The Basilica of Notre-Dame-of-la-Garde at Marseille is a grand basilica located at the city's highest point, featuring a golden statue of the Virgin Mary by Lequesne. For those seeking a luxurious stay, there are options like the InterContinental Marseille and Sofitel Marseille Vieux Port with breathtaking views of the Old Port. Alternatively, visitors can opt for boutique accommodations such as Le Petit Nice Passedat or C2 Hotel for a more intimate experience.
The cathedral sits at the highest hill and point in the city. Multiple levels with a restaurant and cafe. The interior is beautifully designed with intricate details. The outside areas and decks of the cathedral offer panoramic views of Marseille, the Mediterranean Sea, and the surrounding landscape, and can clearly see Chateau D'if in the distance. There was construction 🚧 going on at the time we visited as well. A must visit for Marseilles, as it is the main attraction in the city and best part free entry.
Drew W — Google review
An absolute must-see in Marseille! The panoramic view from the top is breathtaking—offering a stunning 360° look over the city, sea, and surrounding hills. The basilica itself is beautiful, rich in history and architectural detail. Reaching the top can be a bit of a climb, but it’s well worth the effort. Whether you're religious or not, the atmosphere is peaceful and inspiring. Ideal for reflection, photography, or simply enjoying the view. A highlight of any trip to Marseille.
Ilox — Google review
Notre-Dame de la Garde is definitely a must-see in Marseille. The cathedral itself is stunning, and the panoramic views over the city are breathtaking, especially at sunset – it’s truly magical. The only downside was that I couldn’t pay in cash to enter the museum, which was a bit inconvenient. Otherwise, it was an amazing experience.
Youcef G — Google review
Quite a walk from the train station; the uphill climb is a duzy; my hubby is 70 and I'm 64. We made it , but it's a workout. The outside is being restored, so there were several places we couldn't go. Great views.
Doreen V — Google review
I really loved what I got to see. Unfortunately, the main part of the basilica was closed when I visited, and they were doing restoration on the Bonne Mère statue on top. The views from the basilica, however, were stunning and I loved seeing some history with the damaged walls from the liberation of Marseille during WWII.
Nancy D — Google review
Fantastic place to look out over the city. The church itself is also pretty, if you’re into that. It was a steep climb for us, up many steps, but worth it for the view! Very popular with tourists
Charlotte H — Google review
Beautiful Basílica and even better views of the area. Fascinating history as well. Take the tiny train up. Great little tour of the area and it’s easy.
Brandon-Dean M — Google review
A unique experience. The city itself amazed us, and when we got to the hill where the basilica is, in addition to seeing the whole city, everything that surrounds it, we also saw an unusual building that seems to be in the clouds. The golden statue of the Virgin Mary and the Child was being restored at the time of our visit, but this did not diminish the impression. The parking lot is at the foot, you can come by bus or tourist car, go around as much as you want and return by the next one (often departures are organized). You can buy souvenirs in a couple of places, the toilet is in the part you need to reach, but it's not far, just in a not so obvious place. Ask, they will guide you, if you don't know how. A lot of tourists are always expected, but not to the extent that it spoils the tour.

Château d'If is a 16th-century island castle and former prison located in the Bay of Marseille. Famously known as the setting for Alexandre Dumas' novel, The Count of Monte Cristo, this historic fortress has captured the imagination of many visitors. While some may claim that the novel's story is based on real events, it's undeniable that the island's scenic beauty and its role as a former state prison make it an intriguing destination.
Amazing ferry ride out to the Château. Amazing place to visit! Loved the dome at top where the voice echos when you talk. We also loved the old graffiti from the prisoners.
Cindy R — Google review
If you are visiting Marseille, take some time to visit this historical site. Easy 20 ferry ride from the port and then we spent about an hour walking through the old prison dungeons and enjoying the outdoors with great views. There is even a cafe to grab a drink before you head back to main land.
Susan W — Google review
We finally made it to our most awaited visit! Although, we must admit, we weren’t thrilled about the bright sunshine. But hey, there’s a restaurant right there if you’re in the mood for a quick beer. Overall, the place is pretty good, and the route is amazing. It’s just 20 minutes from the Marseille Vieux Port, making it a great spot to visit during the summer. The view from the fort terrace is simply breathtaking. You can see the big Frioul Island on one side and the city of Marseille on the other. It’s always a treat to watch the big cruise ships and small boats passing by. The fort is well-maintained and preserved, and there’s not much to see inside, but it’s definitely worth a visit at least once.
Pavan W — Google review
Okay, so the Château d'If is this really famous old castle right off the coast of Marseille. The main thing you gotta know is that it's famous because of the book, The Count of Monte Cristo, which used it as the ultimate prison. King Francis I built it way back in the 16 th century to protect the coast, but it ended up being this crazy, inescapable state prison—basically France's version of Alcatraz. You take a quick boat ride from the Old Port to get there, and the minute you see it on the island, it looks super isolated. The view of Marseille from the top is awesome, but the best part is walking around the cells. They even have the fictional one for Edmond Dantès, which is cool. You learn that if you were rich, you got a nice cell (called a "pistole" cell) with a window and fireplace. But if you were poor, you were stuck in a dark, gross dungeon. It's a total must-see if you love that book or just want to explore a spooky piece of history.
Kyle J — Google review
I would say it’s a good experience to visit this well known island. However it’s really small and not as big as expectation. If you don’t have enough time in Marseille, maybe you can skip here.
Rio C — Google review
Takes about 30-40 mins in the ferry, lovely ride and costed us 11 Euros for the Ferry and 7 euros for the entry to the castle. The place is very scenic surrounded by water and one can see different islands around as well. The castle has the stories and posters that you can read about it's history.
Prajwal G — Google review
Absolutely beautiful,a highlight of Marseille. It has a beautiful view of Marseille. Although there's not that much in the castle and it can be a bit pricey, I would suggest it as a must do.
Alessandro C — Google review
Gorgeous views, a must of you're in Marseille. You take a boat from the Old Port and it takes you to the island. We spent there around 2 hours and grabbed a boat back to the Old Port. The boat ticket to the island was 18eur

Spanning over 17 hectares, the park boasts various garden styles including French, English, botanical, and Chinese gardens. It also houses a racecourse and a waterfront promenade along Plage Borély.

Big park, beautifully maintained and nice little lakes. Interesting animals too! Water rats, ducks and peacocks!
Sarah L — Google review
One of favourite places in marseille. Very relaxing and quiet. Suitable to take a walk, or a quick run. Kids will love the ducks, otters, and the other birds that roam freely in their natural habitat. They have small play areas for smaller kids. The views are beautiful.
Sarath F — Google review
A wonderful park to take a walk. Nice that they have a botanical garden that you can access by scanning a qr code to make an appointment to visit for free. Sad that the rose garden has no flower 🌹. Still early to see them.
Mircea M — Google review
Very nice place to visit with family .
Bartosz M — Google review
This parc is amazing. It has a lot to offer. You can walk through and admire the views over the sea. The castle on top of the hill is also worth a visit. The Botanical Garden as well is very beautiful.
Jarne B — Google review
The best part is ..... there are no dog poos !! There are many unusual trees from different parts of the world that were planted a long time ago. Some have their names on them. It's a good place to take your kids, especially to teach them how to ride a bicycle. It does get busy at weekends and during school holidays. Springtime is probably a good season to stroll around as you can enjoy all the new flowers. There's also a rose garden worth visiting.

Fort Saint-Jean, a 17th-century fortress located at the entrance to the port of Marseille, offers visitors a chance to explore its historical significance and charming ancient architecture. Originally built by Louis XIV in 1660, the fort has been renovated and now features a bridge connecting it to Le Panier, Marseille's oldest neighborhood.
Amazing view. You can see the whole port and the Mediterranean sea. Very clean place. Lots of paths for walking. Entrance is free, so you can enjoy the location even just for a walk or to relax on a bench. There is one cafeteria inside the fort next to the exhibition building. The fort is connected with the Mediterranean museum by a bridge with amazing view. With the price of one ticket you can visit all the exhibitions. The cathedral across the street is also visible. One of the best locations in the city.
Darkhawk T — Google review
We stopped in Marseilles while on a long cruise thru the Mediterranean. We used Google maps to self guided our around the city. The major historic sites were very easy to fine, especially this old fort built in 1660. Very well maintained. Situated along the end of the beautiful promenade.
Perry H — Google review
The views are stunning. At the very top, surprise! There is a fragrant garden of aromatic herbs. Entry is free! The fortress itself is exciting to walk around. Some exhibitions are chargeable.
Andy C — Google review
You will certainly notice this place when you are nearby. The fort itself is free for visitors, there are 4 museums that are located here and there inside the fort. You can easily spend half a day here, the view is spectacular.
S.R. W — Google review
Absolutely stunning views. I had a great time walking around here. The cafe was also delicious and had lots of water. The gardens around the grounds were thoughtful with lots of places to sit. It was free to walk around.
Savana N — Google review
Built in 1660 by order of King Louis XIV, Fort Saint-Jean is one of the gems of Marseille. In my opinion, a must-see in Marseille. The views from the fort are breathtaking. Wonderful....
Piotr T — Google review
• Historic gateway to the Old Port: Built in the 17th century (1660) by King Louis XIV, Fort Saint-Jean guarded the entrance to the Vieux-Port — Marseille’s historic harbor — together with its twin, Fort Saint-Nicolas on the opposite side. • Symbolic location: Perched right at the mouth of the port, it’s a stunning mix of military history and panoramic views. From the ramparts you can see Notre-Dame de la Garde, the Vieux-Port, and the open sea. • Architectural blend: Medieval tower foundations, classical bastions, and 21st-century walkways (linking to the MuCEM – Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations) make this one of the most atmospheric sites in Marseille. • Cultural revival: Since 2013, Fort Saint-Jean has been part of the MuCEM complex, beautifully restored and open to visitors — with gardens, exhibition spaces, and terraces. The modern footbridge connecting the fort to MuCEM is itself a local icon. • Photo heaven: The stone fort, blue sea, and sweeping city backdrop make it one of the most photographed spots in the city. Sunset views here are breathtaking.
Amrit D — Google review
This place is very large and you can spend hours exploring it. In addition to the fortifications there are also several gardens which are a nice contrast. The site also has plenty of spectacular photo opportunities.

Palais Longchamp, a grand monument built in the mid-1800s, stands as a tribute to the completion of an impressive canal construction project in Marseille. The building's architecture combines Baroque, Roman, and Oriental styles and features a stunning sculpture fountain at its center. Visitors can explore the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Marseille and Le Museum d'Histoire Naturelle located within the palace complex.
Stunning palace in a nicer area of Marseille. Very scenic and picturesque as you're walking up. Lots of great photo opportunities and there's gardens and a playground at the top behind the pillars. Easy to access to via tram. Definitely don't miss this if you're in Marseille.
James — Google review
Easily one of the best sites to visit in Marseille and France as a whole. Interesting and valuable history, and fantastic grounds. The fountains are simply breathtaking. Palais Longchamp also has the Beaux-Arts Museum and The Museum of Natural History. So all-in-all a great place to spend the day.
Latham W — Google review
It's one of the beautiful historical architecture place I have visited. Beautiful for day spending.also I have seen people coming here to read books, paint and spent time with family and friends. And it holds an importance of how a city used to get water from river and this was a canal back in 16th-17th century. Built by Duke of Orleans. Beautiful and scenic
Vishal M — Google review
Mesmerizing and above all charming palace built by the instructions of Napoleon III. Great place for Instagram photos because of the gorgeous building architecture with an artificial waterfall under the statue. Two lovely fountains that are set in the small artificial lake are making you see the rainbows under the proper light conditions which certainly adds to the charm of this place. On one side of double sided stairs is a Natural history museum and on the other Museum of the Beautiful Arts which are a good-to-go places if you're visiting Marseille. Behind the structure is a lovely park and a metro and a bus station, so the place has a great connection to the other parts of the city with public transportation systems. My recommendation is to visit it during the afternoon hourse, and catch "a golden sun hour" cause seeing it at this time is certainly a remarkable expirience.
Ivana O — Google review
A beautiful monument which houses two museums: the Beaux-Arts and the Natural History Museum. The latter was small (free) but packed full of information on life and the earth. Great for kids but not only... The park itself was a little scruffy and neglected, notices indicated that it was undergoing an extensive restoration plan.
Catherine Y — Google review
I couldn't get into the museum due to lack of time, but I think it's one of the most beautiful places in this city!
Vanessa A — Google review

Parc national des Calanques, established in 2012, is a stunning natural reserve located in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region. Encompassing both land and sea areas, it spans over 8,500 hectares of land across Marseille, Cassis, and La Ciotat, along with 43,500 hectares of marine territory. This park boasts remarkable biodiversity with numerous protected terrestrial and marine species.
If you are here for tourism, you should definitely check this place. There are so many trekking points. And what a beautiful path! You will definitely fall in love with this place.
Dayanand M — Google review
I can highly recommend climbing the Massif Marseilleveyre if you're into hiking. Steep climb, but astounding views of virtually the entirety of Marseille and surrounding Calanque. The unique limestone landscape was really cool, great for photography
Peter N — Google review
No fire, no smoking and no litter please ! Gemstone water at the foot of dizzy white cliffs. A good physical condition is better since you may need at minimum about 1h of walking one way from the parking to the beach. Check on the internet if the path is open, it closes on dry and windy times to limit wildfire risks and you need a reservation (free) during summer. You can also choose to dive there, which is a great way to see the Mediterranean fishes near Riou, where fishing is prohibited.
Paul A — Google review
Stunning place, rugged mountain cliffs perched above the mediteranean. Hiked the red-white trail from les Baumettes to Cassis, aprox 25km. Tough terrain, sometimes became quite exposed, not your average walk in the park, attention to the path and markings is key. Losing or missing a sign can lead you to the middle of nowhere. Bring plenty of water.
Gabriel F — Google review
Visiting the Calanques National Park was an absolutely sublime experience. The turquoise waters are breathtaking, and the way the sea crashes against the mountains creates a powerful, almost overwhelming sensation. I had the chance to discover it on a yacht, which made the experience even more unique and luxurious, allowing me to fully enjoy the hidden coves and majestic cliffs. The contrast between the crystal-clear sea, the bright limestone rocks, and the calm Mediterranean atmosphere is unforgettable. A true natural wonder that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Marseille.
Youcef G — Google review
Great place to spend time if you are traveling with kids. Lots of different animals to see. Interesting facts mentioned in attractive way for kids to read.

Beautiful national park on the Mediterranean coast. We were here rock climbing for a week. You could stay here a year and never do the same 2 climbs. So much to explore and climb. Incredible rock and views. Definitely do the 6 pitch 5.10a Arete de Marseille. Some of the more popular climbing areas are a little slick from wear. Still, worth it and highly recommend for a climbing trip!!
Andrew G — Google review
Well maintained national park with lots of properly marked hiking options! Good cliff diving experience can be gained at the calanque d’en Vau, for the adrenaline seekers! Pack a lot of water (minimum 2 ltrs per person) and supplies because one you leave from Parking du loggison, there’s no water source, ANYWHERE!!

Mucem - Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean is a striking venue that opened in 2013, offering captivating exhibitions on the history and cultures of the Mediterranean region. The museum's contemporary architecture provides stunning sea views and houses world-class exhibits showcasing the intriguing stories behind European and Mediterranean civilizations. Its vast collection includes Neolithic and contemporary art, football memorabilia, graffiti, antique tarot cards, sound recordings, and unique artifacts like mermaid-shaped bread.
An incredibly located museum of Mediterranean cultures lets you discover them from a very interesting perspective. The temporary exhibitions are very good. The building is new, but connected by a bridge to an old fort, which adds to the experience. Marseille and its amazing charm can become a bit more understandable after a visit to this museum. The café in the fort is also worth recommending. It’s worth stopping by the gift shop — wonderful selections, especially in the book section, as well as beautiful handicrafts.
Ra — Google review
Mucem is an absolute must-see when in Marseille. The location is incredible — right on the waterfront with stunning views of the sea, the old port, and the city. The architecture itself is beautiful and makes the visit worth it even before stepping inside. Entry was €11, which I found fair for what’s on offer. During my visit there were two exhibitions: one on astrology and another on the history of the Amazigh ⵣ people. Both were fascinating and well presented. Even if you’re not big on museums, the setting alone — the views, the atmosphere, the building — will make your day. A great spot to take in both culture and scenery in one visit. Highly recommended.
Ash1741 — Google review
The building itself, it's architecture, the views of Marseille all around is very beautiful and impressive. That was actually the highlight of our visit. We saw three exhibitions. "The Mediterranean", which was the most interesting,"read the sky" was nice. and "the popular" was a bit too eclectic and average.
Najah A — Google review
Masterpiece of post modern architecture and wonderful exhibition spaces. I spent a whole day on Fort St Jean and MUCEM. The current exhibitions are quite diverse and well worth the price of entry. If you just want the sightseeing it's free.

The MuCEM in Marseille is a must-visit! The Don Quixote exhibition is full of imagination, but the most fascinating part for me was exploring the ancient astrology and fortune telling documents, a real treat if you love history and cosmic curiosities. Besides the rooftop café is perfect for reading a book, enjoying the sunshine, and sipping coffee with sea views. Been here twice. Once in Jun 2019, another recently on 15 Oct 2025. The amount of signages to help guide you TO the Mucem entrance for typical visitors is zero. You spend 20min walking via the piazza at ground level to the museum entrance facing the sea, bam, the entrance sign says priority entrance for kids only. You gotta walk backwards to the cliff/rock to the entrance at the Vieux Port (series of staircases) to cross the giant metal bridges. Only then can you enter. Or so we were told on that Wednesday on 15 Oct 2025. There is also no way of telling if an exhibit is free to enter unless you beat the queue to ask a simple question.

A museum with a clear point of view, which makes it not just interesting and aesthetic but a thought-provoking growth experience as well. The exhibit that explores what the term "Mediterranean" could mean and how it has been and is used is fascinating. The exhibit that explores the night sky's importance to the people's if the region was not only fascinating, but it provoked in me several times feelings of awe and deep emotion. This doesn't happen to me often, so I am grateful to the museum and its creators/curators for the entire experience. In addition to all this, the structures in which the exhibits are housed and the native plant gardens are absolutely exquisite. We were not in Marseille long enough to "do everything." I am glad we did not miss this.

Les Petits Trains de Marseille offer a delightful way to explore the city, especially for families with kids. The charming little train resembles an old steam locomotive and provides an entertaining and educational tour of Marseille's key attractions and historical sites. With three different routes available depending on the season, visitors can enjoy narrated tours that cover the Corniche, Old City, and even take them up to the famous hilltop church, Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde.
Wonderful experience to take you along the coast and up the hill to see the basilica. There aren't a lot of public transit options to go up there but $10/adult and $5/child is a great value. It's a pretty smooth ride and pretty quick to go up and down the hill. They drop you off at the basilica and you can spend however long you want there, just keep your ticket and head back.
James — Google review
Excellently organized train. Buy tickets in the center near the port, it departs often, there are many of them, in two directions (red and green, depends on the part of the city you want to visit). There are headphones next to you, you choose the language and a tour of the chalk. There is quite a long way to go, in my opinion the route leading to Notre Dame is mandatory, because everything about it and around it is indescribable and imposing. The car leaves you in the parking lot, you save the tickets and on the way back you enter another one. There is not much waiting, but don't go with hats and creams, the sun is strong on the hill where the building is built. On the way back, the ride was interesting because the streets are steep, like going down a slide. Everything I have about driving in 2025 is in the photos.

Great ride. We got in early and there was no line. When we got back the line was already very long. There is 1 stop along the way with great panoramic view.
Peleg B — Google review
The Petit Train is a wonderful way to see the highlights of Marseille without tiring yourself out, especially if you’re short on time or less able to walk up the city’s steep streets. The tour typically starts down by the Old Port (Vieux Port) and winds its way up to the iconic Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, offering breathtaking views of the city and the Mediterranean along the way. The ride is comfortable, with an audio guide available in multiple languages (English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian), adding context to what you’re seeing. You'll learn about the rich history of Marseille, its transformation from a Greek settlement to a bustling port city, and stories about its most famous landmarks. While it’s a bit touristy — and the seats can be somewhat small — it’s a great way to orient yourself, rest your feet, and appreciate the city’s character. Some say the ride feels bouncy on the cobblestone streets, but that's all part of its vintage appeal. Overall, the Petit Train is a convenient, charming, and family-friendly activity — especially for first-time visitors or those with limited mobility — that lets you appreciate the best of Marseille in a short ride.

The best way to explore Marseille and really good value at €10/adult. It’s also the best way to get to Notre-Dame De La Garde and you can get of and explore here and catch another one back. They run every 10mins ish too. Go early to avoid the crowds and the heat. We went around 10am on 31st July and no queues or crowding and were back in the Old Port by midday having seen all we wanted to see.

We came off from the cruise ship and wanted to join the hop on hop off bus in Marseille. We were glad we did not pre-book the tickets in advance. The line to the bus was so long. At least 50 people. It looked like we would have to wait at least 1 hr to get on. With the time constraints, we were looking for another option. The taxi driver was very helpful in taking us into town to find the Petit Trains de Marseille. She said this would be a better option and it was less expensive and it would take us to all the tourist areas as well. We paid for the tickets 10 euros per person which was quite reasonable. Only one line of two available was working that day but it was the one we wanted to go on. The mini train ride was quite relaxing and very scenic. We were glad this other option to tour Marseille was available in addition to the Colorbus hop on hop off bus.

Is a convenient and charming way to see the city's main sights, especially the famous Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica. It's great for avoiding the steep walk and offers fantastic views. While it can feel a bit touristy, it's a worthwhile, fun ride that provides a good overview of the city.

One of the options to get to and from Notre-Dame de la Garde is to take the Petit Train 🚂 The train departs from the Old Port to Notre Dame de la Garde via the corniche on the seafront. (Circuit no 1) There’s nice view of the coastline and speakers playing guided tour in English and Spanish along the way. It’s fun, relaxing and hassle free. 😎

Perched atop the highest point in Marseille, Notre Dame de la Garde is a grand basilica offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city. This Byzantine and Romanesque Revival church has been a significant landmark where local fishermen used to have their boats blessed. The free entrance allows visitors to admire the serene beauty of the church and enjoy the 360-degree view of Marseille.

The Massif des Calanques is a stunning national park located along the Mediterranean coast, stretching from Marseille to Cassis. Accessible primarily by boat, it offers breathtaking views of rugged cliffs and coastline. The park features deep rocky coves with clear waters nestled among limestone cliffs, providing opportunities for water sports like kayaking and paddle boarding. Visitors can also explore underwater cave inscriptions and enjoy guided boat tours or private rides to fully experience the area's natural beauty.
This national park provides amazing hikes to see crystal clear water and amazing cliff sides. As you stand and gaze through the picturesque landscape you will marvel at scenery typically seen in books or travel brochures. This is a must see if visiting Marseille.

My boyfriend and I did an incredible 17km hiking loop passing through Calanques d’en Vau starting from Cassis (picture attached of our route, listed as a trail running route found on Kamoot). Absolutely stunning hike which is WELL worth the effort! The natural park feels and is completely unspoilt due to no car access etc. A MUST if you are anywhere near this area :)

Nature here is amazing. I had some difficulties to find the right path, without google maps was impossible and not always very clear. However, if you like to walk and/or hike, this place is for you. Cristal water and small beaches, we went end july and not a lot of people. Of course you need to be lucky (like anywhere) that the few people you have are not loud. We took the tellow path. This one is not suitable for kids! But hey, it’s nature!:) A bit sad that in the sea you can se a lot of boats but then the park is closed to the public. Environmentally the impact of boats is way higher then just people walking. However, it was a great experience.

This is easily one of the coolest parks I've been to. It's absolutely beautiful with plenty of well-marked hiking trails. There's also plenty of climbing areas, some of which require far-from-obvious trails that require scrambling or rappelling at times. Rarely, you'll find chains at the extremely scrambly sections.

At the heart of Merseille, it is both terrestrial and marine: it is the only national park in Europe to be periurban and, in the Mediterranean. It is a nice short escape from busy city life. Get a ticket from Old port. They have 2.15 hours and 3.5 hours two different journey schedule. Ticket cost 32 and 38 euros. If you want swimming or stopping more extra.

Cathédrale La Major is a grand 19th-century neo-Byzantine cathedral located in the historic Le Panier district of Marseille. Its exterior is a majestic blend of Byzantine and Romanesque styles, with green and white limestone covering the monument. The opulent interior features marble, mosaics, and murals that create a striking contrast to the outer surface.
We did not see this cathedral on the city's highlights must see location but was extremely impressed by it. The cathedral is huge, the decor and the small statues on the doors and pillars are so detailed they looked real. The inside was actually a lot bigger than it looked from the outside. A lady was singing a song when we walked in and just added to the ambience. There were so many statues of different poses and their details were just incredible and I was so memorized. The best part was that it was free to enter.

Cathédrale La Major, built in the 19th. It’s a striking 19th-century Roman Catholic cathedral built in a Byzantine-Roman style, with alternating white and green stones giving it the striped look. Located near the Old Port and the Joliette district, it’s one of the largest cathedrals in France and a major landmark of the city.

Cathédrale La Major is one of Marseille’s most striking landmarks — a grand 19th-century basilica that towers above the sea near the Old Port. Built in a bold Byzantine-Roman style with striped marble and elegant domes, it stands out beautifully against the Mediterranean backdrop. The interior is equally impressive, adorned with mosaics, marble columns, and vaulted ceilings that create a serene, majestic atmosphere. Its terrace also offers sweeping views over the harbor and Le Panier district. Both spiritual and architectural, La Major is a must-see gem that captures Marseille’s blend of faith, history, and grandeur.
Ivy N — Google review
The cathedral is located in a beautiful place. The view of the landscape around her is as spectacular as herself. From the outside it is grandiose, inside every fresco and statue will hold your attention, no matter what religion you are. A must visit and take some time to look around. We parked ten minutes' walk from it, but the city is well connected by metro lines. It is spacious and demanding to get around. Find out which type of tour suits you best.
Ana F — Google review
Walking up to Cathedral La Major in Marseille, I was immediately struck by its immense scale and the rich details of its architecture. The cathedral stands as a majestic blend of Romanesque Revival and Byzantine styles, a true testament to the city’s complex history and strong spirit. The two immense towers that frame its entrance reach upward, adding a dramatic silhouette against the Mediterranean sky. We arrived just as mass was concluding, which turned out to be a profoundly moving moment. Inside, a woman was singing in French alongside the majestic notes of the organ, creating a rich, ethereal ambiance that filled every corner of the vast space. The combination of her voice and the organic-like reverberations made the moment feel eternal, a pure expression of faith and artistry. The intricate mosaics, soaring arches, and lavish details made for a breathtaking experience, reflecting both the past and future of Marseille.

Charming harbor in the downtown This place deserves a visit. Quite close to the old port (shorter than 30’ walking), you’ll find a charming harbor seemingly entering deep in the downtown. You can walk along the wharfs enjoy a glass or a nice dinner. If you go on 150 meters on the right side you’ll reach the seafront with a nice view on the bay, especially at sunset. Do not try to get very close by car, it’s almost impossible to park.

A small and traditional fishing village, born just below a viaduct, in the 19th century. It is located along the Kennedy Corniche, the splendid promenade named after the American president, which rises just outside the Old Port and the center of Marseille. it is possible to admire the small pastel-colored fishermen's houses, the lined up boats, all colored and the water with a thousand shades as a frame. A truly fascinating and evocative place. Undoubtedly among the most picturesque in the city. if you want to take a postcard photo you have to pop into this little gem. you can reach it on foot or by city bus.

This was a truly fantastic place. Kids had a brilliant time. We were there for the entire day and still didnt quite manage to go on everything. Popular but didnt feel crowded at all, probably because it is very well laid out. Plenty of place to sit whilst waiting. And even in the heat the shade offered by the trees was really sufficient. At first we were disappointed that lots was closed due to the high risk of fires(which we totally understand of course) but the park is so big and we didn't miss anything. Kids had a blast. 10-15 yo. The big trees give lots of shade (+35°C) And all the water games made it amazing for many hours of play. The price is not much for a whole day of fun. Unfortunately lost a Orange Data card :(

A bit expensive for a family of four. They make you pay for a child starting at the age of 2 years old. There were lots of climbing activities for the kids but everything was really dusty and sandy. Best place I’ve been in Marseille! From when u enter the building u catch these super good vibes! People are chilling around, doing sports or dancing and none seems to notice you’re visiting. They’re just there living their lives and enjoying. The bistrot isn’t that cheap and for an italian that thing they serve can’t be called pizza for sure 😂 but the atmosphere does it all. There’s a menu of the day with veg and vegetarian food, there’s wine, there’s good music. ATTENTION: The terrace isn’t always open!

Sometimes one finds a hidden gem out of surprise in the middle of nowhere near to the expectations. This is one of the such places. I was invited there for an interesting exhibition on ‘Digital Art’ by the artist Mr. Ugo. Key points to remember for me. 1. This place is adjacent to Marseille Saint Charles station. An old, ghostly looking structure having several halls. It has restaurants and skateboarding arena as well. Surprising for me as I didn’t know this even though I am quite regular at the station. 2. This unused place is now being using in such an artistic manner while keeping its rustic look maintained. One could feel that vibe. 3. The design and artistic look created by several artists have made this place an experience in itself. 4. The food at the grande tables restaurant is amazing. Must try. Now the services. It has ample parking spaces. Reasonably priced. Reasonable ticket prices for different exhibits.

What an amazing hangout place with a bar, cafe, bookstore, free photography exhibition and illustration exhibition, and lots of seating area. We came on a Monday so there was also a farmer's market! Would definitely come back here again when I visit the city next time.

Natural History Museums
The Natural History Museum of Marseille is a grand 19th-century museum that houses extensive collections of botanical, mineralogy, and zoology. For those seeking a luxurious stay, there are several high-end accommodations nearby with stunning views and unique features such as spas and cocktail bars. Families with curious little ones can enjoy visits, activities, and workshops at various museums throughout the city. The museum offers life-size games for children to explore while also providing themed courses and workshops for fans of prehistory.
This place is free as is the art room across the way at the Palais Longchamp (photo opportunities here). I did not even know it was there. The staff is so nice and will give you tips on surrounding places to visit. Keep in mind, this place is small (remember, it's free) but definitely check out the fossil room.... pretty cool!!!

Small natural history exhibit that would be interesting for any age. Lots to see, many English translations. A great renovation of a Victorian " dead zoo" into something more relavant and modern but still has a curiosity cabinet feel.
Miranda O — Google review
We came here to provide some entertainment for my daughter. The museum is surprisingly small, just three rooms and is mostly stuffed animals and bones with a few gems. I'd only give it three stars except that it is free, so it was worth it to just stop in for about 45 minutes. It is part of the glorious Longchamp palace, so if anything it is worth it stop in if you are seeing Longchamp.
Anthony S — Google review
3 stars because the Longchamps Palace and the museum building itself are magnificent. The temporary exhibitions are always worth it (recently saw the NatGeo best pictures and it was mind blowing) but the price is too high and the staff looking after the rooms is so noisy and chatty it makes it really hard to enjoy the art.
Youssra M — Google review
A very beautiful museum there's some parts free and other that you need to pay for it 😉

I visited the museum specifically for the national geographic exhibit. It was worth the €6 ticket. The museum itself is quite small but has an extensive (be it old and in need of some of repairs) collection of preserved wildlife. Would recommend if you have an hour to spare.
Carla S — Google review
For a small museum they packed lots of interactive informative activities to learn about life cycles and rock composition in ecosystems. There were so many taxidermed animals (I remember there was a sign saying they own over 2000 in their archive) there was a big variety of large mammals and reptiles to small insects. They house mosasuar skeleton and as cool as I percieve that to be the small space the museum is provided with lets down this Jurassic era specimen as it is cramped between other animals and you cannot truly see the scale of the animal. I think it would be an amazing sight to be displayed from the celling in either in its own room or in the entry hall where two staircases would frame it. Anyways it was a fun escape from unbearable heat outside and it wasn't very busy and for free admission it was a good use of a morning. (Look out for the fennec fox beneath the camel)

Prado Beach is a popular destination in Marseille, France, offering wide sandy beaches along the Corniche Kennedy. Visitors can explore Anse de la Fausse Monnaie for a more secluded beach experience with cliff diving opportunities. The Prado beaches stretch along the Mediterranean coast and were created in the 1970s with artificial pebbles. This area boasts several smaller beaches collectively known as Prado and features a large parking lot for easy access.
Small in size but very clean beach. Several life guards are always on duty giving a sense of security.

Amazing beach. No smoking allowed was a nice touch as it allowed us to chill with no smoke in our faces. Beautiful water if maybe a bit cold (nothing to do about that!)
John H — Google review
A location with multiple beach types - sand, rocks, or a mix. Amenities nearby, we rented an umbrella and used the public shower. Kids can play on the edge, otherwise the water is deep and calm enough for a swim.
Daniel Ž — Google review
Visited for the sailing events at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The site was a nice location, and the inclusion of a beach for viewers and sunloungers was a really nice touch. The capacity at the on site shop was questionable however, and the water taps only dispensed brutally warm water which didn't help in almost 40 degree heat. The sailing experience did feature screens to watch the action, but I'd argue the main attraction was to watch the boats up close on their way out of the marina, there wasn't much reason to stay after that. I chose to walk down the coast by a mile and view from a nicer beach.
Matt F — Google review
Expansive views of water with easy access.

It is brilliant idea to drop by here. There are two types of beach (with send or with pebbles) Sunshine is great and water is cool. Most of people are relaxed on the beach with sunbathing. If you have enough time, strongly recommend you to rest here for a while.
Jay L — Google review
Poorly organised olympic games. Very few stewards lack of information. Food choices very limited. Limited shade. No screens where they would be helpful. No big bags allowed - no changing rooms. All these things are free in the club 24 area which is 100 times better. Good views, but you can see all the races from public areas. I won't be going to the next Paris games.

Le Panier Marseillais is the oldest district in Marseille, known for its historic charm and vibrant atmosphere. Once a neighborhood of fishermen and immigrants, it now boasts cobblestoned streets, colorful buildings, and artisan shops. The area is reminiscent of Montmartre in Paris and offers a mix of grit and charm that's truly captivating. Visitors can explore Provencal-style buildings with colorful facades, discover street art works, and enjoy numerous cafes and alternative clubs.
Lively old neighborhood revived 12 years ago, when Marseille became cultural capital of Europe. Nice cafes, shops are offering variety of authentic products and drinks. Please note that most of the shops and restaurants are closed after 8 pm (it was on Monday, but still awkward to be closed that early).
Goktug U — Google review
This is the oldest district in Marseille and embodies the city’s rich history and identity. Once a working-class neighborhood, it has been revitalized through urban regeneration and now thrives as a vibrant center for leisure, creativity, and tourism. The name Le Panier (The Basket) originates from an inn with a sign depicting a basket that existed in the area during the 17th century. Over time, the name came to refer to the entire neighborhood. Characterized by narrow, winding alleys, steep streets, and aged buildings, Le Panier feels like a living maze. Today, it's akin to an open-air gallery, filled with street art, colorful murals, floral decorations, artisan shops, and charming cafés.
Seokjin H — Google review
Le Panier is Marseille’s oldest and most picturesque neighborhood — a maze of narrow streets, colorful facades, and artistic charm. Once a working-class district, it’s now a creative hub filled with boutiques, art studios, and cozy cafés tucked between pastel-painted buildings. Street art decorates nearly every corner, adding a vibrant contrast to its ancient architecture. Highlights include La Vieille Charité, a stunning 17th-century monument, and the panoramic views over the port. Wandering through Le Panier feels like stepping into a lively open-air gallery — authentic, bohemian, and full of southern French spirit

Chez Fonfon is a long-standing restaurant located by the port, offering a variety of Mediterranean fish dishes and renowned for its bouillabaisse broth. The establishment has been around for 50 years and is known for its simple and tranquil atmosphere, providing an authentic experience in the heart of Marseille. Additionally, it offers the opportunity to enjoy a meal by the sea at Vallon des Auffes, immersing diners in the life of local fishermen.
Enjoyed the coastal atmosphere and delicious seafood. Although most people were understandably having bouillabaise, I had the mixed seafood over a risotto made with fish soup broth. Perfect! Dessert was amazing, and it’s best to save room for it - especially if you’re getting the bouillabaise, which can really fill you up! Servers were very kind in offering to speak in English if desired.
Gary P — Google review
Reservation was made through The Fork. Bouillabaisse did not need to be reserved. My friend and I both ordered bouillabaisse. The soup and the fish were served separately. The waiter explained (in French) how to enjoy it. The soup can be refilled as many times as you like. We only refilled once cause we were full. After meal, they served macaroons as dessert.
Wicket W — Google review
Since it’s said that bouillabaisse is a must-try in Marseille, we decided to visit this restaurant. The fish was fresh, and the service was refined, though the prices were quite high. The mackerel dish we ordered as a starter was so delicious that I’m now more curious about their other menu items than the bouillabaisse itself. While it seems walk-ins might be possible on rare occasions, I’d recommend making a reservation.
Jiwon K — Google review
Came in for some dinner, didn’t have a reservation, got sat upstairs away from the window with a view, had multiple servers who were very quick and three spoke broken English. Had the Bouillabaisse and it’s noted on the menu the dish is for one person $65, it’s huge enough to share for 2 people. They show you the fish beforehand, the sauces are very garlicky. Only bottled water, tap wasn’t offered. It was just okay in my opinion… I feel like the atmosphere is what you come there for but not having the view, and the dish being mediocre, I probably wouldn’t recommend.
Heather W — Google review
THIS is the place to have real traditional bouillabaisse! They give you croutons with the spicy garlic aioli and red aioli to spread on them and let them sit on top of the soup. Then you cut the beautifully cooked fish and created your soup sandwich. They keep refilling your bowl with more bouillabaisse broth. The saffron in the soup adds a beautiful perfume to all the bites you have. This is a MUST in Marseille and we will be back! We also thank Hermes store Celine and Johann for making the reservation for us there.
Henry F — Google review
Some of these reviews are quite unfair based on my experience here yesterday! Staff were fantastic, very attentive and friendly. They spoke great english contrary to some of the reviews I've read. Beautiful location where you can see the local fisherman boats and as far as If (if seated facing that way of course). First time having bouillabaisse and it was very flavoursome and the fish were fresh and high quality with large portions. Admittedly this was my first time tasting this dish, but this is surely a wonderful place to experience it and priced fairly. Profiterole dessert was also great (would suggest sharing this). All in all a great experience!
Martin F — Google review
Sit by a quiet little harbor, Fonfon serves the most authentic bouillabaisse I’ve had. The broth is rich and endlessly refilled, the fish incredibly fresh, young staff werw all warm and attentive, would like ri answer your all questions. The individual souo portion came with bread and plate contained 5 types of fish, made me so full after an entry dish, well, not finished, there were another dessert I ordered came for ending... The stunning view out from window made this dinner warm and fabulous,in the late summer of France, what an unforgettable experience during my weekend visit in Marseille. You have to try it.

Cosquer Méditerranée is a cutting-edge museum located in Villa Mediterranee, Marseille. Opened in June 2022, the museum offers visitors a unique experience by showcasing replicas of rare Paleolithic art found in Grotte Cosquer, a cave submerged by the rising ocean near Marseille. The museum provides an immersive tour that replicates the actual cave, featuring engravings and paintings created by prehistoric people.
Brilliant recreation of the Cosquer Caverns and the paleolithic art going back over 30,000 years. Questions are asked (and only partially answered) about the meaning of the art and links to cave art elsewhere from the same period. This suggests a common culture, but who were these people? Some clues are here, but it is up to each visitor to understand their meaning.
Noel B — Google review
Remarkable place. The idea behind is great - due to inaccessibility of the original site, and in order to preserve it for the generations to come, a replica cave was made. The length of the tour is right, the effort invested in recreating the cave is tremendous and the price of the ticket is adequate. Would highly recommend!
Marko V — Google review
I really enjoyed my visit here! It was fun to ride in the tram and see all the meticulous work the artists did to recreate the caves, which are off-limits to the public. The audio guide was also excellent. I also liked the interesting movies showing how the museum was created, and the movie on the discovery of the caves. Amazing!
Eileen W — Google review
Opened in 2022, this is a replica museum that faithfully recreates the prehistoric Cosquer Cave—the only known submerged Paleolithic cave in France—located 37 meters below sea level. This immersive cultural experience brings to life the cave’s remarkable wall paintings and engravings, offering a rare glimpse into the art and life of early humans.

It was very cool! Im not gonna lie i wasn't so sure of how it was gonna be but consider me impressed. Well documented and it was actually very impressive. I'm not a big fan of museums but that one is the best I've visited ever! 11/10
Anthony P — Google review
We are very interested in the Paleolithic and couldn’t miss this museum. It is, as stated, a replica and NOT on the same premises as the original. That said, it was a very cool immersive experience. My 9 year old son was somewhat apprehensive about the elevator and darkness but he decided to go and enjoyed it without any anxiety. Certainly consider your comfort level but I would say that it is no scarier than a slow moving ride at a theme park - one main consideration is that once you commence the 30 minute ride there is no option to get off mid-ride. The museum itself was brief but well done, nice replicas of all of the animals depicted in the art. The price was expensive for a museum, but I have no regrets given the unique cave replica experience.
Andrew V — Google review

Absolutely brilliant visit. The cave is beautifully recreated and the presentation is excellent. My five year old and I were both captivated. The museum after was cool as well. Biggest ice rink in a France! Light show, shows, toys, family fun...
Tremblay A — Google review
Before coming, we had verified on the site if there were no events and that the big ice skating ring was free. That was the case for today (27/12/19) according to the site. When we got there, we saw that 1/3rd was closed and only 4 people had access; a bit of a bummer, and it would have been nice to know but ok. After 30min of ice skating, we were clearly told by 3 security guards to evacuate the big ice skating ring because from now it will be closed all day! So we paid to ice skate only 30min. No one even told us or warned us that it would be closing. Very shameful. Lots of people left since only the small ice skating ring was open now. Moreover by the time we gave back the shoes and were outside of the ring, we saw that they were re-oping the big ice skating ring. We then respectfully confronted the security guards about the situation but they were extremely impolite and denied what they told us earlier. We imagine that they pulled this off to make some of the people leave because it was crowded. It's disgusting and impolite. I wouldn't recommended this place to anyone. And if that wasn't enough to convince you: expect for being impolite, the security guards served no purpose. A lot of people did not respect the rules and had dangerous behaviours; and obviously the security guards didn't do anything about it. I'm never coming back and neither should anyone else. Ok bye

Very friendly and smiling staff. We had beer and Muscat wine which was great. Amazing location for drinks at a very local place in Marseilles, where the locals hang out. The park next to it had a market which was a bonus to walk around after few drinks.

Decent bar in the busy Place Jean Jaurs not too far from Cours Julien. Definitely the cheapest bar we came across in our two days in the city - previously found 500ml beer at €6 - €7 but it was €4 in this place. Most seating is outdoor.

Nice spot to stop for a drink. Located on a terrace in a cute square. Good atmosphere in the evening. Waiters were attentive and prompt. Drinks were good and cheap(€6 for an aperol). Would recommend to anyone looking for a spot to stop with friends for a drink.

Great spot - excellent atmosphere, unbeatable prices, speedy service. The place was so busy on a Friday night and still somehow we got served faster than anywhere in Marseille. They take your order in just the first few minutes and bring you your drinks in the next 5! Incredible.

Parc du Pharo is a stunning oasis nestled in Marseille, originally constructed in the late 19th century as a gift from Napoleon III to Empress Eugenie. This historic site has transformed over the years; after serving as a hospital post-Napoleon's reign, it now boasts six hectares of beautifully landscaped gardens that are open to the public. Went to this restaurant to have dinner on the 11th of November. Went up the elevator and was greeted by both waiters. They then showed me to my table and made sure I liked it. They do try to seat costumers in order to have the best view and it is a VERY nice view. The whole restaurant and staff is well presented, clean, and elegant. It's the kind of restaurant that you would go to celebrate an accomplishment or for a special date. Their menu is small, but take it as a good thing: it means they perfect the few dishes that they do have. And perfect they were: from the presentation to the taste to the timing between them. I have to give a special shoutout to the waiter Michael who made sure I was having a nice experience and took the time to explain every detail about the food. He also has some majestic hair.

Booked for dinner on a Friday evening in June. A beautiful room but was largely empty ie no atmosphere. Two waiters servicing the room and we were promptly seated and then just waited and waited and waited. After 10 mins our drinks order was taken and we were then promptly given an appetiser. We were then able to order and waited almost 40 mins for the first ordered dish to be served. It was always difficult to get the attention of either waiters. The food was good enough but our evening was spoilt by the slow , no very slow service and the feeling that we were being ignored. I don’t want to spend my time in a restaurant complaining , so said nothing. One of the pictures I’ve uploaded is of the lovely shaped lights , we had some just above our table. They are covered in dust. Not nice ! Marseille , I’ll be back. The table, I’ll give it a miss thank you.

The food was delicious. Amazing choices. The staff on the other hand: terrible. We were placed on the terrace without coverage over our head (it started to rain slowly). We mentioned this several times… that we didnt want to eat our food in the rain. They said: it wont rain dont worry. When it started to rain heavily.. everyone started to worry… rain water in the food.. they kept us waiting for a bit and then took us inside. The staff were very slow as well, communication was lacking. Sadly.

The Orange Vélodrome, home to the Olympique de Marseille football club, is a renowned sports stadium and event venue in France. Originally built as a cycling track in 1937, it has since been redeveloped with a distinctive undulating roof and modern features. With a seating capacity of 67,000, it is one of the largest stadiums in France and has hosted significant events such as the FIFA World Cup.

Orange Velodrome is a second biggest stadion in France after Saint Denis stadion in Paris. We went there to watch a football match between O.Marseille and Le Havre, which was one of the League 1 matches of the french championship. The place has a unique architecture and acoustics, so it has been used for a number of pop concerts also. The entrance to the stadion is more then well organized, with more then welcoming and pleasant staff (at least when it's about entrance of the ladies to the match). The access to the stadion is quite wide, which makes a vast number of people enter the tribune in relatively short amount of time. Public transportation leads you very close to the main two entrances of the stadion that are set on the opposite sides, and infront of the stadion you can buy drinks and fast food on small stands. Everything is well marked, so you can't get lost. Hygiene in the toilets is OK considering it's a public space and there is a lot of staff members that can lead you to your seat's among which there is not much of those that are speaking English. Lighting conditions are great, as well as the acoustics but the biggest plus is definitely the atmosphere among fans of the O. Marseille. I recommend entering about half an hour earlier, so that you don't miss out on the friendly atmosphere among the fans. If you're a fan of football, you'll be thrilled that fans are cheerleading for almost all of the game time, without any incidents or a bad behavior. Certainly a must see! "Droit au but"!

Went to watch Ed Sheeran's concert. They opened the gates on time and it only took less than 5 mins to enter. The signages were big so you won't get lost where Porte and Block you'll be in. The stadium is indeed spacious but the movements were limited when seated. You either have to leave your seat so others can walk their way to their own seat or move your body sideways. The aisle is too narrow. But overall, it was fine.

Incredible nice restaurant just a little bit outside the bustling city center. We opted for a 9 course menu and enjoyed every single course. The service was very attentive and the sommerlier did an amazing job suggesting pairing wines. I will definitely come back
Chris L — Google review
Highly recommended to have your lunch here. L’Epuisette is a restaurant right next to Mediterranean Sea. You can see Château d'If by the window seats. The service was nice. We are from Taiwan and waitress said “你好” to us with smile. And the most remarkable was their Aspic of Bouillabaisse which was a aspic reach of the flavor of Bouillabaisse. The second remarkable was “Red mullet, cooked and raw Tomato water and Kimchi butter.” We are from Asia and familiar with Kimchi. I must say this was the best Kimchi dish. The flavor was balanced and really tasty. It was out of the way how Asian use Kimchi in dishes. Really surprised. And the red mullet was cooked perfectly. Finally, the petit four cart was cute. You can choose anything you wanted. Reasonable price, high quality cooking, beautiful sea view.
Chang A — Google review
On a summer sunny day, L’Epuisette was the ideal venue for a lunch by the seaside. Came for the views of the seawater pool through the floor to ceiling windows, left in love for the bouillabaisse menu. Served in 3 difference dish, as a mousse, a soup with croutons and as 5-fish filets in sauce, this iconic and flavorful seafood dish is a must for everyone visiting Marseille. I found myself thinking how this restaurant or then-kiosk by the sea would have been decades and decades ago… times go by, cuisine evolve, only the sea remains the same.
Samuele S — Google review
The ambiance here is amazing. A beautiful view of the ocean and little islands. The service was 10/10 and the presentation of the food 10/10. The drink selection 10/10. However, compared to other seafood Michelin star restaurants I’ve been to I’d give the seafood 8.5/10. I thought the restaurant could have had a better fish selection, sauces, and taste. However, the desserts and cheese were 9.5/10 and had a great selection. But I’m no chef. Overall when you consider the amazing ambiance and service. It is well worth coming here for a visit. I really enjoyed my time here, service, and the food.
Chris R — Google review
Five stars on the services top notch service for everything. The view is perfect and the atmosphere is top. The food is good, but for the price we paid and to be a Michelin star restaurant, I think it could be better. We ate a 7 course meal. We ordered the Bouillabaisse (local dish). I don't mind small portion, which is expected in this kind of place, but the flavours could have been better. Three of our seven meals course tasted like the fish supplement I feed my turtle with. I understand the original bouillabaisse is a fish based soup, but they shouldn't repeat the after taste of their meal with that canned fish flavor. The fish by itself was delicious, but some of the ingredients had a fish based condiment my palate didn't appreciate much The View: 5/5 The Service: 5/5 The Food: 3/5
Olivier L — Google review
The restaurant has an interesting location almost in the water. It really is a seafood restaurant - the Michelin Guide marked it as offering vegetarian options but this cannot be recommended, they simply leave out the fish, often without adjusting the quantity of the rest. I had a regular tasting menu with fish and enjoyed a few clever surprises such as the cocoa seafood foam and the shrimp with its exquisite texture but I cannot say that overall I was wowed - this week I've eaten at several restaurants "only" featuring a Big Gourmand in the Michelin guide that honestly seemed worthier of a star. If you come here during the dark season, lunch probably is best as you then can enjoy what must be a spectacular view of the sea.
Tobias — Google review
We decided to book a table for our 5th anniversary and we were not disappointed. The setting is mind blowing. If you’re going to book a table make sure to check what time is sunset and try to get one by the window. Service was excellent. We chose the 7 course menu, it was a delight, especially the octopus one. Dishes are not extremely surprising but each element of the dish is sophisticated at its maximum and it can be enjoyed individually. The wine menu is extensive. We chose a local 100 eur wine and it was great. Fruity and very pleasant. Prices are very reasonable, around 200 per person.
Jeremias P — Google review
DON'T COME HERE IF YOU'RE ALONE! For some reason they don't see you as a valued customer if you're just one?!? I selected the Cesar which was the top menu ($$$$). I requested advice from the sommelier and had a great recommendation for a glass. I guess buying a glass in this restaurant is not acceptable. I continued to beg for wine, finally gave up. If you want wine service, buy a bottle, maybe he'll pay attention to you 🙄. I was by myself so a bottle is not an option when you want to try a variety of things. They do a HORRIBLE job of telling you where you are in the menu you selected. I heard others asking "how many dishes left?" and "are we done?" You feel a bit lost when you don't understand where you are in your meal. Should I be drinking white or red, etc. The food was good but not amazing and given I was the ignored guest of the night I would not recommend going here as it's very pricey to beg for wine and spend three (3) hours for one person talking to yourself... When I went to leave, even though I asked, it took forever to get the check. Then the Manager argued with me about my experience. He compared me to people arrond me that had a companion sitting with them, talking to eachother. FYI: my experience is just that, my experience. I don't want to stand in the door arguing with you about what you think my experience should have been after spending €220.00. I came alone because my husband doesn't like seafood and I wanted a nice dinner with nice wine. I ended up with a long, lonely experience, with good food, limited wine, being confronted and told I should have enjoyed my loneliness longer. Not a way to end the night... I was completely deflated and just wanted to leave.

History Museums
Marseille History Museum is a treasure trove of the city's 2,600-year history. With over 44,000 exhibits, this educational museum offers a journey through the country's past. From Roman ruins to artifacts from the Middle Ages and ancient history, visitors can explore Marseille's rich heritage for a nominal fee. The museum opened in 1983 and is the first of its kind in France.
I got a chance to visit I the museum for free and I am very glad. It’s one of the most interesting approach to show the marine history of the city through such ship installations I have ever seen. Several levels of the museum guide you through its history. I was a bit disappointed that the latest history (1970s) is not yet available
Kirill M — Google review
In a city that is rich in history, it was very rewarding to find a well planned and presented museum. Enter the grounds through the park (not the shopping mall) to see the layout of the ancient port. Excavated walls and buildings are described on plaques to help visualize. Inside you will proceed from earliest archeological finds to modern day. The modern day presentation is poor and lacking but that isn't why you should go to a history museum, is it. Early on you'll encounter the remains of two ancient ships along with video presentations that can be heard through earphone devices available at the entrance. Models have been build to demonstrate how the ship looked when it was in use. The videos include how it was used, the importance of them to ancient Marseille, and the process of discovering and protecting them. The museum is broken into stages that each have a marker showing the dates and most important events. At each stage, there is an audio and sometimes video explanation to add to the exhibits.

I enjoyed my visit to Marseille's History Museum, displays are laid out thoughtfully and with plenty of space to move around. I especially enjoyed the models of the excavation sites, and the displays of the tombs. It was a little confusing about where to go, I went up the ramp and into the Mall, and then I had to figure out how to get into the Museum! Maybe more signs outside would help.

Entrance is free so that is always nice. The exhibition is somewhat interesting and quite diverse. Some exhibits were missing and there were no captions in English, but overall a nice place to visit. I would not say it is a must visit, but if you have some time to kill go ahead.

It's amazing to recognize the shape of the harbor and see it reoccur in so many paintings, prints, maps, and models. The ruins of the Greek and Roman harbor are in a large fenced area included with the museum. The museum itself contains the remains of boats from that period. When we visited there were also temporary exhibits that added to appreciation of the city, one on photography and another on the game of petanque. Interestingly the museum also opens into an adjustment shopping mall.

Really enjoyed this museum. For a museum without an entry free, with well translated audio guides in English, this was an incredible experience. There is so much effort put in well documenting the entire history of Marseille throughout the museum. We were absolutely delighted spend over 2 hours of informative stories, activities & other engagements. The staff was kind & polite. I would highly recommend it!

Free entry. Large museum. A lot of history. Boat ruins, stones, pottery, etc. Glad I went. Oh, btw, you can exit into a shopping mall if you choose to. Friendly people at the front desk. They even offered to put my small backpack in a locker and gave me the key to retrieve it. Photography was allowed but no flash.

This one was definitely a surprise! I visited because I ran out of things to do while in Marseille and the ticket was free. Considering I usually don't like archological museums, this one really exceeded my expectations. The informations are delivered with well made and detailed audioguides and videos: it is quite a shame that at the time of my visit most of them were under repair. Overall I wouldn't say it's a must, but it's definitely an underrated museum.

Calanque de Sugiton is a stunning narrow inlet with steep limestone cliffs and crystal-clear waters, accessible via a scenic hiking trail. The Tour d'Orient, also known as the belvedere, offers an incredible panoramic view of the calanque and surrounding areas. Visitors can enjoy swimming and snorkeling at sandy and small-pebbled beaches like Saint-Esteve, Sormiou, Sugiton, and En-Vau.
This is a small beautiful calanque with a couple of nice beaches. It's very easy to get here from Marseille, 30-40 minutes walk from Luminy. Due to this fact it suffers from overtourisme, so the Marseille authorities introduced daily quotas in high season - 500 visitors per day. Luckily when I visited this calanque, there were not many people because of the mistral. So I could enjoy it in peace and quiet.

One of the most beautiful Calanques I've ever seen. The view is truely one of the best ! It makes you feel like you're swimming in paradise, on a tropical island !! 🤩🤩🤩

As a longtime traveler, this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. The landscape and water were amazing, but it took a lot of effort to get there, and the area was crowded. Overall, I would recommend it, but be prepared to walk for an hour through uneven and inconvenient paths. P.S. Make sure to wear proper shoes!
Deniz S — Google review
Made a reservation 3 days before. The path is quite easy from the col, just follow the winding road to above the beach. Only the trail from the bottom of the road to the beach is steep. Amazing swimming and jumping from the island!

AWESOME, incredible place to visit, the ambient, the vibes that gives to you. Just hits different. I was in the Calanque de Sugiton, maybe not too much indications, and difficulty medium. Also a little bit dirty, we need to preserve this sites more.

It takes a while to reach on foot, but it’s absolutely worth it. An untouched and unique cove with crystal-clear water and stunning scenery. The place is quite small, so it’s better to go during quieter times. Perfect spot for those looking to connect with nature and enjoy some peace.
Eda Y — Google review
Great views walking done to the sea, great view and atmosphere there. A paradise. The hike is easy and if not used to it you can always take the long way and ignore shortcuts on the road marked with three red points. I started my trip from Kedge BS bus station, where you can arrive with bus 24, 21JET, B1. The trip with bus is not very pleasant and if you can please take 21JET because it has 3 stops compared to the other 2 that have like 20 stops. Take lots of water, some food, sunscreen and maybe a bag for waste as in the National Park there are no bins.

Beautiful sand beach, probably the only one with sand. During the day there are a lot of people and it’s difficult to find a spot - it’s the only problem with this place, but I am not surprise. There is a toilet, changing room and showers. We felt really safe but notice some „watchers” as well. Have to admit that safeguard were patrolling not only the sea but also the beach to solve any potential incidents.

Small sand beach about 15 minutes walk from the city center-port. We were here at the end of March, the weather was sunny and very pleasant. You can sit on benches and have a beautiful view of the islands and boats. There is a possibility to play volleyball or basketball on prepared courts. In the summer I would expect this place to be overcrowded..

Plages du Prado is a popular choice among Marseille's beaches, offering a more tranquil atmosphere compared to some others. This collection of artificial beaches includes Plage du David and Plage de la Vielle Chapelle, making it the largest sandy expanse in the city. Visitors can enjoy swimming and windsurfing while being close to restaurants and parks. The area also provides amenities such as volleyball courts and rock climbing walls, although these may not always be free of charge.
Lovely beach, the water was so clear and the weather was really nice. We spent all day here sun bathing in the really hot weather and occasionally kept going down into the water for a swim to cool off. However had to be really careful of the jelly fish that were floating about!

Visited this beach during mid November. We could go with our dogs and spent a lovely day. The water is shallow so dogs can swim without problems. During summer/high season, this beach is not dog friendly so keep this in mind. Cons: the beach and the sea were very dirty (plastic everywhere) and people left there dirt there as well after having lunch or spending some time with their kids (plastic, tissues, diapers). The Museum of the Roman Docks in Marseille is a historical gem that showcases artifacts and exhibits from the ancient Roman docks and warehouses discovered on the site in 1947. The museum features well-preserved remains of a Roman warehouse, including large earthenware jars used for storing oil, grain, and wine. Additionally, visitors can explore underwater archaeological finds from the waters around Marseille.
I could not believe that a museum can impress me in this way, but here on, it happened. For so many years I live in this city and I finally found time to enjoy an enriching tour. It was good that at the entrance, a back lit panel offers a historiographical information, that allowed me to better understand this unique space.

Harbor
Marseille's Old Port, also known as Vieux Port, holds centuries of history and cultural significance. Established by the Phoenicians around 600 BC, it thrived as a hub for Mediterranean trade and was later integrated into the Roman Empire. The port's forts, Saint-Nicolas and Saint-Jean, stand as guardians with a rich medieval past. Visitors can explore historical buildings from various periods in PACA, including well-preserved Roman structures like amphitheaters and baths.
Don’t miss this place if you visit Marseille in the first time. I visited late June when the summer starts and the temperature is about 33+c during day time. There are seafood restaurants, cafe, Asian restaurants around so you can take some walks and have lunch or dinner.

Tezza J — Google review
The Old Port of Marseille is the vibrant heart of the city — a lively mix of history, culture, and seaside charm. Surrounded by cafes, seafood restaurants, and colorful boats, it’s the perfect place to soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere. From here, you can watch fishermen sell their daily catch, admire the reflections of historic buildings in the water, or hop on a boat to explore the Calanques. The area comes alive at sunset, when the light turns golden and locals gather along the quays. Whether for a morning stroll or an evening aperitif, the Vieux-Port is the soul of Marseille.
Ivy N — Google review

A beautiful vibrant landmark in a city which has much to offer. Walk around it, visit the museums, explore, sample fish dishes in the restaurants around it, go to the fish markets or the Sunday Market , take a boat trip to the Calanques.....
Catherine Y — Google review
The port is the historic and symbolic heart of the city. Originally established around 600 BCE as the harbor of the ancient Greek colony of Massalia, it later became a strategic center for Mediterranean trade and military operations during the Roman Empire. Throughout the Middle Ages and early modern period, the port was a key departure point for Crusaders and a hub for maritime commerce. It underwent significant redevelopment in the 18th century. Although most commercial and industrial port functions moved to the newer Grand Port Maritime in the 1840s, the port has remained a vital civic and historical focal point. Today, it serves primarily fishing boats, private yachts, sightseeing cruises, and ferry services. The semi-circular waterfront is lined with Provençal-style buildings, terrace cafés, restaurants, and shops. It becomes especially atmospheric at sunset.
Seokjin H — Google review
The Vieux-Port of Marseille is truly the heart of the city—vibrant, historic, and full of life. Whether you're walking along the harbor, watching fishing boats come and go, or enjoying a coffee at one of the many cafés, the atmosphere is unforgettable. The views are stunning, especially at sunset when the sky reflects beautifully over the water. Street performers, local markets, and the iconic Notre-Dame de la Garde in the background make it even more magical. It’s the perfect starting point for exploring Marseille and soaking in its rich Mediterranean charm.
Ilox — Google review
It's all going on at the Vieux Port. Le Bateau to visit the Frioul islands, La Navette to get to Point Rouge and L'Estaque, restaurants, museums, the Panier, the Citadel, shopping, the excellent reflective roof, fish market, you get it. Metro station and lots of bus lines, including the 83 which takes you up and down the Corniche. Safe area as long as you take the usual precautions.

Returned here again having visited in 2022 - it’s no longer the same value and the staff were quite rude. My partner was told off by a saleswoman for letting our two year old play with a spinning top in the toy shop. The gentleman staff member had encouraged them to play and then two minutes later an older female staff member told them off, quite rudely and condescendingly. Shortly after while my partner was breast feeding she was encouraged to do so in a private area and not on the floor. Again, in the toy shop. For babies and toddlers. Not a nice environment for either, despite being a toy shop. It was really disappointing as the first visit was so positive but we left feeling quite unwelcome it was a really unpleasant experience. I had been quite excited to return again having enjoyed it in 2022. Just shows how important it is for a business to have the right team working and engaging with their customers and the damage that can be done by staff with a poor attitude. Also everything was considerably more expensive, which also removed the charm and authenticity I’d felt on the first visit. It now feels like tourist trap intent on ripping you off with no care or respect for their customers. Especially those with children. So why have a toy shop??

The beach was very busy, but this was probably because it was still the summer holidays. I found the beach very dirty with cigarette buds everywhere. It’s sad to see people not caring about the state of the beach… maybe this was because it’s the end of the holiday period so they haven’t been able to clean it properly. I’m also quite picky when it comes to beaches and I’ve been lucky enough to visit some extraordinary ones.

Nice park for running or just relaxing, but there was a very nice lake in Winter time, but now in the summer, it’s dry, you can even walk in it.

A nice, large park in Marseille with varied areas. There is a duck pond, Japanese garden, Arab garden, grassy hill area, playground, cafe, and fountain area. Nice for a stroll, run, or hanging out.
Tim M — Google review
This was one of my favorite parks in Marseille before they decided to mess up all around while constructing the new tunnel. They even damaged the lake and now it needs to be drained.

Very beautiful park. Great for walks after work or quick runs if you want a green area. There’s a language exchange group meeting every Saturday, I think.
Josephine K — Google review
Great place for a walk. Lots of different plants. Wild chickens live there. Kids love this place. You can rest or be active there.

Beautiful park. Friendly environment and family welcoming space. This park has very beautiful landscape, activities and publicly available sports facilities for a variety of sports. The park is beautifully designed. There is a small pond with still water green colour due to the water grass l, a bit dirty but nice looking. There are several types of wild birds. There are small water fountains. The benches under the shades of trees are perfect for relaxation and contimplation.

This park is amazing! It's got so many different vegetations from different places and chickens roam freely there. There is a small lake where ducks could swim. Great place to have a picnic, to relax and read a book, for kids to fun and play, as well as to exercise and jog.

Parc Balnéaire du Prado in Marseille is a remarkable seaside park that stretches for 2.2 miles along the coast. It was created in the 1970s using earthworks from excavations for the city's metro, and it offers a range of activities such as swimming beaches, sailing, paddleboarding, mini golf, multi-sport playgrounds, street workout stations, and water sports.

Beach pavillion
Plage de la Batterie is a charming and family-friendly beach located roughly 20 minutes northwest of Marseille's center by car. It features a mix of sandy and pebbly areas, with protected shallow waters making it ideal for a tranquil seaside experience. Adjacent to this beach are other coastal gems like Plage du Fortin and Plage de la Lave, the latter bordering a small marina's breakwater.
There is a small gulf with white sand beach on one side, and rocks on the other

Good but a little small. good for families 🥰👪🏡

Very nice beach with crystal clear water. If you manage to find parking nearby, there is almost nothing to complain about. We visited on a weekday afternoon during peak season and it wasn't too crowded either, although that might be expected. Perhaps just access without your own car can be somewhat problematic.
Tomáš B — Google review
Beautiful spot right next to Marseille 🤩 easy access and lovely sandy beach 🏖️💦🩵🌊
Katerina S — Google review
This sand beach is near the hills of the Cote Bleue. The bridge in the background allows the train bleu to go all along the seafront.
Shyam ( — Google review
One of the best beaches near Marseille. Clean, not crowded, safe, and perfect for families with child

Breathtaking landscape & seascape views.
Medha S — Google review
Very pretty. Clear waters. Soft sand. Rock pools. Parking tricky and lots of steps down to the beach. Cold soft drinks can be purchased from people walking about with cool boxes. No shops or cafes nearby.
