It is considered to be the foremost and one of the largest temple tanks in Tamil Nadu. The tank covers an area of 6.2 acres and is trapezoidal in shape. The tank is surrounded by 16 small Mandapams (shrines) and has 21 wells inside the tank. Govinda Dikshitar, the chieftain of Ragunatha Nayak of Thanjavur, constructed the sixteen Mandapams and stone steps around this tank.

Surrounded by temples and this tank has Mantaps to host murthys of near by Shiva and Vishnu temples. Holy place and very few get this lifetime opportunities. Appears to be neglected. Once in 12 years people gather to bathe in the tank. Waters of all the sacred rivers are supposed to flow into the tank and mingle. Like the Mahakumbha mela, the Maha Maham also occurs every 12 years. The next such event will be on 2028.

Every stone carving feels alive — from delicate dancers and musicians to mythological stories sculpted with precision. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Airavatesvara, named after Airavata, the white elephant of Indra, who is believed to have worshipped Shiva at this site. The highlight is the stone chariot-shaped front mandapa and the musical steps that produce notes when tapped — a brilliant example of Chola craftsmanship and engineering. The auto driver was telling that he will take us to few other temples on the way but we said no. I visited this temple on a weekday. The temple was not crowded It has steep steps to climb . Roughly around 15 steps . Chakrathalwar is the main diety and sudarshanavalli Thayar is also along with HIM . Moolavar and uthsavar are in the same Sannidhi . The Archakar did good archanai when we went . There is a separate Thayar Sannidhi also The temple is small . There was no crowd when we went

Visited on today evening .Nageswaraswamy Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva located in Kumbakonam , Tamil Nadu, India. The presiding deity is revered in the 7th-century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram, written by Tamil poet saints known as the nayanars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. It was not crowded. It is a huge complex surrounded by a high wall boundary.

Very famous temple of Vishnu. You can expect a crowd here. On regular days not much crowd. On festival days we may need to wait for anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes.

I visited Oppiliappan temple two days ago . Not too crowded and you can stand in front of HIM for a long time . The aura is great No separate Sannidhi for Thayar . The temple is small and variety of puja options are available. The temple is one of the Divyadesams. Thirumangai Alwar and nammalwar have sung pasurams on this Perumal . Markandeyar is also there in the garbagriham Thayar is in sitting posture . In kalyana thirukolam Abhishekam is done daily if there are bookings for it . It is absolute bliss to have darshan of HiS abhishekam

Visited Oppaliappa Temple on 1st Nov and was impressed by its cleanliness and maintenance. Devotees can purchase salt, jaggery, and pepper to offer to the deity. The Kalyani/Pushkarni was particularly well-maintained. A note to fellow devotees: the prasadam served at the temple is saltless, as per the deity's tradition. Let's all make an effort to cherish and not waste this sacred offering 🙏.

Here lord sarabeswarar in the deity to be worshipped on Sunday rahu kalam between 4.30pm to 6 pm. 11 deepam, 11 times praharam and 11 weeks continuous worship may lead to all success. Very powerful god.

Kampaheswarar Temple, Thirubuvanam Thanjavur district A beautiful Dravidian Architectural Temple of Chola Dynasty.

If you love temple architecture, this surely is a place to visit. There is a legend that shiva killed eight Asuras and those places where he killed them is known as veerattanam temples. This is one among them. This is very near to Kumbakonam. There are many sculptures that are treat to eyes. One particular a combo of a bull and elephant is worth seeing. It is to your right side wall when you do circumambulation of the main deity. The sarabeshwarar is half animal and half beast. The silk saree of this temple town is another next only to the famed kanchipuram.

This temple wasn’t part of our trip itinerary but we were asked to visit the place by locals who said it’s a must visit. The main deity of the temple is Lord Vishnu In the form of Vedanarayana Perumal. There’s also a sanctum for Lord Brahma and Narasimha. There aren’t many temples dedicated to Lord Brahma - the creator. It’s a quaint lovely temple. It’s located at a walkable distance from the Mahamaham tank.

Famous temple. Main presiding deity is Vishnu along with his consorts. In adjoining sannidhi Brahma is present with Gayatri and Saraswati. In another sannidhi Narsimha is there.

Remind you about Vedas. This is one of very few temples having deties of Lord Brahma and his consort Sri Saraswati and Gayatri devi.

Great temple of Lord Sri Naganatha Swami. Temple maintained very well. Mobile phones are not allowed inside the temple, better to leave it safely in the vehicle. Flowers, garlands, coconut, fruits are available within the temple premises.

I have uploaded the list of temples in Kumbakonam. For Navagraha ( 9 temples ) we need to plan 1 or 2 days.. If we start by car in the morning at 5 am from Kumbakonam, we can cover by 9 pM and reach Kumbakonam... Or will cover in next day... To visit Navagraha temples..please plan 2 days accordingly... Panchavan Madhevi Pallipadai - A Shivan temple built on top of the remains of the Queen Panchavan Madhevi. This temple was built by Rajendra Chola I in remembrance of his beloved Step Mother Panchavan Madhevi. She spent most of her life in grooming her step son Rajendra to become one of the greatest warriors in Tamil history. There is a verbal information that she ate some herbal medicine to make herself sterile, so that there won't be another child in line for the throne. Since Panchavan Madhevi was the Daughter of Pazhuvettaraiyar, to honour the family line, the Architecture of this temple is based on Pazhuvettaraiyar's Architecture. Especially the Nandhi and Lingam are the best examples of their Architecture. Also in this temple, the inscriptions are seen throughout the walls, but it is said that the word 'Pallipadai' was erased from the inscriptions by the Pandyas when they conquered (Glad that they didn't destroy everything). One of the few pallipadai temples that exists today.

PANCHAVANA MADEVI PALLIPADAI TEMPLE - PATTEESWARAM - TAMILNADU HISTORY Raja Raja Chola 1 (985 - 1014) was born in 947 CE as Arul Mozhi Varman and was perhaps the greatest King of the Chola dynasty under whose rule the mediaeval Cholas reached their zenith. He had many wives & his second wife Vanavana (Tribhuvana) Maadevi bore him his progeny and only son Rajendra Chola 1(1014-1044). Rajendra became a greater King than Raja Raja himself and extended the Chola territory upto the Krishna river and led a successful military campaign upto Bengal through Odisha and brought the Ganges water for secretion of his great edifice, the Brihadeeshwara temple ( Not Tanjore) at the temple water tank called " Chola Gangam " in GangaiKondaCholaPuram his new capital. In 1025 CE his naval fleet led a successful campaign against King Srivijaya of Malay Peninsula which included, southern Malasia, Thailand, Myanmar & Sumatra in Indonesia and brought them under the Chola control. However Rajendra Chola was brought up by the 3rd queen of Raja Raja Chola named Panchavana Maadevi. Panchavana Maadevi was the daughter of Avani Kundarpa Purathu Devan, the cheiftain of Pazhuvettaraiar clan, that were vassals of the Chola's in Pazhuvur. She was a brave queen and seems to have accompanied Rajendra Chola in his war campaign's. She was also a generous patron for many a temple's with her gift of icons made of gold and other metals. Tribhuvana Madeviar the wife of Raja Raja Chola1, & the biological mother of Rajendra Chola 1 extracted a promise from Panchavana Maadevi, that she will never have children of her own and entrusted her child Rajendra Chola 1 to Panchavana for bringing him up. So attached was she with her step-son Rajendra Chola 1, that she wanted him to be the king and successor of Raja Raja Chola 1. Being steadfast in this motive,she denied herself, of becoming a mother by consuming herbal concoctions to avoid conceiving. Rajendra Chola's love and affection for his stepmother was so steadfast that he built this beautiful temple in her memory over her grave ( Pallipadai) which is known as Panchavana Maadevishwaram. The term Pallipaduthal in Tamil refers to the temples built on the resting places(graves) of Monarchs or sages. TEMPLE The Panchavana Maadeviar Ishwarathu Mahadev temple is dedicated to Shiva & Parvati, as the Cholas were renowned for being staunch Shaivaites. A three tiered Gopuram leads to a rectangular compound which encompasses the temple. You are accosted by two dreadful looking Dwarapalaka's on the wall on each side of the entrance to the Mukhamandapam. The Mukhamandapam leads to an Ardhamandapam which in turn leads to the Sanctum of Mahadev facing east. The entrance to the sanctum is lined up on each side by another set of two exquisitely carved Dwarapalaka's in contrast to the Ones outside. A beautiful small Nandi sits in the centre of the Ardhamandapam facing the lord .The Lingam is a small six faceted one of about two feet resplendent in the Garbhahriha. Was the temple pre existing the Chola's, seems so, as one of the Pillars in the Mukhamandapam looks similar to the Simha pillars of the Pallava's in Mahabalipuram or Kanchi. In fact the Idols of Dakshinamurthy & Bhikhshatana on the Devakoshtha is supposed to be from the pallava period of Nandi Varman (710-715 CE). The sanctum of Parvati is facing south attached to the Mukhamandapam where she stands at about three feet.

This temple is called as Panchavan Mahadeviswaram or Panchavan Mahadevi Pallippadai (Pallippadai means, the temple built in honour of the dead of king or queen), this memorial is dedicated by Rajendra Chozha to his step mother Panchavan Maha Devi. Need to take care of this historical place to our next generation.

Deserted place in the middle of a plaintain grooves. Not another usual temple, u may wanna browse history if u intend to know the place. Built by Rajendra chola as a memorial to her step mother Panjavan mathavi after her demise. One of those ladies who stood out in a crowd of men era. It's an etherial bliss to just think of the great lady and de great Rajaraja!!!

A beautiful Kanchi Mutt with Kamachi devi. Inside previous Acharyas of three Acharyas brindavan and a cow shala also there. More divine place. Please follow the rules and worship Kamachi and other Acharyas.

This is where the Paramacharya of Kanchi spent early years of Sanyasa. The building still holds the ancient structure. Heavenly vibes. If you visit the mutt, ask the staff to show you the way to the room in which Maha Periyava stayed, the vibes I found In that room were similar to what I realised at Thenambakkam. I personally strongly felt his presence in that room at the KMU Mutt. :)

A really great place to visit in kumbakonam.it has Brindhavanam of 3 Shankaracharya Swami's of Kanchipuram matham. The place very calm and Acharyas shower their devine grace till date. One must not miss this place'if they plan for a trip to Kumbakonam.

Head Quarters of Kancheepurum Sankara Mutt. You can find Brindavana of Maha Periyavaa and Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal. You can have Darshan of Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal if he is not camping outside. It is very close to Kanchi Kamatchi Amman Temple.

Located near Kumbakonam, the temple offers a serene and divine atmosphere. Had a great darshan of Lord Murugan, visiting the temple around 8:30 PM and again the next morning at 7 AM. Both visits were peaceful and spiritually uplifting, with smooth darshan and a serene atmosphere. A truly divine experience. Locker facilities are available for mobile phones, and special darshan tickets cost ₹100 per person. Temple timings are clearly displayed—6 AM to 1 PM and 4 PM to 9 PM—so planning your visit is easy. It is unfortunate to see people leaving 1-star reviews for trivial reasons like timings or priests requesting offerings. The temple is a spiritually enriching place and deserves to be appreciated for its sanctity, heritage, and well-maintained environment.

The temple is currently closed. Google Maps shows the reopening time as 3:30 PM, but the correct opening time is 4:00 PM. This incorrect timing misled us and caused inconvenience, so requesting Google to update the temple hours. Also note that cell phones must be deposited before entering the queue they may not always check pockets thoroughly, but they usually ask if you are carrying a phone. I took the ₹100 token and was able to complete my darshan very quickly.

Very old and famous temple in Kumbakonam

such Old Heritage and great valued temple is not maintained properly and not sure why most of the Gods are ignored except Lord Ganesha. Beautiful quiet temple with a very special and serene atmosphere. The white Ganesha is beautiful yett the main temple extends way beyond it. Off to the side behind the main shrine to Lord Shiva is an ancient Kali temple. The unique thing is that Kali is smiling sweetly. Sitting there for a few minutes, we felt blessed. The Kings of this region would come here for darshan before going into battle. The temple priest was very sweet and devotional. He showed us around. Since there was no crowd in this temple, we could enjoy the atmosphere. One of my favorite places in Kumbakonam.

There was a white colour lord Ganesha statue here, it was tiny sized, and it was very old temple with large area space, best to carry your things with yourself, the temple was located on the way to swamy malai, but map doesn't shows accurately, so you can easily reach there by entering in to swamymalai arch and drive for 300 mts you can reach temple.

Kumbakonam is basically a temple city. You can see many temples there and this Adi kumbheshwar Kovil is one of the most important temples in the city. When I went, they were doing some renovation work inside, so I couldn’t take in the full vibe of the place. But the highlight? The temple elephant! It’s right there, and people love getting blessings from it—it’s a sweet experience to hang out with that gentle giant. Coming in through the main entrance, you’ll notice a long corridor flanked by rows of quirky shops. They’re brimming with brass, bronze, copper kitchenware—great bargains if you're into traditional metal utensils. It really gives off the feel of old-school marketplace charm right before you step into the temple.

The famous Kumbakonam temple named after Aathi kumbedwara which idol is Lord Siva.. The temple have big gopurams and construction workds were happening inside..The gopuram and some internal pillars were under maintenance or construction of something as they wer covered and couldn't see properly.. They have an elephant for giving tribute and elephant will bless you with trunk.. Hope to see the full temple after maintenance soon..

Nice temple kept very clean. Went on a Sunday but was not crowded. Big temple. There's also one elephant just inside the temple giving blessings of money handled by the elephant keepers. Parking is around the temple on the road. Didn't find any place to keep footwear

I got goosebumps visiting the house of India's greatest mathematician Mr.Srinivasa Ramanujan. He lived here most of his life and his journey of Mathematics started and ended here. After his time his wife lived at this place. You would literally get excited by entering the room where he slept and worked and looked out of the window. When I have visited place was under renovation.

Got a opportunity to visit the mathematics genius " Srinivasa Ramanujan Monument". Entry is free and it is easy to find as it is in heart of town. Front room is full of his medals , certificates showing on wall, behind his statue.

A historic monument which has the potential to serve as a great inspiration for India's children, it is the very well-preserved home of the great mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. I really appreciate Sastra University for maintaining the place with such care. There are signs giving brief information about the different sections of the home, as well as several photographs as well as a bust of Mr. Ramanujan in the hall. A caretaker was present, who readily clarified any doubts one had about the place, and took photos of visitors cordially. I highly recommend this place if you're in Kumbakonam.

One of the Navagraha sthalams in TN. Surya Bhagavan is main deity here surrounded by other Gragha devas. We can also see Vishalakshi and Viswanathar here before going to Siva Suryanar sanctum. Now renovation works are undergoing so too dusty here. More wait time on Sundays as it is a auspicious day for Lord Surya. Must visit once in lifetime of every hindu devotees.

Currently when we visited this temple it was getting ready to do maha kumbh. So we couldn't get opportunity to visit the entire temple. But though this temple has some internal power. A must visit temple in Kumbakonam. It was told that the best day to visit this temple is on Sunday.

A small, homely temple with beautiful idols of Surya and Guru grahas. Recommended for those wishing to pacify the Sun in their horoscope. There isn’t much to see architecture-wise, and renovation work is currently in progress. You can buy lovely lotus garlands (₹100–150) from the flower shops near the temple gate to offer to the Sun God.

From what I read at the Adhi Kumbheswara Temple, this tank holds the Amrutha the Lord Brahma was worshipping to save the world from evil. Guess he didn’t succeed as we have turned this tank into a dhobi ghat and a place to dump garbage. There is no holiness ‘anymore’ about this.

Possibly one of the best juice shops in kumbakonam. Particular spot after getting a walk in Mahamaham tank. Prices were too affordable and it tastes exactly the same way whenever you try (i.e awesome). The shop is very small to sit and drink but definitely one of the best places to have milk shakes and fruit juices.

Arulmighu Jnanambigai Thenupureeswarar Thirukovil is located at Patteeswaram, near Kumbakonam, Tamilnadu. I am blessed , that i got chance to visit this temple. Since a astrologer suggested me to visit , i made it. Very old, historic and huge temple in outskirts of Kumbakonam town.Already few posted comments, history and experience in the temple. Mine is nothing special. People mainly come here to get rid of "Brahma Hatti Dosham". I am just sharing my experience. Since i knew the story , i entered into temple from East main and exited from North Main. While entering from east gopuram, Few elderly ladies approached me and asked me to buy food packets for annadaanam, each of 30.one lady is selling, remaining all are asking that packet. Forcibly i bought 3 packs and distributed. while distributing, even more ladies came into scene. Since i have less cash, i moved forward. One more lady approached me to buy Keerai ( food for cows) and bought. As i am moving into main gopuram, another elderly lady passing in front of me holding a plastic water container , loking at me and said in tamil, " Idi da venum, Nee inga varanuthuda venum" and moved on smiling at me.I am new to this place, not a tamilian, i questioned myself, who is that lady, why did she say to me ? Since, i find no answers , i entered into temple. its huge, historic, and u feel the divinity. I sat 25 min infront of Mahalingeswarar and chanted siva sahasranamavali.

It has 3 praharams and it might take 30 to 45 mins to come around the last praharam. Nowadays, the praharams are closed for public access. I had a wonderful visit to the Shri Agneeswarar Temple in Kanjanur, near Kumbakonam. The journey from Kumbakonam took about 30 minutes by bus, followed by a short 500-meter walk to the temple. Outside, we got an ‘archanai’ set for about 200 rupees, which included offerings like coconut, banana, and flowers. We also bought some white lotus flowers, which added to the experience. The temple itself was peaceful and we had a chance to sit down and enjoy the serene atmosphere. Around noon, they offered free lunch as annadhanam, which was such a generous gesture. Overall, it was a memorable and spiritually fulfilling visit!

Peaceful and Divine Experience at Thirumiyachur Lalithambigai Temple I had the blessing of visiting the Thirumiyachur Lalithambigai Temple recently, and it was a truly serene and fulfilling experience. I reached the temple around 8:45 AM and was greeted by a peaceful, calm atmosphere. The temple was not crowded at all, which made the experience even more spiritually enriching. I first offered my prayers to Sri sakalabhuvaneswarar Swamy, beginning with a flower offering and archanai performed by the priest. The rituals were done in a calm manner, setting a perfect tone for the rest of the visit. I then proceeded to offer my prayers to Sri Lalithambigai Ambal. I had brought a pattu sari, flower garlands, sumangali set and a pair of silver kolusu (anklets) for Ambal. The temple priest guided me to obtain a receipt (₹50) for the offerings, and I was also asked to produce the purchase receipt for the kolusu as part of the temple's protocol. The darshan of both Sri Meganatha Swamy and Sri Lalithambigai Ambal was deeply satisfying. The divine presence, combined with the quiet surroundings, made for a spiritually uplifting morning. I left the temple with a sense of contentment and gratitude. Highly recommend visiting during early hours if you're seeking a peaceful and divine experience without the crowds.

By the Grace of Maa Lalitha we got a golden opportunity to do Saran of Lalithambica in Ghee. Unexpectedly the day before we get to know that there is a ritual where we can see Lalithamba in Ghee. The particular ritual will happens yearly twice. Very luckily we get that opportunity. Actually they put a huge quantity of chakkarapingali (Ghee pored on top) After Lalithamba Darsan In Ghee they distribute the chakkarapingali as prasadam.

Awesome temple.. quiet interior.. a lot of beautiful sculptures. A very neat and clean temple. Accessibility is a toss as it is not easily reachable

What an amazing hidden gem. Being a resident of Mayiladuthurai, no idea how I had missed this temple so long. I felt it like a miniature of Thirukkadayur amirthakadeswarar temple. Lalithambigai was so mesmerizing and devotional omnipresent. The priests were nice and did their job well. The outer area was not maintained and couldn't walk around the temple which was a pity. Hope it's not the case next time. Overall a must visit.

The shlokas for bhagawan was taken ample time to recite unlike the quick recitals in many temples. That was a new experience. Ambience is great although crowded . Visited at the time of navaratri so kids performed classical dance on the stage ...very artistic. Overall an uplifting experience.

The temple is located in the interior rural area. You have to travel atleast 2kms to buy any needs. So, the flowers/ garlands and all other vasic needs sold in front of the temple are a bit pricey. If you are planning to visit this temple, buy the flowers and garlands from town and visit there. Inside the temple, you can pay 150rps and buy the archanai bag. It has a Arali garland and some other pooja things. The Iyer will instruct what have to be done. P.S. Dont mind the roadside flower sellers and don't have food in shops near the temple.

Actually I wesit 7 months back temple is good God is looking good felling but maintenance people looting money not work ur blessings marage I have going 5 pepeol 5 pepeol not fixed marage 6 months give time but not set.. Only money purposes pooja.... Only tamil language speaking outside pepeols not understanding that language....

I visited this temple today ( Thursday) , from Mayiladuthurai, there are so many buses to Kumbakonam, you can take ticket for kuthalam bus stand , it takes 20mins to reach kuthalam then , ( A5 govt bus no , essa local bus , kss local bus ) these three buses are going to Thirumanacheri for every 30-40mins from kuthalam bus stand . If you are too rich you can travel in auto or cabs etc , for 6kms they charge 200 - 500rs . If you are going for only marriage parihara pooja , kindly never buy anything from temple outside shop and waste money they will try to convince you. Once you enter the temple , left side there will be a ticket counter, after paying 200rs they will give a yellow bag containing coconut ,lemon , flower malaai , etc , then you have to sit in front of sivan parvati god inside temple , gurukal take all yellow bags and do some prayers and return back it to us with flower malaai , lemon and coconut in a yellow bag . Time I reached there - 1.00pm . Upto 1.30pm they do parihara pooja , and after 4pm they start again
