Mountain peak
Nature & Parks
Mountains
Mount Takao, also known as Takaosan, is a 599-meter-tall peak located within an hour of Shinjuku station in Tokyo. It has been a pilgrimage site for over 1,200 years and offers a mix of traditional Japanese culture and natural beauty. Visitors can enjoy hiking trails, a funicular railway, and the opportunity to visit the Yakuo-in temple. The summit provides stunning views of Tokyo and Mount Fuji on clear days.
I highly recommend coming out to this mountain it offers a perfect mix of natural beauty, peaceful hiking, and cultural exploration. The views from various points are absolutely stunning, and you’ll come across several gorgeous shrines along the trails that are well worth stopping at. There's also a charming little suspension bridge that adds to the overall charm. The mountain has multiple trail options, all falling in the easy to medium range in terms of difficulty. None of them are intense, and many are shaded, making them a great choice even in the summer heat. There are also plenty of rest spots, vending machines scattered along the way, and small eating areas where you can grab a quick snack or cool drink. One of the best features is the choice between taking a cable car or a chairlift. I personally suggest doing one on the way up and the other on the way down, so you get to experience both. I especially loved the chairlift coming down—it gave a breezy, peaceful end to the hike. Just note that if you go early in the morning, the chairlifts might not be operating yet, so starting with the cable car may be your best option. Another important tip: chairlift stop running at 16:30 so plan accordingly if you're heading up later in the day. All in all, this mountain is a 10 out of 10 for me. It’s a perfect morning hike that offers incredible views, peaceful shrines, and multiple ways to tailor your experience depending on your mood and pace. A must-visit.

Just a short trip from Tokyo, Mount Takao offers a peaceful escape from the city’s noise. Surrounded by calm nature and fresh mountain air, it’s the perfect place to find silence, refresh your tired soul, and reconnect with yourself.
Santosh P — Google review
The perfect plan for those who like nature and enjoy walking….it’s only 1 hour outside Tokyo and a lot of things to see and eat there. We decided to take the trail 1 (the easiest) to go up and took the lift in our way down! But the cable car is also available.
Abigail G — Google review
Beautiful payoff for what amounts to be a 45 minute walk. Paved paths with excellent three color leaves during fall (November 2025). Some crowds but manageable. The secret to getting the coveted photo is to ensure that Mount Fuji shows clear or lightly clouded skies before hiking up here. I have some examples of potential photos below.
Justus U — Google review
Solo trip on weekdays. Not so crowded. Use Trail 1 for the easiest route. 980 yen round trip for cable car but do go for the chair lift instead. Date 26/11. Fall leaves almost gone but its still beautiful to see.
N F — Google review
Very Beautiful in Fall season! 1 hour from shinjuku After hiking and chairlifts experience, you can go to relax at the onsen right at the train station. Very affordable Wonderful day-trip experience here!
Pattira C — Google review
11/21/25 What a relaxing day enjoying autumn’s beauty at Mt. Takao. Was a weekday but still crowded You can take the cable car or chair lift from Kiyotaki Station to save your feet or just go for a hike and enjoy nature.
Nes — Google review
Absolutely take an autumnal break here from Tokyo. Simple to get to by train, less than 90 mins. Either hike or pop up Mt Takao on a funicular or chairlift. Then walk around the environment seeing all the shrines and temple. Reserve lunch with the monks and get your goishon before 4pm. Come down and spend time in the onsen at the train station. Fabulous and so doable in the day.

Hachiōji Castle Ruins, nestled in the mountains near Tokyo, is a historic site with shrines and monuments scattered throughout the surrounding forest. Built in the 16th century by Ujiteru, it has been recognized as one of Japan's top 100 castles. The vast area with varying elevations makes comfortable attire advisable for visitors.
Great view of Hachioji from up top. The hike is slightly challenging but many elderly people we met had no problem getting up and down. Also the whole place has a calm ambience to it.
Gerron S — Google review
This hachioji castle remains site is about one hour train ride from Tokyo and there’s a bus available during weekends all the way to the museum where the hiking trails starts. There are buses during weekdays but only stop at cemetery entrance. From this point to the trails about 14 minutes walk. Don’t forget to stop by the information center where guides are available but probably only limited English speaking guides. Trails are absolutely beautiful. There are two trails and not connected. We only did a short one by the creek because was hoping to meet the sankouchou paradise flycatcher. But according to the guide this year probably not able to see. So far there’s no sightings yet.
Satsuki H — Google review
Spent a glorious and sunny Saturday exploring the peaceful forest and important cultural site via the Hachioji Castle Ruins Loop found on All Trails app. We used Google maps to locate site and found the free parking lot opened at 9:00 am. There is a restroom, maps and very sweet volunteer at the drink stand offering advice for hike or visit to ruins. Enjoyed the cool forest and birding, the various markers and monuments, and a picnic lunch we brought along. At the summit there is a view of Mt Fuji and a resting area. From the drink stand we took the trail on the right and walked counter clockwise ending up at the ruins by early afternoon. The trail was not too difficult but use caution as it could get slippery in rainy season. Highly recommend for an enjoyable day of exercise and cultural exploration.

It was quite a walk up the top of the hill, but not a difficult one. It takes about 2.3km and 495m up to the Honmaru one way if you don’t wander any further. The Honmaru is just up the stairs next to the Shrine on top. Unfortunately there aren’t much to see in general.
Kenny C — Google review
Great place to visit! I walked on foot from Takao Station... The road is wonderful. Many shrines and beautiful gardens, trees, houses. Hachioji Castle is not yet a castle, even ruins... Just stones and stairs and bridges. But the air is full of history. The forest have many to tell. And the waterfall is wonderful.
Alexandru N — Google review
I loved this place. Although there isn't that much of the castle to see here, the whole site had a fantastic, slightly mournful atmosphere. The hike up the hill to the inner bailey (本丸) was more steep and irregular than I expected, so do wear sensible shoes and expect a demanding walk.
Dušan F — Google review
Not what I was expecting, but still worth the little hike.
Traveling W — Google review
Beautiful place for a hike. Many shrines and signs to tell you about the area. We'll definitely be back to hike more. Internet service wasn't great (which is usually a huge plus!) So pick up a guide from the office in your preferred language as all signs are in Japanese.

Tokyo Fuji Art Museum, situated near Soka University in Hachioji, is renowned for its extensive collection of Western oil paintings spanning 500 years. The museum's collaboration with the university has led to a diverse range of educational activities for students, including workshops, lectures, and concerts. Established in 1983 by Soka Gakkai president Daisaku Ikeda, the museum houses a vast array of Western and Japanese artworks such as paintings, ceramics, and sculptures from various centuries.
Went and saw lots of stuff. The special exhibits was that impressionist stuff from USA. Very impressive. Clean toilets. Happy chappy.
O D — Google review
I went here for the Man Ray exhibition. The bus from Hachioji Station NORTH exit was very convenient. Some of the works on display from the permanent collection were impressive. There was also an excellent exhibition of Kertesz photos. Viewing was not impeded by hordes of people. Ice cream in the cafe was very good. Lunch was a little disappointing: goulash without cumin? If you find yourself in this remote corner of Tokyo, it's worth checking out.
A U — Google review
This charming museum is one and half an hour public transport away from Tokyo. They do not have English translations but they arrange the show beautifully. Their cafe has really good food. It was not crowded when I visited.
Sara K — Google review
There were so many exhibits. The first building I went in was the Asian Gallery and it had 6 levels of exhibits. The Japanese Gallery had a lot as well but definitely not as much. If you stop and read most of the information on each piece, it’s easily an all day experience.
David K — Google review
Nice museum with several famous pieces and seasonal exhibits. Free parking & reasonable pricing for the collection. We didn't receive a brochure to navigate the exhibits so it was a little confusing but other than that it was very enjoyable.
J G — Google review
Didn't expect their collection albeit small: a lot of renowned masterpieces from the Renaissance to modern art (I especially went crazy for their Neo-classicals: Ingres, Delacroix and Gericault). A bit far from Hachioji station and not much restaurants around to choose from.
Tiziano — Google review
I highly recommend this museum if you’re interested in seeing rare, world-class artifacts and art pieces that are usually not accessible to the public. I’ve visited many times, and it never fails to amaze me. Each special exhibition is truly one of a kind and memorable beyond words. In recent memory, I especially recall seeing Monet’s Water Lilies — an unforgettable experience. This is a museum you must visit at least once in your lifetime!

The exhibitions are fantastic. I spent 3 hours to see all the paintings. Museum cafe was nice and cozy.

TAKAO 599 Museum, located at the trailhead of Mount Takao, is a multifaceted sightseeing facility that offers an educational and interactive experience for visitors. Opened in August 2015, the museum aims to showcase the vibrant ecosystem, history, and culture of Mount Takao while providing insights into its ecological significance. The exhibits feature information on seasonal attractions, local wildlife such as boars and tanuki, as well as samples of seasonal flora and insects.
Such an amazing project of education, art, design and understanding of nature. The museum is lovely and absolutely a must. It’s very close to the station so I suggest to visit as soon as you arrive. Museum products are also beautiful and well curated. If you check the schedule they also organize many events and lectures.
Aya — Google review
I really enjoyed this small, free, very modern looking museum. Displays of the different types of animals that can be found on Mount Takao. Cases filled with different insects. A short video presentation on the hour. One small stamp at the entryway.
David B — Google review
Went to the cafe for a quick coffee break. The place was elegant and a great stopover. I wish I had more time to view the museum also.
Jamie — Google review
After the hiking, I stopped by the Museum for coffee with a great view. It is a free admission, a lot of exhibits about nature of Mt. Takao here. I would recommend to make a stop here while you visiting Takao 😊
Wendy N — Google review
Great small museum showcasing the local area in both geography and plants/animals/insects. Really nice displays making it easy to see everything and a wall with local animals. Also has a coffee shop and a small shop. Easy access from the station with good toilets and friendly staff. Highly recommend.
Peter S — Google review
Great information and insights about the nature and insect/animal lives on Mount Takao before or after your hike. Exhibits are beautifully presented and the space is nicely illuminated with ample sunlight entering the space. There is a cozy cafe inside the museum with great coffee. Air conditioning is comfortable and there are seats around for you to just take a rest.
Alvin C — Google review
This museum is not just beautiful but the permanent exhibition is well organised. It has a bountiful amount of flora and fauna. As well as local animals around and in Takao-san. It also has a short video playing an intervals. It is wonderfully made and you will be able to listen to the song dedicated to the area. I particularly enjoyed the information provided at the museum. And general admission is free.
Valerie S — Google review
Modern, neat, spacious and free museum! Petrified animals, insects and plants are just amazing. It’s a great opportunity to observe this species closely and study them. Additionally, there is a cafeteria and gift shop.

Takiyama Castle Ruins, located in Takiyama Park hills, is a 1500s historic site. The castle was strategically built using the natural topography and stood as the main castle of Hojo Ujiteru. It boasted being the largest scale castle in the Kanto area. Visitors can explore the ruins and learn about its history while enjoying various events held throughout the year in Hachioji city.
Free parking close by and a nice little hike at the site of the former castle.
Ken B — Google review
Takiyama castle ruins are a nice and quiet place to go and chill out. There's multiple sites but unfortunately most of the signs about the ruins are in Japanese. You can get a great view of the city across the river from a resting place. Behind it is a small serene farming area with a lot of plantations. When going down towards the river be careful as the stones are smoothed out nicely so they are really slippery.
Finite T — Google review
There isn’t a castle here, it is more of a site than a ruins. The cherry blossoms are stunning in season. Lots of nice walking paths. Limited English translation. Views are nice. Use the parking lot down next to the sports field. It’s all free.
Erin W — Google review
The whole area is a great place for a morning run (but a little bit challenging up the hills). A few spots overlooking outer Tokyo.
Gerron S — Google review
Judging by the name, I was kind of expecting to see at least some castle ruins but there's essentially nothing left of the castle aside from the ground where it once stood. Still, it's a lovely location for a longer walk and also really nice place to take your lunch at. ”Ascending” to the actual place was a little tiring but looking back, I'm pretty sure I took a wrong (and unnecessary long) path uphill - nevertheless, I nice small trip location!
Alice — Google review
Atmospheric 16-century ruins on the 100 famous Japanese castles (...'continued') list. The are some reconstructed buildings but it's mainly earthwork moats. The AR app they suggest you download was surprisingly informative and it was a good walk following the paper map around the site.
Dušan F — Google review
Very easily accessible place, just a little walk up a track, that doesn’t take long. The walk is also very relaxing and the rebuilt bridge in the ruins makes it slightly unique.
Kenny C — Google review
Impressive location for a castle situated on a ridge between the Tama and the Yaji River. Only moats and several kuruwa survived. The castle even withstood an attack by Takeda Shingen.

Takaosan Yakuōin Yukiji Temple, located on a sacred mountain in Tokyo, was established in the mid-8th century and is known for its well-preserved natural forest. The temple features tengu statues and offers a serene setting for visitors to explore. Additionally, the area surrounding the temple is designated as Meiji-no-Mori Takao National Park. Visitors can enjoy a variety of local treats from nearby shops, such as toasted dumplings with walnut miso sauce.
My photos suck compared to pro social media influencers, so don't focus too on the shoots. This is a review of both the Mountain and the temples. The mountain is about 600m high. You can easily burn at least 500 calories tracking on this 2.6km+ trail. If you don't use the non-free cable rail of course. Probably the least busiest and most quietist up here. When you reach the peak, you get to see other mountains and an overview of Tokyo city from the horizon. They even have binoculars you pay 100 yen to use but your phone might zoom in better these days. Food and drinks await half way for refreshments and laventries. And theres also an observatory up ahead too. Almost forgot about the Shinto Buddhist temples that are part of Japan's heritage now. You can trail through it to enjoy the nice healing spiritual energies as you journey to reach the top. Note they do close at 4pm though so you need to go around to reach the top. Don't stay out too late though or else it gets too dark and mosquitoes will bite you (some parts of the trail are not lit). So hike carefully as it can also be slippery at inclinations on wet days.
Vinh D — Google review
Recommended to do in the Autumn. Stunning red leaves add to the charm. Lots of spots to admire the Buddhist spirit and craft. Recommend going in the afternoon, it's much quieter. Enjoy both cable and chairlift rides. Only 80mins from central Tokyo. Make time to go to the Onsen at the train station.
Jean K — Google review
Had a great time, the shrines were beautiful, the climb easy (did trail 1). In the summer the cool air of the trees makes it more enjoyable. The cable car was really enjoyable, felt like I was in a Ghibli movie. It’s apparently the steepest cable car in Japan. There are 3 Goshuins to choose from (depends which counter you go to) but the red stamps are the same, only the writing changes.
Olympe — Google review
Easier to reach than anticipated because of the cable car and chairlift! Still lots of stairs but worth the hike for the views :)
Evie L — Google review
A pretty cool little temple in the town at the feet of Mt Takao. Not the best I’ve seen but it’s decent and the sculptures are rather nice too.
Blazej K — Google review
Interesting place. Lots of walking. Stunning views.
Rina ( — Google review
Nice hike close to Tokyo about an hour from central, lots of beautiful temples and shrines and feels really good to be walking amongst nature. Family friendly, you can choose to go up and down by cable car or hike up with many different trails with varying difficulty. Going in summer can be very challenging due to the heat and humidity even on the easiest track (track 1), and is actually a bit steep. While the walk itself was nice, the view at the end was underwhelming but maybe that was because of the cloudy weather.
Wannachai B — Google review
Beautiful colours, setting is so calm and lovely. Definitely an easy rute to climb although there are many stairs.

Nestled in the scenic Mount Takao, the Mount Takao Trick Art Museum offers an immersive experience with its collection of unusual optical-illusion paintings and 3D art. Visitors flock to this popular destination for its unique photo opportunities that go beyond typical selfies, thanks to the museum's friendly staff who are always on hand to assist with capturing memorable shots. Even outside of peak seasons like autumn, tourists can enjoy the stunning mountain scenery and explore the art museum for a refreshing and picturesque experience.
It’s a nice place to go with your kids, kids learn about technology, education & information in the same place. During weekdays it not so crowded. We could enjoy our trip inside the museum, so much fun & a nice place to create good memories with your children. Then they gave us free drink once we out of museum.

It’s bigger than the first impression. There are 4 floors. You must find something interesting there. The instructions are in Japanese and English. Ticker is sold on arrival.

This will be worth your while. JPY1,500ish (1,560 or so?) per adult. At a glance, they don't look that impressive but as you move on, you will definitely enjoy some of the settings and make great photo shoots for your family and friends. You will get a complimentary drink and have a cuppa at the exit balcony area, overseeing the Takaosanguchi train station and the mountain at the back.
Josh J — Google review
I can see that this place is targeted to kids and young people in general, so I will give it a decent grade. But, I have to think adults like myself will not be very enthusiastic about this place unless they are accompanied by kids. Well done for what it is.
Charlie S — Google review
The staff were really friendly. The place was okay. But the art at Odaiba Trick Art Museum is so much better. Here the rooms are small so you don’t have the space for the perspective to work as it should. On top of that the places marked to stand to take the photos is right in front of the door so people just keep walking in front of you. It was busy and we found most people were just plain rude and would actually just push the children out of the way as they were trying to explore the art. There’s a lot more variety of various art than at odaiba so maybe on a quieter day it would have been much better. However, today I can’t say I enjoyed the experience.

Must go to!!!!! Such a fun musuem!!! Take a friend alone so you can take all the cool photos since it needs to be done on an angle and not as a selfie! Staff were super friendly and took some photos for me since I was a solo traveler! Will be going to more of these Trick Art musuems!!! The art was so fun!!! The path was available in Japanese and English. Have fun getting lost and confused!!! With your entrance fee you get a token for a free drink at the end. *hiked Mt. If you're looking for a unique beer garden experience, Beer Mount on Mt. Takao is the place to be. Situated 500 meters above sea level, it's the highest beer garden in Tokyo and offers stunning panoramic views of the city. After a refreshing hike up the mountain, treat yourself to unlimited beer and delicious food while taking in the breathtaking scenery. The best time to visit is between June and October.
Good all you can eat and drink buffet. Plenty of seats if a nice day cause you can sit outside and on other decks for views. If you want inside and good view make a reservation....especially if raining. Good variety of food and had typical Japanese beers and drinks. I really enjoyed relaxing outside looking across the valley. Oh didn't rate service as it's a buffet...but the people preparing foods and drinks were very nice.

We went there because we went to claim Takaosan and wanna end up with BBQ We reserved in advance which you no need to do it. It costs around 4,300 and we plus all you can drink (soft drinks +600) Price is acceptable and staffs are very friendly! Recommend one!

3900¥ adult for all you can eat and alcohol drink. 3200¥ for soda and no alcohol per an adult. We hiked all around and made this our last stop to enjoy the food more😂 I loved the mabu tofu and dumplings! Great place to end a hike so you're hungry and a cold beer is always best after a hike! There were multiple food, alcohol and soda options.
Yuuki A — Google review
Decent for a first time visit, but I probably won't return Food and drinks are average, it's all-you-can-eat/drink Service is fine but limited, as it's basically self-serve View is nice, if weather cooperates Location is far away from Tokyo centre, takes roughly 3 trains and a cable car.. Overall only worth the trip the first time
Asim H — Google review
Good place to rest and refill. It's all you can eat. It has a great variety of beers to choose. Nice view of the valley below.
Martin C — Google review
I bought the Tengu hotdog for ¥700. The taste was average and the footlong was long (of course). Though it’s not worth the price, I understand that it’s on top of the mountain. The good things are there is free tap water; They have ketchup and mustard station so you can put any as much as you want, and the atmosphere was good! But if you’re not that hungry, there are cheaper food stalls at the bottom of Mt. Takao.

Great spot to come on a weekday to escape the crowds. Cold beer and a great view. Helpful staff. Don't need to read Japanese to figure out what time you have to leave before being charged extra, it is right there in numbers on your ticket. Not hard to comprehend even for a tourist

No craft beer, only your standard nomihodai beer. Kind of disappointed by that with a few craft breweries around the area. The food was good though.

With over 100 stores in a French-inspired two-story townscape, shoppers can enjoy additional discounts at 39 tax-free stores including renowned brands like Michael Kors, Beams Outlet, and adidas. The mall also caters to plant and animal enthusiasts with shops selling gardening and pet supplies.
Walk-around and start scanning some great deals here. You might find some good bargain 👍🏻. Few brands offer great deals such as Vans, Nike, etc...

Today, I had a very unpleasant experience at a Levi’s store. The male staff member (a well-built man who seemed to be wearing glasses) said nothing during the checkout. Less than ten minutes later, I asked for a refund, but he told me that their store does not accept refunds unless the item is defective. Is there really any Levi’s store or major outlet in the world that refuses a return within just ten minutes? Since it seemed impossible to communicate with that staff member, I went to the customer service desk and explained the situation. The customer service representative told me that the receipt clearly states that returns are accepted. The customer service desk then contacted the Levi’s store on my behalf, and only after receiving their call did the staff member finally process my refund. Although I felt very uncomfortable as a traveler, I still thanked him before leaving the store — but he didn’t even respond or say goodbye. Instead, I could hear him mumbling something behind me. As an overseas visitor, I was extremely disappointed and offended. I sincerely hope that staff training will be properly reinforced.

It's easy to walk around and there aren't as many people as outside the city, which might be because there are many places selling products.

This outlet is conveniently linked to several malls, offering a wide array of shopping options. If you can't find what you're looking for in one mall, you can easily stroll over to another nearby. However, it's worth noting that the outlet prices may not be prominently displayed. Therefore, it's advisable to inquire / check about any available discounts or promotions to make the most of your shopping experience.
00Y — Google review
The outlet is right next to the metro station so it's very convenient. There are many local Japanese brands which offers good price. The most surprising thing to us is there's even a glasses store which the frams price is very reasonable and you could pick up your glasses in an hour's time. Food wise, you could either dine in the restaurant within the outlet area, or could just walk for a minute back to the train station where there's a shopping mall with many other food option.

Ukai Toriyama is a unique dining destination nestled in the scenic surroundings of Western Tokyo's Tama area, close to Mt. Takao. The restaurant offers a specialized menu featuring charcoal-grilled skewered chicken known as yakitori, along with unconventional dishes like carp sushi. Set amidst traditional Japanese gardens, the restaurant provides a serene and nostalgic atmosphere with its architecture, mini waterfalls, and wooden bridges.
This was one of the best dining experience we had! The place was absolutely charming, and we enjoyed our lunch! Please make reservations so you can enjoy the private rooms! Service was definitely top notch too! We always enjoy dining at the Ukai chain of restaurants.

What an amazing traditional Japanese fine dining experience. We had the Beef tasting menu and it did not disappoint. The service and staff were out of the world and the surroundings are world class and a must do experience. Private dining rooms provide a wonderful environment to savour the delightful food. Can’t wait to return.

This traditional Japanese restaurant is amazing. If you plan on climbing Mt. Takao, make reservations here, before or after you leave. The service impeccable the food delicious, smart, and beautiful. We had a private dining room with a koi pond right outside the space. Our waitress waited on us hand hand foo, explaining each course and dis not miss a beat between courses. I had the chicken set with the little fried fish. The chicken is grilled for you. The dining space is tatami mats and lacquer furniture. Small pieces of art are there as well. Our dining area could hold 4 people. The bathroom is lovely, therer are sanitary napkins, mouthwash, q-tips to help yourself. Perfect dining experience 🤜🏽🤛🏽

This is by far the prettiest restaurant I’ve ever been. We made a reservation for 1 PM on a Saturday and luckily it was snowing, turning the scenery into something even more beautiful. Service was amazing, everyone was so polite and attentive. In terms of food, it was okay, nothing extraordinary - I think it is a bit overpriced - but I would definitely come back because the whole experience was a 10.

Hachiōji Station is a bustling transportation hub surrounded by department stores, typical of Tokyo's large stations. However, venturing away from the station reveals a rich natural environment with proximity to Mt. Takao, a popular day-hike destination. The city of Hachioji itself is home to around 580,000 people and offers attractions such as Gokuraku-ji Temple and the Hachioji Castle ruins.
Last station on Yokohama line, from here you have 2 lines Hachioji line and chuo line.

The train was late and the station is extremely busy to the point to where people are shoving you out of there way like you aren't even a human. One of my least favorite train stations near central Tokyo. The only positive is they have a good selection of refreshments if you want to stock up before your journey.

At Tokyo’s western edge, Hachiōji hums between city and mountain ⛰️✨. Shoppers wander arcades, hikers pack for Takao’s trails, and trains pull away toward quiet fields. The air here smells faintly of cedar and ambition — a gateway for those seeking calm just beyond the city’s pulse. Tourist Tip: Great base for Mt. Takao and Chūō Line, Hachiko Line transfers 🚉

It is accessible by chairlift and cable car from Mount Takao, but for a less crowded experience, hikers can take the Inariyama Trail to reach the top in about 90 minutes. Those seeking a longer trek can continue to Mt. Kobotoke-Shiroyama and onto Mount Jinba on an 18 km course.
Very fun place specially very early morning. I went on a weekend around 6:30 by car. Parking lot is allowed to enter. Loved this hike and not too intense for my fitness level, decent. Nicely signposted from Fujino station if your wifi suddenly sh!+$ the bed like mine did😅 beautiful scenery on the way up and it’s stunning at the top with beautiful views all around. There is a little restaurant at the top also selling beer/drinks/snacks. Make sure you have some cash, I forgot my wallet and only had Suica which they don’t take. Luckily on the way down at about 400m there was some little falls where I could drink some pure water. Took me about 3 hours to hit the top and about half that on the other side going down. I had some really delicious soba at the bus stop to Takao. Recommend this hike for sure.

Great easy medium level mountain to hike. From Fujino Station, walk up until the entrance of the trail. There are some steep area but the pace is generally gentle. On the top there area lot of station and sitting areas to hang around. If you want to do a hike similar to Takao Mountain, this may be a good choice.

Third mountain I climbed in japan. I loved the view of this most. There is a tree on the top where you can sleep if you have the required items. The hike is okay for the beginners. On the top there are 2/3 shops to eat. Or watch the view from inside of the shop. Overall. This mountain is really worthy of hiking.

Superb view, totally natural walkway. I went up from Takao Station on Dec 7, 2022 Weather was quite cold making my hands numb. No any facilities at all on the way from bus terminal to mountain. Just only 1 vending machine at bus terminal then 1 food shop and toilets on top. But it’s so challenging and I love it. Will come back again.

A great hike for a day is Jinba-san to Takao-san. One can easily get here using a bus from Takao station. I got on the bus at 8:10 am, and this proved to be a good choice given the long walk.. Nice tea-houses along the way. I hiked in February, and it was quite muddy and slippery. Luckily, I did not fall, but I saw many people slipping and falling. So ki o tsukete kudasai!

There are 24 hours toilets in this park and a community gym where you can use the facilities for as cheap as 300 yen. Once a month, on the 2nd Saturday, there is a flea market. In the spring, they have food stalls so you can eat and drink was enjoy the cherry blossoms. In the summer, they have fireworks in the baseball area. This is a nice park, but it doesn't really have wide open grassy. Currently, there is a lot of construction on the NE side of the park. They have also torn down the running track. Once the construction is done, it will be a lot nicer.
Amanda C — Google review
It's not as good as it used to be. The addition of more tennis courts, more concrete paths and the removal of Sakura trees a few years ago really took away from the charm of this park. They used to have huge festivals bringing 100s of people. Not anymore. Seems they are afraid to make the concrete dirty. Really dumb.

Nestled in the lush woodlands of Mt Takao, the Takao Monkey Park & Wildflower Garden is a charming attraction featuring a modest zoo with Japanese macaque monkeys and a seasonal flower trail. The park is home to around 70 playful Japanese macaques, beloved by tourists for their adorable antics. Visitors can stop by on their way to the summit and enjoy observing these mischievous creatures.
Cute small monkey park and wild plants trail. The staff were really nice and explained to us the lineage of the monkeys, you can also feed the monkeys. Meanwhile the trail is short, around 5-7mins walk, however its very peaceful. We went during winter so there were no flowers, so best to go here during spring.
Jensen E — Google review
Random “money park” on a mountain 😂 It’s actually quite fun, and you can feed the monkeys. However, it does feel like they don’t have enough space for so many of them.
Thomas G — Google review
500¥💴 to enter. It was 100¥ small cup or 300¥ big cup to feed monkey. Back after 2 years and the place is still super cute and a fun stop while hiking Mt. Takao! A fun stop while hiking up the mountain! You can feed the monkeys while on the top deck! They are super fun to watch! The gardens were not in full bloom in the fall. The path is short enough to wonder through without losing too much time.
Yuuki A — Google review
I visited the monkey park on Mount Takao and paid 1,000 yen for two people. Unfortunately, it was very disappointing. The “park” is really just a small enclosure, maybe around 200-400 square meter or a bit larger, with about 50 monkeys inside. There is like one tree no bushes or grass — just a bare, cramped space. The monkeys looked sad and the whole environment felt uncomfortable and unpleasant to witness. Overall, it was a very disheartening experience, and I can only give it one star out of five.
D A — Google review
Very friendly service! Entertaining monkeys living in peace. Visitors can feed them by using gacha machines (without functionality of gatcha randomness) located within the visitor space. The staff is friendly and will kindly share stories about the monkeys and point out notable monkeys in the enclosure. The only issue I see is that the area for the monkeys might be a little bit too small compared the the amount of them running around.
RiDyCY — Google review
An interesting Monkey park along the route to the summit of Mt Takao. This park showcase the whole generation of monkeys. They look happy and active playing with each other. There’s a flower garden as well. It is worth it to walk around when the flowers have bloomed. Overall the park is small and you’d probably spend at most 30mins to 1 hour exploring this place. There is an entrance charge of 500 yen per person so I think it is inexpensive.
Marcus H — Google review
Not really worth visiting this park, even admission tickets are very expensive for such a small area, it should not be named as Park. It is very Stinky here. They should make this free of cost for visitors. Even kids could not enjoy this place for more than 15 minutes.
Vishal D — Google review
There are way too many monkeys in such a small enclosure. All concrete and dirt without any tree (except one which is behind a fence and barbed wire) and shrubs for them. Frankly it was inhumane and seems cruel

The ticket price was much higher in person than it was on the website, and I'm not sure why. The gallery was also much smaller than I expected for such a high ticket price. I relaxed on the luxurious sofas and sat in one of the exhibit chairs. Most of the exhibits are the same ones that always are there? I don't remember them all, so I'm not sure, but I've been there a few times so there were a few that I'd seen before. Maybe the content hasn't changed? I took some snaps of some of the paintings and furniture that I liked, other than the ones that weren't allowed to be photographed. The free shuttle bus made it easy to get there and back, which was great. A quiet art museum that makes you want to visit every now and then. Konica Minolta Science Dome is a place that ignites the desire for space exploration. The planetarium offers various programs that provide an immersive experience, while events like science shows and craft lessons engage children in scientific discovery. The museum features three hands-on spaces aimed at nurturing children's interest in science through play. The planetarium, a highlight of the museum, offers a realistic sensation of traveling through the universe with its unique seating arrangement.
Nice place for kids at a very low cost. If kids understand japanese, it is good also due to their movies and constelations explanation at the planetarium. Good to keep children under 8 busy for a couple of hours.

The Hachioji Children's Science Museum consists of three hands-on spaces that nurture children's "spirit of science" through play. <Look The planetarium, the symbol of the science museum, features a planetarium that can take you anywhere in the universe. The seats are arranged in one direction in a staircase-like formation, giving visitors a realistic sense of being transported out into the universe. Please enjoy the beautiful starry sky and powerful images. The exhibits were completely renewed in July 2009, and the "Play Science" exhibit on the first floor is now available for preschool children to enjoy! On the second floor, "Challenge the Mission of the International Space Station," a simulator of the asteroid probe Hayabusa, "Dasic Earth," a 4D digital globe that reflects the earth, moon, and planets on a sphere, and the 4D digital space viewer Mitaka, a simulator that allows visitors to go anywhere in the universe, The exhibition includes a 2.3-million-year-old Hachioji elephant fossil (replica) excavated in 2001, and a panel display of the Hachioji meteorite that fell 200 years ago during the Edo period (Edo period). <Touch Visitors can see, touch, and move equipment and a space simulator to get a closer look at science. The first thing we want to do is to get visitors to ask "Why? The aim of these "touchable exhibits" is to get visitors to first ask "Why? <Creation For the little scientists, the museum has a science workshop where they can experience the joy of making things. In addition to craft classes, the museum also holds experimental shows and lectures on interesting living creatures.

I went here specifically for the planetarium. The showing for adults are only on Sunday and last about 40 minutes. Adult tickets are 500 yen and tickets for children are 150 yen. The other showings, throughout the week, are for children, since they're themed around popular characters like Pokemon. All showings are only in Japanese. At this time, due to Corona, the other facilities are closed.

Bought the annual pass for ¥600( in 2024, daily admission is ¥200. ) it’s got free ample parking, a free train exhibit outside and it’s close to two nice parks. That’s said, there isn’t really that much to do inside. A building block area, then the “science” ball area. I’d honestly say aimed at 5years and above. My daughter is 1.5. I bought the pass to have an inside option during summer. They have monthly craft times for 4 and older. Upstairs is an astronaut area but it’s kinda boring. There’s zero English. You can rest and eat snacks upstairs which is nice. They bathrooms are kid friendly.

The admission fee is cheap, and there are many interactive exhibits, so children are always engrossed in playing there. There are also things that adults can enjoy, such as mechanisms like the Pythagora Switch and a virtual experience where you can become an astronaut. The planetarium has various programs depending on the season, such as Shimajiro, Anpanman, and Doraemon. In front of the building, there is an old Marunouchi Line train on display, which is great for children who like trains. It's a little far from the station, but you can access it by bus, and the parking lot is large, so you can also come by car. 1,100 for adults on normal days. 1,30p on weekends and holidays. I went on a holiday so it was very full but the rotenburo was really nice. The carbonated spa and sauna was also good. Nice and relaxing to go to after hiking.

This onsen is located right next to the Takaosanguchi station. After a tiring day hiking up and down Mount Takao, this is the perfect way to refresh and recharge yourself. The outdoor hot water baths are just the right temperature. And if you forget to pack extra clothes, there are convenience stores a 10-ish walk away. Highly recommended (unless you have tattoos)

This onsen have all of the facilities as advertised, and the water quality is just too good! Multiple baths are available, and they even have a bicarbonated pool that is quite rare They have a massage spa that offers great value services but I haven't tried it as there is a long queue. Same with their food offerings What I liked is their tatami rest area. Having a place to nap after a mountain trail and onsen soak is just perfect. Location is perfect too, just beside the station The only negative thing here is the sheer smount of people as it is just that good. Do come early or call for a reservation if you can

Mountain cable car
Takaosan Cable Car Kiyotaki Station is a convenient way to reach the top of Mount Takao, offering stunning city views. The station provides access to several trails, with cable cars departing every 10 minutes. While some paths can be steep and rocky, they are incredibly scenic. A terrace between two peaks offers reasonably priced food and serves as a great starting point for climbing the sacred mountain. The station also features sculptures of Japanese giant flying squirrels, native to the area.
This whole cable car and hiking experience is magnificent! Definitely pick a clear day so you can be stunned by the view of Mt Fuji! (Also, note that the chair lift was closed in early February 2025 for a few months of inspection but the cable cars are running). I enjoyed the suspension bridge on the way down too (you have to take an alternate trail to experience that).
Nick R — Google review
For the autumn 🍁 foliage you have to take cable car as they have lined the route with the maple trees. It does get crowded especially on the way down during the evening. The steep incline of about 31 degree is an experience in itself. Visited on 7 Dec 2024.

Great views going up Takao-san, and it is said to be the steepest cable car in Japan No issues aside from the crowds. Best to be there as early as you can as the lines can be long. We arrived at one of the first trains and we still waited about 30mins. Same wait on our way back at around 1pm You can pay via credit card from the queue but best to get the tocket ahead of time
Ajilex F — Google review
This is a wonderful half-day-out from Tokyo, by train only. Great walks on the mountain, lovely views, nature at its best and good trail-marking. Also - food stalls and toilets, as expected in Japan.
Shai B — Google review
This Station is the starting point for the famous ride up Mount Takao, and it makes the climb much easier, especially for families, elderly visitors, or anyone who doesn’t want a long hike. The cable car runs every 15–20 minutes, and a round-trip ticket costs around 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for children, which is reasonable. The station itself is small but well-organized, with clear signs and staff who are friendly and helpful. There are vending machines, toilets, and slopes for accessibility, though wheelchairs may need some assistance due to the steep boarding area. Parking is available nearby but fills up quickly on weekends and holidays, so arriving early or using the train is recommended. On the positive side, the ride is short but scenic, giving you a unique experience of Japan’s steepest cable car slope. On the downside, it gets very crowded during autumn leaves and cherry blossom seasons, and waiting times can be long. Overall, it’s a fun and convenient way to start your Mount Takao visit, especially if you want to save energy for exploring the trails and temple at the top.
Wajira S — Google review
11/21/2025 Took the chair lift on a weekday. It was crowded but it was lovely waiting and enjoying the beauty of momiji Took the cable car on our way back . It was beautiful . I recommend to buy the round trip ticket to save time from lining up again to purchase one.
Nes — Google review
That day we were blessed with cozy weather. In the 45-minute-long queue, we indulged in a quick lunch of piping hot, baked and creamy chestnuts to stave off hunger. As the cable car ascended, the panoramic view outside the windows transformed into a mesmerizing spectacle of Japanese maple hues. Brilliant shades of orange-yellow, virtually crimson and lively lime green dramatically alter the landscape, creating a breathtaking scene that evolves with each increase in altitude.

Takaosanguchi Station is a charming gateway to Mount Takao, offering not only convenient access but also a taste of Japanese culture and natural relaxation. The station's award-winning design by Kengo Kuma features a large wooden roof symbolizing the connection between the physical world and the divine. Visitors can easily access local sweet shops and enjoy the beautiful wooden architecture of the station building.
If you're looking for a quick getaway from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, Mount Takao (Takaosan) is the perfect destination. Located just about an hour by train from central Tokyo, this scenic mountain offers a refreshing retreat into nature without needing to travel far. What I Loved: Beautiful Hiking Trails: There are several well-maintained trails with varying difficulty levels. Trail 1 is the most popular and suitable for beginners, while others offer a more rugged and quiet experience for seasoned hikers. Stunning Views: On clear days, you can see all the way to Mount Fuji from the summit – a breathtaking reward after the hike. Rich Culture: Along the way, you’ll find the ancient Yakuo-in Temple, where you can learn about traditional mountain worship and spot statues of tengu (mythical mountain creatures). Nature & Wildlife: Especially during spring (cherry blossoms) and autumn (vibrant foliage), the mountain becomes a canvas of color. You may even encounter wild monkeys or beautiful birds. Accessibility: You can choose to hike or take the cable car or chairlift part of the way up, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Cute little station. The architecture is exceptional.
AZM D — Google review
Journey's end where pilgrimage begins—architect Kengo Kuma rebuilt this terminus in 2015 using local cedar, honoring mountain that rises immediately above. Cable cars and chair lifts wait to carry leg-weary souls partway up; purists begin climbing directly. Onsen waters steam beside the station, offering post-hike comfort. On weekends, thousands arrive seeking sacred mountaintop temples, autumn foliage, or simply escape from concrete density. The station knows its purpose: gateway to transcendence, threshold between rail time and mountain time. Tourist Tip: Terminal station—all trains end here. Mt. Takao trailhead begins immediately. Cable car and chair lift nearby. Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu onsen adjacent for post-hike relaxation. Avoid weekends if possible—crowds intense. Buy provisions before ascending.

While known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, it's also a great place to enjoy the fresh greenery and autumn foliage. Take a bus from Hachioji Station to the "Takiyama Castle Ruins Shita" bus stop, then walk for about 10 minutes to reach the Nakamaru. Nakamaru features a plaza, offering a breathtaking view of the Tama River and the cityscape toward Haijima. Since buses run infrequently, many people arrive by foot. The castle ruins are devoid of playground equipment, and the appearance of a mountain castle from the Warring States period remains intact, with moats and earthworks visible. It's fascinating to stroll around and imagine how people defended and attacked the castle back then, making it a must-see for history buffs. The deep moat protecting the main castle is particularly impressive. The park is well-maintained, with plenty of boardwalks and benches. Some areas are paved for easy walking, but there are also steep slopes and stairs, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes. There is also a service where you can scan a QR code to watch footage from the Sengoku period and view animated images in AR. Even if you're not an expert on history, you can have fun learning. Nishi-Hachiōji Station is a bustling hub, especially during weekday mornings when students from surrounding schools disembark for their classes. The outbound train to Takao around 8 o'clock sees a surge of activity, with the platform teeming with passengers. It's essential to be punctual as missing the train is a real possibility due to the crowds. On the other hand, inbound trains heading towards Tokyo are also heavily crowded during weekday mornings.
Quite possibly the most epic, based, and redpilled station in all of Japan.

Takao Mountain Trail Biwa Falls Course is a recommended route for beginners, offering an enjoyable mountain climbing experience with fresh air. Climbing shoes are ideal, but sneakers are also suitable for the hike. The trail spans around 3.5km with a moderate incline and includes challenging wooden stairs near the summit. It's advised to avoid weekends or public holidays due to narrow paths and large groups.
Great hike close to Tokyo! It took me 1.5 hours to travel from Bunkyo-ku. We took trail #6 on the way up and came down via trail #7. Both are similar in terms of difficulty. I used my walking sticks, which helped a lot, but you can manage without them too. Ankle support is highly recommended if your boots don’t already provide it. Do not have restrooms through out the trail - only at the beginning and at the end.
Elif B — Google review
Around a 50min hike, 3.5km, moderate incline until you hit the staircase which takes you up the last 1/5th of the mountain. The staircase kills (putting it mildly). The path is pretty narrow so I’d avoid going on a weekend of public holiday as it’s hard to bypass groups etc.

Trail #6 is less crowded and more nature. If you are regularly hiking, it is really easy and not very steep. Sneakers are enough. FYI: You can only go up, so I recommend to do #6 up and #1 down.

Train station
Yamada Station, situated in Hachioji City, serves as a vital transportation hub for many locals. As part of the JR Chuo Line, it offers convenient access to central Tokyo and surrounding areas. The station's vicinity is well-equipped with convenience stores, dining options, and shopping streets, ensuring easy access to daily essentials and meals. Additionally, the station has seen improvements in cleanliness and usability over time. Nearby amenities include a farm and a convenience store for added convenience.
Rice fields once rippled where apartment blocks now stand—""Yamada"" means mountain rice field, preserving agricultural memory in modern suburban context. The station serves local residential needs while funneling weekend mountain pilgrims toward Takao's sacred peak. Traditional farming families gave way to commuter families, but the name remembers. Green spaces persist between developments, honoring field heritage. Tourist Tip: Local trains primarily. Residential area between Kitano and Takao. No major sites. Good for accessing residential neighborhoods. Transition zone from pure suburb to mountain approach.

(Translated by Google) A station on the Keio Electric Railway Takao Line. In the past, it was a lonely station where only local trains (which did not connect to the Keio Hachioji limited express) stopped there. However, as a result of the timetable revisions implemented in recent years, connections with limited express trains have been greatly improved, and access to the Shinjuku area has improved considerably. Even compared to Mejirodai Station and Takao Station, it is on par with the number of departures and arrivals and access to Shinjuku. I had the opportunity to shop at a convenience store in front of Yamada Station, so I visited Yamada Station for the first time in a while. I was surprised by how bright and clear the atmosphere was. Tama Zoological Park, nestled in the picturesque Tama Hills, is a sprawling zoo that offers free shuttles and showcases a diverse range of local and international animals in their natural habitats. Spanning 52 hectares, this park boasts three major ecological areas - the Asiatic Garden, the African Garden, and the Australian Garden - along with a vast Insectarium.
We visited Tama Zoological Park in Tokyo, and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable days of my trip! The zoo is huge, green, and peaceful — it doesn’t feel crowded or commercial like some other places. The layout is divided into Asian, African, and Australian zones, and each area is designed to feel natural for the animals. The Lion Bus Safari was definitely the highlight — getting to see lions up close through the bus windows was thrilling! I also loved the koalas, elephants, and snow leopards. The butterfly house inside the insectarium was magical — a must-see for both kids and adults. The entire park is clean, well-organized, and easy to explore. There are vending machines, benches, and shaded areas all around, so it’s comfortable to spend the whole day. The staff were kind and helpful, and English signs made everything easy to understand. If you want a relaxing escape from Tokyo’s busy streets, Tama Zoo is perfect. It’s educational, fun, and surrounded by nature. Highly recommended for families, couples, or anyone who loves animals!

Excellent zoo. Cheap entry. This zoo is huge. Be prepared for walking a ridiculous amount. If you want to see the whole zoo, bring food and drinks and realize it will take 4+ hours. You can get on the free bus and just ride it around but you can't really see the animals well that way. Removed a star due to the ridiculous lion bus where they designed it so you can't see the lions without paying extra to take a bus through the isolated enclosure.
David — Google review
It's a wonderful zoo but it is quite large and could take some time to see everything. You may want to map things out a bit. If you go through the week, you cannot book the Lion Bus tickets in advance, you need to go there right away to get them and they are timed. You must also get there 10 minutes before the time on the tickets. The staff are very nice and helpful but I didn't encounter anyone who spoke English. Through the week is also typically when a lot of schools visit so it may be a bit crowded with children.

Of course! Here’s a shorter, Google-review-friendly version 👇 ⸻ This zoo is huge and beautifully spacious, with some steep slopes. Many say strollers aren’t recommended, but I think bringing one is helpful if your child can’t walk long distances (you can rent one at the entrance). There are free shuttle buses, but distances are still quite far. Not many restaurants inside, so bringing your own food is a good idea — there are lots of nice picnic areas. A great place to spend the whole day! Parking fills up fast but smaller lots are available nearby. There’s even an indoor amusement park across the street for more fun after the zoo.
Cerise — Google review
Had a wonderful time taking the little one to this zoo. We got in just as the Park opened and it was not crowded. We were one of the first people at the lion exhibit and we almost had a whole lion bus to ourselves where we got to see the lions up close. They put meat on hooks on the outside of the bus so they come up right against the glass to get it. Easily worth the 500 yen or so to get on the lion bus. We got to see a lot of the animals we wanted to see and luckily there was a free shuttle that travels within the park. Each stop brings you a cluster of exhibits. Our little one was too tired to walk so we took advantage of the shuttle. It was a little drizzly when we visited, but I think going in Nov was a great time since it wasn't too hot or cold. Since we didn't see eveything, we would definitely go visit again.

You can visit this zoo mostly guilt-free. I usually avoid zoos in Japan because of the poor conditions for animals, but a friend convinced me to try the Tama zoo. I was surprised and relieved! Most animals have a large enclosure with space to roam and I only saw two with signs of stress (pacing, plucking). There are no animal shows, thank goodness. Most animals can hide and take a break from viewing if they want. A few enclosures are too small, but it seems like they are renovating. A huge new enclosure for the endangered Japanese Toki is set to be completed in 2026. In particular I was impressed by the huge walkthrough aviary, butterfly insectarium, and vast climbing structures for the orangutans. Because of the large enclosures, it is a big zoo. It can take a whole day to visit, and some animal viewings stop at 4PM, so I recommend coming early. For those that tire easily or with small kids, there is a free shuttle bus that goes up the biggest "hill". There are many picnic spots, but there are many vending machines and some snack counters too. I appreciate their efforts to switch to compostable utensils. In May 2025 it costs only 600円 to visit the zoo. If you plan to do the Lion Bus (500円) on a busy day, I recommend purchasing the tickets online (QR code) in advance, otherwise you have to wait in line and can't choose the boarding time (no online purchases the day of) or risk the tickets running out. If you can't purchase online, then I recommend coming at opening and immediately buying the Lion Bus tickets.

I’ve been living in Japan for 3 years and have already visited Tama Zoo at least three times. I’m probably one of the rare adults who comes here without kids. (゜_゜) But honestly, every time I visit, there’s only one stop for me: the koala house.🐨 Before I met Kirara✨️, I had no idea a koala could look so… human. Those unbelievable double eyelids are unlike anything I’ve ever seen! Until then, I didn’t even know koalas could have double eyelids. Sometimes I wonder if I’m here to watch animals… or if I’m basically attending my idol’s fan meeting.🥹 If you visit Tokyo and don’t know where to go, just come to Tama Zoo and meet Kirara, the koala with the most stunning eyes.✨️ You might end up spending half the day staring like a true fan.🫶 日本語: きららはコアラ界の北川景子だと思います。超かわいい、推しです。(:.´艸`:.)

The overall experience was good. The zoo is about 1.5 hour away from central Tokyo, but the travel was easy. We went on a Tuesday in November, so there were almost no people aside from some Japanese couples and a few elementary school classes. Some of the enclosures were old or being renovated, but fare more of them here new and very well kept. Most animals had a lot of room and were entertained, but some of them (like the snow leopard) had little to no entertainment or coverage (no trees or bushes). A lot if nice picnic areas to enjoy lunch, coffee or a treat. Saw no tourist at our visit. The staff at the shops spoke little to no English, but were very friendly. Definitely recommend it for tourists :)

My destination was Musashino Misasagi, the tomb of Emperor Showa. Its dignified appearance, free of unnecessary ornamentation, was striking, exuding a sense of dignity within its solemnity. Its atmosphere is truly fitting for the grave of an emperor who lived through the turbulent Showa era. This tomb is home to the four imperial family graves, including those of Emperor Taisho, Empress Teimei, and Empress Kojun. Emperor Showa was said to have enjoyed golf and often visited golf courses in Hachioji. Learning about his deep connection to this land made me feel even closer to it. (Translated by Google) Musashino Mausoleum is the tomb of Emperor Showa. Emperor Showa passed away on January 7, 1989 (Showa 64). A funeral ceremony (state funeral) was held on February 24 of the same year, and he was buried in the tomb that was under construction. On the 27th of the same month, it was named "Musashino Mausoleum." Prior to the naming of the tomb, the tombstone attached to Emperor Showa's coffin was inscribed with the following inscription by Prince Ayamiya Fumihito (later Prince Akishino Fumihito): "Emperor Showa, Musashino Mausoleum, passed away at 6:33 a.m. on January 7, 1989, and buried on February 24, 1989." With the construction of the tomb of Emperor Showa, the name of the cemetery was also changed to "Musashino Imperial Graveyard." Construction of the tomb began on April 17, 1989 (Heisei 1) and was completed on January 6, 1990 (Heisei 2). The tomb grounds cover an area of 2,500 square meters, and about 55 species of plants, including cherry blossoms and Akebonosugi cedars, which Emperor Showa loved during his lifetime, are planted here.[1] The tomb is a circular tumulus with three upper and three lower tiers, 8.75 meters high, and is located northeast of the tomb of Emperor Taisho. The structure of the tomb is almost the same as that of Emperor Taisho, except that there is no tier at the public worship area. However, it faces almost south, the upper circular tumulus is more gently curved than that of Emperor Taisho, and the height from the public worship area to the tier where the tumulus is located is lower, in an attempt to reduce its intimidating appearance. The name of the tomb comes from the fact that Emperor Showa loved nature and wrote about "Musashino" in his poems, and that "Musashino" can also be found in the Manyoshu, so it was named "Musashino Mausoleum." The inscription placed in the stone coffin was handwritten by Prince Fumihito. Every year on January 7th, the Showa Emperor Festival is held at the tomb and the three Imperial Palace shrines. On that day, curtains are hung around the tomb and a temporary structure is set up in the Imperial Worship Hall for the ceremony. From Wikipedia I came here to receive the Imperial Seal. It was beautifully maintained, and the security officers and office staff were very friendly. (Translated by Google) I visited Koyasu Shrine in Hachioji to pray for the safety of my wife's surgery. It was my first time visiting, but the "Fox Festival" was being held in the shrine grounds, and I was able to encounter an unexpectedly lively moment. The sight of the white-robed shrine maidens with red fox makeup on their cheeks dancing gracefully was fantastical, and there was a mysterious cuteness to it, as if they had wandered into a fairy tale world. The local people gathered in the shrine grounds, and the atmosphere filled with smiles and warmth conveyed how much this shrine is rooted in the community and loved every day. Koyasu Shrine is known as the guardian deity of safe childbirth, child-rearing, and household safety, and is an ancient shrine said to have been founded in the Nara period. The deity enshrined here is Konohanasakuyahime-no-mikoto, and I felt a sense of tranquility and purity as if I was enveloped in the gentle divine virtue. While it is by no means a large shrine, the carefully maintained grounds have a dignified atmosphere and an embracing capacity that seems to gently accept the wishes and prayers of those who visit. I was grateful to have found such a place of prayer, where I could put my hands together in warm, peaceful prayer, and vowed to return.

(Translated by Google) Hachioji City, Tokyo. Founded in 759, the shrine's main deity is Konohana no Sakuyahime. It's said that Tachibana Ukyo no Shoyu built it to pray for the safe delivery of the Empress of Emperor Junnin, the current emperor. Also, before Minamoto no Yoshiie set out on his expedition to Oshu, he planted a zelkova tree in the shape of a boat as a prayer for victory, which is the origin of the place name "Funamori," which still stands in Hachioji today. During the Edo period, the shrine received red seals from Tokugawa Shoguns such as Tokugawa Iemitsu, and the shrine's crest is the three-leaf hollyhock of the Tokugawa family. Because this shrine was built in prayer for the Empress's safe delivery, many people still visit to pray for safe delivery. The Ashifune Shrine, a shrine within the grounds, protects the souls of fetuses that were unable to enter this world due to premature birth or other reasons, clearly demonstrating the shrine's role as a place dedicated to safe childbirth. The main building was destroyed in the 1897 Hachioji fire. It was burned down again during the Hachioji air raid in 1945, but was rebuilt after the war and remains standing to this day.

Turn west at the first corner and you'll find the shrine on the north side. By car, head toward the station at the Hachioji Station Entrance Intersection on Route 20 Koshu Kaido, then turn left at the first traffic light, heading east onto Minami-koji. The Minami-Tama Junior High School intersection is a one-way exit from the station, so you cannot enter from the north. There is a parking lot that is absorbed into the Aoi Memorial Hall, but the grounds are complicated, so please visit the shrine when you have made a reservation to have your car purified. The shrine building faces south with its back to the north, and the approach to the shrine faces Minami-koji. There is a gift shop to the right of the main hall, but the gifts, including character items, are overflowing and cannot fit on the counter. They are lined up in a large gift case in the grounds in front of the gift shop. Please pick up your gifts from there and pay at the gift shop counter. This is perhaps the largest shrine in Hachioji. Upon entering the shrine grounds, a large sacred pond stretches out to the right. Passing through the votive plaque hall on the east side of the main building, five sub-shrines (the Sixth, Ontake, Inari, Hakusan, and Ishi) stand to the right. On the left, there's the Ashifune-sha, dedicated to the extremely rare Hiruko-no-mikoto (a minor deity you won't understand unless you've read the mythology). Further north, in the back, is the main shrine of Konpira-sama. To the west of the main building, there's a small shrine (Tachibana-sha) dedicated to Tachibana Ukyo-shosuke-no-mikoto, the shrine's founder. To the east of the main building, there's another small shrine (Shinzu-den) dedicated to Konohanasakuya-hime, even though the main deity is Konohanasakuya-hime. There is a small shrine of Itsukushima Shrine on the large sacred pond. The buildings are densely arranged within the grounds, and there is an explanatory board at each shrine explaining which deity is enshrined at which shrine, so please read it while you visit. The grounds may look like you can exit onto the Koshu Kaido side, but you can't, so there is no back approach. This shrine boasts a more imposing assembly hall than the main hall. A very serene forest park with small numbers of visitors on weekdays. Wear your most comfortable shoes for the terrain, and wear your light colored clothes to avoid insects especially bees and hornets on summer. The maps are located on each entries and there are many toilets, too.

A little difficult to reach due to very narrow roads and some pretty sharp turns. However, it was worth the trip. The woods here feel old and peaceful. The trails around the park feel more like deer paths so it gives a very natural feel. Very beautiful woods.

(Translated by Google) Hachioji's biggest event. In 2023, it will be from August 4th to 6th. Starting on the 4th, night stalls were already appearing on Koshu Kaido in the lower district. On the morning of the 6th, night stalls were opening up in the upper district, and the whole town was crowded with people. The hustle and bustle of Koshu Kaido, which spans about 2km from Hachioji Ekimae Dori to the Oiwake intersection in the west, becomes full of festival colors. On Saturdays, you can hear flute drums from the morning. During the festival period, you will wake up to the sound of festival music, and during the day you will see Japanese drums, bon nagashi, festival floats, mikoshi, and stalls in the blazing summer sun. After dusk, you will be immersed in the festival atmosphere as the floats and mikoshi are paraded along the road. . There is also a 7,000-shot fireworks display a week before this, and all the events that make up the summer festival are condensed into these few days, allowing you to enjoy all the fun of summer. Although it won't be as crowded as the world-famous Kyoto Gion Festival, it is a festival that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and genders. That said, there will be quite a crowd. Even if you don't look too fashionable and go out, you might end up getting tired and confused by the crowd. A style that is easy to move in and cool might be good. This festival is purely a money making machine for the government and local businesses. Shops that are closed for years suddenly open for it, charging ¥1,000 for a mask that cost ¥100 selling the same food over again for 10 times what it would cost to make it. Alcohol for ¥500 when you can walk in a store and get it for ¥230??? I don’t understand it. People think “oh have to go” why do you have to go? Dragging young kids around in 36 degree weather risking their life because you “have to go” so many police around, can’t even see the geisha as stupidly small place to put it and too many people wanting to see it. Change the date, it’s too dam hot. Don’t worry about putting a strain on the hospitals and police.

I recently visited Yuyake Koyake Fureai Village, and I must say it was a wonderful experience. This village offers a serene and peaceful atmosphere, making it feel like you're miles away from the bustling city of Tokyo. One of the best things about this place is its size. Yuyake Koyake Fureai Village is quite spacious, allowing visitors to stroll around without feeling crowded. It's a perfect escape from the city's chaos and serves as a tranquil oasis. The sounds of nature here are mesmerizing. From the melodious chirping of birds to the soothing sound of the nearby river, it's a delight for anyone seeking a peaceful environment. We arrived just before 9 a.m. on a clear Sunday. The car park was empty, with wide and welcoming spaces. The gentleman at reception was very pleasant and shared his local wisdom. We were the first to descend the steps to the river, where a tranquil morning mist hovered over the steady stream. The kids were astounded—they splashed, explored, and created for hours. For lunch, we had booked a BBQ set, which did not disappoint: it was well sheltered from the sun, and the meat provided was of good quality. After lunch, we did some insect hunting before heading back to the car. A day well spent—stories to be shared, smiles on faces.

However, on the way up, you can see the beautiful azaleas blooming, see the Sky Tree, and get a panoramic view of Tokyo. Approximately 1 hour round trip. The mountain trail is well-maintained, but since it is a mountain trail, it is best to wear sneakers or more comfortable shoes. There are no steep climbs, and the trail is relatively easy to walk. It is located on the top of Mt. Imakuma at an altitude of 505 meters. A magnificent temple made of concrete. Okusha shrines often have small shrines, but this one is well built. This is because Imakuma Shrine was located on the summit of this mountain until 1945, but the main shrine was destroyed by fire. The fact that it was rebuilt at the foot of the mountain in 1976 may have something to do with it. The bear exhibit is located in the Forest Science Museum, surrounded by an arboretum and a cherry blossom preserve. Visiting the Forest Science Museum alone is free, but there is an admission fee to stroll through the forest: 200 yen for adults. Since I had the chance, I decided to take a stroll. Beyond the arboretum is the cherry blossom preserve, where so-called local cherry trees from all over Japan are planted. It was not yet the season for the arboretum or cherry trees, so I wasn't able to see any flowers, but it seems that cherry blossom season is the busiest time of the year, when you can enjoy a variety of cherry blossoms. As I strolled, I imagined the picturesque scenery would unfold during cherry blossom season. A leisurely stroll would probably take two to three hours. There are also rest spots along the way. I would definitely like to visit again during cherry blossom season. Asiatic black bears are human-sized and omnivorous, but also herbivorous. Pandas are even more herbivorous, I learned. Trail No. 1 is the easiest and leads to key sightseeing spots and temples.

At the trailhead you have two main options for reaching the peak. You can either take the cable car or climb to the top on foot. There are a number of trails available, and Trail No. 1 is the easiest of them all, is mostly paved, and takes you to the majority of the sightseeing spots and temples. If you are visiting Japan or Tokyo, Mt. Takao offers an easily accessible escape to nature, and depending on which trail you take, there is no need for any special hiking or climbing gear, especially if you use the cable cars that take you most of the way up the mountain. On the way down, we came across this suspension bridge. There are a number of inns and Japanese style restaurants lining the streets from the trailhead to the train station. Takaosan-guchi Station ensures that anyone can visit this mountain whether you have a car or not. Mt. Takao has much to offer in terms of landscape or woodland photography depending on the season, and has much to see and learn if you just want to enjoy some sightseeing.

(Translated by Google) Hachiman Shrine's origins date back to 924, when Takayasu, the father of Yoshitaka Ono, the founder of the Yokoyama Party, received a request from Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine and enshrined the god Hachiman here. Yakumo Shrine was founded in 916 by Myoko Otomo, who enshrined Gozu Tenno on Mt. Fukasawa, and later when Ujiteru Hojo built a castle on this mountain, he revered this shrine as his guardian deity, and when the castle fell, the remnants of Hojo carried out the object of worship. Later, this object of worship was washed ashore in Itaya-en due to a flood, and Gohei, a farmer, with the help of Sakuzaemon Nagata, relocated it to Yahata Shrine, and the two shrines were combined here. Incidentally, the eight followers of Tenno Gozu are called Hachioji, and this is the origin of the name of this place. It is a shrine that truly encompasses the history of Hachioji.

At that time, Ono Takayasu, who was the governor of Musashi, invited Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine to be founded. The Yokoyama clan, who ruled Yokoyama in Tama County, where this shrine was located, played an active role as vassals of the Kamakura Shogunate, but fell into ruin after the Wada War. Meanwhile, in 916, Kegon Bosatsu Myogo invited Hachioji Gongen and built Yakumo Shrine on Fukazawayama (now Shiroyama, Hachioji City). When Hachioji Castle fell in the Odawara Campaign by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1590, the two shrines were merged and became Hachiman Yakumo Shrine in 1653. Within the grounds, there is a magnificent Fujizuka and Yokoyama Shrine, which enshrines Yokoyama Yoshitaka, the founder of the Yokoyama clan who once ruled the area. The current name was adopted in 1883, and before that, two shrines existed side by side. The current shrine building was rebuilt in 1961 after being completely destroyed in the Hachioji air raid in 1945. (Translated by Google) Hachiman Yakumo Shrine is the main guardian deity of Hachioji City. It was founded in the mid-Heian period. In 924 (the second year of the Tenkei era), the area around Hachioji began when Ono Takayasu, a samurai dispatched by the Imperial Court and awarded the title of Musashinokami (Lord of the Fifth Rank), requested the construction of Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine in Kyoto in Yokoyama, Tama County, Musashi Province (present-day Tokyo, parts of Saitama Prefecture, and Kanagawa Prefecture). In 939 (the second year of the Tenkei era), Yokoyama Ranch, located in the Yokoyama area of Hachioji City, became an imperial ranch (a state-run ranch). Ono Takayasu's son, Ono Yoshitaka, who had risen from Musashinokami to Musashi Gonnokami, established his residence in Yokoyama, changed his surname from Ono to Yokoyama, and became Yokoyama Yoshitaka, the founder of the Yokoyama clan of the Musashi Seven Clans. [Musashi Seven Clans...refers to influential vassals in Musashi Province.] The Yokoyama clan includes the Inomata clan, the Kodama clan, the Murayama clan, the Noyo clan, the Tan clan, the Nishi clan, the Tsuzuri clan, and the Watashii clan. There are nine clans, but some clans died out along the way. The Yokoyama clan later became influential vassals of the Kamakura shogunate, and in 1214 (Kenpo 2), they founded Yokoyama Shrine within Hachiman Shrine to appease the spirit of founder Yokoyama Yoshitaka. Meanwhile, Yakumo Shrine is said to have been founded in 916 (Engi 16), when Kegon Bodhisattva Myogyo invited Gozu Hachioji Gongen to Fukasawayama (Hachioji Castle Mountain). These Gozu Hachioji Gongen were eight princes affiliated with Gozu Tenno, and are the deities from whom the name Hachioji in Hachioji City, Tokyo, is derived. Hojo Ujiteru, a member of the Odawara Hojo clan, built a castle on Fukazawayama and later renamed it Hachioji Castle. It is said that this area also became Hachioji. The Buddhist temple known as Soto Zen Temple Kinryusan Shimmatsuin, founded by Shimatsu-ni (the fourth daughter of Takeda Shingen), is a serene place that combines natural beauty with a peaceful atmosphere. The temple features a splendid garden and enshrines the blissful Budai-son. It also holds historical significance as it bears the family crest of the Takeda family.

(Translated by Google) Located in Hachioji City under Tokyo This is Shinshoin. The name of the mountain is ``Kinryuzan.'' It is an old temple of the Soto sect. Shinsho-in Temple was founded by Takeda Shingen's fourth daughter, Matsuhime (Shinsho-ni). Therefore, you can see Takeda Hishi everywhere. I previously visited and reviewed Shingen-in Temple near here, but this is a place that leads to the continuation of that story. As you know, the Takeda clan was attacked and destroyed by the Oda-Tokugawa alliance, but at that time Takeda Shingen's fourth daughter, Matsuhime, relied on Hojo and fled to Hojo territory with several other princesses. Matsuhime then became a monk at Shingen-in Temple mentioned above and entered the Buddhist monastery. It seems that Matsuhime spent some time at Shingen-in, and then became the founder and opened Shinsho-in. Shinshoin was founded in 1590, when Matsuhime moved from Shingenin to this hermitage. Incidentally, Matsuhime was engaged to Oda Nobutada, the eldest son of Oda Nobunaga, but in 1573, Takeda and Oda were at war, and their engagement was called off. (Well...this is a political marriage where the interests of both feudal lord families coincide...There's nothing we can do about it.) Shinshoin is an old temple founded by the princess of Takeda Shingen. Although the temple is not flashy or large, I felt it had a certain elegance to it. It is well maintained and is clearly still respected. The temple also had the grave of Matsuhime (Shinmatsuni). We have joined hands. I visited with Hachioji ramen as a set. Please come and visit the ancient temple of the princess who lived a minor but interesting life of Mr. Takeda. (Translated by Google) This temple is said to have originated when Takeda Shingen's fourth daughter, Matsuhime, fled to this area when the Takeda clan fell, had her hair shaved at Shingen-in Temple, and set up a hermitage here (Shinsho-ni). Matsuhime was Oda Nobutada's fiancée, and when Nobunaga sent reinforcements to Ieyasu, their political marriage was broken off, but even after the fall of Takeda, a messenger from Nobutada came to greet her, and she also tried to go to him. However, during the Honno-ji Incident, Nobutada also committed suicide (there is an anecdote that his son, Sanboshi, was actually the child he had with Matsuhime), and after Tokudo, Nobutada's body was also mourned along with the Takeda clan. Her way of life, which played a major role in the finale of the Sengoku period, is truly moving. This area of Hachioji is very interesting, as there are many historical sites that tell the story of what happened to the Takeda family, such as Matsuhime, Nishina Morinobu's daughter (Kogokuhime), Okubo Nagayasu, and Hachioji Sennin Doshin. Tokyo Asobi Mare is a vast indoor amusement center offering a variety of thrilling activities for children. It boasts mini go-karts, ball pits, slides, and even a designated area for snow play called "Snow Town." While some attractions require an additional fee, there are plenty of free options to keep the kids entertained. Snow Town provides artificial snow and ice for sledding fun, complete with rain boots for visitors' convenience.
You'd definitely spend a whole day here if you take your time with kids at each of the activities offered. It's best to go during the weekday when the crowd is always smaller - 1100 yen when booked through the link provided. Some attractions like train ride, excavator operation and others... do cost small extra but they will be worthwhile. Hand sanitizers are placed everywhere to protect you and others. Some staff did speak basic English, which is good. Snowtown is a must visit, no additional charge for the entry. I took my relatives kids but they were totally going banana 🍌 with the ice flakes. A great visit for any family with kids.

Great place to go to, they have unlimited access to arcade games such as pacman and other machines you see in arcades. It’s worth it for the price! Highly recommend. We enjoyed a lot as there are lots of places to wander around such as an animal corner that only costs 200 yen for feeding chicks or rabbits, as well as taking home goldfish! What i enjoyed the most is the snow town, a whole area full of snow, you can borrow boots (free of charge) as well as toys to play in the snow. I saw a comment here complaining about throwing snowballs, there was a clear sign displayed that people should not throw snowballs at each other as they may cause harm. Maybe read the rules properly next time. Staff were friendly and quick. Highly recommended place for kids, teenagers like me, and adults as well!

A great indoor amusement park/play area for kids. Some of the activities cost additional money but lots of things for the kids to enjoy. They also have "Snow Town" where there is fake snow/ice. Kods can use the sleds. They also provide raonboots when entering in the Snow Town area. The kids also enjoyed the mirror mazes but it may be disorienting/scary for small children. It's conveniently located with a McDonald's which is a plus when we wanted to go back. However there are snacks and a coffee shop located on site. Great place!

As almost all places in Japan, it's too restrictive. Everything is "dame" (japanese word for you cannot do this). The playground part is fun, the snow part of the park, wich is usually what people comes to enjoy, is very restrictive. The employee was rude, screaming to my kids that they cannot, walk here, cannot play there, cannot make snowballs etc. It was a waste of time, money, and a frustrating experience. I'll never go back to that dull place and if you want your kids to have fun, try somewhere else.

The じゃぶじゃぶ池 area doesn’t get much use—most kids prefer playing in the nearby river, which is more popular. It’s a safe spot for children since the water level is quite low. The parking lot is very small, so on weekends, you’ll likely have to wait for someone to leave. That said, it’s super convenient if you come by bicycle.

Ryonan Park is a beautiful and spacious park that provides a calming and relaxing environment for visitors. It's perfect for leisurely walks and unwinding from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. One notable aspect of Ryonan Park is its cleanliness, including the well-maintained toilets. Visitors can expect a hygienic and pleasant experience during their visit. If you are a dog lover, you'll be delighted to know that Ryonan Park is a popular spot for dog owners to walk their furry companions, particularly between 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM. It's a great opportunity to admire different dog breeds and have pleasant encounters with fellow pet lovers. However, it's important to note that the parking area at Ryonan Park has a closing time of 5 PM. Visitors should plan their visit accordingly to avoid any inconvenience. In conclusion, Ryonan Park is a beautiful sanctuary with ample space for walking and relaxation. The clean facilities, including the well-maintained toilets, add to the overall positive experience. Just remember to plan your visit before 5 PM if you plan to park your vehicle.

(Translated by Google) We'd like to introduce you to Ryonan Park, located south of the Musashino Mausoleum of Emperor Showa! Tokyo Metropolitan Ryonan Park is a multi-purpose park with a baseball field across the Minami-Asakawa River, and a children's playground and public swimming pool on the south side of the river! The multi-purpose park side is lush with trees and flowers that bloom throughout the year, allowing you to enjoy flowers throughout the seasons! It's especially famous for its beautiful cherry blossoms in spring, making it a great spot for cherry blossom viewing! The park also has a paddling pool that's open from Golden Week through the summer, allowing you to splash around in the pool! The park has two baseball fields, but reservations are required. Please register through the Tokyo Metropolitan Park Sports and Recreation Reservation System before making a reservation! In addition to the fields, the park also has a cherry blossom-lined path that you can walk around for about 500 meters, making it a popular spot with many people in the spring! Along the cherry blossom-lined path, there are also playground equipment for stretching, making it a great place to get some exercise! The playground on the south side of Minami-Asakawa River features athletic slides, swings, and other play equipment. The yellow ground around the playground is a highly cushioned, sponge-like surface that absorbs shock when children fall! Right next to the playground is a public swimming pool, making it a popular summer getaway for families and children! I also enjoy walking in this multi-purpose park with advanced barrier-free access, taking breaks on one of the park's many benches to catch up on my daily exercise! It's such a pleasant park! Visitors are enjoying themselves in their own way, walking and stretching! Parents and children are engrossed in searching for river creatures, smiling and enjoying themselves, creating a truly peaceful moment at Minami-Asakawa River! The park also has an information center, separate restrooms for men and women, and multi-purpose restrooms, so you can enjoy the park safely! By the way, you cannot take any of the animals in the park home, so if you catch one, please return it to the wild! Why not come and play with your children at Tokyo Metropolitan Ryonan Park in Hachioji, where you can feel the peaceful times? All you need is a packed lunch, a water bottle, and a blue tarp, and you can enjoy the park full of greenery and nature all day! Finally, in the summer, please be sure to take precautions against heatstroke! This explanation has gotten quite long, so I'll wrap it up here! With that, I hope that the flowers of your smiles will bloom in full bloom, and I will put down my pen here. Historical landmark
In June 2023, visitors encountered a magnificent cedar tree that had stood for over a century at Takosugi. This landmark was accompanied by an intriguing octopus statue nearby, which resembled the shape of a tako. Adjacent to the giant cedar tree, there stood another smaller sculpture called Hippari-tako. At Yakuoin shops in the vicinity, tourists could purchase amulets featuring this image.
Part of the path that leads up! Beautiful statues, signs in Japanese only.

(Translated by Google) 2025.3.15 This cedar tree has roots that curve like the legs of an octopus, and has been designated as a natural monument by Hachioji City. It is a large cedar tree with a height of 37 meters and a trunk circumference (measured at human eye level) of approximately 6 meters, making it the second largest tree on Mt. Takao after Iimori Cedar. The tree is over 450 years old, and a fence was built in 2007 to protect it because too many people touching it would be bad for the tree. Takosugi is worshiped as a cedar that brings good luck as it is believed to open the way = good luck. Those who wish to receive divine blessings are said to stroke the octopus stone monument (hippari tako) that was made in place of the tree. It was named for its roots, which twist and turn like the tentacles of an octopus. Legend has it that the roots moved out of the way to help people during construction on the approach to the shrine, and it is believed to bring good fortune in passing exams and prosperity in business. In the past, there was no fence and you could touch the tree, but now it is surrounded by a fence for protection. The tree is often crowded with tourists on weekends and holidays, causing traffic jams on the sidewalks, so if you want to take your time looking around, we recommend visiting on weekdays or in the mornings. While it offers convenience and is a popular tourist destination, it is also a symbolic presence that makes you think about the relationship between nature and humans and how we should preserve it. In addition to Takosugi, Mount Takao is home to many other giant cedar trees, and even when driving on the Chuo Expressway from Hachioji towards Yamanashi, the view of Mount Takao with its giant cedars jutting out is striking. I looked around wondering, "Which one is Takosugi?" while driving safely, of course. Katakura Joseki Park is a picturesque and enchanting green space adorned with charming ponds, serving as dwellings for frogs. In the springtime, one can witness the abundance of frog spawn and tadpoles. Furthermore, an unperturbed snake, believed to be non-venomous, has been observed within the park's premises. The park also boasts a functioning water wheel and an elevated Shrine/Jinja accessible via a set of stairs atop a hill.
It is a beautiful park with ponds. Few ponds are habitats for frogs. In the spring season you can see a lot of frog eggs and tadpoles. I've also seen a snake here, apparently it's not poisonous. The park has a working water wheel. If you climb a few stairs, there is a Shrine/Jinja at the top of the hill. There are many Sakura trees and during cherry blossom it is magical. Joseki park is different from other parks and worth a visit. It also connects to another park from the hill. In the night depending on the season, you can also see fireflies.

A delightful mini-taste of nature, and a chance to meet with some of the friendly dogs and their owners going for a walk. Good for a picnic. Nearby is Tsudoinomori, an open space where locals will sit and enjoy the sun, kids will play and dogs will run.

Free park; neatly maintained but sometimes steep paths. Interesting sculptures. Well maintained wooden walkways over iris pond. Interesting overshot waterwheel, but not milling anything. Several other display areas (wisteria, lily etc). Seems popular with bird-watching photographers. Easy to spend an hour or more here. Parking a little tricky, best approached from the east.

It used to be held over two days, but now it's only one day. There used to be a fish grab event, but I wonder if that's been discontinued because of COVID-19? Perhaps to combat the boiling heat, it seems they're not cooking the fish on site, but instead making them at the community center. What surprised me was that the shaved ice and frankfurters were the same prices as they were a few years ago! With prices soaring these days, I can only be grateful to the organizers! Thanks to them, I was able to treat my grandson to two shaved ices, so thank you very much. During the Sengoku period, the Kai-Takeda clan was driven to extinction by the combined forces of Oda and Tokugawa, and at the time of the collapse, Matsuhime, the fourth daughter (sixth daughter) of Takeda Shingen, became a nun at this temple and became a nun. It is said that it is famous for its It is also said that Shingen-in was a prayer temple for Ujiteru Hojo, the lord of Hachioji Castle. This is an old temple that has deep ties to both the Kai Takeda clan and the Odawara Hojo clan. (Although they were enemies during the Battle of Mimasu Pass, it seems that Takeda Shingen's fourth daughter, Matsuhime, and Takeda Katsuyori's daughter, Sadahime, both relied on the Hojo clan and fled together.) *To be exact, there were two more princesses, Kotokuhime and Kaguhime, making it a total of four people. It was a relatively clean, simple and bland temple, but I think you'll be able to feel something if you prepare for the history before visiting. Takeda/Hojo is a hero of the Sengoku period, so maybe it's just my imagination that it feels small and elegant and dignified in some places... Even if it was during the Sengoku turbulent times... I was deeply moved by the fact that Matsuhime (and Sadahime, Kotohime, and Kaguhime) must have had a very anxious time when they went to this area after the fall of the Takeda clan. Poor me. It's relatively close to Tokyo, so be sure to stop by and visit.
