Restaurant
Cafe-Restaurant Zauner is a historic establishment in Bad Ischl, dating back to 1832. It's a popular spot for coffee and cake enthusiasts, offering a wide array of delicious treats including the famous Zaunerstollen with dark chocolate and Chocolate-covered chestnut hearts that are accidentally vegan. While they don't currently offer plant-based milk options for their coffee, the restaurant provides an exceptional dining experience with efficient service and English-speaking staff who add humor to their explanations of the dishes.
An Austrian style place that offers meals but the specialty is actually the desserts. Large selection of cakes and chocolates. A bit hard to choose...

A Hidden Gem by the River – Highly Recommended! An excellent location paired with exceptional service and delicious food made for an unforgettable dining experience. The ambiance was elevated by the gentle river flowing beside the outdoor seating area, creating a serene and relaxing atmosphere. Every aspect, from the setting to the service, was top-notch. I would absolutely love to return again!
Deepak G — Google review
An elegant restaurant & cafe with beautiful outdoor and indoor seating. There’s a wide variety of food, desserts, and drinks, and the service was excellent.
Hazem K — Google review
A beautiful place with a riverside terrace. We had already been to Café Zauner eight years ago, but to the other one in the city center. As it was then a wonderful experience, we absolutely had to try this one. We had coffee, beer and cakes, of course, but the establishment also offers classic dishes, as it's also a restaurant. The prices were a little high, as the quality was excellent, but still not at the same level than Café Demel or Café Central in Vienna. Yet it was the Konditorei of choice for the Austrian emperors in the 19th and 20th century. In short, we had a great time and highly recommend this place for the quality of its cakes, ice creams, coffee, and, of course, its splendid decor (take a look at the photos).
Dan M — Google review
Absolutely would recommend for dinner! We tried a few dishes, lion rabbit, fish, and salad, and each one was delicious. The prices are great for the quality, and every dish was exceptional with a deep taste. The Austrian-style service, but for me it’s perfectly fine, and honestly, it's not a thing when the food is this good.
Sviatoslav P — Google review
I had heard so many good things and received a lot of recommendations about this café, but I was really disappointed. I waited 40 minutes for their famous strudel, only for the waiter to come back and tell me, “I forgot to mention — we’re out of it today.” It completely ruined the experience for me. Such odd and careless service left me frustrated, and I simply decided to leave.
Karam S — Google review
The drinks we ordered weren't tasty. But beautiful view
Google review
Really amazing place for coffee, nice view and top quality desserts. Only one thing was rly odd - desserts were full of wasps and nobody from stuff take them out from them. I've seen a cake which was given to customer with wasp on it. That's disgusting.

Cake shop
When in Bad Ischl, a visit to Konditorei Zauner is a must. This charming pastry shop, located conveniently on the main road near the train station, holds historical significance as a k.u.k. confectionary shop from the Habsburg monarchy era. The elegant Viennese-style cafe offers prompt and pleasant service with English spoken, and their delicious cakes are not to be missed.
Such a beautiful place with very friendly staff and very tasty cookies. We finally managed to eat the real Ischler. We're hoping back tomorrow to buy more as it was so delicious. Thank you guys for your hard work as the place was so crowded. They must be inhumanly popular.
Shabba U — Google review
If you ever find yourself in Bad Ischl, you must stop by Konditorei Zauner for dessert. 🍰 The pastries are as beautiful as they are delicious — delicate layers, rich flavors, and the freshest berries you can imagine. Everything is reasonably priced for the quality, making it an indulgence that feels as good for your taste buds as it does for your wallet. Sitting here feels like stepping into a piece of history (they’ve been perfecting their craft since 1832!) while enjoying pure sweetness. Absolute heaven for dessert lovers!
Hermann L — Google review
A lovely spot! The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, perfect for a relaxed coffee break or a sweet treat. Their pastries are fresh and delicious, and the coffee is rich and smooth. The staff are friendly and make you feel at home. A wonderful place to unwind and enjoy the charm of Bad Ischl!
Sara — Google review
I had some very fond memories of the place and finally managed to visit after many years since my last visit and was excited. The place was packed full with people. Waiters struggled and we waited a long time for the orders to come. One of the older waiters was a bit on the rude side initially pushing customers out of his way when we came in. Later he complained about things (incl. some new coworker) in front of us and I even heard him swear in front of the neighboring table. Total way to ruin the experience. Whatever problems happen behind the scenes, the customer should not be the one hearing about them. As for the interior, it's a bit on the dates side. A place like that can get away with that but I never felt so uncomfortable there as I did this time. The cakes are still top notch and I'd give it 5 stars. We had some of them packed for take away which wasn't done very nicely. Instead of putting them into a sold cardboard box they where just wrapped in some paper making everything stick. When we unpacked it just a little later bits and pieces just came off those nice looking cakes and really ruined it for me. I'm sorry, but I don't see myself ever coming back with service this dreadful.
Roman G — Google review
One of the best patisseries I've visited. They say it's the best in Austria. The place is beautiful and inviting, nicely decorated with lots of space to sit. They have a large selection of cakes. We ordered coffee and the famous Zsuner's Kaiser cake. The coffee was great, the cake was drlicious, chocolate with nuts and marzipan and maybe other things. I enjoyed it very much. Before we left, we bought more cakes to take with us. Highly recommended.
Tovi D — Google review
The place itself is beautiful! In summer, the waterfront is beautiful! Desserts and sandwiches look amazing! Inside the cafe it looks amazing too! Of the obvious disadvantages: the tables are as close to each other as possible, some guests smoke - it's unpleasant, the waiters are not very friendly (apparently because tourists are not regular visitors!).
Maria G — Google review
A stop here is a must when visiting Bad Ischl. Although a table with a street view is preferable, if not available, step inside to the large dinning room in the back. Service is prompt, pleasant, English is spoken. The cakes are absolutely delicious. Aperol spritz is nice and strong. The bathrooms are stunning, all the metal fittings are gold colored, including on the toilet. Credit cards accepted.

(Translated by Google) Since the pasta of the day was already sold out, the friendly waiter recommended the vegetable pasta, and my wife had the Greek salad. Both portions were generous and beautifully presented! My wife would have preferred a pastry or something to go with the salad as a main course, and my spaghetti was a bit bland, but I generally like my food well seasoned. Perhaps they could put salt and pepper on the tables so you can add a little more if needed. We will definitely go back and can recommend it, especially if you want something for lunch – the spot by the pump room is very nice! :)

(Translated by Google) The location is great. It's a pleasant place to sit. The service is also very friendly. Unfortunately, I wasn't entirely satisfied with my salad. It wasn't bad, but it tasted a little bland, and a few of the olives didn't taste quite as fresh. Unfortunately, there was also a hair in my salad. My husband's pasta dish was quite good, except for a little too little salt, but that can be adjusted. We'll definitely be back, especially to try the fresh juices.

Best creamroll I have ever eaten in my life. Everything they sell is amazing, the softness, the crispiness, everything is amazing. The cream is so soft that it dissolves in the mouth. We have been to both their branches, one is in Hallstatt as well. We truly enjoyed eating here. Must visit place.

A must visit place in Bad Ischl and in Hallstatt! Always friendly service and heavenly delicious Schaumrolle and Habsburger cake. We will certainly come back (100 more times)! ❤️

The cream roll is truly the star here. It was amazingly delicious. The cinnamon roll was fresh and warm. And the coffee was a huge compliment to the pastries. I highly recommend this gem 💎 We had to go back the next day to try the custard tart as well and it was just as delicious as everything else 😋

Every time I am in Bad Ischl or Halstatt I make a point to stop by this small establishment and have their delicious custard tarts ! Taste is similar to the Portuguese custard mini tarts but somehow sturdier. Food is 10/10 , however the WAY they handle the food is disgusting and disappointing! They take the money and give you the change then proceed to grab the pastries with the same hands that handled the money!!!!! I went there several times and all the cashiers do the same thing. I asked them if they have gloves and the answer was NO GLOVES!!!! Please change the way your staff handles the pastries !

After reading the reviews concerning great friendly service, we either had a different guy or caught him on a bad day. He was the rudest man I have ever come across, yelled “no food “ at us as soon as we got in. As we were deciding what to order he spoke in German to a customer ( obviously about us ) as they looked at us and laughed. Then our drinks were virtually thrown at us, he picked up a slice of lemon with his fingers and dropped it into my tonic. So happy we’ll never come across him again!!!!

Gerald S — Google review
(Translated by Google) Well, I miss something authentic like that in Munich so much that you can't imagine it. You can tell that the boss and employees are a real team, everyone is authentic, you can still hear the regional dialect, and not to forget: my chocolate croissant and my coffee this morning for €6.10 were really excellent for me! I also took a pack of the so-called TV crackers home, I've tried them a bit and they really taste 1000 times better than what you can buy in the supermarket. I also have a fir tree top liqueur with me, which I haven't tried yet, but based on the diagnosis of the other products I'm assuming that this will be pretty similar. Because of an event in Bad Ischl, I stayed one night in the hotel in the front building, where unfortunately there is no breakfast anymore, but this bakery is a really good replacement. Conclusion: This institution enriches Bad Ischl, and something like that would really enrich Munich too. I hope that something like this will come back more often at some point.

There was also no response to several emails and messages on booking. Then we didn't get an email where we had to go and how to get the key. In the evening we got a call asking why we were there and apparently we had canceled. It then turned out that we had received the wrong key. Absolutely not recommended. Apartment generally very old and not really clean in the kitchen, some spiders in the toilet. Window is pretty broken and can hardly be closed. You couldn't lock the door either, which is why the outside door was open all the time. Long wait time. No greeting while taking my order. After an accidental coffee spill because the waitress tripped there was no apology and I was ignored asking for tissues to at least dry myself off, and still had to foot the bill. I am likely an unlucky case, but it could have been handled much better.

Nice place to sit and enjoy ice cream and coffee. The ice cream we had (chocolate cup and walnuts cup) as well as the coffee (espresso and cappuccino) were OK but nothing special. Service is OK.

Lovely ice cream lady was very polite and friendly

(Translated by Google) In my opinion, this is the best ice cream in the region. I always choose strawberry or other fruit ice cream, and chocolate or nut ice cream. I like that it's not very sweet and tastes natural. For me, that's the best feature of ice cream! Many thanks to the team.

Delicious frozen yogurt. Toppings are too many to choose. Nice people. Must try. Simplicity at its best.

Absolutely amazing frozen yogurt! If you’re ever passing through the city, you must stop here. The flavor, texture, and freshness are exceptional — truly one of the best I’ve ever had!

(Translated by Google) The prices at Dods Bad Ischl are far too high in my opinion. For a medium ice cream, you now pay the same price that included two toppings last year – now, toppings are no longer included; each one costs extra. We paid a total of €22.50 for three medium ice creams, each with two toppings, which I find truly overpriced. The ice cream itself was very good, but the value for money is no longer right for me. I will definitely not eat ice cream here again.

(Translated by Google) Very expensive. I have rarely experienced such poor price/performance. The yogurt and toppings are really good and the quality is right, but that doesn't justify a price of over €20 for 2 people and that in Bad Ischl. Over €3 for the small portion of yoghurt and then come the toppings! I recommend every bakery or café in the area. They are also expensive, but not that outrageously expensive.... (Original) Sau teuer.

(Translated by Google) The ice cream is really great! However, I think the prices are too high. And I also think it's bad that it's closed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
