I come here every first Saturday of the month for Raptor Day. They have 15 raptors and a crow they’ve rescued you can see up close and take pictures of. The gift shop is beautiful and everything is fairly priced. There is an admission fee but if you go enough, I recommend buying a season pass that you can upgrade to allow up to two other guests to bring with you for free and you get discounts in the gift shop as well. Right off of Lake Michigan and plenty of trails and a watchtower. A lot of the trails are handicap accessible as well. 🙂

The space is incredibly well managed both from an ecological standpoint and trail infrastructure. Late July is not a great time to go birding in around here but I still managed to record 14 species on my hike. Huge array of native plants in woodland, meadow and wetland ecosystems, a large number blooming this time of year. The trails in the Solitude Marsh section are a bit overgrown, I was not able to hike through with my kid in our backpack carrier, and there is some buckthorn back there, but this is still an incredible place to hike and get a sense of the biodiversity native to southeast Wisconsin.

And for the most part they were friendly. However I'm taking two stars because I feel like way overpaid and not only did I not get to enjoy it fully. It was not all it was hyped up to be. This is an event that is good for little kids not bigger kids I'd say no older than 8 years old. There's another activity going on down the street. Which has the police directing you at a four-way stop. These officers forcefully made me turn rather than go the way I was going. Only to realize that because of this I walked for over six blocks of a terribly steep Hill only to be at the wrong event. I had a lady call my correct event and let them know that I was coming that it was due to the traffic duty officers that I wound up in the wrong place. Also mind you lack of signs telling people that this is one activity and down there is another. Regardless of this knowledge when we arrived they basically rushed us to get ahead with a group that we were supposed to start with so we missed a few things in the beginning something that was not said when we called. Which made it all the more less worth $80. I know there's nothing I can do about this now. It doesn't hurt anyone else but me also. But this could have so been handled so much better by the people from the park, the officers directing traffic, and the activity planners putting up signs. All of those people and things could have prevented such a terrible experience. Better organization better explanation of services and age requirements or appropriateness. I would not recommend this to people with older children. And I would not recommend due to the inconvenience I had to go through. It's over now so who cares right but... This was definitely not the experience I expected to have for that amount of money. Still all in all I'd like to say it was a beautiful place. With very kind staff otherwise

In my opinion, it is among my three favorite parks in Southeastern Wisconsin. There is such an abundance of wildlife, especially birds. They have double-crested cormorant, green/black-crowned night/great blue herons, wood ducks, common mallards, and an abundance of small birds (warblers and such). There are white-tailed deer, common snapping turtles, american bullfrogs, raccoons, and various insects. The inlaid trails of the forest are amazing and almost majestic. Some of these surrounding trails are a bit overgrown with foliage, so if you want to really hike it bring long clothes and bug spray/vaporub. So many people taking pictures with zero self awareness or just plain ignorant. When I heard about this place and how it was the state's only "urban forest" I was filled with doubt about how much of a "forest" it could be. I had a grand time and found it actually very, very relaxing and then I slept very well that night. I pretty much explored the entire park and kept walking about to see everything. Still as I said I found it very refreshing even though I wasn't sitting as most people do. I loved the hiking trails. Some of the trails go through a wooded area and there is a little bridge you can pass over and there's a stream under it. This area is also along the river and you can see some great views! Its very spectacular if you love nature. Lots of tall towering trees too. The trees looked old and stately. The one bridge that leads from the parkhouse to the nature trail was closed but you can still get onto the trail by going around to the left - very easy! There are also trails that lead down to the river area too so lots of hiking opportunities in this park but the trails are all kind of level and easy. Still I had great fun exploring this area - except if you are going down to the river - that bit is steep. I also recall last autumn coming across a swing hanging from a tree somewhere in the hiking area - it was a very pleasant surprise and totally unexpected! I didn't see it yesterday but I am sure its there somewhere. There is another hiking trail on the other side of the main road that runs through the park and it curves around a large field and ends near the sledding hill & archery course. Yes this park has an archery course! I actually saw people using it too! That's what those huge things in the field are - the targets. Lots of picnic areas, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, kiddie play areas and all sorts of stuff. This is a really huge park! And part of it even extends past the waterfall to the south, on the other side of that old train bridge. There's another big grassy field there. And the waterfall is stunning! Its not too tall but its very wide and has a curving shape. While I was there I actually saw a huge dark colored fish try to jump up the waterfall! That was the last thing I had expected to see. Oh and I also spotted a small neat painted rock along the hiking trail. See if you can see it too when you visit! The parkhouse was closed during my visit. There is a portable bathroom right by it. You know the sort. And there is a fantastic view from the top of the sledding hill too. In fact this was my favorite place in the whole park. There is also a Little Free Library located in this park and its currently packed full of books. Would be a great place to sit and read. I certainly plan on visiting this park more!
