Park
Izu Shaboten Zoo is a unique combination of botanical garden and zoo, featuring 1,500 different types of cactus and succulent plants from around the world. Visitors can learn about cactus cultivation and even take part in a cactus caring course. The zoo area is home to approximately 140 species of animals, including spider monkeys, parrots, and capybaras that roam freely and can be fed and petted by visitors.
maybe one of my favorite zoos! the amount if interaction you get with animals is awesome and many are able to roam freely in massive enclosed spaces that allow people to walk through. you can feed (and pet) capybaras! you can also feed deer, monkeys, sheep, alpacas, otters- almost every animal in the zoo can be fed by you for ¥200-¥300. There’s also a giraffe you can feed! I also believe you can get a discount if you buy tickets in advance, but I don’t think it’s necessary.

Great zoo size that we covered in about 4 hours with a 4 and 6 year old. Nice cactus greenhouses with an impressive collection of 100+ year old specimens. Animal enclosures didn't many intrusive barriers which allowed us to get nice and close. There were plenty of food stations to buy feed for practically all the animals too. This type of experience would be really expensive back in Australia. General admission was also reasonable too. Definitely recommended for a family outing if you're in the area 👌

Mixed feelings. Let the bigger animals have a bigger home‼️The park itself was better than expected, whole park took 2-3 hours. The staff was friendly & the small animals look reasonably well kept. I would give it 5 stars for the smaller animals but for the larger animals it was depressing!!There was a bear/cat animal that was in one of the indoors enclosure and it was 5 steps for the entire home. Totally messed up. Some of the apes looked depressed. It rained but they provided umbrellas at the entrance & it was totally fine in the rain. I hope more people can speak out about the small enclosures.

I visited Izu Shaboten Zoo by bike on Friday, and it was lively with many tourists and local schoolchildren. In the nocturnal animals’ area, I saw bats for the first time in my life, which was a memorable experience. The zoo has a spacious layout where animals move around freely, and of course the capybaras were a highlight. The best part was the cactus-picking activity, where you choose your own cactus and pot to create a unique arrangement to take home. Although the entrance fee felt a bit high, the experience and atmosphere made it worth it.

Mixed feelings about this zoo. Coming from Canada where most Zoo's have way more space than this, some of the enclosures felt pretty sad. We were originally going to go to the top of Mount Omoro but it was closed due to weather so we went to the zoo instead. Half of the zoo enclosures were absolutely tiny, and others were fairly large. For example the one with the penguins looked very small and dirty, and same with most of the indoor ones. The gorilla exhibit was also very sad and small. You could see some of the animals pacing around very fast in the small enclosures which is a sign of stress. The owls were also chained to the ground which felt very sad to see, at first I thought they were statues. You could also feed most animals, sometimes through tubes and you could see the animals just essentially begging for the food, although they looked well fed for the most part. Some cleaning and larger enclosures would make this way nicer. However we did absolutely love the capybara parts and being able to feed them. They are so funny! The bird exhibit was also quite cool.
Mitchell A — Google review
Animal welfare is definitely not even towards the top of the list here. Most of the enclosures were so very small and pretty barren, especially for mammals. The monkeys towards the entrance had only a concrete room painted to look like a sad jungle, with only a couple of trees and no enrichment items that I could see. The sloth had a tiny concrete room with a couple of sticks, like many of the other animals. All of the owls besides one were tethered to stands with very short ropes. Many animals that every other zoo I’ve been to had in enclosures, were somehow left in open areas with no fence. Kangaroos included. The “iconic” capybara onsen is literally a muddy concrete pool that they can jump into. It was very small per the number of animals. The Agouti enclosure smelled very strong of ammonia and it was behind glass minus a small opening that you could drop food into….the ammonia smell was that strong. Many animals were dirty looking and a couple paced in circles or just back and forth. All of the parrots looked to have almost half of one whole wing clipped to prevent them from flying. The animals that were free roaming just went wherever in an odd way - I’m not sure what even kept them in the zoo. My kids liked it because you could pet many of the animals but I wonder how many animals or people have been injured due to the closeness. The only redeeming factor, and the reason for two stars, was the plant areas. My son loved seeing the different cacti, and it’s cool how you could plant your own the bring home. Overall wouldn’t recommend and definitely wouldn’t come here again. We wouldn’t have visited if we would have known just how depressing this zoo is.

Good experience there. We bought our tickets on klook before we go. They are famous because of the cactus and their capibara(u can take close up picture with them). Tried their cactus ice cream too. There's quite few of activities u can do too
Tien H — Google review
The zoo has a lot of potential. Many of the animal habitats are spacious, there are interesting species, and you can have good interaction with some animals (especially the capybara who you can feed and seem very happy). Unfortunately I felt the conditions were very inhumane for many of the exhibits and it was sad, painful, and disappointing to see. For example, the gorilla exhibit was way too small for the animals and had very little to keep them engaged. The penguin habitat had basically nowhere for the birds to swim and was filthy. There were a lot of birds and owls in tiny cages or tied to branches in place that looked distressed. A huge binturong was in a habitat not much bigger than one square meter and could barely even fit in it lengthwise. Many animals were rapidly pacing back and forth in their tiny exhibits showing signs of distress. There were tons of primates in an indoor exhibits caged that could have used enclosures ten times bigger. It was bizarre because other animals had super open and spacious exhibits. Also, because you can feed almost all of the animals (most through tubes), they are attracted to the tubes. It just seemed unnatural and not healthy to be feeding certain animals in this way rather than in a regular manner. I would way rather see a zoo with fewer animals in more appropriate enclosures.

The Teddy Bear Museum is a must-visit spot if you're a fan of teddy bears and stuffed animals. The museum has a wide variety of bears, including some from as early as 1904, and exhibits on how these toys are made. It's usually not too crowded, making it an ideal place to spend some time alone or with friends.
Cutest museum ever! The place was super cute and cozy, the teddy bears were surprisingly very interesting and the Totoro exposition was perfect, they had a workshop where you can make your own teddy bear but you have to check the times before! I missed the workshop by 5 min 😭, but either way the expo was super fun to look at!
Daniela C — Google review
The museum is so cute, it has a good mix of actual history on teddy bears and then unique/cute ones. Some amazing displays as well and a build a bear style workshop. There is also a really good selection of Ghibli items and scenes. Plenty of photo opportunities and they have a great bakery with some really cool cookies and sweets. Unfortunately I didn’t get to their tea room in enough time to try anything but the menu looks good.

If you love teddy bears or plushies in general this is a great museum! There are many vintage and rare bears and the displays on the first floor are very detailed, interesting and cute! The top floor has a Totoro exhibition when I visited and there is also a workshop where you can make your own teddy bear. The highlight for me was seeing the vintage bears and also the garden cafe was very cute. You can have tea with a teddy and there’s also a small couch for a plushie you brought or bought to sit with you while you enjoy the cafe too!
Lana J — Google review
This was a delight, plenty of Toto for Ghibli fans, cute cafe where a teddy is sat waiting for you, pudding was delicious, brownie tiny but quite dark chocolate. Lots of photo oops too. If you want to build a Totoro check timings for the workshops, think there was 3 a day. There's two gifts shops, the first upstairs then down to the next one. Really good quality gifts, reasonably priced. Very pleasant way to spend a couple of hours on Izu, especially on a rainy day. Three teenagers all enjoyed it.

Book months in advance if you want to participate in the teddy bear making workshop! We took our chances and got lucky with a last second cancellation but I wouldn't count on that! The museum is cute and interesting!

a must go if you are into cute toys. it is cute that many people love teddy bears enough to make a museum for it. you get to see teddy bear exhibitions + a whole section for totoro. entry is 200yen cheaper if you present your mount omuro chairlift ticket to the cashier. there’s also a teddy bear making workshop but unfortunately i didn’t participate. there’s also a souvenir shop with various cartoon characters and a baked goods shop. i spent around 30-45 minutes here in total. a small museum but still very interesting and cute!

Fantastic little Muesum full of plushies much older than this little guy. Many of the Teddies have names and history which is quite fun to read. And the floor above is a fun little Ghibli plushie exhibit, great for fun photos. Lots of fun

We loved the gardens and the shop! You need to make a reservation to build your own Totoro, but that was a big highlight for our daughters. Well worth the price for a cousin stuffed toy.

Atagawa Tropical & Alligator Garden is a unique attraction that combines a botanical garden, zoo, and tropical greenhouse. It features over 140 alligators from 16 different species, as well as red pandas and other exotic animals. The garden boasts a variety of tropical plants including giant lotuses in the greenhouse. Visitors can also enjoy the nearby hot springs and ocean.
Tickets will get you access to all 3 garden locations. But this location is the only one you can buy tickets at. It has the largest gift shop, cafe, and the most alligators. The gators are huge and move slow. Might scare some children?
Kevin K — Google review
If you are westerner used to western zoo standards and animal welfare, this place will make you very sad. Crocodiles and manatee are in cramped enclosures and obviously not healthy. On the other hand, the greenhouses are truly beautiful, the staff is very friendly, and the snacks served at the café are fun and tasty.
Guillaume A — Google review
I expected an old, tacky zoo and thought the entrance fee of 1,800 yen was really expensive (can get a discount with JAF membership) but to my pleasant surprise, the place was quite big and well-kept. There were lots to see: alligators (a lot of them, some massive), red pandas, giant turtles, manatee, flamingoes, fish, and tropical plants were spread across 3 areas. They provide a shuttle bus service between the main area and the one with the red pandas. It wasn't crowded even on a Sunday so we could take our time to look at everything.
Therese W — Google review
Great work on numerous flowers and species of plants and bananas. But they seems in a way better condition than all alligators, unhappy in very small spaces. It does not respect their needs.

🌴 - Atagawa Tropical & Aligator Garden: Alligator zoo, tropical botanical garden and botanical fruit garden by using abundant heat of hot spring. 24 types, 200 alligators and crocodiles are kept in the alligator zoo. The botanical garden comprises the lotus greenhouse (giant lotus, etc), main greenhouse (hibiscus, orchid, etc) and annex greenhouse (pineapple, banana). 💵 - Price: * Adult - (1800 yen) | (13-64). * Children - (900 yen) | (4-12). 🕒 - Hours: [8:30 - 17:00] | (Entrance by 16:30).

You get to see many crocodiles there from all around the world. The park itself is divided into 3 different areas. Other highlights included the tropical plant areas and red pandas. Unfortunately the staff didn’t allow us to enter certain sections of the park 20mins before closing time and I was unable to see the giant water lily. Definitely don’t think the ticket is worth the price. Only go if you’re really into crocodiles or you are bored out of your mind while traveling around that area.

Umeya Diner in Izu-Atagawa offers a satisfying dining experience with its reasonably priced and high-quality sashimi set, which stands out as one of the best according to visitors. The fresh fish and tasty pork set have left diners thoroughly satisfied. Additionally, the diner is known for its delicious soba and friendly staff, making it a top choice in the area for a delightful meal.
For the price of 1200 yen, the sashimi set is probably one of the best I've ever had. The price was reasonable, comparing to Tokyo and Texas(where I live in currently) and yet the quality was really good. The fish was fresh and the pork set that my girlfriend ordered was very tasty too. All in all, a very satisfying meal when traveling to Izu-Atagawa

(Translated by Google) I never went in before because I thought they were catering to tourists, but I happened to stop by. Oh, it's delicious. And it's cheap! ️ I think the lemon sour was 400 yen, but I was surprised that it came in a large jug. It was late that day, so the seafood was sold out, so I decided to have a mushroom hamburger. This was delicious 😋 It was miso-grilled old pork, and it was soft and flavorful, so the rice seemed to go well. I only had a small amount, but it was delicious.

(Translated by Google) It is located just outside the mountain side exit of Izu-Atagawa Station. The exterior gives you a sense of history. There is a parking lot in front. ■Business hours etc. Visited around 2pm on a holiday. There is a list for waiting customers in front of the store. About 6 people waiting. About 8 people entered the store later. Perhaps because it was a public holiday, the last order was at 2:30 p.m. and the restaurant was open until 3:00 p.m., unlike Google's information. It may close earlier during low tourist seasons or on weekdays. About 20 minutes after I started waiting, I was guided into the store. ■In-store order There are table seats and tatami seats, I think it's best if 4 people sit at each table. The staff will bring you water and take your order. I ordered a highball (400 yen), Mr. Shio-yaki (300 yen), and a sukimi tuna and horse mackerel tataki set meal (1300 yen). Please note that it may take some time from ordering to receiving your order as it is fully booked. Alcohol arrived early. The food will probably arrive in about 20 minutes. ■Salt-grilled by the chef ★×4 The skin is grilled crispy and has a nice salty taste, making it a great snack to go with alcohol. It was a white fish, but it was delicious. The skin and eyeballs were also delicious. ■Sukimi tuna and seared horse mackerel set meal ★×5 A set of seared horse mackerel, sukimi tuna, rice, miso soup, small side dish, and pickles. Considering that it is a tourist destination, the prices are reasonable and very good value for money. The tataki horse mackerel is topped with shredded ginger and chopped green onions, which add a nice accent and make it a delicious dish. I think the freshness of the horse mackerel itself is also good. I wanted to eat a little more. The tuna sukimi is topped with chopped seaweed. It was also fresh and delicious. Wasabi is the type that really hits your nose. The miso soup had a nice flavor and I liked it. Small bowls are normal. When it comes to pickled cucumbers, people's tastes seem to be clearly divided. I wasn't very good. ■Highball ★×4 The ice is fine. It was a delicious highball with just the right amount of carbonation. The small bowl of wild vegetables was also delicious. ■Summary It was an excellent restaurant that served fresh seafood at a reasonable price. It's only open during lunch, but I highly recommend it.

(Translated by Google) The interior of the restaurant has a retro atmosphere, exuding the comfort that people looking for when they drop in on a trip. The horse mackerel sashimi we had was translucent and fresh, with firm, springy flesh. It came in two varieties: namero-style and thinly sliced, allowing us to enjoy the different textures and flavors. Small side dishes, pickles, and miso soup are also available, making this a very satisfying set meal that lets you enjoy the bounty of the sea. Be sure to stop by before visiting Banana Crocodile Park!

(Translated by Google) 2025.6 It is located in front of Izu Atagawa Station, and there is a parking lot in front of the store. I visited on a weekday at lunchtime, there were no customers before me, and two groups of five customers after me. The exterior looks like a rundown country restaurant, so it is selective about who enters. The interior is also an old-fashioned restaurant. I ordered it after hearing the staff say, "We have barracuda in today, so we can serve you grilled barracuda with salt." To be honest, I was worried because barracuda is somewhere in the middle of the pack in my ranking. It wasn't bad, but it was a protein-rich fish with a bland impression. After a short wait, the grilled barracuda set meal (1,300 yen) arrived. There were two fish! Come to think of it, there were also two horse mackerel in the photo of the grilled horse mackerel on the menu. Barracuda is still a protein, but it was salted and grilled to the perfect degree. The belly meat was fatty and cleanly removed, but it was delicious with a slight flavor of the pith! It would be even better if they had grated daikon radish. The accompanying vinegared daikon radish dish was also delicious. At another table, someone who ordered a sashimi set meal exclaimed in surprise, "There are 12 slices! What a huge portion!"

The main dish was sashimi, but I was intrigued by the grilled fish. Apparently they always have amberjack, so I decided on the grilled yellowtail fish set meal since I heard they can't serve it unless it's in stock. I was torn between Kama and skirt steak, but I chose skirt steak, which I have never eaten before. Wow, it was so fatty and delicious. Salted plum with a good amount of salt. The small side dish (I couldn't really tell what was inside) was delicious, and in addition to the fish dishes, they also had things like tea soba (zaru soba), so it's a restaurant that makes you want to come back again. We had an amazing stay here! They have such a good eye for service. They are super kind and welcoming. Such a nice break after a couple of days in Tokyo! The food courses are amazing and such a nice way to taste and learn about local food. The Onsens are very hot but very relaxing and nice to be in! And the area around the stay is so calming. Only - is that you have to use the showers in the Onsen’s but it went well anyways! Would recomment the hiking trail along the coast. Super nice. Also has a few fishing spots along the route!

The location is very close to the coast that allows you to visit the local trails. Such a relaxing place, can't wait to go back!

Our friends recommended Hanafubuki to us, saying they were amazed by it — and now I understand why. I expected a nice traditional ryokan, but it turned out to be a paradise on earth. Everything was impeccable: 9 different private onsen, spacious Japanese-style rooms, and incredible meals. The staff were the kindest and most attentive — they truly do everything to make your stay perfect. The service is outstanding! The location is magnificent, surrounded only by nature and other ryokan: pure peace and relaxation. Check-in begins with a tea ceremony and a touch of aroma oil, followed by a full guided tour of the property. All the onsen are open 24/7, making it wonderfully romantic to visit them at night. The traditional dinner and breakfast completely blew my mind — it was easily Michelin level. I attach a pic of our breakfast.

Unbelievably tranquil and wonderful service. The hot springs were amazing to enjoy and trying the traditional food was lovely. The rooms were more like a small traditional villa spread over the grounds and the springs are very private and open 24/7 though some are under rooms so be mindful of others above you when it comes to noise. Very relaxing. There is so much nature around and some lovely sights to see like the coast and water falls. Be advised the coastal walk is not for the faint of heart and more like a nature hike. Also, if you are prone to mosquito bites like me I'd take precautions as I was bitten quite a lot. We saw many animals and insects so if you are into that this was a great location for it. Very, very good place to stay to refresh even if for one night.

This ryokan is much nicer than the on-line photos and even their own website would suggest. As soon as you walk through the gate you enter a tranquil forest retreat and all thoughts of the world outside melt away. Attentive staff and excellent service. Superb, gourmet food beautifully presented. Wonderful onsen offering indoor and outdoor options. Very clean and private. Plus, great location to hike the Jogasaki Nature Study Course which offers spectacular scenery.

Restaurant
Restaurant Isobe is a charming local eatery located near the seaside, making it a perfect stop during a day trip. The friendly and welcoming staff add to the warm atmosphere of this authentic place, where fresh seafood dishes are the highlight. Visitors can enjoy specialties like Keisondon, a rice bowl topped with fish, as well as salmon roe and crab topping bowls. Despite not having an English menu, the restaurant provides picture menus for easy selection.
An authentic local place with very fresh seafood. (Keisondon: Rice bowl topped with fish). We went right when they opened at 10 and tried the salmon roe and crab topping bowl. They don’t have English menu, but have pics, so easy to choose.

Wonderful food and really lovely and welcoming people. Since that we decided to take our day-trip by walking along the seaside, we were blocked by the tunnel and found ourselves in front of this beautiful local restaurant. One of the chefs even helped us to get through the tunnel by giving us a lift. We felt warmth through our heart. I would definitely go back around town and this restaurant will be a must-stop-by place for us.

(Translated by Google) Izu Isobe is a wonderful seafood restaurant where you can enjoy fresh seafood. The restaurant has a relaxing atmosphere, and being able to dine while looking out at the sea is also appealing. In particular, the freshly caught local sashimi and seafood bowls were superb, allowing you to fully enjoy the quality of the ingredients. The grilled and boiled fish were also very tasty, and it was clear that they had all been carefully prepared. The staff were also kind, and we were grateful for their attentive service. The prices were reasonable, and we felt that the value for money was good. We would definitely like to visit again when we visit Izu. This is a recommended restaurant where you can enjoy seafood to your heart's content. We always have the grilled squid, and it is really delicious. (Translated by Google) I found this restaurant while looking for a seafood restaurant in Izu Inatori. It's located a bit far from the station, so you'll need to access it by car. I recommend the horse mackerel bowl, piled high with horse mackerel; its fresh, plump texture is irresistible for horse mackerel lovers. The sashimi set meal is also great, with great ingredients like tuna and sea bream. You can also dine inside the restaurant, which has a great view overlooking the ocean. The old-fashioned atmosphere of the restaurant is one of the highlights of traveling. Set meals start from 2,000 yen, so it can be a bit pricey for families, but it's worth it if you're looking for delicious seafood. Waterfalls
Joren Falls is a captivating block waterfall located along the Kano River, boasting a 25-meter drop into a serene pool. This natural wonder is steeped in folklore and has been designated as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. The surrounding area offers diverse sightseeing opportunities, including the unique terrain of the Geopark, featuring attractions such as Mt.
Nice waterfall right next to a parking lot. You need to walk a little bit and there are a bunch of steps to take. At the bottom of the falls theres a Wasabi farm which is cool to see. You can also rent angling gear and try to catch some fish.
Matthijs — Google review
One of the most beautiful waterfall sites anywhere on the world. Surrounded by wasabi fields. Plenty of of parking space. Short hike. Interesting shops selling wasabi and rainbow trouts. Very accessible for those travelling with kids. Not packed with people so you can still get a serene atmosphere at the waterfall. Great drive to the location is a plus
Rizal P — Google review
Wow this place is a total GEM and must visit. Not only for the waterfall but to see how Wasabi is made! Try the wasabi ice cream at the end (glad I tried but wouldn't again). This place was a highlight for me fromt he view and all. Go and visit!
Min P — Google review
Beautiful, but too touristy. Can't access the river unless you pay for fishing, which is disappointing. Would have been amazing to sit down on a rock and dip feet in the stream. For those who excuse fencing off the falls by claiming protection of environment from tourists - there are hundreds more waterfalls all over Japan that are open but just as clean, so no made up excuses are necessary.

Go to Izu_Hanto but not stopping by Joren Falls then it is not completely yet. Story of famous Izu dancers by Kawabata, it is here, this location is within the story, the young student with a young girl encounter through out their trips. Parking is large free, right by the way down to Jorell falls is status of the beautiful two famous innocent, light hearts romance standing. The water falls down by 200 more steps but in well maintained and well cared for every one. Down to the falls you will feel the strong of water running and clean air fresh air. Small shop for wasabi, ice cream and sign up if you want to go fishing there. It is one of the main stops in Izu peninsula if you are interested in the beautiful izu Hanto. Going up after visiting the falls then coffee shop Idoriko's coffee shop. Name from the old train used to run at this side. Gifts shops is also carrying many products, fresh wasabi 's available to purchase if you like. This place is good stop and easy to all. We loved to be here. Thank you

The photos don't do it justice, it was more spectacular than I thought, especially in the rain. The surprising bonus was the small wasabi farm also in the gorge, so you can see the waterfall and get your wasabi hit (including buying fresh wasabi) in the same place. There are about 200 steps and no wheelchair accessibility. No toilets in the gorge either.
Douglas A — Google review
Nice, cold, easy to reach. Try the wasabi cashews sold down at the waterfall!

Hiking area
Old Amagi Tunnel North Side is a popular spot known for its connection to the novel Dancer of Izu. Visitors are drawn to the small light at the end of the dark tunnel, creating an irresistible allure. The road leading to the tunnel from the north is in poor condition, but still accessible by car. Despite rough terrain and potential bear disturbances, many hikers frequent this area on weekends.
So cool! But be aware the road is bumpy to get out there.

Hosono Plateau

Hiking area
Inatoki Hosono Kogen, a vast plateau with stunning views of the Izu Islands, is particularly popular during the autumn when its silver grass fields are in full bloom. The area offers various hiking courses of different durations, with the 140-minute route providing exceptional panoramic vistas. Visitors should be prepared for narrow and steep roads leading to the plateau. During the autumn Susuki event, a kitchen truck is available on-site.
I love to visit this place as often as possible. It's like nowhere else in the area. It reminds me of parts of Ireland or Scotland even. A very special place to escape to.

The road to reach the plateau park and the roads in the park are narrow. I visited during Golden Week and driving was a night far. too many cars. I recommend leaving before dark if you are not used to winding mountain roads. This place is insanely beautiful; there are many hikes. A must is reaching the Mount Misujiyama summit. From there, there’s an incredible view of the Izu Archipelago. During spring and summer, the rolling hills are a lush green color. In the spring, visitors can go wild vegetable picking on the plateau, and you might encounter a 500 yen entrance fee.

Izu Animal Kingdom is a unique African savanna-themed park located in Izu Inatori, offering visitors the chance to interact with animals and enjoy walking safaris amid giraffes, zebras, and other herbivores roaming freely. Divided into three zones - Animal Zone, Play Zone, and Sports Zone - the park features attractions like a petting zoo, Ferris wheel, go-carts, and a dinosaur-inhabited forest.
The villa I stayed in had a giant ferris wheel up on a mountain nearby. I was very curious and upon asking the hotel staff said was part of the Izu animal kingdom. With just a 5 min walk to arrive, I felt compelled to go and see what I could find. In the zoo, I was greeted many fun animals. There was a large open area where many different animals lazed about. Giraffes were walking by and asking for food. The zebra and bison were off enjoying the sun. As I walked around, I found lots of other fun enclosures like a hare, cappybara and alpaca enclosure; a birds enclosure, and a small little animal petting enclosure. The parrots in the cappybara enclosure enjoyed a good laugh when I accidently dropped my veggies for the cappybaras into the water. Lastly, as I headed down the route back to the entrance, I was greeted to a small little theme park with many a rides to play on. A very fun park to spend the day in.
Stash P — Google review
I found this zoo visit to be extremely disappointing. It appears the animals are not well-fed—many of them approached visitors as if expecting food. At each enclosure, there was only a tiny portion of food available for purchase at 200–300 yen. The zoo has very few animal exhibits overall, and the entry ticket is quite expensive. They also don’t inform you at the entrance that major animals like elephants and bears are no longer in the zoo. The chimpanzee was kept in a very small, stressful-looking cage, which was upsetting to see. Overall, it felt like a complete waste of time and money. I strongly recommend visiting a public zoo instead—they usually offer larger, better-maintained spaces with a greater variety of animals.
Noor A — Google review
An absolutely delightful zoo with amusement park attractions as well as a driving range and much more! As far as the animal attractions there’s a lot of interactive elements. You can feed a great many of the animals to include the more pedestrian options such as the capybara, giraffes, zebras, & more. Then there’s the more exciting options for feeding which is the white tiger, the bear, and the baboons. You’ll also find plenty of food and drink options throughout the park with both on the move options as well as a restaurant. A place to take the family and loose yourselves for the day in the environment that is the Animal Kingdom.

One of the saddest places I’ve ever been. I visited Animal Kingdom Japan while traveling with my family — I don’t like zoos, but my 3-year-old really wanted to see animals, so we went. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a deeply upsetting experience for all of us. Many animals were kept in small, barren enclosures and looked either sedated, sick, or extremely stressed. Several had visible skin problems and appeared unwell. It was hard to watch. Even my child, who was so excited to go, ended up feeling sad and confused.
Angela — Google review
Nice place. Tigers are white and you can feed them for an extra 500 yen. Lots of animals, from rabbits to elephants, owls to capybara. Appears that COVID lockdowns have had quite a big impact on the playground area and activities, don't think it was just a quiet Monday afternoon. High on a hill, not a place to easily walk to from the station, recommend car, taxi or bus to get there.
Paul S — Google review
I dislike zoos at the best of times, this was no exception. Cramped concrete enclosures are not suitable places for wild animals. As a result many of the animals here looked depressed, lonely and mentally challenged. Japan continues to disappoint with its lack of animal welfare and this place is not helping that image. Avoid if you find animals in distress a depressing sight.

Izu Animal Kingdom is a family-friendly wildlife park in Higashiizu, Shizuoka Prefecture, offering an immersive experience with a variety of animals and interactive exhibits. The park features a walking safari where visitors can observe giraffes, zebras, and rhinoceroses in a savannah-like setting. Additionally, the Animal Touch Square allows guests to pet and feed small animals such as capybaras, guinea pigs, and armadillos. For those seeking more excitement, the park offers feeding experiences with white tigers, bears, and baboons for an additional fee. Amusement park attractions, including a Ferris wheel and merry-go-round, add to the fun. The park is open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM (last admission at 4:00 PM) and is closed during inspections in late June and mid-December. Admission is ¥2,200 for adults and ¥1,100 for children aged 4 to junior high school students. Visitors can reach the park by a 10-minute bus ride from Izu-Inatori Station.

An amazing local spot off the side of the road that is a must stop while in the area. While passing through on the way home from the zoo we decided to pop in for lunch and upon entry was greeted with a delicious smell and enveloped by a most inviting atmosphere. The food, all reasonably priced, beyond surpassed my already high expectations from the smell. The service was impeccable, the two person crew fielded our order for five as well as a nearly full dining room. Upon completion of the meal the lady working there exchanged pleasantries with us, gave a small trinket to my daughter even got a hug out of her too. In all I feel one would be doing themselves a disservice to skip such a wonderful small local restaurant. Cannot recommend enough and can hardly wait for another excuse to visit.

With convenient parking and friendly staff, it's highly recommended for those seeking an authentic and satisfying sushi experience.
We had an amazing time at Uohachi Sushi! We got the kinmedai sushi (their specialty) and premium selection sushi, and it was outstanding. The fish comes from the market across the street and could not be fresher! It also came with a delicious miso fish soup and matcha tea. The staff were very kind and helped us choose what to order, making it a perfect experience.

A little pricey, but the quality of the food is top notch. A good place to get a sampling of the breadth of Kinmedai dishes. The 金目鯛煮付け is a must-order.

We traveled up the coast from Shimoda and had stopped at two other sushi restaurants that were all closed. Luckily Uohachi was open and easily findable via Google maps. The service was very intimate and the food was outstanding. The staff took great care of us. We had some amazing oysters, fish soup, sashimi and another specialty fish.

Legit quality. Good prices. Set menu is awesome and most of the fish is from the harbor market across the street. Small venue and no reservations but make sure to try it. You won't be disappointed.

The food was warm (they didnt cool it) and the fish cut way to big. The taste was good, but the temperature ruined it in my opinion
Xarni — Google review
Perhaps the unfriendliest and least polite service I've had in 6 years living in Japan. Dead atmosphere. Sushi was average and overpriced. I can only imagine this restaurant received good reviews due to being perhaps the best one in a local town without much choice.

Restaurant
(Translated by Google) Located near Inatori Station, (name) Maruto Suisan is a fish store and dining room. With its first floor dedicated to selling fish and the second floor serving as a cozy dining area, this establishment offers an array of delectable dishes. The Omakase Don, priced at 1500 yen, provides great value for money with its generous selection of sunfish sashimi, sea bream, horse mackerel, squid, and more.
This restaurant is useful for travelers who use Izu Inatori Station. You can eat the kinnmedai fish cheaper than that of Inari Port. As it is a fish shop on Google Map, I want Google to change the restaurant as landmarks because it is hard to find in advance.

(Translated by Google) Visited during lunch time. Go up to 2F. There seems to be table seats and a tatami room in the back. I ordered the omakase bowl and sashimi set meal. The sashimi in both cases is the same. The only difference is that the squid doesn't come with salted fish when served in a bowl, and I just want to see if it's served on top of rice or on a plate. The price for both is 1,650 yen including tax, which is reasonable. The elderly person sitting at the counter seemed to be hard of hearing. My mother is also elderly and hard of hearing, so she wears hearing aids. It's an intrusion, but I think it's necessary if you're serving customers. Therefore, the star was minus 1.

A cute older lady showed me to my seat, and I was able to order right away. All the fish was fresh and delicious, and I was happy that it came with fish soup and salted fish. I thought it was amazing that I could eat here for such a low price, considering the high prices in tourist areas. I'd love to visit again if I visit Inatori again. (Translated by Google) I ate the omakase seafood bowl and miso pickled red sea bream. Since it was a rush to enter the store, we were informed that the simmered and grilled dishes might take about 20 minutes. Still, I didn't notice the time as I was relaxing while looking at the scenery! Miso pickles are delicious! The exquisite amount of miso and the soft golden sea bream were delicious, and the pieces were large. The seafood bowl and the amount of rice were just right, and the white fish was the main ingredient, making it refreshing! It had shrimp and was delicious. There was a side of soup on both sides, which was also delicious. Water is self-service and the restaurant is on the second floor. Dried fish and salted fish are sold as souvenirs on the first floor. I was worried about taking the delicious salted fish I had seen in the reviews back to Tokyo, but since they had it frozen, I put it in the insulated bag I had brought with me and took it home! Zoo
Outdoor Activities
iZoo, located in Kawazu Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a large indoor/outdoor zoo that specializes in reptiles and amphibians. The facility houses a variety of these creatures including iguanas, lizards, turtles and snakes. Visitors can also see an endangered Galapagos giant tortoise at iZoo. In addition to the exhibits, the zoo features a café and gift shop for visitors to enjoy.
Went on weekend ! We could take picture with a long snake and see crocodile being hand fed ! It was quite a show! Also there is a space with big turtles walking free so you gotta be careful where you walk ;) The parc itself overall is old but it didn’t stop the fun going !
Fefe — Google review
We were there on a rainy / Taifun day with a lot of Asian people with the same idea. But this was not the problem, why I only give one star! In the Zoo were a lot of animals with much more need on space than they get. The Japanese crane couple with their child had maximum 7-8 qm space. So proud and beautiful animals. But it’s get worse and worse. You can feed (for a fee of 200 Yen) land turtles, which „live“ on the floor every customer is walking on and it’s dark the hole day. When you enter the place, there were two turtles starring and not moving. They look so sad. The other turtles run to the customers for the food, so I had in my mind that they don‘t get enough food from the staff. But the worst thing I ever saw was, that you can sit or ride on a big land turtle (for a fee of 1.000 Yen). Image getting over 100 years old and a child is riding on your back. The turtles were not allowed to go in their outside space, but two really big ones tried really hard to open the door and the male staff guy pushed them - on a not good looking way - through the compound. After that the next customers came in for the ride and the photo of it. This opportunity was often used by Asian families and I was so upset about that. I‘m happy that kind of zoo is prohibited in Germany!

What an amazing find! We chanced upon this place and we had a ball of a time ! We liked that we could carry the reptiles . We also enjoyed the giant tortoises - and paid 1000yen to feed them - they roam freely around us ! You won’t regret coming here !!

My son and I enjoyed the iZoo very much. This place is much bigger than it appears from the entrance. We saw reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, insects & bugs, and an assortment of other great animals. Limited English display but scientific Latin names are displayed so we could Google. Great place to enjoy a few hours of learning fun!

The park known as Kawazu Bagatelle Park boasts a beautiful French-inspired garden that showcases an impressive collection of over 1,100 different types of roses. Along with the stunning floral displays, visitors can also enjoy the on-site shop and cafe. This well-maintained park is a must-visit destination for any nature lover or admirer of elegant gardens.
(Translated by Google) During rose season, the garden is filled with tourists, enthusiasts, and photographers alike, eager to see the beautiful and abundant variety of roses in full bloom. In addition, strolling through the garden captivates visitors with the diverse scents of roses, from sweet and vibrant to fruity. This rose garden is a sister garden of France's Bagatelle Rose Garden, and its architecture and other features evoke a French charm. The best time to see the flowers is from mid-May to late June in spring and mid-October to mid-November in autumn, with grand rose festivals held in both seasons. The garden also houses a stylish restaurant/café that's sure to appeal to women, offering a menu unique to the rose garden. I also went to an Italian restaurant with a fellow photographer (lol). Of course, it was delicious... Since you're here, you'll want to do more than just look; you'll also want to fill your stomach with delicious food. It's a great place to stop by during your trip to Izu. Highly recommended. When you go out... If you're driving... there's free parking available with space for approximately 200 cars, including large buses. If you're using public transportation... get off at Kawazu Station on the Izu Kyuko Line and take a bus or taxi, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Please do! Thank you for reading to the end. There are only a few photos, but I'd be happy if you took a look. In the basement, which you can enter by paying 200 yen, there is a large column called a prayer wheel with a sutra written on it. It is said that if you turn it vigorously to the right and stop it with your hand, you can get the same effect as reading a sutra, which is very convenient and valuable. Similarly, some prayer wheels had zodiac signs drawn on them, and you could tell your fortune by turning them and seeing where they stopped. McDonald's is a well-established and popular fast-food chain renowned for its hamburgers and fries. The store's interior appears to have undergone recent renovations, enhancing its overall appeal. Unfortunately, McShakes and breakfast items are not available, although the staff provides excellent service. It is possibly the only place in Inatori that offers complimentary Wi-Fi, making it a convenient choice for many visitors.

This McDonald's is a huge step up from any in the US. The samurai burger is incredible and would recommend for any tourists. It features bacon, egg and teriyaki on a big Mac and is easily the best tasting burger I've ever had. It's also extremely cheap and a meal which would normally cost ~$30 in the US cost just $17 here. There is no play place like in the US.

Located near Izu-Inatori Station, Hotei is a charming soba restaurant run by a friendly elderly couple. Despite the language barrier, they make an effort to engage with customers and ensure a pleasant dining experience. The menu offers various options, including the highly recommended Tenzaru Soba priced at 900 yen. The aroma of the curry dishes from neighboring tables adds to the overall appeal of this hidden gem.
Helmed by an old, friendly couple. They tried to strike up a conversation with me even though I don't speak Japanese. The food sample photo is to show what I ordered cos I don't know what it is called. It was udon soup with grilled mochi! The soup warmed my soul and the mochi was so chewy and fun to eat. Very carbs heavy. Maybe the old lady gave me more after I told her I walked there. What a surprised find. The curry from other tables smell good too!

The mountain hosts the traditional Yamayaki festival on the second Sunday of February to preserve its natural beauty and has become a popular springtime tradition attracting many tourists. It was beautiful even though we visited at the beginning of summer on a windy day. The chair lift costs 1,000 yen round trip, be sure to check the official website beforehand in case it’s not operating due to wind or other conditions. An amazing view from and at the top. Just that on the day of our visit the winds were too strong and it was extremely cold up there. Do brace yourself abit if you were visiting there while strong winds were blowing, as it be quite challenging to walk around the mountain and the experience can be quite terrifying (the feeling of your were about to be blown away by the wind from the top of the mountain🤣). We were quite lucky to be able to get the lift up before the service was totally cancelled for the rest of the day due to the strong winds.

I came at 11 a.m. on August 15, 2025. I had to wait in line for about 1.5 hours for the chairlift, and it was incredibly hot with strong sun. Be sure to prepare for the long wait by bringing a hat, water, and a UV protection umbrella. Once you're up there, the weather is clear, and the mountain is beautiful. This is a beautiful mountain(that is pretty small) where, on the top of the mountain, Mt.Fuji is clearly visible. There is a shooting range(bow and arrow) in the crater(with a lot of greenery) and a climbing chairlift from which you can reach the top of the mountain from the bottom. There is also an ice cream shop on the top of the mountain with a small seating area. I do not think it is possible to hike this mountain as it is very steep.

Today was mountain climbing day! And what better mountain to traverse than the mountain that was featured in the anime 'Your Name" Mount Omuro is a very large and fun Mountain filled with lots of great views and places to walk. A full 1 hour walk around and see as far as the sky will allow you. It was a very enjoyable hike which was started and capped with a fun ride on the Rope way. A very popular destination as when leaving, the line had tripled in size! I recommend going early just as the Mount opens to avoid the 1hr wait time some have observed before.

Mt. Omuro (大室山) is a spectacular, extinct volcano in Shizuoka with panoramic views, a crater you can walk around, and fun attractions like archery, gift shops, and tasty snacks. Chairlifts provide access to the summit—just check wind conditions before visiting! At only ¥1000 for the ride, this is one of the best-value scenic spots in Japan. (5/5) Full Review Mt. Omuro: A Volcanic Gem with Views, Value, and a Bit of Wildlife Drama Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5) Few attractions strike the perfect balance between value, beauty, and unique experience quite like Mt. Omuro (大室山) in the Izu Peninsula. This extinct volcano, with its near-perfect symmetry and grass-covered slopes, isn’t just a geological wonder—it's a fully packaged experience, offering unbeatable vistas, delightful snacks, and a slice of adventure with just the right dash of whimsy. Let’s start with a practical note: weather matters. We had to visit twice—on our first attempt, strong winds meant the scenic chairlifts (gondola-style lifts) were grounded. Disappointing, sure, but entirely understandable given the exposed nature of the summit. So here’s my advice: check the wind forecast, and shoot for a clear-skied day to boost your chances of spotting the elusive Mount Fuji on the horizon. When we finally made it up on day two, the experience was well worth the wait. For only ¥1000 per person, the chairlift glides you gently to the top, revealing sweeping views of Ito City, the Pacific Ocean, and rolling hills in every direction. The crater itself is walkable—a 360-degree rim trail that's flat, easy, and endlessly photogenic. And inside the bowl-like crater? A surprising twist: an archery range. Yes, you can channel your inner samurai while literally standing in a volcano. At the base of Mt. Omuro, there’s even a zoo (Izu Shaboten Zoo) and additional attractions to round out your day trip. But the summit is where the real magic happens. I was pleasantly surprised by the gift shops and cafes, which didn’t fall into the usual overpriced tourist trap formula. In fact, Mt. Omuro was running a Yuru Camp collaboration while we were there—a brilliant marketing crossover that gets bonus points in my book. As for the food, it was shockingly good for a mountaintop rest stop. Highlights included: Hokkaido milk ice cream: ultra-creamy, with a beautifully crisp cone. Miso-dipped mochi dango: savory, warm, and satisfyingly chewy. Fluffy meat bun: solid comfort food. Yakisoba: a classic Japanese staple, well-executed. Churrito (mini churro): sweet, crunchy, and worth every yen—until a hawk tried to steal it. Yes, you read that right. A hawk or falcon, clearly a local of the area, launched a bold attempt to snatch my snack. I managed to defend my churrito (barely), but another guest nearby wasn’t as lucky. While the bird doesn’t seem to pose any direct threat to people, it’s laser-focused on open food. It's a minor inconvenience that honestly added a bit of National Geographic excitement to the day. Nature finds a way… to swipe your sweets. In conclusion, Mt. Omuro is a hidden treasure—a destination that blends nature, culture, and lighthearted fun into an affordable, worthwhile visit. Between the panoramic views, quirky attractions, and delicious eats, this is an experience I would happily recommend to tourists and locals alike. Just watch your snacks.

Some, like Lake Ippeki (一碧湖), offer a softer appeal—a whisper rather than a shout. Tucked away in the Izu Peninsula, this lake exudes a quiet serenity that locals no doubt treasure. For travelers who enjoy wandering through lesser-known corners of Japan, this location might serve as a pleasant interlude. But for most tourists, especially those navigating a tight itinerary, this may not be a worthwhile stop. There are a few charming touches: the ability to take a small boat onto the lake to reach a tiny island, for instance, does offer a touch of novelty. The forest trail that rings the lake provides a shaded, tranquil setting for a contemplative walk or picnic. In the right season—perhaps a crisp autumn afternoon or early spring morning—it could very well feel like a peaceful escape from the crowds. But the key word here is could. For the average tourist, especially those looking to maximize their time and experience, Lake Ippeki simply doesn’t stand out. The views, while pretty, lack the grandeur of more dramatic lake destinations like Kawaguchiko or Ashi. The facilities are minimal, the signage isn’t particularly tourist-friendly, and unless you’re armed with a car and a leisurely attitude, getting here can feel more like a detour than a discovery. That said, I don’t mean to diminish its worth entirely. For residents of the Izu area or frequent travelers to Japan looking for something quiet, off the beaten path, this could be a delightful spot to recharge. Sometimes, a place doesn’t need to be thrilling—it just needs to be still. Lake Ippeki offers stillness in spades. But for those weighing opportunity costs—the time, transport, effort—it’s difficult to recommend this site above other regional highlights. It’s a place that asks for time, and gives you calm in return. If that’s your travel style, you might find value here. Otherwise, I’d suggest allocating your hours elsewhere. Verdict: Lake Ippeki is a local gem, not a tourist must-see. Peaceful and lightly photogenic, it works well for those with time to spare—but may leave others wondering what else they could’ve done instead.

Beautiful lake surrounded by forests. Pleasnatly quiet and great for a stroll. There's a small parking spot nearby, however you can also drop off at a nearby local bus stop. You can also rent a small paddle boat.

A small crater lake, 6km south of Ito city. The circumference is only 4 km, but this is the largest lake in Izu Peninsula where there are very few lakes and ponds. There are twelve islands, and the beautiful scene reflecting the Amagi Mountains on the lake is known as the ”the eye of Izu”. There are 250 cherry trees planted along the lake, with campsites. The lake is stocked with carp, black bass and bluegill, and is popular for fishers as well as people riding boats.

There are a few cafes along the lake. It’s beautiful but there is nothing much to do.

Some steps but not terribly difficult to walk a loop around the lake. We had fun spotting the giant koi fishes in the lake as well.

The New York Lamp Museum & Flower Garden is a unique destination offering a blend of art and nature. Situated near the Jogasaki Coast, it features an impressive collection of Tiffany lamps and stained glass art from the American art nouveau period. Visitors can also enjoy stunning ocean views and explore a seasonal flower garden with sunflowers dominating the landscape in summer. The museum provides a serene sanctuary for admiring splendid art while the cafe offers an opportunity to relax amidst this floral paradise.
Summer - sunflowers dominate the landscape (in May, chrysanthemums) overlooking the calm Pacific and the rugged Shizuoka coast. Kids and adults alike will definitley enjoy the floral feast of this exquisite garden. The stained glass lamps and windows' museum is a gorgeous sanctuary of splendid art. A bit pricey: the entrance and the food at the shop, but you wouldn't mind it because it's a flower heaven.

Eclectic combination flower garden and Tiffany lamp exhibit. Which is really quite good. Because Tiffany lamps have floral themes it works with the garden. Even in December some flowers were out and we would go back in spring. Very dog friendly. Some steep trails. Shop and cafe as well.

A very interesting combination of lamps and flower gardens but it makes sense when you learn about the history behind this place. It's not very big but there's a number of spectacular photo spots and the facilities are well-maintained. I strongly suggest going in June when the hydrangeas bloom, the hydrangea garden makes up almost half the area and is closed when out of season. There's also a cafe and gift store. This place is right at the entrance to the two hiking trails that go up the Jogasaki Coast and eventually get to the lighthouse and suspension bridge, so you can't miss it.

I enjoyed this garden a lot, there a lot of photo spot and the view on the coast is superb. The flowers are many and the garden is well kept. Inside there is a restaurant where you can have some nice dishes and coffee and relax watching the sea

Very unique and very beautiful place. It's open Garden, you can go with your Family and friends. Ocean view from the top is clear and mind relaxing. For visitors camera stands are available so everyone can take perfect photos. Also there are different areas of the park with different look, I liked the sky of umbrellas, actually everything is perfect. Lamps are so antique and unique all the details are clear and specific it is work of dedication and perfection. For pet they have so many cute options for photoshoot must explore that. Restaurant inside have some decent options however I personally felt it was costly. 1km walk to Jogasaki coast was beautiful experience. We took the Jungle path so it was easy and suggested for elderly and parents. Enjoy your time. I visited this place in Golden week. 30April2022.

Izu Oceanic Park, also known as IOP, is a popular destination on the Izu Peninsula offering a range of activities for families and diving enthusiasts. Yakiniku restaurant
JunJun is an exceptional yakiniku establishment in the area, and it's a delight to finally dine there. The restaurant comprises two sections: upon entering, you'll find the main dining area, while to the side lies the yakiniku section with a distinct menu. This time, I tried their delectable lunch menu. However, their à la carte options also appear enticing. The menu they offer is already impressive as it stands.
This place is off the beaten path, and you’ll only be able to reach it if you have a car, it is worth the drive. The quality of the meat is good and serving portions are just right. Was expecting to get some wasabi for the beef, but using Shimoda Salt was ok. (Wagyu Hormon) is very delicious.

Fabulous yakiniku place in the area. So glad to finally eat here. Restaurant has 2 sections, one side (upon entering) restaurant and to the left side, yakiniku side, with different menu. We had the yakiniku this time, lunch menu. The ala carte looks very tempting too. Menu as seen here is good as is. Even the restaurant side, didn't get to see the menu but looks good from other postings. The restaurant is renovated a year ago as we were told. Have been in business since 1960s, from grandparents generation. Ample parking, in front of the restaurant. Will look forward to visiting again.

Pizza and french fries are helpful <The same shop is also a cafe, so they have menus other than Yakiniku> Adults can enjoy Yakiniku, and children can enjoy Yakiniku. The Shimoda wine was medium and sweet and easy to drink! The jjigae wasn't spicy at all, so I wish it had been more spicy, but I enjoyed all the other dishes as well.

The Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival takes place for a month from early February when the Kawazuzakura starts to bloom. The festival features a cherry blossom-lined path along the Kawazu River, attracting numerous visitors who come to admire the flowers. Approximately 8,000 Kawazu cherry trees, with around 850 planted along a 2.5-mile stretch of the river, create a stunning display during this time.
Definitely a must visit spot to see Sakura! It's so pretty along the pathway beside the river. However, you do need to get there early to avoid the crowd. Parking do fill up quickly and it cost 1000yen. Around 11am, the parking is pretty much full. When I visited, it was full bloomed!

The Kawazu cherry blossoms (Kawazu-zakura) are a breathtaking sight and a must-see for any sakura enthusiast. Unlike the more common Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms, which bloom briefly in early April, Kawazu-zakura are an early-blooming variety, appearing as early as February and lasting for about a month. Their deep pink petals and long flowering period make them particularly stunning. One of the best places to experience these blossoms is in Kawazu, Shizuoka Prefecture, where the annual Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival (河津桜まつり) transforms the town into a picturesque paradise. The trees lining the Kawazu River create a tunnel of pink, beautifully complemented by yellow nanohana (rapeseed flowers) blooming nearby. The festival atmosphere is lively, with food stalls selling regional delicacies like sakura mochi and fresh seafood. At night, the illuminated blossoms add a magical touch, making it a great experience for both daytime and evening visitors. Overall, the Kawazu cherry blossoms offer a unique and serene hanami experience, perfect for those who want to enjoy Japan’s sakura season ahead of the crowds in March and April. Whether you’re a photographer, a nature lover, or simply looking for a relaxing spring getaway, Kawazu-zakura won’t disappoint.

The sakura trees are mainly planted along the river. The festival is on Feb. My visit was on 8 Feb. About 70-80% bloomed as there was a snow few days before. The full blossom seems around mid-Feb;1-2 weeks earlier than last year.

Kawazu Cherry Blossoms We came on 27 Feb, this is when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. It’s quite early for Japan in general. The sakura trees are mainly planted along the canal or river. Such a beautiful place, small town with lots of Sakura trees. Several food stalls were set up for the Sakura festival. We really loved this small town. Also it's really close to the station.

The priest carefully guided visitors through the narrow road to Hachiman Shrine, where a red stamp and chick decorations greeted them for the New Year. The main shrine's solid structure impressed with its splendor, while the sacred atmosphere of Hachiman-sama was felt despite its small size. The omikuji in the shape of an arrow added a cute touch to the solemnity of Hinaden and Tsurushibina.
(Translated by Google) The entrance was a little difficult to find, but I arrived there without any difficulty using Google Maps. It was a shrine with a very relaxing atmosphere. I think the priest's home is on the right side of the torii gate, and there I received a hand-written goshuin stamp from a kind-looking and elegant mother. The car was parked within the grounds. (Translated by Google) ★The sacred well and the legend of Yoritomo★ Hachiman Shrine is the main guardian shrine of Inatori, Higashiizu-cho, Shizuoka Prefecture, and is deeply revered by the local people. The date of its founding is unknown, but Yayoi period artifacts have been excavated from the grounds, and it is believed that rituals have been held there since ancient times. During the Heian period, a Sanbaso-style Shinto ritual was held, and currently, local children perform "children's Sanbaso" to dedicate the shrine. ◇Connection with Minamoto no Yoritomo This shrine has a deep connection with Minamoto no Yoritomo, and it is said that Yoritomo performed Mizugori (a custom of purifying the mind and body by bathing in cold water or seawater when praying to gods and Buddhas) at the well in the grounds to pray for the revival of the Genji clan. In addition, a Buddha statue that Yoritomo protected and made the principal image is enshrined, and it attracted the faith of many samurai who prayed for long-lasting military fortune. During the Edo period, it was deeply revered by the magistrates, and offered heihaku (offerings of offerings) to the shrine. Offerings such as 'Okinawa' (a general term for things offered to the gods in Shinto) continued to be made. During the Great Edo Earthquake in 1855, people from Inatori living in Edo offered to donate roof tiles for the worship hall, believing that the safety of people from Inatori was due to the protection of the local deity. On this occasion, a wealthy Edo merchant, Iseya Zenbei, donated 100 ryo (about 10 million yen), which made the restoration of the shrine possible. 10 million yen! That's very generous ( ̄ー ̄) smirk The shrine grounds are lined with onigawara tiles and donation signs from that time, conveying the efforts of our ancestors to the present day ◇A magnificent shrine building The current shrine building was rebuilt in 1864 and is a magnificent building made of cypress wood cut from the mountains of Amagi Recently, with assistance from the Inatori District Property District, the roof tiles have been replaced The grounds also feature a torii gate made of stone from Inatori that was erected in 1687, and a "Japanese-Russian War Memorial" built on the foundation of castle stones used in the repair of Edo Castle With such a history, Hachiman Shrine has been a valuable presence that has walked alongside the people of Inatori since ancient times, conveying the faith and culture of the region to the present day ◇Specialty Hanging decorations In the Inatori region, there has been a custom since the Edo period of displaying a pair of hanging decorations on both sides of the doll stand during the Girls' Festival. Even today, from February to March, you can see a series of hanging decorations in the precincts, including crawling dolls that resemble babies, Sanbaso dolls, and rabbits. ******************************************** [Enshrined deity] -Hotsusawake no Mikoto The guardian deity of Inatori, the guardian deity of the land. Cherry Hill Park, located near the Atagawa Onsen station, is a picturesque spot with Yoshino cherry trees that bloom beautifully during the season. The park offers a stunning view of Izu Oshima from its top. It's situated below the Itoen Hotel and can be reached via National Route 135, making it easily accessible for visitors. The sight of cherry blossoms falling in this area is particularly enchanting.

Atagawakaisuiyokuba Atagawa YOU Yu Beach, located in the beautiful coastline of Shizuoka Prefecture, is a popular resort area known for its pristine natural environment and unique services. The beach boasts clean waters and is a hotspot for swimming and surfing during the summer months. Surrounded by rich natural scenery, it's an ideal spot for leisurely walks and relaxation.
Embrace the dawn, rise at 4 am to witness the majestic sunrise. The experience is truly priceless.

Quite clean beach with a rescue team during day time. Wave is quite high and wind is strong thus needs certain skill of swimming.

Came here in the morning. The wave is high and no lifeguard. It’s near a hotel and you can wash your foot by outdoor water tap.

(Translated by Google) [Report before the beach opens on Saturday, June 28, 2025] - Location of the free showers Free showers are installed outside the building of the "public toilets" between Atagawakan and Hotel Setas Royal. There are two in total, one on the men's side and one on the women's side. The beach is about 300m long, so no matter where you sit, the distance to the showers is close and there is no problem. - About the parking lot at the beach The guide at the T-junction of Hotel Setas Royal states "Public parking lot 260m", but as far as I walked around the area, there was no place clearly marked as "public parking lot", so I was not sure. Does it refer to the area near the "Takaiso public toilet" at the northernmost part of the beach and the parking space along the coast south of the Atagawa coastal embankment? The other parking spaces along the beach have colored contact lenses with the hotel name in front of them, so it seemed like general cars could not be parked. It seems that there will be a shortage of parking spaces when the beach opens. - Distance from the station and surrounding hotels About a 5-minute walk from Izu Atagawa Station. The way there is easy as it is downhill, but the way back is a steep uphill climb and a bit tough if you have heavy luggage. I walked from the beach to the only convenience store in Atagawa, Family Mart along National Route 135 (the route goes from Atagawa Ocean Resort to Banana Crocodile Park without using stairs) for about 15 minutes, but I was sweating even with empty hands. It is possible to walk to hotels along the national route (Atagawa Prince or Itoen, etc.), but it is difficult to walk back after playing in the sea. ・About the foot bath (Atagawa Hot Park) It is located along the river in front of Hotel Shinayoshi. There is a foot washing area, and there is a notice to wash off the sand before entering. There is no shade, so I guess almost no one enters in the summer. I think it is useful when you want to wash your feet when returning to the hotel from the beach.

(Translated by Google) I visited on the day the beach opens in 2025. The sea is beautiful. There are areas with waves and areas that are calm, so it's fun whether you go with friends or family. There's not much trash on the beach, maybe because it's beach opening day. The good thing about this place is that there aren't many people, but there are many lifeguards, so it feels very safe. There are also free showers and toilets. There is only one beach hut, and no changing rooms or lockers. There was also one shop that felt more like a food stall. The menu isn't very extensive. They do have rental life jackets for around 1,000 yen. It cost 300 yen to inflate the life jackets. Rather than having a lively party, I think it's best to just bring a lunch bucket and a picnic blanket and relax. (Translated by Google) There are few sandy beaches in East Izu, with Ito, Kawana, Atagawa, and Imaihama being the only ones. Others are more famous, and this is a hidden gem, as it was originally an artificial beach made of gravel. The water is cleaner than Ito or Kawana. It's within walking distance from the station, and there's a parking lot along the beach. In season, there are parking spaces for hotel guests, beach huts, and headquarters, so there are fewer spaces, but you can still park for free. The toilets are clean, and it's nice that there's another shower (with cold water) on either side. Facing the sea, there's also a footbath at the back left, so use it if you get cold. Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
On August 6, 2023, I visited the Kamome Shokudo restaurant for lunch. Located near Yumigahama and Animal Kingdom, this eatery has an inviting atmosphere that caught my attention. The menu offers a variety of options including a delicious fried chicken set meal and a local fish sashimi bowl. The sashimi bowl consisted of five different types of fresh and flavorsome sashimi with no unpleasant odor.
Kamome Shokudo is a fantastic spot for delicious food in Higashi Izu! I tried the tendon during lunch, and it was absolutely flavorful and satisfying. The price was very reasonable for the quality and portion size, making it a great value. Parking is available, which is always a plus when exploring the area. Overall, an excellent place to enjoy a tasty meal—I highly recommend it!

I had the local fish tempura bowl, and the fish was very soft and fluffy, and the sauce on the rice was delicious. My husband didn't have fried horse mackerel, so he had fried white fish, and was surprised that the meat was just as soft and delicious as the tempura bowl. The local fish sashimi bowl was also thick and fresh, and delicious. The miso soup was a fish soup with a good broth. The atmosphere was good, and the female staff were very friendly, so it's a restaurant I'd like to visit again next time. Nishiki, taste of Izu offers a delightful variety of dishes with a focus on fresh seafood. The friendly staff ensures a pleasant dining experience, while the delicious tempura is particularly noteworthy. This restaurant provides a unique and enjoyable culinary experience in Izu.
Atagawa is a lesser-known, hidden gem of a tourist spot. Some parts of the town feel a bit rundown, but you'll find unique restaurants and accommodations scattered throughout, making it a fun place to explore. This time, I had lunch at one of the local izakayas. I ordered a seafood rice bowl — the sashimi was thickly sliced and very fresh. The rice, however, wasn’t vinegared, which some Japanese diners might find a bit disappointing. That said, for overseas visitors who aren’t fond of vinegared rice, it might actually be preferable. The service was friendly and attentive, and the lunch was reasonably priced for a tourist area. It’s a great destination for those looking for a quiet and off-the-beaten-path trip.

(Translated by Google) I took a short weekend trip to Izu. A friend of mine always visits the nearby Banana Crocodile Garden and Izu no Ajidokoro Nishiki, a restaurant he loves to visit whenever he visits Izu. The restaurant is popular with locals, and its lively interior is lined with seafood bowls and a la carte dishes, all of which looked delicious. My friend raved about the seafood bowl, but she always orders the horse mackerel tataki bowl. I also had this horse mackerel tataki bowl. ・Horse Mackerel Tataki Bowl The towering horse mackerel tower was an eye-catching bowl. The horse mackerel was fresh and firm, and while it was well-seasoned, you could really taste the umami of the ingredients. Although there was a generous portion of rice, the amount of horse mackerel was just as generous, making for a well-balanced meal that was enjoyed until the very end. The delicious seafood and the warm atmosphere of the restaurant were both comforting. It was a memorable experience from Izu! If you're on the hunt for an authentic dining experience, look no further than Chinese Food & Drinks Suehiro. This charming little eatery is a hidden gem that serves up Inatori's renowned meat fried rice, which many consider to be soul food. The cozy atmosphere and the dedication of the elderly chef create a warm ambiance that enhances your meal. Guests rave about their favorite combo of half-meat fried rice paired with ramen, while others can't resist ordering gyoza as well.

(Translated by Google) The famous restaurant where I was going to eat Inatori's famous meat fried rice was closed, so I was driving around wondering what was going on, when I happened to see Nobori, a meat fried rice restaurant, and decided to go inside. The restaurant is small, and the atmosphere is just the way I like it.When I looked at the menu, I saw that there was half-meat fried rice plus ramen, so I ordered that without hesitation, and my companion ordered regular fried rice and gyoza. The meat fried rice tasted like nothing I've ever had before and was so delicious! Even the regular fried rice was delicious!
