The Amasya Archeology Museum in Turkey houses a remarkable collection of artifacts from various historical periods, including the Bronze Age, Hittite, Pontic, and Roman eras. Notable exhibits include the famous Statuette of Amasya depicting the Hittite storm god Teshub and a collection of mummies dating back to the 14th-century Ilkhan period.
The Amasya Archaeological Museum is an absolute gem that offers a captivating journey through Turkey’s rich history. Nestled in the picturesque city of Amasya, this museum is not only an architectural marvel but also a treasure trove of artifacts spanning thousands of years. The exhibits are meticulously curated, showcasing an impressive collection of relics from the Hittite, Phrygian, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods. The displays are well-organized, with clear descriptions in multiple languages, making it accessible and educational for both local and international visitors. Among the standout pieces are the ancient coins, intricate jewelry, and beautifully preserved sarcophagi that give a glimpse into the lives of those who lived in this region long ago. One of the most remarkable highlights is the mummified remains from the Seljuk period, which are both fascinating and haunting, providing a rare look at ancient burial practices. The museum also houses a beautiful garden with archaeological remnants, creating a serene and immersive atmosphere. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to answer questions or provide additional insights about the exhibits. The museum’s layout is thoughtfully designed, making it easy to navigate without feeling overwhelmed. The entrance fee is modest, making it an affordable cultural experience for all. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an archaeologist at heart, or simply someone looking to explore Amasya’s heritage, this museum is a must-visit. It’s a place where history comes alive and leaves you with a deeper appreciation for Turkey’s extraordinary past.

Archaeology and Mummy Museum – Fascinating and Surprising This museum was one of the highlights of my trip. You can see real mummies and many interesting archaeological items. It’s very well displayed and organized. The information is easy to read and the objects are fascinating. It’s perfect for both adults and kids. The ticket 3€ (145TL) and it’s free for children. The staff are very knowledgeable and polite. They answer all your questions with a smile. If you like history and something a bit different, this museum is a must-see!

In Amasya? Then spend an hour visiting this museum. With information boards in English and Turkish, you will learn all about the city over the years. There are some really good displays, and I especially liked the mosaics and learning about the Storm God! Free with museum cards, parking limited.

The interesting thing is the mummifi3d bodies of 13-14th century bodies in the first floor area. Unique style of museum ti visit if you are in Amasya

There are a lot of nice things to see, both archeological and anthropological, but some of the English translations are terrible or missing. They are making a new museum so hopefully they'll fix the problems. Don't miss the mum's upstairs. Unfortunately there is no way for a handicap person to access the upstairs.

Brilliant and valuable pieces of artifacts, dating back to centuries, millennia and even fossils from 115 million years in a very plain presentation. A must see place. Well done to the curators.

Hazeranlar Mansion, also known as Hazeranlar Konagi, is a beautifully restored Ottoman mansion located in the heart of Amasya. Built in 1865 by Hasan Talat Efendi for his sister Hazeran Hanim, this two-story mansion features period furnishings and serves as an ethnographic museum. It offers a fascinating insight into the lifestyle of a wealthy family during the Ottoman era.
Very nice museum that shows life in ottoman time. Near every room you can find board with explanations of use of this room according local tradition. It's like travel in time)))

Average experience. Foreigner's entry fee is €3 (210TRY) in cash despite the sign 60TRY... Very unpleasant. I would not go there anymore for so little exposition. It's just a house, nice architecture, but little things to learn inside.

The Pontic Kings Rock Tombs in Amasya are an ancient marvel perched atop a mountain, offering breathtaking views of the city. These historical structures date back to the Pontus Kingdom period and were carved into rocks, reflecting Hellenistic architectural features. Although only a few of the 21 tombs have survived, they remain a symbolic and popular tourist attraction in Amasya. Visiting these tombs involves a rewarding adventure with stunning panoramic views of the surroundings.
Came here in September with a tour group. Only a short climb up the stairs to the entrance. There is a small entry fee, 25TL. There is not much to see of the tombs. But that the tombs are carved into the hillside is historic. Also a great view of the city from up there
Google L — Google review
We walked up to the tombs. Its a lot of money for a badly taken care of path. There are people working on buildings, but around the tombs is a lot of dirt, thrash… The view is gorgeous though!

King Rock Tombs – Impressive and Majestic The King Rock Tombs are very impressive and full of history. They are carved into the mountain and offer a fantastic view of the whole city. You have to walk a little uphill, but it’s not too hard and it’s really worth it. The tombs are big and mysterious, and you can take great pictures there. The ticket price is 100TL, and children can go in for free. The people at the entrance are very friendly and give you useful information. It’s one of the most important places to visit in Amasya. I really loved it.
Gihan R — Google review
An acient and well preserved crypts that are carved into rocks of mountain. A must see place for Amasya. You may also fancy the traditional wooden houses and a peaceful evening near greenriver (Yeşilırmak). This place is also the homeland of an old fable called "Ferhat and Şirin". The lover Ferhat singlehandedly carve through mountains to bring water to city and get Şirin's hand for marriage...
A B — Google review
We had issue with the ticket person who has been working there because university students cannot benefit from student discounts. Ticket person showed us “entering rules” of the Amasya municipality's and these rules are not allowing over 18 years old. After that, they took the normal entering fee from us.
Tulga Ö — Google review
Very attractive for those who are interested in history and mysterious sites. It is a historical tombs of pontic kings which are now available for visitors. The only way to reach them is by walking a long strairs which definitely needs to be immensely fit. The beautiful view of the city of Amasya from up will let you forget the long stairs journey.
N A — Google review
A nice monument, it's clean, very very good organised to bad that the original was destroyed by the Roman empire more than 2000 years ago. Very nice view of the city.
Εμμανουήλ Ζ — Google review
You'll see these tombs from wherever you are on Amasya. So why not pay the 15TL per person (Apr 23) and then climb the 600 or so steps to go and see them? You'll get very close and be able to see how they were carved, but you won't be able to go in or walk around the back. There are some good views from the top and the information boards are mostly in Turkish and English.

This is a very calm and spiritual place. It’s a traditional Islamic school, and the building has beautiful architecture with arches and a peaceful courtyard. It’s not crowded, so you can enjoy the quiet atmosphere and take your time. There are also small exhibits inside. The entrance fee is very low, and it’s free for children. Very interesting to view how ancient doctors heal patients. Some of the tools look atrocious and some are like torture tools used to interrogate criminals. Burmali Minare Mosque, located in Amasya, is a historical and magnificent structure that dates back to 1414. The mosque features elegant marble craftsmanship in its narthex and showcases precious artifacts of Ottoman woodworking in its main door and window wings. Adjacent to a large car park, the mosque also includes an octagonal tomb from the Seljuk period. Despite undergoing renovations due to past damage, it remains a wonderful example of Burmese style architecture from the Ottoman era.
The mosque, named after its graceful spiral minaret, was first built by the Seljuks in the 13th century and has been restored several times. The Pontic tombs carved in the rock face across the river and the mountaintop castle ruins form a picturesque backdrop.

The Saraydüzü Barracks Building National Struggle Museum and Congress Center is a historical site located in the heart of Amasya. The museum showcases wax sculptures and tells the story of the significance of Amasya during the national struggle period.

This place is a historical building with a museum inside. It talks about Turkish history and the War of Independence. There are nice exhibitions with objects, pictures, and stories. It’s very educational and interesting. The museum is clean, modern, and not very crowded. Entrance is free. The people at the front desk are very kind and speak slowly if your Turkish is not perfect. They are happy to explain things. I learned a lot and really enjoyed it. A great visit!

(Translated by Google) Beautiful from outside but only white stucco visible from inside Located in Hatuniye District, right on the banks of Yeşilırmak, the mosque was built by Sultan II. It was built in 1510 by Bülbül Hatun, wife of Bayezid and mother of Prince Ahmet. It is essentially a social complex consisting of a mosque, bathhouse and infant school. The mosque is entered through the low arched door in the north. The northern façade is closed with a five-room narthex formed by six columns connected to each other by pointed brick arches. The walls of this section are higher than the walls of the main worship space. The tops of the arches are decorated with the Meander motif, covering the entire facade. The narthex is covered with five small domes. Of the domes, only the one in the middle was placed on an octagonal pulley, the others were used without a pulley. The walls of the rectangular planned mosque are made of rubble stone. The interior space was divided into six sections by connecting the two piers in the middle part of the worship space to the walls. The two sections in the middle, which are wider and higher than the sections on the sides, are covered with two domes. In the north-western corner of the mosque, there is a brick-lined minaret with a single balcony. Sübyan School is located just east of the mosque. The pointed-arched, stone-framed entrance is on Hazeranlar Street, where the entrance of the mosque is also located. The walls, built of rubble stone, have brickwork in three rows transversely. There are three windows with pointed arches on the façade where the entrance is located. Geometric decorations were created by arranging bricks in different shapes on the upper parts of the arches. On the west facade, there is a low arched door opening into the interior and two windows near the top of the wall. The interior of the single-storey building was built as a single, large room. In the original version of the building, the roof was covered with a double dome. However, later the domes were demolished and the top of the building was covered with a wooden roof. Floor and ceiling tiles are made of wood. (Original) Dışarıdan güzel ama içeriden sadece beyaz sıva görünüyor Hatuniye Mahallesi’nde, Yeşilırmak’ın hemen kıyısında yer alan cami Sultan II. Accessible by car, this ancient fortress is a must-visit in Amasya, known as the 'City of Princes.' While exploring this charming city, visitors can also marvel at well-preserved Ottoman-era houses and ancient rock tombs.

Amasya Castle – A Beautiful View of the city from the Top The castle is on top of the city and offers an amazing panoramic view. You can see the river, the houses, and the mountains all around. The castle ruins are interesting and it’s a good place to walk and enjoy nature. It’s also a great spot for taking photos. The ticket is cheap for adults (100TL) and free for children. The staff are really polite and happy to guide you or answer questions. I think this is a perfect place for families and tourists who enjoy history and beautiful landscapes. Don’t miss it!

One of the best places to see 360 degrees of the city from above. The entrance fee is 25 lira per person. It is not difficult to reach and it is a good place to relax.

Well it is a historical site but dont forget you dont see much. It is writtem that there was a hammam here long ago, you cannot see any sight or picture. But the view from the top is fantastic. And the entry fee is 50TL per person.

There’s nothing inside — it’s not a museum, just some ancient stones left. The entrance fee is 100 TL, and it’s not worth going in. If you’re just looking for a good view of the city, I think seeing it from the outside is more than enough.

Known as the "City of Princes," Amasya offers a glimpse into the past with its well-preserved Ottoman-era houses, ancient rock tombs, and historical sites such as the majestic Amasya Castle. The city's unique location along the banks of the Yeşilırmak River adds to its allure, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and lush greenery. Amasya's warm and welcoming atmosphere, coupled with its delicious local cuisine and hospitable residents, creates an unforgettable experience for travelers. Yamaç Bistro is a modern and innovative establishment in Amasya that has quickly gained popularity among locals and visitors. This venue offers panoramic views of the city of princes, Amasya, and serves a variety of flavors from Turkish and world cuisine. In addition to its diverse culinary offerings, Yamaç Bistro also features live music and attentive staff, ensuring a high-quality experience for guests.
Hands down one of the best café-restaurants in Amasya. From the location to the atmosphere, the quality of the building, the landscape architecture, and the soft jazz playing in the background—everything comes together beautifully. The staff could be a bit more professional at times, but overall, this place is a gem. One of the top spots in Amasya for anyone who appreciates thoughtful design and a relaxing vibe.

I visited Amasra for the first time this past weekend of May 2019. Amasra occupies a very important place in the contemporary history of the modern Turkish republic. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk planned the uprising against the occupying emperyalist forces in this town. Yamaç Bistro is located on a steep hill overlooking the town. The road from center of town to the Bistro is fine, our big bus had no difficulty reaching the place. There is a big car park, so no worry where to park the car. The menu is like all other menus of similar restaurants, but what separates this place from others is the exceptional view it offers of Amasya downtown. If you happen to visit Amasra, don't forget to have a lunch or dinner at this place.

Had their special lunch (not common Turkish dishes that I had) which is fried slim potato with beef..its delicious and the beef is soft..I love the dessert.. And the scenery really make all the food & ambience super memorable..

We went by taxi from Amasya. There were cars near the building and people inside, but the men at reception told us that the restaurant was closed, just closed. That’s all. But Google Maps also suggested it should be open. It's not an appropriate attitude for a place that seems “decent.” Nevermore.

I went there for lunch. I tried kofte, chicken breasts, yamac burger, strawberries salad and juices. Everything was delicious and prices are reasonable. Sabuncuoğlu Şerefeddin Tıp Ve Tarih Müzesi, formerly known as Bimarhane, is a historic mental hospital dating back to the 14th century. Today, it has been transformed into a museum and cultural center where visitors can explore medieval medical practices and enjoy classical Turkish music concerts. The museum offers detailed insights into old-time medical surgeries and the use of ancient medical tools.
Worth visiting this hospital( Timarhane ) which treated physical and mental illnesses in period 1308
Awanya A — Google review
This museum is number one in my list of worst museums, unfortunately one that's in memoriam of the most important figure in the history of medicine "Sabuncuoglu Sherefeddin". The great surgeon is famous for his invaluable illustrated book on surgery, animal experiments, human experiments on poisons and antidotes he carried on himself. One of the pioneers of positive science, treatment of several physical and mental illnesses with sound, music and plants. His several surgery equipments are badly reproduced, his drawings are copied in the most childish way, Turkish text on billboards lack Turkish characters, English translation does not exist, some plants are exhibited in the front yard while most of them are dry dead, some do not exist, some are misplaced, and the building is restored with bricks sort of Ytong. Beautiful carvings on the portal are fortunately still present to prove that the building is actually genuine. Silicon figures are ugly as usual, gift shop selling gifts made in China, a so called "multimedia room" starts to speak with a loud distorted sound upon detecting motion, so constantly and repeatedly speaks "I'm Sabuncuoğlu Şerefeddin, right now I'm doing blah blah surgery on my patient" Another room with kiosks is yet another fiasco, where the screens are placed in a non aligned way. Multimedia material is the least readable I have seen. An animation that is supposed to be played on TV does not play. TV is just placed on the wall and I guess it s hard to turn it on every morning. A very brilliant representation of how a valuable historical figure can be obliterated. Very badly done.

(Translated by Google) One of the mysterious beauties of Amasya, Aynalı Cave is located on the slopes of Harşena Mountain, overlooking the city. When you visit this interesting place as a traveler, you will witness an extraordinary atmosphere where nature and history are intertwined. The cave gets its name from the reflection of the sun's rays when they hit it like a shiny surface. This natural phenomenon gives the cave a mystical and fascinating atmosphere. The history of Aynalı Cave dates back to the 2nd century BC, the Hellenistic period. This place was actually built as the monumental tomb of the Mithra Priest Tes. The large area inside the cave and the colorful paintings on the walls, as well as the "Great Priest Tes" inscription at the entrance support this idea. However, according to some rumors, it was also used for worship by Christians during the Byzantine period and apostle figures were drawn on its walls. There are two rooms in the cave, rectangular and square. While visiting Aynalı Cave, you will both embark on a historical journey and observe an interesting formation of nature. The shiny surface of the cave and the historical traces inside make it a special place to see in Amasya. Especially for photography enthusiasts, the light effects created by the reflection of the sun at different angles offer unique frames. (Translated by Google) The lady we initially met for the organization was very caring, polite and really helped us a lot. However, our wedding was in July. We were told that the air conditioners were working, but it was impossible. From the moment we entered the hall, the guests and we were devastated. Even though we told them many times, they were told that the air conditioner was on and the windows were opening at the end, but it was not very convincing. I expressed my fear about the music and was told not to worry, our orchestra is the best. It's a joke, but it wouldn't have been worse. I wish we had hired it from outside. Very irrelevant, nonsense transitional music was played and there was no one who knew the music playing, especially well-known songs etc. They said if we had brought it ourselves and played it from a flash memory, it would have worked 1000 times better. I mean, is there an orchestra behind you? Think of it like that and don't have any expectations. I also had a request song, the play mood was written specifically, but it was not played. The orchestra is terrible and there is an air conditioning problem. But other than that, the lady friends who took care of us were really good. Without them, there would be no acceptable part of the hall. Again, since we are the bride and groom who know how to have fun, we had to enjoy our wedding.

Mosque
Halifet Gazi Türbesi, a remarkable mausoleum from the Seljuk period, stands as a testament to the rich architectural heritage of both Seljuk and Ottoman styles. This historical site draws in curious travelers eager to delve into its cultural significance. While there are varying opinions on its construction date—often cited as 1225—it is believed that it may have been built even earlier than the adjacent madrasa, which dates back to 1210.
Interesting place. The tomb of the saint is in a roman sarcophagus which is very funny
Rafi K — Google review
(Translated by Google) There are several different opinions about the construction date of the tomb. Although it is generally said that the construction date is 1225, it is claimed that it must have been built at the same date or earlier than the madrasa, where the western façade of the tomb is adjacent, and only an arch column and stone ruins remain on the western wall of the tomb. It is understood from the inscription that the madrasah was built in 1210. Therefore, it is accepted that the tomb was built on this date or before. There are also different opinions about who had it built. However, the general opinion is that the tomb was built by Halifet Gazi, one of the Danishmend emirs. Halifet Gazi entered the service of the Seljuks after the disappearance of the Danishmend Principality and became the governor of Amasya in 1222. Gazi, who later served as the Governor of Erzurum, died during an expedition in 1232, and his body was brought to Amasya and buried in the tomb there. The tomb with a square base, octagonal body and pyramidal cone has two floors. The tomb, which used smooth cut stone in its construction, is entered through the low arched door on the south façade. Only this facade of the building was decorated, the other facades were left plain. A zigzag outer border processed in a geometric pattern forms the frame of these decorations. There is also a zigzag motif on the door arch. The door is in a muqarnas niche. There are rosettes decorated with geometric inserts and stars on the gaps on the belt and on the outer edges. There is a twin-arched window at the top of the facade. The octagonal body has a flat-arched window on the west side and a round-arched window on the east side. The east window also has three rows of muqarnas. On the lower floor, which is the funeral area, there is a marble sarcophagus placed in an east-west direction. On the south-facing part of the sarcophagus, there is a relief of a ram's head with curved horns. The decoration continues with winged eros and medusas based on these.

After Amasya was taken over by Danşment Turks, Fetihgazi turned it into a mosque in 1116 and changed its name to Fethiye mosque. It has been repaired several times. In 1883.

(Translated by Google) It's a clean mosque on the outside, I wish the inside was equally well-kept. The garden and its surroundings are very tidy, especially the architecture is very different from other mosques, the view is very good - this is a religious place, I cannot comment much - but when I saw it, I wanted to share it because it is very beautiful 😇 (Original) Dışı Tertemiz bir cami keşke içi de aynı şekilde bakımlı olsaydı. This impressive structure reaches heights of approximately 20 to 25 meters and features an array of tombs belonging to Pontic kings dating back to the third century BC, intricately carved into limestone rock along a flat wall.

Excellent lake to have a good time, it’s not too small and not too big either, it’s good for big family or couples. you can have a walk around the lake or you can enjoy the view from the main restaurant, or you can rent a paddle boats.
Fahad A — Google review
We enjoyed our visit, the other visitors were very nice to us. Paying for bathrooms after paying an entrance fee was a negative. The campsite is dirty but we liked our site and the view. The walk around the lake was nice at sunset. There were only like 5 other camping groups so we had a lot of privacy. Also not as many picnic groups as the weekend so no problems except old trash.
Robert Q — Google review
It was an excellent experience walking bare food around the lake.

A mountain like with a breathtaking view. The water is cold and clean. There is a affordable restaurant at the lake. You can also rent your own bungalows there. Currently the rates are around 2000 TL per night. You can also bring your own tent and just camp.

The Şehzadeler Museum, a wax museum located in Turkey, is an impressive and well-maintained establishment. It would greatly benefit visitors if English language support were provided.
Learn About Ottoman Princes at Şehzadeler Müzesi ! This museum is very special. It tells the story of the Ottoman princes, called “Şehzadeler.” The rooms are colorful and full of life, with clothes, pictures, and historical information. It’s perfect for both adults and children. The museum is modern but still keeps the traditional feeling. Tickets are not expensive (80 TL) and children enter for free. The staff are very helpful, polite, and always ready to guide you. It’s one of the best places to learn more about Amasya’s royal history. A must-see!
Gihan R — Google review
Close for renovation, 13 April 2018, unfortunately, I came over 600km just for this.. 😑😑😑 Came here again in March 2023, the museum is open, and not much to see, not much inside

Museum
The Ferhat and Şirin Lovers Museum is a beautiful tribute to the legendary love story of Ferhat and Şirin, Turkey's own Romeo and Juliet. The museum showcases the tragic tale of Ferhat, who traversed mountains to bring water to his beloved Şirin in Amasya.
Harrowing love story. The sculptures, like their story, are placed in hard-to-reach places.
Serdar A — Google review
Nothing special, in Google they put the time close at 19.00 in reality at 17.00. Just bit late a second they already closed the museum. Nothing to do much here. Not sure is worth it to go here 🤔
Lady O — Google review
A museum simply constructed but a lively atmosfer, where there is a monumental staty of two lovers Ferhad and Shirin and their tombs. Inside the museum there is other live story characters and mystic spiritual love section. Cafeteria is available. The physical water canal that Farhad digged is there where is the source of water to Amasya( yesil irmak nehri)
Awanya A — Google review
Very well thought museum. It has different mannequins of different love stories from Ferhat&Şirin to Leila&Mecnun and Romeo&Juilet to Mevlana Rumi! It is a small museum but if you pass through it, it's worth to visit
Melek C — Google review
Shirin and Ferhat, earlier is use to think that this a comic or a novel, but visiting this place felt the real story, this place is a small park with restaurant and museum but interesting part is they have a cemetry of şirin and Ferhat. Which was shocking to me.
Muhammet S — Google review
Another great experience on my Black Sea Tour though Turkey til Batumi in Georgia. Thank you very much.
