Garden
The Athens National Garden is a historic park featuring native and exotic plants, as well as archaeological remains and a children's library. Situated on the south coast of Attica, it offers a peaceful atmosphere with secluded romantic corners. The garden is just one of many must-see sites in Athens, including the Acropolis, Mount Parnitha National Park, Diomidous Botanical Garden, Monastiraki Flea Market, and more.
This should be part of any tourist tour. It's hard to describe such a beautifully green space in the middle of the city. Pathways are clean and easy to walk. We had no plans going in and did not have a set time to visit. This might be the way to properly visit as we didn't rush ourselves and had time to enjoy a beer in the gardens as well. There are maps everywhere so it's almost impossible to get lost even without any knowledge of the area. Nice spot with a few animals as well, great for the kids. We entered from one end, exited on the other side, went back in and finished our tour. Definitely worth stopping by for a visit.

While exploring Athens, I visited the National Garden. As it was a sunny Sunday, it was very popular but dealt with the crowds well, and there is plenty of space to find a quiet corner. It’s very well looked after, and features an array of beautiful trees, flowers and more. There were also a variety of animals throughout the park, including goats, a variety of birds and fish, as well as terrapins. It’s absolutely worth setting aside an hour to explore this beautifully kept garden - entry is free and there is plenty of shade to escape the heat of the day.
Joel P — Google review
If you need a break from exploring the city, Athens' National Gardens is a tranquil place to put your feet up. I spent a little time there relaxing and listening to bird song. And when you're ready to go, the Syntagma Square subway station is just a few feet away from the entrance.
JJ G — Google review
It's doing repairs on the streets nearby, so be careful. The gardens were nice quite and calming on a very busy day. I enjoyed watching the families strolling throughout the gardens.
General D — Google review
The park is large, with lot's of routes to meander through. A lot of the animal cages are empty and derelict, which gives a sad vibe of days long gone. The enormes ring necked parakeet or monk parakeet nests add to this feeling. A non domestic and invasive species that has taken over a lot of the trees in the park, see the pictures. A point of warning are the many, quick and quiet mosquitos. We wore shorts in the 25 degrees Celsius, and paid the price. We got stung more then ten times each during our walk. So... a mixed bag, not to be undertaken without some mosquito repellent. Oh yes, and the turtles... we thought the big water was were the turtles where housed originally. But they are in a very small and enclosed pond, with high walls and nowhere to go. And they have been there for at least a year, judging from the photo of Kondtantina in another review down here. They're about 50 of them, give ore take, with no plants and no room. It's a very sad sight, and in my opinion animal torture. Sorry to be so blunt about it.
Martijn V — Google review
The National Garden of Athens is a true oasis in the heart of the city – and we absolutely loved it! 🌿 It’s the perfect place to take a break from the busy streets and enjoy some peace and shade under tall trees and along beautiful walking paths. What makes it even more special for families is that it’s not just a park – it’s also great fun for kids! There are a few playgrounds, plenty of open space to run around, and even a small animal area with goats, birds, and other animals that children find fascinating. 🐐🦆 Everything is beautifully kept, and the garden feels safe, clean, and relaxing. Whether you’re looking for a quiet place to sit, a fun stop for the kids, or just a scenic walk, this is a spot you shouldn’t miss while in Athens. Free to enter, easy to reach, and perfect for all ages – we highly recommend it!
Bobana P — Google review
A must visit if you're in Athens. The place is a little confusing, but just search for a map or check Google. There's only specific spots where you can enter/exit and take a look at the specific markings of the map - that's where you'll find unique sets of animals just chilling.
Paul T — Google review
Athens National Garden is spectacular. We spent a couple of hours meandering through. There are many species of trees, some really large and old. I am sure it is very beautiful in May and June with many types of flowers and bushes blooming. There is a great children's playground and library. There is a zoo type area with a few animals and lots of birds. There are many nesting parrots in the trees above this area. They have built very large communal nests. There is a pond with ducks and geese. There is also a small pool with turtles. You can also see Roman ruins and a mosaic floor that was discovered as the garden was established. You find maps throughout the park to indicate where you are. There are also benches throughout the garden. Most of the garden is shaded which is wonderful on a hot summer day. I didn't see any public restrooms.

Park
Stavros Niarchos Park is a vibrant green space located near the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center, just south of Athens. This modern park, opened in 2015, offers landscaped walking paths, a playground, and ample room for sports and recreational activities. Despite its distance from the city center, visitors can easily reach the park via tram or a free shuttle service from Syntagma.
Approaching this building from the park in a ‘promenade to a temple’ way is breathtaking. You get to the top almost without realizing how high you are. The view of the acropolis, the coast, and other islands complete the experience. Not to mention the assured sophistication of Piano’s design in the whole building.
Matias C — Google review
Beautiful park with flawless view over the city of Athens. Great place for walk, jogging, relaxing, picnics, reading a book. Many benches and there is room on the roof and piano in it. Just perfect. Library in the basement and fountain show usually each half an hour.
Shadow B — Google review
An incredibly beautiful park with spectacular views of Athens. Highly recommend as a place to bring your kids. Locals love it and rightly so. The architecture and the landscapeing are truly inspired.
Spyro M — Google review
Quite stunning park with lots of families enjoying the sunshine & flat spaces for bikes. The Cafe is very popular with lots of tables outside, more inside & a takeaway area at the front. The pool gives a sense of coolness even on a hot day.
Peter E — Google review
Its a beautiful place, the library is the best section, the view to Athens its amazing and you can watch the Acropolis from there.
Cristian J — Google review
An architectural milestone and a wonderful park located in Faliron, Athens. The planted olive trees match the environment of Greece and the from this location one has view of the sea. This area is used for events, book reading or simply walking. It is recommended also in summer months especially at night.

Urban park with olive groves & trails around a series of lakes, plus cafes & a small stone church.
A big beautiful park. Good for walking, running, cycling and picnic.
Mihail S — Google review
It's a lovely park with numerous trails ideal for walking, cycling, running, and children's play. There are also lakes connected by an artificial river. The park includes two cafeterias and two churches. Many areas are perfect for family picnics. However, some facilities require maintenance and attention. Overall, it's a delightful city escape.
Panos M — Google review
Needs some work, but I think people is mostly the reason of it's bad state.. it seems like noone actually cares a lot to keep their garbage controlled. And there is often some groups that claim a place to do a private party for their children but when they leave there is confetti and plastic waste everywhere.
AstoXoC ( — Google review
The Antonis Tritsis Environmental Awareness Park in the western Athenian suburb of Ilion is all set for a second chance. The park was completed in 1996, cost 5 billion drachmas (or around 150 million euros) to develop and covers an area of 110 hectares, or seven times that of the National Garden in central Athens. Bordering the less affluent areas of Ilion, Kamatero and Aghioi Anargyroi, the Antonis Tritsis Park is a green oasis, featuring woods, artificial lakes and plenty of open spaces for kicking around a ball, cycling or just taking in the sun. However, following its brilliant inauguration, the park fell into a state of neglect, having been continually bumped further and further down the funding priority list.
Theocharis S — Google review
Lovely park for exercise or just taking a walk. Plenty of shade and benches for picnics or just hanging out. The ducks and turtles everywhere are lovely. And if you're lucky you may get to see the horses. Not much shade if you're walking, running or biking. Make sure u have water and a hat in the summer. Not sure if or where the bathrooms are. But there are multiple cafes around so that may be your best bet for bathrooms. All in all lovely park.
Simone F — Google review
The park is almost abandoned to its own fate. Some structural improvements have been made the past years but with less impact to its overall aspect. However, the park retains its beauty and it worth one to visit it.
Nassos K — Google review
A beautiful park with lots of greenery. It's equiped with many benches where you can sit to eat, some small cafes to take a break and refresh yourself. Perfect for exercising, having a picnic with friends or just taking a walk to admire the trees and the lake which is home to many turtles, ducks and other animals. All in all I was very impressed. For its immense size it's a very well kept park and even has dedicated firemen to take care of it.

Pnyx, an ancient hilltop assembly place in Athens, was where the democratic assemblies of the city took place. It could accommodate around 15,000 men during the 5th Century BC gatherings. This open-air meeting place witnessed influential orators like Aristides, Demosthenes, Pericles and Themistocles delivering speeches that shaped democratic thinking.
Excellent place to watch the Athens especially the Acropolis. The routes are organized and various. You can easily walk to the top in around 15 to 20 min. Free entrance. Highly recommend it!!!
Frank Y — Google review
Excellent spot for sunset. The view of the Acropolis is stunning, but the view of the sea is even better (in my humble opinion).
Maryna G — Google review
First stop for us on visiting Athens- due to a teenager fixated with ancient Greece and studying politics! Great and unexpected views, alongside what some would call the origin of democracy (albeit not particularly democratic!).
N S — Google review
I wouldn't call it a hidden gem as its frequently on top things to see in Athens however I think this can be easily over looked. You can get some spectacular views of Athens from here and is a wonderful spot to watch the sun set. You can also find some nice spots to see the Acropolis. Don't forget to check out Socrates prison thats in the park as well :)
Taran J — Google review
Very nice park with great view of the acropolis. No tickets are needed!
Ronnie A — Google review
I came after a long walk to see this. Historically it is another thing to see apart from Acropolis. It is the the symbol of Democracy. People in the early. 5th BC gathered here and they made all those speeches. Nowadays there is not much to see but if you look at the size of the area and imagine it a bit , I am sure you will enjoy the scene.
Mustafa A — Google review
Outstanding place for a moment of quiet in an olive grove with fantastic views of Athens and the Acropolis. Easy walk uphill, water fountain near the top. Free access, near an unused observatory. Remains of Πνυχ described and explained. Highly recommend as a spot for a bit of contemplation and relative solitude. Picnicking not allowed. Dogs OK on leash.
Joan C — Google review
My favourite place. I love a picnic while overlooking the city of Athens as well as the acropolis. Can be a bit windy sometimes so by extra careful with your trash and of course cigarettes. Please help us keep this place tidy of you visit

Lookouts
Mount Lycabettus, also known as Lykavitos Hill, is a prominent limestone peak in Athens that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the Aegean Sea. Visitors can reach the summit through a leisurely ascent on a funicular or by hiking through pine-scented pathways. The iconic Chapel of St. George awaits at the top, making it an ideal spot for nature enthusiasts, hikers, and photography enthusiasts.
What a view from here just stunning. Well worth the walk up. There a lovely bar about 2/3 of the way up. Ice cold drinks and do good, amazing view of the Acropolis from the bar as well.
Audra H — Google review
There are two trails. Looking from Acropolis the left one is way easier. It goes through the forest. The right one is paved, but seems longer and is steaper. The view is great, though for the view of Acropolis I would suggest Hill of the Muses, where the Socrates prison is. Less people, closer to the Parthenon.
Dorotėja V — Google review
Amazing view, a bit of a hike though. Be prepared to get a bit hot and sweaty. Definitely worth it though. This is probably the best view of Athens
Frank H — Google review
I would say, its a better and more beautiful view of athens compared to the acropolis! We took the funicular, which us not the most sustained. Make sure to select a proper time for better view. There are also Cafe on top.
Mahmood A — Google review
For. The. View. Wow. Looks daunting to get up, but disappointingly easy in terms of challenge and distance. Great view up top. For seeing the acropolis, mid afternoon not a great time as you get the glare from the sea.

The highest point in Athens, with a funicular railway from bottom to top. Spectacular! Toilets, a lovely church and a bar at the top.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is a modern and inspiring cultural hub in Athens. It houses the Greek National Opera and the National Library of Greece, surrounded by expansive landscaped gardens. Renzo Piano's visionary design transformed a once barren wasteland into a lush hill offering breathtaking views of the city and the Aegean Sea. The center hosts cultural performances, art exhibitions, and provides a tranquil urban oasis for visitors.
A great addition to the Athens cultural scene - and the coastline too. Marvelous park, stunning architecture. The National Library space is very welcoming, with plenty of natural light, and it was so wonderful to see it very busy. The 'living room' upstairs offers a great relaxing space with a variety of interesting books and amazing views of the city and the sea. Absolutely worth a visit!
John S — Google review
A perfect combination of a Mediterranean garden and a world-class cultural center. It boasts stunning views of Athens and Piraeus, and at its heart lies a unexpected surprise: a peaceful grove of olive trees and a golden wheat field, creating a beautiful patch of countryside in the middle of the city.
Emmanuel G — Google review
Exceptional place, a must visit in Piräus. Walk in a park that is planted at the roof of the gigantic green building complex housing the greek Opera, the national library and a parking house. On top changing Art shows in and outside the building.
Christian B — Google review
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens is absolutely stunning — truly majestic in every sense. Everything here is so beautifully designed and perfectly maintained that it almost feels like a modern utopia. From the architecture to the gardens, every detail reflects world-class quality and care. Whether you’re going for a peaceful walk by the canal, looking for a quiet spot to study, or just want to relax and enjoy the sea breeze, this place is simply amazing. The blend of nature, art, and open space makes it one of the most inspiring public places in Europe. The complex hosts the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera, alongside spacious green areas, cafés, and panoramic viewpoints over Athens and the sea. It’s a masterpiece of contemporary architecture — elegant, sustainable, and full of life. World-class for sure. If you’re in Athens, don’t miss it.

The most amazing place with dazzling views of the city. Don't miss this stop in Athens. Love the beautiful architecture and library, fascinating exhibits, gorgeous garden, and stunning performances in the piano room. The music, fountain, and light show is a real treat. It's a delight to spend time there.

Renzo Piano's building is a real a treat! Amazing to walk on its gardens. We went with the whole family and visited the top first, the gardens and then at last the library. One of the kids ended up discovering a very nice book and the other two had a chess match! I highly recommend it if you are into architecture!

Upon arrival at the bus stop closest to Stavros Niarchos Park, we took a short walk and were at the pool next to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. It was indeed a sight to behold. Instead of taking the direct route via the pool to the National Library of Greece, we took the “scenic route” up to the Cultural Center – via the garden and park next to it. Once inside the garden, we noticed that there were different plants around – just like Gardens by the Bay in Singapore. There was also a huge green field which we think would be where events were held. This morning, there were some early-risers doing Yoga here... Zappeion Garden is a serene oasis located in the heart of Athens, adjacent to Syntagma Square. The garden features tree-filled pathways, statues, and a charming fountain, creating a picturesque setting in front of the historic Zappeio Hall. Adjacent to the National Garden, this lush green space offers a peaceful retreat with its beautiful trees and flowerbeds.
The Zappeion Historic Garden is a magical setting in the heart of Athens, ideal for vibrant market exhibitions. It brings together young creators and producers with buyers in a joyful, relaxed atmosphere. Under the golden afternoon sun and into the velvet night, visitors enjoy music, local flavors, creativity, and community in one of the city’s most iconic gardens.

Zappeion Garden is a peaceful oasis right in the heart of Athens. It’s the perfect place to take a relaxing walk, enjoy nature, and escape the city’s noise for a while. The garden is beautifully maintained, with shaded pathways, fountains, and elegant neoclassical architecture surrounding it. I especially loved how close it is to major landmarks like the National Garden, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, and Syntagma Square, everything feels connected yet calm. There’s also a lovely café inside where you can sit under the trees and enjoy a coffee or light meal. Whether you’re looking for a quiet morning stroll or an afternoon break after sightseeing, Zappeion Garden is one of the most charming and refreshing spots in Athens.

A nice little garden to escape the busyness of the city. A big space to walk around, but not too much shade (the national garden is better for this). Either way an interesting place, beautiful views of the mountains.

The Zappeion Garden is a beautiful and historically significant public park in the heart of Athens, often considered an extension of the adjacent National Garden. It's a serene oasis blending nature, history, and art. Situated between the National Gardens and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Zappeion Gardens cover approximately 14 hectares (35 acres) of planted and paved areas. It's easily accessible from Syntagma Square. The centerpiece of the garden is the imposing Zappeion Hall, a neoclassical building designed by Danish architect Theophil Hansen and opened in 1888. It was the first building in the world specifically constructed for the revival of the modern Olympic Games. Funded by the philanthropist Evangelis Zappas (hence the name), it served as the main fencing hall during the 1896 Summer Olympics and later as the Olympic Village for the 1906 Intercalated Games. Today, it functions as a conference and exhibition center, hosting various official and public meetings, ceremonies, and cultural events. The gardens feature shady, tree-lined promenades, winding paths, and a diverse collection of trees and plants. A notable feature is the impressive fountain in the center of the garden square in front of the Zappeion Hall, donated by the American company Ulen, which was responsible for the Marathon Dam's construction. Throughout the gardens, you'll find numerous statues and sculptures, adding an artistic touch to the natural surroundings. The Zappeion Gardens are a popular spot for both locals and visitors to enjoy a refreshing walk, relax amidst nature, and escape the city's hustle and bustle. There's also a popular café, restaurant, and Athens' oldest open-air cinema, Aigli, adjacent to the Zappeion. In essence, the Zappeion Garden offers a blend of historical grandeur, architectural beauty, and a peaceful green space, making it a significant landmark and a beloved public area in Athens.

Very nice - located in the heart of Athens, it is a lovely spot for a quiet walk / rest. Very picturesque.

Great area to escape the hustle and bustle of Athens for some tranquility. The gardens are not particularly well maintained or as lush as they once were, looking at some of the older reviews. We visited in May and the lawns were already dried out and brown, the water fountain was not working either. That said the Jacaranda tree blossom was a sight to behold.

Philopappos Hill, also known as the Hill of the Muses, is a small peak located opposite the Acropolis in Athens. It is connected to surrounding hills and features a network of paths for hikers to explore. The hill serves as a green oasis in the heart of Athens and boasts significant archaeological finds. Additionally, it is home to the Acropolis-Philopappos Project by architect Dimitris Pikionis, recognized as a monument of world architectural heritage.
One of the best hills in Athens to see all the city around. Especially early morning, fantastic view and quiet place to meditate. I think Plato and Socrates were here many times. You should see it.
Devran S — Google review
It’s a beautiful area to walk through, with a forest-like setting and stunning views over Athens. However, I wouldn’t recommend visiting in the morning during summer months like August—it was extremely hot, almost empty, and the walk involves many hills. There’s only one small kiosk at the entrance for snacks, so come prepared.
Eman M — Google review
One of the best spots to see the Acropolis view. You’ll need to walk a bit, but the path is filled with street performers and beautiful scenery. You might even spot some turtles having a family argument on the mountain trail. Also, Socrates’ prison is along the way and definitely worth a stop. The uphill walk can be tiring, so good shoes are a must
Sertaç G — Google review
Some of the best views in Athens are from this hill and even better, it's very easy to walk up. I highly recommend going around sunset time, a sunset from this hill is splendid. Take your time here, walk around the grounds, visit the prison of Socrates.
James C — Google review
Really great walk to have a wonderful view on athen, the acropole, the see, etc. You will also learn history in a fun way and see different landmarks. Lot of different vegetation allows a nice walk where you can either hide in the shadows of an Oliver or shine in the sun. Just a wonderful walk without too much efforts.
Starchi7 — Google review
This Hill is annexed to Acropolis and major interchange stop for Hop on-Off Buses. There is a Prison of Socrates there. It takes 10 minutes walk up the top of the hill where you can have magnificent 360 degree views of Athens and beyond. Worth the hiking (60 - 70 degree steep)

Walking through Philopappos Hill felt like stepping into ancient nobility. The peaceful paths, olive trees, and marble ruins made me feel as if I were one of the Athenian aristocrats from centuries ago. From the top, the view of the Acropolis and the city is breathtaking — quiet, timeless, and full of grace.

Athens is a walking city and taking a walk/hike up this hill is worth it! It was lovely to experience being on the hill top towards sunset! Great views and a nice place to just relax for a little. Several different trails to take and easy to walk, but rocky on top, so watch your step!

The Acropolis in Athens is a must-see for families, especially if kids are familiar with Greek mythology. A visit to the city center should include a climb up the rocky Acropolis hill and a stop at the new Acropolis museum. Nearby attractions like the temple of Zeus and Plaka neighborhood offer more historical and cultural experiences. The city also boasts other notable sites such as The Oracle at Delphi, Ancient Agora, Monastiraki, Meteora, and more.
The Acropolis is a must see and the best historical site available in Athens in my opinion. We spent close to 3 hours exploring everything. There are educational signs throughout explaining what you are seeing and often with drawings depicting what it would have looked like when newly built. The views of Athens are amazing. You can see all the way to the sea. Look up occasionally and watch the birds wheeling in the sky. There is a constant breeze on the upper side which is wonderful in July. I would recommend close toed shoes with good tread. Lots of rock and uneven spots. Not appropriate for a stroller. There is an elevator on the North side for people with disabilities. Bathrooms are only located at the base. One complaint is that you do not find out that areas are closed until you get to them. There were not any signs alerting to a change.

This was a beautiful experience! I will warn you that there’s a lot of steps… so be prepared! Right now Greece is SO hot that you need to go early in the morning. We waited until 6 PM to go and it was a bit unbearable! Bring lots of water with you, and wear really sturdy shoes for climbing hills. (I saw a lady bring walking sticks… And that was incredibly smart on her part!) But it’s too amazing to miss, it’s one of those iconic landmarks that is a must see! So even if you can only go in the evening, still go! The walkway is a bit slippery going uphill, but coming back down, you do a different route… And thankfully that wasn’t slippery at all.

The Acropolis – A Once-in-a-Lifetime Dream in Athens Finally, I got to visit the Acropolis in Greece — and it honestly still feels like a dream. To stand on this ancient site, surrounded by the legacy of the Greek Empire, was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. 🏛️ The architecture & history: The temples, the ruins, the sheer scale of the place… it blows you away. The history here is so rich, you can feel it in every stone. We even explored the Theater of Dionysus (Temple of Music), which was incredible to see in person. 🌄 The views: From the top, you get a panoramic view of Athens — the entire city spreads out beneath you, framed by olive groves and historic landmarks. 🕰️ The experience: The Acropolis is huge — we spent more than half a day there and still felt like we only scratched the surface. There are so many temples, paths, and corners to explore, each with its own story. Tip: The stones are slippery from all the tourist traffic, so take care when walking. Honestly, with how many people visit, I wouldn’t be surprised if one day access becomes more restricted — so if you have the chance, go while you can. ✨ Final thought: Visiting the Acropolis is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The history, the architecture, the views — all of it makes this site a must-see if you’re ever in Greece. Strongly recommend.

Wow. This was one of the best ancient visits on our cruise. We were here ten yrs ago and so much improved. Definitely want to visit. We came on a cloudy day which actually was better as the sun can cook you while surrounded by marble buildings and walkways.

Is the most important symbol of ancient Greece and an impressive UNESCO site, home to famous temples such as the Parthenon, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. It offers spectacular views of Athens. A visit is unforgettable, especially at sunrise or sunset. I recommend buying tickets online to skip the line and to visit it in the afternoon (around 5pm).
Melek B — Google review
I am shocked! What an experience. This is something that I highly recommend when stopping by in Athens, Greece! I also took a tour guide, which I felt like if I were to stroll around, I would have felt to curious and want to explore more than the scenery, and this decision was excellent. I had the most in-depth and fun tour ever completed with a stop at the Acropolis Museum. Please, for your safety, check weather when visiting the Acropolis! This is because during summer (the touristy months June + August) there are not many spots of shade on the journey/ climb up to the Pantheon. So it is vital to stay hydrated, and to bring a fan (whether electric or classic fan). As a conclusion, enjoy this wonderful site, completely timeless and rich with culture and history. I highly recommend to get a tour guide, and to stay safe through your journey up the Acropolis! Anyways enjoy the fellow photos taken by me and make sure to drop a like if you wish!

Exploring the main attractions in Athens is truly a remarkable experience. One can be captivated by the ancient structures, which stand as testaments to a rich history. Syntagma Square is the vibrant heart of Athens, where history and culture converge in a lively atmosphere. This expansive, tree-lined square features charming cafes and park benches, making it an ideal spot to relax. Dominating the landscape is the Hellenic Parliament building, where visitors can marvel at the ceremonial Changing of the Guard performed by evzones in their striking traditional attire.
Pretty busy square located in the center of Athens. This place will most likely be your first attraction you see in Athens after getting down from the X95 Airport Bus. There are some amazing photo angles up on the stairs looking towards the city. You can also enjoy a full view of the Hellenic Parliament (Former Royal Palace). Make sure to check out the "changing-of-the-guards" event at the Hellenic Parliament every hour!

A beautiful and lively part of Athens. I went in August; there was live music and plenty of both tourists and locals enjoying the ambience. Very busy but amazing vibes! In front of the parliament and near beautiful hotels. The metro station is right here, as well as bus stops going to the airport and other destinations. In the daytime, there’s also places to sit down in the shade when it’s hot.

Syntagma Square and Ermou Street form the vibrant heart of Athens and are absolutely worth a visit, especially during the late afternoon hours when the heat begins to ease. Syntagma is not only historically important—with the Parliament building and the famous Changing of the Guard ceremony—but also a great starting point for exploring the city. Right next to it, Ermou Street stretches out as one of Athens' busiest shopping streets, lined with a fantastic mix of international brands, Greek fashion stores, and small boutiques. Whether you're looking for clothes, shoes, souvenirs, or just browsing, there’s something for everyone. The street is pedestrian-friendly and shaded in some parts, making it a pleasant walk even in warm weather. There are also plenty of cafes, bakeries, and juice bars along the way if you need to cool off with a drink or grab a quick bite. Street performers and local musicians often add to the lively atmosphere, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. If you're visiting Athens, this area should definitely be on your list—great for shopping, relaxing, people-watching, and feeling the energy of the city. It's where ancient charm meets modern Athenian life.

The man-made Aesthetic Forest within Hymettus features an olive grove and a small vineyard with Santorini grapes.
A still relatively unscathed forest next to Athens. Luckily wildfires haven't touched this place due to he proximity to the capital. Suitable for walking, hiking and some sightseeing.

The forest is very very very high, you can see mountain lycabettus for example as a very tiny thing from there. You can reach the start point of it from Athens by bus, but there you should walk for hours to reach the top. I have been walking today for 6 hours to reach the top since I haven't a clear plan to reach. You MUST know the exact routes that you should take before you go. Its risky at night since there are no police nor security. In terms of animals, you will only see only the huge turtles which I am uploading a picture of it here. It is very nice to walk and climb until reaching the top, but the most important thing is to have a specific and clear plan for where to go. It is one of the best places to go in Athens :))

Breatthtaking place just outside the Athens. You can reach it by a bus from Syntagma square - 224. Than expect a 1 hour hike to the monastery. However you will be able to walk for much longer if you want as there are many pathes all over there. We have met dozens of turtles on our way. The best time to visit is April and May as you will be stunned by the presence of flowers and herbs.

Strefi Hill, located in the Exarcheia neighborhood of Athens, is a hidden gem offering a rustic green space and panoramic views of the city. This lesser-known hilltop viewpoint provides a peaceful spot to enjoy sunset views, with the Acropolis on one side and the sun setting behind the mountains on the other. It's a favorite hangout for locals who come here to relax and take in the scenery.
This unassuming little hill has, possibly, the best view in Athens. You're high enough to see above the rooftops, but low enough to feel Lycabettus looming above, and the Acropolis is clearly visible over those rooftops. There is a lot of graffiti (this is quite a gritty, politically vocal area) and it's not as pretty as the more famous hills, but it is well worth the visit and obviously very much loved by its locals.

Honestly an amazing hill to go up. Don’t be intimidated by the photos because it is not too high and it is a pretty easy hike. It is very calm and beautiful up at the top with beautiful views. Unfortunately some miserable humans decide it’s fine to litter their cans of drinks up at the top. As you explore Filopappou Hill, you'll discover that it provides one of the best vantage points for capturing breathtaking photos of the Acropolis.
The best place to view the acropolis. The rock on the ledge allows for some great photos however hard it might be to keep balance. It is a great spot with a clear view of the acropolis and a nice monument to admire. However it is a bit hard to find as the park is hard to navigate and also a bit hard to climb as there are steep slopes and many steps to climb. Overall it is well worth the trouble to get up there.

Beautiful. I went in the afternoon so it was super warm.. But I bought my ticket via the official website days before and just had to wait until it was the time on the ticket and could walk in easily! It is busy while waiting but every hour a whole group goes up!
Amber J — Google review
A couple of things to know before you go: 1. A long walk to the top but not as bad as expected. A considerable amount of stairs, but enjoyable. The granite at the top is very slippery—watch out. 2. Very limited bathrooms. There are no restrooms at the top. The ones at the bottom are insufficient for the amount of people. 3. We went at 5 PM to avoid the heat. It was pleasant at the top with a good breeze. I’d recommend the later time slots as the low sun makes for better pictures. 4. I bought my tickets the day before. The earlier time slots were sold out. It seemed that people were buying tickets onsite, so you don’t necessarily need a reservation. A must-go while in Athens. Better than expected.
Aaron — Google review
Visiting the Acropolis was honestly one of the highlights of my trip to Athens. No matter how many pictures you’ve seen, nothing really prepares you for standing up there in person. The view over the city is incredible — you can see the whole of Athens stretching out below, with the sea glimmering in the distance. I went early in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds, and that was definitely the right move. Climbing up is not too hard, but wear comfy shoes and bring water — the stones can be slippery. Once you reach the top, the Parthenon and the other ancient temples feel almost unreal. You can actually feel the history around you, it’s crazy to think how long these structures have been standing. The atmosphere is peaceful, especially if you take a moment to just sit and look around. The Acropolis Museum nearby is also worth a visit — it’s modern, cool, and helps you understand what you’re seeing up there. Overall, it’s an absolute must-see in Athens. Go early, take your time, and enjoy the view — it’s one of those experiences that truly stays with you. 🇬🇷✨

Visiting the Acropolis of Athens is truly an unforgettable experience. Standing at the top of the city, this ancient site radiates beauty, power, and timeless majesty. The view from above is breathtaking — you can see all of Athens stretching out below, while the Parthenon and other temples remind you of the city’s glorious past. Every stone seems to tell a story of art, philosophy, and civilization. The architecture is simply magnificent, especially when the sunlight hits the marble and turns it golden. Whether you love history, culture, or just want to feel inspired, the Acropolis is a place that leaves you in awe. A must-see destination that captures the heart and spirit of Greece.

I'll give it 5 stars because this place is simply stunning and definitely worth a visit! From the top, you'll have a breathtaking panorama of the entire city. The temples at the top are undergoing renovation, but they're still magnificent! However, the entrance fee of 30 euros per person is too high for these sites! There are so many tourists and the sun is scorching and there are no restrooms or water for sale inside. It's a pity the caves below can't be visited.

As you explore this iconic venue, you'll be captivated by its impressive architecture and the echoes of cheering crowds from centuries past.
We passed by this original Olympic stadium in the evening and did a proper visit a few days later. Did some poses on the mock up podium, did some races (have bragging rights that we ran in the Olympic stadium!) and also popped by the small museum with the Olympic posters and torches. It’s worth a visit

Impressive. This place is incredible. I’m in awe of the history and beauty of the marble/ walking the tunnel feels surreal. Like you are part of something so much bigger than you know. If you arrive at 7am, they will let you in to run laps before opening. You have to promise to pay later. The site of the first modern Olympic Games.
Linkin W — Google review
Amazing structure and a neat place to visit! If you are athletic, you might as well take a run around the Olympic stadium and feel like an Olympian Athlete! We ventured up the stadium and sat like a spectator and watched other visitors do the running around for us. Don't forget to stop in the mini museum. It has several of the old Olympic flame torches and photos. This place was packed in its glory days!
Lisa K — Google review
Great historical site. Still relevant to today with the Olympic spirit. Small museum and included in €10 entrance fee is a self guided audio presentation which highlights interesting facts. Easy access with buses. If you visit on a hot day bring sunglasses and a hat. Two kiosks near entrance with drinks and snacks.Definitely highly recommended
Carlos O — Google review
a super cool attraction with great views from the top!! it is built entirely of marble and some of the stairs are quite steep so definitely tread carefully. the museum is a fantastic addition with lots of interesting information!!
Lily C — Google review
Just excellent. Easily the best €10 we've spent in Greece. Get up early, be there for opening at 8am - no, seriously - and run round THE Olympic Stadium track. Then take the brilliant audio tour that guides you round this incredible place. The museum with every Olympic torch was a real surprise and the views across to the Acropolis are great. Sitting at the top of the stadium and looking down on where so much Olympic history started is really cool.
Paul S — Google review
An incredible piece of history — and truly impressive in person! Standing in an all-marble stadium where the first modern Olympics were held is a unique experience. The architecture is grand, and walking around the track or climbing the seats gives you a real sense of the place. Definitely recommended.
Tóth Á — Google review
With just one full day in Athens, visiting the Panathenaic Stadium was at the top of my list -and it did not disappoint. The architecture is breathtaking, built entirely from marble and designed to transport you back to ancient times. Knowing it once held over 80,000 spectators -from everyday citizens to royalty -made standing there even more awe-inspiring. The entrance fee is €10, but with my UK student ID I was able to enter for €5. Inside, the vaulted passage showcases fascinating artifacts from the very first Olympic Games to more recent ones, including medals and torches from across the generations. I even ran a little race on the track (while chasing my hat that kept flying off in the wind!) -a playful and memorable moment that made the visit even more special. Totally recommend adding this stop to your Athens adventure;it’s history, culture, and fun all in one.

The Ancient Agora of Athens is a significant historical site located northwest of the Acropolis. It served as a meeting place for the city council and local residents, playing a pivotal role in the early days of democracy. The Stoa of Attalos, an impressive marble structure built in 159 BC, stands as a testament to its rich history. This large square was not only an administrative and political center but also a hub for cultural and commercial activities dating back to the 6th century BC.
We absolutely adored our visit to the Ancient Agora. There was plenty of space to roam around (without feeling crowded by tourists) and the Temple of Hephaestus was just stunning. We were especially in awe when we could glimpse the sun peeking through a hole in the ceiling structure — magnificent! In addition, there is a museum on-site (included). We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Ancient Agora of Athens!
Serena J — Google review
This is a fabulous place to visit in Athens. It is moderately priced and quite extensive. The buildings are well preserved and the museum is quite interesting with beautiful pottery and other artifacts. On the balcony of the museum are interesting busts and below are detailed sculptures. To see the entire enclosure plan for 1-2 hours. There are steps to navigate. Bring water, although there are vending machines near the church. I highly recommend a visit.
Rodger H — Google review
The park is big enough that even with a few groups of people milling about, it felt like my wife and I were on our own. 100% would recommend. If you find a good bench, you can enjoy the peace and quiet. While enjoying the beautiful views of the acropolis. The archeological sites is beautiful as well. The museum is included in the ticket and is a short walk through. The Temple of Hephaistos is my highlight for sure! Watch out for the wildlife👀
Zach K — Google review
We visited the Ancient Agora on the first Sunday of November, so entry was free! I’d recommend using the audio guide to truly appreciate the rich history behind the ruins. The site offers amazing photo points of the Acropolis and is just a short walk from Thissio station — the main entrance is on that side. Don’t miss the Temple of Hephaestus and the Stoa of Attalos museum inside. Wear comfy shoes and carry water, as there’s quite a bit of walking. We even spotted several turtles roaming around the site — our kids had so much fun watching them! There are lovely cafés and the Athinaion Park just outside, perfect for a relaxing break after exploring. A peaceful, family-friendly place where you can really feel the ancient spirit of Athens. Definitely worth spending half a day or more here!
Parul A — Google review
This was a great experience! The whole territory, not just the temple. You can refill you water bottle, use bathrooms - for me it's always important that a site has well maintained facilties. And not so many people. Since we couldn't get into the Acropolis top (because of the ticketing system and unavailability to buy tickets on site), this place was actually even better at the end. And with the great views. Just a small note - the church on site is closed.
Nate W — Google review
Well worth a visit. It houses the only intact preserved ancient temple- the Temple of Hephaestus. There is also a well maintained, modern museum with interesting displays and insightful information. It is a great way to soak up some of Ancient Greece without the crowds you get at the Parthenon. The reason I only gave it 4-stars is I felt the entrance fee of €20 per person was a bit steep.
Deb B — Google review
Athens is all about ancient ruins and this is definitely worth the visit! Lots of cats and turtles which made it even more fun to visit. There is a museum built in the style of what was suspected to have been the original building full of ancient artifacts. Very neat experience! And of course the temple that is neatly intact! I suggest buying tickets in advance and then you can just walk in and get your e-ticket scanned otherwise the line at the ticket booth can be quite long. Expect to spend a good couple hours here!

The Ancient Agora of Athens is a mesmerizing window into classical Greece, where democracy, philosophy, and trade once thrived. Walking through its ruins and the beautifully restored Stoa of Attalos, you can vividly imagine ancient Athenians debating and exchanging ideas. A truly enriching experience blending history, culture, and timeless wisdom.

Zappeion Hall, constructed in 1888 by Danish architect Theophilus Hansen, was the first building specifically built for the modern Olympic Games. This neoclassical structure with a Corinthian facade has hosted various events, from Olympic fencing to political and cultural gatherings. Its grand architecture reflects Greece's 19th-century cultural revival. Adjacent to the National Gardens, this venue is a must-see in Athens.
We organised a company event at Zappeion Hall and it was an unforgettable experience. The venue is stunning — full of history, elegant architecture and beautiful surroundings right in the heart of Athens. The layout is perfect for both formal and informal gatherings, with plenty of space for networking, presentations and social activities. Our team and guests were impressed by the unique atmosphere. Highly recommended for any corporate or cultural event!
Abdelilah A — Google review
The Zappeion is located inside the National Garden of Athens, a neoclassical building now used as a congress and exhibition center. Even without going inside, the exterior is truly impressive and perfect for taking some beautiful photos, as you can see below. On a very hot day, stepping into the colonnade and central courtyard with the dome was surprisingly refreshing: the breeze flowing through the columns creates a unique cooling effect. It’s definitely worth stopping by, both for the architectural beauty and for a brief moment of freshness, as well as to enjoy the nearby fountain.
Ciro B — Google review
I didn’t get the chance to go inside Zappelin, but the building is stunning from the outside! Make sure to look up at the roof the architecture is really impressive. It’s also a historic spot, as it’s where Greece signed the agreement to join the European Union. Even just from the outside, it’s definitely worth a visit!
Hussiny E — Google review
Gorgeous space and venue to rent. The guy who founded it has his head buried in the wall, which is cool. The entryway columns make for a gorgeous backdrop at the golden hour. And there’s a green space in front where dogs play, which is nice to watch!

The Holy Monastery of Kaisariani is a medieval monastery situated over early Christian ruins and an ancient shrine to the goddess Aphrodite. Nestled in a forest at the foot of Mount Hymettos, it offers a serene escape from the city, just a short bus ride away from Athens. The surrounding parkland is filled with pine trees, cypresses, Mediterranean shrubs, and fragrant flowers.
We drove to visit this site - there was additional parking available as the road curved away from the Monastery. There was a WC available between the Monastery and additional parking lot, too. There is a sign and you have to carefully walk down some stone steps to reach it. The site was lovely and worth visiting! If you come, also check out the Taxiarches Hill Panoramic Viewpoint - you have to walk a little uphill to reach it but it is paved and lovely!
Ryan S — Google review
Peaceful and beautiful monastery with well-preserved architecture and fresco paintings. 5 Euro entrance ticket. We took the bus from downtown (Rte 224) and then it’s about a 40min walk along road/hiking to get to the monastery. Make sure to check out the lovely viewpoint just ~200m away!

I was not aware of this special place….with all the nice things to do in Athens….it has been a wonderful discovery. You can arriva by walk on Ymittos mountain (but you need to be well trained and equipped) or by car. Ticket is 5 EUR (June 2025). Inside very nice to see the church, the kitchens, the rooms….

A good idea for a visit. Relatively near Athens. You can visit Kaisiariani church and botanical garden. Excellent panoramic view to Athens !! Ticket price euro 3 per adult.
Erricos A — Google review
Quiet and beautiful monastery in a nice area for walking and enjoying the view on Athens. Compared to the bustling acropolis this is heaven. You're free to walk into the different buildings, the kitchen, the eating quarters, the sleeping cells and the nicely decorated little church. You can park on the adjacent road or a little bit further on a parking area. Admission is 2€.

Historical place
Areopagus Hill, also known as Mars Hill, is a historic site in Athens that served as the high court of appeal for judicial cases in ancient Greece. It offers stunning views of the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, and the Temple of Hephaestus. According to Greek mythology, it was where Ares stood trial for murder. Additionally, it's famous for being the place where Apostle Paul delivered a sermon and converted Dionysus to Christianity.
This place is beautiful and offers an amazing view of the city. There is no cost to enter. You can see the Acropolis behind you. In front you see Hadriens Library and the Agora Market. Sunset is amazing from here. There are metal stairs to reach the rock. Rocks are at multiple levels so easy to find a spot to enjoy the view or watch the sunset. Rocks are very uneven and some spots are slippery because the stone is worn so smooth. Shoes with good tread are best.
April W — Google review
The best view of Athens, especially stunning at sunset. Perfect spot for amazing photos, plenty of people but still enough space for everyone. A truly Instagrammable place!
Dmitry G — Google review
Wow, we visited the site where the Areopagite Council met (also a court for certain cases) and where the Apostle Paul gave his famous sermon in Athens about their unknown God. It is just to the left of the path to the Acropolis and should not be missed. Beautiful view and location. Be aware of your footing as the hill is worn and slick.
Forrest T — Google review
This is a stunning place, especially at sunset, with gorgeous views of the city. Access is free, but the way to climb up is very rocky and uneven. The atmosphere was amazing in August; everyone was spending time with friends and family and having a good time :) . If you’re here in the summer, it will be too hot to go here in the afternoon, so go here in the morning or evening. Areopagus Hill is right next to the acropolis.
Noemi — Google review
Areopagus Hill is a must-visit when you’re near the Acropolis. The climb is short, and from the top you get one of the best views of the Parthenon, Athens cityscape, and the sunset. It’s a popular spot but still feels peaceful, especially in the evening. The rocks can be slippery, so wear good shoes. Bring a drink or snack and enjoy the view — it’s one of the best free experiences in Athens.
Carlos R — Google review
Absolutely gorgeous The name "Areooagus Hill luterally means" Hill of Ares (the Greek God of War) Hugly recommend to climp this hill. View is incredible.over rhe Athens. I went there from Thissio side and way up was ok.

Come early in the morning and you'll have it to yourself, possibly not worth it if it's busy, better views of the Acropolis are available from the Pynx, but this is a very important site and if you are here, love history then walk up

Awesome view of the acropolis and athens! Beautiful soothing place in the morning! My favorite in the city! Just found out this is where St Paul delivered his sermon to the Athenians, as per the book Acts of the Apostles in the Bible.
