Historic Walking Areas
The Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, which dates back to 1526, has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its minimal environmental impact. Visitors can explore the remnants of this historic mine and see first-hand how it impacted Japan's economy through trade with Europe. The well-preserved roads, tunnels, samurai houses, and artifacts offer a glimpse into the past and allow visitors to appreciate the hard work undertaken by laborers to extract silver in challenging conditions.
We visited this place on 8 october 2023. The day was little bit rainy but didn't interrupt our visit to this UNESCO World heritage site. We started our journey from Yamaguchi city. The way to Shimane was also nice and enjoyable. It was a guided tour. First, we visited the art museum. It is recommended to visit before you go to the site. You can know the history thoroughly. Then it will be easy to you to visualize the 500 years old silver mine civilization. The place is quite thrilling full with history. You can see 500 years ago Barbara shop, the house of Samurai, old house and court building. Here, everything was kept as you can imagine yourself and go back 500 years ago. Although we can not visit the actual mine area the trip was worthy as well. Strongly recommended.

Interesting to go into the old silver mine. Recommend wearing the hard hat provided unless you are very short as the ceiling is low in many places and we bumped our heads a few times. There were some pictures of what the mining working conditions were like for the workers. Would have been a hard life.

This is a UNESCO World Heritage silver mine. Walking around Iwami Ginzan, I felt the harsh conditions under which people worked to earn money in those days. A guide accompanied us, providing detailed and easy-to-understand explanations, making the experience both enjoyable and informative.

The Iwami Ginzan historic site is impressive for its preserved old structures and landscape. It's clear that a considerable budget has been invested in maintaining the authenticity of this heritage site.
T. G — Google review
This was a fun experience. If you come here expecting to go deep under ground in a deep, vast tunnel you will be let down. The tunnel is nice to walk through but it's not the most thrilling thing in the world so its best to keep your expectations low. What really made this experience special was hiring a bicycle and riding through the beautiful traditional buildings in the town which leads up to the mine.
Martyn Q — Google review
Iwami Ginza Mines is a great experience. Very peaceful and relaxing. There is only two ways to reach the mine walk or hire a bicycle some of which are electric. Its a 2.5 km easy walk with things to see along the way (temples, shrines and beautiful scenery and toilets). The mine cost is 500 yen and foreigners get a discount. A must see.
Nathan C — Google review
I really enjoy when visiting Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine. This place, become UNESCO heritage site because here you will find the trace of the glory silver mine 400 years ago. Roads, tunnels, Samurai's house, and artifacts as remnants of silver mine still exists until now. This place is conserved well until now. Had trade with Europe, prove this silver mine activity affected Japan's economy at that time. Tour into the tunnel will give you the idea how the labors work to get the silver. It really hard to work under having water problems, and the shortage of light and fresh air in the past. Please visit Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, you will not regret!!
Rahmah D — Google review
This is a great place to take a walk and it is a important place during Japanese history. It provide funds during 15~16 century. The Major issue is lack of English resource. It is hard for Foreign visitors to understand the picture by using audio guide. As a UNESCO site, I think it is reasonable to training small number of English guide.

The Iwami Ginzan World Heritage Center is a museum that showcases the history and artifacts of a centuries-old silver mine. The center features models and archaeological finds from the site, providing visitors with an in-depth understanding of the area's rich history. For first-time visitors arriving by car, this center offers a safe and convenient parking option.
Was very well set up, very friendly staff and awesome exhibits showing everything from trade routes to 3d maps of the mines themselves. Lots to see here and well worth the entry fee
Only I — Google review
For a first time visitor by car, this is the safer and easier place to park your car. You will have to take a public bus from this center to the gateway to the Iwami-Ginzan area, which is basically one narrow street stretching from lower part of the creek to the upper part of the creek. The bus ride would cost yen 240 (US$2 or less), while the car park was free and abundant at this center. It turned out that getting a rental bicycle (electric powered one at yen 700 for two hours) at a former gas station near the lower bus stop would be ideal lakes you enjoy uphill walk without shades for 2 km or so.
Tadayuki H — Google review
This museum is not a typical tourist attraction or scenic landmark, but a serious place dedicated to learning about the history of the region. Its exhibits are carefully curated to provide educational value rather than entertainment, making it ideal for visitors with a genuine interest in the area's historical development. A worthwhile stop for those seeking depth and context in their travels.

If you want to park for free and take the bus to the village it’s a good way to get there. But walking alone is probably out of the option considering the ‘caution bears’ sign
Bryan V — Google review
Great center that introduces to the whole history of the mining region in quite an interactive way! Almost all the information is accompanied with English translation which is very nice. It is only 20 min walk from the center of the charming Omori village. So, if anyone is interested, I had a perfect day taking a 10:15am bus from Hiroshima directly to this center, learned about mining, walked to Omori and browsed it around a bit (it is gorgeous!), and from there took a 15 min ride (google maps knows it all) on a very cute small electric bus to the Ryugenji mine shaft (open to public without guides). And finally hiked from there for three hours through majestic forest to one of the most authentic hot springs in the country in Yunotsu. Memorable day full of history, nature, hiking, and relaxation!
Levon — Google review
A must stop for any history, geology or geography enthusiast. Wonderful presentation, amazing staff, just awesome.

This center highlights the contributions of Japan to earth in terms of Silver. Not many may know that Japan was mining 90% of the world's supply of silver 300 years ago... recommend a visit. The trails are good too for the hiking enthusiasts.

The local history museum in Nima, named the Nima Sand Museum, was established in 1991 and showcases a variety of exhibits related to sand. It boasts an impressive collection of artistic hourglasses and features the world's largest hourglass, which has a duration of one year. The museum also includes a souvenir shop for visitors. The town where it is located is small but worth visiting, particularly if it falls along your travel route.
It is a museum that presents the topic of sand in science and art. And works of art were exhibited inside too. There are workshops that you can try various handicrafts which related to sand and glass. I think both adults and children can enjoy here. This place is one of the places you should visit when you visit Shimane.
Alis C — Google review
The parking lot is difficult to find and is not close to the building. The museum itself was small and didn’t have much to see, so I think the cost was not worth it. They also gave us a postcard to decorate with colored sand. I think was the best part. They also do crafts on select days that you can pay to do. You can also get the manhole card to collect at the Road Station close by!
Melody M — Google review
It was a very unique and rewarding experience. The place has the largest hourglass in the world or, shall I say, year glass, as it is flipped once a year only. There some very aesthetic art installations as well. I deducted one star as: - the place could be refreshed - the place could be expanded - more descriptions in English would help international visitors
Maciej K — Google review
This is a great, spacious building that is devoted to sand and artistic, beautifully crafted hour glasses. It also holds the world's largest hour glass that last for one year! I really enjoyed this small museum. There's also a nice park near by. The town is small but worth stoping by if it's on your route. It's a little less than an our from izumoshi station using local train. Cost is ¥700. Walkable from Nima station. Wall across to the intersection with the Lawson and turn right. You'll see the glass pyramids. 10- 15 minute walk.
The P — Google review
Worth spending an hour if you are in the area. A small but interesting museum about hourglass which has the biggest hourglass in the world. Foreigners get a 50% discount if they show a valid passport/residence card. No English language descriptions though which can be a bore if you cannot read Japanese. There are many kinds of hourglasses on display including some stylish pieces (there is a blue hourglass to test the intensity of your love, of course both the partners need to hold it together) There is a sand art corner also for the artist in you. This was not my main destination in this area but I am glad I dropped by. I bought a nice hourglass (3 minutes time) and had a good Ice cream in the Summer heat .
Vinayak B — Google review
We visited this museum with lab mates when we went for a lab tour. It's worth to send half a day here. There are many activities which keeps us engaged all the time. They have microscopes too look at the sand grains which is really amazing. Also they have kind of designs which is simply cool. The specialty of this museum is this has a one year sand clock. Along with they have many small clocks which has many durations. At the end they have a different color sands where we can make some design, sketch and coloring.
Sundaravel M — Google review
The museum as such is not particularly interesting. Locals say that it doesn't make much sense. It just exists because one person at the city hall across the street thought it to be great. But, on the other hand, it is used for local events, like live concerts. And for things like this, I think this is a great place. Of course there are buildings for gatherings already right across the street. In case you wonder: no there is no cultural or historical reason for this museum. Which makes me wonder why it's called museum. There is a 'famous' beach nearby - Kotogahama. Maybe this is the inspiration for this building. The last time I bought the soft ice they offer, it was ice but not soft ice what I received.
Michael V — Google review
Foreigers get a discount. The museum has the worlds largest hourglass in the world which measures the length of a year. Has some interesting art too. It also has a corner where you can make your own candle, necklace and other stuff

A beautiful mountain to go hiking. The whole way up you traverse through beautiful thick forest. There a loads of wild flowers and different species of trees to admire. There are steps almost all the way up, and plenty of places to have a rest on the way. It gets a little steeper near the top, but even beginners or people with little hiking experience will be able to reach the summit! And you will be rewarded with amazing views from the top!

Located on the way back from Ryugenji Mabu, Shimizudani Refinery Ruins can be easily reached downhill without pedaling. This site represents a failed effort to restart silver production during the Meiji era, where 350 years of mined silver vanished. It's considered a relic and is a great spot for leisure time. Visitors can appreciate the impressive handiwork of the local old silver mine and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings as well as delicious food at nearby restaurants.

Did you fail to conduct a quality survey, or did you fail to calculate the profitability? It was an investment equivalent to several billion yen today... People in the old days are rough! But now it has a moss-covered, ancient ruins feel to it, and we enjoy it. The smelter site looks more atmospheric when viewed from below. If you don't have time, I don't think you need to go up to the top. The Iwami Ginzan Museum offers a pleasant and educational experience for visitors. In addition to exploring the mine, one can also discover the charm of the nearby rural village. Unlike other tourist organizations, this museum showcases original artifacts from the Edo period, providing a glimpse into the rich history of Iwami Ginzan. The friendly and knowledgeable staff further enhance the visit with their expertise and helpfulness.
A good day out with good walking - seeing not just the mine (standard visit can only see one mineshaft; a special 4000 yen visit to another shaft is possible but requires booking and guide and does not operate everyday) but rural village. It is not busy, which is a positive in many ways and locals are friendly.

Museum in a historical place, with parts still remaining from Edo period. Exhibition shows original remains from the long history of Iwami Ginzan. This museum isn't part of the local tourist organisation (which is good). Staff is very knowledgeable about the subject, kind and helpful.

Hidenori T — Google review
(Translated by Google) While visiting the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine World Heritage Site and strolling through the streets of Omori, I passed by the Iwami Ginzan Museum. The building's facade, with its old-fashioned, historic design, prompted me to take a photo, but due to time constraints, I ended up not going inside. However, upon further research, I discovered that this facility is an important base for gaining deeper insight into the World Heritage Site and has a fascinating historical background. The museum, officially known as the "Potato Magistrate Museum," as its name suggests, features exhibits centered on the achievements of Ido Heizaemon, the magistrate who saved people during the Great Famine by popularizing sweet potatoes. This answers the simple question, "Why the potato magistrate?" Even just knowing this fact makes the history of Iwami Ginzan feel more familiar. The building itself also bears witness to its changing history. It was originally the site of a jin'ya (camp) where the shogunate's magistrate's office was located during the Edo period. The current museum building is a repurposed version of the former Nima County Office, built in 1902. The fact that a Meiji-era administrative center stands on the site of a former magistrate's office evokes a sense of the complex history of the area. The exhibits include valuable materials such as mining tools, ancient documents, and picture scrolls from the Sengoku period through the Edo period, when the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine was at its height, as well as a wealth of mineral specimens, including silver ore. This comprehensive guide to the 500-year history of the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and the mining technology of the time makes it an ideal place to get a general understanding before exploring the Omori townscape and ruins such as Ryugenji Mabu. As public vehicles are restricted from entering the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, the most convenient way to get there is to take a bus from JR Oda City Station and get off at the "Omori Daikansho Ato" bus stop. If you come by car, you'll need to park in the World Heritage Center's parking lot (free) and then take a local bus from there. Admission is 600 yen for adults (300 yen for elementary and junior high school students), and some people say that the volume of exhibits is lacking compared to other World Heritage Centers, but considering the condensed historical exhibits that can only be seen here and its location on the site of a former magistrate's office, I've come to realise that it's a facility worth stopping by at least once. Next time I'll make time to go inside.

The Sanbe Jomon Forest Museum is an intriguing place that showcases the natural history of the area. It features remarkably preserved, ancient trees that have been buried deep underground for thousands of years. These trees offer a unique glimpse into the past while also appearing surprisingly well-preserved as if they were recently buried. The museum provides an opportunity to learn about the geography and history of the region, making it a great destination for those interested in these subjects.
It is hard to expect standing huge trees buried under deep ground with little changes through thousands years. I was suppressed by seeing them preserved so clean despite the long era, and they are so lively to seem to be buried recently. There still are many other trees buried in this area, not excavated, which means I am standing right upon those trees of the past. As I see them directly with my eyes, I can live in the past and the present at the same time.

Incredible small museum “isolated” in the countryside where we learned how 3 miracles of nature safeguarded thousand years old trees with their roots still in the ground

Cool museum to learn geography and history of the area. It is also nice to see how the engineers dig the trees.

Some very old trees that were underground for 10,000 years. Don't miss it if you're nearby, but maybe not worth the trip if you come from further away. Note that there isn't much in English.

When already enjoying the area around Mount Sense or the World Heritage sites of Iwami-Ginzan, I would suggest to add this place on your Schedule. Well prepared and informative. Takes about 90 minutes for the exhibition.

(Translated by Google) Part 14 of our historical exploration! The Sanbe Jomon Forest Museum was the facility I was most looking forward to on this trip. I reserved a guide in advance on the website (1,000 yen for 30 minutes) and admission was 300 yen. I entered the museum at 9:00 AM when it opened. From the entrance to the underground buried forest exhibit, I was constantly excited. Jomon cedar trees, buried by the eruption of Mt. Sanbe approximately 4,000 years ago, appeared before my eyes, still rooted and with their long trunks. The trunks, washed away by a mudslide, were also preserved in their original state. Listening to the guide's detailed explanations as we progressed, I was deeply moved at every turn. After the 30-minute guided tour, I continued to look closely, and I was moved to tears. Since it wasn't in a settlement area, there were no human bones or pottery, but some of the deep layers of volcanic ash remained intact, and I witnessed the power of nature. While there are other buried forests throughout Japan, discovering one in this state is rare, even on a global scale, and it was a truly valuable experience. Personally, I'm interested in the history of the Jomon and Yayoi periods, so this is a place I want to visit regularly. I know that they're making efforts to preserve it every day, and I know it must be difficult, but I hope they continue to do so. Thank you for the detailed guide. I look at the straps every day, which can only be purchased locally. I've been looking at the photos every day since I got home, but honestly, photos don't convey the impact at all, so I definitely want you to go and see it for yourself❗️ (Original)

The forest, which was trapped underground by volcanic activity, has been preserved in a state that allows it to be viewed, something you won't find anywhere else. I'm impressed not only by the exhibits but also by the technology used to display them in this state. The admission fee is also exceptionally reasonable, making this one of Shimane's most recommended spots. (Translated by Google) Admission is 300 yen. A series of coincidences has miraculously left this Jomon period forest buried under volcanic ash and sediment. What's amazing is that the wood still smells as if it's alive. Time has stood still as the air has been cut off and the area has been vacuum-packed. It's hard to convey in a photograph, but each cedar tree is huge, and you get a sense of the sheer scale of the ancient forest. Currently, the wood is preserved by keeping it dry and applying trehalose. The Kumagai House is a magnificent and historically significant attraction located in a picturesque traditional town. It offers visitors the opportunity to partake in a traditional cooking lesson alongside knowledgeable guides. During my visit, I had the chance to witness the Hina Festival display, which showcased an array of beautiful dolls. The cooking demonstration was captivating as I actively participated in every aspect, including wood chopping, rice washing, and operating a traditional wood-fire stove.
¥320 entrance per person for foreigners. Lovely handmade bento bukuro for only ¥850—I am so happy to be able to spot and purchase it.

The fewer tourists you encounter on the Iwami Ginzan Kaidō, the more you can immerse yourself in its cinematic atmosphere. Walking the historic route in near solitude allows the surrounding landscape, ancient architecture and tranquil air to transport you back in time. It's a rare place where the absence of crowds enhances the experience, like stepping onto the set of a drama.

Some friends and I attended the traditional cooking demonstration, which was great! Learning how rice was traditionally washed and measured, chopping wood, stoking the fire, we participated in every step of the process, which was really fun and rewarding. Plus, delicious onigiri at the end. The house itself was lovely, the hina doll display was beautiful, and our host was so kind and encouraging. Totally recommend stopping in, just to look, or for a longer experience:)

I visited the Kumagai House to participate in a traditional cooking lesson with some friends and guides. The town itself is very beautiful and traditional, and the Kumagai House especially was very grand and full of history. At the time I visited, the family had many dolls on display for Hina Festival and it was very beautiful. The cooking demonstration was fascinating, and we learned and participated in every step of the cooking process, from chopping wood, to washing rice, to stoking the traditional wood-fire stove. We even learned about the different ways to store and serve rice the old-fashioned way, not wasting a single grain. In the end, our freshly made onigiri were delicious! I recommend visiting the Kumagai house, whether just stopping by or signing up for a tour like this one!

History of the Kumagai Family According to some old documents, the family's ancestors would live in Mt. Sennoyama and serve under the Mori clan as local officials to supervise silver miners in the beginning of the Edo period. According to a family record, a family named Kumagai who lived elsewhere handed over their name and property to another family named Tagiya who lived in Omori in 1729, which was the dawn of the Kumagai family in Omori. The Kumagai family conducted various kinds of business such as silver mining, sake brewing, inspecting tribute silver, supervising silver mines partly as a substitute for the Tokugawa Shogunate, and arranging all necessaries for the local governor's office. In addition, the head of the family in each generation served as an Elder in Omori town. Thus, they were one of the most influential merchant' families in the Iwami Ginzan area.

On July 21, 2021, Kotogahama Beach attracted visitors with its renowned singing sand and stunning shoreline. This popular destination boasted clean sands similar to those found in Australia without any litter, making it a picturesque spot. The water is highly transparent, but depending on the time of day and location, microplastics and Hangul labels can be found floating in the water, making me hesitant to dip my face in the water. Since the water is shallow, it is best to swim away from such areas. There was a small beach house run by a local, and we ate homemade curry there. After all, it is beef curry as it is only in western Japan. As expected, this place is far from the city, and not many people came even on Saturdays and Sundays. The parking fee was 1,000 yen for beachgoers and 300 yen for tourists, but the vacant lot next to the private house in front of the entrance was 500 yen, so I parked there. There weren't even any vending machines nearby, so I bought my drinks at a private store with a green vinyl canopy. We sell 500ml and 2 liter teas and sweets. Unfortunately, it was raining when I visited, so the sand didn't cry, but the sand on the beach is so fine that it looks comfortable even with bare feet. There is also a parking lot. [postscript] I had some free time at work, so I stopped by for the first time in a while. Of course, thanks to the efforts of the local people, the beaches are kept clean by cleaning up plastic waste and other debris. Littering is strictly prohibited. (Translated by Google) Kigami Shrine is located in Omori-cho, Oda City, Shimane Prefecture, about 6.3 km southeast of JR Nima Station. It is listed in the Engishiki Shinmei-cho (Choice of Shinto Shrines), and formerly held the rank of prefectural shrine. Originally enshrined on a high mountain in Maji, Nima-cho, on the east coast of Iwami Province, it was worshipped as the deity of safe navigation and maritime defense. It has been pointed out that Kigami means "turtle god," and the shrine's crest is also associated with the legend of a tortoise shell and turtle stone. When the Ouchi clan acquired the silver mine in 1434, the shrine was relocated to Mt. Kogo in Omori-cho as the clan's guardian deity. When the Mori clan acquired the silver mine in 1577, the shrine was moved to its current location and named Kigami Shrine Omori Daimyojin. He is said to be "the god of drought relief and epidemic prevention, and is the guardian deity of Omori." The name "Omori" comes from the fact that a large tree grew so lushly in the area that it resembled a forest, and that the area attracted great devotion around this tree, which is also the origin of the town's current name. This large tree was destroyed along with the shrine building in a major fire in Omori Town in 1800 (Kansei 12) during the late Edo period. The current worship hall (designated a tangible cultural property of Shimane Prefecture) was rebuilt in 1812 (Bunka 9). The multi-story worship hall is in the irimoya style with a tiled roof, and is modeled after the style of Kameido Tenmangu Shrine (Kameido Tenjin Shrine) in Edo. The brilliantly colored ceiling painting "Crying Dragon" on the mirrored ceiling was created in 1818 by Kajitani Enrin Saimoriyasu, a painter from the foot of Mt. Sanbe. Like the painting on the ceiling of the Yakushido Hall of Nikko Toshogu Shrine, if you stand directly below the painting and clap your hands, the ceiling will ring out. There are also coffered ceilings on either side of the mirrored ceiling, and each square is painted with a traditional crest. Similar traditional crests can also be seen at Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The enshrined deity is Omononushi-no-Kami (Yamato-Omononushi-Kushimi-no-Mikoto). " and is also famous as a god of matchmaking. Takemikazuchi-no-Mikoto, Sainushi-no-Mikoto, and Amenogoyane-no-Mikoto are enshrined here. Shrines within the grounds include an Inari shrine and a Tenmangu shrine. Enshrined within the grounds is a "Turtle Stone," which is said to have been dedicated during the Engi era (901-923) in the early Heian period. It was carried when the shrine was moved to Mt. Atago during the Eikyo era (1429-1441), but was forgotten when it was moved to its current location during the Tensho era (1573-1592). The Turtle Stone made it down the mountain on its own, but Due to its weight, the stone sank to the riverbed at the foot of the mountain. After that, when passing by the river, a strange sound like grinding azuki beans could be heard coming from within. A curious person pulled it out and it was left by the roadside until the Taisho era (1912-1926), where it came to be called the Azuki Stone. One night, the stone appeared in the dream of a certain Tanaka, who told him what had happened, and it was decided that the stone would return to its place within the grounds of our shrine. Every year in October, the Miyuki Festival, a major autumn festival, is held here. Tenshinjin Shashasuna Daimyojin, which enshrines Sukunahikona no Mikoto, is located about 1km away. The procession continues to the enclave of Takasago, where the shrine is located. The name "Omori," where the shrine is located, comes from the former village of Omori in Nima County, Iwami Province. In 1896, the Nima County Office was established in Omori Village. In 1903, Omori Village was incorporated as a town and became Omori Town. In 1951, Omori Town and Mizukami Village merged to form Omori Town. In 1956, Omori Town, Isotake Village, and Oya Village were incorporated into Oda City. The highlight of Jogami Shrine is the brightly colored ``Nakiryu'' on the mirrored ceiling of the hall of worship. If you sit directly under the painting and clap your hands, you will hear a clear ringing sound, just like a dragon's cry. The enshrined deity is Okuninushi no Mikoto, and the shrine building is a multi-story worship hall with a tiled roof and Irimoyazukuri style modeled after Kameido Tenmangu Shrine in Edo. According to the shrine's biography, in 1434, the Ouchi clan moved from Majitakayama, Numa District to Atagoyama in Omori Town, and in 1577, the Mori clan moved to their current location. , is said to have been built. He is said to be ``Akira, the god of drought relief,'' and is the guardian deity of Omori. The current shrine building was rebuilt in 1812. The worship hall (a prefectural cultural property) is a double-faced worship hall in the Tang and Japanese styles, with a multi-layered roof and a gabled roof. On the coffered ceiling of the hall of worship, a richly colored singing dragon is painted by Enrin Saimoriyasu Kajitani, an artist from the foothills of Mt. It is also interesting to see that the family crests of the silver mine and Omori town officials who were involved in the construction at the time are painted on the coffered ceiling. It was a wonderful place.

Ryugenji Mabu - Entrance is a significant historical landmark that forms part of the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine. This 18th-century tunnel offers a glimpse into traditional mining methods used in the past. The site showcases old techniques employed during silver extraction, and visitors can explore the tunnels to experience this historical wonder firsthand.

At the entrance to Ryugenji Mabu, there is an entrance fee of 500 yen, with the convenience of cashless payment. The short tour inside takes about 30 minutes and offers a fascinating glimpse into the historic mining tunnels. Although compact, the experience is immersive, with the cool, damp air and narrow passageways bringing the history of Iwami Ginzan to life. It's a well-organised visit, perfect for a short but memorable stopover.

Nice temple to visit if you're in the area.

It's more interesting than I thought cos it's the HISTORY of the mine that makes it interesting to visit. We were lucky to have a local guide, but there isn't really one needed for a visit. It's not a cave but a mine shaft. Ceiling is low over the first few metres but gets higher further in. Flat shaft floor, so it's easy to walk. Overall maybe 10 minutes from entrance to exit when rushed. But for getting a feel what working in here was like, one should stop and look around and into the side shafts (some look incredibly narrow for people having had to work in there), and in January maybe even spot some hibernating bats.

The Shimane Prefectural Nature Museum of Mt. Sanbe, also known as "Sahimel," is a childhood nostalgia-filled place that is delightful to revisit with family. It showcases an engaging historical exhibition on the natural wonders of Shimane, which never fails to educate and captivate visitors. The children particularly enjoyed the planetarium shows, despite their aversion to darkness, and expressed their desire to return in the future.
Lovely nature museum. Explains geography and history of Sanbe, as well as habits. Great kids playing areas inspiring nature and science. Free (including to the admissions) planetarium with the latest projector.

Nice display of nature and geography. The dinosaurs and other animal exhibits are well arranged and informative too. The planetarium show is good. Special mention to the kids play area. Visiting this museum is fun for both kids and adults. The drive around Mt.Sanbe is very beautiful and scenic.

I also watched the planetarium, and it was wonderful to listen to a female attendant's slow, gentle, and detailed explanation of the night sky above Mt. It was a wonderful facility where you can learn about a variety of things, including the formation of the Earth, the formation of Mt. The Tatsunogozen Shrine offers a mesmerizing Kagura performance, characterized by its awe-inspiring dance. The dancers skillfully express themselves through their movements and choreography, accompanied by traditional music that adds depth to the performance. The close proximity between the audience and performers creates an immersive experience for spectators. One particularly impressive aspect is the sword fighting between dancers, showcasing their incredible talent. Additionally, the dragon's dance choreography stands out as remarkable.
In this shrine, there is Kagura performance which is very fantastic dance. The dancers play with their heart, describe through their choreography and skillful dance movements. Traditional music strengthens the soul of dance. The close distance between the dancers and audiences, make audiences feel like become part of the performances. What makes me impressed is when the dancers fight each other by using swords. It really wonderful dance choreography because not easy to dance with swords. Also, I like the choreography of the dragon's dance. Totally, the Kagura performance such a complete of entertainment which inside you find the good costume, good mask, dance, and music. When I think that that giant snake is made of bamboo and washi paper, I really admire their technical ability. Nestled in the historical heart of Omori Town, the Kawashima Family Residence, also known as the Samurai House, offers a fascinating glimpse into Japan's feudal past. This samurai residence was built in the early 1800s and is the remains of a magistrate official. The Kawashima family moved to Omori for generations, managing the silver mine and controlling the silver mine territory. Based on documents from the time, it is estimated that the main building was rebuilt after the Great Fire in 1800, which destroyed most of the townscape, and was later expanded by 1825. The house has a gate facing the street, and when you pass through the gate, you can see the main house with a formal entrance. The main house looks like a one-story building, but there is a second floor above the dirt floor and storage room, and the guest room faces the garden. It was designated as a designated ruin by Ota City in 1993 because it clearly represents the stance of a senior samurai and the residence of a silver mine official. When the main house was rebuilt, the heads of the family were the fifth generation Tokubei and the sixth generation Saburoemon. Saburoemon, said to be the founder of the Kawashima family's revival, was allowed to succeed his father Tokubei in 1808, and was appointed a silver mine official with 30 bales of cut rice and three people to support. In 1810, he was appointed to the position of Yamakata-gake, and eventually worked his way up to the head of the group, before passing away in 1858. Furthermore, it appears that documents related to a foreign ship that washed ashore at Oura Minato (Isotake-cho, Ota City) in 1857 were found in the underlayment of the fittings used in the main house. At this time, Saburoemon seems to have transported foreigners who had drifted ashore to Nagasaki. The symbol of the temple, the large ginkgo tree, is really large. The timing is perfect, and the yellow leaves create an indescribable magnificence. It was lit up in the evening, and it was a great collaboration with the beauty of the temple. Tomogaura Port is a wonderful place that offers hands-on history learning. Together with Okidomari in Onsentsu, it served as a silver shipping port and played a crucial role in the infrastructure development of Iwami. The port was a gateway for distributing silver from the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine via the sea. It is connected to Kotogahama by the Tomo Tunnel and has historical significance dating back to the 16th century.

(Translated by Google) Tomogaura Port served as a gateway for silver produced from the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine to be distributed via the sea via the Tomogaura Highway. Lately, my hobby has been watching history videos on YouTube, but up until the end of the Edo period, Japan produced gold and silver. When Japan opened its doors to the world at the end of the Edo period, the value of gold compared to silver was lower than that of other countries by the standards of the great powers at the time, so inferior foreign silver was imported and Japanese gold was exported. . It can be assumed that this was a huge loss under the gold standard system. Furthermore, as inferior foreign silver entered the country, it is assumed that the cost benefits of silver mine production were not calculated and the industry rapidly declined. It was a quiet port that reminded us of the current situation where Japan is becoming increasingly poor due to the import of overseas energy resources at cheap yen prices. When I was a student, I was taught the history of modern Japan, especially from the end of the Edo period, and I had no interest in it at all, but I wish they would teach me about more important things first.

(Translated by Google) Although it is the shortest distance from the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, I visited to find out why Onsentsu, which is further away, gave up its dominance as a silver shipping port. What I felt was that the limits of its capacity and functionality as a port were probably too low. Tomokan is a satellite facility of Iwami Ginzan, and although it is probably not a place that many people visit, the inside of the building is kept to a certain extent, and the people who manage and maintain it are very grateful.

(Translated by Google) This was my first time going to Arifuku Onsen, and it was a very good hot spring that lived up to its reputation. When I got out of the parking lot and went up the stairs, there was a hand bath. The temperature of Arifuku Onsen, which flows from above and is the first to touch it, is warm and pleasant to the touch. I thought I had high hopes for this, so I headed to Gozenyu. There is an old guard stand and a good atmosphere! I paid 400 yen for the bath. There was one large bathtub, and when I entered, I was surprised at how deep the water was. Short people and small children will drown if they are not careful. You can experience and enjoy the melting sensation of hot water in just a few minutes. It had a beautiful skin effect! The source water was a high 47 degrees, and it seemed like they were adding water to lower the temperature, but the water was about 42 degrees, so in any case, it was a little high and I felt like I would get hot if I soaked in it for a long time, but the quality of the spring water is great and it feels great. . The hot springs were so good that I wanted to stay at one of the many hotels next time instead of dropping by.
