Bodies of Water
Lake Ohrid, located on the border between Albania and Macedonia, is a large ancient lake with a depth of 300m. It holds significant historical artifacts from the Turkish rule in the 18th century, including personal seals, weapons, and items related to prominent figures like the Robev family and Hristo Uzunov. The lake is also home to a unique aquatic ecosystem with over 200 endemic species.
Simply Stunning.........As our guide said if you come to Macedonia and dont visit Lake Ohrid, then you might as well skip Skopje, we would have to agree this was the highlight of our visit to the Balkans.

We're at this Lake Ohrid in late February this year. We took a cruise about an hour exploring the lake. After that we walked surrounding the area for souvenirs. There are many shops selling freshwater pearls.
Jamaliah S — Google review
Lake Ohrid is among the most visited places in North Macedonia, and for good reasons. It is simply captivating, from the bustling town of Ohrid to the magnificently blue and crystal clear waters of the lake. As one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, it is hard not to feel the influence the lake has on the surrounding area. With its unique ecosystem, impressive Byzantine-era structures, and UNESCO status, Ohrid city as well as Lake Ohrid are truly one of the Balkan region’s highlights. A boat cruise around the lake is much recommended, cos’ this is how you can watch can admire the stunning Ohrid city skyline, as well as see some of the buildings and structures perched on the hills by the side of the lake. An amazing experience indeed to be on the boat, cruising around the lake. Grateful to have arrived here, and wish to come again if I have the opportunity.

It’s a pearl of the region. Scenic views, awesome nature. This is the deepest and the oldest lake on Balkans. During our stay the weather changed every hour from heavy rain to sunny weather and than again rain… You can rent a boat and see it’s nature from the water.
Elena * — Google review
The most ancient lake in Europe, situated on the border between the southwestern region of North Macedonia and eastern Albania. We were on the Albanian side. Encircled by mountains, the lake boasts pristine, crystal-clear waters. The serene ambiance of the lake, coupled with the breathtaking panoramic view of the encompassing mountains, offers a welcome respite from the demands of everyday busy life.
Niliam J — Google review
Lake Ohrid is a lovely serene place to recharge and relax away from busy city life. While the beaches are stone there were plenty of people enjoying the water. The water is clear and clean. Nice running trail around the lake with hikes. The old town is quaint and fun to explore

The Church of Saint Sophia is a significant Macedonian Orthodox Church located in the heart of Ohrid's Old Town. Dating back to the 9th century, it has undergone multiple renovations and rebuilds due to historical transitions. The church showcases centuries-old religious art and Byzantine-style architecture, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts. Along with other notable churches in Ohrid like St. John, St.
The staff are super friendly and welcoming. The church is well kept - though it resembles a concert hall inside. Any digital camera lense will enhance the old paintings and frescos seen on the ancient walls. The acoustics are excellent inside. The display of souvenirs inside are tasteful and very pretty and well priced.

Nestled in the picturesque town of Ohrid, The Church of St. Sophia stands as a beacon of historical significance and architectural grandeur. The Church of St. Sophia is renowned for its miraculous survival through tumultuous times. Despite the Ottoman conquest, which saw many churches converted into mosques, St. Sophia retained much of its original structure and artistry. This resilience makes it not only a testament to the past but an enduring symbol of cultural identity and spiritual continuity. As visitors wander through its hallowed halls today, they are enveloped in a serene ambiance, where history and spirituality converge. The Church of St. Sophia continues to inspire awe and reverence, inviting travelers to delve into the rich tapestry of Ohrid's past. Indeed, a good experience to be here.

A truly beautiful church with an incredible atmosphere. The lady working there was very kind and even let us in without charging an entrance fee. Such a peaceful and impressive place, definitely a must-visit in Ohrid.
Aleksandra M — Google review
This is beautifully restored. Extremely high ceiling with exposed beams and fabulous frescoes on sections of the walls and ceiling. Very quiet inside so you have space to be alone with your prayers and thoughts. On the back outside wall of the church where there is seating on steps you can just see under some brick work ancient paintings on the walls. And the highlight is in the garden I discovered to my delight 4 turtles 🐢💚

Beautiful old bizantine church. No entrance fee. Nice surroundings with beautiful tree outside the church. Peaceful and very interesting to visit. In the hours that we visit around 14:00-15:00 wasn't so crowded. Definitely worth seeing it.
Daklea B — Google review
The church of such rich history and architectural significance. It was basilica that turned into orthodox churc that turned into mosque and back to church. The traces of those turns can be seen on the walls of the church. It's also one of the rare surviving churches from the time before the split of Christianity. The good thing is that there's a plaque inside in English depicting the church history.

This beautiful Orthodox church overlooks Lake Ohrid and is a popular tourist destination. It features beautiful Armenian and Byzantine architecture, as well as ancient frescoes. The church is open to the public, and there are picnic areas nearby where you can enjoy the stunning view of the lake.
One of the most iconic sights in Ohrid, perched on a cliff above the lake with breathtaking views. The small church is full of history and charm, and the setting is simply magical, especially at sunset. Entrance is 2.5€. A must-visit and one of the most photographed places in North Macedonia. Very crowded too
Aleksandra M — Google review
A tiny church, with more to see outside than inside. We paid the 150MKD to enter but it isn't really worth it. Just walk along from town and enjoy the spectacular scenery outside and you will have justified the effort. The views to the north and south are amazing and the iconic photo from above is special...... just make sure you ascend from the fortress rather, or pass on your way up rather than giving yourself extra climbing steps 🤣
Idris E — Google review
This is probably the region's postcard image, and rightly so. The church is perfectly positioned on a cliff above the lake. The walk to get there is well worth it, especially if you take the boardwalk. Entry to the garden surrounding the church is free and already offers spectacular views. I'm not sure, but I think you have to pay to enter the church itself. Either way, the view from the top is beautiful and makes for incredible photos.
Luana B — Google review
Beautiful boardwalk from the main city centre, past 3 beach areas, crowded every time I've been there, with restuarant. The walk to the top to the church is all up hill, but steps are good and solid, so walking is easy. For those with walking issues you may find it a bit more strenuous, but the steps are wide so you can stop to catch your breath if needed. No seats along the way. The Church is spectacular, and has been maintained well. The view is 2nd to none and worth the trip up. Consider having cash with you and catch a little boat back.
Joanne G — Google review
Such a magnificent spot. The view as you approach the church is great, as is the view at the church. You can climb up the cliff to get even better views over the church and out to the lake.

— Stunning architecture with an amazing view Spent about 1 hour visiting the Church of Saint Jovan along with a walk around the Old Town of Ohrid. The church is easily accessible by car and offers a beautiful combination of architecture and natural scenery. Perched on a hill overlooking the lake, the view is simply breathtaking — a true miracle of nature. The entrance fee was 3 € (a bit cheaper if paid in MKD), and it was worth every cent. Everything about the visit — the church, the hill, the lake view — was fantastic. ✅ Highly recommended for anyone visiting Ohrid.
Enrei P — Google review
The Church of Saint John the Theologian at Kaneo is beautifully situated on the edge of a cliff overlooking the beautiful Ohrid lake providing some stunning views and photo opportunities. A lovely walk along the boardwalk will take you up to the church. It is not wheelchair accessible and the steps could be an issue for those with walking difficulties. Beautiful location and well looked after.

Fortress
Perched atop a hill in Old Town Ohrid, Samuel's Fortress is a historic site shrouded in myth and mystery. Believed to have been built on an ancient fortress dating back to the 4th century BC, this stronghold offers panoramic views of the town, Lake Ohrid, and the surrounding mountains. Despite its current state of disrepair, visitors can explore the remaining outer wall structures, watch towers, and original gates for a glimpse into its former strategic significance.
One of the best sights in Ohrid. The entrance fee for Macedonians is 120 denars, and for foreigners it is 2.50€ if you pay in paper money or 3€ in coins. This place has a great history, originating from Ancient Macedonia. You can climb up to the walls, from where there is a beautiful view of the city and the lake. On the right side you can see the whole city, and on the left side there is a beautiful view of the lake. It is a pity that this place is only open until 4 p.m. From here you could watch the most beautiful sunset. A souvenir shop could also be made inside.
Spase M — Google review
Stunning old castle that offers a great 360 view of the city. Full of history, this fortress it's a great place to visit and learn about the history of this region, about the Bulgarian empire and Macedonian heritage. Big and strong walls that you can walk on them will make you feel that you are a medieval knight that defends this region. Also you can claim on the top of the defence towers that are still standing after all this time and history...
Alexandru S — Google review
This medieval fortress dominates the hilltop and is the city's great landmark. It's a mandatory walk to go up there, even if just to see it from the outside, as we did. The walls are impressive and appear very well restored, giving a clear idea of the place's history. The climb is a bit steep, but the view of the city and the lake from the base of the fortress is already fantastic. Access to the interior of the walls for exploration is paid.
Luana B — Google review
It's really nice, not too crowded. Tickets are not expensive. It would be great to have a place inside where you can buy souvenirs. The view of old town and a lake is the best one. From the fortress, you can go all the way along the shoreline through the forest. The city should invest more because they are now using probably just 20% of the possibilities. People calm, relaxed and friendl. It could be a bit cleaner around the fortress, and a lot more trash 🗑 is needed.
Mir D — Google review
The fortress offers nice panoramic views of Ohrid and the lake, but there isn’t much else to see inside, mostly just the walls. Entry is €3, and it’s worth a short visit if you enjoy viewpoints and walking along historic fortification. Old lady that works there is very friendly and kind
Aleksandra M — Google review
A little difficult to reach thanks to being on a hill but offers beautiful views. The entrance is fairly cheep too! Be careful about the slippery stairs tho!
Matyas A — Google review
The main attraction of the fortress is its walls, on which you can climb and have a great view over the city and the lake. The entrance is only 2.5 euros, but I saw many people entering without paying. From the fortress, there's a way through the forest to the church and then to the shore.
Alexandru I — Google review
Stunning castle offers a great 360 view of the city of Ohrid by allowing you access up onto the castle walls in certain sections. Sadly there is not much available information on site about the place but the ticket prices were negligibly low so it is no bother. I do however need to point out that the steps to get onto the castle walls are very steep and large steps so if you have issues walking it may be a challenge to get up there. There are several different routes you can use to walk up to the castle but all would be difficult for wheelchair users sadly due to the nature of the paths and stoney paved road.

Monastery Saint Naum is an Eastern Orthodox monastery that was established in 905 and is now open to the public, offering stunning views of the lake and live peacocks. It holds historical significance as it was where Saints Kliment and Naum, with the assistance of Bulgarian king Boris, developed the Cyrillic alphabet used in North Macedonia and neighboring countries.
This place is amazing. Starting from the beautiful park with natural streams and fountain. To the church and restaurant, to the amazing views at the beach and of course the amazing peacocks that live there. Also a great place to take many pictures of or just chill under the shadows of the trees. 🫰
Gaming C — Google review
The monastery is beautiful and definitely worth a visit. The entrance fee is €2.5, but we didn’t have to pay as they let us in for free. What felt strange to me is that everything around the monastery is a beach and swimming area, so people come into the monastery courtyard dressed inappropriately, loud and disrespectful. I believe this should be addressed in a better way for those who visit the monastery for spiritual reasons, so their peace is not disturbed
Aleksandra M — Google review
located at the bottom end of Lake Ohrid. free parking is available. plenty of gift shops and restaurants the monastery itself is nice and pleasant with some in frescos but isn't anything amazing. there is a nice beach area and the "springs" with boat trips.
John N — Google review
Really beautiful spot! There are a couple of nice places to walk around with multiple chapels on the property, all of which are lovely. Don’t miss St. Naum’s tomb where you can hear his heart beating 1100 years later. Also some great little shopping spots for Ohrid pearls and filigree art.
Christie F — Google review
Beautiful and fairly affordable to visit! Definitely warrants a full day trip to enjoy the whole area tho! You only pay the parking fee while entering by car. There are small shops with gifts, souvenirs, food/water and beach amenities. Two big restaurants and paid toilets by the entrance. The surroundings are beautiful and the history is also interesting. Make sure to visit before noon to enjoy it better with less people tho. If you plan to visit the sandy beaches too there are paid loungers at the main part of the monastery grounds, but if you want a more calmer environment you can go by the monastery, to the ‘’beach saint naum’’ where you pay an entrance fee but have a calmer beach in return. You can also try the boat tour around the crystal clear springs.
Matyas A — Google review
Beautiful place in Ohrid. It feels like you are living during the medieval times. The castle is still intact from the time it was built, it’s a place of it’s own. Some peacocks wander outside of the monastery, it’s possible to visit the inside of the monastery which is considered a sacred place, as sveti naum (saint naum) is buried there. Absolute banger
Dorian A — Google review
Such a lovely place & some great views over the lake. Just a shame the entry to the monastery was locked. Nice beach area too.
Steven A — Google review
A beautiful place near the lake, a bit of a walk for those with walking issues up on the stone path, but if you take it easy you will be fine. It's a very interesting and small place with some ancient frescos. The views over the lake are fantastic.

The Ancient Macedonian Theatre of Ohrid, dating back to around 200 BCE, is a remarkable open-air amphitheater that offers a glimpse into the region's rich history. Unlike most ancient theaters in North Macedonia, this one hails from Greek times, making it a rare and significant structure. While exploring the well-preserved stone steps and seating, visitors can envision the historical events that once took place here.
Nice ancient Roman theater that is still in use today. It was buried until 1980. It is well preserved. It has awesome view on town and lake. There is no entrance fee.
Ana J — Google review
It's free to visit and a good spot to see halfway up to the fortress on the top of the hill. The place has had a great historical, cultural, and archaeological value for the town. It requires better maintenance but still worth paying a visit.
Haris D — Google review
One of the most important landmarks in Ohrid, Macedonia. Amazing place full of history and one of the best preserved ancient theatre that I visit. I highly recommend it! 😉
Alexandru S — Google review
It's incredible to find an ancient theater from the Hellenistic period so well-preserved and in the middle of the city. The best part is that access is open and completely free. You can walk through the seating rows, sit, and imagine what the performances were like centuries ago. Besides its historical importance, the site also offers a beautiful view of the lower part of the city and the lake.
Luana B — Google review
What a gift to be able to use ancient spaces in your everyday life. Discovered by accident by a man digging, this large ancient theatre is not just a historical site, but hosts summer concerts. There's no fee to see it as its part of the everyday city.
Austin G — Google review
Lovely ancient theater. In terms of experience and looks it's nothing special, but all the side details do lift it up. Open 24/7, still used for concerts, you can walk the top as a shortcut road. It really is not just a monument, but also still a real part of the city.
Sanne B — Google review
4stars as it's free to wander around, and maybe why the unmanned place is rather messy, and looking rather rundown... But really, visitors need to be more respectful. It's well worth a look, as just a few mins walk from several other sights in the area. And a good place to have a lil sit down and rest! In there, or a bar/cafe overlooking it.
Carlos V — Google review
The Ancient Theatre of Lychnidos, located in the city of Ohrid in present-day North Macedonia, is the only known Hellenistic-style theatre in the country. It was built around 200 BC, during the Hellenistic period, when Greek cultural influence was strong throughout the Balkans following the campaigns of Alexander the Great. The theatre reflects both the architectural style and cultural values of that era, characterized by open-air performances, strong acoustics, and integration into the natural landscape. The exact identity of the builders is not recorded, but it is widely believed that the theatre was commissioned by the wealthy elite of Lychnidos, a flourishing city that served as a regional cultural and administrative center. Its placement between two hills—Gorni Saraj and Deboj—not only provided excellent acoustic conditions but also shielded the audience from strong winds. The theatre had a semi-circular orchestra and a tiered seating area, typical of Hellenistic design, with an estimated capacity for several thousand spectators. Originally, the theatre was used for dramatic performances and other public gatherings rooted in Greek traditions. However, after the Roman conquest of the region in the 2nd century BC, its function changed. The Romans adapted the theatre for gladiator fights and public executions, typical of Roman-style entertainment. Modifications were made to accommodate these spectacles, including safety barriers and structural changes to the stage and orchestra area. With the spread of Christianity in the 4th century AD, the theatre fell into disuse. As the new religion gained dominance, structures associated with pagan rituals or violent spectacles were abandoned or destroyed. Local residents began dismantling the theatre, using its stone blocks to build churches, basilicas, and other early Christian structures around Ohrid. Over time, the theatre was buried under layers of soil and debris and was eventually forgotten. The site remained hidden for centuries until its rediscovery in the 20th century. In 1935, during construction work in the area, parts of the theatre were accidentally uncovered. Systematic archaeological excavations began in 1959 and continued through the 1970s and 1980s. These excavations revealed the lower seating areas, sections of the orchestra, and several inscriptions in ancient Greek. Notably, some of the discovered stone blocks contained the names of people condemned to die in Roman games, evidence of the theatre’s transformation under Roman rule. In 2002, a major restoration effort was launched to stabilize the structure and make it suitable for public events. Today, the theatre is partially restored and serves as one of Ohrid’s most important cultural venues. It hosts performances during the annual Ohrid Summer Festival, including theatre, music, and dance, reconnecting the monument with its original artistic purpose. The Ancient Theatre of Lychnidos stands as a rare and valuable example of Hellenistic architecture in the Balkans. Its history—from a Greek cultural center to a Roman arena, then a forgotten ruin, and finally a modern performance venue—mirrors the broader historical transformations of the region over more than two millennia.

Perched on a hill overlooking Lake Ohrid, the Church of Saints Clement & Panteleimon is an ancient Byzantine church with a rich history and impressive architecture. It is believed to have been built on the site where the Glagolitic script, precursor to today's Cyrillic script, was created. The church's courtyard contains remnants of old structures and columns, adding to its archaeological significance.
Definitely the best place to see amazing sunset in Ohrid. It takes around 15 minutes to get here from the center. The entrance into the church is charged. We went there twice but somehow it was closed. But the outside view is more than enough. Amazing place.

The beautifully restored church of Saints Clement of Ohrid is a lovely place with some great photo opportunities of the surrounding areas. The church was rebuilt on the foundations of the old church which parts of can still be seen through installed glass viewing panels. The restored painted artwork inside is masterfully done showing the vibrant colours that once were. Old parts of the painted artwork can still be seen including some very beautiful mosaics. Lovely way to spend an hour.

I love churches, and the ones in Orthodox style are beautiful in my opinion. This church had a nice view of the lake and the exterior was breathtaking. There can't be pictures taken inside the church but let me tell you it was beautiful, restored pairings and nice interior. I definitely recommend visiting this church. The tickets also weren't so expensive. They were cheap.
Sára D — Google review
More interesting inside than the church of St John, but obviously doesn't have the location. Outside there's historical ruins, including the baptismal font and inside the frescos are renewed. Okay, so there not original, but the church has been carefully restored following the destruction during the rule of the Ottoman empire. Beneath your feet are the original foundations from nearly 1000 years ago. Overall probably the best church to pay to enter in Ohrid.
Idris E — Google review
A beautiful and historically important church built on the site where Saint Clement founded the first Slavic university. The atmosphere is peaceful, and the views over Ohrid are wonderful. Interesting to visit, entry is 3€

Ohrid it's the city of churches! I don't think I saw so many churches in a small arealike here! Maybe just in Nessebar, Bulgaria. The beautifully orthodox church of Saints Clement of Ohrid is a lovely and quiet place. This small but beautiful church was rebuilt on the foundations of the old church which parts of can still be seen through installed glass viewing panels. Inside you will find colorful orthodox paintings, some very old. The surroundings of the church are perfect for photos, because the church it's situated in a high place with a great 360 panoramic view especially of the lake.

The Church of Holy Mary Peryvleptos is a historic Byzantine church located in the old part of Ohrid, dating back to the 13th century. It is renowned for its elaborate wall murals depicting religious scenes, including original works by 13th-century painters from Thessaloniki. Often referred to as the Macedonian Sistine Chapel, this magnificent structure also houses a small collection of black and white photographs showcasing Ohrid during the Ottoman period.
As told by our guide of the old town. This church (and fresco interior) survived the great Ottoman purge, of the region, due to it being dedicated to Mary the mother of Jesus who is recognised in the Koran.

The church has beautiful frescoes and historic value, but sadly it feels neglected and not well maintained. I didn’t experience much spiritual atmosphere here, and was disappointed by the behavior of the staff. Entrance is €3

A small, but beautiful church with ancient paintings inside. On the outside are views of the town and lake and an icon gallery.

Beautiful artwork but very dark inside and hard to discern some of the images. Worth a stop on the way up or down to/from the fortress.

Quite close to Upper Gate, again a nice restored church which has nice views of old town and lake.
Hakan A — Google review
Very close to the Ancient Theatre of Ohrid, after walking up the steps to visit the area. Cost is 150 MKD per person and no pictures are allowed to be taken inside, it is forbidden. Built in 1295, the Holy Mother of God Peribleptos is one of the oldest churches in the town of Ohrid in southwestern Macedonia. The frescoes in the church include images from the Passion and the Gospels, the life of the Virgin Mary, and the life of John the Baptist. Most of the original frescoes have faded, but the overall picture is still there to see. Overall, worth a visit if in the area.

Take a walk on the narrow streets of Ohrid, Macedonia and you will find many small or large christian orthodox churches. The Virgin Mary Peribletos it's one of this beautiful churches. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary this church is very old and has beautiful frescoes. I really like it here.
Alexandru S — Google review
As of September 2025, this church is definitely open on Saturdays and Sundays. If Google says it is closed on weekends it is wrong. Very impressive restored frescoes! No pictures allowed, but in the niche to the right of the alter there is a character at the top (perhaps a straggly-haired counterculture Jesus) whose face almost looks cubist! It could be a strange restoration choice, but the level of abstraction in Orthodox art is really incredible. Highly recommended, and even on a busy weekend, not many people... maybe because of Google's wrong hours.

Kaneo is a small, rocky beach located on Lake Ohrid, offering visitors the chance to enjoy traditional seafood restaurants and a swimming platform. The city of Ohrid boasts several renowned beaches such as Kaneo beach, Cuba libre beach, and Labino beach. Additionally, some luxury 4-star hotels in Ohrid have their own beaches and offer amenities like fitness centers. Visitors can also explore the fusion of Byzantine and Armenian architectural styles at an ancient church overlooking the lake.
such a nice beach. 1 sunbed with an umbrella is 10€. also the bar there is reasonably priced (aperol around 6/7€) and they got good ice cream! also the staff there is very friendly and helpful🥰
Katharina A — Google review
This place is absolutely amazing. Such a historical site set on the small cliff overlooking the lake. There is also a great little beach at the bottom of the cliff!
Oliver S — Google review
This is a beautiful beach that I recommend to everyone. I have come to Ohrid multiple times to visit family, and this beach is always a must. At the time of my visit, there are sunbeds you can pay for, the wooden ones are 600 denari, the plastic ones are 300 denari. You get a little table and umbrella to go along with it. It's a bit on the pricey side, but you're allowed to put your towel on the ground as well. Most people opt to pay for a sunbed though, as the pebbles can get annoying should you choose the latter. There is a cafe there with food such as pizza, and different variations of pancakes for dessert. They also make beverages such as coffee, alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, etc... Also slightly on the more pricey side, but that is due to the convenience of the cafe being right there on the beach. The staff were also very friendly. As for the beach itself, it's got stunning views of the lake, and should you want to do some sightseeing before coming down there, there is the beautiful St John Kaneo church above that is accessible via a path on foot. The views from there are stunning. Just remember to dress modestly if going inside! There is also music they play from loud speakers for a nice beachy vibe. Overall, this is a beach I recommend to anyone who visits, and for those who are staying relatively close near the town, it is pretty much accessible by walk. I myself walked from my apartment to the beach, it took about 30-40min, but when you get there, it makes it all worth it. Key things: Bring sunscreen, it can get hot in the sun there. Also recommend bringing reef shoes if you plan to swim. They have placed sandbags at the entrance to the water that acts like an "underwater footpath", but beyond that there are more rocks, so having reef shoes can be very helpful. Seriously, come to this beach if you want to relax and get a feel of the stunning fresh water lake.

Kaneo Beach, located just below the iconic Church of St. Kaneo, is one of the most beautiful and well known spots in Ohrid. The view is breathtaking, and the atmosphere is unique. However, the evening service could use a bit more attention. Serving a cocktail in a plastic cup at night doesn’t quite match the experience ,I understand it’s a beach and for daytime that’s fine, but in the evening, when guests come to relax and enjoy, a more appropriate presentation would make it perfect.

Beautiful beachside area with restaurant/bar & sun loungers
Felix K — Google review
It's a nice place if you want to chill next to the water. Pleasant scenery and romantic lighting. Decent and friendly staff as well, except for the fact that the table next to us never got served and they ended up leaving. There were three waiters and it was an exremely slow and relaxed evening with only a few tables filled. The table was not cleaned, however, and we were served our drinks in regular plastic cups, despite obviously not ordering takeaway. For a place charging premium prices: 230mkd for 330ml beer, 200mkd for a 330ml serving of soft drink, 350mkd for a serving of pancakes, you'd expect them to give you a glass for your 140mkd 330ml of sparkling water.

The town is located on the Ohrid lake North Macedonia, which is part of UNESCO listed Natural and cultural region. The old town was surprisingly a great place to visit with historic churches, natural beauty and amazing views from the lake using a boat ride. A lot to see and one can spend half day minimum. There are many local certified guides and it’s best experienced with them on foot. You can enjoy the historic churches, castle, walled city, great restaurants, lake and more.

Plaoshnik is an archaeological site in Ohrid, featuring a restored 9th-century church and ruins from earlier structures. The remains of an early Christian basilica, believed to date back to the 5th century, have been carefully excavated, revealing exquisite mosaic floors with depictions of exotic birds and animals. A raised walkway allows visitors to get a close-up look at this marvelous spectacle.
I got an unexpected private tour guide and it was truly amazing! If you are into history, this site is a must! It’s full with art and mosaics, one of them said to be brought by Alexander the Great himself!

The church was built by St.Clement  in the year 893, on the foundation of an earlier Christian basilica, and dedicated to St.Panteleimon.Otomans destroyed it and build a mosque. Church was restored in 2002 on old foundation. Inside church are remain of St. Clement. Arheological place is still restored. On the ground are also old baptismal font from early christian period, mosaics and newly built theological university. On entrance you can find local guide that works for some small fee.
Ana J — Google review
Such high potential and so unkept! It is beautiful here to see all the history, but most of the area is overgrown, paths aren’t clear, there are fenced off areas with more interesting areas that you don’t get access to. So strange to see such a historic place look almost abandoned. The whole area just seems unfinished.
Matyas A — Google review
The faux-Byzantine basilica is nice but calling the entire place an archaeological park is a stretch. More like an archeological wasteland — nothing to see, just rocks and brick shards and scorched grass and remnants of walls — without information boards or any type of information whatsoever. Make an effort!

Potpesh Beach is a hidden gem in the heart of Ohrid. Nestled right beneath the old town and next to charming stone houses, it offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty. The water is crystal clear and perfect for a refreshing swim, especially in the morning when it’s calm and peaceful. It’s a small beach, but that’s part of the charm – not too crowded, and the views of the lake and old town are incredible. There are a few nearby cafés and bars where you can grab a drink and enjoy the relaxing vibe. Highly recommended for a quiet swim or a romantic sunset moment. A must-visit if you’re exploring Ohrid!

It’s okay, nothing more than that. You can rent chairs and umbrellas for 10€ in a pair coffe was okay soft drinks not cold so much.
Stefan S — Google review
The beach is extremely beautiful, lots of chairs to relax on and worth to go to on a holiday. Because it's probably the best beach that's closest to the centre. However, the "restaurant" Plaža Potpeš is not the best. They'll give you a delay of service, dirty glasses to your drinks and just bad service in general. They're called a "restaurant" but they don't serve any food, which is a shame cause of their location. We ordered cocktails for 250 Denar on their cocktail menu. But they charged us 350 Denar because it's 3 years old, and they haven't changed it until then. We asked the staff in another occasion, if they could help us get some chairs that belonged to the restaurant, which no one sat on except they were some towels on them. They were even empty when we got there. The total time they were free were around two hours. We got pretty frustrated, but eventually some other chairs got free and we sat there instead, luckily. It feels like with this behaviour, they lack experience and service skills which is understandable. Because the staff looks like they're around 14-15 years old. My advice to you as a tourist is to not order drinks from them, but rather sit far away and bring your own alcohol. It's cheaper than to pay drinks and the fee for the chairs, which is the more luxurious ones. I hope I was any help for anyone, have a great summer in Ohrid!

Comparable to iconic galleries in Mount Sinai, Mount Athos, and Moscow, these treasures represent exceptional achievements in Byzantine and Slavic icon painting.

Small gallery, but it holds some very impressive icons, the oldest nearly 1000 years old. For lovers of religous art a must see. However, small note: opening hours are irregular, sometimes even deviating from the posted schedule. When you get there, there's no garantee that the ticket office is manned, even if the museum is opened. So be warned. You might be disappointed.

Entrance ia 100 dinars for a two storey display, the one above holding genuine wood icons you are allowed to see at a distance, the floor below holds replicas of old icons made bu different artists in the 20th century. There are no photos allowed on the floor with original icons. The muaeum itself is very small with a tiny set of items. Compared to other places it's not really worth the money. The magnificent collection of religious icons on show in this gallery date from the middle of the 11th to the end of the 19th Century. All of them are vibrant and powerful, none of the photographs of them do them justice as it's difficult to capture the combination of painted elements and fine metal work - they are far and away the most amazing art in Ohrid.

The Monastery of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Kališta is a small yet charming Orthodox church that houses traditional painted icons. The main attraction is a rock with narrow passageways leading to old monk cells and a chapel carved into the rock. The monastery also boasts efforts in wine bottling. It's considered a spiritual place, often visited by church personnel for vacations and Sunday morning masses are open to all.
My son needed to go to the bathroom, the lady attending didn't speak English, German, Dutch nor Spanish. She made us pay the entrance fee for the cave church: Very beautiful church built into the rocky cliff now built into a part of the monastary. The construction is visibly ancient and a real treat to experience. Very affordable too :)

Definitely 5+ stars from me.

Mustafa Paša Mosque, situated on a hillside overlooking Skopje's Old Bazaar, is a well-preserved 15th-century mosque with stunning Islamic patterns and decorations reminiscent of those found in Turkey. The mosque features a peaceful rose garden and offers breathtaking views of the old town. Visitors can explore the interior when there are no religious activities, leaving their shoes at the entrance as per tradition.
Visiting the Mustafa Pasha Mosque in Skopje was a peaceful and inspiring experience. The moment I entered the courtyard, I was struck by the beauty of its Ottoman architecture and the calm atmosphere that surrounded the mosque. Its elegant dome, slender minaret, and intricate details made it one of the most stunning landmarks I saw in the city. Inside, the mosque was serene and beautifully decorated, with intricate patterns and a sense of history that added to its charm. The well-kept gardens around it offered a quiet place to pause and reflect, away from the busy city. The Mustafa Pasha Mosque was both spiritually uplifting and historically fascinating—a true gem of Skopje.

Had a chance doing our prayer in this beautiful old mosque. The ablution is outside. The mosque is not that big. It's built in 1492 during ottoman empire. The mosque is largely intact from its original state and no additions have been made. It has 2 floors with narrow stairs where the second floor is for women prayer hall. However, if no crowd, the women can pray at 1st floor at the women prayer hall area.

beautiful mosque which you can visit as a tourist so long as you are respectful and cover up. nice gardens as well. sometimes I like to think of a different life wherest I am but a small kitten, running around the gardens in a mosque, with no thoughts of particular importance, feeling the grace of god sustaining me day after day…just shower thoughts I guess

Nestled in the national parkland, Lake Prespa is a charming freshwater lake with an abundance of flora and fauna. This ancient lake, formed around 5 million years ago due to tectonic activity, is situated at the tripoint of Macedonia, Albania, and Greece. Fed by both surface and underwater springs, it boasts a unique ecosystem that has led to the continuous speciation of various organisms.
Excellent place to visit. Kids friendly. Very easy parking. Friendly people.

One of Europe’s oldest lakes: Lake Prespa is a tectonic lake dating back over a million years, sustained by ongoing tectonic subsidence that prevents it from filling in—or “aging into a bog” as most lakes do . • High-altitude lake: It’s one of the highest tectonic lakes in the Balkans, sitting at about 853 m above sea level . • Connected water systems: Water from Great Prespa drains underground into Lake Ohrid, about 150 m lower in elevation—a remarkable hydrological connection . Biodiversity Hotspot • Ecological diversity: The area boasts a dazzling 2,000 species of plants and animals, including around 50 endemic animals and 19 endemic plants, plus over 200 bird species—and several endemic fish species unique to the lake and the Balkans . • Birdlife haven: Home to the world’s largest Dalmatian pelican colony, along with populations of Great White Pelicans and Pygmy Cormorants. Over 1300 pairs of Dalmatian pelicans alone have been recorded . • Rich fauna beyond birds: The Albanian side alone hosts over 25 bat species—including Europe’s largest population of long-fingered bats—23 reptile species, and 11 amphibians such as Hermann’s tortoise and fire salamander . • Endemic fish: Of the 11 native fish species, nine are endemic—like the Prespa barbel and Prespa trout—and there’s even a freshwater sponge found only here. Conservation & Transboundary Significance • Protected on multiple levels: The region features national parks in all three countries, is a Ramsar Wetland site, and in 2014 it was added to UNESCO’s Ohrid-Prespa Transboundary Biosphere Reserve . Cultural & Historical Highlights • Ancient heritage: On the small island of Mal Grad (Albania) lies a 14th-century cave church—St. Mary’s Church—founded in 1369 by the Serbian noble Kesar Novak, featuring frescoes and Greek inscriptions . • Ancient remnants underwater: Archaeological diving projects have revealed artifacts dating back approximately 3,100 years on the lakebed .

St. Panteleimon is a historic church in Macedonia, dating back to 1164 and renowned for its vibrant medieval frescoes. The region boasts beautiful churches, historic monuments, and a medieval castle atop the city. Notable attractions include St. Sophia Church, St.
A small Byzantine church dedicated to St. Panteleimon, located in the surroundings of Mount Vodno. I joined a group tour to visit here, but I heard taxi prices should be around 5€ to 7€ to visit. The church is known for its religious frescoes that indicated the development of the Renaissance in the 12th century. The church grounds are quiet and relaxing, while also providing a beautiful, unobstructed view of Skopje. It is best to experience this church with a guide, there's so much history in each little detail of the church. It's mesmerizing how well preserved the original frescoes from the century are, considering the church had been through an earthquake.

Quiet and peaceful monastery. It's a bit of a drive from the center through narrow and winding roads but worth it. There's parking right outside the monastery. Gates were closed (arrived around 4pm, used the black gate near the parking) but not locked, and so were the church doors. You may have the place to yourself. No entrance fees. Good views of the city from here

Small church outside Skopje. Entry fee is 120 MD, because it doubles as a small museum. The frescos inside are incredibly beautiful. I was lucky to have a passionate guide who took plenty time to explain the images. It's hard to believe some fresco are 800+ years old, with how stunning the colours still are.

I took a tour to the Mountain Vodno and Matka Canyon, but I recommend you to ask if the cable car is working because we were disappointed that the cable car was not working at the time we took the tour. Tour planners also didn’t give us any news about it but it was not working for a couple days long. Site is skopje daily tours, our guide was very nice and joyful. Entry fee to the church is 2 euros but we were early so they didnt charge us 😹

Amazing place near Skopje. A must see is the church (built in 1164) and the composition called "Lamentation of Christ" by an unknown fresco painter which is considered a forerunner of Renaissance painting.

The Macedonian Orthodox Church „Ascension of Jesus“ is a remarkable temple-like structure located beneath Skopje Fortress. Actually it's a very nice church but the cleaning woman inside didn't allow me to make photos and was very angry. I didn't get why it was forbidden to make photos without flash. But still very nice small church, worth to visit.

What a cute little church with its fabulous frescos. I enjoyed the memorial and all the information plus pictures of the heroic North Macedonian, Gotse Delchev, the great man immortalised in North Macedonian tradition. He advocated for the establishment of a secret revolutionary network and was a leading figure in the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation (IMRO) which sought to liberate the region of Macedonia from Ottoman rule. He was killed in a skirmish with an Ottoman unit in 1903, on the eve of the Ilinden Uprising.

Instead of a soul to buy a ticket from I found a sign telling me not to take photos inside. Entry fee for a holy site and no photos are allowed? No thank you. Definitely not recommended.

Was a recommendation for a tourist guide, but I felt it is way too overrated. It is a very small chapel, the paintings not the most well maintained (except for the ceiling) and you have to pay 120 (~2€) to enter. Also they don't like that you take pictures inside. But check for yourself... Here are some pictures for your consideration:

The church offers visitors a spiritual break and an opportunity to admire the impressive level of hagiography art.
A little gem. Unfortunately closed for restoration when we visited, but we could still appreciate the exterior and gardens from the street. Nestled in the heart of Bansko's old town, the Holy Trinity Church stands as a remarkable example of Bulgarian National Revival architecture. The church's exterior, dominated by its bell tower, is easily recognizable on Pirin Street. Once inside, visitors are treated to a stunning iconostasis and an array of beautiful frescoes adorning the walls.

Dear pilgrims and seekers of spiritual solace, I implore you to set foot upon the sacred grounds of Bansko, where a resplendent church, adorned with a garden of sublime beauty, awaits your arrival. Prepare to be mesmerized by an experience that transcends the boundaries of the ordinary, as this extraordinary sanctuary beckons with a unique tapestry of colors, where the divine and the whimsical intertwine. As I stood before the church, my gaze was drawn to the magnificent garden that enveloped it like a vibrant embrace. Blooms of all varieties unfurled their petals in harmonious unity, swaying gently in the whispering winds, as if choreographed by the whimsical hands of SpongeBob himself. In this garden of tranquil respite, one can bask in the embrace of nature's gentle melodies, where time slows and the soul finds solace. But it is not merely the ethereal beauty of the garden that enthralls; the interior of this hallowed sanctuary holds treasures beyond measure. Prepare to step into a realm where colors dance upon the canvas of faith, where the mundane is transcended by the extraordinary. As I crossed the threshold, I was greeted by a sight so enchanting that it mirrored the vibrant hues of SpongeBob's pineapple home, concealed within the depths of Bikini Bottom. The pillars that adorned the church rose like stalwart sentinels, their intricate designs seemingly crafted by the masterful hands of Squidward's artistic finesse. Each stroke of color breathed life into the edifice, as if capturing the essence of divine inspiration. The ceiling, akin to a celestial kaleidoscope, unveiled a tapestry of celestial hues that echoed the very fabric of heaven itself. And then, as my eyes wandered, I beheld the paintings that adorned the sacred walls. Each stroke, each hue, seemed to sing the song of Bikini Bottom's most celebrated resident, SpongeBob SquarePants. Though veiled in the cloak of metaphor, the spirit of SpongeBob permeated the air, evoking a sense of childlike wonder and a reminder of the boundless joy that resides within us all. This church, dear travelers, is not your typical house of worship. It is a sanctuary that transcends the ordinary, inviting visitors to witness the divine through a lens of whimsy. It challenges the conventions of tradition, breathing life into the spiritual journey with an unexpected fusion of sacred and playful. It is an invitation to embrace the profound joy that springs forth when faith and imagination intertwine. In this garden of heavenly delight, where SpongeBob's spirit dances amidst the blooms, the soul finds solace, the heart finds solace, and the mind finds solace. It is an invitation to explore the sacred realms of Bansko, where the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary. So, dear pilgrims, surrender to the irresistible call of this extraordinary church, nestled within Bansko's embrace. Let the colors of the garden and the SpongeBob-inspired wonders of the interior guide your steps towards a spiritual experience like no other. Open your heart, open your mind, and embark upon a journey that will leave an indelible mark upon your very being. May the divine presence embrace you, and may the whimsical spirit of SpongeBob inspire you on this extraordinary pilgrimage to Bansko.

The Clock Tower in Skopje, Macedonia is a significant historical landmark that dates back to the 16th century. It was built as a solution to regulate working hours in the old bazaar, ensuring fairness among workers. This unique tower was the first of its kind in the Ottoman Empire and symbolizes Skopje's importance as a trading center. The clock mechanism was brought from Szeged, Hungary during Turkish occupation.
The Clock tower is an unique building from 16th century, we visited it last week. The clock mechanism was "brought" from th Hungarian city Szeged after the Turkish occupation. Unfortunately, we could not see inside due to reconstruction it has been scaffolded. Near you can see the Iza Bey mausoleum and grave of the Bey. Beautiful and fairly clean/calm. Entrance is paid by a fairly small fee at the gate. The area is in an old camp and you can definitely feel the age of this place, its definitely not kept up too good. There is a sand beach with good views of the monastery tho.

There are too many beach chairs. I assume they're there to cover up all the cigarette buds on the sand. No pets allowed. Bathrooms are clean. Unfortunately there isn't a place to shower or rinse off after being in the lake.

Amazing place where to spend time at Ohrid lake. It’s sand beach with turquoise water. It’s worth visiting it.
Lena M — Google review
The beach was the best so far, not too crowded, relaxing and you even have a café near by to get some coffee.

Sandy beach, but there is also a grass area right next to it. There is all what you need - parking, restaurants, shops, good infrastrukture, beautifull monastery. Must to be visited when you stay in Ohrid.

(Translated by Google) Evening strolls through Ohrid's narrow streets can be surprising – sometimes, around a bend, you discover true, quiet gems. One of them is the small, charming 19th-century Macedonian Orthodox Church of St. Barbara. A modest information board greets you at the entrance, and an impressive bell hangs to the left of the door. Although the courtyard is overgrown with wild bushes, this gives the place a slightly mysterious atmosphere, as if time were passing slowly here. An ideal place for reflection and the spirit of old Ohrid. Small church close to St Mary's that was locked up when I visited. It oversees the lake and is a great spot for pictures. (Translated by Google) "Saints Constantine and Helena" is an Orthodox church and despite its small size it is extremely beautiful. The church is located within the old city, in close proximity to the "Holy Mother of God Perivlepta", one of the famous and large churches in the city. According to the inscription on the southern entrance from the inside, the church was built and inscribed in 1477, and its founder was Hieromonk Parthenius. The church has a single nave with a semicircular vault with a dome and a three-sided apse. On the south side, a small chapel dedicated to Saint Paraskeva was later built. The entire interior is fabulously inscribed.

The Church of Holy Mother Bolnichka is a charming little church nestled in a vibrant courtyard. Visitors can explore its interior for a small fee and browse through a quaint shop offering icons and Orthodox literature. The medieval Roman frescoes, though not restored, are remarkably well-preserved. While information about its history is lacking in English, it's still worth spending around 15 minutes to admire the beauty of this lovely Orthodox church.
Lovely little church located in a colourful yard. There is an entrance fee of 50 denars and a small shop inside where you can buy icons or Orthodox literature. The frescoes are typical Medieval Roman and are not restored but they are preserved quite well. No info is provided in English as to its history. Good to visit for about 15 minutes

Nikola Bolnički) and was built in the 14th century. Our guide tells us that they were built for people coming to the city to undergo quarantine (for fear of the plague). One church was for men and the other for women. Entrance costs 50 denars, there's not much to see inside, but it's worth a look. The original frescoes and historic interior are impressive. But of course you have to find an open interior open to visitors, but sometimes it's different. Oryginalne freski i zabytkowe wnętrze robią wrażenie. Tylko oczywiście trzeba trafić na otwarte wnętrze udostępnione dla zwiedzających, z tym czasami bywa różnie.

Small chapel near the St Mary's. It was closed when I visited Only information available is in Macadamian. Has a nice yard, it is well maintained
Klaus W — Google review
The church of St. Dimitrija in Ohrid with its architecture belongs to the type single-aisle structures covered with a double gable roof with visible timber construction from the inside of the building, in the literature considered as church with a hemispherical arch until now. However, considering the researches that have been made it was concluded that the church was arched with roots with two slopes - gable root. The eastern side of the building is emphasized by a semicircular apse which facades are shaped in a three-sided apse. Left and right of the apse, semicircular niches had been placed. There is another rectangular niche behind the iconostasis, on the north wall. The natural lighting of the object is resolved with one before window on the north wall and two small openings on the east wall in the apse and above it.
