Nestled in the heart of Kilmarnock, Dean Castle Country Park spans over 200 acres and offers something for everyone. Visitors can explore scenic trails winding through woodland, open farmland, and wetland areas. The park also features a 14th-century castle museum surrounded by beautifully restored landscapes designed in the early 1900s. With a superb program of events, art galleries, and exhibitions, this friendly tourist attraction is perfect for families.
Amazing place for a morning out. Cafe with coffee, sandwiches and ice cream. Dogs are allowed inside with you to order but must sit outside. There is a covered portion of outdoor seating. Large number of high chairs for children in the dining room. The castle is completely free, three sections to walk into the tour, I was very impressed. Dogs allowed in the courtyard of the castle but not inside, understandably. We just took turns holding the dog or going inside. Beautiful nature trails and a children's play park. Will definitely come back as an easy 20 min walk from the train.

Dean Castle Country Park is a spectacular and absolutely free day out for the whole family! Nestled right in Kilmarnock, this place is an oasis of history and nature that feels a million miles away from the town. The highlight, of course, is the magnificent 14th-century Dean Castle itself. The recent renovations have been done beautifully, and exploring its history and world-class collections of arms and armor is truly captivating. Beyond the castle, the country park is an adventure waiting to happen. We spent hours wandering the woodland paths, spotting wildlife, and just soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The park is clearly a source of pride for the community. The facilities are excellent, and there's a lovely cafe, "The Laird's Table," for a well-deserved coffee and cake. It's a place that caters to everyone, whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or a family looking for a fun day out. Dean Castle Country Park is a treasure. I can't believe it's free to visit. It's a shining example of what a local park can be, and I highly recommend it to anyone in the area or even just passing through.

An Absolute Gem on Glasgow's Doorstep! I cannot recommend Dean Castle and Country Park highly enough. We visited on a whim, looking for a day out that offered something for everyone, and it completely surpassed all our expectations. First and foremost, the wildlife is the star of the show. Walking through the beautiful, mature parkland, we were thrilled to see fallow deer roam in their expansive enclosures. But the animal encounters don't stop there; The park is also home to a charming collection of farm animals, including friendly sheep, curious goats, and wonderfully content-looking pigs. It was an absolute delight for both children and adults alike. The woodland walks are fantastic. The trails are well-signposted and cater to all levels of fitness, offering peaceful, shaded paths that make you forget you're just a stone's throw from the city. The combination of open parkland and dense woodland is simply beautiful in any season. Speaking of location, the proximity to Glasgow is a massive plus. It's incredibly easy to get to, making it the perfect escape from the urban hustle without needing to spend hours in the car. You can be immersed in this tranquil countryside setting in just minutes. The facilities are top-notch. The visitors centre is a great starting point, with helpful staff and interesting information. A huge bonus for families and anyone on a day out: there are plenty of toilets located conveniently around the park, so you're never caught short! After our long walk, we popped into the cafe for a coffee and a bite. It was lovely, with a good selection of hot and cold food, delicious cakes, and a clean, welcoming atmosphere. It was the perfect way to refuel. And then there's the castle itself – the beautifully maintained Dean Castle. The courtyard is immaculate and feels like stepping back in time, while the gardens surrounding it are a delight, filled with colour and carefully tended plants. In summary, Dean Castle and Country Park is a flawless day out. It seamlessly blends history, nature, and modern convenience. We left feeling refreshed, educated, and already planning our next visit. An undeniable 5-star experience
James F — Google review
From my experience, the Dean Castle is one of the best preserved castles in Scotland. We explored the fascinating instrument collection and the impressive armour displays, which made for an amazing experience. After our visit, we enjoyed a delicious coffee and pastry in the cafeteria. The surrounding park is beautiful, with a peaceful river, wildlife and stunning scenery. It was a truly memorable visit.
Luis S — Google review
This place is absolutely beautiful. We went on a day when it was so sunny. Lots of autumn colours. Our dog really enjoyed the walks, some steep hills so if you have trouble I’d say take hiking sticks.
Lucie T — Google review
We had a great day out at Dean Castle Country Park. It was a good place to walk our dog with different trails to follow. Some are more challenging than others but there are some accessible paths. We enjoyed a cake in the cafe which has a covered seating area outside for sitting with your dog. Being Outlander fans we enjoyed visiting and found out some of the prequel series will be filmed there too. The staff in and around the gift shop were very friendly and informative although I suspect it was mainly so they could give our dog some extra fuss. Definitely a place we will revisit when we are back in that part of the world.
Adam B — Google review
The deer are near the car park entrance, right before the castle! 🦌🦌 We went on the Farm Trail thinking we'd see the deer on the way, but turns out they're right at the start 😭 But!!!! The Farm Trail was so good too with horses, goats, ducks etc !!!
Ash I — Google review
Very interesting collection of musical instruments and armour. Our granddaughter really enjoyed dressing up in period pieces. What a nice touch. So nice to be see deer up close. The cafe has really decent food too.

It is the largest museum and gallery space in Ayrshire, attracting over 120,000 visitors annually. The institute features a permanent collection showcasing the town's history and hosts diverse exhibitions highlighting local young talents, contemporary artists, and international works.
Kind caring and very helpful staff. One of the largest libraries left in the area. Great place to join groups, meet people, have an excellent coffee, use a computer or just find a quiet spot to read or relax. The museum is really interesting and holds different exhibitions throughout the year.

Amazing building in Kilmarnock with two museums inside, library, art gallery and a café. Good exhibitions about Robert Burns and Johnnie Walker, plus lots of historical artefacts. Beautiful and interesting. Free entry!
Ana B — Google review
One of my favourite places since childhood yes I know I'm a nerd . But the recent addition of the coffee shop is amazing I love setting up my books n studying here in the 90s n while the atmosphere of the old reference library is different being able to set up laptop n coffee is definitely way of future . Coffee is one of best in town. Cakes are delicious only critism maybe add. Sandwiches and savoury snacks to menu . Art gallery and Musium has constantly changing interesting exhibitions . I'm shocked no other reviews have mentioned the local hero that is Brian the Lion. Over 100 years old and a delight to meet . . The building itself is a very beautiful old building if you have time take a moment. And admire the architecture. Both inside and out and be grateful for the town planners and council who have invested in this beautiful free resource for us all . Use your local library!!

Excellent fiction and non-fiction libraries, museum and art galleries, and a very good resource centre for research of local history. Also doubles up as a polling station during elections

Been going since I was a child. Great experiences for children plenty to see and they have on going events. Worth the visit

Wonderful library and space. Sad it's not open on a Monday rather than a Sunday. Some very good exhibitions here and lovely staff too.
Theresa M — Google review
Awful Sunday service in the cafe. Customers who'd joined the queue after me had their drinks served before ours and the two staff looked to be in a constant state of confusion. We're regulars to the cafe but the cappuccinos were way below the usual standard on this occasion, like a watery instant coffee and lacking the chocolate sprinkles, which I had to request.

As far a parks go, spot on. We didn't get past the first part of the park and cycle area for kids. Plenty of life on the water near by. Brilliant place to teach the kids
Shanna S — Google review
This park comes with added beauty of a small pond and lots of ducks and a couple of huge swan's grabbing a lot of attention, there's a couple of swings n stuff for the kids and benches by the pond to sit down and watch the ducks perform acrobatics.. and yes also a car park available.

Great place for everyone. Lovely lake with swans and ducks, swing park for kids. Plenty parking. Looks great at this time of year.
Robina M — Google review
Pleasant visit was pretty tidy, the sun was shining as well. Had my sandwiches and drink by the pond which was nice. The best thing was that the only Swan came out the pond and started cleaning its feathers and had a nap which was extremely rare to see. Overall made me relaxed and calm.
Anna R — Google review
Kay Park is local for me. A great place to walk the dog, or watch the swans and other birds on the man made lake. There is an interesting monument close to the entrance to the Burns monument centre and inside the centre is a statue of the Bard himself. The centre now has a marriage suite, registry and a local history service. Key Park is a nice place to visit and a great resource for the local community.

Beautiful scenery & open green spaces. Amazing for walkers.

Kay park is in the same area as the Robert burns monument in kilmarnock. It's a really lovely park to go for a walk in and they have a small playground for children. There is also a pond where you can feed the ducks and swans.

Monument
Library
Burns Monument is a prominent site in Kilmarnock's Kay Park, covering 30 acres and featuring an ornamental pond, fountain, and a column commemorating parliamentary reformers. The monument stands at the park's center, honoring Scotland's national bard, Robert Burns. Originally much taller, the monument was damaged and subsequently reduced in height. It now houses a registration office and features a white statue of Burns.
The old Burns monument was much higher but was vandalised, fell into disrepair and the higher parts were taken down. The ground and 1st level are now part of the new Registration office. The statue of Burns is white and a very handsome image of Scotland's bard.
Peter M — Google review
The site of the Scotland's people building. Great facilities but at £15 a day per person to use it, it's a bit steep of a price if you need to go back several times.

Went here recently to see dragged tae the steamie, what a show, amazing, so funny! Went with my mother and great aunt and we used the lift to get to our balcony seats, small but effective lift, toilets a bit small on upper floor, toilets in lower floor larger and have free sanitary products if needed, bars also for alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks and snacks, staff all really nice and helpful.

Great local theatre with friendly staff and great panto this year. Great young performers as well. Well done to all the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Was at the pantomime it was great but the parking was a bit of a let down as my mum has poor mobility.
Susan B — Google review
A really decent gig venue: fairly speedy entrance, decent prices at the bar, clean toilets. Tide Lines gave a great performance.
Gwen S — Google review
The show itself was amazing, but the theatre was extremely hot. No air conditioning at all. I was there with my 15week old baby supporting a friend in her show, and I ended up having to strip him to his nappy because of the heat. I was in the back row, so it wasn't even as though I had loads of people around me.

Howard Park, situated just west of Kilmarnock's town centre, is a serene public park that offers a peaceful retreat for visitors. It boasts top-notch amenities such as a bowling club, children's playground, and impressive monuments. This park provides the perfect setting to bask in the warmth of the sun and indulge in delightful picnics whilst your little ones frolic in the play area. Its location towards the southern part of town gives it an almost rural ambiance.
Great all round park for both people and animals kids park is great for all ages and lots of activities from fitness classes to walking in the park definitely recommend a look. Nice and dogs love the park

Nice little park. Suitable for dog owners. Children's playground also in park.
Stuart N — Google review
Great park relatively flat which is good for our old dog and easier for my wife who is not as able as she used to be. Only issue is no toilets. No parking up the top at the weekends as gates are locked.
J C — Google review
Great place to walk the dog. Takes about 15 - 20 mintues to walk. Wide tarmac paths. Easy access for wheelchairs. Large play park. Easy access for shops. Coffee shop just outside park at Mclennand Drive. I visit here regularly.
Dave L — Google review
Always nice to have a walk through the park. Clean and tidy. Lots of dog walkers .
Louise B — Google review
Brilliant park! Fabulous flat paths for prams, those with mobility concerns, giving them confidence to feel that bit safer while walking and wheelchair users. There are benches placed throughout the park which is great for those of us who get slightly breathless or sore and just need to catch up with ourselves to enjoy more of the park. The play area is well equipped for young children to explore. There are many paths for dogs on the leash to walk without stumbling into one another. The park creates a great sense of freedom and fresh air within a town setting. Thank You for keeping it clean and well maintained.

Whether you're craving British cuisine or exploring international flavors, Cotton Mill Cookhouse & Pub has got you covered. A lovely clean pub restaurant with very friendly staff. I was staying in the premier in attached to the pub and had both my evening meal and breakfast in there. Upon arrival at both meal times the staff were super fast at finding me a table and on both occasions they were spotless and clean (not always the case in busy places). The menu is small but had a nice selection of items from curries, pizzas and standard burgers through to pub classics like pies as well as "fish and chips". I tried the falafel starter followed by the big stack burger in the evening. Both were very good, the burger was really well cooked and everything was served nice and quickly. In the morning I ordered a full English breakfast which was again spot on with all items really well cooked and presented well (some places throw breakfasts onto a plate but not here). The drinks area although self service at breakfast time was again lovely and clean. A nice pub restaurant which I'd happily visit again.
James P — Google review
Excellent breakfast and service. Bit expensive for what it was, but it was tasty and well cooked and as much as you wanted ( not a buffet you are expected to ask for more) apart from the toast etc, coffee etc which is buffet. No photos of breakfast, as well it's breakfast 😁
Vince O — Google review
We were staying at the Premier Inn next door but didn't find this pub to be the usual standard of supporting role. On the first evening we'd been travelling all day and got to Kilmarnock at 9.05pm to be told that they stopped taking orders at 8.45pm. The buffet breakfast is continental, all cooked items have to be ordered from the kitchen so take a little longer if you're in a rush. The Thai Green Vegetable Curry is vegan and was nice. We purchased it with an offer, however it's usually £11.59 which would be a little expensive for what it is. Lemon and Raspberry Semifreddo is also vegan and delicious. On Thursday we arrived at 7pm to be told they wern't taking "walk-ins" (we went elsewhere). Overall it's a good size pub with parking and a nice atmosphere but we'll go somewhere else more reliable next time.
Sharon W — Google review
I don't like to give a bad review but our dinner here was not a good experience. They were busy but only at the start of the evening. Our starters took over half an hour to come. They were mixed quality. The mains were not delivered much quicker. The pizza was overcooked so the base was a biscuit. The Thai curry was ok as it goes. The desserts were the best event, with the least delay (it was quiet by then). Over 2 hours for the whole shebang. And the smoke alarm over our table needed a new battery. It peeped loudly throughout.
Michael C — Google review
Alistair was our server and he was great fun and super helpful. Sunday Roast was delicious. Do recommend doing the unlimited option for roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding. We both had the gammon. Great value. Their Sunday Roaat is popular so try and book 3pm or before as it was busy.
Ruadhri H — Google review
The most outstanding service from our main server Eilidh and manager Nicola. An unfair last minute arrival booking from us after attending a very emotional funeral. The staff were very welcoming for our big party of people (ranging in ages from 8 years old to 70+ years) and the staff accommodated all of our needs kindly. The service was unmatched- they really went above and beyond. We cannot thank them enough; from the decent prices of the food to the generous hospitality during our visit. We will be back for another lovely experience. Thank you so so much.
Sophie H — Google review
This place is so very disappointing we nipped in for lunch the other day. Possibly under staffed but no excuse the service was atrocious we were left in a corner and other people who had arrived after us served before us it took two hours for two courses the food was ok chips were stone cold complaints at the time nothing done about it not even on the bill won't be returning here sorry if offended anyone but that's the way it was for us
Ian M — Google review
Nice friendly atmosphere great for a family meal. The Staff are really friendly and welcoming I couldn't fault them for anything, an amazing Team of people who put hours of hard work in to satisfy the public. We have had the full breakfast in the morning everything was cooked perfect. In the evening we had the Sunday Roast with everything on the works and for dessert the triple chocolate brownie and chocolate chip cookie s'mors with vanilla ice cream. Everything was amazing perfectly cooked and delicious would definitely be back. 😋

Amazing food, amazing drinks and wonderful staff. Menu is suitably varied and present large portions which is definitely good value for money. Mid-week deals make for even further value, which I'd personally made use of by making my way through the extensive amount of cocktails on offer. Overall, a wonderful experience and highly recommended for anyone looking for that bit more than the rest, but without breaking the bank.
Graham B — Google review
Came here for a special occasion lunch & cocktails. Unfortunately the poor service lets the place down massively. It's nicely decorated and looks modern, initial food order & drinks order were taken quite quickly. Meal was nice, took a while to come out considering there was only 2/3 other tables booked. When the meal was finished we asked for more drinks (our drinks had been empty for some time), again they took a while to come out. After this drink, the service was very poor. We were struggling to even flag anyone down, and we weren't the only ones looking for some service. We sat probably for an hour with no drinks and barely any staff to catch the attention of, we genuinely felt that when we made eye contact from a distance the staff went in another direction. When we finally got a waitress, she came across rude and unprofessional, like we were just a burden for her. Anytime one of our party asked for a particular gin, she was being told "it's not available as it's in the bar at the reception" - why not get the gin from the reception bar then? Didn't seem like a difficult task. She finally managed to get a gin which was available, the bill had the wrong gin charged (the most expensive one funnily enough, even though it was the cheapest one ordered). In the 4.5 hours we were there we only managed to get 3 drinks, which is a real shame as we would have stayed longer if the service was better. We were warned before coming the service was poor, and wish we had listened! Overall disappointing visit and wouldn't go back, which is a shame because the food was nice.

Went to magpies as it was recommended to us. It's an old looking pub/bar from the outside but it's tastefully decorated inside. The staff where friendly and welcoming. Plenty to choose on the menu and as a bounce it was a 2 for 1 monday to Thursday. Food was decent, steak pie was tasty and a good portion 7/10. Fish and chips you could taste the oil it was cooked in needed changed. 6/10. I probably won't go back but for the money it was decent..

John H — Google review
I try and wait to leave reviews, so its fair. Ive been to Maggies a few times over the years. And I have to say, its declined in quality. Went in for a wee "well done meal" after my lassies exam results. Waitresses were quick to have us seated, and drinks & orders taken. I can't fault them. We were 1/2 tables in and eating food. The food took ages to come. The fish wasn't the nicest (mine and my 2 year olds)the kids portions was the same size as the main I ordered, just cut up onto 3 goujons (which is almost a tenners difference) he never touched it. Just the chips, my daughter loved her carbonara and my partners salt and chilli chicken meal was stone cold! Most of the food was. I also ordered the haggis bon bons (starter) they were absolutely rock solid and bland. We left disappointed overall

Had a family get together to celebrate a birthday and decided to try out Maggies Bar and Kitchen in Kilmarnock. What a pleasant place to eat and the choice on the menu was great. Our orders were taken quickly though there was a wee wait for our meals to be served up. This was more than compensated by the quality and presentation of our food. Also in the places favour was that it was dog friendly, so we did not have to leave our four legged friend in the car! Will we be back ? Yes 😊 PS make sure you are hungry as the portions are large.

Very nice place with friendly staff and the food was great. Went for brunch and was great value. No complaints and happy to recommend.

Steaks were great, but had to send back the Lasagne - such a small portion both in height and depth. They didn't seem happy I sent it back, but the replacement portion was perfect .... food on main menu is pricey but the steak night price is great (paid £25 for 2 sirloins which were lovely) ..

New Laigh Kirk is a beautiful church located in the center of Kilmarnock. It serves as a prominent place of worship and hosts live choir performances on Sunday mornings. The church features stunning stained glass windows that depict nativity and Biblical scenes, creating a breathtaking ambiance when sunlight filters through them. Visitors are welcome to attend worship services on Sundays and explore the church during designated open hours throughout the week.
Pretty little Kirk, graveyard, trees, lawn, and especially the inside is well loved. They have events like concerts too. Beautiful blue and white colors very nice.
D'Axel V — Google review
Laigh Kirk's history and development is an integral part of the history and development of Kilmarnock itself. Between the 4th and 6th centuries an Irish missionary Saint called Marnoc, probably a follower of St. Columba, established a Christian settlement here. This then was the first church in Kilmarnock, and following the reformation in 1560, the Laigh was the first and only Church of Scotland in the town. On the Kirk tower the date 1410 is inscribed, and although the entire structure is not that age, relics of a pre-reformation altar from Roman times were revealed in 1803 when the new building was in progress. The present Church building dates from 1802 and the bell from 1853. The first organ installed in 1877 was replaced in the 1920’s

Anne W — Google review
The experience was excellent. They gave us a short tour of the facilities and we met Mr. McCallum himself. It was a great surprise to be treated with such hospitality from such a large pipe maker.
Alex D — Google review
Have been involved in piping for decades. Recently had reason to have some work done on my bagpipes and decided the workshop at McCallum’s was the place I felt was best suited and equipped to do the job and get it right. Made contact and received a very quick reply that was both enthusiastic and with a ‘can do’ attitude. Also received very welcome advice and guidance from Kenny on my thoughts. Dropped off the job and had a good discussion with Robert about my requirements. A few days later every one of my very high standards had been met…and exceeded by Robert. First class craftsmanship and exemplary professionalism, courtesy and customer service from start to finish. I simply could not have wished for a better outcome. The result is better than I could have hoped and precisely how I would’ve wanted them ‘in an ideal world’. Sincere thanks to Robert, Kenny and Stuart.

Purchased a set of bagpipes just before lockdown and I can hand downs say this was the best customer service I've ever experienced. Staff walked myself and my dad around the factory and explained exactly how the pipes are made, and were friendly and welcoming from start to finish. Cannot recommend this place enough.

Excellent service this morning. Brought in my 2002 McCallum pipes to get the metal sliders polished up as they were looking a bit scabby. They did it there and then while I waited and even provided a cup of tea. The guy working in the shop also sorted me out with a new bag cover and some new chords and fitted them for me - to save me the hassle. Fab.

Pricey for what it is. Get better value elsewhere. Card reader wouldn't accept mobile payment. Had to go get cash before kids could get in.
Peter H — Google review
I was hear last week with my kids I have been alot but recently it seems very dirty and grubby everything you touch has that dirty feeling I understand it's a kids place but you can't even slide down slides for dirty stickiness and not only that my kids later became very sick with fever and shits .again kids places are breading grounds but paying to go into a hot sticky dirty pit was a waste of money and I'm still nursing kids bk to health so unless It gets a deep clean I'm afraid i won't be back which is ashame as it's not far from me and good to get kids out.
ALEXIS T — Google review
Barely staffed, there's a ball area with large balls that looks like a fight will break out, it's a breeding ground for bullying, the netting around the play areas are covered in signs so the children can't be readily watched, not impressed, we won't be bringing the kids back here.

Members and staff are welcoming, ensuring visitors feel right at home from the moment they arrive. While there are no buggies available, this only adds to the charm as the course is easily walkable and not overly lengthy.
A good afternoon's golf. The course is in fantastic condition, the greens are true, the fairways lush, and the members were helpful and nice. The starter was helpful and could not do enough for us. There are no buggies, but do not view this as a bad thing as the course is a fairly easy walk and not too long. All in all, this course is an absolute gem and so worth the £25 each that we paid. It is exactly what a community golf course should be. Thank you for the welcome and the round. We will be back.

The course is getting better with every season. The greens are in excellent condition and have been for some time now. Caprington is comparable with all the parkland courses in the West of Scotland I have played this year, most of which charge far higher fees. The Edward VII Memorial, a Victorian water fountain, was erected by James Craig to honor the coronation of King Edward VII. The memorial is adorned with intricate designs and lions on its copper foundation. Although it no longer spouts water as it did in 1902, it remains a beautiful sight within one of Kilmarnock's picturesque parks. The original Burns Monument is also located nearby, enclosed within an archive building that surrounds the Robert Burns statue.

Excellent weeks stay at the castle for a friend's 60th birthday. Beautiful accommodation and well equipped kitchen. I stayed in the Queen Mary room with the 4 poster bed that was very comfortable. Great location, great food and great service. Had a couple of very nicely made coffees with a delicious breakfast overlooking the loch, where a swan took off and did a fly-by for us, while we watched some fishermen try their luck with fly fishing in the loch. The restaurant prices were good (great considering the location) and the service was excellent. It'd be a fantastic place for a wedding or function. We then did a really nice walk through some of the extensive & beautiful grounds and past the castle. I'd love to come back with my kids and tackle the tree-tops adventure, which looks at least as good as the one that I've done in Bali, Sydney and Adelaide.
