The 28 best coffee shops and best cafes in Lucca

The design and atmosphere of this little caffe is wonderful. Which is what first attracted myself and my other two companions. We were seated in the garden area, on a table that had not been wiped down and still had the spills from previous occupants. We ordered drinks to start with and these were fine. On the small side, compared to what we have encountered so far in Italy. The food? We ordered little tartlets, meatballs, salmon and a selection of 3 cheeses. The food came on a little high tea stand, lovely, it was well presented, the cheeses came on a plate with a tiny fork. The cheeses were supposed to be, pecorino, pecorino with rosemary and pecorino with blue cheese. No small plates were offered to either myself or my companions, no cutlery either. I specifically asked for a knife so that the individual pieces of cheese could be cut to not taint the taste. I asked the waiter to please point out which cheese was the rosemary as it wasn’t apparent by sight. The waiter pointed at a particular serving. Which both myself and my companions tasted and no rosemary could be tasted. The waiter who served us, asked if everything was OK, I advised him no. I advised that no rosemary could be tasted as all three of us love rosemary and this was the only reason we ordered this particular dish., the waiter advised that he would check with the chef. The waiter then came out with more cheese pointing at the rosemary on it, this we could see though could not possible eat any more cheese as we didn’t eat half of what had been provided. The waiter advised us to take it away with us, I advised no, as we do not have capacity to take with us and store it. The waiter took it away. Our experience of this caffe was tainted only by the service. In our experience of all of the restaurants we have visited in Italy on our many trips here, this has far been the worst experience as far as waiters and service go. Never have we encountered an experience like this before anywhere in the world so far. No appropriate cleaning down of the table for new guests. No appropriate cutlery or crockery was delivered or set out. No appropriate explanation of what was on offer and what each dish was. No choice offered when the waiter knew we were not happy. Our experience of this caffe is that whilst the decor is beautifully designed, the staff that served us lowered the standard of the fine establishment. If the service was 5 star like the establishment has marketed itself as in its design then it is worth the prices being charged. Poor service can destroy a reputation of a business over time. Sometimes rapidly. My advice is to avoid this caffe at all costs.

Lovely and classic inside. Especially the internal garden area. Unfortunately, the food is subpar and the service is extremely slow. Been here a couple of times and each time the coffee has come cold and the food has taken very long. I also want to express even when we asked for very hot coffee drinks the second time, the cappuccini still came cold. They seem to be understaffed as someone is always running around. Coffee and food is just ok. Wouldn’t recommend for coffee or food, but perhaps an aperitivo in a cozy spot with a friend or on one of their live music nights.

Caffè Santa Zita is not only beautifully located in the heart of Lucca, but it’s also run by one of the kindest and most professional teams I’ve ever encountered. The staff were welcoming, the service was efficient and warm, and the atmosphere just perfect for a relaxed break. What truly sets them apart, however, goes far beyond great coffee or charming ambiance. I accidentally left my purse at the café and only realized it was missing once I was back in Florence - after having visited multiple places and even cities that day. I wasn’t even sure where to begin searching. As a last hope, I contacted Caffè Santa Zita via WhatsApp… and guess what? They had found my purse! A heartfelt thank you to Michele and the entire staff for keeping it safe and for being so helpful and kind throughout. I couldn’t be more grateful. And what a lovely coincidence that we share the same name - definitely a sign! 😊 Highly recommend this gem of a café - not just for the coffee, but for the people behind it ❤️

Loved everything about this place! Santa Zita is like an oasis of calmness and style. You only need to enter it to be transported back in time. We had two coffees, one El Salvador specialty and a regular coffee, both very good, as well as two slices of delicious cake.

This place is a whole experience on itself. I definitely recommend checking it out! They offer a very diverse array of pastry, sandwiches, biscuits, cakes, and lunch dishes. We tried 4 different items and they were all very good! The interior is beautiful and cosy. You can sit on the terrace outside, but also in their little garden in the back. All staff are dressed to impress: they match the vibe of this spot. Be warned however: every 30 seconds they mist the place (this was in July) so your clothing/hair may get damp. A remark regarding the service: There are no translations on the menu card (which is fine) so we tried to look up the different dishes to figure out what they were. The waiter saw us clearly struggling (with our phones and the open menus) yet always quickly came to ask what we wanted while we did not have a clue yet. We felt very rushed: he kept standing there and looking at us expectantly so I just randomly chose. We would have appreciated some patience.

I would give them 10 stars if possible. The atmosphere is elegant and beautiful. We asked them to choose 2 of their favorite sweet treats we also got 3 sandwiches, the very best cappuccino I have had so far, a Bellini that was made with fresh juice and some sodas for the kids. Everything was stellar and amazing. They also dropped off a tray of snacks. Potato chips, olives and peanuts. We will be back in the morning for another wonderful snack.

Perhaps the best cappuccino I've had in Italy so far. Nice croissant. Excellent service. Lovely atmosphere and seating both inside and out. I also heard some others raving about the brunch items. Unfortunately I saw the apple pie after having a croissant. I'll be back.

The place is really beautiful and cozy, there are books and board games, the menu is pretty interesting, food and coffee tasty. However, I found the pricing a bit weird. After we took a place and got ready to order, we found out that there are 2 types of coffee - veloce (fast) and relax, and both types are basically the same, the difference (x2 in price!) is about where do you sit or how fast you drink (it was not really clear). Even though we had to pay two times more for the coffee, we also still had to pay for service. When it comes for service - firstly I got cappuccino instead of double espresso, then they forgot about the cinnamon - not a big issue, but for this price I’d expect something really perfect and relaxing. I appreciate a bowl of water for my dog, however the bowl was pretty dirty, would be nice to get a clean one without something floating in it. Also, a waiter made a sharp movement towards my dog so that my dog got irritated - I’m pretty sure he did it for a reason, looked like he wanted to annoy the dog and laugh. Not funny at all. I understand maybe he didn’t mean anything bad, but why do you have to make another creature to feel bad and anxious, why do you have to cause bad emotions for someone? And if you have to - please use someone else for it, not my dog. Overall, probably it’s still a nice place to relax and have a drink and some food. Maybe I just didn’t have the best experience. Despite everything, the service was friendly. I’d advice to make pricing more clear to avoid confusion.

Absolutely loved spending time at H&G. Our group enjoyed it so much, in fact, we came back the next day for breakfast again! Great people, beautiful atmosphere, and yummy food.

We ate lunch nearby & had cappuccino (we are foreigners), apple pie and Aragostella, they are all so good. The price is also very reasonable. Cuppa for 1,60, apple pie 1,50.

I went here with my two adult daughters in our recent trip to Lucca. The food was delicious, the service was good and friendly, and the location was great. Afterward, we rented bikes from nearby Poli and biked around the city wall and on top of the wall...it was wonderful! I still have the wish to have another Aragostella!

The staff was really friendly and welcoming, which made for a nice experience. The chocolate braid I tried was just okay — not bad, but nothing special. Everything else in the display case looked super tempting though! Prices were about average for the area. Worth a visit if you're nearby.

I am gluten free and they had loads of pastry options available. Was so delicious and as a coeliac I didn’t feel stressed or worried eating! Prices of the pastries were good but seems to be an extra 50 cents per item if you sit in and the drinks are quite expensive so maybe more of a take away option…

Super rude owner and staff. If you want to sit at the table outside you cannot bring it on your own from the bar but they will bring it to you and charge you extra for it. 15€ for a simple breakfast. Do not go there. Crazy tourist trap.

Average italien bar with café, pastries, croissants, cocktails and liquor at the north eastern area of the wall. Service was quick and very friendly. Location meeehh, right in front is a big parking and always busy cars and other wheels.

It’s such a shame, this place has decent coffee and cornetto at a reasonable price (€5 for two cornetti and one caffe). So imagine our shock when we paid €9 for three little pieces of dessert to take home (see photo), we expected them to be excellent. Unfortunately, they are not!!! The castagna was okay BUT the little chocolate cake was tasteless and hard as a rock. It was totally inedible…I never bin food but this one was impossible to eat. They shouldn’t sell old bake goods to customers, especially when they charge so much. Beyond disappointing.

I have been going for many years to this world class pasticcerie. Sandra does the most beautiful cakes - big and small. The breakfast pastries are the best I have ever tasted. And my favorite are the savory “sandwiches”. Lots of extra treats to buy. Cappuccino is amazing. Fresh orange juice delicious. It can get very busy but who cares? Place where every local who matters goes to from all walks of life. Wonderful family with a proud Lucchese tradition and history.

Amazing choice of delicious pastries, great coffee but what really stood out was the service. Sandra's father was very forthcoming and even switched to flawless English when he realised that we didn't speak Italian. He not only patiently explained the ingredients of the delicious pastries to us but he did that with every other customer too. A must visit if you are in the neighbourhood.

Incredible spot for lunch, super affordable, quick service, and a great daily menu. We came a few times and tried the farro, couscous, nettle gnocchi, and Caesar salad. The highlight for me was definitely the nettle gnocchi, something special I haven’t seen anywhere else. Also, they bring out a homemade black focaccia with every meal and it’s seriously delicious.

I got a coffee standing up, and the price was meant to be 1.40 Euros. When they started charging 3 Euros, I questioned it and she said that the price was old. She then accused me of sitting down and therefore charged me more. I had my coffee served at the bar. Pretty dodgy, and scammy.

From the outside it doesn't look promising, but it's a Very good restaurant! Plenty of gluten free options as seen in the picture: ravioli, tortellini, lasagna and chicken nuggets. Highly recommended.

Wow this is a real find, tucked in the shadow of the church of San Michele in Foro. Lots of locals there I would say. Staff very helpful. Got Aperol Spritz for €5 and they brought out a plate of snacks as well. Sat in this lovely square drinking aperitifs while watching some kids playing football with a beachball, like heaven on earth.

My local for a couple of months! There's lots of choice in Lucca but the staff were very friendly & the service was fantastic which kept me coming back. Quite often I'd be given a free plate of spuntini. I'll miss this place!

Stopped in Lucca for lunch for the day and found this hidden surprise. Employees were so courteous and thankfully spoke English very well. They were attentive and friendly. The food was really great. My friends and I had many different foods from the menu and we all left very happy.

Normally, it's really quite nice in here and the food is pretty good. We like our coffee to be really boiling hot, so asked for it to be boiling hot with little foam and an extra pot of hot water. Unfortunately, the coffee was cold and had lots of foam. The "pot" of water was actually a glass which made it really hard to pour into the coffee and it was also only luke warm. We were in a rush so didn't bother to do anything about it. On a more positive note, the pizza slice I had was very nice... although it could have been hotter :)

Awesome brunch! Here‘s a tip: if you come early, just ask for the brunch - don‘t make the mistake to think they‘re only a bakery. Personal recommendation: Avocado toast! It comes with salmon and scrambled eggs + you get a coffee, fresh orange juice and a waffle as dessert 😍

Really friendly staff, especially the lovely lady who is happy when vegans are happy. They offer more vegan ice-cream than just boring sorbet 😍 nocciola, pistacchio and arachidi / banane were all delicious.

GREAT & DIFFERENT ITALIAN FOOD On the corner of Piazza Napoleone with Via Veneto you will find a green terrace, shaded by the big building surrounding it. Service is great and fast, terrace is clean and well-kept, food is sooo good, visited by locals (a very very good thing) and greatly small prices . We had the Very Veggie Omlette (looked woow), Il Guanciale (tasted like Heaven in your mouth), water and a soda. PRICE: € 30

Terrible! Ordered drinks and just sat there waiting and watching other tables get their drinks. Asked about them - after waiting for 20 minutes - and the rather uninterested waiter shrugged and walked back in the bar. Still waiting and no sign of drinks 10 minutes later. They did bring out aperativo when we first arrived but that was terrible. Exceptionally dry bread, beef with salmon (there's a taste combination that shouldn't be together), some form of paté that can at best be described as white with green bits as it had no taste. Oops, got to go - 35 minutes after sitting at the table the drinks have just turned up... two very weak Aperol Spritz! Definitely not recommended.

We came today looking for the eggs, pancakes, and bacon that we had enjoyed a year ago and was also referenced in a Google Review, and were told they no longer offer that. I had a terrific panini here the other day for a quick lunch and we had a very good cappuccino today. The service in both experiences was terse.

A nice little place to get an early morning cappuccino. Edit: I had previously given this place five stars. This was before I got the bill. Two (albeit quite tasty) cappuccinos cost €3.40 a piece! So, I stick with the solid ambience, and the high quality coffee, but the price moves this down to four star territory!

Great place for apertivo. They give you a nice platter of snacks with your drink.

Makes me sad that such a charming place puts in such little effort with their food. Worth stopping for a drink but eat elsewhere. Frozen lasagne, sloppy cannelloni, they give you spray oil on the tables for pete’s sake!!

Convenient location in the middle of touristy part of Lucca. It is a Cafe and it should be looked up on as such. It an excellent spot to have a pastry with cup of coffee, or to have a glass of cold beer (or two) on the hot summer day.

The service was good, the atmosphere was ok. What attracted us to the place was the picture of house speciality, which looked like a big coffee with a beautiful layer of cream in a beautiful/fancy glass and the aroma of coffee wafting into the street. The flavor was alright, but the presentation wasn’t there and the treat we foresaw turned out to be a simple iced coffee, for the inflated price of 4.5 euro’s! Seriously?!

I enjoy specialty coffee, and came here only to buy coffee beans. Unfortunately there's no real choice of beans, the beans are dark roasted with no roast date, and are sold in a paper bag. So if you're looking for specialty coffee, I suggest going somewhere else. Note that it still might be a nice café!

A calm place on a pretty square. Coffee and desserts including tiramisu and sfoglia was delicious.

Went here to pick some raisin pastries. Those were very crunchy and soft with a tasty custard cream. Did not disappoint! :)

Food was excellent, we went there every morning for breakfast. The only thing that let it down was the service, it was always very busy and only had 1 or 2 people working. It was very difficult to get the waitresses attention to ask for something.

I discovered this little gem of a place my first morning in Lucca. I sat and ordered the Eggs Benedict. It was close to perfection. The real bacon here is some of the best I’ve ever eaten. You get a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice with every order. I went to have breakfast here every day i was in Lucca, and I had the omelette, the pancakes, they were all perfection. The staff is amazing and very attentive to your needs. The whole team is friendly and every detail is accounted for. If you need a break from the typical Italian breakfast and want a taste of an American breakfast this is the spot. It is the only place in Lucca I visited multiple times. I cannot say enough about this place.

Best spot in Lucca for breakfast and lunch!!! We were in Lucca for 5 days and went to this restaurant every day. I got something different everyday and it was all wonderful. I highly suggest the orange juice and cappuccino. I love that this is a family owned and operated business. The whole family is so friendly and accommodating.

This is a nice bookstore cafe close to the train station and therefore quite convenient and relaxing for that purpose. I’m glad I accidentally found this place.

Friendly staff, good coffee, and good food. Alot of students studying there which makes for a nice working atmosphere. Wifi was a little slow at times, although this is understandable due to the many people there. Plenty of charging plugs for computers, phones, and other electronics. Prices are also fair.

This year was my first time in Italy, and I had so many wonderful experiences. One of them, however, was at this wonderful place! I lodged nearby, and from July 24th - July 31st, I went to Tiffany's for breakfast every single day, and they took such good care of me. The staff are so kind and efficient. And their pastries and hot beverages are the best in town!!! I mean, when you talk about genuinely good people, this is the first place I think of!! So if you're ever in Lucca, you would be missing a wonderful experience if you did not stop through to Pasticceria Tiffany!! Sending everyone who works there soooo much love and light and the establishment continued success!!! I'm looking forward to seeing you all again in the future!

Great place for having breakfast! My husband and I arrived from Livorno Port really early, and we had here a lot of good coffee, mozzarella with tomatoe bread and chocolate bread too for breakfast. Everything was delicious and everyone was so nice.

I am often having an Italian breakfast there, cappuccino, coffee and a croissant (cornetto in Italian). Cappuccino is made with fresh milk, cornettos are fresh and coffee (espresso) tastes good. A choice of three newspapers (all Italian). Service is friendly, in the Italian/European way, which may appear a bit “unfriendly” to people coming from countries outside Europe. I usually pay around 4 euros for a cappucino, coffee and a cornetto, depending on the type of cornetto I order.

We live in Lucca. We love iur local bar. Great service, friendly staff. Our must "go to" bar every week. Very comfortable and the proprietor is always very kind to us.

The staff was rude from the start for no reason, food was undercooked and made my stomach hurt, they almost gave us undercooked chicken luckily we were able to reheat it, prices compared to the portions were atrocious at best. Would not recommend. TLDR: Horrible staff, Undercooked/horrible food and Atrocious prices.

The food was a joke, sorry. The burger patty had such a bad aftertaste, I don’t believe it was fresh. It was all smothered in a disgusting yellow “popcorn like” tasting sauce. Bacon wasn’t cooked, it was just so bad. The “burrito” was a bean mix in tortilla, not even wrapped properly so when my husband picked it up it went all over him. I would be embarrassed to even call this a mexican food. No thank you, this was -10 out of 10 for food. Good service

Disappointing Experience with Rude Service I had a very disappointing experience here. The sign outside clearly advertised that an aperitivo would accompany an alcoholic drink, but when we ordered (beers and wine), we were told we needed to purchase more expensive drinks to receive the food. The staff outright said they didn’t want to give us food if they weren’t making enough profit from our order. This kind of attitude is unacceptable and felt like a bait-and-switch. The staff was rude and dismissive when we asked for clarification, and the overall vibe was terrible. I would not recommend this place to anyone expecting good service or fair treatment.

We had a fantastic bacon cheese burger there today. It was really delicious. It was certainly not lean but my wife says it's among the best she's ever had. Nice staff as well. Nov 13, 2022 update. We went again today and were disappointed with the cheeseburger. It was somewhat overcooked and dry, and the quality of the meat was not very good or fresh...had pieces of grizzle. Also, their menu changed and we didn't see the Glam burger as an option. Won't go again. Changed rating from 5 stars from 2 previous visits to 3 stars today, and that's being generous.

Fab and open all day. Not just for burgers, it also has a little Mexican menu, and the simple but delicious Italian vegetables. When most other places in Lucca are closed this place is a real find, situated under the city walls on a nice streed, it has a decent sized seating area outside, with lovely lights and umbrellas. My bill for grilled vegetables, fried potatoes, and 2 glasses of wine, came to €23. Highly recommend.

When you love burgers and you visit Lucca. I guarantee you you get the best burger in your whole life. It is very delicious 😋. I was flashed. Go there. You never regret!! Believe me. I am 48 and have a lot of burgers in my life, but nothing like this.

I love the super friendly staff each time I go for the best vegan cornetto in this bar. The variety and the quality of their vegan cornetto is amazing. Highly recommend it for vegans. The soy coffee is absolutely amazing.

They overcharge tourists for coffee (2€ for a macchiato). A big offence in Italy. Go elsewhere. Credit to them for replying, however I had the coffee al banco, and in full view of the person that took the money.

A lovely bar/cafe/gelateria only 5 minutes east of the walls of Lucca. We had a delicious lunch of roast beef, potatoes and veggies, served alfresco in the beautiful covered patio at the back of the property. The pastries are really special as well - everything you could want including specialty cakes made to order. They also have a great selection of wines from Tuscany. They feature a big parking lot so you don't have to worry about scrambling to find parking. The service is kind and attentive, and they make the effort to make sure you are well taken care of. We will definitely be back!

We arrived very early in the afternoon and even though the kitchen was closed, they prepared some pasta and apetizers for us. Everything was delicious, especially the ice cream (try the “cremino”). Great experience!!!

Had an excellent lunch here with my husband and one year old. They kindly made a baby portion of the beef Ragu and we loved the shaded patio round the back of the restaurant. The gelato for dessert was to die for! I had chocolate and pistachio and the chocolate was so rich and decadent - the perfect hit for a chocoholic. The staff were also very helpful ordering us a taxi back to our hotel. Loved this place!

We really enjoyed our visit to Grelia. We stopped in for a late lunch, we all had pasta with bolognese sauce. (Offered to us but not on the menu). It was amazing, pasta was cooked to perfection and great flavour to the Bolognese. We sat across from the Gelato display so we had to have some for dessert. All the choices that we had were really good. We were served by Luca and he was amazing. We enjoyed our meal so much that we returned the next day for some pasta with a Pomodoro sauce. Of course we finished off with some more Gelato. Both days meals were excellent. Thanks so much Luca.

I specifically asked in English and Italian if the voldostana was vegetarian to which the owner said yes. However after eating half I looked down and there was prosciutto in it. I showed it to him and he said "Oh, I don't make it." I have been vegetarian for 5 years so this was a horrible and sickening experience. Not that anything could reverse this, but not even an apology was offered. Wish I could rate it zero stars.

I walk into this empty store and greet both the owners/employees in Italian...not a word of acknowledgement or smile or a nod. I was well dressed and friendly. I found a table and sat down. My friend joined me after 2 mins and he got the same rude treatment. We brushed it off as a one off and ordered a chicken sandwich and coffee. Food tasted like cardboard. To the owners: You are not the Savoy or the Ritz. So drop the attitude. You are a street café (with a broken toilet) in a village that thrives on tourism.
