The University Church of St Mary the Virgin is a stunning CofE place of worship with an intricate 14th-century spire. It's located on the High Street and offers breathtaking views of the city from its tower, making it a perfect starting point for your day in Oxford. The church also hosts regular musical recitals and events, adding to its cultural significance.
A stunning and historic gem in the heart of Oxford. The church itself is beautiful, peaceful, and typically uncrowded—a perfect place to pause and reflect. Entry is free, and it’s a must-see for history buffs, especially knowing that C.S. Lewis delivered his famous Weight of Glory sermon here. Climbing the tower costs £6 and is well worth it, though be prepared: 158 steps await, with about half in a very tight spiral. It gets especially tricky at the top if it’s crowded—the narrow passageways make it difficult to pass others, and the path around the tower leads to a dead end, so backtracking is required. Still, the panoramic views of Oxford, particularly of All Souls College and the Radcliffe Camera, are absolutely breathtaking. Bonus tip: do not miss the Vaults & Garden Café right on-site. Delicious food in a beautiful setting. This church and tower climb are a highlight of any visit to Oxford.
Dan A — Google review
Exquisite visit of the church, and its clock tower, with a one person colimaçon stairs, that gives access to a superb view of Oxford's 4 cardinal points. The price at 6£ is fair, the staff is friendly, and it smells like a Harry Potter's book.
Xavier G — Google review
Stunning partial panoramic view of the University Church! Be aware that the staircase is very narrow and steep - not recommended for elderly. Make sure you are fit to climb the stairs up and down (same way). The alleyway at the top was narrow, confined and packed. It was a one way path so you had to move if someone was coming in or out. That also meant you won’t be able to stay for long because of the incoming traffic. It was worth visiting once because this was probably the only place in Oxford where you could see a top view of the beautiful Radcliffe Camera.
Yvonne T — Google review
The University Church of St Mary felt like the soul of Oxford. Its spire reached gracefully into the sky, while inside the stillness carried centuries of prayer and thought. Climbing the tower, the city opened below me like a living manuscript — rooftops, spires, and stories stretching in every direction.
AJay S — Google review
Beautiful church, inside and out. Tower has outstanding views of Oxford and the surrounding countryside. 127 steps, give it a pass if you're more than about 90 kilos.
Paulo R — Google review
In the heart of Anglo-Saxon Oxford, a church was founded on this site on High Street, which became the first university building in 1096. Since then, the university and the church have been inextricably linked, as evidenced by the name: the University Church of St Mary the Virgin. The oldest part of the church is the tower, dating from 1270. In the late 15th and early 16th centuries, the main body of the church was rebuilt in Perpendicular Gothic style. In 1637, the Baroque south porch, a work by Master Mason Nicholas Stone, was added. Be sure to visit this interesting and beautiful church, if only for the panoramic view from the top of the tower.
Koen — Google review
Magnificent church in the centre of Oxford, largely constructed between the 14th to 16th century, with an earlier 13th century tower. The church is one of Oxford's most distinctive landmarks, featuring an ornately decorated spire completed in the 14th century, and an impressive nave built in the perpendicular style. It was used by residents of Oxford and the university, and housed the university's library until 1488. Today, visitors can look around the church free of charge, though a separate charge applies to climb the tower, ascending 127 steps to the top, an effort rewarded with excellent views over Oxford's skyline and surroundings. The latest prices and opening times are on the website.

Nice cafe at the Church. A bit crowded at noon tine but the food was great. The surrounding view is stunning as shown in the clip in front of the cafe. Recommending outside seating when the weather is nice like this.

St Michael at the North Gate is a historic church in Oxford, originally built in the 11th century with Victorian additions. The Saxon Tower of the church dates back to 1040 and is considered Oxford's oldest building. It was named after its location near the northern gate of the city walls. The tower houses the cell door of the Oxford Martyrs and offers panoramic views of the city. Visitors can also explore other nearby landmarks such as Carfax Tower, St.
The church is free entry. You can pay to go up the tower. £3.50 adults, £2 kids. It’s worth it to get the view and there are interesting museum exhibits on the way up and the church bells and clock mechanism are still there to see. This is one of the two towers in Oxford you can climb, the other being the Carfax Tower. Enjoy!
Chris G — Google review
An amazing place to visit - the oldest building in Oxford. Definably worth a effort and price to climb to the top of the Saxon tower, believes it around 100 steps to the top - great views and you get to see (and hear) the bells as you climb. Make sure you press the clock mechanism button as you climb. The stained glass windows in the church are truly and amazing. A wonderful place to visit a true gem of English history and can't wait to visit again. If you get a nice day you can even see Antony Gormleys Sculpture on top of a building in Broad Street.
Stephanie W — Google review
I had a good day in Oxford this week when visiting. This church was the highlight. The crafts, church decor, history and view from the roof as you can see in the photos I took. I'm coming back for more of the stained glass crafts.
Peter B — Google review
One of the four gates of Oxford this Saxon tower is around a thousand years old and part of what was a church dwellings and a prison. If was part of the wall defense of Oxford. There's a lot of good information to be read. £3.50 and thanks to the Corona I had it all to myself. The views from the top are lovely.
Barry G — Google review
This is an interesting, small historic church in the centre of Oxford. The Saxon tower, built around 1040, is the oldest building in the city for which there is a fee to climb, currently £3.50 (Adults) £2.00 (Children) with concessionary and family tickets also available. These can be purchased in the small shop. There are some interesting artefacts to see going up the 97 steps and a view of the city from the top.. The church was rebuilt several times during the medieval period and restored in the 19th century. There are a variety of free concerts on most Mondays at 1pm with a retiring collection for a charity nominated by the musicians. As you come out of the church gift shop don't miss the Fairtrade shop on the right down some steps to the basement.
Wendy E — Google review
In for a thrill? Contemplation? Historical information? It has it all. A hidden gem of Oxford on its very own high street. Standing tall and proud adjacent church is welcome to all with amazing and beautifully crafted architectural features that leave you smiling. And if that's not enough? Why not test your bravery on the staircase to heaven. A.k.a. The Tower. £3.50 per adult entry and scary heights with rich history. Sad to say we didn't get any photos of the view as we were a little jelly legged! BUT it was an amazing once in a lifetime moment to definitely not be marred by the need to take a photo.
Hope M — Google review
An absolutely beautiful church in the centre of Oxford that offers incredible history and a place of peace and quiet reflection. The church tower is said to be the oldest building in Oxford (Constructed in 1040) and for a small fee, you can climb to the top for some wonderful and unforgettable views of Oxford.

Cathedral
Christ Church Cathedral is a medieval Gothic and Romanesque cathedral that serves both Christ Church college and the local parish. It holds the unique position of being both a college chapel and the cathedral of the Diocese of Oxford. Despite its small size, it has a rich history dating back to before the Norman Conquest, with a shrine built in memory of St Frideswide, an Anglo-Saxon princess who founded a convent on the site.
This cathedral at Christ church is the college chapel as well as cathedral of Oxford. It's located within the college premises. It's definitely worth visiting if you are in Oxford. You can book a guided tour or self guided tour. We booked a self guided tour which comes with a device and headset. Device is interactive and you can get minute-long audio and video explanations of the different parts. Harry Potter fans will easily recognize some of the places. To me the main highlight of the cathedral was it's beautiful stained glass window, architecture and cloisters.
Prashant S — Google review
Unimaginable beauty. If you are considering a trip to Oxford from London or anywhere for that matter you need to stop here. There is so much rich history and architectural beauty on display it is hard to believe it was created 100s of years ago. Furthermore, if you are a Harry Potter fan, this feels like you are walking down the halls of Hogwarts. Highly recommend!
Jake G — Google review
My goodness what a fantastic place! Amazing buildings, corridors, hall, cathedral...feels like no where else, such an atmosphere! I can only emagine how does it feel like to study and live here! My inner child was endlessly happy!!

Christ Church Cathedral, located in Oxford, is a stunning architectural masterpiece and one of the most famous cathedrals in England. As the mother church of the Diocese of Oxford, it boasts a rich history dating back to the 12th century. The cathedral features a blend of Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles, with its impressive stained glass windows, intricate stone carvings, and a majestic vaulted ceiling. Inside, visitors can admire the beautiful choir and the famous Christ Church organ, as well as the remarkable memorials and artworks that reflect its historical significance. The cathedral is also home to the Christ Church College, adding to its vibrant academic atmosphere. Surrounded by picturesque gardens and the serene ambiance of Oxford, Christ Church Cathedral is a must-visit for those interested in history, architecture, and the spiritual heritage of the area. Its combination of beauty and historical importance makes it a highlight of any visit to Oxford. Please be aware that the staff inside Christ Church may not come across as very friendly and might seem somewhat rude.

Beautiful place that must visit in Oxford especially if you are Harry Potter fans. Lots of area to explore with tablet audio guide to fulfill the story of each area. Too bad that cathedral itself was close during our visit.
OaKiE P — Google review
Warm welcome. Choir excellent. Worship Anglican. Building didn't have a brilliant acoustic so choral evensong lost a bit in the telling. Place itself is beautiful but felt curiously flat from a spiritual perspective.
Andrew K — Google review
Spectacular cathedral with the oldest history going back to Saxon times but some remnants of the Norman builders are actually visible. It is a vibrant, richly decorated space with a lot of history. The stories come well alive with the audio guide!
PWF R — Google review
Iconic & Legendary Cathedral If you are like me an architecture buff, then you have to visit this cathedral. It is both old (dating back to Saxon times probably around 12th century) and beautiful. What I like on top of the grandeur that emanate from this place of worship is the fact that it is still in use as the college church. Note it was expanded, adapted, etc many times in its history but the final result is absolutely stunning. Well worth a visit, book this in advance if you do not want to miss it. If you are still wondering, this is the MOST iconic cathedral in Oxford.

The Catholic Oratory in Oxford is a beautiful, imposing church with stunning artwork and an active congregation. The Latin mass is wonderful and the community is very welcoming. There are plenty of activities for different groups to get together.
Love the architecture of this Church. The Church Is small compared to the Oratory Church in London but is sombre and beautiful. The person in the front office is very helpful and friendly.

A very nice church in the heart of Oxford; tucked away behind its small gates. Has lovely architecture all over the ceiling.
Adil R — Google review
This Roman Catholic chapel was originally run by the Jesuits before becoming part of the Oratory movement. The chapel is very ornate. It is being restored from same damaging painting over murals (battleship grey paint post ww2). The shine to Newman has various artefacts that probably have significance to Roman Catholics. Well worth a visit, very different to most other Anglican churches although some colleges chapels are similar.
James N — Google review
Gorgeous spot to visit, whether or not you are religious. If you are Catholic, expect a reverent, beautiful liturgy! Well worth stopping in to look around, pray, and especially attend Mass. The gift shop is very pleasant as well and well-stocked with books and religious gifts.
Erin P — Google review
This is a fantastic church. Although it is not my home parish, I occasionally treat myself to a visit because it offers a Mass that is entirely to my liking - a traditional Catholic experience that harks back to my youth. A full church with a friendly congregation that is drawn from miles around speaks volumes.

St Barnabas Church, located in the vibrant Jericho district of Oxford, is a striking example of Italianate architecture. Built in 1869, it stands as a testament to the Oxford Movement High Church tradition and features a Venetian-style square bell tower and Romanesque basilica. The church's interior is adorned with remarkable ceramic paintings depicting Gospel stories, setting it apart from other churches.
Went to a performance there by the singing group 'Rivers'. Brilliant . Performance soon at New Theatre, Oxford. Lovely church. Can't believe I'd not been inside before.

Solid liturgy if you like Anglo Catholic rites, very welcoming and supportive clergy. Singing a bit ropey and it's a shame that church is a little run down. Whenever I go there I feel like getting a duster out and start cleaning up :-)

A masterpiece...if you don't go you won't understand what I mean! Inside the painting are amazing; it's different than any other church: even the wall are covered with ceramic painted of Gospel stories! Close there is the walk along the Thames and not far a path to another walk along the river which is amazing and must be done
Danyla P — Google review
It's a lovely church. I found the interior eclectic: wall paintings and paintings that looked orthodox, stations and a lady chapel looked Catholic, but the church is high Anglican. It's a must see, in my opinion. I took a star off because it's often closed and there s nowhere that says when it's open

Attending an evensong here is highly recommended, as the choir's performance is said to be magnificent and soul-stirring.

Merton College Chapel, the largest of its kind at Oxford University, is a stunning example of Early English architecture that dates back to the 13th century. Originally constructed in 1266, it faced significant deterioration by 1288 and was rebuilt starting in 1290, with its impressive East Window completed by 1294. This chapel not only serves as a spiritual haven but also embodies centuries of history integral to both Merton College and the broader narrative of Oxford.
This chapel is nicely tucked inside Merton college and is a real treat to experience. When we were there, we were completely alone inside the chapel and were able to enjoy the tall gothic architecture, painted ceilings, and colorful windows. The hours are strange for Merton College so check ahead if you will be able to enter!

The Ashmolean Museum is a true treasure of history and art. Walking through its halls feels like traveling across centuries and cultures, from ancient statues to delicate paintings and fascinating artifacts. Each room invites you to slow down and look closer, always offering something that sparks curiosity. It is a place where the past and present meet beautifully, leaving you inspired and enriched. Entry to the museum is free. The museum is multi-story (5 floors). It contains artifacts from ancient and modern times and from all past and present civilizations. The museum is enjoyable to spend time in and gain knowledge about past civilizations and take science, knowledge and lessons from them. If you get tired, you can take a break in the museum café located in the basement or the museum restaurant located on the fourth floor. Visiting the museum is enjoyable and culturally rich.

I wanted to see the Tradescant collection, from the English settlement period of Virginia, Powhatans mantle specifically. It was an easy day trip from London Paddington station. Ut turned out to be my favorite museum! So many world treasures! Beautiful exhibit designs, lovely lighting. The rich colors compliment the objects and time periods. Labels easy to read. Nice, quick-lunch cafe, big enough to rest a few minutes before going on. More manageable size compared to The British Museum.

I recommend that you take enough time to get better information because there are many galleries in the museum, from Ancient History to modern art. I recommend that you take enough time to get better information because there are many galleries in the museum. My favourite galleries were Ancient Greek, Roman galleries and painting galleries. The Pissarro gallery, which includes the works of C.Pissarro, V.Gogh and E.Manet, is definitely worth seeing. I hope to travel again. Because it was a very good experience.

Fabulous museum! The collection is diverse and beautifully presented. There is something for everyone: stairs and sculpture, portraiture, artifacts, and fashion. The staff are very welcoming. This should be your first stop during a visit to Oxford. Try to go midweek in the afternoon for a more quiet experience.

Amazing experience. Really worth a visit. Car park is difficult, but during the week you can park at Westgate which is not so busy. They do not charge your entry, but a donation is welcome and I think they well deserve it. Most of the time they have a tour guide who volunteer to show you some spotlights and explain what you are seeing. They have a lot more info they it's displayed, so worth the tour also. Good to visit with family and friends. Whether you like history or not, they have very interesting artefacts.

Brilliantly presented museum in the heart of oxford with amazingly crafted sculptures and artwork. Recommend spending a few hours here and bring a camera. Few admission with donations that can be made via contact less card. Definitely recommend a visit if your nearby. 5*

Christ Church, a renowned university college established in 1546, is often referred to as "The House" by its members. The grand main quad, Tom Quad, features a massive bell that rings 101 times every evening. The college's medieval chapel has served as Oxford's cathedral since the time of Henry VIII. Its dining hall is famous for its appearances in popular films and television shows and is often recognized as the Hogwarts Great Hall from the Harry Potter series.
Legendary & Iconic College For Harry Potter fans this is the place. Anyone wants to have breakfast in the Great Hall ? See the turning staircases? Here you will see where JK R. got a lot of her inspiration from, it is well worth your time. Obviously there are lots of tourists & HP fans but still well worth the visit. Here you have a few options but we choose the self guided tour. It was very good as it allows you to go at your own pace and skip some less interesting parts or stay longer in others. This is a must do visit for all Harry Potter fans. Note it also has one of the nicest Cathedrals in all the Oxford colleges which by itself is worth the visit. Highly recommended from us!

Visited Christ Church mainly for the Harry Potter sights and it did not disappoint! We saw several iconic spots from the films, like the staircase from the first movie and the Great Hall that inspired Hogwarts’ dining room. It was a bit crowded and the entrance fee is on the pricier side, but it was still absolutely worth it. The guide shared some fun facts and behind-the-scenes stories that added a nice extra touch to the visit. A must-see for any Potter fan (or history buff, honestly)!
Ragnhild H — Google review
Christ Church is breathtaking and full of history. As a Harry Potter fan I loved the references even though the main hall scenes were filmed in the studio. Still I cannot believe they built such a detailed set without shooting at least a few moments in the real hall. The stairs alone are iconic. One suggestion would be to offer a self guided tour option as the place is so rich in details that wandering freely would be an amazing experience

Visited Chris Church and was truly captivated by the experience. Firstly, the exterior of the church is magnificent and grand, while the interior showcases exceptional craftsmanship. As part of Oxford University, it is imbued with historical significance and cultural heritage. The well-maintained gardens are tidy and aesthetically pleasing, adding to the overall charm. Additionally, as one of the filming locations for Harry Potter, the church carries an extra layer of mystery and enchantment. Highly recommended for a visit!
Amanda L — Google review
The Christ Church tour was absolutely stunning and far beyond what I expected. I originally went just to see the famous Hogwarts staircase, but the whole place is breathtaking and much larger than I imagined. We explored at our own pace and ended up staying longer than planned. The audio guide seems more suited for those interested in studying at the college, as it includes detailed academic and historical information that casual visitors might skip. For tourists like me, wandering around freely was perfect. Just remember it is still an operating school, so a few areas are restricted and visitors should keep noise to a minimum. Definitely worth the visit for every Harry Potter fan.
Alvina — Google review
Excellent self-guided tour (with a concise and relevant audio guide) around Christ Church, its quads and its gardens. Avoid visiting between 12 and 2 pm, since the Great Hall will be closed (students' lunch time).

The Sheldonian Theatre, a remarkable Wren-designed building located in Radcliffe Square, is a significant venue for classical concerts, lectures, and university ceremonies. This architectural marvel resembles a Roman theatre and stands out among the Gothic-style buildings in Oxford. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren while he was the Professor of Astronomy at Oxford University, it hosts graduation ceremonies as well as music concerts and lectures. The theater also offers guided tours for those interested in exploring its interior and learning about its history.
Nice circular theatre used for several types of events and University graduations. Also walked along the river to view the rowing boats and ate at the newly opened Dishoom Permit Room Indian restaurant.
Arun A — Google review
The career of famous English architect Christopher Wren naturally began in Oxford, the city where he studied and taught (astronomy, not architecture, as Wren, remarkably, never received any formal training in that field). The Sheldonian Theatre (1664-1669) is his first completed building. Designed in English Baroque style, it is named after Gilbert Sheldon, Warden of All Souls College and later Chancellor of the University and the project's main financier. The theatre is used for music concerts, lectures, and university ceremonies. Definitely worth a visit!
Koen — Google review
The Sheldonian Theatre is one of Oxford’s architectural crown jewels — a masterpiece of classical design, steeped in academic tradition and cultural significance. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren and completed in 1669, it stands as a testament to both innovation and elegance, and is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, architecture, or the life of the University of Oxford. What immediately captures the eye is the theatre’s striking circular form, inspired by ancient Roman theatres, and its distinctive eight-sided cupola, which offers panoramic views over the spires and rooftops of Oxford. The exterior, ringed with a row of iconic stone heads (known as the "Emperors’ Heads"), provides an atmospheric introduction to what lies within. Inside, the Sheldonian is grand yet intimate. The ceiling is an artwork in itself — Robert Streater’s allegorical painting of Truth descending upon the Arts and Sciences — richly detailed and beautifully restored. The space is used for university ceremonies, concerts, and public lectures, and retains a unique sense of occasion and scholarly gravitas. Acoustically, the theatre is remarkable, making it a superb venue for choral and orchestral performances. There’s a warmth and resonance to the space that enhances the musical experience. Even during non-event visits, the building has a quiet majesty, especially when viewed from the upper gallery or the cupola. Practicalities are well-handled: the small entrance fee is well worth it, and the information panels provide helpful historical context without overwhelming the visitor. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the entire experience feels well-curated. In short, the Sheldonian Theatre is more than a building — it's a symbol of Oxford’s enduring legacy of learning and artistry. Whether you’re attending a graduation, a concert, or simply exploring, it’s a place that leaves a lasting impression.

Great slice of history and use as a modern theatre and graduation spot. Nice view from the top - check out the hundreds of years of people carving thier names into the wooden beams...

It is an interesting theatre, but the highlight for me is the view from the cupola. One of Wren's earlier works and with an innovative ceiling to avoid any support columns in the theatre space.

The Radcliffe Camera is a stunning 18th-century academic library and reading room located in the heart of Oxford. Designed by the renowned architect James Gibbs, this Palladian-style building stands as a centerpiece in Radcliffe Square, surrounded by other significant landmarks such as the Bodlein Library and St Mary's church. The majestic circular structure, funded by Dr. John Radcliffe's estate, features a magnificent dome and towering pillars that have made it an iconic symbol of the city.
The Radcliffe Camera is one of the most iconic and beautiful buildings in Oxford. Its grand circular design and historic architecture make it a must-see, even if you’re just walking through the city. It looks stunning from every angle—especially when the sun hits the stone. You can’t go inside unless you're part of the university or on a guided tour, but honestly, the real charm is just being there and taking in the view from Radcliffe Square. Surrounded by other impressive buildings like the Bodleian Library and All Souls College, the whole area has a timeless, academic feel. Perfect for photos, a quiet stroll, or just to admire one of Oxford’s most photographed landmarks. Definitely worth stopping by if you're visiting the city.

Standing before the Radcliffe Camera felt like meeting a timeless guardian of knowledge. Its round stone walls rose with elegance, bathed in golden light, as if holding centuries of wisdom in silence. To me, it was less a library and more a poem in architecture.

The Radcliffe Camera is one of Oxford’s most iconic and beautiful landmarks. Its grand circular architecture and elegant stonework make it a stunning sight from every angle. Harsha J — Google review
The most iconic place in Oxford. Must visit. If you’re a traveller, I have a little tip for you. Taking a picture with this Baroque-style circular library requires some careful thought, as most of the photos you see online are probably taken using drones (see below, credits to the amazing Reagan Yip). It is quite difficult to fit yourself into the photo without sacrificing the view. The best photo spot, I learnt, is a balcony inside Exeter College, which is not open to the public. You can consider a low-angle shot - see the matriculation photo below for inspiration - as it captures the impressive Rad Cam whilst adding a tinge of creativity. Certainly a refreshing take on an extremely popular spot. If you’re a student, my honest take is: go somewhere else to study. The interior is gorgeous no doubt, and at some point you should visit this library at least once, but your Bod Card can get you to much nicer study spaces. To quote Robert Frost: “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.”
Chloe K — Google review
Iconic Oxford landmark. Stunning architecture and a great photo spot. You can’t go inside unless you’re a student, but it’s worth seeing up close while walking through Radcliffe Square.

I don’t think another building in Oxford quite yells Oxford as this one does. Surrounded by cobbled streets, intellectual graffiti and dreaming spires. It’s an icon. And if you look around, you might just spot graffiti that looks like it was scribbled on by Michael Palin…
Gordon D — Google review
I’m writing this review for people hoping to use the Radcam as a working space, rather than as a tourist attraction. It’s a beautiful library to work in. Pros • Aesthetics & atmosphere: The interior is stunning, quintessentially Oxford, and even a bit inspiring. The highest floor is my favorite — it feels airy and open under the dome, with lots of natural light streaming through the perimeter windows. • Quietness: Despite being a large, open space with many people, the library remains surprisingly quiet. You can hear the hourly chimes from the nearby University Church, which adds a nice ambiance. • Seating & comfort: There are a few ergonomic chairs mixed in with the classic wooden ones, and three cushioned chairs with footstools on the top floor are especially comfortable for reading. • Plugs & practicality: Plenty of plugs are available, so you can use your laptop without issue. Cons • Toilets: All toilets are on the bottom floor, which can be inconvenient if you’re working on the top floor. They also somehow always stink. • Floor movement: On the upper floors, the floor slightly vibrates when librarians move book carts or when people walk nearby, which can be disorienting when in the zone. • Tourist distractions: While photography is officially prohibited, readers often take photos, which can be distracting if you’re trying to focus. • Retrofitted comfort: The library is retrofitted, so it’s not the most comfortable for extended working periods. Overall Despite some drawbacks, I really enjoy working here. It’s a picturesque, iconic Oxford library, especially if you like airy spaces, natural light, and classic architecture. While it may not be ideal for study marathons, it’s a must-visit working space if you have the privilege.

Nestled among St Mary's Church, Brasenose College, the Bodleian Library, and All Soul's College stands Oxford University's most iconic building: the Radcliffe Camera. Upon his death in 1714, physician John Radcliffe bequeathed £40,000 for the construction of a library. As stipulated in Radcliffe's will, construction of the characteristic circular design by Scottish architect James Gibbs did not begin until 1737, and was completed in 1748. After a considerable delay, the Radcliffe Science Library opened on April 13, 1749, and Francis Wise, Radcliffe's first librarian, began his work.

A wonderful location and a lovely room. The room was sparse but one has to expect that as the rooms are aimed at students. The staff were helpful, pleasant and helpful. My only gripe was the buffet breakfast. The food was lukewarm at best no matter what time one arrived in ghe dining hall. This was not helped with plates being stone cold. The coffee too was not hot. Overall still worth a score of five stars.

Designed by the visionary architect William Butterfield, it showcases an eye-catching polychromatic brickwork that features vibrant red, yellow, and blue bricks arranged in intricate geometric patterns. This innovative design was groundbreaking for its time and continues to set Keble apart from other colleges with their traditional golden stone facades.

George C — Google review
Keble College (/ˈkiːbəl/) is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford in England. Its main buildings are on Parks Road, opposite the University Museum and the University Parks. The college is bordered to the north by Keble Road, to the south by Museum Road, and to the west by Blackhall Road. Keble was established in 1870, having been built as a monument to John Keble, who had been a leading member of the Oxford Movement which sought to stress the Catholic nature of the Church of England. Consequently, the college's original teaching focus was primarily theological, although the college now offers a broad range of subjects, reflecting the diversity of degrees offered across the wider university. In the period after the Second World War the trends were towards scientific courses (proximity to the university science area east of the University Museum influenced this). As originally constituted, it was for men only and the fellows were mostly bachelors resident in the college. Like many of Oxford's men's colleges, Keble admitted its first mixed-sex cohort in 1979. It remains distinctive for its still-controversial neo-gothic red-brick buildings designed by William Butterfield. The buildings are also notable for breaking from Oxbridge tradition by arranging rooms along corridors rather than around staircases, in order that the scouts could supervise the comings and goings of visitors (Girton College, Cambridge, similarly breaks this tradition). Keble is one of the larger colleges of the University of Oxford, with 433 undergraduates and 245 graduate students in 2011/12. Keble's sister college at the University of Cambridge is Selwyn College.

Tom Tower, a Gothic-style structure designed by Christopher Wren, is a renowned landmark in Oxford, England. It stands as the bell tower of Christ Church college and is named after its bell, Great Tom. The tower overlooks Tom Quad and features a statue of Queen Anne. Great Tom chimes 101 times every night to symbolize the original 100 scholars of the college plus one added later. Visitors can admire picturesque old buildings and university campuses while exploring this historical site in Oxford.
Tom Tower is a striking bell tower located at Christ Church College in Oxford, and I was eager to explore it during my visit. Unfortunately, I learned that entry requires purchasing tickets online in advance. Since I came for a day trip and was unaware of this requirement, I was unable to access the tower, which was incredibly frustrating. I discovered that Tom Tower was designed by the renowned architect Christopher Wren and completed in 1682. It features the Great Tom bell, which tolls every evening at 9:05 PM, historically marking the end of the day for the students at Christ Church. I also found out that the tower has gained fame for its appearance in the Harry Potter films, where it served as a backdrop for scenes at Hogwarts. Despite my disappointment in not being able to enter, I appreciated the tower’s historical and cinematic significance from the outside, making it a memorable part of my trip to Oxford.

Incredibly beautiful building with a beautiful garden and history. Great Tom, housed in the tower, is the loudest bell in Oxford. It weighs six and a quarter tons and was moved from the 12th-century Osney Abbey after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Aside from a student prank in 2002 when the clapper was lagged.

St Giles' Church, Oxford is a beautiful place to attend services. The congregation is warm and friendly, and the sermons are thoughtful. The church has seen recent growth including families, and it has a wonderful music program. It's an old church with Victorian architecture, and it is peaceful.
St Giles is an absolutely beautiful, historic church located just north of the centre of Oxford. The church is open most of the time for prayer and quiet reflection. The churchyard is incredibly well preserved and has many beautiful and interesting inscriptions, a way to remember those who came before us.

Beautiful, historic church near St. Giles and Banbury Road in centre of Oxford, open most of the time for prayer and quiet.
AMK 1 — Google review
The Church of St Giles was probably built as a private church by Edwin, son of Godegose, between 1123 and 1133, but soon had a huge but thinly populated parish of its own stretching northwards as far as the present northern bypass, and extending from Walton Street in the West to to the River Cherwell in the east. St John’s College has held the advowson of the church since 1553. It is Grade I listed building. The church was damaged during the siege of Oxford in the Civil War, and in 1643 its furniture was burnt by parliamentary troops who were being held prisoner in the church. The church was originally well north of the Oxford city wall, and the above print dating from 1834 shows that it was then still in a rural setting. As Norham and Walton Manors were developed and Summertown grew, the church must have been very full. It lost Summertown when that village got a church of its own in 1834, and when in 1837 St Paul's Church opened, a slice of St Giles' parish became part of its district chapelry. Then in 1863 St Philip & St James (which originally included the present St Margaret's parish) took over a large section of St Giles' parish. Inside the church there is a fine monument to the former Mayor of Oxford Henry Bosworth that was put up by his wife in 1683. Victoria County History: St Giles' Church, Oxford The Bishop of Oxford Samuel Wilberforce wrote as follows about the parishioners of St Giles in his Diocese Book on 26 January 1857: The mass of shopkeepers are attached to the Church as a respectable profession. No earnestness. The female members valuably aid in District visiting &c. & many more pious. The lower tradesmen very loose as to Church hardly attend except aft[ernoon]. Much good from Miss Hughes & the other Sisters visiting. The poor attached to Church. A great many of the poor go nowhere. Drinking the chief sin amongst the poor, especially am[on]g women.

Best Kept Little Fortress in Town! Staying at Keble College for a few weeks and thought that I would attend advertised Sunday Evensong at this 'local' church. Bells were ringing at 6pm. Doors firmly closed. Tried ringing vicar on number for from notice board re. when would church open, with no response. Attempted communicating by intercom beside door - choir member responded but was unable to advise of when the church would open for 6.30 Evensong. Door again closed. End of story. My verdict: Not a welcoming place by any stretch of the imagination - 'Jude the Obscure' pub in Jericho far more welcoming to strangers. Alas. The Bells, The Bells...maybe they're ringing a warning and not a welcome?

St Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church is a welcoming and diverse community that embraces people from all walks of life. It is located near the hospital, making it convenient for visitors seeking solace. The church provides a peaceful and serene environment for prayer and reflection. Many have found comfort in attending mass here, with some even having their first holy mass at this beautiful place of worship.
A beautiful prayerful Church close to the hospital. Beware parking here if you are not in the Church. Very kind people here.
Pat C — Google review
Please have more consideration for your neighbours. Especially since the parking anpr has been introduced, the visitors seem to have gotten worse parking outside the old people's flats in the next road. Generally speaking the people pulling into and out of the parking lot drive too fast and don't pay attention to the people trying to use the pavement. Just have a bit more consideration to the fact 90+ year old people can't move that fast.
Lisa D — Google review
Nice Catholic Church very close to the JR hospital.
J S — Google review
Very bland church, I was expecting a shrine to St Anthony but it was the smallest of the 3 status and just a candle stand and kneeler. A poor effort really for the saint the church is named after. Nobody spoke to us including the priest.
Karen F — Google review
It is a devouted Community, but be warned they are inhospitality loud. So if you want to pray the rosary, prepair for mass in slicnce, or meditate after mass when you have just received the most Holy Eucharist you won't find safty for that here. Employees and parishaners alike are loud as they speak, and put things up and down before and after mass. Adoration wasn't silent either. They played music on a SmartPhone, making me wonder if they can handle silent meditation and prayer.

Visitors can access the facility by requesting a code from the Oxford ISOC, and it's conveniently located near the road with parking for bike riders.

The episcopal church of St Mary the Virgin is a beautiful Romanesque building located in the village of Iffley. It is well worth visiting for its architecture and history, and it would be a shame to leave it off this list. Walking or biking to Iffley from central Oxford would be manageable, but there is also public transport available if you prefer. The village has a pub and small shop if you need something to eat or drink on the way.
Very nice and historic church. Lots of architectural features from over the centuries. Very good guide book available to get a full understanding of the different parts of the church. Someone has put a lot of effort into this place and it shows.

At the time of my visit in May 2017 the building's exterior was a joyful show of beakheads, fantastic beasts and scenes. I understand it may have since been given a thick coating of a protective substance which will have obscured some of the detail, so not sure my photos will reflect what visitors would now see. The location is scenic with riverside walks close by.

New College Chapel is a beautiful, historic chapel in Oxford. It is free to the public and you can see it during evensong, which is a free musical service. The chapel has gorgeous stained glass, and it is worth visiting even if you are not religious!
Beautiful chapel. Stunning architecture. Amazing atmosphere. Well worth a visit if you like beautiful buildings.

Only 3 stars for the following reason: My friends and I visited this beautiful place, but unfortunately we got lost. We accidentally arrived in a private area where we were forbidden access. We were asked to leave the establishment when a simple reminder would have been enough (and, incidentally, we would have appreciated being listened to), especially since we had paid to go there.

In general I'd recommend applying for another (postgrad) college as college life is a huge part of being in Oxford, if you miss it you will struggle!! espically if you are coming here for a DPhil. But if you end up here, it still a decent college. Let's start with the Pros: 1. The college staff are really really really helpful. 2. it is a postgrad college so you will find alot of 'grown ups' and 'mature' student. 3. Activities are organised by (and mostly for) the students so make sure u voice what you want, or even better, join the student representative committee and make it happen 4. There are many student travel grants, hardship funds, and just thing to help you if you encountered any financial problems. 5. Food is delicious. BUT (the cons) 1. the accommodation and special dinners are very limited and very expensive. 2. There is 570 students and 170 fellows in a such small college which means one thing, this is the university's skip with minimum available resources to accommodate all of these people needs. 3. The college goes cold out-of-term. No events, no meals .. nothing! 4. The common room is ill funded and they have to fight for essentials. 5. Most of the college members avoid going to the college and it is really hard to make friends if you live out of the college. (although that is true for most colleges especially college with undergrad constituent) Edit: Since my review, the college made strides to fix many things

Keble College Chapel isn’t on most standard Oxford tours since it’s set a bit farther out from the main university sights—but it absolutely deserves a visit. We went specifically to attend a lecture, and had we not, we might have missed this incredible space altogether. The chapel is stunning—easily one of the most beautiful and unique in Oxford. Its rich colors and striking architecture set it apart from the others we visited. The side chapel with The Light of the World painting by William Holman Hunt is especially moving, and the story behind how it came to be there adds even more depth. Check visiting hours, but it’s usually free to enter. A perfect place to pause for a quiet moment of reflection and prayer. Truly a hidden gem.

If you have a nostalgia to stay in Oxford University, this is the place you should be. Overall, the rooms were basic and value for money. Nestled in the heart of Oxford, Blackfriars Hall stands as a serene sanctuary for those seeking spiritual solace and community. This beautiful church, adorned with stunning architecture, is home to Dominican friars who don their signature white robes. Visitors can join them for prayer and reflection during the office or attend the lively 9:30 Mass on Sundays, where an inclusive and welcoming congregation thrives.
I go most Sundays to the 9.30 Mass. It has the most friendly and active congregation and very inclusive and welcoming.

We've experienced a form of very inappropriate behaviour by one of the children's liturgy leaders towards our young son at family mass. This person who is present at mass regularly took it upon herself to educate our son on how to behave in church. I (mother) did not consent to her grabbing my son and shushing him, using threatening language ("If you keep acting like this, etc..."). After addressing this with the children's liturgy leader, she accused me of making it all up. When I raised a complaint to one of the priests at the end of mass, I was told she was well-meaning, which is so unhelpful and affirming of her inappropriate behaviour. We will not be coming back unfortunately.

Today we went to a dance competition of primary school children from different schools, 8 teams participated. As a result, more than 50 children received awards, and two groups that did not win anything were excluded from the stage and were forced to stay under the stage in the dark while everyone else danced happily in the light. The children were understanday upset and were crying... What was the organizerslogic behind this? Children that are 7-8 years old, deserve at least some praise for their efforts. It's RIDICULOUS!!! MY FAMILY SPENT 51 POUNDS ON TICKETS, 7 POUNDS PARKING, ONE AND A HALF HOURS WE WAITED FOR THE START OF THE COMPETITION. Can you explain what my money was spent on and why you discriminated against only a small group of children? These people who organized the event should not be working with children, as they lack any common sense on how to work with little children. Parents, think carefully about if you don't want to extinguish the desire to participate in events and contests as well as cause psychological trauma for your little child! The organizers were very rude and disgusting!

When you knock on their front door and enquire about an event you wish to attend, they send you around the back of the building, after some time you realise that you have to walk through a rowdy bar to get to the door to the event your looking for. When entering the event you later find out, the room your in is no more then 15 feet from the first door you knocked on prior to being told to go around the building! True, abundant Christian spirit can be found here, total hypocrisy as one might expect. Ahmen. Someone states below this is a a lovely inclusive church? If this constitutes a bench mark for an inclusive church, then I would hate to enter a noninclusive one.

Church
Nestled in the vibrant city of Oxford, the Oxford Community Church (OCC) stands out as a beacon for those seeking a warm and welcoming spiritual home. With its strong emphasis on faithful Bible teaching and discipleship, OCC fosters an environment where individuals can grow in their faith while feeling embraced by a diverse community. Many who have joined this church describe it as their spiritual sanctuary, highlighting its openness to the Holy Spirit and commitment to serving both the local area and beyond.
A wonderful church full of wonderful people who love God and the Community.. I and my family joined this Chirch just over four years ago because We believe God wanted us to be part of this Church and from the day we set our feet at The King Center, we have been blessed by ministry of the word of God delivered to us not only by Pastor Steve and leaders at OCC but also by A wide number of Ministers from all backgrounds including Africa, Asia and Poland to name but a few who all have shared God’s word through love, humility and meekness. As a family we have been accepted and appreciated. And we have developed good fellowship with some members at Church. Like any other relation, it takes both parties to work towards building a trusted relationship.. which over the years we have been working at developing such and one way I have involved myself a lot was to use my passion of cooking to bless others and I have participated in catering for a number of Functions at Church over the years.. and I remember vividly when I included Zimbabwean dishes which were enjoyed by many who gladly tried something new from other cultures. At OCC, like in any other church, giving of offering and tithes has been encouraged but the decision to take that faith to the next level and to owner God by way of Worship him through ‘Giving of Tithes and Offering’ has always been left to individuals members to make that personal free-will choice and decision as they feel convicted in that Area as they walk With God...As we felt home at OCC It has been a blessing to commit ourselves without feeling pressurised One way or the other.. Every Saturday evening our children have always looked forward to go to church the following morning and they’re usually the first to get ready and after the service they’re the last out the door.. (Except over the last few years when I have to take My daughter only while my husband takes our son to his football games which he prays that they would scheduled on Saturdays instead of Sunday Mornings) How happy was he when he started attending Youth meetings every Friday Evenings.. I remember one Friday when he cried because we couldn’t take him to the meeting. I had to assure him that it was beyond our control but we would always make an effort to drive him every Friday to the youth.. thus how much as children they feel loved and cared for at Church.. I remember a few weeks of him going to these Friday youth meetings, when we had a conversation with Mckaddesh about friendships and that it takes sometime to know everyone.. at the age of 12, he expressed that for him he was happy and content with those who have made friendships with him but also appreciated those he hasn’t Starting that they are really good people.. We were humbled by his way of thinking and positivity when he concluded the discussion by saying..”I go to church for one thing only.. that I may learn to know God.. I don’t have to be friends with everyone and in turn I don’t expect everyone to be my friends..As long as we all have Jesus as our friend thus all that matters and all that we seek after” Wise son.. I will conclude my review by saying that... God has brought us to Oxford Community Church and unless He says .. “You have tarried here for too long, break camp and advance to a place I shall show you..” We’re here to stay and serve our faithful Master, Lord and saviour in however way he desires of us.

The Holy Trinity Headington Quarry Anglican church is a beautiful and well-known location for C.S. Lewis' burial site. The church is known for its stained glass window which features scenes from the Chronicles of Narnia. It is a lovely place to visit and worth a stop if you're in Oxford!
The Grave of C. S. Lewis (author of the Chronicles of Narnia) and his brother, can be found here. Also located here is the Narnia Window. Installed in 1992 as a memorial to a brother and sister associated with the church. The window depicts scenes from Lewis’s much-loved Chronicles of Narnia.

C. S. Lewis’ grave is well marked, and the people in the church are incredibly welcoming. Each Tuesday (as of July 2025), they host a community café and even offered us a free coffee or tea. It was amazing to see their community in action!

Very wonderful to see and be in the church where CS Lewis worshipped his Lord and Saviour and where his physical remains are buried. One day, because of Christ's resurrection we all will be raised in His likeness and see Him face to face!

This is the local church attended by writer and scholar CS Lewis (d. 1962) and he is buried in the graveyard here. The church features the Narnia stained glass window inspired by his children's books. It is also where my mother attended church and where my parents were married.
Russell P — Google review
I don’t attend any services at Holy Trinity Church in Headington Quarry. I can’t remember ever going into the church. This review is solely about my personal reasons for visiting the grounds of the church. My maternal grandparents are buried here so I visit to keep their grave free from weeds and organic debris. I thought taking on this task would be a chore but I enjoy thinking about them, even though I didn’t know them and only saw my grandmother on her deathbed. It also tends to provoke thoughts about my parents and their lives in rural Oxford. The city must have been full of fields when they were teenagers. I also enjoy the graveyard’s wonderful trees and greenery and, beyond the cemetery’s stone wall boundary, the gentle slopes and treeline of Stansfeld Park. CS Lewis is buried in this graveyard but as I’ve never read anything he’s written I have nothing to say about him - other than that J R Tolkien’s grave is in another church on the other side of the city. I thought they knew each other, lived closely to each other, and were friends?

Churches & Cathedrals
Saint Mary Magdalen is a picturesque and historic parish church located near Martyrs Memorial in Oxford. It is an Anglican church with a warm and inclusive atmosphere, drawing a predominantly academic congregation. The church offers daily masses at specific times, with additional services on Sundays. With its rich history dating back to the Saxon era, the grade 1 listed building has undergone various rebuilds and renovations over the years, including work by renowned architect George Gilbert Scott.
A Saxon wooden church was built outside the Saxon walls of the city of Oxford, just beyond the North Gate. This church was burnt down in 1074, so Robert D'Oyly, the Norman Constable of Oxford, had single-aisle chapel built to replace it. In 1194 Saint Hugh, Bishop of Lincoln, had the church rebuilt. Work of that period survives in the east wall of the chancel wall and in the south aisle, and the altar dedicated to St Thomas Becket. By 1235 the church had an altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The chancel was rebuilt late in the 13th century. A century later the scholars of newly founded Balliol College had an oratory dedicated to St Catherine in the present north aisle. In 1320 the Carmelites founded a chapel in the south aisle, which survives as the present Lady Chapel. The west tower was built between 1511 and 1531. The south porch, with a room above it, was also added around this time. In 1841–42 the church was restored. The architects for the north or "Martyrs' Aisle" were George Gilbert Scott, then young and unknown, and his partner W. B. Moffatt. Scott and Moffatt also had the Norman arch to the chancel removed. The north aisle complemented Scott's Martyrs' Memorial just north of the church. It was the first Gothic Revival interior in Oxford. The architect for the restoration of the south aisle was Edward Blore. In 1874–75 the 13th-century chancel was altered by raising the floor before the altar and adding a screen, the windows of the west tower were opened into the church and the bells were re-hung. The architect for these works was William Wilkinson. The antiquary and biographer John Aubrey was buried in the churchyard.

A vibrant, warm, and inclusive Anglican church in the Catholic tradition. The congregation tends to skew academic, but the preaching is nevertheless accessible (and brief). There are two masses every day (12:15pm, 6pm), except on Sundays, when there are 3 (8am, 10:30am, 5.30pm).
