Amazing place! My partner said the meat was great and I had finally a proper vegetarian option and experience- the vegetarian Hoba yaki was soooo good and so fun to mix! We walked by yesterday when people were waiting in line so we came right when they opened today so we didn’t wait at all!

Even though the queue was super long (we almost gave up 😅), the Hida beef here was totally worth it — truly the MVP! For those who don’t eat beef, don’t worry — they also have really tasty pork and chicken options too. Everything was full of flavor and well-prepared. The staff were also very nice and entertaining It’s definitely worth the wait! If you come right after the restaurant opens, be prepared to wait around 2 hours. Fun fact: the staff will come out to check how many people they can still accept. If you’re the last group they can take, they’ll give you a card or paper to show others — basically saying, “Sorry, we’re the last in line!” Such a thoughtful and organized system.

Great Hida beef experience We tried both sukiyaki and charcoal-grilled yakiniku with Hida beef. The meat was very tender and flavorful. Service was excellent, staff were friendly and attentive throughout the meal. Prices were reasonable considering the quality. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

Best ramen in all of Takayama. Great traditional experience sitting at the tables without shoes in the booths. Food and service was fantastic and I would recommend popping in. There can sometimes be a queue so write your name on the board and wait your turn. 5-20 minute wait to get in.

The one food item that the YouTube vloggers said was a must-try in Takayama was the Hida Beef Sushi. These self-absorbed, follower-chasing travelers would rave about the tenderness of the meat and then immediately tell me to press the Subscribe button. Alas, it did look like a tasty morsel on camera, and this was the place mentioned the most to get it. Jamie W and I were strolling on Sanmachi Suji, the heart of Takayama's Old Town, when we came upon this spot. While the street was crowded, surprisingly the order window was not. That was likely because they were sold out of two of the three levels of Hida Beef Sushi - the ¥600 Lean version and the ¥1,000 Premium version. That left the ¥800 Medium-Fat version, so we naturally ordered it to share. The long slices of tender-looking Hida beef were slightly seared, placed over sushi rice nigiri-style, and lacquered with a horseradish soy sauce. It was placed on a flat rice cracker with a tiny dab of wasabi on top. It was prepared medium-rare, which was a plus, though the meat was slightly chewier than expected. Still, it was gone in a matter of minutes, and we didn't spend much time perusing the rest of their restaurant menu. FOOD - 4 stars...tender but slightly chewy AMBIANCE - 3 stars...not much atmosphere though they had open seating inside SERVICE - 4 stars...pretty automatic though the process was meticulous TOTAL - 4 stars...Hida Beef Sushi...check!

Its incredible authentic experience. The servis is very friendly. There is wide selection and menu is in English too. One of the best meet we ever had. We took roast beef, its was very soft and rump steak, also delicious.

I came around 4 PM, so the top one was already sold out 😅 Tried set A and premium-fat B — A was a bit chewy, but B was melt-in-your-mouth soft 🤤✨ Tip: eat it right away or the rice might stick to the cracker 🍘 There’s also a small dine-in space where you can sit and wash your hands 💧🪑

Ordered the beef sushi street food set for ¥1,200. Honestly, it looked good but the meat was a bit tough, not the melt-in-your-mouth kind I was expecting from Hida beef. Still decent for a quick bite, and I appreciated that they provide a place to sit inside so you don’t eat in front of other shops. Just not as impressive as I hoped.

Never pre planned to visit this place just walk in spontaneously. Only after I made my orders then started to read the review and realized this is a popular joint. The interior is very nice traditional Japanese setting. The foods are really fresh and well cooked. Absolutely unforgettable experience! Strongly recommend!

Wonderful spot for hida beef in Takayama Old Town. We were there just in time when it was open and there was no wait. The beef grilled on oba leaf was phenomenon. Do yourself a favor and don’t miss!

It’s been a wonderful experience to walk through this morning market, pacing slowly enough to enjoy the culture and people. The fruits are fresh. The local people are polite and friendly. I went very early in the morning at 7:00am therefore there aren’t too many people, making it an even better walk. I recommend going early and spend an hour to 90 minutes here. Then sit down at a coffee shop nearby for morning tea and wait for the other shops to open.

The Miyagawa Morning Market is one of the most well-known morning markets in Japan and a popular stop for visitors to Takayama. It’s located along the scenic Miyagawa River, creating a pleasant atmosphere for a morning stroll. While the market is charming, it does feel more catered to tourists than locals, with many stalls selling souvenirs, snacks, and street food rather than everyday produce. The market street itself is relatively short, so you can easily walk through it in about 15–20 minutes. That said, it’s still worth a visit for the lively atmosphere, friendly vendors, and the chance to sample local specialties like Hida beef skewers, fresh fruit, and traditional sweets while enjoying views of the river.

I visited the Miyagawa Morning Market around 7 a.m., but most of the shops were still closed and many vendors were just setting up their stalls. I realized it’s probably better to come a bit later, so I went back again around 8 a.m. By that time, more shops were open and the market felt livelier. There were stalls selling food, plants, and various souvenirs. It’s not a very big market, but it has a nice and relaxed atmosphere. I think it’s a good place to walk around in the morning if you’re staying in Takayama and have some free time before noon. Coming a bit later than 7 a.m. would be better if you want to see more shops open.

There is free water, sake at the lobby at specific time. Some traditional snacks are available as well. Parking space is enough and I can get a slot in front of the hotel. Two public onsen which you can use if its not occupied. The is no clear instruction to customers that there is no bath cleaning facilities in it including water and soap. I cannot imagine how many of visitors jump into it without bath, thus I did not enjoy it much. The bath facilities information can only be found in the TV bath usage information page. I take bath at room before going to onsen. It's strongly suggesting post the message in front of the onsen and brief it from the staff as well. As not enough one know this practice before going to onsen. The renewal room is large at 4th floor, you have to get 1 stair up without elevator. The room is packed with beds, tables and chair and not much free spaces. The in room onsen is wonderful and keep yourself private.

It’s an ok market, didn’t find it particularly interesting or appealing, but they sell some nice stuff along with the usual souvenirs for tourists. It’s strange because everything shuts downs at noon and the city becomes almost like a ghost town. Apparently some of the items the vendors are selling are made by the wives of local farmers, so look for handmade things and not souvenirs that seem to be made in a factory, that should help the local community better. Also, as tourists, it’s not always easy to buy fresh produces, as you’re probable going to be on a bus for a few hours with no way of preserving food, so I didn’t personally buy anything to eat here.

We loved the vibe of the market. All the locals selling their homemade goods and fresh fruits in the morning was something I wish I could see in my town every day. We tried getting small samples and sharing them so we could taste everything the market had to offer, which was the best decision. Definitely bring cash and enjoy the atmosphere and all the homemade goods.

4 star overall for Center4 hamburgers. The burger itself is great, classic hamburger, uncomplicated, with lettuce tomato diced onion mayonnaise and mustard. Toasted buttery bun, and the patty is fair in size. The fries are nicely cut potato fries, not classic string fries, though the portions of fries that come with the burger were a little small. Service is good, slightly on the slower end from what we've been accustomed to in Japan. The cheese burger and fries cost us 1400¥, without drinks. We came for lunch, and we waited 30 minutes at 1pm. We showed up the evening before at 645pm and they had already sold out of burgers, we were quite shocked and a bit annoyed but still decided to come back the next day. This place definitely needs a reservation.

Love it! The building has Americana vintage decor and collectables / beer bottles from all over the world. We had the cheese burger, hamburger and the hida burger. Short wait on a weekday - it's only a small restaurant with only two tables for four people available. Recommend - the patties and fresh tomatoes were absolutely amazing. Simple but so good.

Honestly, there not enough good things to say about this place. Extremely kind and hospitable; as we have found everyone in Takayama. As a couple originally from the U.S. but living in Western Europe for the last few years, this place was so refreshing to visit. The burgers are on our top 5 all time list and you can’t find a pickle like they serve here anywhere around our current home. Get the Hida Burger and a side of pickles! Thanks for everything :)

Came here with a group of friends for dinner and can’t say enough good things about this place. The owners were very kind and food was great. The onion rings were great even by American standards and the burgers were great too. We also loved the eclectic antique decor. Highly recommend coming here if you’re in the area!

This is the number one place I would suggest to go to in Japan, not because of the great Japanese food but just as an alternative to it. This is the kind of place that makes traveling worthwhile—a genuine hidden gem that offers something special beyond the usual tourist circuit. We arrived without a reservation but were warmly welcomed and accommodated with a table. The staff’s hospitality was excellent throughout the evening. The restaurant has a distinctly unique atmosphere for Japan. The owners ask guests not to take photographs, which seems to be about preserving the intimate character of the space, an approach I found quite refreshing. The burger itself was outstanding. What impressed me most was the restraint: no elaborate sauces or gimmicks, just exceptional execution of the fundamentals. The bun was perfectly textured, the meat cooked precisely right, and every element worked in harmony. It’s the kind of dish that demonstrates real skill through simplicity. An excellent meal and a memorable evening. Highly recommended if you’re in Takayama.

There was a long queue at 5 (right before dinner service), however the crowds dissipated as the night went on. We all got different variations of the dandan noodles, mine was specifically the deluxe (?) kurokawa dandan noodles. To be honest it's a little overrated. The broth was very salty, even for ramen standards. As much as I liked the portion size and the toppings, it was difficult to stomach.

We reached the restaurant 15 mins before lunch opening time . There were 8-9 people ahead of us in the queue. 10 mins before opening time, a staff steps out with the menu card and takes the orders. This reduces the wait time inside and service is pretty quick. Most people finish eating quickly and I saw most finishing the Veges/meat/noodles and eggs but leaving the broth behind. We also could not finish the broth. The choice is between sizes and eggs/no eggs with spice levels. Menu is otherwise the same. Freshly prepared and served. Liked it but wouldn’t rave about the food

This is a nice small restaurant serving their famous ramen with curly noodles and soy sauce broth. The taste is light, and the noodles are tangy and delicious. This ramen is one of the best tasting one here in Japan, where every prefecture has its own unique serving and taste of this dish. Certainly a ‘must try food’ if you are visiting Takayama City. Come early and queue outside if you wish to avoid the long queues after they open, cos there are only 3 seating tables accommodating 4 diners each and a short bar counter sitting 6 diners.

This was the best ramen I’ve had in Japan! With a fish allergy it’s been hard to find broth without dashi. Thanks to their soy milk broth I was able to enjoy a spicy bowl with pork (you can also get it as a vegan dish). My husband had a different broth but also agreed it was the best ramen he has had in Japan. The perfectly jammy eggs, so many toppings and being able to customize your spice level… so good! We came back twice when we were in takayama because it was just that good. Go in off times if you’re worried about a line, but the staff are very efficient and keep things moving if you do sit and wait.

Best ramen in town, with the friendliest people. Sometimes you will need to wait a bit in line, but do not worry, it goes fast. Next day we wanted to go back but they were sold out so we had to go across the street for some ramen, and the difference was BIG. I would recommend everyone to go to this one, 1000x tastier! For the ones that look for Dutch/German reviews as we tend to complain a lot, there really was nothing to complain about ;)

We went there at 6pm on a weekday and already seen groups of people waiting. One could write down the names on waitlist. 23 names in front of of us. We waited though did not hv much expectation. Finally we got our table at 7:10pm. Suggest to wait there instead of going away because the staff don’t speak good english. U need to pay full attention to see if they are calling u. We went in a group of 8 and ordered sukiyaki and yananiku. Meat in good quality at reasonable price. Kids love the rice and beef so much too! Parking available outside. But a pity there there s no high chair for babies.

This is a must try when you are in takayama! Beef is top quality with a very reasonable price tag. There are two branches in the town so if one is full, feel free to walk to the other which only takes 10 minutes if not less. Get the best beef if you can. I think you will need to pay triple the price for the same meat if you are in the States.

Exceptional hida beef! Melts in your mouth. Decided on shabu shabu and a beef don. Just wow! Trust me, it’s good! We only had a 2hr stopover here, half an hour spent waiting for table, 1hr eating... guess I’ll be back again, hopefully soon!

Maruaki has 2 shops. When we were there the sign board said fully booked for lunch. When I asked whether we can wait to get a seat, they let us in. We managed to get the seat for 6 just a short wait. So just ask even it said is fully booked. The hida beef is of top quality. We ordered 2 types one is grilled one is with miso. Preferred the grilled one.

We ordered the Hida beef with miso set cooked on magnolia leaf, A5 sirloin, and a seasonal vegetable with magnolia leaf grilled miso set meal. All were delicious. The Hida beef was especially high quality and grilling over the charcoal grill was very satisfying. The setting is traditional Japanese style, quiet and cosy. The chef personally came out to greet each table, which made the experience feel even more special. Parking is available, and we made a reservation through their website.

We wanted to like Kyōya given the high ratings but didn’t really enjoy our meal here. The hoba miso beef was way too salty for our taste. Our Hida luxury set came with two different cuts of Hida beef, one was good and the other was tough and chewy. If you look at the attached photos, the marbling in the beef we got wasn’t great. We tried Hida beef at another restaurant the next day and enjoyed it much better there. Staff spoke good English, and meal was served quickly after we ordered. Restaurant setting was nice.

Ajikura is a popular yakiniku (grilled meat) restaurant in Takayama, so it’s best to go early if you don’t want to wait in line. We went for an early lunch to avoid the crowds, and it was much quieter at that time. The restaurant offers convenient iPad ordering with multiple language options, making it easy for visitors. They have a few lunch sets that are reasonably priced and good for a quick meal, though the beef quality wasn’t as impressive as expected—perhaps because we chose the lunch set rather than the premium cuts. Overall, it’s a nice spot for an easy yakiniku experience, especially if you visit outside of peak hours.

Taking the queue 10 mins before the restaurant open after they opened for about 10 mins the queue was already fully booked without accepting any new customers for the rest of the dinner. Waiting in queue for about 1.5 hours for the seat of 9 people table of 5 and 4 people. The service was very incredible and easy to order through the tablet on the table. The beef is the best we have in Takayama compared with other restaurant similar style. Price on the otherhand were quite expensive but you get what you paid for a well deserved 4 stars for my great experienced.

The waiting system doesn't seem work very well when all the customers aren't japanese and they call your number in Japanese only. So you will definitely miss hearing your number calling. Two workers are the cashiers/waiters and who serves your table. Beef grill set is pretty good. Pork belly also recommended.

We went there around 5:15pm to get the queue ticket and had to wait around 1 hour. However, we could walk around the area and check the queue via QR code. If your queue is called and you do not show up, the restaurant will skip your queue. The queue tickets were all taken around 6pm. We had to choose between sukiyaki and yakiniku and we chose yakiniku. The highlights for us were sirloin steak and Hida beef galbi, which melt in our mouths. They were not too fatty or too dry at all. Vegetables especially onions and bell peppers were sweet. Unfortunately, beef tongue was sold out. The meal was worth our money and it was a fantastic experience for our first day of the trip. We will choose this restaurant again if we go back to Takayama.

Excellent Hida Beef. We ordered loin cut and fillet steak. Line up early! We came 515pm to line up. Had our table at 535pm. Finished our dinner at 635pm and then saw at at 7pm the restaurant was already closed. Either the lines were too long or beef sold out.

The restaurant has a nice and cozy atmosphere — it’s small but very clean. The staff were welcoming and spoke English well, which made communication easy. They were also flexible and helpful throughout the meal. The food was good overall: the fish was fresh, the tempura was crisp and not oily, the Hida beef was delicious, and the uni was not fishy (though also not particularly sweet). However, the portion size was quite small compared to the price. It felt expensive for what you get, and I actually had to get some ramen afterward to feel full. Also, the chef mostly spoke Japanese and not much English, which made sitting at the counter a bit uncomfortable.

The chef was super friendly and welcoming! The bar on the first floor was packed with travelers from all over the world, and speaking English was no problem at all. He was especially kind to us as Taiwanese guests, and kept thanking us for the friendship between our two countries — that really touched me. I’m so glad I came across such a warm and inviting place! The Hida beef steak was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and went perfectly with a cold beer. The sushi was also really unique — super fresh ingredients and very reasonably priced. This is a follow on review from the sister restaurant which was too full to take us, but went above and beyond getting us a table at this restaurant. First up they went out of their way to accommodate us and get us onto a table despite us having a wheelchair (dad can walk only a little, but managed to get up their stairs. If you're a wheelchair bound person, this is not the place for you for accessibility). Because of the inconvenience of turning up unannounced with no reservation and being redirected, they gave us a free plate of the most amazing beef sushi which I would frankly fly back from England to have again. The menu was more limited than we expected but the food was amazing. The total cost for us was ¥35,000 about £175 at current exchange rates. This included a plate of beef or tempura, 8 hand made fresh nigiri, a bowl of miso soup with crab claws in & a small dessert. It was excellent. Everyone was very friendly despite the amount of inconvenience we put them to and their English was excellent. You will need to take off shoes (so wear your best non holey socks), it does have mats. Downstairs tables are sunken "floor" tables and the upstairs are western style but low seating.

Great place for fresh sushi and Hida beef! The staff were incredibly accommodating — even though both this restaurant and their sister location were completely full, they kindly made room for us. They let us know we’d need to finish within an hour due to a reserved party, which we appreciated. MUST TRY if you are in the location. It was the best sushi food we had so far in japan. Tuna was definitely the best, yellowtail and other fishes were so good as well. Our waitress sayaka was very friendly and she even gave us list of places to visit in this town.

Best sushi in whole of Japan!! We stumbled upon this small sushi joint in 2018 and had an unforgettable sushi experience, flawless execution of sushi classics but what stole the show is the uni chawamushi (Sea urchin steamed egg). It stuck with us as a core food memory ever since. Finally we had the opportunity to come back here again after 7 years in 2025, chef loss some hair but the sushi's quality is as great as we remembered. We will be back again! Btw Matsuki sushi is child friendly too.

Do not go here if you're a foreigner. They segregate you to the top floor in a grey, undecorated room. Truly insane prices for not great food. Soup was OK, tempura was good, sushi was actively bad. They just tossed a bunch of fish together and wrapped it poorly. Tasted like nothing. Menu did not describe the contents of the sushi, which was so strange. Staff were nice. Huge waste of money, but we learned our lesson 🤷‍♀️ I was mostly mad that airbnbs and hotels are clearly colluding with this place. 1,000+ reviews for a restaurant here is weird.

This restaurant was highly recommended by the hotel staff. We were a little worried initially as we saw several bad reviews on Google, but so glad we gave it a try! We were seated upstairs where it was quieter, and the service was wonderful. We ordered the premium Hida beef set and the beef was amazing. Sake tasting set was perfect with the beef. The sukiyaki is another standout dish, featuring a perfectly balanced sauce that complements the sweetness and richness of the beef. It’s comforting, flavorful, and beautifully prepared.

Had a satisfying Hida beef meal here. We made a reservation for lunch on a weekday, though it didn’t seem like we needed to as it wasn’t too busy. The beef marbling was great. Our Hida beef set 105g came with 2 different cuts - one tasted as if you’re eating just fat, and the other was more balance. Sukiyaki was also nice, but you won’t be able to discern the beef quality as much. The sides that came with the set were good too. I really enjoyed the salad and the steamed egg. Yuzu liquor was very smooth and easy to drink. Apple juice was lighter and more fresh compared to regular store bought ones. Overall the meal was a bit expensive but was worth it. We were stuffed walking out. Service was good. Staff spoke good English and even offered to take photos for you. The only con was that you’ll walk out smelling like beef and smoke. The restaurant was conveniently connected to Funasaka brewery where you can shop for sake and other souvenirs after your meal.

We did a day trip to Yakayana and want to make a reservation for dinner. But the closest day available was two days later. We walked around in the old street area and walked to the restaurant by accident. The restaurant has been operating for 200 years. We ordered two Hida-beef sets, one 105g, and the other a premium set. The beef was amazing. They melted in our mouth. The services and environment were also great. Highly recommended if you are visiting this area.

Hida beef has a delicate texture, and when boiled or grilled, it doesn't release any blood or have a typical beefy taste. Paired with delicate side dishes, it's definitely worth trying for visitors.

Really good buns, the quality is really good, the price is what you should be paying I believe, they will be a bit more expensive than what you can find around yet they are worth it. The place has also a space inside where you can sit down if you want. There aren't many types of bun, two or three if I remember correctly, yet they are all very tasty!

Great welcome. Super kind staff. Really good price and quality. The only place since we arrived in japan that they serve real and delicious matcha ice cream until the end of the pot.

A michelin bib restaurant that lives to its reputation. The soba and soup has been perfected through the generations. Balanced, aromatic, and with great texture. Even the tempura can rival other tempura shops that I've been to. It is just perfect, and you cannot go wrong with any order They are very accommodating and mindful of us. They offer a traditional interior that is homey even if they are located in the middle of a town center. The restaurant will not be out of place if they are located by a stream at a mountaintop

Amazing. Totally blown away. Yes it is more expensive than your typical soup bowl in Japan. Quality over quantity. Pickles are a really nice side to complement and recommended. Our group got an extra order of cold soba to split between us, some preferred the cold but I preferred the hot. Service takes awhile but there is just one chef in the kitchen. I'm not a huge fish fan but the tour was fantastic and ate the whole fish.

Cute little restaurant that was featured in the michilin guide back in 2019. They offer cold/hot soba and udon. One of the remaining restaurants that was open late afternoon for late lunch. The hot soba was so comforting for the cooler weather. This is a cash only establishment.

Cozy little soba restaurant - the broth was light and flavourful and the vegetables alongside soba were earthy and wholesome. The soba ice-cream was exquisite. Really warm interiors with rustic wooden tables - went here for dinner on repeated days. The old grandma handling the orders/serving and the cook are both delightful :) thanks again!

The place looks pleasant and traditional. However, the person who served us wasn't rude, but rather ill-tempered. I think if he's in customer service, he should be more friendly. Besides the fact that the food isn't great in general, it tastes good because of the meat, but the croquettes are very greasy and lack sauce. The only thing I recommend is the meat skewers.

Lovely pit stop for hida beef sushi and skewers on the way back to the train station. Chef was warm and friendly to us, and was even calm and even tempered in front of unreasonable tourists. If I had more time, would have definitely gotten a beer and enjoyed more hida beef!

A family run restaurant ( husband and wife ) , a very small but cosy place. You feel the warmth of the place. The husband is the chef and it’s a great one. All the food you order he makes it in front of you. Just awesome. Mind blowing gyoza 🥟 ( they have 3 kinds of ) and all the rest of the menu was super super tasty. This included appetizers, soup , main dish , dessert , gyoza and some sake and yuzo. Maybe our best meal on our 3 weeks tour in Japan. Very convenient price also. A highly recommended place if you are in Takayama. Pay attention ! You need a reservation because the place is tiny ! We made it 3 weeks in advance. By the way , all the food what is served is a traditional, house made food. You won’t regret it.

All in all it was a wonderful experience. Amazing gluten-free food (which is hard to find in Japan!), and the lovely couple were so kind and funny. Definitely recommend going here. You must make a reservation. It’s a set menu for 4000yen (including drinks) - the experience is worth much more in our opinion. Lots of love from Denmark 🇩🇰 🦢

One of our favourite and most memorable meals in Japan! A delicious set menu with Japanese style Chinese dishes that are cooked with care and warmth from the husband, while the wife prepared, hosted and served. The duo were entertaining and so so lovely, and we felt right at home, as if our parents were preparing our dinner. We chose the sweet and sour chicken and the mapo tofu for our mains, and were treated to a bonus serving of sweet and sour meatballs (so yum!). We would go back and highly recommend making a reservation for those visiting!

“Japanesey” Chinese food. Really great meal, the best I had in Takayama. The husband and wife who run the restaurant are incredibly kind. The set menu includes a drink, Japanese appetizers, gyoza, a main dish, and a desert. I had mapo tofu with pork, which was delicious. Then the chef brought out a sampling of the sweet and sour meatballs, also delicious. All around a fantastic experience. You will not regret visiting here. Reservation required.

This was our favorite meal/experience in Japan! Great for us vegetarians as well. We loved the food, the atmosphere, and especially the fabulous couple who were hosting, cooking, doing everything! They are such special people and we are so lucky to have been able to eat here.

We were looking for an affordable place to try Hida beef and this restaurant more than met those expectations. Meat is incredibly high quality and you can grill it exactly how you like it. Served with himalaya salt, ponzu sauce and other toppings. Service is great, sometimes the fire under our grill went out, but you simply press the button and someone is with you within a minute. Recommended to reserve, but absolutely with visit here again!

We didn’t have a dinner reservation in Takamaya and this was the only place that seated us right away. The hosts were amazing and the food was sooo good. The ramen with a side of beef which was incredible was so cheap I couldn’t believe it. I thought something might be wrong with it but it was actually really good haha. The ramen itself wasn’t anything special but still great. The beef and rice were amazing and I wish I could have ordered a big bowl of just that. The Kobe beef was also delicious. If you are in the area definitely give this place a try.

My worse meal in 23 days in Japan. Not a good experience. Hot plate meal not recommended here- they make you cook the meat on paper! Not good! I ordered the hida beef loin on hot plate and it was a disaster. I'm giving it 2 stars because I believe the meat was fresh. The salad and Miso soup were also decent, but I didn't come here for that- I came for the meat! 1st negative- they require you cook the meat on parchment paper. WHY? You can't get a sear on it that way. It's like steaming it, verse hot plate cooking it. It also takes the veggies sooo long to cook this way. When I asked why, I was told because the meat would stick. Then I asked if all restaurants in Takayama make you cook on paper and she said NO, ONLY HERE! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2nd negative the hot plate was brought hot but not lit, with no fire. When I asked, he said yes it's hot to cook. So as a 1st timer here, I started. 10 minutes later and the meat just turned gray-ish not brown. Knowing it should be done, I tried it and it was raw. Finally someone came over and said, "oh there's no fire" and lit the small burner. 🤦🏻‍♀️ So, I continued to then "cook" the meat, but as mentioned it was more steamed in texture and taste. Not pleasant to eat and took very long. Then half way through, the small fire went out and I had to call again for a new one. Negative 3- I ordered loin bescuse I prefer lean cuts, which in the picture also looks very lean, but was given pieces with lots of fat that were not loin. Negative 4- after I asked about the paper, I told the waitress I wasn't happy with the cooking, she shrugged and walked away. I still had most of my meat and veggies left. I wish she would have offered a different cooking method to fix the problem. Very disappointed, especially because they were not busy and could have made it better. I do NOT recommend this place for hot plate beef!

We were rather late looking for some decent restuarant after long day sightseeing. This one had a very good menu presented outside so we decided to give a try and got in line (with a ticket machine:) After 10min of waiting (few couples before us) we got inside and were quickly surprised by the way how it's arranged. Each table is located in a spearate box so you have a full privacy there. Ordering system is very clear and effectivie with a buzzer on your table to call service any time you need. Food was absolutely amazing and serviced with a speed of light. There was literally nothing to complain about including prices. Fully recommend this place.

The food is good and the beef is so tender. However, the restaurant was catering to 2 tour buses, which meat that they opened up later to everyone else. They didnt turn on the ticket system until 6:30. I sat in the waiting area from before 6pm and watch the queue build up. It is recommended you start queueing up in this situation.

Unfortunately I would not recommend this place if you have other choices around. While the restaurant was not very busy (about barely half full), you still needed to wait outside as the staff were too busy in the restaurant to serve you. It took about 10-15mins for them to come take our order and about another 30-40mins for the food to be served (we are just 2 people and did not order anything elaborate). While the food was okay, it was quite expensive for the amount in this area and the ramen was not great at all. The staff were still quite friendly but some do not know English so recommend using a translation app to make any communicating easier.

Never had beef sushi in my life before this. Was really delicious. Yummy!! In my opinion, it’s a must try when you are in Takayama. No seatings but then again why stop when there are many other food to try along the street.

What truly elevates this dish is the preparation: the beef had a distinct and wonderful smoky aroma (perhaps from a light searing or torching) that pairs perfectly with the rich texture of the meat and the seasoning. It's a small bite, but a huge culinary experience! Highly recommended for a unique and delicious treat.

Love love Hida Beef! The texture was *chef's kiss* and tasted so good. I especially loved the Order X with the premium cut and the Gunkan with the creamy egg. The beef was soft and cooked medium rare which considering the thin slice and the flavor of the meat itself, I would say is the best doneness. But well I love my steaks medium rare so, it was perfect. The garnishes + sauce was not too overpowering which made the beef flavor shine. It was a great touch using shrimp crackers as "plates" to hold the sushi. Nice palette cleanser in the end as well. Prepare for a line especially if coming in during peak season. They also post signs if in case the items are low in stock or limited, but if you can come by in the morning or after lunch. But this is no guarantee. Must try if you are in Takayama and will definitely buy again when I come back.

Best beef I’ve ever had in my life. Very nice indoor seating area. Fast and efficient service.

We only had the pork ramen and quite enjoyed it so our review is based solely on this. I eat a lot of ramen at a variety of places and I think this place is definitely in the upper portion of restaurants. We came during lunch and went straight in, no queueing. The jazz music was quite lively and added to the atmosphere. I would say, on a cold snowing day like today, the ramen definitely hit the spot.

This is the lowest food rating given in Takayama. We had basically enjoyed everything that we tried in Takayama except this one. For a town that specialises in Hida beef this is really not up to mark. The beef is tough and not juicy. Fried rice was not fragrant too, it’s a bit too oily. The presentation and the location of the shop really attracted most people including us…. Verdict: please try other places

We did not know its low rating but went in because of the attractive photos outside. It was full when we were there too. The food was, to be fair, okay, for the price. The flavour wasn’t impressive. At least it’s not bad as some of the reviews mentioned in the past.

Despite of low rating (2.8 by the time I came) I decide to dine in and warmly greeted by the Waiters. Just to anticipate, I order one of the “cheap menu” Hida Beef Rice Bowl which cost “only” ¥750. And the Waiters behave changed all of sudden. Maybe because we’re 2 and only order one menu (as a trial). Taste was so so but getting better after I add chili flake. Location is very good and the atmosphere also quite nice.

I was fooled by the long line. I came in to taste the traditional Takayama ramen. Unfortunately, it was not good. You can see from the picture that the noodles are not homemade but instant. The broth, it did not have the complexity of regular homemade broth but instead the flat and plein 1 industrial flavour.

i am not sure for some underrated review as my experience here are all nice. The food are great... ramen is perfectly cooked with tasty hot soup... not to mention the well known slices of Hida beef... tender and still gives the beef authentic taste... The portion is just nice... not too much for one person, yet not too little... The beef rice bowl is in great taste and composition too... although the interior is showing the old era of Japan, the light jazzy music makes an enjoyable meal time here... The staff are attentive and giving a clear explanation of the food we asked. A must visit place again in these coming days or next visit

I’m a very polite and nice person normally. But this restaurant is very disappointing. For other travellers benefit. I really need to speak out. This is the worst food I ever had around here. We are late at lunch time around 2:30. This is the few only restaurants still open. However, the food is very bad. The fatty cow sushis’ meat is tender and hard. Those on the street is even better than this restaurant food. The ramen is too salty with a few pieces of thin meat which cannot distinguish is was local cow or just normal cows. The worst thing is the Don( the rice box). I definitely can sure it was pre-cooked. The meat is hard and cold. Some rice is not yet ready. We have six persons with five boxes. All the same with no exceptions. Tender meat and unready cold rice. This is fast food standard but the price is not Charging fast food price. We are all very disappointed. The lowest star can give is one star in google, otherwise we prefer to give a zero. Totally unrecommended. And please don’t bet any luck may appear.

Had the Hida Beef Rump Steak 🥩 delicious Set Menu. It came with a pumpkin soup which I enjoyed. Afterwards I was served the steak which I personally enjoyed. The meat did not have a lot of fat, it was juicy, easy to chew, and tasty. I personally would come back here again!

This charming French bistro is run by a husband-and-wife team, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The service was friendly and attentive, with the owner even going out of her way to move her car so we could park conveniently next to the restaurant. We opted for the set menu, which included a salad, pumpkin soup, steak, and dessert. The pumpkin soup was outstanding, and the Hida steak was truly exceptional.

It was a magnificent meal that I won’t forget. The steak was perfect and the sides were fantastic. Also, really enjoyed the local sake they had on the menu. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. Would recommend if you’re in Takayama.

Excellent restaurant, delicious food and lovely owners, highly recommend Don’t be put off by the website as doesn’t do the restaurant justice. Perfectly cooked Hida Beef steak, all other dishes delicious too, we had the chicken, steak, fish & pasta, as well as sides of potato chip fries & caesar salad and blueberry tart for desert. Can’t go wrong with selection. Tastes as good as if I was in France. Owners very nice and good English, ended up chatting with them at the end of the evening and very nice!

We ordered two sets of beef rice. Roast beef bowl was delicious. The half and half Mabushi was interesting combination of tastes. Darker version beef was tasty for some but salty for others. However, you should mixed it with the hot soup (in a jar) provided for better taste control. My son found a small and tiny piece of plastic wrap on the half rare beef and the staff was quick to respond to replace with a complete new bowl! Excellent customer service at its best.

Tourist trap. During lunch time, they only have the beef bowls which aren't that good. I got the roasted beef bowl and my husband got the grilled one, both were disappointing, the side soup is super salty. They have a booth on the left, where you can get beef skewer at ¥1000 ea which was way better than the beef bowls.

Came here around 11:30 and was very easy to get a seat whilst the other tourists are busy with the sights. Has the half lean and half mabushi- which tasted very good. You can eat it in a few different ways including with bone broth (there’s a qr that you can to give you instructions).

I had the roast beef bowl. The beef is very raw and it’s top with a raw egg. I think it’s tasted average.

The Hida Beef Bowl at Y2,500 was good and filling. Serving is big. At 11:30, I did not have to line up and service was fast.

We enjoyed an extravagant dinner Takayama's famed Hida beef! We booked reservations in the afternoon as we understand that all of the restaurants in town book up very quickly and you do not want to find yourself without a place to eat dinner! We ordered lean, fatty, heart, tongue and pork belly along with one bowl of oxtail soup! Every dish was superb in its own right but some of the highlights include the fatty beef, tongue and pork! The exhaust fans are quite powerful and do not leave you smelling smokey after the meal. Ordering is fairly simple with their digital keypads and they have the menu in both English and Japanese. A reasonable price for for an exquisite meal!

We chose this restaurant based on positive Google reviews but were disappointed by the overall experience. We felt rushed, with our plates being taken away frequently, and were eventually told we had overstayed, despite being there for only 1 hour and 15 minutes with a quarter of the restaurant still empty. Additionally, the cleanliness was concerning, with crusty salt on the table and a mouldy water refill container. While we could have overlooked these issues, the quality of the beef, which was the main reason for our visit, was very disappointing. We ordered 400g of A5 loin beef, but it was unfortunately chewy and fibrous. The charcoal was also little, and it took us a while for us to cook the meat. For ¥95,000 yen, including a small bottle of sake, we expected much better, especially as we’ve had an incredible meal with 400g A5 Hida beef big plate at Hidagyu Maruaki for the same price.

I normally don't rate restaurants, but I left feeling like I had such a good meal for such a good price that I in good consciousness needed to leave a 5 star review. The place is on the second floor and a little bit hidden, but it is definitely worth the visit. Thank you for the great meal!

Operates as a butchery and charge an affordable grill fee of ¥500/pax that comes with a plate of vegetable. Only hida beef available but the prices are unbelievably affordable, easily half the prices you find in any other restaurants. Not to mention the staff are ever so friendly, and they can speak basic English. Can’t believe I can find this gem by luck!

A very cozy restaurant with great deal of Hida beef.I pick this place because they use charcoal grill and it is amazing. We spent 12000yen including a big piece of Hida steak, a bottle of sake, free flow of vegetables and tea. Reasonable price and I enjoyed their hospitality very much!!!

Great place. Huge portions, the soba noodles and the broth are very tasty, clear broth, tasty and balanced! Most def worth the trip. Don’t be intimidated by the front of house lady, she is really nice if you are interested and nice back!

Wow! What a lovely hidden gem in a small street in takayama. Especially the cold soba is recommended here or the hida beef soba. They serve a lot of fresh sides such as wasabi that one can freshly grate and put in the dipping sauce. The staff is extremely friendly and explains very detailed how to properly eat the soba. Lovely!

Cosy eatery. Friendly service in decent English. I had the Soba and beef bowl which was very good and good value. My wife's vegetable tempura Soba was good too but not as good in value. Mainly root vegetable although decent portion size.

Beautifully executed soba. After having a number of average soba in Japan, Miyabi-an Soba shows that it is a cut above the rest. Real wasabi is used and freshly grated, soba noodles at the perfect texture, even the soba water is exquisite, and all that at a reasonable price point!

My favourite meal so far! Hadn’t tried soba yet nor had I tried hiba beef so made a beeline for here as had read about it on a food blog. Delighted with my order which had tofu and soy sauce and other small bites to start, then I added a hiba sashimi nigiri with wasabi so I could try it and finished with meat soba. The warmed hiba beef on rice with 100 year old egg was insane and so was the soba - so full of flavour and such an experience. Even grated the wasabi from the root too. Utterly superb and just what we needed on a cold, rainy Takayama afternoon.

Great service by the wait staff. Expect a slight wait after ordering since Food are made upon ordering. The experience is 10/10. Fresh wasabi. Grate it yourself. Great prices. Egg roll was awesome too. We had to have 2 meals here this trip. Only down side was the Tempura batter was slightly on the heavy side. But the ingredients were fresh n awesome.

I'm a cold soba lover myself so this brings the experience to another level. Nothing beats having freshly grated wasabi! Tempura was slightly heavy. Love the plum too. Super unique! The egg was yummy too. This was so good that I had to come back and have it again before I leave.

What a gem of a find! We had enjoyed many days of Japanese cuisine but decided to switch it up this evening. This place was amazing! There is an English menu — though the food exceeded our expectations given the menu has limited description of each dish. It is evident that they pay significant attention to detail with each dish. The food was absolutely delicious. We were the only tourists in here and the staff was welcoming and friendly! Would definitely recommend.

This restaurant offers both tasting menu and a la carte menu. But the tasting menu has to be booked one day in advance. I ordered from a la carte menu and the fish was surprisingly tasty. Chef seasoned the plate very nicely. The dishes were aromatic from the variety of ingredients. Love it!

Went for dinner @ Nakagawa with my wife. We ordered the Hida Wagyu Fillet dinner set & added on the vegetable soup of the day. Everything is delicious! The steak was the right temperature to our liking 👍 We both enjoyed the dinner very much. The best meal we had in Takayama during our 2 nights stay! Will visit again if we come to Takayama in future.

Absolutely amazing experience. We booked dinner course for two, the chef was kind enough to adjust my menu as I only eat fish. Micheline star restaurant quality food. Amazing combination of Japanese and western cuisine. But without stress and discomfort of overly fancy restaurant. Staff was very sweet and food was absolutely breathtaking.

The staff were very friendly and handed us an English menu the moment we sat down. The ambience was amazing, there's also an area to hang our coat when we enter. A standard ramen bowl that comes in different sizes and varying amounts of meat. The ramen texture was bouncy and chewy but the soup was rather salty. A normal bowl comes with only 1 slice of meat and the extra comes with 4 slices.

NHK World is such a helpful streaming channel when it comes to the specifics of traveling and eating in Japan. That's how I learned Takayama is the home of chuka soba, a traditional soy-based ramen made with thin Chinese-style noodles. Although I'm not a ramen fanatic, I knew my husband and I needed to try it, and this family-run business came up as a highly popular spot. Indeed it was, especially with local families who occupied all the tables. Fortunately there was plenty of counter seating. The menu wasn't complicated, just four bowls, two of which feature 'wanton', and eggs and rice on the side. My husband went for the Basic Ramen, ¥1100 for the large bowl with bamboo shoots, green onion, and one slice of pork. I couldn't help myself and went for the ¥1700 Large Chashu-men with four slabs of tender, fatty pork. What our bowls had in common was the surprisingly light soy broth steeped in pork bones and seafood and of course, the thin, curly noodles that identifies their chuka origins. FOOD - 4 stars...satisfying ramen bowls, meatiness at your discretion, and BYOB...because they only serve water AMBIANCE - 4 stars...clean shop, just spacious enough SERVICE - 4.5 stars...pretty quick about it TOTAL - 4 stars...chuka soba if you please

Cute ramen place in Takayama. We loved the salty clear broth of the ramen (don’t come here if you’re expecting other styles of ramen). Would recommend if you’re into this ramen style! Cozy atmosphere with family photos all around the restaurant.

Went there spontaneously and didn‘t regret! Had the Wantan-men (Ramen with Wantan) and enjoyed every bite.😋 The staff was really kind, too. I forgot to bring cash, so I had to go to the ATM first. They took it in stride, though.😄

We came here for an early dinner and were warmly greeted by the people working here. A nice man handed us an English menu and directed us to a table. The menu is quite simple – we settled on the large ramen with an egg and the wonton soup with an egg. The broth isn’t super complex, but is flavorsome enough and I did enjoy the soy sauce taste of it. The pork was pretty good. The ramen noodles were excellent and the eggs were cooked perfectly. The wonton soup was lighter and I didn’t really taste the meat inside. I also liked that we were given an entire pitcher of water. The place is simple and sometimes that is exactly what you need.

A homely place with simple choices. Items on the menu may be limited but the taste is great and there is a choice of small, medium and large bowl of noodles. A small and mightly place with a great price. Staff are welcoming and friendly.

The best dish during my first Japan Trip! As a muslim, It’s challenging to find a halal local dish in Japan (except for ramen), especially if you’re in small town. Kyoshi not only gives as an experience to taste a local dish, but a very delicious halal hida beef dish!! For muslim travellers, this restaurant deserves your time when you visit Takayama!

Currently in Takayama wanting a break from Hida beef, we found this restaurant to offer fish based dishes. Been on Japan for about 2 weeks and have tried loads of different dishes but this has got to be one of my favorite. Their tuna rice bowl was so good, simple but the quality of the tuna was amazing, so fresh and tender. The room is quite big so you have plenty of space to enjoy your meal with jazz music in the background. Very affordable but especially for the quality of the food. Strongly recommend!

Absolutely delicious, worth the price, expect to spend 3000-5000 yen per person, but the quality is great. The restaurant is very clean and well designed, no greasy smell. Clean toilet. The hida beef is special and tender, what I wish is that they grill it slightly more as there wasn’t enough smoke flavour when I ate the beef.

Came in for a very quick and casual bite with the intention of trying the local Hida beef. I got the "Hida beef tasting steak rice bowl" and it did not disappoint! The meat literally melts in your mouth and the way it was prepared was perfect. The service was great with the staff being polite and cheerful. Definitely recommend stopping by.

Great value for money! I love the reusable sake souvenir cup you buy for about 500 yen and self-pour style to try different sakes. I would have liked a chance to learn more about the brewery and sake produced, but there was very little information. Unfortunately there were so pushy and unruly travelers, so please be respectful and patient!

It's ok, but whole ambience was spoilt by the wannabe sake connoisseurs standing in front of the tasting fridge. Staff were polite but transactional with no one promoting the large selection of sakes.

Amazing sake shop with an option of sake tasting which you get the sake cup. Great sake selection and other products that have sake. Enjoy your sake in their mini lounge and try their Gashspon machine to get a nice shop surprise.

Huge variety of sake available for sale, you’ll be spoil for choices at this brewery! Best part, they have sake vending machine for you to sample which is probably the highlight of this shop. Quite fun as you can go around sampling any type with just the token. If you love sake, do change the token with ¥1000 note so you actually get extra. Perfect for the winter weather too, we went in from the sudden snowfall and gust. The sake just gave us the extra warmth we need.

This is such a great stop in Takayama. You can taste all of their sake by paying 200 yen (you can keep the cup), but if you're a cheapo, just go to the counter and just point some bottle and said tasting. They will give you plastic cup, and will offer you any sake you want.

What a lovely place! So many sake bottles to try! For only 200yen they give you a cup and they direct you to a fridge of 11 bottles of sake to taste without supervision, please be respectful and try one of each which you will see it's worth the tasting price and on top of that you can KEEP the cup! They also have delicious sweets and sakekasu which would be amazing on bread or a rice bowl.

Now we went here because of the good rating and it didn't disappoint. Just a bit far from where your tour bus might be parked but well worth it. 900 yen ramen. Affordable but definitely good flavor. Personally, had the basic ramen. Loved the chunk of meat. Flavorful, tender and soft.

Cozy ramen house at Takayama. The humble looking noodles took us by surprise, the noodles were springy and cooked perfectly, soup was flavourful and light, not cloying. Not the typical Ichiran ramen type. The char siu was so tender! We sat at the counter seats and watched the chef prepared the noodles. You can sense the dedication and precision in the way he worked. We regretted not going for the upsized noodles! Must try if you are at takayama! Highly recommended!

Nice bowls of ramen. Light and subtle flavors. Simple menu. We got both bowls—the Takayama ramen had thinner noodles and a broth with a stronger dashi flavor. Both had just the right amount of sodium! I can’t say which one I liked better, but slightly prefer the noodles in the Takayama; they were thinner, curly, and had a nice bite to it. Try both ramen with a little bit of white pepper, it really brings out the flavor. The pork in the Takayama and the chicken in the shoyu were both cooked perfectly. Tender, but not too meaty/gamey. Service was friendly and fast. The shop is off a main road and not too hard to find. We went at 11:15 right after they opened and there was no line.

We loved this place so much that we visited twice during our stay — and both times were amazing! We had the crepes and the warabi mochi, both absolutely delicious, especially the mochi with ice cream!! The coffee was great too, and the yuzu tea was surprisingly not too sweet, which was a really nice surprise for me. The atmosphere is so calm and relaxing — the little Japanese garden next to us made it even more special. On our second visit, we sat Japanese-style on the tatami floor, which felt really authentic. Loved visiting the cafe, set in a gorgeous house with interior garden to look over. It’s the cutest place. The staff are so sweet and helpful finding me the gluten free options. I ordered the crepe made from rice flour with chocolate and whipped cream. It was delicious! Even my non gluten free boyfriend loved it! 100% recommend coming here.

We stumbled upon this quaint cafe in a little laneway and really enjoyed trying local delicacies. Just like when going to someone’s house, we had to remove our shoes. We loved the view of the internal courtyard. The soft serve tofu ice cream was the standout, nutty and rich, not too sweet, with a nice smooth texture. Warabi mochi was interesting too.

Great tea house that’s away from all the hustle and bustle. Service was great and welcoming towards tourists. There’s an English menu provided. Many drink and dessert options to choose from. The tea house is also very traditional and cozy. You have to take your shoes off at the entrance. Loved the experience! I ordered a hot matcha tea and warabimochi with soybean ice cream. It was a perfect little break from sightseeing.

We came across this restaurant on our visit to Hida Furukawa. Set in a typical Japanese style dining area with shoes off on the Tatami mats. We hit the jackpot. The food was outstanding, the presentation on the plate was of the highest order and so eye appealing the food exceeded all expectations. The service too was exceptionally quick with the usual Japanese politeness. This is a must visit restaurant whenever you visit this most picturesque town in the Gifu Prefecture. Five Stars all round.

We booked ahead on machiya locals. The first five courses were incredible, just unique and beautifully presented. After that we were starting to get pretty full, but they continued with slightly less decorative with more food, and were all excellent. The staff were great and explained everything in English. The dessert was relatively simple fruit with wine jelly but soo good. They recommended a cold sake that incredibly smooth, just really nice accompaniment to the meal. The tempura had little round balls and was really delicious. Just a really unique dining experience.

Wow! Kakusho is amazing Shojin ryori (vegetarian). The food, service, and atmosphere are all 5 stars! The presentation was immaculate and detailed. All the people there are really friendly and know English pretty well! My partner is vegetarian and she really enjoyed it! It was definitely a highlight of our trip! Would highly recommend booking lunch or dinner for a unique experience.

A no alliums vegetarian 精进料理 with authentic and superb service from the staff. Recommended to book in advance. For me, I went on a adhoc basis, so we were told to come back in 40 mins as they need time to prepare (which was alright). Fine details in the food and all of the items are very flavourful ! My Desert comes with wine. If you are strict vegetarian, may need to omit. We are seated in a private room with a washroom attached. It cost about Sgd $165 for 9 course meal.

This kaiseiki dinner was an amazing experience. A dinner with many courses. All vegetable based and full of taste. Very intricate aesthetic presentation. The building and garden were amazing as well. Amazing experience! This was our first Kaiseki Dinner. A Vegeterian Kaiseki is very unique for Japan. We had our own private Room in the Garden, on Tatami Mats. The Madame wich is the owner told us, that the Restaurant is in their hands since 200 years. The whole family was so kind and made us feel so welcome! If we ever come back to Takayama we will safe come again! Thank you so much for this unforgettable experience! 😊

A beautifully crafted and orchestrated vegetarian kaiseki experience, do yourself a favour and book a private room (you’d think you’re the only customers) and I hope you’re fortunate to have a chance to walk the 200 year old garden that is part of this fantastic restaurant, after dark it’s sublime but I would’ve loved to have seen it during the day.

Please be aware of this place, especially if you are a foreigner. We visited for dinner and were told to park our car at a designated parking area. After our meal, we walked to nearest convenience store to buy drink and snack. Upon returning, we were shocked to find the staff waiting by our car, asking for 5,000 yen for leaving the vehicle in the parking for less than 10 minutes. The staff threatened us, saying he would call the police if we didn't pay. He also told us to eat and go , Japanese rule dun allow people to park car not even 1 min after eating. So rude!? Police advised us to sort it out between ourselves, but the staff refused to let us leave and continued to harass us for money. This was our first experience being treated so poorly as customers, and it has left a very negative impression. I urge others to think twice before visiting this place! A ramen shop in the Nibanmachi area of Hida Takayama. The English menu was already displayed when I entered, meaning they were already accommodating foreigners by default. I had their wanton ramen at 900 yen. The soup was quintessential Takayama ramen, soy sauce ramen with thin curly noodles and even thinner pork slabs but with overwhelming taste. The place has a sumo shrine on the tatami seat. Overall it was a great classic Takayama ramen place with no frills whatsoever.

Hearty, unassuming delicious ramen. Broth has a clean taste. Chasiu is literally melted in your mouth on the first bite. Pork Gyoza has a slight crunch together with soft and juicy filling. Highly recommend for late afternoon meal :)

An absolute delicious ramen with a light but distinct flavor to the broth and thin noodles that are the perfect firmness to the bite, a couple of slices of chashu and green onions to garnish simple but somehow just what is needed. I also had the dumpling and although they were slightly small in size they were definitely not lacking in flavor. I'm only in Takayama for 2 days but will definitely make sure I got back more than once to expirence their perfect raman 🍜😍

For some reason this little shop/street food is one of my fondest memory of my visit to Takayama. It's a tiny place run by a very nice elderly man who warned us in the most heartfelt, friendly engrishu you can ever hear that the rice dish we were about to eat was 'bery hotto'. And it was delicious. There is a bench inside the shop where you can eat your food. Remember that eating while walking is considered bad manners in Japan. If i'm ever back here, i'll sure go back to try some other dish.

We had the highest grade Hida beef sushi and ordered a second round it was soooooo good. Best beef we’ve had in Japan - we tried A5 Kobe in Kyoto this was better :)

Takayama Pudding Tei is a charming little spot that I recently had the pleasure of visiting. What stood out to me was the incredible smoothness and rich flavor of their puddings. The original flavor is simply divine — not too sweet, with a perfect creamy texture that melts in your mouth. I also tried their Snow Country pudding, which was a delightful variation. The flavor had a unique, refreshing quality that paired beautifully with the creamy base. The service was quick and friendly, making it a relaxing stop in between exploring the city. If you're in Takayama and have a craving for something sweet, I highly recommend this place.

Saw a line when going to the old street. Brought it close to closing timing so only takeout allow. Brought the original flavour and my friend brought the ramune flavor. Both were very good, can taste the richness of the milk in the pudding. Highly recommended!

Decent pudding. I visited twice during my stay in Takayama, both times around 4 PM with no line. Unfortunately, the young staff member without glasses was consistently unwelcoming. She took my order both times, and each time she turned her back to me mid-order without a word. Her expression was also cold and impatient, almost as if she was glaring at the customers. Disappointing service that leaves a bad taste.

Had the matcha and seasonal pistachio flavors. Pistachio was incredibly strong and smooth, while matcha one was intense too but slightly more grainy due to the matcha powder. But matcha one had some red beans thrown in at the bottom, which underplayed smoothness and made the slight powderiness a sensible texture overall. The original flavor and the snowy version are both plain, but with different types of egg yolks. For people who like their pudding plain, you can try both out for comparison.

Wow the pudding is so smooth. It’s so soft - i like this one more than the pudding shop in shirakawa. I tried the navy blue one which is milk flavour - Highly recommend.

Great venue all round, after two weeks in Japan on holiday we needed a good Italian fix and it did not disappoint. The pizza and ragu were a standout. Prosciutto & Arugula pizza , hida beef ragu, caprese salad, torta Caprese and biscotti and vanilla gelato shown in the photos were all amazing. We had our motel make the reservation for us both times we visited, which definitely helped. But the young lady speaks very good English and you will have no problem as a foreigner ordering your meal.

Pizza was amazing, prepared on a wood fire oven. Very good dough, great tomato sauce, and you can which kind of mozzarella you want between the two types they have. We were wondering why most of the exhibits were arcade machines whether they were pinball, pachinko, or slots. Some were free, and others required ¥100 coins. They were quite popular among young parents with hyperactive children. There were also sections focused on action figures and tin toys as well as recreations of a grade school classroom, a clinic, and a barbershop. No surprise that there was a huge candy concession area selling Showa-era sweets. Admission was ¥700. For an extra cost, there was a school lunch option if you want to eat like a student back then, but truthfully nothing sounded all that appetizing. If I had to choose between the two museums, I'd go to the other one since it provides a more comprehensive look at that period. However, if playing nostalgic, interactive games excites you, then this may be more your cup of tea.

The museum contains a charming collection of retro games, toys, and posters. The lady staff at the counter today was very friendly, welcoming and helpful.
