Museo Naval - Barco de la Virgen is a small maritime museum located in the heart of town, featuring a concrete replica of Christopher Columbus's flagship, the Santa Maria. The museum showcases the history of Spanish conquests and seafaring on La Palma, with exhibits on naval artifacts and the island's maritime heritage. Visitors can explore the replica ship and learn about its historical significance.
Nice little museum built to look like Christopher Columbus’ flagship Santa Maria. You can find there a bit about the history of the Island and some naval artifacts. A nice short about half an hour long visit.
Jiri V — Google review
This museum is kind of hard to miss when you are driving down the street in La Palma. It is literally a ship on the side of the road. I think we paid 5 euro each to go inside. There were quite a few artifacts and documents displayed in this museum. For its size, it is very well put together. I have never really been interested in reading all of the signs in museums, so I can not speak to what was written. I am more of a visual person. There were a few interesting things to see.
Paul K — Google review
It wasn't open when we arrived. It is an impressive replica.
Tom Y — Google review
Inside the ship you can see beautiful maketts and read interesting information about how the island became an important port. Upstairs you can feel like a captain even if you are not a child. The experiment worth the 4,5 euros entrance free. Open at weekends too.
Judit V — Google review
Pretty empress museum with a replica of the ship on top. Host was very good. Plenty of model shops and artifacts of the era. Access via stairs to be on deck with great views.
David V — Google review
Nice boat, but not the original Santa Maria. A few interesting things in the museum but we were disappointed, because we thought it’s a replica of the original do we could see how Columbus traveled. But there are no rooms like that. 4,50€ entrance fee.
MAGIC O — Google review
We came across this replica ship of Christopher Colombus's ship Santa Maria with a maritime museum in it, which unfortunately was closed. Worth a look if you nearby, but not worth a special journey unless you know the museum is open. Their is a bust of him too in the square in front of the ship.

Museo Insular de La Palma is a captivating museum located in a former 16th-century monastery, offering an array of diverse exhibits. Visitors can explore Guanche skulls, stuffed birds, pickled reptiles, and an impressive shell and coral collection. The museum also features galleries dedicated to 20th-century Spanish paintings and contemporary art. Additionally, the building houses a music school that often provides unexpected live performances.
Old monastery which houses artwork from several centuries. Quite a lot of modern art. Fascinating collection of stuffed animals! Also a small expo of ship building tools. Has an active library as well!
Arno N — Google review
A beautiful museum in a beautiful building. The gentleman who greeted me was very friendly and kind. Lots of interesting things to see. Only 2e for residents and 4e for non residents. You can spend at least 1 or 2 hours (or more!) looking at everything so it's worth it and a good price!
Tracy E — Google review
Yoo will encounter three museums in one. A modern art museum with some temporary exhibition changing along the years, a classical and historical painting with some local painters, and geological and biological museum at the ground floor showing what you can find in and around the island. The entrance cost 4eur and you can visit all the museum in about one hour and half.
Brice P — Google review
A great museum. Spectacular courtyard and architecture and impressive art. The exhibition contains many classic artworks as well as contemporary work. There is also expressionistic and abstract art exhibited, even containing two Mirós. While most of the exhibition consists of art, there also is a small but cute library and an exhibition about naves, sea biology and La Palmas birds. We had to pay no entrance fee, despite the signs outside showing a price list. I can only recommend visiting the Museo Insular de La Palma!
Lisa — Google review
An interesting selection of art, natural history and artifacts in an old convent building in Santa Cruz. Worth a visit just to see the building.
Steve H — Google review
Nice local museum. Beautiful cc courtyard.
TravelingDave — Google review
The museum was a big surprise. When we arrived we where greeted by a nice lady who told us where everything was located. To our surprise we didn't have to pay to enter even though there was a price list outside. The Museum is a former Monestary so the architecture is very nice, especially the smaller courtyard. The Museum has a (for its small size) large variety of artworks ranging from religious paintings and other realistic paintings to modern artwork. We even found some hidden gems like two Miró sketches and a painting and sculpture from Günter Grass. The exhibiton on the local artist Carmen Arozena and the competition founded in here honor was definitely a highlight. The museum generally house a lot of local artists or artworks inspired by the island. Apart from the artworks the museum also has an exhibition on (local) biology with many specimens on display. There is also a room about the textile industry and traditional garments as well as a room about cosmetic history. The Museum also houses a library and has a small museums shop. 10/10 whould recommended (even if we had to pay to enter it whould have only been around 4€ so very reasonable)
Nona R — Google review
I agree with previous reviewers, this really is a delight. There are a variety of thoughtfully restored/preserved items, old and new, and it really gives a sense of the island's cultural history. Lovely building and helpful staff too. Pretty good value at four euros I reckon.

Lookouts
Mirador de La Concepción is a popular craterside lookout offering stunning views of the port, mountains, city lights, and sunsets. It's a paradise for sports enthusiasts with numerous forest trails for mountain biking and nearly one thousand kilometers of footpaths for hiking. The area also includes suburbs like Mirca and Veloco, as well as the sanctuary of Las Nieves and La Dehesa.
Wonderful trail which you can start from the parkplaces by the beach. The trail can be a little bit step at times and maybe sometimes you can possibly miss the marking of the trail which we did and then took a little longer by going by the street but still a nice trail more through different streets. At points you have already a nice view to the sea. The view at the top is marvelous. The trail itself is not so hard and would not put it as being hard but maybe for some might be a little harder because it can be step at times but generally it was nice. Would definitely recommend it and after coming down getting an ice cream and then going swimming in the ocean.

Superb view over the city of Santa Cruz and surrounding area. If your going by car, leave it on the parking lot and walk past the cell cervice tower onto the very edge of the cliff. Just be careful and watch your step!

Awesome view over Santa Cruz and all around. From there you should be able to see some Red-billed chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorac) and I even had the chance to see a Gecko (Tarentola delalandii) sunbathing :D Pretty common but nice to see for real. I came by foot from the city centre of Santa Cruz, nice walk if you're not afraid from steep/more or less narrow streets. Beautiful houses to see on the way and a couple of buses to reach the place!

Real Castillo de Santa Catalina, located in Santa Cruz de La Palma, is a former royal castle with a rich history dating back to the sixteenth century. Built in 1692 from black lava stone by Italian master builder Leonardo Torriani, it served as a military fortress until 1808. Designated as a national historical monument since 1951, this square-shaped building with diamond bastions was originally constructed for defensive purposes against English pirate attacks.

The fort stands proud on the promenade of Santa Cruz de la Palma. You are only able to climb atop of the fort, and there is no entry inside of it. Access to the roof can be accessed by either street to the side of it, and along the road behind it. There are plenty of canons as well as views out over the beach. Could do with more information.

Nice Fort on a hill. Awesome views of area. Bit tricky to get to by car, walking wise it's less time but you have a long upgrade to the top. Overall, worth it for the views.
David V — Google review
I would say it's a hidden gem of the city because you don't usually see it promoted as much as it should. It's always freshly painted in pure, nuclear white, making the light of the ocean reflect incredibly on the entire place. Definitely recommend for a quick hike and adventure.
Don B — Google review
Visited here last summer when on a cruise, this was on the second trip in La Palma. If you are able to walk the hill, it is extremely worth it and offers some amazing photo opportunities. About 30 or 45 minutes will be more than enough to spend here.
Henry B — Google review

Nice historical Fort on a hill. Awesome views of area. Bit tricky to get to by car, if going by car head to the very end of the beach and turn left just past the crossing lights. be careful as the turn as the turn is just after this. You enter a one way system and if you can’t park directly there just follow the road round and there is parking on the hill. To be fair you can walk to this by walking along the beach of the main high street you have a reasonable walk to the top. Overall, worth it for the views. Cheers

Churches & Cathedrals
The Iglesia Matriz de El Salvador, located in La Palma, is a significant architectural landmark alongside the city hall. Constructed by Spanish invaders at the end of the 15th century and rebuilt in 1553 after being destroyed by a famous French pirate, its whitewashed facade features an elegant Renaissance stone portal and a Plateresque tower with four bells.
This Cathedral is worth the walk to come and see. We arrived as they prepared for the Good Friday celebrations, so much activity that made the trip even more special. There are lots of steps to get to to enter, inside a World of God, gold shrines and high ceilings. They do look after this church in keeping with the old and traditional. Well recommended a visit.
Renato L — Google review
Beautiful little church! I respect the fact that the Catholic church loves to make individual works of art in every building, which makes them all wonderful to look at, but I don't believe that it is bringing people to God or helping people into heaven. After endless years of building and pouring money into these places, some of them taking literally 100 years to build, most of them turn into museums. That does not pour into God's kingdom. A church building should be nothing more than a meeting place that Christians can go to where they can grow as Christians by learning about God through His word so they can grow spiritually. If the money and effort put into these buildings is more artistic than practical, it is poor stewardship of the money that God has blessed the church with.
Paul K — Google review
Lovely little church in the middle of La Palma. Like most churches it's lavished with gold, fancy artworks and plenty of carved statues and ornaments. Worth checking out. But like others say, Church's are slowly becoming tourist attractions rather than being used as their sole purpose.

Terrific. Never visited La Palma before and was really surprised to discover this church tucked away in a square. As ever even the smallest churches in Spain are elaborate and this one is no exception. An added bonus was a local dance took place and added to the occasion.

Playa de Bajamar is a popular black-sand beach on the east side of La Palma, less than 10 minutes' walk from Santa Cruz de La Palma. It's a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike, offering a 700-meter stretch of dark sand and gentle waves thanks to its breakwater. The beach features a children's playground right on the sand, making it an ideal destination for families.
this place was great!!!!! if you go over to the rocks (before midday) there are loads of crabs, black ones that are well camouflaged and red ones. they are pretty awesome. felt very nice and not too busy, however, bring shoes because the black sand gets so hot it burns your feet!!!!

Its a pleasant looking beach close to the marina and harbour. There are plenty of cafe's within walking distance to grab drinks and or food. Not a typical sandy beach but none the less a beach.
Keith B — Google review
Until recently this was known as "the new beach" of Santa Cruz de La Palma. As far as I know it was commissioned in the nineties. Now there is a newer and bigger beach for Santa Cruz that is better, but still can not beat the atmosphere of Bajamar. The mix between the vertical stone wall on the one side and the ocean on the other is pretty unique. You can also enjoy a first row view to the port and the visiting cruise ships. There are a couple of nice kiosks if you need a drink or a quick bite. You can get there by a short and convenient walk from Santa Cruz.

Balcones de la Avenida Marítima is a must-see attraction in Santa Cruz de la Palma, featuring wooden balconies on colorful houses that date back to the 16th and 17th centuries. These balconies are adorned with flowers and have become a symbol of the city, thanks to the efforts of German immigrant Heiko Bartsch who brought them to life with vibrant floral displays.
We visited the capital and found it a little underwhelming; however, we were drawn to the old balconies whilst passing. The seafront opposite is quite appealing, too; however, with it being volcanic, it's completely black.

Maroparque Isla de La Palma, also known as Fundación Maroparque, is a hillside zoo located just outside Santa Cruz de La Palma in Brena Alta. The park is home to a diverse range of exotic animals, including porcupines, monkeys, snakes, albino kangaroos, various bird species like parrots and peacocks, and even crocodiles.
Small, but a very different kind of animal park. All animals are rescued and the park itself is a non-profit organisation so you know that the ticket money goes to a good cause. What was surprising the most is how friendly the animals are, especially the birds. They fly close to you when you enter the walk-in cages. They expect food ofcourse, but that never happened in any other zoos i visited.

I loved my trip to Maroparque. I came with all the family and both the kids and us adults had the greatest time! The animals are very well cared for and we were even given the opportunity to feed them. The workers of the park are great. If you are in La Palma, I 100% recommend taking the time to visit Maroparque ❤️

The parrots here made our day. Very thoughtful of this guys to take care of animals that are in the need. It take 1h30 min to see all the animals and spend some time with the birds. They do love to eat peanuts and seeds.
Sebulba — Google review
The place looks like it has known better days and that goes for the animals too. Some of them look stressed. I do like a good zoo that supports animals that are close to extinction and keep everything up to date. We had our doubts about this one.
Erik S — Google review
Great place to spend a few hours, as it's a relatively small zoo. Buy the feed for the animals, although pay attention to which animals have which food type.
Luke G — Google review
Unique and incredible experience! You get to feed the animals the different types of feed they like, and the variety is incredible. You’re even able to walk through the enclosures with them. Watch out though, the monkeys and parrots are very very friendly 😂😂🤩
Anastasia M — Google review
We found this small rescue „zoo“ very authentic. Box of snacks is 2€, buy more peanuts 🥜 boxes as they are the most favorite from all the birds, we didn’t know that and our one box was empty was too soon) also was a fun experience to „communicate“ with the birds, although a bit scary 😅

Playa de los Cancajos is a popular volcanic black-sand beach in La Palma, surrounded by striking rock formations that extend into the sea. The area features calm waters ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The beach's rocky breakwater helps maintain tranquil conditions for water activities. It is known for its abundant marine life, making it a prime spot for exploring La Palma's underwater world.
Nice beach with good snorkelling on the right hand side (looking towards the sea) by the rocks. I saw red parrot fish, trumpet fish, puffer fish plus shoals of smaller fish.Stony, so beach shoes are needed if you are going in the water. There are restaurants and shops quite near including a dive shop.

This beach was really pretty. Flying a drone here is not possible because it is in a restricted flight zone. I run into this quite often. It seems as though all of the pretty beaches are very close to an airport or in the flight path. There are bathrooms available at this beach, and it is close to the ship port. Many rock formations and black volcanic sand.

Free admission, free, chilled water and exhibits by local artists. I was moved to tears when I saw paintings that local children had painted to help them make sense of the recent volcano eruption. Bless them, these pictures realised the horrors in pretty much the same way that the paintings by children in the concentration camps of WW2 that I saw in Prague’s Jewish Museum did. It’s heartbreaking to know that anyone witnessed the eruption let alone youngsters.

Hiking area
Nacientes de Marcos y Cordero is a remarkable water channel system consisting of 13 rock-cut tunnels that visitors can traverse. Upon exiting tunnel number 12, the impressive Marcos spring gushes water directly from the rock. A short uphill climb and the thirteenth tunnel lead to the Cordero spring, comprised of three cascades. The area also features various viewpoints and a stunning waterfall that hikers can cross if they're feeling adventurous.
So far my favorite ❤️ thing to do. Is a nice walk through the tunnels. But the rest was closed and had to return back same track. Taxi is best to take you up and down to your car. Otherwise you have another 2 hours each way. Not easy hick up or down to the location. The tunnels are safe. Hiking shoes, flashlights and rain poncho works best. Tunnel 12 is most dangerous it will get you wet and very low in a section.
Victoria G — Google review
As someone who was here before they closed the path to Los Tilos, I must say the hikers now miss the most beautiful, calming and refreshing part of the root - down from thevlast tunnel to Los Tilos thru Centro de visitantes. Now the trail thru tunnels is very crowded, there is traffic in tunnels that makes you do acrobatics with strangers to get your way. Also imho the tunnels show how people take whatever they want from the nature, leaving the habitat without water in this case. If the path to Los Tilos was open, you'd find yourself walking down what used to be a spring or even a river, but today is lifeless and dry... As an experience I can totally recommend visiting, but of course as other people have already mentioned, it requires a solution for toilets and/or education of visitors that they cannot just leave their waste and wet wipes in the middle of the trail.
Wall- E — Google review
Very nice hike, not as difficult as they say. the road to get there is difficult, but the hike itself is not difficult
Puscau C — Google review
Best places on the whole island. This is a must see, when you are in La Palma. You need a taxi to get there, which can be either ordered in advance, or with a bit of luck, you can get at directly at the parking place. Plan one day for this area and make sure to visit Mirador Espigón Atravesado when heading down to the parking place
ForeverFree — Google review
Beautiful hike with spectacular scenery! Highly recommended! Since there is a lot of misinformation I will share a bit about its current state (as of 23.01.2024). Before you go check the current status on La Palma's info pages as things can change quickly! The traditional path through the tunnels and then down to Los Tilos is officially closed after the tunnel section. However, the path itself is not damaged and totally intact. The only section that is really damaged is the last part of the road to the visitor center in Los Tilos (unfortunately this means that the waterfalls are not accessible). Which means there are two options. Either go through the tunnels and then return the same way back. Or go through the tunnels and hike down the "closed" path to Los Tilos (which is fine and beautiful) and an additional hour of hiking down the road to reach the main road and car park again (you will not have to pass the damaged part, as it is not on the hiking route!). In both cases you need a taxi to bring you to the starting point (casa de monte). It costs about 17,5€ per person. And like other people mentioned, the taxi is really needed. Plan about 5-6h for the whole hike. Regarding tunnel 12: yes, you will get wet (walk through water and water coming from the top), but it is also the most exciting one. Be prepared. Btw, I just took my shoes off and went bare foot through, because I didn't want them to be soaked. Worked fine. Head lamps are very useful. If you take care of your head, you'll be fine without helmet (it's not checked anywhere if you wear one). Be careful and enjoy a lot!

Museum
Ok the museum is open from 10am to 16.00pm wednesday to sunday. 4 euros or 2.50 for residents or pensioners. It is quite remarkable the quality and quantity of the items on display and simply looking at the pictures here do not show off the incredible work involved. I do not understand why the museum is not advertised as much as it should be. One item stood out for me and i believe it is unique and that is a window from the room to the church altar, i had to revisit the church to understand where it was. Las Nieves is and should be a day out for everyone who visits this island. The museum curator is very helpful and spoke to me in perfect English, thank you.

A truly wonderful museum from several points of view. The exhibits, layout and the building that houses it are all first rate. A must if you’re visiting La Palma. It has the extra attraction of being adjacent to the principal church of the island, with its marvellous rococo interior. The church has its own resident very friendly cat. The sad thing is that at the time of writing (21/9/24), it is closed. I’m told there’s a problem with the financing yet to be resolved.

Monumento a El Enano is a charming bronze statue located in Plaza de la Alameda, near the Naval Museum. It has been standing there since 1905 and represents an important local festivity. The statue depicts a figure with a giant hat, believed to be a dwarf, and is a popular spot for taking photos. Surrounded by a beautiful environment with the Barco de la Virgen in the background, it's an essential visit when in the area.
Nothing can't even start to compare to the mighty Enano. Jokes aside. It's a very beautiful monument for the most important holiday in the island, la Bajada. If you want to take a bit of the island with you. You have to check this place out.
Don B — Google review
Founded in 1493 by Spanish conquistador Alonso Fernández de Lugo, Santa Cruz de La Palma became a strategic Canary Islands port, attracting pirate attacks like François Le Clerc's devastating 1553 siege. This led to fortified defenses, including the still-standing Castillo de Santa Catalina. The city's wealth from sugarcane trade fostered a multicultural legacy. Flemish merchants influenced local art, seen in churches like El Salvador, while Irish trader Dionisio O'Daly pioneered Spain’s first democratic elections (1773). Architecturally, it boasts the Renaissance Plaza de España(the Canaries' finest), traditional balconied houses along Avenida Marítima, and the Barco de la Virgen (a replica Columbus ship). Its preserved historic center is a designated Cultural Asset . Living traditions define its identity: - Los Indianos Carnival : A talcum-powder battle satirizing emigrants who returned wealthy from the Americas. - Bajada de la Virgen : Every 5 years (next 2025), the island’s patron saint is paraded amid the UNESCO-recognized *Danza de los Enanos* (Dance of the Dwarfs). Despite Netflix’s 2024 drama *La Palma* depicting a fictional tsunami, the city has never faced such disaster . The real Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted recently (2021), causing property damage but no fatalities or tsunamis. Scientific consensus rejects "mega-tsunami" theories. Modern Santa Cruz transitioned from sugarcane to tourism , adding an artificial black-sand beach (2017) while retaining its historic charm in neighborhoods like San Telmo. Key Events City Founding ,1493 -Strategic Atlantic port Pirate Sack, 1553 -Boosted defenses First Elections,1773- Democratic milestone Recent Eruption, 2021-Economic damage, no tsunami Santa Cruz remains a captivating blend of pirate history, artistic heritage, and volcanic resilience—its authentic story outshining fiction.
