Art museum
Museums
Kunstmuseum Basel, also known as the Fine Art Museum, is a renowned art institution with an extensive collection spanning from the 15th to the 21st century. It features works by Holbein and other regional artists from different periods. The museum is part of Basel's rich cultural scene, which includes various privately funded museums and galleries. Visitors can explore diverse experiences such as the Pharmacy Museum, Cartoon Museum, and Paper Mill Museum.
Honestly, an amazing art museum in Basel. I would say this is my favorite museum that I went to while visiting this beautiful city and would highly recommend to any museum or art fan to do the same. They have tons of classic works by world famous artists as well as artists that I’ve never heard of. The works spans many countries and many generations and it’s a huge wealth of knowledge and beauty to see in one visit. It would be easy to spend over four hours here but we spent about 2 1/2 hours really soaking in everything. It’s three main floors divided into different time periods and art styles and on the bottom floor they have a really nice café where we enjoyed some lattes before heading out into the rain. Pricing is fair and the building is large and beautiful. No bags or umbrellas are allowed, but they have lockers right at the front entrance for free for you to place your valuables. They are also really lenient about photography just as long as you don’t use flash. The entire staff was very polite and I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Basel to check this place out.

Wow! We wish we had had more time to see all the amazing art! Quiet and clean. Lockers for backpacks- easy to use. Put this on your to do list when you are in Basel. Give yourself 3 hours at least.
Allie B — Google review
This museum is truly the treasure of Switzerland, imagine MoMA & The Met combined in one address. As an active art lover and collector, I have not spent too much time in this museum before unfortunately, as I had only been there for events during Art Basel week. Finally I had the chance to come back to Basel and dedicate some time for a thorough visit and viewing last week, and it was for nearly 6 hours, and every moment was well spent. The museums have two buildings connected by an underground tunnel, with vast permanent collections from Renaissance & Early Modern (15th-16th c.) with strong holdings from the Upper Rhine: Hans Holbein the Younger, the Amerbach Cabinet origins; 17th-18th Centuries, Flemish and Dutch masters (like Rubens, Rembrandt); 19th Century of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Symbolism. Simply impressive collections from Monet, Cézanne, Manet, Van Gogh. Swiss artists too, such as Ferdinand Hodler. Then the 20th Century including major movement coverage: Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Constructivism with Important works from artists: Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian etc. The collections from this era at this museum impressed me the most this time! The Post Modern / contemporary collections are also worthy investigating, from Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Helen Frankenthaler, Miriam Cahn, Dan Flavin, Kara Walker, Bruce Nauman, Calder and more. There are plenty of rooms to wonder with comfortable sofas in and out the exhibition halls, so you could really take time to experience the art, and it is never too crowded with too many phone cameras or noises around. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, very refreshing especially compared with other major museums around the world. Highly recommend it for art enthusiasts, families and it is a must visit when in Basel.
Andrew P — Google review
wonderful museum in the heart of Basel city. The two buildings offer a wider variety of historic and contemporary art. Well curated . Definitely a must go for a Basel visit.
C. B — Google review
The entry price is quite high, but if you’re into modern and contemporary art, there’s plenty to explore. The collection includes works by Picasso,Van Gogh, Kandinsky, and Holbein, among other major names. The architecture itself is impressive. clean, modern, and beautifully designed. Worth visiting if you enjoy art museums.
Beril D — Google review
The paintings were good but to be honest they were not great! It felt mediaeval and repeated with the paintings and the work structures. The museum has an old museum and the new and of the two, I think the new section is good. Because of the reviews and recommendations on Google, one gets eager and also excited to visit this museum but for me it was just an ordinary museum with no great paintings on display. However the most humane and exceptional part of the museum visit are the people who manage the ticket counters and offices. They are kind, gracious and always always ready to help and assist. I would remember the visit to the most gracious lady sitting at the ticket counter, who asked me to check for the Basel card and advised me to call the hotel for the digital copy to save me some money. Also at the same time a couple offering me to share their card with me, even asking me if they can pay half the amount for me. That was generous of them, I assured them that money is not the issue but the kind lady just wanted to save my money. I got the card through my mail in about 15 minutes and more than me the lady at the counter was happy. That's the beauty of Basel and its people! I took the tour and was happy to not miss it because it was more than a tour for me. The building is amazingly attractive and thoughtfully built. The surrounding area is just like another place within the old World charm of that area, just a few minutes away from the munster!
Neemi T — Google review
This was the most humiliating and hostile museum experience I have ever had. An employee wrongly accused me of taking a photo, which I was not, then followed me upstairs. He walked back and forth with another staff member, laughing and staring at me. Later, he deliberately waited for me, locked eyes, and stood there until I spoke. When I asked why he was staring, we had a full conversation where he mocked me, laughed at me, and bullied me instead of acting professionally. It felt like he wanted to provoke me into a confrontation. I am a quiet, respectful visitor, and it felt like he singled me out as an easy person to intimidate. Instead of enjoying the art, I was harassed until I left the museum in tears. For such an expensive ticket, this treatment is completely unacceptable. A museum should be a place of inspiration and safety, not surveillance, intimidation, and humiliation. I strongly recommend avoiding this museum if you expect basic respect as a visitor.
Mariah — Google review
It's nice. Not outstanding. The collection is a bit of a random mix and it's curated in a strange way. Not that much art really, but I did like the medieval art they had.

Zoo
Outdoor Activities
Established in 1874, Zoo Basel is the oldest zoo in Switzerland and a must-visit attraction. Known as "Zolli" by locals, it houses a diverse range of animals including gorillas, snow leopards, lions, elephants, giraffes, and chimpanzees. The well-maintained park offers a pleasant summer stroll while the animal houses and vivarium are popular during winter.
A compact zoo by size but full of animals. It's way easier to get through this than the one in Zurich if you're with small kids. The aquarium is gorgeous!
B D — Google review
This zoo os great with kids. The surounding are made with so many details in mind, everything is green when you walk around. My kids and I loved it. There is great food stations too, amany animals. Especially the aquarium part is super big and nice too. The only downside, its in the middle of the city of Basel, a little hard to get too.
Simon — Google review
Love love this place- I went pretty late (4-6pm). Although I skipped the crowds, some of the animals were already in their enclosures (not in exhibit), but it didn’t detract from my joy of being there. Loved the vivarium, farm animals, snow leopard, flamingos, meerkats, and penguins. I would have loved to be able to see the new hippo baby though :(.
Karen D — Google review
Zoo was good for a city zoo. I don't want to spoil it so only posted a miniscule amount of photos. I loved going into the bird house. It had some levels to it so find the elevator or stairs. Spent from just after 9am until 4pm.
Fran B — Google review
It is very convenient. With stroller we could go through the whole Zoo. We were lucky we could see all the animals. They have huge space in the restaurant & also banks everywhere to sit.
Diana D — Google review
A very nice zoo – not too big, not too small. There’s a great variety of animals, and even on rainy days you can enjoy several indoor areas. We always love coming here!
Lika B — Google review
It's a very strange and beautiful place. They let the penguins walk freely in the zoo. However, the path was very clean. The staff there were very kind. Everything was good. I was there for 6 hours and I didn't want to leave at all. It was very enjoyable to be with the animals. I wish they were free in the wild, but the animals are having fun there too. The animals are definitely happy there. I recommend you to go there to enjoy being with nature.
M K — Google review
What a lovely zoo- lots to see with a variety of animals. I particularly liked the giraffe enclosure. There was also a lovely coffee shop and gift shop near the entrance.

Museum Tinguely in Basel, Switzerland, is a tribute to the renowned Swiss artist Jean Tinguely. The museum boasts the world's largest collection of Tinguely's art, featuring a permanent exhibition showcasing his work over four decades. Additionally, it hosts temporary exhibitions that not only highlight Tinguely's influence but also shed light on other modern artists who inspired him. This museum offers a unique and impressive experience for art enthusiasts visiting Basel.
The Tinguely Museum is truly a wondrous place. The building itself is a masterpiece, towering over the river. You may have read about the works online or seen some of them. But only when you step inside and stand before the machines, watching their whirring and creaking, and seeing the intense sense of patchwork from the scrap metal, can you truly appreciate their wonder. It's a barren, dilapidated, yet vibrant work of art, brimming with wondrous imagination.
Joseph B — Google review
Might be too slow for the kids today but it was nice to slow down soo how imagination can create art out of trash. We really enjoyed the souvenir shop (great selection!) and the cafe which was a nice place to rest after walking around. They had no food except for ice pops but the chocolate banana was great. The

I recently visited Museum Tinguely in Basel, and it was an absolute delight! The museum’s playful energy and interactive exhibits make it stand out from traditional art museums. Jean Tinguely’s kinetic sculptures are full of motion, sound, and humor — they truly come to life right before your eyes. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and the riverside location adds a lovely atmosphere. Whether you’re an art lover or just curious, Museum Tinguely is a fun, inspiring experience that sparks creativity in visitors of all ages. Highly recommended!

Super unique place, interesting experience, mega cool atmosphere and friendly staff. Definitely must visit museum. Every Thursday it is open till 21:00 and it is free of charge after 18:00.
Ye P — Google review
Very cool museum. The temporary exhibit was very cool (and slightly off-putting) and I'd love to see more of the artists they bring in.
Maeve J — Google review
Was very good, the fixed exhibition about Tinguely is very interesting, good explanatory text, good shop as well, many creations of his on display. Staff speak English fluently, no problem communicating as a tourist. Very recommended 👏👏
Daniel L — Google review
We visited the Museum Tinguely in Basel and really enjoyed it. The lady on the front desk was incredibly helpful and kindly stored our luggage while we explored, which made things so much easier. The museum itself is fascinating; full of quirky, inventive kinetic artworks that are both playful and thought-provoking. It’s one of those places where you can’t help but smile as you walk around. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Basel.

An amazing collection of "art" which might also be described as junk! Lots of working exhibits and some films telling the story of Jean Tinguely.

Nestled in the heart of Basel, Switzerland, the Toy Worlds Museum Basel is a captivating attraction dedicated to the world of toys. Originally known as the Dollhouse Museum Basel, this enchanting museum boasts a vast collection of dolls, teddy bears, and miniature toy exhibits displayed across four floors. Established in 1996, it offers visitors a nostalgic journey through various eras and cultures with its charming exhibits and interactive displays.
We’ve got the Basel card which gave us 50% discount on adult tickets. Kids under 12yo - free admission. My son was given a tablet which gives an interactive child friendly explanation of the toy history etc. Clean washrooms, good floor layout, interactive areas - even for grownups. I enjoyed the lego animation. :) Overall, well worth your time and money.
Michelle S — Google review
This is an incredible museum with thousands of historical toys, especially Teddy bears, well worth to visit. The exhibition is displayed over several floors and it takes at least one hour to visit the museum. The free tablet that is given at the entrance is mainly aimed at children with interactive stories and characters from the exhibit talking. It got pretty noisy and crowded as we were visiting on a holiday plus there was an activity lab for children blocking part of the floor. Being interested in the historical part, we would have appreciated more background information about the history of the toys, the toy firms and even some of the items that were on display with more info to read on the windows, an audio guide or a pamphlet.
Monica P — Google review
This is as good as it comes!! Price was low I pads are provided that can be connected to explanations of several points through out the displays were very well done. Several geographic points of origin were included. Gift shop has real collectible inventory, not junk. Staff was extremely helpful. Organization was superior and displays were excellent.
Daniel S — Google review
The Museum has 4 interactive floors of marvelous vintage toys on display. When you receive your ticket, you will also receive a tablet to scan bar codes at several displays. The interactive journey can be in several languages, though after a while, you may be more interested in examining the impressive detail of the display. They also have free lockers for you to lock up your bags. The Museum can be missed if you dont speak German but Google maps stirred me to the right direction.
Shakirah K — Google review
This museum exceeded my expectations. There are thousands of toys from different eras, and each floor follows a different theme. With the BaselCard, the ticket price drops by half, which is great. At the entrance they give you a tablet; you can scan the QR codes throughout the museum to read detailed stories and explanations. It was informative, nostalgic, and overall a wonderful experience.
Beril D — Google review
Nice museum for kids and adults, amazing collection of toys, teddy bears, dolls houses etc, my daughters enjoyed the interactive tour with some toys coming into life through an iPad.. and the arts and crafts station. The museum staff were just amazing! It was a great part of our trip to basel!
Nasreen H — Google review
Delightful museum with a few very kind and friendly staff. Four floors, with SO much to see on each, with many intricate miniatures and doll’s houses mainly from the 1800s onwards. A great variety of dolls and plush teddy bears too, carefully and imaginatively arranged in large glass cases. More curious esoteric models on Floor 1, including a torture chamber…! For smaller folk there are fairly large play areas of Duplo, a very generous amount of Lego and Lego Technic on Floor 3. Tickets come with a free interactive tablet guide with strap to make it easier to carry. Visitors scan a QR code at various points and an entertaining VR animation appears with historical info on the piece, likely to be of interest to slightly older children. An overall thoughtfully presented museum. Benches dotted around each section, and the environment is very clean. Could have spent more than the two hours I had there quite easily. Note: The main shop at entrance is very small, and only sells a handful of miniatures. Plushes are also very modern, and not reminiscent of the styles in the museum. Second section tucked away had a minimum spend of 10 CHF (if I recall correctly) when paying by card, so remember to bring cash for postcards and small items.

Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
Mittlere Brücke, also known as Middle Bridge, is a historic stone bridge in Basel, Switzerland. It has been an iconic sight since its construction in 1226 and offers stunning views of the river and surrounding architecture. The bridge was initially built as a crucial link for traders traveling through the Gotthard Pass. Over time, it became a symbol of the city's rich history.
We came to visit Basel from Germany for one day. The city is very beautiful, but driving around is quite problematic. There are so many cyclists everywhere, and it creates a lot of stress. Everything in Basel felt expensive to us. I had heard before that Switzerland is expensive, and it’s true. Healthy food is only available in markets and such. Restaurants are extremely expensive and open very late. We were there on a Friday and walked a lot just to find a Turkish restaurant. When we got there, they told us that dinner is served at 5 PM and asked us to come back then. The person also said that most places in Basel are like this. We ended up just having a coffee and leaving. So honestly, we wandered around all day hungry. Later, we had a beef sausage at a market — we paid 8 francs for it. It tasted so bad. Unfortunately, we were really disappointed with the food, and everything was extremely expensive.
Özlem C — Google review
Lovely bridge to cross with river Rhine below. It is so different to see people floating here with their waterproof swim bags. It looked awesome in the blazing summer heat.
Mrs P — Google review
Beautiful historic bridge with great views of both the medieval city and the Rhine. You can take a water taxi and see more of the city. Safe to walk on the bridge while cars are driving due to the sidewalk on either end of the bridge.
Debbie M — Google review
11/10 Always a delight to walk or run here, I’ve been there several times a day and admire the beauty around, specially during the sunrise and sunset. It’s a must visit to take in the beauty and it’s a landmark of the city that is engraved in the souvenirs. Next to the bridge there are several coffee place to hang out. In summer you can also swim or just sit around the beach and on stairs.
Euro I — Google review
The middle Rhine River bridge, connects the old and new town area, was built from 1903 to 1905, to replace the old and original wooden bridge. Not just because it's historical landmark value, but in the middle of the bridge, there's a little sign with several faces and lines of words, which states " Basel commemorates the people who were accused, persecuted, tortured, and killed for witchcraft in earlier centuries". And they also want to remind everyone that it's very important to always appreciate different opinions.
Bill L — Google review
Schön Brücke in Basel-Stadt. Great Place to walk and feel the city. Was lucky to see a parade during Eurovision in which tradition germanic folk groups were performing.

Spalentor is a majestic 15th-century gateway that stands as one of the three remaining structures from the ancient walls of the city. It is located in Basel, a city known for its significance in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, with major companies like Novartis and Hoffmann-La Roche being among Switzerland's largest employers.
I love how the gate gives you a glimpse straight into Basel’s Old Town, it's honestly so cute and full of charm. The architecture is stunning, and the little details on the façade make it feel like a storybook entrance. A lovely stop for history lovers and wanderers alike!
Yvette T — Google review
I stopped by Spalentor in Basel during the day, and it was pretty neat! The gate’s old and solid, with red walls and round towers—you can tell it was built to last. There weren’t too many people, not too few either—just chill, no crowd. I stood there, checking it out, thinking about how it used to guard the city. You can feel the history. Plus, the streets around it are nice for a walk. Worth a look in Basel!
Illia L — Google review
The Basel Gate, built in the 13th century, is one of the three city gates that have survived to the present day. It is regarded as the most beautiful city gate in Switzerland. As you pass through the gate toward the Old Town, you can truly feel the authentic medieval atmosphere — narrow stone streets, ancient façades, and a quiet charm that takes you back in time. The surrounding buildings complement the gate perfectly, creating a harmonious scene that reflects Basel’s rich architectural heritage.
Coşkun S — Google review

The Basler Münster, also known as Basel Minster, is a stunning Gothic-style Protestant cathedral with origins dating back to the 9th century. Its red sandstone walls, colorful roof tiles, and twin towers make it an iconic landmark in Basel. The cathedral's construction spanned several centuries and features a mix of Romantic and Gothic styles. Destroyed in an earthquake in 1356, the impressive structure was rebuilt and converted into a Reformed Protestant Church.
Fantastic views from the top of Basel Munster! It costs 6 CHF to go to the top and there is an opportunity to get magnificent views out at different levels as well as a two towers! The cathedral itself is beautiful and I would recommend a walk around before heading up the towers!
Ben S — Google review
Definitely worth the visit, the building is beautifully crafted. If you walk behind the building you will have an excellent view overlooking the River. Lots of people were having picnics and relaxing here.
Mrs P — Google review
Solo travelers are not allowed to climb the towers, for suicide prevention reasons. You can find another tourist and ask to accompany them, but without the employee seeing this. Don't let them know you are strangers. There's a small fee to climb the towers and it's well worth it. Basel Minster was built between the 11th and 16th centuries in a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. After the 1356 earthquake, it was significantly rebuilt incorporating Gothic elements such as pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and large stained-glass windows. The cathedral is made of red sandstone and is notable for its two main towers, St. George’s and St. Martin’s, and its patterned tile roof. The Minster served as the Catholic cathedral until the Reformation in 1529, after which it became a Reformed Protestant church. The Gallus Gate at Basel Minster is the oldest Romanesque figure portal in the German-speaking world, built around 1185. In the tympanum is Christ as Judge of the World, accompanied by Peter and a donor figure, while the lintel below shows the Parable of the Ten Virgins. During the Reformation in Basel (1529), iconoclasm took place at Basel Minster as part of the city’s shift from Catholicism to Protestantism. Religious images, statues, and altars that were seen as idolatrous were removed or destroyed. The interior today remains relatively bare compared to its original medieval design.

It was originally built in the 1000’s as a Roman Catholic Cathedral and became a Protestant church. There’s no fee to get in the church but there’s a fee to go up the top. Behind the church is the Rhine River.
Mary A — Google review
Don’t miss the chance to reach the top of the church. While climbing, it might seem like you’ve reached the end, but be sure to check—there’s a good chance there’s a way to go even higher."
A N — Google review
Had a free walk around then spotted people paying to go up the towers. We tried this for a small charge and it's well worth the steep steps to go to the 3 levels available. Bit tight at times depending on how many people go up but numbers are controlled.

A very beautiful and nice cathedral! You can have an amazing view over Basel from the top!
Codrin G — Google review
Basel Minster is absolutely worth a visit! I’ve climbed several church towers across Switzerland, but this one had the narrowest spire staircase I’ve ever squeezed through! It’s a bit of a tight spiral toward the top, but that only adds to the adventure. Once you reach the viewing platform, you’re rewarded with panoramic views of Basel, the Rhine, and even into France and Germany on a clear day. The cathedral itself is beautifully maintained, with intricate stonework and a peaceful courtyard. It’s a perfect mix of charm, challenge, and postcard-worthy scenery. Don’t miss it!

Tinguely-Brunnen, created in 1977 by Swiss artist Jean Tinguely, is a captivating fusion of sculptural machines and water. Situated on the site of the old city theatre company's stage, this modern landmark features ten iron figures powered by low-voltage current, seemingly playing in the shallow fountain lined with black asphalt. The mechanical figures are in constant motion and interaction with each other, reminiscent of the performers who once graced the theater stage.
5 stars Quirky, kinetic, and completely captivating. The Tinguely Fountain is one of those spots that’s both whimsical and thought-provoking—a perfect blend of art and motion right in the heart of Basel. I stumbled on it by chance and ended up staying far longer than expected, just watching the sculptures come to life. A must-see if you appreciate creativity with a playful twist. Bonus: it’s totally free and photogenic in any season.
Jennifer F — Google review
A Splash of Genius and Madness – Tinguely Fountain If Salvador Dalí and Rube Goldberg had teamed up to build a fountain after a night out in Basel, this might be the result. Tinguely Fountain isn’t your average “stand-and-stare” kind of fountain. Nope. It’s a bunch of metal creatures, built from what looks like leftover parts from an old theater backstage, dancing and splashing around like they’re alive—and possibly a little tipsy. Created by the Swiss artist Jean Tinguely in the late 1970s (clearly ahead of his time… or out of it), this kinetic fountain moves, squirts, spins, wobbles, and somehow perfectly captures the chaotic joy of creativity. Each piece has its own rhythm, like a rusty ballet with water jets. I loved how playful and unpredictable it was—like the fountain has a sense of humor. Don’t expect a peaceful moment of reflection here; expect to smile, get splashed, and maybe question the laws of physics. Located right in front of the Basel Theater, it’s basically the city’s most artistic water fight. A must-see if you enjoy quirky, clever art that doesn’t take itself too seriously (and neither should you). 💧 Pro tip: Go when it’s sunny. Watching water fly through the air in golden light is magical. Just don’t stand too close unless you brought a towel.

Fantastic art installion! The sculptures move in rhythmic harmony, spraying water with wondrous abandon. Brutally mechanical and comforting in one experience. A must see when visiting Basel.

It's ingenious. We visited on a very hot day so it was nice to sit I a shaded area and enjoy the mechanics as well as the coolness of the water close to us.

Brilliant fountain in the centre of Basel comprising moving sculptures which squirt water designed by Jean Tinguely in 1977. Well worth a visit!

The Tinguely Fountain is a delightful blend of art and engineering. These kinetic sculptures resembles dancers, each moving in its own unique way. I love it when the sun hits just right and you keep seeing rainbows forming all over the fountain, I think the best time to visit is around 5pm+ when the sun is hanging low!

Located in the picturesque Rhine River Valley of Switzerland, Basler Papiermühle - Schweizerisches Museum für Papier, Schrift und Druck is a must-visit tourist attraction. Housed in a medieval mill on a canal, this fully-operational museum offers hands-on workshops where visitors can make their own paper and take it home as a souvenir.
This is an extraordinary museum and a 'must' visit. Based in the old paper mill it charts the history of paper from making to printing to book binding etc. the staff were great helping to get hands on experience of many of the processes. One of the best visits we have done in a long time.

As a paper and book artist, I had to go visit this museum and I ended up learning new things and also really enjoyed the exhibits and activities. They have different paper related activities on each floor which are suitable for people of all ages. They go in depth about the history of paper and how paper is used around the world. The ticket is for the day and there are many things to do at the museum that you could easily spend half a day there.

The Basel Paper Museum (Basler Papiermühle) offers a fascinating cultural experience, bringing the history of papermaking and printing to life. It's an excellent place for those interested in traditional craftsmanship, as you can make your own paper, explore historical printing machines, and even see vintage Macintosh computers. Interactive and informative, it's recommended for all ages!

Lovely ancient building filled to the brim with interesting historical, mechanical and cultural exhibits. I spent 90 minutes here, and if you take part in the hands-on activities or with kids, you can easily spend 2 hours or more here :)

WOW. One and only experience. Great hands on experience, from paper making that you take with to embossing. Almost felt guilty for a $10 entry! Beautiful building with full exposure over several floors to the historical equipment. Gift store had beautiful merch.

My children loooooved it! The experience is hands on from the beginning and that got us all. The collection of books and bibles that they have are amazing. The history of making paper, the interactive experiences while going up in the levels is great and at the top is the cherry on top. Definitely will come back with our boys (they asked to come back the next day)

There is so much to do here. There is a lot to learn and you get to make paper, choose wax stamps, do calligraphy, marbled paper. This was the highlight of our trip to Basel. Family with 4 kids. The Basel cards get you a discount here.

It was a great experience at Basler Papiermühle! The combination of history and the practical (do it yourself) experience is unique and outstanding. Create your own paper while being surounded by old (news-) paper machines and listening to historical facts. You will also see the first 🍏 Mac which was imported to Switzerland in 1984. It‘s definitely worth a visit in Basel!

The University of Basel Botanical Garden, established in the 16th century, is a serene oasis nestled in the heart of Basel. This historic garden showcases a diverse array of plant specimens and features picturesque grounds along with four greenhouses. Visitors can explore an impressive collection of cacti and orchids, as well as immerse themselves in the lush tropical environment within the tropical house.
A little beautiful garden with a lot to see. Small trails in-between the plants and flowers and a good place to get some shade (or warmth in the tropical houses).
Troels M — Google review
The Botanical garden of the University of Basel is the oldest garden in Switzerland. It is also one of the oldest gardens in the world. It was founded in 1589 by Caspar Bauhin for his research. Today, there are approximately 7500 plant species in the garden. It is located on Spalengraben and Schonbein Strasse. There are two fossilised tree trunks imported from the USA. These trees lived 210 million years ago in the desert area of Arizona, USA. Though the garden space is small compared to others, the space has been very well utilised. There are many green houses worth exploring. However, these green houses close an hour earlier than the visiting hours. The garden is almost part of the university. For example, the environmental sciences department has a doorway to this garden. I really wondered how could they grow trees in wooden boxes. The trees are short but bear big fruits like lemon, apple and pomegranate. The visit was enjoyable and informative. All the students must visit and learn how great nature is.
Sakthidaran R — Google review
Founded in 1589, the Botanical Garden of the University of Basel is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. Although it covers a small area, the collection is very rich, with more than 7,500 recorded plants. These include precious and rare species such as Titan Arum, Amazonian Water Lily, Millennium Grass, Giant Sequoia, Ginkgo Biloba, etc. In addition, the botanical garden also has different landscapes such as tropical rainforest, aquatic ecology, and cloud forest. If you want to visit, it is recommended to go around 10:00 in the morning and reserve two hours of sightseeing time, or wait until the afternoon when the sun is not so strong. If you don't understand German, try to bring a translation software to recognize some plant signs. This is a very good place to spend the weekend.

The Basel Historical Museum - Barfuesserkirche is a part of the larger museum complex in Basel, Switzerland. It houses a diverse range of exhibits including paintings, cathedral treasures, furniture, and archaeology. The collection of antiquities has a rich history dating back to early Basel and is now housed in the Antikenmuseum at St. Alban-Graben 5/7.
There are many museums in the beautiful city of Basel, but the Basel Historical Museum is worth a visit, whether in terms of the architectural form, its collections, or the history of Basel it records. It is in the center of Basel, so no matter which direction you start from, there is a very convenient transportation to bring you here. It is not large in scale, but it has a large collection of collections, and it carries a lot of information about the city's past from the source of Basel's history to today. It is a good place to kill time. If you have a Basel Tourist Card, you can also enjoy half price, about 7.5 Swiss francs.

A Hidden Gem Among City History Museums While I confess to having a soft spot for city history museums, the Basel Historical Museum proved to be an unexpected delight. Even better, admission is offered at half price with the BaselCard — an excellent incentive to explore this cultural treasure. Housed within a former church, the museum’s main floor offers a serene and evocative backdrop for its impressive collection of religious art. Particularly captivating are the three meticulously crafted city models of Basel, spanning from ancient times to the present — a real treat for urban history enthusiasts. Though all informational panels are in German, visitors are thoughtfully guided at the ticket counter to access detailed descriptions in English and French via a QR code, with free Wi-Fi available throughout the museum — a welcome gesture for international guests. The true highlight, however, lies in the basement: an extraordinary trove of historical wonders. From ornate jewelry and period furniture to curious artifacts, weapons, and full-scale reconstructions of Gothic interiors, the collection is both diverse and beautifully presented. It is well worth allowing ample time to explore this captivating subterranean gallery in its entirety.

Lots of great artifacts on exhibit with free Wi-Fi and free lockers to store your things while you look around. The app was very helpful for English speakers. The basement was my favorite, nice and cool when it’s hot out. only drawback was the videos and audio exhibits were only in German.

Naturhistorisches Museum Basel, also known as the Museum of Natural History, is one of the five state-run museums in Basel. It offers a wide range of natural history exhibits, including zoology and paleontology. The museum is well-maintained and features an extensive collection of curiosities and showpiece specimens that make it a fascinating place to explore for a few hours. Visitors can immerse themselves in exhibitions covering various natural sciences, from rocks and minerals to extinct flora and fauna.
Without a doubt, the best natural history museum I've ever been to. I was not expecting much and frankly we were trying to kill some time during a wet day. As it happens, we were both amazed and impressed. Staff were friendly. The people who designed the exhibits deserve an award. Great for taking photos and beautifully laid out. All the glass surfaces were flawlessly clean in the Swiss style! No coffee shop, just a vending machine - but nice clean washrooms. Quiet when we went.

The Basel Natural History Museum has extinct species such as mammoths, dodos, quaggas, saber-toothed cats, etc. When you enter, the museum staff will give you a guide map and ask if you need an audio guide. Just follow the audio guide and listen to the guide while walking. P15 is Peter Merian, one of the founders of the History Museum. There is a tram station named after him near the Law School of the University of Basel. The museum ticket is 7 Swiss francs, but the city government has a handbook with dozens of coupons for new residents. If you have a coupon, you don't have to pay. A two-hour tour will be enough.

Not one of the most beautiful natural history museums I've visited, but it's worth visiting, of course. Unfortunately, there are no explanations in English.

All signs are in German so the audioguide is essential if your a non German speaker. Good museum overall but not massive. Ensure you get a map as there are a few tucked away sections which you don't want to miss.

The Museum of Cultures Basel, located in Switzerland, is an ethnographic museum with a diverse collection of global artifacts. Established in the 1840s, it houses significant collections from Europe, the South Pacific, Mesoamerica, Tibet and Bali. The museum's origins can be traced back to the city of Basel's Museum of Natural History and Ethnography. Over time, it has expanded its holdings through sponsorships and continuous acquisitions.
This is an unusual and excellent museum in the centre of Basel, near the cathedral. Each floor has a different exhibition with an interesting theme. The English language leaflets which explain the exhibits are essential reading to get the most from the exhibitions. I visited several times over the course of one week and it took me several hours to look and read my way around each floor. Each exhibition is thoughtful, creative and illuminating. Who would have thought I’d fine a collection of anchors so fascinating? Excellent place, and the attached bistro is great too!
Victoria P — Google review
Visited the museum for the Día de los Muertos celebration, organized by the Asociacion de Mexicanos y amigos de Mexico en Basel (AMEX). The celebration was spectacular, with colorful decorations, beautiful altars, tours and informative cards highlighting different parts of the exhibition, and a good selection of traditional and affordable food. Unfortunately, I cannot give a five-start review due to poor organization and the rudeness of some museum staff. The main performances were planned in the museum´s courtyard despite the weather forecast predicting rain throughout the entire weekend. With the adverse weather conditions, the activities could have been relocated indoors so that the public could have enjoyed the presentations. During the Procession of the Catrinas, heavy rain led to disorganization, as attendees gathered both inside the museum shop and courtyard. The ones inside the museum shop were looking for shelter due to the heavy rain. Three museum employees, including two female staff members and one male staff member, attempted to manage the crowd. The female staff members were notably rude and impolite when pushing the visitors out of the museum shop and trying to make space in the courtyard. As a result, viewing the presentation was difficult due to its location at the lowest part of the courtyard and the ongoing rain. For future events, hope the organizers take the weather forecast into consideration when planning activities. It is crucial that museum staff are educated on the importance of making visitors feel welcomed and understand how their behavior impacts visitor´s perception of the museum service.

Whilst there are some very cool items (in particular the façade of the ceremonial house of Papua New Guinea- the only object with English captions I saw in the whole museum)- I’m glad my friend and I went in for free in the last hour. There are NO English captions/explanations throughout and if I can read German correctly very few objects were before the 19th century. Besides the very cool ceremonial house, the building exterior is the best thing. I didn’t see how the arrangement on each floor made sense… but then again not a German speaker!

First of all its location is great, very close to Basel Station. The tram station is just outside. It's a huge hall under the biggest dome in Europe built in 1929. There are food stalls from almost all over the world. Beside there is a wine cellar and a big bar. On certain days in the morning they also sell fresh fruits and vegetables. Its a free seating. After you order your food, they give you a beeper. Meanwhile you can select your seating place. One can also sit on outdoor patio. After going through all stalls, we had our lunch at Goi's Thai Kitchen. The food and service was very good. However our favorite was Schokolade, a great place for deserts. We had Tiramisu and Chocolate cake, very yummy. Different stalls have different timings for opening and closing. Worth visiting...

This small zoo is located in the city of Basel. It is a really beautiful place. I went here on a winter weekend morning. The city bus can go directly to the entrance of the zoo, so the transportation is very convenient. It was still early when I went, so there were not many people. The little animals were leisurely here, and the surrounding environment was also beautiful. In winter, the leaves in the park turned yellow, making everything covered with Christmas colors. There is a small river next to the park, and the gurgling water is very beautiful in the cold and lonely environment of winter.

St. Alban City Gate, also known as St. AlbanTor, is a well-preserved part of the city wall in St. Alban near the Basel Paper Museum. It serves as the gateway to the historic St. Alban quarter, characterized by narrow streets and ancient buildings that transport visitors back to the Middle Ages. The gate was first mentioned in history in 1230 and partially destroyed in an earthquake but rebuilt from 1362 onwards.
A historic tower on the Rhine River, next to a beautiful park. There are also ruins of a paper mill nearby.

7/10 Beautiful historical place, but unfortunately there isn’t much space around to sit or spend time there.

One of the nice and historical place in beautiful city of Basel. This is one of the three old gate for the entrance of the city. You can walk through the door. There is no entry fees, it's free. There is also a park nearby where you can sit and enjoy the beautiful view. Nice place to visit.

Nice looking tower at the edge of old town and small park. There are nice paths going down to the close by stream.

Located at the entrance of a park, this place is perfect if you want to lay back and relax. The St. Alban city gate is also the perfect introduction to your historical tour of old town St. Alban.
Angelica S — Google review
This is an historic site for Basel, one of the three gates that used to be part of the city wall. The gate has been preserved very nicely, and you can just walk right through it. It's free. There are also park benches nearby, and a papermill down the street (make sure to visit that too).
Sky ( — Google review
The old gateway to the city still has its large wooden door and the heavy paling that was let down in times of danger to bar the entrance to the city. The St. Alban-Tor, known locally as the “Dalbedoor”, is now the gateway to the St. Alban quarter of the city, which, with its narrow, winding streets and historical buildings, is like stepping back in history to the Middle Ages.

Antikenmuseum Basel und Sammlung Ludwig is a charming townhouse that hosts an impressive collection of decorative art from Ancient Greece, Egypt, Rome, and Etruria. The museum also delves into the captivating history of pharmacology with one of the world's largest collections of pharmaceutical artifacts.
It is an extraordinary museum and well worth a visit, particularly the Egyptian exhibit. The audioguide explains many items and is really helpful; unluckily we had problems hearing it  when we were in the Egyptian section as it is underground (both Wi-Fi and the phone connection didn't work): we had to come up the ramp and upload it there. There are some rare and exceptional items, so well preserved. Do not miss the dedication on a hand mirror gifted from a father to his daughter, that was so astonishing. A good bargain is the booklet "101 Masterpieces" which you can get for 5 fr. ; it's a piece of the museum that you can take home.
Monica P — Google review
Not very big, quite interesting, especially the section dedicated to ancient Egypt. Other sections are dedicated to ancient Rome and ancient Greece. You need about 90 minutes to visit it, at least an hour.

Great museum in a historic building. Great use of the space. The woman at the ticket counter was very helpful and spoke English very well. She made sure we had any information we needed and understood that the top floors close earlier than the lower floors, so recommended we start there. Great advice!
Sarah C — Google review
A great museum and selection of different eras and the Egyptian one is super. The balance between What’s on display. The staff are nice. They also have a nice patio and gift shop. Definitely it’s a must visit when in Basel.
Andrew K — Google review
The Antikenmuseum Basel und Sammlung Ludwig is a real gem for anyone fascinated by the ancient world. It is one of the very few museums in Switzerland devoted entirely to classical antiquity, and the quality of its collection is outstanding. From ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia to Greece, Etruria, and Rome, the museum offers a sweeping journey through thousands of years of human history and artistic achievement. What impressed me most is how beautifully the museum is curated. The galleries are not overwhelming in size, but each object is displayed with care and clarity, allowing visitors to take their time and truly appreciate the craftsmanship. Highlights include finely preserved Greek vases, delicate Etruscan jewelry, and Roman sculptures that still carry an astonishing sense of realism. The Egyptian collection is also captivating, with statues, sarcophagi, and small artifacts that provide a glimpse into daily life as well as ritual practices. The Sammlung Ludwig section complements the museum perfectly, adding remarkable pieces of classical art that were collected with a keen eye for quality. Together, the two collections feel both scholarly and accessible. Even if you don’t have a deep background in archaeology, the museum does an excellent job with explanations in multiple languages, making the stories behind the artifacts engaging and understandable. The setting itself is serene, with quiet galleries that allow for reflection. It feels more intimate than larger institutions like the British Museum, which means you can enjoy the treasures without crowds pressing around you. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and there is a pleasant café where you can pause and reflect on what you’ve seen.
Hannah — Google review
The Antikenmuseum Basel und Sammlung Ludwig is a place of great significance for archaeology and history. Here, you can truly feel the depth of ancient history and appreciate the importance of archaeology. The entrance fee was very reasonable, making it an accessible experience for visitors. Additionally, there is a bistro conveniently connected to the museum, offering a pleasant spot to relax. Visiting this museum in Basel, Switzerland, was an unforgettable experience.

The Three Countries Bridge, also known as Dreilanderbrucke, is a picturesque route along the Rhine river in Basel, Switzerland. It connects three countries - Switzerland, France, and Germany - with stops at key points of interest such as the Dreilandereck where the three countries meet. This pedestrian-only bridge spans over 229 meters and offers stunning views of the Rhine River. The surrounding areas provide ample opportunities for cultural exploration and shopping.
Amazing views for the new year. The bridge of three countries. Walk from Switzerland into Germany, then cross the bridge into France. You can have breakfast lunch and dinner in three different countries.
Paul C — Google review
Please don't think that you can get to the bridge directly from Three Countries point. You can't. From Switzerland you have to either walk or get the tram to Germany and then walk to the bridge. I walked and it took me about 20 mins. With the help of Google Maps I had no issues at all. I was alone and felt safe at all times. Even as I walked through the docks.
Gill L — Google review
The Three Countries Bridge is an incredibly unique and fun spot that left a strong impression on me! With just one step, you can stand at the meeting point of three countries: Germany, France, and Switzerland — a rare and exciting experience. The bridge has a sleek, modern design with a gentle curve over the Rhine River, making it perfect for a scenic walk, great photos, and a moment to feel the cultural connection between nations. The air is fresh, the river views are lovely — especially at sunset. A must-visit landmark that beautifully unites three countries in one stunning view!
Xuan T — Google review
I walked across the Three Countries Bridge in Basel, and it was cool thinking I was stepping over three borders at once—Switzerland, Germany, and France. The bridge itself is simple, modern, not too fancy, but the idea makes it special. The view of the Rhine is nice, and it’s a good spot to take a photo just for the bragging rights. There were some cyclists and a few tourists, but it wasn’t crowded. If you’re in Basel and want a quick, easy trip to two more countries in like five minutes, this is the place. Fun little detour!
Illia L — Google review
Definitely worth visiting if you are in a neighboring city. It's credible to see that you are in 3 countries at once. I visited from Basel Switzerland and you had to show ID (passport for foreigners) on the last stop of the tram was in Germany.

Fantastic bridge as walkway between 3 countries Germany, France and Switzerland. I love this place. Amazing view on Rhine River. The Germany side is very exciting. Lots of good shopping options in Rhein Centre, such as Edeka, H&M, New Yorker, and DM, and many more other options. For Swiss and France people, this is a good place for economical shopping and food.

Historisches Museum Basel - Haus zum Kirschgarten, located in the heart of Basel, is a historical treasure trove housed in the 14th-century Barfusserkirche. The museum offers a diverse range of exhibits, including archaeological findings from local monasteries and Roman Switzerland fortifications. Visitors can also explore the lifestyles of Basel's merchant class through furnishings from demolished houses, an extensive collection of clocks and watches spanning 500 years, and dollhouses.
What a find. A treasure of national and Basel specific artefacts that could easily have been lost to history. Well presented. Display write ups are generally written in German, but they have a very good online tool, easy to use, and uses free in-house Wifi. Minimum time 2 hours. We took 4 but could have gone longer (if only they had refreshments available 🤷🏻).
Richard P — Google review
The Haus zum Kirschgarten is a hidden treasure in Basel that takes you straight into the refined world of the 18th century. Spending 2 to 3 hours here is the perfect way to explore the beautifully preserved rooms and learn how the city’s elite once lived. The collection of clocks is absolutely breathtaking. Every space feels authentic, filled with elegant furniture, silver, porcelain, and fascinating details. The collection of historic scientific instruments is truly impressive. The staff are friendly and happy to answer any questions. There’s short info in English throughout the museum, which really helps with understanding. A peaceful, educational, and inspiring experience for history lovers and curious travellers alike. Absolutely worth a visit if you are in the area, highly recommend.
Przemyslaw K — Google review
A large house museum with many exhibits. The first halls with the clocks are extremely beautiful. We were also very impressed with the toys on the top floor. The house itself is majestic and huge. A must visit.
NadiaK. — Google review
Not a huge museum person but this place is great. See what a home, furniture, styles, clocks, toys, were like 100’s of years ago. So interesting! Some beautiful things. We went fast and took 1.5 hrs. Could spend much more time there. Used the QR code for English translation and it worked great. Staff very helpful and friendly. Museum is four floors (so a number of stairs to go up and down) and it is warm inside. Need to leave bags, back packs in locker (free of charge). Do have nice toilet if needed on main level.
Vicki M — Google review
For me it was the most interesting museum in Basel. They have an impressive collection of old clocks and other instruments for measuring time, astrolabes, compasses, globes. A series of rooms are set up as they were when the mansion housing the museum was built, to help you get an idea of how people lived in those times. You can also see old furniture, old kitchenware, porcelain, toys. You need at least two hours to visit it. The museum also has a small garden, with a gazebo, very nice! One minus: the lack of descriptions in English.
Paul C — Google review
This beautiful and historic house is full of fascinating rooms and treasures. There is far more to see than you might expect from outside. The collections of clocks and watches and of toys are especially good. Don't miss the garden, too. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Simon R — Google review
The Haus zum Kirschgarten was built around 1780 by the Burckhardt family. The house was the best there was at the time. Today part of the Hustorisches Museum Basel is housed in the building. Half of the Dad Museum consists of one part in which a lot of exhibition items such as clocks, pictures and furniture can be seen. The other half is the residential building with different rooms in various styles
Simon G — Google review
A nice exhibition about the everyday life of a wealthy family in the 18th and 19th century. One can pick up a lot of information about the structure of the Swiss society that time. A large collection of watches, toys and China is included as well. Some titles and descriptions are only in German.

Nice building, Interesting exhibit of Carrie Mae Weems, very poor lighting! The photos were in a frame, so the photos couldn’t be enjoyed due to the reflexion from the lights on the ceiling. It is amazing how such important detail isn’t cared for. 🤔

Some of the african artists can totally compete with international competition. Puttin them in a n africa only setting is devaluating their greatness. This off course can be debated. But it feels like minority promotion. The building and the presentation was professional. The wall colors were exceptional. And we were discussing a lot.
Danhosan — Google review
Good collections, but the most interesting part is the building. A former paper mill built across a small stream. Great views from the terrace on top. Very friendly staff.

the museum belongs to the third building of the FINE ARTS MUSEUM BASEL (KUNSTMUSEUM) it is located less than 10 minutes from the main building, next to the river, it is clearly a different exhibition than in the main building, at the time I was there it was an exhibition of contemporary female artists, i.e. mainly Andrea Büttner - The heart of relationships. It is a small museum. I'm missing a better sign, where the stairs are, where to get to the next floor, where maybe the beginning and the end are

It's only temporary exhibitions, so of course some will resonate more than others. The biggest issue is the tiny size - comics are huddled together, so it's hard to read anything because there are always other guests in the way. You're likely to be finished in 15-30 minutes.

I went for my first time a month ago to the theatre to see The Phantom of the Opera. I was bewitched the entire performance. I was sitting on the balcony in the middle of the rows of seats. I had a perfect view of the scene, the quality of the music performed by the musicians as well as the voices and singing of the actors was clear and everything sounded beautifully. The seat was comfortable. The entire place looks prestigious, clean and welcoming. I can only recommend
Colwin E — Google review
A nice indoor theater with a bad acoustic though, especially in the last rows. Difficult to find parking place close to the theater.
Lou S — Google review
Nice place. The venue is of a proper size, offering all amenities. Acoustics is average I'd say, but good enough. I don't understand the comments about parking issues -- there are two huge park houses, each 10 minute walk. And there's a tram connection. Now to the content: we watched Phantom of the Opera. It was really really good -- scenography the top standard... Acting, dancing and singing all very good. I'm really thankful.

This place is easily accessible by public transport. Tram 14 has a stop called Musical Theater about 100 meters away from the theatre. The theater has counters for food and drink as well as for depositing your long coats. Overall highly recommended for watching a play.

Dirty Dancing Show 18th of June 2024 Performance was amazing. The staff was really nice and helpful. Unfortunately we felt like we were trapped in a sauna. The Theatre was packed and it was super hot. There is no type of air conditioning so everyone was just forced to sit (super close together and on uncomfortable seats) through the show instead of enjoying the performance. For the price we payed I was really disappointed in the Theatre experience.

Ignace T — Google review
Amazing building...and wonderful is, we can enjoy this luxury in Switzerland. An extraordinary place for big art. All the more important is the curator who is allowed to play with this space. In the case of the bass piece, this was not entirely successful. Either the tuning was not good, or perhaps the loudspeakers, or the room was simply too big for the piece. But there was still a mystical atmosphere. The light supported ...but was it in tune with the piece? I will certainly come again...the room is unique...

I visited it here at the time of the "out of the box" exhibition, I have to admit that I have never seen the works laid out like this anywhere. the building is impressive, the various corners of the exhibition where the video formats were viewed were perfectly separated and isolated. I adore the openness of the theater hall. The last time I had a similar feeling was in Oslo. If you like the open air, you can sit next to the Tinguely Fountain. It's a complex with different stages and I watched 1984 in the Schauspielhaus. So you can check the stage name in advance but no need to worry as everything is close. The ballet will change artistic direction next season, so there will be more ballets than physical theaters/performances. Check the program and see if you can find something you like.
Hahparis — Google review
Very good theater, interesting space, good organisation… Except it was not clear that there are two separate buildings with entries 5min away one from another. We asked the personal to verify that we were at the right place, but due to some misunderstanding we almost lost the start of the performance although being in the theatre one hour in advance. It is noticeable that there are tensions among the artistic personal and the administration and it is currently undergoing a change of direction. Looking forward to come back and see some other excellent pieces!

It offers a comprehensive portrayal of Jewish life and culture in Switzerland from the medieval period to the present day. The museum's collection encompasses ritual objects, art, and daily items from Judaism, providing visitors with a unique perspective on the diverse history of the Swiss Jewish community.
An excellent museum that has an extraordinary array of artifacts, every day objects and documents. The displays provide and show the role over time and the presence of Jews in Basel. I enjoyed it very much as a non-Jewish person it provided an interesting journey through Jewish history and culture in Basel.

It is a bit small but, really worthy. With the same ticket you can get into the gallery. The woman at the counter, extremely professional( thank you very much for your help). Take the free audio guide, it gives you some explanations about Jew culture. Don't hesitate to visit it. Really recommendable.
M&M-29 — Google review
I did not enjoy the museum it wasn't comprehensive didn't go through the last 500 years of Jewish history was very small and was not worth the money. I didn't like the content of the exhibition and I especially didn't like the fact that there was no history about the Jews during world war II which I thought was an important component being that Switzerland was neutral. I was unimpressed that museum needs to be revamped or at least curated by Jews that are competent. I don't think the curator is Jewish and I think that the exhibition was totally lame talked about Jewish ritual and showed menorahs. That museum needs a lot of work and I would not advise I need you to go to it because it wasn't really pertinent to our history.
Karen B — Google review
The museum is small but special! The permanent exhibition provides interesting insights into Jewish life and holidays as well as the history of the Jews in Switzerland. The reception was extremely friendly, which is always nice, especially in a small museum. There is a video guide, which I highly recommend. A must see in Basel!
Catty S — Google review
Small museum (only two rooms). Gives more of a brief explanation of Judaism rather than the history of Jews in Switzerland. Would have loved to see more of that but what it did provide was excellent and well explained. Staff was so kind and welcoming!
Dani L — Google review
Cute museum. I ended up spending a lot of time in the library, where there are shelves full of beautiful books. You can also sit in the yard and enjoy a cup of coffee. The photography exhibit in the gallery on Petersgraben was particularly memorable.
Geoff D — Google review
First of all I have to mention one positive thing - it is a very cosy and nice museum, BUT here comes a long list of cons: 1. It is tiny(3 rooms) 2. Most of the items have close to none info about them except for 2-3 words description. 3. It is branded as "museum of Switzerland" but I didn't see how this can be a national museum describing the history of jews in only 3 rooms. Sorry.
D. L — Google review
The main museum is hidden, but the entrance is well marked. A courtyard with large pictures by a young Israeli painter and tombstones of the Basel Jewish cemetery from the Middle Ages leads into the premises. Many impressive objects from the region, including a ring from the 4th century with Jewish motifs. Exciting! We didn’t have time for the Galerie am Petersgraben, which was a pity.

St. Paul's Church in Basel is a stunning reformed church that was built at the turn of the 20th century. The facade wall features an intricate openwork rose, striking mosaics, and a tower adorned with ornate statues and clocks. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by the statue of the Archangel Michael engaged in battle with a dragon.
St. Paul's Church in Basel is truly impressive and beautiful. The architecture is stunning, and the surroundings add to its charm. A must-visit spot for architecture lovers and those looking for a peaceful place to admire.

A bit on the edge of town, but well connected by tram and bus and in easy reach by foot. If you're in the area or need a break after a trip to Schützenmattpark then it's definitely worth a visit, and especially if the sun is shining! The cafe is situated directly next to the beautiful St. Paul's church and allows you to enjoy a coffee or ice-cream whilst admiring the garden and the cherry-blossom trees. There is plenty of seating and umbrellas providing protection from the sun. The coffee, cakes, cookies and ice-creams are all handmade and include vegan offerings. The coffee is fine and the whole setup is lovely. Somewhere special to take a well earned break!

It’s gorgeous. Especially when the bells are ringing. On Sunday at 6pm it was open as there was a service there. It’s not a catholic or orthodox church as I thought from the name. Inside it’s not that beautiful as outside.

St. Johanns-Tor is a significant historical monument in Basel, Switzerland, and one of the three remaining entrance gates to the old medieval walled city. Built after the earthquake of 1356, it now houses Basel's police force and stands as a landmark in the St. Johann quarter. Surrounded by parks and near the famous Rhine River, this well-preserved gate offers visitors a glimpse into medieval architecture.

The Swiss Architecture Museum is located in a glass-roofed neo-baroque building and was founded in 1984. It hosts changing exhibitions on contemporary architecture, including the current Swim City exhibition which explores bathing culture in cities worldwide and future swimming possibilities. The museum's distinctive design reflects its purpose as the home of the Swiss National Museum of Architecture, where various exhibitions, workshops, events, and discussions about the history and future of architecture take place.
It's always a good surprise to visit this museum in the best place of Basel City Center , near Tinguely, Serra, Panton roof ...

Neither Swiss, barely about architecture, as much a museum as your local punks à chiens squat. Very mediocre exhibition about BXL urbanism (the kind I would expect from a class of first-year architecture students). Another weird exhibition about... internet things ? Really didn't caught my attention. Standard exhibition wasn't available. The price of the entrance is fr. 12.-

It was a good exhibition, but they do not cancel the wrongly paid admission fee. It's 6 francs, but I received 12 francs, and they don't cancel because there is no card cancellation system. They told us to call the card company, but since we're just customers, the seller asked us to write a note saying we want to cancel, so we refused, saying we didn't hope. It seems that they are not willing to pay the right price. In common sense, there is no card system that cannot cancel card payments. When I searched for the cancellation of the credit card company I was using, it was said that it could be done within 4 days. I realized and requested it in just two hours, and I think it makes no sense that it is systematically impossible. If it seems that they did not have the heart to do it, and if it is just because they do not know about the card payment system, I think that as a seller, you should be well aware of the card payment system. It is said that it would have been easily returned if it was done in cash, but I know that it is illegal to receive by covering a card and cash. Whether you pay by cash or by card, you are the same consumer. I know it's a place that exhibits modern architecture and progressive architecture, but if you don't know about the card payment system, it's outdated. We will also attach related materials to the museum's official e-mail.

Very disappointed. No architecture at all. Just random videos of city life which could be watched for free on internet. The art was a room with flashing lights and the second floor some mechanisms which have nothing to do with architecture. May be I don’t understand something but perhaps consider changing the name of the “architecture museum” to thematic exhibition.

I asked for my money back! After 24 days wonderful days in Switzerland my wife and I (both architects) walked out and asked for our money back. If architects wonder why their respect in society has eroded this is a perfect example why. Sorry but this was beyond bad

Recreation center
If you're looking for an exciting indoor activity, especially on a rainy day, Room Escape Basel (Voltaplatz) is the perfect destination for families and groups. This venue offers a variety of themed escape rooms that cater to different skill levels, ensuring everyone can join in on the fun. Each room presents unique puzzles that challenge your problem-solving skills and creativity—think hidden doors and intriguing riddles rather than just standard key hunts!
Room Escape Basel provides a fun, family friendly experience for those looking to test themselves with some immersive puzzle solving. There are a variety of rooms available, each with a different theme and difficulty level. The puzzles were interesting and challenging, forcing us to to think on our feet and occasionally walk through a trap door leading into the darkness or down a ladder into a creepy looking tomb! Joy, our game master explained the backstory well and was very helpful in giving us clues if we were stuck for too long. We also appreciated the extra few minutes at the end, since we were unable to complete the room on time. Overall I would definitely recommend Room Escape Basel and hope to visit one of the other rooms soon!

Highly recommended! It was a present for my birthday and I really enjoyed it. I did the "Hildergards Geheimnis" room with my boyfriend. I was not sure about the difficulty as English is not our mother tongue, but everything was super clear and we had a really good time. All the staff was very friendly and helpful. We will come back for sure to try another Escape Room :)

I recently went there for a business event! Awesome rooms, lots of fun, the bar nearby, restaurants around. I highly recommend it!
Jonathan H — Google review
We did the Yama-Curse and were all amazed by the room. Great decorations and atmosphere, with interesting and diverse riddles (more than the standard find-the-next-key hunts). The game master Chris asked us before about how much tips we wanted and stuck to our preference of only providing tips if we asked for it. He also let us go 3 min overtime because we were close to finishing to give us the success of beating the curse! One technical riddle (world map) was a bit finicky (we had the feeling some electric contacts did not work sometimes), but overall great Escape Room. Can definitely recommend, and we look forward of trying out the more difficult room soon!

Water Tower Bruderholz in Basel is a hidden gem offering a delightful walk and stunning vistas of the city and countryside. The ascent to the tower is pleasant, culminating in breathtaking panoramic views of Basel from a unique perspective. Visitors appreciate the well-maintained surroundings and find it reminiscent of childhood memories, especially during spring. The area's beauty, combined with the best panoramic view of Basel and its environs, makes it an underrated attraction.
Amazing views over Basel! Cost of entry is 1 CHF. Note that only exactly 1 CHF coins are accepted by the machine so make sure to bring the correct coins. Many stairs to the top but definitely worth it as the views are amazing and give you the full view of Basel. It's great that a piece of history like this is open to the public!

From Bruderholz you're able to see the fireworks they launch in Basel on the Swiss national day 🎆 You should be good with a 70-200mm telephoto lens and don't forget your tripod. There are some people but not to many, so parking wasn't a problem at all :)

A nice place for a walk and the hill is excellent for children when there is snow. They make a boarded wall along the curb of the road and line it with straw bales to prevent children from reaching the road or having serious injuries. My only criticism is that the public toilets are often unclean and covered in spray paint tags etc.
Craig T — Google review
How this place is not more publicised on tourist websites is beyond me. Simply put, this is the best panoramic view of Basel and the surrounding areas you will find. It costs 1 Swiss Franc on a self serve machine at the bottom and worth the climb (a lot of steps but seats at the top to relax). Each view is signposted to help illustrate what you are looking at.
Daryl P — Google review
It's all about the experience of being all the way up. How high does not matter... The birds eye perspective of Basel and the surrounding areas is really worth it, all around the year. Quite a lot of stairs, but worth every cent. Current entry fee is Swiss Fr.1 which you pay at an automat.

Lovely spot for swimming in the Rhein and chilling in summer. The lido consists of two floors. Top floor has umbrellas, tables and deck chairs as well as a kiosk with good coffee. However, during busy times, it’ll be hard to find a place in the shade upstairs. Outdoor movie theater
The Allianz Cinema Basel is a popular outdoor movie theater in Basel, Switzerland. It features a wide range of films, including new releases and classics, and is open year-round.
It was such a disappointment when the weather forecast was set to rain, but it led to an even bigger experience! So, I'd recommend it regardless the weather, just be prepared. The place is designed like a food court, you have good options and healthy ones as well! We were positively surprised not to see any junk/fast food. The WC was beyond my expectations; I mean it's outdoors, so I was keeping my hopes down expecting to see plastic cabins, but no. Again, as if you are in an indoor food court, you get regular WC. Kudos to the organisers ^^ Don't forget to get your reservation banner in entrence if you need one. They supply a pen if you don't have any, to write your name onto it. About the rain, we were handed rain ponchos when entering the theatre. When it rains constantly, in open air, of course you feel cold after a while. So, depending on the person to go or not to go on a rainy day may become a health-wise choice ^^°

The atmosphere was very beautiful and with good options for food as well as the movie. However, my disappointment was some people smoked during the movie, I tried to see if a staff could help but there were not. There should be a sign to avoid these situations, I see people from other years complaining about the same so I hope next year they can change it 🚭🚭🚭

Lovely experience- we’ve been for dinner and drinks as well as afternoon tea. Booked cruise in advance online for 11 CHF + 13 CHF (each direction respectively) and was emailed tickets with QR codes. Day of cruise (thurs aug 31, 2023), boarded cruise no problem, tried to get off boat and they checked tickets and said that tickets are for some reason invalid, and were harassing and would not let leave the boat until paying AGAIN. So had to pay 24 CHF again (receipt says Selena Manz). In total paid 48 CHF for the cruise which is double the cost it should be, and it was not even enjoyable, and had to deal with inappropriate behaviour from staff. I had a very bar experience on this location with the turkish man. Very bad behavior, he threated dor fight.... This is a location with just 5 machines, if you play 1euro bet...the machines don t pay you nothing ,just 3euro or 13 euro. Every 14 scatter(freispielen) on 1 euro bet, the machines payed everytime just 3-13 euro. I did not likeed the behavior of that turkish guy who worked on 28May. He start to screem on me in Turkish language.. I just ask him very quiet, why the machines don t pay nothing on 1 euro or 2 euro every 14 freispilen what I had.

It was a nice casino. Although the announcements for the raffle were made in French and German, when I told them I only spoke English, they started announcing it in English as a third language. That small gesture made me really happy.

Invited to a friend's birthday. No gambling but a great party. Good food and drinks. Live music who never took a break. Basel is a nice place.

Visited Casino Basel for the PokerStars tournament in August and had a terrible experience as the organization did not have enough seats to support the number of enrolled players. In a nutshell, a wasted day and loss of the travel and lodging fees. First and last experience at this venue.
Carlos R — Google review
Great casino , smaller than the ones i have been. Very clean, very well managed.
Aushdeep G — Google review
I liked it. Very close to the airport. The hotel gives you Basel card what you can use for transportation and some Museums discount. They have airport transportation and parking too. Behind the building there is the casino. You need a dress code to get in and ID. They also have slots upstairs and in the basement. They have slots, cards, roulette. Smoking are was in the basement. They offer show and also you can eat. They not open 24 hours. As I remember they open qt 10 and close at 3am. They also offer breakfast on Sunday and coffee or cappuccino for free. I don't know since COVID-19 what has been changed....
Gyongy J — Google review
Nice location, clean facilities and one floor of table games. Not so smokey as some other casinos.

Overground Basel is a vast 2500-m hall that serves as a playground for athletes of all ages. It offers various trendy sports such as parkour, chase tag, trampoline, and calisthenics. The facility features world-class obstacles and caters to all athletic abilities. Visitors can learn ninja and parkour skills from friendly and knowledgeable staff members. Overground Basel also hosts fun activities like birthday parties, school trips, and kids camps during school breaks.
Overground is such an amazing facility! Always spacious, clean, and has the best world-class obstacles! They cater extremely well to all athletic abilities. It is the perfect place to start learning how to do ninja and parkour obstacles from their incredibly friendly, and knowledgeable staff. Would 100% recommend if you’re interested in taking your ninja & parkour skills to the next level. It is the perfect place to bring friends to try obstacles from the ninja warrior show!! 10/10

Tips for first-time visitors: 1. Skip the GPS panic. The entrance is tucked beneath the bridge. Look for stairs or ramps going under, not on top. 2. Parking tip: Free street parking is tough nearby. Try the "Parkhaus Claramatte" and walk 5–10 min. 3. Bring water. It gets sweaty fast, especially in summer. There's no free water fountain, just vending machines. 4. Wear layers. It can go from chilly to sauna depending on the floor you’re on and how packed it is. 5. Best for older kids & teens. Most gear is sized for 10+; younger kids need extra supervision. 6. Don’t miss the top floor. The upper level has a great view, more chill seating, and sometimes pop-up activities. 7. Book in advance. Especially on weekends or school holidays it fills up quickly and walk-ins may be turned away. 8. Friendly staff. The crew is super supportive if you're new to parkour, skating, or trampolines. Just ask! 9. Bring grippy socks or sneakers. Some areas require grip—flip-flops and sandals are useless here. 10. Budget for snacks. There's a small café/snack bar, but it's cashless; card or phone payments only.

This facility is INCREDIBLE!!! Both the parkour and ninja spaces are so large and equiped with variety, making it perfect for any level. No matter if you’re a beginner or a pro, you’ll have endless challenges and obstacles to conquer 🙌🏼 I loved it!

We came only for the weekend from Hungary to try the training center out. The buliding is just a few bus stops away from the airport, so getting there was very convenient and quick. The gym is very well equipped and there are thick mattresses under every obstacle, so I was finally able to practice my jumps with confidence. The staff is very nice and helpful, I hope I will have the opportunity to visit many more times :)
Adrienn N — Google review
Fantastic place for kids to learn and stay fit. Great staff, friendly and enough space for parents to wait. I highly recommend this place. Bring your kids here as they get stronger and feel happier.
Sid — Google review
It is a pretty awesome place with two big halls. The only thing I disliked is their lockers which don't have a lock, you could bring your own but during your first time you don't know that and thereby risk your stuff getting stolen. (Edit: they do have locks which you can lent so that is nice and also makes 5 out of 4 stars)
Anton S — Google review
A wonderful place to have fun with tag game, ninja warrior and Parkour stuff. The staff is very nice, correct fee and a small drink and snack place. A must to visite in Basel 🤘

An unbelievable ninja , Chase tag and parkour facility. It’s huge! They offer great classes that all 3 of my kids attend after school and they also do fun birthday parties, school trips and kids camps during every school break.

Public swimming pool
Swimming pool
Gartenbad & Sportbad St. Jakob is a top-notch swimming facility that offers excellent amenities for visitors of all ages. The pools are well-maintained and the guests are polite. It boasts various types of pools, including ones specifically designed for kids, with features such as slides and water games. The area also includes a large sandbox and plenty of space for picnics on the grass. The entry fee is reasonable, accepting both credit cards and Euro notes.
The place is very huge and spacious. The entrance fees are on the website. There are 4 different pools, if I remember correctly. So you don’t get bored and can do many things. There are stalls where you can buy food, price wise, it isn’t that cheap though. A lot of people bring their own food and maybe buy something warm on the spot, if they want to eat more. There are a couple of slides, which are fun to slide down. Spring board and diving boards of different heights. Also, changing rooms for both genders with bathrooms and showers. For the lockers you have to bring your own lock. All in all, it is a great place to go for a swim with family and friends.
Rani N — Google review
A really nice place, but I suggest you bring a few 1 CHF or your own lock before you go!! The price is quite reasonable, but it’s busy on weekends! It’s a good idea to bring some food and snacks as well! And I wish the staff would provide locks for free!!😄
Marla N — Google review
The facility offers several pools and entertainment areas for children. There are plenty of green spaces where you can enjoy time in the shade of trees. A few kiosks serve takeaway sandwiches and basic food, but they do not serve alcohol. The facility provides several lockers; you can either bring your own lock or use theirs by inserting 1 CHF. The entry ticket is quite reasonable at only CHF 7.5, and the facility is open until 9 PM. It might be a bit crowded during summer weekends. The place is safe, and each pool has a lifeguard taking care of clients and children.

One of the best schwimbad I've been to, very clean, polite guests, many amenities and very nice areas for kids with small pool, slides, big sand box and water games. Even Really recomended.

Should be update Google as shows OPEN till 20:00 but close at 18:00 till…. Seems!!! The 7 May….

Recommend planning a full day of fun if not a subscribing member. Best features include large size pools, fun areas for all ages, reserved lap lanes, extensive deck and grass lounge areas, play spaces for kids, with sand pit and beach volleyball. Worth checking rules about own food or drink (how much is allowed?) as sometimes one of three cafeteria or restaurants may be closed. Bring a good lock to avoid locker expenses.

(Translated by Google) Rage Room: a great time, a great outlet for those who need to let off steam. I went with my son, and we came out exhausted!! I recommend it. At first, 20 minutes seemed short, but in the end, I couldn't have lasted any longer because we put all our energy into it! We hope the car can be replaced soon; when that happens, we'll definitely go back. Thank you also for the welcome, the clear explanations, and the kindness. A very nice experience that we highly recommend.

(Translated by Google) The experience is fun and really satisfying! However, it might be time to put in a new car that can really break down because there isn't much left that moves... And also more choices such as several large parts would have been appreciated... Thanks to Tiffany for the welcome!

(Translated by Google) Very friendly welcome, I won't hide from you that I expected something else!! However, the friends I accompanied were able to let off steam, that was the most important thing for me ☺️ the wetsuits were clean, the gloves were new and the masks were good too. The only negative point for me is that there isn't enough equipment to throw or break.
Carla B — Google review
(Translated by Google) I put one star because you can't give any. It would be a question of reviewing your language and stopping exploiting the people you "hire" knowing that it is under the table and not paying them completely. Equipment breaks everything, combination which could kill them, they are never washed, just like gloves and masks.

(Translated by Google) We recently tried the rage room and were very disappointed with the experience. For 50 CHF per person we thought we'd get an hour, but turns out it was only for 20 minutes. The equipment provided, such as baseball bats and sledgehammers, was in very poor condition, almost unusable. The car to be destroyed was already so damaged that there was no longer any satisfaction in breaking it. We had a few dishes to break, but nothing extraordinary for the price. Additionally, the suits were not very clean and the gloves had an unpleasant odor. In summary, a disappointing experience, we advise you to move on.

(Translated by Google) Great experience which is out of the ordinary and which, for once, lets off steam! While being safe. The time announced when booking seemed to me to be short, but ultimately more than enough, we gave everything to the last minute! Aches for 1 week for me who doesn't do sports xD I recommend, whether with family, friends or colleagues.
