The Museum of Times, located in a former palace with picturesque city views, displays the rich history of local watchmaking. This museum is a haven for history enthusiasts who can immerse themselves in the diverse collection of watches from different eras, almost like time travel. However, it might disappoint English-speaking visitors as explanations are only available in French. While the entry fee is reasonable at 5 units, admission may be free during certain times of the year.
Everything about watches and only about watches from the Middle Ages to quite perfect and modern models. If you have time and you will be in this city then you can visit this museum. Downstairs there is a cafe where you can drink wonderful coffee with cakes, that also look like clockwork.
Io L — Google review
When you’ve had enough of fine arts museums, this one is great. In a beautiful palace it displays tapestries, paintings and best of all time pieces and clocks.
Sophie C — Google review
Go to place for history lovers. As the name suggests, it’s a museum of times aka watches. You can see variety of watches from the past. It’s almost like a fun time travel experience. But there are no explanations in English only in french. And the entry fee of 5€ seems ok but I think depending on the season it’s free sometimes. I was a bit disappointed as the collection seems scattered. Nevertheless there are so many interesting watches to see. If you have time you can visit all the 3 floors. We were in a hurry so did not explore in detail.
Raj G — Google review
What a wonderful museum and a lovely giftshop.
Öykü A — Google review
Well worth a visit. Not a museum only about clocks or watches, but also some nice pieces of art.
Eduardo M — Google review
A beautiful museum about the watch making industry in Besancon. It has a lot of interesting watches from various centuries, some being truly incredible for their time. First two floors is only watches, while on the third floor you can find a huge layout of Besancon, and also the entrance in a tower from which you can see the whole city, with explanations for all the buildings.
Alex D — Google review
It's almost a time travel walking around the museum. Really good collection. For international travelers there should be English captions. Don't miss the souvenir store in the ground floor.

Nestled in the heart of Besançon, the Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology is a treasure trove for art enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Established in 1694, this unique museum boasts an impressive collection that spans from the Middle Ages to modern times, featuring masterpieces by renowned artists such as Goya, Picasso, and Courbet.
Very good regional museum with a variety of pieces from ancient Egypt to modern Impressionism. The building is in the old city center but completely modernized inside with a graphic open architecture. Unfortunately external visitors pay an extra tax compared to locals.
GentilDanseur G — Google review
Great archeological hall, beautifully displayed and presented, in French, English and German. I did not visit the rest of the museum as I came for the Roman mosaics. And the staff was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful I thoroughly recommend the placr

Great exhibits, well planned out and very varied displays like Ancient civilisations to contemporary Art.

The museum is much larger than expected and spent 3 hours walking around without noticing. The archeological portion was really fascinating and all exhibits were from the area. Huge collection of masterpieces and very informative descriptions with each. A must see.

Nice museum for an hour or two of wandering through. Navigating through the museum was a bit confusing at times but mostly good. Wonderful history.
Calum K — Google review
Great architecture, the renovations they did were totally worth it. Loved the paintings they have in there. Specially Gigoux and Courbet, who were both renowned painters from Besançon. Will definitely go back for more.
Filsan A — Google review
Plenty to see and enjoy, free entry for the month of August. It's a great collection, I'd recommend planning for at least 2 hours if interested in both the art and archaeology. Downside: details about the contents of the display are only written in French (but general information about the eras also given in English and German)

Parc de la Gare-d'Eau is a beautiful park along the Doubs river, offering a wonderful spot for picnics and leisurely strolls. It's a great place to relax and enjoy nature, with lovely views of the castle. Families can have a pleasant time here, although some visitors have noted that the restroom facilities are not well-maintained.
Great spot to have a picnic or for taking a stroll. The views of the castle are lovely and everything is well maintained.

Awesome place to have a picnic or you can hang out at the restaurant. We go with family and make a picnic. Lots of places to play with kids. If you need to go the bathroom it’s really low quality and closes before the restaurant does which is pretty terrible. Also, a fair amount of cigarette butts and trash on the grass.

Ancient Ruins
Square Castan is a fascinating archaeological site in Besancon, now converted into a public park. The informative plaque at the location reveals its origins in the Gallo-Roman period of Vesontio, presently known as Besancon. The preserved semicircular formation represents a theater from the late second or third century, while remnants of Saint John the Baptist church are also present.
It's really cool and chill. It has a pretty interesting background story of archeology and stuff. Would recommend to take a little break and observe nature (there's benches in the park and nice buildings all around). The monument in the middle of the whole place is quite tall and interesting. Try to read the inscriptions on the stones!!
Kate — Google review
Very laid-back location. Couple of banks to sit. Would preferes more texts about the history.
Öykü A — Google review

Io L — Google review
Very interesting archeological site which is also maintained as a public park. The information plaque displayed in the place indicates that it's date back to the Gallo-Roman period of a city once known as Vesontio which is now Besançon. The semicircular formation preserved is supposedly the remains of theatre dating back to the late second or third century. There was once the Saint John the Baptist church built on this site until the French Revolution. The most visible is the triumphal arch, Porte Noire and eight Corinthian columns. It's quite an impressive and interesting site to explore and suitable for all ages.

Fortress
Besançon Citadel is a 17th-century fortress designed by Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban, located on Mount Saint-Etienne in eastern France. The well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage site offers panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the Doubs River and nearby villages. It features imposing ramparts and towers, as well as a French resistance museum.
Very nice to visit. Prepare your feet if you go by walking. There is also a bus and a little train. Panorama is simply marvelous, and the exhibitions are nice. There monkeys at the entrance having sometime good fight between them.
Charles F — Google review
If you have a car, do drive up as there is parking. The ramparts are quite spectacular as is the citadel. The views are amazing. There are several museums within though I wasn’t impressed. No matter, it’s still worth it.
Sophie C — Google review
Great place, one ticket for heaps of different things. Definitely worth a visit for the whole family.
Everyonecantravel2024 Y — Google review
Not particularly beautiful but impressive still. The citadel is rich in history, fun for all ages with its animals, fort walls and numerous museums. Do not go on the walls if it is thundering, it will be dangerous. I recommend it if you are in the area.
Sollxbx — Google review
The fortress of Besançon is a must. Some areas can be visited for free but the visit is worth the entrance fees (views, museums, zoo, restaurant)
Barefoot C — Google review
A fantastic place to spend an afternoon! Google indicated that it would be closed on the Thursday before Easter but the website said it would be open so always check there. Every ticket person or office warned me about it closing in an hour (we arrived at 4pm) but this was enough time for me and my 4 year old to go around the ramparts and see an extensive amount. Love the fact that there's a zoo inside... What a brilliant use of such a big walled space! The wooden snake art installation was also great.
Natalya M — Google review
An unprepared visit turned out as a nice activity with the children. We were a bit late so we could not visit everything but we focused on the animals. It was a nice surprise to discover the Citadel has been re-invented as a zoo. We saw some unknown species that I had not seen before, especially some wonderfully colored frogs.
Henk V — Google review
Built, as it should be, on the top of a mountain, this citadel is an excellent example of military construction. Parking and bus stop is nearby. There are a couple of museums in the fortress, which, of course, I recommend visiting. There are also a couple of cafes to relax. Well, what especially surprised us and turned out to be very pleasant was the presence of a small zoo on the territory of the fortress. Here you can see tigers and lions and some other animals. And here there is a great opportunity to look from the fortress wall at the nearby surroundings. If you are in the city, be sure to visit this fortress.

Cathédrale Saint-Jean de Besançon is a stunning Catholic place of worship with intricate features dating back to the 11th to the 19th centuries. Located in picturesque Ville Haute, it boasts an impressive astronomical clock at the base of its 18th-century bell tower, featuring 30,000 moving parts and 57 clock faces. This ornate gadget not only tells time but also indicates tides in French ports and time in various places around the world.
Magnificent building. Its on the way to the citadelle and its difficult to park the car
Artur V — Google review
A beautiful cathedral, with amazing glass windows. It was very well designed. Every inch left me with ane awe.
Öykü A — Google review
The Saint John's cathedral of Besançon is a gorgeous edifice (especially the beauty of the apses). The cathedral is filled by the History: The humanist Erasmus, the king Louis XIV came. The author Stendhal inspired in his novel "The Red and the Black "and his character Julien Sorel. ... Discover aswell the astronomical clock(in overhaul actually).
Patrice B — Google review
Lovely cathedral. Unfortunately, the bell tower was covered in scaffolding (December 2018) but it was delightful all the same. You absolutely must stop by the astronomical clock while you're there for a guided tour! It's one of the four principal astronomical clocks in France.
Thomas P — Google review
most beautiful church from the area, worth to visit
Andre S — Google review
A beautiful, historic cathedral which has been through many iterations since the 5th century. Many magnificent pieces of art and the stained glass is beautiful. The simple exterior belies the beauty of the interior
Alan P — Google review
This cathedral to me is a rarity in terms of structure, architecture style and an interior that just blows all experience and expectations! The history of this church traced back to the twelfth century and it's construction up to the eighteenth century. It's spectacular because I could observe the combination of romanesque, gothic and baroque in this stupendously magnificent church. My experience started from the Porte Noire when the first view of the façades becomes evident. Inside is just out of this world! It's so unique to this cathedral to have two Apse, one in the front and one at the back. The back Apse is just mind blowing. The liturgical Apse in the front is on two elevations with seven Romanesque windows and seven bays of Gothic style. The two Apse are connected by a stunning nave with several chapels alongside the the aisles (especially the left if you are facing the front liturgical Apse. I could spend hours just meticulously exploring this cathedral but... It's easily accessible from the city centre by foot. I'm not familiar with public transportation of Besançon but I'm sure you can get information from the tourism office. This is an absolute must visit cathedral if you are ever visiting Besançon. I'm currently staying in Dijon and it was pretty easy by train to and from Besançon. Suitable for all ages. I didn't notice a ramp entrance for wheelchair though. Oh, and the bell tower was under renovations when I visited.

Nestled in the picturesque city of Besançon, Victor Hugo's birthplace stands as a tribute to one of France's most celebrated literary figures. This charming museum invites visitors to delve into Hugo's life and works through an array of personal artifacts, manuscripts, and artwork that reflect his profound themes of freedom and dignity. Each room is thoughtfully curated around different aspects of his legacy, allowing guests to appreciate the depth of his contributions to literature.
We entered here by accident and curiositt. Helpful personal. When we entered they gave us plenty of information about the city and the museum which we were watched for free since the museum had a special day for entrance. In the 2nd floor you can see plenty of books of Hugo in different languages that were brought by visitors of the museum. So maybe you could bring one on your language?

History museum
The Museum of the Resistance and Deportation in Besancon is a popular attraction, along with other museums in the area. The museum predominantly features information in French, so it's advisable to get an audio guide if you're English-speaking. It houses a wealth of historical photos and artifacts, offering insights into the experiences of those who were sent to concentration camps and the sacrifices made by the resistance during WWII.
Informative displays set the scene for the second world war and explain its causes. The area that I connected with was the stories of the lives of the people who were part of the resistance.
Janet D — Google review
English, French and German languages. Compelling historical narrative alongside interesting artefacts. A pity so few people were visiting it.
Robert W — Google review
Our visit to the citadel lasted virtually all of the day's opening hours, but there was a significant part we didn't get to. We followed the audio tour of the citadel, had lunch then visited the Museum of Resistance and Deportation, which didn't leave us with enough time to visit the other on site museums. The effect of occupation on the lives of citizens and their responses is well presented with many personal artifacts adding to the effect of drawing the visitor in, to give a sense of the people who's stories are told. The current temporary exhibition is entitled "Valise" and looks at how an everyday object can, on the one hand, contain a person's entire worldly goods with everything else lost, be used as a means of survival carrying black market goods, or as a means of fighting back against the oppressor by carrying printing equipment to forge passes or produce propaganda, or concealing radio equipment that can be used to send and receive information that can help to turn the tables. This exhibition also brought to mind an area of history that particularly interests me, that of escape and evasion. Probably the most valuable piece of equipment that an escaping PoW could possess was a suitcase for, no matter how good forged paperwork might be, travelling a long distance empty handed was bound to arouse suspicion. A second thing was an escapee (I think from Colditz) who realised that the Gestapo were with the regular guards at a railway station thoroughly checking everyone; in a stroke of genius he stole someone's suitcase and ran off with it without chase, for a far more important task was at hand searching for an escaping PoW than to waste time on a petty thief.
Andrew W — Google review
Almost everything is in French, so worth grabbing an audio guide if you're English. A lot of information and historical photos and artifacts. The Citadel housing this museum was used to hold and execute POWs during WWII, adding extra weight to the location. Worth going out of your way to visit if you're in the area at all.
Shayne F — Google review
Excellent museum, well thought and documented, with a focus on Besancon and surrounding regions. Takes about 1h45 minutes to get through everything.
Charles O — Google review

The Astronomical Clock in Besancon, designed by Auguste-Lucient Verite, is a remarkable masterpiece commissioned by Cardinal Mathieu in the 19th century. This 5.8m high and 2.5m wide clock symbolizes the Resurrection of Christ with its intricate design and mechanical precision.
Wow, what a beaut! This clock has been incredibly well preserved and the guided tours are top-notch. The tours start 10 minutes before the hour so you can see the big hooplah that occurs when the clock strikes the hours. The docent is thoroughly knowledgeable of the clock's history and inner-workings. As it is one of the four major astronomical clocks in France, it would be a mistake to skip out on a visit here- so worth the couple euros!.
Thomas P — Google review
Nice to see and understand. So many complications. Careful as when we visited in May the clock was stopped for maintenance.
Charles F — Google review
The clock is now in restoration till 2030. This did not detract from the experience of viewing this amazing piece of machinery created by an amazing autodidact. The Museum attendee gave a wonderful presentation about the clock and all of its functions. She was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions.

An absolute marvel of clockwork. One must go through the cathedral main doors and through and up a passage way to a room where the clockwork is found. Or you can go up the stairs on the outside and on the right side of the cathedral. Although there's a page of explanation in English the discussion is entirely in French.

Sadly when we arrived the astronomical clock was closed and apparently undergoing extensive renovation. The rush hour traffic only made the experience more frustrating. We spent over an hour and a half getting in and out of the city. I must research these attractions more thoroughly to avoid such an unpleasant experience

Marché Des Beaux Arts is a small yet diverse indoor market that offers an array of fresh produce including vegetables, fruits, meats, and fish. It also boasts a range of delicacies and prepared foods. The market features impressive stalls with top-notch quality products, making it an ideal destination for purchasing high-quality meat and various food items. With its superb hall, Marché Des Beaux Arts provides customers with ample choices to prepare delicious home-cooked meals.
The market located on the square, in the middle of the tables, attracts gourmets and regulars looking for fresh products. Up to seven traders per day, they present their specialties and color the morning of passers-by with their fruits and vegetables, their meats, beehive products, bottles of wine, breads, seafood products or grocery store sweets.

Not a complete rip-off as some of the French indoor markets are (greetings to Lyon), yet not your old-fashioned friendly street market either. Everything is on pricey side, green grocer stalls especially. The most disappointing is that the regional trademark Comté cheese is often stalled, having bitterish taste, which it definitely should not (common problem with all the cheese shops there). Probably it is due to low/unstable demand, but cmon guys, it is should be a point of your pride, no? Hardly any tourist has an opportunity to visit some village fruitière to taste the real deal.

Inside, visitors will find an impressive interior adorned with numerous exquisite artworks and a remarkable wooden liturgical choir featuring the original Station of the Cross.

What strikes me the most about this church is its very tall belfry tower (about seventy metres Including the the cross) and the unusual façade. This is right in the heart of the old city of Besançon, the Boucle district and right opposite the city hall. It's an impressive interior with many rare work of art and the original Station of the Cross with stunning woodwork of the liturgical choir. A magnificent building that is also a listed national monument. One of the many attractions to visit and explore in Besançon. Suitable for all ages and backgrounds. Good pool but no lane outside of lunch hours. When asking the team, they laugh at your face and say that swimmers should come in the morning. To the argument that it is dangerous to let swimmer in the middle of kids they reply that it costs money if the line breaks while kids play with it.

(Translated by Google) Disappointing, avoid: an old-fashioned pool where entry costs 5 euros even though it's never been renovated, and no hot shower. Given the price, a solar shower would quickly pay for itself!! But what do they do with the profit? The lifeguards don't enforce the rules; many people dive in, almost landing on swimmers, and it seems normal. People smoke inside. Shorts aren't allowed, which is a good thing, but it still needs to be applied to everyone. Lots of hair in the water; hygiene needs to be improved. The slabs along the pool are raised, so be careful not to trip. And the town hall seems to approve of such an establishment.

(Translated by Google) I like the Mallarmé swimming pool, the pool is 4 meters deep and you get a good feeling when swimming. The increased depth of the pool helps the lane lines dissipate water mixing, creating less hydrodynamic drag.

(Translated by Google) The pool is really well designed. 50 m long and 4 m deep at its deepest. This also allows for freediving. There are almost always dedicated lanes for fins and paddles. There is a children's pool with a maximum depth of less than 1.5 m. Usable even for the very young. You can enjoy three diving boards at 1 m, 3 m, and 5 m, but keep an eye on their opening days and times, as this isn't always the case. The hygiene is absolutely impeccable. Everything is spotless and constantly cleaned. The staff is always busy and very friendly. The lifeguards are always available to offer advice, and the lifeguards are very vigilant. Always focused, and they've never been seen looking at a phone while they're on duty. In short, it's always pleasant. However, check the opening hours, as they're not open all day.

(Translated by Google) In this pool, as in all the pools in Besançon (La Fayette, Chalezeule when it's open in the summer, Port Joint when it's open in the summer), there are often far too many people (by sight over 100 people at the same time this morning, making it impossible to swim a length without having to move several times). The pools aren't heated enough (both pools are cold, even the small pool, which is warmer than the other). Every time you come out feeling cold because, in addition, the ambient air isn't heated enough, there's no soap to wash with, not enough lanes for Besançon, and the pool is dilapidated. Paper tickets expire on June 15th, and there's no information by email or on the town hall website. Only physical signs are available, so if you don't go, it's impossible to know! That's 7 tickets lost. And you need 4 different tickets for Besançon's 4 swimming pools, even though they're all operated by the local authority. When will there be much longer opening hours to regulate the overcrowding and to offer more options to the population (the opening hours are too limited), and eventually the opening of a modern complex, which the city so desperately needs? Finally, if you're a swimmer and want to swim recreationally, it's unfortunately impossible in Besançon, or you have to be incredibly motivated and accept being lined up 12 people at a time? I don't exactly count the number of people per line, and even then, plenty of them gave up a long time ago! I love swimming, and yet every time I leave a pool in Besançon, it's annoying because of the crowds, the water temperature, and the opening hours. It's deplorable.
