Meat dish restaurant

The rustic meat eatery Sakaguchiya is known for serving up delicious Hida beef sushi. The speciality here is cooked and served on a rice cracker as a plate, making it an environmentally friendly choice as there is little waste produced. The restaurant itself has an old-school Japanese vibe, perfect for experiencing the unique atmosphere of Hida cuisine.
I had the Hida sushi at Sakaguchiya, and it was absolutely mouthwatering. It was my first time trying it, and the flavors were incredible. However, the price is on the higher side—$9 for just two pieces. While I can’t fully justify the cost since I’m not familiar with how expensive Hida beef typically is, the taste certainly didn’t disappoint. I also liked the unique touch of serving it on a cracker, which doubled as both a plate and a tasty part of the dish. Despite the price, it’s a memorable experience for sushi lovers!

Best ramen in all of Takayama. Great traditional experience sitting at the tables without shoes in the booths. Food and service was fantastic and I would recommend popping in. There can sometimes be a queue so write your name on the board and wait your turn. 5-20 minute wait to get in.
Simon — Google review
The one food item that the YouTube vloggers said was a must-try in Takayama was the Hida Beef Sushi. These self-absorbed, follower-chasing travelers would rave about the tenderness of the meat and then immediately tell me to press the Subscribe button. Alas, it did look like a tasty morsel on camera, and this was the place mentioned the most to get it. Jamie W and I were strolling on Sanmachi Suji, the heart of Takayama's Old Town, when we came upon this spot. While the street was crowded, surprisingly the order window was not. That was likely because they were sold out of two of the three levels of Hida Beef Sushi - the ¥600 Lean version and the ¥1,000 Premium version. That left the ¥800 Medium-Fat version, so we naturally ordered it to share. The long slices of tender-looking Hida beef were slightly seared, placed over sushi rice nigiri-style, and lacquered with a horseradish soy sauce. It was placed on a flat rice cracker with a tiny dab of wasabi on top. It was prepared medium-rare, which was a plus, though the meat was slightly chewier than expected. Still, it was gone in a matter of minutes, and we didn't spend much time perusing the rest of their restaurant menu. FOOD - 4 stars...tender but slightly chewy AMBIANCE - 3 stars...not much atmosphere though they had open seating inside SERVICE - 4 stars...pretty automatic though the process was meticulous TOTAL - 4 stars...Hida Beef Sushi...check!

Its incredible authentic experience. The servis is very friendly. There is wide selection and menu is in English too. One of the best meet we ever had. We took roast beef, its was very soft and rump steak, also delicious.

Another popular spot for Hida beef sushi 🍣 in the area! I came around 4 PM, so the top one was already sold out 😅 Tried set A and premium-fat B — A was a bit chewy, but B was melt-in-your-mouth soft 🤤✨ Tip: eat it right away or the rice might stick to the cracker 🍘 There’s also a small dine-in space where you can sit and wash your hands 💧🪑
Lara S — Google review
Ordered the beef sushi street food set for ¥1,200. Honestly, it looked good but the meat was a bit tough, not the melt-in-your-mouth kind I was expecting from Hida beef. Still decent for a quick bite, and I appreciated that they provide a place to sit inside so you don’t eat in front of other shops. Just not as impressive as I hoped.
Melvin J — Google review
Never pre planned to visit this place just walk in spontaneously. Only after I made my orders then started to read the review and realized this is a popular joint. The interior is very nice traditional Japanese setting. The foods are really fresh and well cooked. Absolutely unforgettable experience! Strongly recommend!

You simply can’t visit Hida Takayama without indulging in the renowned Hida beef! Known for its rich marbling and melt-in-your-mouth texture, Hida beef is one of the finest wagyu varieties, raised in the Hida region of Gifu Prefecture. Its unparalleled tenderness and buttery flavor make it an absolute must-try for any meat lover. During our visit, we had the pleasure of enjoying this delicacy at Sakaguchiya (御食事処 坂口屋), a traditional Japanese restaurant that added an extra layer of authenticity to the experience. The setting at Sakaguchiya is warm and inviting, offering a perfect blend of traditional Japanese decor and a comfortable dining atmosphere. As we sat down to enjoy our meal, we were impressed not only by the quality of the food but also by the attention to detail in both presentation and service. The Hida beef was beautifully prepared, cooked to perfection with just the right amount of seasoning to enhance its natural flavor. Each bite was incredibly tender, and the rich marbling created a luxurious melt-in-your-mouth sensation that left us wanting more. For those who are visiting Takayama, I highly recommend making a stop at Sakaguchiya to experience Hida beef in its most authentic form. The combination of the top-tier wagyu and the traditional Japanese setting makes for a truly memorable dining experience. Whether you’re a seasoned wagyu enthusiast or trying it for the first time, Hida beef is a culinary highlight that shouldn’t be missed.

Takayama Pudding Tei is a must-visit spot for dessert lovers in Takayama. This local favorite offers a variety of Japanese puddings, including the classic custard-based pudding and unique flavors like matcha and snow pudding. The desserts are known for their beautiful texture and balanced sweetness, making them a hit among locals and tourists alike. Despite its popularity, the long queues move quickly, ensuring that the wait is worth it.
Very well executed desserts. We got the original pudding and soft serve. The soft serve was had a coffee like after taste. Almost a combo between soft serve and gelato given how much more creamy it was. The pudding the star of the place, super creamy and rich. There’s no gelatinous texture to it all and taste super milky.
Ray K — Google review
Takayama Pudding Tei is a charming little spot that I recently had the pleasure of visiting. What stood out to me was the incredible smoothness and rich flavor of their puddings. The original flavor is simply divine — not too sweet, with a perfect creamy texture that melts in your mouth. I also tried their Snow Country pudding, which was a delightful variation. The flavor had a unique, refreshing quality that paired beautifully with the creamy base. The service was quick and friendly, making it a relaxing stop in between exploring the city. If you're in Takayama and have a craving for something sweet, I highly recommend this place.

Saw a line when going to the old street. Brought it close to closing timing so only takeout allow. Brought the original flavour and my friend brought the ramune flavor. Both were very good, can taste the richness of the milk in the pudding. Highly recommended!
Vieon W — Google review
The pudding is excellent. I eat the plain one and it has good combination of creaminess and sweetness along with hint of bitterness of the caramel. The line was not too long and there are explanations in english as well. Credit card can be used for payment. 20/4/25

We tried the "snow white" custard, pistachio, and coffee jelly, and they were all great! Even though the shop is small, there's a cosy seating area.
YJ K — Google review
Decent pudding. I visited twice during my stay in Takayama, both times around 4 PM with no line. Unfortunately, the young staff member without glasses was consistently unwelcoming. She took my order both times, and each time she turned her back to me mid-order without a word. Her expression was also cold and impatient, almost as if she was glaring at the customers. Disappointing service that leaves a bad taste.
SN — Google review
Had the matcha and seasonal pistachio flavors. Pistachio was incredibly strong and smooth, while matcha one was intense too but slightly more grainy due to the matcha powder. But matcha one had some red beans thrown in at the bottom, which underplayed smoothness and made the slight powderiness a sensible texture overall. The original flavor and the snowy version are both plain, but with different types of egg yolks. For people who like their pudding plain, you can try both out for comparison.
Shih C — Google review
Wow the pudding is so smooth. It’s so soft - i like this one more than the pudding shop in shirakawa. I tried the navy blue one which is milk flavour - Highly recommend.

The Takayama Souvenir Shop located inside the Takayama Green Hotel is a hidden gem for anyone looking to pick up local souvenirs. It’s surprisingly large—much bigger than most gift shops in the area—and offers an impressive variety of items, making it a one-stop shop for travelers. You’ll find everything from regional snacks and sweets to local wines, sake, and beautifully crafted handmade goods. The selection is carefully curated to highlight the charm and craftsmanship of the Hida region. Whether you’re looking for edible gifts, traditional keepsakes, or something uniquely Japanese, there’s plenty to choose from. One of the highlights of this shop is the experience corner, where visitors can try hands-on activities such as making their own Sarubobo doll (the traditional lucky charm of Takayama) or preparing local-style snacks. It’s a fun and memorable way to connect with local culture, especially for families or those looking for a more interactive souvenir experience. Overall, the Takayama Souvenir Shop at Takayama Green Hotel is more than just a store—it’s an experience in itself. Whether you’re a guest at the hotel or just visiting the area, it’s definitely worth stopping by before you leave Takayama.

Excellent store with wide selection of goods from food, sauce and condiments, sweets, wine, specialty products to souvenirs. Don't miss the craft and activity corner to make your own sarubobo mascot, grill japanese rice cracker or DIY decoratives. Amongst others, bought beautiful hand made Japanese design postcards for JPY40, what a steal!. Highly recommended as 1-stop shop for souvenirs, local crafts and goodies. Fujimiya is a renowned shop located in the old streets of Hida Takayama, offering gohei mochi and mitarashi dango with a traditional stall-like ambiance. The gohei mochi, a local specialty, is particularly famous and is served with a fragrant soy sauce-based sauce. The texture of the mochi retains the grainy rice feel and offers a delightful sweetness.
The kind older woman at this place makes the best soy sauce flavoured dango (salty)I've ever tasted. Maybe it's because I went there during a cold snowy season but it really warmed my soul.

If you haven’t tried dango, come. It’s way better than those convenient store dango. Crispy on the outside and soft inside, full of rice and soy sauce umami.

Fukyuan is a traditional teahouse located in Takayama, tucked away on a small street. The teahouse offers delicious Warabi Mochi, which is soft and perfect when paired with kinako and vanilla ice cream. It also features an outdoor garden with a lovely view. The cafe is known for its delicious desserts such as ice cream, crepes, and parfaits, along with good coffee and matcha.
While they did not serve the pancake, the other desserts are delicious as well! The apple pie was warm and not overly sweet, really brought out the apple flavor. Wife had a crepe and it was just rich in flavor. For lunch, this is a great place to visit. They have food and it was very flavorful as well. Loved this restaurant, staff is friendly and speak a little English but translator is always best to use.

We loved this place so much that we visited twice during our stay — and both times were amazing! We had the crepes and the warabi mochi, both absolutely delicious, especially the mochi with ice cream!! The coffee was great too, and the yuzu tea was surprisingly not too sweet, which was a really nice surprise for me. The atmosphere is so calm and relaxing — the little Japanese garden next to us made it even more special. On our second visit, we sat Japanese-style on the tatami floor, which felt really authentic. The staff were super friendly and even told us about a festival event happening outside so we could go watch it. Overall, such a lovely place with amazing desserts, great drinks, and the nicest vibe! Highly recommend 🌸🍵✨

Loved visiting the cafe, set in a gorgeous house with interior garden to look over. It’s the cutest place. The staff are so sweet and helpful finding me the gluten free options. I ordered the crepe made from rice flour with chocolate and whipped cream. It was delicious! Even my non gluten free boyfriend loved it! 100% recommend coming here.

Cute traditional café ! We had to take off our shoes to enter and we were guided to a peaceful, warm and beautiful room among the many rooms this shop has.

We stumbled upon this quaint cafe in a little laneway and really enjoyed trying local delicacies. Just like when going to someone’s house, we had to remove our shoes. We loved the view of the internal courtyard. The soft serve tofu ice cream was the standout, nutty and rich, not too sweet, with a nice smooth texture. Warabi mochi was interesting too.
Cheryl L — Google review
Fukyuan is a hidden gem tucked away in Takayama’s charming old town—nestled in a peaceful side lane just steps from the bustling tourist streets. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the warmest smiles and gracious hospitality, instantly setting the tone for what would become one of our most memorable dining experiences in Japan. We were shown to a table overlooking a serene central garden—an absolutely breathtaking view. It felt like stepping back in time into a refined traditional home, where classic Japanese architecture meets tasteful modern design. As sunlight poured in through the engawa, the space was bathed in a golden glow, accompanied by the gentle backdrop of soft jazz—it was truly atmospheric. We ordered a coffee float and a pizza, and both were outstanding. The pizza had a perfectly crisp, wood-fired crust that rivaled any we’ve had before. During our few weeks in Takayama, Fukyuan quickly became our favorite spot, not just for the food, but for the genuine kindness of the family who runs it. Each return visit felt like coming home. If you’re in Takayama, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit. And whatever you do—don’t leave without trying the crepes. They’re absolutely to die for. – Ronnie

Anto is a popular spot known for its fluffy okonomiyaki and variety of toppings, such as Nyukawa-yaki. The restaurant offers the option to either cook the dish yourself on an iron plate at your table or have it prepared for you. While there may be a wait due to its popularity, the side menu is abundant with delicious options like hormones and yaki-dofu.
Amazing okonomiyaki but no English menu, however don’t let that stop you from ordering. We asked for recommendations from the waitress and they were absolutely fantastic 🫶 family favourite was the potato salad okonomiyaki with mentaiko. This place uses egg whites(?) as their batter which was why it was very light but it didn’t make you feel too oily. Overall a lovely experience and thanks to the staff for doing their best in translating their menu 😊

Nestled in the charming village of Shirakawago, Shirakawago Purin no Ie, or Pudding House, is a must-visit for food enthusiasts and dessert lovers alike. Renowned for its award-winning pudding, including flavors like matcha cafe au lait and rich chocolate, this delightful spot offers a creamy texture that has won hearts across Japan. While it primarily serves as a takeaway venue with limited seating available right outside the store, visitors can enjoy their treats on-site while standing.
I heard about the pudding from YouTube but I didn't expect it to be this good. The regular custard pudding and the strawberry pudding were the smoothest I've ever tasted, having one wasn't enough honestly. I went in winter surrounded by snow and it was the highlight of my Shirakawago visit! They also had a place to put back your used jars of pudding so the whole place is very clean, despite the large crowds.
Danial A — Google review
This pudding shop in Shirakawa-go is one of the village’s most popular spots, and it’s easy to see why. The shop is famous for its rich, creamy puddings, which have become a must-try treat for visitors. You’ll often find a long queue in front of the store, especially on weekends and holidays, as both locals and tourists line up to get a taste. The pudding itself is silky smooth, with a luxuriously rich flavor that perfectly balances sweetness and creaminess. It’s made with high-quality local ingredients, giving it a distinct freshness and depth that sets it apart from regular convenience-store desserts. Each spoonful melts in your mouth — simple, yet incredibly satisfying. Despite the wait, it’s well worth queuing for, especially if you enjoy classic Japanese-style puddings.

The only one store that has a Very long wueue in shirakawa. I ordered pusding ice cream, taste good with caramel topping on top, suitable for hot weather there. Orderen the purin as well matcha and black sesame. The matcha taste quite similar with other brand matcha purin, but the black sesame is extraordinary. The soft pudding mixed with black sesame paste really goes well, cannot descrive the taste but just try it

When you visit Shirakawago, make your way to Shirakawago Purin no Ie—the famed Pudding House. Renowned nationwide for its award-winning puddings, it’s a sweet stop that’s as charming as it is delicious. There are no seats, and there might be a small queue, but it’s worth it.

3rd place in Japan's pudding grand prix, and what a well-deserved award it was. The pudding is much better than what you'll find in cafes or konbinis. It has a unique look too; a mix of custard and transparent jelly. Just be prepared to queue for at least 15 minutes on the roadside. There is only seating for 5-6 people, and you have to return the cup. So be prepared to enjoy it while standing.
Pandu M — Google review
I went here today Saturday 1st November 2025 while on a day trip. I got the jelly pudding, the transparency is really interesting to look at. It was 460Y they had other flavors too. Line was short as it was raining heavy and there was only a small bench to sit and eat it at. My husband got the custard one which was creamy. Both were delicious not overly sweet and a nice consistency.
MM — Google review
The queue can be very long if you're there over the weekend but moves fairly quickly. Ordered 3 pudding flavors and a soft serve ice cream to go. Everything was perfect, creamy and rich in flavor!
Phitchaya T — Google review
Walking through this village in Shirakawa-go felt like I was inside of a Studio Ghibli movie. Quaint, peaceful, and whimsical in all the best ways. I came upon this little shop and hopped in line for a vanilla pudding that was topped with a sesame nut-butter. I do not exaggerate when I say it was sublime. I know that term is tossed around lightly in the culinary world, but it really was incredible. The sweet vanilla bean pudding (which was more like panna cotta) was light and creamy and it was topped with this salty savory sesame nut-butter that perfectly contrasted for a balanced bite. I will be coming back to this village one day, if not just for the pudding.

A unique Dango shop / cart at a busy junction. The Mitarashi Dango is really soft and tasty, especially well in the cooling weather of autumn. Very popular among tourists and locals. Seems like many will not hesitate to buy while they wait for the green man to cross the road. 🤣

Nothing beats eating hot, warm, grilled dango on a rainy day. It was so soft and yummy. These were only 100 yen, which is roughly 0.76 cents.

(Translated by Google) I visited Takayama City's tourist attraction, the Old Town, around 1:30 PM for a post-lunch snack. My goal was the mitarashi dango (sweet rice dumplings) from Jinya Dango Shop, beloved by locals and tourists alike. The surprising price of 100 yen per dango is appealing, but the flavor is even better! Rather than the typical sweet mitarashi sauce, these dangos are flavored with a "non-sweet" soy sauce. The well-browned dango is fragrant, and the umami flavor of the rice that spreads softly and chewily in your mouth is a perfect match with the fragrant soy sauce. The size is perfect for eating on the go, and one dango is so delicious you'll find yourself ordering another one. Thank you for the meal!

Chateraise Takayama is a unique gem in Japan, renowned throughout Asia for its locally crafted pastries. The patisserie takes pride in creating seasonal delicacies and offers a wide array of delectable treats, including the highly recommended green tea cake and caramel custard pudding available in two sizes. Visitors can indulge in an assortment of cakes, breads, and local desserts, making it a worthwhile stop for anyone with a sweet tooth.
Surprised by the diversity of products offered here, they sell fruit cakes, milk ice cream, frozen products such as pizzas, beef curry, and also wines. It’s more than just a pastry shop, it’s a high-end grocery store. Chateraise is a confectionery company that started in 1954 with a small shop in Kofu City. The name “Châteraisé” is actually a romanization of the company’s Japanese name, which is “シャトレーゼ”. It’s also a combination of two French words: “château” and “cerise”. The name was chosen to evoke the image of a castle surrounded by cherry blossoms, which is a very appreciated image in Japan.

Loved it so much we had to come twice! Best melt-in-your-mouth beef we had. Wagyu Hida beef is the real deal and this restaurant does not disappoint. Recommend to also take the generous cucumber salad to balance with the delicious meat.

Decent place at the center of Takayama. Food was good and the meat was fresh. Not on the cheap side but I guess normal for having a quality local Hida meat.
Rosen K — Google review
I had some delicious Hida beef at this cook-your-own-meat restaurant. The beef was extremely tender and full of flavor. I preferred the taste to the also tender and delicious other Wagyu beef I ate in other parts of Japan. The servers were very friendly and helpful. I thought cooking my own beef was fun the two times I did it but I didn't go out of my way to experience this again. As with other restaurants that served prime quality beef, the meal wasn't cheap (¥3400) but the quality of the beef made it well worth the expense.

Everything about this restaurant was amazing. We struggled to find a restaurant that had place for us, but this one let us in with a very warm welcome. We got seated in a separate room with wooden floors and table, which had a classic Japanese vibe but was still comfortable. The food was delicious, but the menu wasn’t in English and was handwritten which made ordering slightly difficult. The woman serving us was very kind, asking where we came from amongst other questions. Definitely recommended here!

I was nervous because I didn't have any advance information, but I chose fried chicken from the many lunch menus. Hagama-cooked rice (about 3 bowls worth of shiny and shiny rice), handmade tofu, miso soup made with Shinshu barley miso, moderately sour pickles, and raw eggs for egg-cooked rice. The main salad was fried chicken (with tartar sauce), and the dessert was homemade yogurt. The fried chicken is freshly fried and piping hot. The rice was freshly cooked and shiny. Tanimatsu is a renowned store in Takayama, known for its delectable bean sweets made with care and without any additives. The candies come in various flavors such as sesame or peanuts, striking the perfect balance of sweetness and crunchiness. Visitors often find themselves unable to resist buying more after trying them at the Miyagawa Morning Market or the main store.
(Translated by Google) The store is located at the very back of Miyagawa Morning Market. Although it is closed irregularly, it is run by the fifth and sixth generations, and has a history of 130 years. It's very popular with overseas customers, and there's always a crowd. We recommend black sesame, white sesame, and roasted peanuts. We recommend you to try it casually. (Translated by Google) On a trip with my mother, we went to the morning market and there was a tasting at this shop, so I tried some. It was so delicious that I bought three sesame and three peanut sweets. The shop staff were also friendly and we had a great time chatting😊 When we returned to the inn, the staff saw the paper bag and said, "The sweets at this shop are delicious. What's different from other shops is that the candy doesn't stick to your teeth." 🥰 By the way, even though they use starch syrup, they were crunchy and not sticky, and really delicious. After returning home, I ate a little at a time, but they were so delicious that they were gone in a flash. I regret not buying more. 😢 If you go to Takayama, I definitely recommend you visit the shop😊✨✨ (Original)

I was surprised when I got to try the Genkotsu! ️It's not hard. And I was surprised that it wasn't sweet at all and didn't stick to my teeth. ️When I was there, the owner came to explain. Good explanation and customer service🤣🤣🤣 I bought two types of genkotsu because the taste was delicious✊ After that, he suddenly said that our store doesn't mainly serve Genkotsu, but rather Kokusen😱😱 What is that? I tried the kokusen and it was delicious😋😋😋I bought 3 types🤩🤩🤩 They say they make everything by hand and don't add any unnecessary ingredients, and if I recall correctly, they don't use wheat flour or anything (I forgot). Coffee Don in Takayama is a charming, old-school cafe with a soulful atmosphere and personal touches in its decor. The toast is described as crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, complemented by dark roasted coffee that pairs well with it. The cozy ambiance, accompanied by jazz music, adds to the experience. Visitors have praised the delicious treats and drinks, such as cheese onion toast, chocolate cake, and perfectly prepared coffee.
A magical place in the center of Takayama. A tiny place with amazing coffee, background music and atmosphere. Very friendly staff, always with a smile and good small snacks. We went there every single day for the full duration of our visit in town. Highly recommended.

This cute little café's best quality is it's amazing owners. Food quality was great, don't get me wrong, but their attentiveness was next level. Tables standard have Japanese menus, so we tried to work with that using Google Lens, but once the lady found out, she came running with some handwritten English translated menus. She checked in on us many times and even gave us a little gift when we left. This is peak Japanese hospitality and if you want an experience next to good food, this is the place to go.

Incredible. Kind, polite staff. Sandwich and cheesecake were simple but excellently crafted. Vienna coffee was so yummy but idk what was in it 😅 we went twice in two days because we were so blown away. Atmosphere is kinda old school French, but more wabi sabi? Cozy. They even gave us a gift of pastries. Gochisousama Deshita!

Before reading I want to say I never write reviews. This place is so good and the staff was so welcoming and warm I just had to write this. We came here after travelling from Kyoto to Hida-Takayama to eat some lunch. When we got inside we all got a warm feeling and felt really welcome. The host was welcoming and when we got seated they gave us warm towels to clean our hands. The food and drinks where delicious! I got a caramel cappuccino and a onion cheese toast. After paying our check the staff even spoke some Dutch to us since we come from the Netherlands! The day after we went again and even got a gift when we left! I would recommend this to everyone that comes to Takayama.

What a little gem of a place. Very good coffee and such welcoming staff. Wish we had of found it sooner... rather then on our lay morning in Takayama. We loved the ambience and the little biscuits served with our drinks. The hot lemon drink was delicious. After leaving the waitress ran down the street after us to give us some free biscuits... what a treat and so kind. Highly recommend this place.

A lovely family run small cafe. Service was so thoughtful and attentive. Great to see the team working together. Been in service for over 75 years! Food and coffee was perfect. Toast with cream cheese with honey & pepper was so tasty. Very reasonable prices too! Hands down 100% better than a Starbucks!

I wanted to really love this place, i had checked reviews and seen mainly positive things said about the service, plus I love crepes, darts and metal music (there were metal posters and a guitar on the wall) but my fiance and I got engaged today and went out for a celebratory drink and sweet treat after dinner and it felt as if the guy did not want us there at all, the crepe was delicious, but I would not return or recommend this as we just felt like a nuisance and finished our food, drink and single game of darts as soon as we could so we could leave. Really disappointing.

Delicious crêpes with fresh, seasonal fruits (hida peaches) and a human touch! They also served us an amazing floral tasting sake (ask them for suggestions!). Super cool place with kind owners who spoke english and made us feel really welcome 🥰 While we were there, two little girls were being taught the art of crêpes-making, super cute and warming moment! ありがとうございます^_^

You must go in and try their crepes or some of their wines or beers. The owner was very friendly and spoke with me even though my Japanese isn’t very good. Saw all the good comments here about the owner’s friendliness but not sure why we got that kind of service. Rough night? A little bit disappointed.. No crepe menu inside the shop. Tucked away in the vibrant Takayama Old Town, Kissako Katsute is a charming café that might easily be overlooked due to its understated presence amidst more heavily advertised spots. Once you step inside, however, you're greeted by a stunning interior that beautifully blends traditional and modern aesthetics. With seating options both downstairs and upstairs, it offers a cozy retreat from the bustling streets outside.
May 2025. The mochi accompanied by their special cream was exceptional. The counter seats by the window overlooking the main street was cool, but the lighting in the shop was a little dark. As the air conditioning wasn’t very strong, it was slightly humid and hot. Nonetheless the food was amazing.
Skydew — Google review
A lovely cozy vibe where you can admire the beautiful traditional architecture, and a great rest stop amongst the street of shops. As for the food though, I was disappointed by the matcha which tasted too bitter and grassy (for 800yen, I have higher expectations for the matcha). The warabi mochi was good, and my friend got the cheesecake which was firm and only alright.
Mei F — Google review
Honestly the best warabi mochi I have had in a long time. I ended up ordering it twice. The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is unique - a blend of tradition and modernity. A gem on its location.

The warabhi mochi with cream was absolutely delicious—especially the whipped cream, which I loved the most! The cookie was also quite good. This spot is perfect for relaxing and unwinding after a long day. Great environment and friendly service. Highly recommended!

This was such a delicious and nice cafe. The traditional yet modernized interior paired with the wagashi and matcha tea set was absolutely enjoyable. The atmosphere inside was relaxing and was a nice getaway from the bustling streets. The dessert was so delicious, I had to hold back from ordering another set. I would love to come here again. This little traditional cafe was worth the stop.
Rain — Google review
Very warm and cozy traditional interior cafe. It is a very good resting spot after walking rounds and rounds along the street. The matcha 🍵 is not much. It seems like it can be finished by one mouthful. But we try to sip bit by bit. The matcha taste is strong and slightly bitter but it taste perfect after the cookies that they provide.
Hazel Y — Google review
Atmosphere is impeccable, but the service could have been better. We entered in a group of nine, right behind two other guests, but instead of giving the two guests seats at the counter they took them to the big table and asked our group to split up in two as there were no other big tables left. Not a good first impression. Anyhow, my recommendation for visitors would be the warabimochi and matcha green tea set.

Harada Sake Brewery is a charming traditional building that has been producing sake for 160 years. Located in Takayama, a city renowned for its sake production, the brewery offers a wide variety of Japanese sake, including Junmai and Daiginjo. Visitors can purchase a cup with the brewery's logo and sample different types of sake. The brewery also offers tours of its facilities and the opportunity to taste seasonal and award-winning sakes.
You can try all their different sake for only 500 yen! Place is amazing, cannot miss it if you’re in Takayama!

Great value for money! I love the reusable sake souvenir cup you buy for about 500 yen and self-pour style to try different sakes. I would have liked a chance to learn more about the brewery and sake produced, but there was very little information. Unfortunately there were so pushy and unruly travelers, so please be respectful and patient!

It's ok, but whole ambience was spoilt by the wannabe sake connoisseurs standing in front of the tasting fridge. Staff were polite but transactional with no one promoting the large selection of sakes.
C.H L — Google review
Amazing sake shop with an option of sake tasting which you get the sake cup. Great sake selection and other products that have sake. Enjoy your sake in their mini lounge and try their Gashspon machine to get a nice shop surprise.
Carla S — Google review
Huge variety of sake available for sale, you’ll be spoil for choices at this brewery! Best part, they have sake vending machine for you to sample which is probably the highlight of this shop. Quite fun as you can go around sampling any type with just the token. If you love sake, do change the token with ¥1000 note so you actually get extra. Perfect for the winter weather too, we went in from the sudden snowfall and gust. The sake just gave us the extra warmth we need.
Derrick T — Google review
This is such a great stop in Takayama. You can taste all of their sake by paying 200 yen (you can keep the cup), but if you're a cheapo, just go to the counter and just point some bottle and said tasting. They will give you plastic cup, and will offer you any sake you want.
Elizabeth T — Google review
What a lovely place! So many sake bottles to try! For only 200yen they give you a cup and they direct you to a fridge of 11 bottles of sake to taste without supervision, please be respectful and try one of each which you will see it's worth the tasting price and on top of that you can KEEP the cup! They also have delicious sweets and sakekasu which would be amazing on bread or a rice bowl.

A lovely place with a nice & friendly owner. We were given some sample to try before we buy anything. The owner was enthusiastic in sharing with us the ingredients used although we can see that he struggles a little when speaking in English. I only get to try 5 wagashi as I went late & most of them were sold out. I would have wanted to try Daifuku strawberry… Overall the wagashi tastes good, not too sweet & can taste the flavour of ingredients used to make them.

The friendly owner makes amazing Japanese sweets and they taste great. He offered us tea and small samples of his current available sweets when we walked in. Sadly the strawberry daifuku was sold out when we arrived but the others were also tasty and the texture of the mochi is soooo soft! Will definitely be back for the daifuku. Must visit if you are in the area.

We saw a picture of pretty Japanese confectionery sweets and thought we wanted to try this. This shop does not disappoint. A very warm welcome from the owner, Kenichi Michida. When we entered, he was busy with another customer but didn't fail in welcoming us and giving us a seat with a small sample of the sweets he sold and tea to compliment the sweets. He carefully explained what ingredients the sweets contained. You could see he is passionate about what he does, and this comes back in the taste. It was amazing and we took some sweets with us. Totally, I can recommend getting the strawberry Mochi and, of course, his signature Sweet chick Mochi. The little chick was almost too cute to eat. But the taste was superb, soooo soft not to sweet! Perfect! Also, we got ourselves another sweet to take home. Kenichi explained you can save this sweet until a month because it was vaccum sealed. However, when you open it, it's fresh for 1 week if you keep it refrigerated. He even gave us a free sweet on the go. It was a matcha pudding type of dessert , and I loved it 🥰 When we were about to leave, he asked us if we had lunch. When we said we didn't, he recommended a few places. It was great advice. When we come back to Takayama we will visit again! Thank you again, Kenichi!☺️🥰

This place was beautiful. We sat in the shop and the owner was extremely friendly. He gave us things to try and advised us on places to eat in Takayama. We ate mochi. Green mochis tasted like something healthy and tasted delicious. Mochis that looked like little chicks and some with grapes. Everything was so delicious that we even took them with us for our hike and ate them at the top of the mountain. Thank you for the nice stay.

Bel Ange is a delightful spot to unwind after exploring the charming streets of Takayama. Nestled within the Takayama Green Hotel, this cozy café features a bright interior that offers lovely views, especially during the stunning fall foliage season. Although there was some construction outside during my visit in November 2020, it didn't detract from the experience inside. At Bel Ange, you can indulge in an impressive selection of over 15 types of cakes displayed beautifully in their showcase.
(Translated by Google) After checking out of Takayama Green Hotel, I left my luggage at the front desk, and then my wife and I used this room on the first floor of the hotel. The interior of the store is deep and faces both the passageway inside the hotel and the plaza in front of the hotel. The inside of the store was bright and the view outside looked nice as it was the fall foliage season, but the hotel was currently under construction (November 2020) and there was a barricade in front of us. As a countermeasure against the coronavirus, alcohol hand sanitizers are placed at the entrance and exit, and the four-seater tables along the walls are arranged so that they are not facing each other so that they can seat two. This charming shop offers an array of delectable desserts, including the adorable Sarubobo-shaped ice cream that comes in flavors like milk, strawberry, chocolate, and matcha. The unique jelly-like texture makes it a fun experience as it wiggles when you take it out of the bag.
Fantastic cakes.

I love Baumkuchen! 🍩 the shop have a variety of them. But the interesting ones are too big for me to consume immediately. So I bought smaller ring. It was taken out from the fridge and I have to wait 2 mins before consuming. The taste is quite normal. Taste like ordinary Baumkuchen. The staff is very nice. She try her best to communicate with me.

(Translated by Google) 2 and a half hours by car from Nagoya I went to Hida Takayama, where the old townscape still remains. ・ After finishing lunch, I went to the store I was interested in. ・ ◉Sarubobo ice cream 500 yen (Milk, strawberry, chocolate, matcha) ・ A new specialty of Hida Takayama! Sarubobo-shaped ice cream is cute♡ Because it is made of agar, When you take it out of the bag, it will shake. ・ The ice cream has a jelly-like texture. It's so smooth. ・ It doesn't melt even in the heat, so it's perfect for eating while walking. ・ in the same store A sweets brand originating from Hida Takayama ・ ◉Takayama Plain Baumkuchen 1100 yen Standard and gentle vanilla flavor ・ ◉Miracle half-boiled! Raw Baumkuchen 1600 yen The most popular product. Using carefully selected eggs Just like it was made using a unique manufacturing method. The texture is like a chiffon cake. ・ ◉Takayama Mini Baumkuchen 240 yen (Vanilla, chocolate, tiramisu, salted butter, coffee, matcha, banana, matcha tiramisu) There are 8 types, so you can enjoy various flavors. Enjoyable and perfect for souvenirs and snacks. ・ Take out Baumkuchen Ichii Ittobori, a traditional craft located along the river. Too bad i don't live in takayama & had a taste of the butter pound cake & was hooked. Its rich without being oily, a slight buttery fragrance, soft yet firmly chewy. It was frozen & had to wait for it to thaw & but was out daily sightseeing & only had d chance to eat it 3D later but it retained freshness. Proprietress was real helpful.

Japanese confectionery shop
Went to this shop in April 2024 during our stroll in the old town. The shop was small with not many seatings available, but the lady was so nice to us, even with my choppy Japanese. The 2 cat manjus we got were very tasty as well. Will go back there if given a chance.

The shop's atmosphere is small and elegant, and the colorful and cute lucky cat manju attracts tourists to enter the store. Daofengen specializes in innovative wagashi. In addition to the eye-catching Nekoko steamed buns, various snacks such as Swiss cake rolls, mugwort steamed buns, Kashiwa mochi, and daifuku are all delicious. The sign in front of the store said that they were presented to Prince and Princess Akishino, and that they sometimes sell out in the morning. As a kintsuba lover, I couldn't resist these words! I couldn't help but go inside the store and buy them immediately. 290 yen each, the kintsuba was really subtle and delicious without any unpleasant taste. If I had to say something, I think it would have been better if the sugar on the surface was a little crispier. If anything, the surface was moist. The soba manju tasted normal. The kusa manju was a beautiful green color, and it made me want to eat sweets. lol There was one last kintsuba left, so I bought that on my way home. Both the soba manju and the kusa manju were 180 yen. It's located in a shopping district near Takayama Station, and they have a lot of fresh fruit to give as gifts, including bottled 100% freshly squeezed juices, freshly squeezed juices on the spot, and 100% freshly squeezed juices with fruit pulp in them. Jelly was also sold, and the couple was making it together. My wife had a green smoothie and I had a mango mix.
