Beach
Outdoor Activities
Marina Beach, a vibrant urban oasis located just 4 kilometers from Chennai Central Railway Station, is renowned for being the second longest beach in the world, stretching an impressive 13 kilometers. This bustling shoreline is a must-visit destination in Chennai, attracting tourists and locals alike with its lively atmosphere. As you stroll along the sandy expanse, you'll encounter kite sellers and cricket enthusiasts mingling with families enjoying quality time together.
Beautiful place , Location, View Point, It is so Amazing we had enjoyed a lot. With being longest coastal areas. We have walked a very long distance in the coastal lines to enjoy the view from different parts.
Binoy M — Google review
Marina Beach is the perfect spot for both family outings and moments of peaceful relaxation. Early mornings here are calming, with beautiful sunrises and cool breezes making it ideal for a peaceful walk or some quiet time. In the evenings, the beach becomes lively and is great for families, children have ample space to play, there are fun rides, and the festive atmosphere is wonderful. Transport to Marina Beach is very convenient, with easy access by metro, local trains, buses, autos, and cabs. The location is close to many parts of the city so reaching the beach is hassle-free. One of the highlights is the variety of delicious local snacks and food stalls. From crispy bajjis, sundal, and murukku to ice creams and fresh fruit, there is something for everyone. Many nearby restaurants and cafés offer both South Indian and multi-cuisine options, so it’s easy to find good food with a sea view. Marina Beach is well-maintained, and recent improvements have included better accessibility for everyone. Whether you want to soak in the sound of the waves, enjoy street food, or spend quality time with loved ones, Marina Beach never disappoints! Highly recommended for all ages.
ABHISHEK K — Google review
Marina Beach ranks first among the worst beaches in India. At least it is a beach that is not only difficult to get to, but also to see. There are people on the road, traffic in the evening, women are not there to change their clothes, to go to the beach you have to walk 1km on the sand. It is best for those who go on a tour to Chennai to avoid seeing a 100% clean beach. If you want to see it, it is better to look somewhere a little further away between Marina Beach and the Lighthouse
Ramesh B — Google review
A clean and serene beach of Chennai. It has a long coast line. I visited in day time in afternoon heat so couldn't enjoy the evening chowpatty food options and fun. The beach cleaning is actively going on.
Sarthak V — Google review
If there’s one place in Chennai that truly captures the soul of the city, it’s Marina Beach. 🌊✨ Stretching for more than 13 kilometers, Marina is one of the longest urban beaches in the world, and it’s not just about the waves — it’s about the stories they whisper. Established during the British era in the 1880s, this beach has witnessed decades of history, from colonial promenades to freedom rallies, and now stands as a symbol of Chennai’s pride and culture. I reached here just before sunrise, and honestly, I wasn’t prepared for what I saw — the sky slowly turning golden, waves softly kissing the shore, and the sound of the sea blending with temple bells and morning prayers from a distance. It felt like time had paused. Marina isn’t just a beach — it’s a living piece of history and emotion. Built during the British colonial era in the 1880s, it has seen everything — from royal processions to freedom movements. Walking here feels like walking through time, but with the heartbeat of modern Chennai all around you. By evening, it transforms completely — families laughing, kids flying kites, vendors selling roasted corn and spicy sundal, the air thick with the smell of street food and sea breeze. There’s a rhythm to it — chaotic, colorful, and absolutely unforgettable. I loved visiting the MGR and Anna memorials, and the Triumph of Labour statue, standing tall and proud like the city itself. Don’t miss a stroll toward the Lighthouse, especially when it’s lit up at night — the view is breathtaking! Whether you’re a wanderer, a history lover, or just someone who wants to feel alive by the sea — Marina Beach will stay with you long after you’ve left. 💙 Pro Tip: Go at sunrise for peace, at sunset for magic, and stay long enough to let the waves write your story.
Rangy W — Google review
If you’re in Chennai near Chepauk Stadium, you must visit Marina Beach — it’s a beautiful place with clean and refreshing water. 🌊✨.
ATUL R — Google review
The beach is really mesmerizing and the cool breeze which is coming from sea side is literally make anyone'd mind fresh !! But the beach is too crowdy although that is to be expected for one of the longest beaches in Asia !
Sid — Google review
The beach at night is absolutely stunning! The gentle sound of waves combined with the shimmering moonlight creates a serene and romantic atmosphere. It’s perfect for a peaceful walk or just sitting back and enjoying the view. The cool breeze and the reflection of lights on the water make it an unforgettable experience. On Saturdays and Sundays, there’s a lively mela that adds a festive vibe, but do keep in mind that during these days, finding parking for a four-wheeler can be quite challenging. Highly recommended for anyone who loves calm and scenic nights by the sea.

Museum
Specialty Museums
Fort St. George Museum, established in 1644, is the first British fortress in India and a significant historical site in Chennai. The museum boasts over 3000 antique artifacts from different periods of modern history and is divided into three floors with ten galleries. Visitors can explore indigenous weapons, a diverse collection of armors, shells fired during World Wars I & II, British Army uniforms, and porcelain articles used during the East India Company era.
It was a really interesting experience walking through both Indian and British colonial history. The museum is actually inside an old British fort, which adds to the whole vibe. We were especially amazed by all the stuff they had on display—things like old weapons, coins, uniforms, documents, and even furniture from the British times. Security check up would be there. One can book tickets at the entrance of the museum through QR code.(20 ruppes per adult). Just a reminder. It's a bit hot indoors. Also it's only open till 5 pm.
Allan J — Google review
Fort St George Museum – A Gateway to Colonial Chennai. A fascinating journey into Chennai’s colonial past—rich in artefacts, art, and historical significance. Filled with galleries showcasing weaponry, coins, uniforms, paintings, documents, and even the first Indian flag hoisted after Independence, the Fort Museum brings history to life through thoughtfully curated exhibits. The museum is housed in a charming 18th-century structure that once served as the Madras Bank and the Exchange Hall. Upon entering, you’re greeted by a striking marble statue of Lord Cornwallis—an iconic landmark and conversation starter. Ground floor features armaments and porcelain; an upper floor displays portraits, medals, and coins; and the top floor houses the Indian national flag hoisted after Independence. Well-preserved galleries, especially the detailed craftsmanship on artifacts and colonial ephemera. The museum can feel quite warm, especially on hot days. Fans are few and spaced out. Entry ticket can be booked through online link, via QR codes only, at the entrance. Since the museum lies within a government compound, anticipate police screening. Carry a valid ID. Open from 9 AM to 5 PM. Entry Fee: Rs.20 per head. Bring water, there are limited facilities inside. St Mary’s Church (“Westminster Abbey of the East”) is worth exploring too. Nice place to spend 1 to 2 hours with family. Children might enjoy the artifact's. Free Car parking available across the main road.
Cyru D — Google review
Museum inside St. George Fort, Chennai containing all the British era historical artifacts that were preserved. A nominal Rs.20 digital ticket needs to be booked which goes to the government. It's worth of you're a history nerd & want to see the artifacts with your own eyes instead of just reading about it in the books. The data there will satisfy your historical curiosity and increase your knowledge for sure.
Debasmita M — Google review
This was probably one of the best and most memorable museums I've ever visited. This is definitely an unforgettable experience for my trip to Chennai. Looking at the paintings (that I saw on YouTube) in real life is just mesmerising. I couldn't bring myself to move away from the painting exhibit. The firearms, coins and plates, etc., were also fascinating. But, the paintings were the main highlight. If you're in Chennai, DO NOT MISS THIS.
Hasini — Google review
We came by train to the Fort St George stop but you can't enter from there so have to go all the way round to tbe opposite side. The foreigner fee to enter is Rp250 but you can't pay cash, so you have to scan the QR code and pay by credit card, which might not be easy. After your inside.... you can wonder round and we exited by the Fort St George station The church was all locked up on Sunday unfortunately. The museum was very good, with mortar cannons, old medals, uniforms, a whole room of massive portraits of British kings / Queens and local dignitaries (British and indian) rifles, coins over the ages and other stuff. Well laid out and not crowded
Simon R — Google review
The seat of Madras Presidency! While most of the British era building are now govt offices.. this one is a museum! Gives a peek into the happenings of Madras presidency & it's aftermath. It houses busts of Viceroys and Guv-Generals, coins of that era, cannons, portraits and paintings of places around Chennai. Never miss the display of the "Oldest preserved National Flag" which was hoisted in 1932. It's amazing! Carry an ID card for security clearance and the place to close to Broadway bus station and well connected by public transport.
Pranav M — Google review
You can clearly understand the history of how Chennai was ruled by the British. However, please note the following: since the site is connected to military facilities, the entrance is on the seaside. You will be asked to show your passport, and security is strict. Tickets are available only through online payment and cost 250 rupees.
新家基靖 — Google review
The place clean and quiet. It has the first hosted flag and old British items. The ticket should be taken by us using the QR code given by them. They have a heavy security so try not to bring unwanted things

Observatories & Planetariums
B.M. Birla Planetarium is a modern facility located within the Periyar Science and Technology Centre campus at Kotturpuram. It offers visitors a virtual tour of the night sky and hosts astronomy shows on its specially perforated hemispherical aluminum inner dome. The planetarium features 360-degree theater for an immersive experience. Additionally, it has 8 galleries with over 500 exhibits showcasing various aspects of science and technology.
Maintaintained very well. ₹30 for parking car. Entry fee, package is best. For adult ₹100 per person, ₹50 per kid, kids will love 3D show and planetarium show. Sphere show is nice, My kids enjoyed mirror house, and maths wing. Calculate your weight on another plant is also good. It's raining today. But it won't affect any show. When I visit here play areas are sourrounded by water. So can't able to enjoy slides and swings. We missed it. Totally my kids enjoyed here. Worth visiting.
Selvam M — Google review
It was awesome visiting this place with the kids! Totally recommend it. Grab the combo ticket and check out the three amazing shows. Adult tickets are ₹60 and kids' tickets are ₹30 for the planetarium, science center, and 3D show package. "Science on Sphere" is ₹20 for adults and ₹10 for kids. The Planetarium can show all kinds of celestial movements. They use special projectors to make the astronomical stuff look incredible on the dome. Popular exhibits include the Solar System, stars, seasons, comets, and the moon landing. There's also a cool DRDO pavilion. The "Dawn of the Space Age" show is a mind-blowing Mirrordome+ experience – super realistic space travel visuals.
Dileep K — Google review
Children's park is free of charges. For planetarium charges above 12 years of Rs. 80 and below 12 years Rs.40. Car parking Rs. 20. 3D show is amusing and the planetarium gives good knowledge about the universe too the children. Nearly maintained. Children can spend hours here.

Excellent place to visit in the heart of the city specially along with kids. Very informative. 3d show, spherical show, evolution garden were great. Price is very decent.
Rupchand J — Google review
Birla Planetarium is located right in the heart of the city. It’s a quiet place with plenty of parking available in front. The ticket prices are very reasonable – **INR 100 for adults and INR 50 for children** covers the entire package (Planetarium show, entry, 3D show, and Sphere show). There’s also an option to buy a **basic INR 35 ticket** for only the Planetarium show. The campus is not very large, so walking inside is easy. At the entrance, you’re greeted by an **old fighter jet (HAL HF-24 Marut)**, an **old steam locomotive**, and a **model of the GSLV rocket**. There’s also an **evolution park (Dinosaur World)**, but unfortunately, like the science and industrial play areas for kids, it isn’t well maintained. The **real highlight is inside** – the Planetarium and the Science Exhibition Centre. Clean washrooms are available outside, and there are gift, souvenir, and toy shops inside. Food options are limited to a small snack counter selling tea, coffee, and light snacks, so it’s best to carry your own lunch if you plan to spend the full 5–6 hours here. Do note that food and water bottles are not allowed inside the Planetarium show, but they can be deposited at the front desk. **Science & Exhibition Centre:** * **Ground Floor:** * DRDO Gallery (models of tanks, battle equipment, and Tejas aircraft) * Hall of Nuclear Power (detailed displays on nuclear power generation) * 3D Show (10-minute dinosaur world movie with 3D glasses – very exciting for kids) * **First Floor:** * Oceans Gallery * Mirror House (fun for kids with mirror illusions) * Indian Space Gallery (models, information on ISRO projects, and a live quiz show) * Ramanujan Mathematics Gallery (interactive experiments) * Heart Museum (hearts of different animals preserved in jars) * Science on a Sphere (visual science show on a spherical display) **Planetarium Show:** The absolute **star attraction** – a 20-minute immersive journey through space, stars, the Sun, Moon, and other planets. Truly fascinating, especially for children. ✨ **Overall:** Birla Planetarium is highly educational and an excellent place for kids interested in science, space, and technology. While the outdoor exhibits and some galleries could use better maintenance, the Planetarium and Science Centre make the visit absolutely worthwhile.

Zoo
Outdoor Activities
Arignar Anna Zoological Park, located in Vandalur just 32 kilometers from Chennai, is a sprawling haven for wildlife enthusiasts and families alike. Covering an impressive 1260 acres, it stands as the largest zoo of its kind in Southeast Asia. This remarkable park features expansive natural enclosures that allow visitors to observe a diverse array of flora and fauna up close. With around 138 species on display, including both endemic and exotic animals, it's truly a paradise for nature lovers.
I recently visited the zoo, and it was a wonderful experience. The place is well-maintained with clean surroundings and clearly marked pathways, making it easy to navigate. The variety of animals is impressive — from majestic lions and playful monkeys to colorful birds and reptiles. Each enclosure is spacious and designed to resemble the animals’ natural habitat, which shows the effort put into their care and comfort. The staff were friendly and informative, always ready to answer questions. Educational boards near each enclosure provided useful details about the species, which made the visit not only fun but also very informative. Facilities like restrooms, food stalls, and seating areas were clean and accessible. It’s a great spot for families, especially children, as it’s both entertaining and educational. Overall, the zoo offers a perfect balance of conservation, education, and recreation. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys spending time with nature and wildlife.

Arignar Anna Zoological Park (Vandalur Zoo) - a day well spent! I visited this sprawling zoo with my family, and we had a roaring time (pun intended). The highlight was definitely the Bengal tiger- those piercing eyes and majestic stripes left us in awe. We also spotted a rare white tiger, which was a treat. The lion enclosure was impressive, with the kings of the savannah lazing in the sun. The Indian bears were adorable, playing around. The giraffes were another favorite, with their long necks and gentle eyes. We enjoyed watching them roam. The peacocks were a sight to behold, spreading their vibrant feathers in a stunning display. The cassowari, with their unique casques, were an interesting sight. The zoo is spread over a vast area, with plenty of greenery and naturalistic enclosures. It's a great place to spend a day with family and learn about wildlife conservation. Overall, a fun and educational experience! 4.5/5 stars. Highly recommended for families and wildlife enthusiasts!

Visited Arignar Anna Zoological Park (Vandalur Zoo) recently and it was an amazing experience! The zoo is huge, very well maintained, and has a great variety of animals. We really enjoyed the lion safari and deer safari totally worth it! 🦁 🦌 Yes, the ticket prices felt a bit on the higher side, but considering the size and upkeep of the zoo, it's completely justified. A perfect place to spend a day with family or friends. Full paisa wasool experience! 👍🏻 ✨✨
BIKASH — Google review
The Vandalur zoo is a very vast area. The number of animals, when we went with family during a weekday, were less. I understand that this is a very old zoo but it is not properly maintained. There are not many indications about which way we have to go (if you are planning to take the cycles or go by walk). The is a tour available in buggy but they just drive through. Many animals shelters are poorly maintained. There is only one restaurant which provides food during lunch. The quality is questionable, but no other choice. Own food also is not allowed inside. Get plenty of water if you are walking in the zoo. There are kiosks were water bottles are available but we need to return them intact (not to crushed, no stickers to be removed, etc) if we need to get the deposit amount for the water bottles. Again hygiene of these water bottles is questionable. One good use of technology is in buying tickets. Instead of waiting in queues to buy tickets, we can scan QR code to get the tickets in WhatsApp.

A great zoo to visit!!! Entry ticket: 200/person Electric vehicle fees: 150/person Deer and Lion safari: 150/person A great zoo with lots of animals. Each animal has ample space for roaming around owing to large enclosures. There are toilets and drinking water at regular intervals of time. The no plastic policy is also highly recommendable, especially since there are free animals like deer roaming around the park. Modes of travel inside the park: 1. Walking (will take around 4 hours to walk around the whole park) 2. Cycles 3. E-bike 4. E-carts (park is divided into zones. The cart will take you from entrance to first zone and the let you off. You can roam around till whenever you need and the go to the pickup point. The e-carts will pick you from this pickup point and transfer you to the next point and so on. Also note that this mode of travel will not cover all animals, especially those that are between zones during transit). There are also small shops selling cold as well as hot drinks and snacks. I recommend going to the safari after visiting the zoo because the safari bus is air conditioned and helps you cool off a bit before leaving the park. However, the safari was not as good. There were three lions near an enclosure and some deer.

Visited Vandalur Zoo recently and had a great overall experience — the place is well-maintained, clean, and perfect for a family outing. However, a few things can be improved. Electric cycles are very limited, especially on weekends — late comers won’t get any, which is disappointing. Also, there is no online booking option for cycles, battery cars, or safari tickets, which causes unnecessary waiting. The safari experience itself can be better with more animals added to make it feel fuller and more exciting.

Nestled within the sprawling 16-acre Pantheon Complex, the Government Museum Chennai is a treasure trove of art and history that dates back to its establishment in 1851. This museum features an eclectic mix of collections, including Indian art and sculpture, bronzes from the illustrious Chola Dynasty, and fascinating anthropological artifacts. Visitors can explore various buildings like the Museum Theatre with its stunning Italianate architecture and the Indo-Saracenic National Gallery of Art facade.
One of the second largest Museum in India , probably one of the oldest in the world. Huge collections of ancient civilizations but unfortunately some of them aren't maintained well is sad to know. I see only few are really making use of such a great place where it talks about Hindustan and we should really encourage them from my point of view Request Govt to promote such places wherever they can to attract the visitors Closed on Fridays but remain open on all other days They charge 50rs for adults and 250₹ for foreigners and additional 250₹ for camera or video which is expensive but ok

Egmore Museum is incredibly valuable for anyone interested in South Indian art, especially temple sculpture and bronzes. The depth of history, the level of craftsmanship (for example in Chola bronzes) is breathtaking. It gives a strong sense of continuity of art through centuries — Pallava to Chola to later periods. The museum doesn’t always match the potential of its collection in terms of how the works are presented, interpreted, and preserved. If these areas are improved — lighting, protective display, better signage, more artefacts visible — it could be world-class.

2nd oldest museum in India & many sections make it feel so. The ticket costs ₹50 and the entry comprises of 6 sections across several buildings. The corridors are huge and very high ceilings make it more majestic. The exhibits are comprehensive with pre historic - colonial. The must see are the Raja Ravi Varma paintings. The Indus Valley Civilization section. Half day to a full day leisure will be the time needed to cover the entire museum. Some buildings are poorly maintained with no lights and ventilation. Otherwise, this museum is extremely enriching & unique.
Dr. B — Google review
The Government Museum is one of the best places to visit in Chennai. The museum encompasses six buildings and over 40 galleries, featuring exhibits on anthropology, archaeology, ancient South Indian bronze sculptures, Raja Ravi Varma paintings, numismatics, botany, and zoology. Highlights include: 1. Bronze statues, sculptures, and idols from ancient times. 2. Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings and other artworks of freedom fighters. 3. Artifacts from the British era and Indus Valley Civilization. 4. Weapons, armories, and folk traditions displayed in detail. 5. Exhibits that cover the rich culture of India across states and even some from other countries. The museum is not only informative but also aesthetically pleasing. The old buildings themselves add to the charm, and you can take plenty of beautiful photos and videos. The museum’s colonial architecture itself made a strong impression, setting the stage for what felt like a journey through history and culture. Among the many sections, the painting gallery showcasing Raja Ravi Varma’s works was the absolute highlight. Seeing his masterpieces in person was breathtaking—the detail, colors, and lifelike expressions were captivating. Standing before those paintings felt like stepping into a dialogue between tradition and modernity, with each artwork radiating timeless beauty. Another notable stop was the library. Although most of it was under renovation, one section was open to the public. It housed both Tamil and non-Tamil literature. The sight of carefully preserved texts revealed the institution’s role as a guardian of knowledge. I found this combination of regional richness and global outlook quite impressive. The museum also had small but useful facilities like a café and comfortable seating spaces where visitors could relax and have food. This thoughtful arrangement made the experience more pleasant, especially after walking through vast collections. It’s also a great place to bring children — they’ll learn a lot about history, heritage, and art in an engaging way. Parking is good, the museum is easy to reach on the main road, and sometimes they host melas/fairs with food stalls, which adds to the experience. Overall, it’s a must-visit in Chennai if you want to explore India’s culture, art, and history in depth. We visited the museum on Sunday. The admission fee was ₹50 for adults and ₹25 for children. For international visitors, the charge was ₹250.

A Heritage Giant That Needs Modern Revival Having visited several state-level museums across India, I would say the museum here feels stuck in the 20th century. The collections are vast and historically important, but the presentation and visitor experience clearly need modernization. Still, if you have 4+ hours, this place is worth exploring for its depth, diversity, and heritage. 1. Navigation is difficult A proper guide map is badly needed. Buildings 1–7 are spread across the campus, and even though you frequently see “You are here” signs, it’s unclear where this position lies in relation to the entire complex. First-time visitors often end up walking in circles. 2. Must-visit buildings The Bronze Gallery and Anthropology Blocks are the highlights. These sections display some of the best curated items and deserve to be explored first. 3. Mixed maintenance across galleries The Art Gallery and Archaeology sections feel poorly maintained. Lighting, labeling, and cleanliness vary widely, so visit them based on your time and interest. 4. Children’s Museum is outdated The Children’s Gallery looks overly simplistic. The Tamil Nadu cultural setup is good in concept but uses mannequins with strangely European facial features. The European cultural theme made using cheap ₹100 dolls ends up looking more scary than educational. 5. Numismatics building is disappointing For a state with such deep history, the Numismatics section is shockingly minimal—only a few Chola coins? Most “coins” and “currencies” are just printed vinyl displays, which you could easily find online. However, the Philately section upstairs is relatively better. 6. Pleasant evenings In the evenings, the complex hosts various art, music, and dance events, creating a relaxed cultural atmosphere. Couldn't find the Souvenir shop, the small one near the ticket building sells wooden and bronze collections.
Praveen V — Google review
My visit to the Government Museum in Egmore, Chennai, was a journey through time, housed within stunning Indo-Saracenic architecture. The complex, a peaceful green space in the city, immediately impressed me with its heritage ambiance. The absolute highlight was the Bronze Gallery, where the sheer artistry of the Chola bronzes—especially the cosmic dancer, Nataraja—was mesmerizing. I spent a long time in the Archaeology section, viewing the ancient Amaravati Buddhist sculptures and the prehistoric artifacts from Adichanallur. It was fascinating to discover that the museum holds the largest collection of Roman antiquities outside of Europe, a truly unique aspect. While the vastness of the collection means some older galleries could use updating, the experience was incredibly enriching, offering a deep and tangible connection to the history and cultural legacy of South India.

The place is full of history, culture, and art from ancient sculptures and artifacts to natural history exhibits. The architecture itself is beautiful and adds to the charm. A must-visit for anyone interested in learning about India’s rich heritage.

The Thousand Lights Shia Mosque, located in Royapettah, Chennai, is a significant historical site dating back to the early 1800s. It was built by the Wallajah family of the Carnatic rulers and features traditional Islamic architecture with five domes and two minarets. The mosque includes a spacious prayer hall for men and a separate area for women.
Very calm and soothing experience. It was very peaceful inside. The Shia mosque has historical significance. There is a library and cemetery in the mosque premises. There is no entry fee.
Steuben D — Google review
The Thousand Lights Shia Mosque, situated on Peter's Road in Royapettah, Chennai, stands as one of the city’s most iconic and historic religious landmarks. Its origins trace back to the early 19th century when Nawab Umdat-ul-Umrah of the Wallajah dynasty commissioned its construction on land previously used by Shia Muslims as a gathering place, especially during the month of Muharram. The mosque derives its evocative name from the tradition of illuminating its vast prayer hall with a thousand oil lamps, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that has become part of local legend. Architecturally, the mosque is a striking example of Indo-Islamic design, featuring multiple domes and tall minarets that rise prominently above the bustling Anna Salai area. The main prayer hall is spacious and adorned with Quranic inscriptions, while separate areas are designated for men and women. The mosque complex also includes a Dargah dedicated to Imam Hussain (Raziyallahu Anhu), the revered grandson of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, further enhancing its spiritual significance for the Shia community. The Thousand Lights Mosque is not only a vibrant center for daily worship but also a focal point during Muharram, when thousands gather to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. The atmosphere during these observances is solemn, with the mosque beautifully lit and filled with the sounds of prayer and reflection. Visitors are welcomed, provided they dress modestly and observe the decorum expected in a place of worship. The mosque’s central location makes it easily accessible, and it remains open from early morning until late evening, inviting both devotees and those interested in its history and architecture to experience its unique ambiance. Beyond its religious functions, the mosque is a symbol of Chennai’s pluralistic heritage and serves as a reminder of the city’s deep-rooted connections to diverse faiths and traditions. Its enduring presence, historical roots, and architectural grandeur make it a must-visit for anyone seeking to understand the cultural and spiritual fabric of Chennai.

A peaceful and beautifully maintained mosque. Thousand Lights Shia Mosque is truly a serene place right in the heart of Chennai. The architecture is stunning, and the atmosphere inside is incredibly calm. The mosque is clean, well kept, and very welcoming. Shia Muslims offer their daily namaz here, and there is also an Ashurkhana inside, which adds to its cultural and religious significance. The space feels spiritually uplifting and deeply rooted in tradition. A must visit for anyone interested in history, spirituality, or simply looking for a quiet, beautiful space in the city. Highly recommended.

Another blessed place to visit. It was so peaceful and calm. The site is well maintained and clean. They have displayed the instructions to follow. Was decorated with lights all over the place and there is a historical significance for it running back to the times of the British.
Isuranga F — Google review
A 200 year old mosque in the City. Though the name is Thousand lights mosque, it was a custom in the British era to lighten the mosque with oil lamps when electricity was not available. Possibly only one lamp can be seen now ( not quite sure) which might be used in that period. Cast iron columns and connecting design (that also of cast-iron) tie with huge bolts and nuts can make a visitor feel the actual weight of each part of interior. Domes are also in good shape and attractive. No fees. Better to take permission from the caretaker before going in.

For those with an interest in wildlife and conservation, the Madras Crocodile Bank is a worthwhile and educational destination. It offers a unique opportunity to see a wide array of reptile species, learn about important conservation efforts, and enjoy engaging activities like the night safari. While not a full-day commitment, it is an excellent stop for families traveling along the ECR, especially when combined with other nearby attractions like Mahabalipuram. Highlights and attractions Vast reptile collection: The park houses a large collection of reptiles, including over 15 species of crocodiles and alligators from around the world. You can see endangered species like the saltwater crocodile and gharial. Other species: Beyond the crocodilians, the park features a variety of snakes, turtles, tortoises, and lizards. Virtual Reality (VR) shows: On weekends and holidays, you can experience VR movies that transport you to the natural habitats of reptiles around the world. Ideal for children: The Croc Bank is particularly popular with families and school groups, as kids enjoy seeing the reptiles up close in a safe environment. Worth the visit 👍🏼 kids had a great time. An impressive variety and number of crocodiles, and the snake show was also good. The guys milking the snakes are polite and patient and when they see interest in the audience they start explaining everything about the snakes with enthusiasm. Kids will be fascinated. The cleanliness was good, can be better. There was no foul smell anywhere when we went , it’s a nice place for few hours outing with kids.

Madras War Cemetery, established by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, is a solemn site dedicated to honoring the fallen soldiers of East and South India from World War II. Similar to other Commonwealth cemeteries like Singapore's Kranji Cemetery, it provides a peaceful sanctuary despite its location alongside a bustling road. The well-maintained grounds and the Madras 1914-1918 War Memorial at the back stand as poignant reminders of sacrifice and valor.
Beautiful place with good , calm atmosphere... The grass are nicely trimmed have a nice appearance. Neat and tidy place without any single trash. Its a cemetery of the warriors who fought death in world war 1st . Its a good place for taking photographs and for spending time for our relaxation. Its having a beautiful view with lots of flowers and green arch... Its having no entrance fees.

The Madras War Cemetery is a solemn place dedicated to soldiers who lost their lives during the Second World War. It holds numerous graves that remind us of the sacrifices made in a war beyond anyone’s control. One drawback is that visitors are often not allowed inside, as it is managed directly by a private organization from England. Many times you may only be able to view it from the outside. It’s well-maintained and peaceful, but the limited access can feel a little disappointing. Overall, it’s worth a short visit if you’re passing by — you can take a quick look, click a photo, and pay your respects. Not a place that takes much time, but meaningful in its own way.

Beautifully maintained ground. The grass well trimmed, hardly any weeds, beautiful flowers. Not a single piece of trash can be seen on the grounds. With Chennai dry and hardly any grass, this is a total contrast. It is not a huge area though. You probably can cover the whole area within 1/2 hour or so. If you are travelling a long distance just to visit this site, you may be disappointed.

Nestled in the vibrant Mylapore neighborhood of Chennai, Santhome Cathedral Basilica stands as a magnificent testament to history and faith. Originally constructed by Portuguese explorers in the 16th century, this stunning church was built over the tomb of St. Thomas, one of Jesus Christ's original apostles who is credited with bringing Christianity to India.
I visited Santhome Cathedral Basilica for the first time, and it was an amazing experience. The church is absolutely beautiful, both inside and out. The architecture is stunning and filled with history and grace. The peaceful atmosphere inside the church gave me a deep sense of calm and reflection. It’s truly a holy and serene place to spend some quiet time. A must-visit in Chennai for anyone who appreciates historic churches, spiritual spaces, or simply beautiful places. The views were marvelous both inside and outside. You can just go alone by yourself, sit in the silence and pray, you'll find your inner peace for sure. Only three churches {St. Peter's Basilica in Rome (over St. Peter's tomb), the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Spain (over St. James's tomb), and the San Thome Church in Chennai, India (over St. Thomas's tomb)}in the world are built over the tomb of an apostle of jesus Christ. With its white texture and spires, the Santhome Church stands majestically tall and makes you pause and appreciate its beauty. Built in neo-Gothic style, the church delights every visitor with its naturally lit interiors, rows of wooden pews and striking windows with coloured panes.

"A Must-Visit Landmark in Chennai!" Santhome Cathedral Basilica is a beautiful and historically rich place that absolutely deserves a visit. The neo-Gothic architecture with its stunning white spires and serene stained-glass windows is breathtaking. What makes it truly special is its history—it's built over the tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle. You can visit the peaceful underground crypt and the fascinating museum which houses artifacts like the spearhead believed to have killed the saint. The whole atmosphere is incredibly calm and spiritual. It’s perfect for history buffs, architecture lovers, or anyone looking for a peaceful escape from the city. Highly recommended!❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

I’ve always loved exploring places of worship for their history and architecture — and Santhome Cathedral Basilica in Chennai truly impressed me. The moment I saw it, I was struck by its beautiful white Gothic structure rising gracefully against the sky. The pointed spires, arched doorways, and tall windows give it such a majestic look, and the detailing is absolutely stunning. Inside, the atmosphere is calm and peaceful. The stained glass windows bring in soft, colorful light that fills the space with a quiet serenity. Even as someone from a different faith, I could feel a deep sense of spirituality and respect in the place. Architecturally, it’s a masterpiece — the symmetry, the high ceilings, and the intricate craftsmanship reflect classic European design, yet it blends so harmoniously with the coastal surroundings of Chennai. Learning that the church was built over the tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle, one of Jesus’s disciples, made the visit even more meaningful from a historical point of view. Overall, Santhome Cathedral Basilica is more than just a religious site — it’s a blend of art, history, and peace. You don’t have to be Christian to appreciate its beauty; it’s a place that speaks to anyone who values culture and architecture.

Quite surprised to know that there is a Cathedral church in Chennai. It is quite a big Cathedral. The architecture and design is almost the same as other Cathedral around the world. With the white colour, it is quite eye catching when you pass by it. it is not just the church but the compound is also quite big. there is another building and parking lot. Visited on Saturday morning, there are few people in the church, mostly are visitors.

After many disappointing fake reviews on various places in Chennai, this is only one worth of my praise. We went to beach for sunset but couldn’t stand the place so started walking back to this church. God is good, we did not expect the lightings on this church but it was so beautiful. There was service going on in the sanctuary, although we didn’t understand the song, but the music was so calming. The night temperature was pleasant too, praise the Lord!

A calm, soulful hilltop shrine with sweeping views of Chennai and the airport. The church is small, serene and well kept; you can sit quietly, light a candle and spend time in prayer. The steps up (with Stations of the Cross) feel devotional, or you can drive to the top if you’re with elders. Inside, the ancient stone cross and the statue of Our Lady of Expectation add to the sense of history. Crowd management is disciplined on Sundays and feast days.

One of the most popular library and also historic spot in Chennai. Campus filled with lush greenery... Collections are vast and diverse... A perfect place for researchers, students and competitive exam preparing students. You can also find shops inside the heritage campus.. A small exhibition market is also here... Note: As of today dated " 23rd Sep 2025 ", Front side and the main building is undergoing renovation. So visitors needs to go backside of the library to enter.

This Connemara public library is inside the Museum. In Pantheon Road Very neatly maintained. Ground floor air-conditioned. Books are very neatly numbered and maintained. The timing is 8 to 6 minimum. Good parking is available. Nearby one Aavin parlour is available. One more small restaurant is available for snacks. Opposite lots of restaurants. Bur Museum is not maintained properly in some places.

A massive library with wide range of books across various topics. However at some places it feels like not maintained properly, especially the areas that has the old books. I am very worried, over time we will lose those precious books. Librarians are very helpful and I guess it is a good place for students who study for competitive exams as I could see lots of them studying individually and in groups.

Outdoor Activities
Edward Elliot's Beach, also known as Besant Nagar Beach or Bessie, is a popular destination in Chennai. Named after British explorer Edward Elliot, this beach is renowned for its clean shoreline and tranquil atmosphere. Surrounded by lush tree growth and offering a peaceful environment with fewer crowds, it provides a serene escape for tourists seeking natural beauty and quietude. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls along the sandy shore while feeling the cool water and warm sand beneath their feet.
If Marina Beach is the heart of Chennai, then Besant Nagar Beach (Elliot’s Beach) is its peaceful soul. 🌊💙 The first time I came here, it felt different — quieter, cleaner, and calmer than most city beaches. The gentle sound of the waves, the cool breeze, and the friendly energy of the place make it perfect for those who love to unwind away from the crowds. At sunrise, the whole beach glows golden — joggers, yoga groups, and early risers all share the same peaceful vibe. By evening, it turns lively but never chaotic — you’ll find street food stalls, local musicians, and couples watching the sunset in silence. It’s the kind of place where you can just sit, think, and let the sea speak. 🌅 Don’t miss the Karl Schmidt Memorial, standing right on the sands — built in memory of a European sailor who lost his life saving another. It’s a small but powerful reminder of human kindness and Chennai’s deep connection to the sea. The nearby cafés and restaurants add a modern twist — from filter coffee to continental breakfast, everything feels cozy and welcoming. Pro Tip: Visit around 5:30 AM for a peaceful sunrise, or after 7 PM for the perfect mix of breeze, lights, and good vibes. Besant Nagar Beach is where Chennai slows down — where you can find both calm and connection in the rhythm of the waves. 🌴✨

Great beach near Besant nagar. Very peaceful. If you're taking a car only early mornings are recommended. Evenings are livelier, with lots of activities, food and entertainment. But you can't park your car if you go later than 4.30pm. Bike or public transport is recommended in the Evenings. There are a lot of eateries around.

Visited this Elliot beach near Besant Nagar in the evening. Since the place was too crowded and cleanliness was poorly managed, I felt bad as the beach cleanliness should be citizens responsibility. Near shore it's always beautiful.nearby restaurants are available and you can reach here by auto, taxi or self. Parking availability seems tough.

Edward Elliot’s Beach, or simply Elliot’s Beach, is one of the most popular and vibrant spots in Chennai. It’s a great place to relax by the shore, enjoy the sea breeze, and take a peaceful walk in the evenings. The beach is clean and well-maintained compared to many others, and the nearby food stalls add a lively touch with plenty of tasty local snacks and coffee options. Great place to see sunrise and sunset. That said, it does get very crowded on weekends, especially during the evenings, which can make it a bit noisy and hectic. If you’re looking for a quiet, serene experience, visiting on a weekday might be better. Overall, Elliot’s Beach offers a refreshing coastal escape right in the city - perfect for a casual outing, a quick bite, or simply soaking in the ocean view.

Visited Edward Elliot's Beach in the morning — it's very close to the IIT Madras campus 🏫🌊. The place was less crowded and offered a soul-soothing experience 🌅. The soft light of sunrise looked truly beautiful ✨, and the fresh, crisp air carried a mild scent of the sea 🌬️🌺. The beach was calm and peaceful 🧘. Walking barefoot on the cool, damp sand felt grounding and refreshing 🏖️👣. It’s the perfect spot to relax, reflect, or simply enjoy the serene beauty of nature 🌿💭. There are plenty of shops along the shore 🛍️, hinting that the evenings here must be lively and vibrant 🎉🌆.

Nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of Mylapore, Chennai, the Kapaleeshwarar Temple is a magnificent testament to ancient Dravidian architecture and spiritual heritage. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, revered here as Sundareshwarar alongside Goddess Meenakshi, this temple dates back to the 7th century CE.
I recently visited the Kapaleeshwarar Temple during the rainy weather, and it was an absolutely beautiful and peaceful experience. The temple looked wonderful in the rain, with the droplets glistening on the ancient stone carvings and the colorful gopuram shining even brighter. The air was cool and refreshing, filled with the fragrance of wet earth and temple incense. The architecture and divine atmosphere made the whole place feel magical — a perfect blend of spirituality and heritage. Watching devotees walk barefoot on the wet stone floors, hearing the temple bells, and seeing the reflection of the temple lights on the rainwater added to the charm. If you ever get a chance, visit this temple during the monsoon — it’s a breathtaking experience you’ll never forget.

The Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore, Chennai, is far more than a place of worship; it’s a vibrant, living testament to Dravidian architectural brilliance and profound spiritual history. Dedicated to Lord Shiva (Kapaleeshwarar) and Goddess Parvati (Karpagambal), the sheer scale and artistry of the temple are immediately captivating. The towering, seven-tiered Rajagopuram, adorned with thousands of intricately sculpted, brightly colored figures, commands awe and sets the stage for the sanctity within. Stepping inside, the atmosphere transitions from the bustling Mylapore streets to one of deep serenity. The main shrines, particularly the west-facing Kapaleeshwarar and the north-facing Karpagambal, radiate a powerful sense of devotion. Visitors should take time to appreciate the legend of Goddess Parvati worshipping Shiva here in the form of a peahen, a tale immortalized by the ancient Punnai tree on the premises. From the sacred temple tank (Kapali Tirtha) to the daily rituals, the temple offers a rich, immersive cultural experience that is essential for anyone seeking history, art, or spiritual reflection in Chennai. It truly is a masterpiece of faith and craftsmanship.

Had the pleasure of visiting on Diwali, we received an insightful tour around the temple grounds outlining Hindu customs, beliefs and temple practices. This is a prominent Shiva temple and is decorated in hand carved wooden statues which ate repainted every 5 years. You can't help to reflect on blessings of the temple and the focus on the themes of masculine and feminine harmonies (which is explained in more detail during the tour). Please note non hindus can only walk the grounds and cannot enter the shrine The temple is also an active kitchen for the homeless and lower castes. When you arrive there is a shoe storage stand by the main door for a price of 100rpi. Guides will be lingering near the shoe storage stand and around the temple grounds. Highly recommend bringing enough cash to donate to the temple, people attending the kitchen and the guide. Please agree a price with the guide first to avoid being overcharged but there is a cash machine near by if you're running low.

If you list some iconic must-visit places in Chennai, the Mylapore Kapaleeshwarar temple will be one of them. The Kapaleeshwarar Temple is located right in the heart of Mylapore, surrounded by the theppakulam (temple tank) and busy shopping streets (mada streets). I visited in September just before the Navaratri festival. The streets were colourful and traditional, filled with beautiful Golu dolls. The main shrines are dedicated to Lord Shiva (Kapaleeshwarar) and Goddess Parvati (Karpagambal). Despite the busy city, inside the temple, you feel a deep sense of peace and divine energy. The rituals and the decorated deities create a moving, spiritual ambience.

This Sacred Hindu temple was believed to be built in the 7th century by the Pallava dynasty. The moment you enter, you will get positive energy, the craftsmanship is simply superb. The ancient Murals are just beautiful. More Importantly, you will literally feel the presence of Mahadev here. Mahadev’s face through the Diya lights will bring goosebumps. Very clean and very well maintained temple.

It is one of the oldest and powerful Shiva temples, which is located in the middle of Chennai. One of the best landmarks of Hinduism in Chennai. Even though it is in mid of Chennai, inside the temple premises, you feel such a divine and spiritual attainment. Both Shiva and Ambal Sannithi give pleasant and divine feelings. You will feel more relaxed after getting dharshan from Shiva and Ambaal. Mostly in the evening, cultural programmes which reflect our traditional and together chanting of the Shiva Puranam give a higher elevation of our spiritual level.

The circular framing in the image reveals the traditional mandapam architecture, a pillared hall where devotees gather for worship, festivals, and rituals. The Kapaleeshwarar Temple reflects classic Dravidian architecture and is a masterpiece of Tamil temple heritage, originally built during the 7th century by the Pallavas and later expanded by the Vijayanagara kings. The temple complex honors Lord Shiva as Kapaleeshwarar and Goddess Parvati as Karpagambal, embodying grace, fertility, and divine power. Steeped in devotional history, this temple is not only a place of worship—but a timeless cultural landmark that has preserved Chennai’s spiritual identity for over 1,300 years. the Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore, Chennai, one of the most revered temples dedicated to Lord Shiva in South India. The towering rajagopuram (eastern gateway tower) dominates the frame, adorned with hundreds of finely sculpted deities, sages, celestial beings, and mythological figures that narrate stories from ancient Shaivite tradition. Rising beside it is the Dwajasthambam (holy flag mast)covered in gold plating and aligned directly with the sanctum symbolizing a sacred axis that connects the physical temple to the divine cosmos.

I visited this temple around 10:30 AM on a Thursday, and it was quite busy, which shows how much devotion people here have. Just before the main entrance, I noticed a small chapel stand, open for free to visitors. Inside the temple, there are multiple idols of different gods—it’s not dedicated to just one deity. The sculptures and architecture are truly impressive, reflecting the temple’s rich heritage, as it is said to have been constructed around the 8th century. I personally prefer old temples, and this one stands out with its intricate carvings and spiritual atmosphere. There is also a temple pond within the premises, which I couldn’t visit this time, but it adds to the traditional charm. For anyone interested in experiencing ancient temples with great sculptures and strong cultural significance, this temple is a must-visit. Accessibility is also convenient, as the Vadapalani Metro Station is nearby, making it easy for commuters.

This beautifully maintained green oasis features eight distinct sub-gardens, an artificial duck pond, and ample open seating areas perfect for events or leisurely strolls.
One of the Best Places to Unwind in Chennai This serene and beautifully maintained spot in Chennai offers excellent accessibility, making it convenient to reach from any part of the city. It’s a perfect destination to spend quality time with family or to enjoy a peaceful moment alone. The calm atmosphere truly soothes the mind and helps you relax. The restrooms are clean and well-maintained, ensuring a hygienic experience for all visitors. With nominal entry fees, it’s a value-for-money escape within the city. It’s also a fantastic location for photoshoots with your near and dear ones, thanks to its scenic setting and elegant backdrops. Despite the number of visitors, the place felt neglected and did not live up to the hype. The entry fee of ₹75 for adults feels overpriced considering the current condition. The garden might look beautiful during specific flower festivals, but on regular days it lacks proper upkeep and does not justify its reputation. Needs much better maintenance to truly match the expectations set for a botanical attraction.

Semmozhi Poonga (Botanical Garden), Chennai A refreshing green spot in the city with a wide variety of trees and flowers. There’s a play area for kids, plenty of benches to sit and relax, and the garden is also popular with couples. The floral clock is the main attraction here, and the animal figures made with wire add a creative touch. Entry is ₹75 per person, parking is good, and it’s a nice place for photography or a peaceful walk. Overall, a decent garden to spend a couple of hours, especially with family or friends.

Opposite this Semmozhi Park is the Kalaingar Century Park, which is good..But the high cost of entrance fee of Rs100 per adult and Rs 50 per child below 12yrs is only for entry.. Inside u have to buy separate tickets for Glass house, Bird park and Zip line.... The entrance ticket for bird park is Rs 150 for anyone and is too pricy for what it offers...You have to buy a separate ticket of Rs500 if u want to feed the birds.....This is atrocious..... Nestled in the vibrant locality of Triplicane, the Arulmigu Sri Parthasarathyswamy Temple is a stunning 8th-century marvel dedicated to Lord Krishna. This sacred site, revered as one of the 108 Divya Desams, showcases intricate carvings and majestic towers that reflect its rich heritage. The temple's name translates to 'the charioteer of Arjuna,' highlighting Krishna's pivotal role in the Mahabharata.
What a temple is this. Loved this. I went this weekend and found one of the beautiful temple. I feel that the temple needs so more cleaning and hygiene due to huge crowd and will work better than now. I really felt blessed to get a chance to visit these places. The only thing I found about the priests, they are always into rush in any famous temples. Even though less crowd they always ask devotees to go out as fast as they can. But if you see positive sides then one of the best temple to visit in Chennai. Lovely.

The Parthasarathy Temple in Triplicane is one of Chennai’s most treasured spiritual landmarks. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams. Built in the 8th century by the Pallavas, this temple radiates divinity and preserves the city’s deep cultural and devotional heritage. The presiding deity here is Lord Parthasarathy (Krishna as the charioteer of Arjuna). Within the complex you’ll also find shrines of Yoga Narasimha, Lord Rama with Sita and Lakshmana, Lord Lakshmi Ranganatha, Lakshmi Varadaraja, Vedavalli Thayar, and the revered Alwars. The experience is like visiting multiple temples at once, each radiating its own unique energy. What to Expect: Atmosphere: Serene yet lively, with devotional chants and the fragrance of incense filling the air. Parking:Ample space is available for both 2-wheelers and 4-wheelers, which makes visiting convenient even during busy hours. Shops:Right outside the temple, you’ll find plenty of shops selling traditional items, including vastrams (clothes for vigrahas), flowers, and puja essentials—perfect if you want to take something back for your home deity. Photography:Do note that photography is not allowed inside the temple, helping preserve its sanctity. Nearby Attractions: The iconic Marina Beach is just about 700 meters away, making it easy to combine your spiritual visit with a walk by the sea. 🙏 The Parthasarathy Temple is a place of worship and journey into Chennai’s soul. Whether you are a devotee, a lover of history, or simply someone seeking peace, this temple is worth experiencing. ⭐ Recommended for: Families, devotees, history lovers, and anyone who wants to soak in authentic Chennai tradition.

Arulmigu Sri Parthasarathyswamy Temple – Triplicane, Chennai Visited this ancient temple in central Chennai and was deeply moved by its spiritual ambiance and rich heritage. Here's what stood out: History & Architecture One of Chennai’s oldest surviving temples, originally built by the Pallavas in the 6th–8th century, then expanded by the Cholas and later Vijayanagara kings . A proud Divya Desam, praised in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham by the Alvars . Features classic Dravidian structure: towering Raja Gopuram, ornate stone pillars, 36-pillared mandapam, and detailed carvings . Multiple Forms of Perumal Central shrine houses Lord Parthasarathy (Krishna–Charioteer of Arjuna), unique with a moustache (“Meesai Perumal”) and holding only a conch (no discus), believed to bear Bheeshma’s arrow scars from Kurukshetra . Other shrines honor Yoga Narasimha, Rama, Gajendra Varadaraja, and Ranganatha, making it a revered Panchamurthi sthalam . Meesai Perumal & Variants The moustached form is an iconic visual; during certain days of Vaikunta Ekadasi, he's shown without a moustache, symbolizing humility . The temple also includes a distinct shrine for Yoga Narasimha, with its own entrance and dhvajastambha . Prasadam The Ven Pongal served here is particularly sweet and rich, made with extra ghee and cashews—believed to soothe the deity's arrow wounds . Common temple prasadam like Puliyodarai is also loved by devotees . Location & Atmosphere Situated in the heart of Triplicane, just a few minutes from Marina Beach, yet it feels like a peaceful oasis . Real devotees comment on its positive aura, dedicated priests, and well-maintained grounds . Festivals & Events Major celebrations include Chittirai Brahmotsavam, Vaikunta Ekadasi, and the Masi (February–March) Theppam (float festival) in the temple tank . The annual Ramanujar festival is significant—legend says his father performed a Putrakameshti yagna here and received the blessing that Ramanuja would be born . Summary A divine blend of ancient architecture, living tradition, and deep Vaishnava devotion—this temple is high on my list for anyone seeking spiritual depth or historical richness in Chennai. The sight of Meesai Perumal, the serene tank, and the lusciously sweet prasadam make it unforgettable.

Thiruvellukani or Sri Parthasarathi Perumal Kovil is a magnificent ancient temple where Sri Krishna is worshipped as Parthasarathi - the Charioteer to Arjuna. Allikeni, refers to a pond full of lily! In a departure from other temple sculptures, the approximately 10 ft tall Idol of Parthasarathi often referred as Moolavar (Main dirty) inside the sanctum sactorum sports a moustache, which is unique to only this temple. In contrast, the Utsav moorti or the idol which is used to circumabulate the temple during poojas and special occasions, has a face marked with wounds made by the arrows during the 18 days kurukshetra or mahabharata war. One can see the consort of Parthasarathi- Sri Mahalakshmi, referred to here as Vedavalli Thayar. The temple was first built by the Cholas in the 6th century and subsequently other kings, added structures to the main temple. One can find sanctums for Sri Narasimhar, Sri Ranganathar, Sri seetha ramar, Sri thayar And Sri Anjaneya/ Hanuman. One must visit this temple to blissfully explore the magnificence and the divinity of Sri Krishna and Mahalaxmi.

Visited Annai Velankanni Shrine in Besant Nagar on 11th October this year, and it was such a peaceful experience. The Annai Velankanni Shrine in Besant Nagar, Chennai, is a revered Catholic church dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health (Annai Velankanni) — a title of the Virgin Mary. It was built as a smaller replica of the famous Velankanni Church in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, which is often called the “Lourdes of the East.” The Besant Nagar shrine was established in the 1970s, mainly to serve devotees in Chennai who could not travel to Velankanni. Over the years, it has become one of the city’s most loved landmarks, attracting people of all faiths. Located near Elliot’s Beach, the church is known for its beautiful white façade, peaceful ambience, and evening masses held with the soothing sound of the sea in the background.

This stunning Gothic-style church, dedicated to Our Lady of Valankani is a must-visit. This is the newly constructed church just opposite the old shrine , nestled in the heart of Besant Nagar and right beside the beach. The intricate architecture, serene atmosphere, makes it an unforgettable experience.. The beauty of the stained-glass windows is so beautiful, the melodious chants, and the aura of devotion that penetrates here is another level of divine experiences. The church is opened in the morning and is closed in the afternoon and reopened around 5pm in the evening, plan accordingly while visiting this church, but the old shrine is open always. . Plenty of restaurants around to explore as well. The beach just beside it is clean and well maintained.

On a Monday, we visited Besant Nagar Annai Velankanni Church and Shrine after a long time. The shrine was maintained very neatly ( Everybody leave their shoes, chapels outside) and devotedly prayed to their core. The devotees donated sarees to the Matha Statue and instantly it will be wore and they piosly pray for their betterments, thanks givings for the goodness that they were able to get from their prayers. Many lighting candles in front of the shrine chappal. Many offered flowers and garlands. We can also feel the sanctity in the shrine, with bunch of joyful and satisfied mind in our heart. There are reverend fathers available in shrine area to give special blessings to all the devotees attending the shrine and offer their advices and guidances. The tall structure of the church and the inside architecture are very very beautiful as well as very neatly maintained. The benches provided in the church for praying in a silent manner to get the peaceful and satisfied mind during their visit. Since the feast of Annai Velankanni Church was started, the parking space is temporarily closed in side the campus. There are adequate arrangements of police for the security and proper traffic controlling by the Shrine. Altogether it was a pleasant and peaceful visit.

Had a good darshan, crowd was vibrant and it was flag hoisting time. Well maintained and coordinated inside the temple. Church entrance is crowded and parking facility was not there. Road got jammed due to evening traffic and the Church function. Better avoid driving your own vehicle, if so park far and enter. Enjoy the Besant Nagar beach and exit. :)

A quite and peaceful place next to the Basant beach. There’s a small chapel in front of the church where the devotees can pay their respects while the church is closed during non-mass hours. The architecture is quite beautiful with lighting effects. The place is visible from a distance so it gets easier for anyone to locate it. There’re a lot of small convenience stores and food places nearby for quick stops.

“Went to MGM with friends on Oct 4 using the offer price of ₹589 (it ended on Oct 5). Had an amazing time — all the rides were open and the evening foam party was super fun! The crowd was a bit higher than usual, but overall it was a great experience!”

Good place to hang out with friends and families. Sometimes offers might be there in their site so check it once before going directly to ticket counter for buying tickets. They have normal ticket (need to wait if crowded) and priority pass ticket (no waiting in queue) Plenty of parking spaces available but it is 200m away from entrance. For car -100rs and bike it’s 50rs as parking fee. Good adventurous rides are available like ranger, roller coaster, water coaster, etc. Swimming pool, wave pool, waterfall, rain dance floor are available to have fun. Wave pool is small when compared with other theme park. If you are going with girl child or girls then be safe since everyone is enjoying in pool. I don’t think, there is a separate pool for kids & women. By evening time there will be a dance floor lightening with few dancers and anyone can go and dance with them if you want.

This place is on the ECR and on the main road. People coming from north Chennai, should be starting early. I advice people to be here @10 am sharp to start early and enjoy all the rides. That too on weekends it is highly crowded and you have to wait at least 30 mins for each ride. Area of this place is not huge to cover it as like queensland. All rides are enjoyable with friends and family. Canteen is available here, no outside foods are allowed here. Prices of food is ok. Quality and quantity also ok. Few rides are really mind blowing and thrilling experience. Water games are always best in MGM. So start early and enjoy all the games till the evening. Auto or cab from here to return home may be very costly. So plan it accordingly.

It was not much crowded. Didn’t wait in queue to sit on any ride. All ride were functional and we were able to go multiple times in each ride. Kids enjoyed too since it was their first time. Water park was also wonderful. Wave poll, rain dance and kids area in the pool were too much fun. Lockers are available there to keep your stuffs and enter the pool. Food and water are available inside to purchase. Food is not as expensive as I expected, 80₹ for veg fried rice, 40₹ for orange juice etc. It was ok.

I felt refreshed and excited all at once while enjoying the water rides. However, I noticed the water's high level of chloroform, which was a bit concerning. I hope the park takes steps to ensure the safety of the water for everyone 💧. #AmusementParkFun #WaterRides #SafetyFirst

It definitely is not worth the price at all. There are very few rides that an adult would enjoy for the price we pay. If you have been to Wonderla, this is ten times a downgrade for the high price of a ticket. In terms of dry rides, Queensland is better and cheaper. And don't even ask me about water rides; only one was functional when I went. You can definitely have fun if you go as a gang, but I would personally save up some money and time and visit Wonderla for a fulfilling adventure park fun time with friends.

Dakshina Chitra Heritage Museum in Chennai offers a comprehensive experience of South Indian culture, traditions, and artworks. The museum features 18 historical houses and showcases art, crafts, music, and dance forms from four major South Indian states. Visitors can explore exhibits on pre-colonial clothing, farming practices, and architecture. Additionally, the museum hosts performances and has stalls selling traditional jewelry, fashion items, and souvenirs.
I recently spent some time at the Dakshina Chitra Heritage Museum, and it turned out to be a truly enriching experience. The museum provides a well-curated window into the traditional lifestyles, architecture, and cultural practices of the southern states of India. Each section is designed to reflect how communities lived, worked, and expressed their beliefs, making it feel like you’re walking through a living timeline. The recreated homes, everyday objects, textiles, and craft displays offer a thoughtful representation of the region’s past. It’s the kind of place where you can pause at every corner and discover something meaningful, so setting aside at least a couple of hours is ideal if you want to take in the details. My visit happened to be on a weekday when the footfall was quite low. Because of that, a few sections were not operational and some digital displays were turned off. The café inside also seemed closed at the time. Even so, the quiet atmosphere allowed me to explore freely at my own pace, without the usual rush. There are also a few shops within the premises featuring traditional crafts, artworks, and souvenirs inspired by the cultures represented in the museum. They’re worth browsing if you enjoy taking home something rooted in heritage. Overall, it’s a calm and insightful place to visit, especially for anyone with an interest in culture, history, or crafts. Just make sure to go before closing hours so you don’t miss out on the complete experience.

It’s more like a small village than a museum. You get to walk through old South Indian style houses, see how people lived, and even try things like pottery and block printing. The place is peaceful with lots of trees and spots to sit, and the small shops have some good handmade stuff. It can get hot in the afternoon and a bit crowded on weekends, but if you go in the morning it’s a calm and enjoyable outing with family or friends

I recently visited the Dakshina Chitra Heritage Museum that offers a fascinating glimpse into the southern Indian region's rich cultural heritage and history. It was unique experience to explore the exhibits which reflected the ancient livelihood and evolution. You can get glimpses of each southern indian state how they used to live and and experience the culture and belives they follow though the exibits. From the household needs to vibrant textiles, the museum's collection is a treasure trove of artifacts that showcase the region's unique history. With 2-3 hours needed to fully appreciate each exhibit, I would recommend planning your visit carefully to make the most of your time. Unfortunately, my weekday visit coincided with a lull in visitors, resulting in some exhibits being closed and some LCDs/TVs being switched off. I guess there was one eatery inside which was also not functional at that time. Despite this, I appreciated the opportunity to explore the museum without the crowds. The shops inside displays a range of articles related to history and ancient lifestyles, making it easy to take a piece of the experience home. From antique artworks to handicrafts, the selection is thoughtful and well-curated. Overall, the museum was peaceful and good for anyone interested in history, culture, and the arts. Be sure to plan your visit before 6 pm to experience the exhibits in full swing. With its rich collection and engaging displays, this museum makes you experience the rich culture and heritage.

Tamil and Kerala area will consume most of your time. They have different activities such as Mehendi, pottery, painting, playing instrument for which you can pay and do the activities. The cost of these activities starts with ₹100 atleast. The fees of dakhshinchitra on weekends is a big more than weekdays. There are many opportunities to click amazing photos

Had a wonderful time here, great place to bring kids to learn about their cultural history from an architecture, interior design, and fabrics perspective. Lots to see and do. There is a cute cafe inside that offers a selection of South Indian snacks and fresh juices. I suggest bringing cold water or electric fans to keep you and any kids cool as the place is very hot during the day, and closes early in the evening. I wish they were open later in the day when the weather is cooler, or if they had more air conditioned spaces for people to rest.

Located in Perambur, Chennai Rail Museum is a fascinating indoor and outdoor museum showcasing vintage engines, coaches, and miniature train rides. Opened in 2002 on a 6.25-acre site near Villivakkam, the museum boasts a rich rail heritage of India with an impressive collection of steam engines dating back to the British Raj era.
I visited on a weekday morning with an entry ticket that included a free toy train ride. This place is a great spot if you're into trains. The Chennai Rail Museum has some really old trains and engines on display. I loved walking around and seeing all the vintage stuff, some of them are huge and really old, like from the British times. During my visit, many school students from different schools had come and they were really enjoying it a lot and super excited during the toy train ride. Even I enjoyed it. They also have a restaurant set up inside a train coach, but it was not open during my visit. Overall, it’s a calm and neat place to visit. If you're in Chennai and want to try something offbeat, this place is worth checking out.

A place to know about Railway coach manufacturing and its origin. Recommended place for students. The railway department can initiate more features to be more interactive and interesting to visitors. It has a restroom facility, kids play area, Toy train for a short joy ride. Entry fee (includes Toy Train ride) Children Rs 15/- Adults Rs 40/-. Worth a visit. Models created by the waste metal of the train is one good attraction.

We visited this place during public holiday and during heavy rain day. So there was no crowd at all we could enjoy the place at the maximum. In my opinion the Maintenance and the collections are very nice. There are many real models as well as mini models to get best experience. History of The ICF is very well portraited . The indoor exhibition as well as the outdoor exhibition was lovable. Toy train ride was ultimate. Also there is a an exhibition where you will find a miniature train model. Don’t miss to see that. It is located closer to Thai train station. I would say the places filmed. It is worth to visit it will take 2.5 hours to complete the tour. Me and kids enjoyed it very well. Thanks to Southern railway.

Could use lots of improvement!!! Chennai rail museum has both indoor and outdoor parts. The indoor museum is air-conditioned and has models of trains, photographs and various parts of the engine and compartment. This part is good. However, the outdoor part is less maintained. I personally feel that there is potential for immense maintenance for the engines and compartment. All the compartments could be improved so that people can go inside and visit. Also, indian railways with its immensely rich varieties of locomotives can add some more to the museum's collection. The grounds are overgrown with grass and has puddles of water making it difficult to go to various exhibits. Comparatively, the outdoor museum is filled with mosquitos. There is a small park for kids. The washroom needs regular cleaning. There is no canteen to buy food, however, an area for sitting and having food is arranged.

The Ripon Building, located near Chennai Central railway station, is a stunning all-white structure completed in 1913 to house the Corporation of Chennai. It is a prime example of Neoclassical architecture and features intricate detailing and decor. Named after Lord Ripon, it has undergone significant renovations to maintain its original grandeur. Today, it serves as the headquarters for the Greater Chennai Corporation and offers government services such as obtaining birth certificates.
The Ribbon Building in Chennai is a historic landmark and the headquarters of the Greater Chennai Corporation. It is one of the oldest municipal buildings in India and a prime example of colonial architecture. It is named after Lord Ripon, the then Viceroy of India, who is regarded as the "Father of Local Self-Government in India." The Ripon Building was commissioned in 1913 and inaugurated in 1917. The building is spread over an area of 85,000 square feet with three floors. It includes a central clock tower that is 43 meters tall, with a clock known as the Westminster Chime Clock, installed in 1913 and still functional. It has been the headquarters of the Greater Chennai Corporation since its inception and continues to serve as the administrative hub of the city. The building is a symbol of Chennai's colonial history and urban governance.

A casual sketch of the Ripon Building turned into reality when I found myself inside it for a heritage walk. My sketchbook feels like pure magic! The Ripon Building is a stunning example of colonial architecture in Chennai. Its pristine white façade and intricate detailing make it a visual delight for history and architecture enthusiasts. Walking through its halls during a heritage tour felt like stepping back in time. The building stands as a testament to the city's rich heritage and continues to be an iconic landmark. A must-visit for anyone interested in Chennai’s architectural gems!
Mookambika B — Google review
The Ripon Building, an architectural marvel in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, stands as the headquarters of the Greater Chennai Corporation. This iconic white structure, located near the Chennai Central Railway Station, exemplifies neoclassical architecture, blending Ionic and Corinthian styles. It is a significant remnant of British-era construction and a testament to the city's colonial history. The foundation stone of the Ripon Building was laid in 1909 by the Earl of Minto, then Viceroy and Governor-General of India. Designed by G.S.T. Harris and constructed by Loganatha Mudaliar, the building took four years to complete and was officially commissioned in 1913. It was named after Lord Ripon, the Governor-General of British India, who was known as the father of local self-government. The building is rectangular in shape, measuring 85 meters in length and 32 meters in width, with a central clock tower rising to a height of 43 meters. The Westminster Quarter chiming clock, installed by Oakes and Co. in 1913, features a mechanical key system and four bells cast by Gillet and Johnston. The structure comprises three floors, with the first floor covering approximately 2,800 square meters. Its walls were built with stock bricks and lime mortar plaster, while the original ground-floor flooring of Cuddapah Slate was later replaced with marble. The roof is supported by teak wood joists, enhancing its durability and aesthetic appeal. Over time, the Ripon Building has undergone renovations to preserve its grandeur. In September 2015, an annexe building named "Amma Maaligai" was inaugurated behind the main structure. This addition houses various departments of the Chennai Corporation, while the offices of the Mayor and Commissioner continue to operate from the original building. The annexe was constructed with modern sustainability features, including a water-cooled air-conditioning system and heat-reflective roof tiles to reduce energy consumption. The surrounding area has evolved over the years, with developments such as the Chennai Metro and the modernization of the Central Railway Station complex enhancing the locality's overall appearance. The Ripon Building remains an administrative hub and a symbol of Chennai’s rich heritage, attracting history and architecture enthusiasts. Though primarily a working office, access to its interiors is generally restricted to official business or special heritage tours. In front of the building, a well-maintained lawn features statues of Lord Ripon and Sir Thiyagaraya Chetty, further emphasizing its historical significance. The building’s elegant appearance, intricate detailing, and colonial charm continue to make it a notable landmark in Chennai, representing both its past and its enduring legacy in urban governance.

The Ripon Building is one of Chennai’s most beautiful landmarks. Built in 1913 and named after Lord Ripon, it is the headquarters of the Greater Chennai Corporation. What impressed me most is its all-white neoclassical design with a tall clock tower. The Westminster chime clock, which still needs daily winding, makes the building unique. The new Amma Maaligai annexe adds modern facilities, while the Ripon Building itself preserves its heritage. Together, they show how Chennai values both its history and progress.

Located along the Marina Beach Road, it is one of the must-visit beaches in Chennai. The beach attracts crowds from early morning to evening for fun activities and to enjoy the cool sea breeze.
Best experience you can get here. We went on a weekday and it’s more quieter than marina beach during night. Nice walking path in the beach and it’s clean. There is also skating park for kids. The shops are clean and as it’s weekday not all shops opened. Overall a must visit beach in Chennai. Don’t miss this even if u miss Marina beach.

We visited Besant Nagar Beach early in the morning last week, and it turned out to be one of the most peaceful and refreshing starts to the day. The soft sound of waves, the cool breeze, and the first light of dawn over the sea created a truly serene atmosphere. It’s amazing how calm and clean the beach feels before the crowds arrive, with a few joggers, fitness enthusiasts, and fishermen adding a gentle rhythm to the morning scene. The walkway near the beach is well-maintained, perfect for a quiet stroll or a brisk morning walk. Several small tea and coffee stalls were already open, where locals gathered for chai and friendly chats, giving the place a warm community feel. Watching the sunrise was the highlight — the sky changing colors from pale pink to golden orange was a sight worth waking up early for. What stood out most was the cleanliness and sense of safety. The police patrols and volunteers keeping things organized made the experience even better. Besant Nagar Beach is clearly one of Chennai’s gems — a perfect spot not only for families but also for anyone seeking a moment of calm before the city wakes up. Highly recommended for early risers!

What else you expect in a beach. A pleasant walk, close sea-to-shore, clean environment, good tea shop, beautiful view and warm cozzy crowd. All in one place. Come and enjoy with your family. Obviously now Marina came with Red Flag beach (Aug-2025), that is awesome in its own way.

Had fun time with family and kids.. having the sea as the backdrop there are a lot of busy shops selling fish, toys, mind games and luck shops. One can go on for a joy ride in a pony. The aromatic fish is one attractive feature to the beach. The beach is cleanly maintained and a portico of wooden planks have been laid to guide you to the beach from the main road. Nice place to hang out with your friends and family. Like the waves never stall, the memories keep on never ending.

The park area with its various rides is also worth exploring and makes the visit even more enjoyable. A peaceful place surrounded by trees, with a large and grand temple. There are also smaller temples dedicated to other gods. It's a great spot for meditation, though the abundance of mosquitoes in the open sitting hall in front of the temple can be distracting, likely due to its open nature. It would have been nice to have direct access to the beach from inside the temple. A nice place to spend some quality time in peace.

The Shirdi Sai Baba Temple here is one of those rare places where you instantly feel connected with nature. The sound of birds, the gentle breeze through the trees, and the calm surroundings create a truly peaceful vibe – something I personally love. There’s adequate parking space, and even a small snack stall inside if you want a quick bite. The atmosphere is pleasant, and the staff are friendly and polite, adding to the overall warm and welcoming experience. The temple is clean and silently maintained, which makes it ideal for a calm visit. Earlier there was beach access, but it’s currently not available. Even without it, the natural surroundings and serene setting make this temple well worth visiting.

Visited the temple with great exicitement and anxiety on 18th Oct 2025 at 5 pm. But to my surprise and disappointment I could feel No vibration of Sai's Presence. No lamps were lit before the variety of deities in the complex except Shri Guru Datta. Felt very bad when visited the mandir for the first time. No poojari was present for performing harati or distributing prasad. Even a roadside Ganapathy temple would have more divine vibration. Utterly disappointed. When the trustees could not maintain a temple why they have built such a big temple and insult Shree Saibaba like this. Really horrible. A True divine experience in the lap of nature. This spacious temple located in a private premises is open for public from 8am to 12:30noon during Monday to Saturday. Sundays are closed. The premises hosts multiple small temples of various Gods & Goddesses for Darshan. A true reflection of Shirdi Sai, one can find the Dhuni, Chawadi, Palki, Khandoba temple etx. Parking space is ample for both 2&4 wheelers. For elders one must remember that theres a lot of walking and staircases involved for the darshan. So one may plan accordingly. Premises also hosts a small store for stationary, gifts, posters & idols of Sai. They also sell small plants and organice manure locally made. There is also a Dhyana Mandir, in the basement.

Though not as much big as Bangalore, it's a nice place to visit. Outside the temple people are literally throwing the plates, food wastes just like that. Kindly people visiting here keep the premises clean.

ISKCON Chennai also known as Sri Sri Radha Krishna Mandir is at Sholinganallur , Chennai. The temple is very big and it's very beautiful and if you visit during festivals like Janmastami, there will be huge crowd but the temple looks very beautiful with all the lightings and decoration, especially in the evenings. I used to visit the temple when I was chennai. During normal days and weekends , there won't be much crowd but during any auspicious days the crowd will be huge. The prasadam is good and you can also find books etc.,

Chennai Snake Park is a family-friendly destination that houses a diverse collection of snakes in cages and crocodiles in open-air enclosures. Situated adjacent to the expansive Guindy National Park, it serves as one of the city's prominent ex-situ conservation sites for reptiles.
Interesting place to visit and learn about some reptiles. Tickets are very reasonable at only Rs. 40 per adult. Not very crowded on a weekend so one can explore very nicely. There's a cafe outside where food is good and reasonably priced. Kudos to the park for the conservation efforts as well.

Chennai Snake Park – Informative and Fascinating Visit Visited the Chennai Snake Park recently and had an enjoyable and educational experience. It’s a great spot for families, especially kids, to learn about reptiles in a safe and well-maintained environment. Entry & Charges: Parking fee: ₹50 for vehicles Entry ticket: ₹30 per person Camera charge: ₹20 What to Expect: A wide variety of snakes on display, including both venomous and non-venomous species. There are also crocodiles, lizards, and turtles in well-secured enclosures. A small museum section inside showcases preserved specimens of reptiles and amphibians that have died naturally—very educational. Informative boards and explanatory texts in English and Tamil are displayed near every enclosure, helping visitors learn about the species, habitats, and conservation efforts. Suitable For: Great for school trips, family outings, or nature lovers. The park is not too big, so it's easy to walk through in about an hour. Overall: A good mix of education and wildlife exploration. Affordable, well-maintained, and worth visiting if you're in the Guindy area. Be sure to go early to avoid the crowd and heat!

The Chennai Snake Park is located right next to the Children’s Park of Guindy National Park, though you’ll need to buy a separate ticket to enter. It’s at the end of the route, but definitely worth visiting. You’ll get to see a wide variety of snakes, many of them actively moving, which is fascinating to watch. Apart from snakes, there are also other reptiles like tortoises and more. Sometimes they even host shows and demonstrations, which add to the experience. A special highlight is the artist inside who makes portraits at a very minimal price — his work is amazing, and it’s a must-try if you’re visiting. Overall, it’s a wonderful place to explore after Guindy National Park, especially for those interested in reptiles and wildlife.
Roshan L — Google review
I recently visited the Chennai Snake Park, and it turned out to be a truly fascinating and educational experience. Located within the Guindy National Park premises, this park is a must-visit for anyone interested in reptiles, wildlife conservation, or simply exploring something unique in Chennai. The first thing that struck me was the peaceful and natural environment of the park. Surrounded by greenery, the place was well-maintained and clean, providing a refreshing escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The layout of the park was simple yet informative, making it easy to explore at a comfortable pace. The park houses a wide variety of snake species, including both venomous and non-venomous types. From cobras, vipers, and kraits to pythons and rat snakes, the diversity was impressive. Each enclosure had detailed boards providing information about the species, their habitat, behavior, and importance in the ecosystem. It was quite educational and made the visit even more meaningful. In addition to snakes, the park also features other reptiles such as crocodiles, lizards, and turtles, making it a complete reptile-focused experience. The enclosures were thoughtfully designed, allowing visitors to observe the animals safely and clearly. One of the highlights was the live snake handling show and awareness session conducted by the staff. It was informative and helped dispel common myths and fears about snakes. The handlers demonstrated how snakes are rescued and explained the importance of their role in nature. The staff at the park were friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to answer questions or guide visitors. I appreciated their efforts in promoting wildlife awareness and conservation. Overall, my visit to Chennai Snake Park was both enjoyable and enlightening. It’s a great spot for families, students, nature lovers, or anyone curious about the reptile world. I would highly recommend visiting this park if you're in Chennai — it’s a rare experience that’s both fun and educational.

Shopping
Spencer Plaza, located in Chennai, is a renowned shopping destination with a rich history dating back to the British Raj era. It is considered the oldest shopping mall in India and one of South Asia's most prominent malls. The mall offers a wide range of local and international brands, making it a popular spot for shopping, dining, and entertainment.
After a decade, I revisited Spencer Plaza and was delighted to see it still brimming with charm. As India’s oldest shopping mall, its rich history is palpable in every corridor. The diverse range of shops—from traditional handicrafts to modern brands—offers a unique shopping experience. While newer malls have emerged, Spencer Plaza’s vintage ambiance and cultural significance make it a must-visit. It’s heartening to see it retaining its essence amidst the evolving cityscape.
Sreekanthnaidu G — Google review
Credited with being the first shopping mall in India, this place has stood and is competing with the trend. Though modern malls are being opened, this place has its own charm. Visited this place after over a decades time and it was nice to be in there. The stores here are selling products at affordable price. Clothing, mobiles and accessories etc are available here.
Venkat K — Google review
Spencer Plaza at Anna salai is definitely one of the oldest malls of the city. It is true that it draws less crowd now than it used to in the past. But it is still a great place for buying men and women clothing items for their quality and competitive prices. If compared to more recent malls like Phoenix or Express Avenue, Spencer would give that cosey feeling of malls of early 2000s. The only problem I found was that now it doesn't have a quality food court. All in all, a place worth visiting.
Tabraz S — Google review
Spencer Plaza offers a calm and relaxed shopping experience, unlike the usual crowded malls. Located right in the heart of the city, it’s easily accessible and convenient for everyone. The variety of stores available ensures a good shopping experience, whether you're browsing for clothes, electronics, or souvenirs. The peaceful atmosphere and central location make it a great spot to shop or just spend some quiet time.
Akhil V — Google review
Recently my daughter and I went to buy clothes for my daughter. I thought there would be a lot of high-end clothing stores, but there were only a few stores, and everything else was just cheap stores. I realized that the glamour of 20 years ago is no longer there.
Subramanian M — Google review
I recently visited Spencer Plaza with a friend and was pleasantly surprised. It's not too crowded, which makes for a relaxing shopping experience. They have a great selection of gift items and decorations, perfect for finding something unique. Plus, the prices are reasonable. It's amazing to think this was Chennai's first shopping mall, built way back in 1895! Even though it was rebuilt in 1991 after a fire, it still has that old-world charm. The architecture, especially in the center of the building, is beautiful. If you're looking for a peaceful place to shop with lots of variety, Spencer Plaza is definitely worth a visit. Just a heads up though, the maintenance could be better - some of the escalators weren't working properly.
Balakarthikeyan V — Google review
First time to visit this firstly introduced mall in chennai. Time spent here was worth every minute. Had breakfast and made some shopping here. It was good. No over scene like "You should have our card to make a purchase". Also it literally felt like a maze inside😂 was confused where was the exit and which floor am I.
Nidhin — Google review
This was a must visit place on weekends for the city shoppers - it has now lost its charm with the coming of new malls and multiplexes. Many good shops like Landmark are now closed. For 90s kids, this was a well known place for getting togethers and for those who wanted to watch movies at the nearby Sathyam theatre.

Located on Marina Beach Road in Chennai, it holds significance as one of the historical places in the city. Visitors can explore Swami Vivekananda's chambers and view exhibits featuring photos from his tours of America.
Vivekananda House is a must-visit heritage site in Chennai, rich with history and spiritual significance. I recently visited Vivekananda House and had an inspiring experience. The place is well-maintained and beautifully showcases the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda. One of the highlights of my visit was the 4D VR show, which took us through Swami Vivekananda's powerful and spiritual journey in a truly immersive way. The visuals, sound, and storytelling were amazing—it felt like I was walking alongside him through different phases of his life, especially his journey to the West and his speech at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago. It gave me a deeper understanding of his vision, thoughts, and contribution to Indian philosophy. Overall, it's a must-visit place for anyone interested in history, spirituality, or just looking for inspiration. I left the place feeling motivated and proud of our rich cultural heritage.

Vivekananda House is located right opposite Marina Beach, so the road outside is usually busy — better to plan your visit accordingly. Inside, it’s a peaceful and well-maintained place. The highlights are: 1. VR photography with Swami Vivekananda — a nice experience. 2. Museum exhibits from the time of Swami Vivekananda’s visit in 1897, along with displays related to Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Hindu philosophy, and Indian culture. 3. Meditation hall, offering a calm and silent space. 4. 3D movie of Swami Vivekananda’s famous 1893 Chicago speech, which is presented very well. If you’re a follower of Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, or interested in their ideologies, this place will feel meaningful. Even otherwise, it’s a good museum-like experience and worth visiting at least once

It’s a great place with high spiritual vibes. There is a Meditation room, a VR room where you can see Swami Vivekananda’s story till he went to Chicago. There is a 3D theatre which shows the Swami Vivekananda’s speech at world religious parliament in Chicago. You can feel Swamiji’s aura present in this room when you meditate. The entry ticket is only 50₹, which I feel is very nominal. Outside there is a book stall also they run few yoga and spiritual courses as well. You can see the Marina beach from the top floor. It has got a beautiful view. Had a great experience! I would highly recommend visiting this place.

Situated opposite to the Marina Beach. This is like a museum of Swami Vivekananda, where you can see the photos with the timelines of his life. Very neatly maintained. There are are couple of theatres inside the museum where his Chicago speech, his early life are been portrayed. It will take some time in order to visit the museum. There is also a mediation hall where you can sit and meditate which is described as the place where he used to meditate when he came to Chennai. They do have a bookstore where they sell his books. The ticket charges ₹50 per head. They will also take a photo free of cost and can be downloaded from the link they provide.

I have travelled to and from Chennai via train for a over 3 decades now I think. So the railway station does bring out some nostalgia. The station is quite big with a lot of shops, eateries, etc. It has many of the problems that other stations have like cleanliness. I am seeing a lounge for the first time in a railway station. Unfortunately, I didn't have a card that allowed me to enter. I will always have a soft spot for this railway station.

Chennai Central is one of the best railway stations I have ever visited. The station is well-maintained and offers excellent facilities, including clean waiting areas, food outlets, metro and local train connections — all conveniently located nearby, making travel easier and more comfortable for passengers. The overall experience is very good. The only improvement I would suggest is ensuring regular RPF (Railway Protection Force) presence on all platforms for added safety

It's an amazing idea to build a lighthouse at Marina beach. The view is amazing for the top floor. But there are a lot of points of improvement. There is only one lift. It is old and slow. A 10 floor building should have a modern and faster lift. The space on the top is very narrow. They can accommodate only 20 people max at one time. They give only 10 minutes to enjoy the views. I had several doubts. Why are they not using other floors to allow people to enjoy the view. If they can only use the top floor, then they should have built it bigger to accommodate more people. The idea of a lighthouse is good but execution is very poor. It feels better to have something than have nothing.

Yesterday I visited marina beach and light house is on the bank of sea. Such a big and beautiful light house of chennai is in marina beach and v house area. All perfect with area cleanliness and routine. Many buses available to this point. Many private car auto available and you can go any time here. Yes little traffic on this route. This place is crowdy on Saturday Sunday evening and morning.

The Chennai Lighthouse is a great place to visit, especially for those who enjoy scenic views. The entry fee is quite reasonable—just ₹20 for Indian adults. However, in my opinion, the viewing time at the top is limited to only 5–10 minutes, which feels too short. It would be much better if visitors were allowed more time to enjoy the panoramic view from the top.

🌊 Chennai Lighthouse I visited the Chennai Lighthouse recently, and honestly, I didn’t expect to be this amazed. Located right on Marina Beach, it gives you one of the best aerial views of the Bay of Bengal. Once you take the elevator up (yes, thankfully no climbing!), you’re greeted with a wide open view of the beach, the sea, and the city stretching far beyond and the sea breeze up there is super refreshing, especially during the evening. 📸 Tip: Go during sunset for the best experience.

Perfect for a family day out! This lighthouse offers incredible views over the city and coast, with affordable tickets Rs.20 for indians and an easy lift ride that’s great for all ages. The museum is both fun and educational, and the peaceful atmosphere at sunset makes for lasting memories.
