The Basilica of Notre-Dame-of-la-Garde at Marseille is a grand basilica located at the city's highest point, featuring a golden statue of the Virgin Mary by Lequesne. For those seeking a luxurious stay, there are options like the InterContinental Marseille and Sofitel Marseille Vieux Port with breathtaking views of the Old Port. Alternatively, visitors can opt for boutique accommodations such as Le Petit Nice Passedat or C2 Hotel for a more intimate experience.
The cathedral sits at the highest hill and point in the city. Multiple levels with a restaurant and cafe. The interior is beautifully designed with intricate details. The outside areas and decks of the cathedral offer panoramic views of Marseille, the Mediterranean Sea, and the surrounding landscape, and can clearly see Chateau D'if in the distance. There was construction 🚧 going on at the time we visited as well. A must visit for Marseilles, as it is the main attraction in the city and best part free entry.
Drew W — Google review
An absolute must-see in Marseille! The panoramic view from the top is breathtaking—offering a stunning 360° look over the city, sea, and surrounding hills. The basilica itself is beautiful, rich in history and architectural detail. Reaching the top can be a bit of a climb, but it’s well worth the effort. Whether you're religious or not, the atmosphere is peaceful and inspiring. Ideal for reflection, photography, or simply enjoying the view. A highlight of any trip to Marseille.
Ilox — Google review
Notre-Dame de la Garde is definitely a must-see in Marseille. The cathedral itself is stunning, and the panoramic views over the city are breathtaking, especially at sunset – it’s truly magical. The only downside was that I couldn’t pay in cash to enter the museum, which was a bit inconvenient. Otherwise, it was an amazing experience.
Youcef G — Google review
Quite a walk from the train station; the uphill climb is a duzy; my hubby is 70 and I'm 64. We made it , but it's a workout. The outside is being restored, so there were several places we couldn't go. Great views.
Doreen V — Google review
I really loved what I got to see. Unfortunately, the main part of the basilica was closed when I visited, and they were doing restoration on the Bonne Mère statue on top. The views from the basilica, however, were stunning and I loved seeing some history with the damaged walls from the liberation of Marseille during WWII.
Nancy D — Google review
Fantastic place to look out over the city. The church itself is also pretty, if you’re into that. It was a steep climb for us, up many steps, but worth it for the view! Very popular with tourists
Charlotte H — Google review
Beautiful Basílica and even better views of the area. Fascinating history as well. Take the tiny train up. Great little tour of the area and it’s easy.
Brandon-Dean M — Google review
A unique experience. The city itself amazed us, and when we got to the hill where the basilica is, in addition to seeing the whole city, everything that surrounds it, we also saw an unusual building that seems to be in the clouds. The golden statue of the Virgin Mary and the Child was being restored at the time of our visit, but this did not diminish the impression. The parking lot is at the foot, you can come by bus or tourist car, go around as much as you want and return by the next one (often departures are organized). You can buy souvenirs in a couple of places, the toilet is in the part you need to reach, but it's not far, just in a not so obvious place. Ask, they will guide you, if you don't know how. A lot of tourists are always expected, but not to the extent that it spoils the tour.

Palais Longchamp, a grand monument built in the mid-1800s, stands as a tribute to the completion of an impressive canal construction project in Marseille. The building's architecture combines Baroque, Roman, and Oriental styles and features a stunning sculpture fountain at its center. Visitors can explore the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Marseille and Le Museum d'Histoire Naturelle located within the palace complex.
Stunning palace in a nicer area of Marseille. Very scenic and picturesque as you're walking up. Lots of great photo opportunities and there's gardens and a playground at the top behind the pillars. Easy to access to via tram. Definitely don't miss this if you're in Marseille.
James — Google review
Easily one of the best sites to visit in Marseille and France as a whole. Interesting and valuable history, and fantastic grounds. The fountains are simply breathtaking. Palais Longchamp also has the Beaux-Arts Museum and The Museum of Natural History. So all-in-all a great place to spend the day.
Latham W — Google review
It's one of the beautiful historical architecture place I have visited. Beautiful for day spending.also I have seen people coming here to read books, paint and spent time with family and friends. And it holds an importance of how a city used to get water from river and this was a canal back in 16th-17th century. Built by Duke of Orleans. Beautiful and scenic
Vishal M — Google review
Mesmerizing and above all charming palace built by the instructions of Napoleon III. Great place for Instagram photos because of the gorgeous building architecture with an artificial waterfall under the statue. Two lovely fountains that are set in the small artificial lake are making you see the rainbows under the proper light conditions which certainly adds to the charm of this place. On one side of double sided stairs is a Natural history museum and on the other Museum of the Beautiful Arts which are a good-to-go places if you're visiting Marseille. Behind the structure is a lovely park and a metro and a bus station, so the place has a great connection to the other parts of the city with public transportation systems. My recommendation is to visit it during the afternoon hourse, and catch "a golden sun hour" cause seeing it at this time is certainly a remarkable expirience.
Ivana O — Google review
A beautiful monument which houses two museums: the Beaux-Arts and the Natural History Museum. The latter was small (free) but packed full of information on life and the earth. Great for kids but not only... The park itself was a little scruffy and neglected, notices indicated that it was undergoing an extensive restoration plan.
Catherine Y — Google review
I couldn't get into the museum due to lack of time, but I think it's one of the most beautiful places in this city!
Vanessa A — Google review
Gorgeous palace, walkable distance from the city center of Marseille. Completely free to explore their large garden and stand in awe of their beautiful fountain / waterfall. Worth a visit while staying in Marseille
RYAN — Google review
One of the best locations in the city. A must visit. A very nice view of the city. The foundation is an amazing and outstanding architectural masterpiece. The park inside is very peaceful and enjoyable. You can find two museums, a cantina and a old zoo simulation.

Cathédrale La Major is a grand 19th-century neo-Byzantine cathedral located in the historic Le Panier district of Marseille. Its exterior is a majestic blend of Byzantine and Romanesque styles, with green and white limestone covering the monument. The opulent interior features marble, mosaics, and murals that create a striking contrast to the outer surface.
We did not see this cathedral on the city's highlights must see location but was extremely impressed by it. The cathedral is huge, the decor and the small statues on the doors and pillars are so detailed they looked real. The inside was actually a lot bigger than it looked from the outside. A lady was singing a song when we walked in and just added to the ambience. There were so many statues of different poses and their details were just incredible and I was so memorized. The best part was that it was free to enter.
Drew W — Google review
Cathédrale La Major, built in the 19th. It’s a striking 19th-century Roman Catholic cathedral built in a Byzantine-Roman style, with alternating white and green stones giving it the striped look. Located near the Old Port and the Joliette district, it’s one of the largest cathedrals in France and a major landmark of the city.

What a beautiful cathedral! In a very nice area for sunsets, with a beautiful view over the sea with multiple restaurants close by. The cathedral is just stunning by it self with multiple small areas inside to pray and rest.

📍 Start Point: MuCEM / Fort Saint-Jean Bridge (Esplanade J4) Duration: 10 minutes • Begin your tour at the MuCEM plaza, right by the sea — it’s one of Marseille’s most scenic starting points. • Your guide introduces the area’s layered history: • The Old Port as Marseille’s trading heart since 600 BC. • The fortifications (Fort Saint-Jean) built by Louis XIV. • How this area became the cultural gateway with the MuCEM and La Major side by side. • Enjoy panoramic photos: MuCEM’s architecture, the sea, and the cathedral rising ahead. ⸻ 🚶‍♀️ Walk to Cathédrale La Major Duration: 5 minutes (400 m easy walk along the waterfront) • The guide points out the contrast between old and new Marseille — warehouses turned into cafés, the cruise port, and the open view toward the Frioul Islands. • Stop at the Teddy Bear statue (Ours Jayet 2020) for a quick fun photo and contemporary art reference. ⸻ 🕍 Main Stop: Cathédrale La Major – Exterior Tour Duration: 15 minutes • Your guide explains: • Built from 1852–1896 on the site of an earlier 12th-century Romanesque cathedral (some ruins still visible beside it). • The unique Neo-Byzantine style — alternating green and white limestone, domes inspired by St. Mark’s (Venice) and Hagia Sophia (Istanbul). • Symbolism: how Marseille, “Gateway to the Mediterranean,” influenced this East-meets-West design. • Photo tips: • Capture the façade head-on from the plaza for symmetry. • Include the harbour and MuCEM for a dramatic backdrop. ⸻ ⛪ Interior Visit Duration: 20 minutes • Step inside for a short but meaningful exploration. Your guide highlights: • The main nave (142 m long) — one of France’s largest. • The marble mosaic floor, multi-coloured stone pillars, and domed ceiling mosaics. • The main altar and choir, designed with imported marble from Italy and Tunisia. • The side chapels, each reflecting a different Mediterranean influence. • The crypt, where remains of the earlier cathedral and bishops of Marseille rest (if open). • Pause for reflection or quiet photography (no flash). ⸻ 🌅 Esplanade & Viewpoint Walk Duration: 10 minutes • Exit via the esplanade terrace overlooking the sea. • The guide points out: • The Old Port entrance (Vieux-Port). • Fort Saint-Jean and Notre-Dame de la Garde on the hill across the bay. • The evolving waterfront district of La Joliette and the modern “Les Docks.” • This is your panoramic photo moment — best at sunset or late afternoon. ⸻ ☕ End Point: Café or View Stop (optional) Duration: 5 minutes • End the tour at a nearby café on Boulevard Jacques Saadé or Les Terrasses du Port. • Your guide can suggest where to sit for the best harbour view or where to continue exploring on your own (Le Panier district or Fort Saint-Jean walkway). ⸻ 🎧 Notes for Organizing • Duration: 1 hour (efficient walking loop) • Total walking distance: ~1.2 km (flat terrain) • Languages: Most guides available in English, French, Spanish, or Italian. • Ideal time: 10 am (soft morning light) or 5–6 pm (sunset glow). • Meeting point: MuCEM main entrance or Esplanade J4. • Approx. cost: €10–15 per person for a small group tour (private guides €50–80/hour).

Cathédrale La Major is one of Marseille’s most striking landmarks — a grand 19th-century basilica that towers above the sea near the Old Port. Built in a bold Byzantine-Roman style with striped marble and elegant domes, it stands out beautifully against the Mediterranean backdrop. The interior is equally impressive, adorned with mosaics, marble columns, and vaulted ceilings that create a serene, majestic atmosphere. Its terrace also offers sweeping views over the harbor and Le Panier district. Both spiritual and architectural, La Major is a must-see gem that captures Marseille’s blend of faith, history, and grandeur.
Ivy N — Google review
The cathedral is located in a beautiful place. The view of the landscape around her is as spectacular as herself. From the outside it is grandiose, inside every fresco and statue will hold your attention, no matter what religion you are. A must visit and take some time to look around. We parked ten minutes' walk from it, but the city is well connected by metro lines. It is spacious and demanding to get around. Find out which type of tour suits you best.
Ana F — Google review
Walking up to Cathedral La Major in Marseille, I was immediately struck by its immense scale and the rich details of its architecture. The cathedral stands as a majestic blend of Romanesque Revival and Byzantine styles, a true testament to the city’s complex history and strong spirit. The two immense towers that frame its entrance reach upward, adding a dramatic silhouette against the Mediterranean sky. We arrived just as mass was concluding, which turned out to be a profoundly moving moment. Inside, a woman was singing in French alongside the majestic notes of the organ, creating a rich, ethereal ambiance that filled every corner of the vast space. The combination of her voice and the organic-like reverberations made the moment feel eternal, a pure expression of faith and artistry. The intricate mosaics, soaring arches, and lavish details made for a breathtaking experience, reflecting both the past and future of Marseille.

Fort Saint-Jean, a 17th-century fortress located at the entrance to the port of Marseille, offers visitors a chance to explore its historical significance and charming ancient architecture. Originally built by Louis XIV in 1660, the fort has been renovated and now features a bridge connecting it to Le Panier, Marseille's oldest neighborhood.
Amazing view. You can see the whole port and the Mediterranean sea. Very clean place. Lots of paths for walking. Entrance is free, so you can enjoy the location even just for a walk or to relax on a bench. There is one cafeteria inside the fort next to the exhibition building. The fort is connected with the Mediterranean museum by a bridge with amazing view. With the price of one ticket you can visit all the exhibitions. The cathedral across the street is also visible. One of the best locations in the city.

We stopped in Marseilles while on a long cruise thru the Mediterranean. We used Google maps to self guided our around the city. The major historic sites were very easy to fine, especially this old fort built in 1660. Very well maintained. Situated along the end of the beautiful promenade.
Perry H — Google review
The views are stunning. At the very top, surprise! There is a fragrant garden of aromatic herbs. Entry is free! The fortress itself is exciting to walk around. Some exhibitions are chargeable.
Andy C — Google review
You will certainly notice this place when you are nearby. The fort itself is free for visitors, there are 4 museums that are located here and there inside the fort. You can easily spend half a day here, the view is spectacular.
S.R. W — Google review
Absolutely stunning views. I had a great time walking around here. The cafe was also delicious and had lots of water. The gardens around the grounds were thoughtful with lots of places to sit. It was free to walk around.
Savana N — Google review
Built in 1660 by order of King Louis XIV, Fort Saint-Jean is one of the gems of Marseille. In my opinion, a must-see in Marseille. The views from the fort are breathtaking. Wonderful....
Piotr T — Google review
• Historic gateway to the Old Port: Built in the 17th century (1660) by King Louis XIV, Fort Saint-Jean guarded the entrance to the Vieux-Port — Marseille’s historic harbor — together with its twin, Fort Saint-Nicolas on the opposite side. • Symbolic location: Perched right at the mouth of the port, it’s a stunning mix of military history and panoramic views. From the ramparts you can see Notre-Dame de la Garde, the Vieux-Port, and the open sea. • Architectural blend: Medieval tower foundations, classical bastions, and 21st-century walkways (linking to the MuCEM – Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations) make this one of the most atmospheric sites in Marseille. • Cultural revival: Since 2013, Fort Saint-Jean has been part of the MuCEM complex, beautifully restored and open to visitors — with gardens, exhibition spaces, and terraces. The modern footbridge connecting the fort to MuCEM is itself a local icon. • Photo heaven: The stone fort, blue sea, and sweeping city backdrop make it one of the most photographed spots in the city. Sunset views here are breathtaking.
Amrit D — Google review

Wildlife refuge
Parc national des Calanques, established in 2012, is a stunning natural reserve located in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region. Encompassing both land and sea areas, it spans over 8,500 hectares of land across Marseille, Cassis, and La Ciotat, along with 43,500 hectares of marine territory. This park boasts remarkable biodiversity with numerous protected terrestrial and marine species.
If you are here for tourism, you should definitely check this place. There are so many trekking points. And what a beautiful path! You will definitely fall in love with this place.

I can highly recommend climbing the Massif Marseilleveyre if you're into hiking. Steep climb, but astounding views of virtually the entirety of Marseille and surrounding Calanque. The unique limestone landscape was really cool, great for photography

No fire, no smoking and no litter please ! Gemstone water at the foot of dizzy white cliffs. A good physical condition is better since you may need at minimum about 1h of walking one way from the parking to the beach. Check on the internet if the path is open, it closes on dry and windy times to limit wildfire risks and you need a reservation (free) during summer. You can also choose to dive there, which is a great way to see the Mediterranean fishes near Riou, where fishing is prohibited.
Paul A — Google review
Stunning place, rugged mountain cliffs perched above the mediteranean. Hiked the red-white trail from les Baumettes to Cassis, aprox 25km. Tough terrain, sometimes became quite exposed, not your average walk in the park, attention to the path and markings is key. Losing or missing a sign can lead you to the middle of nowhere. Bring plenty of water.
Gabriel F — Google review
Visiting the Calanques National Park was an absolutely sublime experience. The turquoise waters are breathtaking, and the way the sea crashes against the mountains creates a powerful, almost overwhelming sensation. I had the chance to discover it on a yacht, which made the experience even more unique and luxurious, allowing me to fully enjoy the hidden coves and majestic cliffs. The contrast between the crystal-clear sea, the bright limestone rocks, and the calm Mediterranean atmosphere is unforgettable. A true natural wonder that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Marseille.

Beautiful national park on the Mediterranean coast. We were here rock climbing for a week. You could stay here a year and never do the same 2 climbs. So much to explore and climb. Incredible rock and views. Definitely do the 6 pitch 5.10a Arete de Marseille. Some of the more popular climbing areas are a little slick from wear. Still, worth it and highly recommend for a climbing trip!!

Well maintained national park with lots of properly marked hiking options! Good cliff diving experience can be gained at the calanque d’en Vau, for the adrenaline seekers! Pack a lot of water (minimum 2 ltrs per person) and supplies because one you leave from Parking du loggison, there’s no water source, ANYWHERE!!

One of favourite places in marseille. Very relaxing and quiet. Suitable to take a walk, or a quick run. Kids will love the ducks, otters, and the other birds that roam freely in their natural habitat. They have small play areas for smaller kids. The views are beautiful.

A wonderful park to take a walk. Nice that they have a botanical garden that you can access by scanning a qr code to make an appointment to visit for free. Sad that the rose garden has no flower 🌹. Still early to see them.

This parc is amazing. It has a lot to offer. You can walk through and admire the views over the sea. The castle on top of the hill is also worth a visit. The Botanical Garden as well is very beautiful.

The best part is ..... there are no dog poos !! There are many unusual trees from different parts of the world that were planted a long time ago. Some have their names on them. It's a good place to take your kids, especially to teach them how to ride a bicycle. It does get busy at weekends and during school holidays. Springtime is probably a good season to stroll around as you can enjoy all the new flowers. There's also a rose garden worth visiting.

This charming inlet features colorful sea captains' cabins, traditional fishing boats, and a cluster of buildings that cascade down to the water's edge. It offers a glimpse into the city's maritime heritage and provides stunning views of the sunset. The area is home to several renowned restaurants serving bouillabaisse, including the Michelin-starred Epuisette and the historic Chez Fonfon.
Gorgeous little corner! One of the bars makes proper espresso coffee too. Clean and lovely to visit. To one side is access to the sea where I would start my swim back to plage des Catalans. Kid friendly around that part and great for adults to venture out.

Charming harbor in the downtown This place deserves a visit. Quite close to the old port (shorter than 30’ walking), you’ll find a charming harbor seemingly entering deep in the downtown. You can walk along the wharfs enjoy a glass or a nice dinner. If you go on 150 meters on the right side you’ll reach the seafront with a nice view on the bay, especially at sunset. Do not try to get very close by car, it’s almost impossible to park.

Visiting Vallons des Aufons, the charming fishing village in Marseille, was an absolutely fantastic experience. Nestled along the picturesque coast, this little place radiates an authentic and welcoming atmosphere that left a lasting impression. Strolling through its quaint streets, I was captivated by the genuine warmth of the locals and their rich fishing traditions, the aroma of grilled fish wafted from seaside restaurants, tempting my taste buds.

A small and traditional fishing village, born just below a viaduct, in the 19th century. It is located along the Kennedy Corniche, the splendid promenade named after the American president, which rises just outside the Old Port and the center of Marseille. it is possible to admire the small pastel-colored fishermen's houses, the lined up boats, all colored and the water with a thousand shades as a frame. A truly fascinating and evocative place. Undoubtedly among the most picturesque in the city. if you want to take a postcard photo you have to pop into this little gem. you can reach it on foot or by city bus.

Beautiful hidden port with scenic views. Great place to eat at a restaurant or simply stroll around. The area includes the beautiful 3 arched Pont des Auffes, a bridge built in the 19th century, and the Porte d'orient, a monument commemorating an army that fought alongside the allied power in the first world war.

The Palais du Pharo, constructed in 1858 for Napoleon III, now serves as a grand conference center with picturesque gardens that overlook the seafront. The palace's exceptional architecture and historical significance make it a notable landmark visible from the Vieux-Port. Its elevated position offers breathtaking views of the city's monuments, including Fort Saint-Jean, Mucem, and Cathedrale de la Major.
We did not enter the palace but spent a few lovely hours sitting in different areas around the palais to take best advantage of all the views. The park was full of families enjoying themselves in a very relaxed atmosphere. Wonderful time.

This place is a hidden gem, perfect for a relaxing stroll along the Vieux Port. You can enjoy the lively scene as boats come and go from Marseille Port. There’s plenty of seating, especially towards the Vieux Port entrance. The landscape is stunning, and there’s a beautiful garden. You could even plan a picnic or a casual get-together with friends and family. I haven’t been inside, but it’s always a great spot if you need a peaceful escape.

an amazing spot to visit in Marseille! The palace itself is beautiful, but the real highlight is the breathtaking view over the Vieux-Port and the Mediterranean Sea. It’s a perfect place to take photos and enjoy the panoramic scenery. The gardens are peaceful and well-kept, making it a great place for a relaxing stroll or a picnic. If you're looking for a mix of history, architecture, and incredible views, this spot shouldn’t be missed!

Perfect place to relax and discover the wonderful art it has to offer. 3 exhibitions at the time of my visit, each one better than the last. The staff was very attentive and friendly. Definitely a place you can't miss if you visit Marseille.

One of my favourite places in Marseille. I arrived with my 7 month old and a pram at a time the lifts were unfortunately not working. The reception staff were lovely and leant me a carrier. Such thought provoking interesting exhibitions. Great food too & so many cultural events to explore. I will definitely return.

Best place I’ve been in Marseille! From when u enter the building u catch these super good vibes! People are chilling around, doing sports or dancing and none seems to notice you’re visiting. They’re just there living their lives and enjoying. The bistrot isn’t that cheap and for an italian that thing they serve can’t be called pizza for sure 😂 but the atmosphere does it all. There’s a menu of the day with veg and vegetarian food, there’s wine, there’s good music. ATTENTION: The terrace isn’t always open!

Sometimes one finds a hidden gem out of surprise in the middle of nowhere near to the expectations. This is one of the such places. I was invited there for an interesting exhibition on ‘Digital Art’ by the artist Mr. Ugo. Key points to remember for me. 1. This place is adjacent to Marseille Saint Charles station. An old, ghostly looking structure having several halls. It has restaurants and skateboarding arena as well. Surprising for me as I didn’t know this even though I am quite regular at the station. 2. This unused place is now being using in such an artistic manner while keeping its rustic look maintained. One could feel that vibe. 3. The design and artistic look created by several artists have made this place an experience in itself. 4. The food at the grande tables restaurant is amazing. Must try. Now the services. It has ample parking spaces. Reasonably priced. Reasonable ticket prices for different exhibits.

Found this place by accident and it was a pleasant surprise! The Massif des Calanques is a stunning national park located along the Mediterranean coast, stretching from Marseille to Cassis. Accessible primarily by boat, it offers breathtaking views of rugged cliffs and coastline. The park features deep rocky coves with clear waters nestled among limestone cliffs, providing opportunities for water sports like kayaking and paddle boarding. Visitors can also explore underwater cave inscriptions and enjoy guided boat tours or private rides to fully experience the area's natural beauty.
This national park provides amazing hikes to see crystal clear water and amazing cliff sides. As you stand and gaze through the picturesque landscape you will marvel at scenery typically seen in books or travel brochures. This is a must see if visiting Marseille.

My boyfriend and I did an incredible 17km hiking loop passing through Calanques d’en Vau starting from Cassis (picture attached of our route, listed as a trail running route found on Kamoot). Absolutely stunning hike which is WELL worth the effort! The natural park feels and is completely unspoilt due to no car access etc. A MUST if you are anywhere near this area :)

Nature here is amazing. I had some difficulties to find the right path, without google maps was impossible and not always very clear. However, if you like to walk and/or hike, this place is for you. Cristal water and small beaches, we went end july and not a lot of people. Of course you need to be lucky (like anywhere) that the few people you have are not loud. We took the tellow path. This one is not suitable for kids! But hey, it’s nature!:) A bit sad that in the sea you can se a lot of boats but then the park is closed to the public. Environmentally the impact of boats is way higher then just people walking. However, it was a great experience.

This is easily one of the coolest parks I've been to. It's absolutely beautiful with plenty of well-marked hiking trails. There's also plenty of climbing areas, some of which require far-from-obvious trails that require scrambling or rappelling at times. Rarely, you'll find chains at the extremely scrambly sections.

At the heart of Merseille, it is both terrestrial and marine: it is the only national park in Europe to be periurban and, in the Mediterranean. It is a nice short escape from busy city life. Get a ticket from Old port. They have 2.15 hours and 3.5 hours two different journey schedule. Ticket cost 32 and 38 euros. If you want swimming or stopping more extra.

Abbaye Saint-Victor is a fortified abbey in Marseille, founded by St. Cassian and built over a 5th-century crypt housing his sarcophagus. The abbey has a rich history dating back to the first century, with ties to French soldier turned martyr Victor of Marseilles. Over the years, it has served as both an abbey and a fort, playing various roles throughout its history.
Beautiful and mystic place with lovely, helpful people running it. It's the birthplace of Christianity in Marseille, set up by Marie Magdalene, Martha and Lazarus, in person. This is a real place of pilgrimage which transports you back in time. I will hopefully return one day.

Without question my favorite spot I visited! Suchan amazing authentic feel! Even a bit damp feeling, as you've likely imagined in books and movies about the period, not fancy but beautiful and again far more authentic feeling than St Peter's Basillica and the like.
Tom — Google review
The church is beautiful, but the crypt is a must see. Marseille's past is hidden underground, and this journey to the 5th century takes you back to late antiquity and the earliest medieval period. I saw the world through different eyes after meditating on these artifacts from a distant past.
Noel B — Google review

D K — Google review
This is worth a visit just to go down to the crypt. It was 3 euros to enter the crypt, and worth it. It has a fascinating history. And the areas of the crypt are well documented and explained. It was hard to believe that there is a huge church above it.The church itself is also beautiful.
Michelle B — Google review
One of Marseille’s most atmospheric and historically rich landmarks. Dating back to the 5th century, this ancient abbey overlooks the Old Port and offers a peaceful escape from the city’s bustle. Its dark stone walls, Romanesque architecture, and hauntingly beautiful crypts—home to early Christian sarcophagi and relics—create a truly mystical ambiance. The abbey also provides lovely views of the harbor from its upper terrace. A visit here feels like stepping back in time, making it a must-see for history lovers and those seeking the spiritual heart of Marseille.

History Museums
Marseille History Museum is a treasure trove of the city's 2,600-year history. With over 44,000 exhibits, this educational museum offers a journey through the country's past. From Roman ruins to artifacts from the Middle Ages and ancient history, visitors can explore Marseille's rich heritage for a nominal fee. The museum opened in 1983 and is the first of its kind in France.
I got a chance to visit I the museum for free and I am very glad. It’s one of the most interesting approach to show the marine history of the city through such ship installations I have ever seen. Several levels of the museum guide you through its history. I was a bit disappointed that the latest history (1970s) is not yet available
Kirill M — Google review
In a city that is rich in history, it was very rewarding to find a well planned and presented museum. Enter the grounds through the park (not the shopping mall) to see the layout of the ancient port. Excavated walls and buildings are described on plaques to help visualize. Inside you will proceed from earliest archeological finds to modern day. The modern day presentation is poor and lacking but that isn't why you should go to a history museum, is it. Early on you'll encounter the remains of two ancient ships along with video presentations that can be heard through earphone devices available at the entrance. Models have been build to demonstrate how the ship looked when it was in use. The videos include how it was used, the importance of them to ancient Marseille, and the process of discovering and protecting them. The museum is broken into stages that each have a marker showing the dates and most important events. At each stage, there is an audio and sometimes video explanation to add to the exhibits.
Thomas W — Google review
I enjoyed my visit to Marseille's History Museum, displays are laid out thoughtfully and with plenty of space to move around. I especially enjoyed the models of the excavation sites, and the displays of the tombs. It was a little confusing about where to go, I went up the ramp and into the Mall, and then I had to figure out how to get into the Museum! Maybe more signs outside would help.
Eileen W — Google review
Entrance is free so that is always nice. The exhibition is somewhat interesting and quite diverse. Some exhibits were missing and there were no captions in English, but overall a nice place to visit. I would not say it is a must visit, but if you have some time to kill go ahead.
Gerard P — Google review
This museum presents a history of human occupation of the site of the city of Marseille. Visiting gives you a great context for exploring and enjoying the city. It's amazing to recognize the shape of the harbor and see it reoccur in so many paintings, prints, maps, and models. The ruins of the Greek and Roman harbor are in a large fenced area included with the museum. The museum itself contains the remains of boats from that period. When we visited there were also temporary exhibits that added to appreciation of the city, one on photography and another on the game of petanque. Interestingly the museum also opens into an adjustment shopping mall.
Josh — Google review
Really enjoyed this museum. For a museum without an entry free, with well translated audio guides in English, this was an incredible experience. There is so much effort put in well documenting the entire history of Marseille throughout the museum. We were absolutely delighted spend over 2 hours of informative stories, activities & other engagements. The staff was kind & polite. I would highly recommend it!
Aakanksha S — Google review
Free entry. Large museum. A lot of history. Boat ruins, stones, pottery, etc. Glad I went. Oh, btw, you can exit into a shopping mall if you choose to. Friendly people at the front desk. They even offered to put my small backpack in a locker and gave me the key to retrieve it. Photography was allowed but no flash.

This one was definitely a surprise! I visited because I ran out of things to do while in Marseille and the ticket was free. Considering I usually don't like archological museums, this one really exceeded my expectations. The informations are delivered with well made and detailed audioguides and videos: it is quite a shame that at the time of my visit most of them were under repair. Overall I wouldn't say it's a must, but it's definitely an underrated museum.

On Monday evenings, there aren’t many places open for dinner in Marseille. We ended up here by chance on a rainy day, following a bartender’s recommendation. From the outside, it looks like a small bar, but inside, it’s more spacious and even has a little garden. More than anything, this cozy spot serves incredibly delicious dishes from its kitchen. We returned here two years after our first/only visit and were pleased that we did. Our outdoor seat was shared from the early afternoon sun and we spent a very pleasurable time over a relaxed lunch. A starter of spinach/feta/pine nuts in filo pastry was very good but the star really was the beef tartare with frites. A cool rosé kept our food company before finishing with a coffee. Service was superb from both servers. Next time we’re in Marseille we’ll come back. Thank you!

Hot damn! Whoever was running this kitchen on this hot summer night (18th June '22) is a true pro. It was the best meal we had all through our 10 day France trip and we were full after it. Best grilled fish filet I ever had. So glad we decided to try this restaurant for our last night, if we had more time I would've come back to try the lamb dish. Also very good music and a cosy atmosphere.

This amazing restaurant/bar may be crowded in the front, but don't be deterred to head towards the back where there are usually tables free for diners. The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Marseille is housed in the magnificent Palais Longchamps, a stunning building with an impressive marble frontage and beautiful surroundings. The museum features a vast collection of European art from the 16th to 18th centuries, including works by renowned baroque artist Pierre Puget. Visitors can admire French and Spanish paintings, as well as medieval manuscripts, books, statues, and sculptures.
I really enjoyed the exhibit of swim fashions – – there are some really playful costumes here. This museum houses an extraordinary collection of porcelain and antique glass, which might be a snooze for some visitors but I found it fascinating. The delicacy in artistry displayed is abundant. The museum itself is quite impressive— be sure to tour the antique rooms here.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Marseille is a true gem for art enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. As someone deeply connected to the world of art, my visit to this museum was nothing short of inspiring. From the moment I stepped through its doors, I was enveloped in a world of creativity and expression, surrounded by masterpieces that spoke to the soul. The museum's extensive collection, featuring works by esteemed artists such as Pierre Puget, Eugène Delacroix, and Gustave Courbet, offers a rich tapestry of artistic brilliance spanning various periods and styles. Each brushstroke, each sculpture, tells a story of passion, skill, and vision, forging a deep connection with the viewer. Exploring the museum's galleries, I found myself immersed in a dialogue with art, each piece stirring emotions and igniting my imagination. From classical masterpieces to contemporary creations, the museum's diverse exhibitions showcase the breadth and depth of human creativity, reminding me of the universal language that transcends time and culture. In conclusion, my visit to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Marseille was not just a journey through art history, but a profound experience that resonated with my own artistic sensibilities. It's a place where passion meets creativity, and where the spirit of art comes alive, leaving an indelible mark on the heart and mind of every visitor.

Was a bit surprised that the tickets were for free, considering the nice art pieces displaying there! We went there on a Sunday morning, it was a nice amount of people there, not crowded. The museum is also a nice size, not big so you can easily combine this visit with other things.

On saturday our first day in Maseille we discovered this place and wanted to just roam around but the curator for a free music program invited us for the party at night. So afterr taking a couple of hours walk around the city we came back and danced and had fun to the sounds of Rumba De Boda. The next day (today) was the first sunday of the month so we were able to visit both museum of fine arts and natural history for free. I cannot really express how many art pieces sunned there. Inspiring for my own work. Tickets are normally 45 for fine arts museo and 3 for natural story. Today s also the last day of national geography's photo exhibition above the museum of natural history. Outside peripheries Are magnificent and exceptional in many ways. The architecture is not "unique" in the sense that it seems like greek inspired baroque style but the layout is impressive from every side you see it. It is a hub that attracts people of the community from.all age groups. Certainly recommend pending a few hours here at least.

The Musée d’Archéologie Méditerranéenne, also known as the Mediterranean Archaeology Museum, is a captivating museum situated in the heart of Marseille within the Vieille Charite. The museum's permanent exhibition is centered around Egyptian and classical antiquities from the Mediterranean and Near East. Housed in a historic building, it offers beautifully curated collections that showcase the cultural heritage of these regions during antiquity.
It's worth the visit for the beautiful Architecture alone but here you have at least 4 exciting collections. All free entry! Egyptology. Small is beautiful. The votive objects here are as lovely as I ever saw in London or Paris. Amerindian. African. Oceanian(Particularly Vanuatu). Folk art from Mexico. Sunday morning is quiet. Enjoy!

Small but fairly comprehensive archeology department, with nice exhibits from iron age Italy, Etruria, Greece and Cyprus, as well as some Near Eastern pieces from Susa and Khorsabad. Impressive photo exhibition on Syria, with images from before the destruction. Sadly the Egypt exhibition as well as the ethnographical sections of the museum were closed at the time of my visit, without further explanation.

Great little collection of Egyptian and Roman artifacts. Gorgeous building! Nice that it's for free!

I have never felt so unwelcome at any museum. Gangs of staff guarding the exhibition rooms with some of them thinking it’s okay to yell at visitors. Very unpleasant. Much better off visiting the Marseille History Museum, especially as you are not expected to carry a wriggly baby in your arms there and allowed to use a stroller (in contrast to this museum where it’s considered a danger to the exhibitions apparently 🙄).

Gorgeous architecture, even if you are not really into archeology, come and enjoy the place!

L'Ombrière de Norman Foster is a striking polished steel canopy located at Quai des Belges, on the eastern edge of Marseille's harbor. Designed by renowned architect Sir Norman Foster, this flexible events pavilion offers an open and reflective space for visitors to enjoy. The structure's unique design creates captivating reflections as people walk underneath, making it a popular spot for Instagram-worthy photos.
The mirrored ceiling is a perfect place to make a kind of "Inception" effect, or to take you own photograph from a top-view.
Burçin A — Google review
A cool installation that really enhances the port itself. 🌟 Marseille truly stands out with its fisheries and sailing culture, so the port is definitely one of its most defining features. ⚓️ ‼️I’d personally recommend keeping a close eye on your belongings, though — pickpocketing is quite common here, especially since the port is so close to the city centre.‼️
Matúš M — Google review
• Designed by the renowned architect Norman Foster (with Michel Desvigne / Tangram) and completed in 2013 as part of the regeneration of the Vieux‑Port de Marseille. • The structure is impressive in scale: approximately 22 × 48 m (or in some sources 46 × 22 m) of polished stainless-steel canopy raised about 6 m above the ground. • Function and aesthetic in one: it serves as a shelter from sun/rain above the fish market / quay area, but also as a mirror-ceiling that reflects the harbour, the people beneath, the cityscape, creating very striking visual effects. • Easy access for visitors: Located on the Quai de la Fraternité / Quai des Belges, just at the Old Port. Walking distance from major landmarks and transport. • A vivid photo-spot: Many visitors comment on how fun and unique it is to stand underneath and watch the reflections, take photographs of the mirrored underside.
Amrit D — Google review
Installed in 2013, L'Ombrière—meaning "shade canopy"—is a striking mirrored structure designed by Norman Foster. It serves both as a functional shelter, protecting pedestrians from sun and rain, and as a contemporary urban landmark symbolizing the city’s regeneration and commitment to public art. The canopy’s reflective underside creates a unique visual experience by mirroring the ground, sky, surrounding buildings, and passersby, turning everyday activity into a living spectacle.
Seokjin H — Google review
I like this. After see the harbour coming up from the subway I saw this. It's a "WOW" sort of site. I looked up information on it and it's limited. At Quai des Belges, the prominent eastern edge of the harbour, a dramatic blade of reflective stainless steel will shelter a flexible new events pavilion. Open on all sides, its 46 metre (150.91feet) by 22 metre (72.17 feet) canopy is supported by slender pillars & the canopy’s polished, mirrored surfacereflects visitors walking underneath reflecting the surrounding port and tapers towards the edges, minimising its profile and reducing the structure’s visual impact it was designed by Norman Foster.
G L — Google review
It is a noise place, the sound produced by the movement of air through the port, a lots people there, and high traffic place.
Ngân N — Google review
Interesting installation. No one wants to miss the opportunity for a selfie from the top. I give it a 4 star as I preferred it without the sunflowers.

Calanque de Sormiou is a breathtaking gem nestled within the stunning Calanques National Park, renowned for its vibrant turquoise waters and dramatic landscapes. As the largest and most accessible cove in the park, it offers visitors an unforgettable day trip experience. The journey to this picturesque spot involves navigating through the charming Baumettes district and embarking on a scenic 45-minute hike down winding paths that lead to its beautiful pebble beach framed by striking white limestone cliffs.
An intermediate trek leading to a beautiful destination. The effort is totally worth the dive into the water.. Can get very crowded at peak season. A must visit from Marseille !
Girish S — Google review
We went in mid-October and the beach had certainly been recently impacted by a storm. There was a yacht which had run aground very dramatically, and more importantly the beach was covered in sticks, leaves, and other debris blown in by the storm and did not leave much sand uncovered to sit on. Nonetheless the location is spectacular and the water was gorgeous and clear for a swim. We paid €6 to drive down and park. Apparently it is wise to call ahead to the restaurant to reserve a space in peak tourist season.
Keelan C — Google review
Nice view, but the road right to the beach closes during the day during peak season for cars so you have to hike down about 45 minutes each way. We had to wait till 7pm to drive down, the road is quite treacherous, steep with cliffs and single lane in most parts. If you do drive down just pay attention to what cars are coming up ahead and prepare to stop early to give way
Ian K — Google review
Outstanding beach with beautiful warm turquoise waters. You need to walk 45 mins over a hill each way to get there but it’s worth it. Apparently the restaurant is amazing but we didn’t book ahead which is necessary.
A L — Google review
I went by foot after taking the bus 22. It was a nice 25 min walk, even under a blazing sun. Since the path has a few trees, it is not that hot. It is not so easy to find the starting point, but once you are there, it’s easy to follow. Great views and nature along the path. The beach itself, very calm. Light waves, the soil is sand, no rocks, great temperature.
Hugo I — Google review
Amazing place, in summer it’s super nice, the water it’s crystal clear. It’s worth of it, nothing the envy to Thailand’s beaches. The bad thing is to arrive there, by walk it’s hard, and you can’t get by car unless you have a reservation in the restaurant.
Kam R — Google review
It is the most beautiful calanque that you can find in the national park. You need, however, to be cautious that, especially, in summer calanques are closed for visits due to fire risks (including windy days). It is better to start the hike at 7 am so you will be less tired and protected from the sun by a shade of calanques. The reward is wonderful - amazing sea view and sandy beach.
ISole — Google review
Difficult to get there, but it's worth it! We went in a cab until the beginning of the mountain and walked for around 40 minutes. Make sure to wear a hat, and comfortable shoes and to bring water. It gets crowded after 1PM so it's better to arrive around 9-11 AM

Calanque de Morgiou, a picturesque inlet with a rich history as a fishing port, offers various activities such as rock climbing, hiking, and swimming. Accessible by foot or car via a vertiginous pass, it's important to check access conditions beforehand due to strict regulations. The small pebble beach provides easy access to the clear waters of the calanque, although finding space can be challenging due to its popularity.
We took a hike about 2km each way. Took our large dog with us, she did walked it all, but some parts are covered with large slippery stones. The signage could be more clear, as so many people were a bit lost there, but once you figure it out, then it all makes sense! Take definitely water with you!! When you get to the village, there is one restaurant and they sell water and drinks.
Quayside P — Google review
Great spot to swim, the hike down was not super long, however make sure you have shoes with a grip as the rocks climbing down are very smooth and slippery! There was a part near the beach with a chain/rope to help climb down the steep spot. Water is very salty but not cold. Lovely dock area at the beach,
Nicole — Google review
One of the most popular hikes in the calanques links two of the biggest - Sormiou and Morgiou - with the climb over the Crete de Morgiou. Here you can take a pause, enjoy the sun, have a swim or have a lunch or a coffee in the only restaurant - le Bar Nautic. Views are just breathtaking.
Gleb — Google review
The view it’s impressive, the hike was difficult but worth it. Unfortunately we were not prepared with water shoes , so was uncomfortable because of the stones on the beach and in the water . The water was freezing but amazingly clear and clean.
Adina M — Google review
Very beautiful!! Can be a long hike depending on your entrance. Going from Les Baumettes is a nicer hike but longer. There is also a part that is quite steep. Luminy entrance is shorter distance but you don’t see as much on the hike. No reservation needed. Overall, no matter your hiking route it is worth the effort. Water is crystal clear and can be a bit cold but it is just what you want after a sweaty hike.
Bilin C — Google review
Amazing views! Trekking shoes are strongly recommended because the path is full of slippery stones and quite steep. But the scenery is definitely worth it. The beach is pretty small and there were many jellyfish in the water today so we didn’t try bathing there.
Bararich8 — Google review
The small beaches here are great. One of them is with small pebble-stones, the other beach is just stone with pebble entrance to the sea. You have to come early tho, if you want to swim alone. Because of it is small, it gets full quickly. You have to park 3,5 km (car) away from this calanque, only the locals can get through the gates. So you have to walk on partly-walkingroutes that can take up to 30 min (maybe 2,8 km). You have hiking routes that can take you to great spots to take pictures. Tips: Go early Take (light) shoes you can swim with Big bottle of water Shoes for hiking (if you want to hike) Goggles (you can see small fishes swimming around your legs, we saw even an octopus) A bientot !
Bünyamin D — Google review
A very nice Calanque. Beautiful. If you come with your own sailing boat, you are likely to anchor at 15 m dept. In summer there will be many boats at anchor and it can feel crowded. Also during the day there is a continued stream of day tripper boats, which is very annoying. Thus I only give 4 stars.

A striking example of urban regeneration, the space transforms Marseille’s historic port warehouses into a vibrant hub of culture, shopping, and gastronomy. Originally constructed between 1858 and 1863 as part of the city’s industrial harbor infrastructure, the complex spans 365 meters in length—symbolizing the days of the year—and features four warehouse blocks across seven stories, evoking the days of the week. After decades of underuse, major redevelopment efforts began in the 1990s. In 2015, the lower 15,000 square meters were reopened as a lifestyle destination, blending heritage architecture with contemporary design. It stands as one of Europe’s most acclaimed examples of adaptive reuse and waterfront revitalization.

The worst chicken I have ever tried. Not well cooked, the taste was horrible, overloaded with garlic. The service was awful. A young long hair guy tried to take our payment, for some reason he called an older gray hair man, to took the payment. He was extremely rude. I was with 2 friends he made us feel he just wanted to get rid of us. He almost broke my credit card on the way he swiped it. We didn’t have the chance to explain the food was not properly cooked. The seating area looks nice and we thought we will have a good meal, big mistake, huge. Inside the Asian cooking area there were flies on top of the food. And the cost of the food was overpriced for the bad quality and horrible service. We donate our money to this place, we just ate the tomatoes. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. Beyond bad.

One of the best meals I have ever had. Even though my plate doesn’t seem so special, I have never tried this combination of tastes, which is divine, and the vegetables are so good, fresh or perfectly cooked! They have multiple choices, pizza of all sorts, salads, seafood, salmon, vegetables and fruits of all kinds, desserts, but everything seems to be out of the ordinary though, in terms of recipes and combinations, it’s all so tasteful! Absolutely love this place, the food, the terrace, the ambiance, the fact that it’s localized right next to Cathédrale la Major.

Highly recommend! First of all, the staff was truly accommodating. We don't speak French, wish we knew more languages, but the staff who spoke some English were very helpful and kind! They really made our experience so enjoyable! This place is very unique, there is multiple stations inside. 1. They hand your party a number when you first walk in. 2. Then you go to each station: bar, seafood, charcuterie, burgers/sandwiches, Thai, dessert and order anything you would like and show your number. 3. Pick a table inside or outside and display your number. 4. Your drinks and food will be delivered to you. 5. Before you leave, show your number to the bar and pay. Each station provides their menu, prices and either pictures or plates on display. About a 20 minute walk from the Vieux point and definitely worth it! Get our of the tourist trap and experience the culture on locals of Marseille! Bonjour and merci <3

Certainly not cheap but great selection of varied options.. if it seems confusing - walk inside and get a number, walk around the various stations to order with said number and a server will bring your choices out to you, and take your drink order.. pay at the same counter that you received the number once you have finished.. The tartare plate was good but the pizza with anchovies was superlative - the red sauce was very delicious, no cheese required..!

Marseille's Old Port, also known as Vieux Port, holds centuries of history and cultural significance. Established by the Phoenicians around 600 BC, it thrived as a hub for Mediterranean trade and was later integrated into the Roman Empire. The port's forts, Saint-Nicolas and Saint-Jean, stand as guardians with a rich medieval past. Visitors can explore historical buildings from various periods in PACA, including well-preserved Roman structures like amphitheaters and baths.
Don’t miss this place if you visit Marseille in the first time. I visited late June when the summer starts and the temperature is about 33+c during day time. There are seafood restaurants, cafe, Asian restaurants around so you can take some walks and have lunch or dinner.

The Old Port of Marseille is the vibrant heart of the city — a lively mix of history, culture, and seaside charm. Surrounded by cafes, seafood restaurants, and colorful boats, it’s the perfect place to soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere. From here, you can watch fishermen sell their daily catch, admire the reflections of historic buildings in the water, or hop on a boat to explore the Calanques. The area comes alive at sunset, when the light turns golden and locals gather along the quays. Whether for a morning stroll or an evening aperitif, the Vieux-Port is the soul of Marseille.

Catherine Y — Google review
The port is the historic and symbolic heart of the city. Originally established around 600 BCE as the harbor of the ancient Greek colony of Massalia, it later became a strategic center for Mediterranean trade and military operations during the Roman Empire. Throughout the Middle Ages and early modern period, the port was a key departure point for Crusaders and a hub for maritime commerce. It underwent significant redevelopment in the 18th century. Although most commercial and industrial port functions moved to the newer Grand Port Maritime in the 1840s, the port has remained a vital civic and historical focal point. Today, it serves primarily fishing boats, private yachts, sightseeing cruises, and ferry services. The semi-circular waterfront is lined with Provençal-style buildings, terrace cafés, restaurants, and shops. It becomes especially atmospheric at sunset.
Seokjin H — Google review
The Vieux-Port of Marseille is truly the heart of the city—vibrant, historic, and full of life. Whether you're walking along the harbor, watching fishing boats come and go, or enjoying a coffee at one of the many cafés, the atmosphere is unforgettable. The views are stunning, especially at sunset when the sky reflects beautifully over the water. Street performers, local markets, and the iconic Notre-Dame de la Garde in the background make it even more magical. It’s the perfect starting point for exploring Marseille and soaking in its rich Mediterranean charm.

It's all going on at the Vieux Port. Le Bateau to visit the Frioul islands, La Navette to get to Point Rouge and L'Estaque, restaurants, museums, the Panier, the Citadel, shopping, the excellent reflective roof, fish market, you get it. Metro station and lots of bus lines, including the 83 which takes you up and down the Corniche. Safe area as long as you take the usual precautions.

This experience is perfect for nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers seeking to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Calanques. Additionally, Oliver's guided urban hike provides an enriching exploration of Marseille's history and culture.
Our guide Olivier was very knowledgeable about the history and social issues along with being passionate about his home in Marseille. He took us through the streets and various villages which gave us an opportunity to see different out of the way places. We learned so much and very much enjoyed his company. Would definitely recommend this hike as it is very good value.

Highly recommend Oliver's urban hike. His knowledge of Marseille and all of its history is very deep. He took so much time to answer all of our questions. We were a group of five and he spent time walking and talking with each of us. We covered more than six miles in total with quite a bit of climbing up, so not a casual stroll for sure, but that is well described in the hike description, so we were all prepared. Thank you for an amazing tour and the excellent recommendation for lunch following.
Laurie C — Google review
This was the best way to start out our time in Marseille! Olivier gave us an amazing overview of the city, along with recommendations for lunch after the tour and other things to do while we are in Marseille. He also graciously offered to provide other recommendations via text if we needed anything. We are in love with the city and Olivier is a big part of that. Please be aware that Marseille is a very hilly city and know that the least “sportive” option might still be a lot of walking for the typical tourist due to the hills. Great for people who want a solid HIKE, culture, and history. 11/10 experience!
Caroline C — Google review
We (a group of 4) booked a private tour with Olivier as an excursion while we were in port on a cruise vacation. Olivier was absolutely wonderful from the booking, all the way through the tour. His tour felt like a love letter to his hometown. Not that he glossed over her imperfections, because he didn't. But it was evident that he loves her all the more for them. His knowledge was impressive and his passion was evident and contagious. I cannot recommend this tour enough. Do yourself a favor and skip the overpriced cruise excursions and hang out with Olivier for the day.
Hayley S — Google review
A must to complete your Marseille visit. Olivier is friendly, knowledgeable and the antithesis of the umbrella-touting guide with a gaggle of bored followers. The gruop is small, information personalized but thorough. We did puzzles urbains and enjoyed every minute.
Jennifer O — Google review
A guided tour with Olivier in Marseille is a relaxed and flexible experience that feels like having one of your friends showing you around the city where they live and love. Add to that the fact that Marseille is a super interesting and beautiful place and that Olivier knows everything you want to know about it and the result is a fascinating day out! Highly recommended! PS: Olivier’s English is perfect, so you can choose to do the tour in French, like I did to practise my rusty French, or English and the experience will be equally great.
Sergio G — Google review
Guide Oliver smoked during the "tour". Any guide information was sporadic, intermittent. Walk very briskly 1.5 km, guide only speaks with whoever is next to him, then stops for brief review with group, then repeat. Unlike any guided experience I ever had or heard of. Guide texted later to say we did not understand his notion of a "tour".We left before it was complete. Others reviews here are a mystery to me. Certainly don't mirror our experience. The guide smoking during the tour was the topper. Wow--- several months later I see the guide Oliver's revisionist portrayal of reality. Late? we were waiting for him to show up. His smoking was 30 minutes into the event, not while waiting. Asked any questions about the surroundings, or the city, he was clueless.... may as well have been a total stranger to the location. This "tour" is unprofessional as the devel, and if you dare to criticize, Oliver will recreate reality to appear a bit more positive. Been traveling for decades all over the globe, this tour is the worst without any possible contender.

Great experience! We were a group of 9 this morning and enjoyed every moment of the hike. Olivier is passionate and in love with his city. We highly recommend his urban hike ! Merci Olivier !

The Musee Subaquatique de Marseille offers a unique underwater experience, where visitors can admire 10 giant sculptures resting 5 meters deep on the seabed. Located just 100 meters from the urban beach Plage des Catalans, this innovative underwater art museum is easily accessible for snorkelers and swimmers. The site is designed not only to thrill visitors but also to promote biodiversity and environmental protection.
This was something different for sure, I enjoyed the experience. I couldn’t find much information out there about accessing the project so first went to the beach thinking maybe we could hire gear there, but unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be anywhere nearby (or at all?) that hires equipment out. After the afternoon at the beach we took a 30 minute bus ride to a Decathlon, where you can get a mask/swimming goggles for €10-20. For me it wasn’t far enough to need fins, and wasn’t choppy enough to need a snorkel. The area is protected from boats so you don’t need a fluorescent marker, and you can hold onto the white buoy between dives so I didn’t need any kind of flotation device. There are currently 11 sculptures I think, as laid out in the photo (spoiler!) - they’re all in a circle around the white buoy, none more than 5m away or 5m deep. Very easy, I was only in the water around 30 minutes - it was grey and drizzly out! Had fun trying to guess what some of them were before the barnacles so excuse the naming! There is one changing cubicle at the beach, outside cold showers, toilets, and a place to leave your things for free (only open from 10am on Saturday). Hope this helps somebody out. I did also email the museum for a free tour as it says to do on the website but I probably left it a bit late.

This museum, an outbuilding of which will be installed on Catalans Beach in 2021, encompasses an artistic, technical, scientific, educational and environmental project.
