Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary is a charming and educational zoo dedicated to providing a safe haven for rescued and rehabilitated animals. Unlike traditional zoos, it does not breed, sell, or trade animals. The sanctuary features diverse habitats housing a variety of creatures including monkeys, tigers, bears, wolves, and big cats. Visitors can participate in interactive educational programs and enjoy seasonal events like 'ZooLights.'
A wedding at the zoo?! This was the most magical experience we could’ve ever asked for. From beginning to end the zoo team were absolutely incredible and we were so lucky to have had this dream opportunity! The little details and stories the docents told were just the cherry on top of an already perfect day! We love visiting the animals here and it’s such a special reminder of our wedding day.

Love this place. Never disappointed. Love the people that work there. Appreciate them very much. You can tell they love the animals and they take great care of them. The precious animals are so sweet. I’m glad this facility exists so that we can be a part of their lives and they can be a part of our lives. A lot of hard work and effort goes into this facility. It’s clean. It’s well maintained. I enjoy going here every time.
Lynda S — Google review
Amazing little zoo. The animals are well cared for and the docent was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. I love seeing all bear, sand cat and mountain lion. You do need to have patience to wait around and look for the animals as they can be resting all the way at the back when it’s hot. But incredibly worth the experience for just $10. Definitely will revisit

Its a beautiful small zoo neiboring Folsom's City Lions Park and the Library. Ample parking, wheelchair friendly, restrooms, water fountains. Great staff. There is a small train outside with affordable pricing. No pets allowed except for service animals. Open at 10 am closes at 4 pm Thursdays to Sundays. Last admisdion at 3:30 pm Under 2 years is free. Above is $10.
Waleed J — Google review
Went for a quick walk last Saturday, the Zoo is small but your way around it and how everything is distributed made it a very enjoyable experience, entry is only $10 so give it a try!
Ramon R — Google review
The zoo / sanctuary was so much better than we’d expected. We thought it would be small, but actually, we spent a good two hours there I lived the written stories of the animals and the very clear, educational descriptions. The staff, at the entry, the gift shop, and in the zoo, were friendly, knowledgeable and approachable, happy to speak with zoo visitors. there are ramps everywhere, so this is easy to navigate with strollers Highly recommended, especially for children
Rebecca M — Google review
This zoo truly is a sanctuary, not just for the animals but for a busy minded person such as myself, it’s the perfect place to feel calm and at peace. The animals are all rescued and they have such unique personalities. I love Pogo, the cockatoo, the best. He loves to dance if you play music for him and it’s the cutest! I also love that the park is just beside it, as well as the train, and some awesome walking trails behind the park. It makes for a great day with the littles for sure.
Gloria S — Google review
They have made many improvements over the years. The addition of a new bear is a crowd pleaser... What a cutie! Also we had a chance to speak with some of the docents Fabulous sources of information!

Folsom Powerhouse State Historic Park is a popular state park featuring the first distribution point for electricity in a major city in 1895. The museum section of the park offers educational opportunities for kids to learn about electricity by pushing buttons, while the actual powerhouse showcases an epic history of how everything was constructed and transported with many historical photographs available. Additionally, docents are knowledgeable and explain operational processes from when the powerhouse was in use.
Go down the hill and check out the inside of the powerhouse! The interpreters were great! Super knowledgeable and fun! There’s also nice walking paths and lots of historic pictures. This is Californias first power generation facility.
Bartellj — Google review
This place has an interesting history. If you happen to be in Folsom, this is the one two of their biggest attractions.

It was beautiful place to hangout with friends and families, smiles real nature, just do 15 deep breath and enjoy the weather. Most people around there takes there their dogs for waking. There are a couple of tables for eating foods or breakfast, but not sure if allowed to barbecue because I didn’t see any thing for barbecue, but lots of restaurants nearby, restrooms 🚽 are available for people during daytime. I really like it.... walking, hiking, riding .....
Sayed A — Google review
Great place to visit and learn about the areas history of generating electricity. The main powerhouse has an impressive wall of granite, and learning how it was all constructed was very interesting. Inside the park building there are science demonstrations to help explain electricity to kids.
Anon Y — Google review
Nice little museum close the the historic Folsom town center. Parking is 10$, but it's well worth the visit as it is an amazingly preserved hydro electric station that wasone of the first to generate electricity for Sacramento back in 1895. It was operational until the 50s and then became a preserved park hence all the original equipment from the era.

History Museums
The Folsom Prison Museum is a small museum and gift shop located in an old home, filled with prison artifacts and Johnny Cash memorabilia. It offers insight into the notorious Folsom State Prison, established in 1880, showcasing its history and famous inmates like Johnny Cash. Visitors can explore a collection of artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia chronicling the prison's past, including handmade weapons, inmate artwork, guard uniforms, and more.
Unique museum showing the grim history of corrections in the last century. Sits right in front of prison gate, next to processing center for visitors of inmates. Makes you glad you are free to go!
Carla S — Google review
Super Cool to see in person, unfortunately the museum was closed, they relys on volunteers to run it, but the guards were so polite and full of knowledge and history. We had a great time.
Miriah B — Google review
We are so happy we went here. It's a little off the beaten path and we were skeptical in taking the time to go, but well worth it. The guy running the gift shop was extremely nice and even though it's small the museum is worth doing. You even park right outside the gate so it's a little weird being that close to guards and people going inside for visits. Lots of Johnny cash memorabilia too.
Sunset T — Google review
It’s closed now but you still can go to the entrance and take pictures. The guard staff was awesome at information and knowledge.
Dudley T — Google review
Dont drink that dirty water. Fascinating historic stop. It's sobering why it was built and still is in use. I love the museum sharing actuall history of the prison and the work and engineering the prisoners put into the construction and maintenance of the facilities. Guards were very accomadating.
Ed C — Google review
Great museum with lots of info packed into a small space. The best part was listening to the stories of the docent onsite with so many years of experience inside the prison. Definitely worth a couple hours of exploring!
Andrew T — Google review
To be honest, the overall impression about this spot is so-so cause the admission is $2 also they don’t accept cards payments for minimum transactions under $5, which sounds like everyone must buy something if they don’t have cash. This is not cool to the customers.
Timmy L — Google review
Even tho it's closed, the guards will let you carefully look around small area and take pics. Really neat piece of history - Johnny Cash was here.

Theaters
The Harris Center for the Arts, located at Folsom Lake College, is a premier performing arts venue offering a diverse array of cultural events. With three distinct stages, the center hosts classical and contemporary concerts, ballets, theater productions, and art exhibitions featuring both local and international talent. In addition to performances, the center provides educational workshops, lectures, and classes for all ages to promote artistic expression within the community.
This was our first time attending the Harris Center. So impressed. Staff was polite and helpful. Not sure if they were paid or volunteers but they were awesome. I brought in a light sweatshirt and was glad I did. The AC was working very well. Parking was provided, it requires a dashboard pass. I believe it is provided with ticket purchase. Since my wife bought the Tix, not sure if it cost extra. This is not a huge auditorium. In fact for the band we saw, Piano Men: Generations it was just right. The band seemed to really be enjoying themselves, audience interaction was high, a very intimate setting. We are planning to attend more events at this venue.
Dan A — Google review
The show was great and every seat in the Harris Center had a good view. The people working the event were cool, opening the doors for you and finding your seat. I went to see Big Mike Hart.
Van D — Google review
What a beautiful arts center. I will definitely be enjoying their Off Broadway season (The line up looks amazing). It's the perfect size to to really enjoy the shows. It feels almost intimate and I'm certain you would have a great view from anywhere in the theater. Shout-out to the Panto Company children's theater for putting on a a fun interactive show.
Twisted A — Google review
Came here to see Shen Yun, plenty of parking, parking was cheap. The tickets were average $140 PP, perfect for folks who enjoys performing arts, ballet and folk tales. The seats were small, with worn cushions, And not meant for sitting for long periods and this show was over 2 hours long. They serve water, coffee and sparkling water during pre-show and intermission. There were no other drink options: No cocktails or wine. Overall it was a cool experience. The Harris center appears to be under construction so hopefully they will update the seats as everything looks outdated. Easy access to restaurants and freeway near by. They feature many different shows here. I hope they would update their menu with more snacks and drinks to include alcohol and better variety. **Don’t forget to follow me on IG for more great places to check out Follow...@Only1ChristineLu **

Easy parking and a nice drop off location for anyone who may have difficulty walking. The facility is clean, seat cushions are pretty comfy and the staff is welcoming and accommodating. The temperature inside is great but sitting under an air pathway it was a little chilly...only because the air was a direct hit. I didnt need one, but someone might bring a light sweater in the summer. We saw the Cinderella ballet and it was a great show, didn't disappoint!
Brett S — Google review
The Harris Center is a fantastic venue for any type of event or ceremony. We recently held our Commencement ceremony there, and the team at Harris did an outstanding job hosting. Everything was well-organized, professional, and seamless. Highly recommend this venue for special occasions.

History museum
The Folsom History Museum in downtown Folsom Historic District offers a glimpse into the area's rich history, from its Native American roots to the gold rush era. The museum showcases artifacts from the 19th century and features a Pioneer Village that recreates early settlers' lives. Visitors can explore a blacksmith shop, miners' cabin, and an old railroad caboose.
It was very interesting to see the history of the town. The two guys that worked on 3/30/24 had so much knowledge and was excited to share it. The only Folsom that one of the workers ever knew about was the guy the town is named after. So once I told him now you know of two and shook his hand, he was pretty excited. Great to see people invest in what they do and not just take up space. They made the visit to the museum so much better. Thank you!
Emery F — Google review
This museum is on Sutter St. Which is the main street of Historic Folsom. You come upon it about one short block from the tram station. It's easy to miss because it's tucked back from the sidewalk and looks like another storefront. This is a great starting point for anyone visiting to see this gold mining town because you learn about how it became a gold mining town, why it was named Folsom, and how it has fared as a city right up to present time. It is very small . The exhibits are very interesting and well presented, and some are interactuve. The difficulty I had, and a contributing factor to my rating, was the difficulty in reading the exhibit placards because so many were down low. The museum shop is small but nice with some interesting objects. Cost is $9 and $8 for seniors. The second factor for the rating was the loud personal conversation that the museum employee had that lasted a good part of my visit. Since the space was small, the conversation was distracting. But, highly recommend going.
Tassey R — Google review
Great escape from the heat. Learned a bit about Folsom, a city always innovating. Great quilts on exhibit.

Nancy is an amazing tour guide! She is wealth of historical knowledge! Thank you!
Patricia S — Google review
I just wanted to thank the amazing volunteers at this museum! I visited today with my 4 young kids, and they had a total blast. The volunteers were so kind, welcoming and helpful. The kids had so much fun with touring old trains and homes, gold panning, pumping water and learning instruments. The kids loved everything and actually learned a lot. Entrance is by donation, which is incredible considering everything the kids got to do. I wanted to write this review in hopes more people will come and support this great place!!!!!
Masako C — Google review
I loved it. Me and my girlfriend went over there and had an amazing time. The place is super interesting! Look at this turnaround for trains! Amazing!
John T — Google review
My family loved the Museum! Perfect blend of Folsom history with interactive exhibits makes for an enjoyable experience for everyone, whether you are a history buff or not. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly. We'll be back!
Troy M — Google review
Great staff, nice amount of historical knowledge. Three also have some time limited exhibitions from time to time besides the main exhibition. It's a small but definitely interesting place to visit! And the cashier lady has a really great knowledge of all they have!

The Steve Miklos Aquatic Center in Folsom is a popular destination for water enthusiasts of all ages. It offers a variety of attractions including water playgrounds, slides, lap pools, and activity pools. The center ensures the safety of its visitors with attentive lifeguards on duty. Additionally, there are spacious picnic areas and a well-maintained lawn for relaxation. Visitors praise the facility for its diverse offerings such as a floating obstacle course, big slides, and toddler splash pads.
Wow. What a place. From the floating obstacle course to the big slide and then to the toddler splash pad, this place has it all! We visited on whim while visiting family and we were so impressed! There is something for everyone. The best part was the staff though. I have never seen more attentive and hard working lifeguards!!! A few scared kids, including my own, needed help getting off the obstacle course. The lifeguard jumped in for my boy after blowing a loud whisle. Within seconds 2 more ran to the side. I mean talk about doing a job right! If you are looking for an amazing day out with your kiddos, this is the place to be. 10 out of 10 would recommend.
Heather H — Google review
My younger child was denied access to the diving board because they were wearing goggles, even though they can only swim with them. The inflatable obstacles were only accessible one at a time, resulting in long, boring queues and no fun for the kids. My younger kid was completely barred from these due to his need for goggles. Another inflatable slide was not being watered, causing kids to burn their bottoms and backs trying to slide down. Neither of my children were allowed on the only slide due to their height, even if accompanied by an adult. It seems like unless you're of the 'perfect' height, you're out of luck. "No running, no running" to everyone creates a stifling atmosphere, like prison. The staff were more interested in performing a ritualistic search for non-existent drowning victims than ensuring actual safety. Watching them obsessively scan empty pools waving there heads for minutes on end was both comical and disheartening. If you shake your head like them for 5 minutes, you'll vomit. The obsession with perceived safety has ruined what should be a fun and enjoyable experience for children. Never again here
Denis P — Google review
First time here and really like it! I loved how clean and well-maintained everything was. There are shaded spots for parents to relax, lots of lifeguards on duty, and fun splash zones everywhere.
Valery H — Google review
Decent pool. Lots of 25y lanes for larger short course meets but it really is a tad too small for events upward of 600+ swimmers. Bleachers are also too short for the crowd standing at the edge of the pool. Surprised at how few drinking fountains are here. Warmup lap pool is very small for larger events. Be prepared to be crowded at larger swim meets. Locker rooms showers and toilets are all good. Location is decent. Next to a larger park. Parking can be a bit of a hassle especially if there is also softball and baseball tournaments happening at the same time.
Michael F — Google review
Love this place , lots of stuff to do and keeps the kids busy for hours . And very affordable. And lots of life guards I would recommended this place

Scenic Railroads
Nestled in California, the Folsom Valley Railway offers a delightful journey back in time with its charming miniature-scale steam-powered trains. As one of only seven public replica railroads in the United States and the sole 12-inch gauge railroad still operating, it has been enchanting visitors since 1970. Hop aboard one of their two miniature engines for a scenic ten-minute ride that spans approximately five miles through a picturesque park filled with lush greenery, serene ponds, and glimpses of local wildlife.
We had a great time riding the Folsom Valley Railway! It’s powered by a diesel locomotive and has plenty of open-air seating. People of all ages can ride the train, which runs smoothly and comfortably. Would recommend for everyone and plan to come back again and again with our infant granddaughter.
James O — Google review
We stopped going because they now charge $5 per person and additional fees if you use a credit card. The train ride is fun for the kids but lasts about 3 minutes. In fact we stopped going to the zoo and this park so we can avoid hearing the train horns.
Albee W — Google review
This is the best addition to the area! Such a great day with the park, library, zoo and the train ride… takes me right back to my childhood riding that thing. And only $5 per person is a steal for the lifelong memories it provides. As a zoo employee now, I always make sure to wave when I walk by because I love to see the joy on the kids faces as they ride, so proudly on the train. I hope this train runs forever. 🥹
Gloria S — Google review
This is the most adorable train! The new owners are wonderful! They even let us ride with our dog! Very affordable, only $5! We had so much fun!
LORI A — Google review
Whether you’re a train enthusiast or not you will love the Folsom valley railway! The owner and the train engineer has been running the locomotive for over 30 years. He says the only reason he does it is because he loves seeing the smile on kids faces. This train is not just for kids and adults and DOGS are allowed to ride. The fare is very affordable and the ride is pretty amazing.

The Folsom Railroad Museum, situated in a vintage railroad passenger car in Historic Folsom, is a captivating destination for history enthusiasts and families alike. The museum is nestled between the iconic Folsom Railroad Depot and the Ashland Freight Depot. Visitors can explore a reconstructed A frame turntable from 1867 and an impressive collection of railroad artifacts, including date nails, lanterns, documents, and maps.
I stumbled on this place by accident. Very amazing and very beautiful place to take pictures. As you walk by it so amazing to see the history of the town. Very cozy place with wonderful sights. Start with the em axing train exhibit and then look at all the antiques. Even the old vines running on the building makes it a very unique experience. As you walk by the train admire the complexity of the build the power and structure of train wheels suspension and well balanced cabin on it is so amazing realizing that this engine was built a good while back. Truly a place I would bookmark and come back to take pictures at.

Awesome place to hang out! We spent the whole evening there and gad too much fun! Very beautiful and historical place. Really nice to walk around!
Stephanie M — Google review
My family absolutely loves this place! It is run by volunteers (often times there are blacksmiths that are given run of the blacksmith shop in exchange for keeping an eye on the place and at times there are docents that walk the grounds to answer questions). A suggested $5 donation is requested, but not mandatory. There is free gold panning that is well stocked with pyrite and other gemstones (the kids love the free gold panning, and free lessons are offered when a volunteer has time). The outdoor museum is filled with historic pieces that the whole family can enjoy viewing such as an old caboose (that you can enter), an old chicken incubator, agriculture equipment, and many (MANY) other items. You can easily run through it within ten minutes, or you can spend hours here. We have been here many times and absolutely love visiting on a weekend (Sunday afternoons are rarely busy, often times nearly empty). Please consider donating when you visit...this place is wonderful and I would love to see it open for future generations.

Great customer service. I wish the prices were competitive for groceries. This place is just too expensive unless they have stuff on sale. Had a bad experience where I bought a pizza that was supposed to be on sale for $9.99, yet since they had no pizzas ready to go I had to get the individual slices. Even though I ordered the exact same amount of pizza they charged me the individual price per slice which came out to $22.00 instead of $9.99. I still think that is insane and have not bought pizza from Nugget since.

The Sacramento State Aquatic Center is a popular boating facility located on Lake Natoma, offering a range of activities and services to the public. Visitors can enjoy boat rentals, boating classes, and equipment rentals for activities such as kayaking and canoeing. The center also features a scenic picnic area and fishing opportunities for those seeking tranquility by the water. Visitors can make appointments online and sign waivers beforehand or on-site.
If you are looking for a place to rent kayaks, canoe, or paddle boards then this place is perfect and offer many different types of options. They give you extra time to get into the water and then they start your time. Very reasonable prices and a very beautiful location! Definitely recommend coming during the weekday but even during the weekend they get you in the water pretty fast. They have many different types of kids groups there during the weekends. The only complaint is the signing in part, wish there was an easier way and a faster way.

Wonderful and quiet place. It was very easy to check in and get the safety equipment and the kayak. The parking lot is easily accessible. I'll be back before the summer ends!!
Denise R — Google review
One of the best experiences I have ever had. I took my nephew sailing. He had gotten his certificate the summer prior and he was able to take me out on a 2 man sailboat, and show me the lake and we had a blast. I love the fact that it's so safe and so secure, and there's so many wonderful people around
Jennifer J — Google review
Plenty of equipment to rent out between SUP, tandem kayaks, solo kayaks, canoes and very reasonable rates. Make sure to create an online account so you can move the checkin line quickly. Sufficient parking available.
Prince P — Google review
One of my easier experiences renting the kayak for a nice day on the water. The prices are reasonable. There is an online sign up required currently. But that was easy too with the cellphone.
Krishna A — Google review
Overcharged a Sac State Student general rates. They don't make clear the rate you will be charged before renting and if you hand over money and realize the mistake they run you around and refuse to give back the overcharge. Vending machines either don't work or dispense the wrong drinks. Dead rats and opossums in the water. BTW. Otherwise a nice visit.
Alex N — Google review
Really enjoyed paddle boarding here, very affordable and many places to sit and have lunch. Well worth the experience
Miss C — Google review
It was super easy to rent a paddle board and kayak, and the lake is beautiful.

Folsom City Lions Park is a popular community space with a playground, baseball field, pavilion, and butterfly garden. It is adjacent to the zoo and offers well-maintained grounds, play structures for kids of all ages, and picnic areas for leisurely afternoons and community gatherings. The park also features an area designed for children in wheelchairs.
This park is amazing! Next to the Folsom Library & natural preserve zoo area. Also make sure to ride the mini train! It's so fun & great for the entire family. The park has a older style parking lot that is a bit of a walk from the park. Park is huge & has a few play structures & walking trails. We always go to the park, ride the train, & to to the zoo...than ride the train again on our way out. Highly recommend for the whole family!
Ajay S — Google review
It's beautiful walks and trails. The riders do go fast so be alert and there is a side dirt trail for safe walking. So many interesting life of God's creatures. We love it here. So much to relax and enjoy and for children to learn.
Melina R — Google review
Great place to walk through. Many different animals. This a sanctuary which makes it all the better.
Kurt K — Google review
I love that this playground has different play structures for all ages. It's also next to a train you can take for $5 and the Folsom zoo sanctuary for $10 per person.
Elle B — Google review
It's a great park! Plus, it's tucked back away from major traffic so you only have the sounds of the zoo...kids...and the like. The big park is fun for dads to play on. The little park is a bit boring for dads, except when you climb up on stuff that "your not supposed to". The zoo is like 7$ a person....the train is 3$ a person. Just a heads up . The library here is awesome too. All in all, it's a great park! Oh, and it is always clean!
Jason A — Google review
We love this park. The animal sanctuary is such a treat to enjoy. They even have tables to bring in your lunch and have a nice picnic. Highly recommend.

Such a beautiful and serene place. The library is fabulous and who doesn't love the toot toot of the Sanctuary Train as it rolls by.

Located in the picturesque Gold Country of California, the Placerville & Sacramento Valley Railroad offers a captivating journey through the region's rich history. Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, this well-preserved railroad provides a scenic and educational experience. Visitors can immerse themselves in the stories of its role during the Civil War and California Gold Rush. The train ride is an interactive way to learn about this significant aspect of California's past.
They go right past all the trails in Folsom. So you can either take a amazing walk on one of those trails or take a ride on the train. (When they open) I love how they are doing this with volunteers!

Great place to watch the homeless migrating every fall and spring. No third track means you can sleep anywhere. Never won a game of chicken...nerves of steel those guys. #goals

Playground
Folsom Kids Play Park, also known as Castle Park, is a popular destination featuring a large castle-themed playground with climbing equipment, swings, and picnic tables. The park is inclusive, allowing children with physical disabilities and challenges to play alongside their able-bodied peers. It boasts two large castle-themed wood play structures and a small enclosed sandbox play area. While the park is still enjoyable, it is in need of repair as some elements are missing or broken.
It's a fun and imaginative playground for kids of all ages! The castle-themed structures are great for climbing and exploring. Clean, well-maintained, and surrounded by plenty of shade and picnic areas — perfect for a family outing.
Mehdi H — Google review
This park is still amazing but is definitely in need of repair. Lots of pieces missing that made this an absolutely amazing playground are now missing or broken. Lots of money in Folsom let’s see some of the money come back revitalizing this park to its greatness. We’ve been coming here for 8 years and is definitely declined. Still clean and lots of fun but won’t be long until it’s not. Missing the big red rope /chain under the dragon and to rope ladders too where there is just a boarded up hole. Still lots of fun but let’s fix this park!
Paul P — Google review
Clean, wonderful climbing structures, shaded areas, easy street parking.
Christine S — Google review
There's quite a bit of decomposing wood/ areas blocked off. However the theme is cute, has lots of areas for kids to have imagination: cops & robbers, Bank, Dragons etc. I saw they're posting to fund and build a new park. I hope they just update the structure and keep the theme/ style the same. Overall, well shaded and so much to do they'll play for a solid 2hrs if not more.
Amie M — Google review
This has a huge playground and a separate area for toddlers/babies. My two boys (ages 4 & 2) had a blast. There are plenty of picnic tables available and the trail was very close. I highly recommend.
Beth A — Google review
The park i think is under construction. Could be a great park if there was a shade over top. It was so hot the kids couldn't play on anything without getting burned.
Jolene V — Google review
One of my kids favorites with novelty appeal; has a fun tire swing, a sand pit for littles that like to dig with separated toddler play structure, plenty of shaded picnic tables, and great for playing "hot lava" (aka 'tag'). The drawbacks would be no bathrooms, poor parking options, and lacking on cool slides.
Christopher C — Google review
I'm 30 years old. This was my favorite playground as a kid. It's unlike all other playgrounds. I can remember actually feeling like I was somewhere else, and loving all the "secret" shafts of the castle. It's not as nice as it once was, but I brought my 3 year old here so she can experience it. She loves it like I did. I hear that they may "renovate" it. Which usually means there is a possibility that may look into cheapening it up with another style like all the others. Bring your kids if you have the chance! Such a cool place. I hope they recreate it as it once was. Even the big modern playgrounds these days just don't compare to the fun of this little castle style wooden park.
