Tapas restaurant
Mas Tapas is a vibrant Spanish restaurant that brings the authentic and artisanal style of cooking to the United States. The eatery offers a lively atmosphere with an industrial-chic setting, making it perfect for a night out with friends. Known for its small plates meant for sharing, Mas Tapas serves up an exciting array of flavors, including renowned dishes like bacon-wrapped dates and creative combinations such as oil-poached shrimp and chorizo deviled eggs.
Fantastic food. Must tries include the artichoke hearts, carne asada, bacon wrapped dates, papas bravas, and the shrimp. Great flavor, great vibes. Was not a huge fan of the brussel sprouts. Would definitely go again to try other (and some of the same) dishes

By far one of the top 3 restaurants in CVille. Sitting at the bar in front of the kitchen is definitely the best seat in the house. However when we went the guy working at the end of the kitchen was chewing on his fingers, on his phone and in and out of gloves all night long as well as his fingers in his hair and face. We are restaurant people. The fact it was not called out was upsetting. We didn't let it bother us, as we even tipped the kitchen because it was so enjoyable to watch them pump that food out and maintain such poise and discipline.

Food received a three because I felt everything was under seasoned and could have used more of everything. Concept it great and a good place to socialize with friends and family. Service seemed like they didn't want to be there. We almost ordered the entire menu and was told it would be coursed out but it all came around the same time and ran out of room on the table. Empty plates were not bussed to make room. Atmosphere is amazing. I really like the feel of the place and like I said before it is the perfect place to drink, eat and socialize with friends.

I secured reservations well in advance for my bday dinner. I'm so glad I did! It was amazing! Everything we ate was absolutely perfect! We ordered 9 plates for 2 people and took home 4 to-go boxes! We definitely over ordered, but we wanted to try so many things! Tapas sizes are perfect for 2. I even scored a free dessert for my birthday! This place is in my top 3 best restaurants in Charlottesville. Can't wait to go back! The staff was friendly and efficient. Parking can be difficult to find, as it's all street parking.
Jessica T — Google review
We were disappointed with the overall experience. While the food was good our service was not. Since we're a party of 4 from out of town, we wanted to try several dishes on the menu. We were advised to put everything in at once and they would course it out for us...WRONG! I should have listened to to my instincts, because our 12 dishes came out in rapid succession, as most tapas does. We simply couldn't eat fast enough and our table quickly ran out of room. The server was generally inattentive and just shy of rude. Perhaps our experience would have been different with server.

The hostess and staff at Mas went above and beyond to give us a wonderful dining experience. There was a mix up with our reservation but they adjusted quickly to make things right. We had a person who was gluten feee and another person who was a vegetation. They brought specialized menus to accommodate our dietary needs. The food was absolutely delicious, and service was perfect. Every single dish we ordered was a culinary treat. Highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Charlottesville.

2024: The food gets better and better. From our most recent visit, the favorites were the pan tomato (a new menu item and amazing), bocadillo, coliflor and carne asade. (And always papas bravas~ rivaling the best we had in Spain!) 2023: There’s a reason they are always so busy! It’s so different now that they take reservations. We didn’t have one so were stuck at the bar this time. It’s a bit too hectic to be enjoyable for conversation. But no complaints about the food, though! The patatas bravas are always a favorite with us. Rioja is great. I didn’t like the sangria as much. Bread and olive oil ~ nothing compares to that Spanish olive oil. I didn’t enjoy the flavor of the albondigas (meatballs); in fact, from the menu description, I didn’t expect them to be meatballs. The halloumi cheese was different but delicious! The sauce was unexpectedly slightly sweet. The shrimp was delicious, and the sauce made it perfect. All in all, another incredible meal at Mas!

Nestled in a serene setting with brick walls and barn wood, C & O is a celebrated restaurant in Charlottesville's Downtown Mall. With a history as long as its beautiful menu, it's known for anniversary and special occasion dinners.
Extraordinary dinner experience at C&O. The space itself is unique and inviting, a contemporary atmosphere in a historic building. Our server was knowledgeable, warm, and capable. The food was exceptional. We started with the bibb salad and scallops. The salad was fresh and flavorful and more than enough to share. The scallops were perfectly seared. I had the duck confit with ricotta gnocchi and it exceeded my expectations in every way. My friend enjoyed the lamb pastry. Neither of us left a crumb behind! We almost changed our dinner plans at the last minute, considering a more casual experience, but we both felt delighted that we stuck with our original instincts. I highly recommend C & O for a date night, or a night out with friends, family, or anyone who enjoys delicious food.

What a beautiful experience!! Top notch, warm, romantic atmosphere and staff that are always making sure you have what you need in a timely fashion. The food was served fresh, hot and of the highest quality. We were so impressed from the appetizer to the dessert, dry rose’ wine and homemade bread. Such a fine dining experience as we passed through Charlottesville over night. We had the wild stripped bass, scallops, bread, and the dessert!! Just heavenly. Kudos to a well managed and customer satisfaction priority restaurant with the warmest of feels. We will return!!

This is such a cool place to eat in downtown Charlottesville. The menu changes fairly regularly, but everything is always delicious. Their homemade bread is amazing, especially with the salted butter. I ordered the duck confit with gnocchi this time and loved it. I wish there had been more of the gnocchi, but still happy I ordered it. The building is beautiful and rustic, it’s a great place for a special occasion (although they don’t offer a free dessert or anything like that, we asked). Friendly staff and very close to the water street parking garage. Be sure to make a reservation.

Came here to celebrate my husband and I anniversary 🎊 I love the old house restaurant and vibe! The little fishes 🐟 from the aquarium at the bar were cute. But specially we loved the food. It was delicious 😋 I highly recommend Scallops to start your dinner.

Fluke Crudo, Beef Tartar, Veal Sweetbrreads, Caesar Salad, Duck Confit Gnocchi, Wild Berry Sundae Crumble. Food and service were both excellent. Presentation and flavors are lovely. The service was professional, attentive and knowledgeable. The atmosphere was cozy.

Beautiful place, very romantic ambiance, very luxurious food. We had the scallops, crab cake, Yukon gold ravioli, fettuccine with lobster, and the steak chinois. The sauces are absolutely amazing and make every bite a party in your mouth. The customer service was excellent. We also had the almond cake and blackberry sundae with caramelized pistachios...very elegant and a great way to finish off our meal. 😋

What a cozy wonderful restaurant! We liked the atmosphere and the friendly staff, the food and wines are outstanding. We had scallops with capers and sweetbread with Pinot Noir from Willamette, a perfect match. Bavette Chinois steak excellent as well. Finally sticky Toffee with Madeira, to die for. 5 points!
Martin M — Google review
No vegetarian entrees were offered, so I was left having a bib salad and a pasta appetizer from these starters menu. In 2025, is it too much to ask for nice restaurants to actually have a good vegetarian entree on the menu? The The salad and pasta appetizer were nothing to write home about, but the sticky, toffee pudding dessert was delicious. Definitely not a first choice for vegetarians which is just fine but sometimes vegetarians have to accompany a larger party. So please do better with at least one real vegetarian option

Restaurant
The Ivy Inn Restaurant offers a refined dining experience in an early 19th-century house with a charming Old Virginia ambiance. This family-owned establishment has been serving locavore American cuisine for over 20 years, featuring a menu inspired by locally available ingredients. Situated just west of downtown Charlottesville and near the University of Virginia, it's an ideal spot for a romantic dinner or a relaxing meal after exploring the city.
Dined here for my birthday and left super happy! The food and service, both excellent. The setup is very cozy and even though there were a lot of people, it felt private due to the multi floor setting. Our server, Robert was awesome and he made some great suggestions. They started with some fresh warm bread, butter and a couple of mini pimento crostinis. Then we got a couple of cocktails and the mains. Their sticky toffee dessert was SO good. All in all, highly recommend!

The Ivy Inn nails that perfect balance of charm and fine dining. It’s the kind of spot you take your bougie Northern Virginia relatives to when you want to impress—and it absolutely delivers. Yes, it’s on the pricier side, but the food justifies every dollar. The corn ravioli might be the best ravioli I’ve ever had—rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The meats were cooked to perfection, and the trout? Hands down the best representation of fish I’ve ever tasted. Served in a cozy, historic inn with great ambiance, Ivy Inn manages to feel both upscale and inviting. A Charlottesville gem.

Excellent experience here from beginning to end. We are here visiting my niece who is graduating this spring and what a wonderful meal to celebrate her accomplishment. We sampled many things on the menu and everything was excellent. Creamy Five Onion Soup (with Country Ham & Membrillo Grilled Cheese) - excellent start with a rich, complex savory soup. I didn't even miss the mini grilled ham and cheese accompaniment they forgot :( But my wife enjoyed mine and hers with her serving of soup later in the meal. Sweet Potato Empanadas (Black Beans, Chipotle Salsa, Avocado, Lime Cream) - I am not sure if this was the exact empanadas we had but they were excellent, especially the accompanying sauce. The Ivy Mixed Greens (Beets, Cukes, Radishes, Vella Dry Jack Cheese, Creamy Basil Vinaigrette) - solid salad, great creamy dressing. Stuffed Date Salad (Romaine, Kale, Radicchio, Goat Cheese, White Balsamic, Pistachios) - a little drier as a salad, couple have used some more balsamic but the goat cheese and dates were excellent. Grilled Certified Angus Beef Tenderloin (Potato-Short Rib Pierogi, Creamed Greens, Cabernet Sauce) - excellent cut of steak, very tender and flavorful and loved the creamed greens and the pierogi was a nice touch. Creamy Mac'n Three Cheese (Cheddar, Vlahotiri, Parmigiano) - my daughter and all of us loved their Mac n Cheese, hard to overstate how tasty this simple dish was. Service was friendly, engaged, and helpful. Atmosphere in this cozy, rustic but still refined setting was great.
Saminda W — Google review
Absolutely fantastic food, great wine selection including lots of local offerings, and none of the pretense that you’d typically expect of a restaurant of this caliber. We got the tuna crudo to start - beautiful balance of umami, salt, sweetness, and spice. For entrees, she got the chicken breast cordon bleu - loved the salt bomb from the country ham balanced against the creamy potatoes. I couldn’t decide on a pasta, so I got Italian surf and turf - half-orders of the gnocchi bolognese and the shrimp and crab pasta. Both were fantastic, showing off the protein without letting it dominate the dish. We closed with the sticky toffee pudding. If you could coalesce bourbon into a perfect dessert, this would be it. Combine all that with stellar service, and I’m perfectly willing to overlook the close proximity and audible conversations of other patrons. Overall, I highly recommend Ivy Inn for a great meal on any notable occasion.

Absolute gem. I’m embarrassed to say I’ve lived in Charlottesville yet never been here. This is the first time and an exciting to chapter of date nights have begun! Top notch from start to end. A wonderful culinary experience and a phenomenal menu to boot! I could keep writing words that could describe the time my wife and I had but my thumbs would be blistered. Do yourself a favor and experience a truly mouth watering experience and go to The Ivy Inn.

We celebrated our anniversary and had special menus. Enjoyed an amazing dinner and desserts. Thanks for making the night extra special.
Harvey S — Google review
I hesitate to call an evening perfect, but the Ivy Inn in Charlottesville Virginia delivered that and much more. This wonderful restaurant was beautiful outside and the interior was incredible. When making the reservations a few days earlier, we were asked if this was a special occasion and I told them that we were celebrating our 4th anniversary. We had done a lot of research and heard that the Ivy Inn would exceed our expectations. When we arrived, we were shown to our table and presented with customized menus celebrating our anniversary. The staff also provided champagne for us just to get the evening going. I had the crab and shrimp tagliolini which was served with tomato basil butter, lemon parmesan, and garlic bread crumbs. This entree was superb! My husband had the Maryland jumbo lump crab cake with a hash brown potato, vegetable slaw, and a homemade remoulade sauce. With apologies to our family in Maryland, this was the best crab cake he ever had. For dessert, I had a creme brulee that was sheer perfection and my husband had an amazing key lime pie. What made this evening magical was the impeccable service that we received and the professionalism displayed by the Ivy Inn staff. Also, we looked at each other and said that for each of us this was the first time we had ever seen an establishment execute a dinner with this level of flavor without some detail that could have been better. Folks, this food and service is as good as it gets. We plan to come back again on this day next year. If you ever travel to Charlottesville and want an exquisite eating experience, we highly recommend this place. 😎❤️

Family restaurant
Citizen Burger Bar is a popular dining spot in Charlottesville, Virginia that prides itself on serving top-quality burgers and offering an extensive selection of craft beers. The restaurant emphasizes using locally sourced ingredients, including buns from local bakeries, grass-fed beef, and Virginia cheese. While the wait for a table may be long, the house salad with fresh ingredients like grilled chicken and bacon is worth it. In addition to their renowned burgers, the restaurant also offers a variety of legendary salads.
I was on a mission to find the best burger in Charlottesville, and Citizen Burger Bar came up as the top pick—and wow, it absolutely lived up to the hype. Everything about our visit was fantastic. The star of the show was the Citizen Burger itself: stacked with fresh, flavorful ingredients and topped off with a crispy fried pickle that was a delicious surprise. I swapped out the fries for onion rings, and it was totally worth it—perfectly crispy and packed with flavor. The location couldn’t be better—right in the heart of downtown Charlottesville, on the pedestrian mall full of charm, energy, and people-watching. It really captures the vibe of the town and the university. One huge bonus: they’re extremely dog-friendly. They brought out a big bowl of cold water for our two pups without us even asking—such a thoughtful touch! My wife ordered the beet salad and loved every bite. We also appreciated the cold bottle of water left at the table to keep our glasses topped off—small detail, but it made the whole experience feel that much more relaxed and attentive. From start to finish, this was one of the most enjoyable dining experiences we’ve had in a while. Great food, awesome atmosphere, and top-notch service. Highly recommend—easily a five-star spot!

I am *very* picky about cleanliness so take what I say with a grain of salt. The food is fantastic, best burger I've ever had (and I've had a lot of them), however I found the place to be a bit unhygienic. The bathroom sinks have stuff in them, we got given a plate with a few visible fragments of food, and there was a bartender sneezing all over the bar for a good 10 minutes, and they were covering their mouth with their hand, and even then didn't quite succeed to cover it every time. If you're sneezing more than a few times, please leave areas where food/drink is prepared :) With all that being said, even though all of that pushes me away, I would still give this place another chance in the future simply because I had the best burger I've ever had here. Good job chefs :)

If you’re looking for a great high-quality burger, this is the spot for you! The Steakhouse Burger was delicious, and the beef was cooked just right and not overly greasy. I got a custom burger with the garlic aioli, which I’d definitely order again. The sides, especially the sweet potato fries, hit the spot. The location is on the main strip, and has outdoor seating.
Kenny C — Google review
Cool looking burger joint in downtown Charlottesville, VA. We opted to eat outside because the weather was great. The service was decent but our fries were forgotten, which was probably a good thing, since the custom burger and grilled cheese we got were pretty pricey.
Jessie C — Google review
The staff is friendly and while the wait for a table can be short the bar is normally open except for Friday and Saturday. The Mushroom and Swiss burger is good but the deep fried fries that come with most burgers really taste of the old style of cooking. The Sailor Jerry rum and coke is a fair bit better than a captain and coke. If you can make it for the happy hour or lunch you will find it worth the trip. Large screens for sports sit up on the wall behind the long bar.

We stopped here on our way through Charlottesville.... It was an easy place to find seating, the service was outstanding and the food was great. Definitely try this place out when you are in town!

Our party of 4 went to Citizen Burger Bar on a Saturday afternoon after strolling through downtown Cville. We got hungry, smelled yummy food and decided to grab some burgers. The other place we wanted to go to was packed, so we went to CBB instead, which turned out to be a mistake. We should have waited at the other burger joint instead. I am giving the food 3 stars because the fries were really good. Regular, cheesy and sweet potato, all of them were crispy and delicious. Not too salty, not too oily, just what we love. The burgers and sandwiches were meh. Mediocre at best. I had the Hotness and it was very greasy. The patty was overcooked and dry, the brioche was dry, the onions were too thick and chewy. I didn't finish it and that's something I never do. I always finish my burger if it's good. The grilled cheese tasted like plastic. The chicken sandwich was better but it had way too much mayo, the onion rings were huge and the bacon was practically nonexistent. The birthday cake slice was huge, but tasted old and stale. We paid over $100 for food and drinks and left hungry. Our waiter took forever to take our order and even more time to bring it out. I had to waive twice to ask him to come to our table to finally ask for the bill. The waitress at the table next to us was super nice, professional and fast. Ours was a disaster. On top of his speed, he smelled like weed and the music was annoyinly loud. I'm 100% sure we will not return to CBB again. Such a shame because it looks like a nice place.

Gastropub
Restaurant
The Local is a popular downtown Charlottesville restaurant known for its New American cuisine and extensive wine selection. The farm-to-table gastropub offers a diverse menu featuring fresh ingredients sourced from local farms. Dishes include Caromont Goat Cheese Salad, Fried Cauliflower and Brussels Sprouts, Crispy Shrimp, Berkshire pork chop, locally-reared meatloaf, crispy trout, local braised short ribs, and gnocchi bolognese.
Nice staff and very accomodating (we were late for our reservation). Our waitress was very knowledge about the menu and made great recommendations. The crab soup (cream of crab) was amazing. Almost had like a buttery taste to it. Perfect flavor and for $8 for a bowl, can’t beat it! I enjoyed the steak fries but wish it was cut some more. It was flavorful and cooked perfectly. I didn’t try the salmon but my friend cleared their plate so I think it was a hit! Delicious drinks too and the ambiance chill, small, and very much like a local spot.
Lola ( — Google review
We went to try something new for restaurant week, and had some great food, but overall it was very inconsistent so I'll rate each dish. Drinks, my wife had a beer so no rating there, I had a cherry blossom. Forgot to take a picture, but it was very tasty (Catoctin Creek Gin, Saint Germain, Lemon Juice, local honey and Bordeaux cherry juice). Garnish was a bit boring (one cherry in the bottom) and double straining would have gone a long way as mine had a lot of little ice bits leftover from shaking 4/5 For appetizers we had the Bison Empanada and Fried Cauliflower & Brussels Sprouts. Bison Empanada was very good. The dough was crispy and the cilantro crema was delicious. The filling could have had a bit more flavor so the empanada could stand on it's own, but overall very good 4/5 Fried Cauliflower & Brussels Sprouts was the miss for this course. Presentation was nice, but the brussels sprouts were quite undercooked, so very hard and the sauce was completely inappropriate for an otherwise elevated plate of veggies. They called it a "sriracha aioli", but it was burger/fry sauce. Tasty on it's own, but did not fit this dish at all. 2/5 For entrees we had the Bison Short Ribs and Buttermilk-Brined Fried Chicken. Bison short ribs were quite delicious. The short rib was fork tender, the sauce was good, and the mashed potatoes were a nice side. The carrots were barely cooked though and far too hard. 4.5/5 Buttermilk-Brined Fried Chicken was not as good. Presentation looked good enough, but hiding bone in chicken between the slaw and mashed potatoes surely didn't make it easier to eat... The chicken itself, cooked to perfection. The skin was crispy, meat was juicy, perfect. The breading definitely could have been seasoned more though as there wasn't much going on flavor wise. This didn't bode well for the rest of the dish as the "southern slaw" was barely dressed at all and the "hot sauce gastrique" was a small swipe of buffalo/franks/whatever you want to call it. The potatoes were good (seemingly the same as the short rib ones), but surely didn't provide the flavor the dish needed. Like the brussels sprouts & cauliflower, the sauce just seemed so out of place and this dish really needed something to give it some flavor. A better dressed slaw and a proper sauce would elevate this dish so much, but as we had it 2.5/5 For dessert we had both options the Flourless Chocolate Cake and the Basque Cheesecake Flourless Chocolate Cake, no notes. It was smooth, creamy, and delicious. 5/5 Basque Cheesecake was bad, actually may have been the first cheesecake I've ever not finished. It seemed like it was overcooked as it was quite grainy and you could see the top was quite dark under the berries. It was also served to us crazy cold, like slightly above freezing. Flavor wasn't bad, but execution was off. 1.5/5 So yeah, depending on the adventure you chose, you either got really good food or would have been quite disappointed, a true roller coaster of courses was experienced.

Great little place in C-Ville. The food is terrific, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. We had the cheese board and cauliflower/Brussel sprout appetizer. The appetizer was really good, strongly recommend. The mushroom pasta and the fried chicken breast were well cooked. A ton of mushrooms in the pasta. Very good wine list thats not overpriced or overwhelming. Very worth the visit.

Went here from a recommendation. Had the steak and meatloaf. Personally not my favorite steak, was underwhelming and bits of grisle. The meatloaf was great. Drinks on the pricey side at 16 bucks and weren't anything special. Sat outside with our dog. Believe a staff member came out to smoke right in front of the restaurant and us eating, was a bit off setting having to smell that.

We picked The Local based on the menu options. We were traveling and didn't want anything fast, so we looked up food near me. The Local popped up, was rated high and we always enjoy seeing fresh food options and unique entrees, so decided to give them a try. When we arrived, the ambience appeared to be casual and comfortable. Our focus is always the food, service, and ambiance. All areas met my expectations. I was excited about the crab soup, but unfortunately sold out. My other appetizer options were crispy shrimp and fried cauliflower & Brussel sprouts. The flavor of the aioli and seaweed salad on the crispy shrimp was top notch flavorful as well as Sriracha aioli on cauliflower dish. I would have been happy with both as my main dish. Our entree was Crispy Fried Trout, a unique twist on fish. I've never had fish with okra. It made the dish a bit heavy, but I enjoyed it. The fish was perfectly cooked and fresh, it was the rice and sauce that made it heavy. Not sure if I would order again as I prefer my fish with light flavors. Overall, we enjoyed dining here and our server was pleasant, attentive and personable. Give it a try, I'm sure you will enjoy your experience.

Hands down, just had the most amazing experience at the Local. Booked a reservation for dinner to celebrate an occasion and purchased some extras for the table to make it special through Jeff the manager. When we arrived he had given us a special room all to ourselves along with the extras we had purchased. We had an incredible staff (especially Cam) waiting on us hand and foot . The food and drinks were incredibly good: meatloaf, truffles pasta, steak with a blue cheese bechamel, pb chocolate brownie sundae and carrot cake. Always have loved this place but it is now permanently on our best of best list. Thank you !!

I have been here once for a wedding rehearsal dinner and once for dinner with a friend. The staff both times have been kind and taken great care of us, even being a large party. The brussel sprouts are top notch, could have used a bit more sauce but cooked perfectly and pair well with the cauliflower. The chicken and mac n cheese was wonderful, perfectly crispy and not too heave. Thank you for the lovely experiences.

Warm, brick-walled spot with that perfect mix of comfort and class. The fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese were killer, and the bourbon-glazed pork chop was cooked to perfection. Service was easygoing, the crowd laid-back, and everything felt genuine — just real Virginia hospitality done right.

Nestled in the Main Street Market, Orzo Kitchen & Wine Bar offers a cozy industrial-chic setting to savor Mediterranean cuisine. Drawing inspiration from Italy, Greece, Spain, and the South of France, their menu features delectable orzo alongside branzino, risotto, and international delights like coca de trampo. The restaurant's ambiance reflects the owners' Mediterranean travels with soulful cooking and warm hospitality.
Orzo is a lovely restaurant with a thoughtful, seasonal approach to dining and genuinely kind service. The moment we sat down, we were welcomed with a dish of house-made olives—briny, bold, and a great way to start the meal. They rotate their menu seasonally, and the current summer offerings were fresh and ingredient-forward, leaning Mediterranean but not strictly Italian. One standout was the salmon crudo—thinly sliced raw salmon paired with capers, evoking the richness of salmon lox but with the clean presentation of sashimi. It was a surprising and elegant bite that felt both decadent and refreshing. Although not on the summer menu, I ordered the beef tenderloin, and it was cooked perfectly to my liking. The rich, savory gravy elevated the dish and made it a satisfying contrast to the lighter starters. Orzo strikes a great balance between casual elegance and inventive cuisine. I loved the vibe, and I’d absolutely come back.

We enjoyed a business dinner for 9 people and had an fantastic experience. The atmosphere is great, the service is 1st class, and the food was excellant. They also had a great bar, albeit with limited seating, but looked like a great spot to hang and enjoy a nice meal. The Martini's are also very good. I look forward to eating here again. Appropriate for business, casual, and date nights.

My first restaurant post-move-in to Charlottesville, and it was FANTASTIC! I cannot recommend Orzo enough, and I’m already starting to feel the charm of Virginia. The food was delicious, and so was the atmosphere. Shoutout as well to our server, Stephen, who made the night quite enjoyable. A friendly face is always comforting when moving to a new city, so having a kind server who took the time to chat with us was great. Once we were seated, we started with the 2020 Artimino Poggilarca Super Tuscan. The price was reasonable relative to the quality of the wine. Orzo is an Italian restaurant, so why not go with a Super Tuscan, am I right? Next time I might splurge on the Super-Duper Tuscan—haha! Moving on to the food, we started with the halloumi and some bread. The halloumi was delicious, and we all particularly loved the sauce that accompanied it. Stephen mentioned they made it with ouzo, which I usually do not care for, but cooking it together with the other flavors in the sauce changed my mind! The bread, I believe, is freshly baked, and they serve it with great olive oil. Having family in Italy and close friends from Greece means I’ve enjoyed great olive oil—and this was really good olive oil. For our mains, two of us had the Risotto D’Estate, one had the braised lamb, and another had the grilled fish. I do want to preface that the fish and the lamb were from their rotating “Passport Menu,” which Stephen said changes every 4–6 weeks. Regardless, the quality of the dishes tells me that whatever they have on this changing part of the menu will be good no matter what. The fish was a light, delicate cod with the right amount of smokiness and earthiness. The vegetables that came with the dish were well seasoned and not too mushy either. The braised lamb was very tender, and the quality of the meat was clearly good. The accompanying sauce had great flavors. For the two of us who had the risotto, we were also very happy! This is the dish I had, and it was a lovely blend of flavors. The pistachios in it balanced out the salty/sour-ish (not the best word, but you’ll know what I mean) flavor from the cheese in the dish. It was outstanding. Finally, we capped off the meal with a tiramisu, the chocolate pot de crème, and some limoncello. The limoncello, I should add, is made in-house—and OH, that was a treat! I didn’t try the tiramisu, but was told the creaminess was perfect. Some tiramisus can be too watery and the ladyfingers dry, but that was not the case here. Similarly, my pot de crème was to die for! I am a chocoholic and have been baking/making sweet treats for nearly a decade now, so I know a good dessert when I try one. The only thing they could add to their menu is espresso! They have regular coffee, but an espresso is really what I enjoy after dinner. Overall, we had a fabulous meal, and I cannot recommend Orzo enough. For my first culinary endeavor in my new home of Charlottesville, I could not be happier. Please check out Orzo—and say hello to my new friend Stephen.

We were in town for a triathlon and need to carb up. We received more than we bargained for. Service was top notch. Steven made sure we were happy and take. Care of. The Moroccan menu is spectacular- don’t miss it. We lived in Italy and had homemade Limoncello, but there’s is even better. The Salmon was prepared perfectly and the pasta was al dente! Do not miss out on a great meal!

It's my first time in Charlottesville. We were looking for a good meal not far from our hotel. We just happened to walk by Orzo and the menu looked great. I had a paper plane cocktail to start. It was very good. The Fish Special was excellent! It was rockfish. Flavor was great and plenty of sauce unlike many other places. The flavors complimented each other perfectly. The hummus was also very good. Always love a good baguette! This place did not disappoint!

Today I had the chance to try this restaurant during Restaurant Week, and I was truly impressed by the delicious flavors and the warm, friendly service. Tavola is a stylish bistro located in the Belmont neighborhood of Charlottesville, VA. The restaurant offers classic Italian dishes and a selection of wines by the glass, 1/2 carafe, or bottle. Known for its exceptional rustic locavore Italian cuisine, Tavola celebrates local cheesemakers, breadmakers, and agricultural vendors to highlight their unique talents and quality offerings.
Went out randomly on a Tuesday night, and my wife and i were able to get a table on RESY, an hour later at the chefs bar, we got there early, and they got us a seat in the cocktail lounge until our seats were ready! I originally wanted something else, but I gravitated to the meatballs. After the recommendation, and i couldn't believe how amazing they were! The tiramisu was out of this world amazing !!!! The staff the entire time was amazing! Overall, it was an amazing experience! I advise anyone looking for great staff, great food, and amazing atmosphere to give this place a try !!!

Tavola was everything we hoped for and then some. Tucked into the charming Belmont neighborhood. From the first bite, you can taste the difference: every dish is made in-house, from scratch, and it shows. The pasta was perfectly tender, the sauces rich and layered, and the flavors felt like they were crafted with real care. Hands down, one of our top dining experiences in Charlottesville. Can’t wait to go back.

My husband and I had a Saturday 5pm reservation to celebrate our anniversary. I had read some revies beforehand so knew to expect to wait in a line in the alleyway before 5pm. However I was definitely a little shocked at how narrow and gross the alleyway was - if you're going to have your guests wait there, at least spruce it up and cap some of the condensation drains coming down from the roof! Also, logistically it made no sense to have everyone line up before 5 - any normal restaurant would be glad to have a bit of a stagger between 5pm reservation seatings. I was watching our poor waitress run around like a chicken with her head cut off to get drinks and apps to her 4 tables, which would have easily been avoided if they just sat us a few minutes apart (upon arrival). You can also tell it's just to incur some sort of feeling of exclusivity and not for logistics sake. That being said, the food was DELICIOUS. Highly suggest the fried artichokes. The autumnal orichette was delicious but my husband thought the carbonara was a little salty - probably a personal taste. Food was fairly priced, drinks were on the pricier side but definitely worth it for a date night or special night out. The inside of the restaurant was intimate, tables are spaced far enough away from each other that you don't have to hear your neighbors conversation, and the atmosphere was quite nice for an early Saturday meal - I imagine it gets moodier as the night goes on as well. Our server was very sweet and accommodating (I'm pregnant so she brought us two complimentary flutes of "champagne" except mine had ginger ale - very nice!) and we were in and out in about and hour and 45 minutes.

Our first visit to this authentic neighborhood Italian restaurant. Enter via side gangway. We tried to get reservations the day prior for a last minute birthday trip to C-Ville, but was told we could arrive and might be able to get seating at the bar with 15-20 minutes. We arrived on a Saturday night a little before 6pm and did not have to wait for bar seating. There are a few very tiny round tables in bar area a couple of which had 3 patrons ( I would not be able to eat with 2 others at that table, maybe they were only having appetizers?). Our bar seats were fine (chairs had backs) and servers were very friendly and made helpful recommendations. I had the carbonara which was the best I have ever tasted (I make my own and this was even better!)...house made sausage as well as the pancetta, just the right amount of pepper and cheese. Companion had the papperdelle which (I sampled) was very good too. Server said these two items are the most popular. Nice selection of wines and craft cocktails. We also indulged and ordered the hazelnut tart (sweet without being overly sweet and perfect flaky crust) and the pecial apple cider bread pudding which was outstanding! Would definitely recommend this restaurant, I now understand the reason reservations are usually booked up!

Omg. This place exceeded my expectations. The atmosphere was great and our waitress was amazing. Definitely get the FRIED ARTICHOKES THEY ARE SOO GOOD. For entrees we got the FraDiavlo, bolognese, and shrimp linguine (something like that). They were both sooo do. For dessert we got the tiramisu and it was really good. U need to come here

It's my first time eating here, and the food is fantastic! I had the beet salad with deep-fried mozzarella ball, then a shrimp and pasta dish finished with the Chocolate Lava cake. The servers were very friendly, we had a group of 5, and everything came out quickly and hot! Great for date nights and business dinners. 5/29: Food is still excellent! Clean plate club!
William B — Google review
An Italian restaurant with an intimate atmosphere, this was the perfect place for date night. The capesante ai ferri, which included sea scallops on a bed of beet-leek risotto, was unlike anything I’ve ever eaten. The texture and flavor of the risotto perfectly matched the scallops, and made a dish that is usually a little too fishy for me just right. The wahoo was cooked perfectly and the sauce, potatoes, and asparagus were a great compliment.

MarieBette Café and Bakery is a charming European-style eatery known for its exceptional pastries like brioche feuilletee and the original Prezzant, a pretzel-croissant hybrid. The café offers outdoor seating and serves breakfast, lunch fare, cakes, and on-the-go coffee. It's a popular spot for brunch with a light sit-down menu featuring baked eggs and sourdough breakfast sandwiches.
Everything from here is fantastic. I've visited many times. This time I tasted both my go-to everything bagel seasoned pastry pretzel and a seasonal king cake. The king cake had an almond that was so light and balanced and wasn't overly sweet. It was perfect. Highly recommend!

Perfect and delicious place for light breakfast & coffee- well, lattes. You can order a more robust & hearty breakfast, but we chose a variety of pastries - chocolate croissant, 2 other smaller ones (don’t recall names) and an apple tart. I wished that I would have taken photos of the beautiful decorated/stenciled in flour or powdered sugar breads & desserts- works of art! We got there just before the line had to moved outside, but it moved pretty quickly. We got our order to go, but we decided to sit down at a table that was available to enjoy it.

here are a few areas for outdoor seating and a small area inside for seating, as such, they were full and there was an hour wait for seating. We had time so we waited and it went much faster than expected. You order at the counter and get a number for your table. It is self-seating and no reservations. There's a separate nearby station which has silverware, condiments, and self-serve water. We ordered a London Fog, Latte, Almond Croissant, Parfait, Sharondale, and "Madame" (with an egg) Croquet Monsieur.

Great little coffee spot with French baked goods. Lots of croissants, sticky buns. I picked up a sourdough bread to take home. It was made fresh that day and was delicious with our Italian meal that night.

When I come to Charlottesville I always need to stop by MarieBette. Love this little café with its wonderful array of desserts. I must admit their cannelés are my weakness. Their quiches are delicious. I always leave with baguette, croissants, and a few other viennoiseries. Being French I can’t resist:) The atmosphere is great and the people working there are always helpful and kind. A must visit.

Perfect little specialty shop for coffee and baked treats. The caneles (pictured) are specifically what we stopped in to get while visiting Charlottesville. Also enjoyed a couple of iced coffees which complimented the pastries very nicely. The parking lot and pedestrian traffic stay pretty busy so be careful when pulling in or out of the lot.

The food was great for either quick stop or a sit down breakfast. Definitely recommend. Only complaint is that if it’s raining the said down space is limited.

Had high hopes for this place since it is supposed to be a high end coffee roaster. Only one person working, and he was in no hurry. Someone asked if he was all by himself, he replied that someone was in back but he as “fine. We purchased two drinks and two pounds of coffee. Asked for extra hot…and waited and waited. An attractive young woman came in and got her coffee immediately. Finally the saw us sitting there and said “what did you have” and pointed to a coffee on the counter that had been sitting there for 5 min (and never been told) and the second was almost ready. Flavor was good but both were lukewarm, as was our experience for $60

We were passing through Charlottesville before our tour of Monticello and were looking for a coffee shop with a historic slice of life and charming vibe. We stopped at the right place. Our barista was a coffee connoisseur who educated us on flavor profiles. We're not that picky, so we both had the caramel latte and got some banana bread. The only thing I would say is that it's a little pricey, around $30 for the two of us. However, it was good coffee and a great atmosphere in a great location. We loved the warm, cozy decor and the paintings of different places. It looks like a popular place because there were consistent customers, but it never felt crowded because of the openness of the room and people getting things to go. I recommend dining in because of the chill vibe. If we're ever passing through, we'll probably come back.

A few friends and I stopped by here to get some work done before an evening concert. This was a great place to post up, they have fast wifi, lots of seating, and easily accessible outlets. My girlfriend and I recently stayed near this coffee shop during our trip to Virginia. I would’ve given this coffee shop 10 stars, if I could! The coffee was consistently great everyday. A rarity, in my humble opinion. The service was even better! As someone who truly loves quality coffee and attention to detail, I cannot recommend this Mudhouse Specialty Coffee Roasters enough!

I’m in love and I may literally never leave, sitting cross cross on a wooden window seat with pillows. Sigh! The barista was kind and knowledgeable, handling a long line alone with ease and grace and not turning away our pour over request. My vanilla oatmilk latte was absolutely delicious. Top 2 in the state I’ve had so far… lip smacking delicious. The pour over was great as well! The vibe is chill…not pretentious at all. Clientele on a Friday morning was a nice mix of all very sweet people…holding doors for one another, kiddos, people working, etc. My only regret is that I don’t live closer to come more often!!

I think there's a lot of cool stuff happening here, but a Sunday afternoon is not the time to visit. The food selections were varied and plentiful, but every place had either no one standing out front when it was open, or only 2 people working. It felt slow and sleepy which are sometimes the vibe, but not what I'm looking to get out of a food hall. We ate at Maizal and the food was good, although dripping with oil.

Interesting food court. Clean and spacious, with several diverse and non-chain food choices. Lots of families with free-range small children running around. One little tot went to the ice cream pick up spot each time someone was waiting for ice cream. Made me wonder if the tactic ever worked for the child. We did not find the food "great" - but it was a nice rest stop. Restrooms are way in the back corner, but were clean.

Let me start off by saying the atmosphere is awesome! Now let’s get to some of the restaurants. We went to the Jamaican restaurant. The food was very unseasoned, but service was excellent. We also went to citizens Burger, where we placed an order and waited for it to be cooked, while waiting for our order, we saw the cook eating something while he was preparing our food. I have tried to contact the restaurant through email and their website to no avail. No one has responded. We also went to the pizza place where an employee was eating while preparing spinach for the pizzas right in front of everyone. I did contact that restaurant, who in fact responded immediately and asked if I had a picture in which case I did and I sent it to them, I never heard back from them after I sent the Picture. There is also a bar in this establishment where the person did not know how to make a long island and put almost half soda in the drink when it’s supposed to be a splash and was going to charge $16. There is no way someone would pay $16 for half a glass of alcohol and the rest soda I hope. You never know when a health inspector will come through and see the actions of the employees of these Restaurants. A week later, we tried to give citizen, burger, another try, and the bun was burnt. If you zoom in on the second picture, you will see it’s either a calzone or a slice of pizza that the employee was eating while prepping the spinach.

⏰Be sure to get a reservation to be seated ⏰ Great experience here ! Very welcoming. Soon as we entered we were greeted by the owner. Our servers were great ! The oysters were fresh 🤤. Mussels were one of my favorites. Mash potatoes were a little bland , but when mixed with the crab cakes they were good!

Awesome experience! Were greeted and sat at the bar after only a few minutes on a busy Friday evening. Oyster varieties were amazing and fish specials were cooked perfectly. Our waiter Eric went above and beyond to make our experience enjoyable and unique and the bartender was on point with almost no wait for drinks. Eric even helped us with an itinerary for the rest of the weekend with recommendations. Was refreshing to stop at such a classy place. MUST get a reservation here as it is a very small restaurant, otherwise you might find yourself waiting for a spot at the bar. This is probably our favorite restaurant here in cville, and even after many years, it is still consistently amazing! We ordered a dozen raw oysters of different brine levels, and they tasted so fresh. I especially loved the oysters from Breakwaters Newport, RI. My favorite main to order here is always the Moules Frites. Tried the Classic Mariniere, and it was SO DELICIOUS OMG. The sauce was decadent, that I had to make sure to soak up every mussel and the crostinis. And idk how they do it, but their frites are perfectly seasoned and crispy! The portions for this is pretty large, and shared some with my husband too, and is worth every penny. My husband tried the Rockfish with Chimichurri, with was also very good and fresh! Loved the crispy skin with the chimicurri sauce, gave a nice crunch! But I felt the portion size was a bit on the smaller end For dessert, LOVED the Apple Crumble, not too sweet, loved the contrast of the vanilla ice cream with the warmed apples, and loved the layer of oats on top, gives really good contrast in texture

Open Table said there was no availability...but we ventured there anyway and took a chance. Thrilled we did! We were greeted warmly and provided a seat at the 1st come/1st served bar. The attention and service were 1st class, warm, genuine, friendly and welcoming. The seafood was fresh and served immediately..ie 'hot foods hot and cold foods cold'. Delicious clam chowder. Highly recommend! They were the best part of our stay in Charlottesville, VA!

Very nice place! Small and quaint. Food, service and drinks were awesome. The lobster roll was delicious and the oysters were amazing. Great service, our server was very attentive and made excellent suggestions. Definitely will return.

Had a 5 hr Amtrak layover in Charlottesville I was dreading. This little gem made the stopover worth repeating! Super fresh seafood, oyster selection expertly shucked and curated, lobster rolls to die for, and as a Floridian I can safely say that the Key Lime Pie is off the chain. John behind the bar was the epitome of a gracious host and thanks very much to the gentleman at the door that helped me with my (heavy) bags!

Nestled just off Charlottesville's vibrant Downtown Mall, Fleurie Restaurant is a charming and intimate spot that promises an exquisite dining experience. This upscale eatery specializes in modern French cuisine, offering both à la carte and tasting menus that cater to diverse palates. The ambiance is elegant, making it an ideal choice for a romantic evening or special occasion.
It’s not often that we can justify splurging on a meal like this, but it was so worthwhile and special. The food, the service, the whole experience was amazing and we loved celebrating our first wedding anniversary here. My husband and I couldn’t recommend it more to celebrate your special occasion.

The food is excellant. I had the beets amd salmon salad appetizer, filet mignon entree with mushrooms, and a vanilla creme brulee for dessert. In between each course the restaurant serves surprise dishes for everyone to try. These are all samples sizes but very delicious and something you don't experience anywhere else. The staff did a great job answering questions and sharing where the food was sourced and how it is prepared. The atmosphere was nice and I didn't have to yell over loud music to speak with my dinner party. If you are visiting Charlottesville and want a fine French dining experience, with a quiet atmosphere, this is a must try. Great for business and date nights!

Romantic and well-polished restaurant with impeccable service and delicious food! Loved everything, from the bread, canapés, and cocktails to the scallops, salad, veal chop, desserts, and more. Lots of little "amuse"-ments come with the Prix Fixe menu, all around creative, unique, and flavorful dishes!

This was by far the most pleasant and technically impressive dining experience I have ever had. It is without a doubt worth much more than the fixed price they are charging. I ordered what I wanted, but they just kept bringing more and more complimentary bites of the most delicious food I have ever tasted. Everything from the Foies Gras, Veal, and Creme Brulee left me with a deep desire for more. If they hadn't kept me sated with small plates Inbetween courses, I would have gladly ordered everything a second time. Seriously, well done staff. Go to this restaurant. You will not regret it.

Very nice restaurant. The menu is mixing flavors in a wonderful way. In between dishes, you are served mise en bouche that are unusual and delicious. The dishes are also a pleasure for the eyes.

I cannot say nicer things about the staff at this restaurant. I had an unfortunate reaction to some new medication and had to leave suddenly before the main course. The staff was extremely understanding and quickly sent my boyfriend out with dessert and some chicken broth to help settle my stomach. They went above and beyond and expressed genuine concern. Everything I did have the chance to try was really good and the wine was delicious

Transported to France in the heart of Virginia! This restaurant in Charlottesville offers a genuine taste of France with its exceptional cuisine and charming ambiance. The foie gras, duck breast, and apple tart were nothing short of spectacular—each dish exuded authentic French flavors and finesse. The service was impeccable, elevating the entire dining experience, while the romantic and cozy atmosphere added an extra layer of charm. A must-visit spot that I highly recommend making reservations for—an unforgettable culinary journey awaits!

Sultan Kebab is a charming Turkish restaurant that offers a wide range of authentic dishes in a relaxed, art-adorned setting. The menu features an array of kebabs, vegetarian options, salads, homemade baklava, and traditional Turkish teas and coffees. Diners can savor succulent lamb kebabs, Iskender kebabs, shawarma, lamb kofte, hummus and kisir served on intricately designed traditional crockery.
We really like this place! All of the food tastes fresh and has great flavor. We came right before the dinner rush and were seated immediately, but the whole place was full by the time we got our food. It’s popular for a good reason! We shared the double meat platter with chicken and meatballs, it was delish!

We ordered chicken kebab platter and lamb kebab platter for pickup. The restaurant was so pretty and super clean. The food tasted amazing but we were disappointed with the quantity of the meat given. The platter was full of rice but only one skewer of meat was given. It tasted amazing and authentic, was full of flavor as well, but for ~$20 a plate you would expect a lager quantity. I also would have liked some sauce with it but overall the food tasted good!

Wow... that Bulgar Wheat Pilaf is transcendental. The chicken is intensely savory and delicious. Kunefe? First time for me with that dish... I had no Idea Mozzarella could be dessert. Turkish coffee in a perfect little cup. Top Notch. Best Turkish Food I have ever had. Even the little side Turkish salad was tantalizing. Good Job guys.

Vivace is a charming bar and eatery housed in a historic farmhouse that has been serving refined Italian cuisine since 1995. Situated near the University of Virginia, this restaurant offers a diverse atmosphere with cozy intimate spaces upstairs and a vast multi-tiered outdoor terrace. The former main quarters of an old farm, Vivace's hilltop location and terraces create an ambiance reminiscent of a quaint Italian village.
Wonderful, relaxed 2 hour pre Anniversary dinner. Kit he being slow was no issue. We DINED ! Warm crusty Italian Bread and house salad were tasty and filled the time till the delicious and beautifully presented VEAL Picatta arrived. We enjoyed and recommend.

This place is soooo cute. I wish I took more pics of the outdoor vibe but I was enjoying myself too much. The food here is absolutely made from old school recipes. So much flavor in everything. I loved how the bread was warm, flaky crust and a soft flavorful doughy inside. Our server was very helpful but they seemed to only have two or so waiters covering quite a large table spread. Worth the wait tho!
Carly P — Google review
Vivace is hands-down one of my go-to spots in Charlottesville. It hits that sweet spot between upscale and welcoming, making it perfect for both a romantic date night or a more refined dinner with friends or family. The food? Consistently excellent. The fra diavolo is a standout—spicy, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. And don’t even think about skipping dessert—the tiramisu is rich, creamy, and just boozy enough to feel authentic. The Caesar salad deserves a special shoutout. Add the white anchovies—seriously. It takes it from good to unforgettable. Their antipasti board is another must: a generous spread with quality meats, cheeses, and marinated veggies that feels rustic and indulgent at the same time. The building itself adds to the charm. It’s got that warm, classic Italian vibe with a touch of old-world rustic flair. You feel like you’re in a timeless space the moment you step in. Vivace nails the essentials: ambiance, flavor, service. Always a solid choice in the Cville rotation.

The food was wonderful as always! Unfortunately, they did not staff the patio tonight as needed. Our server was quite nice, but so in the weeds. An hour to get out appetizer and two hours to get our entrees, and had to return a second bottle of wine which hadn't appeared by the time we finished dinner. We've been here many times and loved it. Tonight was unfortunate.

Vivacious never disappoints! Had the Polpetini for an appetizer. I highly recommend them for the entire table to split. They use the freshest ingredients. Server was wonderful. I could cut the chicken parm with a fork . So very tender.

We were looking for a true Italian restaurant. We were only able to get a 430pm reservation but the place was empty, we were the only ones in there even when we left at 6pm it was empty, so why couldn't we come later? The food was fantastic. The service was really slow, our waiter was no where in site when we needed him, we asked for bread and he brings it without plates really? Am I supposed to pour the oil on the table? Everything was good except for the service.
Laurie L — Google review
If you like Italian, go here! Fresh ingredients, amazing atmosphere that welcomes one and all. They really take pride in what comes out on the plate. My pictures done do it justice, so go try for yourself. The food, the food, the food is so damn good! I got the filet, which came on a bed of risotto and some asparagus. I don't even like risotto and I almost ordered seconds. It was so good, and creamy, and seasoned to perfection. The asparagus was cooked perfectly, with just a little "snap" when bitten. My wife had their house special pasta. Which has a Marsala style sauce that was very good. It was a little sweet, but it paired well with the sun-dried tomatoes and our wine. Highly suggest you try this place. Some were dressed up, but def not required.

Lovely atmosphere indoors and outdoors - a nicely shaded patio in particular. Great date spot. The food arrives quickly and portions are sizable. Some dishes were wonderfully satisfying and others fell a bit short; we do not recommend the marsala.

Neapolitan restaurant
Lampo Neapolitan Pizzeria is a popular spot in Charlottesville, known for its high-quality, updated Neapolitan-style pizza and snacks. The rustic-chic decor adds to the charm of this cozy restaurant. With a wood-burning oven that produces authentic Italian flavors, the pizzas are a must-try. Despite its small size, the restaurant offers outdoor seating during warmer months and is rumored to be expanding due to its popularity.
The pizza and service were both excellent. The space is a bit small, so it may not be the best choice if you prefer a more open or spread-out setting.
Virginia D — Google review
I want to love this place like everyone else, but I just didn’t. I thought the pizza tasted really good, but it took a long time for it to come out and the crust was a little too burnt. The toppings slid off one of our pizzas really easily as well, which was too bad. We came early on a weekday when it was snowing so we were seated right away, but I don’t think the experience would be worth waiting for a table.
Emme T — Google review
Lampo continues to knock it out of the park with bold flavors and perfectly balanced dishes that make you rethink what casual Italian should taste like. The Caesar salad with white anchovy was a standout right from the start—unexpectedly bright and punchy without any overpowering fishiness. The anchovy added a salty, umami depth that worked in perfect harmony with the tangy Caesar dressing. The porchetta sandwich? Unreal. Rich, herbaceous, and deeply satisfying, especially when you drizzle on their house hot sauce. It’s the kind of sandwich you crave again the moment you finish it. Their Margherita pizza came out hot, fresh, and steamy—the dough chewy and blistered in all the right places, the tomato and cheese combo comforting and classic. Simple, but absolutely worth every bite. But the sleeper hit of the night was the Pauline Gee pizza. This one had attitude. The spicy salami and sweet honey made for an addictive sweet-spicy combo, and the oiliness gave it that indulgent edge without going overboard. Spunky, rich, and wildly satisfying. Lampo isn’t just a pizza spot—it’s a whole flavor experience.
Ahri A — Google review
I want to start off positively by saying the food and drink were very good and exactly what I wanted and expected. My friend and I shared a delicious tomato sandwich on house-made bread. It was really delicious and had the right amount of sauce on it. We each got a tomato vodka martini which was very soft in flavor, but pleasant to drink. Now onto the negative aspect of the review. I think the service staff could use some additional training on table-side behaviors. Our waitress didn't talk to us about the menu at all (it was pretty tiny for the Tomato Tomato festival next door), which I thought added a coldness to our experience despite her mild mannered demeanor. It was busy, but having a 15 to 30 second chat with a table shouldn't be too much to ask. When we got our sandwich it only came with one plate despite me telling the server we were sharing the one sandwich... Okay, that could be chalked up to someone other than the server bringing us the food. But the runner didn't notice either that there was one plate for two people? One of the guys in the kitchen walked a side plate over and handed it to my friend who was eating over a napkin (which I had to ask for) at this point. I feel conflicted. The service absolutely needs work, but everyone was very nice who I spoke to. Their biggest issue is not paying attention to what's going on around them, or predicting what the guest will need - two things that were emphasized to me when I was a server at multiple establishments.
Kaitlin J — Google review
We were lucky to make it to the first cohort to enter the restaurant when it was opened at 5 pm. We arrived 10 min before 5 and the line was in already. The farro salad was creative and delicious. The pizza crust was soft and thin. Both the margarita and fungi pizza were amazing and just right. I heard that they have a take out joint, I might try if I need to.

Attended a graduation party in the back room - the food, drinks and service were fabulous. Would go back especially because of the service.

Great place to eat and enjoy drinks. We finally made it here to enjoy the hype, a recommendation that was well worth it. Everything that we ate was tasty and fresh, perfectly done. Staff was courteous and on point, delivering nothing but stellar service. Warning, there can be a wait since this place is known for its quality (but it's well worth it). On the day that we visited we probably waited 15-20 minutes to get a table, which didn't seem long to me. Once seated the food and drinks rolled out not soon after ordering. Restaurant is pretty clean, cozy and compact on the inside with additional seating on the outside. Definitely worth multiple visits and check out their wood fired oven!! Thanks for a great experience Lampo!!
Kevin W — Google review
I wanted to like this place better. The pizza itself - the Margherita was good - but the service! They clearly forgot about us, serving at least two other tables that were seated after us. Only when we asked if they could cancel the order they remembered us. Turns out, they did it to another table and when that gentlemen asked to see the manager outside, he was told it was only 30 minutes wait. Dude, we have watches, too. If you make a mistake, own it. Stuff happens. Won’t be back. Also insulted by the mandatory 18% gratuity they put on our table for 2. They e clearly bought into their own hype.

Three Notch'd Craft Kitchen & Brewery in Charlottesville is a popular spot for happy hour, offering different specials throughout the week. From Kick the Keg on Wednesdays to First Tap Thursday and Happy Hour on Fridays, there's something for everyone. The brewery was founded by three friends who wanted to share great beer and good times with their community. They are dedicated to giving back and celebrating individualism while paying homage to the historical figures of the region.
Great place on a stop to UVA hospital, especially w/kids. The service was quick and the food was great. Pirces were good too. Kids meals were only $5 (mon-friday) and included a scoop of ice cream! You can't hardly get fast food for that these days. I got one of the specialty burgers, and it was juicy and and flavorful. The mango beer was also very good. There's a park adjacent for kiddos as well. Would 10/10 recommend and come back!

We were walking around this area checking out the local shops and stumbled upon this place. When we went inside, we were greeted by a large staff that seemed happy to see us. They did inform us that since they have a kitchen though, we'd have to go outside on the covered bar patio with our dog. They took us out there and let us pick where we'd like to sit. There was one other couple out there with a dog when we arrived, but throughout our time there it filled up fairly quickly with lots of other dogs. This place seems like a regular haunt for a lot of the locals! My husband tried a flight of different IPA's and I got one of their house made canned cocktails. He really liked all of the beers he tried and I quite enjoyed the Vodka Mule, followed by the Lemon Drop. They don't have any GF beers, but it was nice to see they had a wide variety of other options. Our server, Addy, was also fantastic! She was exceptionally knowledgeable and friendly and on the ball. If she wasn't sure about something being gluten free or vegan, she went back to ask the kitchen to clarify. I greatly appreciated that... and her love of dogs didn't hurt either.

Been here a couple times and have enjoyed both experiences. This past time me and my wife came for dinner and got the pretzel bites, the Nashville chicken sandwich, and the honey badger burger. The pretzel bites were pretty good, a little different than we were used to but not bad. The fries were very good and they gave a lot of them. The sandwiches we agreed were both good but not mind-blowing. The inside area has plenty of seating and we really like the vibes. The happy hour deal was $2 off beer/wine and appetizers and we took advantage of that. Would recommend getting a beer or a meal here if you’re in town

The server was amazing we were there for a work event and had a very large group. She got all our orders right! The food was not great. But the atmosphere was fun. The steak bites were covered in excessive amounts of chili powder and had no salt. The fries were good. The cheesecake texture was not good.

$15.50 for a cheesesteak that has no cheese and barely any onions! Went back to ask for a remake but their kitchen switched over so they could only offer free cheese. Not sure how the “chefs” could forget cheese and onions on a cheesesteak. My gf ordered the tofu burger, and again, nothing like the pic, and also barely any ingredients like the picture!

For the reputation and price, I was expecting a lot more. I ordered the tofu banh mi sandwich, and parm fries as a side. The tofu was nicely battered and crispy, and the sauces were good. i found myself really missing all the vegetables on my sandwich. The jalapenos and cilantro were nice, but it needed more. I don't think I had any 'pickled vegetables' as described on the menu. It was pretty greasy, and the fries were soggy with oil. Our waitress was very kind and helpful, and we did visit on a busy night, so maybe the kitchen was overworked.

Went here on a recent visit to the Charlottesville area. Atmosphere was good. Beer was good. Appetizers were good. But I ordered a BBQ pulled pork sandwich for my "main course." It tasted as if someone had spilled salt on it. I had a couple companions taste it to see if I was crazy, but they agreed with me -- way too salty. It was inedible. Everybody else liked their food, though -- so I guess I was an outlier.

I was visiting Charlottesville for my first time with two friends familiar with the area(one UVA grad, the other a long term resident of Charlottesville). Our long term resident friend highly recommended we eat at Himalayan Fusion. As it was a quiet, sunny Thursday afternoon, we elected to sit outside (though the interior of the restaurant was incredibly cozy from the brief time I spent inside). The owner and chef both came to take our order-the chef did not speak much English, but that does not matter, he speaks in flavors with phenomenal cooking. They were willing to accommodate various tolerances to spicy food, and when asked if they could prepare goat or lamb (which were not listed on the menu), they did, in fact, have the ingredients necessary for both (we decided on lamb). We ordered a chicken curry, a lamb curry, veggie momo, chicken momo, aromatic rice (perfectly spiced with cardamom pods and lengths of cinnamon), and roti-all well portioned to share between the three of us, and each very reasonably priced. The dishes the food was served in were beautiful, too. Stainless steel inside, but hammered copper outside. Does that make the food taste better? No, but it absolutely demonstrates thought went into every decision. Partway through the meal, the owner asked if we would like to try their chili chicken, to which we obliged. Y’all, everything listed before was a 10/10, but the chili chicken is an 11+/10. Hot enough to tingle the lips, but not so hot it’s uncomfortable, and oh so flavorful, beyond just the spice. I’m regretful I did not take any pictures, but I will absolutely be coming back to do this restaurant the full justice it deserves (and for the kheer!). Truly a phenomenal experience all around.

We ordered To-Go for Chawmein, vegie pakora and chicken chilli while I was in town. I was extremely disappointed to see the quality, size and amount of pakora, 6 tiny size over-fried (burnt/charred) pakoras for $9, see picture below. The chowmein tasted nothing like authentic chowmien and no one in my family liked it. The chicken chilli was the only acceptable item, but still wasn't great. Would not recommend.

We had our rehearsal dinner & wedding welcome party for our guests at Kardinal Hall and it was amazing! We had the rehearsal dinner in the private back room and then rented out the patio for our welcome party. Everything was beautiful and delicious and we received rave reviews from our guests. The Kardinal Hall staff was awesome to work with and made everything super easy for us. Chrissy was a superstar from start to finish - she was super helpful in the planning stages and was there for every part of the event making sure everything was perfect for us. Would recommend for anyone looking to host an event!

We hosted our wedding welcome event at Kardinal Hall and could not have been happier with the experience. We worked closely with Chrissy, who helped us plan everything in advance. She was responsive, thoughtful, and really listened to what we wanted. She helped us with layout, timing, food selections, how to use the patio space, and even made sure the mic setup for speeches went smoothly. It honestly felt like she was thinking two steps ahead for us the entire time. Lily was both our bartender and also someone we coordinated with in advance, and she was amazing. Such great energy, friendly with all of our guests, and incredibly efficient at the bar. Multiple people commented on how great she was. The food and drinks were fantastic. We did a variety of appetizers and mains, and our guests raved about everything. The staff made sure trays were consistently replenished and there was more than enough food, which we really appreciated. They also handled dietary preferences that we shared ahead of time and clearly labeled everything, so guests with restrictions felt comfortable and included. We had a partial outdoor patio buyout, and the space was perfect for our group of around 70. Kardinal Hall also allowed us to bring in our own personal touches, which helped the event feel really special and personal to us. Overall, the staff, the food, the service, and the atmosphere all came together to make the night exactly what we hoped it would be. Hosting our welcome event at Kardinal Hall was one of the best decisions we made for our wedding weekend. Highly recommend.

This place can get packed on game days. Food was fine. The pretzel is good, but kinda small for the price. The veggie burger was pretty good and came with lots of fries. Roasted Fennel with miso yogurt had very nice presentation, but the price was not worth the amount of food you get. Overall, it’s okay. Would rather visit during happy hour or some time when it is not crazy. They have an outdoor seating area that is covered and protected from the elements, but it was still cold under there. Service was fast though, so it didn’t make waiting in the cold too bad. Also, they have veggie options and lots of beverages to choose from.

We attended a special event here and were so impressed with the quality of the food (sliders, Brussels sprouts, fruit/veggie/charcuterie trays were all perfection!), the professionalism of the staff, and the awesome range of the drinks menu. Update a year later. Had and it was not acceptable. It's got much thinner, smaller, and smothered with gravy sauce and Belgium fries were sort of, seriously? Was so disappointed... We enjoyed it when we visited a few times a year ago. Oh well. C'ville! Sunday has a different and limited menu. I also went on a weekday and it was a better/more option available on the menu. I liked both times. Very free, casual, relaxed atmosphere for sure. You order, pay, and receive a number for the table and when food is ready they bring it to your table. However, when it's busy it gets very loud. If the weather is decent outdoor seating is a great addition.

Beautiful venue down right gorgeous, but no lunch on sundays until 3 is just not what I wanted. My major gripe is they have a ton of TV’s where our group was hoping to watch a couple different NFL games. They don’t had a few games on and then had some kind of error message come up and had a single game on. Maybe that’s my fault but I expected the bar covered in TV’s to be able to put on the games.

Southern restaurant (US)
Restaurant
Nestled within The Draftsman, an Autograph Collection boutique hotel, The Ridley stands out as Charlottesville's go-to spot for upscale-casual dining and fresh seafood. This restaurant not only offers a delightful culinary experience but also honors Dr. Walter N. Ridley, the first Black graduate of the University of Virginia and a pioneer in education at historically white public universities in the South. A portion of its profits supports the Ridley Foundation, which aids Black students at UVA.
The Ridley offers a mix of strengths and little areas for improvement, but overall, it’s a spot worth visiting, especially for its warm atmosphere and accommodating service. As someone who isn’t a Southern food expert but is quickly becoming a fan, I found this experience enjoyable and eye-opening. The Skillet Cornbread is a standout dish—rich, flavorful, and perfectly baked. The ribeye is cooked to the requested doneness and absolutely delicious, while the lava cake is rich, decadent, and the perfect end to the meal. The Chef’s Seasonal Crème Brûlée is fantastic, with a satisfyingly crunchy crust and a delightful surprise at the bottom. The Oyster Rockefeller is also a highlight, tasting delightfully different from others I’ve tried, with a unique flavor profile that sets it apart. Some dishes could use a bit more refinement. The Fried Wings in Phoenix Rub lack flavor, and while the chicken isn’t notably fresh, it thankfully doesn’t have an off taste. I’m looking forward to trying the maple BBQ rub next time for comparison. The gumbo is decent but not extraordinary, and the blackened salmon is unfortunately dry, which diminishes its potential. But then again, as someone who is not familiar with Southern dishes, they don’t taste bad—they just lack the texture to make them truly memorable. The service is impeccable. The staff is attentive and accommodating, with Lucas standing out for his professionalism and attentiveness. Their hospitality added to the enjoyment of our meal. The Ridley shines in its standout items and excellent service. It’s a place we’ll happily recommend to friends and family visiting the area. Looking forward to our next visit!

Food was good but nothing to rave over. Crab cake was fresh. But the plate was a bit cluttered with sauteed vegetables. No sauce for the crab cake. My friend enjoyed the shrimp and grits. Staff was attentive and nice

We ate both dinner and breakfast here. Two excellent meals! And the service was great! One server, Gail, was a UVA student, engaging and attentive and smart. The supervisor, Twanda, checked on us as we were eating breakfast. We got into a discussion about grits, and upon learning my wife's view of them, RAN into the kitchen to bring her a small bowl of the Ridley's. She has now become a grits fan. My omelet, big enough to feed two, was just cooked to perfection. One item to change . . . the bar's signature Old Fashioned is made with Jim Beam . . . I told the bartender they needed to up their game, and she completely agreed . . . I had Knob Creek in mine. In any case, don't miss a visit here!

My husband and I were scoping out new brunch places and the Ridley is by far the best weve been to in charlottesville. Honor was our server and he was very attentive and sweet. The food and cocktails are some of the best I have ever had. Definitely recommend coming here if you’re ever in the area. Its worth it!

The Ridley is an understated and cozy place to come to if you're looking for some truly delicious dishes in a laid back lounge atmosphere. The old fashioned is fantastically balanced if you like a slightly sweeter old fashioned, the sweet potato mash has an incredible nutmeg/cinnamon flavor that is just fantastic, and the bourbon street pasta is to die for- expect eye rolling mmmmmmmmms. Truly, one of the best meals we have had in a long time. Also Katherin is a wonderful server, she is attentive, personable, and timely. Thanks Katherin for making our time at The Ridley even better!

Celebrated our 23rd anniversary at the Ridley. Everything was amazing, waiter, Edward was a young man and amazing! He was very patient with us as we figured out our order. Only downside was the greens were spicy (please remove the spicy element.. because the flavor was great!) and our friends didn’t like the deviled eggs. My salmon pasta was simply divine!!!! My husband’s lamb shank was tender and very good. My friend’s husband had the chicken and waffles and he loved it. Great place to eat and we will be back!!!! Atmosphere was elegant and perfect for our anniversary dinner. Great service, meal and ambience!!! Thank you!! ❤️❤️❤️ )

Not worth the money. Fried green tomatoes were undercooked and under-seasoned, cold on the inside with wet batter and hard exterior. Not worth $17. Pasta had brittle texture and the sauce was really loose. Flavor was good, but the dish was worth maybe $15-18. not the $29 we paid. It goes for $23 total with just chicken or sausage, but we got both and paid extra. Not even close to worth it. Deviled eggs were really good, but basic. Just egg yolk and mayo for filling with a sprinkle of chives and candied bacon on top. Very good flavor, but it was $10 for two eggs (four halves). On the plus side, servers were great and atmosphere was really nice. Fancy with jazz music and open bay door with cool breeze coming in; however, I would not return due to food quality and high price.

Bodo's Bagels is a local favorite in Charlottesville, offering New York-style bagels and a variety of customizable breakfast and sandwich options. Founded by Brian Fox in 1988, this establishment has become an essential part of the city's dining scene. With three locations, Bodo's serves over 6,000 people a day with its freshly baked bagels that don't even need toasting. The menu includes 10 different bagel options and an array of toppings to create personalized orders.
If you’re in Charlottesville, you have to stop at Bodo’s Bagels! We tried the egg salad with bacon on an onion bagel and the chicken (turkey) salad with cheese on a garlic bagel—both were delicious. The bagel flavors were spectacular and really brought everything together. The salads themselves aren’t heavily seasoned, which I actually prefer—it lets you adjust the flavor exactly to your liking. Just a heads-up: during rush hour, the space can get pretty cramped with people waiting, but the staff keeps things moving fast and efficiently. Local, tasty, and always worth the stop—Bodo’s lives up to the hype!
Stacey S — Google review
The bagels are moist, freshly made , and delicious. They have a variety of schmears and bagels. You can order any protein to make a sanwich. I happen to order their pastrami with egg and cheese. Absolutely worth every cent. They allow you to customize any sandwich with different condiments, cheeses, or spreads. Their are 3 different locations. All of them are in Charlottsville. You will not regret stopping by.

I recently visited the Bodo’s on Preston and ordered a bagel to go. When I got home, I was horrified to find a huge clump of hair baked right into my food. It was absolutely revolting. For a restaurant with such a great reputation, this shows shockingly low standards of cleanliness and food safety. I even left a voicemail for management, but never received a response. I hope management takes this as a wake-up call to fix their health practices immediately.

Staple of C-ville, Bodo's has the best bagels around. Love the jalapeno lime cream cheese on everything or onion bagel. Pro tip, if you're taking out and weather is nice, take your food over to the Rotunda near by at UVA for a great place to sit and have a bite.

While visiting Charlottesville, we kept hearing that Bodo’s Bagels was a must-try spot—and it absolutely lived up to the hype. When we arrived, the line was already forming out the door, but the staff worked incredibly quickly and efficiently. We waited roughly five minutes in line and another five minutes for our food, which was impressive given how busy it was. The bagels were fresh, delicious, and definitely worth the stop. There was also plenty of seating available, which made the experience comfortable despite the crowd. Bodo’s Bagels did not disappoint and is well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

We are trying breakfast at this restaurant for the first time, and my husband and I really liked it. I chose a sesame bagel, and it was delicious.
Sarra O — Google review
Bodo’s Bagels is an excellent spot for anyone who loves fresh, high-quality bagels. The bagels are delicious on their own or made into hearty sandwiches, with a wide variety of fresh-made cream cheese spreads that are equally impressive. Service is consistently fast and efficient, even during busy hours, and the restaurant is always clean and well-kept. Overall, Bodo’s Bagels delivers great food, friendly service, and a comfortable environment—definitely worth a visit.

Bizou is a charming restaurant located in Charlottesville, offering a mix of traditional and updated Southern dishes. The establishment, which has been around for 20 years, prides itself on sourcing local ingredients that change with the seasons. The menu features classic favorites like meatloaf and pot pie alongside elegant Sunday brunch options such as eggs Florentine, hanger steak, salmon, and pomegranate mimosas.
Had a great brunch at Bizou. We went during the children's spring break. As such, it wasn't as crowded as we feared as most of the college students were likely on break as well. We were seated without delay. The Double Down Burger and Spicy Chicken Burger were both tasty, juicy, and full of flavor. The rest of the table were satisfied with their dishes as well though i am not certain what they were called. Service was excellent! Our server was very friendly and attentive. The venue itself has a charming old historic feel that adds to the experience.

We had the Biriaa Biscuit and Fried Chicken Sandwich, both of which tasted amazing. The chicken thigh was cooked beautifully and the slaw was perfect. We had a side of fries that were cooked perfectly. Their cocktails are worth the price, amazingly made. The service was kind and quick. We ate within 30 minutes of sitting down.

Servers were all very polite and hospitable. The atmosphere was mellow with dim lighting. BUT THE FOOD THO. THE FOOD WAS STUPENDOUS. The short rib croquettes, the duck ravioli, the scallop seasonal special, the creme brulee! The short rib croquettes and their crunchy exterior when you bite into it, the creamy and soft short ribs interior dipped into the rich and creamy hint of mustard SAuce. Exquisite. The duck ravioli was full of flavor, perfectly cooked al dente ravioli, so good. Touched my tralala. The scallop had a very nice grilled flavor, there was so much different flavor in one dish. Like the autumn leaves. The pumpkin slices, to the carrots, to whatever was in there. I don't even know where they get their olive oil. That was such a smooth and fruity flavor. The creme brulee was a nice finisher. I would love to go back.

A Cville treasure! Great menu with local ingredients executed perfectly. Sit outside if the weather permits or grab a cozy booth inside. We had the roasted beet salad with seared salmon for lunch.

Food is fantastic. Wine list is complete. Only comment is to take a day with the staff on the wines & proper serving temps. Beautiful bottle of 2022 Chablis came out slightly under room temp. Had to ice it down to bring it to its glory. Was genuinely great otherwise. Just take the time to educate the super star staff on the wine.

Splendid French style dishes. • autumn squash tart absolutely exquisite. Fall in a bite, roasted cinnamony squash, buttery crisp and rich tart, pumpkin seed texture pop, & matchless goat cheese yogurt sauce with hint of sweetness and basil garnish. • tuna tartare with minty green sauce and sweet sour soy glaze, fresh tuna, & crispy wonton fried strips for dipping and crunch texture. • confit duck ravioli with generous richly flavorful sauce, garlic pesto, basil, goat cheese yogurt drizzle. Succulent duck in al dente ravioli pasta. Restaurant floorplan a bit narrow feeling, service can be a bit rushed and desultory by some of the staff but attentive and great by others. Superb food.

Food quality was variable. Burrata salad was pretty good, vegan tamale not so good, garlic bread not so good, crab cakes were ok, and short ribs were good. Server was a bit awkward but ultimately provided decent service. Sit outside--kitchen fumes a bit strong inside.

The Whiskey Jar is a beloved spot in Charlottesville, known for its comforting Southern cuisine and laid-back atmosphere. The menu offers hearty dishes like crispy fried catfish and tender BBQ brisket, complemented by an extensive selection of local beers, whiskeys, and house-made cocktails. This casual eatery is part of Ten Course Hospitality and is a go-to for those seeking classic Southern fare such as buttermilk biscuits, poboys, and fried chicken.
The restaurant is so cute and the food is amazing! I absolutely love the cornbread and have to get it every time. I’m also a huge fan of the blackened catfish. This past time I got the oyster poboy with the broccoli salad and both of those were so good.

The bourbon selection is pretty fantastic at the whiskey jar and the staff were great. We stopped in on the way through town and had a few local brews and had some dinner. On a recommendation from the server, I got the BLT and it was unquestionably the best one I’ve ever had. The kids had grilled cheese and they were also raving about it. We had to wait about 25 minutes to get a seat outside, but that’s probably because we showed up around 6pm on a Friday night. I’ll definitely stop here the next time I’m in Charlottesville.

I went with a friend for lunch. The decor was authentic and made the place charming. I took the rack ribs with french fries and salad. The meat was really tender with a barbecue sauce. Absolutely loved it.

I can highly recommend the Whiskey Jar Julep is made of very fresh ingredients at the bar. The meat is not a poor quality cut but actual good quality and the sides are all good. Staff remembers faces despite the busy atmosphere. Drinks and food can be found cheaper but not for the exceptional quality of the well made food and drink.

Good experience with attentive staff and decent food - nothing to write home about. The Wilson sandwich was tasty and the house salad was good (w/ shrimp). The drink were a bit strong for my taste.

We went here for the live music. Special shout out to Matthew O'Donnell for the invigorating energy and amazing music. Spent hours in the place just for the music. Its mind blowing how many instruments he played! Its ljke a magician who gets out a different instrument every two minutes. Unexpectedly, the food was also quite nice. The vegetarian burger might feel slightly dry, but less so than most other american burgers. The hummus and veggies were great and healthy. Although, I wonder from the huge size of the veggies whether they are gmo. The hummus tho has a brilliant taste! Moreover, one of the most lively place in the downtown. Love it!

I was looking for an authentic southern restaurant to take my friend to. This place did not disappoint. very solid a pulled pork. Barbecue nachos was loaded and tasty. The brussels sprout was so good. Everything was seasoned well and not overwhelming. We also try their signature cocktail with whiskey and really like it a cute little place in downtown to recommend.

I reviewed this place 7 months ago and it hasn't changed after giving it another try recently. This is the second visit in 7 days, and neither of them was mind-blowing. I had not planned on reviewing this spot since it is a local favorite. After the experience tonight I wanted to put my two cents in. To begin, the drinks are great, as is the environment. There was a local group playing some music tonight, which I have heard before, and they are entertaining. No issues there. It was nice to see the folks dancing and having a good time. The drink selection is great too. I am writing this based on several visits and not a single visit. The not-so-great. These last two times I have received glassware that was chipped and broken. Not a huge deal to some and I've been in food service before. I know first hand how this can become a big deal to some folks. I was honestly perturbed by the fact that it happened twice in a row. Sounds dumb, but I was not inspecting my glassware thoroughly when it was brought in; I did not notice that it was broken until I was already drinking from the glass. The first time I brought it up, the young man was very apologetic. This second time, the waiter (a different person) was sort of nonchalant and uncaring. The food is mediocre and salty. I had a burger the first time that was made incorrectly. I notified the young man, who was apologetic but never came back with the condiments I requested. He didn't come back for a good 40 minutes, to be honest and I had decided to just eat my burger and go home by that time. This time I had the fried chicken. I won't make that mistake again hahaha. There was a breast and two other pieces which were unrecognizable because they were burnt and dried up. The breast was moist inside but the breading, potatoes, and gravy were all extremely salty. I enjoyed my drink so I will just stay away from the food next time. Overall, my impression is that the location and live music is what makes the place great. definitely not the food nor the service. I want to say it was a one-off, but through the 3 or 4 past experiences, the service was never more than "ok".

Soul food restaurant
Mel's Cafe is a casual local spot in Charlottesville, Virginia that serves up delicious Southern comfort food such as BBQ and fried chicken. It's an old-school, soul-food diner with a friendly vibe and reasonable prices. The cafe is known for its fried donut and fried chicken, which are highly recommended by patrons. The staff at Mel's impress with their sublime service - kind, quick-witted, and genuinely grateful.
A Gem in Charlottesville: Mel's After attending a show at the Paramount, the host raved about Mel's, highlighting its delicious food and reasonable prices, and the sold-out audience wholeheartedly agreed. This sparked a realization for me: despite hearing countless praises about Mel's over my decade in Charlottesville, I had never dined there. Today, I finally remedied that. From the moment I stepped in, the counter staff impressed me with their sublime service—kind, quick-witted, and genuinely grateful. We ordered two classics: the BBQ sandwich and the Philly steak with cheese, accompanied by sides of mac and cheese and stuffing with gravy. These dishes were pure comfort on plates, enjoyed in the charming outdoor setting on West Main. If, like me, you've delayed visiting this quiet, unassuming, and quaint-looking establishment, make time to experience the superlative food and service at Mel's. Highly recommended and strongly encouraged. Don't miss out!

My husband got the hamburger melt and fries My chicken dinner was the star of the show! This might be the best fried chicken I've ever had! The mac and cheese was excellent! The fried potatoes with onions and cornbread were like from my mom. The ambiance is like a little eight table diner and very homey with lots of pictures. The service was excellent. You go to the window to place your order and they bring it to your table. After you eat you pay as you're leaving. I will definitely be going back on my visits to see my cousin in North Carolina. And the prices cannot be beat. The menu is current from January 2, 2024. I wouldn't mind trying other things on their menu at all, but all I want is their chicken from now on so I'll have to talk my husband into getting something else so I can taste from his plate too. That chicken was so crispy and delicious and juicy inside. Just excellent!

Wonderful old-school cafe a short distance from UVA Hospital. I have walked past a few times recently and wanted some of the finest comfort food in town. Service with a smile. I got a Philly steak with onions and added peppers and mushrooms. Perfect size and the taste and bread were good. Also ordered some mac & cheese and coleslaw. Both were good but the slaw was better. I want to get the chicken next time for sure and eat there. Cost per person is very reasonable with dinners available for approximately $11.

A little treasure. It's probably been there forever. The staff was very kind and patient. The fried chicken was delicious and the sides cabbage, cornbread, Mac n cheese (dry n sticky vs. wetness gooey) was sooo delicious. The pork chops with gravy was a winner too as well as sweet potato pie and lemon pound cake!! Would love to try everything!@

While touring Monticello, we worked up an appetite for lunch. Hit the Google, and found Mel's was open and had great reviews, so we head to downtown. The reviews were spot on. The fried chicken was juicy and flavorful, and had a nice, crispy crust. The Mac and cheese was very good. The stewed tomato's were oddly sweet, so not a favorite. The small burger was cooked perfectly and the added bacon was nice and crispy. The homemade pulled pork had a nice flavor, not too much sauce, and topped with crispy slaw, a nice touch. Both were served on toasted buns. The fries were fresh, cooked just right, and seasoned to perfection. This place is a hole in the wall, but the food is prepared with love!

Mel's was just the place we were looking for, local owner, great food and great atmosphere.

Everyone was very friendly, food came fast and had the perfect portion. If you like home cooked southern dining, this is your place. The fried chicken was perfection. We also got the Mac & cheese, green beans, country ham, hamburger steak, coleslaw, stewed tomatoes. There was not a single complaint. It was like eatting at your southern country raised grandmothers house for Sunday dinner. We are already planning our next trip back.

We also try their Apple cider bread, which tasted surprisingly light and good. I really really enjoy their Mojito. The desserts were fabulous. We got the Mexican chocolate bread, pudding, and the carrot cake. Both were wonderful.

A really amazing place at the downtown mall! Great Latin/spanish inspired cuisine. I was recently in Barcelona and all the dishes with manchego really took me back to eating there! My halibut was cooked perfectly with crispy skin! This was a daily special so I’m not sure how often it’s on the menu but I would recommend it if it is! My husband got the duck breast and for me it was a bit too sweet for a whole meal but he seemed to enjoy it. The savory bread pudding however was very very good! We had spent the day at the wineries so we didn’t get any drinks but both their cocktail and wine menu looked great, will definitely account for that next time!

Came here when it was rather empty and dinner just started. I had the spicy tuna to start and it was a lovely presentation. They were able to make it gluten and dairy free. I also had the duck with Swiss chard and side of my choice. I decided on spinach. It’s great that they ask about celiac and are aware of contamination. That’s a huge plus for accessibility. The duck was so good! I would have never thought cranberries on duck would pair together. If you’re in town and looking for an elevated place to go to, look no further.

I ate here with a group of 12. The staff were not very accommodating about splitting the check, though they did put a 20% on the bills. Food was decent. They mixed up at least 1 drink order getting an IPA and a Vienna Lager to the wrong people. I had scallops which were good. I would not recommend this place for large groups.

We ate at Zocolo after a Sunday afternoon show. No wait when we strolled in. The food was exceptional, we were very impressed. My wife had the duck with spinach and onion bread pudding. Excellent food! It took 6+ years of living in Charlottesville before I ate at the Bluegrass Grill for the first time and the hour-long wait time get in on a Sunday morning was worth it!! I’ll go back on a weekday next time so I don’t have to wait that long which was partially attributed to being a party of 5. A few parties of 2 and 4 got tables before us so beware if you have 5 people in your group. I had the spanakopita omelet with spinach, feta, and mozzarella which was fantastic. Others in our group had pancakes, the P4 and eggs Benedict. Super vegetarian friendly.

The place has a unique and cozy atmosphere despite being packed. There is only one restroom in the place. The home fries are delicious and the Banana Foster Pancakes were fantastic. Coffee was alright, although the eclectic collection of cups they used was a nice touch to the dining experience. BRING CASH!!!

Always great food here! I usually try to come on a weekday to avoid the long wait, but even if there is a wait it’s worth it! I usually get their savory options (corned beef hash, omelets and portobello mushroom hash are awesome!) but tried their bananas foster pancakes this time and I’m glad I did! They might be my new go-to! Love their bacon and their home fries as well! Bluegrass Grill and Bakery is a must-try!

Salmon Florentine Eggs Benedict was delicious with the chorizo side. But oversalted home fries and I don't recommend the grits. Very casual, homey vibe with Bluegrass music in the background. Pay via cash or check only though. Bummer 😒

Best breakfast I've had in a long time. The Hungry Norman Benedict was stupid delicious. Coffee was good, service was friendly and prompt. You will have to wait a bit for a table but 100% worth it.

Love this place! The wait was insane on homecoming weekends (oops) but so worth it. Got the burrito with black bean chili, eggs, fresh roasted veggies, mango salsa and topped with cucumber sour cream. Potatoes were 10/10. Awesome environment. Kind folks. Highly recommend.

Restaurant
The Alley Light is a bistro-style restaurant in Charlottesville, Virginia that specializes in French small plates, boards and shareable dishes. The restaurant has a handsome bar for cocktails and wine, and also offers three- or four-course dinners.
We were in town for just a night and this place was recommended to us and we had a little trouble finding it but a quick phone call to the restaurant got us there. It was actually part of the fun. The food and service and cocktails here were absolutely wonderful. We were super hungry and ordered a bunch of small plates and the best for us were the scallops, the tenderloin, the goat cheese/endive salad and the chocolate giant macaron dessert. They make their own Limoncello in house which was delicious, and my Barbie cocktail was perfectly crafted.
Sooky M — Google review
Main dishes of beef tartar and chorizo broth mussels were excellent, but the sides were great as well. Brocollini was very flavorful and the carrots, yes the carrots were the star of the show. Please don't let this detour you, as I want to reiterate the main dishes were excellent. Cocktails were top notch. Between my wife and I we tried 5 different cocktails and all were fantastic.

Excellent spot for an intimate, fine dining experience in Charlottesville. They offer an impressive and extensive wine list, creative cocktails, and a diverse menu with shareable plates that is constantly changing with exciting new dishes. Entire staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and gave great recommendations. Perfect for any occasion ranging from a quiet date night to a classy night out with friends. Highly recommend this hidden gem of Cville!

Everything is GREAT!!! Must go. Love the beef tartare, seafood platter, all the seasonal risottos, and could keep going.

This is without a doubt the best restaurant in western Virginia! Almost a hidden gem, off an alley on downtown Charlotte’s 2nd Street and up a lovely staircase … the restaurant seems to take patrons back in time with a lovely dark wood interior and bar. Our meal was incredible, from delightful drinks (all bar mixers are housemade) to a seafood charcuterie board to delicious desserts. Highly recommend letting wait staff recommend menu items … Anna was instrumental in helping us choose our menu from a variety of large and small plates. Highly recommend!
Sydney N — Google review
Food was delicious, only reason 4/5 is due to the odd pacing of the meal and food coming out super quickly. We order 4-5 apps/shared and the filet main which we were told takes up to 40 min. However the filet ended up coming to the table before half of the starters had been sent out so it was just an odd pacing for the meal. Dessert was delicious, lovely wine list. Would visit again but we will just ask for a slower pacing next time we dine.

Bummer. We had such high hopes for this restaurant experience...the menu reads wonderfully. However, the experience did not live up to the expectations. We came here for dinner on a Wednesday night. They were moderately busy. We were seated right away. Drinks are very good. The bartender actually made me a lovely drink and altered its taste to my likings. My husband enjoyed his drink, as well. Then the bottom fell out. The waiter started out nice, explaining dishes. He never once said that the restaurant was a French Tapas type so regardless of how we ordered, food would come out as prepared. We actually ordered our food, stating that we would like the sweetbreads (listed under "snacks") and risotto as starters and the scallops and tenderloin as entrees. He never corrected us. He informed us that the large entree would take 45 minutes (the tenderloin), and we were fine with this. Thirty minutes later, I got my risotto. It was tasty with a small amount of mushrooms. Twenty five minutes later I got my scallops...large serving and also tasty. We asked about the sweetbreads and were told "they take a while." Now, we were seated at 8pm. At 9:35pm, my husband got his tenderloin. He had specifically ordered medium rare. It was medium at best and one piece was the end piece of the tenderloin (overdone) and the other was a much thinner piece, cut unevenly. We waited about 5-10 min for the waiter to come and he never did. My husband started cutting pieces from the smaller piece because he was starving. (I was long done.) He finally went to the kitchen area and asked to see the waiter. When he finally came to the table, my husband explained that the meat was overcooked and the pieces subpar for the price paid. He had eaten 2/3 of one of the two pieces. (Still no sweetbreads.) The waiter said that he could either keep the meat as served or be charged 1/2 price and he'd take it away since he had eater 2/3 of one of the two pieces. He also said, at going on 2 hrs, the sweetbreads were almost done. My husband said to cancel the sweetbreads and take the steak away. After he took the steak away, my husband and I were discussing what might have happened (he forgot to put in the sweetbreads for order), and the girl pouring water felt the need to eavesdrop on our conversation and interrupted us, stating that he didn't, that they take a long time. (OVER TWO HOURS?) Rude. Poorly planned. Overpriced. Maybe understaffed --since we rarely saw the server after he took our order. We would definitely not recommend this restaurant unless you have more than 2 hours to eat your snacks, don't mind service staff eavesdropping and interrupting your private conversations, like to pay high prices for food not meeting your order and expectations, and appreciate a restaurant using the "tapas excuse" to bring out food whenever they feel like it.

With an impressive selection of hundreds of beers on offer, this spot is perfect for those looking to explore unique brews while enjoying delicious American fare like bison burgers.
Personally, I want to give a warm and well deserved Thank You to all who work here! It was absolutely incredible overall, I had the Chinese sticky pork belly, and I was such a piggy who definitely wanted more. However, portion alone was quite decent. Will, our server is absolutely spot-on, which is rare to find from some places. Absolutely will come again even though I live over an hour away.

I was blown away by the quality of food here! We came here at the suggestion of a tour guide in town and I couldn't be happier for it. The special of the day, Tomato Pie, was amazing! It's a rarity you find it on a menu at all but then have the taste to back it up is a treat. I don't drink beer so I can't speak to it but with the amount of choices offered here, everyone should be able to find something that they love. I would happily go back and try many more dishes here.

Have been here a few times and have really enjoyed my experience each time. The last time I came for brunch with some friends. They were a little crowded for the number of servers they had but it wasn’t terrible. I got the breakfast burrito and it was a lot of food and I was happy with it. The potato’s that came with it were pretty good as well. Prices were reasonable and they have a huge beer selection, both domestic and imports, so be sure to check those out as well

We arrived on a Thursday afternoon in July around 12:30 PM. It was not very busy. There is inside and outside seating. We chose to sit inside at the bar. We were immediately greeted by a bartender, and she gave us menus. We talked about the beers on tap and tried a few before deciding on the Freestone Walker Union Jack IPA. I had the local burger (which is smashed now) and frites (potato wedges not fries as I found out later). My spouse had the Turkey Trot. The burger was cooked too long so the edges were very dry. The frites were very thick wedges so they were not crispy like fries. The Turkey Trot had good flavor but the bread was so thick it overwhelmed the sandwich. The service was very good as was the beer but we were not impressed with our food selections.

Stopped in for lunch and was immediately impressed by the menu. Great variety. Soup specials of the day were white bean chili and squash, ginger bisque. Both were amazing. Great depth of flavor. Enjoyed a turkey club and another special, turkey meatball sub. Both were ample in size and tasty. Finished it off with a brownie made with rye which was excellent. No beer but the selection was solid. Our server was attentive and helpful. Outdoor space was perfect for enjoying the weather. Price point was very good. Definitely a place I'd return to.

Beer run always knocks it out of the park. The beer selection is always well stocked with all the craft beer you could ever imagine. I’ve been for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and am always blown away by how good their food is and how interesting they keep their menu. I live the rotating menu and always have an opportunity to try something new each time I go. Def recommend their nachos and shrimp/grits. Show this place as much love as possible!
Gino F — Google review
Some bartenders are great. Not all. Been going to beer run 10 years. Not often. I like the selection and generally the service. Last couple of times on a Friday at 4, the bartender was rude and short. Made me feel unwelcome and a bother. Same dude. Geez. Asked for a couple samples before deciding and got a couple drops of each. Didn’t help me decide. But I have made some decisions. Terribly start to a weekend. Love you beer run but some folks will keep me and others away.
David G — Google review
The nachos were awesome we got ours with the meat. My husband had the chicken pot pie which the filling was very flavorful but the crust left a little left to be desired so he didn’t the shell of it. And I had the shrimp and grits flavor also very delicious my only small complaint was that it was tail-on shrimp, mixed into this beautiful dish that you had to cut off and plop off to the side, I personally like to get everything out of the tail which then meant getting my fingers full of grits.

Bang! is a charming restaurant in Charlottesville, VA that offers a cozy atmosphere with stylish decor and a backlit bar. The menu features Asian-inspired tapas and inventive martinis, catering to various dietary preferences including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. The concept of sharing plates encourages interaction, making it an ideal spot for a date night.
Went for restaurant week in a group of 4 so we had 12 dishes. It was so much food. Favs were tuna crispy rice, chili garlic chicken noodles, tempura sweet potatoes, Korean beef spring rolls and duck ravioli. Update: Was there last weekend for a date night and it was amazing! I usually sit outside but we sat inside this time and the vibe was good. We ordered way too much food for two people 5 plates and 2 buns, we were stuffed and had a little food to take home. The service was good, sometimes it can be hard to get more drinks or water but we didn’t have that problem this time. Our favs this time were the tofu bun, firecracker shrimp and tuna crispy rice.
Zoe G — Google review
The service was great for sure. The food was complicated. The cauliflower was too greasy and oily… kinda ironic as a vegetarian tapas. The firecracker shrimp was pretty good, so was the Thai chicken spring rolls. We also tried the Duck noodles. It’s kinda interesting to use oyster sauce and duck at the same dish, but not bad, I really liked the noodle texture.

Absolutely loved our evening! The steamed buns were perfectly soft and flavorful, and the tapas were creative, well-seasoned, and beautifully presented. Every dish was a treat, and the cozy, vibrant atmosphere added to the experience. Service was attentive and friendly too. A must-visit if you're in Charlottesville and love trying a variety of bold flavors!

We had a fantastic Sunday dinner at Bang! The food and drinks were excellent. We ordered from the vegetarian menu and tried the Mushroom and Sesame Tofu Buns (mushroom was the standout), General Tso Cauliflower, Goat Cheese Dumplings, and Tempura Sweet Potatoes with Feta—all were delicious. Mango Mule and Bourbon Ginger Honey cocktails were strong and tasty. For dessert, the key lime cheesecake had a nice subtle lime flavor and it was pretty good Our server, Cameron, was helpful and provided great service. We sat outdoors and place had nice decor. Highly recommend!

great place for tapas!! every dish was yummy, and so were the drinks. i would definitely try the baos here (fried chicken bao was surprisingly good), the dumplings, and the noodle dishes.

We had an amazing experience at Bang! They had so many vegetarian options, actually a dedicated menu section for it, which we particularly enjoyed! Shout out to Cameron, who took great care of us and was forthcoming with suggestions. We tried Mushroom and Sesame Tofu Buns, General Tso Cauliflower, Goat Cheese Dumplings, Tempura sweet potatoes. All the food was amazing!! The cocktails were unbelievably good and really strong! They do not skimp!!! We tried the Not your Mother’s Mule and Bourbon Ginger Honey. Both were top! Key Lime Cheesecake was delicious too for dessert. Would highly recommend..

I love bang. I tell everyone it's one of my favorite restaurants. I'm leaving a bad review, because I'm here and the dining room is full and one girl is working the floor by herself. I also own a restaurant and I understand that payroll is difficult but it's pretty frustrating to not be able to get waited on (I had to go and find her after being ignored for about 15 minutes), not be able to get a check (come find her when I'd ask for the check 10 minutes ago) when I ask for a check. I'm here for the Film fest, and they can know months in advance when the film fest is going to be and have appropriate staff. I understand that they can pay them $2.19 or whatever and have them work the floor and put all the money into the kitchen staff, but it's pretty frustrating from a customer's perspective. I am leaving a bad review even though I love the restaurant because I want the owners to see this. I want to come to bang! every time I come to Charlottesville because it's cool. I like the vibe. But eventually . . . I won't come.

Ace Biscuit & Barbecue is a humble yet noteworthy BBQ spot that offers breakfast platters, sandwiches, and local beer along with their from-scratch sauces. The restaurant is known for its succulent fried chicken with a crisp buttermilk crust, featured in the popular dish called the Dirty Biscuit. This laid-back eatery provides generous portions of traditional Southern comfort food, including buttermilk biscuits stacked with smoked meats, classic pulled pork, and fall-off-the-bone ribs.
Great breakfast or lunch spot! Chicken and waffles and an ACE biscuit hit the spot. Super friendly staff. Checks all the boxes. Recommended by me and worth another visit in the near future.

I hate to say it because I was expecting more but it was gross. I had the old dirty; There was absolutely zero flavor. The chicken was dry, the breading was overwhelmingly thick and falling off, and all I could taste was pepper. Absolutely zero seasoning. The fries weren't cooked all the way and were barely seasoned, I couldn't eat them and gave them to my husband. He ordered the Cuban. He said it was ordinary, nothing to right home about. He ordered extra meat and if that was extra, there must be no meat on the sandwich because it was skinny. Overall it was extremely expensive being as we paid 40$ for a chicken thigh and the smallest pork sandwich of anyone's life. I would not recommend stopping for food.

We're in town for our son's baseball tournament so we took our food to go, but it was a cool atmosphere inside and we would have enjoyed dining in. From the second we walked through the door the staff was welcoming and friendly. They have homemade sauces and took time to talk to me about them. We ordered breakfast: biscuits and gravy and a sausage breakfast burrito. Both dishes were so good. The burrito has potatoes in it and they were delicious, and so was the sausage! The portions were very generous. I'm looking forward to going back next time we're in town!

I heard/read nothing but good reviews about this spot and was really excited to try it. I went there on a Saturday night around 6:15-6:30, knowing what their hours were. Their open sign was turned on and visible from the outdoors. We went inside and the staff members had prematurely started closing down for the night. They all seemed visibly shocked/irritated about us being there, all because they started to close down early and had mentally checked out for the night. We ordered our food and sat down and then either the owner or manager came up to us and patronized us about how the restaurant closes at 7. This all happened with at least 20 minutes to burn until 7pm. Didn’t even thank us for coming by or properly greet us, just told us they closed at 7 and walked out the door to leave for the night. If he wasn’t gonna stick around, then why did it even matter? This made us feel unwelcome and like we were being forced out. The bbq itself was quite good and I wanna try more of their menu options, but feel reluctant about going back after this experience. A customer should never feel guilty or rushed out just because they show up less than an hour before the restaurant closes. Disappointing that this is my first impression of a spot that I was genuinely excited to try.
Gino F — Google review
We are so glad we chose Ace Biscuit & Barbecue to cater our wedding reception for us. We received many compliments on the food and enjoyed it very much ourselves! Ace provided a beautiful pig roast, a variety of their standard meats and sides (the mac and cheese was especially delicious and very popular!), and--upon request--a vegetarian option in the form of truly scrumptious smoked tofu. The Ace staff were fantastic to work with--Lauren, our main contact, was very communicative and worked with us over many weeks to create a package that we were happy with--and the fellows working the smoker were very good with the kids at our reception, who were of course fascinated by the pig roast! And the fact that Ace pulled off catering our very large event (400+ guests) within weeks of the devastating vandalism to their location, including their kitchen--and over a month before they officially reopened--speaks very strongly in their favor. We would heartily recommend Ace for anyone looking for catering services in the area, or just anywhere to stop by for a good meal!

Ordered the pulled chicken sandwich, but it was very disappointing. The chicken was oddly pink, mushy, and tasted like canned meat. The sandwich wasn’t assembled, the bread was not toasted and completely soggy from the juices. Definitely not what I expected from something labeled as a “sando.”

Ten is a modern Japanese restaurant that specializes in sushi, sashimi, and sake. They serve dishes in a sleek and contemporary setting with locally sourced ingredients. Their small plates are expensive and perfect for sharing with parents, who are essential when dining at Ten.
Had a date night here on Saturday 1/4 and it was our first time trying Ten. Our server, Wyatt, was fantastic. He was personable, kind, and very patient in explaining all of the different menu items, which was especially helpful since I'm a little new to trying sushi. The atmosphere was classy yet comfortable with illuminating decor. The sushi was absolutely amazing with such high quality and great flavor.

// Re-posting this 4/16/25 because the post became corrupted after adding new photos // Our recent dinner at Ten was about as perfect as could be. Jack (ask for him) gave us a brief overview of Ten’s history as well as explained the menu with a sense of pride that you don’t often see. The sushi was on a different level than I’ve ever had. It was exquisite in every sense of the word. My wife and I were blown away with each bite. A tip for couples - the chirashi was a great dish to share with two pieces of fish each. Without question we’ll be back. Ten certainly left its mark on us.

The large windows facing the downtown mall are fabulous. Sushi is good and fresh, wouldn’t say it’s great though. Some of the sauces were overpowering. Good drink menu, and they actually have Blanton’s bourbon on the menu by the glass @ $27. Only real critique is that the service is spotty. And from the sushi bar you can see into the kitchen. Clearly the staff was very hungry because they were all in there eating while cooking or between services. The worst part were the continuous presence of small flying bugs. They were everywhere, and it requires constant swatting to keep them off food and out of your drinks.
K C — Google review
The vibes were great inside the restaurant. Very tastefully decorated and the lighting is very fun. We went at a busy time so it was pretty loud. Ordered an appetizer that never ended up coming. We chose 4 sushi rolls: the Stella Blue Crab was our favorite, though a passing waiter noticed it wasn’t finished yet so he whisked it away to get completely made before returning it to us. The other rolls were fine.

Took my brand new fiance here, it was really nice to try quality Japanese cuisine and the waiter was super nice and helpful even though we didn't know much about the food. Not someplace I'd come frequently due to the price but definitely worth it for the special occasion. I'd recommend the Sparkling Ten, assorted sushi, and anything the waiter recommends.

please let me explain, the food was outstanding. The service was great. When we seated, we were told there was a load delay for the sushi rolls, but we’re not served till an hour later much too long of a wait to eat. But the manager came by multiple times and apologized and offered us company dishes in the meantime. He invited us back and apologized many times and said this is not the way they do business, so I really appreciate the sincerity and honesty of the manager, and we will definitely give them another opportunity.

You would never expect anything unassuming place like this to be so great. We got there at 10:55 AM and there were already people waiting, which is a great sign. I checked my watch and about 30 minutes after we got seated, the entire place was full. The food was excellent. If I could I would have 4.5 stars for the food because, although delicious, the portions were a tiny bit small. The service was excellent. Even though it was as busy as it was, the waitress was very friendly towards us and even gave us recommendations of things to see around Charlottesville! Prices are very reasonable as well. Would definitely eat here again.

Riverside is one of the best family diners I have had the pleasure eating at. The staff is patient and passionate about their diner. I went one time a few years ago and it too this day is my favorite place to eat dinner out or quick grab while coming home from work. I highly recommend the carrot cake it’s hard to find a good one that is moist, sweet, and they use natural ingredients.

Went on a Saturday afternoon and it was full but not crazy busy. The prices are very reasonable. I got all fried food for my meal and my partner got a burger. The burger was good but I really think the fried foods are the highlights. The cheese balls were so good. They’re pepper jack cheese cubes battered and fried. Also had fried mushrooms which I loved.

Food was good. Tables were clean. Service was rapid. Limited parking, no itemized receipt, staff had to look up the price on the menu and seemed to guess what the charge. 1 double bacon cheese burger with lettuce , 1 Philly cheesesteak, 1 basket of fries, 1 Soda, and 1 tap water cup, $37.

The selection at this bakery is always fantastic. I have been here numerous times, and have never been disappointed with my selections. The prices are very reasonable - so much so that buying bread is cheaper than buying mass produced bread from the grocery store, and you get a much tastier and healthier bread. Also, the service staff are always very friendly, and very patient with my decision paralysis when faced with such a wide selection of treats.

After living in Charlottesville for well over a decade, I can't believe I never left a review. This is by far the best bakery in the US that I have been to, and up there in the world. As graduate students, we had small orders, but they always left our order aside for use to come in later to pick up. Their desserts are to die for, and their baguettes and batons are better than some I've had in Paris. Their sour dough is hands down the best in town. They also seem active in the community. When I was in a local run marathon training group (shout out to ragged mountain), the owner was there. If you are traveling through town or a local, check them out if you haven't.

This is definitely our favorite bakery in Charlottesville ... maybe even Virginia. As a lifelong carb lover, I am obsessed with the bread here. I rarely have a sweet tooth, but I'm constantly craving all the sweet treats from this place! I think it's because nothing is sickly sweet and the ingredients are superior quality. I swear, I feel like I can practically taste the love. I think we're making a weekly stop to stock-up on goodies a new part of our routine.

Thanks so much to Albemarle Baking Co for making us a delicious cake for our wedding day! It was a carrot cake because our birthdays are in October and we grew up eating it whenever we were celebrating. We DID NOT freeze it for our 1 year anniversary because we know we can just stop by for this delicious cake anytime! Thanks again!

The black bean nachos were incredible. I haven’t had nachos this good in probably 10 years. I got the Carnitas which was crispy sweet and spicy deliciousness. The House Margarita was delicious. Perfectly sweet.

Stopped by on a Tuesday night around 6.30 and the place was packed. Came back the following day around 5 or so and got a seat at the bar. Within 45 minutes the place was full. The tropical brisket was on the menu and it was really good. The brisket was seasoned well and was tender. The whole plate was seasoned well and very good. If you try their dangerous sauce, it is quite hot. Great service behind the bar too.

I'm not sure why folks like this food. Not much flavor and relatively expensive. Service was great, laid back vibe. We were told great food and were very disappointed.

I used to eat here when I lived in Charlottesville nearly a decade ago, and I was pleased to find out that it was just as good as it used to be. The Santa Fe enchilada was exceptional…and, being a native New Mexican, I’m pretty picky! Yes, it’s busy and noisy, but that is part of the charm. Don’t let the line scare you. You can enjoy a marg while you wait and chances are you’ll run into a friend — or make a new one — before you get to your table.

Worth the wait you will inevitably have...best margaritas in town (also available while waiting)!! Don't leave without getting the Red Hot Blues (nachos). The Divide always had a solid menu of staples and daily quesadilla. The Santa Fe enchiladas and the brisket tacos are always delicious.

OH MY! This place is a go-to for Mexican food! We are from St Louis and these margaritas are the best! Reminds me of silver coin margarita from Santa Fe New Mexico! Not yucky sweet... Just super delish! By the way ... the food is great too!

There was a live musician, and an artistic decor, The bar set up nicely and neatly. The menu is well put together with traditional Mexican dishes. We ordered two main courses. The food was great. But what stood out was the smoked, naked chicken wings. I am going back for more of the wings tonight.

This location has moved but still at the mall. Love the vibe and decor when you enter. You can make reservations but even if online states that you cant make one, call the restaurant to verify. I showed up to see if they had tables available, and there many available, no reservation needed. The Camarones Quesa Tacos were very moist and outright the best shrimp tacos I have. They do not skimp on the meat either like other places. Suadero tacos had some spice, mild to normal people and fire to sensitive taste buds. Food is full of flavor. Just the right amount alcohol in the margaritas. Limonada is straight from the squeeze. Would definitely go back. Yucca fries are delicious and the right amount of softness but you'll definitely need some sauce with them because if you plan on eating the entire side by yourself, they get a little thick.
KJ S — Google review
Had a reservation so there was no wait. Guacamole and salsa is fantastic. Yucca fries were okay. The suadero, shrimp and steak tacos were all really good. The place is pretty lively and I would not recommend for a quiet dining. There was a group at the bar that was pretty loud and for second I thought I was at Buffalo Wild Wings.

Sat at the bar and had the Kiss me through the foam drink, which was tasty and satisfying, a grande margarita, ceviche, empanadas, enchiladas suizuas. Food was better than I remembered—quality was high, flavor combinations on standard dishes were inventive and honestly, I was licking my plate. Presentation was very appealing. Well done kitchen! Had been there a few other times but this was most memorable.

We tried all six of the tacos on happy hour. They were all excellent, though I was partial to the vegetarian ones. The watermelon jalapeño margarita was the perfect blend of sweet and spicy. Nice outdoor atmosphere. Excited to return and try more!

This restaurant is the BEST! The food is absolutely perfect, so flavorful and tasty. The Brazos Burrito is sooooo good. We had the Tres Leches cake for dessert which was also probably our favorite dessert we have ever gotten at a restaurant —ever!! The service is great as well! So friendly and welcoming. The patio is very nicely decorated and kept very clean/tidy. There’s absolutely nothing I could suggest to improve, they have it all figured out already! I wish I lived in this area, I would come back all the time. Next time I’m in Charlottesville I WILL be coming back!

I ordered 2 Texas twinkies, 1 pollo rostizado 1 carnitas And 1 adult beverage, the Calbron. Unfortunately food was luke warm when it came out, and generally uneventful/ subpar would be a bit mean... the carnitas was undercooked and concerning... no bueno. *See photo, after the attempt to down it. Some pozies tho: 1)Though basic in flavor, the Cabron hits a quite strong if all you've had all day is popcorn, some chips and a veggie burger. 2. The ambiance is pretty neat indoor and outdoor. Outside of the architecture and vibes, at least when I went, lots of kids and parents *Taco Tuesday. 3. if you're just looking to have your belly filled, food and adult drinks can be placed to go. Spent $25.00 for meal, not including tip.

Oakhart Social is a modern restaurant known for its relaxed atmosphere and creative small plates that put a fresh spin on comfort food. The menu boasts standout dishes like perfectly seasoned crispy Brussels sprouts with tangy aioli and robust roasted cauliflower. Pair these with their craft cocktails, such as the sophisticated Oakhart Old Fashioned.
We were on a weekend trip to visit Monticello, and stopped here for dinner. To give you a heads up, I am easily impressed with food. If it doesn't make me sick, I think it's great. So no points for me liking my food. In fact, I deducted a point for service because they didnt have Yuengling, but the waitress told me some weird beer I never heard of was just like it. It wasn't. Now my wife is VERY difficult to impress. Her father owned a fish market, and we live on the Atlantic, so fish is often on the menu. Beyond that, she has also told me that flounder is a gross bottom feeder. So I was floored when she ordered the flounder. She said she liked what she read on the menu. Once she was served and took the first bite, her eyes lit up and she didn't speak for about 2 minutes because she just kept taking bites. Then the praise just kept coming. She said it was the best "meal" she has ever had. Not just fish, the best meal. It has been a few days, and she has talked about that flounder to everyone that will listen. She did let me have a bite, and I got so mad that I didn't order it. She would not let me have another. Since it was her birthday, I let it slide, and did not hound her about it. The kids and I ordered the brick oven pizzas, one of each kind. The kids range from 7-10. So the older ones can throw down when it comes to pizza, but I was shocked they almost finished 3 pizzas. They did not want to stop. All three pizzas were amazing!! So the wife says we are going to go back. I don't have the heart yet to tell her I'm not driving six hours for dinner. So a couple things beyond the amazing food. The staff was very friendly even by Southern standards. They were kind and attentive, and our waitress really made my wife smile which made her birthday so much more enjoyable. She was awesome. Except for my beer. I'm not forgiving that. The restaurants location was a bit busy. So if you get anxiety about parallel parking, don't worry. They have a parking lot. Our total meal for five plus tip was about $175. For the quality of food and service, I'm not going to complain. For anyone living in the Northeast, that is an amazing deal! Maybe I will drive back.

We finally tried Oakhart Social after hearing about it for years. We dined at the bar, it was a bit loud and service was not very attentive. As for the pros, we enjoyed the salad and broccoli. We ordered the “seared salmon” and were alarmed when it came out more than half raw and uncooked (as in the photo). Checked with the bartender who seemed to suggest that was normal and that the partial sear “cooks through” the salmon, however, nowhere on the menu was it noted that the salmon was left half raw and uncooked. I would not have ordered it had I known and the bartender didn’t offer anything to accommodate. It was gross to eat. The mushroom with polenta is also heavily smoked and came with a heavy cream sauce that wasn’t for us.
Caylea — Google review
We had no reservation, but we still went to see if they had any open seating around 5:30pm, and we got seated right away in their heated outdoor patio! The restaurant gives very cozy, rustic vibes - very warm. Service was great, the waiters were super attentive, and the food was absolutely delicious! They serve family-style, and they recommended ordering 3-4 items for 2 people. Hanger Steak - If there's one thing you must order, THIS IS IT! Paired with the chimichurri and aioli sauce, it was **chef's kiss** Grilled Oysters - Oysters were well-balanced with garlic and cheese and tasted super fresh, no surprise being right next door to public fish and oyster (hehe) Roasted Mushrooms & Polenta - This was the surprise of the night, where the oyster mushrooms had a citrus/tangy taste, and the polenta almost tasted like baked mac & cheese, but WAY better, especially paired with the chili creamy sauce! And don't get me started with the dessert & cocktails! The s'mores bread pudding was a unique take on s'mores and it was not too sweet approved! And all the cocktails we tried were good!

This is our go to spot when we are here visiting! We love everything about Oakhart! The food, drinks, service, and vibe are all spot on. The dishes are delicious and creative. The bartenders and chef are some of the nicest folks around. We always feel at home when we come for a visit! Thanks y’all!

One of my favorite places to have dinner in Charlottesville. The food never disappoints and never does the service. I can’t recommend this place more. I’m a huge fan.
Ava D — Google review
Oakhart social is creative, comfortable, and casual. Take advantage of the small plate format - everything we had was as tasty as it was well-presented. A couple can finish 3-4 plates. The tuna crudo is an absolute must - wonderfully flavorful and complex. The fried chicken was definitely a departure from your standard fried chicken, with Thai spices and a fish sauce vinaigrette on the side. The indoor dining is at full capacity again, and the outdoor dining is well shaded. And great service!

Wow, the food was absolutely amazing. Great option for vegetarians! The barbeque tofu has so much flavor and the roots rice was amazing. This is a very healthy food option and the portion was really big. I got the southern and I would highly recommend. The sauce was also a nice touch, not too strong like some dressings, but a perfect light flavor addition to the bowl. 10/10

Devin M — Google review
I’m in Charlottesville for a wedding and a group of us stopped at Roots for salads for lunch. We walked to our hotel and began eating when, not 15 minutes in, I bite down on something hard. It was a broken piece of metal. I then sifted through the salad and found a SECOND identical piece of metal. I walked back to the restaurant and alerted the manager and staff. They looked at me puzzled but were not in any way apologetic. I said I don’t want to make a scene but this just happened. They said “we don’t even have utensils like that.” Well news flash, you do and one is broken because the pieces were in my salad. I’m not a litigious person but I went to law school, therefore I am very familiar with lawsuits of this nature. The manager gave me a refund for mine and my Aunt’s salads, but the lack of care is what bothered me the most especially since the staff began making the next meal for the next customer without doing a thorough inspection of their utensils or ingredients. Accidents happen but they can also result in severe injury. I’m lucky I was not severely harmed by this incident but this restaurant must do better.

Charming decor and awesome massive window, as well, so glad we stopped in.

From the moment we walked in, we knew this restaurant was special. The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between warm and lively—filled with the aroma of slow-cooked meats, garlic, and spices that instantly transport you to Miami. The food is nothing short of phenomenal. The What truly sets this place apart, though, is the service. Every staff member was attentive, friendly, and eager to share recommendations, making the entire experience feel personal and welcoming. We’ll be coming back again and again. Highly recommend!

It’s definitely a unique atmosphere, with a lot of Miami and Florida themed decor. We got seated pretty quickly given how large our party was and how busy the place was. The reception waiter was a bit rude though and acted like we couldn’t comprehend basic logic. The El Nacional dish was very good, delicious and good presentation, although I was hoping for bigger servings.

We had been on our way to a different breakfast place near UVA but stumbled upon Guajiros while searching for parking. This was a lucky find! Despite not being especially hungry at first, the menu quickly changed that. The menu, which many have already posted, is a showcase of Cuban comfort food, packed with plantains, pork prepared in several ways, pressed pork and steak sandwiches, beans, rice, eggs, OH MY! It was a whirlwind of food that I don't even remember what any of the dishes were called! So glad we saw the "Open" sign while circling block after block looking for parking! Guajiros turned out to be a perfect and unexpected breakfast spot. The atmosphere was very laid back and service was awesome. Food came much more quickly than expected. I still don't know how the one server was able to handle the entire dining area. She was amazing! Will definitely return if I'm back in Charlottesville again.

Visitors can enjoy a relaxing atmosphere while sipping on coffee, mocha, or drinking chocolate paired with delectable chocolate confections or truffles.
So far I've had the Maya chocolate, brown butter caramel chocolate, a hot cocoa from the cafe, and the Maya drinking chocolate mix, and they have all been incredibly delicious! The service has been really friendly too and my very first time in the store, the cashier even covered the cost of my Maya chocolate to celebrate my daughter's (of the same name) birthday. I also love that you can see into the kitchen where they're making chocolates, and the store always smells incredible! Update: also had the brownie and they're deliciously rich! Found out the cashier who paid for our Maya chocolate is named Amy, and she is a joy to interact with, always upbeat and friendly, so be sure to go at least once when she's on shift :)

North American Sake Brewery & Bad Luck Ramen Bar is a unique and creative spot in Charlottesville, Virginia. It's the first and only sake brewery in the area, offering a variety of sakes such as Real Magic, Big Baby, and Quiet Giant. You can enjoy a sake flight to sample different options before making your choice. The brewery also features a pan-Asian kitchen serving sushi, sashimi, and seared tuna.
Cool, sexy, friendly, delicious. I’m in town for one night and am so lucky to have taken a chance on this place. It exceeded my expectations. Everything about this place is cool, but not in an obvious too-cool sort of way. The bartender was extremely nice and helped me pick a sake, which they brew on site. Just the vibe and local (!) sake would warrant a five star review from me, but the ramen was so delicious! I can’t say enough. It’s maybe too adventurous for some, but I loved everything about my experience here.
Richard W — Google review
Beautiful place. Nice date idea. Great bar menu and a good place to try the sake flights if you like Sake! I would say the ramen is “Asian Inspired” but it gives me the Dragons Den Bobba vibes. Broth tasted like 100% all soy sauce and noodles were pretty tough to chew. Might come back for the drinks but not the food. Was not expecting the hard core heavy metal music in a ramen place but I guess workers should be able to vibe to their own thing at work.

Such a marvelous find! Adjacent to the IX Art Gallery. We loved the Tempura Shrimp, Spicy Tuna Sushi Rolls & the delicious Red Dragon wings. Highly recommend the Sake flight, all brewed in-house. Makes a great change from the usual beers ;) We need to return to sample their Ramen!

The spacious deck with sun, covered shade, and a fire pit offers a great place for you and your 4-legged bestie! Great menu with ramen, sushi, and small plates and extensive drink options. I loved the sake flight. The rice is what distinguishes great sushi, and theirs was top-notch. I’m also a dumpling snob. Again, NAS’s were San Francisco worthy! One interesting note is that all the different styles we tasted start from the same rice base, but there are differences in how it's milled and fermented that make the different flavors. Anyway our favorite was a toss up between Olympus and Bad Baby. They also have plenty of good indoor and outdoor seating. Shame the kitchen was not open as I've seen good reviews.

Truly the best ramen in Charlottesville. Their funky sake creations are super fun and creative, and the vibe is just awesome. Staff are always friendly and on point with service. One of my favorite spots in town!

In the heart of Belmont, Charlottesville, you'll find Conmole, a cozy restaurant offering authentic Mexican cuisine. This gay-owned and operated establishment is known for its impeccable Oaxacan mole and other delightful dishes. The colorful ambiance and a cozy patio dining area make it an ideal spot for a memorable date night or a family gathering.
The Enfrijoladas (no carne) were delicious! Lots of great flavors, especially the beans. My partner liked the Mole Guajillo con carne. Our server was so friendly and kind, he greeted us immediately as we entered. The interior is beautiful and well designed! We are excited to come back and dine on their patio in the warmer months.

I am from central Mexico, so I have a preference for spicy red mole with yellow rice, but also enjoy mole poblano. Having said that, I visited Conmole with open an mind, and I was excited to try the regional varieties from Oaxaca. We ordered empanadas, tamales, mole de frijol negro, and mole juagillo. My favorite was the mole de juagillo, but the absolute star of the night was the tamal de huitlacoche. I thoroughly enjoyed the complexity of flavors, the texture and the sauce. I’m very pleased and would go back, however the tres leches chocolate cake was a bit dry. I don’t think it does justice to a traditional tres leches, but I appreciate the vision (offering the chocolate version and adding the milk mix right before serving).

Real, authentic Mexican food centered around their mole (MO-lay). Really spectacular execution and complementarity in the dishes. A nice place for a lightly upscale casual bite and drinks, in the quaint Belmont neighborhood

Ate on the patio since the weather was perfect. Mole Negro Chicken was novel for me. A chocolate sauce on chicken is an interesting combination. Guajillo mole costillas is pork ribs in sauce. More conventional. Both dishes were good in terms of meat and flavor. Portion sizes felt small relative to the price, but I'm glad I had the experience. Service was attentive and helpful.

This restaurant was an amazing experience. The empanada was delicious. It was baked instead of fried, which allowed the flavor of fresh bread to shine. The mole was unique with a chocolate sauce base that was unique and tasty. The chocolate tres leches was rich and moist with nice rich chocolatey flavor. Staff were friendly and attentive and extremely helpful when choosing what to eat. I would come here again

We were seated quickly by a very friendly staff member. I got the margarita and it was lovely. Well balanced, with a salt rim that wasn't too heavy. We got a tamale first and that's when I knew we were in for a treat, the masa was so smooth, the chicken soft and the sauce was incredible. This was one of those silent table kind of meals. We were too busy eating for conversation! Next we got the mole negro, which we got with chicken, and oh God. It fell off the bone, the sauce was incredible, warm and comforting and complex with a sweet heat that built up to be perfect. I could eat this all day! Overall, this place has fantastic shareable portions of amazing Mexican food in an adorable little restaurant.

I'm a huge fan of Oaxacan cuisine and CONMOLE did not disappoint! The mole guajillo with pork ribs was excellent. My only suggestion would be: if mole is the pride and namesake of the restaurant and serving as a gateway into tasting more of Oaxaca, why isn't mole even more of a star? What is mole, what makes it so complex, and why is it so special to Oaxaca? I know how much work it must take to make your mole pastes - I think there's even more of an opportunity here to share and show off. Could you offer an appetizer tasting flight of your house moles, maybe with some warm tortillas and a quick run-through by the waiter of the key ingredients of each/what they are tradionally served with? I would have ordered that in a heartbeat. Hopefully next time I'm in town, I can try your delicious barbacoa. Thank you so much!

Poor Value, Weak Menu. 2 items not available on a short list. My chicken with mole sauce was 40 bucks for a thigh and a drumstick in a bowl of mole. A small bowl of rice left me with lots of sauce. I wondered - what am i supposed to do with the rest of this mole, eat it like soup? I didnt like to waste all that mole but truth be told it was not even that special after all the fuss they make over it! The skinny two of us had a snack and a beer each for 100 dollars. We arrived early like 515 on a thursday and since we had no reso got a tiny two top beside the greeter that shouldnt even be a spot. There were still 80% open tables when we left. The water person tried to tell us to order 3-4 items for two people as they were smaller items and it seemed kind of pushy considering the prices. I guess she was right as it wasnt much food but it was tough to find two things we wanted on the short menu.

Tonic is a stylish and breezy establishment located near Charlottesville's historic Downtown Mall. Despite opening during the pandemic, the restaurant has thrived under the leadership of experienced chef Christopher D'Avino. Emphasizing seasonal and sustainable cuisine, Tonic takes pride in sourcing its ingredients from local farmers and producers.
I came in for a quiet brunch at the bar on a Saturday and was met with friendly staff and delicious food. The fried chicken sandwich was delish and light and airy with a challah bun and the crispiest chicken breading and my Bloody Mary had house pickled veggies. I’m looking forward to coming back to try the double smash burger next time!
Rosa-Anna W — Google review
We came in for dinner this Sunday and left disappointed. The main issue was my wife's chicken was burnt and overcooked. Not blackened, it was completely burnt on the outside. You couldn't even taste anything except burnt skin. My phone was dead so unfortunately I couldn't get a picture. The fact that the expo, cook, and server sent this out, we decided we had no confidence to ask for a replacement from the staff. There restaurant was almost empty at the time, so it's not like they were slammed. The rockfish was good at least or I would have given them 1 star. The pickled shrimp was pretty disappointing as well. No flavor, there was 1 pepper slice in the dish and just shrimp with, and saltine crackers for $14. Maybe the dish just wasn't for me but I wasn't too upset about that until they served us the burnt chicken. The servers were nice, drinks were okay. The atmosphere is nice outdoors ,but I definitely would not return.
Seadevil _ — Google review
I really struggled whether not to give this place a three-star rating or a two-star rating mostly because the portions were ridiculously small especially for the price. I ordered the shrimping grits it was $26 and it was like the portion size of an appetizer My wife ordered a salmon sandwich and there was more bread than salmon and I literally left hungry. Flavor of the food was okay he was fine it just wasn't enough of it and I'm not saying that you have to serve so much that someone's taking home dinner for the next night but I shouldn't leave hungry at any price. One thing that really got me which was just sort of threw me off a little bit was the hose was really adamant about people having reservations then was make it seem as if us not having reservations was going to be a big issue when there was literally one couple at the restaurant at the time I mean one other couple there and he was saying that there were some 6:00 reservations but we arrived at 5:00 technically 5:09 because I checked my watch. When we receded and eating another couple came and sat down and they didn't like where they were seated so they got up to move to another seat like two tables over and the guy came over and said oh no you can't move we have reservations and that don't mess up the seating or something to that effect and it seemed really really odd and overly aggressive considering that there was virtually no one there. By the time we left which was right around 6:00 there were a few people that started to come in but even after we had walked around for a big got dessert and came back it wasn't like the place was jam packed there was still plenty of seating in the place and I was sitting outdoors there was plenty of seating outdoors and for what I saw There was no one sitting indoors. I have to say I would not go back here The food was just okay the prices were high considering the amount of food that you got if I received a full-size normal portion that had me not leaving hungry I would have been fine with the dollar amount but because of the small amount of food I felt like it was way overpriced. I will say though I had a nice brown ale that was cold and good I mean it's hard to go wrong with a nice cold beer.

Glad we stopped at this establishment. We only had a drink and appetizer (feta spread with grilled bread) but loved the outdoor atmosphere and friendly service. There is also indoor seating. Feta spread was nicely flavored with lemon zest.

What a great outdoor space , great location , good service . But, oh my goodness , food was incredibly disappointing . There are 2 “main” salads on the menu - at 6:00 PM , one was no longer available . I had the eggplant sandwich - it was good , open faced but certainly not a portion that would feed a heartier appetite . Very over priced for what it was . I would recommend going for a cocktail , maybe a small plate app but def not for dinner . Really a shame as a wonderful space

We've had several delicious meals at Tonic - we absolutely love the snack boards to start, and the ever-changing entrees are a hit every time - definitely appreciate the shift with the seasons. Plenty of gluten free options and the variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages is much appreciated. The outdoor seating is the cherry on top in nice weather!

Tonic, a hidden gem of Cville? Tonic so far has not failed us. Early in the pandemic it was hit and miss, however we have gone back for brunch and dinner. So, its the kind of place that you should know about. The atmosphere, if you're sitting outdoor, its lovely especially in the fall, spring or winter cool, the cocktails are inventive, and selective. I personal am not a Gin fan, however they do have a different drink for everyone. Tequila, whiskey, vodka and an Aperol spritz. Also, drinks are reasonable for Cville. NOW, the food! Absolutely delicious. I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich, and not your average sandwich. They use a juicy, chicken thigh that’s perfectly seasoned and fried to perfection. I think double or triple breaded. SO MUCH CRUNCH FACTOR like, audible-in-a-quiet-room kind of crunch. The spice level hits a sweet and bold spice, just enough to wake up your taste buds, but balanced. The staff is very nice, however if a large party is there just be prepared, because they do the best they can, with what they have. if you got this far, sorry for no photos. I'm the person that will usually leave my phone at home, so I can have more engaging with my guest. Cheers everyone!

The drink menu is INCREDIBLE. Very crafty, creative, flavorful, and interesting drinks. Definitely the best cocktail menu I have seen they use very high quality ingredients. The food was alright, it was plated very well and the presentation was on point. The food just didn’t live up to the presentation. Overall I will definitely come back here for drinks, but most likely not food.

The Nook is a long-standing eatery located in downtown Charlottesville, offering both indoor and outdoor seating options. Known for its all-day diner classics and American comfort food, this bustling spot has been a favorite among locals for over three generations. The menu is filled with familiar breakfast dishes and other American favorites, served with a smile by the friendly staff. Whether you're craving pancakes for the kids or a hearty breakfast for yourself, The Nook provides a casual dining experience at reasonable prices.
I had the Kimchi burger and I hope they make that a permanent addition to the menu! The kimchi had just right amount of spice, the bacon was perfect in flavor and texture! The cheddar cheese was also very flavorful! The sauce was also very delicious! The fries were also very good. I am excited to return to pick up our daughter or drop her back off to school so I can get another burger!

Great spot for a meal & to visit. They serve all day breakfast choices- friends enjoyed veggie omelet with potatoes, onions & peppers… while the other had the classic with fresh blueberries added on top of pancakes. I enjoyed a special - fish tacos with mango salsa- delicious! Generous portions & nice staff.

Came here with my wife for lunch and sat outside in the patio area. I got the meatloaf sandwich and it was solid, I wouldn’t say it was mindblowing but it was good. My wife got the chorizo breakfast bowl and it was massive and she was happy with it. There was also a random man playing the saxophone outside not connected to the restaurant that was kind of nice. The inside area also looked cool though we did not eat there.

••FULL MENU AVAILABLE ALL DAY•• Extensive menu of food options that are inclusive of dietary restrictions. I appreciate the rainbow flag at the bar as well as the "ANYBODY" sign on the bathroom door. The place might benefit from having a changing table in the bathroom (maybe to the left of the paper towels) because currently there is no fold-down table option for changing diapers. Pricing is a tad bit high if you are hoping for a more affordable place to go, but the portions are decent and the experience of going downtown and having a more relaxed morning--especially if you get the luxury of eating outside, make it worth the money. Check the back of the menu for kids menu and weekly specials!

I recently dined at The Nook, located in the historic downtown mall of Charlottesville, and it was a delightful experience. The outdoor seating area was clean and inviting, with a thoughtful water bowl for dogs, making it a perfect spot for pet owners. The standout dish was the Berries & Cream Stuffed French Toast—classic artisan bread filled with sweet mascarpone cream cheese and macerated strawberries, all topped with a blueberry-strawberry medley. It was, without a doubt, the best French toast I’ve ever had: perfectly cooked and deliciously sweet. The service was exceptional, with our waitress being incredibly friendly and attentive. If you’re looking for a charming brunch spot with fantastic food and a welcoming atmosphere, The Nook is a must-visit.

Have been here before and had a great breakfast. Today however the food was bad. Pancakes didn't taste good, biscuits and gravy were disconnected in the flavors and very butter forward. The charizo bowl was lack luster too. Our waitress was super sweet and nice but the lady at the door who we asked for the check from didn't even apologize when we said the food wasn't good and to please have the check. Except for our waitress the staff looked beat down and not happy to be there. Kind of like the food lol. I hope they turn it around, this used to be pretty tasty for breakfast

We picked here without knowing much about it. There was a small wait to be seated. The food was excellent. The menu is fun. Not wild but different and the items that may seem simple are prepared excellently, making for an excellent experience. The space is beautiful. We thought the prices were reasonable. We absolutely look forward to eating here again.

Such a great spot for some classic (and not so classic) breakfast food. Who can say no to a breakfast burrito that also has tater tots in it?? It’s one of those spots that you want to save space for dessert based on the nice handwritten specials out front and home made pie. Do yourself a favor and come hungry!

Botanical Plant-Based Fare is a vibrant and colorful vegan fast casual restaurant located on the Downtown Mall. The menu features delightful dishes such as the Chickpea Tuna Sandwich, Roasted Sweet Potato Bowl with chili cashews and BBQ drizzle, and an intriguing Miso Mac & Cheese. This spot offers options for both lunch and dinner, catering to vegetarians, vegans, and plant lovers alike.
The offerings all sound tasty so it was hard to choose. I went with the combo deal and picked a half sandwich plua the mac & cheese and alsk ordered a small terra salad. The crispy chix sandwich is made of fried oyster mushrooms with mayo and pickled purple cabbage, a lil salty a lil sweet. The bread was perfectly crispy. I devoured the Mac and cheese. The bread crumbs and bacon were a great touch to the savory and creamy dish. Service was fast and friendly. The resturant is off a main walking road, conveniently located near a bunch of other cute shops. It also has two spots within the store with items for sale like teas, cookbooks, and merch. I'd visit again and order something new of their menu as they seem to do everything well.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Clean, creative, and full of heart I’m not vegan, but I love food that’s healthy, clean, and made with intention — and this place nailed it. I ordered the Gochu Street Corn plate and the Miso Mac & Cheese, and both were standout dishes. The Gochu Street Corn was bright and flavorful, with a subtle spiciness that complemented (not overpowered) the sweetness of the corn. It had just the right amount of zip without being overwhelming. The Miso Mac & Cheese was creamy and comforting, yet felt lighter and more thoughtful than a typical mac & cheese. The miso brought a depth and savory twist I didn’t expect — in the best way. Visually, everything was beautifully plated. You could tell care went into arranging the ingredients so each element had space to shine. The atmosphere added to the experience: relaxed, welcoming, and with a vibe that feels intentional (in décor, music, lighting) — not trying too hard, just right. The service was warm and unobtrusive. If you’re seeking a place that pushes beyond “just tasty” to “meaningful and mindful,” this spot deserves a try. I’ll be coming back for sure.

Cauliflower dish was pretty good. The wonton nachos were quite delicious. The Caesar salad dressing was pretty good and flavorful as well. The Okono cakes were very flavorful with their gochujang aïoli sauce. The light roasted coffee was also flavorful as was the chai latte, although perhaps a bit sugary.

Extremely delicious food! Was in the town for the weekend and stopped in for brunch because I saw this restaurant was exclusively plant-based. I got the gluten-free savory waffles (under the brunch menu waffles 2 ways) which could quite easily be the tastiest breakfast I’ve ever had. Was able to eat outdoors and enjoy the weather too ☀️ Highly recommend and can’t wait to come back and try some more!

We found this place while searching on. Happy Cow for vegan options in Charlottesville. This place popped up in two different locations (they have one in another city also with reduced hours). I was really excited to try this because the menu is ALL VEGAN and mostly Gluten Free. There were so many choices that I didn't know where to start, honestly. So we ended up splitting a few different dishes to try and taste the diversity they had to offer. I got a Chai Latte and my husband got a Matcha Latte to drink. Both were absolutely delicious. For food, we decided to try the following: Rainbow Terra Salad Umami Potatoes Chickpea Tuna Boats Okono Cakes (we really wanted the Crab Cakes, which were on the summer specials list, but they have wheat protein in them, so not GF... unfortunately) All of these were fantastic! I love that they used purple cabbage and carrots for the Okono Cakes, which seem similar to Latke's, but not nutrient dense. In all honesty, I wanted to go back for dinner to try some of the other options, but we weren't in the same area anymore. Overall, the food and service was great. Lance was very knowledge and friendly and also gave us some great insight about other cool things to do in the area that the locals like. Much appreciated!

I absolutely love this place and so does my non-vegan significant other. To have vegan and gluten free options the way they do? Amazing. We've never waited very long and everything is so good. I've had the Cauliflower Nubs (both appetize and the full dish), the special Hash browns, Savory and Sweet Waffles (savory is my favorite), Mac n cheese, Mushroom based chicken sandwich (I don't know the actual names of the dishes). I don't do fake meats and they have plenty of non processed options without the fake vegan meats. Their GF Almond cookies are great for an occasional treat. If In doubt, give it a try. I will miss them when I move back to NC.

The Virginian, established in 1923, is a cherished local establishment in Charlottesville. It offers classic American cuisine within a charming rustic setting. This spot is popular among UVA alums and those seeking an authentic wahoo bar experience. Located on University Avenue, it's part of the city's rich dining history. The menu may not be gourmet, but it's all about embracing tradition and savoring their renowned 'Stumble Down Mac N' Cheese.'
We visited on a Monday night around 6:30pm. We were sat almost immediately and given prompt drink service. Our food arrived pretty swiftly after as well. The food was great, and the portions were generous. My only demerit for the service was that after we paid our check, our waitress never returned with the box I had requested. We waited for several minutes, and eventually I grabbed my own box.

Still very reminiscent of a bar and restaurant founded in the early 1900’s. The atmosphere was very good. Has an upper and lower level. The food is amazing! Great choices. Our food came out hot, fast, and correct. Service at first was very good. It tapered off after our food was served. There are a few TV’s, but not considered a sports bar. Price was reasonable at about $30 a person. We did not partake in any drink specials. Dinner menu starts at 5PM.

Stick to the bar food or burgers. Do not order an entree or “signature” plate. Very sad. Worst plate I ever saw— crab cakes. It looked like shoe fly pie and taste was not far from that. We’ve had hundreds.. from Maryland and know these are “Virginia” but not even a real meal. This is closer to a prison loaf. Bourbon Chicken also should be removed from the menu. Cobb salad was great, how can you screw that up? Great service and vibe.

Went for the institution it is. It's a tiny narrow restaurant. Service is good and food is nice too. We got a hummus platter and some drinks.

I came here on a whim for Sunday brunch today. It's an historic setting near campus, I suppose - maybe for someone who attended school here. ChatGPT highly recommended it, but the food was tragically underwhelming for the price. The coffee was the plain old weak restaurant variety and my table smelled of sour cleaning cloths. The service was OK, but not at all worth the hype, or the price. There are so many other better options nearby.

Revolutionary Soup is a casual, counter-serve eatery that offers farm-to-table soups and sandwiches along with artisanal beer and wine. The menu features a variety of vegetarian and vegan soup options, including the popular Peanut Tofu Soup. This local chain is known for its high-quality soups made with local ingredients, earning it the title of best Vegetarian menu in town by The C-Ville.
On a cold, rainy fall day, a bowl of hot soup is a great idea. If you're in this town, make sure Revolutionary Soup is providing that soup. They have a pick two option that lets you try a half sandwich (served as a wrap) and a small soup. We each had one plus a third small soup on the side for a total of five menu options. Every single one of them would be worth having again on their own. Among the soups, though, the lamb curry truly stood out as an outstanding flavor. Both the Kickin' Chicken and Thai Chicken wraps were amazing.

The food is decent, but it’s seriously overpriced for what you get. Portions are small, and the quality doesn’t match the cost. It’s fine in a pinch, but there are better options nearby that offer more value for the money.

Went for lunch on a weekday. They weren't too busy and we were able to get a table and get our food without too much wait. We both ordered a pick two. Wanted to try something local. Glad we did. The steak and cheese was the best sandwich out of the three. The potato rosemary was smooth and flavorful. The other soups were good. The BLT is an easy classic. The only drawback was the Adam was turned into a wrapped and sadly was very dry.

It was our first time having lunch at Boylan Heights with the family, and we really enjoyed it. We loved the open-air atmosphere — it was so nice to enjoy a meal while feeling the breeze and watching a basketball game on TV. The kids were especially excited to see a train go by — that was a fun and unexpected highlight for them! One small thing: The vegetarian burger I had that day was a bit dry and harder than what I’ve had elsewhere. I’m not sure if that’s how it’s usually served, but it didn’t affect our overall great experience. We’ll definitely be back again!

Chicken was moist and flavorful with a light and crispy breading. I had the BOMB or burger of the month, called Kickin’ Chicken, which is fried chicken on a brioche roll topped with Cole slaw and aioli with hot sauce on the side. My wife had the loaded nachos, which were very good. They made a grill cheese sandwich on good bread for my son. It was terrific—he ate both halves. A bit noisy so we ate outside.

Walking around campus as students were coming back to school we decided to check out the burgers at this place. There are 2 floors with the downstairs open for lunch. The burgers were ok. I don't think they were anything amazing. There were only 2 people waiting on tables and staff had to run up to the kitchen (2nd floor) to get food. The meal took a long time as they were short-staffed.

Visiting UVA. Decided to have lunch on the corner. Boylan was great. Started with draft beers with many to choose from. Easy choice on the appetizer with cheese sticks. They were the same cheese sticks you get at just about every bar, tasty but nothing special. We did two build-to-order burgers. They were juicy, good flavor and cooked just right. Nice fresh toppings. One also ordered from their brunch menu. Great sandwich. Our server was a little stretched because they were busier than expected but she worked very hard to take good care of everyone. Will definitely be back the next time we're in town. Fun first visit to UVA and "the corner."

I came here for a quick bite and drink to sit out and enjoy the sun. The waitress was very nice. Beer selection was a decent mix of a few locals and commercial beers. Wings were good and so were the "Afternoon Special" chicken bites.

Overall experience was awesome. We tried wahoo for our drinks. Room 121 for our burgers. Curly fries were awesome too. The servers were very friendly and overall distanced tables and the fact that they opened all the walls to ventilate the area was also a plus. During this pandemic I recommend this place because they are doing what they can to keep the people and the area safe. I loved the fact that hand sanitizers were placed in middle so you can always use it. Thank you also Aimee for making awesome experience =)

Great meaty burgers, but I prefer Riverside lunch overall for Cville burgers. Had a Room 121 w double beef. Beef ever so slightly dry and/or overcooked for my liking but still great. Curly fries delicious. Huge serving. A few beers and watched the NBA east finals game 1. Waitress was very attentive and friendly. A few times they forgot to put the sound on and had music on instead - i like the idea of putting on music during ad breaks though. Massive big screen and a number of other standard screens. Great college vibe.

Step into the lively ambiance of Charlottesville City Market, an open-air marketplace that truly captures the essence of local culture. This cherished destination is a favorite among both locals and tourists, offering a delightful mix of fresh produce, handmade crafts, and live entertainment. With numerous vendors showcasing everything from seasonal fruits and vegetables to delectable baked goods and artisanal items, there's something for everyone to enjoy. One inspiring story that originated here is that of Little Manila.
I tend to choose this market over others because in my opinion it changes the most. I like to see different stuff every time I go!! Everyone is so nice and the vendors are amazing. It's so easy to just park and enjoy the market and walk the downtown.
Alexandra R — Google review
I've been going here every weekend for as long as I can remember! I can't praise it enough, it's something you need to experience for yourself. Definitely stop by and walk on the downtown mall after, the perfect Saturday afternoon!
Katie K — Google review
I love this farmers market. There are so many vendors! There was a jewelry vendor (I bought beautiful earrings from her) and a vendor who carved pens. For food, there was a plethora of produce! Tomatoes, peppers, cuckes, breads and sweets. A woman who had olive oil, and coffee. And, of course, flowers and plants. All vendors had decent prices and were friendly. Parking was not easy to find, especially with a handicap. The other downfall is there isn’t any shade to cool off. I look forward to Saturday mornings to see what goodies are waiting for me!

So many different booths of great items! :) Veggies, food/drink trucks, and more!!

This place is always so amazing! Should've taken more pics, but did fall in love with this one spot, selling cacti and succulents! Had to get one, and always have to go see my Orchid people! And sooooo many yummy options for food and fresh produce and art. Def coming every Saturday before work..

Great market for the area. Vendors come from 2-3 hours away when weather permits. If it’s overly windy or inclement weather it can be a hit or mis with how many vendors are there.

Champion Brewing Company is a vibrant pub known as the "missile factory" that produces a variety of core and seasonal beers at its 30-Barrel brewhouse. The downtown tap room offers an ever-changing selection of innovative seasonal, one-offs, and barrel-aged wild beers in a lively atmosphere with games and an outdoor patio.
Such a great find on our visit to Charlottesville, great beer, a great space, and great bartenders! The beer was innovative and flavorful, in the right way. The space had indoor and outdoor options, a shuffleboard table, pinball, and board games. The staff was so lovely and welcoming. And the nachos, though not fancy, were delicious! Would recommend stopping by to anyone who enjoys good beer.
Anna V — Google review
Champion has always showed great promise and is starting to deliver. The spot is cozy if a little secluded, and they do a good job of getting food trucks to swing by. Recommend the Black Me Stout, Positive Jam, and Shower Beer to start with.
Alex H — Google review
Pretty good spot for some good beer. Not a ton of food options but looked good. The interior is smaller but still could fit a crowd. I really enjoyed a few of their IPAs.
Matt — Google review
Great experience in their outdoor garden. Service was amazing and the beers were both tasty and creative. The Low Brow was more flavorful than a seltzer like that has a right to be!
Dave M — Google review
Fun atmosphere and lots of outdoor seating. Affordable, classic pub style food. Not many beers stood out as extremely memorable, but overall solid and most enjoyable.

This place is the bees knees. Grab a spot outside, any of the cold beers and I suggest the three hot dog platter and your golden.
Wesley R — Google review
It has been interesting to see how this place has grown. It's become a staple of downtown and has a pretty solid following. It's a pretty small tasting room so it is nice that they put the tables outside. The outdoor stage is pretty cool and has a lot of potential. They have also done some cool collaborations with bands in the past.

Tilman's is a wine-focused spot located directly on the mall, offering a similar vibe to its sister restaurant, Tonic. It's an ideal place to enjoy great wine and delicious paninis while watching the pedestrian traffic of the downtown mall. The happy hour specials for food and wine are quite popular, and guests can even bring their own bottle with just a corkage fee. This great wine bar also serves sandwiches and small plates like the hearty Fitzroy.
We had a delightful experience at Tilman's! We stopped for a happy hour snack and had wine and cheese, cocktails and the most amazing butternut squash soup we have ever tasted!
Jennifer R — Google review
Recently my wife and I were early for a dinner reservation and luckily happened upon Tilman’s for a quick round. They have a solid selection of drinks, even spirit free for those who don’t partake. Unfortunately we were short for time so we didn’t have time to check out their shop, which appeared to be well stocked.
Jeremy K — Google review
Not inexpensive but always worth it. For takeout. They always have orders ready on time and for dine in the service is always good. The ingredients they use are always fresh and the food while smaller is clean and robust. Great for lunch and brunch. Weekdays or weekends and their cheese offerings are fantastic. A must for locals or tourists, will not fail.
Jd — Google review
To begin, my wife and I didn't know what to expect with this gem along the downtown pedestrian mall in Charlottesville, but it was an intriguing concept given the counter service for ordering. We're so glad we made the decision. They were quite attentive in the sense of bringing food and drinks out right away, refilling out water carafe and engaging in conversation when that was appropriate. As you can see from my photos, there's a bit of a store concept also here with unique food and beverage related products. Because we hadn't been here before, we did opt for reservations. It is worth noting that dining at the bar in the back was another option. We both had european style sandwiches which were quite delicious and on the lighter side, which is what we wanted this particular evening. That also helped to keep the cost down. The cocktail I had was lovely as well. This was a great example of being rewarded for being open to a new experience, which is what travel is (or should be) ultimately all about. Check it out!
Mark H — Google review
The service was stellar, the cheese selection is great, the wine/cocktail options are decent, but I think the food is largely 3/5 stars. The pickle plate is lackluster and they sell a bland salsa under the name of “a tomato and onion gazpacho”. That said, the brie, fig, and speck crostini was good. I think we just ordered the wrong things - play it safe and come for the cheese/wine.
Dylan P — Google review
Everything is on the pricey side, but food and drinks were delicious. Intimate, cozy vibes. Great for a casual date night. The servers all seemed like they didn't want to be there.
Brooke S — Google review
The speck crostini was delicious. We sat on the patio and it was lovely. Ask for Lara if you are here - she was wonderful! So attentive and kind.
Rachel — Google review
Really nice little spot on the downtown mall. They do a happy hour from 3-6pm where there are several wines by the glass for about $6. I tried some of the cheeses, and they were great. They have numerous meats, cheeses, and food for sale there, along with a selection of wine from various parts of the world. The bar has about 8-10 seats, and there are also a few small tables. If you want to do a sandwich there for lunch you can sit at the window and watch people walk by. Only downside is on occasion you'll get a short pour (this didn't happen to me, but a friend had that happen).
