Salinas de Fuencaliente is a salt-extraction complex located in the southern part of La Palma. It has been designated as an Official Site of Scientific Interest due to its diverse bird species. Visitors can take self-guided tours to witness the salt harvesting process and learn about salt production while strolling through the fields. The site also features a gift shop and a well-regarded restaurant, El Jardin de la Sal, offering picturesque views of the coast.
This is such an interesting stop on the southern tip of La Palma. Seeing and learning about the entire process of extracting pure salt from seawater is fascinating, as is discovering the difference types of sea salt. The walk through the salt pans is all volcanic gravel but is an easy stroll (although I would suggest fully closed shoes as the rock can be very sharp). Every time we have been there, it has been quite windy, so I would recommend a windbreaker or at least long sleeve shirt even on nice days. We have been here several times and plan to stop by the next time we're on that end of the island.

Nice place. You can walk through the Salinas with also amazing volcanic lanscape behind it. We bought some salt in the gift shop and had some traditional dips with bread at the restaurant which were really great!

Very peculiar place. A must see when visiting La Palma! Good to combine with a visit to the nearby volcanos
Helmer K — Google review
A Must-Visit Gem on La Palma. I recently visited Salinas de Fuencaliente on La Palma, and it's truly one of the island's hidden gems. Observing the traditional salt extraction processes was not only interesting but also quite enlightening. The entire area, beautifully constructed with lava stone, adds a unique touch that amplifies the charm of this place. There's also a fantastic restaurant on-site with delightful service, making it a perfect spot to relax after a tour. I highly recommend making a stop here if you're on the island. It's absolutely worth the visit!
Peter L — Google review
Apparently there are an enormous amount of dissolved micro-plastics in sea salt these days. Sad if true. The pools are beautiful.
Nathan J — Google review
Interesting place to visit. It's free parking and free to enter. Buses are infrequent. There are information boards along the self-guided walk explaining what goes on in the different sections. The Cafe/Restaurant is only open from 11am and from Thursday to Sunday. Also, the only toilets outside of the opening times are at the lighthouse at a cost of €2.00 to enter the information centre. There is a small shop on site selling souvenirs and cold drinks.
Terry H — Google review
Lovely place , little walk with information boards. Really enjoyed it. Restaurant , bar and information centre with shop were great too. We bought some of the salt there. Lighthouse was being painted on our visit. Would recommend as a little local trip.cheap public bus goes every 2 hours.
Marianna G — Google review
Good place near the lighthouse. If you go by the guided road then you will understand the whole procedure of producing the salt from the sea water. All this place is surrounded by 2 year old lava from the last eruption..

(Translated by Google) Phenomenal views of the volcano. You have to park your car at the entrance, which is generally not crowded. After more or less 15 or 20 minutes you arrive at the viewpoint where you are next to the volcano crater itself. The track is very easy and passable to walk. It can be done with children without any problem. You can see along the track the vine plantations that are usually malvasia that contrast with the black sand landscape.

Volcanoes
The Centro de Visitantes Volcán San Antonio offers a variety of hiking trails that lead up the volcano, providing stunning views of crater landscapes and clear skies for stargazing. One trail takes you through land formed by volcanic eruptions in 1971, passing cones, craters, and unique rock formations before reaching the southernmost tip of the island with its working salt pans and migratory bird stopovers.
Well worth the visit. Plenty of information about volcanoes in general and specifically the ones on La Palma. The seismograph with real time trace is good fun as you can see the trace change as you walk or jump near it. The earthquake simulator plate outside is thought provoking. Yes, I can stand on it but how far could I walk or run if the earth was shaking like that? There's a nice, though potentially challenging walk around the crater rim giving great views into the crater and out to sea. Easy to get to by car (ample parking available) or by using the number 23 bus. The current entry fee of €8 is fair especially if you take the time to look at the exhibits and appreciate the information in them.
Andy P — Google review
Great visitor centre with lots of well prepared information on the volcanoes of La Palma and some good documentation of the most recent outbreak. The walk around the crater is easy and impressive with great views. The facilities are in good quality too, so the 5€ entry fee is justified, especially if you think that there are so many well maintained paths , parking facilities and outlook points on the whole island for which you don‘t have to pay - so a small fee such as here is absolutely fine.
Diane C — Google review
I highly recommend to visit this place. If you want to make your life easier, just cone bu car, pay entrance fee 8Euro (07/2025) per person and enjoy it. Visotors center contains articles, pgotos and videos about La Palma vulcanic origin, about the geological history and so on... Thrn go for 20-30 mins light tour toward calcerof Vulcan, great view, worth to come and see. Be prepared for some lught rain due to foggy/cloudy weather sometimes and temperature even in July around 19 deg. - depends.
Erik — Google review
Short walk out and back around half the volcano crater. Quite windy at the time, so be careful. Lots of very interesting information on the visitor centre.
Neil J — Google review
Nice museum, you can walk to the vulcano and have a nice view. An easy 25 minuten walk. Unfortunately, the openinghours arenot correct. We arrived at 16.50 as the museum would be open unril 18.30. The museum was open until 17.30. A lot of tourist arrived too late to be allowed in. Great museum, check the openingtimes
Tessa B — Google review
The price for the entrance, 8 euro per person is way too high for what you get in exchange... Othen than that, nice views from the little walk and in the center you get information about how the the island was created due to volcanic activity...
Stephan B — Google review
Really interesting museum that explains a lot of the volcano activity in the Canary Islands. Some of the posters are a bit dated, but the information was great!
Agathe C — Google review
If you are visiting La Palma, this place has to be on your list. Fantastic experience, full of so much information, Everything is in 3 languages Spanish German English So even if Spanish is not your first language, you will still get a lot out of your visit. And the walk on the volcano, is for everyone, and the view point is great. We recommend this place to everyone

Fuencaliente, also known as Fuencaliente de La Palma, is a charming municipality located in the southern part of La Palma island in the Canary Islands, Spain. The village Los Canarios has been its seat since 1837. This small coastal town is a haven for geology enthusiasts due to its significance in volcanic studies. The term "caldera" was actually coined here to describe the hollow ground resulting from volcanic collapse.

Llanovid S. C. L. Bodegas Teneguía is a laid-back winery offering a wonderful wine tasting experience with a stunning outdoor setting overlooking vineyards and a volcano chimney. The 22-year-old "La Time" white wine is particularly impressive, and the reds as well as the aged sweet wine are also worth trying. The friendly staff, including Diego, provide guided tastings and warm welcomes, making it an excellent place for wine enthusiasts to visit.
Excellent wine, their dry white wine is very smooth and has unique taste. They have tours around the winery, but u unfortunately, at the time we were there, no one was available to show us the winery. If you're interested in a tour them make sure to let them no in advance.
Michael D — Google review
An excellent wine tasting experience! Nicolas was extremely knowledgeable and passionate, making the session both engaging and educational. I learned a lot about La Palma wine! A truly enjoyable and enriching experience—highly recommended!
Aleksandra M — Google review
We turned up without a reservation, but the young woman who greeted us took it in her stride. She started by apologising for her English and saying that the usual guide wasn't available - this wasn't necessary because we thought she did a great job! It was really interesting to learn about the history of the cooperative and their production methods, to see the wonderful view down to the vineyards and to visit the cellar under the volcano. We particularly enjoyed tasting the dry and semi-dry whites and took a nice bottle home with us.
Tom W — Google review
This is a very laid back place for a wine tasting. We walked in and waited about 5 minutes before someone came up. Which really didn't matter to us as it was worth the wait. We tasted 4 wines, all of which were very well priced. Every wine is less than 2 euros a glass. We ended up taking 3 bottles home.
Erick H — Google review
Really cool wine, I tasted a wonderful 22 years old bottle of white wine from the coast called "La Time" during a winery tasting and bought a bottle. If the weather is nice they do the testing outside overlooking one of their vineyards and a volcano chimney! The also have nice reds, and a cool very aged sweet wine.

Nice winery with kind owner, good wines for tasting, fully recommended for visiting, Malvasia was excellent and surprisingly dry, also the singularis wines tasted great, bought some 🍷for tasting them home

So the town mayor randomly arrived on our visit. We were already half way through a wine tasting and Diego continued to happily attend to us, what a total gentleman. Explanations, guided tasting and overall warm welcome made for the best wine experience of my life. Wine was also totally banging!

Beach
Playa de Echentive is a striking gray sandy beach located in the south of La Palma, created by the dramatic eruption of the Teneguia volcano in 1971. This new addition to the island's coastline boasts black volcanic sand, sparkling waters, natural pools, and hot springs for visitors to enjoy. Despite its wild and unspoiled nature, it is surprisingly accessible from a nearby road.
Wide black sand and mostly stony beach. One has to pay attention to the flag otherwise it might get risky depending on current/tide. With fins and wetsuit it might be doable but better be careful when trying to swim out. The cliffs to the left are shaped obviously by the flow of the lava many moons ago but can also depending on tide provide some shade. The walk stairs down to the shoreline might take a minute but is rather mild. I enjoyed my several visits here.
Thomas T — Google review
Awesome place. Black sand, lava, rocks, natural pools. Make sure to bring some footwear to wear for swimming. We sat and watched huge waves crash on the cliffs but at the same time could go for a swim in the natural pool and sunbath on the rocks shielded from the wind.
Gosia M — Google review
Very beatiful beach. to get to the beach there is a nice stair with steps made from volcanic rocks. most of beach is medium sized pebbles but at the shore there is fine black sand.
TheDingetje123 — Google review
I find this place fascinating and I'm very happy we visited it. The beach in the very raw surroundings shaped by volcanic activity of 1971. Makes you realize the power of nature. There are a few salty pools there. The beach itself is a mix of rocks and sand, not a pleasant experience to go barefoot. Not crowded. Easily accessible, there is some space to park your car by the road, may be full if you're unlucky.
Paweł M — Google review
This beach is very big and beautiful. On the beach is also a thermal lake. It is accesible by bus line 23 that goes from Los Canarios to Faro. From the bus stop there are built stairs down to the beach
Nina S — Google review
Beach with rocks and peables, couple of places for parking..black sands..ocean a little upset during our visit with medium waves..
Stephan B — Google review
Beautiful, rugged and quiet. A must. Check out the lake formed. Flip flops necessary for the beach.
Fraus L — Google review
Stony beach which is not over crowded. On the day of our visit the ocean was to stormy and the waves where crashing on the beach. We got soaked by a sudden big wave. There where some “Portuguese man o' war” jellyfish lieing on the beach so look out four your kids.

Playa y Bajas de la Zamora is a popular spot for surfers, divided into two sections: Zamora Grande and Zamora Chica. The Playa del Faro sits beneath two lighthouses, old and new. Meanwhile, the Playa de Punta Larga is nestled between black rock formations and buildings, with banana plantations in the background.
It is the second beach section of playa de la Zamora. It is a bit steeper to get down but managable. The current during winter time is strong so absolutely pay attention to the flag. If red do not swim. The views imho are great and when the tide is calmer you can experience some great snorkeling/swimming. Great beach to spend a day.
Thomas T — Google review
A bit to wild! I was traveling with 2 childrens and one of them is with special needs so it was a bit hard to get down to the beach because of the stairs. If you are using a wheelchair I think is not suitable !
Aurelia C — Google review
Beautiful beach - you have 2 options one beach closer to the parking lot - just take the stairs down. Or second option go a little bit further on the main road and then you have a steep downhill on the left which will bring you to a lot of stairs leading to another beach. Black sand and rocks await there. We came by bus number 23 - the bus stop we got off was Cruce La Zamora. From there is was aprox. 15min walk It took us longer just because we where observing all the banana fields. The road was nice. There is no way to get lost.
Nina S — Google review
Great little black sand beach accessed by a set of steep stone steps with a helpful seating point for changing in/out of sandy footwear half way down. Beautiful setting. Cafe available and toilets (when cafe is open).
Will H — Google review
Breathtaking black sand beach. New wooden stair access. I loved the experience. I'll come back.
Carlos G — Google review
The steps to the smaller beach are not that steep and only take a minute or two to descend. The beach has very fine, black volcanic sand which gets everywhere. It's not a problem unless like the day we went and the beach shower wasn't working. The waves hitting the beach, although only small, were very strong. I am a strong swimmer and wouldn't attempt swimming in the sea on that day. You would be better off going to the beach at Punta Larga, in my opinion.
Terry H — Google review
We walked here from the La Palma and Teneguia Princess Hotel through the banana plantations. A 40 minutes road walk up and down some steep slopes but truly worth it to get here. The black sand beach is protected by the cliffs and a number of large rocks in the sea. The waves are quite dramatic and therefore you should not swim unless you are very confident to do so. There is car parking and a small cafe/restaurant (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) at the top of the cliff.
James B — Google review

This place was very good pre volcanic eruption. Unfortunately for now its a ghost town because the roads have only just opened recently. I'm sure in the near future it will get back to it's busy self when shops and restaurants/cafes all reopen. Amazing view here. Also the food was very good. We had lunch here with three dishes, I can for sure recommend this restaurant. The croquettes are a must have. It was unexpected that the food was so good as it is the only restaurant in the region. The shop also offers nice souvenirs and a place to buy salt.
Pim E — Google review
I ordered the mango soup, the catch of the day, and the ice cream dessert with meringue. The mango soup was excellent, I didn’t expect such flavors – full, bold, and light. The shrimp in it were the best shrimp I’ve ever had in my life – delicate, simply perfect. The fresh fish was also the best fish I’ve ever eaten, and with the addition of garlic butter and pesto, it was a true explosion of flavor. The side dishes of grilled vegetables and potatoes were very good, though nothing extraordinary. The dessert was good but definitely made the least “wow” impression of all the dishes.
A F — Google review
Amazing views. Nice place for a cup of coffee. The cake was not what we expected, however, menu looks very good. PS: tried the food - it’s good :)

Great experience at the restaurant by the salt fields. The fish was extremely fresh and well prepared. We had a lovely wine suggestion by the waiter to accompany the fish. The view on the salt fields is very fun, and the restaurant uses the salt crystals in their dishes as well. I recommend
Agathe C — Google review
Super good goods, super good prices, the wine list was super, the service level was super, the setting was excellent. And the greatest thing was that they have tables in terrace overlook the salt pens and the sea and it's dogs friendly. Super
Meitsao R — Google review
Delicious food. Service was a little slow, but the restaurant was completely full so it's understandable. We had the paella which was very fresh and really tasty. We didn't really like the bread and sauce we were served as an entrée, especially because the waitress asked us if we wanted bread and we said no, yet we still got it (and had to pay for it). The view of the ocean and the salt harvesting is nice.
Mr. K — Google review
Beautiful location, friendly, attentive and knowledgeable staff, delicious food, decent size portions. My only complaint is there was too much of too overwhelming and not balanced (a bit too salty and acidic) sauce in the Saltado with noodles. My wife liked it so maybe it's a matter of taste? It was offset by bread served toasted on the outside, warm and soft on the inside, goes perfectly with their seasoned butter.

The area boasts attractions like the salt-extraction complex and the Teneguia volcano emerging from the lunar-like landscape.
Loved the spot. Two gorgeous lighthouses next to each other, easy to park, tiny fishing "village" just below, with a small beach. Easy walk to the salt flats.

This is an interesting place to visit, mainly for the salt pans that are next to the lighthouses. There is a cafe and restaurant that serve drinks and snacks. The salt pans have a self guided tour that you can walk around for free.
Sue B — Google review
This place is truly captivating. I explored not only the salines but also the cliffs/coastline. The memorial platform and the museum round off one of the island‘s must visit locations.
Thomas T — Google review
Nice to see the old and new lighthouses side by side overlooking the atlantic ocean with the mountains behind. At the old lighthouse is a short film about the conservation area of the coast and its importance to the sea creatures and working with the fishing villages. You have to stand to view film as only a couple of lava ledges and no seats. 2 euro entry 1 for seniors. The room is all subdued and very relaxing with lava wall and stone sea creatures. The floor is unusual in that it is lit up, under coloured glass laid over debris/rubbish at the bottom of the ocean that causes damage to sea life. You can also stand under the stairs of the old lighthouse for an upward view. Worth a visit if conservation interests you as very interesting about the species that are doing well. They have toilets. Plenty of parking around the base of lighthouses. Restaurant/cafe, salt pans and beach nearby. The road down is long and windy and passes the banana plantations. Lovely rugged coastal views.

We visited the lighthouse while staying at the nearby Princess hotel; the bus operates regularly, taking 15 minutes to get one way. I recommend visiting the lighthouse as there's a visitor centre with salt flats, marine conservation space and a cute local beach. If you want to see more, it's worth hiring a car to explore the island!
Harry H — Google review
Nice view and inside the old building there is a small exhibition about the island on a video. Nice for a small trip around the south side of the island. Close by there is also a salt farm you can visit.
Tim T — Google review
Old and new lighthouses at the south of the island surrounded by a volcanic landscape. A 6k walk or €1.50 on the bus from the Princess hotel. Small beach with black sand. Salt pans nearby with a cafe/restaurant offering food and drinks at sensible prices. Worth a visit for an hour or two.
James B — Google review
Nice lady on the entrance explained we couldn't go to the top of the old lighthouse. As it's the only place that has a toilet (cafe/restaurant was closed), we paid €2.00 each to see a video about the marine reserve, and that's all you get. There are no chairs to sit on while watching the video. It's not worth the money unless you are desperate to use the toilet.

Cumbre Vieja is a volcanic ridge located in Cumbre Vieja National Park, offering various outdoor activities such as hiking and biking. The ridge is part of La Palma, one of the smallest islands in the Canaries but with impressive mountain ranges. With its underlying volcano and numerous craters, it's considered one of the most mountainous islands on earth.
Visited early October 2021. Eruption continues. One of the most exciting experiences of my life. Currently, conditions remain safe as the police keep people at a safe distance.

An otherwordly place. Hills covered in volcanic ash, scattered pine trees. Near the eruption site trees are yellow because of volcanic gases and acid rains. The newly formed volcano still emit gases.

The Cumbre Vieja ( meaning "Old Peak") is an active volcanic ridge on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain. The spine of Cumbre Vieja trends in an approximate north–south direction, comprising the southern half of La Palma, with both summit ridge and flanks pockmarked by dozens of craters and cones. The latest eruption began on 19 September 2021 in a forested area of Las Manchas locality known as Cabeza de Vaca. Voluminous lava flows quickly reached populated areas downslope, fanning out across settlements and banana plantations, destroying thousands of buildings, and ultimately pouring over steep cliffs into the ocean at several locations to enlarge the island. The volcano went quiet on 13 December 2021, and on 25 December 2021, the local government declared the eruption to be over.

It's considered one of the most beautiful beaches in La Palma, featuring good amenities such as a kiosk, showers, bathroom facilities, and a walking path.
Very nice black sand beach with some great to climb cliffs as well. It has a pretty clean restroom/shower hut and one has quite a few parking spaces on either side South/North. The wood planks make walking onto the beach a breeze. I liked it a lot.

Very nice volcanic black sand beach. We didn't swim but we came here for a little while to enjoy the beach and watch the waves. The sea was calm when we visited and there were people swimming. We saw some birds and lizards too.

It's a nice natural beach and I think during the main season it's even greater since neither the toilets were open nor the bar. And the wooden plates for accessibility were also not in place. The view is gigantic and can swim, sunbath whatever you like.

Cueva de Las Palomas is a must-visit attraction in La Palma for cave exploration. The two-hour tour takes you through lava fields and into a volcanic cave with an expert guide who provides insights into the area's geology. Visitors are equipped with helmets at the visitor center before embarking on this educational and fascinating journey. It's suitable for families and those interested in learning about lava caves without undertaking extensive hikes.
Caves are safe again as of early/mid this year, closed due to gasses from the 2021 eruption nearby. Informative walk on top and through the lava tunnels if you book a guide.

Nice informative walk through lava fields and inside a lava tube, our guide shared a lot of information about the eruptions on the island and the formation of the lava fields and the tubes, she also took plenty of time to answer any questions you might have. We just drove up, parked on the side of the road and decided right there to join the tour, we paid 12 Euro per person, which is a decent price for such a tour.

Puntalarga Beach, a popular tourist destination, is known for its rocky terrain and pebbly shore. Its unique geological features make it an intriguing attraction for nature enthusiasts. This captivating destination draws crowds year-round due to its fascinating charm and natural allure.
One of the most beautiful beaches of this lovely island. Small beach with a natural pool where it is possible to swim when the waves are very high. Amazing sunsets view from this beach. They're two kiosks with delicious seafood and good prices.

El Aljibe is a unique coastal spot that features saltwater pools formed by the ocean water filtering through the sand dunes. Despite its name, it's not a traditional aljibe with sweet water, but rather offers crystal-clear and warmer saltwater pools that are perfect for swimming. Accessible from Playa Echentive/Playa Nueva via an unmarked footpath, this hidden gem provides a tranquil alternative to the sometimes stormy ocean waves.
Accessible from the beach by a small unmarked footpath. Watch your steps- the rocks are sharp.
Karl S — Google review
These salt water pools are crystal clear and warmer than the ocean. There are several pools. The one further in the back is my favorite. You can go there if the sea is to stormy or the waves are to high. Make sure to wear flip flops because the stones are sharp and really unpleasant to walk on with bare feet.
Jonas F — Google review
So, let's start with what this place is not. Strictly speaking, this is not aljibe, as aljibe is supposed to be a well with sweet water, when here the water is salty, because it's the ocean water, "filtered" through the sand dune. This is not a thermal spring. The water is warmer because it mixes with the ocean water much slower. The place is located not where the road sign "El Aljibe" is placed. Use "Playa Echentive/Playa Nueva" instead. There are 3 fishes living in the big pool. If you look closely, you might notice sea anemonies (4-5 cm in size). If you want to swim there, wearing protective swimming shoes is highly recommended, as the lava around is very sharp. The water goes up&down together with the ocean. You might want to check the tides schedule.

Situated in the southern part of the island, this seaside destination offers a prime location to bask in sunlight on its ebony shoreline. Surrounded by awe-inspiring cliffs and complemented by two beacons, this distinctive spot is enhanced further.
El Faro, located in Fuencaliente de La Palma, is a captivating area that showcases the natural beauty and cultural richness of this unique Canary Island. This region, situated on the southern tip of La Palma, is a picturesque blend of stunning landscapes and historical significance. The main attraction of El Faro is the iconic lighthouse, known as Faro de Fuencaliente. This historic beacon, perched on the rugged cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, not only serves as a maritime signal but also offers breathtaking panoramic views. Visitors can explore the lighthouse, learn about its history, and enjoy the unspoiled beauty of the coastline. El Faro is also home to the Teneguía Volcanoes, which erupted in the early 1970s, leaving a trail of mesmerizing lava fields and craters. Hiking enthusiasts can embark on scenic trails that wind through this volcanic landscape, experiencing the island's geological wonders up close. The region is known for its vineyards, producing the unique Malvasía wine, and visitors can taste this local specialty at the Bodegas Teneguía. The combination of volcanic soil and oceanic climate gives the wine a distinctive flavor that's worth savoring. In summary, El Faro in Fuencaliente de La Palma is a captivating destination that seamlessly combines natural beauty, historical significance, and the unique culture of the Canary Islands. It's a place where travelers can immerse themselves in the island's diverse offerings, from dramatic landscapes to delicious wines.

Saying this was an afterthought would be giving it too much praise. It's a forced to be there beach. There's nothing to it but the fact that the lighthouse exists, so there has to be a tourist trap nearby, and if there's a beach bar, it has to have a beach. A very rough blend of rocks and sandy patch that never quite work neither as a pebble, natural beach, nor as a sandy, artificial beach. Plus, the favelas are a sore sight to the eyes. Don't go there for more than one or two cannonballs from the waterfront. Awful beach
Don B — Google review
Okay beach. Lots of pebbles and stones, but there are some sandy areas as well. Kiosko at the beach front. Quiet atmosphere. The drive to the beach is interesting as well: through the black volcano landscape. Not sure what all the fuss is about; there are many other beaches on La Palma that sre better than this one. The salt fields next door are not really that interesting.
