Kurokabe Square in Nagahama was such a fun surprise. The area has a really charming vibe with lots of cute little shops to explore. One of the highlights for me was stumbling across the figure museum. I wasn’t expecting it but it ended up being such a fun and quirky stop. Watching the glass makers at work was also really interesting. It was amazing seeing the glassblowing process up close. It’s definitely a unique spot that’s worth wandering through if you’re in the area.

It was a great experience in Kurakobe Square. It's like a local shopping street, I visit early in the morning so It's less crowded.

(Trip was made back then on 28 Nov 2019, 2 years before the Covid-19 Pandemic hit) Stayed overnight at Nagahama and visited their Kurokabe Square, which was said to be a bustling tourist area popular with the locals. But instead of a street bustling with activity, we were greeted to a quiet, almost empty street. It seems what was once a lively town with crowds streaming down the streets, now lay barren as many merchants struggle to stay afloat while many others have closed, with some sections of the street having already turned into a ghost town. We thought it was because we arrived on a Thursday afternoon, but we were greeted with the same scene when we returned the following Friday morning. It is actually a pretty townscape, with historical architecture dating back to the Edo and Meiji era. Many interesting shops lined the streets, each with their own individual character and charm. It’s very disheartening to see such places fade away. Hopefully the local government and community can revitalise this lovely little town.
Shingo — Google review
It is a fun area. A shopping street which feels pretty private as it is not as famous as Nishiki market or anywhere else in Kyoto or major city. So i prefer this one. It offers a lot of local delicacy too. I bought many things here. Unfortunately, maybe due to covid situation, some shop are closed. It is beautiful during the winter.

Lake Biwa, named after the shape of a Japanese lute, is a picturesque destination offering various water sports and leisurely strolls. Located in Shiga Prefecture, it is surrounded by attractions such as Hikone Castle and Chikubu Island. The area provides opportunities for outdoor activities like visiting Rakuraku Garden, Koki Park, Takeshima Island, and more.
Absolute stunning. I take a bus tour and one of the place we visited is lake biwa. This place is definitely a hidden gem just like almost everything else in eastern Hokkaido. Nothing that is mindblowing but the vibe and atmosphere is so serene and i dont mind spending hours just to sit in the bench and enjoy everything i lies my eyes on. It is clean and they sell a nice ice cream there. During my visit on summer (june) it feels pretty breezy and cool unlike the hot weather that i experience in Tokyo. The issue is that it is kinda difficult to reach this place without bus tour or public transport.
William G — Google review
I captured these images of "Lake Biwa" from a moving train while traveling on the 'Kosei Line' from Shin-Osaka to Tsuruga. Looking at a map of Japan, I never imagined that "Lake Biwa" would feel so expansive, almost like an ocean, until I experienced its beauty and vastness firsthand. It was a truly remarkable journey and a discovery for me.
Okawa T — Google review
Had the privilege to see Lake Biwa from a viewpoint up in Hieizan. That vantage point gives a better perspective how the lake's shape is indeed similar to a biwa, a type of traditional Japanese lute. Overwhelming size which makes sense as it is the largest freshwater lake in Japan. From what I've read, this is also considered to be one of the oldest lakes in the world given its formation was ~5 million years ago.
Anne F — Google review
I stayed at a resort near biwa lake. It was the largest lake that I’ve ever seen in my life. The view is so beautiful. So calming and relaxing. I’d like to go on picnic or have a bbq party with my friends there 👍👍

What a place for relaxing. Great scenery over where silvery water meets the bright sky in the morning after heavy rain. A good place for onsen without doubt. Not to forget that cycling here is such a perfect place

Lake Biwa is a stunning natural gem located in Shiga Prefecture. The views are breathtaking, with serene waters surrounded by lush green mountains. It’s perfect for outdoor activities like cycling, boating, and hiking, offering something for everyone. The area also boasts charming towns with rich history and delicious local cuisine. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat or an adventure, Lake Biwa is a must-visit destination. The sunset over the lake is particularly unforgettable, making it a memorable spot for nature lovers and photographers alike!

Was not able to visit it but passed by it via thunderbird train from kanazawa to Osaka. Was able to get some pics and video of it
David T — Google review
Started at Otsu by Biwako hotel, we biked up the west side of the lake. There is a dedicated bike lane all along the lake. It's not easy to get lost as long as you follow the road along the water. Going over the biwako ohashi you end up biking through a little town with quaint and cute little stores. It's a bit of a round about way. Going back down the east side of the lake you end up on the "bike path" along the highway. It is not the safest way but it's the only way. South lake round trip is about 50km. North lake is about 170km according to the Japanese sweets shop ojisan. Definitely a good workout to burn off all the yumminess that went into out bellies during this trip. :)

Nagahama Castle Historical Museum, originally constructed in the 16th century and reconstructed in 1983, offers a glimpse into local feudal history. Built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1575, it replaced Odani Castle as his ruling base due to its more accessible location. Despite being ordered for destruction under Tokugawa's rule, Nagahama Castle stands today as a testament to the town's enduring Machi-shu culture.
A nicely rebuilt tenshu. There is an elevator and the views are really nice!!! Friendly staff as well, some cool souvenirs. Gojoin is here. Castle memorial stamp too, But no '100 Best Castles' stamp.

📍Nagahama Castle and Lake Biwa!! 🫶🏻 I swear this one’s really pretty too. 🥹🥹 No, we didn’t get to go inside the castle nor the museum that day but the garden of the castle was so pretty!! Lots of trees, mostly Sakura tree; it would be so pretty druing spring season! 🌸🌸 And the best part is ーLake Biwa! It’s just there next to the garden (behind the castle ig). The view on the highest floor of the castle might be so pretty!! Ahhh My favorite garden so far and 2nd best location after Gifu Castle. 🫶🏻 (Well Gifu Castle is more of like a “stragetic” location imo. It’s so cool! Nagahama Castle on the other hand, the garden and Lake Biwa, is just sooo ✨pretty✨). I love. 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 I’d probably revisit on spring, if I can. 🥹🥹

Hidden gem. Castle that re-construction with elevator and nice air conditioner. Nice place for you who are travelling in summer. Very close to Nagahama station. If you want to go sightseeing in Shiga, going to Nagahama is the best choice. Not far from the castle, there are a lot of sightseeing spot that you can enjoy all day such as Kurokabe and Kaiyodo figure museum, etc. Enjoy Shiga, everyone!

Almost no tourists and a very beautiful garden with beautiful views of Lake Biwa definitely worth the visit

A neat little museum with a cheap ticket cost. They do not cater to foreigners so if you don't read Japanese you're mostly just paying to look at some dioramas, archaeological finds from the surrounding area, and a 360 scenic view of the surrounding area. My Japanese is limited but I had a great time.

Yanmar Museum, located just a short drive from the hotel, is an interactive children's museum that showcases exhibits on environmentally friendly practices, farm machinery, and rice planting. The museum was established to celebrate YANMAR's 100th anniversary and is dedicated to the technology and products of this Japanese engine manufacturer. While some visitors feel it is more of an interactive exhibit than a traditional museum, it offers engaging activities for young children and middle schoolers.
Fun place to visit w family as some screen games, soccer ,digger to try ,tractor to look , mini rock climbing Upstairs has footpath, history of the founder, rooftop look out
Cc H — Google review
As other reviewers mentioned, this is not really so much of a museum as it is a kids interactive exhibit, aimed mostly at elementary or younger. There are some things in English and the games are easy to pick up and figure out without much direction. If they renamed it to “Yanmar Tech and Interactive Exhibit” I would’ve been prepared for it. They should’ve had a few harvesters or vehicles to sit in, at least.
William T — Google review
This is mainly a kids interactive museum with lots of activities for the little ones to complete. There is also some stuff for middle school kids to do. Do note however, it's not worth the full price if you don't have kids. If you have kids then this site is good value. This site is also included in the Nagahama passport for 1500 yen which basically makes it an add on for the other sites in the town. If I had kids, I'd give this site 5 stars. So to put it simple, know what this museum is before you come
Mathew F — Google review
Excited from Hong Kong to Yanmar museum. Only few parking space, hard to find a paid parking. No historical stuffs inside, just games for kids. The only two products are not allowed to touch. Museum smaller than supermarket. Workers are very kind.

Nice building. The story about how the company is so simplified it's a joke. No detailer explanations. They failed hard on so many levels, they should really improve their marketing there and the games aren't great. Too bad, they put a lot of money into the place. Not bad for kids.

(Translated by Google) Former prefecture company. It is one of nine Beppyote Shrines in Shiga Prefecture, and was added to the list in 2006. It is located in the center of Nagahama City, where tourists gather, and worshipers were already coming and going at 7am. The precincts are spacious, and the main hall is built in the Shinmei style, which is very rare for Hachimangu shrines. The people at the shrine were also kind, and when I told them that I was visiting famous shrines such as the prewar government shrine and the current Beppon Shrine, they told me about the shrine they had recently visited, and asked me about various shrines in the prefecture. Thank you for letting me know. There are shopping streets, Nagahama Castle, and other sightseeing spots within walking distance, so it's a good place to visit if you like shrines or as part of your Nagahama sightseeing tour. Beautiful place to visit during cherry blossom season in early April. It’s in the north and cooler here so blossoms will bloom a little later than in Kyoto or southern Shiga. In summer there are still nice views and a good places for picnics and a little swimming. If you are driving you can continue on to the Oku Biwako Parkway which has spectacular views of Lake Biwa!

Perfect place for sakura watching. If come by car, we have to go to the car park first and go to the Biwako by bus with 300¥ per people. If go by train, you have to take a bus, but it really far to go there by walking. You can see sakura by waking along the street, sakura was everywhere. It is wonderful time!! They have a small boat to look sakura from Biwako. Price: 1000¥/person for 15 minutes, safety and peaceful. It is perfect for watching sakura and watching Biwako, the heart of Shiga. Flower and lake, so romantic and peaceful. They have some small food under the sakura for traveller, bbq pork and noodle. There don't have a lot of tourist, just Japanese local people and some Chinese people. It is a quiet place for me and the people who don't like noisy and crowned tourist spots. The air is very clear, quiet, cold. Sakura full of blossom. I am lucky because sakura wait for me, and this far away from my place, about 1 hour and 45 minutes for driving. Center of Shiga was end of sakura season. I came here at 8April2018.

The resort features a lively food court where you can refuel after an exhilarating day on the slopes, often accompanied by live DJ music to enhance the atmosphere.
The place is very fun, although there are of people, there are a lot of ski tracks suitable for all levels of people. Overall I think the ski park is a very good place to go on holiday.

Kid's Park amazing. Snowboarding very good. The restaurant is a chaos with few places to sit and many people holding seats without letting other people use them. The food is expensive but that's to be expected. The katsu kare the meat was very thin, at most 3mm.

february 2025 i would come here again! the same as last year, i came here with my friends again on a weekday. actually, i came here in december 2024 on a snowy day. third time in a year. the primary reason to visit is the distance, without using highway, it takes about 1 and half an hour. the second, the Champion course (only for skiers) here is the best for humpty dumpty slopes of all of my skiing experience. i tried it 20 times till the end of lift operation today. it was a good practice. getting to the center house, which sells lift tickets and there is a restaurant, from the 3rd parking area is much much better than the year of 2024, cz ☆'escalators became equipped for going up and down between the parking and the center house'☆.it is good for us not to have to walk down to the parking after having a good time(^o^) january 2024 day trip here in Gransnow in Shiga pref. by car on a weekday. i would come here again someday. but, if the auto beltway between parkings and the center house is both going up and down i would give 5 stars. it snowed a lot the previous week so that it was nice to ski with my friends. here it used to be public ski resort, but being private one. i think the fare of One Day cable ways is a bit expensive for the facility. many of them are for two persons. a few of them are for three or four. one of the slopes is only for skiers due to the humpty-dumpty. i liked it a lot! i tried many times to run down there. well, the food served at restaurants are quite good for the price.

Overall i like this ski resort. I am doing snowboarding and this place accommodate my needs. The snow is a bit hard so this is good place for snowboarding. I like how this place is an integrated one. So one person can come without any gear. Its just that the line is too long. I have to wait more than 30min jut to go 1 lift. Too exhausting. If you have time, better to go during weekdays. Dont go during holiday or weekend.

Awesome skii grounds. The facilities are pristine, and the slopes are well cared for. The food at the rest station is actually pretty good, too. It's not too crowded on weekdays, especially in the morning. There are difficulty levels for everyone, from toddlers to professionals looking for a light challenge. We spent all day there until we were exhausted, and we had a blast.

Great place, especially after the fresh snowfall. Some really steep and good slopes also for me as a spoiled (Swiss) advanced snowboarder. The lower slopes were a bit crowded (video), but it was on a Saturday. The upper slopes were quite free though (foto) and I never had to queue more than 5 minutes. Getting there by Shinkansen and Shuttle bus from Maibara (East Exit) was easy enough.

Nestled along the Hokkoku Highway in Nakanokawachi Yogo-cho, Nagahama City, Yogo Kogen Resort Yap is a charming ski destination that offers a delightful experience for winter sports enthusiasts. With five well-maintained courses catering to various skill levels from beginners to advanced skiers, this resort provides an inviting atmosphere for families and novice snowboarders alike.
(Translated by Google) [Slopes that beginners should not come to] Basically, I am grateful, but I would like it to be a better place, so I would like to mention it. ◾️There are three reasons below. 1. The course has not been maintained, so the snow remains lumpy and hardened, making the beginner's course difficult to slip on even for advanced users. 2. The staff has left shaved snow where the lift gets on and off, making it difficult to slip, and the place where you get off is dangerous because it is steep. 3. You can't take off the board to get on the lift, and 2. Many people fall because of the lack of maintenance, and the lift stops frequently. There are other areas that I would like to see improved if possible. When rentals are busy, there will be long lines. Even if you make a reservation for a school, the rental may not arrive in time for the start time. No credit card accepted, cash only. Parking lot guidance is poor and there are many accidents involving cars between users. My day was ruined. The cones for organizing the lift boarding area are left out even when it's not crowded. You can't get on the lift without taking a detour. etc... It's a valuable ski resort in the Kansai region, so I'm grateful that it's open, but I think it could become an even better slope with a little effort and consideration from the management and staff. We hope that you will come back again and that this will be the most enjoyable and memorable ski slope for everyone.

skiing here for a whole fay. it was ok, but the burns were so short that i could run down for a few minutes. i guess it is an old ski resort for the local. if you are a beginner or with small kids, i recommend YAP. however, i don't prefer to come here because a group of snowboarders were sitting and chattering in front of the lift gates, not lining. In addition, they were on the bumpy slope chattering each other. i can underground if you were only a beginner, it's impossible to run down. but they were impolite there. they should have moved away to the sides.

(Translated by Google) Visited on a Sunday in mid-February. The entire course was skiable with over 4 meters of snow. There was almost no wait for the lift and I was able to ski comfortably on the course without any crowds. The Monte Rosa course is suitable for beginners and intermediates, but the slope suddenly becomes steeper after passing the A lift platform. The Valle Blanche course has a moderate slope up to the C lift intermediate station. Both courses are suitable for beginners and intermediates, but are not recommended for those who are not used to them. The Brevan course is suitable for intermediate skiers, but although the course is narrow, the slope is not that steep, so even beginners can ski at a leisurely pace. For beginners and beginners, we recommend the Brevent course, which is located below the C lift intermediate station between the Mont Blanc and Valle Blanche courses.

I thought that the autumn leaves would be at their peak, but surprisingly there were many places that were still green, so it seems that the leaves will not fall for a long time yet. Ginkgo leaves are beautifully yellow I was doing it. Looking at other people's posts, it seems like the area around the pond is supposed to be the best spot for autumn leaves (there weren't many autumn leaves on this day). The grounds that can be visited are not that large, and 10 to 15 minutes is enough to just look around. (Translated by Google) A shrine with a mysterious atmosphere. I heard the sound of people crunching snow (behind me) and the sound of bells. I experienced phenomena that made me think, "What's this? Is someone nearby?" I didn't find it creepy or scary, though. The founding of Yuya Shrine is unknown. It seems that a person from Izumo Province visited this area on his travels and had the villagers dig a pond, where a hot spring with miraculous powers gushed forth. He cleared the weed-covered wasteland and sowed grain seeds, which grew well. He rejoiced, saying, "This is a gift from our ancestral deity, Okuninushi-no-Mikoto!" and built a shrine on a rock to worship the grain. Hmm...it seems a little like myth, but I thought, maybe indigenous beliefs start in places like this... (Translated by Google) I visited on a Friday night at 8pm, and it seemed to be a popular restaurant, so there were several groups waiting. The entrance was crowded with people waiting, which is a negative rating. I would like to see some kind of improvement, such as creating a waiting area, providing chairs, or allowing people to wait in their cars. I ordered a large serving of green onion soy sauce char siu. The soup was piping hot. I like it a little more lukewarm. I should have waited until it cooled down, but it was my fault for not waiting. The noodles were thick, but I felt like they didn't go well with the soup. My companion ordered the miso flavor, so I got a bite, and the miso and thick noodles went really well together. The miso had both sweetness and spiciness and was very delicious. Ah, I wish it was miso flavored. I ordered the premium salt tonkotsu for the first time at Yamaokaya, and topped it with char siu. I chose firm/large/strong, but the regular flavor may have been better. Compared to other restaurants, the char siu seems a little on the firm side. The only disappointment was that the soup was a little cold by the time it was served. It didn't bother me much the last time I visited, so I think it was an operational mistake. As there are only a few Yamaokaya in Kansai, I would like to come again. This 24-hour store is like a place of comfort, where you can stop by on a late-night drive or before going to work early in the morning. When you enter the store, even the time spent thinking about which bowl to order in front of the ticket machine is fun. The special miso and green onion ramen is topped with a rich white miso soup and plenty of white green onions, with a mellow richness and crunchy texture that are exquisitely intertwined. The spicy miso and green onion ramen is addictive with its spicy spiciness, and is especially recommended on cold days. Another attraction unique to Yamaokaya is that you can customize the firmness of the noodles, the strength of the flavor, and the amount of fat to your liking. During lunchtime on weekdays from 11:00 to 14:00, a great value service set is offered. For example, with Service Set A, you can combine ramen with side dishes such as a pork rice bowl or rice with a raw egg, which is very filling and satisfying. A really good reconstruction (in the original building) of a late 19th century station waiting rooms. They have 1 old diesel-electric and 1 magnificent, massive steam locomotive. You are allowed up to the cab and footplate - a real treat for train needs. Not much else there, 100% Japanese so take google translate with you if you do not read Japanese. Only take 30mins or so.

I’m not particularly interested in railways, but I had fun visiting this museum. It shows how Nagahama train station used to be in the past.

Fun place to be! Almost unknown place but it is a great place to visit if you are steam engine fan. Old station is also a nice experience!

Small train museum with two trains you can get up and close to. Great place for small kids

Great railway museum! The kids loved the decommissioned locos and model trains they could play with!

It's s very cute building with information about trains. Even though it's all in Japanese is still interesting to see the massiv steam trains and see the historical building. Entrance fee 200¥

Nestled along the Hokkoku Highway in Motohama-cho, Nagahama City, the Kaiyodo Figure Museum Kurokabe is a treasure trove for fans of figurines and models. This captivating museum showcases an impressive collection that includes thousands of action figures, dinosaur replicas, and fantastical creatures crafted by the renowned company Kaiyodo.
Quite a few Kaiyodo figures and dioramas up on display, great if you’re a fan of their creations, garage kits, and toys til now!

A better than expected museum which costs 800 yen or can be entered as a part of the 1000 yen for 5 sites in Nagahama passport. Lots of details in the figurines with a strong emphasis of Evangelion

A great museum with a wide range of figures to see and explore. I had a great and fun experience seeing all of those amazing figures. In the end you can buy your own figure from the store. It is also very cheap for what it is.

Awesome figure museum. You can find from animal plastic figure up to anime figure. There is souvenir shop in the front of museum if you want to buy the figure. Absolutely recommend place to be visited. It is fun to bring the children also.

I can almost live here… My Haven… #toys #toys #kaiyodomuseum sample of my toy photography which I bought from Kaiyodo

A figure museum where various figures are displayed. You would be amazed by how many figures there are in this museum. It costs 1,000 yen for a person which I think is a bit over-priced. They give you a token with the entrance tickey. With this token, you can insert it in a gatcha machine and hopefully get a decent figure on your way out. The token itself costs 300 yen.
