Villa Manzoni is a neoclassical building situated in the Caleotto district of downtown Lecco. It serves as a literary museum dedicated to the renowned Italian writer, poet, and playwright Alessandro Manzoni. Once the summer residence of the Manzoni family, it now houses original furnishings and exhibits that trace his life and works. Visitors can explore different rooms that provide insights into his biography and career.
We decided to visit this villa because it was raining, however we were pleasantly surprised. The author’s biography is fully explained across different rooms so you can get a better sense of his character, life and career. We also loved the cinema part at the end of the museum - it was a very different, kind of unique experience to see a film adaptation from 1941!

We got in with the Fai Associate discount, they have a nice archive of adaptations for the “Betrothed” and a mini cinema with vintage chairs but honestly it felt a bit empty.

Basilica Prepositurale di San Nicolò is a stunning neoclassical church featuring a Corinthian columned façade and an impressive 315-foot neo-Gothic tower. Inside, visitors can admire the beautiful interior adorned with pink marble columns and exquisite frescoes by Giotto. The Campanile San Nicolo, also known as Campanile di Lecco, stands at 96 meters (315 feet) tall, making it one of the tallest towers in Europe.
A beautiful church near deserted when I visited. The interior decoration is quite a contrast to that of Lecco more generally. I think you are allowed to climb the tower, but there was no indication of how this was possible when I visited. Check it out if you are in the area.

We were there last week to hear the Bellagio Festival Orchestra. Sadly the acoustics were so lively it was virtually impossible to enjoy the music, so we got to know more about the Basilica. Cards around the best parts describe the origin and history in Italian and English. I particularly like knowing that one of the chapels dates to the Fourteenth Century and remnants of frescoes are still there, but the rest of the building date from the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries. Most of the marble appears to have been painted to look like the real thing and done very well resulting in a warmth lacking in many churches.

Castle
Castello dell'Innominato is a 14th-century hilltop castle located in Vercurago, offering sweeping views of the town and the lake. It was once the residence of Innominato from The Betrothed. Accessible by train or bus from Lecco, followed by a short hike, this destination provides panoramic views. While it's a steep climb and not suitable for those with health issues, visitors can still enjoy picnics within the remaining walls of the castle.
Great place if you want to go and do some exercise and enjoy the astonishing views. It is the perfect plan for a Sunday afternoon. There’s free parking around the church, and from there you can make your way up. If you’re feeling hungry, I’ll suggest to try La Trattoria La Rocca, you won’t be disappointed.

(Translated by Google) Of fourteenth-century origin, the tower is probably the oldest building in Lecco. The highest part of the tower was built during the fifteenth century. The tower is all that remains of the triangular-shaped city walls, an integral part of the military fortress. The castle was part of the latter, located in a central position and close to the lake, which was the main entrance gate to the village open towards Milan. It was demolished by Joseph II between 1782 and 1784. On its left side there was a guardhouse, from which one could access the staircase that led to the bastion of the pier, where the sentry box was located, while on the right there was a large warehouse as well as a courtyard for the soldiers. After the restoration of 1816, by the Lecco architect Giuseppe Bovara, the tower was used as a prison (a use recovered from the time of the Spanish domination of the Duchy of Milan) and, starting in 1932, after a further restoration, it was entrusted by the State to the Municipality of Lecco which initially established the Museum of the Risorgimento and Resistance of the city, to later convert it into a venue for temporary exhibitions of the Civic Museums and the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Lecco. On the ground floor, the guardhouse and some stone cannonballs are still visible (Original) Di origine trecentesca, la torre è probabilmente l'edificio lecchese più antico.

(Translated by Google) This is the only part of the defensive walls still visible, built in the fourteenth century by Azzone Visconti to fortify the village. The walls also incorporated the castle near the lake, of which the Visconti Tower can be admired, even if half hidden by various buildings. The village was also strengthened during the dominion of the Sforza and, subsequently, until the early sixteenth century, the period to which the bastion, which was located at the beginning of the current Via Bovara, dates back. The Spanish, towards the middle of the 16th century, strengthened the fortifications to adapt it to new warfare techniques with the use of artillery. The walls of Lecco were demolished at the end of the eighteenth century, when, under Austrian rule, the castle of Lecco was sold to private individuals. I was pleased to notice that this area has been enhanced in recent years and presented to the attention of tourists with interesting information panels. The black iron shape that portrays Azzone Visconti is a bit minimalist and not very nice to look at.

Corso Bergamo, 13 is a vibrant spot in Lecco that offers a unique experience for visitors. While you can certainly take a dip in the local waters, it’s not the ideal destination for those seeking a tranquil beach day. Instead, there are numerous nearby beaches that cater perfectly to sunbathers and swimming enthusiasts alike. Casa di Lucia Mondella is a charming and authentic Italian restaurant tucked away in the streets of Lecco. Despite being a bit hidden, it's popular among locals and visitors alike. The historic house, dating back to the 1200s, adds to its old-fashioned charm. The service is friendly and attentive, with staff members offering helpful recommendations. The food is described as delicious and made from high-quality ingredients, with homemade dishes that showcase traditional Italian flavors.
Great old fashioned restaurant, in a historic house, the original details still present from the 1200! The service was so kind and helpful, the waiter (who I regret not getting his name) was so funny and patient with us. The food was just delightful. Hearthy with the best quality ingredients, and every part of every dish was made from scratch in house. It's a little hidden, but so well worth finding.

Great food. Big selection of wine. Small variety of dishes with great quality! The staff are super nice and welcoming. I recommend the terrace in the evening and the Missoltino fish anti pasti!

Very nice authentic restaurant, somewhere hidden in the streets of Lecco. Though many people know to find this place, it was quite crowded. The food tasted amazing, as you can expect from an Italian restaurant. The waiter was very friendly and the service was good! If you’re coming here by car, the parking is terrible - so try to park as nearby as you can and walk a bit. I definitely recommend this restaurant! As a last tip, be careful to drink the coffee, it was mega hot.

A truly authentic Italian experience. Well off the beaten path and worth the effort to get here. Excellent in every way.

If you're looking for an authentic Italian trattoria with home style cooking this place is great. Super friendly and with an amazing wine selection I'd definitely go again. Worth asking for a wine recommendation. These guys know their stuff.

We had lunch at this place and even though it was hard to find, it was totally worth it! The food was very delicious (we recommend the Paccheri con ragu), the staff is extremely friendly and the restaurant is so cozy and authentic. Overall, an amazing experience we will never forget!

Palazzo Belgiojoso - Polo Museale is one of the main attractions in Lecco, Italy. It offers a mix of historical and interactive experiences suitable for visitors of all ages. The palace features a fascinating archeology museum showcasing the area's settlements, with helpful staff providing translated descriptions. Additionally, there is a natural history museum with well-preserved taxidermy animals. Visitors can also enjoy a pleasant playground and benches in the palace garden after exploring the exhibits.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here. The archeology museum showcased the range of settlement in the area and staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Dispute the exhibit displays being in Italian they did offer translated cards with a brief description of the different epochs along with a highlighted description of artifacts of note. The natural history museum was also fantastic. I have been to a number of these in the past and the taxidermist animals most often look worse for wear. These specimens were very well cared for and displayed and there was a vast range. Also, there were specimens that could be touched so that those with sight difficulty could also enjoy the displays. I really appreciated this addition even as a seeing person. Outside there are more artifacts in the attached park. I just want to say again, that the staff working there was so amazing and supportive and made me feel very honored and welcome to see the displays. Entree fee was very reasonable.

Entry was free. Very interesting exhibits of animals and birds in the first, and archeology in the basement. Almost all text is in Italian, and there wasn't an internet connection so I couldn't translate the texts to English. Next time I am in Lecco, I hope to go back with a translation app installed.

(Translated by Google) Unfortunately, the times found on the Internet do not correspond to the actual ones. It may also be a "Museum Centre" but if the timetables don't allow a visit for tourists arriving in the city then what's the point? It was written online that there were all-day hours but that's not the case. From what we could see while walking inside there was certainly a lot to see, the Palace was closed as was the Planetarium; in the Park, quite beautiful, we saw something very interesting: a sort of Lapidary from the Fort of Fuentes, an important sculpture that once bordered a window, a gigantic press, various remains of old machinery; we didn't have time to return at other times/days.

We had an excellent English speaking guide for most of our visit. He was very knowledgeable especially about the birds and animals locally. The exhibits were described in Italian but not always any English translation. We were lent a tablet which was informative with English words. Outside press was huge!

It's a shame that the rooms are closed due to uneven flooring (felines, lariosaurus and minerals), but the remaining ones, dedicated to ichthyofauna and avifauna, are interesting, especially for the presence of touchable models and stations from which to listen to the sounds of the animals. Historical museum. Very small, but interesting exhibition of photos and documentation regarding the fascist period, the Second World War and the immediate post-war period to understand/remember what life must have been/was like in those periods. Archaeological Museum. Varied exhibition of archaeological finds found in the Lecco area over a time period from the first hominids (6000 BC) to the Greek era. The possibility of touching some models of tools and vases of the time is interesting. Museo archeologico.

The historical section was also really nice! I highly recommend a visit! The staff was very friendly! And after the tour, there's also a lovely playground with nice shaded benches in the palace garden! (Translated by Google) We came with our children for a trip to Manzoni's places... I only have one word: shame. Alessandro Manzoni is turning in his grave at the disgusting way in which the people of Lecco dishonor the memory of the novel read by all Italians. No care, no valorisation, Lucia's house in ruins, the tabernacle of the bravoes devastated by spray cans. Not to mention Lecco in general, cemented over by horrendous enormous eco-monsters and transformed into the ugliest town in the world. Total disappointment. Delusione totale.

(Translated by Google) If you come to Lecco to visit the "Manzonian places", keep in mind that there is no pedestrian street, no marked route, no facilities for crossing the city to reach this particular place which today, in fact, no longer exists. I recommend Villa Manzoni, the only place worth visiting internally, even if externally defaced by a shopping centre. Here what you will find is a marble slab from the municipality. Difficult to spot. Much more striking, on the front side, is the tacky display of small house models with the inevitable seven dwarfs.
