Mexican restaurant
Restaurant
Restaurante Alcalde, situated in the city's business district, is a culinary gem led by chef Francisco Ruano. The restaurant offers a modern twist on traditional Mexican cuisine with dishes like pepian-based green mole paired with perfectly cooked chicken and chia seed-crusted homemade bread. The rice pudding showcases contrasting textures and flavors, incorporating chocolate sheets and rich soy and dairy components.
We requested vegan options while making our reservation, and I was treated to an amazing vegan tasting menu. Each plate was creative, presented beautifully, and was an exciting tasting experience. The artichoke in white mole sauce may be the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten. The vegan tasting menu that was prepared for me also cost less than the regular tasting menu, which was a delightful surprise to get such a wonderful dining experience at that cost. My friends tasted several dishes and agreed that they were not only delicious, but in some cases, the best dishes of the night, including their non-vegan dishes. But they also thoroughly enjoyed their regular a la carte meals of course. An amazing fine dining experience.

We went to Alcalde for my birthday. Upon arrival, the hostess didn’t greet us, I had to initiate the conversation and let her know I had a reservation. For a high end restaurant like this, I expected a warmer, more attentive welcome. The meal itself was definitely unique, with beautifully presented and delicious dishes, some more memorable than others. Sitting at the counter was an interesting experience, as we could watch the kitchen in action and see the cooking staff at work. Our main waiter was attentive, and a few other servers, who were even more charismatic, brought out some of our dishes and added to the experience. I can understand why some negative reviews point out that a few dishes are just “okay,” but there are also standouts that make the menu worth trying. Overall, it was a special dining experience, the ambience was just ok.
Mayi B — Google review
I was surprised by how easy it was to make the reservation. Although we were booking for a Monday night. We did the à la carte menu and it was the best option for us. The service and the quality of the food was outstanding. Please note this restaurant is not accessible for persons with mobility issues and the bathroom is located up stairs. The ambience could be improved with unique local music that was carefully selected to complement the space and the experience.
Natalia M — Google review
Wow. This place was fabulous. The food was out of this world. I enjoyed every bite from start to finish, I didn’t want the experience to end. The service was top notch and the atmosphere was so fun and inviting. The colors, art, aesthetic and feel of the whole place was excellent. 10/10 would recommend.

I had the pleasure of dining at Ojo in Bangkok during the summer of 2024, and the experience was truly world-class—the food, service, atmosphere, and location all came together flawlessly. Later, in October 2024, I visited Alcalde in Guadalajara for the first time and tried the tasting menu. While the presentation and service were excellent, I found the food to be overly experimental and, frankly, not enjoyable. I gave Alcalde another chance in August 2025, this time ordering à la carte. Once again, the presentation and service were formidable, but the food itself was disappointing—too salty, too “out there,” and ultimately barely edible. Although I initially felt the food merited only one star, it’s clear the team is highly dedicated and puts real effort into presentation and sourcing. For that reason, I’ve chosen to give a more neutral three stars overall. It’s also possible that my palate simply doesn’t align with Alcalde’s culinary vision.
P. N — Google review
Tasting menu at the chef's table was a great experience and I thoroughly enjoyed being able to watch all of the beautiful food come together in the kitchen. The vibes were great and the food wasn't bad. Definitely had some very unique flavors and delicious bites throughout the tasting menu. All of the dishes were visually stunning. The wine pairing left something to be desired though. The pours were quite light, and they reused the same wine for consecutive courses and a couple occasions which was a little disappointing.
Eric H — Google review
A hip place with interesting flavor profiles and delicious drinks. However, their dishes can sometimes eschew common sense savoriness for hit-or-miss courses. Nevertheless, this is a tasting menu experience with something to say. My party of 4 all had the tasting menu and we had the pleasure of sitting at the chef’s table. The wine pairings were decent. I was not challenged or inspired to explore past “this goes with this because it has a similar flavor profile”. Still, good picks that include some fun choices like orange wine. The courses are small. A few of them can be a little challenging, but nothing too difficult to eat. The clear standouts are their peanut salad (the second strongest and most bold flavor of the evening) and the shiitake mushroom dessert (exceptional). The service is, simply put, flawless. Our waiter was playful, informative, and attentive. Lastly, yes, Alcalde is quite spendy. We paid around $1300 for 4 people, though that included wine pairings and cocktails. I highly recommend this place for a special night out.

Better for breakfast but you can also go there for a quick drink at night, the charcuterie board is a good option. They close really early though, so be ready for them bringing you the check without asking for it.

Bakery
Karmele is a small cafe known for its tempting pastries and friendly service. Despite some negative reviews, visitors found the service prompt and the atmosphere pleasant. The almond croissant was particularly praised, reminiscent of those found in France. The cafe offers a variety of pastries, with highlights including the lemon pie and rosca de nuez. While some felt that the coffee options were lacking, others enjoyed their lattes.
One of the best places in GDL for bread and pastries. They got artisanal breads with masa madre, and even really good local bread called Birote. Coffee is great too. It’s a nice place to hang with friends. The only thing I wouldn’t recommend is bagel🤣 It gets busy so you will need to be patient and not in an hurry.
Alice L — Google review
A HIP BAKERY: Searching for a bakery with a pleasant vibe and delicious breads? Karmele has all that and more. I tried the chocolate Karmelito, a decadent croissant fashioned into the shape of a roll. The carrot cake was also tasty, but with less pop. My wife tried a panini. The toasted birote was well appointed with tomatoes and a bed of sprouts. A house-blend mustard gave it just a kick of tanginess. The coffees are prepared fresh and spot on. A beautiful selection of sourdough breads are also available, though we we did try them on this occasion. The only negative is that—because of its popularity—there are sometimes long waiting times, especially if you order a panini or other item that requires some preparation. Notwithstanding, Karmele is a definite keeper.
Jamie P — Google review
I went with high expectation after my friends being in awe of pastry here. I knew about long lines - so prepare for them even in the evening. This is a hype place. Pastry itself looks amazing, however its taste could be better. I took Berlinese 6/10: It contained some low quality chocolate which had too much sugar. Babka 4/10: very dry. Looks amazing, but is too dry. Karmele con Guyaba 8/10 - this was good, French pastry + guyaba. The thing is it’s too sweet, it should be sweet, but I think they use extensive amount of sugar. Advantages: Amazing presentation of pastry, great and fast service. Place is very nice located, it looks very nice, atmosphere is so vibrant.

Guadalajara Eats 2024 #4, Cafe/bakery #20: One of my favorite bakeries not only in Guadalajara but all of Mexico. Have been here 7-8 times and have never had a poor experience. Definitely order a karmelito (or 2) while here (depending on what's available) and a rollo de cacao or cardamomo. The cheesecake and croissants are great as well. If you're more in the mood for something savory, their quiche is great as are their sandwiches. Their hot coffees and cold brews are wonderful here, too. The only thing I've ever ordered that I didn't like was their banana bread. Otherwise, I have thoroughly enjoyed all their offerings. The only knock I can think of is that they seldomly have all their flavors of karmelitos available. It's to be expected though as they're that damn good. Karmele was a major reason I returned to Guadalajara this April.
Tristan ( — Google review
The most unfortunate thing was I went here on my way out of town and missed out going daily. We ordered the choclatin and a plain croissant, a latte and a flat white to go. The coffees were hot, which doesn’t seem to be a thing from my experience. So, I was happy with that and they were delicious The pastries were flaky and absolutely delicious. In a world of oversized pastries covered in all sorts of toppings, these were the essence of quality baking. Simply perfect. I will definitely return on my next trip and look forward to trying more options. I should also add that there was adequate staff who were attentive and helpful.
Gary S — Google review
I read all the reviews of this place before going. Lots of complaints about service and flies. But I went with an open mind. The service was very friendly and prompt. There was a fly repellant device on the counter and I saw no flies on the pastries. The sweeter things were enclosed in a glass case. I had a ham and cheese croissant. The croissant was perfect. The sandwich was heated properly in an oven so the croissant stayed crispy. I could taste the quality of the olive oil in the salad dressing. Great place, reasonable prices. Lots of people working on their laptops inside, but plenty of space still. I will com back.
Rich T — Google review
One of these lovely cafés which offer really good pastry. The espresso was very tasty as well the cheese cake even though it was a bit too sweet for my taste.

Masa Madre La boutique del Trigo is a delightful bakery that captures the essence of artisanal bread-making. Nestled in a charming area, it offers an impressive variety of breads, bagels, and sweet baked goods that are sure to tantalize your taste buds. During my visit, I indulged in a turkey panini and crostini with spinach alongside a heavenly buttery sweet bread paired with refreshing green juice. The staff was incredibly friendly and took the time to explain each dish.
The place is beautiful, the service is amazing, and the food is the most exquisite. Today I had the Roast Beef Toast, a beautifully orchestrated ensemble of textures and flavors. The bread is spread with delicious goat cheese, which is topped with roast beef and finished with a date jam and balsamic dressing. One of the best and most delicious dishes I’ve had, served amazingly quick. 10/10 would recommend.

Delicious and amazing! I go here several times a week. My favorite items are the Soho cookie, San Francisco loaf, vegan bagel sandwich, and the vegan chocolatin. But everything is absolutely delicious. Thank you Masa Madre for baking such good food!! 🙏🤤
Sabine L — Google review
Was staying at NH and walking casually by in the morning I caught a smell of delicious bread so I decided to stop by and check it out. there’s a great assortment of bread, bagels and baked sweet bread. I ordered a turkey panini, a crostini spinach and a buttery sweet bread that I don’t know what it was called with a green juice. The guy explained what was in each thing, was super nice. Sat at a table where I could see the beautiful lush street, everything was delicious and the sweet bread was heaven! good thing i couldn’t really buy any to take cause I was flying out.
Mar X — Google review
It's one those places that become too popular and patrons stop behaving nicely. The parking is very limited and driver do dangerous parking maneuvers to have a parking space. The sitting it's also limited and in brunch hours clients get aggressive holding a table hours after finishing eating and when trying to get a table, as they don't have a system to assign places. My advice... Buy the good bakery items they sell and run away from the stress.
Daniel P — Google review
Totally walked by this and it didn't show up anywhere....the cafe next door is entirely vegan besides one cookie. They even have a vegan menu!! Never found decent vegan pastry in Mexico, croissants very crispy and butter like.ñxk

Great place for bread and drinks. Baguette is awesome. There are also specialty breads with awesome recipes including bread with charcoal. If you are in a hurry go there and ask for a charcuterie sandwich and pair it with kombucha or a cold brew.

(Translated by Google) The shell piece crumb better than others because it is not foamy. But the piece can have more intention, even a touch of wholemeal flour. The scab all fell off and I ended up putting the rest in the trash can. Business for business with a bread idea.

(Translated by Google) The artisan bread is very delicious, they have a wide variety of pieces to choose from and they are all very tasty. The lady who serves is very kind and treats the bread with great care when she puts it in the basket and when she puts it in the paper bag. Excellent option to try if you are from another state, like me who visited the bakery from #slp. Pastes Mineria in Guadalajara is a must-visit for those craving delicious, flaky pastries. These Mexican pastes are reminiscent of the Cornish pasty and have gained popularity among locals and tourists alike. The shop offers a variety of savory flavors, including green mole, red, potato with meat, hawayano, pepperoni with mozzarella. The crispy puff pastry and delightful fillings make these pastes irresistible.
I ordered the Hawaiian pastry and it was so fluffy and buttery, the filling was as delicious as! Well come back again!

We came here upon a recommendation for the tuna and potato pastry. Unfortunately it was served almost stone cold and we had to throw it out after a bite. I’ve had experiences with cold pastries before and they never work out good for your belly!
Britt J — Google review
I am absolutely addicted to these pastries. The fillings, the fine philo crust and the price (20 pesos) are unbeatable. I wish this was a global chain!

(Translated by Google) These are DELICIOUS!! I still need to try the Sweets, they are still at $32 Each, it seems reasonable to me for the area, but they are Very good, highly recommended They also accept payment by card, in case you don't have cash, they charge you there 😁 (Original) Estas DELICIOSOS!!

(Translated by Google) Excellent Within the Chapultepec area, these are some of the fast foods you should try. This place is open from Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 7:30 pm, resting on Sundays. They have relatively little time in the area and have gained the taste of both locals and foreigners. They are made with crispy puff pastry and their taste is quite pleasant. Among my favorite savory favors are green mole, red, potato with meat, hawayano, pepperoni with mosarella. Not to mention the dulves, because they are chocolate with nutella, blackberry with nutella, apple, pineapple, rice pudding, banana with milkshake. The only bad thing is that there is no place to sit comfortably and enjoy your pastry.

(Translated by Google) We always shop there for business, and today the managers gave us less than the bill. We trusted them and didn't check. The girl who answered kept calling and stopped answering. When we arrived, she denied it completely, but they did charge us the full amount. Bad experience, and terrible for the employee. Coffee shop
Cafetario Monraz is a charming local coffee shop with a small but delightful menu. The cappuccino is perfectly frothed, and the Veracruz espresso offers a perfect balance with great body. The V60 from Oaxaca has good notes and a smooth finish. Pair your coffee with their very moist banana bread with semisweet chocolate. The shaded patio surrounded by plants provides a peaceful setting to enjoy breakfast and coffee in this quiet neighborhood.
This is a delightful local Cafetario. I enjoy having a coffee and a bite of breakfast on the shaded patio. They surround the patio with plants and have taken great care to make sure the patio is shaded. The traffic is so minimal in this neighborhood that you can truly enjoy a morning coffee. If you are in the neighborhood give it a try.

The best part small coffee menu! Exactly what is needed to try and enjoy the coffee. Cappuccino perfectly frothed. In the grinder at the time, Veracruz (lavado), perfect balance with great body. Espresso americano, also using Veracruz was brought out at perfect temperature (not extra hot).V60, Oaxaca (natural), good notes with smooth finish. Banana bread with semisweet chocolate was very good, very moist and not sweet.

Food is normal, prices are good, service is a bit slow, and not a big menu to pick from. But... They do have vegan and vegetarian options that taste just as good as normal option would.

Nestled in a charming neighborhood, Bread & Butter is a delightful little shop that has quickly become a favorite for locals and visitors alike. Known for its freshly baked sourdough bread, this cozy spot offers an inviting atmosphere perfect for breakfast or simply picking up some delicious pastries. While the cookies are a standout treat—especially the chocolate chip variety—their scones have garnered rave reviews as some of the best around.
Food is always great. The prosciutto eggs Benny is my favourite because they put so much prosciutto on it. I also come here to buy fresh sourdough bread loafs.

They actually close at 1:30, not at 2 pm. I came in at 1:30 and was refused service

Cozy place. Bread is delish. Prices are ok and the food was tasty, had brunch there. Only downside is parking (kinda hard depending of the time) and the time of the day you go, it's on a busy street during peak hours. Rec tho👌
