The 26 best free attractions in Gothenburg

Liseberg is an amazing theme park in the middle of Göteborg. You can get here with the tram or bus or even just walk from the train station. The three coasters Helix, Valkyria and Balder are not only world-class, but offer a well-rounded and varied ride lineup. Helix is a must-do and one of the best coasters I've ever been on. Even the smaller coasters Luna and Lisebergbanan were unexpectedly great! Liseberg also has some really strong flat rides. Loki is outstanding, but there is also a nice drop tower, Gerstlauer SkyRoller, S&S Screamin' Swing and many many more. One thing that is really annoying though is the lockers for Valkyria. I was visiting the park alone so I had to put my bag there to ride. I booked a time slot with the virtual queue but couldn't make that time slot because I was told that I had to put the bag into those lockers. However, all of them were occupied. Also the passage between the lockers is super tight and you can't get through at all even if there is just a few people there. Definitely feels like a retrofit and needs a better permament solution. But other than that I really have nothing to complain about here in Liseberg. Definitely worth the trip!

Visited the park just before halloween and thought it was so fun! I did not do any rides, just walked around, but I felt it was still worth it. Decorations for halloween are everywhere, it really puts you in the mood. There arr some nice shops for food and gifts everywhere around, it reslly feels like a fair. Would definitely recommend to stop there for anyone visiting the city, this was beyond expectations!

Scandinavian biggest amusement park., Second time we’re here at the which is perfect for August. Better enter and buy full ride ticket. And there’s concerts almost everyday in summer, I would recommend you to come earlier as you can and enjoy the hole day untill it’s close at 22.0,

Halloween weekend! The best! So many people even with the rain. We still had fun! Totally worth it and we'll definitely go back! I wish they have two days tickets so it's more worth to come and visit all the corners of Liseberg!🙏✨️🎢🎡

Compact but cool theme park. I hadnt been in 20 years but it was a really impressive place. Rollercoasters that the kids adored and a huge range of food and snack options. Great fun!

Definitely worth visiting when in Göteborg. All very well organised and the rides are great and they fell safe too. Helix, Loke, Balder and Valkiria were my favourite. Lots of kiosks with delicious ice creams and hot drinks.

What a lovely fun park in the hearth of Göteborg. We had a lovely Sunday there. In the end of August there weren't too many people so we got in to rollarcoasters easily and without too many lines. The virtual queuing was quite handy as well. My only feedback is on the vegan selection at the area: there weren't too many options. Especially with the sweets: no vegan ice creams or pancakes or anything like that. Or at least we didn't find them. 🧐 Had a funny day, would come again!

One of the largest botanical gardens in Europe. Free admission, with optional donations. It feels more like a vast natural park — almost like a national park — right in the middle of Gothenburg. Perfect for picnics, sunbathing, or hiking up to a small mountain that was recently cleared after being overgrown for decades. Walking here feels like stepping into wild nature. Highly recommended for stress relief.

Well kept charming botanical garden! Its so lush in greenery. Landscaping is stunning! There are plenty of walking paths as well as running. Its a green lush haven from the city. Can easily take the tram. Very much worth the visit!

Like many things in Gothenburg there is construction and/or renovation occurring and the botanical garden is no exception as the glass houses are being replaced and won’t be open until 2030. The map of the garden is a great guide but recommend going to the wild side, Smith Valley and getting to the high point with great views.drop down from here into the rock garden with the waterfall. Definitely worth the visit.

Great place for the weekend - lots of pathways, interesting and unusual plants. There is also a cafe along the way and the gift shop and restrooms. Admission is for free, with possible volunteer contribution. Really worth visiting ! Can’t wait when the greenhouse will be opened.

Really amazing this place, it's so nice and big. I need to visit it one more time in spring to see all the flowers. But beautiful to take a walk in the park.

A lovely place to enjoy nature and take in the colors and scents. Wide variety of plants and flowers. Peaceful, well-maintained. Amazing hiking trails with breathtaking city and nature views. I loved the place!

It is a nice, diverse garden with different sections. It also goes up quite a bit, so be prepared. The mainroad is easy to walk, at some places it gets quite steep. This could be difficult for older people or people with children. Additionally, there are many side ways but there are steps most of the time, so plan accordingly. We couldn't visit the greenhouses because they are under construction (like 50% of the city at the moment, at least it felt like it)

Well located, cheap entrance and free fro under 25, with discounts for students and pensioners. A bit small, but really good content. Located in the riverside with a great view, specially on a sunny day!

The building is charming and the location is amazing but I was not impressed by the exhibition. The cafe downstairs is a beautiful place for summer but the inside sitting place is not quite nice. The food and pastries are so and so. I would go there only for summer terrace viewing the water and sunset, nothing else!

We only went to the cafe, not the museum. The cafe was nice, though the coffee machine was already switched off half an hour before closing. But we had great vegan berry cake with vegan vanilla sauce, and tea. It has a lovely atmosphere, and dogs are welcome.

I went to the cafe/restaurant to buy an ice-cream. I had taken all of two steps into the restaurant before one of the employees blocked with their arms out from going further. Telling me i was not welcome unless i sat down and ate that they had "a shuttle bus of people in and out, taking paper, using the bathroom and that this is not a public space." Needless to say I got my ice-cream in the kiosk down the walkway and recommend you do the same. I can understand not wanting to be a public restroom but I be a customer anywhere where I'm yelled at right after entering.

I went to this part of Gothenburg to see a concert at the Trädgårdsföreningen park in the city centre. The Garden Society building itself was being renovated so I was covered in scaffolding and wind sheets, and it was temporarily closed to the public. The park and gardens outside the building were a wonderful setting for the concert, next to the river. There was a peaceful, relaxed vibe and the Swedish city folk are friendly, sociable and welcoming. It’s an immaculately, clean city.

Garden very well maintained. Abundance of roses. Many hidden paths, benches and well curated areas. Pity Palm House was closed for upgrade. Visited in early September 2025.

Main greenhouse was closed (for renovations) on my visit, but the property was free (no cost) to explore. Property was beautiful and it’s a charming place to explore or relax.

The Garden Society is a very big green complex in the sole city center. It follows all the way the Gota river canal and continues into the next door Kungspark. Garden society consists of several green areas with fountains, flowers, rose garden, kids playground,.... There're many paths running through, as well benches to rest and places to picnic or just lay on the grass. The Palm house is currently closed for renovations. We were there during ACDC concert, so it was packed with fans.

A nice park with beautiful flowers. Just watch your stuff, because there are a lot of engineers and doctors from Middle East and Africa around.

I wasn't sure what to expect of this museum but it was very interesting. I'm not sure how to classify it but the idea of bringing common topics like games or climate change under the light of different cultures is very unique

I am actually kind of disappointed. The museum is very small, they have about 5 showcases each for some 5-6 representative (?) cultural spaces. To be fair, you also have access to the children's exhibition and to the temporary exhibition (which, when I went, was about Mediterranean football fans and consisted of fan articles and some info on how they relate to political issues). Neither were interesting for me. I don't think you can expect people to pay an entry fee of >10€ for that. Also, many interactive parts were not well kept (such as "tie a ribbon" with no ribbons left), the displays that are the only possibility to learn more about the objects in the showcases are unusably slow and the headphones for listening to sounds and explanations were broken more often than not, which further decreased the value you can get from the small exhibition. Apart from that, I was also a bit puzzled by the uncritical representation of missionary work in the Congo, presenting white people as saviours and civilisators and without at least mentioning the brutal suffering during colonial rule.

Some of the media on the exhibits is very interesting and you can stay for a while in each exhibit or just broad through. A lot of info in a relatively small space- not crowded at all, which is nice

Overall, we love this place. The staff are always nice, and the cafe/lunch is always good. The exhibits are usually pretty thoughtful and thorough. 4 stars review because there were exhibit relics still up from 3 years ago (we saw them still there when we went a few weeks ago). The old exhibit pieces were partially torn down and didn’t make sense/were out of place/looked like trash. If I were running this museum (in the second largest city in Sweden, mind you), I would personally not be proud of that part. We still recommend this place and love the peaceful vibe that affords a good learning environment along with the kind staff and good food. I hope they are not having problems.

Wonderful, informative exhibits. Friendly, helpful staff. Plan to spend several hours if you want to see everything - it's a wonderful place to spend time, learn, and interact with others. Will absolutely be returning!

We love going there with our son 1 and half year old. You can get a yearly pass for almost the same price as one time entrance. Overall great place for children of any age - entrance is free up to 18 years old. It's very interactive and exhibits are nicely lit accompanied by music. Maybe not a museum you would expect, exhibits are made for learning to respect other cultures and teach children to be kind. When your child cannot walk and you are not allowed to take stroller, the staff provides you a nice carrier for the baby for free.

True to its name, we had the chance and pleasure to check out the current exhibition, which is about México, with some absolutely beautiful exhibits. Everything was very nicely presented, so I would definitely recommend this museum. Staff was really welcoming and helpful and besides the museum, I really loved the variety of what's on offer in the museum shop. Last, but not least, the lunch buffet looked amazing!!!

Slottsskogen is a beautiful park 🌳. Clean and well-kept, with ice cream stands 🍦 and cafés ☕, and a fantastic playground that’s well equipped with a slide 🛝, obstacle course 🧗, swings 🪂, and much more. Kids can have a great time here for hours on a sunny day ☀️. There’s also a free zoo 🐧🦌 with penguins, moose, and various forest animals 🐿️. In the children’s zoo 🐐, little ones can pet goats, sheep 🐑, and more. During summer, there’s horseback riding 🐎 too. You can walk for hours in the park, simply admiring the beautiful forest 🌲, the lovely sounds 🎶, and the stunning colors of nature 🎨.

An amazing park in the center of a city. Green everywhere, perfectly kept and with some areas with live animals like deers, sheep, chicken, seals or penguins. I guess is an old facility and that swedish would build something bigger for these animals as the space is quite small.

If you love green and trees , that's the place you need. Picnic places, relaxing places. Children's playground.

Astonishing place to visit just few minutes (around 40) from Göteborg through ferry. The fortress is in excellent condition, the visit might take about 2 hours and a stop at the local cafeteria is a must have.

This old castle was an important defence spot for Gothenburg during hundreds of years. It is very well kept and is a great visit for both history lovers or people that likes beautiful nature views. There are toilets at the café on the island and on another spot. There is a small church that is open. You can explore the prisons cells that were used when the island became a prison. Different companies go here for daytrips. Stromma, Styrsöbolaget etc. The boats goes during the summer months.

Great day trip to the fortified island. The trip itself on an old ship is worth to go. There are some personnel dressed like in the times when fortress was active but unfortunately acting only in Swedish.

Min grandfather was responsible for the property in the late 60’s after his retirement from the military. It’s both historical and a lovely day trip near the city center.

It was a small place to visit. Quick tour. I find it interesting how everyone that was there wasn't from this country and spoke English yet the tour wasn't acted out in English? We just went off on our own and enjoyed some ice cream.

Nice place for a short tour. Food was OK, nothing special. We had a short tour of the island, but again, I expected more. There are some really nice views, especially at sundown.

Not as exciting as other castles and you can walk around in an hour. There was a huge crowd on the boat going back. I recommend the smaller boat from K-Sea AB.

Great view towards Goteborg, the river and hisingen... I love the view and the walk around even the trails within the park, great exercise and view... usually you can drive uphill as well.

Absolutely fantastic view. You can walk, cycle, or even drive by car all the way up to the top, where there's a small parking area.

Not good. Buses are supposedly every 30 mins. We waited 40mins at stop no 2 in Gothenburg. They apparently close for lunch between 12-1. That in itself is crazy; why have this when people want to use the bus all day? We looked at the live bus map and the bus stayed at its origin the whole time we were waiting. The route is uninteresting. It wasn't a cheap ride either. Suggest don't bother.

Unforgettable experience. The girl who was the guide was so relaxed, but at the same time so informative and witty.. I enjoyed this tour very very much.. I absolutely recommend it if you come to Gothenburg.

One of the usual hop on and hop off boats you will find in Scandinavia. The boat goes all around the channel around Gothenburg city center and takes a longer trip (about half of the tour) on the Fjord where there is quite a breeze (August) and you may get some spray water from the bot crossing the river/fjord, so be sure to sit in the back and take a jacket! You will get some nice infos on the history of Gothenburg, so it’s worth Eile! If you plan to do some more sightseeing be sure to use the Go City app, as it will save you quite a few bucks on the fees!

The boat tour was very good, but DO NOT BUY THE HOP ON HOP OFF BUS TICKETS FROM THIS COMPANY AS THEY ARE TRULY HORRIBLE!!! Super late or totally non-existent buses, inaccurate maps, complete lies about when and where they’ll pick up, phone number on ticket leads to utterly clueless and incompetent human. Complete waste of $45 USD!

A fantastic space with many resources and a super helpful staff. We were visiting and read about the maker space in the basement. The staff was kind enough to allow us the use of a sewing machine for a short time. If we lived in Gothenburg we would spend a lot of time here.

Probably the best library in Gothenburg city. Spacious library with silent rooms, group rooms, cafe, toilets and kids zone. It has 3 floors full of books. Just 2 minutes walk from Götaplatsen or Berzeliigatan station. There are regular events - language cafe, art exhibitions and trainings.

Review: Libraries can indeed be gateways to another universe, and the Gothenburg city library stands as a prime example. Visiting this library was a genuine revelation for me. The interior, the ambiance, the choice of literature — everything is top-notch. I was amazed by the diversity of the collections and the coziness that permeates inside. Each book feels special, as if whispering, "Pick me up, read me!" I strongly recommend everyone to visit this temple of literature, even if you have just an hour to spare. I guarantee that you'll not only be pleased but will also discover a new literary gem that will stay with you for a lifetime.

I really appreciate having access to so many books and a place to read, study or hang out with my friends but the library app is really bad, it often takes forever to load and when I wanted to reserve a book, it wouldn't let me choose location to pick it up so as a result I was unable to make a reservation and the same error would repeat itself in spite of my having exited and opened the app over and over again (until I did it via website). Please take this issue (I mean the app not working properly in general) into consideration!

Gothenburg municipal library is the biggest public library in Gothenburg city. It is located in the center of the city, next to the art museum. The design of the library is artistic. It’s very spacious inside. All the books are categorized probably with labels. There is a cafe bar (Roots café) inside, and the prices are inexpensive. Everyone is free to come in, having a seat and enjoying a relaxing studying time with free wifi and plug sockets.

We were just travelers visiting with our little one and love checking out local libraries. While we were happy to visit, we also left a bit disappointed. The children’s corner is large but spread into different areas. There’s a carpeted zone where you take off your shoes, with soft mats and a little runway - my child loved running there until a staff member asked us not to, even though it feels designed for kids. Looking at older photos, there seemed to be more toys in this area; now it felt rather empty. Drawing tables exist, but no paper or pencils are readily available - you have to ask staff for supplies. There’s also a small room with games, Duplo, wooden blocks, magnetic tiles, and more, but it lacks a cozy carpeted space to play. Why not move them to the carpet area? This library has huge potential for children, but in its current state, it felt rather disappointing.

An amazing sauna space with a couple of cold plunge pools (only 1 is open during the winter season), the plunge pool was 9°c when we visited 🥶 The view from the sauna is immense. Jubileumsparken is in an old industrial area I guess but it's well worth the trip and just a short ride away on one of the many available city bikes! You have to book the sauna but I think anyone can visit the pool areas. The changing area for the sauna/pool is really good too, better than my own bathroom 😆

The park is quite expansive with kids play park. We were staying in the nearby Waterfront apartments and stopped by at the free outdoor swimming pools on the river for a plunge. We also hired pay as you go bikes from the park. Would recommend for easy access into, around and out of the city centre. Good bus links too.

A nice option for a free Swedish sauna experience. This old building has been redesigned after its end of era port function. No longer mooring ships it’s now a unique building housing an architectural designed sauna.

The staff is super nice and the facilities too.

Lekplats till barnen - Great children’s play area Many activities for children slides, seesaw, swings, sand. Good place for weekends and sitting area with benches to have lunch/dinner. This is a new park opened in fall2022. The highlight would be the mini-golf area which has mot opened yet but should open in a few months. There is a cafe place where people can buy coffee, tea, soda, ice-cream, etc

A unique team activity for students

Best place in GBG amazing staff and easily accessible rooms and very easy to book the staff will sometimes give you extra time. However there was some components in some rooms that were not working.

There's a lot of fun to be had here. Challenging puzzles, both physically and mentally, and lots of opportunities for getting a work out and a lot of laughs in. In order for me to give the highest score, it would have to have been a bit cleaner in the "cells", and the puzzles should have come with an explanation if needed. It would also have been nice if leaving your stuff on a locker was free, and some air conditioning would have been appreciated. (You get hot when you're trying to prove to yourself that pushing fourty doesn't mean you can't keep up with a ten year old. 😅) Highlights from our visit: -Getting to tell our son how much money we spent on pinball machines as kids. -Bombarding eachother with gigantic exercise balls. -When my husband and son told me to lean against the wall while I was climbing a narrow ledge, which prompted this response from me: "I HAVE BREASTS!" 😅

Really amazing to visit, especially in teams. Lots of brain games so probably not best place with too young kids. The games required skills, talent, technique, knowledge, and physical workout. Best is if you can take out 2 hours to visit, else you may not be able to solve all the rooms.

Came here as an ending to a class trip, and everyone really liked it! A taco buffet to start and then came the ninenty-minute experience of trying to beat as many rooms as possible! Great fun but also a challenge. Would absolutely go here again.

Must do on your bucket list! I've never had so much fun as I did going there, in the beginning we went for an hour, we stayed 2 hours extra. Had plenty of stuff to do there, and was enjoying every minute of my time due to the to crazy amount of rooms there. I recommend this place to anyone who is 10+ years old, this is a everlasting experience!!! 😃 The cinnamon rolls they prepare on spot are delicious!!!🤤

Small cinema with 3 cinema rooms. The best part is the pub bistro

Though this is a movie heaven for Literature and Art type! However the experience is very much below the average quality of cinema and saloon in Sweden! Including the screen, seats, arrangements, atmosphere, canteen! Please upgrade!

Service here sucks. Which is a shame because it is one of the nicest places to sit with a drink in all of Gothenburg in the summer. You can't order at the bar but the poor waiting staff has so many tables to keep tabs on that it must be impossible. We sat for 20 minutes, finally got to order, then after another 20 where it definitely wasn't going to ever arrive (plenty of others who ordered after us had gotten their drinks) just up and left. Not the waiter's fault, the system is dumb and judging by other negative reviews it clearly doesn't work.

Loved it here. It's a fun mix of a cinema and a bar/restaurant where you can get very good vegetarian dishes. Very unique place

Cozy place, this time we came on a freezing cold day and set inside. Music from the 50s, dark warm and cozy. They offer very few main courses, all extremely good. Prices are reasonable, you pay when you order. They only have Swedish menu but they are kind enough to translate it. I ate there few times and enjoyed each time.

Very very good vegetarian food and a nice place to take a beer or a glass of wine. There is some room for improvement with the outdoor seatings. But it's a rustic place where you will have a good evening. Really recommend their vegetarian loaf!

Such a lovely, peaceful place. Even in November there is much to see. Lots of hidden twisty paths taking you to secluded spots. Plenty of benches to sit and contemplate nature. And all for free. The suggested voluntary donation is less than the price of a coffee. The glasshouses that are at present in construction look awesome already. Well worth a visit.

Ate sth small for lunch here. It was good, prices are ok but unfortunately the salad came without sauce. I know this is typical in Sweden but I am surprised everytime. Would just be a lot better with some salad sauce. The bread especially the sourdough rye bread is one of the best in/around Gothenburg!

Beautiful. We had 2 groups because we had so many people and we had 2 very different tours. One was very dry with basic facts but nothing really interesting. The other group had a different tour guide that gave all kinds of fun information in addition to the basic facts.

One of the best places I've gone to in Gothenburg! The place is very peaceful and the nature is absolutely beautiful! You can have a very nice long around and will never get bored of the breathtaking view. I would only go there in summer or when it's sunny and not rainy tho :)

A most interesting garden and beautiful landscape. The house and garden are a very good example of how the Swedish have imported and interpreted foreign fashions from Italy, France and England in the 18th and 19th century. Very nice kitchen gardens where you can learn a lot from the maps of plantings. Nice cafe, restaurant and boutique. I really liked my stay with family and friends.

Disappointing Julbord experience unfortunately. Unorganised reception, mediocre menu for the price & offensive serving for wine package. The food was fine, edible but forgettable. 695kr per person gets you Raw Carrot Salad & pumpkin purée (cold dish) Egg cream pickled vegetables & smoked fish (Cold dish) Wild Board cabbage lentils tomatoes white sauce (Warm dish) Like I said, food was ok but the serving portions for the 395kr wine package was upsetting. 395kr gets you 3 glasses of lovely natural wines. It’s just such a shame a serving is not even half a glass. The 3 “glasses” served would make up 1 glass really. Beautiful surroundings, cosy restaurant, disappointing experience for Christmas. 5/10

Had a great tasting saffron and honey ice cream. Place gets crowded in the summer but has a good token based queuing system which works quite well. Also has ice cream cakes, take away containers and a good seating places.

Classic Swedish kafé but with ice cream instead. Had seating to be real busy but wasn't when we came in the opening hour.

Decent amount of flavors, nice staff and efficient quing system. The decore is a bit cold, but clean and matches the label well with the blue and white.

I had a great experience with Linda who ordered my furniture. Unfortunately things were ordered in the wrong sizes (larger fitted sheets, too small duvet sheets, single pillow case, etc.), and the seller was the one responsible for ordering. Additionally, I had a terrible experience with delivery (JetPak) as they failed to deliver THREE times to my location as they did not wait for me and drove away. This ended up causing me to not have furniture for an additional 2-3 weeks and sleeping on the floor. I moved here from over seas.

The best view of Gothenburg city can be seen from the top of this mountain. The closest bus stations are Ramberget and Lantmannagatan. You have to hike for about 15 minutes. Accessible by car. There's a public toilet up in the top.

One of favourite spots in Gothenburg! Beautiful in every season of the year, best to come during evening in end of summer (late August, early September) when there are sheep, all the place turn violet and there is amazing evening sky

This is a great place to go for a walk, run or to bike! Lovely Swedish nature and here and there you find some interesting flowers and trees on places that are taken care of by Gothenburgs botanical garden.

A beautiful nature reserve close to the central parts of Gothenburg. Here you can connect with the forest, take a quick stroll up the hill from the botanical garden, take a long walk or go trail running. Popular place for trail and ultrarunners to get in some elevation because there is a lot of good trails and never flat, so you can easily get a hard workout here.

Took the steep path from Toltorp up to the Västerberget and was stunned how quick you leave behind the urban environment and find yourself in the midst of nature.

A park in the middle of the city life. This place is one of the reason I like Gothenburg. The swings and scooters are really enjoyable. I spent most of the time in this play ground by playing with these tools as a man who's 33 ;)

Simply a gorgeous experience to wander through the park. During the week it’s very relaxed and peaceful. And the beauty is all around. They have done so much here, with flowers nicely placed, trees given proper space, the way the canal flows through - just magical. Unlike some other European parks, there were people having picnics, some folks seemed to be on their lunch break having a nature moment, and lots of elderly truly enjoying their amazing park in their amazing city. I believe no European tour is complete without strolls through parks, and Kungsparken is world class. So peaceful. Inviting and charming. And the sense that people love it here radiates throughout. Goteberg is a great city; and the residents take a lot of pride here. And this park is a well-cared example of their civic pride.

Lovely park by the canal. Well worth a walk though if visiting the city or just wanting somewhere for a walk or sit. Nice views, lots of green spaces and local nature to enjoy. Recommended.

An oasis, following the moat. This used to be part of the outer fortifications. On the south side of the moat, there were embankments and other constructions to protect the city. There are a lot of trees that are over 200 years old. According to a contract from 1807, it is forbidden to chop down the trees, and they are to be taken care of to time indefinitely, something that has become a headache during the construction of "Västlänken". This is a true gem in Gothenburg! Take your time to enjoy it, read about it's history and - give the trees some love!
