Kurokabe Square in Nagahama was such a fun surprise. The area has a really charming vibe with lots of cute little shops to explore. One of the highlights for me was stumbling across the figure museum. I wasn’t expecting it but it ended up being such a fun and quirky stop. Watching the glass makers at work was also really interesting. It was amazing seeing the glassblowing process up close. It’s definitely a unique spot that’s worth wandering through if you’re in the area.

It was a great experience in Kurakobe Square. It's like a local shopping street, I visit early in the morning so It's less crowded.

Stayed overnight at Nagahama and visited their Kurokabe Square, which was said to be a bustling tourist area popular with the locals.
But instead of a street bustling with activity, we were greeted to a quiet, almost empty street.
It seems what was once a lively town with crowds streaming down the streets, now lay barren as many merchants struggle to stay afloat while many others have closed, with some sections of the street having already turned into a ghost town.
We thought it was because we arrived on a Thursday afternoon, but we were greeted with the same scene when we returned the following Friday morning.
It is actually a pretty townscape, with historical architecture dating back to the Edo and Meiji era. Many interesting shops lined the streets, each with their own individual character and charm.
It’s very disheartening to see such places fade away. Hopefully the local government and community can revitalise this lovely little town.
It is a fun area. A shopping street which feels pretty private as it is not as famous as Nishiki market or anywhere else in Kyoto or major city. So i prefer this one. It offers a lot of local delicacy too. I bought many things here. Unfortunately, maybe due to covid situation, some shop are closed. It is beautiful during the winter.

I take a bus tour and one of the place we visited is lake biwa.
This place is definitely a hidden gem just like almost everything else in eastern Hokkaido.
Nothing that is mindblowing but the vibe and atmosphere is so serene and i dont mind spending hours just to sit in the bench and enjoy everything i lies my eyes on.
It is clean and they sell a nice ice cream there. During my visit on summer (june) it feels pretty breezy and cool unlike the hot weather that i experience in Tokyo.
The issue is that it is kinda difficult to reach this place without bus tour or public transport.

I captured these images of "Lake Biwa" from a moving train while traveling on the 'Kosei Line' from Shin-Osaka to Tsuruga.
Looking at a map of Japan, I never imagined that "Lake Biwa" would feel so expansive, almost like an ocean, until I experienced its beauty and vastness firsthand.
It was a truly remarkable journey and a discovery for me.
Had the privilege to see Lake Biwa from a viewpoint up in Hieizan. That vantage point gives a better perspective how the lake's shape is indeed similar to a biwa, a type of traditional Japanese lute.
Overwhelming size which makes sense as it is the largest freshwater lake in Japan. From what I've read, this is also considered to be one of the oldest lakes in the world given its formation was ~5 million years ago.
I stayed at a resort near biwa lake. It was the largest lake that I’ve ever seen in my life. The view is so beautiful. So calming and relaxing. I’d like to go on picnic or have a bbq party with my friends there 👍👍
What a place for relaxing. Great scenery over where silvery water meets the bright sky in the morning after heavy rain. A good place for onsen without doubt. Not to forget that cycling here is such a perfect place

Was not able to visit it but passed by it via thunderbird train from kanazawa to Osaka. Was able to get some pics and video of it
Started at Otsu by Biwako hotel, we biked up the west side of the lake. There is a dedicated bike lane all along the lake. It's not easy to get lost as long as you follow the road along the water. Going over the biwako ohashi you end up biking through a little town with quaint and cute little stores. It's a bit of a round about way. Going back down the east side of the lake you end up on the "bike path" along the highway. It is not the safest way but it's the only way. South lake round trip is about 50km. North lake is about 170km according to the Japanese sweets shop ojisan. Definitely a good workout to burn off all the yumminess that went into out bellies during this trip. :)

No, we didn’t get to go inside the castle nor the museum that day but the garden of the castle was so pretty!!
Lots of trees, mostly Sakura tree; it would be so pretty druing spring season! 🌸🌸
And the best part is ーLake Biwa! It’s just there next to the garden (behind the castle ig). The view on the highest floor of the castle might be so pretty!! Ahhh
My favorite garden so far and 2nd best location after Gifu Castle. 🫶🏻 (Well Gifu Castle is more of like a “stragetic” location imo. It’s so cool! Nagahama Castle on the other hand, the garden and Lake Biwa, is just sooo ✨pretty✨).

Hidden gem. Castle that re-construction with elevator and nice air conditioner. Nice place for you who are travelling in summer. Very close to Nagahama station. If you want to go sightseeing in Shiga, going to Nagahama is the best choice. Not far from the castle, there are a lot of sightseeing spot that you can enjoy all day such as Kurokabe and Kaiyodo figure museum, etc. Enjoy Shiga, everyone!

A neat little museum with a cheap ticket cost. They do not cater to foreigners so if you don't read Japanese you're mostly just paying to look at some dioramas, archaeological finds from the surrounding area, and a 360 scenic view of the surrounding area. My Japanese is limited but I had a great time.

Yanmar Museum, located just a short drive from the hotel, is an interactive children's museum that showcases exhibits on environmentally friendly practices, farm machinery, and rice planting. As other reviewers mentioned, this is not really so much of a museum as it is a kids interactive exhibit, aimed mostly at elementary or younger. There are some things in English and the games are easy to pick up and figure out without much direction.
If they renamed it to “Yanmar Tech and Interactive Exhibit” I would’ve been prepared for it.
They should’ve had a few harvesters or vehicles to sit in, at least.
This is mainly a kids interactive museum with lots of activities for the little ones to complete. There is also some stuff for middle school kids to do. Do note however, it's not worth the full price if you don't have kids. If you have kids then this site is good value. This site is also included in the Nagahama passport for 1500 yen which basically makes it an add on for the other sites in the town. If I had kids, I'd give this site 5 stars. So to put it simple, know what this museum is before you come
Excited from Hong Kong to Yanmar museum. Only few parking space, hard to find a paid parking. No historical stuffs inside, just games for kids. The only two products are not allowed to touch. Museum smaller than supermarket. Workers are very kind.
Lunch in the Yanmar Museum was cute and nice. But the technology museum was something I might not take my children again. Not saying it is a bad place to be, but felt nothing exciting there to be either.

Nice building. The story about how the company is so simplified it's a joke. No detailer explanations. They failed hard on so many levels, they should really improve their marketing there and the games aren't great. Too bad, they put a lot of money into the place. Not bad for kids.

Surprisingly Nagahama station is well equipped station. It is very close to Heiwado. In 1km radius, there are so many areas we can hop on. When you enter the station, make sure you go to the tourist information center and take the brochure there. They have the pamphlet that even providing the itinerary to go around Nagahama area. Nice.
If they are going to close all the manned ticket offices, they should put more ticketing machines at least. Shame, because the station itself is nice.

Although this station was renovated few years ago, the design and the atmosphere is still at it's nostalgic ambiance.
One of the more modern train stations in Shiga. Receieved an upgrade a few years ago. Warmed indoor seating areas during the cold winter. More connections and more convenient than most other Japan Railway stations in northern Shiga.

It's not far from the train station you get to see the beautiful park with all the cherry blossoms. There even monkey in a cage too. This castle is not as big as other but something to see.

観光客の集まる長浜市の中心地に鎮座しており、朝７時台でも既に参拝客の出入りがありました。境内は広く、本殿は八幡宮ではとても珍しい神明造で建てられています。
神社の方も親切で、戦前の官社や現在の別表神社など有名な神社を巡っている事をお伝えすると、私が直近で参拝した神社の事でお話して下さったり、県内の神社について色々と教えて下さりました。
徒歩圏内に商店街や長浜城をはじめ観光できる場所が点在しているので、神社が好きな方はもちろん、長浜市観光のひとつとして訪れるのも良いと思います。

What a gem! We did pit stop at this place thru google map recommendation. A pleasant spot for fishing. Bring along your fishing rod, sit back n enjoy (i would do that given the opportunity!

Beautiful place to visit during cherry blossom season in early April. It’s in the north and cooler here so blossoms will bloom a little later than in Kyoto or southern Shiga. In summer there are still nice views and a good places for picnics and a little swimming. If you are driving you can continue on to the Oku Biwako Parkway which has spectacular views of Lake Biwa!
Really beautiful. I am doing one full lap around Lake Biwa by bike and just stopped here. It’s April 30th and the scenery looks more like summer. Everything is very green. Definitely worth it.
Perfect place for sakura watching.
If come by car, we have to go to the car park first and go to the Biwako by bus with 300¥ per people.
If go by train, you have to take a bus, but it really far to go there by walking.
You can see sakura by waking along the street, sakura was everywhere. It is wonderful time!!
They have a small boat to look sakura from Biwako. Price: 1000¥/person for 15 minutes, safety and peaceful.

There don't have a lot of tourist, just Japanese local people and some Chinese people.

The air is very clear, quiet, cold. Sakura full of blossom. I am lucky because sakura wait for me, and this far away from my place, about 1 hour and 45 minutes for driving. Center of Shiga was end of sakura season. I came here at 8April2018.
Spectacular cherry blossoms along the roadway and lake. Full bloom had passed. The hanafubuki was stunning.
beautiful little beach. there id a parking and bbq fee but bike parking and use of the beach are free. shallow water with big rocks to climb and shady trees to sit under.
Good place. We took ship from Hikone and have abt 40 mins to walk around here. Sufficient to explore. Otherwise traffic is not so convenient unless you drive by yourself.
The amazing view here is the best reward of my whole Biwachi trip here. The scenery is too great to stop me from riding.

actually, i came here in december 2024 on a snowy day. third time in a year.

day trip here in Gransnow in Shiga pref. by car on a weekday. i would come here again someday. but, if the auto beltway between parkings and the center house is both going up and down i would give 5 stars.
it snowed a lot the previous week so that it was nice to ski with my friends. here it used to be public ski resort, but being private one. i think the fare of One Day cable ways is a bit expensive for the facility. many of them are for two persons. a few of them are for three or four.
one of the slopes is only for skiers due to the humpty-dumpty. i liked it a lot! i tried many times to run down there.
well, the food served at restaurants are quite good for the price.
Overall i like this ski resort. I am doing snowboarding and this place accommodate my needs. The snow is a bit hard so this is good place for snowboarding. I like how this place is an integrated one. So one person can come without any gear. Its just that the line is too long. I have to wait more than 30min jut to go 1 lift. Too exhausting. If you have time, better to go during weekdays. Dont go during holiday or weekend.
Awesome skii grounds. The facilities are pristine, and the slopes are well cared for. The food at the rest station is actually pretty good, too. It's not too crowded on weekdays, especially in the morning. There are difficulty levels for everyone, from toddlers to professionals looking for a light challenge. We spent all day there until we were exhausted, and we had a blast.
Great place, especially after the fresh snowfall. Some really steep and good slopes also for me as a spoiled (Swiss) advanced snowboarder.

基本的に感謝していますが、もっと良い場所になってほしいので記載させて頂きます。
◾️理由は以下の三つ
1.コースの整備をしていないので雪がボコボコのまま固まっており、初心者コースが上級者でも滑りにくい状態。
2.リフトの乗り降り場所の削れた雪をスタッフが放置しており滑りにくい、しかも降りる場所の斜度が急なので危険。
3.板を外してリフトに乗れないのと2の未整備で転倒する人が多くリフトが頻繁に止まる。
可能なら改善してほしいところは他にもあります。
レンタルが混雑時は長蛇の列になる。スクールを予約しててもレンタルが開始時間に間に合わない事もある。クレジットは使えず現金のみ。
駐車場の誘導が酷くて利用者同士の車の接触事故が多い。せっかくの1日が台無し。
リフト乗り場の整理用のコーンが混んで無くても出しっぱなし。無駄に迂回しないとリフトに乗れない。

This was my first time going there, and it was really delicious. I went there around 4 o'clock and my stomach was swollen until the next morning.
Most of the prices are less than 1000 yen, so it's easy to order and I would like to go again.

ネギ味噌ラーメンとギョーザセットを注文。注文は発券機で、頼んでからラーメン天到着まで約１０分程度。これは店内にも記載があったので苦ではなかった。3人で行きましたが３人同時に席に届きました。
今回初めて行きましたがめちゃ美味しかった。４時頃に行きましたが次の日の朝までお腹が膨れてました。
値段もほとんど1000円以内なので頼みやすくまた行きたいと思います。

Big park with castle like museum in the bank of lake BIWA. Spectacular greenish in summer. Enjoying sunset is something out of words. In the time of sakura and Momoji it is more beautiful than other times.

The beginning of Toyotomi Hideyoshi‘s great dream. But this castle seems to be rebuilt by concrete. You can learn some history here and have a good view of Biwa lake.
When a school field trip isn’t visiting it’s the most beautiful, quiet place.
Amazing place to watch sunrise and sunsets from. Not too crowded as this place is not too well known for tourists, which is perfect for people who hate crowds. I bet this place will be amazing on the spring. Will definitely go back then!
It's an epic castle by the sea. The castle is now a very well exhibited museum with great artifacts. Caution Japanese language museum only. The staff are helpful though. The sea location makes for amazing photo ops
Perfect view of Biwako, Castle and kids playground. Cherry Blossom is best here in Spring.
Great park with a range of areas including a new children's play area. There is seating, toilets and free parking for 3 hours.

A really good reconstruction (in the original building) of a late 19th century station waiting rooms.
They have 1 old diesel-electric and 1 magnificent, massive steam locomotive. You are allowed up to the cab and footplate - a real treat for train needs.
Not much else there, 100% Japanese so take google translate with you if you do not read Japanese.
Only take 30mins or so.
I’m not particularly interested in railways, but I had fun visiting this museum. It shows how Nagahama train station used to be in the past.
Fun place to be! Almost unknown place but it is a great place to visit if you are steam engine fan. Old station is also a nice experience!

It's s very cute building with information about trains. Even though it's all in Japanese is still interesting to see the massiv steam trains and see the historical building. Entrance fee 200¥

Nestled along the Hokkoku Highway in Motohama-cho, Nagahama City, the Kaiyodo Figure Museum Kurokabe is a treasure trove for fans of figurines and models. This captivating museum showcases an impressive collection that includes thousands of action figures, dinosaur replicas, and fantastical creatures crafted by the renowned company Kaiyodo.

A better than expected museum which costs 800 yen or can be entered as a part of the 1000 yen for 5 sites in Nagahama passport. Lots of details in the figurines with a strong emphasis of Evangelion
A great museum with a wide range of figures to see and explore. I had a great and fun experience seeing all of those amazing figures. In the end you can buy your own figure from the store. It is also very cheap for what it is.
Awesome figure museum. You can find from animal plastic figure up to anime figure. There is souvenir shop in the front of museum if you want to buy the figure. Absolutely recommend place to be visited. It is fun to bring the children also.
Very fun experience if you love dioramas and miniatures and tiny toys.

A figure museum where various figures are displayed. You would be amazed by how many figures there are in this museum.
It costs 1,000 yen for a person which I think is a bit over-priced.
They give you a token with the entrance tickey. With this token, you can insert it in a gatcha machine and hopefully get a decent figure on your way out.
The token itself costs 300 yen.
