Taketomi Island is a picturesque destination with tranquil beaches and a delightful village adorned with red-tiled roof buildings. Visitors can enjoy snorkeling among vibrant tropical fish or embark on a hike to Mount Omoto for breathtaking views. The area also offers opportunities to explore Okinawan culture and traditions, from ancient human remains at the Yaeyama Museum to learning Okinawan dance moves at Yaema Village.
Very peaceful Island.about 15 minutes away from Ishigaki Island. The Island have several nice beaches.several small cafe and restaurant have there. Visitors can rent bicycles.you can spend a few hours to see everything.Good place to relax.
Weeraratna C — Google review
The island offers a wonderfully authentic look at remote life, with charming traditional homes that feel very real. It's a little worrying, though, that the entire residential area seems to be on display, raising questions about privacy. Still, a memorable visit.
T. G — Google review
The island is a paradise. Not big but is full worth a day or 2, you can visit the jungle , swim in the crystal clear waters, admire the big trees close to the shore , and see the life of the locals. Just remember to take sun screen even if it is not a shiny day.

We came to Taketomi Island in July 2025. The other ferries were cancelled due to high winds/waves, but the ferry to Taketomi is short (only 15 minutes), cheap, and frequent, so luckily it was not cancelled. The ride was bumpy, however. In addition to the price of the ferry (1520円 round trip), you should pay the conservation fee (300円) at the machine in the ferry terminal to help preserve the island. Like all of the Yaeyama islands, please note there are no bins for trash, so be prepared to carry it with you. Although we did not initially plan on going, Taketomi was a wonderful place to visit! You can walk or rent a bicycle. The roads are made of sand but they are not soft, so it is probably good for cycling, but we went around on foot. You can meander or follow one of the walking courses on the island’s website. We walked through town, enjoyed watching the water buffalo-drawn carts, had lunch, then went to Kondoi beach and Kaiji beach before catching the last ferry. Please note Kondoi Beach is the only beach on Taketomi where swimming is allowed, and it is very shallow. Even at high tide you are standing, so at low tide it is too shallow to swim. I recommend going as close to high tide as you can. There are good shower facilities. At Kaiji beach you can purchase star sand. All the beaches have tons of adorable hermit crabs, and clever crows who will notoriously steal anything including clothes. We also enjoyed seeing the ruddy kingfisher multiple times on Taketomi.

Taketomi island is a beautiful island that’s about 20 minutes away by a Ferry from Ishigaki Island Japan. The island have several nice beaches that are walking distance from the ferry terminal. Quaint town with traditional Okinawan style homes and architecture. There are several cafes and small restaurants in the islands serving traditional Japanese foods and desserts. A nice place to visit if you’re in Ishigaki Japan.
Manny A — Google review
It's a tranquil and peaceful island. You can relax on the beach, take a water buffalo ride, and explore the old town, among other enjoyable activities.

A must see place for anyone who wants to experience what “real Okinawa” felt like for hundreds of years. Traditional Okinawan style homes and architecture, beautiful beaches, delicious quaint little cafes. This residential little island is no Disney theme park. Aside from the ox driven carts and couple cafes catering to tourists, most of the island is made up of the homes of locals living their peaceful island life. A beautiful place to to spend a day.

Getting to Taketomi Island is easy from Ishigaki Island. It take about 20 minutes by ship from Ishigaki Port Departure Terminal. Upon arrival, a car comes down to the impressive village with red tiled wooden houses, coral stone walls, and white coral sandy white roads all over. The scenery is representative of Taketomi Island. Which has been identified as a conservation group of traditional ancient buildings. National key The island also has services Ride the cart, use the buffalo to drag. Around the village one more round or let the buffalo donkey go into the water Taketomi Island has a shallow sea surrounded by calm waves. And has views representing the islands Authentic Okinawa The state of the country that has been set in the past since the setting sun that has helped to dye the sea red. And the stars that shine in the silent night sky This island that gave birth "Asadoya Yunta" which is widely known among the Okinawan folk songs. Kaiji Beach, also known as "Hoshizuna Beach," is a picturesque tree-lined beach where visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls and search for tiny star-shaped shells along the shoreline. Located about 9 minutes on foot from Kondoi Beach on the south side, this beach is famous for its unique star sand.
This was a nice place to visit, but if you are expecting to find star sand- go pound sand because it is virtually impossible to find… plus you can’t take it with you if you do find it. There is a guy who sells a small vial of star sand for ¥500. The beach does have a cute swing for Insta pics. Overall, I would bike here again just to enjoy the views.
Indigo G — Google review
This beach was a lot more rocky than Kondoi beach down the road. There were some cool large hermit crabs walking around and lots of rocks that looked nice under the sun. I recommend wearing swim shoes or sandals because it was difficult to walk around barefoot.
Elias ( — Google review
Such a lovely beach! In addition to the star sand, this beach has the most shade I've seen in a month of my Okinawa travels. A few swings are hanging from trees so you can enjoy the views and relax. Swimming is not allowed here. Small shop had a table on the beach with a few items for sale (jewelry and bottles of star sand)
Aida Z — Google review
A place to dig for star sand, it's not as easy as it looks to get some! There is a small local stand that sells it too on the beach! Support local!! Low tide allows you to walk out far and can look at sea life. There are fun swings on the beach to take photos on! Free. Has a bathroom on site.
Yuuki A — Google review
Beautiful but you cant swim there
Ahmed A — Google review
Nice beach to visit - you are not allowed to swim there, and probably wouldn't want to as it is very rocky. However, there are nice sandy shaded areas where you can lie down and chill. Looking for the little stars is also quite enjoyable.
Magdalena A — Google review
Easy to get to. The sandbar is walkable at low tide.
Mim W — Google review
Small but nice place. Stay around 30 minutes here and difficult to find the "star" sands. Anyway, you can still buy a small bottle of sands from the shop nearby. =)

Nagominoto Tower, a 4.5-meter tall structure located at the heart of the village, offers panoramic views of the island from its strategic position atop a small hill. While climbing the tower is currently prohibited, visitors can still enjoy the picturesque surroundings from below. The grassy area surrounding the tower adds to its serene atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for relaxation.
A young man in an oxcart told me it was "Taketomi Skytree." Its existence is a mystery in itself, but it's intriguing. I think it probably serves as something like a "morning assembly platform". I was able to climb it back then, but is it no longer possible?
Google review
The tower itself was locked for entry but I got to the base of the stairs. You get s certain degree of overview as you are higher than the buildings. Not much to see.
Helena W — Google review
You cannot climb up any more. But you can still pay 100 yens to take photos from the roof top of a shop behind.
Alvin L — Google review
A tower, where you can see 360 degree of Taketomi Island. Enjoy the traditional house roof from the top of the tower.

Crowded and stairs to top were locked.
Jerry S — Google review
Not a must go, but if you have time @ taketomi and you have enough beach, you could check it out. Ride the bike (electrical powered 👍😁) and it is near to the cow carriage center.
Eric C — Google review
The location of the tower is very strategic, right in the center of the traditional village, the tower is built on a small hill so it provides views of part of the island area. On the side of the tower there is a grass area which adds to the calm and peaceful atmosphere, very good for relaxing. Not far from the Nagominoto Tower there are shops and restaurants with local menus and for shopping for typical Taketomi Island souvenirs.

Iriomote Ishigaki National Park is a stunning destination featuring lush evergreen forests, mangroves, and crystal-clear turquoise waters with vibrant coral reefs. The park encompasses the entire island of Ishigaki and offers opportunities to explore nearby Iriomote and Yubu Islands. Visitors may be fortunate enough to spot rare wildlife such as the Iriomote cat or crested serpent eagle.
The whole island is a hidden jewel! So many things to do: waterfalls, beaches, kayak, diving, road trip. And the sashimis are soooo fresh!

Picturesque island for outdoor lovers! In the day time, you can go canyoning, canyoning, scuba diving , visiting Yubu island and mangroves. At night, you can go wild animal sight seeing or star gazing. Complete your experience by savouring the local delicacies at the restaurants and spending one night at the local B&B.

Ishigaki Yaima Village is a charming recreation of a traditional Okinawan village, nestled on a hill overlooking the picturesque Nagura Bay of Ishigaki Island. This southernmost theme park in Japan features well-preserved Yaeyama houses, some of which are designated as national tangible cultural properties. Visitors can enjoy the serene ambiance while exploring the house-lined streets, trying on traditional Ryukyu kimonos, and painting their own shisha figurines.
This place is highly underrated. We’ve spend a nice day there. You can easily spend 3-4h or more, depending on the activities you do. You can see a traditional dance from the island, feed small squirrel monkeys, and paint your own Shisa statue. It was fun! If you go to the village by bus, I advice to plan ahead, since the last bus back to Ishigaki leaves quite early (otherwise, the nice ladies at the reception can call a taxi for you, but it’s not cheap).
Anne-Sophie D — Google review
I've been to several recreation villages and always like seeing the old architecture and the reconstructions of the past. This village was a great example of what it would have been like a hundred years ago and it wasn't over crowded with people which was nice. Great place to explore and take the family too.
David B — Google review
An excursion activity of our MSC cruise. The key attraction is squirrel monkeys. They were kept in a huge cage with a lot of space for them to play around & fighting for foods? Surprised to see two mother monkeys have their baby monkey holding their back all the time. It, indeed, looks like & about the side if squirrels.
J.David H — Google review
It costs 1,200yen per adult. The weather was so hot when we went and it was hard to explore without drenching in sweat. So make sure to bring an umbrella if you go on a hot summer day! We got to see the created serpent eagle, and a water buffalo which smelled horrid. The most enjoyable part was seeing the squirrel monkeys, they were so adorable! You need to leave your things before entering as they might grab them. They recommend to only bring in your wallet and phones. We only stayed for a little over an hour. It was not crowded at all.
Quincy Q — Google review
We love visiting this village every time we come to Ishigaki! The historic parts of the park are so interesting to look at! We also really love the squirrel monkeys! We’ve also done the shisa painting in the store and it was so much fun! The teacher gave us a small history lesson on shisa dogs and we were so grateful to learn ! Highly recommend !
Chelsea M — Google review
This village is small but very worth visiting if you are planning to go to Ishigaki. The squirrel monkeys are adorable, unafraid of people and allow interactions.
Chan P — Google review
It’s nice to visit this place. It’s full of memories and offers both historical and ecological learning experiences. There are villages, small traditional performances, and a path through the mangroves where you can see mudskippers, crabs, squirrels monkeys and even water buffalo. Must try “pork soba” at front restaurant too. So yummy!
Karittha H — Google review
LOVED IT entrance is 1200yen for adults (card accepted) but the experience you will have in the village esp with the cute little monkeys are way above the worth you get to touch, feed (for extra 300yen, cash only) and hug the human friendly monkeys for limitless time

Nishi Pier, also known as West Pier, is a historic structure located on the western side of Taketomi Island in Japan. Built in 1938, it was originally used for transporting people to cultivate rice plants on neighboring islands. Today, it has become a popular spot for tourists to witness breathtaking sunsets and stargazing opportunities.
They recently repaved the pier so it looks new and clean. The views and vistas are very pretty and definitely worth stopping by if you’re taking a trip to Taketomi Island. There are gonna be people there who will take photos incessantly though so be patient.

Observation Decks & Towers
Hateruma is a remote Japanese island known for its sugarcane plantations, sandy beaches, and traditional minshuku lodgings. The island is located in the southeast part of Hateruma Island and offers stunning starry sky guidance and telescope observation of heavenly bodies. As Japan's southernmost point on a manned island, Hateruma provides an opportunity to see the Southern Cross, which is not visible in Honshu.
Southernmost island of Japan. Easiest way is to take a boat from Ishigaki island. If you come during off-peak season, the boat will be subject to weather condition, so there are chances you could be stuck on the island for a night. But I would not mind. You can see the Southern Cross on the island if you stay overnight. Plus the island has some of the most beaches in Japan. Most tourists come here for just day trips.
Ciboysg W — Google review
Southernmost place in Japan you can go to! I went there a couple of weeks ago and it was absolutely beautiful. I'm from a warm and humid climate, but this place still put me to the test, as I went in early June, which is part of the rainy season, so the humidity can be quite wild (and UV apparently, too, which I found out after getting burned). I'd recommend sunscreen even if it might rain that day and no less than a few bottles of electrolyte water. I chose to circumnavigate most of the island on foot (I'm crazy for this), but most people rent bikes here. I recommend picking the bike unless you're ready to walk for miles. Either way, it was a beautiful walk, and there's a few cool little sites you can stop by on the island as you wish. This is not a very touristy island IMHO. Even the local tourist advertisement stuff from my hotel on Ishigaki Island barely mentioned this island. It's mostly farming and quiet beaches. It's a 1.5 hour ferry to here, or a 1 hour version for the faster boat that may get very bumpy like it did for me. This was one of my favorite rural experiences in Japan. When the local music came on at noon, I thought that was cool. Expect to see lots of crows, goats, and butterflies on this island. There were literally hundreds of butterflies flying around me when I walked on some unnamed roads in the southeast part of the island. In the north, there is a territorial crow about 100m-200m south of the ferry port on the main road (guesstimate), so be careful of that one. The goats were curious and nice. A kind local farmer showed me where a turtle was hiding too. There's also mangrove areas and beaches. The southernmost vending machine was cool too! And I was able to spot Nakamigami island from the northwest corner of Hateruma. (I thought it was Yonaguni at first) This was one of the most memorable walks I have done in Japan. Attached photo: view of Iriomote island from northern Hateruma.

Perfect for a day trip specially if you rent an electric bike/scooter/car. Electric bike for ¥2,200/day was very good as some parts of the island are not flat. On the new moon in a nice weather the starry sky seems be wonderful and it is said it worth stay overnight to enjoy the sky. Beautiful and quiet beaches, no convenience stores, few restaurants and cafes. Surrounded by sugar cane fields and empty roads.

(Translated by Google) ~ Guided by Ryotaro Shiba's book, I went to the southernmost island ~ Hateruma Island, the southernmost island in the Yaeyama Islands, arrived after about a 90-minute ferry ride from Ishigaki Island. It was mid-April, before Golden Week, and before the rainy season, so the weather was extremely pleasant. The sunshine was quite strong, and it was already a pleasant climate to go into the sea. I was truly soothed by the scenery and sea of Hateruma Island. The island has surprisingly many slopes, so I recommend traveling by electric bicycle, or if possible, a moped. It's better to make a reservation during the high season and weekends. I was there on a weekday during the off-season, so I was able to rent a moped without a reservation from a bicycle shop standing with a sign at the port, but the number of bikes available on the island is limited, so if you don't have a means of transportation, it will be a hindrance to your trip. There is only one shop at the port and in the village, and few vending machines, so I recommend preparing drinks and snacks when you leave Ishigaki Island. Sata andagi and Spam rice balls, for example. I left Ishigakijima on the first boat in the morning and returned to Ishigakijima on the last boat. If you are going around by moped, this is enough time. In fact, it might be better to go back with one more bottle. It seems that planes sometimes depart from Ishigakijima, but the airport was closed on this day. It seems that the Yaeyama Tourist Ferry is more common. If you stay overnight, the sunset and the starry sky at night are said to be beautiful. Next time, I would like to relax and take it easy. As a souvenir, I got a bottle of the legendary Awamori, Awanami, No. 3 at the port shop! It was 1,000 yen, but if you drink it in a shop in Tokyo, it would cost 10,000 yen. It depends on the season, but I think you'll be lucky if you come across it. Hateruma Island, please go at least once.

(Translated by Google) I'll never forget the shock I felt when I first saw Nishihama Beach. Who knew there was such a beautiful place in the world? It's a fairly difficult island to reach, requiring a long crossing from Ishigaki Island on a ferry that's prone to cancellations. But it's well worth the effort. It's like a jewel box, packed with all the charms of Okinawa: a sea so beautiful it'll leave you speechless, idyllic sugarcane fields, traditional villages surrounded by coral stone walls, and the legendary awamori. It's large enough that you could easily cycle around it, even if you just take the first ferry in the morning and buy some souvenirs, but it's a special island that's best enjoyed by staying overnight and settling down. Aiyaru Beach is located on the eastern side of Taketomi Island and offers a stunning view of the sunrise over the Pacific Ocean. This tranquil beach is perfect for those seeking a peaceful atmosphere, as it is not crowded. The pristine waters are ideal for gazing out at the sea or admiring the harbor of . However, swimming is prohibited due to fast tidal flows, making it important to exercise caution.
Come in the night to see the stars and also a coconut crab!! Very isolated and far away from the crowds. It is quite rocky during the summer season due to the corals washing up on the shore. Also you can’t swim because it is not fully protected by the reef so there are riptides.

Nice beach nestled beyond a forest, opening out to the ocean. A great spot to watch the sunrise, which appears later than usual for Japan as the island is in the country's westernmost area. If the tide allows, you can walk to the harbor from here.
Zimmj Z — Google review
This place is so remote! We arrived there by bike and before accessing the beach we found a lot of huge paguros. The beach is very isolated and no one was there, we could just see some ferryboats sailing far away we felt marooned and it was great!
Giovanni T — Google review
The road quality is not good and if you consider to visit there by walk… I recommend bike there… There is no space to park car and make u turn…
Doug L — Google review
Nice spot but use a bicycle to reach here
GTL — Google review
Very tranquil and nice beach! Not many tourists. The harbor of 竹富島 is visible and it's easily accessible by bike
Florian P — Google review
Very nice beach with clean pristine waters; only problem is that water flows might be fast and it is a bit risky if you are not a good swimmer. It is an isolated beach, so difficult to find help in case of need.
Giulia E — Google review
This beach is less frequented by visitors but the ride along the way here is amazing - so many butterflies of different species just flitting about, and coming up close to you. It also seems to be known for having unique seashells - a few families were collecting them when we visited.

9Yubu Island Water Buffalo Cart

Tourists can embark on an excursion to Yubu Island via wagons pulled by water buffalo. The island is small and visitors are serenaded by guides playing instruments that are customary to the area.
Loved it. Loved the experience, hanging out with water buffalo’s, listening to the sound of the Sanshin, and exploring the island.
Jay L — Google review
Kids loved it. If you come on your own and not as part of the tour group, you will wait for some time before the staff arrange you on a cart, but that’s ok because it gives you some time to observe the buffaloes and take pictures of the surroundings. The staff driving the cart are very friendly. They will chat with you and tell you facts about the buffalo that is pulling your cart. Some will even take out their sanxian and sing a song. It was an unforgettable experience. Highly rated by the kids.
Dali S — Google review
The buffaloes are actually treated very well! They live a very good life! The drivers also play music to entertain the passengers!
Matthew F — Google review
Was great fun, both to ride and to converse with handlers. You can see they care a great deal about their animals. Verh friendly people and the island is a welcome oasis to spend few hours recharging in tropical surroundings.
Herr D — Google review
It was part of a tour I booked and yeah why not... they told us some infos about the buffalos and on the way back the guy even played the sanshin which was great. But its just a short ride through shallow water and the poor buffalos have to tow so many heavy tourists on those cars...
Kevin D — Google review
This was apart of the tour. Not a big fan of the animals being used in this capacity. They seem to be taken care. The water is very shallow so one could walk across if desired (or if you miss the ride).
Kay B — Google review
So much fun! They also played the shimasen. It was only in Japanese.

Public beach
Coral Beach, located on Hateruma Island in the southernmost tip of Japan, is named after the abundance of coral at its shores. The beach is not your typical sandy shore but rather covered with many dead corals and inhabited by various creatures like crabs. Despite the lack of public facilities, a nearby restaurant offers shower and toilet access for a fee. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery and even spot fish swimming in the clear waters.
Amazingly beautiful beach, protected by a coral reef 1km offshore. Calm and great for kids. Water is crystal clear and a great area for SUP. Unfortunately in some of the coves there is a lot of garbage washed up on the shore.
Powderhound — Google review
The best beach in Kohama! Not many Coral reefs as expected.
Linn T — Google review
Best beach on the island. Both high tide and low tide were great!
Steven — Google review
Great beach even during low tide. Good for snorkelling.
Yana — Google review
Quiet and lovely beach where you can see some small pretty fish swimming in the coral. Best to have some water shoes when going in the water.
James F — Google review
Great small beach on the east of Kohama, great to access the shallow waters, protected by sand barriers at low tides
Quasox W — Google review
Beautiful small sandy sandy beach. No jetskis, no food stands, just a pretty beach. No coral either but maybe farther out in the water.

11Barasu Island

Scenic spot
Barasu Island is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts. It's part of a popular tour that takes visitors to various sightseeing spots, including a mangrove cruise on the Nakama River and a visit to the subtropical botanical garden on Yubu Island. The island is made entirely of coral and offers crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling. Visitors can also spot sea turtles in the area.
(Translated by Google) I visited for the first time on January 3, 2024. About 15 people landed on a snorkeling tour. Although there wasn't much sunlight at this time of year, the visibility was still high and the view was very beautiful. The island itself is smaller than I expected, and I think it would be pretty tough for about 20 people. That was my impression. It was certainly made of coral fragments, and unlike sand, it felt a bit painful even when standing on it. After landing, we went straight to snorkeling, and the island itself didn't have much shallow water, but it got deeper all at once. I'm glad I had a very valuable experience. The water wasn't as cold as I expected and I was able to enjoy snorkeling comfortably. If I have the chance, I would like to go again when there is more sunshine.

(Translated by Google) We signed up for a local tour to Barasu Island (バラス島) to search for sea turtles. We were lucky enough to spot two adorable turtles. Barasu Island is located between Iriomote Island and Hatoma Island in the Nansei Islands, but it's not visible on maps because it's made up of coral reef debris and has no rocky areas. The coral island, formed around 1990, is home to a large coral colony. It's only 2 kilometers from Uehara Port on Iriomote Island, so there are kayak tours available. (Paddling against the waves is tiring, and since I'm lazy, I opted for a boat trip.) Barras Island is also known as the "Miracle Island" because it only surfaces at low tide when the tide is less than 100 centimeters. The vegetation on the island comes from coral fragments pushed by waves from the east and west. In the Northern Hemisphere, Barras Island is believed to be the only island composed of coral fragments. Depending on the location of the coral fragments, the island will move dozens of meters from east to west during seasonal waves or typhoons, and the shape of the island will change as the wind and waves carry away the coral fragments.

I think it's partly due to the effects of high and low tides, but since it's an island made of coral, the size seems to change every time. When the number of people who arrive at the shop of 2 teams is full, it will be full lol. Since it is an island made of coral and not a sandy beach, the sea is extremely clear, and when the weather is nice, the gradation between Baras Island and the sea is really beautiful! ! (Translated by Google) Around Barasu Island, you can enjoy the most beautiful coral in Okinawa (the world?). Many of Okinawa's corals died due to the large-scale bleaching in 2025, but here you can still see healthy corals (tears). This place can only be accessed by tour, but if you visit Ishigaki Island or Iriomote Island, it is definitely worth joining. In winter, when the north wind blows, boats and tours are often canceled, so it is best to go in summer when the sea conditions are calm.
