The University of Essex Colchester Campus is situated on the Hertfordshire/West Essex border, offering a picturesque and romantic setting within a landscaped park. The campus houses 16 academic departments/schools and provides guest accommodation with exclusive catering contracts from local caterers. Great place to study . Specially Law and Finance , psychology . Chancellor is an amazing lady . Beautiful surroundings .

Studying at this university has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The professors are highly knowledgeable and approachable, and the curriculum is both challenging and relevant to today’s world. The campus atmosphere is vibrant, diverse, and full of opportunities to grow academically and personally. I truly value the strong academic foundation and the lifelong connections I made here.

This beautiful location hosted many foreign visitors this summer. They went about in large groups and some became a nightmare for other bus users, when the 87 service was crowded. Whilst everyone is entitled to find a seat on the bus where there is space, it's not acceptable to be pushed aside when you are a single, older person. And I was. And not to the credit of Uni coordinators, no one took any notice of my alert.

Visited the arena for my daughter's multi skills festival and I must say it was an impressive arena. Very big and extremely clean. Coffee shop on campus sold a very good latte.

The George Hotel, located in the heart of Colchester, is a 500-year-old inn featuring Roman cellars and traditionally decorated rooms. The hotel offers free WiFi access throughout the property and includes an a-la-carte restaurant and bar. The rooms come with en-suite bathrooms equipped with either a bathtub or shower, along with complimentary toiletries. Additionally, the hotel provides 24-hour front desk services and spacious meeting facilities.
Stayed for 2 weeks on a business trip and it’s been excellent! The service at the reception to the restaurant and bar staff is great! Food is nice and has a nice variety of drinks! The rooms are decent with the odd thing but besides that really nice rooms! I’ve got to say though, because of the location it can get pretty noisy outside but there’s nothing you can do about that!
Lleyton — Google review
Great location in the heat of Colchester and a very old rustic feel to the Tudor oak. Room was very clean, very quiet considering how loud the high street is. A hot powerful shower, air con worked great in this hot weather and fairly comfy bed although not a double but 2 singles put together. All the staff were very helpful and lovely when I had questions regarding parking and driving directions etc. Breakfast was delicious with a small range of pastries, cereal, fruit, juices, coffee/tea and tasty cooked breakfast. The breakfast room and bar are well decorated and lit. I'd definitely recommend!
Crossvisuals — Google review
The room is lovely and well equipt with an ironing board, hair dryer, fan and coffee station. The shower is lovely and the water pressure is brilliant. Our meal last night was fantastic. Our server, Sophie, was very patient, kind and attentive. Our breakfast was also really good. The service was well paced and the food was lovely. There are hot food and cold food options, as well as juice and milk alternatives. Our server, Emily was fantastic and attentive.

We stayed here for the first time visiting Colchester. Location is perfect. Parking is slightly hard to find. However the set up of the hotel and bar area is lovely. We stayed in a suite however we felt the rooms can have been slightly better. Very creaky, slanted rooms. Bathroom was average with lots of marks and stains. Cold feeling. With other hotels around We would not come back. But was ok for location purposes.

Had a great 34th wedding celebration. Me and my husband went for Sunday roasts and we were not disappointed (our daughter tried the brunch). Charlie who served us was very attentive and friendly. Highly recommended 👍and certainly worth visiting again and will try their afternoon tea 😋

Gave this hotel another chance but room was next to the huge fan pipe from the kitchen (80db!) But it is quiet once kitchen closes around9:30. Everything is a bit dirty and worn. Quite nice bar areas but very popular. Car park was full. May be ok at its lowest price as it is on the high street but I won't be back.
Kirk M — Google review
Staff were very friendly. It is a very historic Hotel, if you like that kind of thing it would be interesting to stay there. However, the room seemed overpriced it felt dingy and dark and was too hot. We were woken at 6:00 AM as suppliers unloading goods for the hotel at the front, they were very loud. All of the rooms which face the front would have been affected. When we spoke to reception she said nothing could be done. Feedback to management would be your guests should be your priority, if suppliers are being paid by the hotel then you do have some say over how /when supplies are delivered. Separately, there were a load of people outside the hotel till around midnight. The main reason to stay in a hotel is to get a good night's sleep therefore the hotel did not serve its purpose. We asked for a late check out given the bad sleep we had had, this cost £10, however you need to go down to reception and pay, you cannot do this over the phone or pay upon check out, this seemed unusual and defeats the purpose of a late check out if you have to get up and dressed.
Vanessa — Google review
I’m dropping one star due to the receptionist’s unprofessional behaviour. She wasn’t at the desk when needed and had to be found elsewhere laughing and chatting. When she was asked if anyone was on reception by me, she came over sat on a high stool with her feet propped up on the desk, which again looked unprofessional. When my husband raised an issue about a missing wine bottle at dinner, there was no apology. Instead, he got a long excuse blaming “the system.” When I then fairly pointed out that this isn’t the customer’s problem, she shut me down for being “rude” rather than resolving the issue. Poor attitude and no accountability really let the place down. Get rid as all other staff were good at their job and professional. Either that or take her back of house so she never has to deal with any guests. Ask for a room at the back of hotel as you won't sleep at the front due to being on the High Street...maybe they could invest in secondary glazing. That said the restaurant was great, food excellent, decor lovely and a nice atmosphere (except when she's on reception 😂).

The Brook Red Lion Hotel is a charming inn dating back to 1465, featuring exposed beams and rooms adorned with antique decor. The hotel offers a la carte dining and friendly staff, although some guests have experienced issues with room facilities. Nestled in a historic shopping street, the hotel's proximity to Victoria Yum provides guests with delectable cakes and an all-day brunch menu. Guests have enjoyed comfortable stays in well-appointed rooms, including Room 7 with its replica Four Poster Tudor Bed.
Spent a night here as our 1st night on Honeymoon. The lady upgraded us when she knew. The room was immaculate. The history in the building was stunning. Big bathroom. Lovely comfortable bed. Unfortunately there wasn't much behind the bar but if we asked lady before we got to the bar at 11pm it would of been fully stocked I'm sure. It is a lovely place. Will definitely stay again. Breakfast was lovely too.

Great location, right in the centre of town.i didn't even know about the history of the hotel when I booked it (or the haunted stories). We were in room 2, right over the sign and main entrance. Bed was comfy and soft, all to be expected from a 600 year old hotel. expected it to be loud and noisy as it is on a main street, but right next to our room there was a common room of some sort, there were a group of people playing games, shouting and laughing and they didn't leave until midnight, so if you plan on sleeping, book a bedroom at the back of the hotel.
Ines H — Google review
No door closers on any of the room doors so all you will hear all night is doors from guests slamming. PAPER thin walls. You will hear all of next doors activities with excellent clarity and volume. Staff were polite and helpful. Place was pretty clean. Usual hotel shower, flow rate is about 1 Ltr/hr. Have fun trying to get completely wet before one side of you dries. Toilet was at about a 12 degree angle. Is a novelty to use I guess. It's an extremely old building, mid 1400s interesting history so everything is at a wild angle like the wonky haunted house at the fair. Didn't see any ghosts or mysterious bumps in the night (except from the previously noted bumpings 😉) but met some ghost hunters. Would I stay again? Yes. but with some decent noise cancelling headphones and a bucket with some holes so i could take a decent shower.
Chris S — Google review
Baffled by some of bad reviews here. Room was nice, reception was a polite friendly Asian guy and breakfast was lovely and served by a very friendly white gentleman whose name I didn’t catch. Highly recommended!
Wayne R — Google review
was okay apart from the massive poo stain in the toilet. we let them know immediately that it had not been cleaned at all and they said they would have a look. we came back a few hours later, mentioned it again and it was still there but they had just flushed the toilet. we complained again and they said “guests do this and blame us for it” :3 and we spent the whole night and morning with a smelly pooey toilet right next to us because i ain’t scrubbing someone else’s fecal matter off our hotel toilet. thanks guys
Hannah M — Google review
Avoid like the plague, no pun intended. Woke up next day littered spots all over my chest and back probably likely a direct result of the free vermin I heard shimmering throughout both course of night. I am going to report your build the local also and environmental.
Aaron H — Google review
Do not book this hotel, if you can call it that. Although, this is located in the ideal place. The room and service are not fit for purpose. The room they gave us was more like a squat and the conditions inside the room were a health risk to myself, wife and daughter. Definitely not what was advertised. The beds were just awful, old and filthy. The room itself was shocking. But the temperature of the room was unbearable and dangerous. Couldn’t even breathe properly I immediately went back to the reception to ask for a swap. Explained my concerns. To which they replied it can’t be done. To put it finely, they couldn’t be bothered. We booked the premier in straight away and left. If I could give it zero stars I would have.
John — Google review
One of the worse place i ever been to. Everything was old and not cleaned. The room was full of flees and insect. I can’t sleep at all of all the noises from inside the hotel and outside. And the whole experience is like i’m in horror movie. I don’t advise any person to book it at all !

Nestled in the heart of Britain's oldest recorded town, the Premier Inn Colchester Town Centre (Castle) hotel offers a delightful blend of modern comfort and historical charm. Guests can unwind in stylish rooms equipped with 40" flat-screen TVs, contemporary bathrooms featuring spacious showers, and luxurious king-size Hypnos beds designed for a restful night's sleep. The hotel's on-site restaurant serves up delicious meals, making it easy to refuel after exploring nearby attractions like Colchester Castle and the Natural History Museum.
Jessica (duty manager) and Rachel (in the restaurant) did an amazing job. Jess was very welcoming from the moment we checked in, all the way to us getting a dinner in the hotel in the evening. The place is very clean, the aircon works well. The food is tasty and the meal deal is a great value for money. The place is not far off from the castle which is a must visit. All in all, very happy with the place and I can highly recommend it.

We stayed here for two nights covering a family wedding. Really pleased with the hotel though we didn't try the dinner/evening meal option so can't comment. Had comfortable room, comfortable bed (little bit high for one of us). Rooms cleaned daily if wished which we prefer. The manager is clearly very hands on with the hotel, one minute watching over brekkie (very good btw) the next sorting a taxi for a guest when rhe firm wasn't answering and then clearing up a spill from the floor. The location is very convenient, walkable to the Town Hall for the wedding and also just next to a lovely park All in all a very good stay

I dont tend to give reviews however i stayed for 1 night on 7th october and i habe to say the duty manager that day/night went over and above her role! She was amazing! The hotel was clean and fabulously decorated for Halloween! Please if premier inn read this review can she please have a reward as in my eyes it is well deserved! She had dark hair and nose piercing! She was fabulous

The GOOD * Great location for a city stay. * Once on site the staff were prompt in attention. * Mattress a complete dream. * Shower hot and stylish * Parking on site plus ample extra nearby * Dining area with garden views * Breakfast comprehensive fare: hot and ample THE BAD * Reception never once answered the phone either before or on arrival day * Room size and fixtures VERY basic: enough to make a Spartan cry. * Inadequate seating for a double room * Only one shower towel for double room - Out of country Helpline did not know where Colchester is
Mark M — Google review
The room was very clean and tidy, with the usual extras TV , tea and coffee, extra pillows,AC was a big plus. Unfortunately the water pressure in the shower was extremely low, also some mould around the shower tray also in this day and age I would have expected a soft close toilet seat Would I use again...? Yes of course I would.. the breakfast was amazing thank you chef Brian.....😁
Brian C — Google review
I stayed at this Premier Inn for work from Monday 21st July to Wednesday 23rd July, the location was pretty convenient for me as it was close to the Letting/Sales Agents I was conducting visits with. The food was nice, the room was clean and the staff were very helpful and pleasant. I would stay here again.
Darren K — Google review
Service in restaurant was great and quick. Location is good. However I could not get a good night of sleep. There was a buzzing noise all night through the vents. I kept the AC off and the bathroom light off and this noice just kept vibrating through the whole night. It was awful I measured it at 40 decibels which is ridiculous for a hotel where they promote a good night sleep.
Rk S — Google review
Had a great night's stay here starting off my birthday week great location and peaceful, I didn't hear doors banging or people walking up and down ROB the hotel manager was great and very helpful. I'm looking forward to stay there again next year

Do not go here unless you fancy getting the loudest knock you've heard on your door if your a few mins late past check out and being sworn out and the filthiest attitude and disrespect towards you that I've ever had fair enough I was a bit late but I'd appreciate some respect from The cleaner and the boss they called the police because I was getting ready I couldn't do it any faster I was respectful and apologised I don't get the point in them being like that all they have done is lost a customer there's no issue in being polite rather than screaming at me on the way out offering to fight me what is this world I don't understand people
Lewis — Google review
The booking and check-in process was clear and efficient. Good communication throughout. The room had everything I needed including a fridge, microwave, iron, hangers, towels, tea, coffee etc. Complimentary cold drinks in the fridge were a really nice touch. Parking included at rear of the property. Overall this was a decent room for a fair price.

I liked the place the room was well prepared and smelling nice unlike in the passage where you are welcomed by ciggarettes smell but besides that its a good place to be
Kudakwashe M — Google review
We've just returned from a long weekend away at the Railway Sleeper Lodge. We booked very easily back in June as location and price was perfectly ideal for our needs. Check in was very easy on arrival, car parking spaces are limited however we were already made aware of this via text message before check in and there are parking spaces less than 50 yards up the road. Which was no issue at all with luggage or a sleepy child. Our room was the family room with separate bathroom, on a whole the room was a good size for us, and the added touch of complimentary drinks in the fridge was lovely, my daughter enjoyed the orange juice! And the shower in bathroom was great! You might at times hear the noice of other guests coming and going but you get this in most hotels, including travelodges. So this did not disturb or bother our stay too much. We will definitely be returning in the future as cannot fault the place or accommodation at all. Thank you to the lovely hosts and we will see you on our return!
Chloe J — Google review
Terrible to sleep with the road noise. Plus, the room, linen, bathroom reeks of cigarette smoke. Couldn’t find any sleep. Location wise, middle of nowhere. Reply: Visit now and you’d be surprised with the strong stench of cigarette smoke all over the communal areas, seeping into rooms and the bathroom.
Param S — Google review
Good, clean place to stay. But the rooms are small. If you are ok with that then it's the perfect spot to use as a base. The bricklayers arms just down the road is a great, dog friendly pub for a meal or drink. And it's in staggering distance if the room! Overall well worth the stay here. Especially for the price!

A very small but comfortable room. The bed was comfortable and the room was warm. All the facilities seem to have been provided. The room was quiet except for the fridge which got a bit annoying.

Friendly staff, cosy room with nice quality fixtures and fittings, comfy bed, clean and stylish bathroom and shower area, plus Blaupunkt free view tv, super fast WiFi, tea and coffee facilities, great view from window and exceptional value. Dinner and drink was delicious, so was the full English breakfast. Stayed at Premier Inn previous night with Beefeater menu - and this small village pub is so much better and cheaper too. Ideal place to stay … Highly recommended.

A decent pint of Guinness and not too expensive, a great outdoor space to enjoy the fine weather but a ridiculous bar design that results in a long queue across the pub. Understaffed on busy days so won't return.

Tried to order a mocktail for 17 year old daughter but told needed ID for a non alcoholic drink as there could be alcohol in it - despite being advertised as alcohol free!! When trying to order food using blue light card for a discount, was told could only use it if linked with the Greene King app. Neither blue light app of GK app stated this but she still refused to take apply relevant discount despite all proof being there - felt like they just couldn’t be bothered to serve us

Great dog friendly pub, with excellent food, the staff were excellent attentive and helpful, the pub quiz on the Tuesday was great fun and very well run. The beer garden is also excellent. Over all a great experience well worth s visit.

Don’t book a large group event here unless you want them to completely mess up your booking!!! One of the managers Jodi was very rude and so unhelpful, such a shame as I had previously had good experiences. I had originally booked for 28 people and arranged tables in the outside area. I was told that if I wanted to move the booking inside I would need to ring and email and pay a deposit. To mention also, I was told that no one in our party of 28 people would be able to order food as the kitchen wouldn’t be able to cope (I would like to know if they would have said no to 28 people booked separately ordering food). I then decided to move it to inside, so emailed the correct email address with no response. I also phoned and moved the booking inside which was confirmed on the phone, and at this time there was no mention of a deposit needed for this. After turning up to our booking, we were told that the tables were not available inside because no deposit was paid (no deposit was mentioned on the phone when i moved the booking to inside). I was then told that I should have emailed as this was how they would have requested the deposit if not over the phone, when I showed them the email I sent, I was told ‘ohh this must have gone into our junk’. Complete shambles of a service, would never book here again!!!!

When planning an overnight stay between jobs I found this little gem of a place on booking dot com. Firstly the room, i stayed in no.7, part of the new building. It was decorated and furnished to an amazingly high standard, and was so comfortable. One of the reasons I chose this place was for the desk, I had 2 hours work at my laptop to complete before morning. I had dinner at the restaurant, amazing pub food, fresh and homemade. The Adnams beer was kept well too. Breakfast was equally as good as the dinner, and it arrived pretty quick after ordering. Overall I hope to go back if work ever comes in over in the East.

Best Western The Rose and Crown Hotel is a charming 14th-century coaching inn located just a short walk from the historic center of Colchester. The hotel offers a mix of modern and traditional rooms, all equipped with amenities such as free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and en suite bathrooms. Guests can enjoy dining at the formal restaurant or the Tudor Bar and Brasserie with its cozy log fires.
I had booked a non-refundable stay at but unfortunately had to cancel my trip due to a sudden visa refusal. I contacted the hotel, not expecting much — but to my surprise, their team kindly accepted my cancellation and showed genuine understanding of my situation. Even though I never made it to the hotel, this small act of compassion and professionalism truly impressed me. If this is how they treat guests before arrival, I can only imagine how warm and welcoming the actual stay would be.
Kourosh K — Google review
As we wanted to visit Colchester, this hotel was an option, free parking and at the time of booking free breakfast as well. We arrived early around 10am, you have to register your vehicle and take note the parking is in 24 hour time slots, we were asked if we would be okay leaving by that time if not book in as a day longer. Our room was in the new part of the building, you had to make our way through the old part, which is very old, talk is Dick Turpin used to stay here. Room was clean and tidy, comfortable bed, nice bathroom with good shower over a bath, all the extras you might expect were available. Breakfast in the morning is served on the ground floor opposite end to the hotel bar. We were offered fresh tea and coffee and our hot food orders were made up fresh as well, nice selection of cold options available all in a nice location, they no longer offer dinner in the hotel so you will have to walk into town which is a good 20 minutes and there is a hill to go up before you get there. I would happily stay here again.

Had a lovely stay on Saturday. Beautiful 4 poster bed. Comfortable and huge. Found the room to be relatively quiet, which is exactly what we wanted. Breakfast was plentiful, but eggs and bacon were slightly overdone to our taste. The only criticism I can give is that there were a large group of guests that had been to a wedding the previous day, and they were exceptionally noisy at breakfast. So much so that we ended up walking out before finishing our meal. Might have been more acceptable if the staff had asked them to keep it down a bit.

We had our wedding in Rose and Crown on 30th August. All staff are very helpful. I was getting stress in the morning and the receptionist gave me the assurance that everything is on hand. Communication is great as well during planning. I definitely recommend them. Thank you to Rose and Crown.

We only stayed here for just one night. Whilst the building and history is amazing, the room we stayed in smelt of damp and needed airing. The evening bar was open from 5 - 10.30pm, which was a shame as we went to a concert and got back to the hotel just past 10.30 and couldn't get a night cap, lost revenue for them really. The breakfast was very good and a good choice
Sonia — Google review
This hotel suited me well for a midweek overnight stay with work, with some minor gripes. I found the room a little too warm and the pillows slightly uncomfortable. But the staff were friendly and efficient, the room was clean and comfortable (I suspect it had recently been refurbished), the parking was free and on-site, and the location was good, being a reasonably short walk to the town centre with pleasant pubs and places to eat. I was surprised, with the hotel location, that road noise wasn't an issue, and found the hotel overall full of character and charm.
Nick R — Google review
Unfortunately they do not warn guests when booking that they have wedding parties booked at the same time, hence, we could not get served at the bar and it was very noisy affecting our experience and sleep. Room was fairly tired, but breakfast was good. We did not get value for money with our stay sadly. Very disappointed.

We done my sisters wedding here and overall it was an absolutely amazing day! The lady who arranged the wedding with us was excellent, and the venue dress up was beautiful! The majority of staff went above and beyond! The food was also outstanding! The only issue was with the cake.. we brought a beautiful cake and all of the cake was cut but we did want to keep a layer and then it was quite Literally thrown into a large brown paper bag! I believe this is because the lady we had asked to keep the buffet food had thrown it away which I had said wasn’t really ideal since it did cost quite a lot and we wanted to keep it! I’m only assuming I annoyed her so she chucked it into a bag out of annoyance! as the cake boxes was given to the venue! It’s really disappointing because other than that I’d of given it 5 stars.

The Dragonfly Hotel - Surya Hotels offers casual and relaxed accommodations with an informal restaurant and bar, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi. Guests have praised the pleasant staff, cleanliness, and overall ambiance of the hotel. However, some drawbacks include the lack of air conditioning in rooms, limited availability of menu items at the restaurant, and early cleaning during breakfast service. Additionally, guests have noted that the hotel's location is isolated and may require a car for transportation.
Great place to stay 1 or 2 nights or a long weekend . Rooms are very clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful. I would recommend to others

The staff were exemplary and very helpful. The facilities were excellent and the food was good. The room was well designed but the heating was inadequate and on maximum the room still got down to 16 degrees C. Frustratingly, because it would have been easily fixed, dust had gathered on the feature above the bed to such an extent that grey snowflakes of it would regularly land on the bed. I didn't realise what it was or where it was coming from until the end of my stay.
Stuart C — Google review
I enjoyed my recent stay at Dragonfly hotel, feel like rooms could do with some air conditioning as it was quite hot during the nights especially and was missing a room cleaning or at least taking the bins out in that heat. Breakfast was okay -although quite basic and was missing some veggies and fruits. Apart from that cant really fault anything!
Natalia G — Google review
The hotel is nice, good, and clean, but it needs more attention to small details in cleanliness. It also needs a greater variety of food, especially since there are no nearby restaurants. The hotel is isolated, with no restaurants or supermarkets around, so you’ll need a car or delivery service. The best thing about the hotel is its tranquility.
GM R — Google review
the room was abit small and abit dirty also had a lingering odour there not sure what it was but not very pleasant for my young child who just wanted to get away for the weekend

We have stayed a number of times and it has always been an enjoyable and comfortable stay. The option for a late check out is a bonus too.

Had dinner here on Saturday evening, good value tasty pub style food. Not busy, people probably don't know that non guests can eat here.

I stayed in this hotel for 3 days 2 nights last weekend. I like the design interior and the hotel itself was very clean and neat. It’s not too far from the city centre. The room which I booked was very comfortable. I had a good sleep since it’s very quiet. The breakfast was nice but it could have been better and more varied, rather than just full English breakfast. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, there was only one staff in the reception and restaurant. I had dinner as well but the beef burger (bacon / ham) was sort of overcooked. I should have mentioned it to the staff.

The St Nicholas Hotel - Surya Hotels offers refined and modern rooms with castle views, complimentary Wi-Fi, and breakfast. It is a contemporary three-star property located on Colchester's High Street, directly opposite the George Hotel. Families can opt for the Feature Room, which includes a sofa bed for kids. Guests can enjoy a cooked or continental breakfast in their room before exploring nearby attractions such as the zoo.
I had a deluxe room which was boiling (with the doors open) and a basic fan. The TV was also very basic/old with only Freeview and not the best. I was also next to kind of extraction fan of sorts going off every minute. I've stayed in rooms costing half that which was the same or better

Positives - clean, serviceable, corner room. Negatives - Too noisy with bars, clubs, and roadworks outside. Appreciate the roadworks are not something the hotel can do anything about but would have been nice to be put in a quieter room. We dropped our bags off about 4pm, so although the neumatic drill was dreadful we were going straight out again and knew they'd have finished for the day before we returned. We returned later, only to be disturbed until about 3am the following morning by the nightlife and the drilling etc starting again at 8.30am, Saturday. Also, the room was too hot with no way to turn the thermostat below 19 and couldn't leave the windows open due to high noise levels. The towel rail in the bathroom is dangerously hot, so a good thing it was out of reach of small children, unless you have one who would climb up onto the toilet! In need of a refurb with tatty paintwork, hooks hanging from the bathroom wall, shower door sticking. No staff in this hotel, as check-in, bar, restaurant, and anything else you may want is in the main George Hotel opposite. Minimal tea, coffee etc. Rough bath towels. Lighting poor, so room is dark. Reading light next to the bed only works with the side light on too, so too bright if your partner wants to sleep and you want to read. Would not stay again. Comes as no surprise that Surya hotels have not responded to my review or any others I have read.

Overall a very disappointing stay. I was staying for 2 nights as I had a post grad course at the university and chose to stay more central as I assumed it would be a bit more civilised than staying on campus. The first night I was put on the first floor in room 709. Check in was at another hotel which was unexpected. The room was large however there were stains all over the carpet. It was also boiling hot so I opened windows through the day. It was really loud all evening/night so had to shut the windows however this didn’t stop the noise, it seemed everyone else on my level were partying. There were kids arguing and playing music and also the whole floor stunk of weed. I tried to call the hotel but no answer but managed to get through at around 6:45am. They advised that I can change room but would have to pay £10 to upgrade. I decided to accept. I was put on the top floor in room 910 which was a better room with a balcony but no WiFi. There was a coffee machine but the coffee was horrible so I had to buy my own. Again, the noise kept me up late even with the windows shut. When I arrived back to the hotel there was vomit all over the hallway. I tried to call reception to notify them but no answer. I definitely wouldn’t stay here again, a really bad experience.

The parking is not on site in the way you find at most other hotels that say they have some parking. On arrival could not see any gated parking area or drive-in entrance to the hotel. When we eventually located the George Hotel to checkin we were met by a kind gentleman who we later had to call via the contact number on the website because the room was piping hot and the thermostat control panel was centrally locked, we could not change the temperature and we found out that the rooms on each floor were linked together by the thermostat. We could definitely hear the noise from the rowdy streets and the smoke alarm light kept blinking green throughout the night in combination made it difficult to get to sleep. Booked a Deluxe room and was very dissappointed in the lack of “Deluxe” feel to the room. Stain marks all over the room’s woodwork and the wall with a smell that was difficult to distinguish its origin present all night. The stain marks continue to the bathroom- all over the woodwork again, the bathroom shower glass door was detached at the bottom making it free hanging it was not clean, had large white stain was present on the outside corner, and the shower head needed a clean too, its change of settings button was not working making it impossible to get a decent jet for a proper shower. Have taken some pictures Overall left a whole lot to be desired in terms of cleanliness aesthetics and temperature. controlling. My suggestion is that it needs a good clean, wall-paint touch up, in-fact, an all-round facelift. Really disappointed honestly, definitely should not have booked to stay here!

First thing have to go to the George to check in found out the hard way walking in the rain and then seeing the sign. when i got into room was very warm!! Control panel for air con but didn't work. Had to have fan on all night room was like a sauna without it. Nice shower but shower heads could definitely do with a clean especially rainfall one! Really disappointed the towels had stains on them. Popped to the shop and when I got back key card decided to not let me in my room! So had to walk in torrential rain to get it changed. Didn't get to sleep until silly time! Music booming could here everything outside. Made a coffee this morning after a terrible night sleep and milk separated. Couldn't wait to leave! Definitely won't be staying again

I want to give five stars but a couple of issues prevent me. Positive: - modern and clean rooms - lovely bathroom - fantastic and central location - super comfortable bed - kettle and coffee in room - TV in room Negative: - Really loud. We stayed over on Friday night and the noise from the neighbouring building was insane, really loud nightclub noise with heavy bass - Super hot room. We stayed at the end of August, but it was on the day only 20 degrees, 12 degrees at night. Even at night, the room was terribly hot and no AC available. - Bad experience of leaving behind luggage. They allow you to leave luggage behind but they don't have a separate room, it is kept in a corner of the very busy and popular hotel restaurant/bar, for everyone and the whole world available to steal. - They had WiFi but there was no information in the room about the password. I needed to call reception for this. - In our room, 810, the bathroom towel hanger was dangling off the wall due to a missing screw, making it hard to hang up towels.

Stayed here in February and it was terrible. Had to move rooms twice as the heating was broken. One room was 34 degrees at 2am and when tried calling reception took them an hour to answer. They moved us rooms the next day which had no heating at all. Made a complaint 3 weeks ago but still no reply. Do not stay here the customer service is awful.

What was supposed to be a routine family visit turned into a bit of a logistical nightmare with this hotel. I'm only giving 2 stars as opposed to 1 as I was refunded for my stay. My partner and I arrived for the annual Colchester Medieval festival and were also visiting family in town. I chose this hotel for its proximity to multiple shops in the area. Between this and the polite staff (props to you Joey), this is about the only positive I can give this hotel. The first room we were given had flickering lights and poor electrics. Thankfully the hotel staff were quick to give us another room on an upper floor to make up for such, which in turn had a very nice view. The beds and bathroom are the same as the simple rooms, but they for the most part are adequate. Unfortunately on our second day while out, our keys stopped working because another guest interfered and swapped our room number panel with theirs, meaning we were locked out of the annex entirely as they checked out. The next key we were given wasn't for our room, and this back and forth of retrieving a new right key took another 2 hours to get fully straightened out, though in fairness only one staff member (Joey) was on hand in the evening. While nothing was taken, the anxiety of being separated from our belongings to an unsociable hour was unacceptable. The staff later determined this was a prank, one that for some reason involved us. The whole ordeal meant we did very little sleeping of any kind. Word of advice to the hotel management, have active instead of passive security cameras on site, and don't ignore shoddy electrics in rooms. The upkeep needs some work. And for the love of God, bolt your room numbers so guests can't rip them off for "fun".
