Church
Badajoz Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, is a Roman Catholic church with a fortress-like exterior and Gothic interior. Built in the 13th century, it resembles an ancient fortification with strong walls and bastions. The cathedral features a unique blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Plateresque styles in its windows and facade.
Beautiful cathedral! Well worth the cost of entry. Sadly, we didn't have time to visit the museum, as well. We especially enjoyed the information presented as we climbed up into the bell tower. And the art and architecture throughout is amazing. Also, upon entering the cathedral, we were greeted by Carmen, who gave us a summary of the cathedral's history. Later, when we asked, she kindly recommended other places to visit around Extremadura. (This advice took us to Olivenza and the Basilica in Guadalajara. Places we had't even considered in our plans but so happy we took her advice & experienced them.)

historic mainly 15th century old Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Badajoz on Plaza de Espana looks like fortress. Only one 40m high tower, second wasn't built to make the cathedral symmetric. Visited the square on Saturday, but the entrance to the church was closed.
Tomi V — Google review
With a height of 41 meters, it presides over the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Juan Bautista. Its sober composition is highlighted by its beautiful windows carved in stone, one in the Gothic style and the other Plateresque, closed in 1532. As well as shields, faces, gargoyles and other decorative motifs, there is a clock on two of its faces, which was reportedly renovated in 1715.

The Alcazaba of Badajoz is a historic citadel that served as a crucial control point between the Castilian plateau, Portugal, and Andalusia. Dating back to the Almohad period, it was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931. The fortress features several towers and gateways surrounding an archaeological museum and gardens.
Great place to explore, you can walk the whole perimeter around the walls. Differing views, including great one over Plaza Alta.Free entry and free car park.

Really fun to explore. Doesn’t feel touristy at all. I think there were only two people exploring this lovely spot the morning f I was there. All the I information about the history of the Alcazaba is in Spanish, Portuguese, and English. It was particularly nice in the morning with the sun peaking out from behind the hill on which the Alcazaba sits.

Alcazaba de Badajoz Type: castle Time spent: 60 min Entrance: free Parking: available WC: available The Alcazaba of Badajoz is an ancient citadel in Badajoz. The alcazaba as it now appears was built by the Almohads in the 12th century, although it probably existed from the 9th century, when Badajoz was founded. In the 11th and 12th centuries it was the residence of the rulers of Badajoz. It was declared a national monument of Spain in 1931.

When visiting Badajoz, make sure to start your itinerary at Plaza La Soledad. This emblematic square is home to the Soledad Church, built on the former Virgen de la Soledad hermitage, the city's patron saint. Despite its small size, this square boasts some of Badajoz's most beautiful buildings such as the Tres Campanas Building, which has been converted into a restaurant and hotel, Casa Alvarez, and La Giralda.
Fantastic building just marred by the fact that Telefonica have pulled out of the shops below so it spoils a wonderful piece of architecture. I feel that Badajoz Council should do something about this as it's such an iconic building.

Very different from when you look at that architecture, and on the other side, the architecture is very different, very rural and neglected. Convento de San José, also known as "The Adorers," is a stunning Catholic church located in the downtown area of Badajoz. The architecture and detailed interior make it a must-see, especially when it lights up in the evening. This neo-Gothic building, which emerged at the end of the 18th century, stands out for its unique style that is hardly found in the area.
(Translated by Google) Convento de San José’s ancient monastery at night Pl. San José, 06001 Badajoz The convent has the same name as the square, since there is the site (especially on its ruins) of the ancient monastery of San José, a very important saint of Badajoz since the time of Alfonso IX of Leon, who even had him saint. He was the patron saint of the diocese for centuries until he was replaced by the current patron saint of the diocese, St. John. History and style of the Monastery of San José: The Monastery of San Jose Pilgrim is a Neo-Gothic building (appeared at the end of the 18th century and was inspired by the Gothic of the Middle Ages), an architectural style that has almost no remains in the area, making it even more unique if possible. Its location is also striking, as it is between the streets of San Anton and Suárez de Figueroa and between Plaza San José and Alcazaba de Arabia, giving it the appearance of a large naval building arriving on the coast . This pilgrim's monastery, although built on the ruins of an old monastery, has a fairly modern date (1917) in historical terms, but it retains treasures and details that are as important as the church and nothing more than the restoration of the old monastery owned later. The convent was rededicated to San José because it was the site of the convent and as a result of one of the most important historical events of the city of Badajoz: the reconquest of the city under the power of Badajoz. Muslim, built on 19 March 1230 by a section of Alfonso IX of Leon. This ancient monastery was built on the site where the monastery stands today until the 19th century, when the war of independence broke out and the bombings suffered were so extensive that they ended the centuries-old monastery The hospital never recovered from its deterioration. Francisco Franco Pineda, a popular local Seville military engineer and architect, was responsible for designing the building, along with teacher Adel Pinna Casas. A monastery. In addition to the chapel, the main facade of the monastery is also striking, simple if somewhat small in style, consisting of a pointed arch with a design by Julio Clivilles Relief of baby Jesus and two angels. A rose window, Gothic roof and bell tower with bells complete the building. The vault covering the abbey church is semi-cylindrical with a semicircular dome, very much in the style of Gothic and its ribbed vaults. The exterior has many decorative elements such as spiers, gargoyles and bas-reliefs, many of which are now lost. Unfortunately, over time, the government's negligence in restoring its artistic and architectural heritage, and the inability of the faithful to afford adequate conservation and renovation, means that this monumental building is at its worst. Admirers have repeatedly addressed the community through different media, denouncing the situation and asking for immediate help to protect a heritage that should not disappear. In 2006, a series of landslides occurred but were barely addressed as the budget was only allocated to repairing the three main facades. However, this does not eliminate the slightest interest in the must-see attractions of Badajoz, as this cult building remains a great interpretation of Extremadura's history and a gateway to its deepest and most Christian roots.

(Translated by Google) The Parish of Santo Domingo in Badajoz is much more than a place of worship; It is a space where faith, history and dedication meet. Located in the heart of the city, its cozy and close atmosphere invites both regular parishioners and those who visit for the first time. The parish pays tribute to Saint Vincent de Paul, whose example of life continues to inspire all who pass through its doors. This saint, known for his unwavering dedication to those most in need and for being the founder of the Congregation of the Mission and the Daughters of Charity, is a model of dedication and solidarity. The beautiful church of Badajoz, known as Parroquia San Andrés Apóstol, attracts a large number of people on the 28th day of each month. This is because it houses the revered image of San Judas Tadeo, and individuals come to seek his blessings and favors. Additionally, during Holy Week, this church showcases the processions of the revered Holy Christ of Descent and Lady of Hope.

The Parroquia de San Agustín (Sta. María la Real) in the city of Badajoz is a significant historical site that is worth exploring, especially with the assistance of a guide. It serves as the headquarters for various brotherhoods, including the one responsible for organizing the official procession of Badajoz known as the Holy Burial. Additionally, it is also home to the Risen One and Rocio Brotherhoods.

Now they have a magnificent and enormous Nativity scene, in which I suppose they have spent many hours in which the good taste, effort and enthusiasm can be appreciated, with many daily visits. But don't forget to contribute a good bonus, as the figures and materials to assemble it also cost, they put in the effort. Let's help it be maintained, they deserve it. (Translated by Google) We have a family member in the columbarium. When we went to hire it, everything was good words and facilities from the priest. If we let us know we could go without a problem. Well, it turns out that it only opens once a month. Being granted an extra visit is something unusual, it always causes problems. That day it opens it is full of people and this man is like a nightclub bouncer rushing. No privacy, it seems like a fair. It is forbidden to leave flowers, which according to him stain. If it rains you don't enter, which also gets stained. And be careful not to turn to the wrong door or do something he doesn't like, because then he starts to reproach everything loudly. This man behaves the opposite of how he should.

(Translated by Google) Very cold architecture, already very unwelcoming interior and even more so with how cold it is and with all the doors open. I don't understand why everything is open because it's so cold that you can't stop to pray or meditate calmly. They should start thinking logically because while politicians do not open a single window, ordinary people have to suffer cold everywhere unjustifiably. Reflect. It wouldn't hurt even if it were a coat of white paint because it looks like a bunker instead of a church.
