It’s been a wonderful experience to walk through this morning market, pacing slowly enough to enjoy the culture and people. The fruits are fresh. The local people are polite and friendly. I went very early in the morning at 7:00am therefore there aren’t too many people, making it an even better walk. I recommend going early and spend an hour to 90 minutes here. Then sit down at a coffee shop nearby for morning tea and wait for the other shops to open.

The Miyagawa Morning Market is one of the most well-known morning markets in Japan and a popular stop for visitors to Takayama. It’s located along the scenic Miyagawa River, creating a pleasant atmosphere for a morning stroll. While the market is charming, it does feel more catered to tourists than locals, with many stalls selling souvenirs, snacks, and street food rather than everyday produce. The market street itself is relatively short, so you can easily walk through it in about 15–20 minutes. That said, it’s still worth a visit for the lively atmosphere, friendly vendors, and the chance to sample local specialties like Hida beef skewers, fresh fruit, and traditional sweets while enjoying views of the river.

Interesting morning market where we get to see the different local crafts, produce and snacks. Can taste some sample food before buying. There are also small eateries to buy food along the stretch. Quite popular even on a weekday morning. A nice stroll alongside the river. A nice place to visit for first-time visitors to Takayama

I visited the Miyagawa Morning Market around 7 a.m., but most of the shops were still closed and many vendors were just setting up their stalls. I realized it’s probably better to come a bit later, so I went back again around 8 a.m. By that time, more shops were open and the market felt livelier. There were stalls selling food, plants, and various souvenirs. It’s not a very big market, but it has a nice and relaxed atmosphere. I think it’s a good place to walk around in the morning if you’re staying in Takayama and have some free time before noon. Coming a bit later than 7 a.m. would be better if you want to see more shops open.

There is free water, sake at the lobby at specific time. Some traditional snacks are available as well. Parking space is enough and I can get a slot in front of the hotel. Two public onsen which you can use if its not occupied. The is no clear instruction to customers that there is no bath cleaning facilities in it including water and soap. I cannot imagine how many of visitors jump into it without bath, thus I did not enjoy it much. The bath facilities information can only be found in the TV bath usage information page. I take bath at room before going to onsen. It's strongly suggesting post the message in front of the onsen and brief it from the staff as well. As not enough one know this practice before going to onsen. The renewal room is large at 4th floor, you have to get 1 stair up without elevator. The room is packed with beds, tables and chair and not much free spaces. The in room onsen is wonderful and keep yourself private.

It’s an ok market, didn’t find it particularly interesting or appealing, but they sell some nice stuff along with the usual souvenirs for tourists. It’s strange because everything shuts downs at noon and the city becomes almost like a ghost town. Apparently some of the items the vendors are selling are made by the wives of local farmers, so look for handmade things and not souvenirs that seem to be made in a factory, that should help the local community better. Also, as tourists, it’s not always easy to buy fresh produces, as you’re probable going to be on a bus for a few hours with no way of preserving food, so I didn’t personally buy anything to eat here.

We loved the vibe of the market. All the locals selling their homemade goods and fresh fruits in the morning was something I wish I could see in my town every day. We tried getting small samples and sharing them so we could taste everything the market had to offer, which was the best decision. Definitely bring cash and enjoy the atmosphere and all the homemade goods.

The place looks pleasant and traditional. However, the person who served us wasn't rude, but rather ill-tempered. I think if he's in customer service, he should be more friendly. Besides the fact that the food isn't great in general, it tastes good because of the meat, but the croquettes are very greasy and lack sauce. The only thing I recommend is the meat skewers.

This is a great spot for a quick snack. You must try everything here! It’s a cozy place with the best beef skewers we’ve ever had. Definitely a must-stop in Takayama.

Lovely pit stop for hida beef sushi and skewers on the way back to the train station. Chef was warm and friendly to us, and was even calm and even tempered in front of unreasonable tourists. If I had more time, would have definitely gotten a beer and enjoyed more hida beef!

All is freshly made in front of your eyes and compared to others places the quality of the meat is higher and tastier. Recommended 100%! Only cash.

Amazing place! My partner said the meat was great and I had finally a proper vegetarian option and experience- the vegetarian Hoba yaki was soooo good and so fun to mix! We walked by yesterday when people were waiting in line so we came right when they opened today so we didn’t wait at all!

Even though the queue was super long (we almost gave up 😅), the Hida beef here was totally worth it — truly the MVP! For those who don’t eat beef, don’t worry — they also have really tasty pork and chicken options too. Everything was full of flavor and well-prepared. The staff were also very nice and entertaining It’s definitely worth the wait! If you come right after the restaurant opens, be prepared to wait around 2 hours. Fun fact: the staff will come out to check how many people they can still accept. If you’re the last group they can take, they’ll give you a card or paper to show others — basically saying, “Sorry, we’re the last in line!” Such a thoughtful and organized system.

Great Hida beef experience We tried both sukiyaki and charcoal-grilled yakiniku with Hida beef. The meat was very tender and flavorful. Service was excellent, staff were friendly and attentive throughout the meal. Prices were reasonable considering the quality. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

Ajikura is a popular yakiniku (grilled meat) restaurant in Takayama, so it’s best to go early if you don’t want to wait in line. We went for an early lunch to avoid the crowds, and it was much quieter at that time. The restaurant offers convenient iPad ordering with multiple language options, making it easy for visitors. They have a few lunch sets that are reasonably priced and good for a quick meal, though the beef quality wasn’t as impressive as expected—perhaps because we chose the lunch set rather than the premium cuts. Overall, it’s a nice spot for an easy yakiniku experience, especially if you visit outside of peak hours.

Taking the queue 10 mins before the restaurant open after they opened for about 10 mins the queue was already fully booked without accepting any new customers for the rest of the dinner. Waiting in queue for about 1.5 hours for the seat of 9 people table of 5 and 4 people. The service was very incredible and easy to order through the tablet on the table. The beef is the best we have in Takayama compared with other restaurant similar style. Price on the otherhand were quite expensive but you get what you paid for a well deserved 4 stars for my great experienced.

The waiting system doesn't seem work very well when all the customers aren't japanese and they call your number in Japanese only. So you will definitely miss hearing your number calling. Two workers are the cashiers/waiters and who serves your table. Beef grill set is pretty good. Pork belly also recommended.

We went there around 5:15pm to get the queue ticket and had to wait around 1 hour. However, we could walk around the area and check the queue via QR code. If your queue is called and you do not show up, the restaurant will skip your queue. The queue tickets were all taken around 6pm. We had to choose between sukiyaki and yakiniku and we chose yakiniku. The highlights for us were sirloin steak and Hida beef galbi, which melt in our mouths. They were not too fatty or too dry at all. Vegetables especially onions and bell peppers were sweet. Unfortunately, beef tongue was sold out. The meal was worth our money and it was a fantastic experience for our first day of the trip. We will choose this restaurant again if we go back to Takayama.

Excellent Hida Beef. We ordered loin cut and fillet steak. Line up early! We came 515pm to line up. Had our table at 535pm. Finished our dinner at 635pm and then saw at at 7pm the restaurant was already closed. Either the lines were too long or beef sold out.

We had a salad, a small sirloin steak, bread, rice and a chocolate cake and ice cream. Everything was delicious apart from the chocolate cake which was very dense but not bad. The restaurant was very quiet, not much atmosphere (normal for lunchtime?). Everything feels very dated. I imagine if this restaurant was updated it would be booked up for months in advance considering the food and service.

An incredible food experience where everything was so delicious. I highly recommend getting the side sausages as honestly those stood out the most in terms of being uniquely excellent. I got the A5 ribeye which was so delicious (albeit a bit fatty) especially the crisp edges. The service was wonderful with a friendly, knowledgeable and charming server. Only removing a star due to cost as the whole meal was ~15000 yen so it loses a little on value but would highly recommend coming here.

This is probably THE steakhouse in the Takayama, serving good quality Hida beef. Reservations is easy and highly recommended. The place was booked out when we visited. You'd get to choose between A4 and A5 beef cuts, but obviously the price of the meal will be costlier as a result compared to other steakhouses in the area. An interesting fact is they are also well known for their side dish souvenir "Hambaguu", probably a word play on the Hamburg steak, which is one of their specialty goods and very popular among the Japanese (to the point where apparently they have customers visiting the place just to buy those bottled side dish). It's purchasable when you pay for your meal at the counter.

Best steaks we’ve ever had. Some say it’s expensive but this has to be because of how the beef is raised to make it this amazing. We’ve had the sirloin, the tenderloin and the chateau. Make a reservation through google and the restaurant will email or call you to confirm. Service was also phenomenal. We heard rumors about the Hida beef being the best in the world and to us it was the best we’ve ever had. It’s worth every penny. Go for the higher grade-you’ll be glad you did and you’ll have something to talk about and tell your friends after flying back home from vacay.You’ll choose your cut and they’ll bring it to you to see before it’s prepared. We arrived slightly after 5pm and were seated within 5 minutes. The menu does not offer a wide variety of cuts, but we went for the A5 large plate. The meat was sliced thinner than expected, but it was still delicious especially the sirloin and the cubed steak. The price per gram here is more reasonable compared to many other Hida beef restaurants in the area as they raise their own cattle, which is a plus. We added on a sirloin plate, and again, the cut was thin. I skipped the premium sirloin thinking it looked too fatty based on the photo, but after trying premium sirloin at another place the next day, I realised that it could have been the better choice. Overall, a good place to enjoy Hida beef at relatively more affordable prices.

Came in around 6:30 on a Friday evening (post Autumn Matsuri) so it was fairly busy with about 28 groups in front of us. Wait was ~40 minutes, and were hungry but definitely worth the wait. Super fatty and melty meat, great way to experience A5 grade beef. For 2 people, a sampler platter, kimchi sampler, rice, and an extra entree of A5 short rib was plenty since the meat was so rich.

The best yakiniku restaurant in Takayama! We loved it so much that we went twice on two consecutive days during our stay that’s how worth it it was. The Hida beef was absolutely exceptional incredibly tender, juicy, and full of rich flavor that melts in your mouth. You can get the ticket for the queue, explore the town, scan the QR code on it and you can check when it’s time to go there and just get there when it’s time. Their system is great!

This yakiniku restaurant serves genuinely exceptional Hida beef. The quality of the meat is outstanding; it's exactly what you would expect from premium Japanese Wagyu. The beef was tender, flavorful, and truly melts in your mouth—the marbling is second to none. The main issue, however, is the richness. While the marbling (fat) is what gives Hida beef its characteristic tenderness, there was simply too much of it in the cuts we were served. Eating too much felt very greasy and oily.

A5 Hida beef is obviously amazing no doubt. The restaurant itself is surprisingly peaceful inside, so don’t be intimidated by the waiting lounge. The wait is long, but if you arrive around 10:30am to put your name down, it’s actually not bad. The lounge has plenty of seating, which is a warm retreat from walking in the cold anyway.

The breed their own for meat. Good quality and reasonably priced. Well worth the wait for delicious Hida Beef. Get a queue number without delay. It moves fairly quickly when we were there. There is an English menu and order is via scan QR code at the table. Free wifi is available for those without data. Staff are friendly too!!

The restaurant has a nice and cozy atmosphere — it’s small but very clean. The staff were welcoming and spoke English well, which made communication easy. They were also flexible and helpful throughout the meal. The food was good overall: the fish was fresh, the tempura was crisp and not oily, the Hida beef was delicious, and the uni was not fishy (though also not particularly sweet). However, the portion size was quite small compared to the price. It felt expensive for what you get, and I actually had to get some ramen afterward to feel full. Also, the chef mostly spoke Japanese and not much English, which made sitting at the counter a bit uncomfortable.

The chef was super friendly and welcoming! The bar on the first floor was packed with travelers from all over the world, and speaking English was no problem at all. He was especially kind to us as Taiwanese guests, and kept thanking us for the friendship between our two countries — that really touched me. I’m so glad I came across such a warm and inviting place! The Hida beef steak was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and went perfectly with a cold beer. The sushi was also really unique — super fresh ingredients and very reasonably priced. This is a follow on review from the sister restaurant which was too full to take us, but went above and beyond getting us a table at this restaurant. First up they went out of their way to accommodate us and get us onto a table despite us having a wheelchair (dad can walk only a little, but managed to get up their stairs. If you're a wheelchair bound person, this is not the place for you for accessibility). Because of the inconvenience of turning up unannounced with no reservation and being redirected, they gave us a free plate of the most amazing beef sushi which I would frankly fly back from England to have again. The menu was more limited than we expected but the food was amazing. The total cost for us was ¥35,000 about £175 at current exchange rates. This included a plate of beef or tempura, 8 hand made fresh nigiri, a bowl of miso soup with crab claws in & a small dessert. It was excellent. Everyone was very friendly despite the amount of inconvenience we put them to and their English was excellent. You will need to take off shoes (so wear your best non holey socks), it does have mats. Downstairs tables are sunken "floor" tables and the upstairs are western style but low seating.

Great place for fresh sushi and Hida beef! The staff were incredibly accommodating — even though both this restaurant and their sister location were completely full, they kindly made room for us. They let us know we’d need to finish within an hour due to a reserved party, which we appreciated. The sushi was exceptionally fresh, and the Hida beef à la carte was delicious with a perfect crisp on the outside. Highly recommend!

MUST TRY if you are in the location. It was the best sushi food we had so far in japan. Tuna was definitely the best, yellowtail and other fishes were so good as well. Our waitress sayaka was very friendly and she even gave us list of places to visit in this town.

Best sushi in whole of Japan!! We stumbled upon this small sushi joint in 2018 and had an unforgettable sushi experience, flawless execution of sushi classics but what stole the show is the uni chawamushi (Sea urchin steamed egg). It stuck with us as a core food memory ever since. Finally we had the opportunity to come back here again after 7 years in 2025, chef loss some hair but the sushi's quality is as great as we remembered. We will be back again! Btw Matsuki sushi is child friendly too.

Do not go here if you're a foreigner. They segregate you to the top floor in a grey, undecorated room. Truly insane prices for not great food. Soup was OK, tempura was good, sushi was actively bad. They just tossed a bunch of fish together and wrapped it poorly. Tasted like nothing. Menu did not describe the contents of the sushi, which was so strange. Staff were nice. Huge waste of money, but we learned our lesson 🤷‍♀️ I was mostly mad that airbnbs and hotels are clearly colluding with this place. 1,000+ reviews for a restaurant here is weird.

We went there at 6pm on a weekday and already seen groups of people waiting. One could write down the names on waitlist. 23 names in front of of us. We waited though did not hv much expectation. Finally we got our table at 7:10pm. Suggest to wait there instead of going away because the staff don’t speak good english. U need to pay full attention to see if they are calling u. We went in a group of 8 and ordered sukiyaki and yananiku. Meat in good quality at reasonable price. Kids love the rice and beef so much too! Parking available outside. But a pity there there s no high chair for babies.

This is a must try when you are in takayama! Beef is top quality with a very reasonable price tag. There are two branches in the town so if one is full, feel free to walk to the other which only takes 10 minutes if not less. Get the best beef if you can. I think you will need to pay triple the price for the same meat if you are in the States.

Exceptional hida beef! Melts in your mouth. Decided on shabu shabu and a beef don. Just wow! Trust me, it’s good! We only had a 2hr stopover here, half an hour spent waiting for table, 1hr eating... guess I’ll be back again, hopefully soon!

Maruaki has 2 shops. When we were there the sign board said fully booked for lunch. When I asked whether we can wait to get a seat, they let us in. We managed to get the seat for 6 just a short wait. So just ask even it said is fully booked. The hida beef is of top quality. We ordered 2 types one is grilled one is with miso. Preferred the grilled one.

Hi all! :-) amazing Hida meat in Takayama! We choose option 300g of meat for two people plus 2 set rice, miso and salad. It was just amazing! You cook meat on your table and taste is really nice. High quality A5.

Hida beef is really unique. Melting in mouth. The best cooking should be grilling. The restaurant is quiet. No need to queue in weekdays.

I have conflicting opinions regarding my experience here. I m totally fine with waiting in line, it's actually a beautiful corner of the city, so not a big deal. Gyoza-wise i i liked the concept, the ideas, but some of the flavours were too bold for my palate ( beef wrapped gyozas were hands down the best ones). The interior of the restaurant is super cute with lots of drawings both inside and outside that will entertain your dinner. I was very disappointed because i asked for some water and i was told i had to purchase a bottle. No tap water available. It's the first time it ever happened in several trips to Japan

Wow! The gyoza was absolutely delicious—one of the best I’ve ever had! We waited about 20 minutes after arriving, but it was completely worth it. The service, the food, and the atmosphere were all perfect.

My partner and I waited for about 40 minutes, We were met with the waiter who checked on the line every now and then, One of the nicest people ever. Both the chef and him seem so grateful and happy to serve food (which is incredible) Also, not sure if they use a special kind or just put an extra amount but, you have to try the plum wine and soda!

Queued for 1.5 hours eventho I arrived at 550pm. But the Gyoza were so good. We loved their beef and pork Gyoza. Their hida beef wrap Gyoza also nice. Staff were friendly and orderly to manage queue.

Best ramen in all of Takayama. Great traditional experience sitting at the tables without shoes in the booths. Food and service was fantastic and I would recommend popping in. There can sometimes be a queue so write your name on the board and wait your turn. 5-20 minute wait to get in.

The one food item that the YouTube vloggers said was a must-try in Takayama was the Hida Beef Sushi. These self-absorbed, follower-chasing travelers would rave about the tenderness of the meat and then immediately tell me to press the Subscribe button. Alas, it did look like a tasty morsel on camera, and this was the place mentioned the most to get it. Jamie W and I were strolling on Sanmachi Suji, the heart of Takayama's Old Town, when we came upon this spot. While the street was crowded, surprisingly the order window was not. That was likely because they were sold out of two of the three levels of Hida Beef Sushi - the ¥600 Lean version and the ¥1,000 Premium version. That left the ¥800 Medium-Fat version, so we naturally ordered it to share. The long slices of tender-looking Hida beef were slightly seared, placed over sushi rice nigiri-style, and lacquered with a horseradish soy sauce. It was placed on a flat rice cracker with a tiny dab of wasabi on top. It was prepared medium-rare, which was a plus, though the meat was slightly chewier than expected. Still, it was gone in a matter of minutes, and we didn't spend much time perusing the rest of their restaurant menu. FOOD - 4 stars...tender but slightly chewy AMBIANCE - 3 stars...not much atmosphere though they had open seating inside SERVICE - 4 stars...pretty automatic though the process was meticulous TOTAL - 4 stars...Hida Beef Sushi...check!

Its incredible authentic experience. The servis is very friendly. There is wide selection and menu is in English too. One of the best meet we ever had. We took roast beef, its was very soft and rump steak, also delicious.

Ordered the beef sushi street food set for ¥1,200. Honestly, it looked good but the meat was a bit tough, not the melt-in-your-mouth kind I was expecting from Hida beef. Still decent for a quick bite, and I appreciated that they provide a place to sit inside so you don’t eat in front of other shops. Just not as impressive as I hoped.

Never pre planned to visit this place just walk in spontaneously. Only after I made my orders then started to read the review and realized this is a popular joint. The interior is very nice traditional Japanese setting. The foods are really fresh and well cooked. Absolutely unforgettable experience! Strongly recommend!

Wonderful spot for hida beef in Takayama Old Town. We were there just in time when it was open and there was no wait. The beef grilled on oba leaf was phenomenon. Do yourself a favor and don’t miss!

5 years ago I've tried it and it was amazing. Came back this year to try it but there was a sign saying it's closed at 3pm, an hour earlier than displayed on Google. Came back the next day and still closed. No sign mentioning they're away or something. 5 years ago i would give it an easy 5*, however since i couldnt try this year ill give it a 4* in hope when i come back again this year it still has the taste i had the first time.

Simple and absolutely delicious curry.

Nice grilled beef and beef curry restaurant with a view on the river. We had the beef curry (1600円) and it was very satisfying on a winter's day. Our friends who got the grilled beef set (~3000円) also enjoyed their meals.

Hands down the best Sukiyaki I have ever tasted. The beef is second to none, and the sukiyaki taste was perfection. I also enjoyed a Hida beef croquette which was excellent, perfectly crisp! I loved the little touches in this restaurant such as the Japanese candy mixed with the sugar! The view over the river made this meal so incredible and special. This place is a real treat and I’ll be dreaming of the day I return to taste this sukiyaki again!

Delicious Hida beef sukiyaki with a river view. Ingredients are all prepared perfectly to help you cook your hot pot. The waitress looking after us seemed maybe a liiiittle bit pushy, constantly coming over to tell us how to cook the dish, although there were clear instructions at the table. They probably get many people who don’t know how to do it, and just want everyone to have a good meal, so I understand it’s likely coming from a good place. Recommend booking ahead as most dinner places close at or before 8 PM in Takayama.

We came across this restaurant and had a fabulous experience. We sat upstairs and the waitress helped us cook the meal and informed us how long to cook the food and how to dip the food in a beaten egg. It was absolutely delicious! It is a small restaurant and has a few tables plus an eating bar overlooking the river. Recommended for a great experience!

The food here was absolutely amazing — high-quality Hida beef prepared perfectly, with fast and efficient service. Reservations are a good idea since seating is limited. Unfortunately, the lack of ventilation made the experience quite uncomfortable; it was extremely hot inside, and we were all drenched by the end of the meal. If you’re sensitive to heat, it might be best to visit in cooler seasons or choose another spot.

We were in search for some place where to try the Hida meat, and we ended trying subiyaki and shabu-shabu Hida beef for the first time here: the staff has been very kind and helpful, with a quick service - even the spoken english was fine. The quality of the meat was high, for a reasonable price. I appreciated the Hida beef nigiri really much as well. The second floor dining room with view over the river and the bridge is a plus while eating. Payment with credit cards available.

First time in Japan and wanted to learn about Sake. Many offer tastings but here you learn a lot about sake. We had a great host who we will call him “50 years”, if you go ask for him. And after two other breweries, they were our favorite!

This brewery offers an outstanding sake tasting experience at a very affordable price. For ¥1000, you get a 30-minute session where you can sample as many of their sakes as you'd like. The selection is impressive, with 20-30 different varieties available. The host was very friendly and provided excellent service, culminating in a personal recommendation for a bottle to purchase based on my preferences from the tasting. This is a perfect activity if you want to efficiently sample a wide range of sakes and discover what type you like best.

Great experience tasting many varieties of sake and liqueur for only 500 Yen. The man working at the tasting room was very helpful and told us so much about the sake we were tasting. An amazing experience in Takayama, I would definitely recommend it.

Highly recommend this distillery. It's off the main street, more peaceful and the staff was a delight. We got lucky to be allowed to get in even if we arrived 5min late for the last order, something to consider. Last order us at 16h30. The sake were all very good and they gave 300Y voucher per person if you want to get something afterwards. One of the highlight of takayama!

One of the best alcohol tastings ever. Only 1000yen (Nov 2025) per person to try up to 20 sake, with tasting notes and staff guidance. Staff very knowledgeable and fluent Japanese + English. Option to purchase sake from the shop for reasonable prices too.

Best 30min all you can taste sake out of multiple selection of bottles. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and pleasant. Lots of information sake production. Great variety of sakes to pick from. Worth it.

4 star overall for Center4 hamburgers. The burger itself is great, classic hamburger, uncomplicated, with lettuce tomato diced onion mayonnaise and mustard. Toasted buttery bun, and the patty is fair in size. The fries are nicely cut potato fries, not classic string fries, though the portions of fries that come with the burger were a little small. Service is good, slightly on the slower end from what we've been accustomed to in Japan. The cheese burger and fries cost us 1400¥, without drinks. We came for lunch, and we waited 30 minutes at 1pm. We showed up the evening before at 645pm and they had already sold out of burgers, we were quite shocked and a bit annoyed but still decided to come back the next day. This place definitely needs a reservation.

Love it! The building has Americana vintage decor and collectables / beer bottles from all over the world. We had the cheese burger, hamburger and the hida burger. Short wait on a weekday - it's only a small restaurant with only two tables for four people available. Recommend - the patties and fresh tomatoes were absolutely amazing. Simple but so good.

Honestly, there not enough good things to say about this place. Extremely kind and hospitable; as we have found everyone in Takayama. As a couple originally from the U.S. but living in Western Europe for the last few years, this place was so refreshing to visit. The burgers are on our top 5 all time list and you can’t find a pickle like they serve here anywhere around our current home. Get the Hida Burger and a side of pickles! Thanks for everything :)

Came here with a group of friends for dinner and can’t say enough good things about this place. The owners were very kind and food was great. The onion rings were great even by American standards and the burgers were great too. We also loved the eclectic antique decor. Highly recommend coming here if you’re in the area!

This is the number one place I would suggest to go to in Japan, not because of the great Japanese food but just as an alternative to it. We arrived without a reservation but were warmly welcomed and accommodated with a table. The staff’s hospitality was excellent throughout the evening. The restaurant has a distinctly unique atmosphere for Japan. The owners ask guests not to take photographs, which seems to be about preserving the intimate character of the space, an approach I found quite refreshing. The burger itself was outstanding. What impressed me most was the restraint: no elaborate sauces or gimmicks, just exceptional execution of the fundamentals. The bun was perfectly textured, the meat cooked precisely right, and every element worked in harmony. It’s the kind of dish that demonstrates real skill through simplicity. An excellent meal and a memorable evening. Highly recommended if you’re in Takayama.

Incredible. Kind, polite staff. Sandwich and cheesecake were simple but excellently crafted. Vienna coffee was so yummy but idk what was in it 😅 we went twice in two days because we were so blown away. Atmosphere is kinda old school French, but more wabi sabi? Cozy. Popped by this cozy little retro cafe for an afternoon tea. The cafe and the staff were cute and charming. We got a coffee and a hot grape drink (was intrigued when we saw this item on the menu). When we took a sip of the hot grape drink, we realise it’s probably more for kids as it tasted a candy-like drink. Still, it was fun to try something new. The cafe also offered sweets and snacks but we were not hungry so we only had a drink each.

Before reading I want to say I never write reviews. This place is so good and the staff was so welcoming and warm I just had to write this. We came here after travelling from Kyoto to Hida-Takayama to eat some lunch. When we got inside we all got a warm feeling and felt really welcome. The host was welcoming and when we got seated they gave us warm towels to clean our hands. The food and drinks where delicious! I got a caramel cappuccino and a onion cheese toast. After paying our check the staff even spoke some Dutch to us since we come from the Netherlands! The day after we went again and even got a gift when we left! I would recommend this to everyone that comes to Takayama.

What a little gem of a place. Very good coffee and such welcoming staff. Wish we had of found it sooner... rather then on our lay morning in Takayama. We loved the ambience and the little biscuits served with our drinks. The hot lemon drink was delicious. After leaving the waitress ran down the street after us to give us some free biscuits... what a treat and so kind. Highly recommend this place.

I'm not sure what everyone sees in this old, run down, dirty place of a Cafe. The radio is on full blast, and the waitress was not hygienic. The food is nothing special. Disappointing. Lots of junk lying around.

A most wonderful little Coffee shop run by beautiful people. The atmosphere is just so...relaxing. gentle piano playing in the background, warm and cosy surroundings and again the most polite and hospitable owners. Their coffee is THE best and worth visiting along with their apple pie.. yum!

We ordered the Hida beef with miso set cooked on magnolia leaf, A5 sirloin, and a seasonal vegetable with magnolia leaf grilled miso set meal. All were delicious. The Hida beef was especially high quality and grilling over the charcoal grill was very satisfying. The setting is traditional Japanese style, quiet and cosy. The chef personally came out to greet each table, which made the experience feel even more special. Parking is available, and we made a reservation through their website.

Delicious set meals and great service! There was a lot of variety so menu is able to accommodate different food preferences — beef, sashimi, soba.

We wanted to like Kyōya given the high ratings but didn’t really enjoy our meal here. The hoba miso beef was way too salty for our taste. Our Hida luxury set came with two different cuts of Hida beef, one was good and the other was tough and chewy. If you look at the attached photos, the marbling in the beef we got wasn’t great. We tried Hida beef at another restaurant the next day and enjoyed it much better there. Staff spoke good English, and meal was served quickly after we ordered. Restaurant setting was nice.

The food, especially the Hida beef, was delicious. The set meals were very generous and consisted of a variety of dishes, including appetisers and dessert. The price was very reasonable in view of the portion size and quality of the food served. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Hida beef tastes slightly different from Kobe beef, and for some reason it’s easier on the palate, which is a good thing. Service is great, as with most eateries in Japan.

We stayed in Takayama for one day, and this was one of our hotel’s recommended restaurants. Located in the Old Town, we tried the hida beef A5 filet and sirloin, which came with a side of bread or rice, vegetables or fries, and a soup, which we upgraded to french onion. We finished the set meal with an English tea and sorbet. I’m not french, but the food was fantastic! The beef was super fatty and cut like butter. We also had the beef carpaccio which was one of my favorites. The staff was very friendly and had an English menu waiting on the table 😅

Had an absolutely sumptuous dinner at this French restaurant in Takamaya. My friends and I had fillet and sirloin steaks done nearly to perfection. The salad and soup didn't disappoint too. So was dessert creme brulee. The service was good too, staff were attentive. Who said no good things can come from a small town? This restaurant can rival most in Tokyo. Run by a Japanese couple.

we came here cuz we wanted to find something to eat for our toddler. Service was great, I took hamburger which wasn’t looked like it but was delicious like homemade. They have made smaller portion for a half price for our kid and even gave us ice cream as a complimentary.

Have had the pleasure of dining here on two separate trips to Takayama. In 6 years of living in Japan I can say, without a doubt, this is one of the best restaurants I’ve ever eaten at. The Hida beef is cooked to perfection. Whether you have the beef cheek, the filet, the fricassee… it’s all superb. Excellent service in a chic but cozy dining room. A must if you are in the area and can get a reservation.

We were so lucky to turn up at opening time without a reservation to get a table reserved for 7pm, so had to leave before then which was fine. Needless to say you must make a reservation. Never had beef sushi in my life before this. Was really delicious. Yummy!! In my opinion, it’s a must try when you are in Takayama. No seatings but then again why stop when there are many other food to try along the street.

Love love Hida Beef! The texture was *chef's kiss* and tasted so good. I especially loved the Order X with the premium cut and the Gunkan with the creamy egg. The beef was soft and cooked medium rare which considering the thin slice and the flavor of the meat itself, I would say is the best doneness. But well I love my steaks medium rare so, it was perfect. The garnishes + sauce was not too overpowering which made the beef flavor shine. It was a great touch using shrimp crackers as "plates" to hold the sushi. Nice palette cleanser in the end as well. Prepare for a line especially if coming in during peak season. They also post signs if in case the items are low in stock or limited, but if you can come by in the morning or after lunch. But this is no guarantee. Must try if you are in Takayama and will definitely buy again when I come back.

Had the Hida Beef Rump Steak 🥩 delicious Set Menu. It came with a pumpkin soup which I enjoyed. Afterwards I was served the steak which I personally enjoyed. The meat did not have a lot of fat, it was juicy, easy to chew, and tasty. I personally would come back here again!

This charming French bistro is run by a husband-and-wife team, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The service was friendly and attentive, with the owner even going out of her way to move her car so we could park conveniently next to the restaurant. We opted for the set menu, which included a salad, pumpkin soup, steak, and dessert. The pumpkin soup was outstanding, and the Hida steak was truly exceptional.

It was a magnificent meal that I won’t forget. The steak was perfect and the sides were fantastic. Also, really enjoyed the local sake they had on the menu. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. Would recommend if you’re in Takayama.

Perfectly cooked Hida Beef steak, all other dishes delicious too, we had the chicken, steak, fish & pasta, as well as sides of potato chip fries & caesar salad and blueberry tart for desert. Can’t go wrong with selection. Tastes as good as if I was in France. Owners very nice and good English, ended up chatting with them at the end of the evening and very nice!

Theres a small queue before the resto opening for dinner section. The beef is really good that melts in your mouth. I recommend the soup soba too cuz the beef and soup is better than the dipping one (the sauce is a lil too salty for me). Please order the small rice to share and pudding as well its very milky.

A soba shop a few minutes’ walk from the Hida-Takayama station. Their bestseller is the tsuke soba with Hida beef, but I was already tired with Hida beef so I just went with their zaru soba with some nameko topping. The dashi and noodle were great but the nameko turned it up a notch for me. I asked for soba water then added some of the leftover nameko. It was the perfect broth after eating the soba.

Walked by this place early in day and decided to go for dinner. We were a bit early and were surprised that there were already five people in line. We were in with the first group and the place filled up and had a line within ten minutes. Food came right out and the soba noodles were great. Had hida beef and rice on the side and it was excellent. A triple size of that would be a dream dinner. Appears this is a popular place with several people in line from china, so I’m guessing it is well reviewed there. Staff very efficient and they work around my bad Japanese just fine, a big thank you for that. Tea served for free with dinner. Pictures show many traditional floor tables, but there are plenty of tables as well. Be advised tables are set communally. Had hida beef soba and vegetable one. Beef broth was better of two but both very enjoyable. Fish smelled great. Building really ads to the atmosphere that runs throughout this part of town. Only open from 1730-1900 for dinner, or until soba runs out.

We arrived at the restaurant around 6:15 PM, with closing time at 7, and you could already feel it in the atmosphere - but it was still nice overall. The soba broth cooled down quite quickly, which was a bit disappointing, though perhaps that’s how it’s usually served. It was our first (and probably last) try of this type of dish, but overall it was a good experience.

Pleasant and casual place. Very tender and tasty hide beef in buckwheat noodle soup. Rainbow trout in noodle soup was fried and cooked to a state that it's bones were edible. Just three minutes from Takayama train station.

Came to this Japanese soba restaurant when it was almost time to close and tempura was sold out. Most dishes contain beef. If you cannot eat beef, need to come early. Soba was really good. The portion is generous. Expect queue during lunch.

Great place. Huge portions, the soba noodles and the broth are very tasty, clear broth, tasty and balanced! Most def worth the trip. Don’t be intimidated by the front of house lady, she is really nice if you are interested and nice back!

Wow! What a lovely hidden gem in a small street in takayama. Especially the cold soba is recommended here or the hida beef soba. They serve a lot of fresh sides such as wasabi that one can freshly grate and put in the dipping sauce. The staff is extremely friendly and explains very detailed how to properly eat the soba. Lovely!

Cosy eatery. Friendly service in decent English. I had the Soba and beef bowl which was very good and good value. My wife's vegetable tempura Soba was good too but not as good in value. Mainly root vegetable although decent portion size.

Beautifully executed soba. After having a number of average soba in Japan, Miyabi-an Soba shows that it is a cut above the rest. Real wasabi is used and freshly grated, soba noodles at the perfect texture, even the soba water is exquisite, and all that at a reasonable price point!

My favourite meal so far! Hadn’t tried soba yet nor had I tried hiba beef so made a beeline for here as had read about it on a food blog. Delighted with my order which had tofu and soy sauce and other small bites to start, then I added a hiba sashimi nigiri with wasabi so I could try it and finished with meat soba. The warmed hiba beef on rice with 100 year old egg was insane and so was the soba - so full of flavour and such an experience. Even grated the wasabi from the root too. Utterly superb and just what we needed on a cold, rainy Takayama afternoon.

Great service by the wait staff. Expect a slight wait after ordering since Food are made upon ordering. The experience is 10/10. Fresh wasabi. Grate it yourself. Great prices. Egg roll was awesome too. We had to have 2 meals here this trip. Only down side was the Tempura batter was slightly on the heavy side. But the ingredients were fresh n awesome.

Nice cosy space to have freshly made soba! And you grate your own wasabi too! Personally, this is an amazing experience. Staff was super nice to explain how to have soba. I'm a cold soba lover myself so this brings the experience to another level. Nothing beats having freshly grated wasabi! Tempura was slightly heavy. Love the plum too. Super unique! The egg was yummy too. This was so good that I had to come back and have it again before I leave.

The best dish during my first Japan Trip! As a muslim, It’s challenging to find a halal local dish in Japan (except for ramen), especially if you’re in small town. Kyoshi not only gives as an experience to taste a local dish, but a very delicious halal hida beef dish!! For muslim travellers, this restaurant deserves your time when you visit Takayama!

Currently in Takayama wanting a break from Hida beef, we found this restaurant to offer fish based dishes. Been on Japan for about 2 weeks and have tried loads of different dishes but this has got to be one of my favorite. Their tuna rice bowl was so good, simple but the quality of the tuna was amazing, so fresh and tender. The room is quite big so you have plenty of space to enjoy your meal with jazz music in the background. Very affordable but especially for the quality of the food. Strongly recommend!

Absolutely delicious, worth the price, expect to spend 3000-5000 yen per person, but the quality is great. The restaurant is very clean and well designed, no greasy smell. Clean toilet. The hida beef is special and tender, what I wish is that they grill it slightly more as there wasn’t enough smoke flavour when I ate the beef.

Came in for a very quick and casual bite with the intention of trying the local Hida beef. I got the "Hida beef tasting steak rice bowl" and it did not disappoint! The meat literally melts in your mouth and the way it was prepared was perfect. The service was great with the staff being polite and cheerful. Definitely recommend stopping by.

We came across this restaurant on our visit to Hida Furukawa. Set in a typical Japanese style dining area with shoes off on the Tatami mats. We hit the jackpot. The food was outstanding, the presentation on the plate was of the highest order and so eye appealing the food exceeded all expectations. The service too was exceptionally quick with the usual Japanese politeness. This is a must visit restaurant whenever you visit this most picturesque town in the Gifu Prefecture. Five Stars all round.

Doesnt look like much from the outside, but this is a delicious true japanese restaurant. Delicious food, very nice service. The establishment is hold by an old couple, very smiling are awesome cooks ! I strongly recommand this restaurant. The prices seems high (because of the high quality meat), but they also have couple meals that are not expensive at all and very good !

Excellent store with wide selection of goods from food, sauce and condiments, sweets, wine, specialty products to souvenirs. Don't miss the craft and activity corner to make your own sarubobo mascot, grill japanese rice cracker or DIY decoratives. Amongst others, bought beautiful hand made Japanese design postcards for JPY40, what a steal!. Highly recommended as 1-stop shop for souvenirs, local crafts and goodies. Very helpful and patient staff. Ample parking; opens early and till 10 pm. Just great to grab souvenirs from Hida Takayama and Gifu areas at tax free prices. Strongly recommended.

We visited on a Friday morning and there were only a few stalls. We bought a bottled apple juice and a box of blueberries. There was also a random grape plant by the side, full of green grapes still on the vine, which was quite fun to see. It is nice to check it out if you are nearby, but probably not worth coming all the way just for this.

Was not as robust as we had hoped. We went in August and it was very hot most days. The morning was cooler, but we wonder if the market is busier other times during the year. Sadly it did not provide as many options as we’d hoped it would. We did think that it was beautiful walking next to the river. Great location.

Bring cash. Go early. Get the local milk the hida bun the beef skewers and before you get there stop to see the lady with the rice balls for 150 yen and the shop selling hida beef cutlets and tofu cubes.

A quiet and peaceful little market, where citizens sell things they’ve grown and made themselves. I couldn’t stop smiling the whole time I was there. it’s such a truly beautiful market.

Had a very nice lunch, lovely people, low price and a (abbreviated) English menu. Most of the customers were - probably - office people, seated on either Western style tables and chairs or Japanese low tables and tatamimats. Very relaxed atmosphere, swift service. Recommended! We payed 1850¥ for two set meals, beef rib and chicken, including pickles (nice) miso soup (really nice) and a big bowl of rice.

Simply the best hotel and onsen I've ever stayed in. The room, service, and food were exceptional. Everything was pristine clean and every object we used was crafted with care. The private baths have a fantastic view to the mountains and rivers. On top of this the staff is really helpful and welcoming and they do speak english. Visited in early 2024 and it was easily one of the best ryokans I've ever been to in Japan. It's great for couples, and the service was amazing. Yamakoshi and all the staff were very welcoming. All rooms included its own private open-air onsen, and we got to watch the snow fall while relaxing in it. It was our first time having an irori dinner too. Ever since then we've been searching for other places in Japan to experience it again but have only found one other ryokan. No children are allowed, which made it even better. Would definitely go back to Japan just to visit again!

Highly recommended! Beautiful Ryokan with just 12 rooms, private and semiprivate Onsen, very attentive staff with superb service, the food is just excellent and probably the best we had on the whole Japan trip! You need to travel a bit to get there from Takayama, it is definitely worth it! Watch out for the classic Futon bed, it is a bit tough for non Japense, still we enjoyed our stay very much :-)

Perfect blend between traditional Japanese style and modern rooms and amenities. Dinner and breakfast are as expected a full on experience. Only downside is the secluded location but at the same time this does not really matter if you are only staying for a night and want to enjoy the hotel. That said the hotel does offer shuttle service to one of the more connected bus stops. Would reccomend it to anyone staying in the area!

Overall great experience. Not the best Ryokan I have done, and a bit out of the way, but definitely in my top 10 hotels. Particularly the shared onsens you can privatise for free were amazing, and the free coffee/drinks bars was great. It was difficult to give an extra star, as I found the room a bit too small for the price, and I had greater expectations for the dinner (you get to cook your own food on a hot plate, but personally I prefer the experience where the food is served to you perfectly cooked and seasoned like I had in other ryokans). I still gave it a 5th star because overall I loved it.

Probably one of the best hotel experiences of my life. The facilities are stunning, the staff is remarkably attentive, and the food is incredible. We can’t wait to return!

Absolutely stunning beef burgers. Super flavoursome, juicy and tasty. It was so good my partner went back for a second burger! There's also a lovely shaded courtyard seating area to enjoy the burgers and drinks. Sadly by the time we arrived (~1 PM) they had already sold out of the beef sushi. I also found the ice cream incredibly creamy and enjoyable. Would highly recommend this place!

Really good and really juicy burgers! It looks like it's run by two people, so although the service can be a little slow, they are welcoming to foreigners and are very friendly people! The burgers were very juicy, and I enjoyed the fries as well. There is some bench seating and outdoor seating around the corner.

We visited around 18:00, about 30 minutes before closing, and unfortunately the popular Matsuki Burger was already sold out. We opted for two Hida beef burgers instead. The food was… not great, not terrible — decent, but didn’t quite justify the price in our opinion. Communication with the cashier (possibly the owner) was a bit difficult. He seemed rushed and slightly nervous, which didn’t contribute to a very welcoming experience. Overall, we left wondering what the hype in the other positive reviews was really about.

It’s not a five star experience because the Hyda Burger and the Shrimp Burger were a bit plain. We were expecting a bit more flavor, especially considering the price it’s not a cheap burger, so our expectations were high.

Yummy Hida burger near train station, be prepared to wait as it’s popular! Fresh lettuce, tomato and onion. Burger was generous and only reason for 4 and not 5 stars was middle was raw but believe that is how Hida beef prepared as Takayama also known for their raw beef. Just a matter of preference.

Must try when in Takayama. Hida Beef Burger is exceptional. Everything is super fresh and crispy. I had 2 burgers it was so delicious. Two ladies behind this establishment were friendly and they prepared the meal pretty quick all though it was only two of us. Outside seating only or standing.

We will always remember our stay at Soy and Tai + his parent’s hospitality! It was the highlight of our Takayama visit. Five stars in all areas: The home was thoughtfully designed and relaxing, with lots of space for reading, sipping tea, or hanging out. Our room was comfortable and included traditional pajamas and tatami mats. The Japanese-style breakfast that Tai and his mother cooked was wonderful! He spent time to explain what each of the dishes were and provided us with extra miso soup and coffee :) and not to mention his impressive latte art! We loved hanging out with Tara, the kitty, who greeted us upon arrival and let us treat her to kitty snacks and scratches. The best part of all was Tai’s kindness toward us and willingness to accommodate us. He made sure that we had directions, reservations to dinner (and gave us a great recommendation to the pizza spot nearby!), and that we were comfortable at all times. It was so kind of him to pick us up from the city center when we were ready to head home. The best host! We are so lucky to have found Soy and loved our experience so, so much! If you’re on the fence, please take this as your sign to book a stay at Soy— you’ll be so glad you did!

We had a wonderful stay at SOY Guesthouse. Welcomed graciously with a drink, the atmosphere was relaxing right from the start. The room was clean, comfortable, and the beds were great. We loved watching movies on the projector in the Kura room. Breakfast was far above expectations—both the Japanese and Western styles were excellent. I stayed with my wife and son, and we all loved it. Hospitality was top notch. We’ll definitely be back!

AMAZING! We stayed at Soy during our visit in Takayama and we fully recommend you to do the same! The guesthouse is really beautiful and super authentic. Tai and his family are the kindest people and their hospitality is 10/10. Nothing you ask them is too much for them and they always help you with the biggest smile. Staying at SOY was a lovely experience! Tai-san was a wonderful host and treated us like honored guests. His mother cooked us beautiful Japanese breakfasts (western breakfasts were also available). Our room was very comfortable and the house was filled with art and beautiful objects. Tai-san picked us up at the train station and drove us to and from the old town. We highly recommend SOY!

The stay at the SOY was incredibly pleasant, peaceful and relaxing. Tai-San and his family are amazingly kind and caring and we had the best stay. The house was truly beautiful and combined modern and traditional japanese style. It was very clean and with small touches like little vases with flowers that made it even more homely. The japanes style breakfast was homecooked and amazingly good. The location is a bit outside of the city, we were prepared to walk but instead Tai-San and his parents were ever so kind to drive us. And to be woken up by birds singing and warching the Koi pond at breakfast was definetely a huge bonus of this location. We wished we would have stayed longer here.

The SOY hotel was the highlight of our japan trip so far. The family is super nice, the rooms and the breakfast are awesoe. The shuttle service is extremely convenient also for getting to places all over Takayama. I was really sad we only booked two nights. Thank you very much, Tai and family!

Five star experience! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect (my partner booked this place) but I was blown away. If you’re looking for a Japanese type tavern stay, you simply must consider this ryokan. The staff are very kind and work like a well oiled machine, and they speak a decent amount of English. They have a private and alternating communal onsen. They serve excellent food for dinner and breakfast, where you can truly see the love and care they put into every course. The place breathes hospitality, and I left feeling very appreciated and pampered!

This place was awesome. We had our private little onsen, but there was also a public one and a private one that anyone could book for one hour. The service was great and the staff was very friendly. Everyone there seems like a big family and it gives off a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Even if you don’t know much about Japanese culture and if you don’t know how to eat their food properly, don’t be scared because the staff will give you directions. You eat dinner and breakfast in your own designated room and you can wear the traditional clothes they bring to your room. We stayed for one night and it was definitely worth it. I would definitely recommend visiting a ryokan when you’re in Japan.

This ryokan is a gem. The view and location is amazing. We got the room with private bath/onsen, which was superb. The entire building is a work of art. The dinner and breakfast was amazing, the hostess helped us cooking our meat to perfection. No words can describe the friendliness, kindness and helpfulness of the hosts, they go above and beyond to make you feel as comfortable as possible.

Simply amazing. Bus stops at the entrance. Fantastic breakfast and dinner courses, enough to feed the hungriest guest. The Hida beef melts in your mouth. The common hot springs look and feel great. The private hot spring of the maisonette is quite roomy, large enough for four. Staff is very helpful and polite, and speak English well. Local sightseeing is easily accessible by bus. You can read manga in the gift shop. There are no nearby convenience stores, so be sure to bring anything you will need.

It's a fantastic craft gallery featuring great lacquerware, metalware, wooden objects. All sublime museum level contemporary crafts, not the usual folkloric souvenir crafts. With prior reservation it's possible to have dinner and tea serving in their private room. Food was delicate, sophisticated but elegantly contained; served with grace. Tea was served with candle lighting only. The whole experi nce was memorable... and I have been living in Japan for 20 years, so I say this solidly.

After perusing the Miyagawa Morning Market on our last day in Takayama, my husband and I meandered quite a bit as we walked along winding, hillside residential streets from Takayama Park. While we thought we found a burger spot for lunch, it was closed that day, so we just strolled to this spot right across the street. They offered a lot of Hida beef dishes on their menu, so it was probably a good thing we skipped the burger. As it turned out, my husband didn't skip it because he ordered the ¥1,580 Hida Beef Hamburg Steak, a big portion of grilled ground beef ladled with a tonkatsu gravy. Serving only ten a day, it was tasty and sizzling hot to boot. I went for the more traditional ¥1,580 Hida Beef Diced Steak Set, which was pure protein and quite tender. It was actually better than the Hida beef sushi I had on a rice cracker a couple of days earlier. Both our dishes came on cast-iron griddle pans along with cabbage, a few fried potatoes, rice, some pickled vegetables, and a cup of beef broth. It was a pretty hearty lunch, quite satisfying. We didn't realize until afterwards that they also served specialties like Hida beef croquettes and menchi katsu. There was a semi-hidden terrace which explained why none of the locals ate close to us. At least that's what I prefer to believe. FOOD - 4 stars...big portions of tender Hida beef AMBIANCE - 4 stars...casual, family-style spot SERVICE - 3.5 stars...attentive enough TOTAL - 4 stars...get your protein fix here

I had the diced beef set which was really reasonably-priced, while my mom had prawns and really that was mediocre. Service is excellent and the guy who served us was not flustered no matter how busy the shop was. Hardly any foreigners (apart from my mom and me) in that resto that late morning. It also sells beef croquette next door where people could sit under a shelter.. While its beef croquette is quite popular, i actually didn't think it was any special. In fact it's a little too sweet for me, suspect they put too much onions in there.

Absolutely top notch barbecue. Every piece of meat was succulent and very tasty and the smell was intoxicating. As well as various barbecue meats I also ordered the simmered beef tendon and also the cold noodles served with kimchi. The goat was very friendly even though we had a bit of a language barrier but I was able to solve that with the google translate app. This is one restaurant I wish I could take home with me. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to come back!

Place is little bit hidden in the back of the parking lot, but it has great atmosphere and very nice service. Food and mainly the meat was very delicious. 100 % recommended. Menu is not in English but you can easily translate with google.

Friendly owner from Hokkaido, felt very welcome there even tho we don’t understand Japanese. The space is small only can fit 8 pax. If u got the seat then u are lucky! We came at 7PM and there has been several people coming and rejected due to limited space. Notes : Prepare to have u clothes smelly.

Very nice and homy yakiniku restaurant with really good vibe. Hidagyu and heart are highly recommended. And please try the cold noodle! The noodle itself is customized and handmade from Sapporo. The cold noodle can fresh your mouth after yakiniku! The restaurant severed only 8 seats only, but definitely worth a try!

Lovely stay here. We were lucky to have a bit of snow in April, which was perfect weather for the Onsen. The food was some of the best we had in Japan. I’d definitely come back here!

Great Location and Unforgettable Onsen Experience. The location is perfect—just a short walk from the Takayama bus terminal. Our room was cozy, spacious, and featured a private onsen with a serene view of the tranquil forest. It was truly one of the best onsen experiences we've ever had. We also booked the dinner option during our stay, and the Hida beef shabu-shabu they served was absolutely outstanding. A truly memorable stay!

Not worth the money. The hotel policies were unkind and the staff was rude. We were kicked out of the hotel lobby (into the rain) after check out and they wouldn't let us sit at the lobby for an hour while we waited for our bus. We were also travelling with an 82 year old woman and they still wouldn't let us sit at the lobby. The facilities themselves were wonderful with private outdoor onsen.

Easily the best and most memorable experience of our entire 2 weeks in Japan. Fantastic location, friendliest staff we’ve come across in Japan, and such a special private onsen experience which we couldn’t find anywhere else. Food was incredible - would very strongly recommend the optional dinner course - our waitress that evening was so kind and friendly and made our experience incredibly special. Without a doubt the best experience of our entire trip.

The hotel did not agree to refund us even though we asked to cancel more than 2 weeks before the reservation. We had to cancel our whole trip because my dad got cancer. Horrible people must run this place, just stole our money (about 300$)

I had an absolutely incredible experience at this ramen shop in Takayama! The flavors were simply out of this world — every bite was rich, perfectly balanced, and deeply satisfying. The broth was packed with depth, the noodles had just the right texture, and the toppings were fresh and delicious. On top of the amazing food, the service was outstanding. The staff were warm, attentive, and made me feel truly welcome from the moment I walked in. You can really tell they care about both the quality of their dishes and the happiness of their guests. This was easily one of the best ramen experiences I’ve ever had, and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Takayama. An unforgettable meal — I can’t wait to come back!

Located in Old Takayama. I had the high grade HIDA beef skewers with Japanese pepper and salt. Delicious!! Just melted in my mouth. The atmosphere was so quaint and the service was very friendly and exceptional.

Affordable and simple ramen restaurant in Takayama. We waited for about 15~20min before we were seated. They have an English menu so you can ask for that if you can't read Japanese. We ordered the regular size ramen with additional pork and egg toppings, and a hida beef skewer. I wish there were a bit more toppings. The ramen noodles were good. The beef skewer has an interesting seasoning to it that reminds me of shampoo. Probably some kind of flower spice.

Absolutely loved our stay here! The staff were incredibly hospitable, welcoming us with warm tea and delicious snacks upon arrival. They took the time to share insightful tips about Takayama’s food scene (like where to find the best Hida beef!) and must-see sights, which made our trip special. The rooms were spacious, clean, and comfortable—the breakfast was delicious as well. Would definitely stay again! Highly recommend for anyone visiting Takayama.

The hospitality was superb. Upon arrival, we were served matcha tea and traditional peanut snacks from Takayama, which were both delicious. All of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. In particular, Haruka provided us with a detailed explanation of the ryokan's facilities, as well as recommendations on attractions in and around Takayama. When we asked if we could buy fruits at Miyagawa morning market, she recommended that we buy apples there, and we successfully managed to purchase sweet apples the next day. Haruka also provided us with an extremely generous selection of Japanese snacks and helped us to select fragrant Japanese incense to light up in our room. The staff were able to communicate in basic English and the posters / printouts in the hotel (e.g. guidance on how to use the onsen & eat the Japanese breakfast) were in multiple languages. The ryokan went above and beyond to help us with our requests. They helped us to book a reservation at our requested restaurant (Kyoya) on the day of our stay, even though we reached out to them prior to our stay. I had initially wanted to ask them to help me forward my luggage to another hotel, but they kindly offered to help me store my luggage for 1.5 days after our checkout instead, which helped me save on luggage forwarding fees. The ryokan is housed in a building that is over 100 years old. Despite this, the rooms were impressively clean and well-maintained, with modern facilities such as air-conditioning and bidet toilets. The futons in the room were also very cozy and the blanket was thick and comfortable. The ryokan has an indoor onsen, which we found very relaxing after a long day outside. The ryokan can also help you light up an irori (traditional Japanese charcoal-fired hearth) although we did not try out this service. We opted for the Japanese breakfast spread (you can choose for it to be served at 7am, 8am and 9am) which was delicious and varied, including dishes such as grilled Hida beef with miso, boiled tofu with ponzu sauce, mountain river fish (ayu sweetfish), miso soup, daikon & sweet potatoes, and even fruits accompanied by a small matcha dessert with whipped cream. Overall, we had a really enjoyable stay here and were touched by the hospitality of the staff.

For anyone staying in Takayama, I hope you will have the chance to stay at this ryokan! From the moment we stepped in we felt welcomed by everyone, the level of politeness, professionalism and care demonstrated by the whole team is unmatched. The ryokan itself is really beautiful, and the rooms were comfortable and spacious. We really enjoyed sleeping on the futons, going to their onsen, trying their Japanese breakfast and the fun japanese snacks provided 🫶To top it all off we were even able to try on traditional yukatas! Thank you for making our Tayakama stay so special, Hakura, and the whole staff (don’t remember everyone’s names sorry!). You were amazing and we hope to see you soon again.

We had an excellent stay at the Irori Yado Hidaya. The staff are excellent and make your stay great by their attention to detail and their friendliness. The hotel is a traditional Ryokan i.e. you sleep on futons, have floor seats etc. and we loved embracing this for 2 nights. The hotel offers free incence, candy, tea, and you can try on Yukata's on and even borrow them to go into town. The only things to note is that there are no showers in the room, and if you wish to shower you have to use the communal onsen (seperated by gender). This does not bother me personally, however you have to go naked into the Onsen, which may put some people off. We loved the experience, and want to thank all the staff again for being excellent.

We stayed for one night and it was a pleasant experience. The Staff is super friendly. They are very helpful and they give good tips about the area. Their english is very good and understandable. The Inn is just lovely. Very traditional and it kept the spirit of an old japanese inn. The rooms have air conditioning and the futon beds are very comfy. Their own Onsen is very cozy and it was very relaxing. Shy people beware: the rooms only have toilets. The Onsen is the only place you can wash yourself. It is tattoo friendly though. This should not stop you to book this fine establishment though, as it has a very nice flair. I strongly recommend to book the japanese breakfast, too. It was very delicious! All in all i fell in love with the Hidaya. I want to go back to Takayama for the Festival and i will definetely come back!

The couple.who run it were so friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. We all had chicken and soba noodles all presented in rustic pottery which was a lovely touch. Highly recommended.
