Botanical garden
Villa Carlotta is a stunning 17th-century villa located on the shores of Lake Como, near the Grand Hotel Tremezzo. The villa boasts beautiful gardens and a remarkable botanical park with an impressive variety of rhododendrons and azaleas. Commissioned by Marquis Giorgio II Clerici, it features a neoclassical style with works by renowned artists such as Canova, Tiepolo, and Hayez.
Took the train to Varenna, then the boat and got off at Lenno. From Lenno we hiked to the villa following the lake shore (approx 4 km) This is a great hike, easy to make and not exhaustive. The only caveat is that there is a section of the hike that follows the road. Visited on Monday. Started with the gardens as there was a storm cloud on the lake and wanted to cover the gardens and move inside if the rain moved onto the place. The gardens are extensive and beautiful. The rhododendrons were in peak bloom (mid May). The Villa itself is also impressive, well curated and maintained. Overall a great small museum as a time capsule ot a different era. The cafeteria has gelato, panini and excellent beer. What else do you need beyond that. We entered the museum at 3:00 pm and left just after 6:pm. The combined ticket for the gardens and the villa is €15/p. Good value.

Nice museum with several exhibits. Also has gorgeous views of lake como. There is also a restaurant to grab some lunch. It was not crowded when we visited also there was no line to buy tickets. Worthwhile visiting the villa.
Jayasimha N — Google review
An absolute architectural, botanical and historical marvel of the last 500 years. The grounds of the villa are absolutely gorgeous - fountains sculptures, and perfectly manicured floral heaven. The garden is truly remarkable with how much variety of plants there are and also the way it's been maintained. For the building itself, nothing short of extraordinary - the design and architecture is impressive. There is so much history and craftsmanship behind this place.
Alexander M — Google review
Inside and out Villa Carlotta was a joy to visit. We loved the art work inside the villa. Be sure o look up as many of the rooms are adorned with frescos and or reliefs. The grounds are a botanical wonder with species brought in from around the world.
John V — Google review
I have no words. Grand, classy, green. Bamboo plants, very tropical. The great beauty of a sea of over 150 species of plants. All this is combined with the view of Lake Como, which is open from almost every point of Villa Carlotta. Very good restaurant.
Vladimir G — Google review
Must see! Great place to visit, beatiful inside, many sculpture, paintings few rooms with furniture with very great conditions. Amaizing garden around, it takes 2-3 hours to visit and see all villa and garden. Beautyful view from balcony for Como lake.
Arkadiusz K — Google review
Villa Carlotta was beautiful (the villa, gardens, and views) and informative. I decided to get the audio guide as well and I'm very happy I did. It made walking through the gardens more immersive and, at some points, even had me emotional. The gardens can be strenuous in certain points from multiple steps and steeper climbs but the shade provided a lot of nice cover from the hot Italian sun. Additionally, the property has three different routes available: whole, quick, and wheelchair accessible. The Villa itself is full of history and allows you to see artworks and historical preservation. Will be a historical place I visit again next time I am in Lake Como.
Sam H — Google review
Great place to visite. We even met a nice photographer who offer us free service. The villa is very BIG. Take your time to visit. Maybe 3 hours for everything. Most of the visit part is in the garden. They also have absolutely nice views.

Villa del Balbianello is a captivating 18th-century villa located in Lenno, on the picturesque Lake Como. Originally built by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini, it has been home to various wealthy families and notable figures throughout history. The villa boasts a splendid loggia offering enchanting views and is adorned with breathtaking frescoes and charming gardens. Its former owner, adventurer Guido Monzino, enriched it with an exclusive art collection and artifacts from his global expeditions.
Famous from Hollywood-movies this gorgeous villa and surrounding gardens are a must visit when visiting Lake Como. We took the guides tour inside the Villa which was very fascinating. It was very hot and crowded in gardens however, so would recommend to visit off-season and make sure to buy your tickets in advance.
Victor B — Google review
A beautiful estate with a fascinating walk to and from the site. Definitely touristy but absolutely worth the visit. Be aware: Google’s “mostly flat” description is misleading—you’ll need to tackle some uphill sections, so bring good shoes.
Alexander S — Google review
Very beautiful and pristine villa. Everything is very manicured and clean. It is about a 2km walk from the Leno ferry terminal. Definitely some gradients so wear comfortable shoes. This villa is home to famous scenes in Star Wars and also James Bond Casino Royale.
Falene C — Google review
We’ve photographed several pre-wedding shoots at Villa del Balbianello, and every single time it feels like a dream. The views over Lake Como are breathtaking, and the villa itself is pure magic. In spring, the wisteria blooms beautifully across the villa, creating an even more enchanting atmosphere. Every corner is photogenic, from the iconic terrace overlooking the lake to the lush gardens. It’s truly one of the most incredible locations in Italy for a photoshoot.
Peter P — Google review
Such an incredible place to visit if you are going to Lago di Como, I would suggest buying the tickets in advance so you can skip the wait, bring comfortable shoes, I wouldn’t recommend heels or anything like that if you do want to enjoy the most hidden places here. Very clean, it takes about 2-3 hours so see and enjoy most of the villa! Is a must!
Karen A — Google review
One word – magnificent. I recommend buying tickets in advance to avoid waiting. We arrived at 10 a.m. and waited about 20 minutes in line. The villa opens at 10:00 a.m. They allow only a limited number of visitors inside, which is great because it’s not overcrowded. The ticket costs €14.
Natalia V — Google review
Beautiful Villa... Looked stunning in Casino Royale! In person so much more!!! Tour is a must do to understand the last owner.. ended up buying the book about him. A must visit if in the area.
Paul J — Google review
Magnificent experience. No words to describe the views here! Do not miss this on your visit to Como. There is about a 25 min walk of up and down driveway (some paved & some gravel), might be hard for some who are not able to walk far distances. The walk is well worth the work however!

The location offers easy access to nearby attractions such as Villa Carlotta, Villa Balbianello, and scenic walking routes like Greenway del Lago.
Very nice view when you get to the main chapel. The ride there can be difficult for some people. Going there with kids would be an adventure!! It’s a bit hard to see what is inside the chapel on the ascent because it’s a bit dark. The main chapel is fairly small but very beautiful. Again, the main purpose of this ride is to get a nice panoramic view of lake Como. You can see the city of Bellagio from there.

It serves as an ideal venue for weddings, accommodating up to 130 guests with the option of marquee rental.

Villa Sola Cabiati is the embodiment of Italianità—a place where heritage, artistry, and romance are seamlessly woven into its magnificent walls. While the villa itself is a masterpiece of elegance, what truly sets it apart is its impeccable staff. Their dedication to preserving and sharing the villa’s legacy is remarkable; they operate at the highest levels of luxury hospitality, yet with a warmth and passion that make every guest feel truly welcome. The Stucco Room is among the most breathtaking spaces I have ever stepped into—an exquisite showcase of intricate craftsmanship and timeless beauty. Having visited many Italian villas, I can confidently say that Villa Sola Cabiati is one of my absolute favorites. It is grand yet intimate, majestic yet deeply inviting. From the very moment you step onto the grounds, you are transported into another world—a world of refined beauty, history, and la dolce vita. Every corner of this storied villa is a tribute to artistry, heritage, luxury, and the effortless charm of Italy. Here I photographed S&D’s wedding, which was an unforgettable experience. To this day, their gallery remains one of my all-time favorites—a testament to the magic that unfolds within these walls.

The property is impeccably maintained and you can tell they take pride in keeping everything in excellent condition. The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between elegant and relaxing - you feel pampered without any stuffiness. The food throughout our stay was consistently good, whether at breakfast or dinner, with fresh ingredients and thoughtful preparation. Service was attentive without being intrusive, and staff seemed genuinely interested in making sure we had a great experience. The setting is just magical - waking up to those lake views and being able to enjoy them throughout the day from various spots on the property. Everything about the place encourages you to slow down and enjoy the moment. This is exactly what a luxury lake hotel should be - beautiful, comfortable, and memorable.

Absolutely beautiful hotel. The room was wonderful (corner terrace suite), and service at the main restaurant and pool restaurant was good. I docked two stars because the service at the lobby outside bar was absolutely horrible. We experienced this two nights in a row, and then did not attempt to go back after that. Also the spa was great in terms of facilities, however we were not offered towels, robes, or a locker which we felt was very odd. Unfortunately overall the service was a miss for us. When paying this much for a hotel you want to feel like a valued guest.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime, unforgettable experience. Upon arrival, we were upgraded to a Suite as it was our honeymoon. The concierge team warmly welcomed us, and when we opened our room door, they had our wedding song playing, accompanied by champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, sweets, a framed picture of us, and hand-written notes. It was the most thoughtful gesture. The staff goes ABOVE and BEYOND every moment the stay and it is truly extraordinary. Every minute we spent at the hotel was heaven. The suite, view, amenities, pools, spa, gardens, etc were absolutely stunning, luxe, and we couldn't get enough. Everything was personalized and we felt extremely well cared for. We had an OUTSTANDING dinner (tip: get the risotto and beef wellington!) and the most incredible breakfast buffet we had ever seen. Our server, Diogo, blew us away with his elegance, knowledge and care - he made our dining experiences magical. We are so grateful to our travel advisor, Mo and the hotel team - we are counting the days down until we can come back to the GHT!!! N&S

(Translated by Google) The building, which is located within a private property, cannot be visited, but its shapes can be seen driving along the provincial road towards Como. With a single nave, with an irregular layout, it ends with a low apse engraved with three splayed single-lancet windows. The façade is devoid of decorations and moved only by the monolithic architrave of the portal and a small cross-shaped window. It is made with stones and pebbles. A female Benedictine monastery was built next to the church, abandoned in the 17th century. At the end of the eighteenth century, the mothers of S. Colombano di Como sold their assets to P. Venini, owner of Villa Giulia. The descendants demolished the monastery in 1804 to create the avenue that led directly from the property to the lake. Too bad it can't be visited! Beautiful villa with awesome picture opportunities along the lakeside. The garden is very beautiful. Staff is great. We had tickets and were standing in the line, upon showing them to staff they let us through the side. The staff at the museum was also great, showing us what the best route was etc. parking on the other side of the street is good (for Lake Como standards :))

The gardens are absolutely stunning and the views of Lake Como are unreal — definitely a must-visit for photo lovers! Dress cute, this place is made for dreamy pics. We bought tickets online and skipped the line. The villa interior isn’t super impressive, but the outdoor beauty makes it 100% worth it.

Easily one of the most beautiful places I've been. There was a crowd (we visited in September), but it was manageable and didn't bother us too much. Entry was quick and efficient and for 7 euro (13 for regular entry but still) you get access to arguably the most gorgeous views you would have seen in your life.

This is truely a lovely villa. The setting on the north end of Varenna is perfectly quiet. Property is between the road and Lake Como allowing for a magical stroll along the water. The property seemed a little worn. After a couple of days of train the paths suffered from large puddles making passage distracting on some portions. Other features were closed for repairs. The house was a treat and more intimate than some of the other villas we visited. Be sure to visit the exhibit room under the where you'll get your tickets and enter property. They have a fine audio and visual show that allows you to chose topics on the family and property history of the villa as well as the garden and it's flora. We visited in the second half of September but I can imagine Villa Monastero in blume is just amazing.

nice place. if you want to walk through the garden, it is worth spending 2 hours. there is a queue at the popular places to take pictures and you can't even look at it if you don't wait. difficult with a stroller. It's worth going in the morning, there's no line, there are fewer people

One word – magnificent. I recommend buying tickets in advance to avoid waiting. We arrived at 10 a.m. and waited about 20 minutes in line. The villa opens at 10:00 a.m. They allow only a limited number of visitors inside, which is great because it’s not overcrowded. The ticket costs €10

This is the most beautiful place I have ever been on Earth and I mean that. Wow just wow. The gardens are incredibly stunning and well kept and I probably took hundreds of photos here. Do not skip this place if you are in Varenna and spend some time here I promise it’s worth it!!! So much gorgeous scenery it felt like I was inside a pinterest board. If you are walking here from where the ferry drops you off make sure to walk along the path right next to the water with the red fence for some of the best views of the lake and then at the end head up one of the streets/stairs to get to the villa entrance.

We had a fabulous day at Villa Monastero, where every inch felt intentionally designed and beautifully maintained. The atmosphere was serene and tranquil, with stunning architecture all around—the elegant pillars, soaring arches, and vibrant flower displays made it a feast for the eyes. We visited in mid-June, when the temperature reached 34°C, yet there were plenty of shaded spots to pause and enjoy the scenery. One of our favourite moments was sitting at a picnic bench under the shade, having some snacks while taking in the spectacular lake views. The café on site offers refreshments, and there is one toilet for each gender. Both were beautifully prepared and spotless, which was a welcome detail. The combination of breathtaking views, peaceful atmosphere, and architectural beauty made Villa Monastero a truly memorable experience. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, breathe, and simply enjoy the beauty of Lake Como. Kids go free

The Church of San Lorenzo is a striking example of eclectic architecture, with its reconstruction spanning from the 18th to the 20th century. The church features an octagonal central plan and is adorned with two-colored horizontal bands on the exterior, including the bell tower. Its facade showcases elements of neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque styles, such as the portal, rose window, terracotta arches, and gugliotti.
As a wedding photographer you can’t wish something more from a church. Big, nice light, enough space for take what photos do you want. The stairs ... absolutely fantastic !!!

Nestled in the small fraction of Cadenabbia, Grand Hotel Cadenabbia offers a refined villa experience with airy rooms and suites that overlook the stunning Lake Como. The hotel boasts an outdoor pool and dining facilities, providing guests with a taste of dolce vita fantasies. Its majestic location on the rocks emerging from the lake offers breathtaking views. The interiors exude coziness while showcasing mementoes from past centuries, creating a charming ambiance.
After reading some of the reviews we were a bit hesitant to stay here. However, after spending 4 days here we were very pleasantly surprised. The staff was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. The pool and rooftop terrace were beautiful. The location was perfect for exploring the northern end the lake with easy access to the ferry. The rooms were simple and a little dated, but the lake view was well worth it. Only feedback would be the inconsistency of the hours of service for lunch on the rooftop. We were told at check in lunch was served daily 2:00- 6:00pm however both days we went to eat during those times, they were not serving lunch. Otherwise, we had a fantastic stay and would highly recommend!

We stay a few nights in the Grand Hotel Cadenabbia on Lake Como years ago, it was spectacular! Although we did not eat at the hotel, so I cannot comment on the restaurant but the room was spacious and clean. The Hotel had a story of Old World Charm about it. A place to film a Movie. It is the perfect location on the Lake with the most amazing views of Lake Como and the Swiss Alps. Not far from the hotel we hired a private boat, it was a touristy kind of thing to do, as we cruised Lake Como sightseeing , our guide was informative and it was a beautiful day to be on the water. We also took a larger boat to surrounding areas, there was so much History. You could walk everywhere. I am not saying anything negative about our stay but When you have a perfect location, everything else about the Hotel should be top notch. I’m not saying it wasn’t, but one would expect the best , in everything, from Staff Uniforms, cleanliness, fresh flowers , the mattress, pillows, sheets, towels, the extra special shampoos available in the boutique, the memorable 5 star restaurants, the chefs, servers and kitchen staff, Bar and pool side. Not to ignore special items available to purchase in the Boutiques. For me, my few days felt like an amazing destination. A special spot to stay a while longer, a place an artist could absorb the scenery or write a book. It was The Perfect Place!

This was a great hotel in a perfect location if you plan to hop on ferries and travel around Lake Como. Like every other review here, yes the hotel has an older classic look. However it is a beautiful looking hotel and the room we stayed in was clean and pretty spacious. The staff is helpful and the concierge at the front is amazing! I highly recommend going to the concierge for any questions about reservations and recommendations because she was able to set all of them up for us (I.e. dinner, boat trips, ferry times etc). The pool and bar area is wonderful with beautiful views of the lake. If you have breakfast included just a heads up it is a very basic buffet style. Overall a wonderful stay and I would return/recommend to anyone.
Victoria E — Google review
I'm putting this review on because there are so many mixed reviews. Overall its a decent hotel. Needs some improvements yes, but overall the breakfast was really good, service was amazing, and location isn't too far from the ferries. If you are looking for a clean hotel, great views, and nice staff this is the place to stay
Ryan E — Google review
A very old hotel, but i picked this knowing and decided to take a chance. I enjoyed a comfortable stay, great location at centre of the lake with close access to ferry ports and almost next door to Villa Carlotta. The hotel lobby is very grand. My room gave me a nice view of the lake . The hotel has a beautiful pool area and terrace where you can enjoy some drinks while overlooking the lake. Several restaurants within walking distance for dinner and staff A+ However it does need to be heavily renovated. I spoke to the manager and they said renovations will probably start next year. The breakfast selection could have been better. Very nice overall experience
Eric S — Google review
The rooms are a little simplistic but the view 100% makes up for that! We spent our time soaking up the sun on the balcony and admiring the beautiful lake. The staff were very friendly, recommended nice restaurants and helped us book a taxi to our next location. The pistachio and chocolate croissants mixed with the view of the lake at breakfast was unforgettable!!
Michelle C — Google review
The hotel has a beautiful pool area and terrace where you can enjoy some drinks while overlooking the lake. However, the building itself needs some upgrade like the super slow lifts (which you can't rely on to take you to the right floor) and the rooms. We had no working air conditioning in our room so it was difficult to sleep and the walls and ceiling had dirty marks on them? The hotel does have potential though cause it is a huge property with a great view of the lake.
Ivy D — Google review
This place was fabulous. Good room size for Italy, a little small for American size rooms. The location is perfect in between 2 ferry locations & the view is fabulous. The staff was great as well. The technology is a little dated as you can see from the picture of the AC system, but overall a great place.

Villa Melzi D'Eril is a must-visit attraction in Bellagio, known for its stunning gardens designed in the early 1800s by architect Luigi Canonica and botanist Luigi Villoresi. The English-style gardens boast exotic trees, camellias, rhododendrons, and azaleas, as well as a picturesque Japanese pond with water lilies and cedar trees.

Great place with only one mixed toilet facility. For the ticket prices you only see the gardens, the museums are a stretch. You pay for the views of the lake which you can see everywhere. The gardens are beautiful. Keep in mind that you cannot enter the villa itself, however when visiting Bellagio, and would like a quiet change of pace, this is the place to go. The ferry's leaving Bellagio to Menaggio or Varenna are very long (at least it was in mid/end of May so who knows how much more busier in July- Aug), long, so plan accordingly if you need to get to another place for a specific time.

Historical landmark
Fucilazione di Benito Mussolini is a memorial located in Giulino di Mezzegra, near Lenno, where Benito Mussolini and Claretta Petacci were executed on April 28, 1945. The site has historical significance and is worth visiting despite some controversies surrounding the execution. However, accessing the memorial from Tremezzo can be challenging due to the lack of a footpath. Nevertheless, it's a poignant place to pay respects to this significant historical event.
Memorial for the execution of Benito Mussolini and his wife Claretta Petacci. It seems there are controversies about their execution as the informational board has a sticker in the word "executing". Worth visiting it, though.
Alexandre B — Google review
Very emotional to think what happened there, it is important to remember the war.
Steve P — Google review
A leader whose ideology shaped and guided a generation from 7 to 70. He was captured in a German convoy seeking refuge in Switzerland and later held in a farmhouse. Less than 24 hours after his capture, rebels suddenly stopped their car in front of the house and demanded he get out. He and his lover were taken from the vehicle, taken away, and shot dead. A statesman and a civilian killed without trial. While his execution is unacceptable, this is a tragic event.
Hetz N — Google review
Very strange place, it’s a piece of history.. a little memorial to the events that took place here!
Pieter-Jan E — Google review
Several plaques and an information board by the roadside marking the location where Benito Mussolini and Claretta Petacci were executed. It is around 20 minutes walk from the lakeside uphill (there is a footpath but some of the way you walk along the road). The location is along a quiet and unassuming residential street. ✅Good points: Interesting for those interested in history, and important not to forget the events of WW2. Walkable from the town and Lenno feeryport. Good way to spend time while waiting for the Lenno ferry after seeing the Villa Balbianello in the morning. Thirty seconds along the road is a stone picnic table with a tap where you can rest in the shade. 👎🏻Potential drawbacks: Not much to see other than a few plaques by the roadside, can be seen in less than ten minutes. Some may find this a tiring walk uphill away from the lake in the heat of the day.

My family and I (12 total) stayed here for 7 days and had an incredible time. The Villa and the views of the lake are amazing and the staff goes above and beyond. We had breakfast prepared daily in the Villa which surpassed any 5 star hotel. First Class.

We stayed a couple of beautiful September days at Villa Molli. The house, the views, the place were exceptional - even better then the pictures... But the people of Molli where the most special, the excellent cooking, the service and friendliness.... Note: the house is of such a great design and high standard that we would immediately want to move in... We had a truly phenomenal experience! Thx Molli Family!

Villa
Villa La Perla in Bellagio is a stunning retreat that offers breathtaking views of the lake, making it an ideal getaway for relaxation. The villa boasts a beautifully designed interior and is conveniently located, ensuring guests have everything they need for a comfortable stay. With a lovely pool area and an expansive garden featuring a charming pond filled with goldfish, it's perfect for unwinding in nature. Guests are welcomed warmly by Irina, who provides helpful tips on local dining and activities.
Stunning view from a slightly off the beaten path villa. You will need a small car or electric bikes to really take advantage of everything the home has to offer as it's a significant walk to stores and bus service can be late or over crowded.

(Translated by Google) The villa is very good and very large; the view, magnificent. Facilities sometimes leaving a little to be desired: capricious cooker. Downside: the house is difficult to access by car because the path is narrow and very steep. We burned our clutch when we arrived and didn't dare park the car in the house parking lot. Being accompanied by older people, getting around was quite complicated since the paths leading to the center of Bellagio are in fact stairs or the main road, very busy and without sidewalk. So we had to go back and forth on foot and by car, especially since the parking lots are crowded in season. In addition, it was difficult to get around by public transport: buses every two hours, tourist train stopping around 6:30 p.m., road too dangerous on foot in the dark.

(Translated by Google) The house itself was very nice, but unfortunately we had a very negative experience upon arrival. When we arrived on Thursday evening, the house had not been cleaned after the previous guests. There were dirty bed linen and wet towels everywhere, and it was completely out of the question to stay in those conditions. We contacted the host immediately, but were told that laundry could not be done until the next day, and that we would have to find a hotel ourselves. After this, the host became unavailable and did not respond to inquiries. The house was not completely cleaned until late in the day on Friday, and even then there was still dust and dirt in several places - it was clear that it had not been done thoroughly. We have subsequently tried to enter into dialogue with the host to find a solution for compensation for this, but it has been very difficult. Overall, a frustrating and disappointing start to the stay, which characterized large parts of the holiday.

Eugenio P — Google review
(Translated by Google) Immediately afterwards, upstream from the state road, Villa Meier is the central building of the vast property established starting in 1918 by Roberto Meier, a Swiss entrepreneur who became rich from the cotton trade at the time of the First World War. The task of renovating the nineteenth-century Villa Ortensia and constructing a series of accessory buildings was entrusted to Pietro Lingeri, a twenty-year-old architect from Tremezzo, destined to become one of the masters of Rationalism. The property is now largely public and used as a municipal park. The manor house has essentially maintained its original appearance, except for the addition of two volumes facing upstream and towards the parish house. Not far away, in a private area, there are some buildings - the villa, the greenhouse and the garage. – expanded by Lingeri. At the upper border of the property, a spectacular architectural backdrop acts as a backdrop to the tennis court and allows you to mask the difference in height that marks the edge of the land. Among the smaller buildings, the circular pavilion used as a kennel is notable. The lakeside portion of the property is occupied by the park dedicated to the memory of Teresio Olivelli, gold medal for military valour, although the traditional name of Meier Park is still in current use. Extract from the Guide «Discovering Tremezzina» (Francesco Soletti, Edizioni New Press 2017).
