Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Mishima Taisha is a stunning Shinto temple with well-maintained grounds and a small museum displaying historical artifacts. Its origins date back over 1,300 years, making it an integral part of ancient Japanese history. As the Ichinomiya of Izu, the shrine holds great significance as the place where Minamoto no Yoritomo prayed for the revival of the Genji clan.
The Shrine at Mishima is beautiful and quintessential Japanese. It is free, so you can make a generous offering to the ancestors. If, like me (an uncultured British barbarian) you make an offering and bow deeply but forget to clap to wake the spirits, someone might be stood behind you to clap for you. Arigato gozaimashita to them. The gardens are a wonderful delight, and there is a deer enclosure and pools filled with carp (that’s C-A-R-P). A great place to put into practice all of the good manners you may have picked up on your travels.

When I went here, by recommendation of someone I know, kind of visited it during an event of hanami, where sakura was in full bloom and food stalls were stationed😉. The cherry blossoms was beautiful and recommend visiting the omiyage shop and buy the tea set🤭. Lastly, one star deduction for non-foreigner friendly area? Haha. Because everything was written in japanese, I couldn't do the praying😅.

This temple is truly charming and peaceful, filled with old traditions that make it special. It’s a popular spot loved by both locals and visitors. The atmosphere becomes even more magical at night, especially during the matsuri festival, when the lights and celebrations bring the temple to life. 🙏🏼🇯🇵🏯🎎 🌸 Wishes People Commonly Pray for at Mishima Taisha 1. Beautiful and historic shrine! Mishima Taisha Shrine is a peaceful and culturally rich destination. The traditional architecture, serene gardens, and sacred atmosphere make it perfect for reflection and photography. Walking around the grounds, you can feel the deep history and spiritual significance of the place. Ideal for families, couples, or anyone interested in Japanese culture and Shinto traditions. A must-visit when in Mishima!

Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
The Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium is a unique attraction that showcases deep-sea creatures, including luminescent fish, octopuses, and the rare coelacanth. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring frozen coelacanths, considered living fossils, and get up-close views of massive deep-sea isopods. The aquarium covers the depths of Suruga Bay and other deep-sea locations worldwide, displaying about 1,500 creatures from approximately 60 species.
Been to a number of aquariums and this has to be a really unique one with creatures not seen in some of the big aquariums. Many specimens of deep sea fish (naturally so, as they thrive in very different environments hard to replicate in the aquarium setting). Good place to learn about deep sea fishes and hopefully more written explanation in English would be helpful. For the price it is worth the visit. There are also some fun entertainment rides relating to the aquarium around it.
Quin C — Google review
This aquarium has a reasonable ticket price and is worth a visit, especially if you haven’t been before. The space inside is quite large and well-organized, making it easy to walk around without feeling crowded. While there aren’t many rare species on display, it’s still a fun and educational experience for all ages. There are restaurants and a parking lot conveniently located nearby, making it a great spot to spend a few hours with family or friends. Overall, a pleasant visit!
A W — Google review
We went on a Monday at 12pm. Even though it was a midday in the weekday, there was still a few people inside. Very unique selection of animals because it depends on what is caught. We went when it was off-season, so there was no flapjack octopus. In addition to the deep sea animals, there are comprehensive explanations of how they catch the animals, how they maintain the aquarium etc. Overall a bit of a small aquarium, but definitely worth a visit especially for its price!
Zach T — Google review
A very beautiful aquarium to visit, with a good and wide variety of fish. It's also located in a cozy town surrounded by typical regional foods and culture. Parking is large and easy to find.
Claudia M — Google review
Very interesting museum! It also has an aquarium floor with many different deep sea creatures. There are also English explanations on most objects. We saw real japanese spider crabs and they have (as the only museum in the world) frozen specimens of coelacanth. Very impressive. We had a great time and learned a lot!
Lats — Google review
If you are in the area, might as well. It's not too big but you will see lots of species you would rarely see otherwise. Might make you hungry for the fish market outside lol. The gift shop has some good stuff. The isopods give me the creeps in real form and plush form.
Andrew L — Google review
Even amongst the many aquariums in Japan, this is a unique one, though not that huge. Focused solely on deep sea creatures, it has many fascinating live specimens and it even display non deep sea affiliate of the deep sea specimens just so we can observe the difference. Of course the main highly is the frozen specimen at -20 degrees Celsius and incredibly has been frozen since the 80s as the only one in the world that is 100% original (not taxidermy).
Rtexal T — Google review
It is a very interesting museum. Rather small, but focusing on the deep sea which you dont have in other aquariums. We learned new things which was very fun. It is not a must see, but if you are in Mushimi or Numazu then your options on activities in the summer heat are limited and you will most probably enjoy it like we did 😀

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks

On August 14, 2020, I visited the Ganjojuin temple in Jike, Izunokuni city. This historical Buddhist temple, belonging to the Tenshu-Kimiyama Koyasan Shingon sect, houses several remarkable wooden statues. Among them is a national treasure Buddha statue created by the renowned artist Unkei. The temple also displays other exquisite wooden statues of Amida Nyorai, Fudo Myoo, and Bishamonten.
Charmy historical site. The story of the bronze statues is really interesting

(Translated by Google) This is a temple associated with the Hojo clan, and you can see five national treasure Buddha statues, including Amida Nyorai created by Unkei. The temple from that time does not remain, and the Buddha statue is kept in a concrete storage building. Still, the quiet atmosphere surrounded by trees is very solemn.

(Translated by Google) I had been checking it out since it was popular in the historical drama series, and finally got to visit. It's a smaller temple than I imagined. It was worth the visit just to be able to see the five Buddhist statues by Unkei, designated as national treasures. It was a large temple modeled after Motsu-ji Temple in Hiraizumi, Oshu, and it's truly miraculous that it has survived this long despite having since fallen into decline due to several wars. I paid my respects at the grave of Hojo Tokimasa, moved by the passion of the people who had cared for and protected it. The mascot dog, Rocky, is also adorable 😍 (Original)

(Translated by Google) Now that the craze for the historical drama "The 13 Lords of the Kamakura" has passed, I decided to visit the temple in peace. Due to the damage caused by war (the fall of the Kamakura Shogunate and Hideyoshi's Siege of Odawara), the building no longer contains anything from its original form, but the collection still contains many treasures. Above all, there are five National Treasure Buddhist statues made by Unkei. While there are many works that are said to be by Unkei, these five are one of the few that have been confirmed as "by Unkei." Each statue is impressive and well worth seeing. It's a shame that photography is not allowed, but it's well worth seeing.

The Nirayama Reverberatory Furnaces, a historic iron-smelting facility from the Edo period, feature impressive 15.7-meter brick and steel chimneys. These furnaces are not only a significant part of Japan's military history but also hold UNESCO World Heritage status as the only remaining reverberatory furnaces in the country. The domed roof of the furnace was designed to reflect and concentrate heat for casting high-quality metal used in making cannons.
Nice place to spend a short time. We didn't actually go in but I wanted to see the towers.
Matthijs — Google review
Well, for a recognized and designated world heritage structure, it didn't really exude any of the "wow" factor. And to be honest it was a lot smaller than I expected, details and information around the furnace were quite lacking for visitors The tourist center did put up some decent exhibits (all in Japanese though) and information in regards to the history of the industrial revolution in Japan and how the furnace was a symbol of Japan's initial attempts at kick-starting the steel/metal industry. The surrounding area is surprisingly nice. With a tea plantation terrace nearby, and nestled in a quiet, quaint neighborhood.
TJ L — Google review
Great history of Japan and craftsmanship. It is a small historical museum where they made cannons and insightful how it was made. The time it took to make the cannon and also to bore hole in the cannon made it time consuming. Good historical site.

I was treated very kindly when I came I to the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnaces Historical site. I do not speak any Japanese and the employees were so helpful by giving me an English brochure to learn more about this very important site to mark the beginning of the Japanese industrial revolution. The video was in Japanese but I understood the iron smelting process. Fascinating! I like history.

Izu Panorama Park is a picturesque mountain park that offers stunning views of Mt. Fuji from its cable car, viewing terrace, and restaurant. In addition to this, the area boasts various attractions such as the UNESCO World Heritage site Nirayama Reverbatory Furnaces, Mishima Skywalk - Japan's longest pedestrian suspension bridge, and the beautiful Kawazuzakura cherry trees.
Great experience. We went around 3pm and it wasn't crowded at all. We had the cable car to ourselves and get to enjoy the amazing view. The view of Mt Fuji at the top was amazing. There's few restaurants at the top which you can sit and enjoy the view. Comes with a small garden for you to walk along and a free foot spa with an amazing view! Parking was free. The shop sells a lot of cute souvenirs and Japan snacks!

I took the guests on a gondola ride and we walked around the summit area. Although I personally wished I could have relaxed at the terrace café while enjoying the mountain view, the guests took their time and seemed to enjoy themselves. They appeared very pleased with the spectacular view.
ITokyoTravel-iTokyoDrive T — Google review
The view at the top is breathtaking!! The tranquility and beauty of Mt.Fuji gave me the chills because it is purely beautiful to see and admire. You can choose to hike up the mountain. Because we're travelling with two kids under 4yo -- we opt for the cable car. It is clean, roomy, and very well maintained. Not scary at all~ There are many facilities at the top. There are cafes, some eateries, souvenir shops, a small shrine area, kids playground, a food onsen and plenty photo spots with Mt Fuji as backdrop. My kids went straight to the kids area first (of coz) - climbing ropes, flying foxes, slides, etc. There isn't any soft paddings on the ground.....most are dirt and rocks....so would suggest supervising the younger kids when they are playing. Go make time and get a drink or small snack at the cafe, so that you can enjoy the seating they have near the infinity "pool". There are massive day bed sofas available outside too....which i believe you can rent hourly. The food are delicious and reasonably priced!! Definitely worth visiting when in the area :D Visited back in Oct 2022.

The Izu Panorama Park Ropeway Station is the starting point of a scenic 1.8-kilometer ropeway ride up Mt. Katsuragi in Izunokuni, Shizuoka. The base station itself is well-equipped with a souvenir shop and an Italian restaurant, making it a pleasant stop even before you board the gondola. Each ropeway cabin is spacious, fitting up to six adults comfortably. The 7-minute journey offers breathtaking views of the Izu Peninsula, Suruga Bay, and even Mt. Fuji on clear days. The ride is smooth, relaxing, and perfect for travelers of all ages. At the summit, you’ll arrive at the Ao Terrace, a modern observation deck with cafes, walking trails, and footbaths. It’s a beautifully designed area where visitors can enjoy refreshments while soaking in the panoramic landscape. The ropeway operates year-round, with round-trip fares at ¥2,500 for adults and ¥1,400 for children. The station is wheelchair accessible, and there’s free parking for visitors. The station is also easily reachable by bus from Izu-Nagaoka Station. Whether you’re here for a quick visit or a full day of exploring, the ropeway station sets the tone for a relaxing, scenic experience that highlights the natural beauty of the region.
Gator — Google review
Very nice here. The ropeway ride is thrilling, especially with steep climbs. On cloudy days like mine, Mt. Fuji might be hidden, but the view is still stunning. The footbath is relaxing (bring your own towel or buy one). Plenty of snacks around—the black beef curry with wasabi is incredible and highly recommended. You can stroll the whole area in under an hour, including a small quiet shrine. Not too crowded. Definitely worth visiting.

An expensive entry fee, but a well maintained boardwalk, and beautiful views of the area.. we were lucky to see Mt Fuji the day we went.

Perfect tourist trap around here becuase you get a wondering view of Mt. Fuji and Shizouka oceans and mountains. One round trip is ¥3500 and it is worth it, there is actually a lot of stuff you can do up there. Cafe and snacks are yummy and the Matcha ice cream is the bomb. The glass noodles are awesome becuase you get to cut it yourself. The Dango is also something to try! There is a nice foot bath for your feet! Please do it and there is towels to use for a small donation. A shrine for a quick prayer. The picture spot at the top of the area. Then they just extended the walk area for more views! Beautiful~ Highly recommended! The gift shop is also awesome as well. Lots of wonderful products and not just weird stuff everything is good quality gifts and snakcs.

Izu Panorama Park truly stands out as one of the best places to view Mount Fuji. My visit was in winter, under a cloudless blue sky, which made the experience even more spectacular. From the mountain top, you get an unparalleled view of the majestic Mount Fuji, but that's not all. The panorama includes Suruga Bay, the rolling hills of the Izu Peninsula, sprawling farmlands, quaint houses, and winding roads, all coming together to paint a breathtaking picture. The clarity of the day was ideal for photography, with Fuji-san standing out against the horizon. However, be prepared for the wind, as it was quite strong during my visit, which is something to consider if you're planning to spend a lot of time soaking in the views. Despite the chilly gusts, the beauty of the landscape made it all worthwhile. The park itself is well-maintained, offering various vantage points to capture the perfect shot or simply to enjoy the natural beauty. Overall, if you're in the area, Izu Panorama Park is a must-visit for anyone looking to see one of Japan's most iconic sights from a unique and beautiful perspective. Just remember to bring a jacket to fend off the wind! Scenery Rating:5.0 Ease of arrival score:4.0

Observation deck
At the top of the mountain, Ao Terrace offers a stunning observation deck with three water basins designed to reflect the blue hues of Mt. Fuji, Suruga Bay, and the sky. The vibrant blue color of the water enhances the breathtaking panoramic views from this vantage point. On clear days, one basin even reflects an upside-down image of Mt. Fuji's peak. Visitors can savor these vistas while feeling a gentle breeze and enjoying private spaces for tea or relaxation.
An unexpected good time! We visited the Izu Panorama Park bc of a YouTuber I follow. I was expecting the cafe at the top but there was so much more than just the cafe!! Kids playground, walking trail, hammocks, shrine, look out spot and very 360 cool views. Fuji was hiding from us but we still had a great time! Give yourself 1-2hrs to just hangout and enjoy.

At the base, there’s a souvenir shop with lots of local gifts, and at the top, you’ll find a cozy café where you can relax and enjoy the scenery. The reflections on the water surface make it an ideal spot for photography — every shot looks like a postcard. Peaceful, beautiful, and definitely worth a visit for both the view and the atmosphere.

We were late and one of the last few to go up the ropeway. Because it was sakura season, we saw cherry blossoms on the way up. At the top, the view was breathtaking. The sunset and cherry blossoms set a nice landscape to the whole place. Fuji-san was initially hiding behind the clouds but eventually peeked out after 30-45mins. My travel companions said we were very lucky as Fuji-san doesnt appear all the time. It is true, bcos he was hiding behind fog when we went to Lake Kawaguichiko the next day. We sat at the chairs along the open terrance with hot coffee in hand. It was very calming. We didnt walk around bcos we were there late but I will make it a point to do the walkabouts when i go again. I see from other reviews there is a lot more to see.

Ao Terrace, located at the summit of Mt. Katsuragi and accessible via the Izu Panorama Park Ropeway, is a peaceful, beautifully designed spot offering stunning panoramic views of Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay. The terrace features wide open spaces, relaxing seating, and tranquil water features that reflect the sky and surrounding mountains—perfect for unwinding and soaking in the natural beauty. There are several amenities at the top: Katsuragi Coffee serves drinks and light bites, and Katsuragi Saryo offers local specialties and desserts in a modern Japanese-style café. For those seeking a quieter, more private experience, small gazebos are available for rent. Visitors can also enjoy the Fujimi-no-Ashiyu, a footbath overlooking the mountains, or stroll along the boardwalk to Saezuri-no-Oka Observatory for more peaceful views and the sounds of nature. The area is pet-friendly, clean, and well-maintained, making it ideal for couples, families, or solo travelers. Whether you’re here for the views, the food, or just to relax, Ao Terrace is a must-visit destination that perfectly blends scenic beauty with comfort. Best enjoyed on clear days for maximum visibility of Mt. Fuji.

Nestled in the charming Izunokuni City, Sakurabana is a delightful culinary gem that transforms from a set meal restaurant during the day to an inviting izakaya at night. Renowned for its delectable fried dishes, many visitors come eager to sample their famous fried chicken. On my visit, I opted for the cutlet curry instead—an indulgent choice featuring thick and crispy deep-fried cutlets paired with a uniquely flavored Western-style curry roux that was simply divine.
Delicious!!!

The three types of local fish were horse mackerel, bonito, and cutlassfish, all of which had a nice texture and didn't taste fishy. The swordfish is specially grilled. The tonteki is also flavored with garlic and delicious. The satisfaction is more than the price. There are 5 parking spaces behind the store. The main dish is solid, but the sashimi is also 3 pieces each, making it hearty and satisfying. The tuna is soft and not muscular, and the octopus is large and very satisfying. The seasoning of the main batter is quite light and it feels like eating it with the taste of tartar. Overall, it's a Japanese set meal restaurant where you can feel the spirit of service in terms of quantity and customer service. For lunch today, I ordered a seafood bowl for 1,300 yen (tax included). You can choose the amount of rice from about 4 to 5 levels, so you can adjust it perfectly depending on how hungry you are that day! For some reason, they also served drinks! I was so happy! For rice, I chose white rice, which is my preference! The rice was piping hot, so I put the seafood on my plate and enjoyed each piece! They have a wide variety of set menu items, and so far everything has been very delicious! If you're interested, please go on an empty stomach! As others have said, the part-time worker and his wife are not suited for customer service. When it's crowded, you can understand how it feels if you think about the people waiting outside. However, I can't help but feel like I want him to go home soon. I can understand the feeling, but it's a vestibule. It's a difficult place, customer service. For first-time users It's not a place to have a leisurely meal. Let's go home right after eating. It looks like a bar, but isn't it possible to relax at night? A simple question. There is a parking lot in front of the store for one car, and there is also a parking lot in the back, but it is difficult to find, so we do not recommend it for people with low-height cars. *I added a take-out fried chicken bento. Since the fried food has a reputation for being delicious, I came here thinking of trying some fried chicken. This time, I had my favorite cutlet curry, so I decided to try fried chicken next time. It's a cutlet curry, but the cutlet is deep-fried to be thick and firm. The curry roux was Western-style, had a unique flavor, and was very delicious. The curry roux and cutlet go great together. Furthermore, I am grateful that a large serving of rice is free for lunch. However, there is a problem with leftovers and sharing of large portions, so order as much as you can eat. Next time I definitely want to try the fried chicken set meal. This restaurant is recommended because it's delicious, plentiful, and reasonably priced. Added in May 2025. Due to the rice turmoil that followed every day, a large serving cost an extra 100 yen. I ate the grated fried chicken set meal, and it was delicious, with a large amount, and the seasoning and frying were perfect. The gomoku yakisoba that my companion ordered was also good. Uwomasa Sushi offers a warm and welcoming ambiance, serving delicious seafood. It is fortunate to have the restaurant to oneself, and the service is exceptional. Despite the language barrier, the English menu is sufficient. The sushi is extraordinary, prompting one to order seconds. The owners are incredibly kind, ensuring a memorable experience. It's highly recommended for those staying at nearby onsens seeking a cozy traditional sushi spot with an English menu.

If you're looking for a cozy dining spot, the Yoshinoya Route 136 Izunagaoka Store is worth a visit. This establishment strikes a balance with its moderate size and welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal stop before work or during your evening outings. On my recent trip, I indulged in their limited-time oyakodon paired with a refreshing salad set; the eggs were perfectly runny and enhanced by shichimi seasoning.

(Translated by Google) I went there for lunch, and when the food was being served, a male waiter was bending over like an old man, holding a trench coat with a set meal on it, talking from his mouth at a very close distance, looking down, without a mask, and spraying saliva at the food. It was extremely unsanitary and there was a risk of infection, so I couldn't eat it, so I paid the bill and left the restaurant. My wife, who works in the restaurant industry, also said it was unacceptable and she couldn't eat it. The meal money for two people was wasted. When I looked it up later, it seems that Yoshinoya's rules are that you can't wear a mask when serving food, and that you can spray saliva aerosols on the food when speaking. Moreover, they say that they will be carrying out thorough hygiene management. It seems that it is hygienic even if you spray saliva. However, I think there are a certain number of people who are concerned about it, like me. If you don't mind this kind of behavior, I think it's okay to use the restaurant. When I inquired about it to the headquarters, they were ignored and there was no response. In the disclaimer, it said that they would not respond to anything that is inconvenient for the company, and I thought that it was a company that would be in trouble for the comments about virgin daughters being addicted to drugs. By the way, I went back into a nearby family restaurant and the kitchen and hall staff were all wearing masks. For day 2, we recommend exploring the northeast side side of town. Start the day off with Izu Mito Sea Paradise, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Mid-Air Park Bell of Happiness (Izu Panorama Park). All together, your day would be filled with about 6 hours of non-stop fun.

Nature & Parks
Izu Mito Sea Paradise is a renowned aquarium featuring penguins, walruses, and a variety of marine life from Suruga Bay. The facility boasts a large pool that can hold 80 tons of natural seawater, providing an ideal habitat for nearly 90 species of sea creatures. Visitors can witness captivating performances by marine animals and observe emperor penguins and ornamental fish in the aquarium area.
One of the best place to enjoy your time with family! The dolphin and sea lion shows are mind blowing!! There was a show where they feed a 640kg sea lion and that was sooo fun to watch! You can enjoy many deep sea fish and creatures! Also there is a snack stand that has many food options and the price is reasonable. Try the jellyfish ice cream. It has real jellyfish inside. Really tasty! There is a gift shop also that has many beautiful things you'll like! Prices are reasonable compared to other gift shops. Ticket price: 2200 yen (if bought there). If you buy from website or Line coupon, then it'll be 2000 yen. For those above 64 years old, ticket price is 1800 yen. I'd say, the ticket price sounds expensive but the experience is totally worth it!! Plan for 5 hours and you'll enjoy many many things!

The price is rather steep for the scale of the aquarium but it's quite understandable given it's located in a small town. There wasn't much to do here rather than aquariums and performance show, if you wanted to catch the show at least you have to time your visit right because they run on a schedule. It was quite packed when I visit so I'm not sure if they still run performance if there's only few people on board. Something to note, after the entrance they asks you for an involuntary photoshoot then at the exit they will ask you to buy off the print from them for a certain fee (about 2000 yen iirc). This might catch you off guard so you can either politely say no or if you are a fan of LL! Sunshine, you can buy your photo attached to an acrylic keychain of your favorite member for 1500 yen. I would recommend visiting this place at least once if you are in Numazu area.

Hojoji is a Zen Buddhist temple of the Rinzai sect, associated with the Kencho-ji school. It's steeped in the history of the Hojo clan, who played a crucial role in the Kamakura period as regents (rising from servants to leaders). (Translated by Google) After leaving Chotoku-ji Temple, it's about a 10-minute bike ride to Hojo-ji Temple. You enter from the street, but there are signs, so as long as you don't miss them, you'll get there easily. The nearest station is Nirayama Station. The guide says it's a 25-minute walk, but you'll want to allow an additional 5 minutes to cross the bridge. There is a bus from the station (get off at Ema bus stop), but it is infrequent (and only runs on weekdays), and the sightseeing bus has been discontinued. If you're walking, I recommend checking the timetable and taking the bus either on the way there or back. It's best to avoid it in the summer. This temple was built by Hojo Yoshitoki for his eldest son, who died at a young age. Hojo Yoshitoki was a member of a non-main branch of the Hojo family, and the remains of his residence are said to be around nearby Ema Park. (The regent position was in effect to exile the first regent, Tokimasa, so although Yoshitoki is listed as the second regent, it's fair to say that he was actually the first.) Izu's great river? Ema is on the west bank of the Kano River, and the main family residence is on the opposite bank. The main family temple and prayer hall are also located on the east bank of the river. For a while after the taiga drama aired, it seemed possible to pay an admission fee and view the temple treasures inside the main hall, but it's been two years since then, I think? Now, you can't enter the main hall and you have to worship from the outside. However, it seems to be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (no written notices allowed), so be careful if you're collecting goshuin stamps. The prefabricated hut to the left of the mountain gate serves as a gift shop (where amulets and other items are distributed) and has a call bell, but when you enter the temple grounds, a temple official came out and was waiting at the gift shop. There is also the grave of Yoshitoki and his wife, but since we had to pass through the cemetery, we informed the temple staff that we would be visiting before going to the grave. After paying the admission fee of 500 yen (maybe because they are broadcasting the 13 members of Kamakura-dono) at the reception next to the Sanmon gate, you can enter the shrine grounds. In the main hall, there was a Buddhist statue from the Kamakura period, and a embroidery cloth said to have been donated by Masako Hojo was on display. It seems to be a special release. Coco's Restaurant is a delightful dining spot that promises a satisfying experience for all. Recently, I decided to visit the Izu Nirayama branch after an unsatisfactory outing at another location. To my delight, the food arrived promptly within ten minutes, even during the bustling lunchtime rush. The atmosphere was lively yet organized, making it easy to enjoy my meal amidst other diners. I made sure to avoid peak afternoon hours and was rewarded with a smooth dining experience.

The restaurant wasn't even full, and there were plenty of empty seats (angry). I guess cramming customers in like crazy increases the staff's work efficiency. It brings me to tears to think that all restaurants and shops will be like this from now on! I wish the staff would at least show some consideration and ask, "Would you like to sit somewhere else?" McDonald's, a renowned and established fast-food enterprise distinguished for its delectable hamburgers and crispy potato sticks, has enjoyed an enduring presence in the industry. Recently, they introduced a refreshing twist to their menu with the introduction of a novel garlic and pepper-infused burger. This addition was well-received by patrons who appreciated the delightful variation it offered. In general, McDonald's maintains a reputation for providing quality food that satisfies customers' appetites while adhering to their high standards.

I stopped by this McDonald's on a road trip through Izu, and the staff were friendly and able to understand my order in broken Japanese. The store is fairly spacious and had enough seats around a weekday lunchtime. There's ample parking beside the mall as well.

Nestled in the charming Izunagaoka Onsen area, Hashimoto is a delightful soba restaurant that has been serving up delicious dishes for over 30 years. This hidden gem is perfect for travelers who have indulged in Izu's renowned seafood and are looking for a lighter meal. The soba here benefits from the region’s pristine water, making it exceptionally tasty.
Delicious soba popular with the locals. Very reasonable prices and great portions! The staff were very friendly and helpful, and even came out to direct us to parking spots. They have six recommended soba dishes and those are priced between 1000-1600yen. We arrived at 1230pm on a Saturday and managed to get a table right away. However, a queue had formed by the time we left the restaurant.

By car, it's located on the road to the left off National Route 414 heading toward Shuzenji. There's also a parking lot. It actually opened 30 years ago when I stayed at Nagaoka Onsen. Back then, the soup was dark in color and flavor, and slightly spicy. It was winter, so I ordered the warm kakiage tempura soba. First of all, I was surprised by the size of the kakiage! It was so big, it almost spilled out of the bowl, and it was very filling. It was a bit spicy, but I remember it soaking up the tempura and being incredibly delicious. It's been a while since I've had it, so I was looking forward to seeing how the flavor had changed. I ordered the kakiage tempura soba and the small shrimp tempura soba. The tempura was as big as ever! I couldn't tell if the small shrimp were really small shrimp! But it was delicious! I'm not sure if it was because I was eating it in a cold soba, but the dipping sauce was not too salty, and the broth had a strong broth flavor. It was delicious. It was lunchtime on the last Sunday of the Obon holiday, and at a glance, the clientele seemed to be split evenly between locals and tourists. There were also many elderly locals dining alone, which gave me the impression that this is a restaurant with deep roots in the local community. By the way, I visited on a Wednesday lunchtime, there was parking available, and no line. Is it a little pricey for soba? It's delicious, but the noodles are a little thin, a bit too refined for me. I want to fully enjoy the aroma of the soba, so thin noodles are overpowered by the broth. It was also a mistake to choose the hot one. I'm sure it was difficult, as many golf courses had damaged greens due to the extreme heat, but the greens were in excellent condition. The trees on the course were also beautifully pruned, and the entire course is beautiful. It was a golf course that made me want to return. The facilities, courses, greens, and hospitality of the staff are all excellent. The clubhouse is luxurious. There are three courses, and although they are mountain courses, there are almost no uphill runs and they are not tricky. There are almost no ponds. The greens are well maintained. But they are not very fast. I was engrossed in playing and did not notice, but I don't think you could see Mt. Fuji from the course. Although my score was not good, it is a golf course that I would definitely like to challenge again. Nestled in the picturesque Izu highlands, Izunirayama Country Club offers a delightful golfing experience that combines stunning views and well-maintained facilities. On my recent visit, we were fortunate to enjoy sunny weather, which contrasted sharply with a previous foggy outing. The course features challenging ups and downs that test your skills while providing breathtaking vistas of Mt. Fuji and the surrounding cityscape.
What a surprisingly beautiful course, with views of Mt. Fuji at quite a few holes. Many holes with city views also. There were many ups and downs to challenge your golf skills. The course was in good condition also. Definitely very enjoyable round. The green fees were quite reasonable.
Tammy L — Google review
Interesting and fun layout. Good maintenance and and well conditioned golf course. Very busy course with people coming from all the big nearby cities (Mishima, Atami, Usami). 27 hole layout with a fair number of blind tee shots and med to extreme elevation changes.

(Translated by Google) The last time I visited, there was a thick, dense fog that made it impossible to see more than a few meters ahead, which was disappointing (and my score was poor too), but this time we were blessed with sunny weather and, as it is on high ground, a cool breeze made it fun to play. I'd like to thank the staff who greeted me in the morning, the front desk staff, the hall staff at lunch, the master's room, and everyone involved with the carts. Each area was properly managed, and I was able to spend a fun day there. I played on the East and Middle courses, and although there were some ups and downs, the fairways and rough were well maintained and the greens were in good condition. There seem to be many golf courses in the surrounding area, so it's a good option. Daikanyashiki, a soba noodle shop, was visited for the first time. Despite potential delay due to traffic, the staff kindly accommodated by advising caution on the way. The establishment had an interesting layout, exuding an inviting atmosphere. The cuisine offered was not only delectable but also highly recommended. Additionally, Daikanyashiki accepted PayPay as a payment method, contributing to convenience for customers.
I am very happy have discovered this gem. We often stay nearby and have passed by the sign for this restaurant menu times on the way to and from the shops in Kannami. The other day we decided to pop in. The atmosphere is captivating and the gift shop is amusing and somehow adds to the anticipation. I had unagi and it was perfect: hot, light and tasty with excellent broth enhancing the bed of rice. My wife had tempura which she enjoyed so much that we returned a soon as we could to sample more of the food. The standard wa maintained, the service is friendly and helpful, and the building is spacious, clean and attractive. We shall be back!

But I couldn't imagine being left there for over an hour without a word of "please wait a little longer." Just as I started to worry that we had been kept waiting too long, the food finally arrived, but it was only enough for five people, and it was served gradually over time. More than 30 minutes later, just as the first five people had finished, the next two people's portions were brought, and nearly 10 minutes later the final two were served... Why was the grated daikon radish meant for the tempura sauce served with the warm soba tempura without tempura sauce, but no grated daikon radish on the tempura with tempura sauce??? The arrangement of the pickles was inconsistent, sometimes carefully and sometimes sloppily... But that was just the beginning. I chose the "Daikan Special Tempura Soba" because it came with a shrimp tempura, but the tempura itself wasn't cooked through. 世界遺産の駅! World Heritage station! This is the station from where you walk to Hansharo which also includes a micro brewery of the same name! For the railway buffs: Izu-Nagaoka Station was opened on May 20, 1898 as Nanjō Station (南条駅 Nanjō -eki) as the terminal station for the first phase of construction of the Sunzu Line. The line was extended onwards to Ōhito on July 17, 1899. The station was given its present name on May 25, 1919. The station building was rebuilt in 1986. Izu-Nagaoka Station has one side platform and one island platform connected to the station building by an overpass. However, only the island platform serving tracks 2 and 3 is in normal use for passenger traffic and is used for bidirectional traffic for both normal and express services. The station building is manned and has automatic ticket machines, a manned service counter and shops.

The mikan squash had something like mikan jam in it, and it was very rich and satisfying. I'd like to try a different menu item the next time I use the station. Moriyamanishi Park offers stunning views of Izunokuni City from its observation deck, making it a perfect spot to admire the beautiful autumn leaves and cherry blossoms. The park features a picturesque cherry blossom tunnel and a refreshing view of the Kano River and mountains from the top of Mt. Moriyama. While there are some steep stairs to climb, the panoramic scenery makes it worth the effort.
I don’t know why the reviews are low. It’s a park to sit down and relax. Watch the river, enjoy the flowers and just take it easy.

Most of the places are not in a good location because the trees are overgrown, but you can still see a lot of things around here. There appear to be multiple entrances to Nirayama Castle, including paths by a fishing pond where locals gather and the Sannomaru tennis court. From there, one can head towards Honmaru from Gongen Kuruwa (Kumano Shrine) while passing some pits along the way. The main enclosure provides a moderate view of the surroundings, with an abandoned nearby fortress.

(Translated by Google) Arrive at Shiroike Shinsui Park in about 20 minutes on foot from Nirayama Station. If you are driving, you can park at the Egawa residence or the parking lot on the north side of Shinsui Park, and the entrance to the castle that leads to Sannomaru is right there. However, if you want to see the remains of Horikiri and other structures, we recommend walking from the station. To go to the castle ruins and water park on foot, just follow the information board. As you walk up the slope beside the junior high school, you will come to a cut-off that is closed to vehicles. Actually, this is Horikiri. After passing through Horikiri, you will arrive at Shiroike Shinsui Park. Furthermore, if you turn left according to the information board, you will soon see Horikiri on your left. If you go up the stairs further ahead, you will come across a Horikiri with a sign that says "Horikiri 3". If you go north along the mountainside, you will come to the Sannomaru castle entrance and the parking lot, so if you head directly from the parking lot, you will not be able to see these ruins. Additionally, there are ruins of a moat surrounding the east side of Sannomaru in the parking lot, but there are no information boards, so be careful not to overlook it. The slope leading from the castle entrance to Sannomaru bends to the right, making it look like a ``slope square''. Sannomaru is a tennis court. The top of the earthwork on the right after climbing the slope may be a turret platform. If you follow the information board, you will arrive at Gongen Kuruwa, where Kumano Shrine is located, at the end of the earthwork opening (toraguchi). You can also head here directly from the water park. It is surrounded by earthworks, and there is a shrine on the platform on the water park side. There may have been some kind of castle facility, as it has a large area. There is also a Horikiri between Gongen Kuruwa and Ninomaru. If you follow the road, you will reach Ninomaru. It is a large area surrounded by earthworks, so major facilities may have been located here. The earthworks on the north and south sides are widely leveled, and could they have been used as turrets? Between the Ninomaru and the Honmaru there is a trench and a buried earthen bridge. Climb the stairs at the end of the trench to reach the main enclosure, the highest point. It's a small place, but the view is good. It is said that you can also see Mt. Fuji from here. Nirayama High School at the foot of the mountain is the remains of a residence. The main entrance is near the main gate of the high school. The current castle ruins are small, but in the past it was a magnificent castle surrounded by double and triple moats. There are also forts built nearby, making it a wide-area group of forts centered around the main castle, and it's fun to imagine what it might have looked like in days gone by. In general, the earthworks and trenches are well preserved, but the signs and explanation boards are not very well maintained, so unless you have some prior knowledge, you won't be able to figure it out. It's a shame because I would have enjoyed it more if it had information about the excavation results and characteristics. One of the sacred places for Hojo fans. I hope they can improve it a little more. Many branch castles and forts have been confirmed around Nirayama Castle, but due to time constraints, I was only able to visit Nirayama Castle. The area around Nirayama Castle appears to have once been a wetland. It seems that there was a water moat around that part. Nirayama Castle seems to have been a castle that combined the upper part of the mountain and the lower part of the castle, but now the water moat has been filled in and the lower part has become Nirayama High School. Some parts of the mountaintop area have been converted into tennis courts, etc., but the Honmaru, Ninomaru, Gongen Kuruwa, etc. retain their castle-like features. The main enclosure is not very large, but you can see Mt. Fuji up close. The earthworks of Ninomaru can be seen, and there is a moat and an earthen bridge between it and the main enclosure. To the south of the main enclosure, there is a small enclosure along the ridge, and the remains of a structure surrounded by a shoji moat-like earthwork called Shiozo can be seen. If Nirayama Castle were to be taken alone, only the mountaintop portion remains, and it is not very large. You might get a different impression if you tour it together with the surrounding branch castles. Nirayama Castle was developed as a base by Hojo Soun at the end of the 15th century. After Soun's death, the Hojo clan's headquarters moved to Odawara Castle, but Nirayama Castle was also an important base for the Hojo clan's control of Izu. Nirayama Castle is a famous castle that withstood Takeda Shingen's invasion of Suruga in 1570 without falling, and in 1590 when Toyotomi Hideyoshi invaded Odawara, it was surrounded by 50,000 Toyotomi troops with 3,600 soldiers. After the war, it became a castle owned by Tokugawa Ieyasu, but was abandoned in 1601. Ujinori, who was Ujinao's younger brother and Ujikuni's older brother, still tried to find a way to make peace, but in the end he decided to sequester himself in the castle. Ujinao was confined to Odawara Castle in Sagami, the main castle, Ujikuni to Hachigata Castle in Musashi, and Ujiki to Nirayama Castle in Izu, but the one who fought more bravely than anyone else was Ujiki, who was the most pacifist and sought a solution through diplomacy until the end. I knew about this background and had high expectations because the Hachigata Castle I had visited earlier was wonderful, but to be honest, it wasn't that great. First of all, it is not well preserved. From the medieval period to the early modern period, the Egawa family, which claimed to be descended from the Seiwa-Genji clan, had power in Nirayama. Following the Hojo clan and then the Tokugawa clan, they ruled an area of up to 100,000 koku as hereditary magistrates during the Edo period. In the Meiji era, the current Nirayama High School was established within the ruins of Nirayama Castle under the initiative of the Egawa family. The castle ruins were sold off and turned into public facilities and private homes. If you head towards Nirayama Castle from the nearest station, Nirayama Station, you will pass Nirayama High School and private houses, so you will need to go around to Shiroike Water Park on the other side. Most of the castle ruins are privately owned and are not open to the public.Although the area around the main enclosure that is open to the public retains its curved shape, there are no visible remnants of the strong fortress that lasted for three months despite the large army of the Toyotomi clan. However, there are plenty of attractions nearby, such as the Egawa Family Residence (Ruins of the Nirayama Magistrate's Office), a National Important Cultural Property, the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace Ruins, a Japanese Heritage Site, and Ganjoju-in Temple, which houses the National Treasure Unkei Buddha, making it a convenient place to stop by. It is located a few minutes from Ohito Station. There were a lot of cars parked in the parking lot, and I thought it was busy, but it turned out to be people visiting the nursery school next door. 😅 Climb the stone steps and the sounds of birds🐦️ inside the temple grounds give you a relaxing impression. ☺️ I thought, “This is it”😁, and headed to the first place I wanted to see. 🐟️😆 It's a strange sight even though it's not near the sea. 😲 When I went up the stone steps to the front of the shrine and asked for a red stamp, I was guided to the shrine office, where a stone statue of the first priest of the Kano family was enshrined. 😲 I felt comfortable visiting the shrine because of the kind reception. 🙏☺️

If you're on the hunt for a delightful pasta experience, look no further than ぱすた屋REB (Rebu). This charming eatery offers an array of dishes that will tantalize your taste buds. One standout is their Ishigaki salt peperoncino, served generously on an extra-large plate—so delicious that you'll find yourself devouring every last bite! The accompanying Caesar salad is equally impressive, packed with a variety of fresh ingredients and dressed to perfection.
Fantastic Italian restaurant. Great prices, good portion sizes, amazing taste. Fresh and flavorful. The staff were also very kind and welcoming to foreigners. This little restaurant stands out as one of my best memories of my time in Izu.

Soba noodle shop
Asahiya, nestled in the charming Izunagaoka area, is a delightful soba restaurant that captures the essence of traditional Japanese dining. After a refreshing drink at Sugiyama Shoten, visitors can indulge in an array of delicious meals here.
Suddenly decided to stop at a hotel nearby, we didn't want to add 10000/person for diner, so we chose this place as we saw it on the way... Amazing discovery! We took the shirasuten bukkake soba (seasonal, cold soba, 1050) , sakuraebi kaki age (warm soba, 1300) , wafū karē (800) and soba gaki (900) The menu is only written in Japanese, almost no pictures. The staff doesn't seem to speak any english. The service is not very smiley or anything but honestly didn't matter to us as we understand it's mostly frequented by locals. They also deliver. Because of that, some people were refused even when some tables were empty as they were too busy. Be warned.
