are also some pop culture artifacts and modern artworks on display. In particular, there is a rather fine daguerreotype of Poe and a letter from Poe to his famous contemporary Washington Irving. Tours are self-guided, so you can take as long as you like in the exhibits or just take a seat in the garden and make friends with the black cats who reside at the museum. There is a well-stocked gift store with everything from plushies and children’s books to whiskey glasses and scholarly tomes on Poe. Admission fee with discounts for students and seniors. There is a very small parking lot at the side and additional parking on the street and in a nearby public lot. During special events it is recommended to purchase tickets in advance. Otherwise there is no need.

Don’t miss this museum if you are a Poe or literature fan! It is filled with artifacts from Poe’s world and more information about him than I knew. It’s easy to see where his macabre styles came from once you hear his story. This old house is not Poe’s in any way but is the oldest house in Richmond and interesting in itself. The gift store is so well curated! I spent forever just looking at the options. There are also some cute rescue cats around that like a scratch. Finally, the staff is great! Nevermore will you wonder if you love Edgar Allen Poe.

I stopped by the Poe Museum in downtown Richmond over the July 4th weekend on a spur-of-the-moment trip, and I’m so glad I did! This little gem exceeded all expectations. The museum is organized beautifully, with a go-at-your-own-pace layout that makes it easy to explore at your leisure. Each room offers fascinating insight into Edgar Allan Poe’s life and work, with plenty of captivating artifacts and storytelling. The gardens were absolutely lovely—a peaceful and picturesque space that felt like stepping back in time. I took some amazing photos that I’ll treasure, and it was the perfect spot to soak in the atmosphere. And the gift shop? Adorable. Packed with unique and quirky novelty items, it had everything from books to themed home decor and plush raven toys (which made perfect souvenirs for my kids—they loved them!). If you're in Richmond and have even a passing interest in literature or history, this place is a must-visit. Thoughtfully curated, welcoming, and just the right amount of spooky—thank you to the Poe Museum staff for such a memorable experience! 🖤
Jennifer L — Google review
We thoroughly enjoyed the museum. Parking was a bit congested, but we found a spot down the street. We anticipated the museum's display of artifacts once owned by Poe. They even had ravens on the light switches, which was a very pleasant touch. We are taking away a star since it seemed like the entire staff was just focused on either restocking the shelves or preparing the gardens for what seemed to be an event. We didn't expect a tour guide or any attention, but we paid to see the museum and felt like we were in their way. We truly understand that work has to be done and merchandise has to be restocked; however, we traveled a long way to see the museum, and a small amount of effort or a personable touch would have left a long-lasting pleasant experience. We even spent a considerable amount of money in the gift shop before we left. Would we go back again... questionable. We will have a video and a blog post about this location out sometime in October of 2025. Search for OurHauntedTravels.

I LOVE Poe and had a fantastic time at the Poe Museum learning more about Poe’s life and seeing firsthand relics that belonged to Poe and his family, letters hand-signed by Poe, and images of Poe and his contemporaries. It was all so fascinating! The gift shop was fabulous as well with Poe mugs, candles, magnetic poetry, jewelry, t-shirts, and every book you can imagine! At $10 per adult ticket, it was well worth the visit!

The Maggie L Walker National Historic Site in Richmond is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts. It offers tours of the grand Victorian home of Maggie L Walker, the first female African-American bank president. Visitors can learn about her remarkable life and contributions to the Civil Rights movement through a short film before exploring her historic home next door. Located in downtown's Jackson Ward neighborhood, this site is surrounded by other significant landmarks such as the Black History Museum.
My husband and I really enjoyed this tour. The history of the late Madame CJ Walker's life was nothing short of amazing. Her home is well preserved and beautiful. Sincere thanks to our tour guide, Mark Wilcox. He was kind, hospitalable and told a very knowledgeable and a passionate narration of Walker's life and legacy. We left inspired and feeling as if we got to know the Walker family personally. Thank you. 😊

I visited this home about four years ago when it was completely open. This time I went with my sister and her husband. We drove down second street to the entrance to the park and had to drive around two times before finding a parking spot on the street. The first floor is open now but you need a reservation. We didn't have one and it was close to closing time. The ranger gave us a quick tour for which we are extremely grateful. Her house is furnished with period furniture that she owned of a high class. It's well worth the time to visit. She also had a private elevator installed in her as she couldn't walk.

This is a small visitor center with some great rangers. Enjoyed chatting with one of the rangers about the local history and she gave directions for how to tour the area with the NPS app. This was a terrific walking tour since it covers a large part of the Jackson Ward. Enjoyed learning about the entrepreneurial spirit of the African American community in the Victorian era especially Maggie Walker. But the rest of the community was just as active and supportive. Definitely recommend if you're interested in Black history. Very educational.

Visited in December 2022 the week between Christmas and New Years. Parking is on street only. Had to do one lap to find a spot. There is signage on where to go. Main entrance and inside court yard area. Small exhbit area with store front. There is also movie room with 20 min video which is a must before starting tour. Tour happens right after movie which they show every hour except noon from opening to closing. There is a junior ranger program here specific for Maggie Walker National Historic site along with special cancellation stamp if you collect those. They do have their own collectable token as well. The movie was very interesting and we all learned alot. Then the tour of the house was best. Ranger who gave the tour (also DnD enthuist) was amazing and enteracted with our kids (13, 10 and 7). She explained the history of the house and the additions and the items inside which were original and belonged to Maggie Walker. Definitely worth a visit if you're in town. We spent maybe 90 mins and alot of it was interacting with the rangers and completing the junior ranger program. I would guess most people wouldn't spend more than an hour here total. Worse part was probably trying to find parking. There was one other family that toured with us and also at the time of our visit the mask mandate was reinstated so all NPS in Richmond required masks.

The John Marshall House, a historic gem nestled in Richmond, is the former residence of the esteemed fourth Chief Justice of the United States. Built in 1790, this Federal-style home stands as one of the few remaining examples of its kind and has been meticulously preserved to showcase period furnishings and architecture. As you wander through its halls, you'll gain insight into John Marshall's pivotal role in shaping American constitutional law during his tenure from 1801 to 1835.
My last visit to JM's house was probably 25 years ago. Maybe I was having a bad day, but I was underwhelmed ... This time was much different. I was greatly impressed by the architectural details and the history conveyed by our docent (Geneva) was exceptional. My step son (he's 36, I'm 73) and I asked a lot of questions (his were history related while mine were architectural) and Geneva was so well informed on everything. I think tix were around $15. Discounted for seniors. A great tour of one of RVAs oldest and most historic homes.

I knew of John Marshall but not in detail. John Marshall was the one of the first people to serve in each of the three constitutional branches: executive (Sec of State), legislative (rep) and judicial (chief justice of supreme court). He and his family have a rich history in Richmond and the early days of the USA. The tour guide was very knowledgeable with little known facts. Great tour!

I toured the John Marshall here in Richmond. The tour guide was a young history student. She has a good understang of justice Marshall and the house and family. The house is from the 1700s and is made of brick.
Moving R — Google review
The story of enslaved servants in early 19th century Richmond needs to be told. First Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and his relationship to South’s “peculiar institution,” is worth a trip from every high school student in Richmond. The ancestral research available to the staff opens the door to understanding the enslaved person’s world and the history of black Americans. Quiet little corner of Richmond, Virginia shines a light on a dark corner of our history.
Charles H — Google review
This unpretentious looking house serves up a fabulous tour. The tour guides know an incredible about about John Marshall and his time here from the 1780's until his death. At least half of the objects in the home are original to the family and the house. It is amazing to be so up close to the very items that this famous family lived in day and night. I would heartily recommend this tour if you have any history in our country, the constitution or the Supreme Court. Marshall's rulings changed the way the Supreme Court worked and established it as an equal third branch of the government.

The John Marshall house is structurally the same house from when it was originally built in the 1700’s. The History Guides here at this house have a plethora of knowledge that they share with each tour. The History Guides will ensure that all your questions are answered with the correct questions. If you are in the Richmond area I recommend that you stop by this House to learn more information about John Marshall and all the things that he did for the United States.

The 2-floor museum was small and clean, and the staff was welcoming. I liked that many aspects of the first floor were interactive. The gift shop would be much better if it had way more items and better variety. I was hoping to learn more about Richmond’s Black community, but it seemed much of the information was general Black history I was already aware of before visiting. While the 2nd floor had 2 rooms dedicated to local African Americans in healthcare, it wasn’t the type of communal or interesting local Black history I had hoped to learn. Still, I learned a few new facts, and I appreciated the art on the walls of the staircase.

On a rainy day, I decided to go to the museum instead of staying inside. But not just any museum, but the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. I can say this was a great way to spend my afternoon. I was able to tour the museum at my own pace. I had arrived early, so it was if I had a private opening all to myself 😊 I was able to go floor to floor at my own pace, admiring all the amazing work of the artists. The intricate detailing of their work was breathtaking. The bold and vibrant colors of the artwork at times I could not differentiate if it was an actual painting or photography. I do want to thank the security guard, Mr. Hamlin for introducing me to the works of a specific artist, the work of this artist is phenomenal, I do highly recommend that you go and take a look for yourself and see if you can guess which artist he introduced me to. While also immersing yourself in the rich history of the museum. And don't forget to check out the interactive wall on the 1st floor. As well as all of the other amazing things inside of this building. All in all, it was a great rainy day decision.

Richmond's Medical College of Virginia features a unique architectural gem known as the Egyptian Building. This structure stands out due to its uncommon Egyptian Revival style, which was chosen by architect Thomas Somerville Stewart for a specific reason. The Medical Department at Virginia Commonwealth University felt the need for a dedicated space for medical education, and Stewart proposed using the Egyptian architectural style. His reasoning stemmed from the belief that ancient Egypt held significant historical ties to medicine's origins.
Large building connected to VCU’s medical campus. Architecture was amazing and the columns were gigantic. Would’ve loved to walk the halls of the building but it was closed. Taking classes here would be interesting if possible. Attention to detail on the exterior decoration of the building was incredible! Many Egyptian symbols as well.

We had our sons 3rd birthday party there and it was excellent. The process was fairly easy and the kids absolutely love loved loved it!!!we used the room for eating and socializing then let the kids run around and have fun inside the museum and the out side park.such a fun place and such a great price!

A bright and entertaining space for very young to young at heart. My favorite area is the Art creation zone. There is also space outside for those who need the fresh air, or to let their kids use the few equipment. Love it here.

I have been taking my daughter here since she was one and now she is three. There’s so much for them to do at every age. She loves going every week. And there is always new exhibits every couple of months. The only downside is that some parents don’t watch their children and the museum doesn’t step in if a child is being too rough or mean so just watch out if you have a small child. Even in the animal farm meant for children 3 and younger, I’ve seen numerous times of older children being too rough in there.

We came to richmond to visit and considered a lot of museums to visit , but we were not lucky to get to any except this museum . I am so happy we did !!! This museum is great and has a lot of history to it and also modern things. I always loved to learn about how people lived centuries ago. Our tour guide was Chris and he is just the best tour guide you would want ! He is very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and interesting to listen to . You could just listen to him forever , very good guy and he is gold at what he does ! Great experience, the museum is amazing! Thank you !

Was there for a free concert in the garden by Virginia Opera. Music and atmosphere was great. Found out that the museum admission is also free on Thursdays! Got to poke around the photo gallery and costume display downstairs. Will definitely be back to see the things I missed upstairs.

Visited the Valentine Museum with my son today. Conveniently located close to VCU and within walking distance of pay for street parking and pay parking structure. Many interesting artifacts and photos of Richmond. The Wickham-Valentine home is classic and exquisite. Restored to nearly perfect condition reminiscent of the time. Our docent was extremely knowledgeable about the neoclassical decorations that adorned the home. Highly recommend headed over to Wickham-Valentine home and Valentine Museum for a day of fun and learning. Truly a hidden gem within the hustle and bustle of Richmond.

We attended a Grown Up Scavenger Hunt event and it was glorious. I look forward to returning with our kiddos. There was a vintage print making activity. We toured the Wickham House just before dusk. And, then, we got to pace ourselves and do a Scavenger Hunt in the Valentine Museum. If you live, work, and/or visit here, and want to understand more about the extensive history of the Richmond Metropolitan Region, come here! Explore here!

This Museum was a great experience. There was a good gift shop inside with a good selection. There was over 100,000 items out on exhibit here. They are constantly updating the exhibits. The staff is extremely friendly and has a great deal of knowledge that they share with you if you have any questions. They exhibits are presented in a very elegant way. This Museum encompasses three buildings on this street.

Wilton House Museum, a Georgian mansion built in 1753 and relocated to its current hilltop location in 1933, is a significant historical site in Richmond. It served as the residence for Founding Fathers and now stands as the city's only 18th-century public plantation home. The museum boasts an impressive collection of over 1,400 objects including silvers, ceramics, textiles, paintings, documents, and furniture from the 17th to 19th centuries.
My visit to Wilton House Museum was fantastic! Our guide was engaging and tailored the tour to our interests—architecture and the history of the enslaved people. The house was beautifully decorated for Christmas, and we’re still talking about the hedgehog cake (a marzipan dessert, not a cake!). The home is well-preserved, and learning about its relocation was fascinating. Highly recommend for history lovers—well worth the visit!

Wonderful place to visit. Guides are very knowledgeable about the house and family. Great rxample of early architecture. Beautifully preserved structure in original interior colors. We had a personal tour. There was a collection of antique furniture including a portable bed used by mobile officers during the revolution.

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, situated in Richmond, Virginia, is the principal church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond. Constructed between 1903 and 1906, this magnificent cathedral features Romanesque architecture and stunning stained-glass windows. Located near Virginia Commonwealth University, it offers a serene escape for students amidst the bustling campus life. The interior is described as gorgeous and tranquil, with a majestic atmosphere that captivates visitors.
Absolutely stunning cathedral. Magnificent art, sculptures, and stained glass windows. It almost gives a foretaste of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The mass was amazing as well. Very beautifully conducted and further complimented by the cathedral's organ. It's definitely a place worth visiting, even if it's not for the mass, but at least for its grandeur.

Great structure, wonderful acoustics, and a delightful Priest. We enjoy traveling for Sunday Mass and found ourselves in Richmond and decided to come here. Great celebration. Built in 1903 from a single private funding source, it was complete in 1905. Compare this to other major Cathedral in the east coast that took 10 15 years to complete. Nice facility.

You get glimpses of how spectacular this cathedral is when you look at the outside but nothing really prepares you for the splendor that awaits inside. Decided to take Mass here as the cathedral was at the time closed at all other times thanks to Covid. (This has since changed ) So glad I took the time to do that. This is a beautiful building and is everything you would expect to find in a catholic house of worship. The architecture and decorations are splendid and well worth a look whether you are Catholic or not.

It's one of the most beautifully landscaped / hardscaped shopping parks I've ever seen. I would love to be on the event committee if there is one. I want to first say that this is such a beautiful mall. Went there with my kids just to walk around for a bit. The mall wasn’t open yet, but because I had an appointment close by which I was super early for, I thought I would let the kids play in the little play area. My child fell And hurt himself, I asked for first aid and the security guard was super nice, but came back with only Band-Aids because a big establishment like this had NO REAL FIRST AID KIT, I mean nothing. He was super apologetic, which I appreciate and just figured, I’ll just go find a store to get ointment and alcohol to put on the bruise so it wouldn’t get affected. But I’m really disappointed that such a nice place, such a huge mall that I’m sure has incidents day in and day out is not even prepared to give first aid to a small bruise much less a bigger injury. Do better Stony Point Fashion Mall!!!

This is a really beautiful space. It is an outdoor mall with some very interestingly designed spaces. Much of The furniture is sculptural, and there are nice fountains as well. Most of the stores are upscale, and expensive, but it would be easy to visit and just walk around for free. There is a fountain and park area for kids to play.

An open air mall tailored to higher paying customers looking for Tiffany & Co., and Saks Fifth Avenue with a few regular mall stores mixed in, like Bath & Body Works and Yankee Candle. It is always clean, typically not over crowded, and decorated nicely for the holidays. We actually prefer this mall to other indoor malls, simply for the ambiance. Dogs are welcome, lots of seating to just sit and chat with friends, dining options are nice and there is an ice rink in the winter or splash pad park in the summer.

I recently visited the Richmond Railroad Museum, and it was an exceptional experience! The museum offers a fascinating look into the history of railroads in Virginia and the South, with a great mix of interactive exhibits, vintage trains, and informative displays. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. I especially enjoyed exploring the restored trains. Whether you're a history enthusiast, train lover, or just looking for something unique to do in Richmond, this museum is definitely worth a visit. Highly recommend!

Great museum if you are a big time train fan. Richmond has a rich history of railway locomotives and railways. The guides are awesome, definitely worth the $10 entry fee. You can see how railway engines, instruments and communication devices developed over the last two centuries. They also have a few real engines. Definitely worth the time and effort, very unique.

This is a very nice museum with welcoming friendly volunteer touch guides that will show you everything. They will take you into the trains outside as well.

Great little museum! Our kids were slightly too little for it, but there were still plenty of things to keep them occupied. I would probably recommend kids over 5 to enjoy all the exhibits. Price of admission was very reasonable for the experience. The staff was very friendly and attentive!

I talked with Bill a proud Navy Veteran, about the history of standardized times established by the railroads. He was very knowledgeable about trains and their history. He told me a railcar could hold 4 times the weight of a semi truck trailer. The set up for the museum was small, with a great amount of detail in each exhibit. There was also a very detailed model train room, which I spent 15 minutes watching the train traverse.

I went without knowing what to expected to see. I was very pleasantly surprised by this museum. The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. The train model room was one of the best ones I have ever seen. It has authentic street seen of a bygone Richmond va with buildings and cars on Broad st trains running around mountains and through cities. The walls are filled with train cars. There are several train cars you can walk through. The museum is well worth seeing. The price is 10.00 for adults and 8.00 for seniors. I bought a family membership and it don't expire until the end of 2022.

The Ebenezer Baptist Church was an historic African-American church located in the heart of Virginia's historic black community. It was built in 1868 and replaced an earlier frame church. The church played a major role in the founding of Hartshorn Memorial College, now known as Virginia Union University. Today, the Ebeneezer Baptist Church is still active and remains a significant part of Virginia's history.
I visited this location with my family to celebrate a life that was well lived and had a positive impact on the lives of so many in this area. The National is a beautifully renovated 1920s theater located in the heart of Richmond, offering a unique atmosphere for live performances. With its ornate opera-house interiors and modern upgrades, it provides an unforgettable experience for both performers and audiences. The venue hosts a variety of events, including medium-sized music shows, musicals, dance troupes, and local acts. Originally built in 1923, The National has been a hub for live music for many years.
Lots of parking options and easy in and out of the venue because of a variety of entry points. There's a full bar for getting the perfect beverage. The opening act started a few minutes early and the sound was good and loud for them and the headliner. Balcony views are excellent, if you get high enough (third row and above) to see over the people at tables in the front row, where it's no longer raked.

Yes, the parking is iffy but the staff was so nice. Shoutout to Greg and the guys working that handed out waters. The venue was small but comfortable, slanted floor and multiple bar areas. The staff stayed attentive and was proactive in keeping the crowd contained.

Main Street Station is a historic and iconic landmark in Richmond, known for its stunning French Ecole des Beaux-Arts architecture. The station, which reopened recently, now hosts various events such as wine tastings, art shows, and even weddings. Its clock tower is a significant part of the city's skyline and offers fantastic photo opportunities with its warm stone tones against the clear blue sky.
Richmond's Main Train Station, is a relatively well-maintained and accessible facility. Upon entering, the station's historic charm stands out with its large, open waiting areas and vintage architectural touches. It’s not the largest station, but it offers basic amenities including a café, restrooms, and a small gift shop. The station could benefit from clearer signage, especially for first-time visitors, but it's generally easy to navigate. Though not overly busy, the staff are helpful, and there is often a calm, low-key atmosphere. Parking can be convenient, though it might fill up during peak travel times. Overall, the Richmond Main Train Station offers a functional and efficient experience for travelers, combining historic elements with the essential services one would expect from a smaller regional hub.

The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. When I arrived, they were having an event, but the staff took me to the elevator so I could easily navigate the station with my luggage, making my experience even better. It's a great spot for a smooth and comfortable travel experience!

Main Street Station – Richmond, VA On Sunday, June 22, 2025, my husband and I exchanged vows at the breathtaking Main Street Station. The venue’s historic architecture and soaring ceilings created a timeless, romantic atmosphere that made our ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception feel like something out of a dream. Though trains passed through during the day, they added a touch of charm and character to the experience—reminding us that love, like life, is always in motion. Kerese was a wonderful point of contact, helping us coordinate with multiple vendors and ensuring the day ran smoothly. Couples considering this venue should know it’s a raw space—you’ll need to bring in your own caterer, rentals (tables, chairs, etc.), and vendor insurance. But with the right team, the possibilities are endless. Our wedding was everything we hoped for and more. Surrounded by family, friends, and the beauty of this iconic Richmond landmark, we created memories we’ll cherish forever.

Huge venue with massive windows showing a scenic city view. I love watching the train roll by! I've been to this venue multiple times for different events. There's an elevator you can take to the second floor instead of using the winding stair case. However, for the outside entrance to get into the building, you must step your way up the stairs. It's a great place to hold major events!
Taniki R — Google review
This is a train station but more of a museum. There are not any of the usual amenities available. Much of the signage encourages renting the space for special events like weddings. It is a beautiful space but not user friendly for the traveler who unfortunately booked their ticket from this location. I will give the bathrooms 5 stars for cleanliness, nearly prestine.
Colleen C — Google review
Love the architecture of the building. The facilities are real nice and clean. They do have outlets for charging your devices and they do have public bathrooms that are clean as well with good security.

I had the best time this past weekend photographing one of my gorgeous couples at the property. WOW! Inside and out is stunning. I loved that it wasn’t crowded and the guests and vendors had ample space to move about. The options for the space to be broken up was fabulous! Endless photo possibilities! Tanya with starry night events is phenomenal, there was nothing short of perfection in any inch of the day. Can’t wait to photograph more weddings here at the space.

Monumental Church, an architectural gem completed in 1814, stands as a poignant tribute to the victims of a devastating theater fire that occurred three years prior. Designed by a protégé of Thomas Jefferson, this stunning structure showcases a harmonious blend of Greek and Roman styles. Once serving as an Episcopal Church until 1965, it now primarily functions as a wedding venue while also being associated with the Medical College of Virginia.
Cool architecture and a really interesting historical story!
Rita P — Google review
As a memorial and resting place for the dead, it is amazing. As a meeting venue, it's a bit dark. Fortunately, Historic Richmond, who owns the property, is looking for an adaptive reuse for the space. Right now it is primarily a wedding venue. I'm not sure it is open to the public at all actually, but there is a marker out front telling the history of the tragedy it memorializes, who is buried there, and who designed it. Parking is in the lot behind the state government building *directly* across the street (turn right at the light).
Ronda B — Google review
Had our daughter's wedding there and it was a perfect venue. Lauren, the coordinator did a perfect job keeping everyone calm and running as planned. Adding the historic background of the church to the program gave everyone something to read before the ceremony started. Ample free parking across the street. We would recommend it.
Skip G — Google review
I am a wedding officiant. I visit quite a few wedding venues. I had the privilege of marrying a delightful couple at Monumental Church on New Year's Eve--one of the best venues I have had the privilege of visiting. The architecture is stunning and the inside of the church is a blank canvas. The wedding took place at 6:30 in the evening. Monumental has limited lighting, so the couple hired a lighting company to provide just enough lighting to give the place a warm, spiritual ambiance. The couple's florist embedded little battery operated votives in the flower arrangements. Lovely. Lynne, the wedding coordinator, was absolutely a gem to work with. Parking was not an issue, as I worried it would be.. There is after-hour parking right across the street. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a unique wedding experience.
