The Torpedo Factory Art Center is a former naval munitions factory turned into an art haven, housing over 160 artists in 82 open studios. Visitors can explore and purchase a wide range of artworks including paintings, photos, mixed media pieces, sculptures, and jewelry. The center also offers free demos on Saturdays where patrons can watch the artists at work and engage in discussions about their creative process.
There’s 3 floors to explore inside the Torpedo. There’s different exhibition on each floors and the arts are for sale as well. The 3rd floor is like a little museum that showcases the history of Toledo factory, African American Waterfront Heritage Trail and some Archaeological stuff was on display too. You will enjoy visiting if you love artwork. Parking garage and street parking is available. No tickets needed for entry.

Service in atmosphere was on point food was nice and all you can eat for brunch. Great views, great customer service and under direction of Chris from housewives of Potomac. This place has a few good reasons why you should check it out I’m glad I did. PS be on a diet coming here. Paid parking below

I have been going here for 25 years. I love it. Lots of bathrooms. Good air conditioning. Fun shops nearby. You have to see the glass aquariums the print studios and the views from the studios around the elevators are fantastic. We met the current president Edward Mccluney. The sun print artist has items that say torpedo factory that make good gifts.

A nice building at a gorgeous river front location in Alexandria, VA. Spacious, with a lot of cozy boutiques and art shops, creative studios and workshops. The only thing that is missing there is a talent. And this is a must for any art center. But it is definitely a positive influence, more like a community gallery and public exhibition space.
Pine F — Google review
This place is Really really cool. It is a massive creative space with 3 whole floors of art studios and artists making, Exhibiting and selling some truly spectacular works of art, all within a historical building where they actually used to build torpedoes. There’s some poetry in the fact that a place that once only created instruments of Destruction is now a place of creativity and artistic beauty. If you really like art, or are looking for something nice to get for yourself or as a gift to someone you care about I totally recommend checking this place out. Even if you end up just looking around and the pieces that are for sale are outside your price range you will still be glad you came. Support your local artist and come check this place out.

There were so many places showcasing stunning artworks and paintings, but one piece really stood out—a breathtaking snow mountain scene painted by a talented artist. 🖌️🏔️ Her work was so realistic, it felt like you could step right into it! The best part? All her paintings were bought by an admiring fellow artist. 🎨👏 What an inspiration!

Just discovered Susan Sanders' stellar 2nd floor Torpedo Factory gallery of hand painted, 3D printed earrings, brooches, pendants, necklaces, and beads! Everything in her atelier is original and beautiful; and she also accepts special orders. I'm so glad I stopped in to meet Susan and find my new favorite pair of earrings: Susan's gorgeous, dangling Quarter Twist masterpieces of wearable art, which she 3D printed to her own design then brush-painted with many layers to achieve lovely color and depth.
Jill D — Google review
It’s free! There are three floors full of little shops displaying art work of various kinds taking up this whole building! We enjoyed how you can see the arts work space and watch them create. There’s a huge variety, but almost everything was very expensive in all the shops. Needless to say, but we didn’t buy anything but still had a good time walking and taking in all the artists and their work. Would recommend if you’re looking for an art piece or just killing time.

The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum in Alexandria is a rare gem, offering visitors a glimpse into the world of an authentic apothecary that remained virtually untouched since its closure in 1933. The museum provides 30-minute tours that delve into the history of its renowned potions and showcases an array of preserved tinctures, scales, and peculiar bottles with handwritten labels.
What a cool authentic time capsule of an early US Apothecary. Well worth the time! They even had a letter from Martha Washington ordering supplies from them. The upstairs work shop contains all the original ingredients, storage bins, and tools of the trade that have been there for over 200 years.
Jim B — Google review
So worth checking out. A rare time capsule. So rare in fact, that even the original owners realized it was worth preserving with as much originality as possible...back in the 1700s! It's also worth your money for the guided tour. Our guide was wonderful.
Megan B — Google review
I had to pleasure of taking the poison tour that was offered by the museum, and I had so much fun learning about the way people in the late 1800 to early 1900s utilized what we now know was poisonous chemicals and herbs as unique treatment methods. It was so cool getting to tour the shop and storage spaces and learn about how the shop operated when it was still in business. I would love to come back and take another tour during their normal business hours to browse the exhibits, but Gray, our tour guide did a phenomenal job during our hour-long tour!
Mimi F — Google review
A preserved time capsule of an authentic apothecary. The guides were very informative and the exhibit showed original apothecary jars with the materials preserved inside. A unique look into the past.
Lola H — Google review
Great museum to visit if you like old vintage stuff. Tickets were 5$ for adults and 3$ for kids. The people working there are amazing and very friendly. Also their shop has a lot of things to check out.
Noel B — Google review
Amazing experience! Guide was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. This place is truly frozen in time, and you will learn so many surprising things about the way people used to treat ailments and practice medicine.
Emily H — Google review
Very interesting place to visit. We had a great tour guide that was able to answer any of our questions. I would reccomend stopping by if you're in the city.
Chris E — Google review
What a treasure! We went for the first time this week and it was so fascinating. The store was open during George Washington’s presidency and closed in approx 1930. We had a wide age range from lower elementary up to teens and the staff was so great with speaking to each group at their level. Our tour guide was delightful and so patient. The kids loved smelling the herbs and trying to guess how things were used. Seeing all the old furniture and bottles was really cool, I loved seeing the pill maker and a machine that could make corks the right size. There were other things I didn’t expect like perfume, razors, baby bottles, and dyes for clothes. I took so many pictures but I know there were things I missed…which means I need to go back! It was also fun to visit after reading “The Lost Apothecary”

Carlyle House Historic Park is a captivating destination in Old Town, offering a window into Alexandria's colonial heritage. The centerpiece is the 1753 Carlyle House, an elegant manor with lush gardens and intricate interior carvings. Guided tours provide insight into the Carlyle family's influence and the house's role in American history, including hosting notable figures like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
We took a wonderful tour of Carlyle House. Joe was our guide and he was full of information. We enjoyed the tour and hearing how the house was renovated and saved from being torn down. We enjoyed hearing about the reconstruction, seeing the original parts of the home, and furnishings from the colonial period. Highly recommend.

A wonderful historic house to visit. Built even before Mount Vernon and restored beautifully. The tour guide was very knowledgeable. It is only a short walk to this house from the waterfront.
Rachel R — Google review
I got my Keys to the City pass from the visitor's bureau, which opened at 10:00 am. My first stop was the nearby Carlyle House, which honored my Keys coupon. I noticed that tours start on the hour. It was around 10:10, and I didn't want to wait 50 minutes. Without any special request, a personal tour was begun for me at 10:10. Wow! Geoff was a wonderful historian. I thought he must have a decade of experience, but he actually was fairly new to the property. The tour was informational. The house is well-preserved, and the artifacts were helpful in imagining the lives of the contemporaries. There was a slave sleeping quarters shown, and I would like even more information about the enslaved people who created the wealth, did all the building, and worked on maintenance. There was good information about the roles of women in managing the household.
John E — Google review
Great tour. A knowledgeable docent gave us a comprehensive tour of the house with early history of Alexandria and America.
Yarissa G — Google review
Tour the house, our guide made it educational and fun. Totally recommend to visit the Carlyle house
Gonzalo ( — Google review
Guided tour of the house or self guided (free) admission of the basement. Great stop for those interested in the local history.
Ben I — Google review
The lady giving the tour was nice and the house was beautiful. On the downside, the whole tour was about Carlyle’s family living in the house. His role in the local slavery business and him owning many slaves was not addressed ONCE. Not a single mention about the slaves living in the house, their storys etc. and what cruelty they had to endure at this dark point in time in the American history. Very sad and frustrating.
Jstn. 0 — Google review
I've lived here all my life, and this was the first visit to this piece of history. The house has been beautifully restored to the original time it was built. The docents were so very knowledgeable, which helped to bring the house to life.

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a neoclassical shrine dedicated to George Washington, featuring an ornate hall, museum, and observation deck. Constructed between 1922 and 1932, the memorial's major interior spaces were left unfinished until after World War II. The building project brought together independent Grand Lodges of states and territories in a rare initiative among freemasons with national scope.
Such an amazing place. I saw this tower from my hotel and had to check it out. I figured the tour just took you up to the observation deck but there was so much more. Every room on every floor was packed full of history, art and architecture. Such grand spaces, only pictures can describe.
Jay S — Google review
Very Clean. Affordable tours. Great view at top. If you like architecture, there is plenty to see and learn on first and second floor. You can see and tour all in about 3-4 hours. For the history buffs, a lot of insights can be learned from the tours, specifically on the upper floors. 2 Active lodges are located here. Solve the elevator mystery!
Pepe L — Google review
Bummer of a time today, as I was very excited to explore and learn about Masons and GW’s involvement. Instead of learning about what Masons are and how meetings work and what their focus is, and how and why GW got involved, we were simply shuffled to each floor and told to look around. Each floor was vastly underwhelming, only a few notable pieces, such as a desk “thought to have been used by Washington.” They have a strand of his supposed hair, which is a big highlight apparently. With little explanation, we looked at bizarre costumes various masons and affiliate groups wear. View was nice, for $20 a hard pass. Wildly weird time. Wife is convinced this place is haunted. We live locally… any visitors reading this, skip unless you’re a Mason.
Devin O — Google review
Such a beautiful and historic landmark! The George Washington Masonic Memorial stands proudly over Alexandria and offers an amazing view from the top. The building itself is stunning, and the guided tour gives a lot of insight into both George Washington’s life and the Masonic history behind it. Peaceful, educational, and very well preserved — definitely worth a visit if you’re nearby.

The George Washington Masonic Memorial @ Alexandria is a neoclassical shrine dedicated to George Washington who was a Masonian himself. It was built during the period 1922-26 and offers a fascinating look at the history of Freemasonry. The tallest structure in the DC region, the top of the tower offers a panoramic 360 deg view of the DC region, the Potomac river and the town of Alexandria. It is advisable to take the guided tour as access to the top of the tower and use of elevators is aided by the staff
K M — Google review
Awesome! Loved it!! Wonderfully modern and air-conditioned, so makes for a great stop in the summer. Lots of George Washington artifacts, not just Masonic related. Although the Masonic history and chambers were really cool! Tour was $20/ea for 1 hour guided. Our guide, José, was fantastic! Very informative and such and interesting place. About 10 in our tour group. Book online ahead of time to guarantee entry. Ample free parking. It's rentable for events. Cool old "magical" elevators and don't forget the observation deck! The view is spectacular! I can't believe this place wasn't just crawling with people, but it was pretty quiet. Tour tickets grant you access for the entire day, so stay alls long as you like. Don't miss the clock that sat at Washington's bedside when he died. The attending physician cut the weight to mark the time for eternity.
CC — Google review
Great views. Museum rooms are put together rather well for being a Masonic temple. Neat artifacts and great tour guide. Worth a visit if you are in old town but the price for the museum is a bit excessive.

Gadsby's Tavern Museum is a historic site in Old Town Alexandria, VA, featuring two buildings - the tavern and the City Hotel. These were popular gathering places in the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum offers tours showcasing artifacts from that era and hosts special events throughout the year. It was frequented by notable figures like Presidents Washington and Jefferson, offering visitors a glimpse into Colonial times.
I used my Keys to the City pass and paid extra $3 for the guided tour. Gary was delightful!!! The displayed artifacts and Gary's narration gave a great view of day-to-day life in the 1700's. I was pleased to hear quite a bit of respectful and relevant information about the work of slaves in the tavern.

The guide was sick when I came so it wasn’t as fun to just go around reading everything. Worth checking out if you like history. Included in the city key pass. The person in the shop was really informative and nice. I was the only one there at 11am on a Friday .

Nice visit to the museum. The museum has been carefully preserved and it is really cool to walk the footsteps of our founding fathers. What really stands out is the people who work there. The guides are impressive with their knowledge of the history and we were really glad to have learned so much. They make it very interesting. It is a nice tour and you should put it on your itinerary.

I opted for the guided tour and am so glad I did. The docent was a college professor and really knew her history. Terrific presentation and a well-preserved historic place. Well worth a visit.

Stopped in for a quick lunch after being told from multiple people that this is a "must see" place in Old Town Alexandria. And let me tell you, they were right! It was lunch time so there were a few groups of people. There was a long wait time to get a table mainly due to low staffing. But everyone I encountered was super friendly and welcoming. After reading the pamphlet about the history of the tavern, I asked the waitress if they still sold the rum punch because I didn't see it on the menu. She said that they do and would check if they had any made. Even though she was super busy helping so many tables, she made a special trip to the basement to get my drink. I felt so sorry for her because then other patrons started asking me what this drink is that looked so good and they started asking for it as well! All in all, I would certainly recommend and will be going again when I'm back in town. Good food, friendly staff and many, many years of history in this place!
Chad A — Google review
What a little gem of American history. Gary did a fantastic job of bringing that history to life with his tour. The museum is set up for self-guided tours, but if there's a docent available, you'll have a much better experience - the stories are great! Pat in the gift shop was super friendly and helpful as well. A bargain at only $5!

Found this little park in the middle of the city, not knowing it had so much history. Took a wal around the fort and the canons were in amazing shape. Then I saw the history and how black slaves came here to fight for their freedom. It has a old cemetery , that they ask you to respect.

This is historic site and also a park, the headquarters building is a small museum. There are artifacts and interesting stories about the forts located around the DC area. This is the best preserved civil war era fort in the DC area. They have rebuilt one of the bastian's to the original specifications and armed it with period replica cannons. Admission and parking are free.

Biking Trails
The Mt Vernon Trail is an 18-mile scenic riverside pathway that links Theodore Roosevelt Island to George Washington's estate in Alexandria, Virginia. Starting at the peaceful Theodore Roosevelt Island, the trail offers diverse landscapes including swampy lowlands and dense woodlands as it leads to Mount Vernon. On the return journey, cyclists are treated to stunning views of Washington, DC's iconic skyline along the Potomac River.
Easy access from Crystal City hotels. You can loop over to the trail and back, as there are a couple of access points in the Reagan Airport area. Lots of shade and room for bikers and runners. Further north you get, the better the views you get of D.C. monuments.

So much fun we decided to take the Mount Vernon Trail from the Lincoln Memorial to Alexandria, Virginia. We rented E scooters and E bikes. The trail was near a highway for parked but once you get closer to Alexandria, it was off the highway and near the Potomac. Even near the airport

btw the wooden bridge (not pictured) is finally finished! nice, mostly shaded with trees, biking/walking trail. watch out, it can be pretty bumpy with cracks in the trail
Vanessa R — Google review
beautiful trail, albeit a little narrow considering the volume of runners, cyclists, and walkers who are on the trail
Matthew J — Google review
Jan 2024 update: Since my initial review, there is work underway on the trail south of Belle Haven Park: - the small bridge just south of the park has been replaced (pictured) - the long bridge at Dyke Marsh is being replaced (pictured) - the sections of the trail that collapsed just north of Northdown Road have been repaired Nice to see! Hopefully this work is a precursor to resurfacing the water and root-damaged sections! ----- The trail location itself is wonderful offering spectacular views of DC, monuments/memorials, and the Potomac River. However, as a cyclist I must sadly rate it a '3' due to its poor and deteriorating condition. Tree root intrusion, water damage, and rough/decaying wooden bridges are common throughout the trail. The section south of Belle Haven Park is especially bad with large potholes and areas where the trail has actually collapsed. If you have never ridden the trail, use extreme caution especially on the southern end. It would have been great if the NPS had received money from the infrastructure bill to rehabilitate the MVT, but sadly that does not appear to have happened. You realize how bad the MVT has become when you ride the W&OD. This is a precious resource sadly not maintained...
Dave — Google review
My all time favorite biking trail. You see boats, cars, metro and airplanes all all long this trail. Beautiful Potomac river is on your side and historic Mount Vernon at one end of this trail and downtown Washington at the other end👏

Awesome trail for cyclists, bicyclist, runners and dog walking. Beautiful scenery with mile markers to George Washington’s Mount Vernon Plantation. Rented bikes from Washington DC (Unlimited Bikes) and rode round trip. Definitely recommend E-Bikes with possible wind, chilly conditions and or kids. 18 miles each way. Going back was definitely easier but trail has a lot wooden bridges and bumps in the asphalt from tree roots. Took majority of our day plus visiting the plantation. Highly recommend but if you have kids can be extremely difficult. We rented a tandem and our 11 yr basically enjoyed the ride 😀 Halfway point in a cute town in Alexandria, Virginia with Unlimited Biking location there as well. You can also drop off your bike their if your struggling all the way back into DC.

Port City Brewing Company, located in Alexandria, VA, is the oldest packaging brewer in Washington D.C. The brewery offers a tasting room where visitors can enjoy housemade draft beers and take public tours from Thursday to Sunday. Throughout the year, the brewery hosts special events such as the Portside in Old Town Summer Festival and celebrates anniversaries with unique beer releases.
We had a great time visiting your nephew and his favorite brewery! It's always a good sign when a place manages to be both family-friendly and have great craft brews. We enjoyed the atmosphere and walked away with some great swag. Highly recommend you stop in for a beer.

Great little craft brewery in Alexandria. It's a little distance out of the Old Town area but well worth the trip. We stopped through the area while I was in town for a meeting. Really enjoyed the atmosphere there. They had some great craft brews and good eats from a local food truck.

If you’re searching for an amazing destination in the Alexandria, VA area, look no further! This place is a total gem, and I can't get enough of it—especially when the weather heats up! The energy in the air is absolutely contagious, and you can sip on some of the finest local craft beers around. It’s the perfect spot to kick back, relax, and revel in the vibrant atmosphere!

A great selection of beers in a nice clean taproom. You can drink near the production area which is cool. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. The bathrooms are clean and there is plenty of seating both inside and outside!

Port City is one of our favorite breweries in the area. They have a ton of options and are always releasing new beers. You will enjoy them if you particularly like german-style beers! I can't wait until they open a kitchen so there will be food on site too. There is always a ton of parking, they are very dog friendly, and they host so many fun events for the community! Would definitely recommend.

Nestled along the scenic Potomac River just south of Old Town Alexandria, Jones Point Park is a delightful blend of history and natural beauty. This park boasts an interpretive trail that invites visitors to delve into its rich past, including its significance during colonial times and as a shipyard in World War II. The highlight here is the historic lighthouse, Virginia's last remaining riverine beacon from 1855.
This is a really nice park. I have been here twice so far and both times I truly enjoyed walking around. I had no idea that all this was here, hidden underneath the Woodrow Wilson bridge and kinda just stumbled onto it the first time. I am so glad I did. There’s nice walking trails, a big open field, basketball courts, playgrounds, nice places to fish and even historical stuff like a big ship rudder DC Boundary Stones and an old lighthouse. Also despite being underneath the beltway it’s quite peaceful. I definitely recommend checking this place out.
Willku9000 — Google review
The park is beautiful and you can see the bridge and the river by stand here. However, it’s kind of boring if you not come with your friends or family, so called historical lighthouse is also not deserve to watch. Here’s a restroom and some basketball stands.

Great park under the WW Bridge and across from the National Harbour good for walking/jogging, picnics, fishing, even a little local American history to take in. The Virginia area was definitely more maintained vs the Maryland and DC areas (looked forgotten about). The lighthouse needs to be restored big time...this is a piece of our history that should be conserved.

Parking is limited. You have access to Old Time from there by walking about 1 mile. Beautiful sightseeings, nature, and history in one place. You can also access the ramp to cross the Woodrow Wilson Bridge by foot or bike towards Maryland. Restrooms available.

Parking area is temporarily closed seemingly due to construction. Bathrooms are locked. Bikes and pedestrians can access as usual.

Beautiful, mostly shaded park. Historic signs along the trail share the history of the area. There is a child's playground, restrooms, a water faucet that even has a low bowl for pups, a basketball area and plenty of parking. It's fun to see the land markers for Maryland, D.C. and Virginia as you walk through the park. Worth checking out if you're in the area.

The Freedom House Museum is one of the many historical sites in Alexandria, Virginia that tells the story of the city's past. It focuses on the harrowing history of slavery in antebellum times, particularly highlighting the experiences of those who were brought from the Chesapeake Bay area and forced into slave markets in the deep South. The museum is located at 1315 Duke Street, where chilling exhibits and screens broadcast personal stories to provide context for visitors to grapple with this atrocious institution.
This museum did such a great job honoring the lives and history of the enslaved people that went through Alexandria. It is a heavy topic, but absolutely worth learning about. I would definitely recommend this museum! The employees were very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. There's parking in the back. Bathrooms on every floor. Elevator to access the 2nd and 3rd floors. They have stations for visitors to share their thoughts and ideas. Oh and they have a discussion room with seating if you wanted to reflect on what you saw with others.
Danielle P — Google review
What an incredibly wonderful hidden gem. This museum highlights one of Alexandria historical stories about enslaved people. This museum was the site of a slave dealer company and the enslaved people were kept in the facilities in back including a large courtyard. The museum is self-guided but the employees there can provide a good introduction along with fantastic maps to illustrate the timeline of events. This is history we should never forget and we must pay respect and honor to those men, women, and children who suffered under slavery. I implore everyone to please visit this museum and learn something new. Spread the information. Support historical preservation. We must never forget.
Marcos A — Google review
This museum was really good. I’ve been to several and this is worth seeing. A lot of history in Alexandria VA especially as it pertains to 1k to 2k slaves being sold to the Deep South from this building a year in the 1800’s. Free if you live in Alexandria. A small cost if you don’t.
Stephanie H — Google review
An important local history museum highlighting the role of slavery in the past of Alexandria and the continuing struggle for full equality. Would have liked more details, artefacts and photos but still an interesting experience.
Sean H — Google review
We finally made it to the Freedom House Museum, a celebration of freedom and achievement located in a house that once auctioned enslaved people. The museum effectively conveys the tragedy of slavery while sharing the stories of those in bondage, then the progress made by African Americans (especially by Virginians). Few people understand the enormous size of domestic human trafficking that took place before the Civil War, and the Freedom House Museum corrects this. A few notes: -The folks working there are very knowledgeable & can add a lot to your experience. Talk to them! -There is free parking in the back of the building, and handicap parking in the front. -Inexpensive entry fee (we were glad to support the museum’s mission!). You’ll leave uplifted: please don’t miss out!
Snailkite V — Google review
Was closed when I visited Old Town but I plan to visit again. The African American Museum occupies what use to be the offices of Franklin and Armfield who were the biggest slaves traders in Alexandria. Armfield bought the slaves and then sent them to Franklin in Mississippi and Louisiana to be sold at a higher price. By the 1830s they were offen selling a 1000 slaves a year. This made them the largest slave-trading company in the US intill 1836. Addition - Normally costs about five dollars but it turned out, as a resident of Alexandria, I got in free! A lot of the exhibits dealt with slavery/African American history via first person experiences on top of general history. Also it helped that I had visited some of the sites mentioned and knew some of the stories already. Helped me put things together. There was also a art exhibit. Nice little museum. Before I left I bought two books - Uncommon Ground : Archaeology and Early African American, 1650-1800 and Alexandria's The Freedmen's Cemetery ; A Legacy of Freedom. So I ended up with a lot books when I got home.

Great information about Alexandria's history and role in the enslavement of Africans. I appreciate that Petersburg was highlighted in some exhibits. It's my hometown.
Sabrina D — Google review
The city of Alexandria is great at acknowledging it’s past with signs and monuments throughout town highlighting a very complex history. The recently re-opened Freedom House summarizes and brings to life Alexandria’s history with the trade of enslaved people. The first floor is focused on the past, the second is focused on more recent history such as BLM, and the top floor is focused less on history but on art. Worth a visit and plan on being there for at least 1.5 hrs.

The Alexandria Black History Museum is located in a significant 1940s building that played a role in the civil rights movement. The museum showcases the history of African Americans in Alexandria and Virginia, with a focus on their social, economic, and cultural contributions to the city since its establishment in 1749. Adjacent to the museum is the Watson Reading Room, which houses an extensive collection of books, periodicals, videos, and historical documents related to African American history.
We learned a lot visiting this old library turned into a museum. I believe it is free for Alexandria residents and $3 for non residents.

What an incredible hidden gem in Alexandria. I've lived here for 13 years and I just now learned about the museum thanks to my friend who grew up in the area. There is so much history surrounding us and I'm glad I got to learn more about the black history that makes Alexandria what it is today. History is often ugly and painful but it is part of who we are as a society and nobody has the right to erase it. So please go support this museum now more than ever considering the efforts of current leaders in DC to erase history.
Marcos A — Google review
Small, more localized history museum. $5 if a tourist to enter. Not as exciting and historical as the National African American History Museuem, but more local. Wish I could've seen more.

What a hidden gem! Well worth the cost of admission. A small museum, but we spent over an hour learning about Alexandria s black history. We then walked through the neighborhood, seeing some of the sites that were mentioned in the museum. If you have a little extra time, it's worth it!
Thomas Z — Google review
Small museum but a lot of information, changing exhibits and displays, even a little video. Friendly staff also. It focuses on Alexandria history and, having visited many of the other museums and historial sites, most of it was already known to me. But there was still alot of new stuff to learn.

Friendly and knowledgeable front desk staff, who encourage any question that a visitor might have. Two solid exhibits that are worth reading through, and it seems they have a lot of programming throughout the year that one could take advantage of.

It was a great experience, and the staff are great here. They have a thing when you walk in and you sit down to hear some information about black history or if you have any questions then they answer them. And they walk around with you to tell you about specific things that are in the museum. Learned a lot here!

Unfortunately, my visit to the Alexandria Black History Museum was not the greatest. -March 18, 2023 Based on visits to other local Black American Museums, the expectations were not met. The location was very small with limited items on display. There was no timeline of events reflective of those experiencing the hardships of being a Black American in Alexandria, Virginia. The use of terms like slavery or slaves was clearly absent from a majority of the displays and exhibit descriptions. Having to pay for a self-guided tour of a single room of displays and a short video presentation was quite disheartening. *The Howard County African American Culture Center in Columbia Maryland is similar in size, but was free of charge and was organized in a fashion to provide a clearer depiction of Black Americans during those time periods.

Christ Church Alexandria, an iconic Episcopal church completed in 1773, holds a significant place in American history. The stunning Georgian architecture and rich heritage make it one of the oldest churches in Virginia. Notable figures like George Washington and George W. Bush have attended services here. The church remains active, offering worship services and community outreach programs while preserving its historical significance for future generations to explore through tours available Monday to Saturday.
The church is super welcoming. The cemetery showed age but was kept clean in memory of the ones that lay to rest there. Overall a good little stop.

I mean the church is beautiful and have lot of history. But the guide tour is pretty short (10 minutes), since the church is pretty small. And here’s no other places you can visit except the gift shop (and the price of the staff in gift shop is pretty expensive). In sum, if you visit Alexandria, you may stop here by ten minutes, it’s really not necessary to drive from other places to here.

Beautiful church with so much history and interesting members from the years! Super sweet and knowledgeable guide that allowed us to sit in the Washington box pew and walked us through the renovation history, presidents that attended as well as the fun tip that Churchill also discovered the battle hymn of the republic here that was then played at his funeral. Neat adjoining cemetery. Nice of the British think that we Americans were almost immortal and gave us so much extra time. (Literally by losing the war and figurately with their tasteful defacing of headstones with their bayonets.)

Green Spring Gardens is a delightful destination for gardening enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The extensive grounds feature a historic house offering tours and tea, as well as garden shops, plant education, and a reference library. Visitors can meander through wooded valleys, by streams and ponds, taking in the fragrant native plants and exploring the tropical greenhouse. The gardens serve as a living classroom with hands-on horticultural learning courses for both kids and adults.
Well well, this review is long overdue! Last year we visited 'Green Spring Gardens' for the first time. Around the beginning of Spring on April 28, what a beautiful place to visit. It's a public park that includes a historic 18th century plantation house. Green Spring is in the heart of a national historic district listed on the National Register of Historic places in 2003. This garden is also part of Fairfax County's park system. It's beautiful, peaceful and the gardens are well maintained. There are plenty of shady spots around the walkway areas, ponds, a garden shop, a tea room in a historic house that includes a small gallery to exhibit local artists, a children's garden and herb & vegetable gardens. The staff are helpful and friendly, The more you see, the more you like. It's worth a visit this coming Spring!

We saw a heron by the pond and enjoyed looking at local art in some of the buildings. It is pet and kid friendly. Someone hid little gnome house in one area, and my young nephews enjoyed searching for them and making up stories about them. We came on a Sunday and parking off of braddock/witch hazel was plentiful and the suggested donation is $2 per car.

Farmers Markets
The Old Town Farmers' Market in Alexandria, Virginia, is a delightful Saturday tradition that dates back to 1753, making it the oldest continuously operating farmers market in the United States. Every Saturday morning throughout the year, this vibrant market comes alive on Market Square in front of City Hall.
Situated at 301 King Street, right in front of City Hall, the Old Town Alexandria Farmers' Market is a historic gem and a Saturday morning staple for those who live nearby. Open every Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to Noon, rain, shine, or snow, this is not just a farmers market; this is THE farmers market! Holding the title of the oldest farmers' market in the country held continuously at the same site, it offers a unique blend of history and community spirit. You can stroll through the same market that George Washington sold his produce from Mount Vernon and immerse yourself in a tradition that dates back centuries. From the moment you arrive, the market's lively atmosphere draws you in. With over 70 vendors during peak season, there's a dazzling array of offerings including fresh fruits and vegetables, hot prepared foods, cheeses, specialty sauces, freshly baked breads, pastries and much more. Some of my favorite and regular places that I visit at the market are Coulter farms (which provides high-quality dairy goods, beef, granolas and more from an Amish farm), Baked by Yael (which offers delectable bagels and treats that are perfect for a quick snack as you browse) and Hog Haven Farm which is a crowd favorite (their breakfast sandwiches are so good, there's often a line, but it moves quickly and is worth every minute of the wait). Also I can't forget about MB Bakery On The Go, located along the back side of the fountain, it has a lot of real estate showcasing their variety of baked goods and famous homemade pop-tarts. Chocotenango Chocolate is also great (chocolates handcrafted from bean to bar). Bigg Riggs Gourmet Farm brings some of the freshest fruits and vegetables, and Farm Kettle Corn is perfect for a sweet and / or savory, crunchy treat. If you're looking for something for the home head to Lily Shoppe which sells natural soap bars that are aromatic and sweet, you can browse them while snacking on an Maracas Ice Pop (all-natural fruit popsicles) from the corner. They are a refreshing and delicious way to help keep you cool on these hot DMV Saturdays. There are too many great places to list here but it's a overall a great opportunity to support local businesses all at once! Live musical performances also add to the festive ambiance, making the market experience even more enjoyable (these performances seem to rotate every week). With many public bike racks close to Market Square, it’s bike-friendly too—just remember to bring your own lock as bikes (as well as pets) aren't permitted on Market Square during market hours. The Old Town Alexandria Farmers' Market is more than a place to shop; it’s a place to connect with locals and local businesses, experience history, and enjoy the best local produce and artisanal goods the area has to offer. It’s an essential Saturday destination that promises a delightful experience for everyone. Whether you're a local or just visiting, this market is a must-visit if you are nearby!

This farmers' market is located in Old Town, Alexandria. It offers several fresh items, including vegetables, fruits, flowers, cheeses, honey, and baked goods. Walking from one stall to another can be an enjoyable experience as you can explore what each vendor offers and people at the market are friendly. The prices at the market may not necessarily be lower than those at a supermarket, but you support your local community by purchasing from them.

Jammed packed with great vendors. It’s a short walk around the square. You can easily create a favorite list of vendors. Delicious fruit, baked goods, great dairy products. I have much to explore. 🤙
Karinabel - — Google review
Extremely disappointed in my experience. The no dog policy is not well advertised online and signs are not easily visible at all entry points. I went for the first time with my small chihuahua and even though I was holding her I was approached by security and informed that vendors complained about my dog being present and that it posed a health risk. I have eaten at many fancy and elegant restaurant patios with my dog and have never heard of dogs being disallowed outside. I will not give business to this market. It was extremely crowded and disorganized anyway. I also saw a couple of cheese stands and was disappointed to see it was mostly prepackaged cheeses - not the experience I’ve had at other farmers markets. If I want prepackaged cheeses I’ll go to a grocery store.
Annie — Google review
Really disappointed to get here and learn they don't allow dogs. We moved from the Midwest to Maryland last year... Farmers markets were both much larger and more popular there and we loved taking our dog on cool mornings. He's well behaved and it's excellent enrichment for him as well as a great chance for us to support local farms and artisans. We really missed it, so we drove almost an hour to this market this morning only to be greeted by massive "Do Dogs Allowed" signs at every possible entrance. There were plenty of dogs loitering around the edges of the market, so it seems like we weren't the only ones surprised. It's really a shame for a dog-friendly city with one of the largest open-air DMV farmers markets to ban pets at that market.

Nestled at the intersection of Prince and Lee streets, the Athenaeum is a stunning example of Greek Revival architecture that adds a unique charm to Alexandria's historic landscape. Originally constructed in 1852 as a bank, this remarkable building has served various purposes over the years, including being a Union commissary headquarters and later a storage facility for an apothecary.
We hosted a 50 guest wedding ceremony and reception at the Athenaeum in September 2022 and had a wonderful experience! It is such a beautiful setting. We used the gorgeous back courtyard for our cocktail hour at sunset and it felt truly magical. The staff are wonderful to work with and it is in the heart of Old Town near hotels, shops and restaurants which is perfect if you have a lot of guests flying in like we did. The art adds a fun, modern element and we loved the artists featured the month of our wedding. We are so happy we chose the Athenaeum - highly recommend!

We always see a lot of broken glass in the rocks at different places we go. Did not see any here. We let our kids go barefoot and play. Parking was a pain due to the parking lots being closed because of the WUHAN Corona covid 19 virus. Or whatever its being called now.

There's a beautiful nature walk that is paved and in good condition, no real tripping hazards. If you stay on the paved path. We got to see a great blue heron. There's a nice pond and plenty of bullfrogs to listen to. We saw a turtle. Very enjoyable walk, nearly the entire walk is in the shade as well.

A very nice trail right in the heart of West Alexandria, near the Mark Center. You will feel like your in nature's own backyard with lots to see if you take your time and look around. Not too crowded but expect to run into others. To get a good hike in, cross over the trail on the other side of Beauregard Street. Enjoy!!!

Great Waves Waterpark, located in Alexandria's Cameron Run Regional Park, is a 20-acre attraction offering a variety of water-based activities. Visitors can enjoy waterslides, pools, mini-golf, and batting cages. The park features an enormous wave pool and thrilling water slides at the Reef. For younger kids, there are play pools with mini-slides and splash areas. Additionally, there is a climbing playground and sandbox for children to enjoy.
Visiting from out of state and I was so impressed with this little water park! Great slides and wave pool. A nice shallow pool for younger kids. Very few people there on a very hot June weekday, so almost no wait for water slides. A heads up though that no outside food or drink is allowed besides water bottles. (I didn’t see that on the website so we had to picnic before we went inside the park.) they let you come and go with your wristband on though.

Great Waves Waterpark is an absolute gem for families and friends looking for a fun day out! The water slides are thrilling, the wave pool is super fun, and the splash areas for kids are perfect for little ones. The park is clean, well-maintained, and the staff are friendly and attentive. I also appreciated the shaded areas and picnic spots for when we wanted to relax and enjoy snacks. It does get a bit crowded on weekends, but that's expected for such a popular spot. Definitely a must-visit during the summer!

The wave pool on a Thursday afternoon was very nice. Place is clean and there are a lot of life guards and plenty of seating. There are a couple of pools for the little ones along with a splash pad and slides for the bigger kids. Pizza was decent. There were dozens if not hundreds of summer camp kids if that matters.

Visited the waterpark today with my daughters. I was warned not to go by my brother but we went anyways. Nice place for the family. However, the issue is it's managed poorly. a DPR Summer Camp visited the park and left a horrible mess! I would not want to leave my children in the hands of these people. However, I along with several other people informed the manager of the park, working in the first-aid area, when we realized no one from DPR was returning to clean their mess, that someone needed to clean the area. She didn't do anything about it, even though she said she would. The workers in the sweets store didn't do anything about it either, they just sat on counters and talked and ignored our pleas. I started to clean the area myself but my daughters stopped me. The owners of this property should really evaluate its managers and workers. They are making a really nice place, trifling and nasty. I'd visit again if it was cleaner and better managed. Get new management! These are the only pictures I uploaded. I have more. DPR Summer Camps should be ashamed of themselves! Great Waves Water Park, you should have done much better!

My kids and I had a fantastic time at Great Waves park today. The park is very well kept, everything is in walking distance from each other and it was non stop fun. I wish they had a few more umbrellas out for families as the sun is a bit brutal out there. Food on site was good. Tasty fries and funnel cake was great as well. Dippin dots was a nice treat too. We will DEFINITELY be back! We got there at 1045. It is definitely better to get there early. Easypeasy parking and short line.
Noemi R — Google review
Really great place for kids! My 4 year old son LOVED it. Only downfall is the food and it’s prices . This would be a 5 star if you could bring your own food and if there a few more shaded areas.
Melyssa R — Google review
I had one of the most uncomfortable and disappointing experiences at Great Wave Water Park. First off, the shower, bathroom, and changing facilities were in a horrendous condition. The cleanliness was beyond unacceptable there was a dirty sanitary napkin left in the shower, tissue paper scattered across the changing room floor, and the benches were either stained with food or just filthy. The toilets? Absolutely disgusting. I felt extremely uncomfortable using any of the facilities, and it really ruined the start of my day there. But what made me furious was the complete lack of professionalism by the staff and management. The park was already closed, yet they continued to sell tickets knowingly, letting people in despite the fact that none of the water attractions were operating. Me and my family didn’t even get to step in the water. And when I asked for a refund after realizing the park was closed, the manager refused and instead tried to compensate with a voucher which I don’t plan using because I live out of state.A waste of my money and day off. I was shocked at how poorly everything was handled. I left feeling angry, disrespected, and completely let down by the service and cleanliness. I will definitely not be returning, and I would not recommend this place to anyone unless they seriously fix these issues.

The National Inventors Hall of Fame Museum is located in the atrium of the Patent and Trademark Office in Washington D.C. It tells the history of invention and features a collection of memorabilia from some of the most renowned inventors in history, including Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, and Nikola Tesla.
This is a fun museum, full of interesting information, games and gadgets. With 9-10 years old kids, we spent about 2 hours here and had a lot of fun. The cute souvenir shop is nice as well. And the best part - It is free!

We took our kids to the National Inventors Hall of Fame Museum in Alexandria, VA for a homeschool project and it was nothing short of amazing. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the museum is clean, organized, and easy to navigate. The exhibits are interactive and packed with information you won’t find anywhere else. Our children left inspired and full of new ideas perfect for homeschoolers and school field trips. Admission is free, which makes it even better for families and groups. The museum is open Monday–Friday 10 a.m.–4 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month 11 a.m.–3 p.m. (closed Sundays and federal holidays). There’s no on-site lot but plenty of paid parking nearby, including the USPTO East Garage and other garages around John Carlyle Street; we had no trouble finding a space. Use Google Maps to find exact directions and nearby parking options search “National Inventors Hall of Fame Museum” or open it in Maps for turn-by-turn directions and parking details. Plan for about an hour or two to see everything. If you’re bringing a group, call ahead to arrange a tour. We highly recommend this museum to anyone wanting their kids to experience the world of inventors in a hands-on, inspiring way.

This is a small FREE museum at the USPTO building near the Hoffman theater. All about inventions and patents and it was very interesting and inspiring. It is packed with info and we took a group of kids about K to 4th grade. Sometimes the bigger museums can be too much so this was just right. There was a tour and scavenger hunt and it was so great. Definitely call ahead before you go since we arranged our visit and I don’t know how that compares with a walk-in experience 😁

This hall of fame is a little, tiny area of the beautiful US Patent and Trademark Office Building. It is well stocked with some amazing exhibit that could easily be gone through in 30 minutes to an hour. There is some construction as they add on to this wonderful little place.

Nice little out of the way museum which is small but has a lot of information. Exhibits on black inventors, women inventors, how trademark works, and other displays. Family friendly and kids would enjoy most of it. They would love the tiny robotic cars. That didn't seem to follow the marker line I made. Oh well. Had a nice gift shops with a good selection. The African American Heritage Memorial Park boasts a meticulously groomed setting and a wetland area, showcasing memorial sculptures, a historic cemetery, and walking paths. At the heart of the park lies 'Truths That Rise From the Roots Remembered,' an exquisite sculpture group featuring bronze trees. Preserving the original landscape of the 19th-century African American cemetery, this park harmoniously blends with its surroundings while safeguarding diverse plant life.
The bottom levels are very very informative on the history of slavery and black culture. It’s important information, and is really eye-opening to the injustices of slavery. (We did these floors on the same day we did the holocaust… not recommended 😅. Go to the botanic gardens after because you will need some healing after learning about all those atrocities.) We did the top levels the next day- oh.my. GOSH. If you listen to lots of rock n’ roll and old jazz and soul like I do, or if you watch sports like I do, this place is a GOLD MINE. REAL ARTIFACTS. Like you walk in and CHUCK BERRY’S 1972 Cadillac is right there! The Memorabilia here is CRAZY, including Billie Holiday’s dress, Whitney Houston’s dress, Willie May’s jersey, and so much more. So much history and information to take in. There’s so much to see. I absolutely loved those exhibits. I can’t believe I almost forgot… the food is INCREDIBLE. The best fried chicken I’ve ever had,, maybe even the best chicken I’ve ever had in general. There’s a huge selection of great food, I personally loved the fried chicken, sweet potato w/butter, and green beans. It was so good we ate there both days. Would highly recommend this place, 5 stars. Take a couple of days to see everything here.

I was riding through Alexandria looking for something interesting to do when I saw a sign for the Alexandria African American Heritage Park. I have never heard of it, so I stopped. So glad I did! It was a quaint, quiet little Park with beautiful sculptures, grassland, Marsh, and a walking path that crosses a bridge over the marsh. It was very peaceful so I spent my afternoon there walking the lands, reading the remaining headstones from what appears to have been an African American cemetery, and admiring the sculptures.

The Alexandria African American Heritage Park. It started out as a Black Bapist Cemetery which was forgotten, abandoned, and turned into a landfill. It was rediscovered in late 20th Century and it became a memorial site. From what I understand they are still researching who was buried here and many of those who buried here are unknwon.

This one museum had a very significant impact on my view of history. We take so many things for granted, but in this place you get to see how very hard it was for your people to do just basic simple things, like read for free in a public library. The exhibit was beautiful and honest without leaving you in despair. You leave with a renewed desire to make a strong impact with the things we all take for granted. Watch the video, it tells the story beautifully.

Gadsby's Tavern is a historic American eatery that was frequented by notable figures like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams. The establishment, which has been in operation since 1770, offers a unique dining experience in colonial-style rooms. Visitors can dine by candlelight and savor menu items such as Peanut Soup, Hot Smithfield Ham Biscuits, Gentlemans Pye, and Georges Favorite.
If you're looking for a historic authentic experience, this place is a must. The outside of the red brick building caught our attention, and we decided to try. Inside, there was the Colonial charm. We sat down in one of the side rooms. Our waiter was quick and attentive. I had the prime rib with mashed potatoes, and my wife had lamb chops. The food was delicious. As it started getting darker outside, there was a warm, dark ambiance to the room. It felt like stepping back in time. The place is a must if you're visiting Alexandria, a place that exceeded our expectations and will leave a lasting impression on us.

Fantastic food in a cool environment, service was slow, waitress could have been friendlier, you don’t really get any information about the history, at least not at the time we went. Took way too long to get service between courses and upon completing. Also it’s quite humid and warm on a summer day. Definitely worth it for the food and historical value, though the prices are a bit high. Peanut soup is fine, clam chowder is solid, George Washington’s favorite is fantastic.

I was at the little theater of Alexandria last evening to see the play "Lost in Yonkers". The first Act was slow moving for me until the end of the first act. Have been going to Little Theatre for years. It’s a small venue so every seat is great. They’ve followed Covid protocols in such a good way-they used cardboard cutouts between sets of seats so the theater felt full but no one was sitting next to or right by you. We had “cats” behind us! It’s a comfortable space. The caliber of the performances is terrific. This is community theater and the acting, sets, directing, etc are always very very good. It’s excellent value for dollar. The Alexandria History Museum at the Lyceum, established in 1839, offers a comprehensive look into the city's history from Colonial times to the 20th century. It is part of a network of museums and historic sites that collectively narrate Alexandria's story. The museum was founded as a scholarly society by Benjamin Hallowell and also housed facilities for the Alexandria Library Company. Additionally, it played a role in urban archaeology to uncover artifacts preserving the city's heritage.

A regional museum that informs the visitor of Alexandria's complex history. I like the way it tracks the rise of the town until the devastation of the American Civil War, and then the struggle to find relevance then after. The physical development of the town is explained. Special exhibitions are good (March 2019): Alexandria and WW1; and a display of clothing items from the 19th century. The building, respectfully restored, is a fine example of early architecture in the town. Well worth a visit.

Jones Point Lighthouse, a storied structure dating back to 1855, stands on the banks of the Potomac River in a charming park setting. It is the only remaining riverine lighthouse in Virginia and offers a romantic backdrop for couples. Visitors can rent bikes and explore the area, which also features restaurants, bars, fishing piers, and recreational facilities. The one-story building served as a signal for ships navigating the river and provides insight into the region's shipping history.
Cool piece of history and great public park. Original land owned & used for tobacco agriculture by early suffragette Margaret Brent, whom was granted land patent in 1654. Best part, the original District of Colombia southern boundary marker and stones marking the boarders. Great place for a walk or time with your family.

It's a nice location but the lighthouse is not your typical lighthouse. It's just a small building with the light attached to the top of it. It's also in very bad condition and not open to the public. The walk from the free parking lot is short and depending on the path you take, you get some amazing views of the water.

BARCA Pier & Wine Bar offers a breezy Mediterranean dining experience with outdoor riverfront seating, providing a perfect setting to enjoy tapas and wine. Located on an Old Town commercial pier along the Potomac River, the restaurant's seafood-centered menu is rooted in Catalonian and Mediterranean cuisine. The industrial freight container serving as the main bar adds to its unique charm.
First off, let me highlight the views from the pier and all around because they’re FANTASTIC! Next, our server Blake was a true rockstar and didn’t skip a beat. Last but certainly not least, the food (small plates) all excellent from the meatballs, scallops, flank steak, Ahi tuna and the hummus. Not one disappointed. Great place and great food!

Found out that this was a great place to watch the sunset. There were many tapas dishes to try. We tried the lamb chops, scallops, stuffed peppers, and a shrimp dish. Everything was delicious. Drinks were great as well! Our server was pleasant and attentive. Definitely recommend for a nice day or evening on the water.

Perfect place for drinks and food with family. I loved everything the minute I walked up to the host stand, she was very friendly and sat us down right away. Our waiter and the waiter in training were both super knowledgeable about the food and recommended us what drinks & plates to order. Everything was very tasty & delicious. I can’t wait to go back! We did get there by boat & by the time of our reservation 12:45pm- there was only one more space on the dock directly to the restaurant but there’s plenty more space on the other side!

The food was phenomenal.. It came out quickly, was very flavorful and I enjoyed everything we ordered. However, note that it is tapas style, so small portions, making it a bit pricier. We ordered the lamb, steak, shrimp, beef kebab and calamari and they were all very very tasty with the steak, lamb, and beef being my faves in that order. Also the ambiance being on the water was really nice. Would definitely recommend

Had a drink, an appetizer, and a tapa here for the first time, sitting outside in their waterfront section of their restaurant. It was a great setting on a nice fall day. Drinks and food came quickly. Watching boats and planes go bye along with the people watching and good conversation made for a pleasant afternoon. What's more, the prices are reasonable for Old Town Alexandria. We'll be back.

This place has seating along the river and while it was a cooler day with overcast they have heaters to keep you warm. Gabi was amazing. She gave great suggestions and was very attentive to us. We enjoyed all our tapas and drinks. The per person will be based on how many tapas you order. There were three of us and we split five plates and one dessert.
Nicole T — Google review
Old Town Alexandria has been my home for 14 years. One of the most impressive developments during that time has been the upgrading of the waterfront abutting the Torpedo Factory, along Union Street and radiating to the north and south points of King Street. Walking from Jones Point Park to the waterfront near where the Potomac Water Taxi docks, you can take in the stunning view of where the Woodrow Wilson Bridge anchors in the Potomac River. BARCA Pier and Wine Bar captures the river, the bridge, and the waterfront with grace and style. While its pier closes during the coldest winter weeks, four-foot ceiling-mounted heaters do a splendid job of keeping the counter and seats warm at this open-air bar. I’ve found the service to be personable, polite, and helpful. I’ve also found their mixed drink specials to be intriguing (see, e.g., Makers Mark on tap in a Red Light, with bourbon, Aperol, strawberry infused Spanish vermouth, $15) and tasty (see, e.g., the Sol y Sombra, made with Beefeater gin, St. Elder, cherry bitters, lemon, $13). Crazy busy during the summer, I make a point to visit over the weekends in the late fall, when the temperatures drop below 40o F and the heaters are at full power. A double Beefeater’s with tonic, ($20) offers just the right amount of warmth to complement a brisk walk along the riverside.

If you’re looking for a church home that feels like family and nurtures your spiritual growth, we wholeheartedly recommend this congregation. All are welcome!

If you are a Daughter or Son of the American Revolution (as I am) you will find here the tomb of the unknown revolutionary war soldier and others. What a historic gem!
Diana S — Google review
Established in 1772 the building was Georgian style but was gutted by a fire in 1835 but was rebuilt using the same eighteenth century architectural elements. I came to the Meeting House to visit the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary Soldier. Well kept and lovely churchyard. Lots of history on this plot of land.

Very welcoming congregation in a beautiful and historic church. This church does a tremendous amount for local and distant communities. This mighty group is incredibly active; there’s something for every one to feel connected.

Wonderful and historic church founded in 1772; a fantastic and welcoming community! Churchyard features the tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the revolutionary war, and the grave of George Washington’s personal physician. An architecturally beautiful and inclusive piece of Alexandria history.
Nelson M — Google review
OPMH has a beautiful and historic building (fun fact, it once burned down on a Sunday) but what we love about it is the welcoming community. We especially like the low key 8:30 service, which is a bit more casual, with piano instead of the organ and just us folks singing. The 11 am service is perfect if you're looking for a more traditional service, but we like the informality and warmth of the early one.
Ernest L — Google review
Absolutely stunning music and a very talented music director, although he and his also very talented soprano wife leaving (sigh) for life reasons.. BUT the organ is a good instrument which should provide many more good concerts in the right hands. Also important: this is a congregation that is radically welcoming, genuinely so. A beautiful building, a bit threadbare in spots needing your community support!

Handel’s Messiah at the Old Presbyterian Meeting House was a delight! Thanks to the artists who sang and played the music and to the talented director Steven Seigart. If you missed it this year plan to be there next year for this new tradition. It stirred my testimony of Jesus Christ and increased my knowledge of Him. My new favorite stanza: Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, thy King cometh unto thee; He is the righteous Saviour, and He shall speak peace unto the heathen. (Zechariah 9:9-10) it was a pleasure to hear and see Suzanne Karpov Seigert sing this message of love to all women.

Nestled in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, the Lee-Fendall House Museum & Garden is a captivating historical gem that transports visitors back to the mid-19th century. Originally built in 1785, this charming wood-frame residence has been home to numerous generations of the prominent Lee family and even served as a refuge for Union soldiers during the Civil War. The house's rich history includes notable figures like labor leader John L.
We had our wedding ceremony in the garden at the Lee-Fendall House and it was perfect! The garden is truly magical in May when we got married and we just had the best experience. Staff was so great to work with and we love the wedding photos from our day. Would recommend to anyone looking for a beautiful outdoor venue.

Excellent, quite knowledgeable staff. No wait. Interesting history between the Lee and Fendall families. Beautiful garden. Make sure to get the "Key to the City" pass at the visitor center to get free or reduced admission to several museums.

Although they had an event planned on the same day of our visit they still welcomed us in and gave us an amazing tour. Some things weren't in their original place and the tour was rushed due to the event. However, the place is great and definitely worth a visit

I really enjoyed the tour and seeing some history of Alexandria. Robert E. Lee's boyhood home is just across the street. George Washington and Woodrow Wilson were guests at the Lee-Fendall House. You get to go through time as you tour the different rooms and get a sense of how things changed throughout history. Would definitely recommend. It does cost $5 but I think it's worth it.

Old Town Alexandria Waterfront is a charming riverside promenade with an array of bars, restaurants, and ice cream parlors. The historic Old Town Theatre, though no longer hosting performances, remains a beloved landmark in the city. Strolling along the waterfront at sunset offers stunning views of National Harbor across the water. The bustling streets feature shopping, dining options, cobblestone streets, and 18th and 19th century architecture.
Dynamic downtown with copious amounts of bars, restaurants, coffee shops and the like. If you need to take a breather to decompress, take a walk along the waterfront, where there are calming seas, ample greenery, and beautiful brick dwellings to add to the ambiance. All in all, a fantastic place for a stroll.

Great waterfront area with lots of cafes & bars. During the day it’s a quiet area for a walk but it really comes a live at night. If you have kids there’s some great ice cream places in Kings street just before you come to the waterfront area. The night I was there, a local boat club was out sailing and when the sun went down there were two very talented guys singing in the little park area with the Astro turf.

I always love this area. I always tell myself if I ever move back to the area I'm going to live in old town. Unfortunately the waterfront is currently flooded thanks to hurricane Erin 8/2025. But all the restaurants and bars not flooded seem to be open! I'm going to have to come back and shop during daylight hours

Virtue Feed & Grain is a trendy tavern located in an 18th-century granary along the waterfront of Union Street. The restaurant offers modern tavern cuisine in a stylish setting with exposed wooden beams and brick walls. The menu features a variety of dishes, from familiar favorites like crab dip and calamari to more adventurous fare such as wild boar chops and umami burgers.
Came here for a date night and had a great time. The restaurant is in a great location in old town Alexandria, VA. There is street parking as well as garages near. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. We sat indoors upstairs at a table by the windows. It was a nice comfortable feel. We had a nice view of the park/water area below. The atmosphere in the restaurant was lively and the service was good. Our food and drinks came out quickly and everything was fresh and tasty. Also we came for an anniversary and the restaurant gave us a complimentary drink on them. That was unexpected but appreciated. There was plenty of options for food and drinks everyone can find something here. Overall id definitely recommend checking this spot out. Its definitely one we will come back to.

We had the yummy drink special of the week and Clay (our server and new friend) knew more about bourbon selections -than the 6 of us will ever forget. The service - from initially taking drink and appetizer orders through dinner and after dinner drinks- was exemplary!! There seemed to be a team of bar, food and cooking staff that worked together as a family!! Highly recommend: drink special - you won’t go wrong -appetizer - brussel sprouts; crab dip Meal: Rockfish 😋🥳 Short ribs 😳😋 Three of us were HUGE @bartalk vans - after a private AMAZING Bourbon tasting!!! Hello, good morning, and thank you for taking the time to read. Today we visited Virtue Feed & Grain for my husband's birthday. We ordered- brunch muffins, crab dip, shrimp and crab chowder, chilaquiles with pork barbacoa, and a breakfast burrito with turkey sausage. Everything was just fantastic! I do wish they served the crab dip with their homemade tortilla chips but that's not even a thing. The atmosphere, the service, the food. All so good. They surprised my husband with a bowl of vanilla ice cream with hand whipped whipped cream that was so rich and creamy! Absolutely perfect. My new favorite place in Alexandria.

Located in the charming Old Town Alexandria, Virtue Feed and Grain offers a delightful dining experience that captures the essence of the area. The atmosphere is wonderful, we sat outside on a gorgeous August evening. It’s the kind of place where you can easily settle in and enjoy a long, leisurely meal. The drink selection is impressive, featuring a variety of creative cocktails and a well-curated wine list. Each sip was enjoyable, and the drinks complemented the meal nicely. While the ambiance and drinks set a high bar, the food, unfortunately, didn’t quite reach the same level of excellence. Some dishes were flavorful but could have benefited from a bit more refinement. There were moments where the flavors didn’t fully come together, which was a bit disappointing given the overall quality of the restaurant. Despite this, the overall experience was enjoyable, and I appreciate the effort put into the atmosphere and drink offerings. I look forward to returning to Virtue Feed and Grain to see how they continue to evolve their menu. It’s definitely worth a visit for the delightful setting and good drinks!

Fantastic spot that gives off local vibes. We were able to get to the bar quickly but don't expect that to be the norm. Great food selection and the bourbon list is lengthy and well curated. Rotating cocktails keep things interesting and fresh.

We had an excellent dining experience at the upstairs bar with Mac. She was extremely knowledgeable on all of the bourbons, cocktails, and menu. She made us several delicious cocktails, and we tried many different bourbons. The brussels sprouts and scotch eggs are a must try. I think my favorite thing that we had was the scallop and shrimp chowder, I believe it was a special, but it was absolutely outstanding!

Great meal! The food (steak and fries) was great. I ordered it medium rare and it was red in the middle. I like that, but others may not. The green sauce is chimichurri people… don’t freak out. The drinks were delectable (whiskey and beer). The location and atmosphere are on point. Emma was a great server, much appreciated! Definitely recommend. Vermilion, located in Old Town, Alexandria, is a trendy spot known for its fresh New American fare and wine pairings. The restaurant sources ingredients from local farms in Virginia and neighboring mid-Atlantic states, offering a farm-to-table dining experience. With a formal dining room showcasing a three-course tasting menu and fancy bar bites like catfish sliders and arancini downstairs, Vermilion provides a diverse culinary experience.
Delicious food, casual relaxed atmosphere, implacable service. It was our first time here, we opted for their prefix menu, they call it “farm-to-table menu” I think. There was a nice mix of appetizers, a reasonably sized entree and a few other amuse-bouche bites. Every dish has an interesting, yet excellent twist, with a good mix of complimentary flavors and textures. Like figs & blue cheese, fried oysters and anchovies, etc. The short rib entrée was delicious, complimented with roasted peanuts and perfectly charred, slightly crunchy broccoli rabe. It’s a bit useless to share specific items we had, since menu is seasonal and ever changing, but I will add pictures.

I enjoyed a nice dinner at Vermilion after traveling for 12 hours due to weather delays. Im not sure if it is my extreme hunger or my love of unique restaurants, but I definitely enjoyed my dinner here. I had the New Frontier Bison Flank Steak and enjoyed every bite. The unique combo of red sauce with beans accompanied by medium rare bison and some small slices of goat cheese were an enjoyable experience. The gentleman behind the bar was a retired Marine and complete professional. I thoroughly enjoyed my time and I believe that you will too.

Bad experience. Although they admitted their mistake by not charging us for the burgers they'd forgotten to include in our order. It took 50 minutes for them to arrive at our table. The food was good. Apple cider donuts and the aforementioned burgers.
Willy R — Google review
Vermilion is an excellent date night spot with excellent food and service! My husband and I had dinner here for the first time and were seated upstairs. It was dimly lit for intimacy and charming Edison lights strewn about the ceiling made the dining area feel dreamy. Our server, Evelyn, was exemplary with describing the menu, the restaurant, and with her service - she was so kind! Everything was delicious and plated so beautifully. I was so happy to see they had a mocktail section and enjoyed a 'Persephone's Return', a bubbly drink with pomegranate syrup. My husband got the crispy oysters and I got Bettie's buns to start. The buns were SO soft, and the flaked salt on top contrasted incredibly with the whipped sorghum butter. Our main courses were equally impressive. The goat cheese cappellacci was al dente and delicious - the cheese was bright and "goaty", the squash so cute, and the pomodoro sauce was so good I scraped the plate! My husband loved his short rib and commented how tender it was. We split a strawberry rhubarb buckle; it was not too sweet at all, the lemon verbena was nice and sharp to contrast the sweet oat streusel. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and look forward to future dates at Vermilion!

The Birchmere is a barnlike music performance space with a supper club-style main hall and a bandstand area. It's known for hosting legendary country and bluegrass performers in an intimate setting where audience members can get up close to their favorite artists. The venue offers shared tables where patrons can enjoy sandwiches, burgers, and pitchers of beer while watching the show.
A great intimate venue. They do serve food that is good and reasonably priced. A couple of points to note. The doors open at 5:00 for a 7:30 show. At 5:00 when the doors the box office gives you a number. At 6:00, they will start calling the numbers in order from 1. When your number is called you show your tickets and are allowed into the seating area. Once in, you may sit at any open seats. This is when you may order food. Because of the use of issuing numbers, folks arrive early and line up outside. If you want to sit up close to the stage, arriving as early as possible and getting in line is necessary. We got there by 4. Also of note, only electronic tickets from Ticketmaster are accepted. Screen shots will not work. Finally, it is a large parking lot but does fill up. A number of folks did use ride shares but the rideshare drivers have to enter when the majority of traffic is going the other way. Definitely a great intimate venue but best to know what to expect.
Alan B — Google review
It's a good venue to see a show, but you need to be aware of how the seating works. 1st, when you get there, they give you a ticket with a number, then near show time, we will start calling the numbers in order over the loud speaker. That's how you enter, but from there, it's still general admission, so once inside, it's a mad rush to your choice of table/seats. It's kind of crazy. While waiting for them to call the numbers, there is a large area with a full bar. Once seated, you can order more drinks, and they have a full menu. We found the food to be ok, kind of tasteless, really. I asked my waitress about the fish and chips, but she said they were a hit or miss and try to steer people away, so I got the chicken tenders. This was our second time here. We enjoy the venue, they seem to get a good line up. Music sounds good. Only real issue is since you are sitting at long tables, you may have to look over your shoulder to see the stage or even have to turn your chair around. Some people also talk quite a bit during the show. We've enjoyed ourselves both times, even with the little annoyances. Staff is friendly and pretty prompt. No glasses of water only purchased bottles.
Anthony C — Google review
Went to the Birchmere for the Colin Hay show. It was my second time going with the last being for The Church's Starfish anniversary tour back in 2019. I regret the fact that I haven't been back sooner because this place really is a great little venue. It is general admission with seating and tables on a first come, first serve basis, but the venue is small enough as to where any seat is a good seat. Overall there is something very ethereal and uncanny about the venue as well. It really gives me Bang Bang Bar vibes, even though it is miles away from that little town that is 5 miles south of the Canadian Border and 12 miles west of the state line. I highly recommend going to a show here.

This is a nice concert venue. They regularly have great music perfomers, and you're able to see them in a more intimate setting rather than at a large auditorium or arena. The venue sells food and drinks that you can consume during the show. They also have a gift shop if you're interested in getting a souvenir. I recently saw the Ohio Players perform there, and it was a good show. We were able to park on site for free.
Sharon K — Google review
The Birchmere is one of my favorite venues. It's the appropriate size and space to feel like everyone has a good seat. The acoustics is good. The food is also pretty good.
Jim L — Google review
I've never attended a concert in a venue like this before. It was basically a restaurant that also had a stage. We only ordered appetizers but they were pretty decent. The prices are high so I'd look at the menu before going if you were interested in dining there. The sound system in there was good and Blackmore's Night sounded amazing! They also have a ticket system to enter so the order you arrive and get your ticket, is the order that you get to enter the dining room and pick a seat. So it's best to get there early to get in the queue to get a good seat.

There’s a shop for kids to get light up toys as well. The skating was a ton of fun especially at night around the lights. Tickets include skate rentals. It is real ice. Was not crowded at all when we went. If you’re not good at skating no problem they have little walkers to push around and little kids can sit and ride them. Staff is very friendly and they watch over the ice for people who fall. I brought my 6 and 9 year old we had a great time

My job held a fun day here. Many of us didn't know there was a water park in the DMV city area. It's not a huge park, but it's large enough to escape the heat. The slides are okay. We did then to get wet...the orange side gave us a welcome surprise. 😀 It is geared towards elementary aged and younger, but as an adult, I was able to have a good time. Not my first choice, but i if we do another fun day...I will be there. I can see business growing with the close of Six Flags over Largo.

The Friendship Firehouse Museum is a historic firehouse in Alexandria that displays historic firefighting gear dating back to the 1700s. The museum is especially popular with kids, who believe local legend has it that George Washington helped found the volunteer fire company and even paid for its construction.
I had the pleasure of visiting during their recent 250th Anniversary celebration in Old Town Alexandria. I’ve always walked past it and now I finally got a chance to come in. There was a very educational docent discussing the history of the Friendship Firehouse Museum as well as cool artifacts. I didn’t get a chance to go upstairs but I look forward to coming back to explore more. The highlight (for me besides seeing the old fire “truck” inside was that the volunteers were hosting a little kids station in the alley next to it. Kids could hold a small hose to put out fires on a wooden house - a very cool activity if I had small children. One young child was very small indeed that the hose got the best of him and what transpired next was a scene straight out of a Tom & Jerry cartoon where the kid tripped and the hose started flailing about and spraying everyone in line - kids, parents, and bystanders! Kids were laughing, adults were thankful for a cool refresher in the 99 degree weather, and the volunteers jumped into action and took control of the hose. Everyone was laughing so I hope the kid was ok and that memory will stick with me for awhile of the Friendship Firehouse. Hopefully their next big anniversary is just as fun!

I stopped by the museum during a weekend trip to Alexandria. Unfortunately, it was while they were closed for some renovations. However, I did enjoy seeing the historic station from the exterior and reading the interpretive signs. It's a great, and unique, historic site. I hope to return once they are finished with renovations and reopen.

Small museum open once a month. Alexandria residents can enter freely otherwise they ask for a couple of dollars. Two floors, lots of interesting items and lots of information. Tiny gift shop and a public restroom.
Michael V — Google review
A pleasant little museum with some cool artifacts from the history of the place as a firehouse and general civic organization. It takes about 10 minutes to go through everything, so the collection is small, though it is unique as well. I'd give them another star if they were ever actually open. I just happened to catch them during a festival, or I still wouldn't have seen them despite living in the neighborhood for months.

This museum is not open every Saturday like Google Maps says. It's only open one Saturday every month. Their website lists specific opening dates. Inside the museum there are two pieces of fire fighting apparatus and a few other tools. The volunteer guide has limited knowledge but could pass your question to a local historian if needed.

The hose transport was just returned after 2 years of being refurbished. An amazing skill set by a true trade craftsman. Check out the hand pump before it starts to get refurbished by the same craftsman.

The Contrabands and Freedmen Cemetery Memorial is a poignant tribute to the struggles of those who fought for freedom from slavery. This serene site features a striking statue, 'The Path of Thorns and Roses,' symbolizing the arduous journey toward liberation. Visitors can explore the rich history encapsulated within its grounds, which are part of a broader narrative that includes various cultural landmarks in Alexandria. The cemetery is well-maintained, though some grave markers show signs of nature reclaiming them.
Last year my wife and I were walking the new bridge. We arrived at the Virginia side of it to see this historic monument. To my surprise I saw a man walking his dog in the cemetery. He allowed it to poop there. I asked him if it was okay that I poop on your anscestors graves? He got mad. Virginia allows whites and others to disrespect this monument by allowing their dogs to poop on it.

It’s beautiful place and I’m so thankful that something like this preserved for the public to learn about. African-American history is American history and it’s wonderful to honor the slaves and freedmen that built this city and country.
Brittany C — Google review
When the Civil War started and the Union took Alexandria many escaped slaves, called Contraband, poured into the city to escape their former masters. This overcrowding caused a high mortality rate. The soldiers seized a undeveloped plot of land and turned it into a cemetery. More than 1,700 Freedmen and Contrabands were buried here, Of course it was forgotten, built on, and many of the graves were destroyed. Rediscovered in 1996 it is now a monunment, From what I understand about 500 graves still exist and many of the markers on the ground had only 'Grave Of An Adult' on it. BUT the lists of names suggest more knowledge of who was buried. Mostly because many of their descendants were found. Oh, is that crow or a raven?
Michael V — Google review
Very sobering experience. The monument is an excellent tribute. Tickets not necessary.

On a random walk noticed the Freedmans cemetary. It's an amazing piece of history and culture. Very happy that we saw this place. It's small but the history and reflection provided is worth a visit. They also have a listing of the people buried there and and nice little fact on if their descendants have been found.

Nestled in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, Captains Row is a charming stretch on the 100 block of Prince Street where history and beauty converge. This picturesque cobblestone lane features stunning Federal-style row houses, each boasting vibrant doors and classic gas lamps that illuminate the brick sidewalks. As you wander along this enchanting street, you'll feel transported back to the 18th century, with its uneven surfaces telling tales of yesteryear.
Good place with decent Halloween decors this year.

If you're seeking a unique way to dive into history, look no further than the Tall Ship Providence, an impressive reproduction of the first vessel authorized for service in the Continental Navy under Captain John Paul Jones. This magnificent ship is docked at Old Town Alexandria's waterfront and serves as an open-air museum where visitors can embark on dockside tours or enjoy scenic cruises along the Potomac River. The Providence offers a variety of experiences, including daily cruises and themed excursions that cater to diverse interests.
Ahoy matey! What an enjoyable experience during our Potomac River cruise on the Tall Ship Providence this afternoon! First, there's parking available nearby for about $20/day and just a minute walk from the ship. Restrooms are available on the dock and they were clean. There's a dock bar with plenty of seats as well. The boat has a bar and restroom, although we didn't use either I saw other guests using them so I assumed they're perfectly fine. We had tickets purchased in advance and arrived about 30 minutes before the sail. The crew were fantastic. Polite, professional and provided an educational opportunity within a casual, fun environment while keeping safety a priority. Each member we interacted with was kind and wanted to talk with us, not once did we feel uncomfortable or a burden. Additionally, we enjoyed chatting with other guests throughout the excursion. Phil, who led our historical tours, is amazing. He was full of knowledge and appreciated questions. Phil explained the real ship's history, the replica's journey, the historical crew's days working on board, and many enjoyable facts. We left with a genuine appreciation for the ship. The sail adventure was about 2 hours. At times we felt the motion from another boat's wake however it was never especially choppy. Those who get motion sickness easily may want to take something ahead of time to avoid feeling ill, however I was able to breathe through my sickness without getting too ill. If you're interested in history while seeking a different adventure, definitely check out the Tall Ship Providence! You'll feel safe, learn a lot and have a sincerely pleasant experience. PS: If you enjoyed your adventure don't forget to tip the crew to show appreciation, we happily did via the QR code! Thank you to the Captain and entire crew for such a great adventure on the Potomac!

The pier bar has a floating rock, nice music and a relaxed vibe. Didn’t even tour the ship which is quite small. Totally recommend the bar! Great view of the river as well with the capital in the distance
Louise M — Google review
The ship is beautiful and the trip is funny. But is really not deserve 55$, spend two hours on the river, here’s no enough seats and shade place, explore under the sunshine almost two hours. Is not have many “history” about this ship can share with you, but the crew is super nice and professional, they will let you explore the tail and lower level of the ship. The restroom on the ship is broke, so make sure you use the restroom before you boarding. However, I still not recommend you pay for this if you want a fun, quick tour on the river, maybe water taxi is a better choice.

Oh my! Last Sunday, my family took a ride on Tallship Providence! It was my son‘s sixth birthday and he wanted to do something different. We had such a lovely time! The crew was accommodating and kind and full of information. I would definitely recommend us if you’re down in the old town area and want to try something different. They serve snacks and drinkson the boat. No restrooms provided on board.

Wonderful experience on a tour of this replica of a ship that fought in the Revolutionary War in the 1770s. Friendly crew in a most scenic setting. The bar at the pier is great too. The servers are actually also the tour guides.

The crew was fun and informative. It was interesting to watch them work the lines and sail under wind power. Cruise was about 2 hours on the Potamac. There was a cash bar on the ship, and parking nearby was easy to find. Great experience; would definitely recommend it if you're in the area.

Wonderful experience sailing on a sunset tour with The Providence on 7/22/2023. Beautiful evening on the Potomac River. Passionate and experienced crew made the sunset cruise a fun adventure. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys history and being on the water in this gorgeous location where it’s easy to spot the Capitol and Washington Monuments from the water. Dining and shopping options are endless and The Providence is conveniently located at the docs close to parking (but arrive early to secure a spot since the lots full up quickly on weekends.) Support The Providence through your patronage and also donations. A great evening that will not disappoint! The people love their ship, and want you to have a memorable time. Lastly, a special thank you to Caroline, the Captain, and entire crew. We will come back soon.
Theresa C — Google review
Tickets run for $50 for adults and $40 for kids. Captain and crew were awesome! Set sail down the Potomac and back again, asking as many historical questions as your heart desires. It is a modernized version of the original so a small motor may move you before they let loose the sails. Don't worry - there is no plank to be forced on and plenty of life jackets for all.

Alexandria National Cemetery is a beautiful and solemn military cemetery that commemorates the sacrifices of those who have fought for our country. The grounds are well-maintained, and visitors are welcome to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this important national monument.
I was visiting the African American Heritage Park when I noticed an Arlington-like cemetery beyond the trees... I made my way over there and was blessed by what I saw. Alexandria National Cemetery... I'd never heard of it. Beautifully landscaped solemn grounds memorializing those who sacrificed for this country.

I occasionally spend time in the area and finally was able to spend time here at the Alexandria National Cemetery. I enjoyed reading the history of this cemetery and the history of the national cemetery system (was not aware!). The grounds are solemn and well kept. My thoughts and prayers to all the service members here and their families. I'm glad I was able to spend some time here, learn about this place, and dwell on so many people's sacrifices.

A bit out of the way but an interesting corner of history. Much smaller than the well known military cemetery in Arlington but still an important little piece of history and it is still in use. Worth visiting for reflection on our history and the cost of war.

Alexandria National Cemetery is a historic cemetery established in the mid-1800s and maintained by the government. The gravestones look similar to those found at the famous Arlington National Cemetery. What's interesting about the Alexandria National Cemetery is that there are other cemeteries right behind it with older history and gravestones. Together, they make a peaceful place for a stroll to reflect on life.
Austin G — Google review
Clean, quiet and beautifully maintained, the cemetery is in the western portion of the Wilkes Street Cemetery complex. It's a collection of cemeteries dating as part back to 1751. If your into local history do a web search for the complex and Old Town Alexandra history to download a walking tour. It's a few blocks from the subway and boarders the US patent office where there is a tiny modern museum / exhibition space.

When the weather is nice, this is the place I want to be. Living in old town can be a bit noisy but this little park helps me enjoy a bit of nature and it's a quite a treat too! The landscape is so well kept, there are plenty of benches to sit on, many trees that offer shade when it's really hot and sunny out, and the "trail" itself is nice to get your exercise on too. It's kind of a combination of being both a park and a dog park without the actual dog fence in place - I think it would be nice to have an official dog area in place but they do have a dog fountain for dogs to replenish themselves. My boyfriend and I LOVE to picnic at this park and while it does get busy during the nice weather - it doesn't take away the beauty at all. It's a very pleasant and hip area where you will find both families and friends of all ages hanging out - even on summer nights! Old town is charming altogether, but this is one of my favorite places to be for sure.

Woodlawn & Frank Lloyd Wright’s Pope-Leighey House is a unique destination that showcases the contrast between early 1800s architecture and the innovative designs of the 1900s. The site features a former plantation with an early-1800s mansion, as well as a modest 1940 home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
We toured Frank Lloyd Wright’s Pope-Leighey house, representing Wright’s little-seen Usonian style. Beautiful yet modest building in a wooded setting. Our tour guide, Autumn, was knowledgeable and engaging, offering surprising details and entertaining anecdotes. Wonderful outing!
Bill G — Google review
I went to Woodlawn many years ago, so it was nice to go back. I went specifically for the annual needlework show that is held there each March. The house was closed for the show. However, if you are interested in the fiber arts, I highly recommend this show. Also, the Pope-Leighey House, a Usonian style house by Frank Lloyd Wright is on the property and is possible to tour. We'll worth seeing if you are a Wright fan. The gardens were not in bloom, but even given this, they did not seem extensive. Woodlawn did not seem particularly welcoming to people with physical restrictions. The main bathrooms, for example, were down a flight of stairs in the basement. I did not see an elevator but maybe there is one. Best to check on this ahead of any visit.
Tassey R — Google review
Woodlawn is a wonderful field trip to learn more about the George Washington’s family and the rich heritage of the land of the original Mount Vernon estate lands. Highly recommend a presentation by Elizabeth Reese for your group on the topic you are exploring here. We attended a Lafayette focused talk, she was excellent on the topic. The permanent structure tent for presentations, lectures and I assume social events (Weddings) was beautifully appointed with all the needed audiovisual equipment. Don’t hesitate to use this venue, great service and staff on hand. Parking is close to the venue, just adjacent the tented pavilion.
Elise ( — Google review
The reason I went was because it was a field trip for a school project. I thoroughly enjoyed both houses for different reasons. The history behind both homes was fascinating. Quite the juxtaposition of style.
Kelly H — Google review
A must-see for architecture lovers! The Frank Lloyd Wright Pope-Leighey House is an understated architectural treasure. This Usonian (“US-Utopian”) home offers a fascinating glimpse into Wright’s vision for affordable, beautifully designed living. The 45-minute tour is a great crash course in his design philosophy—minimalist, functional, and attuned to nature. Don’t miss the list of Wright’s famous “No-Nos”—it’s both amusing and insightful. The story of Marjorie Leighey, who fought to preserve this home, is truly inspiring.
Tia W — Google review
I've visited the Frank Lloyd Wright house about 8 times, 2 in the last year. Oddly enough, every time I visit, there are people who not only love Frank Lloyd Wright but have visited a bunch of his other houses and have a great deal of previous knowledge about the architect. The young lady who does the visit is a current teacher in the public school system in Virginia and she is passionate, fun and knowledgeable about her topic. I highly recommend visiting first Woodlawn Plantation then doing the 5 minute walk to the Pope house. Even the gift shop has fun stuff. I love the Frank Lloyd Wright stained glass drinking glasses. I bought a whole set!
Maria-Cristina M — Google review
The Frank Lloyd Wright house was incredible. I’m usually not a fan of more modern architecture but the Pope Leighey house was so warm, cozy, and truly special. Everything was so thoughtfully designed and our tour guide, Autumn was so knowledgeable, friendly, and told the story of FLW, the Popes, and the Leighey’s so well. Really such a unique architectural experience. Woodlawn is usually more my style of tour since I love colonial and early American history as well as Federal and Georgian style architecture. This tour was extremely disappointing. I wish there was a way to review these two properties separately as the Pope Leighey house would be 5 stars and the Woodlawn experience would be a 2. The house itself seems like it isn’t very well-maintained with cracks readily visible both inside and outside. There is also very little period furniture in the home which is shocking to me. I think we can all agree that slavery is bad and I think there is definitely a balance to addressing the past while also still telling the story of the inhabitants of the home. The rooms had bare minimum furniture and art on the walls, but every room was covered with huge placards constantly pummeling us about how slavery is bad. It’s really not what I came to the home to learn about. I came to learn about the Washington extended family and how the home played a part in the larger American history story. Additionally, we were told that the home had quite a few families living in the house but there’s really only one family I wanted to learn about? There was a point in the tour when the tour guide just glazed over the other families like “this one was racist so their views about the house were invalid and now we’re moving on” and “this lady added the unsightly radiators”. I would come back again to do various other Pope Leighey tours but I really think Woodlawn could be completely skipped.

The Alexandria Visitor Center, housed in the historic Ramsay House on 221 King St, is a must-visit for anyone exploring Old Town. Originally the residence of William Ramsay, who played a key role in founding Alexandria, this center offers brochures, maps, tickets and insider tips on local attractions and events. Additionally, it features a charming gift shop with Alexandria-themed souvenirs.
A good place to start if you're visiting Old Town. There are maps, information on shops, restaurants and special events, and a wide range of gifts. The Visitors Guide has a self-guided walking tour that's easy to follow and will give you some interesting historical background. There's a lovely porch if you want to sit and rest in the shade, or benches in the garden. If stairs are a problem, there are Visitors Guides, local newspapers and maps on the ground level near the public restrooms.

We stopped at the Visitor Center after we grabbed our morning coffee, to see what was happening in Old Town. We finished our coffee in the comfy seats on the porch. Then after we checked out the extensive information inside, the helpful staff asked if we were interested in a walking tour. It turned out that there was one leaving from there within a few minutes and we decided to go. The price was very reasonable and our guide, (Ashley?) was so friendly and knowledgable. There is so much history and historical architecture around every corner, from as far back as the 1700's. Just imagining George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and other Forefathers roaming these streets was worth the visit.

It's incredible how many sacrificed and are sacrificing for this country, and we have so many who are so unappreciative of what this country has to offer. The direction we are heading is going to make many look back and remember the "good days when we had freedom". Sad time we are in...

It has great shade and sitting area for picnic. We had a church picnic about 200 people and the space was very convenient to host us all. The cleanliness and spaciousness is very conducive. Greatly recommend it for picnic for groups of every size. Great playground. If you plan on playing soccer my two cents are; be mindful that the grass is a bit long for the ball to roll smoothly and you might want to bring dedicated soccer shoes to avoid sliding.

We recently rented lot D for my daughters 2 year old birthday party. It was such a cute place. The process to rent it out online was quick and easy. Their system automatically has reminders and noticed before your event. You have to get a license if you want to rent out a moon voice but other than that they allow beer and wine without an ABC license. There is so much park space around the gazebo that we set up a soccer field and had so much fun. The lot has a driveway up so you can drive up and place your grills or unload. They allow you to decorate and also placed a port-a-potty close since the neared bathroom facilities are pretty far away. There is also lots of parking. Great time and would love to rent it out again.

I don't need to say much more than a nice place to have a romantic picnic plus it has my Hunt family name on the sign which was a real surprise 🫢.

The park is well kept and very pretty. The Endicott system batteries are well preserved with very little graffiti, and are fairly easy to access via trail. It was really cool to learn about the forts history during World War Two as a top secret center for interrogating POWs, although most if not all of the buildings from that time are now gone. Be aware: theres a lot of ice in the area behind Battery Mount Vernon during the winter!

Great facility. Clean batbrooms. Plenty of parking. Very large pavillions.

I love it for the late-night hangout star watching vibes. Several side of the road parking areas open all night.. East Potomac Park closes at 1pm. This one doesn't close. 👌🏾

Just a beautiful park. Ample parking spaces, separate bathrooms, lots of trash bins. Some picnic tables are worn out though. The scenery coming through the park is just breathtaking

The Basilica of Saint Mary, located in Alexandria, Virginia, is the first Catholic parish in the state and has a rich history dating back to the late 1700s. It holds the honor of being designated as the first basilica in Virginia, the first in the Diocese of Arlington, and the 84th in the United States. The majestic venue boasts breathtaking architecture that provided a perfect setting for a memorable wedding. Visitors have described their experience at St.
We visited to light a candle for a loved one. Very nice historic church, with many stain glassed windows, and statues. Worth a stop in.

This Basilica has so many special memories for my family. My son was christened here many years ago. It was so wonderful to come back to visit The service was wonderful and the level of the Priests here is amazing. One thing that brought back a funny memory was the parking lot has not changed as people park in every single spot and you must wait for them to leave to be able to get out.
Delaina S — Google review
Such a peaceful and beautiful place to visit. The architecture of The Basilica of Saint Mary is stunning—classic, elegant, and rich with history. It’s quiet and serene inside, perfect for reflection or simply taking in the beauty of the space. A hidden gem that offers both spiritual and architectural inspiration.

Built in 1795, mass was amazing. I love the reverance for the Eucharist here.
Greg N — Google review
The oldest Catholic parish in the Commonwealth. George Washington actually donated money to help get it established, in 1795, making the parish 230 years old. The current church building dates from 1827, while (in 1830) the bricks from the original 1795 church were repurposed to build the Alexandria Lyceum. A vibrant, and active Catholic community, and a beautiful, nearly 200 year old church.

Lovely Family Mass geared for children at 8:30 am today. The use of Latin hymns under these conditions was surprising. Still, all the families in attendance filled me with joy.

Nestled on the banks of the Potomac River, River Farm is a picturesque escape offering breathtaking views of gardens, meadows, and waterfront scenes across its 25 acres. Once part of George Washington's original properties, this historic site boasts stunning landscapes and a charming house with character. Visitors can enjoy serene moments by the water in rocking chairs or explore the beautiful grounds for picnics and outdoor events.
Lovely venue for a wedding in the Manor 1800s there were so many areas that you can rent for an event. Indoors or outdoors under a tent, they even have 2 for a larger party. Under the old oak tree, in front of the Potomac River views are espectacular...Gardens flowers its so romantic with gardens !! Will revisit and recommend!

River Farm is one of the most peaceful and picturesque venues I’ve had the pleasure of photographing. With its sweeping views of the Potomac River, lush gardens, and historic charm, every part of the property feels like it was made for timeless wedding photos. The ceremony spaces, especially the lawn overlooking the river and the charming garden paths, offer dreamy light throughout the day. There’s a perfect blend of natural beauty and elegance, and the grounds give couples plenty of room to explore for portraits without ever feeling crowded. Photographing weddings at River Farm always feels relaxed and joyful. The changing colors through the seasons, the historic estate house, and the overall atmosphere make it such a beautiful and unique setting in Northern Virginia.

The farm is greatly improved test with more grass and fantastic gardens. This month there are many sculptures throughout the gardens. If you love plants, you will love this place.

Superb riverfront property to enjoy nature in the Mount Vernon area while also providing a beautiful home and gardens for a wedding venue and/or wedding photos.
Desiree C — Google review
First, I have to say — the venue itself is absolutely beautiful. Right on the river, surrounded by tons of green space, it made for a gorgeous setting. I was there for my niece’s wedding, and the space truly was lovely. So why only two stars? Unfortunately, the management’s attitude completely took away from the experience. More than once, guests could clearly hear staff saying, “If all guests are not off the property by the designated time, we’ll be calling the police.” I don’t usually jump to conclusions or assume race plays a role, but when that kind of statement is repeated multiple times — at a joyful family celebration — it’s hard not to wonder. At minimum, it was rude, unnecessary, and disrespectful to the couple and their guests. By 11 p.m., it was obvious the planner, her team, and family members were working quickly to clear the space. Threatening to call the police on people who were clearly packing up was completely out of line. To make matters worse, we were also expected to empty trash cans in the bathrooms and kitchen — not exactly what anyone anticipates after a long day celebrating a wedding. The venue gets full points for scenery, but management needs serious work on professionalism and basic customer respect.

The Alfred Street Baptist Church is one of the oldest congregations in Alexandria and one of the oldest in the Washington area. The church was originally built in 1855, and has since offered both religious and secular learning opportunities for African Americans. In addition to its traditional services, the church also operates an educational branch that provides education to both children and adults.
I finally visited after finding out about this church a year ago. Great pastor & great sermon. I can tell the congregation loves their church because I arrived 5 minutes early to the second service and was almost sent to the overflow. I know next time to arrive much earlier. Parking: if you don’t get there early enough the garage parking will be full & you then have to find street parking & then walk. I had to walk 2 blocks, but at least the street parking is free on Sundays.

Was there to help in the celebration of Mrs. Garrett as she retired as the lead over the Worship Arts Ministry for well over forty years. Incredible gift, and her last Sunday in that lead role was no less than exceptional. The congregation and atmosphere is always friendly, and Pastor Wesley’s message always gives you something to meditate on during the week back and go back read your bible. It is tough to get seated inside the main sanctuary if you dont get there at least an hour in advance.

The building could probably be 3 times as large because they people are not able to be all together in the same room for this amazing church service. God is moving in this place though. It takes planning to get there and find a seat in the main sanctuary.

Awesome place of Worship, The Word of God is truly being taught and lived in there. I'm so glad that I visited and was totally Blessed by the Word. God ,Bless Pastor and his Congregation, I will be back .Praise you Jesus.

Sr. Pastor John Wesley is a class act and extremely talented. He believes in supporting and advocating for women in leadership and exemplifying what walking the walk of faith looks like with not only the successes but all of the struggles, pitfalls it comes with. This church is a community that believes in tithing the tithe. Plenty of ministries and services that give back to the community.

My first experience at Alfred Street Baptist Church was on New Year's Day...I believe 2024. The praise & worship was wonderful...and then the word was electric! My second time, 4/27/25...a lady spoke an encouraging word, "He Restoreth My Soul". Definitely a place to go visit...and the people are friendly!

Nestled near Fort Hunt Park, Grist Mill Park is a delightful destination for families and dog lovers alike. This charming park features a sprawling playground perfect for toddlers, alongside expansive open fields ideal for picnics or playtime. While the playground equipment is generally in good condition, some areas show signs of wear that parents should monitor closely. The park also boasts well-maintained sports fields, although they require reservations for use.
I am not writing this review to recommend the things praised in other reviews, I am giving it this score because of the community garden that is in the park. I have been gardening here for the past three years and look forward to many more. During the main growing season, representatives from the County’s master gardener program are there on certain Saturdays to help answer any gathering questions you may have. Other gardeners who tend plots are also very helpful and are willing to lend a hand or a tool if you need something special.

This was the Smaller museum near the national mall Gave it four stars because seventy percent of The museum was closed for changing/renovate. Lots of DEI hires.. welcome to DC! Visited in late October wasn't too crazy.Busy tons of food trucks out front selling overpriced ice cream.. food vendors in trucks likely not American citizens fyi

Great Little park for a Saturday afternoon with toddlers. The equipment is in good shape, except for a couple of stairs to show their wear with rust coming through thus making sharp little edges that might be dangerous for a kid if they fall, but that would probably rarely happen. The football field and baseball field are both well maintained, however not accessible to just folks coming into the park to use; one probably have to reserve them. There is a basketball court and a soccer field and they’re both decent and opened. My only misgiving is that the basketball court has got a bigger grade than necessary; guess to avoid puddles.

Needs more trees for shades Water fountain for dogs and cats.other than that very nice!

Note: this review is only for the dog park Grist Mill dog park is hit or miss for us. Sometimes it's amazing and sometimes people aren't good about keeping an eye on their dogs. Pros: The park itself is huge, with lots of room for dogs to run. There are lots of trees for shade, and benches and picnic tables for people to sit at. There's tons of parking, but you'll have to walk a little ways up the trail to access the dog park. Cons: The stone dust surface can get pretty dusty if there hasn't been any rain, and will hold puddles of questionable liquids if it has. There are kiddie pools there, which some people enjoy for their dogs, but that breed mosquitoes and add to a gross muddy situation around the water pump. Not an issue in winter, but definite an issue in the summer.
Allison E — Google review
Great playground, well maintained tied and great playing fields. There's a community garden and dog park. Parking gets insane during soccer season. Port a potties only

The Robert E. Lee Boyhood Home, also known as the Potts-Fitzhugh House, was constructed in 1795 and is an exemplary representation of Federal period architecture. It was occupied by General Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee's family for approximately nine years during the early 19th century. General Lee, a renowned cavalry officer during the American Revolution and author of a well-known tribute to Washington, resided here with his young family.
Though Lee is deeply unfashionable at the moment, and the house is private and not open for tours, it's still a beautiful example of Federal architecture and a fine high-style example.
