Modern European restaurant
Restaurant
Kampo by Chef Julio Pereira is a modern restaurant with outdoor seating and an open kitchen, offering sustainable and elevated dishes. Located in Funchal, Portugal, the restaurant provides a unique dining experience with a focus on seafood and meatier options. Chef Julio Pereira's creative menu includes fish charcuterie boards, braised tuna with razor clam rice, grouper carpaccio with nori, as well as other innovative dishes.
We booked the restaurant and very happy with the service. We had restricted vegetarian dietary and the restaurant made our dining experience very smooth and attention to detail. We had mushrooms, seaweed rice and grill vegetables for our vegetarian friends. We also had the Ox belly tacos, Tbone steaks and chips on the side. All of our dishes are delicious with Dark chocolate desserts. Thank you for your lovely service. We had an amazing time.

This upmarket restaurant offers both à la carte and a chef’s sharing menu. We opted for the latter. The tuna course was a bit on the strong, fishy side for our taste and, unfortunately, contained a small scale. The second dish was pleasant, though the many components made it hard to identify each element. The absolute highlight of the evening was the oxtail – beautifully cooked, with a rich, flavorful sauce, well-prepared vegetables, and smooth mashed potatoes. Truly excellent! Dessert combined white chocolate, passionfruit, brownie, and a black olive sauce. The olive pairing wasn’t to our taste, though that may be personal preference. If the dishes were refined a touch more and the presentation elevated, this place could really shine. Service was friendly and attentive, the pacing of the dinner was spot-on, and the atmosphere was lovely. 📍 Tip: Situated right in the center of Funchal. If you’d like to explore it for yourself, make a reservation in advance.

I’m absolutely thrilled! A must-visit place for dinner. The whole chain of these restaurants is great, but we chose this one for our last evening in Madeira — and it was the perfect decision. There were five of us, and my friend and I ordered the “To Share” menu for two — six dishes for €98. I can’t even describe how delicious and satisfying it was. Each dish was unique in presentation, balance, and taste. For that price, such a tasting menu for two is truly exceptional. Thank you for the perfect ending to our vacation!
Vladislava L — Google review
Incredible food, great value for money and fantastic service. Really recommend Kampo! Absolutely loved the steak tartar, the oxtail tacos and the oxtail ravioli! Our waiter was so helpful, teaching us about Madeira wine and giving us recommendations for what would pair well with our food! Such a great experience, would definitely go back again!
Danielle T — Google review
My partner and I visited this restaurant three times within a single week — and for good reason. The overall experience was consistently excellent. I ordered the beef burger with foie gras, which was outstanding: perfectly cooked, rich in flavor, and beautifully balanced. As a starter, we shared a tuna tartare that was truly exceptional — fresh, refined, and expertly seasoned. When we first arrived without a reservation, we were asked to wait at the bar. The host handled the situation with remarkable professionalism and kindness, and we were seated within about twenty minutes. The cocktails were also excellent, crafted with real attention to detail. Overall, an exceptional dining experience — both in terms of food and service. Highly recommended
Luca H — Google review
The place was just okay. It was quite noisy, and the steak was overcooked (asked for medium, but it came closer to well done), and the meat quality could be better. The ravioli was actually very good. Overall, it’s not a bad place — worth visiting once, but not something I’d rush back to.
David B — Google review
We were sat at the bar top where the chefs prepare the food which was amazing. It was great to see how much compassion the workers have into making and preparing the food. The food itself was pretty good. We got the dry aged ribeye to split. We asked for medium, but came out a bit more rare, it was very good either way. The steak came with fries, a tomato and onion salad, and pickles. The service was ok. The hostess did mention that I had a birthday, The waitress did not which is ok But still would’ve been nice since it was on the reservation. No birthday dessert or option was offered, but I do realize a lot of places don’t do it so that is not taking away from the rating. The hostess and bussers were fabulous and nice But the waitress had an attitude the entire time and was very confusing. She first Was upset that we weren’t ordering an appetizer and saying we would be hungry and was trying to push bread on us and then after when we wanted to ribeye, she was pushing for us to only get one due to the size and that we would be too full(Which was fine because it was big and we saved money but we easily could’ve finished two) And then once we picked one dinner, she then was upset we didn’t order an appetizer again. It might just be her personality, but a bit more hospitality goes a long way. We were uncomfortable after the initial interaction And had no interest in ordering a dessert after(which she also was upset over). Overall, great atmosphere and food, just not great server. Ps we got the mango mojito and cinnamon Caipirinha were both good and reasonably priced.
Jessica B — Google review
We had dinner at Kampo and chose the Chef’s Table experience — highly recommended, but be sure to book in advance, as it’s essential! The food was excellent — the ravioli was delicate and full of flavor, and the dessert (something called White) was a beautiful surprise, both visually and in taste. The wine selection was great, perfectly complementing the dishes. We also ordered cocktails, but unfortunately, they didn’t live up to the rest of the experience. One small service hiccup: we asked for the cocktails to come before the meal, but they arrived almost simultaneously with the food. That said, the service overall was very professional and attentive. The atmosphere is very modern and stylish, and the experience is full of unexpected flavor combinations that truly surprise and delight. Would I recommend Kampo? 100%. It’s a must-visit spot in Madeira if you’re into creative cuisine and a refined dining experience.

Armazém do Sal is a charming restaurant located in the heart of Funchal, Portugal, housed within a former salt warehouse. The restaurant boasts an inviting ambiance with wooden beams and stone walls. It offers a small but dedicated vegan menu featuring three main dishes including soya moussaka with roasted aubergine, lentil salad with roasted vegetables, and barley salad with caramelized baby vegetables.
Had a lovely meal with the family while on vacation. There was live saxophone music with classics like Your Song and Yesterday. The food was terrific, and we chose the perfect wine pairing—surprisingly affordable too. The waiter was a little too attentive with refilling our water and wine glasses ;) just two sips and they were topped up again. But overall, it was all very nice, tastefully and friendly.

Fantastic. Visiting from London / South East UK, and pleased to say our palates were well looked after. Surprised to see someone describe it as horrendous, that feels harsh and unnecessary tbh ! We had one Fish Lover and one Meat Lover set, with a wine pairing for the meat. Sat outside. Lovely staff, and the live guitarist was perfect background to a thoughtful and genuinely tasty meal Had booked thru Google Maps, having experienced issues with Open Table. Only nudge is that the veg’s probably could be tidied up in prep, but the laminated menus, signage from the street and overall branding could do with a refresh to better reflect the quality of the experience !

The service was top notch. The cooking was perfect and I didn't see any faults with it. I just didn't love my meal. I think it's one of those times where you didn't order the best option off the menu for yourself lm

Credit where credit is due: the service here is absolutely amazing. The staff are incredibly friendly, polite, and genuinely make you feel valued – 10/10 for the team. Unfortunately, the food was a real disappointment and, for us, the single underwhelming dining experience we’ve had in Madeira so far. The fact they were on Michelin Guide will certainly mislead you into thinking you’re going to have an amazing meal. • Couvert: The bread and focaccia were served cold, not even at room temperature, and the butter portion was so small it was barely enough for one person, let alone to share. • Appetizers: We ordered beef tartare and ceviche. Both dishes were bland and lacked basic seasoning. The tartare felt like had not even salt or pepper, making it feel like eating raw meat straight from the butcher. The ceviche was completely overpowered by purée and sorbet, masking the fish flavor and textures entirely. • Main dishes: We had the prawn risotto and the cheeks. Both were “okay,” but had we skipped the starters, we might have been less disappointed. The risotto had plenty of prawns and decent flavor, but the rice was far too wet. The cheeks were tender, but the sides were plain, and the mashed potatoes had a taste that simply wasn’t for us. In short, while the service is exceptional, the food quality does not match the prices charged and let my wife and I very disappointed. For half of the price you can easily enjoy far better meals, with amazing views, elsewhere in Madeira. Can’t recommend a visit here.

Everywhere around the islands, people are very kind. Here the staff's hospitality is above and beyond. It's a weird alley, but please enter and book a table here. You won't be disappointed.

We had a fab experience here. They catered for my wife’s allergy needs 100%. Lovely people looking after us, lovely surroundings, lovely live music in the background.

Second time coming here. The first time (jan 2024) the tasting menu was fantastic, so I wanted to take my girlfriend. This time round the menu had changed significantly and was rather disappointing. However, the wine pairing was incredible and helped mask this. The staff were very nice, although the service could have been better. Also, please be aware that they don’t take amex. Would still highly recommend! - but please sort out the tasting menu and get an amex card reader

This is a really lovely restaurant. It was quiet Sunday evening. Food was delicious, one meat fixed choice and one a la carte black scabbard fish. Excellent dessert mille feuille. Recommend and would definitely return

Restaurant
Restaurante do Forte is a dining establishment located within the historic Sao Tiago Fortress, offering a unique and memorable experience. The restaurant boasts a diverse menu featuring both local and international dishes, with spectacular views of the harbor adding to the ambiance. The setting within the 17th-century fortress creates an elegant atmosphere, making it an ideal choice for a special evening out.
What a charming experience. We got a reservation no problem, the restaurant filled up later but never got too crowded. Our server Leo, was very attentive and had a great personality. Sofia was also excellent. The food was timed well and the wines paired nicely. We did the 9 course meal and when they say “drinks included” they really mean it. The wine was flowing and we left in very good spirits. The chef personally brought out the entrees and he was also excellent and we enjoyed his visits as well.

My wife took a shine to this place when we'd visited the fort previously so we took the 'Golden' package to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. The promise of travelling to and from our hotel in a 1932 Austin 12 was quite appealing and the driver on the way to the restaurant was terrific. The African staff were delightful but it all started to go wrong with my wife's 'adapted' gluten-free starter of grilled fois-gras which was shockingly inedible and could hardly be described as food! Service between courses was slow but main courses were reasonable if not spectacular. I was told upon booking that the chef would adapt dishes to suit my wife's coeliac disease. Of all the desserts on offer, only a chocolate pudding was considered suitable. My wife hates chocolate pudding and even I couldn't help her finish it! All this for €220! We couldn't even get a return trip in the Austin as no driver was available. We returned by taxi. Not the romantic event we expected and certainly not worth the cost. We live and learn (where not to eat). Disappointing.
Matthew S — Google review
Honestly I had high hopes for this place but their server wasn’t well versed in the menu and doesn’t understand what food restrictions means. Their tasting menu is very rigid and cannot be tailored to food restrictions. When our food restrictions were clearly stated, the server failed to tell us that the lamb dish is wrapped in our restrictions after saying it multiple times that we cannot have this item and the menu didn’t have it written. The food is mediocre at best. I don’t recommend this place if your expectation is a fancy well done restaurant and the cost isn’t justified.
Mishaal A — Google review
A beautiful place to have a treat meal. The service was great, not too much or too little. Scallops we're perfect, bit the main meal in my opinion was under seasoned. But overall I had a lovely meal.
Katy B — Google review
This place has really gone downhill over the years. I went last week for dinner with my boyfriend, and both the food and service left us disappointed. The gambas were fine, the cod was delicious, but the desserts were awful, especially the creme brulee (do yourself a favor and skip it). Overall, the meal was nowhere near worth the 50€. The service was messy and unprepared from the start. We were first handed sticky, oily menus in French and German, even though we had clearly asked for a table in English. Only later did we receive equally sticky English menus. When it came to the wine, things got even worse. The staff only brought one type (white or red) at a time, as if we’d both ordered the same, leaving one of us waiting while they fetched the other bottle. To make matters worse, the white wine wasn’t chilled at all, it hadn’t even seen the inside of a fridge. At the end of the meal, my boyfriend’s glass of wine was taken away along with the plates, even though we had just asked for another round. It’s a shame, because the setting is beautiful and inviting, but the poor service and uneven food quality make it impossible to recommend. Definitely not worth the price.

We visited 14th September, we booked the golden package. The entire experience was wonderful from getting picked up in the classic car, eating excellent food with great service to a drive around funchal before being dropped back at the hotel. The dining experience was fantastic, the food and wine selection was of a high quality with each course complimenting the wine. We have a view out to sea through an old cannon emplacement. Every member of staff was friendly and welcoming. I can't fault it, it will be something to remember for a long time

I was looking for a special place to celebrate my man’s birthday and our last evening in Madeira – and after trying so many restaurants on the island in a week, that all felt quite similar, this was by far the best choice I could have made! I booked the same day for the evening and was lucky enough to get the exact table I had spotted in photos before :) We went for the 9-course gourmet tasting menu with drinks included (I think it was unlimited – our glasses were never empty! Champagne, rosé, white, red… even one or two liqueurs at the end – I lost count!). It was such a great decision – I’ll say it again: we absolutely loved it! The service and staff were amazing – cheerful, kind, and attentive. The table set up - beautiful! The dishes were absolutely delicious, and the chef came out a few times himself to present them – a lovely touch! The weather and the view were perfect, and the music added to the whole atmosphere. A truly unique setting, completely different from the touristy places just a few steps away. In short – whether it's for a special occasion or just to treat yourself to a magical evening, it’s so worth it! Huge thanks to the whole team – you made our evening unforgettable!

Restaurante Casal da Penha is a charming, family-owned restaurant located in the heart of Funchal. The traditional Madeiran and Portuguese dishes served here include bolo do caco, black scabbard fish with bananas, Madeiran-style tuna, espetada, and passionfruit pudding with Madeira wines. The restaurant also offers a daily variety of fresh fish and seafood purchased at the local market.
Dining at Casal da Penha was one of the highlights of our trip! Michael took such wonderful care of us — his attention and hospitality made the experience even more special. The food was absolutely outstanding; it was so delicious that we didn’t even feel the need to try other restaurants in Madeira. We just wanted to come back and taste more dishes! On top of that, the view from the terrace is beautiful and creates the perfect atmosphere. Highly recommended!

a very nice restaurant that seems to have a lot of returning customers. the service was excellent, the staff was helpful, some were very funny. the food, though, was a bit pricey for what we got. the seafood pasta was the only dish that felt like it’s worth the price, other than that the rest of what we ordered just felt ok, the chicken we could have made better at home. but in general it’s a really nice atmospheric place, we had a really nice time.

We are on holiday in Funchal with friends and managed to book last evening. It was recommended by another friend and we were not disappointed. The food, staff and ambiance were absolutely outstanding. It was the best meal of our holiday and I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone seeking a great culinary experience. And it is very reasonably priced. Win win 👍 Ps: make sure to book to avoid disappointment

Absolutely delicious! Sat on terrace. Had the grilled bread with the octopus vinaigrette, which has chopped onions and red peppers with pieces of tender octopus in an olive oil vinaigrette. A star starter! Loved the huge grilled Tiger shrimp which came with 4 pieces(2 tigers split in half) and it was decadent. Also enjoyed the sea bass which as succulent and tasty. Ended the amazing food with desserts of chocolate cake with ganache and ice cream as apple tart. Attentive service and should be a Michelin spot!

Ordered scabbard fish with fried banana(too sour with passion fruit for me) and my wife scabbard fish with shrimps(I needed to order that). Also grilled bread with garlic(very nice). The concierge excellent and funny guy. Recommend book in advance. View surrealistic with the huge hotel in background.

My favorite dinner we had in Funchal! The steak was amazing and the side with the steak was great as was the cheesecake for dessert. Great (and cheap) red wine as well. Service was great and we had a table with a beautiful view

We visited this restaurant for lunch and were very impressed with both the service and the food. The staff were attentive, knowledgeable, and even took the time to explain how to properly enjoy the limpets, which added a thoughtful touch to the experience. We ordered a selection of starters, mains, and desserts to share, and each dish was of excellent quality. Highlights included the squid piri piri, the black scabbard with champagne sauce, and the grilled octopus — all beautifully prepared and full of flavor. To finish, the tiramisu was a perfect ending to the meal. Portions are generous, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the overall experience was thoroughly enjoyable. Highly recommended

Great location with free parking right outside (maybe we got lucky?) and a terrace with ocean views. Staff is friendly and attentive, especially with kids. Atmosphere is relaxing, nice music, and private. Food is hit and miss: prawns were good, carpaccio not our taste, tuna in wine sauce tasty (but well done which they did mention but made me wonder if it would have been even better if the tuna was medium…), and scabbardfish with banana sauce a bit greasy. Nice touch: small glasses of Madeira wine with the bill 🍷. Worth visiting for the views and service, more than the food.

Fine dining restaurant
Nestled in the enchanting heart of Funchal's old town, William Restaurant is a true gem that embodies elegance and sophistication. Set within a beautifully restored 18th-century mansion, this Michelin-starred dining destination invites guests on an exquisite culinary adventure that celebrates the rich flavors of Madeira. With stunning views overlooking Porto de Funchal, diners can savor innovative dishes crafted from the finest local ingredients while enjoying a contemporary twist on traditional European cuisine.
The level of service was exceptional, marked by warmth and attentiveness. The cuisine was of the highest caliber, with an exquisite taste profile. The restaurant eschewed superfluous ornamentation, opting instead for a minimalist aesthetic. The wine pairing was both distinctive and delectable, enhancing the overall dining experience. Undoubtedly worthwhile!

Excellent food and excellent service. Exactly what you would expect from a restaurant in the michelin guide. Everything was cooked as it should be, and seasoning was spot on. Initial amuse bouches were great, the fish tartare bite was my favourite (I'm sure I would love a course built from this), and I found the apple based palet cleanser very refreshing. The trout was very nice, and while I appreciate trying to reduce waste, I think the pickle water could be used in a better way. The lobster was fantastic. The only fish course that slightly missed me was the scorpionfish, as I found the toasted yeast component a bit overpowering, but my partner enjoyed it. I think I would have been happier if the root vegetable puree was a bit sweeter. The main of pork shoulder was cooked perfectly and overall the dish was well balanced. I found the desert a fairly standard affair, but the caramel in the shape of madeira was a finish. We had an extra little cake brought to the table for an anniversary, which was a nice touch. The petite fours were also presented beautifully with the small tree and paired very well with some whisky to finish. The only thing I'd say is if you're not getting an additional drink at the end, hold back on your final pairing so you have something to go with it (coffee drinkers will be fine, but it was quite a late sit for caffeine). All the wine pairings worked well, and I enjoyed tasting slightly more unusual offerings like the sparkling cider. The restaurant itself has great views over the sea, and as night descended, we could see funchal lit up from the other side. We'll be back in Madeira, and I wouldn't hesitate to book again. These minor criticisms are a matter of taste, not a reflection on the skills of the chefs. Thank you for a lovely evening.

We had an overall good experience at William Restaurant. The service was top notch and what you would expect from a fine dining restaurant of this quality. The atmosphere was nice, with a beautiful view of the bank of the island. The restaurant was a little warm when we arrived, and it took until nearly the end of our meal for them to open up some extra windows for things to cool off. The sommelier was excellent. We are not typically wine drinkers, but he was able to find us wine that we both enjoyed that paired really well with our meal. The presentation of the food was very pretty and as you've seen in images on Google. I left three stars because the flavor left something to be desired. For the price, I had expected more. I found the lobster a bit fishy and chewy for my taste. I think the catch from their coast was parrotfish for our night (but I could be misremembering), but my first bite was a tad fishy (the rest of the dish was fine). Overall, a good experience. I probably would try somewhere else rather than go back.

I flew all the way from Canada to try William and Desarma and other restaurant. First of all i want to talk about service. I have to many micheline restaurant in the world. William is on my top about service from beginning when I enter hotel staffs were so welcome and polite they guided me to restaurant and the whole staffs of restaurant were so welcome and I feel like home right away. The view and the ambiance was A1👌. Lighting is perfect for dining but my eyes are weak I have a hard time to read the menu. So I turned flash light of my iPhone to read but I adjusted very discrete because I don’t want to bother other clients. 10 seconds later Gonçalo( waiter) came with a little flash light for me with his smile asking if I need it. All staffs were very professional but Goçalo is la cream de la cream👌 professional and always has his smile on. I love the sommeiller also he’s very professional I explained to him what I like and he got me exact wine I want. About food, I love everything of it especially their lobster dish cooked to a perfection 👌. Only 1 small problem that bothering me on my main course that the chef used the peeled skin of asparagus I believed he fried or dehydrate to garnish on my pork shoulder which was very fiber and chewy the pork and everything else was very good but that peeled skin of asparagus ruined it a bit. Cactus skin sorbet with a touch of seaweed was memorable. Chocolate mousse with lemon sorbet also nice mix. Thank you very much for memorable dinner to whole staffs and chefs👏. I’ll come back with more friends very soon.

We celebrated our 10th Anniversary with a date at this restaurant. Had a great experience. Great culinary delights served with a smile and insights into the local tradition and culture. My wife had the Vegan menu and I had the smaller William menu with the wine pairing. Given how small each course looks, we were both left wondering how we were so stuffed at the end of the meal. Would definitely recommend!

Dining at William Restaurant Madeira was an unforgettable experience — truly worthy of its Michelin star. From start to finish, everything was phenomenal. Our server, Cindy, was exceptional — attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate, which elevated the entire evening. The service matched the stunning setting perfectly. We enjoyed the Chef’s tasting menus (Discovery and William), and every course was a masterpiece — beautifully presented, balanced, and full of flavor. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves, but words can’t fully capture the artistry and care behind each dish. If you’re in Madeira, William is a must for a world-class culinary experience.

The menu is a testament to the chef’s visionary commitment to local ingredients. Every dish tells a story of the region, with flavors that feel both grounded and innovative. Each plate arrives as a piece of art, meticulously crafted, showcasing the beauty of seasonal, locally sourced produce. The chef’s dedication to honoring local flavors is evident in every bite, elevating even the simplest ingredients to something truly extraordinary. A special mention goes to the sommelier, whose expertise added a magical touch to the evening. With a deep knowledge of local wines and an approachable, friendly manner, they crafted pairings that were perfect complements to each course. The explanations were both insightful and engaging, allowing us to appreciate the subtle notes in each glass. very recommend

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Funchal's Old Town, Restaurante Taberna Ruel is a charming eatery that stands out with its eye-catching yellow facade on Rua de Santa Maria. This beloved spot offers a delightful blend of Madeiran cuisine and traditional European dishes, all complemented by an impressive selection of Portuguese wines. Guests can choose to dine al fresco on the lively pedestrian street, enjoy a cozy meal under the historic stone arches indoors, or savor grilled steaks in the serene rear courtyard.
We had lunch yesterday and the food and service was amazing. We had the. Branco Sangria and it divine. We sat outside Rua Se Santa Maria and it was lively. I gave them 4* for service since they had added an extra glass of wine which we never ordered but when I pointed it out they removed it. We would definitely go there again.

I really liked this place, they were playing old school rock hits and I had the most chill yet attentive server. I got the fish soup and the octopus tavern style and both dishes were splendid. The octopus was grilled nicely and perfectly salted, and paired well with the sautéed onions and peppers. It came with a minuscule amount of sweet potato mash- it could do with more. I really enjoyed myself at this restaurant and it’s a wonderful find in the old town.

Came here on a Sunday for lunch. Start are wonderful and very friendly and efficient. However the food was disappointing. The garlic bread starter was a very disappointing start to the meal. The beef skewer and fries were good, however the fish and prawns were well overcooked and the portion size was disappointing for the price. The tequila sunrise was great however the mojito was abysmal.

Great food and service! The servers were very pleasant and knowledgable on the local seafood and what pairs well. I forgot my bag at the restaurant and they ran across the street to bring it back for me!

Unfortunately it was not the best experience eating at this restaurant. In the picture it was supposed to be a red snapper but I paid 47 euros for a bland tasting fish instead. The lasagna was not cooked enough and it wasn't tasty at all. I will say though, It was pretty late (around 10:30 pm). However, the service was good, the boys were nice and attentive.

Nice spot for local food and other things. We booked online for a big group which was helpful. ChatGPT said it was great for tapas and sharing but actually it’s just regular sized portions served in even bigger plates haha. I tried the fish with banana which surprisingly works as a combo. Staff were friendly but running around as they were very busy. Located towards the end of the Funchal town.

Located just 5 minutes from Funchal, AUDAX Restaurante offers a unique dining experience with its progressive Madeiran cuisine. The restaurant puts a creative spin on traditional dishes, using local ingredients and changing the menu by season. Guests can enjoy a complimentary wine pairing with each dish of the tasting menu, featuring delicious red and white wines as well as the famous Madeiran wine.
In between the many great individual hikes, we spent a day in Funchal and treated ourselves to lunch at AUDAX. The outstanding professionalism of the service paired with the incredibly delicious, progressive Madeiran food was simply indescribable. For €23, we got three courses including a bottle of water and a coffee per person. After a few conversations with the waiters, we found out that the 9-course menu in the evening was even more exceptional - they say that in passing! :-O Unfortunately, it was our last evening and the restaurant was fully booked. For me, the restaurant is a culinary highlight and 100% recommendable!

I’ve known and loved this restaurant since the day it opened. The photos I’m sharing were taken over several years, as they regularly change the menu. Dining here has always been a true chef’s experience — with creative, unexpected flavor combinations. They also offer an excellent wine selection and a team that’s passionate, knowledgeable, and genuinely good at what they do. The space is small and intimate, so it’s best to book a table in advance. Recently, the restaurant received a Michelin recommendation, and while that’s well-deserved, it has brought some changes: prices have doubled or even tripled, while portion sizes have shrunk significantly. I can no longer say it offers the same great value it once did. Earlier menus were better balanced — with dishes like risottos and hearty sides that made for a more satisfying meal. Still, it remains a unique spot for a special evening and a chance to explore bold, carefully crafted cuisine.
Moomin V — Google review
We stumbled across AUDAX on a walk about town and after a quick search decided to book in, and I'm so glad we did. An absolute highlight of the island and some of the best food I have ever eaten. I went for the 7 course menu and my girlfriend got the 5 course vegetarian offering, both with the wine. The food was utterly excpetional and bursting with flavour. The wine pairing was a true accompaniment to the meal, letting both the food and the wine shine together. Along with this the service was marvellous, with clearly passionate servers taking the time to really explain the meal and wine to you. Not to be missed.
Sean R — Google review
I went to a restaurant featured in the Michelin Guide; not yet starred, but clearly aspiring. The food was good, even thoughtful: each plate balanced and precise without feeling fussy. But what I’ll remember most wasn’t the food. It was the Michelin Man. A small statue of him sat right in front of us throughout dinner; a squat, beaming sentinel of white rubber rings. Up close, he looks less like a mascot and more like a relic from some ancient civilization that worshipped tires and torque. His form is hypnotic: dozens of concentric ridges stacked into a soft geometry of confidence. His smile is the calm grin of someone who’s seen a thousand steering wheels and lived to tell the tale. The longer he sat there, the more alive he seemed. Light rippled over his curved belly, giving the illusion of breath. He looked on approvingly as we lifted forks and glasses, as if silently evaluating both our meal and our manners. There’s something humbling about eating under the gaze of a creature who has become a global arbiter of taste; not through culinary mastery, but through tires. The food, yes, was quite good. But it’s the Michelin Man who lingered in my mind: serene, spherical, and strangely divine; the patron saint of dinner and the open road.
Story M — Google review
What a wonderful experience. From the friendly greeting at the door to the knowledgable chefs and the stunning food presentation. Thanks a lot to the whole team of Audax, we will surely remember this evening.
Dave — Google review
My family went this place for the dinner of the last night in Madeira! We had 10 course meal with wine pairing. Just like as their restaurant name indicates, "Progressive Madeiran Cuisine" is just right description for their foods. They sourced out majority of ingredients like seafood from Madeira and cooked them just right with beautiful seasoning. All the staffs were very friendly and they have a layout of open kitchen so you will be able to see the chef's detailed attention for garnish and stuffs. Also our wine sommelier gives good explanation on wines in the words that are easy to understand. They're currently on Michelin Guide but I do believe they deserve a star not just in terms of foods but also in terms of their services and attention to details.

I don't get to go to fine dining restaurants often but I have 0 regrets about treating me and my partner to the delicious 5 course tasting menu here. Delicious food, and it wasn't like other tasting menus where the portions are so small that you aren't full; it was a proper meal!

Combatentes is a no-nonsense, family-run restaurant that serves scabbardfish, espetada (barbecued beef on a skewer), lots of seafood and a couple of tasty vegetarian dishes. It has a simple dining room and is good for Portuguese wine lovers.
We turned up without a reservation early in the evening and were given a table on the understanding that it would be needed in an hour and a half. Not a problem for us, as we are fast eaters. We were lucky though, as we saw several people being turned away as they had not booked. The food was excellent, with lots of flavour, and was beautifully presented, and the staff were great too.

We arrived on spec without a reservation and were warmly accommodated - it was 27/03/25 so I'd suggest booking ahead if in peak season. This is a nice restaurant offering some nice food - 2 courses each with a decent bottle of wine came in at €95.50. The only down side is that bread is automatically brought to the table (as is normal and complimentary), but it's charged for and the charge isn't overly transparent.

We pinned this classy restaurant in Google maps based on the Pack the Suitcases travel blog (recommended). But we may not have actually dined there but for the fact that we stumbled upon the restaurant as we were exploring Funchal. Glad we did. We made a reservation for that same night, requesting the duece along the balcony railing. When we arrived at the appointed time, the table was waiting empty for us in a very full and busy restaurant. Thanks! This table really is the best in the house (for two people), but I must provide a warning. Other guests are dining directly below the railing. I was worried during the entire meal that we would accidentally knock our wine bottle or a full wine glass onto unsuspecting diners below. For the restaurant, I suggest providing helmets for guests at the lower-level tables, which would be in keeping with the restaurant’s name. 😀 Other than worrying about wine-bombing the table below, we had a delightful and excellent meal from a menu that is just as strong on both seafood and landfood, and the service was excellent. Really great fish restaurant next to the local fruit & fish market. We had great starters and an amazing tuna Steak of 520 g (€41,-) to share with some side dishes. Great quality - ok price. Service was good. Make sure you have a reservation for dinner.

Found it by case, the Fish Market was full of people,it was the bank holiday. Excellent service, they also have fresh fish from the market, bring it at the table and explain it with all the details 🤓. The waiters are super kind and always available even if they are serving others. The kitchen super clean and you have the cooking in front of you 😍. Between a course and other they switch with a new set of cutlery. You definitely pay a visit, prices are overall very cheap compared with the quality of the food, when you see professional people they run a business with passion also, it's a unbeatable match 👌. I was dissapointed of the food here. To be honest, it was not as nice at it looks in pictures. For this price level, should be fine! Shrimp was over cooked, calamare had no taste and carbonara seemed interesting but had no taste. Fish roll was really bad with all bones 🫢 Maybe we should have ordered fish of the day?

Lovely location, with a parking garage nearby. It’s located right next to the mercado. The food was really good, I will highly recommend the Cod croquettes. Personally one the best restaurants I’ve ever been to. We’ve been treated so kindly plus the food was AMAZING. Fresh local fish paired with a mix of ingredients that brought out a wonderful flavour. Everything was perfect, they even served us a small portion of cod fish (that we didn’t ask for, it was for free) and their bread with aromatic butter was delish. I’d definitely recommend.

Restaurant
Restaurante Vila do Peixe is a seafood restaurant located in the lively Camara de Lobos, just a short drive from Funchal. The restaurant offers a live fish counter where diners can select their own fresh seafood, including tuna, sea bream, and black scabbard fish. These are simply grilled with salt and served alongside stunning views of the city and bay through floor-to-ceiling windows.
Great place and excellent selection of fresh fish, you’ll need reservations for sure on weekends and during the high season. Prices are reasonable for European standards but maybe on the pricier side for Madeira. We haven’t tried their sister restaurant but it has great reviews as well. It was a week after Christmas and we had carolers which was entertaining 😍

Hands down one of the best spots we found in Madeira. The view? Unreal. Sitting there with the ocean in front of you and the sun going down – pure magic. The fish was next level. Super fresh, grilled just right, and full of flavor. Simple, honest, and seriously good. Plus, the staff was so lovely – warm, attentive, and always with a smile. It’s one of those places where everything just feels right. Good food, good people, good vibes. Definitely a must if you’re around!

We had a great dinner there! Food was very tasty and portions quite big. You can choose your own fish, whey will tell you exact price after checking the weights . Great starter of the day for 3.5 euro. Waiting time around 40 min. for food, but that’s ok. I highly recommend this place.

Fresh fish right off the counter, but service was a bit difficult to catch since they were running around everywhere. The octopus was delicious, but I was confused why we only got one type of octopus. The description said octopus 3 ways, but they only brought us octopus in a soupy way. The prawns were crispy and well seasoned with a lemony flavor. For mains, we got fish from the counter. It was a mix of tuna belly (super soft and just a bit fatty), a red snapper equivalent, and a monkfish. Aside from the food, the restaurant has floor to ceiling windows for great views of the fishing village below. At night, the church and some parts of it are lit up.

Overall a solid dining experience. I came here solo and picked one of their most popular fish, limpets (requested a half order as I was by myself), and bolo do caco (also half order). The limpets were delicious and lived up to the hype. Bolo do caco was also good. Fish was delicious, although some parts were a bit too salty but it was just the seasoning on the skin. It came with 3 sauces: mayo, a hot spicy one and a pesto oil. The pesto sauce was delicious. The fish was a pretty big portion and was definitely full after.
Crystal W — Google review
Nice staff, the was okay, but its very overpriced. You can easily find something similar for much better price. The staff was nice, but the food is totally avarage. The shrimp was very weird, it had a bad taste to it somehow. The calamari was okay, but arrived cold to the table, the fish was full taste of vinegar.

Guys, definitely a must visit in Madeira is this perfect point!! We have found it as we cruised around with Yellowbus sightseeing. Amazing food, fishes that you will choose directly at the fish bar, you will get a very helpfull information if you are not sure which fish is better for you directly from the staff, just ask. Guys working there are nice, polite, and will guide you to select the right food for you. The views from the terrace are amazing, best to book up a table before the sunset time. I and my wife enjoyed the meal a lot, with good Madeira wine and local beer. Absolutely sure we will return once again if we come to Madeira.

Nestled in the charming Rua de Santa Maria, Restaurante Gavião Novo is a delightful gem that showcases the best of local cuisine. This cozy eatery is beloved by both locals and visitors alike, offering an inviting atmosphere where you can savor expertly grilled limpets and fresh parrotfish. The menu also features succulent flambeed steaks drizzled with Roquefort sauce, making it a must-visit for meat lovers.
It’s a very luxe place. It is expensive but it is 110% worth it. The house wines, white and red, are very smooth, the food is amazing. I got the seafood rice and it was amazing. It’s a portion for two and you get 2 and a half plates worth, the fish to rice ratio is perfectly balanced, not too much rice just to try and fill you up. The squid, muscles, and the rice were cooked to perfection, not a fishy taste off it at all. The service was sublime. We were made feel so welcome and taken care of all of the time, we were never left with an empty plate or an empty glass. The only thing was we were outside and were little flies, but I don’t think that’s in control of the restaurant. If you’re coming to Madeira, a seafood fanatic and don’t mind spending an extra bit, definitely recommend coming here!

Very Disappointing – Wouldn’t Recommend We came here as a group of five, excited to try different dishes. Unfortunately, almost everything we ordered tasted bad. The ESPETADA was the worst — none of us could even take more than one bite. We asked for a discount because two dishes were completely inedible, but they only gave us 10% off on those, which was just 3.50€. It felt like a small gesture for such a poor experience. The only one eatable dish was mushroom pasta. Carbonara and risotto were really bad, the worst in my life. Just take a look at the photos of our dishes. The presentation says a lot about the taste. We won’t be back, and we wouldn’t recommend this place to others.

The food is not necessarily better than in other places in Madeira, but for sure it is a lot more expensive. The portions are small compared to what other restaurants offer. We were sitting outside and next to our table there was this person (maybe the manager or the owner, as he wasn't serving the tables and would give instructions to the staff) who would loudly approach every person and invite them to eat there. When you are sitting there and have to listen to the same speech all over it's just annoying. He managed to bring some new clients, but he also managed to provide an unpleasant experience to the clients that he already had. The service was great, our waiter was very efficient and friendly.

Located in Funchal Old Town with a stunning view of the marina, Beerhouse is not your typical craft brewery. This restaurant and microbrewery offers a wide selection of food and drinks, including pale ales, lagers, stouts, and wine. The menu features delectable dishes such as lobster spaghetti, black pepper fillet steak, prawn kebabs, and crispy pork belly.
Normally I'd be a bit sceptical of places that are in such a prime tourist location and would usually avoid... But I'm SO glad we didn't avoid this place. It was so beautiful sat in the sunshine with great beer, looking out at the marina. The staff were so friendly and welcoming and the food was just perfect! Filip and Abel are the best! Between two of us we shared a meat and a chicken skewers, with fried polenta and salad.... Sensational!

One of the nicest meals we had all week in Madeira. I thought the food would be bad because it’s called Beerhouse but actually it was great. They do lots of pots with rice and fish which were very good. I also had the peppercorn steak which was great. The staff are also very friendly and super organized. We were a large group and still managed to all order and pay separately which was nice.

If you come for food, then avoid it. Poncha fine, mojito fine, but the food OMG so terrible. It looked like whale ate drunk shrimps and then vomited on the bread and rice and also tasted like dish washing cleaner. The Madeira bread as always fine. So in conclusion avoid shrimp foods. Biggest price from 10 different places in which we ate and also the worst. Believe me, do not order that. Also normally,if food is bad and basically nothing was ate the restaurant gives you some discount, but not here. The worst place in Madeira. View is awesome though. Replying to your reply: WE TOLD YOU MULTIPPLE TIMES THAT FOOD WAS BAD AND TASTED LIKE A DISH CLEANER. You never considered that there was a bad dish cleaner situation?

We had beer and a passion fruit cake. Beer is top quality and dessert was great. We didn’t order food. Honey beer was a 10/10, honey tasting but also strong. A big selection of beers and great views. Not sure on food but recommend for beer and relaxation 🍻

The drinks here as well as the service is very good. It’s a busy touristy area but a lots of seats, good atmosphere. The food itself is 3.4/5, the steak particularly was very dry. Overall definitely a nice place to sit, chat, have some drinks.

Our first night in town and we just wanted some food after getting in late and this place was close and open. They had a great beer selection and I got a steak sandwich which was fantastic, loaded up. Tried a couple of the beers including a barrel aged imperial stout which was lovely. Maybe a touch pricier than most places, but didn't seem wild compared to what we paid in other places. Worth a trip if you like different beers.
Sean R — Google review
I only went to try the beers that they brew on the premises. I had a flight of 5 beers, but the selection was fixed i.e. you couldn't choose the 5 beers you wanted, which is not how beer flights work in my experience. Cost was 17.95 euros for 5 x 30ml servings, so not cheap. The overall quality of the beers was mediocre at best, but it was a lovely setting, sitting in the sun with a nice view. 😎

Chef Julio Pereira showcases his innovative take on Portuguese flavors with dishes like fried codfish tacos, white fish ceviche, and mussels in Jaipur sauce. The restaurant has garnered praise and was honored with a Tripadvisor Travellers Choice award. Additionally, it is featured on the menus of popular local establishments such as Gaviao Novo and La ao Fundo.
This is the second restaurant in Madeira that I highly recommend. I skipped their main and tried most of their appetizers/starters. They were so good that I kept ordering different ones and filled myself up with just those. All the starters has a balanced flavor profile except the dessert. The dessert had a lot going on. It was good but too complex and very rich. Overall this meal was a solid bang for the buck. The group seated next to me was revisiting the restaurant after trying it the day before- that is how much they loved it and I get it. I highly recommend.

Last minute reservation and sat at the Chef’s table and had a fun dinner. Amazing watching the chef work and orchestrate his masterpieces. Loved it all! Had shrimp curry in a decadent curry sauce, fresh bread to eat the sauce! Shared a 2 pp grouper over seafood rice. The grouper was plentiful and so yummy. Such a great vibe! A must try!

We didn't have a reservation but our tour guide recommended this place which was right behind our hotel. They were super busy but the hostess, Raquel, still accommodated us. We tried their 5 course menu for two. It was amazing!! The hostess made the experience so fantastic! One of the dishes had shellfish which I can't have and when she heard this she went to the chef and made a special one just for me. These people are really hardworking and will go above and beyond to make sure their customers have a great time and enjoy their food. I travel all around the world and I would say this place was one of the best restaurants I've been to! Def check them out if you're in the area!

Excellent dinner for solo traveler. Reservation made through google. Was seated at bar in front of head chef. Was able to view the kitchen action. Staff were attentive and friendly. They were able to accommodate the shareable starter plates for one. Food was excellent. I’d recommend this restaurant for anyone visiting Funchal.

This was one of my favourite meals while I was in Madeira! It was recommended to me by a tour guide and I am so happy I went! I had a cod fish taco, braised tuna with risotto and caramel bananas with ice cream. Everything was cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. Their house wine was awesome and my server told me that it is made at a vineyard on the island and it is made specifically for them, you can't get it anywhere else! How cool! I was solo travelling so they were able to squeeze me in but I would recommend making a reservation!

Amazing experience!!! Loved all the dishes ❤️ It was really great that for starters I can take half of a dish, so I was able to try more of this great cuisine. Sitting on the chef’s table and seeing kitchen’s work - 🥰 To start I had tuna tartare, ceviche, prawns, for the main - tuna belly steak, everything cooked to perfection!

The food and wine are excellent — we really liked the food a lot. The only thing I didn’t like is that the restaurant is run like a machine; it feels more about efficiency than about the food or the experience. Everything moves very quickly and it’s pretty hectic. For example, I hadn’t even sat down fully before they asked if I wanted some water. They also emphasized that we had only two hours to eat, even though we didn’t end up taking a full hour. That said, the staff became noticeably friendlier toward the end, which made the experience a bit more pleasant.

We came here for our last dinner on Madeira and we didn't regret it. The food was perfect and the service excellent. Especially Angi did a really good job and made us feel super comfortable and welcome. We recommend the Classic Menu and then the Codfish tacos again (which we did order additionally, because they were so great). We are from Berlin and we think this 150€ menu (including wine and water) was better than most of the 300€ menus we get at home. We would not be surprised if Akua's efforts for higher awards will succeed 😉

Seafood restaurant
Lareira Portuguesa is a spacious restaurant located in the heart of Funchal's hotel zone, offering two distinct dining experiences on its two floors. The top floor provides a casual atmosphere and specializes in meat dishes, while the lower level offers an intimate and formal setting with a focus on fish-based cuisine. It is recommended to visit early on weekdays to enjoy a quieter dining experience before it gets busy, especially when cruise ships are docked. Reservations are advisable during peak times.
Sea food restaurant, fish lobster fresh from tank.. good service from start to finish. Out last night on the island.

It's a nice place with good food. The first time I had creamy cod, that was really good. It's a cod covered by mashed potatoes, a traditional Portuguese dish. The portion was huge, easy to feed 2 ppl, unfortunately, they didn't mention it. The second time, I had seafood salad. It was very fresh but needed salt, pepper, oil , and vinegar - they put it on your table. It might be the way it served , I dont know.

We came here 5 evenings in row, all the food was great. Ask for their local fish with banana- maracua sauce, it’s something special. Kebab was great, highly recommended

The huge fresh oysters are incredible tasty - the best I’ve had to date!! ❤️ The fish of the day (parrot-fish) was perfectly grilled and larger than I had expected, so I struggled to finish up but everything was just too good to be left in the plate! The restaurant is top rated and, having tested it, I can understand why. A bit difficult to locate it though, as it’s quite hidden on a small street and the entrance is quite small too which doesn’t make it too visible if you’re not familiar with the surroundings. We’ve only been there once, but the food is excellent and fresh, so we’ll return!

Visited recently for my birthday. The service was excellent friendly, courteous and extremely helpful. We were looking for a nice bottle of wine, but were not familar with those available after a short chat we were given a recommendation which was perfect. The food was incredible, fresh ingredients and stunning flavours. We visited based upon a recommendation and couldn't have been more satisfied.

Our hotel recommended this restaurant for local cuisine and it was delightful! I had the seafood zarzuela, and it was beyond expectations and well worth the price. My husband and parents had separate meat dishes and were surprised that there was no sauce with the meat, but it was very tender and juicy. We had garlic bread as a starter, which was extren tasty. We paired the fish and meat with delicious local Madeira wine.

If you arrive early on a weekday, say 1830-1900, you will have your choice of seating and the staff's attention as you will likely only be sharing the space with a few other diners. Later, especially if a cruise ship is docked, it fills up. Consider reserving a table. Our staff was ok to fair with English. They have a great selection of wines. Cocktails may leave something to be desired by lack of, but we found their martinis to be good. If you'd like an olive, in your drink, ask for it that way. It will have a pit too, fyi. That's how they roll here and practically everywhere else we've dined out on Funchal. Now you know. A good selection of fresh fish, live lobsters/oyster/mussels are available. Like, you can't go wrong here. My partner has gluten allergies, noted to the staff and may have had a small reaction? Not enough of one to keep us from coming back. This is not a gluten free restaurant, nor does it claim to be, but they certainly try to be accommodating. I would not suggest celiacs dine here. We visited twice and would happily recommend any of their two person platters judging by the two we immensely enjoyed. Both on each visit were amazing. Beautifully prepared fish and seafood. I suggest you consider ordering one side dish if you get a 2P platter. The sides are good portions, the 2P platters are generous. The warm garlic bread starter is tasty and if you save some, great for sopping up juices. You might have difficulty finishing everything, especially if you order an appetizer. 😋 If you somehow save room for dessert, bless you. Try the cheesecake, pudding or ask your server. If you are from the States like us, service is different than back home. Be chill. You need only get their attention and you will find everyone here as helpful as you can wish.

The bar offers an array of freshly brewed beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests to unwind with.
Excellent food, and wait staff were well versed in accompanying wines, even explaining some of the intricacies of keeping wine to us. What really stands out is the service. Generous, friendly and knowledgeable. When we said we would share starters, our waiter came back quickly with small plates and serving spoons and even offered a small top up of wine to finish our food once we'd emptied our bottle. We had to come back a second time before we finished our holiday.

Update December 2022: Each course was mediocre at best, it is so sad to see a once exceptional restaurant descend to this level. I know that they have major staffing problems with an extremely high turnover of staff, maybe this explains the problem. Sadly I still cannot recommend this restaurant, the competition on Madeira is fierce and there are plenty of better options available. Update December 2021: Service not great, and after waiting 45 minutes for food it was average at best. No real apology either for the slow service. So disappointed as loved this place last year. I am leaving my original review here, but based on our latest visit can't really continue to recommend it. Hopefully your experience will be better. Superb food and great value lunch menu. Will definitely return for dinner menu. Highly recommended. Return to my favourite restaurant for two of my favourite meals of this trip. Crispy Prawn starter, and Crispy Belly Pork for main. The "crackling" belly pork skin is so, so good, I would happily pay for a plate of this alone. The wine is fantastic, and terrific value for money. I will miss this place for sure.

Our New Year's eve dinner was amazing!! Every course was perfectly designed and executed, both the food and wine pairing, plus excellent service from start to finish. They also had a vegetarian option, but we tried the regular menu and it was delicious. Highly recommend if you live in, or are visiting, Funchal ❤️

The food was incredible, the cocktails were delicious, the view was great and each of the waiters were informative and friendly. We only stayed in Madeira for 4 nights and chose to eat here for 2 of those evenings. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone. (P.S. if you go, have the scabbard fish, it was so good it's what made us go back a second time).

We went there for dinner last week, service was perfect, waiters had good manners and fluent english.Pleasant atmosphere. We got amuse bouche which was tomato and coconut soup(good connection flavours). Starter was beef tartar for both, made on different way then classic, but one level up. For main course she had tuna with citrus risotto which was not too strong to destroy flavours of fish, tuna was cooked perfectly pink how need to be. I had black rice with pieces of octopus and fish of the day(swordfish I think) which was perfectly cooked as well. Chef did excellent job, same as waiters. Highly recommended!

Pátio das Babosas is a great Portuguese restaurant in the town of Funchal, Madeira. The food is delicious and the portions are large, making it perfect for a quick bite or a full meal. It can be quite busy so be prepared to wait awhile, but the views from the outdoor seating are worth the wait. The bar serves alcohol, and there is free wifi available.
Very nice place to have lunch, with good options on the menu. The prices vary, but nothing is too expensive, at least not given the food quality and portion. The waiters are very kind and attentive. Eating on the terrace is a big plus!

Ate here after visiting the Monte Palace. The view was beautiful on the terrace and it was not too busy. Ate a lovely meal, the fish with wine and garlic sauce, would recommend. The service was great, a bit of good banter with the waitstaff. Among the best meals I’ve had in Madeira.

The best food we had on our holidays in Madeira. After first time we had to go back. We loved the scabbard fish the previous time and now we had the grilled squid and shrimp. Finger licking good! Lovely staff and terrace aswell.

Always extremely polite, service minded and helpful. And despite that I arrived rather late and they had almost closed the kitchen, I got my pizza! So thankful. And when I said take away, the staff excused that he was alone and couldn’t deliver it to my room! I wasn’t even thinking about that they could deliver it to my room.

I dont quite fancy being forced to use the menu as a means of saving the staff from cleaning. It takes 2 seconds to wipe the table...but what does it cost to make a menu? ..also there's a bit of a negative vibe when I enquired if it was table service or what...was..just giving 1 so as to highlight the issue, I feel like this place does well off of its views/location and not staff Passion fruit brulee tasted like scrambled egg and sugar too I did enjoy the lads eye roll after I paid never had that before...what an experience .. madeira is so so lovely but I have found the tourist trap..its here be wide! Cable cars nice tho on par if not better than Barcelona x...more value for money and the people from top to bottom are nicer

Restaurant
Nestled at the lower level of Quinta da Casa Branca, The Dining Room restaurant is housed in an elegant Manor House with a classic dining room and an al fresco terrace. It offers a contemporary and inventive cuisine, providing a caring à la carte menu in a refined environment. The restaurant has been recognized for its selection of products, creativity and presentation, mastery of flavor and cooking techniques, value for money, and consistency. This year's assessments have been more flexible due to the disruptions.
We wanted something special for our last day on Madeira, and that restaurant was special indeed. First, for those that may get confused as we were. Once you reach the reception, you need to walk through the garden to reach the restaurant, it's at the far end of the garden. The restaurant itself is fantastic. The service is friendly but very precise. And there was live music all evening long. We went for the set menu, skipping the wine pairings since we don't drink much wine. The food is just as we like it. It's tasty, it's interesting, but it doesn't try to be a piece of art. The starter, pastry with cottage cheese and salmon was delicious. Fish with couscous was even better. And the steak was just perfect. Fantastic food, fantastic service and atmosphere. Highly recommend that place. Price was about 80EU per person, which included four glasses of wine. We did end up drinking quite a lot of it, but that's just because we enjoyed that place so much.

The food was good. Very stingy on the wine pairing. Our glasses were empty half the night. Could have brought us more bread. It’s Michelin Star. That’s. Why we went. Flavors were appealing but want s little more for the hi price.
Donna D — Google review
Even though it seems like a high quality and service restaurant, it’s not very good. They will set aside the bottles of water and wine but forget to refill throughout the whole meal. They messed up the fish orders (we ordered Turbot but got something else). Between starters and main course, it took them more than 50’. Worst thing of all: portions were EXTREMELY little, ridiculously little, and I am not talking about the fixed menu, but about the a la carte dishes. Also, there are very little options as desserts and none of them looked good, so we didn’t order anything. At the end of the dinner (11 pm), after everything was delayed because of them, they started closing the blinds of the terrace like they were kicking us out. Nevertheless, the gardens and surroundings are astonishing.
Alfonso S — Google review
Expecting an experience of their Michelin Star, and tried to roll through the mishaps, but there were too many fails. Water took about 15 minutes to arrive. Sparkling was ordered, flat was served. Later they were mixed together in a validation of the aloof service. Two dry martinis arrived swimming in ice cubes. Inflexible were they when asked if they could substitute any part of the tasting menu for a non-fish eater. Aloof again when they forgot about entire course of their own set menu. The savory courses were average and traditional, not adventurous or worthy of their star. The pastry chef impressed and was a real delight after a mediocre meal.

If I could, I would give 6 stars. We dined at various restaurants in Funchal at much higher prices until we accidentally discovered this place, which we ended up visiting two more times. The dishes were very tasty, portions were generous, and the price was incredibly fair. For two sandwiches, chicken with fries, a beer, and tea, we paid only €31. I highly recommend the shrimp and beef sandwiches.

Great experience, we really enjoyed everything. Top wine pairings, amazing sauces (green sauce with seafood is our favourite), beautiful seafood dishes and rich meat dishes. Nice atmosphere and design. We took a menu of 9 servings. I enjoyed seafood servings a lot, and my husband liked pig and beef. By the end of the journey we had a chance to see kitchen and talk to chefs. As a present before we left we got 2 sets of their handmade chocolates and a piece of handmade cured butter that we liked. I would definitely come back again.

TLDR; This was, beyond a doubt, the best fine dining experience I’ve ever had, and if you’re looking at reviews to make your decision - just book this place. My partner and I always seek to try at least one fine dining establishment in every place we travel to. Unlike all the places we’ve been, which were fantastic in their own right, Desarma combines warm and friendly service with amazing food that featured Madeira flavors. I know, I know…all fine dining places are supposed to have good service, and they usually do. But I can’t stress enough how nice and kind the front of staff were at Desarma. Besides the service, you can look forward to good food that is often paired with unique and tasty sauces. Everything was seasoned and cooked to perfection, and it’s difficult to decide which was my favorite dish of the night. I was so full towards the end yet I managed to finish the last meat main because of how easy (and tasty) it was to eat it. This was truly an unexpected and unforgettable experience. If you’re on the island and looking for fine dining, this place should definitely not be missed.
Cherrie S — Google review
We started off strong with deconstructed dishes, all hints to local products and produce. We thought it had set the tone for the night and we had high expectations. As we led up towards the main dishes it started to feel a little less exclusive and creative. A dish with wagyu and black truffle felt somewhat off to all the dishes we had. That having said, the atmosphere and hospitality we’re exceptional. Perhaps you can check socials off others to see whats on the menu and see if it feel worth trying. If you go, try and see if you can get a pot at the kitchen. It looked very sereen!
Laura J — Google review
If you’re in Funchal and want a truly unforgettable dining experience, Desarma is an absolute must. We went for The Chef’s Battle – 9 Moments Menu with the wine pairing, and wow… what a ride! Every dish felt like a little love letter to the ingredients — familiar, organic flavors taken to a whole new level of creativity. You can tell that every single element on the plate is honored and celebrated, not just thrown in for show. It’s the kind of food that makes you close your eyes and wish you could hit “replay” after every bite. The wine pairing? Bold, daring, and spot on — surprising in the best way. It didn’t just complement the dishes; it told its own little story alongside them, pushing the experience even further. And then there’s the vibe: a beautiful, open kitchen where you can see the magic happening, chic decoration with just the right amount of cool, and a terrace view that’s so stunning it feels like a movie set. Add to that a team that’s warm, professional, and genuinely passionate about what they do, and you’ve got a night that feels both relaxed and absolutely special.
Ana G — Google review
Every dish is an explosion of flavour and perfection. Service was very good. Restaurant is beautiful with ocean view and open kitchen. There were 2 small problem I did not like that I was very enjoy their break it was nice and warm then I asked for a second piece which was not same temperature as the first one it was room temperature and it’s a turn off for me., then at the end there was 1 piece of chocolate has roasted wheat which was very hard to break it down I was trying to break it down to taste the flavour but I gave up because I don’t want to maybe crack my teeth. Other than that everything was a perfection. Thanks to all the chefs and staffs. Abrigado🙏🇨🇦

An all-timer exceptional meal celebrating the local history and bounty of Madeira! We had the joy, privilege, and pleasure of savoring the 12 course tasting menu with Portuguese wine pairings at the Chef’s Table (counter surrounding the kitchen) and had a close view of the chefs in harmonious action. The front of house staff (Eduardo), chefs (shout out pastry chef and king of sourdough bread Bruno), and sommelier (Joao - laser focused and intent on making every pairing better than the last, traditional rules and stodgy thinking need not apply here) were so friendly, approachable, enthusiastic, and willing to share their knowledge that they massively enhanced our experience and made this a night we will never forget. Cannot recommend highly enough… mastery of technique, craft, flavor, presentation, and service on display.

Super friendly service from the team with a delightful sense of humour. Delicious Pastel de Nata made from an exceptional secret recipe. Caters for tourists in multiple languages as well. Toilets available. We had a lovely time. Many thanks.

I love the friendly atmosphere which compliments the wonderful food and delicious pastries. They also have a wonderful collection of teas and coffee. Great place for breakfast to dinner

A perfect place for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We visited it a few times during our stay to try as many dishes as possible since they were delicious and fresh. Once we got there first time there was no point looking for another place to have a meal. We got grilled salmon (one of the best I’ve ever had!), milho frito, codfish croquetes, espada, pamcakes pastel de nata, bolo de mel, different types of lemonade and coffee, toasts with avocados and scrambled eggs, croissants with ham and cheese, carbonara and pasta with veggies. The place is quite cheap in comparison to other places in the city which don’t serve as good and as big dishes as Pimenthina. Go there if you are starving- the portions are enormous and we sometimes had a struggle to finish the dishes up 😅 the staff is cheerful and chatty, happy to serve and feed you 😅 when the weather’s fine it’s nice to sit outside and absorb the city’s atmosphere with your meal. Highly reccomend and will definitely come back there if I ever visit Madeira again :)

Pimentinha is a charming little cafe in Funchal, conveniently located close to where we stayed. The cafe offers both outdoor and indoor seating, creating a pleasant and versatile dining environment. They have a good spread of food options, including vegetarian dishes, which was a big plus for us. We particularly loved the fresh orange juice—absolutely delicious! A breakfast for two costs around €20-25, which we found to be quite reasonable for the quality and portion sizes. The staff were polite and humble, and the presentation of the food items was impressive. Overall, a great place for a relaxed and enjoyable meal.

Place full of friendly people and delicious food wich is well spiced and the portions are huge. The only bad thing about this place are fresh but not fully grown tomato. Food do not cost too much. Place is worth visiting I would defend recommend it

Ok first of all the puff pastry whit sausage tasted a little bit... Not right... The puff pastry was a little bit molten and the sausage tasted off. And everytime we came, it was "closed". I don't know if they think we pop out of bed and instantly teleport there or so. But the closing times are crazy.

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Funchal's historic Zona Velha, Santa Maria is a charming restaurant that beautifully blends traditional Madeira culture with modern culinary flair. Housed in a former elementary school, this eatery boasts stunning centenary architecture and is just a short stroll from the bustling city center and picturesque seafront. Guests are treated to an enticing menu featuring authentic Portuguese dishes alongside innovative sushi options, making it a delightful spot for food lovers.
Perfect in every way!! This is a little further down the street, and is a lovely place with the best food. We had the grilled limpits, tuna, black scabbard. All very well cooked and well presented. The price is super reasonable as well. Desserts are very good. We even got Madeira wine on the house at the end. 😊 Amazing- must try!

My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant during our honeymoon. The food here was absolutely amazing! I had the pesto risotto with salmon and my husband had the octopus. Both of our dishes were so delicious that we came back to the restaurant the next day and ordered each other's original meals. We still think about how delicious this food was and if we ever go back to Madeira, this is the first place we're eating.

I’m not particularly fond of meat, so after two days of the regional beef skewer I was ready for something vegetarian. The risotto with sun-dried tomatoes and rocket was superb. My companion had fresh tuna and beef to cook on a hot stone. The service was outstanding, and I would certainly recommend booking a table in advance. And the waiter had a velvety voice – he sounded just like James Bond.

We stopped here for lunch, and it was the best decision. The food was very good compared to everything else we ate in Madeira. The staff was friendly and fast, so we decided to return today for lunch. They also serve sushi after 18.30, so maybe we ll come back for that as well. Keep up the good work! Thanks!

I’ve ordered “Portuguese style steak with potatoes” and I must say, it was delicious. The sauce was a little too salty but still good dish! Totally recommend!

Found Santa Maria whilst strolling through the streets and having checked out previous recommendations we decided to order. We were not disappointed as the meal was delicious and plentiful and steak on the stone an absolute delight. The service was equally excellent. Highly recommend this little gem.

I chose this place based on reviews, usually the crowd is right, but not on this one. I rarely write reviews, but I couldn’t let this one go. The service was terrible, not a smile in sight. My 15 year old son turned to me, unprovoked, and said, “ all the people that work here look like Tim Burton characters…”he wasn’t wrong. There was a “blond” woman who seemed to run the place, proceeded to get into a spat with the neighboring restaurant manager. Still not sure about what, but the staff from that restaurant ( O Regional) were friendlier to us, the waiter turned to us and said “bon appetit!”. She knocked into me everytime she picked up a plate up or put it down, not just a bump, she pushed me out of her way. The whole energy was wet moppish and soggy toast, with a splash of, “we gave our last f@&$! Last week.” It’s a tourist trap, the food is fine but if you make a little effort, ask the locals, for restaurant options with real local flavor. Just to give you a sense of how much of a tourist trap it is, the menu book came in 4 or 5 different languages, local places come in Portuguese and English. Spare yourself!

The food was good, with decent portion sizes. A highlight is that they offer the option to grill your steak on a hot stone right in front of you. The decor is interesting, and the location is excellent, right in the city center. The waiters seemed a bit indifferent and could be friendlier and more attentive, but to be fair, they were quite busy.
