Varkala Beach, also known as Papanasham Beach, is a unique and picturesque destination located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It is renowned for its stunning cliffs and natural springs that are believed to have purifying properties. Often compared to Goa, this coastal town offers a blend of beach relaxation, wellness experiences, and cultural attractions such as the Janardhana Swamy Temple and Varkala Cultural Centre.
Varkala Beach is one amongst the most unique Beaches in Southern part of India. It has dramatic red laterite cliffs, in itself is a unique geological formation. The views from cliff are Stunning. It's also known for its lively atmosphere with many cafes and restaurants located along the cliff, catering to visitors. After sunset, it's possible to witness bioluminescence, an aquamarine glow in the water, making for a magical experience. Also you can easily spot Eagles & Fireflies flying, depending upon the period of your visit. Except for being so beautiful, swimming on the Beach is not always safe due to strong currents, so visitors are advised to be cautious. PS:-In all Good place to relax and unwind. Highly recommended.

Certainly one of the best beach, having a great cliff connecting through another beach and having all restaurants/cafés and shops over the cliff. Must recommend the morning walk through the cliff and have a great sight during sunrise. For party ppl Evening time is great fun.
Ravi U — Google review
It is a beautiful beach. It has got peace and calm ambience. Where you can sit peacefully, and you can listen, the sounds of the waves. moreover, you will be having less crowd and compatible with Cherai and Cochin Beach. I have been there along with my family enjoyed a lot that too during night time it was very pleasant to hear the song. It is one of the decent features I have ever seen.
Mjsandeep K — Google review
One of the best beaches in Kerala..easily accessible from Trivandrum and Kollam.. it’s best to visit here on evening to enjoy the beautiful sunset..weekends will be very crowded

There are options for relaxation, adventure, wellness, and cultural experiences, making Varkala a versatile destination for all types of travelers
Nishin P — Google review
The Varkala Beach does not allow people to bathe in the water. The beach is always crowded but it very closely to the stays. The beach is in walking distance of 3 to 5 KM only. It is the most unique Beaches in Southern part of India. The views from cliff is Stunning. It is well known for its lively atmosphere with many cafes and restaurants along the cliff, catering to visitors. After sunset, it's possible to witness bioluminescence, an aquamarine glow in the water, making for a magical experience. Swimming is not always not safe due to strong currents, so visitors are advised to be cautious and not allowed during season time. It's Good place to relax and unwind. But the food is costly and I don't highly recommend.
Lava K — Google review
Varkala Beach is quite overrated and usually very crowded. Most of the time, access to the beach was restricted, so we could only watch the sunset. However, the sunset view itself is truly mesmerizing. The beach is easily accessible, with plenty of buses running on this route from the railway station. There are also several nearby beaches that are less crowded and have fresher water.

This place was pretty much empty when v visited. There was not much directions available on how to reach but it was walkable through steps from the bottom to the top. Parking space is available. Evening is the best time to visit and the place is very silent as well.

The Samadhi Sthalam (final resting place/tomb) of Sree Narayana Guru. Here, there is a spiritually dense atmosphere. Sivagiri is a place where one can come peacefully, sit for a while, and understand and learn many things.

Was fortunate to visit Mutt. Three year long global observance honouring the life, teaching and enduring legacy of great philosopher and social reformer who reshaped Kerala’s spiritual and social landscape. Embodiment of all virtues and values Sree Narayana Guru's preaching of one caste, one religion and one God for humanity has great relevance today. Devotees are chanting mantras enriching the teachings of Guru. Centenary observance of Guru Maha Samathi being jointly organised by Mutt, Government of India and Government of Kerala inagurated by President of India.

Peaceful and spiritually uplifting place 🙏. Sivagiri Mutt carries deep historical and cultural significance as the resting place of Sree Narayana Guru. I recently visited this temple and had a wonderful experience. The atmosphere here is truly special there’s a peaceful, spiritual vibe that makes you feel instantly calm and welcome. The temple is impressively neat and clean, with well maintained surroundings that add to the sense of serenity. The staff and volunteers are very friendly and always ready to help or guide visitors, which made my visit even more pleasant. The temple’s architecture and overall ambiance beautifully reflect its ancient heritage, giving you a sense of connection to history and tradition. Overall, it’s a fantastic place for anyone seeking tranquility and a touch of spiritual energy. Highly recommended for both devotees and tourists alike!

One of the divine and nearest temple in varkala. Also 2000years old. At the temple entrance, small pond is available. The water is refreshing, & even spotted a little turtle. The temple was neat, clean, and maintained with care. While it looked like many other traditional temples as well. It was quite hot during my visit, For Gents - The shirts and inner baniyan to be removed due to temple customs. The god looked unique from others. It was an pleasant moment but it stayed out for more than half an hour because of prasadham offering for the god.
Lava K — Google review
A peaceful and spiritual place with centuries of history. The architecture is traditional and well-maintained. The temple is located on a hilltop, offering a serene atmosphere and beautiful views. It’s very calm inside, and devotees come here to seek blessings from Lord Vishnu.

Incredible ❤️😍. So different from other temples and so beautiful. A must visit of Varkala. Some of highlights - - Vishnu Ji Murti is so beautiful and different - the number of diyas lit in the evening are just amazing - and to top it up there is Gajraj ji (elephant) in the temple complex 😍. Few tips - Try to go in night around 6:30 as diyas are lit that time , you can also help in that - In Mandir main compex you have to remove the shirt /tshirt
Hanendra S — Google review
We recently visited this temple and had a very peaceful experience. There’s also a pond near the temple, which adds to the calm and serene atmosphere. One important thing to note is that boys need to remove their shirts during darshan, as it’s a mandatory tradition here.
Jayanth C — Google review
Before entering the temple, I spent a few quiet moments at the temple pond right in front of the entrance. The water felt refreshing, and I even spotted a little turtle,it was such a calming start to the visit. The temple itself was neat, clean, and maintained with care. While it looked like many other traditional temples, there was a special peaceful vibe that I really felt. It was quite hot during my visit, and I was wearing a hat. A lady told me to remove it,possibly due to temple customs.
Devapriya — Google review
NO STARS! Although the temple space is beautiful I could not enjoy it because I could not get over the animal torture that is going on here! They are holding an innocent elephant captive! She is 52 years old and suffering. 😭😭

Absolutely Must-Visit! The Enthusiast (Best for high energy & overall experience) Kerala's Hidden Gem Varkala Cliff is a truly magical and unique place. The dramatic red cliffs overlooking the Arabian Sea are an incredible sight, especially at sunset-it's one of the best I've ever seen! The atmosphere is a perfect blend of relaxed beach town and lively market. Don't Miss: Walking the North Cliff promenade, checking out the eclectic shops, and grabbing fresh seafood or a smoothie bowl at one of the countless cafes. It definitely has a cleaner, more tranquil "mini Goa" vibe. Highly recommended for travelers and photographers!
Shadab A — Google review
The place boasts a beautiful view, especially during the evening. While it has plenty of shops, boutiques, and restaurants, the prices are quite high, making it more suited for tourists than locals. Sundays can be crowded with a local rush, so plan your visit wisely.

Edava Beach Varkala, situated in the Edava village of Thiruvananthapuram District in Kerala, is a hidden gem attracting tourists with its serene backwaters and lush green surroundings. The beach is best visited during the monsoon season when the lagoon water meets the Arabian Sea. Known for its untouched beauty, it offers a stunning view of the sea and parallel backwaters. Visitors can enjoy fresh seafood and experience tranquility by visiting early in the morning or late afternoon.
Edava Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Varkala. Unlike Varkala Beach, which is often crowded, Edava Beach is calm and peaceful, making it a perfect spot to relax, especially in the mornings and evenings with family and friends. Though it’s a small beach, it has a distinct Goan vibe. The waves are mesmerizing, and watching the sunset from here is a truly wonderful experience. The beach is well-maintained with minimal waste, so I encourage visitors to keep it clean and tidy. This beach is especially popular among foreigners, and there are many homestays and resorts nearby, making it a great place for a peaceful getaway.

Its so good to watch evening sea, sun settling down, warmth of the sun along with cool touch of sea breeze, its so soothing. Shore was calm, not so busy. it was worth the ride.view of the sea from cliff is so satisfying.
Ajolin R — Google review
Edava Beach is a tranquil and less crowded alternative to Varkala’s main beaches. The calm waters and scenic surroundings make it perfect for a peaceful day by the sea. The beach offers a relaxed atmosphere with beautiful sunsets. Facilities are limited, so it's best for those looking for a quiet escape.
Vimal K — Google review
Good beach with nice cafes, but it way too crowded.
Ganesh P — Google review
View from the cliff is breathtaking!! Though the beach area itself is quite small. A narrow way of 100-200mtr leads to the beach. There is a cafe right on the seaside - Bait and Hook - felt the pricing on a higher side. since it’s the only cafe there. The water is clean and the area is not crowded at all. There are 3 resorts that I could see on the seaside - B’Canti, Ashokam, Sukriti home stay. All of them appeared nice from outside.

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Nestled between Black Beach and Odayam Beach, Varkala Aquarium is a captivating destination for marine enthusiasts. The three-story building offers stunning views of the sea and beach, making it a popular spot for families with kids. Visitors can marvel at the diverse aquatic life showcased in large water tanks, featuring exotic species such as scorpionfish, angelfish, koi, and local karimeen.
Visited the aquarium near Black Sand Beach and had a great experience. In addition to the wide variety of fish on display, the aquarium offers beautiful views of the surrounding area. It's well-maintained, and the entry ticket is quite affordable. There wasn’t much of a crowd, which made the visit even more enjoyable. A peaceful and educational stop worth visiting if you're in the area.
Nitish C — Google review
It has a very good infrastructure for a state of the art aquarium. But it looks like the place is running short of funds for maintenance. Mostly common fish species which could be found in a regular aquarium shop in town with a very few rare species. And many empty tanks which again reflect upon my guess on funds earlier. Entry fee is nominal and ample space for car parking. There is an attached kids play area which is quite big and has an amphitheatre kind of arrangement. Kids will love the play area. The play area is adjacent to the beach but is securely isolated. Felt safe to let the kids be on their own here. Hope the aquarium gets the required attention from the state to draw more crowds in the near future.
Jensen S — Google review
Entry fees Rs 30 for adults and Rs 15 for kids. Free for kids upto 5 years of age. The 3D theatre was closed when we visited. The children's park can be availed at Rs 10 per head. Overall a good experience for kids. Lots of fish and the mud crab on display with beautiful views and the acquarium overlooking the beach.
Sudipto B — Google review
With limited experience this place offers, yet there are some surprise elements like jelly fish, turtle in this aquarium. There is a lot of scope to improve for a better experience. It is near to black sand beach and there are ticket charges of Rs.30 per head.
Selvamanojkumar S — Google review
Varkala Aquarium is manged by Kerala Fisheries department . This building is built in a spiral structure with three floors. It holds only few fishes in aquarium. My suggestion is to add more fishes so that it will be more interests to see. Ticket charge is just 30/- per head The park behind this aquarium is so nice and we can enjoy the beauty of Thiruvambady beach. This aquarium is not a must go place in Varkala and you can choose this place to spend few time here.
Josmy J — Google review
This was one of the attraction spot before in Varkala which is located near the black sand beach. I have visited it recently after couple of years. However the condition is very pathetic. Not properly maintained. Most of the fish tanks were empty. However the the place is located in place with scenic beauty and greenary around.. request the concerned officials to kindly take of this place since lots of tourist come to Varkala every day. They collect a very nominal fees with enough parking space available.
Meera B — Google review
The aquarium is not that great. So many species of fish were missing from the tank. But the play area outside was lovely. My kid had loads of fun playing in the swing, etc. Great place for kids. Also, there's an entry ticket for the aquarium. Overall, it was a good experience.
Shifa A — Google review
This place needs much improvement .It was hard to find the entrance looking at the google map.It is close to black beach Varkala. I loved the way it constructed. There’s a garden next to sea with kids playing area. Will give good view during sunset. The aquarium experience was somewhat underwhelming as it lacked a variety of impressive fishes.Very few exotic species, majority are common species. Too much reflection, difficult to see or take photos during day time. The place doesn't have a very large variety of fishes, but is a pleasant and calm place to visit and spend sometime there. The place could be so much better if it was only maintained better, especially since it's next to the sea you'd expect to see some stunning marine life. So many tanks and mini pools, just empty. Some with just one fish per tank, all in all just disappointing. Don't go in with a lot of expectations.

This place might have a historic importance besides, the way this place is being treated is pathetic. Wished this place should have existed some where else in the globe leaving behind the scope to be a heritage place. This site is venue for garbage disposal and hub for anti socials courtesy Varkala Municipality . I never recommend people to climb down to have a look at this place as it is being used as a place for public lavatories by the locals.

Place of historical importance. The Tunnel was used for long distance goods transportation since 18th-19th century. But now this place is abandoned and government not giving any protection to this cultural monument.

This is one of the historic spot in Sivagiri Hills. The tunnel was constructed in 19th century It was a major water transportation from Trivandrum to Malabar region. It is a tourist highlight in the vicinity. Varkala tunnel was constructed on the mid of 1860s. It is built under a huge rock. The tunnel comprises two passages, namely, Sivagiri passage and Chilakkoor passage. The first one is 722 meter long and the other is 350 m. It was a part of Travancore State Canal, a major inland waterway of the early 20th centuries. Now it is the part of the larger Kovalam-Kollam-Kottappuram-Kasaragod inland waterway project. The canal was used to transport of men and material from Thiruvananthapuram to Kollam. Of late, the tunnel came to disrepair and it got blocked due to falling debris and earth. Fairly average beach, the black sand is the attraction, but gets crowded easily as people occupy the best spots for long photo shoots. Its right next to varkala cliff on the north side, not very aesthetic buildngs nearby. Overall decent.

The odayam beach, Beautiful, calm and less crowded beach. Sit near palm heritage resort and enjoy the sunset. which makes it even more relaxing.

I visited in October which is at the start of the season and you experience more aggressive rides than December to January. I ecommend coming here instead of Varkala. Much more sheltered which allows for swimming and wading during high tide. The beach is busy all times of day including night. Local surf schools also do their lessons down here.

Pravin R — Google review
One of the best beaches in Varkala. If you're someone who doesn't prefer crowds, this is the perfect spot. This beach is an offbeat spot, but there are some hotels and restaurants that are situated just to the shore of the beach and have a great vibe. The location is a little distance from the main beach (Cliff). Also great for having a small bath because most of the time I visited, there were fewer waves and the beach was not that aggressive...

The Varkala Janardhanaswamy Temple Pond, also known as the Varkala Temple, is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is believed to have been built around 2000 years ago and has a rich history mentioned in the Vedas. The deity Lord Vishnu is worshipped as Janardhanaswamy, and the temple hosts an annual festival between March and April.
A vast pond in left side of the Janardan Sway Temple. A stream always flows from the temple side to the pond. Water is almost clean. I took bath there last year. It was a wonderful experience. While swimming I felt it more difficult than in a river. There are lot of fish in it. I forget to offer food to the fish.

If you are going from this direction towards the beach then this will be the first attraction. The pond has its own beauty which you can see in the pictures. There are small shops near the temple close to the pond, where buy towels starting from Rs.40.

Varkala Temple Pond This beautiful temple pond is located in the heart of Varkala town in Kerala, India. It is near the famous Janardhana Temple in Varkala. It is also known as Chakra Theertha A stream from hill where the Janardhana Temple is located feeds the pond perennially. This stream is lead into the pond by way of solid granite stone drain with carvings called as Kalpathy. The water falls into the pond from a height of about 10 meters. This stream spout is now enclosed in an enclosure to preserve it from damage. The water is supposed to be having medicinal values and healing property. The entire perimeter of the pond was renovated with granite stone retaining walls to preserve the pond in good condition. Steps and banks were made for people to have bath in the pond. The renovation is said to have costed about 80 lakhs of Indian rupees. Water is clean. There are a number of fishes in the pond and people do fishing as well as feed the fish. It is a very peaceful place to sit and enjoy the serenity of the water body. It is a soothing sight to the eyes. Photos by Viswas Menon ©Viswas Menon

Groundwater from the nearby small pond is constantly falling into this pond. Bathing under the stone fountain before the water fell into the pool is a special feeling .You will not find such an experience anywhere else. Quality of the water is very good because of the continuous flow of ground water. For those who don't know swimming, it's best not to go away from the steps. Very dangerous. There are plenty of fish in this pond. Feeding the fish is an important ritual. This pond situated in a very vast area. Just below the famous Varkala Janardana Swamy Temple. Superb.

The Varkala Cultural Center, located near the north Cliff, offers a chance to immerse yourself in Kerala's rich cultural heritage. The center showcases artifacts from Varkala's past and hosts traditional Kathakali dance performances. Visitors highly recommend attending the one-hour show, praising the beautiful makeup and costumes. The performance features strong abhinaya expressing various emotions and is accompanied by recorded music. Despite its modest setting, the intimate theater provides a great experience with skilled and personable performers.
Intimate theatre and a great show. Loved the experience. I recommend watching the makeup process that starts at 5pm. Show starts at 6:45pm. The artists are real and very personable. They are usually passing out the flyers themselves - don’t discount them, because they are awesome!

A real treat! I highly recommend attending the one hour performance. Beautiful makeup and dress (which you can watch for the hour before the show starts). Very enjoyable performance, especially the demoness who did an amazing job and was quite frightening. Strong abhinaya expressing love, desire, hatred etc. The music is recorded but it's ridiculous to expect live music for the modest ticket price. Go! Enjoy! Support local artists!
Anita M — Google review
The costumes and make up are really great but they absolutely need to put live drummers because now they use a very low quality speaker connected to a phone and it's quite ridiculous and annoying...also the show is quite boring a part from the guy acting the demon he's great, a bit more energy would be good. High price for what you get to see and location.

This stunning beach is renowned for its unique black sand, which sets it apart from typical coastal destinations. Surrounded by lush coconut groves, it's an ideal spot for picnics and relaxation.
This is also black sand beach, adjacent to North Cliff. Nearly 10 minutes walk from the North Cliff.. near Varkala aquarium.. The beach towards Edava is more clean.. Beach is very clean and sand is in black colour due to some mineral.. Less crowded.. clean water.. Perfect in the morning time..we spent 2 hours ..we enjoyed lot.. Must try when you are in Varkala..

Darjeeling Cafe in Varkala is a vibrant and popular vegetarian restaurant located on the cliff, offering stunning views of the ocean. It has a cozy coffee shop ambiance and is a favorite spot for breakfast among travelers. The cafe's chic decor with giant dreamcatchers and candlelit tables makes it perfect for Instagram-worthy pictures. Visitors can be seen enjoying fresh fruit juices and smoothie bowls after their yoga sessions.
The cafe has the right vibe to pull the crowd! Food was good and service was nice! They had live music which was a nice experience! There's usually good rush so you may have to wait for a few minutes to get a table... Otherwise it was a nice place.. food is on expensive side though!

Nice restaurant with beautiful views of the beach and a decent variety of vegetarian options. The food was delicious - kids especially enjoyed the burgers, and the momos were a good choice for the order. Great spot to relax and enjoy a good meal by the sea!
Sandeep K — Google review
Amazing location on the cliff, good spot to have a nice time during the sunset and at night, just a bit hot to hang around if there's no fan. The food was decent and good, the gin and tonic cocktail was really good. The best was the "Watermelon mint cooler". They had live music going on which had vibe going. All in all good experience, will be back for more juice haha.

So we went for lunch at Darjeeling Cafe. We ordered the famous momos, fried rice, butter chicken, and butter naan . Fried rice, butter, chicken was the only thing that was decent. The momos tasted so bad plus for the amount of money we are giving, It was not worth at all and the fried rice also was very cold. So if you want to skip Darjeeling Cafe, it totally fine because you won’t be missing anything except for the view and view you can get it from some other cafes in the same spot, but the ambience is nice. You have like a direct view from the cliff to the beach to the sea, so it is pretty good, except for the View there is nothing which Darjeeling Cafe offers, so yeah, just feel happy to skip it

Mixed Experience at Darjeeling Cafe! Darjeeling Cafe in Varkala has a great location and ambiance, but the food fell short of expectations. The staff was decent, but not particularly impressive. Highlights: 1. Great Location: The cafe's location offers stunning views. 2. Ambiance: The atmosphere is cozy and relaxing. Areas for Improvement: 1. Food Quality The food was not up to the mark. 2. Staff Service: The staff seemed a bit indifferent. Darjeeling Cafe has potential, but needs to work on its food and service. Quality Control: Implement quality control measures to ensure consistency.

The restaurant offers a beautiful view and serves high-quality food—especially the seafood basket, which was absolutely delicious. However, the overall experience was disappointing due to poor service. Orders took an unusually long time to arrive, and the staff lacked warmth and hospitality. Additionally, the washroom facilities were in very bad condition, which made it particularly uncomfortable for the ladies in our group. For a place that seems to pride itself on ambiance and food, the lack of basic cleanliness and customer service is a major letdown. Would recommend for the food, but only if you're willing to overlook the rest.
Rajesh N — Google review
I wish I could add more stars! The food, service and atmosphere deserve at least 8 stars. The menu is very intensive, pizza, pasta, seafood and Indian. I had molly fish with rice and steamed veggies. The veg was cooked to perfection and the fish rapped in banana leaf was a large serve and incredibly tasty. I sat on the balcony overlooking the ocean and sipped my long island iced tea. I'll come back tomorrow earlier to eat and watch the sunset. Now to go down stairs for some ice cream at bad manors cafe. Yum!

Honestly, shittiest service BY far i the area, took over half hour for menu (that too with us Hunting down the staff) OVER 2 Hours to complete the order (3-4 dishes). When it finally did arrive, it was so so only OTHER THAN THE VIEW, everything else was 2/5 the chicken biryani and paneer gravy wer the exception tough, they were good. Sadly the same can't be said about noodles or the famous banana leaf fish.

I recently visited the Black Sand Beach 🏖 near Varkala railway station. The beach is famous for its unique black sand ⬛✨… and honestly, seeing it for the first time felt special. Evening time 🌅 is the best to be here… the sunset glow makes the whole place come alive. 🚗🛵 Parking is a bit of a struggle, especially on weekends when the crowd gets heavy. First impression… yes, good ✅ But then, a little disappointed 😕 The place is not maintained properly. The beach is small, and with too many people, it feels crowded 👫👬👭 Still… the beauty is there 🌊 Bathing is allowed 🚿 and many enjoy playing in the water. For me, just sitting quietly and watching the waves 🌊☀️ was enough. The sunset was the highlight 💛 At night 🌙… the vibe is different. A solo walk 🚶 felt peaceful but also a little risky ⚠️—better to stay alert as thefts can happen. Overall… it was a new and happy experience 😍. Not perfect, but memorable in its own way. The black sand, the sunset, the vibe—it all made the visit worth it. 🌌

Varkala Bali Mandapam, located in Kerala, is a significant religious site where both locals and tourists gather to pay their respects. This imposing structure provides an opportunity to witness the unique traditions of South India. Situated near the sea, it also allows devotees to perform Hindu last rites for departed souls while strictly adhering to customs. Managed by the Devasom board, trained priests assist visitors in conducting these ceremonies.
"This is a suitable place for performing Pithru Tharpanam and Bali Tharpanam. The surroundings are very clean and well-maintained. The rituals are conducted under proper guidance, in a manner that brings peace of mind. The method of offering is truly fulfilling and satisfying. Highly recommend Devasam Board Balitharpana Mandapam only.....
Renju — Google review
Varkala Bali Mandapam Hindus offer “bali” (a ritual or offering for deceased relatives) after the death of a near one. Usually the sons offer the “bali” for their parents. If sons are not there, any close relative can perform this on their behalf. “Bali” is usually performed on all days after death till the 16th day, on the 41st day after death and on all death anniversaries. Since it is not easy to do such rituals at home, people go to places like Varkala or Thiruvallom Parasurama Temple in Trivandrum. Varkala has a special “Bali Mandapom” or platform to perform bali. This mandapom is open on all days of the year. Rituals can be performed from 6.00 AM to 11.00 AM. Priests are available to guide the devotees. All the required items like cooked rice, flowers etc., would be supplied there on payment of the required fee.

Victor B — Google review
Avoid this tailor! I had a very negative experience, which I’ve outlined below. I would never recommend them to anyone, especially women, due to the aggression and intimidation I experienced from the sales assistant. I took a skirt and top I had made in Vietnam (which was perfect after the first fitting) and asked if they could replicate it with minor changes: a shorter skirt and spaghetti straps instead of cap sleeves. I mentioned I was leaving Thursday evening and asked about timing for the first fitting. He told me to come in Thursday morning, with the whole day for adjustments, and said he'd contact me on WhatsApp. By Thursday morning, I hadn’t heard from him, so I messaged to confirm a time. He replied with 4pm, leaving little room for alterations. When I arrived, he claimed he’d always said late afternoon, which was untrue – I would never have ordered if I’d known. When I arrived just before 4pm, the top was ready, but the skirt was only half done. After a 15-minute wait, they asked me to try them on. The top fit poorly: loose at the top, tight around the chest, loose under the bust and mid stomach, and tight at the bottom, causing the fabric to bunch. The zip only went up a third of the side, so the top couldn’t be pulled on properly. Neither the tailor nor the sales assistant offered any advice on how to fix the fit – it was all left to me. The skirt, which was meant to skim the hips and be floaty from mid-thigh, was made with a wide A-line shape. They used ‘hidden’ elastic in the waistband, which was rolling and bunching. They said they would need to stitch over it with three lines, making the elastic visible, which was far from what we’d agreed upon. The owner then became hostile, blaming me for choosing this fabric. I explained I’m not a tailor and it's not my responsibility to know how each fabric works. I selected the fabric, showed examples, and they assured me they could make the pieces. I trusted their word. Given the poor fit, their refusal to meet our original agreement, and the hostility I faced, I decided to leave without the piece and further alterations, as my flight was just hours away. In response, the sales assistant became aggressive, shouting and making me feel unsafe. He accused me of wasting his time and money, which was never my intention. I am a genuine customer who spent time choosing the fabric, consulting with friends, and investing in this order. If a taxi dropped you off in the wrong location, you wouldn’t pay for it, even if they used fuel – the agreed service wasn’t delivered. This was the same: they failed to deliver what we had agreed. I’m glad I had a friend with me, as otherwise, I would have felt even more unsafe. I’m sure the sales assistant will dispute this account, but this is a fully factual retelling. I wanted to share my experience so others can make an informed decision before visiting this tailor.

I had a dress copied and one from a picture tailored at this little gem of an establishment. Dobe exactly to my specifications. Thrilled with the result. Quick turn around. Great fabrics to choose from.

I had a wonderful experience getting a shirt tailored at Asparagus. Aji kindly accommodated me and arranged for the garment to be finished before I left Varkala, including alterations, and was very patient while going through the design process. The shop has an amazing range of fabrics to choose from, the garments are high quality, and overall is exceptionally good value. I highly recommend Asparagus for tailoring while in Varkala.

A wonderful tiny fabric shop with wonderful tailors. The manager is very patient and the work of the tailors amazing. They copy 1 to 1 your favourite cloth or design what ever you like. Their fabric is really special. I ordered a lot and I am very happy with all the pretty pieces. Highly recommended!!
Jule L — Google review
Asparagus is a cut above the tailoring shops dotted all over Kerala. The fabrics are beautiful and sourced locally. They are some, lovely organic cottons. The tailor who works next door is a real artist and there is a lot of emphasis on giving you a perfectly finished garment. There are templates to choose from or you could bring a garment of your own that you want copied. The prices are very good and while you might find cheaper you will not find better.
Anne C — Google review
One of the highlights of our trip to Varkala. This shop has the loveliest fabrics, and the people who work there make it special. The tailor made clothes are made with such expertise and care. I am very greatful to them for having made us the most wonderful clothes!
Julia R — Google review
I went there a couple of times and got made a pair of shorts, trousers and long sleeve shirt! Their is so much choice, and the fabric is beautiful. Is it nice to get something personal instead of all the clothes sold on the cliff. Make sure to have a precise idea of what you want, or have a model at hand.

Worse yoga experience in my life - I absolutely recommend not to come. Very unprofessional teacher and manager and extremely dirty place. - It was hata yoga but we booked Nidra. Manger tried to play us as stupid. - The yoga teacher was listening to voice messages while we were in shavasana. - The place was very dirty, and they gave us disgusting yoga matts. - Price was double compared to other places. As a yoga teacher myself I feel bad writing such a review but you deserve a beautiful yoga experience and not to feel scammed in soulful Varkala. There are many other beautiful and inspiring yoga centers and teachers here. Namaste

Varkala Cliff is a stunning natural wonder that showcases unique red sandstone formations along the Arabian Sea. Stretching from Black Beach to Papanasam Beach, this picturesque cliff is not just about breathtaking views; it’s also home to a vibrant market filled with restaurants, cafes, and boutiques offering traditional South Indian attire and souvenirs. The atmosphere here is lively, making it hard to leave once you’ve indulged in delicious vegetarian dishes or fresh seafood.
One of the best tourist attractions of south india and the one which you get never bored of. Excellent views. Lots of food spots in the cliff and watchout for the prices though. Highly recommended especially during monsoon.
Rajeev R — Google review
Varkala Cliff has such a calming vibe 🌊✨ The moody weather, cool winds, and light rain made the place feel even more magical. Sitting by the cliff, watching the waves crash and the clouds move — it’s pure peace. A perfect spot to slow down and just breathe.
Prajeesh — Google review
Varkala Cliff is one of the most beautiful and relaxing places you can visit in Kerala. The view from the cliff is absolutely stunning — the Arabian Sea stretches endlessly, and watching the sunset from the edge of the cliff is a magical experience. The whole area has a calm, laid-back vibe that makes it perfect for unwinding and spending time close to nature. The cliff is lined with cafes, restaurants, and small shops, offering everything from fresh seafood to continental dishes and souvenirs. You can walk along the stretch, stop for a coffee or a meal with a sea view, and enjoy the cool breeze throughout the day. It’s also quite safe and well-maintained, with easy access to the beach below through steps. The combination of beach, food, and beautiful views makes it a must-visit spot for tourists, couples, and backpackers alike. Overall, Varkala Cliff is a perfect destination if you love scenic views, good food, and a peaceful atmosphere. Whether you visit for a day or stay nearby, it’s an experience you’ll definitely remember!
Naresh D — Google review
Varkala Cliff is an amazing place to unwind and enjoy nature at its best. The view of the Arabian Sea from the cliff is absolutely breathtaking, especially during sunset. The entire stretch is vibrant with cafés, restaurants, and shops, yet it still feels peaceful and relaxing. The walk along the cliffside is refreshing, with cool sea breeze and stunning scenery all around. Whether you’re there for food, shopping, or just to sit and watch the waves, Varkala Cliff offers a wonderful experience. A must-visit spot
Dileep D — Google review
One of the most beautiful coastal spots in Kerala and truly a must-visit place for anyone who loves the sea. The view from the cliff is absolutely stunning — endless blue waters, golden sunsets, and the sound of waves crashing below. The cliffside path is lined with cozy cafés, restaurants, and small shops selling souvenirs, clothes, and handicrafts, which make it a lively and relaxing place to spend your day. Evenings are especially magical here — the entire place lights up with a calm, breezy vibe. You can sit at a café, enjoy a cup of coffee or seafood meal, and just watch the sun slowly dip into the Arabian Sea. It’s peaceful yet full of life. However, during high tides, parts of the beach below get washed away, and access can be limited. The lifeguards are always alert and guide tourists well, ensuring safety for everyone. The cliff area is also well-maintained and has several homestays and resorts with sea-view rooms. It’s an ideal place for solo travelers, couples, and photographers.
DHANUSH M — Google review
Varkala is truly a hidden gem on the coast of Kerala — a perfect blend of natural beauty, peace, and good vibes. The beach, with its golden sands and turquoise waters, is framed by the stunning red cliffs that make the place absolutely unique. Watching the sunset from the cliff is an experience you’ll never forget — the sky turns into shades of orange, pink, and purple that look straight out of a painting. What makes Varkala even more special are its people. Everyone I met — from the local shop owners to the café staff and even the fishermen — was warm, welcoming, and full of smiles. They genuinely make you feel at home and add so much heart to the whole experience. The cliffside cafés and small shops create a relaxed, bohemian vibe — perfect for travelers, backpackers, and anyone looking to slow down and reconnect with nature. Whether you want yoga, fresh seafood, Ayurvedic massages, or just a quiet moment by the sea, Varkala offers it all. Varkala is not just a place — it’s a feeling. The cliffs, the waves, and the people together make it one of the most soulful destinations in India. Highly recommended for anyone looking for peace, beauty, and kindness.
Fakru F — Google review
Varkala Cliff is one of the best places I’ve visited. The views are insane, the vibe is calm, and the cliffside cafés make the whole experience great. Perfect for a relaxed walk or just chilling by the sea. The best time to visit is definitely evening and night when the place feels the most alive.
Bibin P — Google review
LOVE THE PLACE. I love visiting this place every now and then—the whole place issa vibe. Everything you need is on the cliff, from food to clothes to antiques, you name it. I bought a bunch of antique stuff on my last visit. There are honestly so many shops selling antiques, jewellery, clothes, and all kinds of random things. But here’s a tip: don’t jump at the first price they tell you. You can usually bargain and get things for a much better deal. Also, the same item might be in a bunch of different shops, so take a walk around before buying anything. There are so many—literally so many—cafés and restaurants up there. But don’t just go with the Instagram hype. Do a bit of research or explore on your own, because there are a lot of great spots apart from the usual “Instagram-approved” places. A coffee while taking in a glimpse of the beach, or sipping a cocktail with the sea view, is a must if you ask me. The views from the cliff are just stunning, especially during sunset when the sky goes crazy with colours. It does get crowded in the eve. People chilling, music playing from cafés, and the sea breeze it all feels perfect. If you’re in Varkala, the cliff is definitely a must-visit.

InDa Cafe is a popular spot in Varkala Town, known for its chill and cozy atmosphere. This cafe offers a variety of cuisines including Italian, European, and healthy options. It's a great place to enjoy hot and cold coffees, teas, smoothies, as well as breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. Whether you're looking for a relaxing coffee break or a satisfying meal with vegetarian options, InDa Cafe has something for everyone.
Visited India Cafe for breakfast and had a truly enjoyable experience. The ambience is warm, stylish, and relaxing, making it a perfect spot to unwind in the morning. The breakfast menu is extensive, offering a wide range of choices to suit different palates. The food was fresh, delicious, and well-presented. One standout feature is their unlimited coffee and tea, which adds fantastic value and keeps the conversations flowing. The staff were polite and courteous, providing attentive service without being intrusive – something that really elevated the overall experience. The only small letdown was the Eggs Benedict, which could’ve had a runnier yolk for that perfect classic touch. All in all, a great breakfast experience. Would definitely recommend for a relaxed morning meal with quality food and service.

Really nice food from here, they do a vegan pizza which is great for us as my husband is vegan. I had the vegetarian mushroom Alfredo and chocolate brownie (more of a cake, but still delicious). Only taking away a star because my food came out quick (which is great), but my husband’s was around 10 minutes after mine. Would’ve been nicer to eat at the same time, but apart from that, perfect! Ice cream was especially delicious
Lucy D — Google review
The food was very good, and the staff were friendly. However, it took nearly an hour to prepare our order, so plan your visit accordingly. Other than that, everything was great! Consider booking your table in advance to avoid any wait.

Visited the cafe for dinner and had an amazing experience. The ambience is very good. The food is really great and had the best pizza here during Varkala trip. All items including drinks were top notch. The highlight of the visit was the amazing hosts who tried their best to accommodate every single guest despite the rush. Please book the table in advance since this place generally has waiting during peak hours.

One of the most cozy cafes that we had been to in Varkala, the coffees can be much better, didn't like much of it, but the food was really Delicious, the breakfast combos. The ambience of the place is really nice and also the place really clean and hyegenic with aesthetic views for an *Instagrammable* place.

Definitely worth a visit. Great menu, tasty food and good service. We had hummus and the vegan pizza and were very happy. Will definitely be back and try the breakfast menu.
Braggles — Google review
We visited this café after hearing many recommendations, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. We ordered the paneer steak, hot chocolate, fettuccine in pesto sauce, and chocolate peanut mousse — each dish was cooked to perfection. The service was excellent, timely, and courteous. The ambiance is warm and cozy, and since it rained during our visit, it made the experience even more special. A must visit spot if you’re on the North Cliff and looking for a comfortable place to dine.
Hari S — Google review
Over hyped place compared to places near the cliff. It was peaceful here though. We had Pizza and ice coffee. Cheese was really good on pizza and was perfect for people who can't handle spice, I wish the dough was not that dry especially the edge of the pizza, I saw many people wasting that part, maybe adding salsa would go great with it. It's a small and lovely space and super over crowded. Service in such a crowd was hard. I really liked that the crew handled it so nicely and with a smile.

Fortress
Historic Sites
Fort Anjengo Trivandrum is a stronghold built in the 1690s by the British, featuring high laterite walls that overlook the Indian Ocean. As Easy India company's first permanent port on the Malabar coast, it is an ancient and historically significant fort that is worth visiting in Varkala. The well-maintained fort boasts a peaceful atmosphere and a pleasant garden with various plants.
Well maintained. Neat and clean. No entry fee. Not crowded even on weekends or holidays. Hardly takes 10-15 minutes to walk around. Only problem is that the property do not have any parking. Have to park on the roadside and walk 200-300meters hence difficult for elderly or wheelchair/ stroller.
JOJIN A — Google review
Small Fort. No entry fee. There is no much inside, just a grassland to walk around, hardly 10 mins to complete it. Because of the illegal construction behind the fort, the great view of the ocean from the fort is lost. No parking and have to use street parking and streets are very narrow. Light house near the fort has a great view. When I visited it was Zero crowd.
Ravi K — Google review
The fort isn’t very big and there isn’t much to explore inside. However, the place is clean and well maintained, making it a pleasant short visit. Good for a quick stop if you’re nearby, but not worth a long detour.
Sandeep K — Google review
If you're traveling from Trivandrum to Varkala, make sure to stop by this charming fort! It's such a peaceful spot with beautiful architecture from the British era. Plus, the best part? Entry is free, and it's usually not crowded at all. It's the perfect place to relax and soak in some history!
Abhishek K — Google review
I recently visited Anjuthengu Fort and thoroughly enjoyed the experience! This historic coastal fort, one of the earliest British settlements in India, is a hidden gem near Varkala. The entry is completely free, which makes it an excellent stop for budget travelers. The fort is impressively well-maintained, with clean premises and well-preserved structures that offer a fascinating glimpse into its colonial past. The serene seaside location adds a tranquil vibe, with beautiful views that make it a great spot for history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. The only drawback is the parking situation. The lack of a dedicated parking area means you have to park along the narrow road, which can be challenging and sometimes leads to traffic congestion. Adding a small parking space would make visits much smoother. Despite this, the fort is well worth a visit for its historical charm and scenic beauty. Highly recommend if you’re in the Anchuthengu area!
Akash P — Google review
It's a place of historic importance where the first revolt against the British began from Kerala. It also houses a few tombstones. The name "Anjuthengu", a Malayalam British word, literally means "five coconut trees". Entry is free. It is maintained by the Kerala government. There's no parking in front of the entry gate.
Sudipto B — Google review
This fort holds significant historical importance relating to Kerala's freedom struggle. The fort is small, with a well-maintained lawn area that provides a pleasant, green space to relax. The real treat, though, is the view from the ramparts! A quick climb up the stairs rewards you with a fantastic, breezy ocean view. Entry to the fort is free. Just be aware that there is no dedicated parking space, vehicles have to be parked along the roadsides. For the absolute best scenery, head over to the nearby lighthouse .From there, you get a stunning panoramic vista: the vast ocean on one side and a serene lake on the other. It’s the perfect spot to capture some incredible photos!
Bijaylaxmi S — Google review
Anjuthengu Fort is a small historical site with free entry. It provides a quick look into colonial-era history but doesn’t offer much beyond the basic structure. My visit was average; I hoped to climb the lighthouse for panoramic views, but unfortunately, it was closed. Worth a short stop if you’re nearby, but adjust expectations—especially for the lighthouse.

Outdoor Activities
Kappil Beach is a stunning location where the sea meets a small lake, and coconut trees surround the sandy shores. The beach offers visitors the option to swim in either the lake or sea, but caution is advised when swimming in the sea due to danger signs. The sunset at Kappil Beach is breathtaking, with picturesque views of backwaters. However, it's disheartening to see waste littered around by some individuals.
I visited Kappil Beach during my trip to Kerala, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences. What I loved the most was the unique landscape where the river ends into the sea. Standing there, you can see the calm backwaters on one side and the vast Arabian Sea on the other—it feels like nature showing two different moods at the same place. The evening was really good here. The breeze was refreshing, and the atmosphere instantly made me feel relaxed. Watching the sunset was truly magical. The sky slowly turned into shades of orange and pink, and the reflection over the water made the whole scene even more beautiful. It’s a nice view that stays in your mind for a long time. What made the visit even better was the peace and quiet. The beach wasn’t crowded, so I could take a slow walk along the shore and just enjoy the sounds of the waves. I also found some great spots to sit, reflect, and take photos. Kappil Beach gave me a perfect mix of backwaters and beach vibes. If you’re looking for a calm, scenic place to enjoy nature, I would definitely recommend visiting here.
Sheikh Q — Google review
A beautiful beach with rocks placed on the shore. A good sight for our eyes. On rainy days your vehicle might have a chance to get stuck in the mud so park little away from those areas. There's also a backwater type of area where you can swim if you wish
ADITH — Google review
Excellent beach with back waters in one side and beach in other side. You can take bath in back waters and also activities like kayaking, boating, banana ride etc are available in the back waters. Kayaking is nicer in mangrove than here as it is more open space here.
Vijayakumar B — Google review
Found paradise! Kappil Beach is a stunning gem where the backwaters meet the Arabian Sea, creating a truly unique and peaceful landscape. The golden sand and swaying coconut palms made for the perfect backdrop to an unforgettable day. If you're looking for tranquility away from the crowds, this is the place. Loved the breathtaking sunset views from the bridge! 🌅 #KappilBeach #Kerala #HiddenGem #TravelKerala #NatureLovers
Dolly K — Google review
Beach with lesser crowd and a scenic view 🖤 roads in between backwaters and sea. You can sit on the rocks and witness the stunning sunset
BHARATH E — Google review
If you have a drone camera, this place is a lifetime treasure — the views you’ll capture are unforgettable. The morning and evening hours are the best times to visit, offering calm vibes, soft light, and perfect frames for photos or videos. Though the place attracts a good crowd, it never feels suffocating. You’ll always find free space to sit, relax, or walk around, which makes the experience enjoyable without losing that peaceful vibe. Parking facilities are available, making it convenient compared to many other tourist spots. However, during the rainy season, the mud road can be slippery and slightly difficult to walk, so it’s better to be prepared. The beauty of this spot is in its perfect balance — a scenic beach on one side and a lake view directly opposite. This rare combination of sea and lake together makes the place truly special and worth every visit. 🌊🌅 For bikers and groups of friends, this is a fantastic riding destination. The road trip feels rewarding, especially when you arrive in the evening to catch the sunset and cool breeze. The spot is already popular, but it still needs better maintenance and development. Clean surroundings, proper facilities, and a little more care would easily make this a top-tier tourist attraction. A big plus: there are no hidden charges, so you can freely enjoy the natural beauty without worrying about entry fees. In the evening, several small snack shops open around the area, offering tea, quick bites, and local treats that add to the experience. ✅ Overall Opinion: This place is a gem for travelers, bikers, and nature lovers. With a lively yet comfortable crowd, free space to enjoy, beach waves on one side, a calm lake on the other, parking availability, peaceful vibes, and tasty evening snacks — it’s an experience worth repeating. Just a bit more upkeep and development could turn it into one of the best tourist spots in the region. 🌴✨ 🚉 Varkala Railway Station is the nearest major stop (within 10 km) with good bus, auto, and bike connectivity till 10 PM. 🚉 Kapil Railway Station is also nearby, but only small passenger trains halt there with limited service.
Abhilash S — Google review
Kappil Beach hits differently in the morning. I was there around 6:30 AM, and the place was almost empty — perfect if you want calm, open space without people getting in the frame. The view is genuinely stunning, and the photos come out far better than you expect. You also get a unique mix of beach on one side and backwaters on the other, which adds a dramatic look to pictures. We even saw boats parked on the backwater side, so boating probably runs later in the day. Just one thing — there’s no public toilet around, but honestly, that’s true for most beaches here. Apart from that, it’s a solid spot for morning walks, photography, and creating reels without disturbance.
Shubham B — Google review
It offers a great experience at the backwaters and the beach is very pleasant on the other side of the road. They charge INR 200 for kayaking per hour and the water is very clear but salty.
