Lake Ohrid, located on the border between Albania and Macedonia, is a large ancient lake with a depth of 300m. It holds significant historical artifacts from the Turkish rule in the 18th century, including personal seals, weapons, and items related to prominent figures like the Robev family and Hristo Uzunov. The lake is also home to a unique aquatic ecosystem with over 200 endemic species.
Simply Stunning.........As our guide said if you come to Macedonia and dont visit Lake Ohrid, then you might as well skip Skopje, we would have to agree this was the highlight of our visit to the Balkans.

We're at this Lake Ohrid in late February this year. We took a cruise about an hour exploring the lake. After that we walked surrounding the area for souvenirs. There are many shops selling freshwater pearls.
Jamaliah S — Google review
Lake Ohrid is among the most visited places in North Macedonia, and for good reasons. It is simply captivating, from the bustling town of Ohrid to the magnificently blue and crystal clear waters of the lake. As one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, it is hard not to feel the influence the lake has on the surrounding area. With its unique ecosystem, impressive Byzantine-era structures, and UNESCO status, Ohrid city as well as Lake Ohrid are truly one of the Balkan region’s highlights. A boat cruise around the lake is much recommended, cos’ this is how you can watch can admire the stunning Ohrid city skyline, as well as see some of the buildings and structures perched on the hills by the side of the lake. An amazing experience indeed to be on the boat, cruising around the lake. Grateful to have arrived here, and wish to come again if I have the opportunity.

It’s a pearl of the region. Scenic views, awesome nature. This is the deepest and the oldest lake on Balkans. During our stay the weather changed every hour from heavy rain to sunny weather and than again rain… You can rent a boat and see it’s nature from the water.

The most ancient lake in Europe, situated on the border between the southwestern region of North Macedonia and eastern Albania. We were on the Albanian side. Encircled by mountains, the lake boasts pristine, crystal-clear waters. The serene ambiance of the lake, coupled with the breathtaking panoramic view of the encompassing mountains, offers a welcome respite from the demands of everyday busy life.
Niliam J — Google review
Lake Ohrid is a lovely serene place to recharge and relax away from busy city life. While the beaches are stone there were plenty of people enjoying the water. The water is clear and clean. Nice running trail around the lake with hikes. The old town is quaint and fun to explore

Bodies of Water
Nestled in the national parkland, Lake Prespa is a charming freshwater lake with an abundance of flora and fauna. This ancient lake, formed around 5 million years ago due to tectonic activity, is situated at the tripoint of Macedonia, Albania, and Greece. Fed by both surface and underwater springs, it boasts a unique ecosystem that has led to the continuous speciation of various organisms.
Excellent place to visit. Kids friendly. Very easy parking. Friendly people.
Chris R — Google review
One of Europe’s oldest lakes: Lake Prespa is a tectonic lake dating back over a million years, sustained by ongoing tectonic subsidence that prevents it from filling in—or “aging into a bog” as most lakes do . • High-altitude lake: It’s one of the highest tectonic lakes in the Balkans, sitting at about 853 m above sea level . • Connected water systems: Water from Great Prespa drains underground into Lake Ohrid, about 150 m lower in elevation—a remarkable hydrological connection . Biodiversity Hotspot • Ecological diversity: The area boasts a dazzling 2,000 species of plants and animals, including around 50 endemic animals and 19 endemic plants, plus over 200 bird species—and several endemic fish species unique to the lake and the Balkans . • Birdlife haven: Home to the world’s largest Dalmatian pelican colony, along with populations of Great White Pelicans and Pygmy Cormorants. Over 1300 pairs of Dalmatian pelicans alone have been recorded . • Rich fauna beyond birds: The Albanian side alone hosts over 25 bat species—including Europe’s largest population of long-fingered bats—23 reptile species, and 11 amphibians such as Hermann’s tortoise and fire salamander . • Endemic fish: Of the 11 native fish species, nine are endemic—like the Prespa barbel and Prespa trout—and there’s even a freshwater sponge found only here. Conservation & Transboundary Significance • Protected on multiple levels: The region features national parks in all three countries, is a Ramsar Wetland site, and in 2014 it was added to UNESCO’s Ohrid-Prespa Transboundary Biosphere Reserve . Cultural & Historical Highlights • Ancient heritage: On the small island of Mal Grad (Albania) lies a 14th-century cave church—St. Mary’s Church—founded in 1369 by the Serbian noble Kesar Novak, featuring frescoes and Greek inscriptions . • Ancient remnants underwater: Archaeological diving projects have revealed artifacts dating back approximately 3,100 years on the lakebed .

The lake is situated in a pictoresque place. It is suitable for people who like to rest in such villages that are not full of tourists and fond of nature. We have seen it on 10 June in Resen opstina. You can see on photo.

Very long time ago since I was there for the last time. A beautiful place. Less spectacular than the Ohrid lake, but way less developed and polluted. water is about 4 degrees Celsius colder than in the Ohrid lake so less suitable for swimming.

National Park Galicica is a nature lover's paradise located around Mount Galicica, offering rugged hiking and biking trails that provide stunning views of the vast Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. The park's peaks rise to over 2,000 meters, ensuring breathtaking panoramic vistas of the lakes and surrounding towns. For those seeking an adrenaline rush, paragliding tandem tours offer a bird's-eye view of Ohrid.
Amazing park, all the park was full with snow, it's a must stop in the winter
Eran Z — Google review
I wish the google maps locations would be a bit better marked about where all those places are that people take photos of (gates, churches etc). We ended up on an unexpected hike. Don’t recommend unless it’s your plan and you know how to hike. But it was cool
Liisi — Google review
Though we were just passing through and stayed just one night the views from the top of the mountain were incredible. We paid to enter the national park at the end of the mountain road that descended to the lake and they accepted card. We stayed on the eastern side of the lake at the Divino Camperstop which had good facilities and is walking distance to Ohrid though we didn’t have time to stop there.

The Galicica NP is a mountain range standing between two major lakes in North Macedonia - Ohrid Lake and Prespa Lake. It's a popular hiking and biking place with many paths, but we used it as a shortcut on our drive to Greece. There's an entry fee of around 5 Euros to enter it. Hair pin curves and several places to stop high up to admire both lakes. Road generally in good condition with some potholes, so do take care.
Dejan B — Google review
The whole mountain was burnt down very recently. There was a strong smell of smoke when I went there. Very unpleasant experience, certainly not worth the 5€ entrance fee. One would pay not to go there.
Dragan V — Google review
So sad how the national park is being turned into a landfill site of construction waste originating from the less than beautiful new holiday homes and hotels that are replacing the traditional stone houses. Thoughtless people are ruining the architectural and natural heritage.... 😢
Erik T — Google review
Great park with some nice hiking and beaufitul driving through the mountains. The road is not too steep and quite wide, compared to many roads in Albania. There are some potholes but there is enough space to go around. Entrance fee was 200 MKD, collected at the bottom. Payment was cash or credit card.

The church showcases centuries-old religious art and Byzantine-style architecture, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts. Along with other notable churches in Ohrid like St. John, St.
The staff are super friendly and welcoming. The church is well kept - though it resembles a concert hall inside. Any digital camera lense will enhance the old paintings and frescos seen on the ancient walls. The acoustics are excellent inside. The display of souvenirs inside are tasteful and very pretty and well priced.

Nestled in the picturesque town of Ohrid, The Church of St. Sophia stands as a beacon of historical significance and architectural grandeur. The Church of St. Sophia is renowned for its miraculous survival through tumultuous times. Despite the Ottoman conquest, which saw many churches converted into mosques, St. Sophia retained much of its original structure and artistry. This resilience makes it not only a testament to the past but an enduring symbol of cultural identity and spiritual continuity. As visitors wander through its hallowed halls today, they are enveloped in a serene ambiance, where history and spirituality converge. The Church of St. Sophia continues to inspire awe and reverence, inviting travelers to delve into the rich tapestry of Ohrid's past. Indeed, a good experience to be here.

A truly beautiful church with an incredible atmosphere. The lady working there was very kind and even let us in without charging an entrance fee. Such a peaceful and impressive place, definitely a must-visit in Ohrid.
Aleksandra M — Google review
This is beautifully restored. Extremely high ceiling with exposed beams and fabulous frescoes on sections of the walls and ceiling. Very quiet inside so you have space to be alone with your prayers and thoughts. On the back outside wall of the church where there is seating on steps you can just see under some brick work ancient paintings on the walls. And the highlight is in the garden I discovered to my delight 4 turtles 🐢💚

Beautiful old bizantine church. No entrance fee. Nice surroundings with beautiful tree outside the church. Peaceful and very interesting to visit. In the hours that we visit around 14:00-15:00 wasn't so crowded. Definitely worth seeing it.
Daklea B — Google review
The church of such rich history and architectural significance. It was basilica that turned into orthodox churc that turned into mosque and back to church. The traces of those turns can be seen on the walls of the church. It's also one of the rare surviving churches from the time before the split of Christianity. The good thing is that there's a plaque inside in English depicting the church history.

Nestled within the stunning Galichica National Park, Mount Magaro is a hiker's paradise that promises breathtaking vistas over both Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. This moderately challenging hike spans about three and a half hours round trip, beginning at an elevation of 1,600 meters amidst tranquil forests before transitioning into picturesque alpine meadows. As you ascend to the peak at 2,255 meters, you'll be rewarded with sweeping panoramas that include views of Albania and Greece on clear days.
What a beautiful hike, even in foggy/cloudy conditions. It took us roughly 2:30 hrs from starting point to top and back with breaks in between.

Vuk M — Google review
Great adventure with stunning view on the oldest lake in Europe, Ohrid Lake and the beautiful Prespa lake, in the same time
Alek G — Google review
Having no previous mountain-climbing experience as such (although extensive experience from hiking and navigating difficult, rocky terrain) we discovered that the climb to the peak was no ordinary hike, and for example adequate shoes with a better grip would definitely have been in order. The descent along the steep mountain side near the huge billboard can be quite tricky. The ascend is also demanding and if you are not used to hiking it may be too much, or at least you may be in for a very strenuous endurance workout. The climb however is worth the effort if you are capable of it. The views on Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa and the hills/valleys between them are magnificent, and this trail might still be one of the easiest options out there if you want to be able to say that you have climbed an actual mountain. The trail is very well-marked and you will manage even without GPS.

(Translated by Google) The highest peak in the Galicica range. Paid trip to Galicica National Park. At the beginning of the road there is a barrier where a park employee charges a small fee. The trail starts from the Lipova Livada pass. The route has attractive views, is well marked and is not very demanding. However, on a hot day it can be quite tiring because it leads almost all the time through exposed terrain. During the hike, there is a place where you can admire two lakes at the same time: Ohrid and Prespa. We met only one tourist on the entire route. (Original) Najwyższy szczyt w paśmie Galiczica. Wyjazd do Parku Narodowego Galiczica płatny.

(Translated by Google) It's a nice, doable hike, but don't choose the 50-minute route up, but the 1-hour route. The 50-minute route is very steep, the other is more comfortable. We slipped 3-4 times on the way down, nothing serious, but you can count on it because the gravel around is slippery. (Original) Kellemesem teljesíthető túra, de ne az 50 perces utat válaszd felfele hanem az 1 orásat. Az 50 perces út nagyon meredek a másik kényelmesebb. (Translated by Google) It was challenging, but we managed despite our limited experience. The views from the summit were worth the effort; for me, the descent was more challenging, especially due to the strong wind. We entered through the national park, for a fee. We arrived shortly after 5 a.m., and there was no guard yet, nor were the barriers closed. Upon exit, we paid 100 (Macedonian currency) per person and 500 per car. The Old Bazaar in Skopje is a lively and colorful area, showcasing the Ottoman architectural style with its mosques, markets, shops, and cafes. Visitors can immerse themselves in the city's culture by exploring museums like The National Archeology & Ethnology Museum and The Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art. Walking along the Kaldrma roads, also known as Sampietrini to foreigners, offers a glimpse into traditional Skopje with antique shops and quaint cafes.
The Old Bazaar in Skopje is a must-see destination filled with history, vibrant culture, and lively atmosphere. Wandering through the cobbled streets and maze-like alleys, you’ll discover everything from traditional shops and galleries to cozy coffee houses and excellent restaurants. The architecture blends Ottoman and Byzantine styles, with highlights like the Mustafa Pasha Mosque and historic inns, fully immersing visitors in centuries of heritage. Shopping here is a real experience—local vendors offer handmade crafts, antiques, and souvenirs at very reasonable prices. As you explore, the scent of grilled kebabs, fresh bread, and Turkish coffee fills the air. The area is also known for its friendly service and rich blend of Macedonian and Albanian cultures. The bazaar is not just about commerce; it’s a center for cultural events, nightlife, and people-watching. Whether you visit early in the morning for a quiet stroll or at sunset to see the stone streets glowing under golden lights, you’ll be captivated by the energy and charm of this part of Skopje. It’s well worth dedicating 2-3hours to truly soak it all in.
Hynek — Google review
The Old Bazaar in Skopje Old Town is a place that could be a charming dive into the city’s Ottoman past, but it ends up being an overwhelming and uncomfortable experience. The architecture is undeniably interesting, with its narrow cobblestone streets, old stone buildings, and remnants of a bygone era that give it a certain historical allure. The preserved shops, caravanserais, and traditional facades offer a glimpse into Skopje’s past, and for history buffs, this could be a highlight. However, the atmosphere is marred by issues that make it hard to enjoy. The area is overcrowded with gypsies, some of whom engage in persistent begging that feels intrusive and, at times, intimidating. This detracts significantly from the experience, turning a leisurely walk into a stressful navigation through constant solicitations. Additionally, the strong presence of Muslim culture, including frequent calls to prayer echoing from what feels like countless mosques, can be jarring for visitors not accustomed to it. While this is part of the area’s cultural fabric, the sheer volume and intensity can feel overwhelming, especially when combined with the chaotic crowds. The bazaar’s authenticity is a double-edged sword—it’s vibrant and bustling, but the lack of order and the aggressive street interactions make it feel less like a cultural gem and more like a disorganized mess. The absence of visible efforts to manage the crowds or maintain a welcoming environment for tourists only adds to the frustration. For every moment of architectural charm, there’s an equal dose of discomfort that makes the visit feel like a chore. In short, the Old Bazaar has the potential to be a fascinating stop in Skopje, but the intrusive begging and relentless noise from nearby mosques make it far less appealing. It’s a shame, as the historical elements deserve better presentation.
Hristiyan V — Google review
The Old Bazaar in Skopje was an unforgettable experience that truly captured the charm and spirit of the city. Walking through its narrow cobbled streets, I felt surrounded by history, with Ottoman-era architecture, old inns, and beautiful mosques creating a unique and timeless atmosphere. The blend of cultures and traditions gave the place a vibrant and authentic character. I loved browsing the small shops filled with traditional crafts, jewelry, and souvenirs, and the aroma of local food and coffee made the visit even more delightful. The lively yet welcoming atmosphere made it easy to spend hours exploring. The Old Bazaar was a perfect mix of history, culture, and everyday life—a highlight of my trip to Skopje.
Mohsin R — Google review
historic marketplace that has been a hub of trade and culture since the Ottoman period. Lined with mosques, hammams, and artisan shops, it blends Eastern and Western influences, offering a vibrant glimpse into the city’s multicultural past and living traditions. Enjoy walking and around but be aware - on Sunday only few shops and restaurants are open, most of the shops are closed.
Matej S — Google review
Visiting this place is like taking a trip back in time. It is one of the largest and oldest bazaars in the Balkans, dating back to the 12th century. The narrow cobblestone streets are filled with Ottoman-era architecture. The atmosphere is vibrant, full of craft shops, jewelers, cafes and restaurants. I found it great for a stroll, buying simple souvenirs and soaking up a genuine atmosphere.
Luana B — Google review
A very interesting place, calm and vibrant in the same time. Worth to give it some time, both during daytime and in the evening, not only for shopping or having a beer or a coffee, but for a slow walk, to enjoy its history and spirit.
Pirvu I — Google review
Charming bazar with great food, but watch the weather Visited on 26 October 2025 and spent about 2 hours exploring and trying food. The Old Bazar is a cute, small, historic area full of character, with lots of different things to try — perfect for wandering, taking in the architecture, and sampling local treats. We especially enjoyed some lokma at Lokmades Skopje, which was absolutely delicious! It was a bit rainy during our visit, and some roads had standing water due to poor drainage, so I’d suggest visiting on sunny days for a more comfortable experience. Overall, a must-visit spot for those wanting a taste of traditional Skopje and local flavors. ✅ Recommended.
Enrei P — Google review
Lovely area with an oriental charm and cozy cobbled streets. The atmosphere is warm and picturesque, especially in the evening with all the lights. It does feel quite touristy, though, and not exactly a must-see. Still, worth a short visit if you’re nearby.

Restaurant
Irish Pub Saint Patrick in Skopje offers a unique experience with its authentic Emerald Isle interior and a view of the Art Bridge. The pub features live music, a riverfront outdoor terrace, and a Victorian railway-themed decor. It is known for serving Guinness beers on tap and providing high-quality service. Visitors can enjoy bar food, watch sports matches, and experience the vibrant nightlife scene in the city center.
Visiting the city and popped in as we all wanted the Irish breakfast served until 1 pm, unfortunately it had just turned 1pm but the staff agreed to make us them. They arrived quickly and were really, really good, we all enjoyed them. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the service was excellent. We found the prices very reasonable and will be visiting again before we leave. Highly recommend. Many thanks.

I did eat THE pizza here. So I came back for other dishes and I am very happy with the cuisine here. Since it's a bar I did expect more beer choices and I wasn't let down. The service is nice and friendly.
Емилија С — Google review
The beer is great, but the service needs improvement. The whole place smells like smoke — you should really use an air freshener or better ventilation. Overall, good beer, but the service and atmosphere could be much better.

The bar was best all Macenodia i think. Excellent services, helpfull staff, delicious meal, unforgetable drinks was there. The bar has great armospher and decoration. Live football match, free wifi, inexpensive menu etc. very nice. I will miss the place. Thanks for everything....
Eşref ( — Google review
I ordered a chicken steak with mushrooms and fries, but it was served with different sides than what the menu stated. When I pointed it out, they said the menu had changed. I sent the dish back, but the replacement arrived cold, dried out, and completely bland. On top of that, the service was dead slow. Overall, a very disappointing experience — I would not recommend.
Yaswanth K — Google review
Multiple screens showing all of the football matches. Staff are also happy to make sure there’s a screen showing the game you want at your request. Prices reasonable and staff friendly. Guinness is just over a fiver. Can get local beers for couple of quid. Got a burrito that was also about a fiver and did the job.
George K — Google review
The waitress Anna Maria is the only good person in the pub.the other waiters treat you as animals or enemies.service is slow. We ordered french fries with cheese, but it was cold. We ordered sausage plate, the sausages were covered with plastic kind of gelatin, when we asked the male waiter if it was normal or not.He answered in a scolding manner, he was very very rude. Beers are good.prices are reasonable.atmosphere is good.but waiters are bad except for Anna Maria.
FULYA K — Google review
A decent Irish themed pub with draught Guinness (8/10). Terrace is kind of enclosed, and it’s a shame there is no real outdoor seating, because the location is fantastic, just opposite the old bridge. Service was efficient a friendly, and it gets busy enough for a bit of atmosphere, although at around 10pm on a Thursday, it certainly wasn’t crowded. It’s a big bar! They have screens and show sports also.

Worst customer service. Non professional workers like the blonde cashier and the cleaner!!! They don’t know how to deal with CUSTOMERS!! Worthless

Not very organized petrol station. Almost always this petrol station is very busy and with a big crowd. This is thanks to to the many customers that are traveling to the near border, but nevertheless, the manager should be aware of this and employ more people. Or suggest expansion of the petrol station. Otherwise, the station is well supplied. However, if you can, fill your tank in other petrol station if you don't want to wait in line and lose valuable time.

If you're looking for a breathtaking thrill, paragliding tandem flights Ohrid is the place to go. The views are quite simply stunning, and the staff is professional and helpful. It's definitely one of the highlights of your trip to Macedonia!
We were a bit apprehensive about taking our two kids (ages 9 and 11) paragliding, but it turned out to be the highlight of our trip! From the moment we booked online, the communication was fantastic. The included transport was a lifesaver, and the safety briefing was thorough and put us at ease. The views were simply breathtaking, and our kids were amazed to see the world from above. We even got to enjoy a complimentary SUP ride afterwards, which was a perfect way to cool off.
Ivona O — Google review
This was a truly breath-taking experience. Our pilots (both called Sasha) were clearly very experienced and made us feel safe when we were nervous, having never done something like this before. In hindsight, the precarious drive up through the national park to the takeoff site is probably the scariest part- the actual flight is very relaxing. The go-pro video and photos were an extra €10 but definitely worth it. The 1hr free paddle boarding at a beach bar afterwards was a fun added bonus and a great place to grab drinks/lunch. Would highly recommend!
Hannah — Google review
My paragliding experience here was super fun and exciting! The instructors were friendly, professional, and made me feel safe and comfortable. The view was absolutely stunning, which made the whole experience even more memorable. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to try paragliding!

My friends and I were looking for an adrenaline rush during our trip to Ohrid, and this paragliding tour delivered! The booking process was a breeze, and the included transport picked us up right on time. The safety measures were top-notch, and the pilots were incredibly experienced and friendly. The flight itself was exhilarating, with stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. We even got a discount on other activities, like diving , which we enjoyed the next day. Highly recommended for any group of friends seeking an unforgettable adventure!

We did Paragliding as a birthday gift and it was such an amazing experience! From start to finish the kindness was warming! We got picked up from our hotel outside of Ohrid & we took the jeep there up the mountains. Offroad as they said! Such a gorgeous view. Instructors were kind and very confident, so we felt comfortable throughout. The experience itself is breathtaking - feeling free, seeing the world from a different view. I would for sure do this again!

What an unforgettable experience! We had amazing weather, which made us stay up for over an hour, flying over the beautiful Galičica NP. It was crazy to see that we were the only ones in the sky that day. Thank you to the team and in particular the two Sasha’s that went with me up the mountain!

Flying with a paraglider has always been a dream of mine, and this experience did not disappoint! Women's Beach is a charming lakeside spot located by Lake Ohrid. The gray sandy beach offers good swimming conditions and is equipped with sun loungers, al fresco bars, and restaurants. While the ground may feel a bit unusual for about 30 meters, once you swim across it, you'll find proper sandy and clear waters.
Superb beach by Lake Ohrid. The grounds feels a bit “funny” for around 30 meters but that is less of an issue if you just swim across it. Then you will be on proper sandy waters and clear ones at that! There are some options for sunbeds around. Some charge 250 MKD per bed while there is one establishment that gives you 1200 MKD worth of credit if you pay that amount for one of their sunbeds. You can then use the credit to get food and drinks from them. Clear water, dining options, nice people, what is not to like? It is super busy in weekends though.

For a 70/80s Yugoslav vibe, relax & chill here at the army beach. Public access, you DO NOT have pay as some misleading gossips suggest. Crystal clear buoyant water. So good for swimming. Sandy Beach. Lovely grassed area adjacent. Put down a towel, snooze, swim, chill. Mich better than the touristed area. A real escape. For the conossiour who might like to experience what a Yugoslav beach was like in the 70/80s. Note - restaurant no longer functioning for the public (July 2025). Cafe on beach front operates 8.00 to 20.00. 50 denar for a macchiato. Such a great spot!
