Park
Historic Sites
Peace Memorial Park in Okinawa commemorates the WWII battle fought there with monuments and open space. The park is beautiful and expansive, with facilities such as eateries, restrooms, picnic areas, and parks available for visitors. Public transportation is convenient, and guided tours in English are recommended to enhance knowledge of the historical events. While some areas require an entrance fee, many outdoor attractions are free.
Visiting the Okinawa Peace Memorial Park and Museum was a deeply moving experience. Set in a beautiful location near the ocean, the site offers both a sense of tranquility and a powerful reminder of the past. The peaceful surroundings contrast with the heavy history the memorial represents, making it a place for quiet reflection and remembrance. One of the most striking features of the park is the rows of stone slabs engraved with the names of those who lost their lives in the Battle of Okinawa. Walking along these solemn monuments, you can feel the weight of history and the impact of war on countless individuals and families. The memorial honors all who perished, regardless of nationality, emphasizing a message of peace and reconciliation. The museum itself is informative and deeply touching, providing a comprehensive look at the events leading up to, during, and after the battle. Through photographs, personal testimonies, and historical artifacts, it paints a vivid picture of the hardships endured by soldiers and civilians alike. The exhibits are both educational and emotional, leaving a lasting impression. The observation tower offers a stunning panoramic view of the coastline, a reminder of Okinawa’s natural beauty even in a place marked by sorrow. The contrast between the peaceful ocean and the history of the land is striking. Overall, a visit to the Okinawa Peace Memorial is a profound experience. It’s a place of remembrance, learning, and hope for a future without war. I highly recommend visiting.

Love the spacious big park it’s situated in, it is also located right next to the ocean. The greenery & serenity of the place is beautiful. There’s a museum located inside the building if you like to know more about it. Spacious parking located 5mins away from the main building.

This was a profound spot my husband and I discovered while driving on the island. Located on the southern end, the museum and surroundings grounds commemorate the over 250,000 casualties that resulted from the Battle of Okinawa, which occurred between March and September 1945. That figure, which included 150,000 Okinawan civilians, was more than the combined total in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Dramatically set on Mabuni Hill next to the Pacific, the area consists of several components starting with the expansive museum itself, which preserves memories of the battle through vivid photographs, artifacts, testimonials, and dioramas. An observation tower provided stunning panoramic views of the grounds and the rugged coastline. The museum was established in 1975. The newest addition, the Cornerstone of Peace, was built in 1995. It was a striking sight, concentric arcs of black granite block screens inscribed with the names of the 250,000 who died. It reminded us of the design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. There are numerous individual memorials spread out throughout the grounds, but I would think 2-3 hours should suffice to tour the grounds thoughtfully.
Ed U — Google review
Brilliant park as a whole, worth the drive from Naha. Expect to spend half a day really exploring the grounds, the nearby museum and the beaches. What I loved was the diverse range of memorials dedicated from each prefecture, all unique in design. Be sure to follow the steep yet rewarding hike to the waterfront with crystal clear waters and rocks to climb. The museum itself has permanent exhibits including an interactive WWII area, an observatory and temporary exhibits hosted on the lower floors. Featuring activities for all ages, I would definitely recommend this for families, couples or solo travellers.

A beautiful and deeply moving place to visit. Okinawa Peace Prayer Park offers stunning ocean views alongside powerful memorials that honor history and promote peace. The grounds are well maintained, and the atmosphere is both serene and reflective. A must-see for anyone who wants to better understand Okinawa’s history and spirit.
Tremon J — Google review
Rented an e-bike in Naha for a novel way to get to and from the park - taxis, though quick, were pricey and busses, though cheaper, were indirect. Grounds and scenery were truly breathtaking and peaceful. If looking to explore the many monuments (recommended), be prepared to walk. Coverup if sunny. Museum was informative, though dated. Bathrooms were plentiful. Blue Seal almond pistachio ice cream, just outside the museum, nicely capped off the visit.
Greg A — Google review
Very huge park with many memorials setup for different periods and locations. Will take probably more than 2 hours to cover all the memorial. Must visit the Himeyuri peace museum as it offers u the war past in Okinawa. The buddha statue was hand crafted by a japanese craftsman and it was impressive.
Jon P — Google review
One of the most humbling experiences here in Okinawa. I recommend going through the outdoors areas and ending with the actual museum portion. It can be very heavy going through, but its also vital to understand history and why peace is so important.

The Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum is a solemn place dedicated to promoting world peace through education and history. It honors the lives lost during the Battle of Okinawa, regardless of nationality or military status. The museum features various exhibitions and an 'Information Library' with extensive materials on peace. The tranquil park surrounding the museum provides a peaceful setting for contemplation and remembrance, with vast grounds and well-maintained memorial structures.
This is one of two museums in the Peace Park, and this one serves as a primer for those uninitiated to the WWII and Okinawa's place in it in the closing months. Well laid out and second only to the Himeyuri Museum nearby.
Bernard T — Google review
There are important places to visit to understand what history was and so we can learn to reproduce the same mistakes. The Peace Museum and the attached park are such a place, with a deep sense of quiet and peace, while bringing a deeply meaningful light on Okinawan history. The tales told are harrowing, and that is what makes them important to read, watch, and listen to. As a warning, a few pictures are quite graphic.
Gregory E — Google review
Huge memorial park. You can easily spent couple of hours there. Well maintained. Go to higher area of the park - Mabuni Hill where you can see numerous monuments. From there you will also have beautifull view over wild Okinawan coast.
Uroš D — Google review
The museum that tell the story of Okinawa's struggle during the war time. They don't allow photography of the permanent exhibition. It's unfortunate that the numbers of the artifacts displayed are limited.
Ekkaparb C — Google review
A very well done museum situated on an absolutely gorgeous site by the sea. Although the exhibition itself is small (covering just one floor of the building), it is full of well curated exhibits with enough English translations that you can understand, although knowing Japanese does help enhance the experience. About an hour plus in, I was less than halfway through, so if you’re a slow and thorough museum-goer like me, you could definitely spend more than a couple hours here. My favorite exhibit was the collection of history/social studies textbooks from various countries as although they were quite old, you could compare and contrast how each depicted the war. It was also interesting to see how after the annexation, the Japanese efforts to assimilate the locals were similar to the atrocities perpetrated against Native Americans by the US. The grounds are also stunning and extremely peaceful. My only complaint was that some of the memorials scattered around the park weren’t very well signed or explained; they felt a little neglected so I wish that were different. Otherwise, we spent a wonderfully educational morning here learning about the Battle of Okinawa. Like any war museum, it may not be an easy or emotionally comfortable stop, but it should be on your must-visit list.
Crystal T — Google review
I arrived 1 hour before closing thinking that I would have enough time to see everything, but I wished I had given it more time. The testimonial videos from survivors of the war are towards the end of the route, and are available in many different languages. They are worth watching to try to understand the horrors that Ryukyuans had to go through. The park itself is beautiful and a peaceful place.
Raquel C — Google review
Beautiful, peaceful and memorable park and museum marking Okinawa’s 20th century and more recent history and dedicated to peace - notably remembering all who fell on the island. Worth to visit to have a rounded view of the island’s past as well as its future. The park is large and you can spend a few hours walking around if you wish.
Karen A — Google review
Amazing place with lots of historical insights about the war on Okinawa. Very deep and touching stories and pictures, and the view you get of the pacific ocean when you're done is out of this world! 10/10 would recommend.

Nature & Parks
Itoman Bibi Beach is a tourist hotspot known for its marine activities, man-made tide pools, and abundant sea life. Its name 'beautiful' truly reflects the stunning scenery of the wide and relaxing beach with clear blue waters that face towards the sunset, offering views of Kerama islands and airplanes overhead. However, despite its natural charm, there are limited shopping options in this area except for one shop on site.
Small swimming areas but you still can get some small sea animals like fishes and clams. Think popular for couples for their wedding shot!
Benjamin L — Google review
Good area for beach activities as it has a wall to calm the tides. Has beach activities. Paid parking.
Yuuki A — Google review
It was a great day! Sun was out, wind was blowing (acting like a hair dryer), and water was warm for a northeastern American like myself. The views were incredible (which I had attached some pictures) & it was not even close to being crowded. We had eaten at the little cafe which was very convenient. It was affordable, and pretty good.
Christopher F — Google review
Just like it’s kanji (meaning beautiful), it indeed live up to its name :D Beautiful and wide and sooo relaxing. We were quite lucky that the beach isn’t crowded when we visited the place on September ( since summer vacation is over). However, not so many shops are visible around the beach so best to buy the things needed before visiting the area. There’s only one shop in there that we found
Valerie L — Google review
Best beach in the Naha region! The water is warm and neat. The sun is capable of bad sunburns. There is only one small shopping store. Worth a visit!
Zsolt — Google review
The best place to see in Okinawa. Beach is beautiful and direct bus from Naha bus Terminal, Naha airport or Akamine station. Bus TK02 is recommended
Sovann K — Google review
What's in a name? Nothing. But 美々sure lives up to its name! Beach is wide, white, blue ocean, and faces towards the sunset. You can see kerama islands and watch airplanes overhead. Minus one point for being a city beach.
Ivan K — Google review
Awesome beach to go to, even during non-seasonal hours (closed for swimming) as there's a nice kid's park there too. Great views for the adults (on a clear day) and great activities for kids too, including a mini outdoor rock climbing wall.

The Cornerstone of Peace stands as a poignant tribute along the serene coastline, featuring engraved granite slabs that honor all lives lost during the Battle of Okinawa, regardless of their nationality or status as soldiers or civilians. This memorial is part of the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum, where visitors can delve into various exhibitions and access an extensive "Information Library" dedicated to peace studies.
A quiet and solemn spot, which has witnessed unsaid and unimaginable horror. The memorial offers a moment of self-reflection and a morbid revelation that mankind cannot live in peace.

Large park dedicated to the military and civilians who lost their lives in the WW11 battle of Okinawa. walls of names divided by British and American, Japanese and Okinawan civilians.
S L — Google review
Visited this location several times already and even fortunate to witness the anniversary of the end of the okinawan war with the Japanese Prime Minister in attendence. The location is full of history as well as capturing the memory of WWII. At this very location the battle of okinawa did end. Around June 22/23. Mabuni hill was the last Japanese stand with a cave nearby where 2 Japanese Generals took their lives. There is also a cliff called 'suicide cliff' where many japanese soldiers and civilians took their lives. Additionally, the ashes of 180k civilians who perished in the war are housed in beautiful memorials on mabuni hill. This whole area overlooks the ocean with breathtaking scenery.

This was an very well put together memorial. It was a great experience for anyone wanting to gain a better perspective on Okinawan culture.

This is a very beautiful monument to honor all who sacrificed during the Battle of Okinawa. Groups of Japanese students mingling with US Marines set a stark, yet hopeful contrast to what happened here so long ago. We have come a long way.

A monument with the names of every personnel who was killed during the war in Okinawa. The foreigners names are written in their local language such as English and Korean. The name list is still being expanded to this day.

Nishizaki Water Park is a family-friendly public park featuring various kids' play structures surrounding an artificial pond. The park offers a man-made waterfall, a small stream, and the chance to spot fish and turtles in the pond. Children can have fun on different playground equipment and enjoy a large slide overlooking the water. Additionally, there are four water slides available in the main water park area. The park also includes sports complexes, various parks, and play areas for visitors to explore.
We came here in December. There were not a lot of people. Good amount of parking spaces. The slide is fun. Be sure to bring your slide pad with you. Enjoy the nice breeze or a nice picnic. I wonder if the park can get busy during baseball season.
Esther C — Google review
A big park with a long slide that the end is on a small island surrounding by the water, so make sure you keep your kids in your sight. However, we found this place needed to be maintained, the public toilet is not very clean.
Peter C — Google review
Joyful long slide with beautiful view, though a bit old for facilities.
Chen K — Google review
A roller slide to an island!? Not to mention the bridge back to the main land is intentionally distressed and made to look broken. Amazingly great park to stumble upon. Parking is a bit far away but take a close look at the satellite view and you'll find it. Definitely going back for the water park. More to follow!
Mark J — Google review
Fun location to walk around. The water park here is small and rules are strict within the actual water park but a great way to waste a few hours of your day if you have small kids. There are 4 different water slides available in the main water park. Around the sports complex you can find various parks and play areas.

Museums
The Himeyuri Peace Museum stands as a heartfelt tribute to the Himeyuri Student Corps, a group of young female students and their teachers who bravely served as nurses during the harrowing siege of Okinawa in World War II. This small yet impactful museum captures the essence of their sacrifices amidst unimaginable conditions, with many tragically losing their lives. Visitors can explore poignant testimonials that shed light on the experiences of these courageous individuals, making it an emotional journey through history.
Deep impact musuem about the high schoolers whose lives were lost during the Battle of Okinawa. Signs in Japanese and English. Describes the conditions these young beautiful souls had to endure. Less than 500¥ per an adult. Parking very close by, it's next to the gift shop.
Yuuki A — Google review
Definitely spend the 300 yen to get the audio guide, because it was really worth it. There is a lot more context provided AND the survivor testimonies are immediately translated into your language as you watch the videos, which is really cool. The most meaningful experience I had in Okinawa. Super sad and horrifying, but an important reminder of the necessity of peace. I also appreciated that the captions were super honest and straightforward as well. The survivor testimonies and the photos/description of each girl who is honored there utterly destroyed me.
Roxanne W — Google review
Offers a perspective from the girls school who were conscripted with horrifying testimonies from survivors. Somber, thought provoking museum with 5 sections depicting their school life, how it begun and continues towards the end of the Okinawa war. 450 yen per adult, 300 yen for audio guide.
Cole P — Google review
This museum made a deep impression on me. Last time I had such feelings at a concentration camp museum in Germany. Very strong feelings. The museum tells personal stories of real people, who witnessed and experienced the horrors of war themselves. Such stories often get lost in the background of grand events in history books, but the museum highlights small stories of ordinary people, thus making the events feel real. I defenitely recommend visiting Himeyuri Museum.
Семен Е — Google review
I have been to a lot of museums in Japan that have been about the War, but I think this museum stood out the most for me. Excellently presented, a very interesting exhibition with items that belonged to the students. Very, very sad but it’s important that their stories will never be forgotten. I’ll definitely go again! RIP.
Will B — Google review
A somber museum focused on school children who sheltered and died in a stone cave in front of the museum. They are commemorated in a photographic listing of each girl and their individual story.
Garry B — Google review
Very nice museum. Highly recommend for those curious about the effects of the Battle of Okinawa.
Andrew Z — Google review
A poignant story of how war affects innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire. I like how the setup of the museum succeeds in making the visit enjoyable while avoiding the draggy-ness of over-information. The testimonials and accounts of the last days before the surrender were very interesting - glad there was English translation at that one booth in the room filled with Japanese scripts. The life-sized cave that opens up to the entrance of the museum is a nice touch too. Tip for drivers using Gmaps: Don’t put Himeyuri Museum as your destination and follow the route blindly, as I did. You’ll end up in a no man’s land below a hill the museum is located. Instead, put Himeyuri Memorial Tower as the destination and you’ll find some parking near the museum.

The Okinawa Peace Hall is a stunning monument dedicated to world peace, standing at 12 meters tall and 8 meters wide. The sound of rain on the monument creates a meditative atmosphere, while the play of light inside the chamber is visually captivating. Inside, there's a large Buddha and thought-provoking paintings depicting war's devastation with English explanations for each. Don't miss the staircase leading to a collection of rocks from around the world or the butterfly garden at the exit.
Beautiful area with Inexpensive entry. Giant statue in the middle and works of art surround the interior, it's a cool area to walk through. Additionally, there is a butterfly garden out back, if you are interested the entry is included with the ticket to the main hall.

There's a big buddha in the centre of the main hall, with paintings lining the whole wall by an artist who was inspired by the destruction caused buy the war. There's English explanation for each photo so even if you're not into art you could still enjoy the art pieces. Just behind the Buddha there's a staircase that leads to a collection of rocks from around the world which is easy to miss. Also at the exit there's a butterfly garden which was a added bonus.

many high school groups, lots of blue seal ice vendors. the buddha and the coast is nice.
Mircullina — Google review
The pitter-patter of the rain on the monument above us, alongside the flowing rush of the rainwater down the walls on the front and side, echoing and reverberating through the ante-chamber under the memorial created a mesmerising and meditative ringing and if you listened carefully, it had an almost hauntingly musical quality about it. The light streaming down the front of the chamber in an otherwise dark but shiny hollow from the smoothed carved rock surfaces was a visual spectacle as well. I am not certain if this very scenario was intentionally planned by the architects of this memorial, but it's not one experienced by many, that's for certain.

Mabuni Hill is a must-visit destination that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding park, the National War Cemetery, and various cenotaphs dedicated to fallen soldiers from each prefecture. This serene location not only serves as a poignant reminder of Japan's history—being the site of its last ground battle during World War II—but also promotes messages of peace. Families can enjoy quality time at the popular children's playground known as "Egg of Life," making it an ideal spot for relaxation on weekends.

We got up to the peak through the stairs which is not very used as we only realise there is a more scenic route through the memorial park when we walked down. Known as "Uminchu," or "sea people," this area boasts a bustling Fish Center featuring around ten fresh fish stores that showcase an impressive array of local catches. Visitors can explore various offerings, including sashimi from Sakashita Suisan Co., which provides insightful descriptions to help tourists appreciate the unique qualities of inshore fish.

(Translated by Google) Although it is not as well-known as other famous beaches in the prefecture, it is a coast that has not been touched by humans and is in a state close to nature. I think it's the best spot for snorkeling with high transparency. There are days when the tidal range is large, but the current is relatively calm because it is covered with reefs (be careful as the current may be fast depending on the weather and location). It is a sacred place that should be carefully protected and should not be changed.

However, there are many corals and rocks, so it is essential to wear a wet suit and boots for those with small children or those who are not used to it. If you try to go with sandals or rash guards, you will definitely get hurt. There is a large lawn and a nice shade of trees, and the wind from the sea is comfortable. A mysterious park with regular holidays .It is spacious and you can play comfortably. The view from the observatory is also nice.

This park looks quite abandoned. Nothing much to see there. But if you want to eat your snack in peace, read a book or just listen crickets, birds and waves than you are on the right place. No one will bother you there. Not even your mobile phone. 😄

There’s plenty of parking. Some Spot aren’t kept well. There’s a lot of space to walk. It’s a nice and quiet picnic area.

Visiting here was as expected. A somber experience for sure. Seeing what people did to each other in times of war made me appreciate the way that the people of Okinawa treated us while visiting the island.

Nice park in a calm area. In the hotter season you can wade in either of the small pools. Very popular for people of all ages.

Quite nice place to eat your bento by the river. Probably super fun for kids
Dioxete — Google review
It was closed when we went, possibly due to COVID-19. There was no water in the actual Children's pool. This time of year there were banana spiders on the bushes. It seemed more like an area to stretch your legs from driving than an actual destination. Small pools.
Heather H — Google review
It's pretty cool if you're local or around the area and need to cool down. Something you typically don't see in America. It's a natural cold spring. They have a little pool for kids and dogs. It's great.

(Translated by Google) Gar Park is located on the edge of a quiet residential area in the Yoza district of Itoman. It is spacious, has a large amount of water, and is well maintained. Killifish can be seen in the water. Shikunshi flowers (probably) grow thickly on the shelves, and gun lilies are blooming at your feet, which, combined with the water of the Gar, give it a cool feeling. There is also a place of worship on the premises, and it feels like a sacred place that has been cherished since ancient times. There is also a water play area for children, and there is space for parking. According to the information board, the water was used for wakamiji (young water) during the Lunar New Year and for bathing babies before birth.
