1Akakura Kanko Resort

Ski resort
Nestled in the picturesque setting of Mount Myōkō, Akakura Kanko Resort is one of the oldest ski resorts globally and offers a range of experiences for skiers of all levels. The resort features beginner-friendly slopes, challenging ungroomed courses for expert skiers, and a snow park. The iconic Akakura Kanko Hotel provides a luxurious ski-in, ski-out experience with its vibrant red roofs and proximity to the slopes.
Akakura Kanko Hotel is a nice place to stop for a cup of coffee, lunch or just for the views while skiing at the Akakura/Myoko slopes. Easy access (ski in & out). Excellent food and deserts to die for.

Literally waited in the lift ticket queue for 1hour yesterday! (Monday From 9:45am to 10:45) Only one person taking payment, but 2 staff at ticket counter. Ridiculous. If you’re buying 1-3day tickets use the QR code advance payment option and skip the line up, but more online options need to be made available. We only wanted a 4 hour ticket and therefore had to line up. Resort itself was fine, no lift queues.
Terry T — Google review
Awesome snow sports area, tons of ungroomed runs. Will definitely be back.
E Z — Google review
A variety of runs. Awesome off piste area to explore and have fun in deep powder. There is also a kebab shop at bottom of Hotel 2 chair lift. Love the kebab there!
DaHuZi J — Google review
The better side of the Akakura resort with more challenging runs, better terrains and tree skiing, enough to keep you entertained for 2 to 3 days. However, despite Covid, the place gets very crowded over the weekend with long queue to get the lift tickets and much longer queue to get on the Gondola. There are less freshies to be found as compared to other resorts (despite no presence of foreign tourists) and hence, I will avoid this place once international travel is allowed. To get here, take train from Tokyo to Nagano station, and from there to Myokokogen station and get the hotel/ryokan to pick you up from the station. The Kanko resort is about 5mins walk to Akakura Onsen. There are also plenty of ski in ski out accommodations in this area.
Emma T — Google review
Great mountain but the queue to buy tickets in the morning is ridiculous. Other large resorts have already gone online, so no wait needed for pre-bought tickets, while Akakura is still paper based. This wastes 30 min of a ski day… for which we still pay for tickets. Please please put in automated gates and online purchase.
Andrew D — Google review
Very nice hotel at Myoko Kogen ski resort. And the food that they serve is spectacular as well. We are the only foreign guests when we are there and the ski is not yet open for another week even though it is snowing everyday already.

Beautiful area of Northeast Japan, with scenic mountains and also low areas that are calming and a great getaway, only two hours away from bustling Tokyo.

Myoko village is a pretty little place with a few cafes and restaurants. Easy access to ski slopes - walking distance to Akakura Onsen lifts and not too far to Akakura Kanko ( walk or shuttle).

This myoko kogen is a great set of ski resorts. The snow was metres deep, the bars and food shops are good Great time to be visiting this area as the crowds have not yet found this great area.

Ikenotaira ALPEN BLICK Ski Resort is part of the Myoko Kogen area, which includes five resorts. It offers 15 courses suitable for beginners and intermediates, along with two short advanced runs. The resort features a Wide, Long Run slope for skiers to enjoy ample space, a Mavericks Park with jumps and rails for thrill-seekers, and a Kids Garden equipped with a conveyor belt for easy sledding.
Recently stayed here for 3 nights, and had the best time. Service was amazing from the start, we missed our train there and needed to change our shuttle bus pick up time, which they were so lovely about and were quick to respond and arrange via email (we didn’t have a working phone line to call). Everyone at the resort was lovely and friendly, from the beautiful front desk staff to the ski rentals. The ski slopes lead directly down to the resort entrance, which made popping in and out of the hotel (for the toilet, to eat, for a rest) very convenient, especially as newbie skiers. The snow fields were also very well maintained, regularly being flattened out for walking etc. We looked forward to breakfast and dinner every day (buffet style), for dinner there were chefs frying fresh tempura/karaage in front of you, and personal hotpot if you wish, which were lovely options after a long cold day in the snow. Even at the very end, we were delivered back to the station via shuttle, where our lovely driver also alighted to make sure we didn’t struggle with getting train tickets back. We had the best time at Alpen Blick, and would absolutely recommend this place to others! Would love to come back :)

Great place to ski for beginner and intermediate skiers/boarders. Decent length of runs nice powder, uncrowded slopes.
Kyle A — Google review
Nice ski and snowboard resort for the beginners! Specially for the snowscoot riders.
Ml7177 — Google review
Fantastic choice for beginner and low intermediate skiers with its wide placid groomers and long runs. Beautiful views. Lifts reasonably fast. Not a lot of variety, but good for one, possibly two day.
Ian B — Google review
Can be a bit tricky to get to with the local bus system, but a decent mix of easy slopes for beginners and some more intricate forest routes and jumps for more advanced skiers and snowboarders. Very friendly and efficient staff!
N L — Google review
The resort itself is ok. Unfortunately I am in a period of not too much snow. Off piste, tree run is not quite good at the moment. This place supposed to be packed with snow normally. The design of resort is fine. Enough beginners to intermediate runs for a day or two. Have a nice park for park players. Some runs very good for ground tricks. Food in restaurant is fine and reasonably priced. Remember to bring a ticket/ lift pass holder because it is not using electronic pass. It is old fashioned ticket.
Will W — Google review
Awesome Japanese feel! Hardly any lift lines. Great & reasonably priced restaurants. Great slopes for beginner and intermediate skiers. Brilliant terrain park. In-bounds tree runs for intermediates to advanced. Make sure you bring cash. No ATM and ticket office and restaurants don't take card.

Ski resourt itself quite tiny, however there are not bad back-country options here, also very good dinner option with great local craft beer

Ski resort
Nestled in the stunning Myoko Kogen region, Myoko Suginohara Ski Resort is a winter wonderland that caters to skiers of all skill levels. With its well-groomed slopes and a dedicated snow park, it’s perfect for families and beginners alike. The resort boasts breathtaking views of distant Mount Fuji, adding to the picturesque experience.
We had two amazing days skiing here. Long runs and brilliant snow. Lift pass Q only busy at 9 when lots of people arrive and that’s the only time we queued. Once people are on the mountain there are no real queues ( this was mid week ). Great for all levels ( you can get your pass on line also which means no Q, scan you bar code, collect pass and off you go (WAmazing)).Usual places to grab lunch on the mountain or at the base
Martin W — Google review
Great ski resort, pretty icy conditions in the middle of March. Very empty on a weekday. The 8.5km ride from top to bottom is a good leg workout! Our instructor was a pro and very helpful to improve!
Akira — Google review
Love the nice long runs! Our favourite in the area so far, we were lucky to have powder snow for 3 days. Fantastic slopes for all levels. For snowboarders we suggest to avoid going on the way to the bottom as it gets very flat some walking is required before getting to the bottom lift to bring u up to the main chair lifts.
J ( — Google review
My favorite resort! I tried many of the Nagan area ski resorts and Suginohara is the one that I keep coming back to the most. Tree skiing is amazing, a lot of snow, long wide slopes to practice, and not crowded:)
Mindaugas T — Google review
Came here on a big powder day! It was powder everywhere even on a the groomed slopes. Most of the chairlifts were fast and working. Will come again!
Terence T — Google review
Long groomed runs were such a pleasure to ski down! The resort is big, so there were barely queues once we got onto the mountain. My favorite resort in Myoko - chairlifts moved pretty fast when there wasn’t wind and there was plenty to choose from for beginners to advanced skiers. The chairlifts with bubbles were helpful on days where it was dumping.
Janel L — Google review
Probably my favorite resort. I have been skiing in Japan for 17 years. This resort is modern with fast quad lifts and the gondola. The snow park is possibly the widest run in Japan. Huge powder runs. A cute little village section with some good local food. The only downside is the access.. really need a car to get out here
Andrew H — Google review
Good runs for all ski or board abilities, great views of surrounding mountains/Mt Fuji on a clear day. The park is one of the best in the area despite a few kooky features. Lifts are all quick with a good gondola taking you 3km up mountain. Restaurant options are good but not many vegetarian options available. The 8.5km run is great fun and will burn the legs of all skiing or boarding abilities

Seki Onsen Ski Area is a small, no-frills resort known for its deep powder snow and steep slopes. It has gained a cult reputation among skiers for offering some of the best snow in Japan, with up to six meters of soft powder. Despite its size, the ski area's interesting topography and heavy snowfall make it a paradise for powder hounds.
Great vibes, wonderful skiing at this indie resort. All about natural ungroomed snow with great terrain - not for someone looking for comfy lifts and groomers. Thank you for the charm of this place!
Matej M — Google review
Seki onsen ski area is privately owned by a very nice and cool family. The runs are mostly in groomed and the food is home cooked style and it is THE BEST ski area lunch I have ever had in Japan! The onsen is also one not to be missed! The onsen is red in color and the aroma is amazingly calming! Check them out if you love ungroomed runs!
Ben K — Google review
This was my favourite spot for our biggest powder day. If theres a big snow day, make sure to head here. It’s low elevation gain but it makes up for it in charm and its punk rock feel.
Danielle R — Google review
Epic powder heaven. Not for beginners. Be ready to hike and self rescue.
Alex B — Google review
Great resort for more experienced skiers. Only two lifts and a very casual vibe to the whole thing. Have fun and be safe. Ski with friends!
Saskia A — Google review
Super small, only two lifts, one of them is a sketchy one-seater. But a lot of fun on a powder day, lots of tree runs available. So if the snow is good, check this place for a day..
Godard K — Google review
Small family owned resort Steep, great tree runs, great pow Not a beginner field, not somewhere ski patrol will hold your hand and baby you We absolutely scored here I'll be back!
Hannah F — Google review
Indeed great snow here but you'll get bored quickly with only two lifts, and one (the single pizzabox) was closed the day we came... The primary lift only accesses two runs, one groomed and one ungroomed.... Seems there is opportunity for a bit of exploration for backcountry deep powder, so snowboarders seem to love it here. We spent a half-day afternoon as a warm up to full days at the bigger resorts, not a bad option if you arrive around 12:30 and only 3000 yen. There are no crowds here but you could say that about anywhere in Myoko.... Slope-side restaurant was charming.

(Translated by Google) This mountain is for intermediate climbers, but beginners can also climb it if they climb slowly. There's a waterfall and a great view. You'll want to be prepared for the chain sections. Don't forget your gloves. Many people hike Mt. Hiuchi and Mt. Hiuchi. This summer's heat is intense. It feels like a real battle against the heat. (Translated by Google) Starting from Tsubame Onsen Iwatoya (542), the concrete path is well maintained and the climb is gentle and easy. (630) We arrived at Akakura Onsen, a water source. (645) Heading towards the Komyo Falls entrance, there was an open-air bath. From here, the concrete path ends and the climb begins steeply. From Kita Jigokudani Junction (711), climb along the stream and then onto the steep climb known as Munetsuki Hachijo (746). (823) We arrived at Tengudo. There is a portable toilet area. This is a wide area, so most people were taking a rest. From here, it was mostly uphill, passing Kozenji Pond (858) and the wind hole (859) to the base of the lava dome. There was a long section requiring chains, but the footing was solid and we could climb without chains. From there, it was a steady climb up the rocky terrain. (1025) The summit of the South Peak (2,454m). The north side was covered in clouds, but the views were open everywhere else, with views of Mount Takatsuma, Mount Yake, and Mount Hiuchi. Descending from the northern peak (2445m) at 1100. It was an incredibly steep climb, and I realized it must be tough for anyone climbing from here. At 1221, I took a rest on a bench at the Chosukeike junction. From here, I headed towards Kurosawaike Pond. Just beyond there was a water source in the stream. The water was cold and delicious, and I stocked up on water for the night. I crossed the outer rim of the mountain, where there was a lot of bamboo grass making it difficult to walk, and after a short, steep climb up a chain section, I finally reached Okura Norikoshi at 1358. Everything around Mt. Myoko is really tough! At 1429, I reached Kurosawaike Hut. From here, it was another gentle climb to Chausuyama at 1513. I descended gently, and finally arrived at Takayaike Hut at 1537 after descending a rocky path. I realized how naive I was, imagining the marshlands of Oze. While an entrance fee is required, the trail is well-maintained. First, follow the well-maintained boardwalk, then pass through a rocky forest, and you'll soon be over 2,000 meters. The open, pumice pine area, with the sound of the babbling river, is a soothing sight and sound, perfect for a digital detox. After passing Kurosawa Hut, the mountain is clearly formed by a long-ago eruption, and the rocky path continues. Families will appreciate the ski school and dedicated snow parks designed for kids, ensuring everyone has a fantastic time on the slopes.
Akakura Kanko Akakura Onsen ski areas in Myoko are well groomed, long and not crowded at all. And together with nearby Suginohara it’s a magical place to ski and snowboard too. The local food is exceptional.
Katarina G — Google review
The ski resort is connected to Akakura Kanko which I would suggest purchase combines two mountain tickets else you will fill it too small for one mountain alone. There's a big flat space in the middle of the mountain where the restaurants are.
Kenneth T — Google review
It's a quiet "one street" town and at the tail-end of the ski season it's even quieter, seemingly populated by more Australian ski instructors than locals or even tourists. Food choices are limited and did not pass muster for the more discerning taste buds. Ski slopes are definitely very comfortable for the absolute beginner. Runs are relatively short and combined with the leisurely lifts makes for a very relaxed ski experience. It has gorgeous views and with a little bit of investment this town could really light up.
George L — Google review
(Feb 2025, weekday) + There's a nice long easy slope that is slightly toward the harder side for practice purposes and enjoyment - Commuting between slopes is a complete nightmare. A lot of flat ground, a lot of struggling - A lot of lifts are closed. Not acceptable considering that the lift ticket is quite expensive (6000yen/adult/day; ~USD$39)
Sam — Google review
A lovely ski resort perfect for beginners and low intermediate skiers. Advantages include wide gentle slopes and a charming small town vibe. Disadvantages are the longish traverses between lifts, which are aging and slow.
Ian B — Google review
This place is heaven. Getting the best snow in all of Japan, maybe even all of the world. This is my go to when taking a snow trip away from home. When there is enough snow this place is a big open playground. With plenty of lifts and runs to suit all levels of skill. There is plenty of accommodation choices and not so many restaurants. This mountain is roughly a 6 hour drive away from Tokyo. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for an escape to the best snow possible. You need to visit during Jan and Feb for the best possible fresh powder available.

One of the two historical ski slope located at the foot of Mt. Myoko. This gelande tends to be lower in altitude than the Kanko side but has nice runs in the trees and wide groomed slopes. The slopes are located wide along the mountain so there are quite a few flat traverse you need to do in order to get to one side to the other, but each slope tends to be pretty empty even on a Saturday. Nighter runs until 10PM but not included in the one day or the multi-day pass. Get the 1day passport or the nighter pass separately if you want to go long.

Naena Falls is a stunning 55-meter-high waterfall located in the Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park, just a short drive from Akakura Onsen Village. It's accessible year-round but is particularly beautiful in summer and autumn when the surrounding foliage bursts into vibrant colors. The waterfall, also known as the Earthquake Waterfall due to its thunderous crash, pours a massive volume of water down a basalt cliff into the Seki River.
Fun hike! The road is closed in the winter so we had to trek extra far. Several inches of fresh snow made the entire area extra beautiful.
Logan L — Google review
Naena Waterfall is powerful and impressive, surrounded by beautiful nature and easy walking trails. When I visited, it had just rained heavily, so the water was muddy and rushing fast instead of the usual clear blue. Even with the murky water, the sheer force and sound of the falls were incredible to experience. I’d love to come back on a sunny day to see it at its best.

The sky widens here; the air tastes faintly of the sea. Jōetsumyōkō stands between mountains and water — a crossroads of weather and stories. The train hums through, leaving echoes of rain on glass. Tourist Tip: Gateway to Myoko Kogen ski resorts. Local bus connections from the west exit. Excellent winter destination with onsens and powder snow.

Very clean and peaceful station. Shinkansen schedule is almost every hour. Going to Tokyo from the station only takes less than 2hrs . And Kanazawa 1.5 hrs. View is spectacular during winter. Lotte Arai ski resort is only few minutes by car.

Too expensive and too crowded! The lifts were not seated to capacity. Sometimes Only ONE person per car designed for FOUR people! And the first class lines moved quickly but everyone else (who still payed ¥7,500 for a day pass) had to wait in LONG, SLOW MOVING lines! Don't waste your money or your time. Ride elsewhere

The ski experience here was amazing. The courses are very well made, and are divided into categories based on the skill of the individual (beginner, intermediate and expert). The courses are made fair for everyone and are all well maintained. For some people, ski lift tickets can be included into the hotel price, but most will have to purchase one. There is also a gondola which can be used by skiers, as well as people who just want to enjoy the beautiful views. Ski equipment and cloths rental is also available.

DaHuZi J — Google review
Skiing in mid December There has been 100-180cm of snow but they still won't open most of the runs. All ski instructors believe they should be open with the amount of snow but nothing has opened up in 4 days we've been here. They haven't even prepared the lifts for these "almost open" runs. Unfortunately I get the feeling that it's to save costs by running only one lift. Pretty disappointed as some of us were hoping to learn (especially with the advertisment of so many green runs) and all that is available are some pretty challenging blues. I understand that a lot of this is condition dependant, but this feels like cost cutting, hence the review. That said, the 2 blues that are open are incredible, the powder is lovely, snow is dry and crisp, and the individual staff members are lovely. The lessons, while expensive, are good quality and cater to all levels. Attached is an image of the snow cam at the closed lift with no chairs attached

(Translated by Google) This station retains traces of the height of the bubble economy. Once bustling with passengers amid the ski boom, it now lies deserted, leaving behind an indescribable sense of emptiness. The remains of the boat-shaped ticket gate, wide staircases, rails, and a steel-framed platform roof create a world reminiscent of a novel or game, embodying the forgotten past of a snowy hometown. Perhaps it could be likened to a time capsule of the bubble era. Passing through this station brings with it a sense of nostalgia, a strange illusion of returning to a hometown or skiing trip in a time unknown to us. Formerly a boundary station between the Niigata and Nagano branches of the Shinetsu Main Line, the two companies are now separated at this station after the company was privatized. The station itself is under the jurisdiction of the Echigo Tokimeki Railway's Prancing Horse Line. There are no direct trains except for special or group trains, so those traveling from Nagano to Niigata, or vice versa, from Naoetsu to Nagano, must transfer here. How does it feels to have a boat ride surrounded by mountains ? Yesterday my family went sightseeing at lake Nojiri and we took a speed boat round the lake where we had a good scenic view of the mountains and the small island in the middle of the lake. It was a Low season and we can easily go around the lake without much traffic. Occasionally you will see some people fishing at the lake, I supposed is a great place to catch some fresh fishes. Will definitely recommend this place to spend your summer where you have the sun, the mountains, the lake, the wave and the cool winds, not to forget the perfect scenic. Cheers

ロッヂ・ハンター is a family-run accommodation that offers a warm and friendly atmosphere. Guests appreciate the tidy and warm drying room, delicious dinner and breakfast, as well as clean and cozy rooms. The Japanese family who runs the inn goes above and beyond to ensure guests are comfortable and prepared for their snow adventures. Additionally, the inn's restaurant offers great local craft beers and delicious sukiyaki. Despite being busy, the staff provide quick service with a friendly attitude.
Can’t recommend Hunter lodge enough, the family that run the lodge are so lovely and the accomodation is great. Private onsens are a nice touch and the accomodation is so close to the ski fields. Even a great restaurant attached to the lodge with great dishes!

The lodge is run by the friendliest, most helpful family we have had the pleasure of meeting. From the moment we arrived nothing was too much trouble and we were treated like royalty the whole stay. The family even bought our 2 kids gifts on our departure. We will definitely be back.

Three of us went to Hunter Lodge for dinner on 2 March 2024. We ordered a bunch of dishes to share, however, a Yakitori dish didn’t arrive so I asked a staff that it was missing. The guy who looks like an owner rushed out the kitchen and started blaming us that it was already served. It was obvious that the dish had not been served and staff also said they didn’t recall to bring the dish. He left without anything but puzzled and frustrated us for their mistakes. After 10 minutes or so, the dish arrived. A staff brought it apologetically. When paying the bill, no apology was made so I told the cashier the owner should have apologised for his mistake at least. An enjoyed dinner turned sour because of the owner’s arrogant behaviour. Especially he should behave in front of a young child. Never visit again.

(Translated by Google) Last time my son rented a restroom, while I was waiting outside, my son was yelling at the store owner for some reason inside the store. When he noticed me outside, he yelled at me and yelled at me for not being able to discipline my child. He was quite furious. It seems that the child (junior high school student) did not say thank you to the store owner after borrowing the restroom. When I asked him why he apologized and left the place without saying hello to the child, My son seemed to think the shop owner was a customer of the shop, and when he came out of the bathroom, they made eye contact, but he just walked past without saying a word. After that, things unfolded as described above. The point is that there was a mutual misunderstanding. My son is not shy and can greet anyone. Apparently, he was so surprised by the sudden yelling that he couldn't come up with an excuse. He ended up unilaterally yelling at my son and loudly abusing me as a parent. This is the true nature of a shopkeeper. Sekiyama Shrine, established in 708 during the Nara period, is a significant site for the Mt. Myoko faith and is revered as a village shrine. The shrine's history dates back over 1300 years and it hosts an annual fire festival featuring traditional dances and bojutsu demonstrations. This staff-fighting technique has historical roots from mountain priests who developed it for protection after Sekiyama was attacked and many temples were burned down.

The dragon flag of Sekiyama Shrine is said to have been a gift from Uesugi Kenshin, and is 72 centimeters long and 53 centimeters wide, on a red rasa background, with the rising dragon and descending dragon blue dragons embroidered with gold and silver thread. The grounds include the former Sekizan Hozoin Garden, a nationally designated cultural property, and the Fire Festival, which inherits the tradition of Shugendo, is held every July, and is designated as an intangible cultural property by the prefecture. Etakayama and its mountain demon region. Belief in mountains has a long history, and in the Heian period, a dojo for the mountain chief's post was established as a place for the syncretization of Shintai, and in the Middle Ages, Kyuzoin appeared as a betto in charge of the festival of Sekizan Gongen, and became the place where Mt. He exercised great power as the ruler of the lord. The purple glory of Sekizan during this period is described in later documents as ``Shichido Kamori'' and ``Sobō 72 Wards.'' Sekizan Gongen and Betto's Hozoin greatly declined in 1582 when they were burned down by the Oda chief's army, but in the Edo period Hozoin was reestablished as a subsidiary temple of Higashieizan Kan'eiji (Tendai sect). , the festival of Sekiyama Gongen was also revived. At the Sekiyama Shrine Grand Festival (commonly known as the Fire Festival), which continues to this day, some of the Buddhist rituals from this time have been passed down as folk performing arts such as ``Kariyamabushi's stick-wielding'' and ``Matsubiki.'' ・The current main building of Sekiyama Shrine is a gabled building made of high-quality zelkova wood. Reconstruction began in 1809 and was completed in 1818. The main shrine, shrine, and worship hall are integrated into one structure, and each part has many carvings. Also, in the innermost part of the shrine The palace in which it was enshrined was built in Gomasha style and made of shingles, and was built in 1790, prior to the rebuilding of the shrine building. It was erected. The details, such as the alternating red and white coloring of the tips of the eaves, show off the gorgeous design. Madarao Mountain Resort is a large ski area located on the border of Niigata and Nagano prefectures, offering 31 ski runs accessible by 15 lifts. It is known for its powder and freestyle runs, as well as a snow park. The resort caters to all skill levels, making it popular for families and groups. Additionally, it provides summer activities such as hikes and zip-lining.
We have just left and were in Madarao for ten nights and days. We LOVED our stay. The snow was awesome. For such a small resort the food was excellent. (You must book but that was not difficult) One thing to note: there is no ATM machine and you need cash for buses, and some food outlets. We found it very easy to get to other resorts for day trips.

Such a great resort. Friendly. Great piste and off-piste and tree runs. Well-positioned chairs. Some really beautiful tracks on Traverse and across into Tangram. Excellent variety for beginners and intermediate as well. Ungroomed blacks are very good. Now one of my favourite ski resorts.

I have visited Japan 5 times now to different mountains for the snow. I have to say that whilst the snow is amazing Madarao is my least enjoyed. There is plenty of powder, tree runs, natural halfpipes and park obstacles but what let's this down is the prices and the overall vibe. First off all, there is no night life at all. Unlike Myoko and Niseko, Madarao is very limited and expensive when it comes to all things outside of the slopes. At most I would say there are max 10 restaurants (it may sound a lot, but they are open at various times and some only have a small dining area) available off the slopes which you need to book in days in advanced as to not miss out, prices for each meal would be roughly $30aud per person for a main and a drink. There are 3 little convenience stores with limited products and limited sizes (again quite highly priced). I found that if your not out in the snow this is a really boring place, I love the snow and even I couldn't wait to leave Madarao. There was one day on our trip that was a total white out, we found ourselves laying in bed watching movies all day with no other options. Myoko and Niseko offer more of a range for everything plus exceptional snow. Whether it's your first time visiting japow or a return trip, I would highly suggest checking out other mountains.

Wonderful spot for snowboarding and skiing for beginners and pro people. There are couple of courses to enjoy. The snow is so soft maybe which is often concern of beginners. Views are wonderful. I prefer the sky view. It’s so amazing.

The Madarao Mountain Resort is a quite big snow resort. It takes about 1 hour to get there from the downtown of Nagano city. There are various kind of slopes, flat and perfectly groomed slopes, steep and ungroomed ones, ski/snowboard park, and controlled natural forest areas for tree run. The resort offers a lot of fun for advanced skiers and borders, however to be honest it may not be the perfect place to bring beginners and kids. There is only a few slopes flat, wide and gentle for beginners. If you visit by car, car parks No.8 or No.7 are recommended. A deposit of JPY500 is required for a lift ticket, and the deposit can be refunded from the ticket office, if you park at the No.8. If you park at the No.7, you need to take the lift No.1 to get back to the car park No.7, you should NOT refund at the ticket office. The deposit can be refunded at the coffee shop in the No. 7.

Compared to the size of the area the off-piste is very good, and the attitude to off-piste some of the best in Japan. Most of the lifts are old, but rather than changing them out the should develop the system further, adding more north facing slopes and areas to the total. For off-piste this is one of the best places in Japan.

Amazing terrain for good powder days, steep tree runs look awesome. We were there in January and it wasn't very busy, hardly ever waited to get on a lift. Definitely worth a visit. You can buy a pass just for Madarao, or for a little extra include the lifts at Tangram too.

This was quite possibly one of the best ski trips I've ever had! I've been on mountains around the world, but between the polite staff, the in-house karaoke rooms, and the public Onsen, the resort amenities kept us entertained whether we were on or off the mountain. Since we're talking about the mountain, from here you have access to both sides and a huge range of trails from pretty easy to right in the trees. No black diamond here, but advanced trails are very good with the beginner hills being friendly for all ages. The rooms are plenty good for sleeping and recovery between everything else for a softer-than-normal Japan style bed. If you're a foodie, there's the above-average buffet as well as multiple restaurants in the resort. We really enjoyed the cafe for something quick. Finally, the staff, there was not so much as a sneer or side-eye from any of them regardless of the oddity of my family's requests. They were the most polite and professional staff we've ever encountered. I can't wait to take my family back.

Had the worst ski rental experience here. We wanted to pick up, as is usual everywhere, the evening before but they charged us an extra day which is crazy ( the lifts were already closed for that day). They were zero help in sizing for the kids. I paid for premium skis and was then presented with the worst selection I have ever seen. All the equipment was beat up and in bad shape. They even gave my wife broken bindings on her snowboard which we didn’t realise until we were the other side in Madarao and had to get a car to drive her all the way back over. If looking for anything above beginner level equipment I would avoid.

Lift passes are paper not scan, and the lift to the top opens around 10am. Take the top slope in the morning or it will get icy. Great speed run trails to the bottom.

Kurohime Kogen Snow Park is a ski resort that offers ski lifts, a ski school, and a kids' play area with snowmobiles. In the summertime, visitors can enjoy flowering meadows. The park has wide runs and enough space for skiers and boarders alike. It is also beginner-friendly with its wide and flat courses suitable even for children to enjoy snowmobiles. Additionally, they have intermediate level slopes but are limited in size.
I arrived at Kurohime Kogen Snow Park about an hour and a half before closing with hopes of fitting in a couple of runs at the end of the day. It was extremely easy to buy a lift pass, and for quite a reasonable price, as well (I payed ¥3,800 for a 3 hour pass). Though there were only a handful of runs to choose from, all of the ones that I tried were very enjoyable. They ranged in how challenging and long they were, but I was able to hit every course at least once in that span of two hours. While some might argue that there isn’t so much to do at this snow park, I thought the experience was more than satisfying enough for me. I thought all the runs were perfect in length (about 4-8 minutes each) surrounded by wonderful scenery. Not to mention, the slopes were nearly empty this time of year! All the lift staff were very friendly and generous, with one even allowing me to ride just as it was preparing to close. At the end of my runs, I stopped at the little restaurant at the bottom of the slopes for a refreshment, and the one lady working there on Christmas was very friendly, too. If you’re in the area, I definitely recommend making a stop at Kurohime Kogen Snow Park. Fantastic fun on the slopes, and the view from the top is worth the price of admission alone!

First time at a snow park with school age kids. We were not planning to do skiing but kids wanted some snow experience. Location is not far from the Nagano town and is good for day trip if you don't mind driving. The drove to ski park is relatively easy, better than expected. We spent about 3hrs at the family area park where the kids got to ride on a variety of snow mobile equipment. We took the ski lift to the top and slid down. Note that most instructions are in Japanese and we have to use google translate. The staff can't communicate in English too and hence need to use google translate too. This ski park seemed to cater more for locals as there were many elementary school kids on school excursion to the park. We rented 2 pairs of gloves as ours weren't warm enough..very pricey. Approx 2000yen per pair and they weren't warm either! Overall kids enjoyed the trip and it's inexpensive for the 3hrs use of ski family area
C T — Google review
The weather was really warm so it was perfect for sledding and building snowman but not so much for skiing. Nonetheless we had a lot of fun and the kids were entertained. The food is on the very expensive side but it was good and quick.
Wayne Y — Google review
We came here because they cater to dogs and even allow dogs to ride up one of the lifts and then run down the mountain! We enjoyed seeing the many dogs and friendly owners. The facilities are quite nice and the guests are primarily families with many more skiers than snowboarders. Unfortunately the old men running the lifts had bad attitudes and little concern for guests boarding or exiting the lifts. The old man inside the control room of the high speed quad was actually sleeping. Some chairs had exposed grass on the exit that could have easily been covered up. Other than when I boarded with my dog no one even held the chair as I got on. The lifts may as well have been unattended. Maybe it was just me, because I’m a foreigner or a snowboarder, but we will probably not return.

(Translated by Google) This soba restaurant is located at Kurohime Station. It's quite popular among locals and travelers who are familiar with the area, and the fragrant broth and flavorful soba noodles will warm you up. The reasonable prices are also great, as you'd expect from a soba restaurant. Apparently, there was a time when the restaurant was in danger of closing due to a lack of successors, but it seems to have recovered, which is good. Also, when I went back for the first time in a while, there was already a middle school student signing the autograph. I'm pretty sure the person inside is from Nagano. LOTTE ARAI RESORT is a premium mountainside retreat that has recently reopened after being closed for a decade. Nestled between Myoko and the coast, this legendary resort is renowned for its abundant snowfall, making it a haven for powder skiing enthusiasts. The resort offers refined rooms, impeccable service, and essential amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi and parking.
One of the best ski resorts in the world! Nice and large rooms with lots of variety available for different price points. Lots of lounges to relax and spend time with companions. Amazing public bath with natural onsen and outdoor bath. Staff were polite and very helpful. Restaurants can be improved upon with variety and quality...

We stayed as a group of 4 at Lotte Arai for 3 nights last weekend. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable but unfortunately the restaurant capacity does not adequately cope with the hotel guests. There was a queue at breakfast with many people waiting for a table at the buffet. We decided instead to get some breakfast at the bakery that had been temporarily opened and paid 4400 yen each. Unfortunately the food was limited and some items had run out and not been replaced. The coffee has also run out and only got refilled as we were leaving to go skiing. When we complained on checking out we were told “sorry” and not compensated for the inadequate breakfast. The cafe at the village station is not big enough to cope with the crowd and there were no seats inside the dining area. Restaurant bookings were hard to obtain in some of the restaurants. All in all a very poor dining experience for a five star resort. On the final night we were kept awake by a big group of guests in the corridor speaking loudly for about an hour at 1.30am. There was no response from management who would have clearly heard the noise in reception.

My wife and I had a great ski experience at Arai. We spent two days on the slopes and were blown away by the incredible Japan powder. For a short stay, the location was perfect. While there isn’t much to explore off the premises, the amenities were outstanding. One of my favorite moments was unwinding in the Cottage Lounge after a day of skiing, sipping a cocktail, and taking in the beautiful mountain view. The only downside was my experience at the rental shop. As someone who had never skied in powder before, I wasn't advised to rent powder skis, so I opted for all-mountain skis instead. While they were fine, given the deep powder conditions, I asked to swap them out after a few runs, especially since I had already paid for two days of rental. Unfortunately, I was told there would be an additional fee for the swap, which I felt should’ve been a simple exchange and was contrary to the exceptional service we experienced otherwise. On a positive note, the free shuttle to and from the train station was extremely convenient and easy to use (just make sure to make a reservation). Overall, it was a fun experience and I’d definitely recommend it.

I came here in the summer to check out the place as I know I'll be visiting in winter (plus prices are fab in summer!) it has so many activities to do, it's really great for kids. I'd say you can easily do 2 nights here with the activities + onsen. I didn't book restaurants beforehand and it was fully booked the night I stayed so we drove down to Myoko to have sushi dinner which turned out to be fantastic. I booked the characters room too as I grew up eating it as a snacks. I LOVED it. Everything was so cute.

Service is awful - 30 min on check-in in off season, seriously? Breakfast: empty plates and you have to tell them to refill several times before they actually do. And it is 1.5h before breakfast time finishes. The staff is blind or what!? Dinner: 6000 yen for Japanese Shabu Shabu and sukiyaki each - it is a joke🙈 4 pieces of small meat and a lot of onion😂😂 Don’t waste money for this hotel - better find smth smaller and cosier.

Steak house service & menu very good. Breakfast choice is very good. The family room was comfortable. Swimming pool pleasant but disappointed to have to pay extra to use it. Bar drinks are expensive and beware of the table charge that is added to the bill. Overall, it's a good hotel, but I feel it is overpriced.

Outdoor bath
Tsubame Onsen Kogane no Yu is a picturesque onsen nestled in a hillside forest, offering al fresco bathing pools heated by natural thermal springs. The onsen provides various options including indoor, outdoor, and natural onsens for visitors to unwind in Japan's renowned hot spring baths. The high sulfur content in the water serves as a natural disinfectant without the need for added chlorine. Additionally, it is one of the few onsens that allows entry to individuals with tattoos.
Free outdoor onsen! Clean with continuously flowing water. There's no shower/soap and only a small changing area. Lots of locals drive to the area just for this onsen. Nobody is watching so it's honesty basis on not peeking on the other gender's side. Women's side has an extra cover at the entrance, the men's side doesn't so their onsen is actually slightly visible from the outside.
Lost F — Google review
Excellent sulfur spring inside National Forest in front of Mt. Myoko. About 10 min walk from parking lot areas. Turn left after the bridge.
Max R — Google review
Absolutely gorgeous onsen. A little slippery when getting in so watch out. It is outdoor and free! I climbed up here with boots from our ryokan (only about.10 mins at most) in mid April. The other onsen was closed however due to snow.
Victoria V — Google review
An amazing place for an outdoor onzen - even without the snow. Warm rather than hot but an ideal temperature. Was slightly algae-y on the bottom so was a little slippery but just be careful. A small hut to change in but bring your own towel.
Mathew B — Google review
A beautiful place to soak in snow-covered surroundings. On the day we went the women’s bath had no hot water, so men and women took turns in the men’s bath. Be very careful of the walk up when the snow is melting.

Super nice free hot spring…amazing water…but slippery inside onsen…also they have changing place in front of bath…man and female separate…Friday 9:00-12:00 o’clock is cleaning time so you can not enter…
RYU T — Google review
This is an amazing onsen to bathe in nature, highly recommend. The water contains high sulfur content, which acts as a natural disinfectant... so no chlorine is added. I'm a heavily tattooed foreigner, and this is one of a few hotsprings that I was permitted to enjoy (as tattoos in 2023 are still heavily stigmatized in Japan, especially amongst the older generation).

Ho!!! It was really hot! But really fun. Reading previous messages, I guess they added protection for women bath, my wife got her privacy without problems. For men, it's not the same, shy person will be uncomfortable. My skin is still burning after 10min, I feel it really smooth :)

Kogakuro is a serene hot spring inn that offers simple yet comfortable rooms, complimentary breakfast, and access to a relaxing bathhouse and cozy lounge. The establishment prioritizes guest comfort by providing top-notch services and amenities, including free internet access and parking. Smoking is only allowed in designated areas, ensuring a smoke-free environment throughout the ryokan. Additionally, the attentive owner offers transportation to and from the station. Guests can also benefit from inclusive tickets for other hot springs in the area.
Excellent hotel. Great staff. So helpful in all matters. Breakfast just straightforward and easy. Highly recommend. It was a short walk to bus or lift base, which was the only negative but honestly, the walk means you have easy options to get on the bus to go to an alternative resort if the conditions don't suit you so a win anyway.
Mark S — Google review
The Kougakuru is a ryokan that has a blend of Japanese and Western. We stayed at the end of March so it was quieter. We opted for the Japanese styled room and we had a lovely view of the mountain. There are both western and Japanese dining halls with breakfast served daily in the western dining hall. Buffet spread is a combination of western and Japanese with a cook to order egg and bacon station. There is a very cosy lounge area with a fireplace and board games, reminiscent of common rooms at university. The onsen has both indoor and outdoor area and is open almost around the clock. The onsen waters are really quite good on the skin, and the temperature is quite bearable for a long soak although the outdoor onsen waters are on the colder side. Murayama san, the formidable proprietress herself, is fluent in English and her staff are mostly French or Vietnamese and able to converse in English as well. She is the star of the establishment exuding fiercely protective warmth of a mother. I do hope to return again very soon in the future.

We booked this place without any pre info and we can say that we scored! To start with we came to ski and it was the ideal base for the local Myoko region. Mieko our host was absolutely the best host always helping us even how tired she may of been bless her. We got access to cheaper deals around the mountains with both ski passes and transport. Mieko also sent us to the best places to eat for dinner….The rooms were also good, beds were good, onsen was great, breakfast was exceptional, location was perfect! We met many lovely guests also staying there. I would love to come back someday I hope I can!!
Rohan B — Google review
We booked this place at the recommendation of a friend, and we really lucked out. This place has been absolutely fantastic, and SO easy. Mieko is incredible - she organised literally everything for us: from a shuttle to/from the train station, provided all of the information on trains both to/from the airport (even before we had arrived), recommendations for places to eat and things to do, organising a shuttle service to a different ski mountain when the local shuttle ended (end of the season) - she can do it all! The hotel breakfast is fantastic, the staff are lovely and go out of their way to be helpful, the onsen is amazing, the bar area is super comfortable (and has games), and you get discounts at ski mountains and for other activities too. There was nothing not to love. I hope we can come back some day!
Nate F — Google review
This is a comfortable, clean and lovely place. Mieko, the proprietor, couldn’t do enough for us. She was so helpful with booking restaurants and getting us discounts everywhere. Breakfast was a highlight with friendly and welcoming staff. The Onsen was a great way to end a day on the slopes which you could walk to easily. Unforgettable! Highly recommended.

We had an amazing week at Kougakuro hotel in Akakura Onsen. The manager, Meiko, and her staff provided excellent service. So friendly and helpful for us newbies to Japan. The hotel is very well located to ski hire shop (Joey's) and many restaurants. If needed Meiko will arrange restaurant bookings. We had a double western room that was large, clean, very warm and comfortable. Down stairs bar, and lounge were great places to relax after a day skiing. Closest lift on Akakura Onsen field was only a few min walk and a free shuttle to Akakura Kanto was at end of the drive. Food was great and morning breakfasts were a highlight. I hope to be back again some day.
Peter M — Google review
Mieko, the proprietor, as well as the rest of her staff are absolutely awesome. They made us feel so welcome and were responsive to our requests. The rooms are simple and comfortable, well heated and clean.

Stayed for a 3 day weekend for a ski trip. Kogakuro is a family run hotel in the heart of Akakura onsen village with history over 100 years. The hotel is quaint and has a homey feel. The service is great; all staff are welcoming and willing to help you with anything. Location is great either with car or train. The hotel has parking but limited due to the massive snowfall they get. There is a free shuttle bus run by the ski slopes from Myoko-Kogen station. I recommend taking the train (if you're coming from Tokyo) as the Shinkansen trip to Nagano+the local train to Myoko-Kogen is not at all a hassle. Rooms were spacious (10jyo Japanese rooms) and clean. Futons were very warm. Hotel facilities include laundry rooms (which we didn't use), a small library/reading corner, a fire pit/lounge to grab your after ski beer. They have drying rooms for skis and another for boots/skiwear. Changing room/luggage room is available before and after checkout. It's a 5 minute walk to the closest lift which is very convenient. Ask the front desk for a lift pass discount if you haven't already! Food was great- local rice, Tofu specialties and home made nozawana were delicious. Don't forget to try the home made Jam for breakfast! Onsen has a very strong sulphur scent. the water is clear but with large amounts of deposits. Temperature tends to be high but it warms you up like no other after hitting the slopes. Definitely will go back, thank you so much for accommodating us!

This would be a difficult onsen to visit if you don’t know any Japanese at all, as there is no English support. However, my Japanese is not great and I managed. The vibe seems like a sento at first because everything is indoors and the space is a little small, but the water is really hot and direct from the hot spring. The cost for visitors is 400 yen. There is a “100 yen” option on the machine (you take a ticket and then give it to the person at the front) but that means “locals” which as far as I gathered meant “does the lady at the front know you by sight.” The locals are friendly. It was a really nice bath. They have bath soap but no shampoo or towels.

We travelled as a couple over the new years break and we had an absolutely fantastic time at Myoko House. There’s nothing we didn’t like - perfect communication before we arrived, great knowledge of local amenities, very comfortable and cozy accommodation, really delicious food… There’s a lot more. Akiko and Nathan were super helpful after our train travel got messed up due to the earthquake on 1 January, giving us helpful tips and booking alternative transport for us. Absolute 5 star and we hope to be back very soon!

Writing this a lot later than we visited. We hired the entire lodge and they were fantastic communication as we navigated many covid closures. We finally arrived in Jan 24 and hosts were amazing. They helped all aspects of our trip. The only thing we can suggest is that the lodge just is not suitable for smaller children due to step stairs. Accomodation was clean, well kept and warm. Food, easy access to ski resort and recommended restaurants did not disappoint. Thanks for having us.

We dined in 4 out of 5 nights as the food that Akiko prepares is absolutely delicious. The pick up and drop off to the train station and the drop off each morning to the ski resort of your choice is the icing on the cake. Thanks Nathan and Akiko for a great stay.

Myoko House is fantastic and I highly recommend it. The hosts Nathan and Akiko went above and beyond our expectations, and were so friendly and helpful! They went out of their way to cater to my dietary requirements and the home cooked food they served us was healthy and delicious. They provided us with great recommendations for the surrounding areas and helped us to get to and from the snow fields and trains. Plus, the accommodation was neat and highly functional, with a well maintained kitchen and cosy nook perfect for winding down in the evenings. We enjoyed every minute of our stay here and can't recommend it enough!

Had the pleasure of staying at Myoko House, great hospitality by Aki Nate and Nick. It is a little down the road from Akakura Kanko (not walkable) but the lodge does have its own shuttle service. I drove my own vehicle and there was ample parking available. Rooms were clean and comfortable, toilets were accessible and shower had hot water ready. Daily breakfast were good and got me well ready for the day on the slopes. Good recommendations by Nate as well for the ins and outs around Myoko Kogen.

Myoko house was a great spot to stay! The rooms were spacious and clean. Akiko's Gyoza hotpot was top notch, and when we just wanted to cook a simple dinner the shared kitchen was clean and had everything we needed. They gave great recommendations for places to go in the area and illuminated some of the subtleties of the Japanese culture for us before we went to the onsens.

Myoko house is the best! The layout was spacious and clean and our groups favorite hostel of our trip. Walkable distance to Akakura Onsen and close to the rest of Myoko resorts. Nathan and Akiko are great hosts and the breakfast and hot pots were on-point.
