Outdoor Activities
Salcombe North Sands is a serene and picturesque cove offering stunning estuary views and sandy shores. At high tide, the beach is largely covered, revealing rock pools and creating a tranquil atmosphere. This horseshoe-shaped beach is popular in the summer due to its ample space for setting up camp and engaging in various seaside activities. A freshwater stream adds to the charm of this location, providing entertainment for dogs and a convenient spot to rinse off sandy feet.
An amazing beach with a good amount to do. I’d recommend to go during low tide as high tide will limit the amount of area there’s also a lot of seaweed during high tide. Not to mention a really nice place to eat. (We did paddle boarding here which you can rent and it was so fun!!)
Nevlos — Google review
Cheap, big parking, half full at Sunday around 11am, perfect place to start walk, close to South Beach and ferry. No caravans. Restaurant where you can order using app, free WiFi, no need waiting to make order.
GB P — Google review
A beautiful beach with fantastic views which is a must visit if in the area. The roads are quite narrow so be careful on the drive. The parking is also not big enough on a busy day. Another issue is the amenities. There is only one restaurant with a limited menu and no shops nearby.
S A — Google review
I don't really recommend this place. Although the beach itself is not to bad but the roads to get there are just a nightmare - twisty and narrow with hundreds of cars parked along all the way to the beach. Closer you want to get the less space you can find. At the bottom there is a small car park, though but completely staffed with cars at all times and paid even on Sundays and bank holidays. One restaurant only near the car park is very expensive and you need to install their phone app beforehand if you want to order something. I was surprised they don't do simple fish and chips. I believe food may be tasty but I resign on that occasion. The very limited space at this beach and overcrowded although it was still before the season were things that really put me off from this place. There is a nice long walk via main street to the town centre where you can enjoy some really nice views of the other side beaches and the pier of Salcombe, but that's about it. Would not go again to this side and South beach isn't any better for the mentioned reasons unfortunately. Very poorly arranged space as for the touristic place. I don't really see many pros about this location. Only the view and cliffs perhaps. But you can find those elsewhere.
Artur W — Google review
Love coming here every time we visit. Great for all ages. If tide is out then kids can play in sand and the water is low so great for paddling.
Ceri S — Google review
Beautiful location on a sunny day! Perfect for walks along the coasts with some truly breathtaking views. Car park is available but fills up pretty quickly. This part of Devon is highly recommended to visit.
Alfred A — Google review
Great day at North Sands! Sea temperature was good and scenery was a beautiful as ever!
Nils V — Google review
Beautiful on any day difficult when high tide as no beach left to sit on . Has a ferry to Salcombe town center and hire of all paddleboard and kayak rental. Shallow beach so good for kids to paddle but no life guards nearby

Historic Sites
Overbeck's Garden, located near Salcombe in Devon, is a must-visit National Trust property. The former home of the eccentric Edwardian inventor Otto Overbeck, it boasts an intriguing collection of maritime artifacts and eclectic inventions. The stunning subtropical gardens offer breathtaking sea views and are filled with exotic plants that thrive in the South Devon climate. This hidden paradise also features a quirky house with fascinating collections, making it a unique and captivating destination for visitors.
Beautiful place and well worth the hairpin bends on the way up. The views are breathtaking and the gardens are well thought out. The mrytle trees are stunning and the agapanthus are glorious. Loved the bespoke handrails throughout gardens and the banana garden is like being in a tropical country. If you need any inspiration for your garden...go!
Josephine T — Google review
Great visit, not very large but quite unique with some of the plants and the views are stunning. Lots of different paths to take that weave in and out of different gardens with varying focuses. We have young children, easier to carry, pram would be difficult.
Jamie H — Google review
Beautiful gardens. Still lots of flowers even in October. Catering just outside the entrance excellent. Quite a narrow winding road to get there but very worthwhile.
Val C — Google review
Really wonderful afternoon here. The gardens are beautiful, lots of lovely flowers and palm trees. Plenty of birds to see. The gardens are pretty much all dog friendly apart from the banana garden and front lawn otherwise they can go everywhere and there is water bowls at the entrance for them. There is a lovely little cafè. I would highly recommend a visit here.
Bec — Google review
Lovely gardens and interesting foliage. The house was closed when we visited, but we enjoyed the most magnificent views and walks. The volunteers were friendly and welcoming.
Twin C — Google review
Very nice well kept gardens with many exotics. Good walks/trails with some lovely views over the surrounding countryside.
Len E — Google review
Always a treat coming to this garden. A lovely walk from Salcombe past North and South Sands along the narrow and steep roads! (there's a lovely footpath getting out of the top of Salcombe if you can find it!!) The gardens are very well kept and beautiful. We have been many times and will come back many more!
Alex L — Google review
Beautiful National Trust gardens overlooking South Sands bay. The staff are very friendly and knowledgable, and dogs on leads are allowed into the gardens. There’s a cafe by the entrance that serves really nice coffee / cold drinks, and food (focaccia sandwiches, cakes, decent vegan options etc!). There is parking just outside, and access to the coastal path direct from the garden. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

The Winking Prawn is a popular eatery located near North Sands beach in Salcombe, offering a diverse menu that includes seafood, barbecue options, children's dishes, and ice cream. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and provides ample outdoor seating by the beach. It's known for its beachy-themed food such as prawns, ice creams, and Devonshire cream teas. The establishment also offers a dressing up box to keep kids entertained.
Nestled in the picturesque coastal town of Salcombe, The Winking Prawn offers a charming dining experience with both indoor and outdoor seating that provides a stunning view of the sea. The ambiance is relaxed, perfect for a casual meal while enjoying the fresh sea breeze. The restaurant specializes in BBQ grill seafood, where you get to choose two options from a tempting selection that includes prawns, chicken, salmon, and more. Each dish is accompanied by fresh bread and a vibrant salad, making for a satisfying and well-rounded meal. The seafood is grilled to perfection, with each bite delivering a burst of flavor, particularly the prawns which were succulent and flavorful. Desserts are a highlight here. The sticky toffee pudding is rich and indulgent, a must-try for anyone with a sweet tooth. The Eton mess, with its perfect blend of meringue, cream, and berries, offers a lighter but equally delicious end to the meal. Whether you opt for the cozy indoor seating or the breezy outdoor area, The Winking Prawn delivers a delightful dining experience with great food, friendly service, and a view that’s hard to beat. Highly recommended for seafood lovers and those looking to enjoy a meal with a scenic backdrop.

If you’re in Devon then it’s paramount to visit The Winking Prawn! A MUST visit for their delicious seafood, service and atmosphere, add the views across the Sands as the tide rolls in then you’re in for a memorable moment. Owner Lucy and her hard working staff are superb, friendly and always nothing is too much to ask. Countless visits and we always look forward to our next visit, sun, rain or heatwave, the winking prawn is very special. ❤️ 10/10

Loved it! Sat outside under umbrella in sunshine on Saturday in August. Lovely staff and delicious food. Very happy! Wasps were our only problem - same every where though. Thank you!
Nils V — Google review
Absolutely lovely beach side restaurant. Great views, lovely staff and tasty food. You will see some pretty nasty and petty reviews about the food. None of them deserved. Is this the best food you will ever have? No, but for where you are. The food is perfectly delicious. Really well cooked, always hot and lovely staff serving you. I would definitely stop here again next time I'm back in Salcombe really enjoyed my time here.
Ali ( — Google review
Rubber sandwich on a meal deal from Boots is similar and a lot cheaper! So sad we have been patrons of the Winking Prawn for many years. We have had coffee, lunches and dinners and it's a lovely venue and location and until today I have not felt ripped off and disappointed. In total our bill was in excess of £130; which I have no issue with, if its good. This was my sons lunch. Rubber cheese, a super market -bake at home baguette for an eye watering £9 ish.. albeit minus the lettuce and mayo to act as a filler. Presentation, nil points, effort nil, flavour, nil, quality nil. It's just not worth it. I can buy a meal deal, grab a picnic blanket and have the same.
Sarah M — Google review
The Winking Prawn is always busy, and for good reason. We’ve been coming here for many years, but right now it’s enjoying a real surge in popularity thanks to its appearance in Netflix’s The Roses starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. On a sunny day we had to wait a little while, but eventually found a table with a beautiful sea view – dogs welcome everywhere too, which we love. During our three-week holiday we ate here three times: the afternoon barbecue twice and the Po’boy once. All the food was delicious – the peppered steaks were a bit tough and heavy on the spice rub, but on another visit we had the prawns which were, as always, fantastic. On that occasion our order was forgotten, and although the chef had already gone off shift, he ran back through the pouring rain to cook it fresh for us – above and beyond! Prices are on the higher side, so don’t expect a bargain, but this is very much part of the holiday experience – the food, the view, the lively atmosphere, and even the fun nods to The Roses with a cute fairground-style board where you can pop your head through for a photo. As you can see from my photos, it’s the perfect place to treat yourself while soaking up the Salcombe seaside vibe
A N — Google review
We visited here because of The Roses, but don’t let that be your reason, we sat inside and found this a chic, classy beach restaurant and I can’t wait to visit again. We only had a drink, but the service was excellent and the staff were very helpful. Hooray for the winking prawn 😍
Roy — Google review
Distinctly average. Would not recommend or return. A pacific spread of cold seafood platters all served as if you were in an 80s caf'. £27 for 10 frozen king prawns and a bean salad which came from a tin. Buckets of staff that were sweet and friendly but knew nothing of the offering. Serving the worst aperol spritz I've ever put to my lips is embarrassing enough but worse when the second is no better! Extortionate. Would not recommend unless you are a tourist who lost their sense of taste and smell from COVID.

Salcombe Maritime Museum is a treasure trove of nautical history, showcasing artifacts from local shipwrecks and the shipbuilding trade. The highlight is the 500 Moroccan gold dinars from the Salcombe Cannon wreck site, dating back to the 13th to 17th centuries. The museum also features evocative tools of the shipbuilding trade, models of boats, and exhibits about World War II and local wrecks.
Fantastic small museum! Worth a visit!

Excellent small local museum full of fascinating artefacts linking to history of Salcombe . Really enjoyed the visit. The museum provides a real view back into Salcombe’s past , particularly the era of sailing / trading ships , and WW2. Highly recommend a visit - allow an hour. Free but why not make a donation ?

Great little museum. So much history and interesting artifacts in such a small building. Friendly helpful staff, worth a visit to learn about Salcombes past.

A lovely little museum, that does a great deal with the artefacts they have and gives a far more detailed and varied experience than many larger museums.

Salcombe Distilling Company is a picturesque distillery and bar located in the charming coastal town of Salcombe, South Devon. Founded by gin enthusiasts Angus and Howard, this waterfront establishment offers visitors the opportunity to savor their signature Salcombe & Tonic while taking in stunning estuary views. Guests can observe the skilled distillers crafting the acclaimed Start Point gin on Provident, an impressive 450l copper pot still showcased within the distillery.
Exceptional service and the distillery tour is really good fun! A party of 6 and we had a fantastic time. Well worth a visit. The team are friendly and knowledgeable and the whole experience was spot on! Thank you!
Jemma T — Google review
An unforgettable experience at Salcombe Gin Bar! We had an incredible time at the Salcombe Gin Bar – the atmosphere was vibrant yet relaxed, and the setting right by the water made it even more special. The real standout, though, was the service. Crystal was absolutely fantastic – warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about what she does. She took the time to walk us through the gin menu, made brilliant recommendations based on our tastes, and mixed up some of the best cocktails we've ever had. Her attention to detail and friendly energy really elevated the whole experience. Can’t recommend this place enough – we’ll definitely be back!
Nathaniel B — Google review
A birthday gift and a great afternoon of drinking and making gin was had by all. Harry and Chris were our hosts and talked us through the distilling process in their distilling room, Chris then took us through our gin making and tasting! Gin made bottled and labelled, then back to the bar to sample of own masterpieces with Jake’s sound counsel as to what garnishes we should have. A memorable day thank you one and all
Stuart B — Google review
Perfect gift! A wonderful opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Salcombe and the joy of creating one's own gin. Very happy wife.
William T — Google review
I owned a house in Island Street for nearly 30 years and was delighted when the Salcombe Distillery was built on the site of the old Island Cruising Club Boathouse When the cocktail bar opened, I was very excited to pay a visit. On the first few occasions I treated our party to Salcombe Gin Marmahitos, which were superb if not a little pricey at £12 each. Last weekend I was in Salcombe with my partner and we decided to treat ourselves to one of these wonderful drinks. Unfortunately the quality is now quite poor, with no caramelised dried orange (which we had to ask for) very little marmalade flavour and yet these are now £14 each. I would not mind paying for the drink as it once was but not as it is now. Come on Salcombe Gin if you are going to charge premium prices your customers should receive a premium drink.
Linda B — Google review
Terrible experience on the first night of our holiday. Popped in for a cocktail before dinner, were brusquely brushed off to a table by the bar staff when we asked whether we should order there or at the table. Waited for service to come, none arrived. Flagged down a member of staff to be told he wasn't serving, but with a tasting group. Went back to the bar to be told someone would come and, about 20 minutes after our arrival, finally piggy back ordered from a waiter delivering drinks to the neighbouring couple who had also complained about the delay. The bar had fewer than 10 customers in it. 15 minutes later, still no sign of our drinks and when a second round of drinks was brought to the couple we checked to be told they had no record of our order. We left and expressed our disappointment to a female member of bar staff who smirked at us and gave not a word of a regret or an apology. We won't be back, nor ever buy the brand. Incredibly disappointing.
Orange B — Google review
Loved the Gin School experience I did back in September. There are so many botanicals to choose from to "make" your gin. I did the experience solo and I didn't feel awkward so don't be afraid to do this on your own! Highly recommend this to anyone who loves gin.
Trish V — Google review
Every single detail is so very well thought out. The shop alone is a work of art, and even resembles a gallery with gorgeous photography adorning the walls and beautiful bottles displayed well. The distillery is open for all to see at one end of a bright and airy open-plan bar area with feels like a boathouse overlooking the glistening estuary. All staff are welcoming, knowledgeable and generous. The gin school especially was both fascinating and exciting, teaching you so much more than your regular distillery tour. You have some upfront learning about gin making in the main distillery and then you are brought to apply your learning practically whilst making your own gin with your own set of botanicals in your own dedicated copper still. You then bottle, name, label and package your own gin with enough to have a gin & tonic or two with your own creation at the bar. Very, very well done - will absolutely be back.

Nestled away from the bustling crowds, Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream is a charming gem located just off the main Island Street walkway. Since its inception in 1979 by founder Peter Howard, this delightful store and café has been crafting exquisite ice cream using a beloved recipe that remains unchanged to this day.
The ice cream is rich, creamy , live up to the region's reputation for producing excellent dairy products. It has slightly higher butterfat content compared to some other ice creams, resulting in a more indulgent and creamy experience. One of the best ice cream i have tried.

Really good ice cream. I highly recommend the chocolate-orange : not too sweet and a fine balance between chocolate and orange. We had tea there too. Good quality. There is also plenty of seating outside to enjoy your ice cream without standing. Side note: loved the bamboo ‘spoons’!

Salcombe Dairy makes great ice cream, but it’s the milkshakes you want! A Chocolate Honeycomb milkshake from here is my absolute favourite beverage. Fortunately as an adult in my 50s there is no one to say I can’t have one 😁

Amazing chocolate, and delicious ice-cream. I have found my new favourite chocolate! It meets all my criteria: small local producer using quality ingredients, organic, amazing tasting chocolate, love it. I visited the cafe and shop on a recent holiday and bought a selection of bars. Will definitely order more.

Best icecream I've ever had. We live in Broadstairs and the name for icecream there is Morellis. Salcombe icecream beats them hands down. I had chocolate and honeycomb and my husband had chocolate orange. I've never had an icecream that tastes so much like eating a high quality chocolate bar.

It’s a regular stop every time we visit Salcombe 😃 We even got few tubs to take home & just realised that they deliver it! 😀vainilla Madagascar is one of the best in 🇬🇧, the strawberry until last year too. This batch it’s a lack of strawberry’s. The Belgian chocolate lovely. I wish one day they will make a Pistachio! They also sell chocolates that they are very good & vegan. Mill Bay is a picturesque beach located in Salcombe, offering stunning views and a relaxing atmosphere. Visitors can reach the bay by walking 300 meters from East Portlemouth beach when the tide is out or taking the East Portlemouth Ferry when it's in. The sandy stretch provides an ideal spot for sunbathing and building sandcastles. Additionally, adventurous explorers can access more beaches and coves by joining the South West Coast Path.
Took the pedestrian ferry from Salcombe to Mill Bay and enjoyed our walk on the South West Coast Path out to Gara Rock and looped back on an inland public path, about five miles in all. Beautiful ocean views and sandy beaches on a gorgeous day in early October. Great way to spend a morning or afternoon.

Mill Bay is such a special spot. Accessible from Salcombe via ferry or via road, using the car park nearby. Arrive early though as parking can be an issue either way. We have also seen lots of people arrive on their own water sports equipment. The bay is very child friendly and the stream to the side of the bay is sure to entertain them for a while.
Kristin F — Google review
Visited on a recent holiday in Devon and, despite being more than an hours drive from where we were staying, well worth it. The sea here is lovely and the beach clean and golden, so much so that it was easy to believe we had some how travelled abroad. Well worth a few hours if in the area - or even a little away from it. I would recommend parking in Salcombe and taking the foot ferry across as, while there is national trust parking a few steps from the beach, this seemed to fill up quickly and only be accessible down a number of small twisty single track roads.
Terry S — Google review
Great beach! Not too crowded on a warm and sunny 24° day. The single track roads are very, very narrow but everyone is quite cooperative and patient in traffic which helps you get through. It takes around 45 minutes on such narrow roads, so keep that in mind. Parking gets full quickly but there's alternative parking a mile away (20min walk) for just £5/day.
Paras D — Google review
Gorgeous beach to relax on. We got the ferry across from Salcombe and hung out here for a while. Despite us only being 9 degrees or so it was really sheltered and felt a lot warmer. Some brave people were in the sea but it looked freezing!

Great little beach with plenty to do and lovely scenic views.. Very good area to stay if you fancy a break in Salcombe. Ferry available to the town, decent cafe on the beach. Kayak and paddle board hire also available. If your a beach person worth a try.
Hippy C — Google review
Beautiful area, the beach itself is a little small so could get cramped if busy, but the beach bar provides everything you could want, and had great covid protections/systems in place. The best views come from a short walk along the coastal path... Honestly it's a crime to not take a quick peek from the top 😍 The road down to the area is tiny (I'm not sure if there is an alternative but I couldn't find one) so if you have a large vehicle, take care! There is parking in a National Trust car park at a flat rate of £6 (payment by phone) for the whole day, plenty of spaces available.
Gill T — Google review
Really nice place. No public parking, only for hotel and restaurant guests but big parking on North sands. 10 min walk. Unless you disabled, you should be good. I saw even two fat people managed to do so, quite steep walk. Bar, food, coffee, public toilet, ferry if you need. 4pounds each way to centre, kayaks 30£ for 2ppl

Victoria Inn in Salcombe is a charming and well-kept character pub with new owners, Tim Hore and Liz Sheldon, who have brought a new level of warmth and friendliness to the establishment. The pub features a stone fireplace, low-beamed ceilings, and a grassy beer garden with a kids' play area. It offers a relaxed and cozy atmosphere inside with open lit fires in winter, while in summer there's a stunning sun terrace and garden.
We had an absolutely fantastic experience at The Victoria Inn in Salcombe. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly, and everything you’d hope for from a charming coastal pub. Special shoutout to the amazing staff – Claudia, Erin, and Ewen – who went above and beyond to make our visit memorable. Claudia was incredibly warm and attentive, Erin had a great sense of humour and made sure everything ran smoothly, and Ewen’s friendly service and local knowledge really added to the experience. You can tell they all genuinely care about the guests and the pub. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re in Salcombe. Highly recommend!

Booked Sunday lunch here. On walking in the decor was extremely on peng. Really smart and comfortable. Sunday roast was delicious and I had the Moules Marinaire. Absolutely delicious and sizeable portions. Absolutely full and service first class. Would definitely recommend.

Such a warm welcome at the Victoria tonight. We hadn’t made a reservation and Salcombe was very busy but the staff at the Victoria couldn’t have been more friendly throughout. Nothing was too much trouble. The bar staff were very helpful and even brought our drinks over to our table so I could sit down with my Mother. Our waitress was so helpful too. Highly recommend and so unusual in Salcombe at this time of year to feel so welcomed with all the tourists to accommodate. Food delicious too. Thank you 🙏

Lovely little pub right in the heart of Salcombe. The menu is great with plenty of tasty options, including lots of gluten free choices which is such a bonus. The beer garden out the back is gorgeous... one of the best spots in town to relax with a drink on a sunny day. They have undercover and blankets for cooler days. Staff were friendly and welcoming, and it’s very dog friendly too which made it even better. Highly recommend if you’re visiting Salcombe :)

I had an incredible dining experience at the Victoria Inn and truly cannot recommend it highly enough. I visited on two separate evenings and was thoroughly impressed both times. The first night, I enjoyed a beautifully cooked beef fillet, tender, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. On the second evening, we returned for their Sunday roast, which was equally outstanding. Every dish was crafted with care and full of rich, satisfying flavor. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the service was excellent, making the entire experience even more memorable. If you’re looking for top-notch food in a welcoming setting, the Victoria Inn is a must-visit.

We hired the beer garden of the Victoria Inn for a big get togther the day after our wedding. It was absolutely perfect and we couldn't be more grateful. All staff were very helpful, kind and attentive. Food was plentiful and excellent. We were also able to have a bar just for ourselves in the beer garden and able to play our own music. It is also worth mentioning this beer garden in more detail as from the front you wouldn't know. It extends back and upwards with lots of seating both outside and undercover with amazing views of Salcombe harbour. Also has a great play area for kids that a lot of our guests found very handy. If you are thinking of having a function in Salcombe, look no further than Victoria Inn. It is superb.

Without doubt this is the very best pub / restaurant in Salcombe, by a country mile!! We have tried most, if not all of their competition in Town and there is no other that can hold a candle to them for; the quality of the service, the food and the value for money. All of the staff are clearly invested in what this pub is aiming to do, and that is to provide a friendly welcome along with great service and great food and drinks. And by the way, the Victoria also provides the best value on the price of their beers, wines and other drinks. There is no doubt that Salcombe is an expensive place to visit, but the Victoria's prices do not make you go 'ouch' when presented with the bill. All in all a great place to spend an afternoon or an evening. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Thank you to all the staff at the Victoria for looking after us so well.

It was a very busy Saturday of the Bank Holiday. For reasons we hadn’t booked but were able to find a table in the lovely beer garden. It turned out they were also short staffed but our server Tara did an amazing job of looking after us and everyone else. Food was very good.

The Ferry Inn, a beloved establishment in Salcombe since 1739, is the perfect spot for gathering with loved ones. Its famous waterside terrace offers a picturesque view of passing yachts and the ferry to East Portlmouth. Locals and tourists alike praise it as one of the most beautifully situated pubs globally. With its prime waterfront location near the ferry jetty, The Ferry Inn provides breathtaking views over the estuary.
Excellent service and great views across the harbour. Good selection of quality drinks, including real ales. We didn't get food here as it was a planned stop on our pub crawl in Salcombe. A nice little touch was the mini pub games they leave out on the tables at the top bar. There are picnic tables at the outside lower area with its own bar at that level.

What a wonderful place to enjoy an evening meal. Great staff a fantastic atmosphere and great food. Only downside is the price of alcohol here but the view is amazing
Paul D — Google review
Had a good drink but then when it came time for dinner we ordered a fish and chips and a beef burger. Which then took 40 minutes to be served and after the wait the burger was overdone however the fish and chips were good. Been for drinks many times before and it’s always good but got let down big time by the burger.

What a location! Great terrace overlooking the harbour, and a cosy bar above when the weather is not so good.

There were 17 of us and we had the Sunday pork Porcetta and Seafood basket for dinner. The pork was so tender and everything was so fresh and delicious. The service was also so friendly and fantastic. It was faultless

I recently visited The Ferry Inn while on a trip to Salcombe, and I have to say, the view from the garden is absolutely fantastic. On a sunny day, it’s the perfect spot to sit back with a drink and take in the scenery — a real highlight of the visit. Unfortunately, the food didn’t quite live up to the setting. I ordered a steak cooked rare, and while I enjoy a rare steak, this one was underdone to the point of being almost raw. Service was also underwhelming; it took around 40 minutes for our food to arrive, which felt excessive considering how quiet it was at the time. All in all, I’d definitely return for a drink and to enjoy the atmosphere, but I’d probably skip the food next time.
David H — Google review
Lovely pub, very popular so may struggle to grab a table. Watch out for the sea gulls circling, staff are good at dispersing them.
Pappsy7 — Google review
Visited a couple of times in the week. A pint around lunchtime, with a couple of portions of chips, and sat outside overlooking the estuary and later in the week an evening meal. The staff are always friendly and helpful. The food is good old, no fuss pub grub. Good selection of beers, cider and spirits, oh and soft drinks! It's not flash, but it great and we would highly recommend it.

Salcombe Harbour is a delightful destination that offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Begin your holiday with a leisurely stroll along the vibrant harbourfront, where you can discover charming eateries, unique shops, and beautiful beaches. For those seeking excitement on the water, Salcombe Harbour is an ideal spot for paddleboarding, canoeing, or sailing—equipment rentals and lessons are readily available from local providers.
Just a beautiful village not big with some beautiful scenery and interesting shops,be warned one way road through town and it gets packed in season time so you might be stuck in the road waiting for deliveries to offload their goods.
Average G — Google review
Great place but unfortunately the parking situation is ridiculous. My mom can’t walk far and the parking was halved making it worse than ever due to the crab festival. Just not enjoyable visiting anymore as it’s so congested with cars trying to park. The shops were empty due to this? Some wonderful shops and eateries there though when you finally manage to get a spot.
Kate F — Google review
Nice harbour town, nice shops some quite high end though. Parking was a bit tricky to work out but ended up on the park and ride which was fine. Bit mad if you miss and have to drive through the town which is very tight lol. Good for half a day visit and explore.

Beautiful town with busy harbour. Parking is expensive but we managed to park for free (2 hours max) on several occasions just above the Salcombe Yacht club which is about 7-10 min walk to the harbour

Ferry service
The South Sands Ferry is a popular attraction in Salcombe, offering a fun adventure for both kids and adults. Operating between town and South Sands Beach from March to October, the ferry provides stunning views of the Kingsbridge Estuary before reaching its destination via a sea tractor. While some visitors found the fare slightly higher than expected, many agree that the experience is worth it for the unique perspective it offers of Salcombe and its beautiful surroundings.
Good fun and most efficient way to get back to Salcombe town centre (to avoid walking over those pesky hills!)
C M — Google review
Loved the South Sands Ferry experience - what better way is there to get to Salcombe Town Centre than over the water and into Salcombe Harbour? Makes an interesting adventure to spice up your visit to Salcombe. About 20 minutes to take the trip from South Sands Beach. A Sea Tractor waits on the beach at South Sands to take you to board the ferry (as there is no pier). The ferry boat then heads around the headland and down the Salcombe Estuary, passing some nice beaches and fantastic views. Finally it arrives at a pier right next to Salcombe Town Centre. Very reasonably priced for such a nice trip. Covered interior with seating if you need it too.
Neil T — Google review
Got to be done! Reasonable fares for the best view of Salcombe! Even one way and walk back around the bay to your starting point it’s worth doing. Re: Previous review about £18 for two. Not sure what they were riding but it is certainly not that price for two. More like £9.
O B — Google review
Cost me £18 for 1 adult 1 child for 20mins. I had had a chat with the boat owner/driver/help, explaining that we only had an hour till we had to be back at the car and yet at no point was I told the fee was one way only and it wasn't advertised as such on the side of the Dock or boat. Rip off for what it is; upset me to be truthful!!!
Victoria R — Google review
Didn’t mind paying the £3.80 each to get over to South Sands but once we got over there it was clear that there actually nothing there other than the hotel and a beach bar. You could get a coffee in the hotel but no cake, the service was slow and wished is just gone in the beach bar. I wouldn’t recommend this £15 round trip. I would get the little water boat over to the beach opposite Salcombe where there is a lovely beach to walk along and a proper tea room
Pam B — Google review
Gotta be done! It's not a boat it's a tractor. Are we driving back to Salcombe??? Stop it's too deep we need a boat 🚢! Great experience and really helpful team. Great for little kids and big kids alike!
Jonathan K — Google review
A tad more expensive than I was expecting and not to the location we’d seen from Salcombe. This was our fault as the boat clearly stated to south sands beach. 2 adults and 2 kids £27.20 return. Just don’t expect a gorgeous white sands that you see at East Portlemouth beach, Small cove and Mill Bay.

You can take your family to enjoy a swim at the Salcombe & District Swimming Pool Association. This small but wonderful facility offers a heated outdoor pool where children can have fun while lifeguards ensure their safety. You can also relax in the sun while your kids are entertained. The pool has convenient parking and is kept at a pleasant temperature for swimming enjoyment.
Fantastic outdoor pool, nice and warm, plenty of space with floats and pool toys available to use for the family swim sessions. Much cheaper than the hotel pools in town and much more accommodating for young families.
Alastair W — Google review
We were on holiday. My grandson wanted to go swimming in the pool. The girl on reception said we have to pre-book.!! She eventually gave in and said we had an hour like everyone else. The water was nice. Pool clean. The changing facilities need to be brought up to the 21st century. The outside temperature was 27°. The changing room minus also only 2 showers 1 toilet. Not impressed. The cost was I think £11. For myself and 8year old.
Stephen B — Google review
Great pool, tired but only needs a clean, a little weeding and maybe a lick of paint. Most can be done for free. Great to have floats and toys for kids but the broken boxes and broken toys werent a good look. I'm sure businesses in the area would donate replacements free for some small advertising. Some may even pay for paint. You have a jewel in your town/village look after it and blow its trumpet.

Located on the picturesque waterfront of Salcombe, Crab Shed Salcombe is a casual restaurant renowned for its focus on fresh seafood, particularly local crab and lobster. The restaurant offers panoramic views from its al fresco sundeck dining area, allowing guests to savor their meal while taking in the beauty of the harbor. With a reputation for serving some of the freshest catch in Salcombe, Crab Shed Salcombe is a popular choice for those seeking outstanding seafood.
What a wonderful dining experience. Nice to return, and despite the high expectations after our previous visit, we were blown away by the quality of our Easter Sunday lunch. Dog friendly so perfect for a post-walk lunch. The standard menu with a special starter and a catch of the day. Wonderful service from the off, pitched perfectly. We decided on a terrace table to enjoy the sea air as we ate. Food highlights included the special starter of the soft taco with breaded plaice with a beautiful offsetting salsa. The crab bisque is always a joy. Moules marinière was accompanied by the crabby fries. Possibly the best moules I've ever had. Nice to know also from where the various seafood has been sourced. All local of course. We couldn't manage pudding, despite the temptation of a sticky toffee pud. Espressos rounded off the meal, ready for the onward walk. Such a perfect place to enjoy some of the best seafood around. Cooked with great skill, and served by lovely people. Bravo.
Matthew D — Google review
Really wonderful meal here. Service was very good, professional, friendly, there when you need them. The outside tables could do with slightly improved weather protection, one table in particular has no weather protection due to a broken awning. Cooking of the food was very good nearly perfect, all the food was extremely fresh, the scallops were large and very tasty, lobster was over cooked for my liking either that or I was eating a frozen one, clams on the v.small side, still one of the best choices in the country for a sea food spectacular. 9 out of 10. Can’t wait to return.

Set on the Salcombe Quayside, the Crab Shed offers freshly caught fayre in an intimate setting. The service was attentive, although our dog wasn't offered a bowl of water which you would expect at a dog friendly restaurant, and particular care was given to accommodate my crustacean allergy, The food was tasty; the scallops were delicious and my wife loved her linguini. A great little restaurant and well worth visiting; book well in advance as it gets busy!

We had a wonderful time! The servers were so nice and friendly, and the food was absolutely incredible full of flavor and beautifully prepared. Sunny Cove Beach, part of the Hope Cove area, consists of two picturesque sandy stretches separated by a rocky outcrop. Visitors can enjoy activities like building sandcastles, exploring rock pools, and sunbathing while taking a dip in the clear sheltered waters. Accessible via the East Portlemouth ferry, it is also close to other lovely beaches such as Smalls Cove and Mill Bay.
There isn’t much to say in all honestly, this is one of the many small beaches dotted along the side of the river / estuary. As with all of them, it is lovely. Nice in size and fairly flat, the water is close and easily accessible. There are some nice walks close by and many of the beaches are linked along a wooded walking path.

Gorgeous beach, driving to it is a bit of a nightmare - lots of patience needed as it's a single road with very tight passing spaces so you have to keep pulling over to let people pass in high season! Get there early to avoid the car park being too busy too - it probably got full around 11 on the Friday that we went. Beach definitely is worth it, lots to explore, and easy to take the ferry over to Salcombe (£2.50 per person per ride).

Unbelievable every time. Delicious treats. Friendly and helpful service. The fudge is a real show stopper and better than anywhere else that I have tried. They have an incredible range of treats. You’d be foolish to go anywhere else!

I’m a nutritionist eating a sweet shop five stars! Sounds like a disconnect but perhaps a little background will give context. I grew up in salcombe and lived there from 1981-1997 and it’s barely changed. Yes there’s a few of the modern confectionary, there are still so many traditional sweets which preserve the mentality that a sweet shop means just that, not grab a mars bar at the checkout without thought but actually Cranch’s makes you think about what you’re buying and this educates children into making sensible decisions which is fundamental for long term health :) Great to see the shop is still thriving without ‘selling out’ as such and has stuck to its core values. There’s a reason Cranch’s still exists whilst so many other shops in Salcombe don’t beyond a few year and I’d suggest since 1869 is pretty good going! Cheers! Adam Stevens.

Couldn't ask for a nicer location overlooking the harbour. Food and drink were top quality, with attentive, friendly service.
Nick H — Google review
The best thing about this place is the view. Access is difficult. There is no car park. A wheelchair user has to be dropped off at the library next door, and then use the tiny lift and multiple corridors and doors to get in. Had some curry. Cheap price reflected in small portions and under spicing. Disappointing and won't be rushing back.

We had a pleasent meal here. Was a little disappointed by the selection of food. But not sure if that was because of the covid 19. But very nice location over looking the river away from the maddening crowds of solcombe. And good service... Thanks guys

Fantastic service, beach delivery and pick up at North sands. Good quality equipment and safety focus. We hired 2 x SUP’s and had a great time. Thank you!

We hired a two person kayak for a few hours on a beautiful sunny day - the guys gave us great, detailed advice about tide times, coves to explore and how to use all of the equipment, which was fantastic. Couldn’t recommend enough!
Stephanie B — Google review
Tom was brilliant. He gave us a lesson/tour/how to stay safe on the estuary session so that my daughter and her friend could paddle board safely on their own boards for the rest of our stay. We struck really lucky with the weather so North Sands and the estuary were glorious. When I decided that I'd like to do a bit more paddle boarding too, Tom was super helpful dropping off a board to us and picking it up the following day - thank you so much Tom

Great service, dropped off to our campsite a few miles from Salcombe, was very flexible hours and allowed us to have the Kayak the full day. Kayak look new and in good condition. Great day all round would fully recommend.

His prices are the most competitive in the area and the equipment was high quality. I would highly recommend North Sands Water Sports. Wow, thank you Ali for a wonderful morning! Such a special way to explore this beautiful stretch of coastline - stunning views, sea air, and sense of adventure. Ali was the perfect guide: knowledgeable, fun, and made sure we all felt safe while still having a blast out on the water. Couldn’t recommend Salcombe Sea N Shore more – we’ll definitely be back!

An absolutely fantastic experience! I have been on the 60minute and 75 minute trip, both were fabulous. Hearing and seeing the history of Salcombe and the local area, to the wildlife spotting ( we were lucky enough to see the seals and numerous birds) and fast speed rib turns, it is all wonderful.
Penelope — Google review
Sea n Shore is a must do if you’re visiting salcombe! We had an amazing 75 min trip, it was wonderful to see salcombe from the Sea. Ali was very knowledgeable, it was great to hear about the history of the area. We were lucky enough to see seal, and even dolphins jumping out of the water which was so special. We loved the high speed ride on the way back along with the chocolate biscuits! A really memorable trip. Thank you!

I would highly recommend Ali and Salcombe Sea Shore rib rides to everyone visiting Salcombe. We have been twice this week and both thrips have been amazing with seals and wildlife and amazing dolphins on the second trip. We had a tour of the estuary with historical and wildlife facts as part of the tour. Ali is focuses on safety as well as fun and nothing is too much trouble! It’s truly made our holiday extra special!

OH MY WORD!! If you are in or around Salcombe….in fact, in Devon…make sure you go on a trip with Ali! What a fantastic (and quickest!!) 75 mins of our holiday. Yes, literally we went quickly but the time flew as the experience was just amazing. We were lucky enough to see a pod of dolphins with 3 calves, some seals and the beautiful scenery. We cannot recommend this trip more, Ali is so friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. She got our group immediately, making the trip fun and welcoming. An all round magical 75 minutes which we wish lasted longer! Thanks for the biscuits too! X

Very happy with the boat ride. On arrival, we were given instructions on the estuary rules, directions and a map showing points of interest. Another member of the team showed us how to use the boat and took us out for a quick demo. We sailed for 2hrs, stopping over at a local pub. Very very beautiful and pleasant experience. East Portlemouth Beach, also known as Fishermans Cove, is a charming sandy stretch that transforms into smaller coves during high tide. The shallow waters make it perfect for families with kids, and the soft sands are great for beach activities. Surrounded by a wooded hillside and the South West Coast Path, this tranquil beach offers excellent facilities and is dog-friendly.
Stunning little secluded beach on Salcombe estuary, facing Salcombe itself across the water. Parking is an 8 min walk away and costs £5 or you can get a ferry across from Salcombe itself. You often get crystal clear water, if slightly cold to swim in!
Toby C — Google review
This is a review for Mill Bay. Can't comment on the beach sadly as we never made it. The road to get to it is very narrow and the National Trust car park very small. No signage at all to tell visitors that the car park is full. Turning round is very difficult and then you're back on the narrow roads trying to get past people who are also going to have to turn around. No complaints about the roads - that's what Devon is like. But some kind of signage to stop people driving all the way down there would be really useful.

Salcombe is definitely the Jewel in the Crown when it comes to the Estuaries in The South West It’s got numerous golden sandy beaches and very accessible for swimming. When the tides in there’s miles of safe sheltered water for sailing or motor boating amazing creeks to explore, there wonderful coat paths to wander around, In the area there’s many places to stay either expensive hotels or good B and B, great camping and caravan sites and fantastic food options and speciality fish or crab restaurants

Such a gorgeous beach and the cafe is amazing too! Clean toilets at the top of the track as well. Super easy to get the little ferry from Salcombe.

Excellent beach. Access is a little tricky for wheel chair or pushchair users and the beach is cut off for about an hour each side of high tide, but it quickly opens or to a long expanse of beautiful soft sand with great views across the estuary to Salcombe

Ordered a personalised clutch bag from my Nieces 30th birthday. Contacted to say it was out of stock but could use an alternative material. As I wanted it to arrive on or before the day I said I was ok as long as it could be delivered on time. Royal Mail sent a note to my niece to say she had to pay £3.50 postage and then didn’t deliver until after her birthday. I emailed Willbees to share my disappointment but I have heard nothing back and now out of pocket by £3.50. The bag is very pretty, but disappointed with the service ☹️

Gallery 5 is an exquisite establishment that showcases the magnificent glass artworks created by Margaret Johnson. The gallery offers a wide array of stunning designs, including one particularly captivating piece featuring groups of fish. Visitors are warmly greeted by John, who provides both friendly and reserved assistance throughout their exploration of the gallery. The collection includes various items, such as a large vase and matching deep bowl commissioned from the artist herself.
We have bought several pieces of Margaret Johnson's glass works of art from this gallery. We absolutely love a design which contains shoals of fish. This Bank Holiday weekend we popped in and were greeted by John in his usual friendly but reserved manner. He is happy for customers to wander around and is very, very helpful. We had previously bought a very large vase and on this occasion he had exactly the same shape in the showroom but in different colours. We bought it and John rang the artist to commission a deep bowl to match. We eagerly await its delivery. I advise anyone to pop in.

From exquisitely detailed embroidery pieces, to dramatic seascapes - and check out the stunning lobsters too - this is an exceptional gallery... highly recommended - a must visit destination, that never fails to impress.

31Bolt Tail

Scenic spot
Bolt Tail is a stunning headland located on the South Devon coastline, offering panoramic views of the Devonian coastline and the waterfront settlement of Hope Cove. It is a great spot for walkers to enjoy the South West Coast Path walk from Hope Cove, with opportunities to explore wooded areas near Inner Hope Cove and take in breathtaking views around Bigbury Bay. The mile-long cliff walk to South Milton Sands nearby also provides an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of the sea.
Amazing place to go for a walk or just for the view. You get an amazing view of both inner and outer Hope with lovely sunsets (on clear days, of course). It is often very windy on the upper part of the Bolt Tail, but it's lots of fun if you have a coat with a zipper because you can fly like those squirrels !! If you're lucky, you can also spot some dolphins from the end of the Bolt Tail and maybe even some tuna.
Benjamin — Google review
Beautiful walking trail with panoramic views of Hope Cove and adjacent headlands. Not exactly a made track, one needs to take care over tree roots and the cliff edges are not protected. Otherwise well worth the effort, dog friendly on leash.
P K — Google review
Wild and scenic headland walk out from Hope Cove around towards Bolberry Down. The footpaths start in a wooded area near Inner Hope Cove and lead up onto the headland, affording panoramic views around Bigbury Bay. The views from the end of the tail are amazing. There are the remains of an (iron age ?) fort and several paths that criss-cross through the bracken. There are also several decent sea fishing spots although the clamber down (and back up) can be "interesting". A beautiful and relaxing/wild location
Jeremy C — Google review
An incredibly picturesque coastal location to visit, grassy rolling hills and cliffs with very nice sea views back towards Hope Cove - Good as a destination when walking the cliff path from Thurlestone, or on the way to Salcombe. Just watch your step near the cliff edges, as the hills slope sharply down towards sheer drops in places. Keep your dogs under close control.

Beautiful views over the South West Coast. A short hike, but beware of wind and animal droppings (sheep roam here).

Park the car in the NT car park on the down and walk the huge coastal path loop into Hope Cove via Bolt Tail. The paths are extremely open and accessible and sweep through open grassland with the most scenic views on a clear blowsy day. Stay away from the very cliff edges for huge gusts of wind blowing up off the sea can catch you unaware. No tickets needed other than in the car park.
Rosalind C — Google review
Not too steep of a climb, and plenty of places to stop on the way up and down. Also great views from the top of Hope cove and Burgh Island. I believe it used to be some sort of hilltop fort.
